Except we are already doing basically that, just a little further down the nervous system. Google “Argus bionic eye”. It’s far from perfect, but retinal implants are giving a semblance of vision to the blind by stimulating the actual nerves. With how rapidly technology in that field is growing, especially all the research going into nerve and brainwave controlled prosthetics for amputee veterans or weaboos and AI starting to design better AI that can probably figure this stuff out faster than we could otherwise... nothing really surprises me anymore.
