edit 2: Wow, reddit gold? Thank you, this is a first time for me. I feel a bit embarrassed that it's just a shopping link, but thank you none the less.

My cat was obsessed with playing in her water until I got her a water fountain and it solved the problem. Turns out the "pawing" wasn't so much for fun as it was to "stir" the water to make it more appetizing. Would highly recommend!

I have this one

u/zaphodbeebIebrox · 145 pointsr/Catswhoyell

Not OP, but we have the PetSafe Smart Feed. Our little boy used to stomp across our bodies at 6 in the morning every day until we woke up and fed him. Getting the automatic feeder completely changed that and the only time he wakes us up anymore is by accident when he’s trying to snuggle up with us.

I love this one, but for 95% of people the price and feature set doesn’t really make any sense. Just search for automatic feeder and you’ll find a lot of options.

For those of you who don't want to DIY: http://www.amazon.com/Pioneer-Pet-Raindrop-Drinking-Fountain/dp/B005LVJM4I/ref=sr_1_17?s=pet-supplies&ie=UTF8&qid=1454175913&sr=1-17&keywords=cat+fountain

Easy to clean, has optional carbon filter, cat loves it, although it took him 2 weeks to start drinking directly from the fountain and not the bowl part.

u/InsertWittyNameRHere · 47 pointsr/gifs

Is there not an issue that the water may get stale sitting around for that long?

I have a flowing water fountain for them, but it can be a real pain to clean.

My cats are obsessed with the bubbles in my water fountain so I think they’d actually like using that one

u/mmdeerblood · 45 pointsr/MEOW_IRL

There's a feeder I got via Amazon, my cat is on wet food only. This feeder has 3 slots so 1 always empty and 2 meals in the others, comes with an ice pack that goes under the tray to keep wet food chilled! I feed my guy before bed and then split breakfast into 2 meals one for 3am and another for 5am so I'm not woken up :)

Edit: link to feeder

u/CaptainKate757 · 41 pointsr/AnimalsBeingJerks

Did you have a plastic one or a stainless one? We started with a plastic one and it was a total pain to clean all the time, but we switched to a stainless steel one about 3 years ago and it stays clean much longer. The bowl itself doesn't get moldy until about a month of use, and the only thing that needs regular changing is the filter itself. And I say this as someone with two cats and one medium/large dog.

Here is the one I have, just in case anyone reading this is considering a pet fountain.

u/bruyere · 33 pointsr/parrots

We sell it at the pet store where I work. It's the swan fountain by Pioneer Pet. It's available through Amazon.

The feeder that DangerDean plans on proposing to is on Amazon as well.

u/TheLawIsi · 25 pointsr/cats

my cats did this and i got automated timed feeder to go off at 5 am (when they wanted food) and now they associate the feeder as "the hand who feeds" the first week of having it it was THROWN across the room by my cat trying to open it to get the food out. It works SO well. Programming it was a little annoying but https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01AUYLVU8/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o06_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 something like this.

This is pretty much it. The reason dry food is considered bad and causes UTI's is because cats often don't drink enough water (And it's worse for male cats). That's the issue, not the food. If you feed them wet food (And some vets will even recommend adding water to wet food), the cat will generally be hydrated enough, but it's not the food per se, it's just the water.

Alternatively, make sure your cat has good, easy access to lots of clean water. Cats are so fussy about water, so a water bowl left down for a couple of days is no good - you need to put fresh water down at least once a day, ideally more. Or better yet, get a pet fountain. They're not that expensive and if your cat likes it (Again, some cats are fussy bastards...), it'll drink like it's going out of fashion.

So the Daughter took her beloved cat (she LOVES this cat) to the Roswell Cat Clinic and saw God.

This is her first solo pet, not one of the family pets (it's actually kinda cute)

She was so enamored with the Vet there and is taking his every word as if it were one of the 10 Commandments. He was really good. He spent almost 2 hours with her talking about cats and their behavior

Apparently, her cat is a "Barn Cat" because the Vet kept calling him a Barn Cat. He also said that it was a "proven fact that Red (orange) cats have the best personalities.

Because our 2 male cats are overweight lazy slobs, we now have to switch our feeding style.

They now have to "hunt for their food" and we have 6 of these little mouse feeders and the cats have to actively work to get the food to come out. Once they figure this out, we are supposed to hide the mouse in the house so the cats have to hunt for their food.

Lucy, our Mico Cat, doesn't need to do this as she is an indoor/outdoor cat and is svelt so we can still bowl feed her but we have to move her food bowl out into the garage to the boys don't take all her food.

I second this, my cat developed kidney problems because she wasn't drinking enough water (also she's weird and prefers dry food to wet, so if I gave her both she would eat all the biscuits and leave the meat... strange kitty!), but I got her one of these and she uses it regularly and has had no problems since.

My dog carries a small backpack with both my water bottle and her Gulpy water bottle. I do bait her water a bit with a bit of chicken broth. But she's pretty good about asking for water.

I don't run with her over ~77ish. I'm uncomfortable taking her out once it's above that.

u/badgaldyldyl · 7 pointsr/aww

I've had cats that have woken me up daily at 4am with incessant meowing for food. So she has this automatic feeder so she never learned to expect me to feed her. It makes me feel kind of weird to say that, but it's truly amazing. So when she wakes me up, it's just because she wants to play. Fortunately she doesn't get crazy!

u/HalfEvilHomer · 7 pointsr/SiberianCats

We use a water fountain for Thor. He i had the same problem with a bowl and now it's fine.

We also noticed he drank a whole lot more as well! We have this one....

You need one of these. They work great. It portions their food automatically and they no longer bug the shit out of you every morning for food. It's a little tricky to set up, but once you get it set up all you have to do is dump food in it once a month or so. Oh and maybe tape the lid on if you have a smart cat that knows how to open things. That cat is fat, unhealthy, and needs to be on a diet.

I have a cat, but the Pioneer Pet Big Max is nice. Way easier to clean than the Drinkwells, and they come ceramic and stainless steel which is lower on bacteria growth.

u/CaughtInDireWood · 5 pointsr/AskWomen

Try this guy.

I know it's a bit spendy, but it is perfect! My cat is super smart, wants to get into everything, is a huge mischief maker, and she can't get into this one! I have it go off at 5am (so she doesn't wake me up) and at 1pm (while I'm at work, so she doesn't go hungry). You can program it to do a feeding up to 3 times a day, and it's pretty easy to set up.

My cat will throw up if she eats more than like 2-3 Tbs of dry food at a time, and this thing has a setting where it puts about that much out (you can have it dispense more than that, though). It also make a slight whirring sound when it lets out food, so my cat can hear it and know when food is ready.

Just make sure that your dry food is large enough. The feeder uses an auger, and if your food is too small, too much will come through when it's released. I use Evo, and it fits just fine. But, Fromm is too small. I haven't tried other brands in it.

Neat! Does the water flow outside a clear tube and then back up it?

I haven't seen that in the states...my cat uses this:

https://www.amazon.com/Pioneer-Pet-Raindrop-Drinking-Fountain/dp/B005LVJM4I/ref=zg_bs_2975263011_40?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1&refRID=PADVY9PPYWAMG50QQ6S1

Cats have trouble seeing still water, from what i've read, so that's why every cat owner should have some sort of fountain. My cat would only drink from dixie cups placed in the walk-in shower (I guess he thought it was a spring).

u/noawesomenameneeded · 4 pointsr/dogs

Dogs need follow a routine, and that includes feeding at regular internals with lots of exercise. With most lab you can't just leave a bunch of food out for them. They will end up overweight like your boyfriends dog.

If they're too lazy feed the dog themselves then an automatic feeder is what I would suggest doing. They're not that expensive but will help the dog follow some sort of diet. (http://www.amazon.com/Automatic-Electronic-Programmable-Portion-Control/dp/B004SBSNB0/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1334160504&sr=8-1)

Also the food plays a big part in that too. A lot of the bulk dog food from the grocery store is like McDonald's for dogs.

u/arguewithatree · 3 pointsr/washingtondc

there are feeders that help cats slow down so they don't eat til they puke. i can vouch for this style working for my fat pukey cat. it helped her lose some weight too.

u/moishew · 3 pointsr/shiba

instead of taking waterbottle and bowl with you for the dog, you might want to check out something like this. this way if you bring a backback or something, you can just throw it in there and not have to worry about it spilling / taking out a whole bowl for the dog.

Bruce didnt drink water really at all until we got this drinking fountain for him. 4 years, We felt so bad once we saw how much he was using it! A Hurom masticating juicer I bought at auction for $15. Makes awesome juice. It's an older model, but I figured I would keep it awhile and see if I used it enough to make buying a newer one worthwhile since they're like $400.

I also found a pet fountain I kept for my cats, but l knew those existed before I found it. It's a Catit Fresh and Clear and I found it brand new for $8 at Savers.

Our cat binges and throws up frequently as a result. We got him this (unfortunately, it looks like it's not available right now), and we haven't had a problem since. It took him a bit to get used to it, so we started out with no tubes, and moved up to all of the tubes (including the tall ones).

u/crick2017 · 3 pointsr/Pets

You can check here for some popular cat toys for indoor cats.

Regarding the automatic feeder, are you considering only dry food for your cat? If so it looks a decent choice. For wet food you would need to look at tray type feeder like one below:

Thank you for the info!! I don’t know what fountain it is, it was the only cute fountain picture I could find with a dog and cat drinking together. my cat loves this water fountain and it’s pretty quiet
If you ever want to try that road again I highly recommend it! Also she’s in kidney failure so my primary vet/ER vet really encourage the filtered fountain :) F crappy motors!!!

Ooh, I love this! I have 4 cats. Here's a pic of my baby girl helping me write this response.

>We're looking to adopt a young (not kitten) shorthair cat.

This is great! Adults are much harder to home than kittens. If you're not home much, consider getting two. Some shelters have BOGO deals.

>We live in a decently-sized two-bedroom apartment in the middle of a big city. Tips for apartment life?

Set aside a corner for cat bed, cat scratching post, toys, etc. Also a corner in your bathroom for the litter box. They're a bit pricier than your run-of-the-mill cat furniture, but Molly and Friends makes the best cat furniture I've ever bought. It's sturdy and well-made, i.e. it won't fall apart with 4 cats scratching on it. Do some research on where your cat may like these things placed. Putting the furniture by a window is great - it's like kitty TV. Litterbox should be somewhere quiet, private, and with a hard floor, in case of accidents.

>We have money set aside for initial supplies (litter box/scoop, carrier, bowls, and brush), the shelter donation, food/litter subscriptions from Amazon, yearly vet visits, and some emergency money. (My cat at my parents' home has epilepsy and food allergies, so I made sure this was a priority.) Am I forgetting anything?

Collar, tags, microchipping. Also neutering if it isn't already done. Check with your landlord if you have to pay pet rent and/or a pet deposit. Some landlords may even add a pet clause holding you responsible for potential pet damages.

I would also consider a pet water fountain. Cats won't drink much water of their own volition, so they're often dehydrated, and they generally don't like stagnant water. I have this one - it's actually made for big dogs, but with 4 cats, it's the right size. I refill it daily.

I also use those poop bags that dog owners use for their walks, when I scoop the litterboxes daily. It could be considered an unnecessary expense, but I don't like to use grocery bags because I like to dispose of the used litter immediately rather than throwing away a 10% filled grocery bag (wasteful!) or holding onto the bag to fill it up (gross!).

>What's your opinion on declawing? We're not that concerned about damaged furniture but neither of us has experience clipping kitty toenails.

I think there's been enough already said in this thread. If you're worried about how to do it, I'm sure your vet can demonstrate and give you tips.

>Does anyone have any experience with travelling with a cat? My partner and I live a few hours from our parents, but we'd like to visit for a week or two over Christmas and can't really leave the cat in the apartment by itself. Will travelling that distance stress the cat out? And when we get there, will the cat adjust to being in a new environment for a week? We'd bring the litterbox and stuff obviously.

Probably. We had to drive 13 hours over 2 days recently to move, and it was miserable with 4 screaming cats in the back seat. I recommend Feliway wipes, sprays, and diffusers to bring the stress down to manageable levels. However, I'm more concerned that the stress will cause the cat to act out once you reach your destination, especially meeting stranger-cats (your parents). Can you get a petsitter, friend, or a cat boarding service?

Cats are not dogs first off 😺. Please throw away the spray bottle and no more yelling! If you have access to the animal planet go app you can watch Jackson Galaxy's "My Cat From Hell". He also has many You Tube videos. It is the Best advice you can get for solving behavioral problems with cats. He also has some good books so please at least invest some time into solving your problem by watching the show or videos or reading the book or all of them. I did all of them before I adopted my first cat.

I am assuming both cats are neutered. Do they have enough space to stay away from each other when they want to? For example do you have two cat trees or at least some shelves on the wall and two different beds and so on. They may get used to each other and become best buddies or they may never get along and just each hang out in what they claim to be their part of the house.

Because you have two cats, you will need two sets of these.
Doc & Phoebe's Indoor Hunting Cat Feeder https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07HFKDJF8/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_878vCbQXB021F.
I'm sharing one of my favorite things for my cat it makes her happy in many ways and can solve a lot of behavioral problems. In nature cats eat 6 mice a day, these little feeders give them the feeling of the hunt catch kill eat cycle that is so ingrained into them. The amount they hold is about the same as if they were eating a mouse so they get small meals throughout the day as they hunt for it and throughout the night. It comes with three mice and I fill them up in the morning and hide them and then again before I go to bed. Even though my girl generally knows where they are during the day because I have a very small apartment when it comes time for her to hunt catch kill eat I have seen her actually get so engrossed that she does the butt wiggle before leaping towards the mouse.

>* 0.0437 Layer Height

Whoa. I tried that a couple of times. It's like rice paper, only way thinner. I couldn't even see the first layers, it was so transparent.

You'll definitely need to keep the temp high enough and use bone-dry filament to keep that level of detail.

Do you know about baking the moisture out and storing with dessicant?

Before storage, bake at 45-50C(~110-120F) for 2 hours for PLA. Do not exceed 55C (~135F). Oven off but oven light on for a few hours may be enough.

Get the orange indicating silica to avoid cobalt: "(1.2 LBS) Premium Orange Indicating Silica Gel Beads" https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01MQYGRVV/ and store your filament in something like "IRIS Airtight Pet Food Storage Container" https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00186O0LU/

u/tsulahmi2 · 3 pointsr/Homebrewing
  • If your LHBS has trouble stocking the ingredients you want be them extract, grain or anything else, there are many online retailers that always have fresh product in stock. Ordering crushed grain is almost always an option, but so is buying bulk sacks of grain and milling them yourself (although this will require you to purchase a mill)

  • Grain freshness all depends on how it is stored. I purchase 55lb sacks of all my base malts and store them in air-tight dog food containers. I've used year old base malts with no noticeable impact on the beer.

  • Not an expert on BIAB but from what I understand sparging is not required. It may slightly decrease your efficiency so you may want to add a little extra grain on your first few brews until you nail down all of your new system's numbers.

=) we love to help fellow kitty owners!

I have found that if you play with your kittys paws while they are very sleepy or asleep you'll have a much easier time clipping their nails as they get older. Of course, I always recommend nail grinding over clipping because its smoother, lasts longer and it tickles vs pinches however, shes a baby and that will take some training!

get lots of toys! and play with her often. remember, just like your puppies need walk and play time, she does too! you can even train a cat to talk on a leash so you can take her with you on your walks with the dogs.

i have found my cat likes moving water and will absolutely NOT drink water from a bowl or anything thats sitting still. I use this fountain instead. Makes for happy kitty. hydration is very important!

as others have said, scratching posts are important. don't forget your flea, tick, and heartworm medications. Also, kitties should be brushed. My cat is scared of brushes so I use this which he adores and gets very excited when he sees it.

dogs like to eat cat poop for whatever unexplainable reason. please do yourself a favor and invest in a closed litter box sorta like this. its worth it!!

^some pics of my set up so you can see how I increased the capacity.

Basically just added a tube between two points and as the fountain lowers in levels so does the tub.

Bonus pic of buns at end

*Tips

Needs to have a an enclosure so buns cant chew wires

Sand around the drilled openings so the glue sticks better

Use silicone glue as it is water proof and food safe

Use rubber grommets on the openings makes for a better seal

Use a bigger tube then I did because it take forever for the water to redistribute

I have valves on mine so I can disconnect the system so the parts can be washed.

Put the powerstrip(if used) on top of the water container so if you have a leak you dont electrocute yourself, your buns, or your house

Make sure you have the right parts before you start. (Bought a drill bit that doesnt work with my drill, and couldn't find grommets the size I needed for the size of the hole I drilled, I made it work though)

Test for leaks before you fill with water (put the tube under duress or itll pull out as your filling with water)

Make sure you know how to use the tools properly so you dont hurt yourself

Have fun haha

How old is she? General rule of thumb is that they're 50% of their weight at 4 months, and 80% of their adult size at 6 months. Keefer never grew into her ears, so maybe you've got hope!

I use this with K and it works great. If you're wetting her vest already...hot hot is it were you are? Does where you are know it's FEBRUARY?!

They have a stainless steel one also but I read the ceramic is easier to keep clean. I believe there's a larger one for dogs as well (or a larger number of cats) but for my two this size was plenty. Be aware there's a little bit of maintenance involved, replacement filters and cleaning, but I do think it's worth it. My kitties seem to drink lots more since I got it.

u/091973 · 2 pointsr/dogs

How airtight is that tin can, and how long is the food normally stored? Since you're washing it regularly, I'm less worried about contamination and fatty deposits and more worried about air seeping in.

If it's <4 weeks, I think you're good. More than that and I'd look for something with a tight seal. My dog takes ~8 weeks to finish her bag of food, so I keep it in the original bag in an airtight container to keep it fresh.

u/nesfor · 2 pointsr/CatAdvice

Thank you for your advice! She is normally on a mix of wet and dry Urinary S0 (and we always mix the wet food into more of a soup), but we can definitely give her more wet. I hadn’t thought of that.

I don’t have a pic of my sink at the moment, but the water fountains I have are the Pioneer swan fountain and the Catit flower fountain.

I recommend this fountain from Amazon:

Pioneer Drinking Fountain
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07GJMSBXZ/ref=cm_sw_em_r_mt_awdb_CrWVDbZGQ6E92

Very easy to clean, and replacement filters are affordably priced. My cats like to option to drink from the spout or the bowl.

I have also tried both Catit Fountains (Flower and Metal), and would recommend the Flower out of those two options, but it is a pain to clean and the replacement filters are more expensive than the Pioneer fountain.

I buy food in big bags, and I use this container. The food I buy is a very small kibble (each piece is like 3/8" circumfrence) and I can fit 2 30-lb bags in the 60-69 qt. You could probably fit one 40 lb bag of a larger kibble with no trouble.

Moved across state successfully w my massive DIY collection. My insight...

XL plastic art/craft supply storage containers with adjustable sectioning are your answer. Make sure you get the deep kind. Heres what I used

It was literally a godsend for storage/keeping everything organized. Worked for my packaging & container collection, tools, Minimixers, old products I created, beakers etc. IME there wasn't anything I had in my DIY hobby that was too big to fit. Stacks nicely, maximizes space in car.

I purchased 4 of them when the aqua colored one was $13 (but I see $ went up).

For my active ingredients (my babies) I took extra protection. Old prescription bottles house 1-2oz ingred vials to keep them protected from sunlight. Also have used amber color ziploc bags (used for photo film, sold on Amazon) for larger vials. Then I kept them all inside an XL airtight re-sealable storage container (the ones meant for food). Mine's meant for dogfood so it was way huge enough to fit everything. $10 for 25lb one.

My actives that required refridgeration were tricky. I eventually ended up triple-gallon-ziploc-bagging them wrapped with ice. And then got one of those Hot-Cool temp preserving bags they sell at grocery stores. 8 hours later & ice hadn't even melted.

Assuming you don't own a $1000+ overhead mixer and lab furniture, I'd say all your bases are covered. I definitely ditched extra things that I routinely replace (like my pipettes, old actives I didn't care about, labels).

Being a college student myself, I understand the need to be frugal. If you're going to be in a car, any old box or plastic storage totes you have would surely suffice. Only thing I'd say is a necessity is watching your active ingredients. Spend $ to keep them secure, otherwise you'll end up paying more $$ to replace them.

If juggling your cat's food becomes a problem and since all cats have a hunting instinct, you may want to try puzzle feeders; any type of puzzle feeder will do. I use mouse feeders Doc & Phoebe's Indoor Hunting Cat Feeder https://smile.amazon.com/dp/B07HFKDJF8/ref=cm_sw_r_other_apa_i_iEGPCbSNHKAWM When your cat figures it out, you can start to hide them in different places in the home. I keep all of my filament that I'm not using stored in one of these airtight containers: https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B00186O0LU/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o09_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

The 25 pound container in that link is big enough to hold at least eight spools of 1kg plastic from atomic filament.

Inside of the container I place one of these renewable desiccant devices: https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B000H0XFCS/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o01_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Gone through a few different fountains over the years with the same frustrations of them being a pain to clean, or the filters having multiple ways of being slotted in incorrectly, or the pump being stupidly loud.

Finally found one that's actually really simple to clean, the filters are simple slide in/out and have a single orientation slot, and the pump is really quiet with an adjustable flow rate:

http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B001NYGB8W

u/flibbertygiblet · 2 pointsr/Pets

We currently have this Cat It one and ours really like it, so do we. It's not so much a fountain, more like a bubbler? There's no stream of water, but it is constantly moving. Has filters, the whole bit. Our 5 cats drink a ton, so we really like that it holds more than most fountains, and it's super easy to clean.

We used to have this frog one and, while cute, it was a bitch. The pump was finicky(it went into super mode and poured out its entire contents on the table we had it in more than once), it was ridiculously hard to clean(some parts were even impossible to get to), and finding replacement filters was like searching for the holy grail.

u/powerdeamon · 1 pointr/Pets

We had one similar to the one in the video. After a while I found it hard to clean. There was some kind of buildup that I just couldn't get out of some of the tight spaces/corners in the fountain.

After having the same thing happen a second time and also wanting more capacity for our multiple cats we got this one and have had it for 2 + years now with no issues.

Okay, I have a few bits of advice for you.

First things first, I know it's hard to do emotionally, but you've got to stop leaving dry food out for your cats all day. I had a professor once who was a cat behaviorist and he put it like this, "People feed horses like they should feed cats, and cats like they should feed horses." Meaning that horses are grazers and should have food all day, not just at certain times of the day. On the opposing side, cats are hunters and should be fed only at certain times of day, and not have food out constantly (which should also help with weight management for your kitty darlings in general, since it's so important to keep them at a healthy weight as they get older anyway!) AND this SHOULD make your roomie's cat less interested in getting into your room-if he realizes there is no reward on the other side of the door.

ALSO-as far as your room-mate's cat goes, you're right, she shouldn't be giving him tastes. Not just for your sake and your kitties' sake, but for her own cat's sake as well. Human food can be bad for kitties for a number of reasons and it's safest just to keep him away from it. Not to mention, like you said, it teaches him bad manners.

Now here's the tough part. It may sound ridiculous but obviously you need to talk to your roomie about this situation, which is conflict and awkward and horrible to deal with, I know. I really recommend looking up and doing some reading today on how to talk to people while avoiding conflict. There's stuff all over the internet about it, and it's a bit too hard for me to explain. Basically, not only is it a good life skill to have, but obviously you want to be able to talk to her about it without her getting upset or feeling personally attacked. Because cats are like your children, and people can easily get offended when they feel their "parenting" is being criticized. So I really, really, really recommend looking up just some general communication tips so you can talk this over with her without it being awkward or confrontational.

Also, here are some things that MAY help if you mention when you're talking to her (disclaimer: I don't know her, so you may have to cherry-pick things here that you think would help convince her):
-I don't know if her cat is overweight, but I think it's important to mention that even though fat cats are adorable and wonderful and everything, it's really not in their best interests to be overweight; just as with humans. Having a healthier relationship with food will help keep him at a healthy weight and can really help him live longer, as well as save her money (him maintaining a healthy weight can really keep down diseases and other things that cost lots of money.)
-I'd suggest this cat get fed separately from his brother, and given a toy such as this one:

All of those are designed to slow a cat down while eating, while at the same time giving them the same mental stimulation that comes with play. This would make him eat slower, which is better for weight management as well as helping him to feel full and satisfied (if he ever does) and would keep him occupied enough for everyone else to finish eating before he could even think of getting to them. Not to mention it's fun for them! I don't know if you're willing to do this, but you could buy one of those options and give it to her as a gift, under the presumption that it is so he will leave his brother alone (I'm sure since they're both her children she probably doesn't like it when he bosses the brother around). It really is probably best to feed him alone, to prevent him from getting into anyone else's business and also would make life easier for your roomie, too.

Sorry about the book I just wrote.

If you're going to be out for long stretches of time every day, I would suggest not getting a kitten and instead looking for an older cat who is house trained and accustomed to being alone during the day.

As far as vacation is concerned your best bet is to find a friend/relative who will be willing to drop by your house once a day to put down food/clean litter/play with the kitty for a bit. If you are only heading off for a long weekend these things can easily be taken care of by using pet fountains, automated feeders, heck you can even get self cleaning litter trays. Any longer than that though and it's best to get someone to come round and take care of these things.

One more thing, whilst feeding you cat and providing litter may be reasonably cheap, vets bills can be INSANE. I would definitely recommend getting pet insurance.

Funny that this comes out on the day that I've been seriously researching cat fountains! (Seriously, I've spent maybe three hours on this the past two days...)

I've been looking at this one on Amazon, because it has the most reviews and isn't as large as the Catit. I'm a big fan of the removable-flower-model, though, which is probably why this other one has made my list, too. I am mostly worried about the reviews -- how much should I trust them?

My biggest worry though is that I'll buy a $30 cat fountain and have it burn out and have to replace it yearly, or I'll buy an $80 cat fountain and meet the same thing. My parents' cats have a fountain, but it's just too large and gets too dirty for me to want that style.

I have this one. Replaced a leaky Drinkwell.

Doesn't seem to get as icky as the Drinkwell and I don't bother using the filter. The cats go through water quick enough it stays fresh.

Only problem: it's big enough they like to play "will it float or sink" with small objects.

If you are free feeding your dog, that has to stop. Most dogs will get by on two big meals a day, and that's what the insulin is for - give the injection when the dog is eating, or shortly thereafter.

You can also ask your vet if you can give your dog tiny portions several times a day (like a human with type 2 diabetes). There are automatic feeders that can help with this. With a cursory look, I noticed this one on Amazon:

I don’t want to offend you but is your cat overweight? Most cats shouldn’t be more than 15lbs (this number will be higher for larger breeds such as a Maine coon)

To my knowledge cats don’t need to eat that much. Just because they beg for food does not mean they actually need to be fed.

I bought this one because my cat is a jackass and likes to push his water bowls around. It's ceramic, so it's heavy and he can't move it no matter how hard he tries! Ha!

Between him, a fat-ass 20-pounder, another cat who weighs about 7 pounds, and a small dog, I have to refill it about every third day, which is less often than before I had the fountain. It makes a dreadful sucking noise when it goes empty, but other than that, it's awesome--I've been thinking of it as an alarm. Super easy to put together, even looks relatively nice considering what it is. I take it apart once every other week or so and wipe down all the components and I've never had a problem getting it back together.

I too would stay away from the raw diet. Cats (especially kittens!) have very specific nutritional/vitamin needs that are better provided through cat food.

We free feed our kitten dry food and then give him a bit of wet food 2-3x a day. In terms of hydration we have a cat fountain that our kitty loves and he seems to stay well hydrated! This is the one I use: https://www.amazon.com/Pet-Fountain-Cat-Water-Dispenser/dp/B079DL32QY/ref=mp_s_a_1_15?adgrpid=64576521348&gclid=Cj0KCQjw84XtBRDWARIsAAU1aM0HcZTmkAuU8eKysHDuiUiHYZSoCruZ9hs1AH6b1YE79CzA6m22eHcaAn-MEALw_wcB&hvadid=274872094982&hvdev=m&hvlocphy=9029968&hvnetw=g&hvpos=1t1&hvqmt=e&hvrand=10434210853613776326&hvtargid=aud-647006051489%3Akwd-147515345&hydadcr=12186_10197801&keywords=cat+water+fountain&qid=1570914412&sr=8-15

I've found he drinks more with the little bubbler attachment than with the flower attachment though. Also we live in a small apartment and keep the water next to his food and it hasn't appeared to impede his drinking.

u/million_dollar_heist · 1 pointr/cats

Okay, I think your cat might be experiencing dehydration, which might account for the highly concentrated ammonia smell. Try switching to wet food. Don't do it cold turkey - start with 50% Iams ProActive Health as normal, and 50% wet food. Over 2-3 weeks, gradually reduce the dry food content to none.

Keep him on a wet food diet for at least 6-8 weeks and see if the smell gets any better. It will be normal for him to have soft poop for a couple of weeks while his system adjusts to the new food.

I would also recommend investing a few bucks in a cat drinking fountain to encourage him to drink more water. Here is a cheap one with good reviews on amazon.

actually, I have been planning on basic cabinets designed around the dimensions of my kettle and fermenters with hooks and shelves for all of the smaller accessories and accouterments.

My mill and my malt container are both on wheels, so I have been planning on leaving an open area without cabinets to keep those. I actually cover the mill with a canvas tarp when I am not using it to keep sawdust off of it.

I don't really produce too much dust; I do most of my work with hand tools, and when I am using the band saw or the table saw I hook up my shop vac to try and pull as much dust out of the air as I can. The dustiest activity I do is sanding, even when I am using my shop vac attached to the sander. I am in the process of building a downdraft table to try and minimize airborne dust from sanding, but again time is my main constraint these days.

Have you considered placing him in another room for mealtimes? That way, your other cats can eat in peace.

You may want to consider portioning his meals using a timed feeder. I own a similar one, with an ice pack built in for wet food, available on Amazon as well. You can set it to dispense food up to 5 times per day. I’ve also heard that these are good for cats that eat too fast, as they have to “hunt” for their food little by little (alternatively, you can also hide his food in small portions around whatever room he eats in, inside puzzle feeders, etc). I think the food dispenser is probably easiest. The version I linked to above is $36, but I’m sure you can find it cheaper on OfferUp or eBay.

As for fighting, Jackson Galaxy and Pam Johnson-Bennett have some great suggestions. Pam has a great reintroduction guide here. They also stress the importance of playing with your cat to get any excess energy or aggression out.

My guess for why he attacks the other cat may be some insecurity on his part about his status in the home. Do you have any cat trees, or high perches where he can sit? That may help him feel secure. Does he get to spend adequate time with you? I know it sounds silly, but some studies now show that cats view their owners in the same way that children view their parents, in contrast to dogs, who view their owners as pack leaders. Maybe your cat feels like the child who is always getting disciplined (however well-deserved it may be). In either case, reintroduction would likely be the first thing to try. It can take weeks, but it may be worth it for some peace in the home.

Another option is Feliway Multicat . It is a diffuser system (and I believe they have a spray version) designed for homes with multiple cats. The diffuser contains artificial pheromones designed to mimic the ones produced by a mother cat to calm her kittens. A friend of mine volunteers at a local shelter that utilizes these extensively to help keep the peace among their cats, and I know they’re quite popular in households with cats that don’t get along. It’s a pricey product and you may need multiple diffusers throughout your home for adequate reach, but again, you may find them cheaper elsewhere. Additionally, you can try placing them specifically where the two cats fight.

Good luck with everything. If you do choose to re-home your cat, the best thing would be to find him a loving home yourself, or at the very least, be sure you are looking at no-kill shelters (they often have waiting lists, by the way, so you’ll likely have to wait a bit - but it would save his life!) Be transparent about his issues and his need to be an only cat (in probably an adults-only home) so he can be placed where he’d be a good fit.

I hope it all works out for you and you can all live peacefully together!

I believe it depends on the cat. Some cats apparently develop some kind of acne or rash on their chin when eating and/or drinking from plastic bowls. If that's not the case for your cats then it should be fine, probably better than them not drinking enough water.
I wouldn't get the cheapest available one however because a known brand should mean that whatever plastic they say they use is the one they truly use. You may also be able to find some cheaper ceramic ones, and it is usually better than plastic, but I've only seen some over US$50

Edit: You may also want to look for stainless steel or even glass ones. For example I found a stainless steel one for US$50: https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B008HRJS24/
Or this one for about US$30: https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B016DQU5NQ/

Overall it seems that the cheaper they are the more design flaws or quality flaws there are so if you're unsure if your cats would use a fountain you could always try a cheap plastic one and later invest in a good quality stainless steel or ceramic one.
