Worthwhile games under $20

Wii U:

Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate (Currently $20 on Amazon via third-party seller) - A solid action game with good online play.

Scribblenauts Unlimited ($17 on Amazon via third-party retailer, inc. shipping) and Unmasked ($18 on Amazon) - A fun little creative toy where you solve puzzles by creating... well, just about anything.

Deus Ex: Human Revolution (Currently $15 on Amazon) - A superb FPS, and the Wii U version is arguably the definitive console version of the game.

Batman: Arkham City: Armored Edition ($11 on BestBuy.com) - The definitive version of one of the best superhero games of all time.

Tekken Tag Tournament 2 ($19 on Amazon) - A good fighting game.

Injustice: Gods Among Us ($14 on BestBuy.com) - A surprisingly good fighting game

Lego Marvel (Currently $20 on Amazon) - One of the better of the LEGO games, and the Wii U gamepad means that co-op play can be done with each player getting their own screen.

Assassin's Creed III (Currently $12 on Amazon via third-party seller, inc. shipping) and Black Flag ($19 on Amazon via third-party retailer, inc. shipping) - They're not really all that much better on the Wii U than other platforms, but if you don't have them yet these are decent entries in the series.

Resident Evil Revelations ($17 on BestBuy.com) - A decent entry in the series.

Wii:

Super Mario Galaxy ($20 on Amazon) - One of the best Mario games ever made, and generally considered to be one of the best videogames of all time.

Resident Evil 4 ($15 on Amazon) - One of the best survival horror games ever made.

Okami ($20 on Amazon) - A Zelda-style game with a beautiful calligraphy style.

Sin & Punishment: Star Successor ($18 on Amazon) - An action-packed shooter

Kirby's Epic Yarn ($14 on Amazon via third-party seller, inc. shipping) - It's so saccharine-cute it'll make your teeth rot, but if you can put up with that, it's an extremely inventive and fun platformer.

No More Heroes ($19 on Amazon) - A fun, very silly, violent action game.

Trauma Center: Second Opinion ($18 on Amazon) - Part surgery sim, part wicked hard arcade game.

De Blob ($18 on Amazon via third-party, inc. shipping) - A fun, inventive platformer where you bounce around to paint the scenery.

MadWorld ($11 on Amazon via third-party, inc. shipping) - A good, hyper-violent action game.

Wii U Nintendo eShop:

Shovel Knight - Old-school platformer goodness, designed like someone took the best parts of your favorite NES games and mashed them all together.

Art of Balance - A puzzle game that has you stacking blocks. It's really well-made.

Guacamelee: Super Turbo Championship Edition - A truly excellent Metroidvania-style game with a killer fighting engine and a fun, silly luchador theme. If you don't already have this on another platform, you need to get it.

Trine 2: Director's Cut - An excellent platform/puzzle game, and the Wii U version is arguably the best because the touchscreen is integrated very well.

WiiWare:

World of Goo - A superb puzzle game where you must construct various structures to get your goo to the exit.

Lost Winds 1 & 2 - Very good platformers that make good use of the Wii remote to make the gameplay interesting.

Bomberman Blast - 8-player online Bomberman. Aww yisssss.

Wii U Virtual Console - Too many good old-school games to list.

Wii Virtual Console - Tons and tons of good old-school games. It's not quite as convenient as the Wii U virtual console, because you have to go into Wii mode to play them and you can't play them with the Wii U gamepad, but the selection on the Wii's Virtual Console is far, far better than on the Wii U, and at the rate Nintendo is adding games to the Wii U Virtual Console, it looks like it'll probably stay that way for a long time. Keep in mind that if Nintendo adds a game to the Wii U Virtual Console that you already have on the Wii Virtual Console, they'll give you a discount on it to entice you to upgrade, so don't hold off just because you're hoping the game you want will come to the Wii U Virtual Console if it's already on the Wii Virtual Console.

Edit: Well, damn. Today Nintendo announced what is kinda' a game-changer - they're releasing Wii games directly for download on the Wii U's eShop for $20 each ($10 each on the week they're first released). The first game, Super Mario Galaxy 2, is out now, and the next two games will be Metroid Prime Trilogy and Punch-Out!!

All three of those games are extremely good, and have been selling for far more than the asking price (Metroid Prime Trilogy was $60-100 used before this news). If you're looking for cheap Wii U games and never got these titles on the Wii, Nintendo has just dropped the gauntlet with a deal you can't refuse.

Instead of opining on which version of TP is best, how about I give you what I feel are the strengths of the GCN and the Wii versions and from this information you can make an educated choice as to which better suits you?

---
GAMECUBE VERSION:

  • There's a Web site called GameRankings, which averages review scores and is respected as an authority by Guinness World Records. On this site, the GCN edition is more highly rated than the Wii edition; the former has a rating of 96 while the latter has a rating of 94.58. The critical hivemind thus considers GCN TP to be slightly better than Wii TP.

  • The sword controls are more solid and less gimmicky. I had more fun with swordplay in the GCN TP than I did in any other Zelda game. On the Wii, to swing the sword you swing the Wiimote. In my view this did not feel intuitive but shoehorned, and it sometimes did not work when executing the Hidden Skills.

  • Hyrule is properly oriented. To make Link right-handed, the Wii version flips the whole world of Hyrule on the x axis. I disagree with this for two reasons. First, the locations of Hyrulean places are inconsistent with their locations in other Zelda games. Second, this introduces a number of unresolved curiosities, such as the one where the sun rises in the west and sets in the east (?!).

  • The game can be completed more quickly by speedrunners. This probably doesn't matter unless you are a speedrunner or intend to speedrun the game sometime in the future.

  • There's modware called Action Replay (AR), which changes game offsets and is marketed as a cheat device. As the GCN AR has been around the longest, the AR community has discovered more codes for the GCN TP.

  • The GCN TP does not have the Shad glitch. Essentially, if you save and quit in a specific area of the Wii TP, a character named Shad disappears. Because talking to Shad is necessary to advance the plot, it becomes impossible to advance your file without special external fixes.

  • The player has more control over the camera. This can be a blessing if you're big on exploration, a quality for which the Zelda series is known.

    ---

    WII VERSION:

  • The Wii TP can render in the 16:9 aspect ratio. This makes for a better picture on a standard HDTV.

  • You have two additional item buttons. On the GCN edition, items are assigned to the bean-shaped X and Y buttons and the sword is mapped to B. On the Wii edition, items are assigned to three of the four cardinal directions on the directional pad. The Wii TP maps the sword to the motions of the Wiimote, which further frees up B. With more item buttons you can do more actions in less time.

  • There are items and parts of the game which require you to aim. Not only are the controls for these parts better on the Wii version, but for some of them you can move while aiming. This isn't possible on GCN.

  • The Wii TP is cheaper. On Amazon, the GCN TP sells at a price over 3× that of the Wii TP.

    ---

In addition to this, there are minor differences that are neither good nor bad. For example, the Wii version features a fairy that functions as a targeting reticule. I won't bother to comprehensively list these.

Hopefully you'll find this list to be of use.
u/HenkPoley · 6 pointsr/wii

You might want to use Amazon's "Customers who viewed this item..." feature.

Apart from clicking around on their site, it works like this:

http://www.amazon.com/Legend-Zelda-Twilight-Princess-Nintendo-Wii/dp/B000FQBPCQ/ref=pd_sxp_f_pt

Take the part after /dp/, so B000FQBPCQ in this case. Put http://www.amazon.com/sim/ in front, and /2/&pf=video_games at the end, like this:

http://www.amazon.com/sim/B000FQBPCQ/2/&pf=video_games

Wiis, or Wii Us? I'm going to assume Wii, but if you mean Wii U, I can also help. I also don't know exactly how these Wiis will be used. Are they meant to be used in a clubhouse-like setting, or will they be taken from place to place for one kid to play at a time?

If you bought Wiis, you would more than likely be being used. You could check a local Gamestop to see if they're selling them used, but they may not. Like, I know my local Gamestop only sells PS3s and 360s used. If they don't have Wiis, you can definitely buy off of eBay or Amazon. I suggest you try to get controllers bundled with the console wherever you get them, because buying controllers on their own are like $20, $50 if you want a Motionplus (which is just an extension that improves the controller) The advantage of buying a Wii over a Wii U would be you would have a lot of money left over for games, since the console itself is more inexpensive, and the games are cheaper.

Although it's an older console, the Wii still has plenty of great games. [Mario Kart Wii] (http://www.amazon.com/Mario-Kart-Wii-Wheel-Nintendo/dp/B000XJNTNS) is a really fun one, and if you just buy the game (I never liked the wheel) it's pretty cheap. [Mario Party 8] (http://www.amazon.com/Mario-Party-8-nintendo-wii/dp/B000LSJKAM/ref=sr_1_1?s=videogames&ie=UTF8&qid=1415812236&sr=1-1&keywords=mario+party+8) is a MUST have, and is probably the best party game on the system. Huge replay value, and it's not too difficult for kids. [Super Mario Galaxy] (http://www.amazon.com/Super-Mario-Galaxy-Nintendo-Wii/dp/B000FQ9QVI/ref=sr_1_2?s=videogames&ie=UTF8&qid=1415812294&sr=1-2&keywords=super+mario+galaxy) is widely regarded as one of the best video games period. It's only 2 player, though, so it might not be best for your situation. [New Super Mario Bros. Wii] (http://www.amazon.com/New-Super-Mario-Bros-Wii-Nintendo/dp/B002BRZ9G0/ref=pd_sim_vg_4?ie=UTF8&refRID=160GWY5DR8453EPHDZFW) is a really fun game, and is great for co-op play. Wii Sports and Wii Sports Resort are VERY good games, both very versatile. They're easy to pick up, and can be played alone or with friends. Most Wiis came with Wii Sports, so you can pick it up for really cheap. Wii Party I've found is pretty popular with kids, although it's not the best party game on the system. My younger sister loves Wii Play, but I don't see how it could appeal to kids. It has 9 minigames that are all pretty different, but they're not spectacular. Just Dance is a great game to get, but a lot of kids are sometimes too embarrassed to ever play it. The Lego games are GREAT, and even though they're only two player, I think they're way to fun to leave out. They're good for kids, adults, teens, whatever. My personal favorite is the Lego Star Wars Saga, but there are plenty of other Lego games if you don't like that one. Kirby's Epic Yarn could be fun for kids, because I know Kirby is a really popular character for the younger ones. I may be wrong, but I think (?) it supports co-op mode. For the older kids, Super Smash Bros Brawl is the absolute BEST choice. My local YMCA used to have a Wii and only Super Smash Bros Brawl, and it was all that the middle/high school aged kids used to play.

With a Wii, you can also play Gamecube games. Similar to the Wii, it has Mario Kart games, Mario Party games, and Super Smash Bros. You have to buy a Gamecube controller, though, obviously.

In terms of educational games, the only one I can think of that was major for the system is Big Brain Academy: Wii Degree. I personally had a lot of fun with it, and it's challenging for older kids while still being accessible for younger ones.

In terms of accessories, I suggest nunchuks and classic controllers. Nunchuks are required for a lot of games, and classic controllers can either be used as an alternate controller or to control Wii Shop games. The Wii Shop is where you can download old games, like the original Super Mario Bros. The classic controller is required to play those games. As I mentioned before, the Motion Plus is also helpful, and required for some games, like Wii Sports Resort. It's basically just an upgrade to the Wii that is attached to the bottom. If you buy Wii Fit (which I didn't suggest, since it's pretty much one player) you will need to buy a Balance Board.

With all of the games, you're probably going to be buying used, just because new Wii games are almost always very expensive. Used games for Wii can vary from expensive to cheap, and I can't imagine you'd come very close to $950 with everything I just mentioned. So with whatever you have left, visit a Gamestop, which have extensive Wii collections, and grab whatever game catches your eye. Games like Deca Sports and 30 Great Games are fun games that I own that went under the radar.

I'd like to make a recommendation if you have a bunch of old Wii controllers collecting dust. This wireless Wii adapter for PC is under $20, and I've found it to work great for gaming on retropie. It even works with my NES (and SNES) Classic controllers for that true feel of retro gaming if you want. It even has two ports for 2-player gaming.

OP is an affiliate spammer. Clean URL: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0019SY1D4/

u/[deleted] · 4 pointsr/gaming

my shady senses are also tingling. Anyway, for $280 PLUS shipping, there's essentially no discount, since shipping's going to be at least $20. And then there are paypal fees...

Not to shit on OP's thread, but amazon's offering a ps3 for $300 plus $75 in videogame credit.

and then you can get the wii plus a wii remote plus, wii sports resort and a nunchuck for $177.

Fortune Street. It is literally Dragon Quest meets Mario Party.

u/Gr8NonSequitur · 4 pointsr/wiiu

I really enjoyed Punchout and that's a "Nintendo Select" now.

MadWorld is an underrated gem for ~ $10 and Red Steel 2 was pretty fun as is Sin and Punishment (The Original is on the virtual console as well.)

I was gonna say the same thing, but didn't because Saki's in Smash. You forgot to mention one of my favorite mechanics, which is the ability to launch rockets back at enemies with a well timed melee attack.

Star Successor is fantastic and can be bought new and relatively cheaply on amazon. In my opinion, it's better than the first. The wiimote makes aiming feel much more responsive, but even so, it's perhaps even more difficult; however, infinite continues and frequent checkpoints make it manageable (at least on easy and normal difficulties).

u/AmoDman · 2 pointsr/nintendo

Um...what? The two facts that (A) Wind Waker still looks great on televisions with minimal updating and (B) lots of people like myself never played it are the exact reasons why a Wind Waker re-release was a slam dunk idea on Nintendo's part.

If they want to do Majora's Mask, it would probably be on the 3DS where graphical expectations are lower. And Twilight Princess is easily available to Wii U owners already while Wind Waker is not.

They also weren't looking to re-make the game, but simply re-release it to make it widely available and rake in the cash while they develop new, original games that require much, much more money and manpower. The HD tweak is just an excuse to do a new print run on a newer console with minimal overhauling.

u/krunnky · 2 pointsr/wiiu

You're going to feel so silly when you read this: It can play Wii Games and Pikmin 1 and 2 were re-released as a wii game some time ago.

This Wii does not have ports.

This style should have them here.

A Wii U does not have the ports needed, and as far as I know so far, this will not support Brawl.

u/jesusfromthebible · 2 pointsr/smashbros

In the US, Pikmin 2 on the Wii is just as expensive $35+, if not more. The games aren't terribly "rare" in quantity, but they are highly valued

Pikmin 2 - Wii vs Pikmin 2 - GCN

u/VidyaDiscourse · 2 pointsr/patientgamers

Currently flipping through Amazon, Brawl is $29, Mario Kart Wii is $39, Galaxy is $44, Skyward Sword is $40, Wii Sports Resort is $34... where are you buying your games? I mean, yeah, they aren't a hard $60 anymore, but these games are old. All of these should be well under $20 by now.

u/TeddyBearYoshi · 2 pointsr/WiiUHacks

Well you can buy it here (so you get the disk and all), or you could google a Wii USB loader to run an ISO of it on vWii.

u/PunyParker826 · 2 pointsr/wii

If you enjoy that, Super Mario Galaxy 2 just got a second reprinting under the "Nintendo Selects" collection - it and several others are going for $20 now. Pretty good deal, considering that most Nintendo titles stubbornly retain their value for yeaaars.

You and I seem to have very similar tastes in video games. I really liked Muramasa: The Demon Blade on Wii. It's a 2D action RPG. If you don't think that looks interesting, Pandora's Tower is also a fantastic game.

As for something I want, I've been wanting Dragon Quest IX, I'm going on a trip to Florida soon, (8 hours on a plane from Anchorage, AK to Orlando, FL) so I could use a new DS game for the flights :P

  1. There's only one real source of handheld consoles anymore: Nintendo. No actual competition = you can monopolize longer.

  2. They don't last THAT much longer. DS era was 7 years long. The PS3 era was also 7 years long. PS1/PS2 were both 6 years long. The current cycle is in its 6th year. The 3DS, while in its 8th year now, has seen a decline in activity because of the presence of the Switch, which is a console/handheld hybrid. Just because games still come out for it doesn't mean that the device has the same support. Games still come out for the original Wii (Just Dance 2019, see https://www.amazon.com/Just-Dance-2019-Wii-Standard/dp/B07DDD9CPN).

  3. Technology is rapidly progressing, and consoles have to compete with the ever growing PC market, so they have to constantly increase their specs to stay relevant. For handhelds, their competition is mainly mobile gaming, and mobile gaming is more suited for casual gaming. There isn't a large push to get that "home console experience" on phones, so there's likewise a lack of push for handheld systems, although the Switch is essentially now offering that experience.

I have a couple of controller questions. I'm currently trying to assemble a collection of platform specific controllers to give a bit more authentic feel.

First I'm wanting to go wireless Gamecube and I currently own a trio of Wii-U Battle Pads, 2 are PDP one is Hori. I'm debating between picking up the Mayflash wireless Wii adapter or a pair of Wavebirds and a Mayflash USB adapter. Will the Battle Pads get the job done in Dolphin and if so would they be recognized properly(I'm assuming the Wavebirds will)? The former route is definitely has the financial advantage as would look much better next to my Mario and Luigi Wiimotes(provided I can ever get Win10 to connect to them).

My second question is regarding Colecovision and Intellivision controllers. A while back I stumbled on a site that offered an adapter bundle that would do Coleco, Intellivision, Atari, and a few other old controllers. Unfortunately I didn't bookmark it and haven't yet been able to find it again. I do remember the bundle was very pricey but to me seemed to be worth it. Does anyone have a clue what I might be looking for?

Notice RE4 on Wii is 9.99 with free shipping on Amazon.

I just feel like with all the deals you create, as a subscriber of gamedeals, I'm getting spammed by posts mostly about trade-in value, which isn't exactly a game deal to me because it is about selling games (even if I agree that I can't find any more appropriate subreddit). I certainly wouldn't downvote an interesting deal. I have to admit though that I didn't even know Estarland had a store and the site looked fishy to me. Like those WE BUY YOUR GOLD websites. My point of view is probably affected by the fact that steam sales and such are posted to r/gaming so they need more views to reach me, therefore i'm used to finding better deals / wider audience deals. Something like that.

Under $10: This knife is pretty amazing. Everyone should have a big knife like this so you can cut things, open packages, defend yourself, and a bunch of other stuff that you need a knife for. Plus, this knife just looks awesome! I think both of us would love it! Plus, LOOK AT THAT SALE! It is on sale for $35 off, and all the reviews are 4-5 stars that say it is an awesome knife! You must get it! (Just so you know, I do not like Pink that much, so I added the same exact knife (but in gray) to my wishlist. I linked to the pink one because that is the one you had on your wishlist, but I would prefer gray. It is actually cheaper to get the gray one for some weird reason, too. I just wanted to tell you that in case I get it. Sorry for the trouble.)

Between $10-20: Pikmin 2 seems pretty fun. I want Pikmin 3 because it seems awesome and I have never played a Pikmin game before, so I guess I want to collect all 3 of them.

Anything: This looks cool and useful at the same time. Who wouldn't love a Pikachu Pillow?

This was really fun. I liked looking through your wishlists as it was interesting and it gave me a few ideas for my own wishlist. Also, I would enjoy any of these prizes as the prize for the contest, but I really want that knife the most. I know it take the surprise away, but it is awesome and it will still be a surprise if I win! Thanks for the contest!

Damn. I knew you were going to try some mental gymnastics to not feel bad about hacking your Wii but I wasn’t expecting a full blatant lie and avoidance of the facts I just presented to you with a link.

Amazon is selling Mario Kart wii at a 39 US price tag (link: Mario Kart Wii https://www.amazon.com/dp/B001GIUWX0/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_1ER-BbMJJ34RX) No, there’s not “only 1 copy”, like the previous link reported, it even entered the Top 100 best selling games last holiday.

Now, you’re hacking games like these, which still makes Nintendo a shit ton of profit. What are you gonna do now to feel better about it?
Just give it up dude, being a hypocrite is not cute.
