If you do a lot of Ikea, I would recommend getting a metric hex bit set for use with a power drill on the lowest setting to avoid over-tightening. You can also use the bits with a ratcheting screwdriver to make it easier and more ergonomic to drive the screens by hand. I use the drill to drive most of the screws in, and then finish by hand.

Anyone with Security torx bits can easily remove the lock/gps from the back wheel, and turn an un-ridable trash bike, into a free bike for a person in need of transportation.

I'd encourage everyone to get a set and start freeing as many bikes as you can find before the city sanitation services takes them all to the dump. I really doubt Spin is going to come pick them up.

Ifixit. I've been using a couple of their tool sets for the past few years and they're holding up great. I use them a lot. Lifetime warranty if something does mess up.

My favorite set.

I don't know why people keep saying "It's a security torx" I guess they just aren't looking closely... because it's NOT torx, it's a five point.

torx is six pronged, those holes are clearly five.

You need one of these: https://smile.amazon.com/Silverhill-Point-Tamper-Proof-Piece/dp/B002P4YCGM

Be wary of people that don't bother to look closely :)

On top of the good suggestions here, I would recommend a few "life saver" tools

  • Stubby screw driver, I like this wiha one
  • Small 1/4 inch hex ratchet that can fit in really low clearance places and can use any 1/4 inch hex bits. Like this wiha set (not a shill I swear)
  • Telescoping magnetic pickup tool for when you drop that nut down the worst spot
  • A USB endoscope that you can connect to your phone to see in places you normally couldn't

Use a screw extractor and get new screws. Like this, but you should be able to grab one at the local hardware store.

I got it for free from work to replace a worn out Chapman set. This set is much better.

  • Tape: scotch, packing, duct, and masking
  • Scissors: Ones that actually work
  • Utility knife
  • Sponges and dish scrubbers + dish detergent
  • Bottle brush
  • Toilet brush/wand
  • Broom/Roomba
  • Mop/scooba
  • Vaccuum cleaner if you have carpet
  • Do you use kitchen paper towels? A kitchen towel holder is always nice, but not necessary.
  • Tissues for your nose
  • I like having a shoe rack or hanging shoe holder. If you're a guy, stick to the rack b/c your shoes will fit better.
  • Small kitchen fire extinguisher: your apt probably has one, but if it doesn't, get one
  • Bathroom caddy: http://amzn.com/B0014X7ARI
  • Organizers: I like my kitchen to be wicked organized. I use 1 organizer for my pots, 1 for my pot lids, 1 for my dishes, 1 for my mugs, and 1 for my flat pans/cutting boards.
  • Coffee maker
  • Kettle
  • Electric drill - DIY stuff is so much easier with an electric drill. Also, this accessory: http://amzn.com/B00355GLBY - a must for DIY furniture.
  • Lightbulbs
  • Turn on your electricity and other utils 1 day before you move if you can, or you'll be moving the dark
  • Have you researched your cable/internet options?
  • 1 nice flashlight
  • Ice melt
  • A few stamps + envelopes
  • Quarters in the "quarter jar" if you have to use coin-op laundry
  • At least one extension cord
  • At least one multi-plug outlet. I like the squid style ones.
  • Laundry baskets. I prefer to have two - it buys you a little time.
  • 1 magic marker
  • 1 message board with mail caddy - a nice to have
  • Fridge magnets. I use 1 strand of the curiously strong ones, and that's all I need. Those suckers really stick.
  • Moveall or furniture sliders - a godsend if you live alone. You put them under the "feet" of your furniture and you can push your furniture around with ease.

That's what I can think of now. You can get a LOT of this stuff on craigslist for low cost.

T-handle hex bit holders sound like they'd solve your issue.

u/warfieldm · 3 pointsr/DIY

For this particular towel bar, I'd hold it in place to mark the holes, drill pilot holes for the screws, use a driver for the topmost and bottommost screws, and use a manual screw driver for the inner screws. With properly sized pilot holes, installing a screw manually is not very difficult for screws of that size. You can also drive the screws into the pilot holes and remove before hanging the towel bar but that's not as strong of a result. That's assuming you're going into a stud.

Other things I'd consider...

Extra long bit extension as mentioned earlier.

Flexible bit extension. Keep the driver speed slow with these.

u/torrentfox · 3 pointsr/motorcycles

Another tool that can really help is a T-handle hex bit holder. In my experience, this is the best driver to work on carbs. For screws that are are already mangled, or when I expect that they'll be seized (front brake master cylinder cap x1000) and I need more assurance, I use the $8 Harbor Freight impact screwdriver.

u/PinkyThePig · 3 pointsr/HomeImprovement

Just to be sure, what do you mean by died? There are two troubleshooting steps you can take on most disposals.

  1. If it is humming but not turning, it is jammed. There will be a 1/4" hex insert in the bottom of it. You can buy something like this, throw it in your impact driver/drill and turn it both ways manually.

  2. If it makes no noise at all, look for a (typically) red button on the bottom of it and push it back in. It is basically a circuit breaker for the disposal so that it doesn't overheat itself. If this tripped, you may need to do step 1 as well as it probably tripped due to being jammed.
u/Skulldingo · 3 pointsr/buildapcsales

Buy the kit that has the bits you need, the only reason the S2 is desirable is that the bits are made from a harder material, so better for someone who uses them on a regular basis. I personally bought a security bit set, for the triwings. The bits just aren't as durable, but more than adequate for casual use.

https://www.amazon.com/SCREWDRIVER-SECURITY-SPECIALTY-Ratchet-TRI-WING/dp/B005YCX8HG/

This S2 security bit set is what I would go for if I was doing this kind of thing for a living.

....... or get an easy out and a drill. I have these, never failed me yet, and takes all of 10 seconds

u/Jathm · 2 pointsr/BuyItForLife

I recommend http://www.amazon.com/Felo-0715732350-4-Inch-T-handle-Holder/dp/B000E62NIC

it is not ratcheting, but a good t handle is worth its weight in gold. I can put far greater pressure on stubborn bits with this. It might not be a replacement for you, but its a great addition.

u/kickasskentuckian · 2 pointsr/PS4

There's no substitute for the right tool. I recommend you stop before you strip the screws. I bought this set for under $6. Showed up in two days and I had the screws out in two minutes.

EDIT: As a bonus, you'll also be able to take apart bathroom stalls if you're so inclined...

You'll never worry about a stripped screw again. Trust me.

u/GraZZmaZter · 2 pointsr/Tools

I have the 26pc set. The magnetic holder works well, however it does make it harder to see the depth when going into wood. The double ends work, but the included pair are a hair short of being more useful. I think they do make long ones.

At the end of the day, I feel a lot of people forget that bits are supposed to be expendable. Even if you make sure to use the right size bits, these 18v impacts and drills shred em eventually.

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0042CF03Y?psc=1

u/kallrobin · 2 pointsr/StonerEngineering

Perhaps something like this and then a diamond tip on that then. I suggest you fill the outer chamber with sand for stability.

u/appletart · 2 pointsr/bicycletouring

The idea of using them to deter thieves is completely ridiculous. In fact, any funny-shaped bolt-head is easily removed, and quite cheaply too.

u/d65vid · 2 pointsr/DIY

I'm not sure exactly what is happening in this photo, but it looks like maybe a screw that the head has broken off of and is now stuck inside whatever it was screwed into?

If that is the case, they make tools (like this) that are designed for pulling out broken, stripped, or otherwise damaged screws. I've used them before and they can be a hassle, but they work ok. I can't really tell by the photo what size that is, but it is much easier if the screw has a larger diameter.

u/Enduro_Jeff · 2 pointsr/Dualsport

For tools I really like the Tusk T handle tool Then I have a couple pouches one with the sockets, and the other I fill with a Philips bit, a flat bit, and a metric hex key bit set like this. I still have to carry the 10/12 wrench for chain adjusting, the sparkplug puller, and the 27 size spanner for the rear. But compacting all the Hex tools and screw driver tools into a pouch is super handy. Plus with the tool kit wrenches there are so many bolts that just strip if you try to use it, the sockets are so much better and faster. Make sure to have a spare master link. Also maybe a small length of wire, and defiantly a couple spare fuses, I think the fuse box carries a spare in it, but should check. Depending on the miles and conditions, I carry a smaller chain lube. I also run Tubliss, if you get a flat you can generally still ride out of the woods on it, and it is easy to patch puncture holes. Also no chance of pinch flats.

u/siamonsez · 2 pointsr/HomeImprovement

It's a security torx head, get some bits like this.

I'd assume the pressure switch is not adjustable, there's no reason for it to be. You might be able to replace it, but I'd think it'd be hard to find a compatible one without some jerry-rigging.

When you say you want to run them in tandem, do you mean you want to connect them to each other to have a single 39 gal. capacity that both motors fill at roughly the same time? This might be achieved by playing with the line pressure so they cut-in at the same time, though you have to re-adjust them whenever you need to change the overall line pressure.

u/Febtober2k · 2 pointsr/HomeImprovement

I have this but honestly there's so many options in there and I don't even know what the difference is between them all, so I've just been using the basic Phillips head driver that came with the cordless screwdriver (it just came with one Phillips head and one flathead).

Not an easy task to try and do. I think the only thing that will work well is to shadow the bit holder it's self. Bits will still stay organized within a holder, but have a place in the box. It all depends on the number of bits you are dealing with. Here are some products that might help.

this is a handle I like and use, https://www.amazon.com/Felo-0715732350-4-Inch-T-handle-Holder/dp/B000E62NIC

good value! German tool. It is basically a 1/4" bit handle. I like having different handles for the differing bits I use. It makes things faster/ easier than sitting there juggling bits. Once you have the bit size and specification figured out, you do different things from there, maybe get an extra one or two or whatever. Anyway it is a great thing, as you can imagine, to turn a loose disco into a happy scooter. does not work every time. I report the ones that are missing 3 out of the 4 base screws. but I tell you, Often I have tightened up about 70% of them. It's a real issue.

I've had this happen twice and here's a video on how to fix it.

Basically what happens is the system gets hot and the solder that holds the CPU and GPU to the motherboard starts to melt.

You need a heat gun, some thermal paste, a torx security screw driver set (see /u/Kryptik's comment about this here) , and a regular screw driver set to fix it.

You dismantle the system down to the motherboard, and use the heat gun to melt the chips back onto the motherboard.

I did this once successfully and the system worked for about two months before it had the YLOD again. I tried a second time and it didn't work, although I think it was because I didn't let the solder cool back down before putting the console back together.

Edit: /u/Kryptik had a great suggestion on how to bypass the security screw on the system. You can see it here.

OMG a cordless drill + set of metric hex bits make Ikea a breeze.

You can also buy proper hex drivers instead of using allen keys. Insert into your favorite driver/drill/handle of choice.

I don't get why people are content to settle for using the 3 inch long piece of hand-shredding Allen key that comes in the box to screw in something like 34 6 inch screws. Considering just about everything that is furniture in a box will end up using metric hex screws investing in one of these is worth every one of the $7 or so dollars it costs.

I mean come on people, even if you own an apartment keeping a couple basic tools around is a life necessity.

My grandma always buys crap from As Seen On TV that always make me roll my eyes. Until one time she gifted me something like this.

It is so freaking useful. Many clients marvel at how useful it is (I get sent to do a lot of rack n stacks). Just hold the drill wherever it fits and line up the bit and off you go.

^^drill ^^not ^^included

u/limitless__ · 1 pointr/HomeImprovement

Your issue is that you need to buy a set of phillips head bits. If you're only using the two that came with the screwdriver then for most of your screws the philips bit will either be too small or too big. You need to choose the right sized bit for the screw you're using. If you do that they should not strip.

Something like this will solve your problems: https://www.amazon.com/DEWALT-DW2166-45-Piece-Screwdriving-Tough/dp/B002JWSNIS/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&qid=1487958667&sr=8-4&keywords=bit+set

You are so right! Thank you so much!

-
Though I've seen, worked with, and even have some bigger torx drivers in my drill driver set, it never occurred to me what those particular screw heads were called, nor did it occur to me that it is what's in my mod.

Also, if anyone else is ever in need of a cheaply priced torx screwdriver set, I found this one on Amazon for $8.99, which has 24 batch head sizes :)

So the top item is the CD/DVD. The thing with the orange button doesn’t pop out if you push that orange button does it?

The confusing thing is when I look at the side view it looks like one hard drive (maybe SSD) connected and one immediately above not connected (maybe HDD). But then I don’t know what the other thing with orange button is.

Anyway, that screw is a Torx security screw. I don’t think you should have to open that piece though. I would remove all the screws from the side of that drive cage and see if it slides out. But if that doesn’t work then you’re looking at a Torx security set https://www.amazon.com/Torx-Driver-Security-T-10-T-40/dp/B0002SPLQ8
