It really depends on the extent of the disability.

Something like this might work if you have an arm and partial hand.

https://www.amazon.com/Power-Weight-Lifting-Hooks-Weightlifting/dp/B00DVM34NO

The equipment for extensive disabilities gets on the expensive side, unfortunately. You would need to work with someone to find a best-fit solution.

I hope this doesn't break rule 5, I am doing my best not to give any advice that would be controversial in any way.

I am not a doctor, or therapist.

My currently refined exercise routine is as follows, with days being flexible:

Monday:
Chest: Incline and decline freeweight press or flat bench press, then freeweight flies.
Biceps: Isolated hammer curl (lie at slightly more than a 45 degree angle on bench, arms hanging straight down and curl to at least 90 degrees while keeping shoulders relaxed), then isolated other curl (forget the name).
Cardio / fat burn: 50 minutes on elliptical at max resistance and 20 degree incline. Approximately 5 miles of distance.

Wednesday:
Back: Reverse flies with freeweights and that one lift where it looks like you're starting an invisible lawnmower. Unfortunately I can't do pulldown lifts because I don't have the machine, and I'm too heavy to do pullups on a doorframe.
Triceps: Triceps extension. Tough to describe, but basically I grab a freeweight, place a hand and knee on the bench, and tuck my other arm's elbow into my side. With freeweight in hand, I extend the hand to be parallel down with the floor, and back again. Then I do the overhead triceps extension.
Cardio / fat burn: Same as Monday

Friday:
PARTYING PARTYING YEAH! J/k
Friday used to be my leg day. I no longer work out my legs because my leg muscles are huge already. So much so that if I wear jeans that fit properly in the waist, they are invariably skin tight around my thighs. I think this is because they used to support a 400lb body 24/7. Instead, I just go for stamina by doing the cardio / fat burn exercise for another 50 minutes on Fridays.

Alternate Monday Wednesday:
Shoulders: Sometimes I do this on Mondays, sometimes on Wednesdays. Military press, then that lift I forget the name of where you stand with your arms at your sides and lift your hands up to shoulder height without bending your elbows.

I do not do the shoulder shrug exercise because although it is effective, I feel it strengthens my neck more than my shoulders, and I do not want muscle neck.

All in all I'd say my Monday / Wednesday routine takes about 1.5 hours. I have my own workout equipment at home (Nautilus selecttech 1090 adjustable weights, weightbench, and that elliptical they sell at Costco) so I save time not having to travel to a gym. It's also awesome to not worry about using equipment when others are using it, or feel like someone's eyes are on you when you work out. Plus, I have a big ol' TV in my workout room which I can use to stream any TV show I want from the internet or my file server which can be a nice distraction :)

Feel free to inquire about any of these exercises in further detail.

Our door frames are weird too, due to decorative trim and other old house oddities. Instead of an over the door frame I opted for one that mounts into the frame itself. If screwing into the frame isn’t an issue, check out this (this is what I have):

Do back excercises, bicep excersices (expecially reverse grip curls), and maybe buy some fat gripz if you want to go the extra mile. Also, this will murder your forearms https://www.amazon.com/Wrist-Forearm-Blaster-by-GoFit/dp/B0007W2FJA/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1524865629&sr=8-3&keywords=forearm+workout

Power Rack, oly bar, weights, bench. All you need right there.

Basically the same power rack my gym has.

Decent bench

Quality bar and enough weight to keep you busy for a couple months.

You can probably find some of this on CL for dirt cheap though. Especially the bar and weights since they are a PIA to move.

u/Joshua_Naterman · 7 pointsr/bodyweightfitness

I tend to agree with /u/andersonah, based on relative safety concerns with each.

I'll tell you right now, you need to be very particular about your approach to the rings.

  1. Start with nothing but support holds, and don't worry about the shaking: after 2 weeks that will be gone, it is just a motor learning thing.

  2. Continue your dips on your current set up.

  3. As you get used to the rings, start doing negatives with 1-2 second holds all the way down to parallel (upper arms parallel to the ground).

Slowly transition into one set of ring dips with perfect form and stability, and don't add more than 1 set per week. It is ok to go slower.

I am recommending that you consider weighted dips with option 4 or 5 first, though.

  4. STRONGLY consider making a PVC dip station. Use 1.5" schedule 40 PVC... it will cost ~45 bucks, same as the rings.

    https://www.reddit.com/r/bodyweightfitness/comments/27clxl/just_finished_a_diy_dip_station_and_am_satisfied/
  5. You could buy this for 70 bucks and free shipping. If you don't have prime you can venmo me the money and I'll order it and ship it with my prime.
u/CritterM72800 · 6 pointsr/Fitness

Sure. If it helps, here are the exact ones I bought:

  • Bench
  • Barbell set
  • Squat rack
  • Weight tree

All are about the cheapest I was able to find. If you have some extra money, I'd definitely suggest a better barbell, or a power rack or at least a 1 piece squat rack instead of the 2 piece that I got. But that works fine for me.
u/mirinfashion · 6 pointsr/homegym

For the price of the material, you're better off just getting the CAP weight tree; it goes on sale every now and then for around $25. If you really wanted it to be mobile, just buy the dolly from HF and mount it on that, but if you have all the materials already, then you'd come out ahead.

u/Redstonefreedom · 5 pointsr/rstats

Yea, I feel you. I mean, I don't have tendonitis from typing, but I've had it from climbing and it really sucks, no two ways about it nor around it.

1) Mid-term solution: Vim-adaptation

I would, in that case, highly recommend switching to Vim. (not emacs, because that tendonitis will be back from all the C-x C-c C-? nonsense) Everything is basically a small movement of your finger away, and you don't use the mouse at all. These days, that really is the point of vim, is avoiding the restriction of having to use mouse to accomplish everything in a GUI which doesn't have any button-alternatives for UI.

2) Short-term solution: R-keycuts

A vim setup, its configuration and "getting-used-to", takes time, and is understandably a lot to take on. So, in the short-term, as you mentioned -- R keycuts.

The Keycuts can be viewed & modified by CMD+?, then type "Modify.." and it comes up in mac search. In Windows I'm sure there's something similar. They are ultimately stored as a JSON file in the ~/.R/ directory, and so are very portable. Config. your stuff like crazy without worry that you'll have to do it all over again in the event of switching systems. My dotfiles-repo automates this when I switch between macs, using git. But if you primarily work in RStudio, and only have to manage one dotfile, copying it over is trivial.

For example, I have ^P to "Switch Focus between Source/Console", i.e. in RStudio, from editor to console. You can search the key commands more-or-less semantically, if you think about a keyword of something you want to do. Learning keycuts ad-hoc, as ideas arise, is the better way imo.

3) Long-term solution: Fix your tendonitis

Biologically speaking, tendonitis is caused by an inflammation of the tendons. That much is common knowledge. However, causally-speaking, tendonitis is caused NOT by over-use of a muscle, but rather, under-use of its antagonist. Not a lot of people understand this, even PT's, but there is really no such thing as over-use of a muscle, at least practically speaking. They're built to be inflamed such that they encourage the adaptive response. But that adaptive response necessitates fluid exchange with the blood-to-tissue-to-lymph, as the cellular debris of unaligned/unattached or straight-out dead cells must be cleared by Macrophages, which arrive by the blood, and taken into the lymph.

Lymph, however, has no brute-force pump (the heart) like the blood has, to ensure its circulation. Instead, our body's functioning relies upon: (1) valves to trap backflow, and (2) incidental muscle contraction/relaxation, to promote adequate circulation of the lymph, circulating eventually back into the blood after having gone through the filtering/clearance systems in the human body.

Why does any of this matter? Well if your inflamed muscle has a weak buddy of an antagonist, it's going to constantly be winning tug-of-war. Keep in mind that muscles are basically stiff-ish water-bags, that can pull themselves tight. Have you ever pinched a hose? How well does it circulate water? Not well at all. In fact, its build-up will reach an asymptote, and water will just stop flowing even if the faucet is open.

So, to get down to brass tacks, how can you promote the necessary circulation to ensure your inflamed muscles get the debris clearance, and resource allocation they need?

Exercise your antagonist. For wrist-borne tendonitis, it is the set of wrist/hand-extensors, found on the hairy-side of your forearm.

Here is some equipment that makes this comprehendible & convenient:

I don't know about the UK but I got these from craigslist for real cheap:

https://www.amazon.ca/Bowflex-SelectTech-1090-Adjustable-Dumbbell/dp/B000OC5RXE

Think it was around $100 used so maybe check craigslist. At home I just have those, a bench, pull up bar. I usually work out at the gym but you can do quite a bit with DBs, I do find them a bit awkwardly sized is the only downside.

edit:
(turns out I paid $200 cdn, found my email)

The problem becomes getting creative enough to work 1.25lb per side in when many gyms only go down to 2.5lb plates. Perhaps ankle weights or something?

Might actually be a decent idea to buy a couple 1.25lb plates to bring with you. $8 for a pair on Amazon isn't too bad. Shame Sportchalet and Sports Authority don't seem to have them listed online.

The three most popular and affordable plate loaded and adjustable single pulley systems are these:

Titan - https://www.titan.fitness/wall-mounted-pulley-tower.html

Valor - https://www.amazon.com/Valor-Fitness-BD-62-Mount-Station/dp/B01LOX2PPO

Archon - https://fitarchon.com/product/adjustable-duel-pulley-station/

Plate loaded is definitely the way to go unless money is no concern. I own the Valor and would recommend it, though if I were buying again I would get the Archon since its the only one of the 3 that has wall mounts on the bottom of the tower in addition to the top.

If you want to go extremely minimialist you could do something like this - https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01LZ244XO/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Harbinger 360890 4-Inch Nylon Weightlifting Belt https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00074H7WI/

u/barbellicious · 4 pointsr/xxfitness

What will you be using it for?

I've read that tapered belts are better / more comfortable for olympic lifting, but I don't have any experience with that.

If you plan to ever compete in powerlifting, you'll need a belt that meets specs.

If you want a belt just for general lifting, a velcro belt is probably fine. I used to have one like this before I started powerlifting:
https://www.amazon.com/Harbinger-360890-4-Inch-Weightlifting-Medium/dp/B00074H7WI/

Once I started powerlifting, I tried a pronged leather belt and found it annoying to put on / take off. I got an SBD belt which I love, but it's definitely $$$$. I like that it's adjustable on the fly and has a lever for quick on / off.

SBD belt: https://www.sbd-usa.com/product-p/sbd-belt.htm

If you have a short torso, lots of people rave about the 3" belt from Best Belts. Most other belts for powerlifting are 4".

PLUG FOR /R/GRIPTRAINING. this sub and r/bwf have changed my life pretty significantly. I spent some time there, started getting into grip work and climbing, and now my grip sessions are some of the favorite parts of my week.

also, if you just want to add stuff to the RR, then try hanging a towel from your pullup bar and grab one end in each hand. do that for your pullups and rows. This will be good for finger and thumb strength (and some size, obviously).

The best thing you can do for size is lots of wrist work, specifically. These are the larger muscles in your forearm. As others have said, start working on your falsegrip hang to hit your wrist flexors. There isn't really a good way to focus on your wrist extensors without equipment. So I would suck it up and buy some equipment.

Best things you can buy is a 6lb or 8lb sledgehammer and do sledge levering. Only cost me about $15 and it is one of my favorite pieces of equipment. If you have dumbbells lying around, do wrist curls and reverse wrist curls (you can google this but it's pretty obvious). If not, buy a wrist roller or make one yourself -- you don't even need proper weights for this, you can just put a few heavy things in a bag and tie it to the roller.

Again, wrist work is the most important thing for size so focus on that. Hope this helps.

u/El_Dudereno · 4 pointsr/cincinnati

If you've got the room, the best thing I ever did was ditch my LA membership and purchase a power rack, bench and 300lb Olympic weight set.

I've added a couple accessory items, but that was enough to get going on a power lifting routine and hit the big compound lifts (squat, dead, bench, overhead) for ~$700 or about 2 years of gym memberships as I saw it.

u/senorworldwide · 4 pointsr/Fitness

Bro there are lots of solutions available to you. The simplest would be a pair of some hooks. Some people use them because their grip isn't strong enough to hold the bar on deadlifts, but they would work to hold the bar for squats, rack pulls, damn near anything I can think of really.

https://www.amazon.com/Power-Weight-Lifting-Hooks-Weightlifting/dp/B00DVM34NO

u/phrakture · 4 pointsr/Fitness

Lifting straps might be for you - they wrap around the wrist and it to support some of the weight. They're easy enough to use on DBs.

They also make these hook things which would probably be useful too.

I'm surprised that no one has suggested a good adjustable bench. With a 200$ gift card you could come away with a pretty good adjustable bench for that price, or come away with a top of the line bench for about 100$. Like these two :

I have the Valor Fitness BD-62 Wall Mount Cable Station
https://www.amazon.com/Valor-Fitness-BD-62-Mount-Station/dp/B01LOX2PPO

I like it a lot. It is about a 2 foot square footprint so it doesn't take up much space at all. It comes with 2 individual handles, but I ordered a rope, a curl bar, and a wide lat bar as well. The only 2 issues I had with it was

  1. When repositioning the height of the cable, you can't use the highest settings or the pulleys bump into each other. This hasn't been an issue for me. 2) I had to bolt the base to the floor with a small angle bracket from Lowes. The top bolts to the wall, but the bottom doesn't and when doing exercises like curls that lift up on the cable, the base wanted to slide around.
u/KalFromCal · 3 pointsr/weightlifting

I personally use a Harbringer 243 4-inch belt I bought it off amazon for around $15. [Link] (http://www.amazon.com/Harbinger-4-Inch-Nylon-3-Inch-Medium/dp/B00074H7WI/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1396208198&sr=8-1&keywords=harbinger+velcro+belt)

Ilya Ilyin used this belt in the 2012 Olympics.

Another good belt is the eleiko weightlifting belt that is around $50 but it's seems that it is always sold out.

u/OiledPelicanEgg · 3 pointsr/nSuns

Depends on your budget. I recently made my first belt purchase and went with this harbinger belt. I went cheap just to see how a belt feels before dropping serious cash down. Now that I've use this belt for a month now I don't see needing to upgrade anytime soon, feels great on heavy deadlifts and squats. A lot of the more experience lifters recommend Inzer Belts if you don't mind spending the cash.

u/asiangoliath · 3 pointsr/xxfitness

I spent under $20 on a nylon velcro belt: here, and have been using it pretty regularly for about a year and a half. It works just fine for my purpose. I lift and do crossfit recreationally and plan on starting to do some olympic weightlifting competitions soon. I have no plans to switch to a nicer belt until I need to, and there's been no noticeable wear or tear on the belt using it 1-2x a week.

What I looked for: I mainly wanted a belt to help provide feedback for the valsalva maneuver. I strap it on tight and I push against it and it works just fine. It doesn't provide that much support for my back but I found that my core being tighter helps a lot with that.

u/Sigseg · 3 pointsr/xxfitness

> I'm worried that I'm going to injure myself if I don't figure out what I'm doing wrong.

You're going to injure yourself if you continue doing something that hurts. Your arm is saying "This is your first warning. Cut it the fuck out". You're not necessarily doing anything wrong. Maybe reverse curls are no longer your cup of tea. You can get an equal arm workout with hammer curls and a wrist roller.

> Should I get it checked out, or wait and see if it stops?

Wait 2 weeks to see if the pain lessens or disappears. A doctor is going to insist on needlessly x-raying your arm. Then they'll order an MRI. A load of hassle and "hmmm huhs" later and they'll shrug their shoulders and say "rest it". Maybe you'll get a cortisone shot and some 800mg Motrin.

Rest it for the time being. I suggest using a Preacher bench in the future if you suspect your form is off. I really suggest you drop the reverse curls if they constantly cause pain.

Officially worked out for the first time in 6 months! Just brought my Titan adjustable dumbbells over to my apartment (my gym is still at my mom's place), and did some more bodybuilding type stuff for upper body, time to grow these noodle arms. Ironically in my office in my apartment, if I get rid of my Laz-Y-Boy, I have plenty of room for a bench and dumbell setup.

Anyone have a strong opinion on a good set of quick-adjust dumbbells? The titans are good for heavier stuff like floor press cuz they can go up to 100lbs a hand, and I only bench like 225, so I won't need more weight on floor press or db press for a long time. But it would be nice to have a pair that is easier to do circuit style workouts in the morning just to get a pump/sweat. Then I'll save heavy shit for my gym at my moms.

Was thinking these two look good:

Bowflex set

About 500lbs of random plates I got cheap. Most of it was bought used but in good condition. Took me a while because I was really patient so I’d find what I wanted.

I’m pretty happy with all of it. I was most concerned with saving space and getting stuff that had high enough weight capacities. I’m not lifting really heavy weights, so it’s all good for me but might not work for everyone.

I’m considering getting a stand or some matts, or maybe a few kettlebells.

u/ccampbellsos · 3 pointsr/ketogains

My initial set up when I didn't want to spend a huge amount, but wanted the capability to do any major lift was as follows:

Bench and Rack

Barbell and weights

Plate Rack

Mats

Plate compatible dumbbells

I highly recommend buying a few extra plates if you plan to go heavier, I picked up 2 more 45's, 2 25's, 2 10's on top of what that set comes with. I was happy with it until I upgraded the rack and bench as my gym grew.

u/heidevolk · 3 pointsr/Fitness

yes

But you will need multiple sets of 5/10lb weights as all the other plates will be too big and award to move around.

u/TheMadPeterson · 3 pointsr/homegym

If you want to save money, go the Craigslist route.

For new stuff?

The best "cheap" barbell is the CAP Barbell's OB-86B. Anything cheaper and you run the risk of getting a shitty, rusted out bar that will fall apart as soon as you put more than 100lbs on it.

As for weights? The cheapest are CAP's 300 lb Olympic weight sets. They weights are crappy, and you may have to file down the holes so it doesn't scrape you bar, but it's the cheapest you'll find brand new. Take the shitty bar that comes with it and sell it on Craigslist for like $50 (if it doesn't arrive already broken).

I've heard mixed things about the Titan rack, but it's probably the best of the budget racks. Supposedly, the quality is improving.

u/flanny0210 · 3 pointsr/homegym

NO!

  1. Don’t buy standard weights, you’re limiting your gains.

  2. That setup will make you top-heavy (bench only and is more geared towards upper-body)

What’s your budget? You should mainly be looking at a bar/plate weight set, power rack, and bench. Those are the essentials to get you started

I wanted a ridiculously solid pull-up bar for my apartment, so I actually bit the bullet and bought the Ultimate Body Press Wall Mounted Pull Up Bar. It requires you to drill four holes into your wall (specifically into studs, so you'd need a stud finder), but it is amazingly sturdy and I really have enjoyed it. I'll just patch up the wall when I move out.

It's very useful, though; you can use it for dips, bodyweight rows, L-sit training, etc. The paralette bars linked by batman1285 are probably a good substitute, though they won't give you as much clearance from the ground.
u/ancientmatingcalls · 3 pointsr/bodyweightfitness

The power tower and those rings are exactly what I use and it's perfect! You may also want to get a bench if you're going to be doing rows on the rings because there's a bar in the middle that makes it difficult and slightly dangerous. I bought this bench and it works just fine. You may want a foot and a half or so of clearance. My ceiling isn't particularly high(about 8' or so?) and I clear the bar just fine on pullups.

u/iscream22 · 3 pointsr/bjj

It really depends on how much money you're willing to invest. I personally have a standard bench

along with a few lighter dumbbells and heavier dumbbells. Also have a 30 pound and 50 pound kettlebell and a yoga mat that i do yoga and situps/crunches on. Something else thats helped me is a good DVD workout program (P90X, UFC Fit etc) maybe find one thats right for you. Many of them offer terrific workouts with minimal equipment/space issues.

My doorframes aren't conducive to the hang over pull up bars either. This one comes with two mounts you screw into the wall and then extend the bar into the mounts. Holds up to 300lbs. I've never had an issue with it. Works wonders. Its 4 tiny holes each side. 50c worth of wood putty to cover up. They have different length bars for different length doorways. Check it out.

Neither.

  1. You don't need a leg extension

  2. Both benches are weak pieces of shits. They will probably break if you bench anything over 135

  3. Save up a little bit more and get this:

Have you tried one of these? I've had elbow tendinitis twice on both elbows -- pretty bad -- and the exercises with "reverse tension" fixed it both times.. Takes several weeks and several exercises per day, but they work.

I've had this one for a bit and it's solid. Only complaint are the safety bars are kind of a pain to move up and down because you have to align the pins, I wish they would have just stuck with the basic through rod.

It's nice to have one with a cable attachment because I don't have dumbbells so it gives you more options to your workout.

I had a cheap 2 post rack before this and it was sketchy, would not recommend a 2 post rack for anything.

u/SushiJuice · 3 pointsr/GYM

This'll probably depend on how much you want to spend. A decent set of weights and rack, brand new, could run around $1500-$2000. But if he's a huge gym rat, he'll probably want OLYMPIC weights (as opposed to standard). He'll probably want a RACK so he can do bench press and squats safely. I personally bought this one and love it. A couple ways to reduce the price is look on Craigslist and any used sporting goods stores in your area. Hope that helps

If it's not too expensive you can always buy a solid Velcro belt from Amazon. I've seen some guys squat 200+ kilos in them and they hold up well. It's a solid investment if you are getting into weightlifting.

The nylon and velcro Harbinger belts have the benefit of not being super thick or overly supportive, light weight, and they have a very simple overlap buckle + velcro closure. You can also pick one up at Walmart, Target, Amazon, etc... and they are very inexpensive (plus I've seen them used by a lot of really strong folks).

Many of the ones sold online are the 5-inch which is 7mm over IWF regulations. Go for the 4-inch model like this one

u/freakazeud · 2 pointsr/crossfit

I have this Harbinger one and love it. It stays nice and tight for pure lifting but isn't obtrusive for WODing. The buckle is small enough to not be annoying and press somewhere but strong enough to hold it nice and tight. The velcro is solid and comes in very handy when you just want to rip of the belt and put it back on fast during some WODs like deadlifts/running or something like that. Would highly recommend especially for the price. It's similar to the valeo one but doesn't have a plastic buckle which I've heard is the point of failure on that one and I like that the Harbinger one is uniform width all around and not going wider towards the back. Just fits better for me and again less obtrusive.

u/delecti · 2 pointsr/Fitness

I got this (well really this but you live in the UK and it's the same product). It's about the same price, and less work for the lazy. Though the cable is a bit long, and unfortunately can't be adjusted.

I have 2 sets of adjustable weight dumbbells:

This is my favorite set, the weight can be adjusted in 5lb increments (with the ends balanced), but you can also adjust in 2.5lb increments if you can live with one end heavier than the other. Weight is really easy to adjust, and they are smooth as butter to change and lift out of the rack.
http://www.amazon.com/Bowflex-SelectTech-1090-Adjustable-Dumbbell/dp/B000OC5RXE/ref=sr_1_19?s=exercise-and-fitness&ie=UTF8&qid=1462995092&sr=1-19&keywords=adjustable+dumbbells

I also have this set. Not nearly as well made, but functional.
http://www.amazon.com/Universal-Selectorized-445-Dumbbells-Stand/dp/B003UO1DLS/ref=sr_1_22?s=exercise-and-fitness&ie=UTF8&qid=1462995092&sr=1-22&keywords=adjustable+dumbbells

For my modest lifting requirements, they both work really well, though I like the way the bowflex units work better (they have a 5-50lb model of these as well).

If you have any questions, feel free to PM me - I've been using these two sets for a number of years now and am generally quite pleased.

There are a few bodyweight-based programs, all of them are fairly similar, but they take a different slant on things.

You Are Your Own Gym is built around military-style calisthenics. There are variations of all the different movements that are based around making them easier so you can do fifty of them and experience that brand of misery, or to make them more difficult and strength-focused. YAYOG has a very nice set of apps that go with it as well.

Convict Conditioning is another bodyweight program based around six different movements (handstand, pull-up, push-up, leg-raises, back-bridges, pistol squats). The progressions are pretty nice, but the way it's presented is like it was written for fifteen year-olds. 2edgy4u, and such.

Overcoming Gravity is a gymnastics-based program, but is also a huge firehose of information about fitness in general. It's a great resource for designing your own program, but if you're a beginner, I don't think the sheer volume of information would be helpful.

All of these would require a pull-up bar. There's the classic Iron Gym, or this thing if the Iron Gym ends up being too low, and if you can screw something into a wall somewhere, I suggest this one.

u/GrandBuba · 2 pointsr/tall

Get a model which allows you to go 'above' the door frame, such as this one.

It'll allow you to at least release some tension of the hams.

Also: get a suspension system (knock-off TRX) and add some bodyweight stuff to it. Pull-ups are nice, but they're only one exercise (of which you won't be able to do many and grow bored). You can take that TRX with you anywhere.

P.S. put a couch cushion in the doorway when doing pull-ups with bent knees. Please. Kneecaps are important.

Running nSuns while on a slight caloric surplus will definitely add muscle as well as strength! Since it's an LP, I highly suggest picking up some micro-plates, since you might not be able to add 5 lbs to your bench each week. I recommend adding only 2.5 lbs to your bench & OHP, and between 5 and 7.5 lbs to your squat & deadlift each weekly cycle. You'll enjoy a more steady gain in strength for a longer period. Oh, and if you're using the nSuns spreadsheet for your weights, tick the "kilograms" instead of "pounds" box, after you've entered your starting weights for lifts; then it will display the weight to be lifted in 2.5 increments. Just use pounds instead of kilos, but use the numbers the kilos setting gives you. Does that make sense?

u/TehGogglesDoNothing · 2 pointsr/bodyweightfitness

I have the same problem. I got one of these. It mounts inside the door frame and nothing sticks out to the side. I leave it in its upright position at all times. Just make sure to mount it high enough that people won't knock their head on it.

u/3rdweal · 2 pointsr/bodyweightfitness

For less than $100 you can get one of these, a small price to pay for peace of mind. I've been doing inverted rows on a 2x4 between two chair, it works but the wood tends to slip.

u/ghostinthepost · 2 pointsr/homegym

It's this one, http://www.amazon.com/Black-Mountain-Stand-3000-Pound-Dip/dp/B00EPKRUGS/

It's pretty good. Doesn't move around or shake when you use it. Also works for like body weight rows. Still it's kind of expensive for single function equipment.

u/0000GKP · 2 pointsr/bodyweightfitness

The half rack at least gives you the option to lift weights later. I went with a full rack (Titan T-2) because I wanted to lift weights and I could get a multigrip pull-up bar instead of just a straight bar. I prefer the separate dip station. This style works for inverted rows also.

u/iams3b · 2 pointsr/Fitness

Iron Gym (doorway pullup bar) pull up bar is pretty much the only major requirement. You can probably start the recommended routine after that.

I also purchased this dib bar to make doing dips easier, but it's not necessary

u/mysecondattempt · 2 pointsr/bodyweightfitness

I got this Dip Station because I dont have any parallel bars or chairs heavy enough to dip on. So far it amazing and I can also do my Hrows on it!

u/lentil_king · 2 pointsr/GripTraining

I did leg-assisted for the fat handles. Still worked pretty nicely.

For the rotating fat handles, I made them to spec but ended up just taking the PVC and putting it on my door-frame chin-up bar. Same effect, I figured.

Did something a bit different for the towel hangs. I draped a judo belt over a [dip stand] (http://www.amazon.ca/Black-Mountain-Products-Stand-Dip/dp/B00EPKRUGS), grabbed an end in each hand, and held myself up like that. We do something similar in Judo practice and it was very difficult, heh. It was kind of like doing rows with the belt, except stopping at the top of the motion. Let me know if you think I'll get the same effect from that.

u/NuclearCouch · 2 pointsr/homegym

It does not come with a barbell, it comes with a chin up bar that mounts to the top. Still a great price IMO for beginners, I've heard nothing but good things about this company.

I have a small cheap setup currently with a shitty benching rack with the built in bench. I want this rack so I can squat without almost dying.

For a bench if you're just doing something like normal stronglifts with normal flat bench go with: a Marcy Flat Utility Weight Bench, Black https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00G44X9D6/ref=cm_sw_r_api_iFzLxb10MB8ZR. Really cheap and well built.

When you start getting into the adjustable type of bench, that's when it becomes bitch. The prices shoot up. For adjustable I'd go with this guy: adidas Utility Bench https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0184R8VD8/ref=cm_sw_r_api_jJzLxbXTAEZPS. Cheap and not too badly built, it's only weighted to 300 pounds so it's obviously not gonna work for long (if you're getting strong and bigger ;)) it's pretty stupid that it has a leg attachment but you can most likely get away with just skipping it's installation.

For a bar, you want Olympic. Look on Amazon, CAP makes cheap stuff that will work until you get big enough to go model and make money.

Alright well I've looked up some stuff, your going to want a power cage with olympic weights and a bench at the bare minimum.

Some stuff I've found about $950 before shippping:
cage 390: https://www.titan.fitness/cages-and-racks/t-3-racks/titan-t-3-series-short-power-rack-36-deep.html
Titan cages aren't as nice as rogue, but they are still very nice cages that has a wide variety of attachments you can have. Since your on a somewhat limited budget and this will save you $400

weights/bar 190: https://www.walmart.com/ip/CAP-Barbell-300-lb-Olympic-Set-Includes-7-Bar/27137654?u1=V1c5ZTFRb0tNcXdBQVNnclhqWUFBQUND&oid=368707.1&wmlspartner=NKa3hZyYoHA&sourceid=32308939332914019695&affillinktype=10&veh=aff
This is a very cheap set, but this will get you some starter weights and a starter bar. Since your a complete beginner, this bar should be fine for a while. Most bars will bend before they break so you'll know when you need to replace it, but probably around a 315 squat or deadlift.

bench incline/decline 300: https://www.amazon.com/Rep-Adjustable-Bench-Capacity-Incline/dp/B00YNS7D9G/ref=sr_1_17?s=exercise-and-fitness&ie=UTF8&qid=1500496016&sr=1-17&keywords=adjustable+bench
I don't know a lot about this bench, but I like it because it has a high weight capacity and it is incline and decline. This will give you a much wider range of stuff to do vs a flat or just an incline bench.

landmine attachemnt for cage 30: https://www.titan.fitness/landmine-rack-attachment.html
A landmine is super nice for rows and I even use it for shoulders

adjustable dumbbells 41: https://www.amazon.com/Barbell-Solid-20-Inch-Dumbbell-Handle/dp/B0010YOBB4/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1500496213&sr=8-1&keywords=adjustable+olympic+dumbbells
Adjustable dumbbells, more inconvenient than individual weights or the quick change sets, but this gives you a lot of flexibility for very cheap and you can re use the weights you already have.

EDIT:

Since I'm still about 800 short I'l throw some more suggestions:

Maybe upgrade the bar - this way you don't need to worry about it bending on you or you growing out of it while your in college. The rogue bars are suggested a lot on here because they are good quality for their price. They should hold up for a very very long time and be a nice bar. When looking for a bar, the only thing you really need to look at is weight capacity and the knurling (groves in the bar for grip). You probably want center knurling for your squats. There are other factors with bars like the amount of whip, how much the collars spin and such but you'll pretty much want a good quality general purpose bar.
$275
http://www.roguefitness.com/rogue-ohio-power-bar

Lat pulldown / cable row machine $200
https://www.amazon.com/Akonza-Machine-Fitness-Attachment-Pulldown/dp/B01FYLE7OY/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1500497021&sr=8-1&keywords=cable+pulldown+machine
I know nothing about this particular machine, but it looks like it has decent reviews. This will allow you to do rows and pull downs.

You may want to build a platform for your cage, you'll want to do this with plywood and horsestall mats so that you can do deadlifts without breaking your floor. This will probably run you 300, probably less, but lets go with 300.

u/AppleTreeShadow · 2 pointsr/homegym

Is the rep bench this one? Where did you buy it? https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B00YNS7D9G/ref=mp_s_a_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1523242338&sr=8-1&pi=AC_SX236_SY340_FMwebp_QL65&keywords=rep+fitness+adjustable+bench&dpPl=1&dpID=41stcs3vI1L&ref=plSrch

could be onset of tendinitis, or weak joints. Try this to strengthened joints:

https://www.amazon.com/Resistance-Preventing-Tendonitis-Tendinitis-Resistances/dp/B014VXSED6

Start with green color then move to blue. NYT has article on how to use it.

Secondly, roll out your arms. They could have trigger points that might need releasing.

u/azrael201 · 2 pointsr/tennis

my personal opinion is tennis elbow is likely caused by a mechanical issue in your stroke (ie violent swinging causing mishits). It is easily amplified with heavier racquets such as APD and PDT or high string tensions. I know pros are exceptions but you have to wonder how they can sustain playing day in/out with heavy racquets with high string tensions (eg Wawrinka goes 60lbs with stiff polys). Obviously once you get tennis elbow you should follow injury protocols and rehab. Check out the tennis elbow therapy bar. I use the green one when I watch TV or just walking around the apt.

u/cbrndn90 · 2 pointsr/amateur_boxing

If you're interested in relieving it, check out the Theraband / Tyler Twist bar. I got a mild case of tennis elbow when I first started boxing 3 months ago and after 2 weeks ordered one of these (green).

It went away after a week and a half of doing 10-12 reps every day. Now I do it every so often as a preventative. Google the youtube instructions!

One more comment:

I've had occasional problems along this line, and I find stretching and exercises help. You should probably be careful to not be too stressful while you're having pain, but you can search around for wrist stretches. As you start to feel better, you might want to try some arm exercises with elastic bands, or something like this (no affiliation).

u/Kawzuality · 2 pointsr/GripTraining

Have you had the chance to read up on the Theraband Flexbar? Years of climbing followed up with years of powerlifting coupled with inadequate extensor training left me with debilitating tendinitis in both forearms. I was referred to a PT and over an eight month period, I worked through a variety of exercises using the Flexbars, working up through the various resistances. As a result, I have been pain free for about two years now. I love them and would highly recommend giving them a go - I continue to use them as both a means of warm up and general rehab. I started using a belt when I reached 300lbs deadlifts for reps and 2 plate squats for reps, though it isn't entirely necessary. It just feels more comfortable to do heavy sets with a belt.

I'm sure there are many people who hit 5 plate deadlifts and 4 plate squats without ever wearing a belt.

This is the belt I use. I have zero complaints about it, works great for me.

u/KeplerNeel · 2 pointsr/bodybuilding

I have this one. No complaints it's just a simple belt

Valor cable rack . For the price (~$270 with free shipping on amazon) I had low expectations but it actually works really well! Pulls smoothly and can take a fair amount of weight. Has a small footprint as well. Hope this works for you!

u/playingwithdice · 2 pointsr/homegym

I don't have a homegym yet but I have my eye on this rack. From the few I've talked to on this thread who have it, it seems like a solid rack. I do like doing most of my workouts inside the rack so I do like a deeper rack though. Good luck in your search.

u/Jami3San · 2 pointsr/homegym

You might find that "raised bar" near your feet will still end up in the way when trying to squat. I had one similar and it was a pain, I had to squat off the front facing the other way (negating the benefit of having mirrors)

What about this

Try a velcro belt, I I got this one and it's been great. For myself, velcro belts fit better while in the start position and Ilya even used the exact model in 2012.

And improvise something like this: https://www.amazon.com/Wrist-Forearm-Blaster-by-GoFit/dp/B0007W2FJA

u/oO0-__-0Oo · 1 pointr/Firearms

Find a pullup bar and just hang on it for a certain duration (i.e. one "set").

Something like this:
http://www.amazon.com/Wrist-Forearm-Blaster-by-GoFit/dp/B0007W2FJA

Do both directions - absolute murder on the forearms (which house the muscles of the hands). Wrist strength is as important as actual "grip" strength for shooting.

If you have a gym membership, you can get into the squat rack and do really heavy barbell holds.

u/chewymidget · 1 pointr/ketogains

I wouldn't recommend using straps unless you are doing some insane amount of weight. They will hurt you in the long run if you rely on them. Doing something like this would be better in order to get your forearm strength up. Though you can make your own stick with rope for cheaper.

Which style of adjustable dumbbells are you looking for? Amazon currently has a single 10-90lb Bowflex dumbbell for $299, but to get a pair in that price range that go up to 100 lbs each you'll probably have to get one of the mini-barbell type sets with cast iron plates rather than the quicker ones with a pin or dial to set the weight. I know I've looked for used Bowflex sets on Craigslist before and they're still pretty expensive in my area at least.

u/eraserman · 1 pointr/homefitness

I'm not a fan of the "regular" bowflex with the rods, what I don't like about it is that resistance is uneven, easier in the beginning of the movement and harder towards the end.

What I mean by bowflex dumbbells is this: http://www.amazon.com/Bowflex-SelectTech-1090-Adjustable-Dumbbell/dp/B000OC5RXE/ref=pd_sbs_sg_1?ie=UTF8&refRID=04EGJY5J14QJY3HZQ9MM

There are similar dumbbell systems done by PowerBlock or IronMaster (google them). I personally have a set of PowerBlocks and I love them, but they weren't cheap.

By resistance I mean enough weight, sometimes we get some posts around here saying something like "I have 10 pound dumbbells, what can I do with them", the answer is that unfortunately 10 pounds is not enough weight for much.

  • Concept 2 Rower (you can park it vertically to save space)

  • Optional: Assault Bike

  • (diy) Oly Platform for lifts (how high is the ceiling, C&J / Snatch viable ? )

  • Bow Flex 1090 Dumbells

I agree with Tikke. Cool idea, but I would not spend that much on something so simple that could be made easily from items at your local lumber store.

Plus, this is only $35.

u/SunknLiner · 1 pointr/homegym

I like the set just fine. I weighed the plates when I got them, and they weigh evenly to one another and within an acceptable range, e.g. the 45's both weighed in at 44.25, and the 25's both weighed in at 23.75. The sizes are fine, although something is a little off - possibly with the tree I have and not the weights themselves. I have this tree and I haven't been able to get all of the plates on the side pegs without one set butting up against another. Right now I just have the 5's on the bottom crossbar peg, and it's fine that way. Until I worked up to more weight, I bought a set of these 10lb bumpers to raise the bar up to the right height when doing deadlifts etc. The clips that come with the bar work, but are very bare bones, so I upgraded to these.

u/ackilleeus · 1 pointr/homegym
u/Tofinochris · 1 pointr/homegym

Here's the details on the stuff:

Power Rack. Had this about 6 weeks and I'm extremely happy with it. Looks fine, feels very sturdy, no feeling of tipping or instability even when I hang from the bar at front. Paint scratches when you move and insert the spotter bars but what do you want for $350 shipped. It's held 215 on multiple occasions with no issues. If you lift significantly heavier than this (300+) you may want to read reviews first, or invest in a less-starter rack, but for many/most people this will be fine forever. It's dead easy to assemble if you have a socket set and if you don't, great opportunity to get one, they're cheap! Assembly can be done mostly solo but the final bits really need a second person to hold stuff in place while bolts are inserted. Rack comes shipped in 2 or 3 (can't remember) boxes which are pretty unwieldy and heavy.

I went with this CAP barbell. This suits my needs very well with great knurling and came without bend, and I'm unlikely to put a bend in it with my sub-300 deadlifts. The barbell ships in a fun 7 foot cylindrical tube which caused the dude at the mail place to nearly topple over because he expected it to be light for some reason.

I also got this plate tree which holds 2x 45# bumpers, 2x 45# plates, and 2x 25#, 2x 10#, 4x 5#, and 2x 2.5#. Does the trick but paint scratches off the pegs like crazy but is easily cleaned up. Single box, about 30 pounds.

The bench is this one by Marcy. I wanted a simple bench and that's what I got. Great bench for the price and I haven't had any instability problems. Had this for a year and used up to 70# dumbbells and 215# barbell with it (I'm 215). Most weight total that's been on it was a 270# friend benching 185# for sets and he found it fine.

Assorted stuff: got these puzzle mats which do the trick for the right price and are stowable unlike a permanent mat. As I mentioned elsewhere the 45# bumpers are meant to mitigate any floor impact, and I'm not terribly concerned with keeping this floor perfect anyway (it's 10 year old laminate on top of concrete, and the "path" is linoleum). The plates were from a sale at the local FitnessDerp store (not its real name) and were 85 cents a pound -- I never saw any on Craigslist for less than that in the month I looked. Finally just some collars.

The cat in the picture highly recommends this crinkle tunnel.

u/vegetablesactivated · 1 pointr/Fitness

My SO is 6'3" so we got a raised pull up bar. He really prefers it and I can reach the shorter bar. It did leave a little divot on the door frame but it's not that bad. Be sure to measure your door frame and the trim before you order anything.

u/Precisionist174 · 1 pointr/wrestling

It's elevated which is nice, and extremely sturdy, and if you don't want to order it off the internet, I think Big5 and other fitness stores usually carry them. I had one but I traded it with a friend and bought a new one that isn't elevated and I wish I had bought the elevated one. Well worth the money.

I had olympic weights with a rack and bench for over a decade, but I rarely used them. Even after I started using them regularly I never made as many gains as I did with a pull up bar and resistance bands. Going from 0 dead hang pull ups to many without a resistance band is a wonderful feeling! Seeing great progress in very short time is such a great motivator. I bought this set a while back when I was first getting things going and it was on sale at the time for $180. The bar is crap but it'll hold the weight (i think 300lb limit). I later bought the training barbell from American barbell when is was on sale for $250 shipped. My bench starting out was the rep fitness flat bench
and its still going, though I stopped benching ~5 months ago. My original rack was wooden and home made, but I saved up some cash and bought this rack, which I love. I also bought safeties for it, but those mostly collect dust now. My Iron plates now just sit in the corner waiting for someone to buy them as I only use bumpers now, which are a mix between the vaughn plates from fringe, onefitwonder plates from fringe and comp bumpers from rogue as well as rogue change plates.

Its been a long time coming and I'm still assembling what I want (ie more bumpers and one day a GHD), but for now it's perfect. I lift in there about 5 hours a week, minimum. If you're lucky, your area will have a good selection on craigslist, mine doesn't so I've had to buy new.

But when you start lifting and squatting heavy you should really make room for the power rack. Sometimes you get stuck at the bottom of a squat and need to bail.

Then add the bench to slide in and out when needed: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B002QJZAE4?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_detailpage_o05_s00

this looks pretty good if you're in the US and if you want the one from the joists

I myself own something similar to this but it was only $40 when I got it. I got this sort of bar, as the design of my home required that I mount it onto something I had to build myself.

You could use a 2x6 and mount that to the vertical studs with some lag screws (3.5" quarter inch lag screws are more than enough) and then mount the bar to the 2x6.

Personally, I like the one on the wall, as you can set it at a height that lets you get up over the bar as well

Use the money you save and get some gymnastics rings too!

Here's the Amazon link. It has far less reviews than the one from Iron Gym, but I have both and the Perfect Pullup is much better construction, imo, plus you can close the door with it installed.

One of the things I didn't like with the Iron Gym was that you had to take it down if you wanted to close the door. It only takes a few minutes, but sometimes that can make a difference, especially if you just want to knock out a couple aka greasing the groove.

You also have the option of doing Australian pullups and standing rows which is great when you've maxed out on pullups for the time being, or if you have an SO or someone else who cant do pull ups.

Maybe some weight lifting hooks to take your wrists out of the equation? Would lifts that put weight on your wrists but where you keep them straight work? Bench/deadlift/pullup/etc? Whatever solution you come up with, you're definitely going to want to up your protein intake - if you don't eat enough protein, you'll just be wasting time lifting.

u/Gawd1 · 1 pointr/Fitness

Why not try some deadlift hooks?

u/niggytardust2000 · 1 pointr/Fitness

Obligatory: I'm not a doctor, ask a professional blah blah blah...

Here are some ideas of the top of my head:

  • Try using " weight lifting hooks " http://www.amazon.com/Power-Weight-Lifting-Hooks-Weightlifting/dp/B00DVM34NO

  • try some exercises using a " Zercher Grip " ... These are great for overall strength and core strength, but probably won't hit your arms and forearms as much as you'd like... ( they may work your biceps a bit )

  • Research some rock climbing exercises, Rock climbers often try to build strength for situations where they can only use a few fingers at a time.

  • pushups with using your fists instead of your palms - this might be a simple way to work your triceps.

If I were you, Id really do my research on the UCL though and make sure that whatever movements you choose don't use this ligament....

Trust me, it's much better to let your body heal than trying to rush things and reinsure yourself.

4 weeks isn't that long at all, maybe it's best to just lay off lifting for a month.
u/dynawhey · 1 pointr/Fitness

There are assists you can use like lifting hooks that can do most of the gripping. Additionally, you can use lifting straps but tie knots instead of using your fingers to grip.

u/QuantumRealm · 1 pointr/powerlifting

Will straps help? Or is that still too much gripping? There exist those straps with kind of a hook instead of a piece of cloth to wrap around the bar, maybe that'll work for you.. Something like this https://www.amazon.com/Power-Weight-Lifting-Hooks-Weightlifting/dp/B00DVM34NO

I've read a ton of reviews of power racks recently and think I've finally narrowed it down. Right now I'm using a shitty bench with vertical bars that I'm pretty much at the weight limit for.

I'm looking at getting the Rep PR 1100 with dip bars and this bench. I live in colorado so I can in person pick up the power rack and not have to pay shipping.

My budget is right around $300 and since it's probably not safe for me to use my current bench much longer I can't really afford to wait and save up for a really nice power rack.

Is there any reason not to get this combo? I weigh 145lbs and I'm currently benching 150lbs. It looks like this combination will last me a good while and meet all of my current needs.

You could try secondhand stores or gym equipment resalers for dumbbells. Something like this would take up a lot less space than individual dumbbells, and may be cheaper than Bowflex-style adjustables (depending on your needs, obv).

I own a flat bench like this that stands up in the corner when I'm not using it. I use a stability ball if I want to do something like an incline dumbbell press at home, but a foldable incline bench like this might also work well.

I got my barbell from Rogue in their clearance area. It's the B&R bar since I like the feel of raw metal. The knurling isn't too bad.

Editing to add more: Here's a link to build your own platform that I followed. It would be better to have a helper with the materials because they're kinda heavy to lift/position by yourself. Especially the horse mat. I used 3/4" plywood and 3/4" MDF for the top part so I used 3/4" horse mat to try to make things as flush as possible.

I got this flat bench from Amazon. I'm happy with it. An adjustable would have been preferred but this serves it's purpose just fine and didn't break the bank.

Here are the rings I have, also from Amazon. I compared them to my friends Rogue rings and the differences are minimal. They might be a little "rough" but after using them for a bit, they'll break in and be fine.

All said and done, my whole setup was right around $1500 and I can do almost anything I want.

Well look at Excuse McGee over here! For the record, it won't be 250 lbs. You can use the 50 pound adjustable dumbbells just fine for a moderate workout. But fine, nothing too heavy:

Push up bars for greater range of motion

I use these same doorway pull bars, they work fine

I have something like this. It has rubber on the ends, support up to 110KG(242.5lbs). I'm like 75KG so worth for me and no damage to the door frame after about 3 years of use.

Garren Fitness Maximiza Pull Up... https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00RJFRV1K?ref=yo_pop_ma_swf this has served me well. I looked at cheaper ones like the above but settled on this because the customer service has good reviews (The company seems to stand behind their product) and I also didn’t want an eye sore hanging from my door frame. This one looks pretty good and and almost blends in. Also the foam around it is tough and comfortable on the hands at the same time. Been using it for several months now and it’s held up exceptionally well. It was easy to install and I did have a question which I asked the customer service team about and they were very responsive and helpful.

Hmm.. I've seen ones that jut out from walls at crossfit gyms, but they're metal and powdercoated and would probably need strong anchoring.

What about pull up bars that screw into the door frame? I have one similar to this one in the doorway to my bedroom.

Door closes no problem and it isn't very noticeable.

What are you looking to get? A flat bench or FID/adjustable?

Flat bench - I've heard good things about this one. I was going to get it until I decided on an FID.

FID - I have this one for my garage gym and have no complaints about it.

Thinking about getting this bench by Rep Fitness, but found this one buy Fitness Reality which seem significantly cheaper. Which one do you recomend? Also, how are the width on both? Is it wide enough to not make me feel uncomfortable?

u/UncrunchyTaco · 1 pointr/Fitness

A little late here, but here is my setup:

  1. Power rack and flat bench - I bought the Rep Fitness set here that also came with dip attachments. It seems to be out of stock, but it was is $470. Maybe you can find it on the Rep site. There are certainly cheaper (and much more expensive) options.
  2. Barbell and weights - you will find tons of people advocating for spending hundreds of dollars on a good barbell. You can do that, but I bought this super cheap set from Dick's. It has a 45lb barbell and 255lb of plates for $200! I've been using the barbell for over a year and it is still fine.
  3. You should strongly consider building yourself a lifting platform. I used the guide here. I think the materials cost me around $150?

    I also eventually added:

  4. An adjustable bench to do incline. It was $299 when I bought it. Kind of expensive, but lots of brands had pretty low weight capacities that made me nervous. Maybe there are exercises that can substitute for incline if you don't want to invest in one of these.
  5. A set of Powerblocks to do dumbbell exercises. I found a relatively cheap set off craigslist from some dude who I suspect stole a whole crate of them. You probably don't need dumbbells, but there are lots more options for accessories with them. And you can definitely find cheaper options than Powerblocks.
  6. An ab wheel. I highly recommend this if planks are starting to get easy. Super cheap.

before I read your review I ordered Rep Adjustable Bench – AB-3000 FID

I think I will love this one as there are many positive reviews on amazon/youtube, returning that bench thru UPS pick up lol

u/acatisfinetwo · 1 pointr/powerlifting

No, you need to rehab your tendons with a Flexbar or something like that. Also, whatever activity is causing your tennis elbow needs to modified to get rid of the pain.

Now, it does help keep your elbows tucked in and may relieve extra pressure poor bench form could put on your elbows. But if bench is causing your elbow aids, fix your bench form first.

u/Blubrdblizzrd · 1 pointr/weightlifting

I've had computer elbow for a while now from scrolling reddit at work. I just got a Theraband Flexbar from Amazon, that I've read all over the place is supposed to be very helpful for chronic elbow injuries. After each of the three sessions I've done with it, I notice it does have an acute effect, but hopefully long term strengthening of my forearms will cure the root problem.

Other than that, smashing, voodoo floss, arm stretches, sleeves, ibuprofen, and all that stuff helps. Also, do chin ups instead of pull ups.

u/Nanoblock · 1 pointr/Fitness

This might help. I've not tried it yet but have heard others recommend it for elbow pain.

belt

u/Doritos2458 · 1 pointr/Fitness

I'd take a look at this one. They are a small company that seems like they are just starting out. I bought one, and then got an email from one of the co-owners thanking me, and saying I have lifetime guarantee / free replacement on the belt, plus a 90% off any other products they make in the future. Right now, thats not many, but they just sent out an email to the registered customers saying they were making lifting straps and wrist straps as well soon, in addition to clothing. Really awesome customer service

The belt itself is solid. Feels (and smells nicely) like genuine leather. Not like that cardboard-y imitation leather you see some "leather" products are made of. Not to mention, when you order it, its not ultra stiff. I can take a picture of mine when I get home, if you want proof.

u/Lumberjack1286 · 1 pointr/Fitness

This is the belt I use. Doesn’t have to be anything super crazy. This belt has great reviews, and I absolutely love it as well.

As for when to start using a belt, it depends on the strength of your core and back. The more you use a belt, the more you potentially weaken these muscles because they aren’t handling as much of a load. I feel fairly comfortable up to 315, beyond that, I really like the extra support.

u/Q_Q_Q_Q_Q_Q_Q_Q_Q · 1 pointr/Fitness

I've read great reviews on that one. But living in Canada, the price of shipping, import, taxes and etc almost doubles when you buy from independent US sites. This is the first time in months and months I've ever seen it out of stock, but the Valor Fitness BD-62 generally retailed for $225.00 on Amazon. I hope they get more in stock soon.

u/NotChristina · 1 pointr/homegym

Since I have my home gym in a second bedroom, I have issues with height and overall footprint (small room). I bought one of these earlier this year and have been quite happy with it. Natively takes 1” plates but bought adapters and it’s all good.

It’s definitely on the shorter side so I do a lot of exercises seated to get better ROM, but it’s been perfect for the limited amount of vertical (and horizontal) space I have.

Question about the valor BD-62-

Has anyone tried it with just the top wall mount bracket?

In the pic theres a bracket at the top and at the bottom, but the way my wall is, the bottom half is wainscotting which would be a lot tougher to screw into. Would just the top screwed into studs behind the drywall be enough?

If you want to look another route and if you have the room for it, I've heard great things about this cable crossover. If you don't have the room but do have a wall you can bolt into, there's also this one from Valor. Neither is much more expensive than the Rogue Pulley, and you might get more bang for your buck.

I don't own either, but I did a lot of research on these over the last few months. I was debating between one of these options for a while before I ended up scoring a half cage/smith on craigslist with a top crossover and top/bottom lat pulley system attached.

u/Me_Like_To_Pew_Pew · 1 pointr/homegym

I stated buying things as I found them on sale. The bar and weights I bought on sale from Dicks Sporting Goods a few months before I finally bought the rack. The bench can be removed and I have attachments to do leg extensions/ leg curls and preacher curls. It’s just an ok bench that is affordable.

The rack is this rack from amazon. Fitness Reality X-Class Light Commercial High Capacity Olympic Power Cage https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01N7Z2GGN/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_skc0Db0A64Z91

Thanks for the reply. I wonder if the assembly instructions are unclear? Here's some of the other reviews saying the safety bars don't fit:

https://www.amazon.com/gp/customer-reviews/R496ERP075QSY/ref=cm_cr_othr_d_rvw_ttl?ie=UTF8&ASIN=B01N7Z2GGN

As I looked into this more, I see that actually most reviews aren't about the safety bars not fitting -- most reviews are about the safety bars being difficult/time consuming to adjust.

https://www.amazon.com/gp/customer-reviews/ROGJXZOJGULYW/ref=cm_cr_arp_d_rvw_ttl?ie=UTF8&ASIN=B01N7Z2GGN

It sounds like that is a different issue, and by design.

Was about to invest in this myself until Amazon's price unexpectedly jumped $190 to 789. Not sure what's up, but neither Fitness Reality or Amazon was willing to help. Guess I'll wait and see if it drops again, as the previous price held for 6 months, practically the entire life of the product under the FR brand name...

I love lifting at home just for the convenience, but doing it right is kind of space and cost-intensive. To do it "right", you're looking at an Olympic barbell, impact resistance flooring, and a power cage (so you can bench and squat alone without risk) and bench. About $500-$1000 and about 4'x8' of space. Dumbbells are more space convenient, but harder to work with, especially the ones that can be loaded with enough weight to make squats and deadlifts challenging for a while (like these). Don't underestimate the amount of weight you'll need. You'll get stronger fast if you eat and sleep appropriately (lots of both). A pullup bar and a program like this is good cheap home option, but it does make it hard to really challenge your legs and back (the largest, most powerful muscles in your body).

A gym is certainly less of an investment, and who gives a fuck if you're skinny?

Well I think because of things like this, examine their design http://www.amazon.com/Bowflex-SelectTech-1090-Adjustable-Dumbbell/dp/B000OC5RXE/ the length always remains the same despite the weight used? How is that sensible. Infact it makes no sense to me and compared to these http://www.amazon.com/Ironmaster-75-Quick-Lock-Adjustable-Dumbbell/dp/B000GE5QRM/ Bowflex leaves a lot to be desired. The actual Bowflex resistance machine like the Bowflex Blaze Home Gym http://www.amazon.com/Bowflex-Blaze-Home-Gym/dp/B000GRDS6U/ costs about the same as getting good plates and dumbbell handles like these http://www.newyorkbarbells.com/im-0030.html

With dumbbells you have more versatility in my opinion, get some wooden blocks to stand on and you have a reasonably good squat to practice. Overhead press, chest press even if on floor, etc.

Just a few thoughts

u/loorinm · -2 pointsr/bodyweightfitness

In my opinion, that type of pullup bar is dangerous, regardless of the quality. The chance of a slight swing or bumping into something while on it are too high, then the whole thing slips off the door frame.
