Printrbot Simple 2014 3D Printer Kit, PLA Filament, 1.75mm Ubis Hot End, 4" x 4" x 4" Build Volume Printrbot http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00HLSR0O8/ref=cm_sw_r_udp_awd_83nMub124XYMY

This is the updated version of what I have but I'm not sure why it jumped in price.

You should look for one that is inexpensive, from an established company like Printrbot, and if possible built it yourself. I don't know about other printers but mine will break on occasion and it's awesome to know exactly what to fix.

The printer also has a great online community that can offer some help for getting started but for the most part I've had to figure stuff out on my own. For this reason feel free to message me problems if you end up getting one because I was stuck on a very simple problem for two days.

I wish I could provide a better link but right now it looks like most models are above $400. Personally I would shop around a lot before choosing your printer.

*Edit, finished the long bow and got the power armor mounted.

Battletech Printing Experience:

I printed the orange mechs in that picture in the last three days; Longbow is halfway done, still has most of the supports on. Grey mechas are purchased of course.

ME:

My 3D priter experience is Beginner to Intermediate. I have changed a nozzle, fixed a few clogs and updated firmware twice. I mostly do DnD Monsters and tiles, but I created a very basic version of Alphastrike to play with my son and wife that is based on Heroscape. He wanted more mechs (me too) so thats what we have been doing the last three days after work.

PRINTER:

QiDi X-One2. You can be up and prining in about 15 minutes after opening the box. You just need to snip ties, plug cords in, attach a tube and feed the plastic through. It sounds like a home ink printer (without the clickity clack), and I have it in the living room.

I bought mine from Amazon for $280; it is about the same now.

The biggest limitation with this printer is the bed size, you can print up to 5.5" (139.7mm) by 5.5" by 5.5". So if you want to go big, you need to learn to cut models up.

MATERIALS:

I use PLA plastic by Inland (free shipping to me from the Microcenter website); the cost is $15 for 1 kg and there is 330 meters in a 1kg spool.

Cost per Meter: $15 / 330 Meters = ~$.05 cents

Edit: I cut all my models in half at the torso. If you look really close to the upper leg on the Highlander, you can see where I didn't get it exactly right. I'll just take a file to it then it will look good once I paint them grey cause paint fills in the gaps. PM me if you want help cutting models in half, I use Netfabb, but I've been switching to Meshmixer recently.

*Edit: Making it clear I printed the orange mechs, grey mechs are officially purchased ones. Added Printer Settings.

FYI the CR-10s on lightning sale. Not many left.

Edit: sold out.

Now that I have a CR-10s what do? Any mods I should make my first priority? I seen the print bed heating takes time. Is that boostable with better power supply or separate power ?

u/xakh · 6 pointsr/3Dprinting

It's not, the A8 uses a keystone frame made of three interlocking pieces of acrylic, while this is made with a single plate with braces attached in the back. It's a subtle difference, but the spacing of the individual components means this unit will be incompatible with an AM8 build without additional parts, at which time you might as well just start from scratch. Given the OP is calling this an "i3 v2," I'm willing to bet this started life as a RepRapGuru i3v2, which went on sale on Amazon last year a fair number of times for under $200, and was heavily modified from there.

u/Gumblob · 6 pointsr/3Dprinting

Hi people, longtime lurker first-time commenter!

(Incoming wall of text. Just trying to be thorough!)

I'm looking to buy a new dual extrusion 3D printer; specifically one that can support soluble support materials such as HIPS or PVA. High layer resolutions are preferred (~<0.1mm) but are not absolutely necessary.

  • Budget: $1000 max; prefer staying within the $300-800 range. Amazon strongly preferred but printers sold directly from the manufacturer are okay as well.
  • Location: US
  • Pre-builts or kits are both fine. I work for my college's 3D printing lab so technical maintenance is not an issue. Although I would prefer not having to go through extensive modifications on the printer (i.e. printing new spool holders or installing a glass plate is fine, but replacing the motherboard and installing 10 new cooling fans is not).
  • The printer is for personal use. I currently own the MP Select Mini v2 and love the high detail it provides. However, a lot of parts I'm interested in printing/designing are unprintable w/o the aforementioned support material or resin-based machinery.
  • SLA/DLP/Polyjet 3D printing is not an option unfortunately. Spacing, high ventilation, and waste removal restrictions prevent me from jumping onto that fun wagon for now.
  • The printer must be Cura/Simplify3D/Slic3r compatible (basically no proprietary only software; gcode is the go to).

I've currently looked into several newer printers but can't figure out which one is likely the most reliable:

  1. BIBO Dual Extruder and Laser Engraver - $829: I don't recognize this company and I'm still not sure why there's a laser engraver in the device but I won't complain (although this does raise some flags regarding safety). It seems to check all the boxes with dual extrusion, open-source slicers, 0.05mm layer res, etc., but it is a bit pricey and uses firmware I have yet to see on a 3D printer before (if anyone can elaborate on the firmware's reliability or whether it could be flashed w/ Marlin please do!).
  2. Flashforge Dreamer - $799: Fully enclosed and working right out of the box is nice, but I know Flashforge really likes to push their Flashprint software (although reviewers state it is Simplify3D compatible so let me know if other open-source slicers work!). Product description states it can only print from 0.1-0.2mm, however.
  3. Monoprice Dual Extruder (Fully Enclosed) - $799: I am partial to the Monoprice brand simply because all my experience with their devices were always excellent. This printer comes with some nice additions such as Auto-Resume features and print monitoring. However it pretty much requires separate spool holders (unless you buy small 200g spools from their website) and recommends its proprietary slicing software. Whether or not this device supports Cura is not confirmed in what few reviews exist for this machine.
  4. FlashForge Creator Pro - $670: Another Flashforge machine which has all the same quirks as the Dreamer albeit for a slightly older model at a cheaper price. Uses buttons instead of a touch screen which is just a minor gripe. May have wiring issues according to some negative reviewers which is a big safety concern if true. Supports Simplify3D according to the product description but has no mention of Cura which makes this an iffy buy for me.
  5. QIDI TECH X-Pro - $699: A company I haven't heard much about but I know they make budgety 3D printers (relatively speaking). High layer resolution like the BIBO and has Cura support (although it provides a modified version of it with a lot of options disabled according to reviewers). Firmware is also iffy and the printer may not have the highest build quality making this likely a no-go.

These are pretty much all the printers I have found. Devices that merge two filaments into a single extruder are unpreferred as they are pretty iffy when printing with two different types of materials and need to create purge blocks really increases print time. Right now I'm learning towards the BIBO but would like to hear more about the device.

If anyone has any other recommendations or additional experience with dual extruder 3D printers let me know!

(P.S. I accidentally turned this comment into a wall of text as there was only so much information I could find on reliable, (relatively) affordable dual extrusion 3D printing. Maybe some would be willing to collaborate to make a post covering more info so others don't have to look so far!)

On a budget, there are three great choices for Mini Printing:

Anycubic Photon (not Photon S)

Elegoo Mars

Epax X1

Angus did say in his video on the Elegoo Mars that they are going to release a new version in the next few weeks. So, the current one may go even lower in price.

Check the forms here for info on each printer.

ETA: These are all DLP printers and the screens will need to be replaced every so often. Also, if you want the best quality minis, you would have to go to a true SLA. But there are no budget true SLA printers. They start with the Peopoly Moai at about $1,300.

DLP vs SLA

Your best bet is this printer on Amazon $350 and good reviews.

Trust me that this is actually a decent start.

The cheapest 'source yourself' printer I've seen yet is the SmartRap. I'll print all parts myself, but the motors, hotend, electronics, screws, rods and other bits still add up to at LEAST $250.

I wouldn't risk it and would cancel.

Okay, so I'm actually planning on doing a Crusader myself next year and I can go into some of what I plan on using. Also keep in mind that while I have done armor before, I am by no means an expert on it, I just know what my preferences are and how I plan on tackling some of the hurdles.

So lets tackle the elephant first, The Armor:

"Armored by faith, driven by duty, bound to kill the enemies of the Zakarum."

  • For materials I plan on using a combination of things as in my experience one typically isn't enough. Yes worbla is a good jumping off point, but its rather expensive for my tastes and I have heard a lot of horror stories in the past of it reforming itself when being left in peoples cars. So instead, like the addict I am, will be resorting to my normal shenanigans of ABS and Sintra with a dash of craft foam and EVA foam.
  • Both the plastics you can get at a plastic manufacturer , ABS runs around $80 for a 4'x8' sheet, and Sintra runs about $30 for the same size, you will need a power cutter for the ABS, but a box cutter should be okay for the Sintra. Craft foam is carried at most craft stores for scrapbooking, just ask and they can get you set up and its like $8 for a pack of 12-16 18"x24" sheets, and EVA foam you can get at most hardware stores or Wal-Mart but I'd recommend Harbor Freight as they have both rolls and squares, typically runs $10-$20.
  • All of the above can be molded with a heat gun, if you get one get at least a 2 heat, and I'd personally recommend this one. Just becareful and wear gloves and make sure you ventilate pretty well. Also, test it, test it, test it! Make sure to get a good feel for how the material will work with your resource.
  • Bonus note! ABS and Sintra can be heated in the oven. Use a non-stick silver pan when heating them. ABS is roughly 300 degrees for 15 min, will be flexible for about 45 seconds, so you need to act fast. Sintra goes in about 5 min at like 250 degrees (much lower heating threshold). Oven heating is really good for base shapes, base shape around an arm, or a leg or w/e, but not for detailing, use a heatgun on low for that. Also make sure that after you base-shape you smooth it out really nice or you're gonna have some warping on the sides. And since both of these are heat moldable, if you don't have glue you can stick it back in the oven and try again.
  • Bonus bonus: ABS is solid, like ridiculously solid. I've had people physically hit my armor and hurt themselves on it. I also can withstand competition level Airsoft Rifles and literally not feel a thing.
  • For small details I'm going to be investing in a 3D printer next year. Dremel has one that is supposed to have super good quality and really easy to use for $1000, so come on tax return.
  • Chain mail if you have a pair of pliars and a lot of patience you can get chainmail rings on Amazon for about $25-30 depending on the size. This does take a while so I'd recommend starting a good TV show and watching it in the background while you work.
  • Finally, make sure you pattern your pieces. To do this wrap what you want to pattern in cellophane and cover it loosely in tape, preferably something that you can use a sharpie on, and then draw out the base pattern from there. Make sure to include an extra 5-10%. I cannot stress this enough, you would not believe how many pieces I've had to remake because I didn't make them big enough the first time. Don't waste your money because of this stupid simple mistake.

Okay, onto a bit easier subject, The Cloth and Leather:

    "My faith is rewarded."

  • For the fabric you really need to decide if you want to be a little worn or like a majestic unicorn. IF you're going for worn look for a fabric that already appears as such. A good example would be some sort of cotton linen hybrid that you can wear up a bit with a box cutter (look up how to weather pants for this). If you want to be majestic and BA, look for a high sheen cotton sateen. It really all depends on what you can find in the store, also look online too, most places will either just give you a small sample or sell you them for like $1-2.
  • For your leather I'd say go for a Vinyl for solid pieces and actual leather for the quilted pieces. If you have a Tandy Leather in your area go there. They are super willing to help and if you show them pictures and tell them what you want to do they'll get you all set up. They even offer classes and have open work where an instructor will just sit there and answer questions.

My plan for my eternal Phalanx, and this can be debated, The Shield:

    "The crusade marches on!"

  • For the base I'm going to be using pink insulation foam layered upon itself. I'm doing this because it's cheap and light, and trust me, that is important. You need to carry this around all day, no reason to make your arm hate you. Also I do not care if the inside is curved in, in fact, I almost prefer it not to be.
  • After I carve/sand the outside to base shape I'll add detail where needed with either more insulation foam or craft foam.
  • Once everything is pretty coat it all in either Gesso (4-5 coats) or Paper Mache to seal the pours. Then cover it in (Plasti Dip](http://www.plastidip.com/) to seal it and give it a nice look, this will also add a bit of stability to it.
  • By far the Gesso will be the most expensive as it's about $20 for a 32 oz jar and will need about 1 jar per coat.
  • After all of that paint it, add some straps and your golden. Oh and if you want to save some materials and money dont make an arm guard for your shield arm unless you want to magnetize it as it will more than likely just be getting in the way and you will run the risk of ruining the guard anyways. My plan is to magnetize both forearms so I can use the shield in either arm btw.
  • Oh and for the shield grip (what you hold in your hand) use a gate pull. They wont move around like cloth, they're not entirely uncomfortable, and they're cheap.

Last but not least, everyone favorite, The Weapon:

"Do not hesitate to strike down your enemies. Death is their salvation from evil."

  • Dowel rods are a great base. I'd also recommend PVC, for longer weapons PVC is ideal as its lighter and thicker pieces won't bend as much as you think, but feel free to test this out.
  • Use pink insulation foam for the larger pieces like the hammer head and spear tip. Again it makes it lighter, and the lighter it is the more comfortable you'll be.
  • For things like blades and whatnot, if it's more than a foot long add an internal notch and some way of anchoring it inside of the insulation foam. This will make sure that the foam wont move around on you and you don't have a magic rotating weapon. This will also prevent them from flying of if the glue someone comes undone.
  • For the details it's back to Sintra and Craft Foam. Like these are amazing and can really add a nice pop to your weapon. Other commonly used items are foam display board.
  • Finally make sure you cover porous things in Gesoo + Plasti Dip. I've even see people use 4-way stretch spandex because they didn't want to paint. Just make sure your edges are nice and clean.

That's really all I got. Only other thing I could suggest is to take your time and start early. Some of my friends, and even me sometimes, don't start early and will run around the week before/week of freaking out because we're not done, so don't be like us. Be smart. Oh, speaking of being smart, make sure you use PPE. If you don't know if you need it ask about it. You don't want to be working with something like resin without a mask and get breathing issues in 15 years because you didn't protect yourself. And what ever you do, don't forget:

    "Kneel before Zakarum!"

i was randomly looking around for printers out of curiosity and stumbled across this on amazon, thought it looked pretty SWEET with good amazon reviews

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01CNP3CUO?psc=1

problem with most printers is they don't seem to have as robust a community as monoprice does (they seem to have a pretty hoppin facebook group and stuff) so it's harder to recommend (people don't talk about it / recommend it often, they've heard monoprice is the way to go, vicious cycle 8))

edit looked for reviews done by non amazonians, there might be a video or two on youtube but iono finding info on kits is pretty hard

Hi, Im new to owning a 3D printer but have done several different prints at my college.

  • I am currently studying computer engineering and am planning on printing stuff with micro-controllers, robotics, small electronic components, and maybe some RC projects. Anything related to that sort of stuff.
  • My budget is up to anything around $1000 ish. If i can save money tho then that would be a great perk.
  • I live in the USA
  • Im totally down to do a bit of assembling, especially if it involves saving a little $$$

I have been doing a lot of researching my self on 3d printing technologies. One of the things Ive noted is dual extrusion vs single extrusion. Also Ive heard a glass bed is very important?

Ive read that dual extrusion can be good for certain applications like printing a structure with two materials, one which is dissolvable . Ive also read that dual extruders can have a tendency to cause a print to fail as the material can cool down in the extruder not being used. This then can cause issues when that printer extruder is used again within the same print as the material on the end does not heat up again properly?

Ive looked at several good bang for the buck printers(on paper)

  • Prusa i3 MK3(with multi material upgrade????) - Why is this printer mentioned...everywhere???? whats so good about it vs other printers?
  • Flash forge 3D printer creater pro
  • QIDI technology Xpro
  • BIBO 3D??

Please give me as much info as possible. I really don't have any experience with using different printers at all, and am really open to some good internet education. So please comment away :)

It's a Creality printer, its just being sold through a company called HICTOP. I'm sure it's fine no matter where you get it from, but mine worked really well right out of the box. https://www.amazon.com/HICTOP-Creality-Printer-Filament-300x300x400mm/dp/B074QLQSQV/ref=sr_1_2_sspa?ie=UTF8&qid=1542812784&sr=8-2-spons&keywords=creality+cr-10s+hictop&psc=1

I do recommend looking into upgrading the firmware to Marlin 1.1.9 sometime down the road though so you can ensure you have thermal runaway protection enabled. It can be a little tricky at times, but this community is incredibly helpful as is r/3Dprinting and r/FixMyPrint. Good luck with the new printer! I love my CR-10S and post prints from it on Reddit from time to time.

Looking to get my first 3D printer. I know a lot about 3D printers, have a little experience using them, but have never owned my own. Definitely not an expert.

Budget: < $400

Country: USA

Prebuilt/Kit: Prefer Prebuilt, can do a kit if it doesn't require a ton of work

What: Not sure, want to experiment with somethings, try to make useful, functional prints.

Other: I need something that is enclosed, or that can be easily enclosed (I have a mischievous cat and can't put the printer in a separate room away from her). I have been looking into the QIDI X-One2 ( https://www.amazon.com/QIDI-TECHNOLOGY-New-Generation-Printer/dp/B01HZ4HY9I ), but if there's something better or that has a larger build area, that would be good to know.

Thoughts on the Qidi Tech X-Pro?

Edit: Main uses would be to create figurines/statues/dice/miniatures/busts, in house parts/mounts for electronic projects I work on and possibly even cases/buttons for handheld projects

Edit 2: This would also be my first 3D printer

I would recommend contacting amazon through amazon chat and asking for a replacement as the item is defective. They will likely have you order another and send the first back. I got mine on amazon though mine it is a hictop version. Here is the link https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B074QLQSQV/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o05_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Also I would recommend this as well as the microsd card slot on the control box isnt the greatest and is going to be alot more expensive(time or money or both) to replace than this 8 dollar cable. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01D9JIUU0/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o06_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 You will need a microsd to sd card adapter for it though. I just find handling a sd card much easier than using the micro sd.

I have been working with a ColiDo DIY 3d Printer for the last two weeks, and so far I absolutely love it. $300, 8x8x7 print bed, and pretty impressive results if you're not trying to use less common material like Ninjaflex (though you can mod it to accept flex) and are willing to spend some time experimenting with settings.

It seems to be best for PLA, as it doesn't have a heated print bed. But again, it's a fairly easy mod if you end up wanting to get into ABS.

I picked up a monoprice select mini a few weeks ago and have been consistently impressed with the print quality on DnD miniatures.

It's cheap (300 CAD for me), it'll print a huge range of filaments, and you don't have the hassle of handling SLA resin.
Edit: fixed link https://www.amazon.com/Monoprice-Select-Printer-Heated-Filament/dp/B07515FG7P?th=1&psc=1

There's a fairly active modding community too, and plenty you can do to improve print quality over stock (none of which I've even felt the need for yet)

u/mordeci00 · 2 pointsr/3Dprinting

The alexa only deals have started. "alexa order a 3d printer" will get you this printer for $237.30. It gets great reviews but someone let it slip that they offer free filament if you give it a 5 star review. Seems pretty shady but also seems like a good price. I'm not vouching for anything, just passing along the info.

OK - the 1st one lists itself as a CR-10 S5, which has a 500x600x500 build area. What is listed is the base CR-10 with a 300x300x400 build area. It's also NOT the "S" version which has lots of upgrades: mainly a filament sensor, a second motor for the z axis and has a Atmega 2560 instead of Atmega 1280 for the controller board.

The 2nd one lists itself as a base CR-10 and by all appearances seems to be one.

Seeing how a CR-10 sells for $499 on Amazon, this seems to be a good deal. You'd have to look at the eBay vendor's feedback to see if they are delivering what they advertise. It seems like the $400 price isn't out of the range of what they cost coming straight from China, but is on the low end so be careful.

Honestly, I'd strongly recommend getting the CR-10S as they upgrades, especially the board, are well worth it. They sell on Amazon for $599 https://www.amazon.com/HICTOP-Printer-Filament-Monitor-300x300x400mm/dp/B074QLQSQV and the Hictop is a solid build as far as CR10S go. You cold probably find a better deal on one from overseas.

If that price is too steep for you, and you are OK with a smaller bed size the Monoprice Select Mini is another good starter printer. For $220 you get a heck of a lot of printer: https://www.amazon.com/Monoprice-Select-Printer-Heated-Filament/dp/B01FL49VZE

There is a brand called QIDI TECH that sells printers that are basically clones of Flashforge's range.

Here is a redditors review of a QIDI TECH 1 after having the printer for 12 months. From what I have seen around the subreddit they are good machines, so if you are wanting to save a bit possibly go that route. Flashforge is a reputable brand though, either would be a good choice. The Creator Pro equivalent would be the QIDI TECH 1 or the X PRO.

u/JaqLerros · 2 pointsr/PrintedMinis

I got mine through Amazon (currently $256 US).

There are some additional costs to be aware of though.

  1. Resin (~$40): I'm using Elegoo Grey
  2. 99% IPA (~$3) For cleaning prints
  3. UV Light (~$30) for curing
  4. Gloves (~$10) It comes with some, but you'll be replacing those quickly
  5. Ventilation (~$100) depending on where you're printing.

It can add up if you're not careful. So plan for an additional $200.

I purchased the QIDI Technology X-One 2 in November 2017 and have had no issues. The only issue I had was my fault and it’s because I broke off the printer filament and had to spend time getting the broken piece out. So it was a user error. Here’s a link to the printer on Amazon and I also posted a simple outline and review of the printer here.

I went with the Up Mini, since it is about as cheap as they come and doesn't have a chipped cartridge. I refuse to pay some manufacturer's outrageous prices for refills, when options exist that let me just use any ABS filament.

Thanks!

I have a Lulzbot Mini, which runs $1250 US. Basically toward the lower end of the middle of the range for home printers. I would definitely recommend it, and any of the similar Lulzbot Taz printers. The big thing for me is that it was super straightforward to get going, and has been very reliable. I just plugged it in and literally right away was able to print cool terrain pieces for 40k. I've also been beating on it printing a ton of stuff this summer---at two different points it was running for 2 weeks almost continuously printing campaign pieces for events (LibertyHammer and NOVA)---and it hasn't needed any meaningful maintenance. It's also comparatively quick to print.

You could get a printer for much cheaper though. The M3D Micro, for example, can often be had for $200--$300 US (they run sales often, either marking down price directly or including filament, etc; list price is $500 US). I don't have personal experience with it, but the listed resolution is the same as the Mini. Big tradeoffs from the specs are that it prints slower, can't print as big of a piece, and from the factory is set up to use a less common style of filament spool that's a bit more expensive (though I assume you can rig it to use standard spools). But this is probably the one I would look at first for a very cost conscious purchase that's still useful for miniatures.

There's a couple sites around that conduct periodic reviews. I've found the Tom's Hardware Guide review very informative. They also currently recommend both the M3D and Lulzbot Mini as top purchases in their category.

There's a lot of variance in the cost of materials. Price varies by filament, who you buy it from, brand, etc.. The material I've been using is currently $25 US on Amazon for a kilogram spool. That's enough to print a lot of miniatures. On my current spool I've printed 6 tanks, 3 flyers, ~12 objective markers, and 18 shipping containers for 40k, a pile of terrain bits, and 5 Senator's Shuttles as well as a pile of these cargo pods for X-Wing, plus a bunch of testing parts, and the spool's not quite done yet.

Hope that's helpful!

u/craywolf · 2 pointsr/3Dprinting

Based on my experience, the very first time you print with it, it's going to smell absolutely devastatingly noxious, to the point that you're going to wonder how you can possibly have this thing in your house when it's running.

It's just shit from the factory burning off. With PLA, every print after the first just has a very faint plastic smell.

You will absolutely want good ventilation for that first burn-off though. Put it in a room with good airflow temporarily.

Here's the listing I bought. It comes with the glass bed and a few extra nozzles of varying sizes.

u/silentknight111 · 2 pointsr/3Dprinting

What I did may not be the "best" way to get into 3d printing, but it worked well for me.

Before the MK2 came out I was looking for a cheap Prusa clone, but had been warned about the plastic builds so I ended up getting this machine https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01CNP3CUO/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o04_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

It's a bit more expensive than the ultra cheap chinese printers, but it actually worked really well. I learned a lot building it, but I eventually decided I wanted to try something more advanced, so I started building a D-Bot.

I used this printer to print all the D-Bot pieces in PETG, and then recycled the electronics from this printer (which are good quality, and seem to be on par with what you'd order from china anyway) saving me a ton of money building the D-Bot, as the majority of the cost is electronics and extrusion. With this I mainly only had to pay for extrusion and hardware.

Kind of a round about way of getting into it, but it worked well for me :)

Actually i'm probably going to make an exoskeleton next. This hasn't been done before like the exoskeleton has (although still just prototyping except for a few models) so I thought I'd start with this.
I have also wanted a robot arm forever like this so it's fun as hell to work on!

I'm probably going to get a Printrbot Simple for starters. It'll take some calibration but that's ok. I like the idea of a kit and all that. That's part of the fun with this project anyway, learning as I go.

I would HIGHLY recommend the $350 Printrbot Simple. (http://printrbot.com/shop/printrbot-simple/) It's the one I use and have had a lot of fun with it. It's a kit, so you build it yourself. Took me 4 hours on a Saturday, and my family was floored when I showed it to them, and started printing the next day. You can print up to about 4 inches tall, wide and long. Hey there, thanks for the response!

I found the line you linked on Amazon (http://www.amazon.com/LulzBot-Mini-Desktop-3D-Printer/dp/B00S54E1AI) and also found the LuzBot TAZ 5 (http://www.amazon.com/dp/B01143UJK2).

They both look amazing!

One thing I am really aiming for is as small of a resolution as possible (layer thickness). As in, a super fine print capability (For smooth, non-grainy objects).

How would these 2 rank with other printers in the same price range ($1250 + $2200)?

Many thanks in advance!

u/a8tester · 1 pointr/3Dprinting

I bought a chinese a8 from amazon:

https://www.amazon.com/Alunar-Desktop-Printer-Accuracy-Assembly/dp/B018XJ3E02/ref=lp_13689668011_1_1?srs=13689668011&ie=UTF8&qid=1467353588&sr=8-1

This looks like the same model. It took about 8 hours to build. After several prints (about 15 total hours of printing) the power supply died - it was easily replaced for 20 dollars. The print quality is actually very good although it seems to have a problem with stringing (despite extensive tweaking). Oh, and I needed to 3d print some belt tensioners to improve the print quality.

All in all, lots of fun and surprising well-made for the price. But don't buy it unless you're willing to mess around with it.

u/Wrightboy · 1 pointr/boardgames

Haha! It's from ebay, so it's just a clone, like this one. Though I think mine is HICTOP or something? The build wasn't that bad probably 4 hours to get it built and leveled, the quality of prints I find to be superb for the cost. For slicing I primarily use cura and slic3r depending on the model. I mainly compare with other prints shown on thingiverse and as far as FDM printers go it seems to be nearly on par with printers that cost 5x as much.

Really I'd just look through my makes to get a feel for what it can do. All the black things I printed with PETG, everything else is a mix of PLA / ABS.

I would check out /r/3dprinting for more info :)

u/MNsharks9 · 1 pointr/3Dprinting

I'm looking for my first printer, something that is relatively quick to assemble, not because of inexperience with electronics, but lack of time at home with wife and kids and work.

My budget is around $400-450 USD. Primarily would be using this to be building prototypes of products for a company I'm looking to start. A majority of these prints would be likely be molded and cast.

PLA is probably going to be more than adequate for some of the parts, but for others I may want to be using ABS. One or two ideas may require flexible filament. The range of sizes may be anywhere from 1/2" square to one that might be 5-8" tall by 4-6" wide and deep, nothing massive, but I don't think a Tiny version would be best for me. (Also, I have 3 young boys, so you can bet they'll want me to be printing toys for them as well...)

I'd like a printer that can spit out prints that need very little post-processing, and can practically go from bed to mold box. For one product, it will be really hard to sand, since the clips will be really tiny.

I've been doing research, reading and watching reviews, scouring this sub and I feel overwhelmed and lost. At first, I was looking at a $200-ish printer (something like the JGAURORA), and adding some mods to bring it up to a decent level.

Then I saw the CR-10S and that looked like a winner, until I read about boycotting Creality (I know it was a firmware issue, but don't understand all the details). Yesterday I read that Creality is possibly in the good graces again? I have to admit I'm confused. I like the V-Slot construction with dual lead screws, and perhaps the ability to swap out V-slot to make it bigger, if needed (is that do-able, or would I need to purchase the larger versions to get that capability?).

After trying to wade my way through all of the choices, which seemed to almost all have something wrong with them, I thought about just biting the bullet and overspending to get the Prusa Mk3, but I don't really have that kind of cash without it becoming an issue down the line. So ideally, I'd like to keep it to sub-$500.

I'd be setting this up in my little lab in my unfinished basement. There isn't a whole lot of heat down there during the upper midwest winter months, but it's not freezing either. The summers don't heat up the basement either, so it's a relatively stable environment. I'm going in with the understanding that I'll need to build an enclosure of some sort to contain the heat, or perhaps add some more if required. IKEA to the rescue).

Can the good folks here help me out???

I This is pretty close to mine. It’s not the exact same one, but they’re all based off the same open source design. You usually have to assemble them. It takes a while, but you really get to know how it works.

Hello Everyone!

I am a Master's student studying material science and I am looking for a printer I can use for projects and to help my studies.

FAQ Questions first:
What is your price range?
~$500 or less

What do you intend to do with the printer?
General Printing of objects to assist in my studies. I would prefer a printer that is able to use multiple materials.

Are you interested in assembling a kit or would you prefer to purchase an assembled printer?
Does not matter to me. I do think a printer that adding features to would be neat to have.

Did you read this FAQ?
Yes I did.

I am looking mainly for a smaller printer as I will be keeping it in my apartment. I was looking at this Reprapguru on amazon that is on sale but know nothing about it.

General advice is much appreciated!

u/BoundlessPhoenix1 · 1 pointr/3Dprinting

I did some quick looking around for your price range, but the 2 companies I looked at were outside your price range. I’ll tell you about them

https://shop.prusa3d.com/en/printer-upgrades/183-original-prusa-i3-mk25smk3s-multi-material-2s-upgrade-kit-mmu2s.html#

This one is below your budget. I have not used this printer myself, but I have heard Prusa makes good printers.

This second one that I am suggesting is higher than your price range, however it has some perks

https://www.amazon.com/BIBO-Extruder-Engraving-Printing-removable/dp/B01LNADH8M

This printer I personally use and I LOVE IT! the quality is amazing and it prints in two colors. It comes with a dual extruder to print 2 colors vs the cheaper printers 1 extruder. The customer service is from China so there may be delay if you get any issues. But if they are working there, they get back to you in around 2-3 minutes! I am currently running into a issue with it, but the staff is currently helping me!

If you are wanting to save money, I would go with the first link, but if you want to go a bit on the expensive side go with the second link.

I would also like to add that it takes filament (basically ink for a 3d printer). I have used many brands myself and prefer the hatch box filament shown here:

https://www.amazon.com/s?k=hatchbox+pla&crid=1KZTLA5DWOJQP&sprefix=hatchbox&ref=nb_sb_ss_i_1_8

There are many kinds and colors, but go with any color you prefer but... ONLY PLA!!! The Abs is stronger but it rarely ever works.

Thanks for asking

Personally, I love my Qidi X-pro. I ended up getting 2 because of how reliable and consistent it is. It's expensive for it being a mid-tier printer, but it's a HUGE step up from the da Vinci jr 1.0.

It's got a heated bed, dual extruder, minimumal setup/maintenance and a really sturdy casing.

A real QoL feature that has really become attached to is its ethernet capability, allowing you to print much more quickly over LAN opposing to loading your file to an sd card.

The only real downside I've come across is it's kinda a hassle to navigate the frame due to it's thickness, the print area isn't big (300mmx250mmx300mm I think?) and it's not a widely known printer like a prusa, so it doesn't have a big community.

I guarantee there are a lot better printers out there for cheaper than the Qidi X-Pro, but it's one that's held the test of time for me and I've had very little to no problems for me.

Ah, yes... that is quite the dealbreaker. I'm hoping to be up, running and familiar with the use of my printer within 2-3 months of now.

So within these limitations, where would you go:

  • Not a Prusa / ships within 2 weeks (If I can get it on Amazon, even better)
  • $1000 budget
  • Suitable for gears
  • Dual extruder possible
  • Has a first-party or OEM enclosure

I'm finding that I definitely want one with an enclosure as well, which I'm not seeing for PrintrBot or Prusa options, beyond what seem to be ugly/bulky hird party or DIY options... ideally I'd like one integrated into the printer.

Is everything on this printer ready to go? Or do I need to order any upgraded parts to get it to run correctly? I know a lot of printers need a part or two to run safely and accurately (MOSFET controller, different heated bed, etc.)

Any recommendations? Also for the 500x500 is there a model that has a larger heat area (not 300x300)?

u/veive · 1 pointr/3Dprinting

Ok, the select v2 might work, but I'm really reluctant to recommend it after all of the burned boards that posted here over the last couple of months. If you do get one I highly recommend using PLA since it prints cooler and you can either avoid using the heated bed or just use it on a very low setting.

Honestly I'm probably a bit paranoid, but I'd much rather be paranoid than deal with a house fire.

Personally I'd be much more likely to go with the Select Mini and an aftermarket upgrade to the build area than to get the select v2.

If you don't want to do that check out the CoLido DIY. As near as I can tell there is no soldering involved.

The way I see it, it may be Frankenstein's monster when I'm done, but it'll be just as capable as a higher end printer (maybe a bit ambitious lol)

I got my Ender 3 Pro a month or so ago and the only upgrade I didn't end up needing was the silicone sleeve. Granted mine was through an Amazon seller.

Based off the pictures of the official Creality listing, it isn't that different.

I have used camel\^3 for years and love it although it doesn't take lightning deals into account. It also helps to point out vendors who play pricing games.

I have been watching a certain 3D printer for over a year and sometimes the prices dips to 1/2 off for a short time. I'm still trying to figure that one out and wonder if I hit it when it hits the half off point will it magically be 'out of stock'.

The printer I'm talking about is this one.

Hello everyone, I am currently in the market for my first 3D printer, and was hoping to get some advice on what printer would best fit my needs. I would like to spend no more than 300 USD max, and I live in Wisconsin in the United States. I am willing to build a printer from a kit, and I have limited electronics experience (though I am very willing to learn and my brother has a lot more experience). With the printer I would like to print a variety of things, such as pieces for props I am making, a lightsaber, probably some miniatures for DnD, and any other stupid things I can think of and design. I don’t really have any extenuating circumstances. Currently I am looking at 3 different printers, all around the same price:

I hear ya. People on this sub recommend Comgrow for their customer service. I’m pretty sure all the printers come from the same factory and I wouldn’t worry buying from Amazon. This is a decent deal.

Woot has them every so often as well. I can’t remember the exact price but I think the pro goes down to around $200. Who knows when it’ll pop up again though.

u/CommandoXFilms · 1 pointr/3Dprinting

>What is your price range?

I'd prefer around $200, but will go up to $300 as a max.
>What do you intend to do with the printer?

Small figures and plane/boat models.
>Are you interested in assembling a kit or would you prefer to purchase an assembled printer?

I'd be fine with either, but the kits seem to usually be cheaper.
>Did you read this FAQ?

Yes I did.

I haven't 3D printed before, so this'll be a first-time experience for me. I was looking for something in the $200-300 range that's reliable enough that it won't easily break down and has a decent amount of customers online who might be able to help me. I would ideally like a printer that can print smaller, finer details and has a larger printing area (7x7x7 inches or larger).

I've been looking at some printers that seem like they might be pretty good, but a lot seem like they are probably cheap knockoffs (I'm fine with a knockoff as long as it works). I'll list them here to see if anyone thinks they're good ideas, but feel free to let me know of any others.

The ones that I thought looked good were:

Anet A8, ALUNAR M505 - It says "CNC" in the name... Does that mean it's subractive? I might not like it if it is.

Some others:

MicroMake C1, HICTOP 1 or HICTOP 2 (I can't find specific printer names), Wanhau Duplicator i3 V2, TEVO Tarantula

I also have a coworker who said he'd sell me a da Vinci 1.0 AiO for $100, but I'm a bit wary of buying. It has a good size, but the prints I've seen online don't look too good to me, and I've read that you need to buy specific filaments that are more expensive.

u/Esoteir · 1 pointr/Vive

You can get 3D printers for pretty damn cheap now. An entry level printer is cheaper than some normal printers I've bought

u/hawkxs · 1 pointr/3Dprinting

Reasonably experienced in the realm of 3D printers (built/own a delta, in charge of makerspace Lulzbot) and have been tasked with determining the best option(s) for a local library. I would personally like to get 2 printers, they don't have to be the same, one with lower build quality/PLA only and the other a nicer one would be great. Ideally <$1000US for both [could go a little over but we need money for filament, etc.]. Would most likely need to purchase online from a reputable dealer/not eBay.

Am more than happy to build one/both from a kit, but one should be a tank and/or as idiot-proof as possible. Would like maintenance to be able to be done by an educated layperson, but major issues could be taken care of by me initially (large community would be a bonus).

Printing will be community members (read: kids with access to Thingiverse) and educational-type stuff, will probably not be constantly printing, but definitely have regular use. The low-frills printer (PLA only) would ideally be for the kids to use, low risk of breaking printer, etc; nicer printer could be used by librarians and knowledgeable patrons for more detailed/complicated prints.

Initially am thinking about the FlashForge Finder and the 8" Pegasus kit; brief look at Pegasus says there are a lot of mods that bring the price up but that are worth it, is there a detailed BOM for those and/or instructions? Am also not against purchasing a Monoprice, but would like to have a BOM/price list for the recommended mods first as well.

If I could get advice on if this is a good choice, that would also be great; librarian just went on Amazon and picked out a few with the best reviews. :P

Thanks!

Thinking about getting one of these.

But I keep seeing the Anet A8 popup and that it is unsafe. These seem pretty similar to that. Should I avoid these? I'm trying to find something around the price of these with a larger printing space.

I’m considering the Ender 3 Pro as my first printer, mostly for making toys for my daughter and small parts for things around the house. I found this on Amazon for $228 with the coupon. Is this a good deal, and if so, what supplies or upgrades or accessories are worthwhile to get started?

Alright, seeking advice here (duh, right?)...

I'd like to keep the purchase under 1k USD so strongly considering the Prusa MK3S kit, though I noticed the below options. I'd like dual extrusion, but mainly for support materials (dissolvable), but not a requirement. Does anyone have any thoughts on the other two or should I stick to the Prusa at this price point? TIA!

Flashforge

https://www.amazon.com/FlashForge-Structure-Optimized-Platform-Extruder/dp/B00I8NM6JO and subsequently ...

Qidi

u/buncle · 1 pointr/3Dprinting

I'm looking to replace an old NewMatter mod-t (RIP) with something a little more... um... functional. My budget is ~$1k (but for the right printer, I could go a little higher). Here's my ideal:

  • Dual extruder
  • Medium size print bed (at least ~150x150x200mm, but bigger the better of course)
  • Fully enclosed (and reasonably nice to look at)
  • Good range of material support (so heated bed)
  • Support for CURA, S3D + OctoPrint (plus Octolapse ideally, so either built in camera, or good mounting point for a camera)
  • Wifi support nice, but not required (if not Wifi, USB is a must)

So far, these are the printers I'm looking at. Feel free to critique selection/recommend others as appropriate:

  • Monoprice Dual Extruder
  • QIDI Large Size (But this fails on the dual extruder)
  • Flashforge Dreamer (Which I believe is more-or-less the same as the Monoprice above)
  • BIBO Dual Extruder (Which has bonus laser engraving module)

I'd still consider myself a beginner at this, so this may not be the best list, but hopefully someone can help me narrow down a selection.
u/AustinJMace · 1 pointr/3Dprinting

Understandable- I'll be interested to hear what you have to say about it once it arrives. I think I decided the next logical step up for me will be the Flashforge Dreamer. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00JRBQJ6W/ref=s9_simh_gw_p328_d0_i2?pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_s=center-2&pf_rd_r=1Q1XKYG5BC1T426JPYNS&pf_rd_t=101&pf_rd_p=1688200382&pf_rd_i=507846

I can't find many reviews out there for it, but what I have been able to find has been nothing but positive remarks.

u/s-teve · 1 pointr/ender3

I had the same question when looking. I decided the only different would be support. I am not one to use support so I shopped price. I tend to believe if it works out of the box it is OK if not then Amazon will take it back. I bought this https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07JJNX135/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o03_s01?ie=UTF8&psc=1

It was package like all the Creality Youtube Video, all the instruction were from Creality.
I could not be happier will this printer.

u/fadelio · 0 pointsr/3Dprinting

I have a monoprice select mini v2 and it's ok, but seems to have a lot of inconsistent prints with nylon. PLA works great, but I'm more interested in nylon.

I'm still in the return window and wondering if the qidi x-1 2 is worth getting because it has an enclosed print area which is better for nylon (and abs).

The price difference is $140 and here's the printer
