They've got some cool ones on Amazon.

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01E9HP1SU/ref=cm_sw_r_sms_apa_e9GbAbR8QHWAW

I've found a few more on Etsy from time to time that are smaller, but they've been hit or miss on the quality.

  • Timbuk2 laptop messenger (it rains a lot here in Oregon)

  • Engineering Notebook to keep track of everyday stuff

  • Nalgene for hydration (helps that we have free coffee/tea/soda at work)

  • G2 0.5mm pens

  • TI-36X Pro in the event I need it

  • Tackle box with sample prep equipment (tweezers, scribes, etc)

A really nice graph paper or dotted paper notebook. Sort of like this one: https://www.amazon.com/Moleskine-Classic-Notebook-Sketching-Journaling/dp/B015NG44GG?th=1

They are really nice for problem-solving and writing pseudo-code in. I am almost never without one. Also, I always have a little passport-sized one in my back pocket at all times because you never know when you will solve a problem and need to jot it down.

It would also probably be nice to include some nice pens or pencils with a notebook. Maybe a box of Blackwing pencils, which are excellent. Or maybe one of those space pens, they are pretty nice.

The most important thing you can do is to set yourself up an environment conducive to working, where the chance of becoming distracted is as low as possible. Make it comfortable and enjoyable so that entering that environment doesn't feel punishing. Bring yourself some drinks and snacks so that you don't end up with excuses to get up and wander around, and good headphones for listening to motivating music (and drowning out environmental distractions). Wear comfortable clothes. Make sure to have plenty of pens or pencils (with plenty of lead and erasers) and a good notebook for scratchwork (even we professionals tend to work a lot of stuff out on paper). Finally, and probably most importantly, go in with some kind of plan so you don't just end up dicking around on reddit.

Sidenote: As a software engineer, I highly recommend:

  • the Five Star Flex binder
    • the covers are durable, somewhat flexible plastic
    • the edge is bound with some tough synthetic cloth like nylon
    • the rings are durable, flexible rubber that won't eat your hand
    • it's the best goddamn binder I've ever had
    • I recommend adding a stiff cardboard insert to allow you to write when you don't have a suitable writing surface, since this thing is not especially rigid.
  • decent-quality reinforced notebook paper
    • holes are reinforced for tear-resistance
  • and (optionally, but very useful) an engineer's computation pad
    • front writing/drawing area is blank
    • back side is graph-ruled and is faintly visible on the front when writing
    • this lets you draw or write on the front of the page, using the faint ruled lines as visual guides, while keeping your notes and drawings nice and legible. Very very handy for drawing legible algorithm and data structure visualizations
    • also great for math classes
    • if you get the computation pad, I'd also recommend a thin, durable straight edge and a shape-drawing tool (has drawing guides for various-sized circles, rectangles, squares, and triangles) to keep your lines and shapes nice and neat. Not especially necessary, but shitty hand-drawn shapes are one of my personal pet peeves in my notes.

Call me low class, but I use military memo books. No feathering or bleeding issues from a LAMY Safari or Vac 700 running Parker Quink. Cheap and damn durable too. Use them for years per and no damage besides the covers bending from carelessly shoving them in my pocket.

I got it on Amazon, its this:
Miquelrius Soft Bound Medium Journal, 300 Sheets/600 Graph Pages, Black https://www.amazon.com/dp/B019PVSRBI/ref=cm_sw_r_sms_c_api_2YzCybR2EZHPM

It's also available at Barns and Nobles for cheaper, but since I live far away from one the cost was the same either way.

The binding can come loose if you use it heavily, I just tossed in elmers glue into the bit and let it dry. Haven't had another issue yet. Hope this helps!

u/thatdudeyouknow · 6 pointsr/homestead

I have quite an extensive collection of yard and shop tools that I use for their specific tasks and there are several great resources on what you should have in your shop and shed on both youtube and here on reddit. The items below are things I use daily on my homestead and would suggest looking into for yours as well.

Taking from the popular EDC EveryDay Carry folks, I propose HSC, HomeStead Carry:

  • A pen, I like the Pilot G2

  • A notepad I use the Rite-in-the-Rain style I am coming to realize that my ADHD brain while quite good at remembering things, sometimes forgets to remember when I am at the Hardware Store, or Feed Store about that one item that I saw I needed last week.

  • A good pocket knife. (I don't want to get into which one, I have seen too many debates on this.)

  • A good pair of leather work gloves. Costco has this 3 pack for under 20 bucks, in store, that are great. I have only worn through one of the 6 gloves so far. If only I could stop forgetting where I put my left hand gloves.

  • I love my Klein's Linesman pliers.

  • Zip ties These items are very helpful at temporarily fixing things and come in a variety of sizes for different uses. I have at least one of these bags at all times, and try to keep several larger sizes in stock as well. I will admit to using these to put up a "temporary" wire fence while I am building my cedar fence, they have lasted for over a year. Makes for quick fence moving and it is lighter to carry 25 of these than a roll of bailing wire.

  • I also try to carry one of these multi-bit screw/nut drivers with me as it saves trips back to the shop for something you didn't know you needed.

  • While on the homestead I am usually wearing a pair of double-front carpenter pants from Carhart with a pair of suspenders to keep them up with all of the items I carry, these allow for working in all circumstances and offer good protection against scrapes and pokes.

If you're going for a composition-notebook style, I'd recommend getting one with graph-ruled paper, rather than plain lined. You can still use the horizontals to write on, but you can also use it for drawing maps, etc, without having to use separate pages.

If that appeals, you can also get something like this, where the pages are pre-numbered, and there's an included index section at the front. Or if you don't want to keep all your notes in one place (different campaigns, etc), a three-pack of Moleskine grid-ruled notebooks is pretty cheap ($13 at the Barnes & Noble where I picked mine up)

As for what to put in it, I'm with everyone else:

  • More encounter data than you plan to use, so you have extras
  • NPC names, town names, small references you make to the party that could turn into quests later (see the post from a few weeks ago about 'adventure seeds')
  • In the same vein, anything the PCs do or say that you want to come back to haunt them in the future
  • Magic items you want to give the party at some point
  • A list of person, place, and thing names, in case you have to pull one out of your ass mid-session (I got caught flat-footed and wound up having my PC's rob "Duke Who's-his-balls" one night - despite retconning a name in for him later, the Players insisted on him being "Duke Housibahls" forever)

And, for fun, litter your notes with rulebook page number references that refer to abilities, monsters, NPCs, etc that your players either really want or really don't want to encounter, just in case someone goes snooping. Only you know which ones actually matter

If you're willing to try a slightly different style of notebook, I found I prefer Rhodia's paper over Leuchtturm. Rhodia has a wirebound notebook that is larger, but at a good price. I've tried many notebooks, but keep coming back to Rhodia. I even got some coworkers onto them as well. I work in academia, so we use a lot of notebooks. Rhodia uses Clairfontaine paper, and they make notebooks as well. Something similarly sized/shaped as the Leuchtturm is their clothbound notebook.

What is your journal for exactly?

This is the journal that I use for my investments that I make I write about every little detail. Such as what im thinking and why I made purchase's/ sales. also the prices and market prices.

This is the journal I use for My websites. I carry it to my workplace every day now. If i get an idea for a blog post or recipe I want to try, then I write it down and later add details to it. Then eventually its transfered to my actual blog.

I guess what im trying to convey is that depending on the type of journal, you should perhaps bring it too your work? I am comfortable leaving mine un-attended at times. I trust my co-workers to not take it. They may have gone through it, but they wouldnt take it. Even so, they wont understand shit about my website journals becuase it doesnt state its for a website. Its just a list of random shit that pops into my mind.

Anyways... I think the answer to your question would be solved if you bring your journal to work. Perhaps take a 15 mintues break at the end of your shift and write? Of course you can do it durring, but you may not be able to depending on your workplace.

I work in kitchens, so people think my book is for recipes and I can get away with writing in it for a bit of time if im not slammed.

Hope I helped!

So long as you're not looking for perforated paper, I like the Kokuyo Campus notebooks. They're fountain pen friendly (though I've never tested them with anything larger than medium nibs), have different colors, and have a very convenient "dotted-ruled" layout.

I'm not the best artist...and when I do artistic things, I use acrylic paints, however, in order to give you first-hand advice, I did my drawing using an ink pen. [Here is it] (http://i.imgur.com/tFoet3O.jpg).

Now that I've drawn with ink, I can for sure tell you that you're going to want a fine-tip pen. Maybe [this one] (http://www.amazon.com/Sakura-Pigma-Sensei-bullet-fiber/dp/B00DUGZE7A/ref=sr_1_5?s=arts-crafts&ie=UTF8&qid=1415657750&sr=1-5&keywords=fiber-tip+pen). It has a fiber tip which is good according to my research.

I also like to keep a Moleskine notebook handy for ideas and doodles.

Oh, and based on my little foray into pen and ink, you're going to want [bleed-proof paper] (http://www.amazon.com/Paris-Paper-For-Pens-9X12/dp/B0007PC9C0/ref=sr_1_1?s=arts-crafts&ie=UTF8&qid=1415658228&sr=1-1&keywords=bleedproof+paper) for sure!

Happy drawing :)

Large as in size of paper?

  • Buy an A4 dotted notebook on Amazon. I'd recommend Scribbles That Matter, because I love their products, but Leuchtturm1917 has A4 too, as does Dingbats and Minimalism Art. If you can investigate and find out what brand she uses, just go a size up. I haven't seen bigger than A4. (B5 is between A4 and A5, and she probably uses an A5 notebook, because that's the official size).

Large in terms of number of pages? That's more difficult.

  • I though the Code and Quill Monolith was 300 pages, but I see that either I misremembered or they downsized to 216.
  • A colleague uses Miquelrius (300 pages) but the paper quality wouldn't work for someone who uses watercolor in their journal.
  • Amazon is suggesting a couple unrated notebooks to me, when I search. You may want to order ahead of time, and touch the paper and see if will work. Buy/return kinda thing?
  • Consider looking into a laboratory notebook. They work pretty well as bujos -- hardbound, hard to extract pages, usually numbered, and lots of pages.
  • Lots of people do a Travelers' Notebook instead of going up to larger number of pages. They can just use up inserts and add more.

Are supposed be good for no ghosting....120gsm on the Lemome and 100gsm on the STM (I think)

The STM will be my next/first proper dotted Journal as it has an index and numbered pages......shame the Lemome doesn't as I really like it's spine pen loop and has thicker paper and it's £6 cheaper

As others have said, I would encourage you to have practiced enough in advance so that you don't need to reference anything to answer their questions.

One thing I have done for interviews in the past is to bring a nice looking notebook (something like this). I usually have a few questions I want to ask the interviewer written down ahead of time. During the interview I may open it and jot down a note or 2 based off of their answers or things they expect of me (1 or 2 words, keep it brief as your attention should always be on the interviewer). Near the end of the interview I ask them questions from memory (or anywhere it flows naturally in the conversation). At the end of the interview they usually ask if you have any other questions for them and at this point I may quickly reference my notes to ensure I covered everything I wanted to. Again, everything should have already been covered by memory So you can thank them and head out. Afterwards I usually get contact info from a secretary if I don't have it already and send a thank you card for their time.

I think this strategy makes you look more organized and professional. I have received an offer every time I have used it. I want to stress one more time that practicing ahead of you time is the most important part of any interview though.

u/anser_penna · 3 pointsr/fountainpens

Moleskine notepads aren't as great with fountain pens. Rhodia notepads are among the best, but ink may take a little longer to dry on them (also depends on the ink you choose to use).

Black 'n Red notebooks are what I would recommend--very affordable, good looking, and they work great with most fountain pen ink.

I've heard good things about Scribbles that Matter notebooks (I'm thinking about getting one for my new journal), though those are a little on the expensive side.

The journal I'm currently using is a Minimalism Art A5. It's not the fanciest, but I think it's really good quality for less than $10. I would recommend it because I think it hits all your criteria.

It doesn't bleed as long as you're not too heavy with your markers (I've even been able to use light watercolor without any bleeding - just some slight buckling).

There is some ghosting, but again as long as you're not heavy on it with the markers or pens, it's hardly noticeable.

It comes in a range of sizes, has a bookmark, and comes in a variety of pretty colors. The only thing it doesn't have is the pen loop, but I don't think it would be hard to add one yourself if you really wanted to.

EDIT: To add more info cuz I hit submit too soon 😅

I would advise Moleskine. Extremely good quality, at a pretty decent price.

So I started a year ago (feb 2018) and I found that I was so bad at keeping at it for the first 3 months. I had to remind myself to write my tasks and stuff but eventually I got the hang of it and started enjoying writing everything in my bullet journal.

I’m on my second bujo (bullet journal) now and love it so much. I track my mood every day like this. I do weekly plans with different themes.

Some tips I have to get started is to view other examples online of bujo weekly spreads. Instagram’s #bujo and #bulletjournal is really helpful!!! To keep consistent, I just say that takes time.

For tools, I recommend you use a bullet journal that has good paper. Thicker paper is ideal so your pen or markers don’t bleed through. The Leuchtterm 1917 Dotted is a popular bullet journal and it is amazing. This Minimalism Journal is also a really inexpensive and good option. The only bad thing is that it’s a little skinnier/less wide than the leuchtterm. The paper is still great. It was my first bullet journal. I think Michaels also has a journal that is the least expensive. The one I’m using now is from Michaels—it’s a Canvas Art dotted journal (i got it as a gift, but I also have a leuchtterm for next year :)

As for pens and markers, if you’re very interested in lettering and stuff, I can give you suggestions for that. For basics, any waterproof pen is good. Sharpie pens (the no bleed ones) are waterproof and good. This is good because you can highlight them or color over them and they don’t bleed at all. Staedler’s color fine tip pens are also good but they tend to bleed/blend when colored over. Zebra Mildliners are good pastel highlighters that can double as markers too. Those are great.

Overall, you could use crayola’s basic markers and any waterproof pen/pens you have. You don’t need anything super fancy! I also recommend washi tape from michael’s. They have a 3-for-$1 deal with assorted washi tapes (don’t get the expensive packs!!!) and can be found near the front / wherever the dollar/cheap goods section is.

Whoo! That was a lot. I hope I didn’t scare you off >.<

u/-buff · 2 pointsr/fountainpens

Hi! I've been wanting to get a decent fountain pen for a while but I always get kind of scared away by all the different things (how to pick a nib, a pen, what kind of refill strategy to use, etc). I'm hoping someone can recommend me everything I need.

Here's everything I can think to mention to help:

  • I really do not like plastic. I would like a pen that reduces my plastic usage as much as possible. I do not know if there are refill options that avoid plastic, but this is actually a huge motivation for switching to fountain pens.

  • I'm just going to be using normal paper. I use Moleskine journals for personal stuff, and write class notes in the B5 notebooks from Muji.

  • I've only used black Pilot Precise V5 pens for about 15 years? And I would appreciate something similar to this, specifically in the way it writes on paper. I imagine that means a fine or extra fine nib?

  • I am not terribly concerned with having access to a thousand kinds of inks, but writing in more than blue or black might be interesting. I don't mind buying extra equipment to avoid plastic or to be cheaper in the long term.

  • I write very quickly and I want to continue to be able to write very quickly. So, an ink that dries quickly would be nice.

  • I don't want to spend a crazy amount on my first pen, but I also recognize I am probably asking for more than what a $20 pen can get me.

Thanks to anyone that can help me out!
u/pyr0paul · 2 pointsr/Pathfinder_RPG

I realy like notbookes with 5mm dotted paper. You have squares to draw maps and can you the dots as reference for things you write. Also the dots are not as distracting as lines or squares.

Something like this.

I remember looking for one a while back, and the only thing I could find was the crappy blue Moleskin that's 3.5" x 5.5".

I ended up ordering a Rhodia Webnotebook from Amazon. They're pretty nice. The pages are a little smooth for my taste but they handle pen and ink pretty well. They've also got a webbed sleeve in the back for holding misc.

The Leuchtturm 1917 is also very popular for dotted notebooks.

u/salustri · 2 pointsr/midori

If you're patient, I believe you can also find TN-like notebooks that are made such that there is no (or at least minimal) knots. I believe the "wanderings notebook" has its elastics arranged to avoid the knots.

The official website seems down now, but you can find them on amazon.

Notebooks are on sale this time of year. It's one idea I really wanted to do with one of my friends, but we couldn't get the campaign started.

I definitely second Lovecraft, me and my friends played Archam Horror and really enjoyed it. You could send them on a more personal mission to kill an innocent scholar to suck up his knowledge or research or something.

There seems to be good reviews of this TN clone here on Reddit. ZLYC Leather Travelers Notebook - no affiliation. You could then print out your own inserts if you want to go the TN route.

5x8" = A5 size, roughly. Jet Pens has the most comprehensive notebook buying guide. It and Goulet have a notebook search with the "size=A5" filter that would be a great way to see what's out there.

I got my brother a Leuchtturm 1917 and he thinks it's pretty nice. Dot grid with page numbers too. You'll hear a lot of people say it's inferior paper for fountain pens compared to the Rhodia Webnotebook, but it does absorb and dry ink quicker so when you have to close the book and go, the ink doesn't smear onto the opposite page. I personally love my webnotebook but it does take a little while before I'm comfortable flipping onto the next page. The ultimate A5 notebook is the Nanami Seven Seas Writer with 480 pages of Tomoe River paper (the fountain pen holy grail paper), but it always sells out when it comes on sale. I just checked their website and they're restocking "Late May" which could be any time in the next couple of weeks, so keep your eye out!

Edit: didn't see your college budget: Black n Red notebooks are budget- and fountain pen-friendly. They're $6-7 a pop, available in twin-wire or hardcover, so go hog wild.

1 [Something Blue](Playshoes 408566 Girl's Rain Coat Blue 5-6 Years https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B001PDN1O8/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_-CR5AbJ14TEGH). In Scotland April Showers don’t just finish in April! At all points of the year we can expect anything from a light drizzle to torrential rain!

2 Something that says summer. Watermelons totally make me think of summer, and sippy cups are perfect to keep bugs out of your drinks in the summer!

3 food related. A carrot sharpener! I saw these in a local store and couldn’t stop laughing at the thought of someone wanting a really sharp carrot.

4 a gift for someone else. My fiancé is obsessed with this album and I recently bought him a record player so I think he would love having it in this format too!

5 book suggestion. So I don’t know what types of books you are into but this is a YA Fantasy. It follows three sisters who were each born with a power. Now that they are of age, they must use their powers to kill their other sisters and become queen! It’s pretty kick ass :)

6 under $1. Okay so I’m from Scotland and I don’t know if this actually works out to be less than $1 but it is less than £1 so I hope that counts!! And they are really cute :)

7 Doggo related. My spaniel loves things like this! And I think it would work for any dog :)

8 useless but awesome. I’d love for my cats to wear this around Christmas!! Although they’d probably break it within a second haha.

9great movie The LOTRs! Great friendships, a lot of laughs and just a fab story. My all time favourite films!

10Zombie attack. I’m going to be the type of person who hides during the apocalypse and hope for the best! So I think if I find somewhere with some water nearby I could kinda camp out for a while!

11 complete goals. My main goal right now is to be more organised, and to do more creative things. I want to have fun and do more hobbies. So I think a diary where I can be creative and plan all my spare time would be great!

12 add on. WHY ARE PENS ALWAYS ADD ONS????!!!!

13 fandom. This would match my Alice tattoo! And who doesn’t need a purse :)

14 super expensive Jesus!! Who knew you could buy such expensive rings on amazon??

15 sharks or unicorns. Shark cat bed! I can only imagine how my two would react this this haha!

16 wonderful smell. I love this candle! Probably my favourite smell ever!

17 cool toy. I couldn’t find the game I always wanted as a kid, mostly because I couldn’t really remember what it was called! Although here is a Jared Funko pop that I’ve been eyeing up for months!

18 helpful for writers. I thought this was kinda cool. It gives tips on how to get out of writers block as well as mix up characters!

19 current obsession. Musicals are my currently my favourite obsession (see what I did their RHPS fans?)!

20 weird!. I’m just really not sure why these would ever be needed but at the same time I really want a pair haha!

Yep. I just finished engineering school this spring, and I've gone through my fair share of pads.

Green Paper is by far the most commonly used engineering paper. It's fairly thin, a little less than printer paper. I mostly used this paper for scratch calculations and everyday homework.

Buff is a bit thicker, but still has the same layout. I liked using this when doing hand calculations that would be included in reports or labs.

For notebooks, look for a Lab Notebook or Engineering Notebook. There are a few options out there, and it depends if you want a spiral or bound book. Computation Notebooks held up very well, and helped preserve my notes.

This is a hard one, I have a lot of ink, and I like the characteristics of a lot of my inks.. But a color that I go to a lot is Pilot Iroshizuku Murasaki-Shikibu, an amazing purple color.

As for paper, most of my inks perform very well on these notebooks you can frequently get them for around $8 for a 5 pack, $11.50 is a bit much.

u/Kilngr · 2 pointsr/ADHD

This squared Moleskine notebook is my crack. I freaking love these notebooks. They are really classy, they come in different colors (make sure the notebook is the 'squared' type) and are just a lifesaver for me in terms of documenting everything that I need/want to do. DO IT.

u/RiteInTheRain_NB · 2 pointsr/notebooks

Depending on what type of science courses you take, I'd recommend our stuff. Our paper is water-resistant, so you can spill on it without consequence. It works great with ballpoint pens, as well.

Let me know if you want a little sample book to try out.

I've also heard good things about these types of notebooks (1, 2, 3). I've tried something very similar to the Scientific Notebook Factory one and liked the feel of the paper.

u/Dejena · 2 pointsr/fountainpens

You've gotten excellent advice on inks, and some on notebooks. You mentioned being overwhelmed by the choices, but wanting a sturdy notebook that can handle fountain pen ink. There are a few choices mentioned in here, but perhaps I can help summarize this. Key thing you will want is a high gsm (Grams per Square Meter), since a high gsm means thicker paper.

  • Red and Black: 96 sheets, standard ruling, 90gsm, casebound, hardcover. Personally, no experience with this, but I've heard there's no bleed through with fountain pens.

  • Seven Seas "WRITER" A5 Journal: 240 sheets, ruling is 7mm, 52 gsm Tomoe River paper, thread-bound for binding, cover is impregnated cloth (but you can buy a leather cover). Also no experience with this either.

  • Leuchtturm1917 Medium Size Hardcover A5 Notebook: 125 sheets, ruling can be either lined/graph/dot grid, 70 gsm, thread-bound, hardcover with some sort of leather covering. I've been using these since 2013, and in my first notebook, my handwriting hasn't changed from the day I had written in it with Diamine Ancient Copper. You would still want sturdier ink than what I had used. The paper is cream colored, and smooth. Bleed through is rare.

  • Rhodia Webnotebook A5: 80 sheets, ruling can be either lined/graph/dot grid, 90 gsm, thread bound, leatherette hard cover. I've always enjoyed Rhodia paper, and while I haven't used this particular product, the paper is much smoother than the Leuchtturm1917, and there's less ghosting. The paper also appears whiter to me than the Leuchtturm1917.

  • Rhodia Goalbook A5: 112 sheets, ruling is dot grid, 90gsm, thread bound, leatherette hard cover. Throwing this in the options list, since you get a few more sheets. Also wanted to point out that the cover appears to be flexible.

  • Scribbles That Matter, Pro: 100 sheets approx, ruling is dot grid, 100gsm, thread bound, vegan leather hard cover. The sheets are smooth, and a bit brighter than the Leuchtturm1917, but a bit more ivory than the Rhodia. Great paper, and the cover feels more durable and pleasant than the L1917. With fountain pens, I have yet to bleed through this paper, and the ghosting (seeing what is written on the other side of the sheet) is very minimal. If I push you towards any notebook, it'll be this one. It also comes with a penloop that is not useless, unlike the L1917.

  • Lemome Thick Classic Notebook with Pen Loop A5: 90 sheets, ruling is either dot grid or lined, 90 sheets, 125 gsm, thread bound, leatherette cover. Just got this the other day, and the pages are thick and smooth so far. No bleed through or ghosting with fountain pen ink yet.

  • Lemome Hardcover A5 with Pen Holder: 92 sheets, ruling is dot grid, 100g, thread bound, leather hardcover. Just an option to put in here, it has a pen loop, and the paper seems to be slightly less thick than the prior Lemome notebook.

Wishing you and your daughter the best during these hard times.

I love notebooks, so forewarning - information overload incoming!

They're not knitting themed, but I like the Moleskine brand squared notebooks for my project books. The hardcover 5" x 8.25" size in particular. I get them on Amazon. Depending on which shipping method you choose, they're about $15-$16. I love that they have a pocket in the back.

I also got this one from Miquelrius because I wanted one with a shitton of pages. It's okay, but the soft cover is really thin and has curled a lot from regular humidity, so it's not very protective, and thus it lives at home on my desk rather than in a project bag.

One that I have which seems a bit gimmicky, but I actually really like is the Fashionary.
I have the Women's Sketchbook,
A4 size
. It's not something I could make my sole project book, as it's just forms to help you sketch rather than grid lined, so disregard this suggestion if you're not interested in clothing design. It has some helpful charts on measuring garments and other fashion-related info, though.

__

I organize my notebooks a lot like the project section in Ravelry - I give them a name, list yarn and needle info, make note if I'm referencing a particular book for techniques/stitches, etc. Next page or two will be any charts, followed by a bullet point, diary-style section for noting anything I feel I'll want to remember. I have a steel pencil case I keep pencils, pens, paper and binder clips, and other odds-and-ends in that goes wherever my notebook does.

u/dtwhitecp · 2 pointsr/Nexus7

After I've spent a little more time cutting and gluing, this will look perfect. I could even put some grip on the top cover such that it works as a stand.

I got a Rhodia spiral bound grid ruled notebook recently and it has nice margin/header format too. The paper is smooth (not too smooth though) and bright. Bleed through hasnt happened yet. Using medium Pilot Varsity disposable fountain pens.

u/atotalpirate · 1 pointr/calligraffiti

Good post.

Maybe a good direction to take this thread would be the what can I get a lot of for cheap? direction.

Like stack_cats said, you can get printer paper reams and be set for a while.

Sketch books for practice?

  • Blackbooks are mid priced. Cool to have $6 bucks at Walmart 192 pages. Not sure about the weight.
  • Moleskins cost just as much but are generally smaller. More marketing dollars, less materials. Can't even find out how many pages they have.
  • Office Depot Sketchbook decent weight, $8 bucks 100 pages. I got one of these cause Office Depot is right next to work and the day I decided to start doing this stuff, I just walked over there and picked up random shit. I have almost filled the whole book, font-to-back, and I like it. Little bleeding, and the wire bound spine makes it easier to write near on all of the page than a more traditional book.
  • Dickblick.com has a big list of sketchbooks that I know nothing about. Some options in here are probably better.

As far as non-sketchbook writing.. I keep boxes from ordering things online and flatten them out. That's fun. Paper grocery bags work too. A big sheet of thin plywood is like $25 bucks and you can write on that forever. I've heard water on an old chalkboard is great practice too.

Meet you halfway:

This is the de-facto standard. Single-Subject, spiral notebook. Tough. Functional. Available everywhere.

Two things I hate about spirals:

Crushed wires making it awkward to flip pages.
Lack of stiffness demands a table-top.

Ponder a not horribly expensive upgrade:

Black n' Red
Moleskine Extra Large Hardcover

No more spiral. Can write in your lap. Classier look.

Also available in graph-paper pages...

Hey,

If you're going to buy him engineering paper - which may well be a very practical present, as in my school any non-typed assignment pretty much has to be done on it - don't get Tops or Ampad. Get National brand.

Both Tops and Ampad I've had tend to come with misalignment, bad binding, and are thinner paper. National is superfantastic.

u/dandantheman · 1 pointr/EDC

Size is the main reason. I have larger notebooks for other things. In fact, for projects and the like, I use lab notebooks with sewn in pages that are already numbered, etc. (Something like this.)

I keep a small field notes notebook in my back pocket to scribble down lists or make notes of things that I need to transfer to my larger notebook if I don't happen to have that one with me.

I bought a couple of larger size Field Notes notebooks and they tend not to get used because if I'm carrying something large enough to hold them, I just carry my project notebooks instead.

u/mindheavy · 1 pointr/EngineeringStudents

For notes I buy a ream of copy/printer paper from the office supply store, they sell reams that are already 3-hole punched, it's not very much. I like having no lines interfering with anything I draw. Everything I lay down on the page really stands out against a pure white background. I suppose I take my time and write clearly, what simple sketches I do make, I take a second and do it clearly as well. The result is clean notes that are easy for me to review later.

I also write with .7mm pencil and use Staedtler pens in one or two colors to add emphasis.

All my homework gets done on National Brand engineering paper. ...Found a brand I liked and I stick to it I guess...

Each class has its own 3-ring binder and I load each one with a bit of this plain white paper, and a bit of my engineering paper.
