Except all of those features are (or can be) available on microscopes because by it's very nature it's just a miniaturized photo-negative.

> Don't be all condescending thinking microfiche is all easy-peasy lemon squeezy.

I spent far too many hours of my childhood in dusty town-clerk basements and libraries helping my parents do genealogical work so I know very well how they work. There is nothing particularly "precision" about them. We're not talking about reverse-engineering a commercial-grade film-reader, just having the ability to get access to the data.

> intense magnification

Not particularly no. Typical microfiche only needs a 20-48x to get a 1:1 magnification; rarely up to 72x; and if your goal is simply to be able to read the documents far less.

Here is an X-Y base with backlight and a 75/300x Digital Microscope for less than a hundred bucks total with all of the features of a typical microfiche reader - including printing assuming you already have a printer.

My point, that you clearly have missed, is that unlike tape, or archival-grade DVD/BluRay, or praying that an HDD lasts or whatever, is that microfiche is absolutely trivial to gain access to if the underlying hardware is no longer available. I could go into my garage and come out 20 minutes later being able to read whatever was on the film. It may not be pretty but it would be functional - I can't say the same with any of the other options.

From cheapest with the least amount of features to the most expensive with the most features.

SE400 Inspection Scope
-

Cheapest Option, no zoom, but large working distance at .5x Very limited and similar to getting a 250cc bike when you need atleast 1000cc. Great to learn how to scope with, but a waste of money after a month when you could have put the money to a better unit.

---

SW-3T24Z Trinocular Stereo Microscope
-

Trinoc without simufocal so you lose depth of field when the cameras on, ( you can only see out of 2 of the 3 ports at once ) and you cannot pull the scope out, so its got limited rage.

---

SM4B Stereo Boom Scope
-

Basic Binoc scope with decent features, zoom and reach. Decent working area around 5.5 to 6 in

---

SM4TP Simufocal Stereo Boom Scope
-

Best of the best for the price, has capabilty to have cmount camera attached for 3rd viewer on a tv for training or for youtube livestreaming, ect

---

Good luck! and dont forget to buy a ring light!

"Hey, I'll tell you what. You can get a good look at a butcher's ass by sticking your head up there. But, wouldn't you rather to take his word for it?"
Just kidding, something like this could be very satisfying on a budget of about $75. I don't think you would want to go much cheaper.

u/Cinaed · 4 pointsr/biology

I'm tempted to buy one of these just for fun. I have no specific uses in mind just a curiosity for the things around me. Is there anything terrible about the $79 one that pops up any major red flags?

The main thing I'd probably use it for is to look at stuff from my aquarium.

this one looks like what I used in my bio classes at school which is kinda making me want it.

This one is a USB microscope, right to your phone just download an app, super simple. I recommend playing around with it on buds that aren't in your tent to get used to the focus dial. Took about 10 minutes total. $30 CAD

just plug it in to your windows computer and it should work under the "camera" tool. mess with the settings because its default is 2mp but can go up to 5mp which looks way better. the stand for it sucks but the image quality makes up for it.

There really isn’t much toning on this specific coin. It’s mostly what you see here in the pic. Maybe just a bit lighter overall color.

It’s the other coins of mine that I am having trouble capturing color on. Like this one. This is a pic of the same coin. The top is the store’s photo, the bottom is mine:

I am using this one.

The recommended phone apps for it suck, but it works. The included stand also sucks, but again, it works for what I need it to do. It takes maybe 5 mins to get everything stable to get a photo, but for just glancing at the buds, it's fine.

That is awesome that your gal wants to share in the hobby! I've been contemplating my own yeast ranching operation and on several times have nearly bought this microscope. Since it takes pictures and I'm lazy, it seems like it would be fairly easy to export the pictures and have a computer do the counting for you.... plus, yeast pictures would be instant karma.

And by the way, I managed to turn the display in the tablet on (for a few seconds) after the reflow, it displayed a green tinted screen and horizontal lines with battery charging icon when I plugged in the charger. Also I heard something crying in the board, but couldn't locate it. Any thoughts?

I bought this microscope from Amazon, it's $46 kinda pricey but I think it's well worth it. It makes it's own WiFi network that you can connect your phone or laptop to. It takes pretty damn good pictures.

u/anal_bifurcation · 1 pointr/tressless

I use this one, but for $20 I assume any one you buy will all be good enough to get the job done but not of supreme quality:

I had a toy microscope as a kid -- it was a fun idea but not so good since seeing truly small things well requires more budget. I'm now in a business where microscopy is critical and have some nice hardware I can use to see truly small things, but there's a lot of fun in looking at larger objects. This can be done with cheap hardware and I use an older pen-style scope like what you posted even for "serious" business-related work (https://www.amazon.com/Supereyes-Portable-Microscope-Endoscope-Magnifier/dp/B0066H7H1Q ). These come with software a lot of the time but it's maybe not very good, so I use something called "SharpCap" which is meant for astronomy but is actually just an easy program to display USB camera images in real time so it works nicely for USB camera microscopy. I'd recommend getting this kind of setup (USB camera that plugs into a computer for display) since the display will be nicer and my instinct is that 80 dollars/euros is too little for a microscope/display/storage/stage that will work to anyone's satisfaction.

I found this one on Amazon ( https://www.amazon.com/Opti-Tekscope-Microscope-Advanced-Definition-Industrial/dp/B0184CCOY0/ref=sr_1_10?keywords=usb+microscope&qid=1567129440&s=gateway&sr=8-10 ). It has LED lighting (important for illuminating objects from the top) and looks solid, with metal construction that seems nicer than the one I have. Something like this would plug into a computer and display in real time, allowing you a large working distance from the object while being steady enough to watch the screen while focusing. There are lots of them like this for sale, some with higher magnification, but I think anything like along these lines would be a great toy microscope.

The soil is filled with organisms. I usually get them from the compost pile. The trick is isolating, identifying and growing them. My microscope is this one.. Here is the link to see the specs.

If the loupes are not working for you then consider a USB microscope? This is a good branded one but you could a cheap Chinese one if you want a budget one.

I haven't seen a microscope adapter for a tablet before. The phone adapters with really well though, maybe you could either use a phone, or modify it to work with a tablet: https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B07JW9KHZ2/

These types of microscopes work great for general purpose viewing. They have a few different magnifications, and LED lights to view from the top or bottom. Plus they usually run on batteries so it's portable. https://www.amazon.com/TELMU-Microscope-Magnification-Illumination-Microscopes/dp/B07DQQKJNZ/

Finally there are these clip on lenses you can get for phones and tablets that can magnify, but not as much as a real microscope. Cheap and you might get good enough results with it. https://www.amazon.com/Camera-Fisheye-iPhone-Samsung-Smartphones/dp/B01CTZY89M/

Okay, here it is. I guess it's more than I originally remembered, but is on sale for ~200. We brought these to the USA Science and Engineering Festival back in October and they proved to be fantastically durable enduring two days of kids handling them. Like I said, we were looking at termite guts, and were able to see protists and spirochetes very well with it, but were not at high enough magnification for real bacterial observation. It can even record video of what you're seeing. We were very impressed with the quality of these low-cost microscopes.

So I'm really interested in buying a microscope as a hobby item. I've always been fascinated by biology and when I was little I had a cheap slide to focus 40x microscope that was given away to younger cousins. I've been on the verge of purchasing a new microscope for a year and a half. I'm looking at three different price brackets:

$80 (The scope this article links to.)

Cordless LED biological compound microscope offers five magnification settings: 40X-100X-250X-400X-1000X
Widefield glass optics and optical glass lens condenser provide high resolution sharp clear images
45 degree inclined 360 degree rotatable monocular head with locked-in eyepiece
Cordless LED illumination with three AA batteries and wall-power adpter/recharger included
Sturdy solid metal framework with dual side focus

$130 Here

45-degree Inclined 360-degree Rotatable Monocular Head with Four Magnification Settings 40X-100X-400X-1000X
Precise Optical Glass Lenses; All-Metal Framework and Mechanical Parts
Separate Coarse and Fine Focus and Abbe Condenser with Disc Diaphragm
Built-in Tungsten Light with GS and CE Approval
5-Year Warranty Including Parts and Labor against Manuafcturing Defects

$195 Here and here. 8 settings up to 2000x

1st link:

High quality professional optical glass elements; 45degrees;inclined 360degrees;swiveling binocular head
8 levels of magnification: 40x-80x-100x-200x-400x-800x-1000x-2000x
4 achromatic objectives DIN 4x, 10x, 40x(S), 100x(S,Oil); 2 pairs of eyepieces: WF10X and WF20X
Sliding interpupillary distance adjustment; Ocular diopter adjustable on both eyetubes; Stage upward moving lock protects objectives and slides
Variable intensity illumination; Coaxial coarse and fine focus adjustment; Focusing knobs on both sides; Stain-resistant double layer mechanical stage; NA1.25 Abbe Condenser with iris diaphragm and filters; Rack and pinion adjustment condenser

2nd link:

Binocular Sliding Head with Adjustable Ocular Diopter on Both Eyetubes
Eight Magnification Settings 40X, 80X, 100X, 200X, 400X, 800X,1000X & 2000X
Graduated X-Y Mechancal Stage and Tension Adjustable Separate Coarse & Fine Focus
Precise Ground Glass Lenses and Sturdy Metal Framework
5-Year Warranty against Manuafcturing Defects

Here's what I'd use it for:

Looking at pond scum, amoebas, blood, sperm, insect parts, pollen, etc.

The $80 scope shown is an awesome value. Is it silly to consider paying $115 more for 1000x more magnification?

Is 2000x magnification complete overkill for these applications?

How can expect the 2000x magnification to compare to the 1000x? Is oil immersion required for 2000x?

Between the two $195 scopes, which one is best? I'd really appreciate some advice on this one.

How important is the apparent lack of a fine control knob on the $80 scope?

Would it be worth it to get the $130 scope when all it adds is a fine control knob, or would it be better just to choose between the $80 and $195 scopes?

u/Rashkh · 1 pointr/photography

That's a generic product that's resold everywhere. I've never heard of the website but you can pick up the same thing on Amazon for $22 where you can also see some images taken with the thing.

u/SonderlingDelGado · 1 pointr/medical

Best bet is to get it checked by a skin specialist, if possible.

Also, what I would do is get a small ruler and photograph it semi regularly (maybe write the date on yourself as well so you have all relevant data within the image). The reason for this is to self monitor for size changes.

For best clarity, don't bring the camera right up close to yourself. Cameras have a minimum focal distance, closer and it just ends up blurry. You want crisp, clear photos so you can monitor small changes. Depending on the size, you may want to get a usb microscope to get more acurate closeups of the edges.

u/SouthWestHippie · 1 pointr/microgrowery

I used this...

u/ctesibius · 1 pointr/photography

The larger the sensor, the smaller the depth of field, and it's already a major problem at 1:1 macro level. You should probably avoid DSLRs for this reason. I would advise asking in one of the science subreddits rather than here, but in the absence of anything else I'd suggest trying
on of those very cheap USB microscopes like this as a first step. You may well throw it away, but I think that the experience would show you more about what problems you need to solve before making a big investment.

I used one of these for a while. It was relatively easy to position, set up, zoom, etc., and even has its own light source right down the barrel, so you can turn off the scope's source and get different lighting.
