UPS does weight the packages. Try to ship a 40 lbs package and state 10 lbs (to pay less in shipping) and UPS won't deliver unless the shipper has paid for the right freight.

Here is the Bluetooth model

On sale for $103 not quite as big of a price jump down but I’m about to purchase these for the Bluetooth. It’s only the darker color though.

I learned the same thing about hobbies when I got into speakers. When I was first looking at speakers, the KEF LS50 ($1500 a pair normally, they're in sale right now it looks like haha) came up quite a bit, and I thought it was absolutely ridiculous that anyone would ever spend that much money on a pair of speakers!

Well, I've been into speakers for quite a while, and those speakers barely scratch the surface. They're phenomenal speakers, but plenty of people have speakers that are $10k+ and I don't think it's ridiculous now.

I was looking to get an electric bike recently, and at first I was like "why aren't there many options at around $1000 or less?" But then I remembered what happened with speakers, and it makes sense. I just wasn't aware that it was all out there, and that's a big hobby for a lot of people and it can get pretty expensive.

Now I look at pretty much everything like that. Unfortunately, my brother doesn't get it still. I was "into" watches for a bit (I've only got a few, and none of them are very expensive at all). He asked me to find him a watch that looks like x (he described it for me, I don't remember). I found him a Seiko that was $300 or so, because, knowing a lot about watches, I thought "this one is a great value for him". He saw the price tag and said "I was thinking under $100". Sorry bud, that probably won't happen for what you want.

Anyways, this is all to say, don't judge the amount of money someone's hobby costs until you really know what it's about.

Equipment:

65" Vizio M series Quantum

Hivi 3.1a DIY speaker kit finished in white spray paint. Looks decent from a distance. They sound amazing for the money and I'm a slut for ribbon tweeters.

Fireplace mount: From Monoprice makes a huge difference. The mantle is so high it's really hard to watch when the mount is swiveled up.

Here's a comparison of the mount up and down. Still working on the cable management right now, the cabinet on the right is going to hold a HTPC just have to get all that figured out.

I saw your reply below that said you're more concerned about bass than anything else... so, with that in mind:

Setup One - $1050

Amplifier: Onkyo 8140 - $210

Speakers: Klipsch RP-150M - $300

Subwoofer: Rythmik L12 - $540

So, $1050 for a setup that will get loud... very loud (Klipsch efficiency), and hit low EDM frequencies (sometimes as low as 25 hertz).

Setup Two - $610... AKA Fuck-The-Subwoofer System

Amplifier: Onkyo 8140 - $210

Speakers: BIC America RTR EV15 - $400

u/JohnBooty's review of the above speakers! Read it!

u/DeepPast can also give a glowing review.

Technically, it might not extend quite as low as the first system, but if will still hit hard, I would estimate, down to low 30 Hertz. But, unlike the top system where you have only a single 12" subwoofer, you will have not one, but two 15" woofers pulling bass duty for you. The bass and SPL levels here will still be rearranging your organs if you want them to. I think this would still satisfy your needs, and give you lots of money for beer or whatever.

u/A_Bag_Full_of_Poops · 8 pointsr/hometheater

Hello, fellow Canadian!

DO NOT BUY THIS SYSTEM. You can get a MUCH better system for $25.49 more.

Check this out:

ELAC F5 Towers - $839.98

ELAC B4 Surrounds - $269.99

ELAC C5 Center - $319.99

BIC F12 Subwoofer - $295.53 (incl. shipping)

Sub-Total: $1725.49

I would recommend just getting ELAC B5s or B6s for the front speakers and you can save a couple hundred dollars more (which I might put towards a better subwoofer or a second subwoofer).

Sorry I wrote all that without directly addressing your question, but that Polk package is bad value (even though it's on sale) and the included subwoofer is a pile of steaming shyte.

So, for pairing speakers with a receiver, pretty much anything works. Denon, Marantz, and Yamaha are the most recommended brands here.

Gibby's Electronics sells the Denon X1300 for $399.99 (b-stock) but they're out of stock. They also have the S710W for $399.99 (b-stock, I don't get the pricing), which is probably your best option unless you're willing to wait for b-stock to come in for the X1300.

Very interesting. Two affordable speaker kits with a -3dB down to ~40hz (so, there is probably audible output down into the 30s) which is deep enough to be considered full-range for most purposes.

I don't typically post DIY stuff here, despite having built about 10 DIY kits myself. BUT, these are interesting kits because they appear to require much less DIY'ing than typical DIY kits. The crossovers are already built, so I think there's no soldering required. Looks like you can just screw things in, glue the box together, and you're good to go.

Looks like there's a real minimum of DIYing actually required here... appears to be no soldering required. Just connect everything together, screw the drivers in, glue the box together, and you're good. (Or so it seems.)

3-way kit with dome midrange and ribbon tweeter (on sale for $174)

2-way kit (on sale for $124)

The guys on PE's Tech Talk forums are excited because there are a couple hundred bucks worth of drivers in each kit.

HiVi has some pretty detailed info for these and other kits on their site.

Perhaps /u/HiviSpeakers-Michael can talk more about these and/or answer questions...

u/homeboi808 · 7 pointsr/hometheater

You need a receiver to easily switch. $170 will get you a basic receiver. That leaves $330, let's call it $300 so you have room for speaker wire, subwoofer cables, etc. I assume you want a 5.1? Or do you want a better 2.1 where you can upgrade in the future?

If a 5.1:

$130 12" subwoofer (if that's too large for your space, let me know)
2x$60 Dayton B652-Airs for front/back
$30 matching center

If a 3.1:

Same subwoofer
$90 Micca MB42X
$80 matching center

If a 2.1:

Same subwoofer
$150 Klipch R-14's (could also get the $200 RB-51 II's or the BIC 350's if you don't allocate a budget for wires and cables)

u/DZCreeper · 6 pointsr/hometheater

That subwoofer is trash to be honest. Roll your own kit instead.

Dayton Audio SUB-1200 - $150.

(Rears) Micca MB42X Bookshelf Speakers - $90

If you want to drop a bit more money then go for a better subwoofer.

So looking at this I assume your total Budget is about £300. If I were you, I'd recommend trying to up that budget just a little bit, to maybe £350. It'll open up another realm of possibilities. In the £350 budget, I'll always recommend a Yamaha A-S301, as it is arguably one of the best amps in the price range. If you're really settled on either the Onkyo or the Marantz, I would easily recommend the Marantz. In my experience with those two amps, the Marantz has a slightly richer sound. I'll admit I listened to the Marantz PM6005 not the PM5005, however tonally there is no difference between the two, just a difference in power supply.

There is always however the choice of buying second hand. This is an excellent way to get higher quality equipment at a lower price. This takes me nicely to my recommendation for speakers. Really, with very little contest in the price range, the Cambridge Audio S-30's reign supreme, at least in my opinion and many others. The problem is they're discontinued, so you'll have to find them on eBay. If you really want to settle for brand new speakers though, those Polk speakers look alright. I've never heard them myself, but the reviews look good, and the massive sale right now would suggest they'd be a good grab. Other possibilities you might not have considered are the Wharfedale Diamond 220's in Black or in Rosewood. These are excellent for the price, and they look really nice too! The Dali Zensor 1's are often recommended, though I've never listened to them myself, I've heard some excellent things. My final recommendation for speakers are of course the Q Acoustics 2020i. They are remarkably good for the price, and aren't too fussy about power supplying. All of the speakers I've mentioned thus far however will be able to be powered by the Yamaha A-S301.

Those are about all the recommendations I can think of, but if you're really settled on your current speakers and between those two amps, I'd say get the Marantz.

If you have any questions just send me a reply :-)

Your case sounds designed for the NAD D3020V2. It's a two channel integrated amp, musical and warm sounding (the "NAD" sound) . Has optical input so you can connect your tv, a phono section so you can connect your turntable and a subwoofer output for if you decide to go 2.1 later.

As for speakers,

Comfortably in budget floorstanders, the Pioneers you already posted. $260

Arguably better bookshelves the Elac B6.2's on sale for $238, well under budget.

Over budget but very very pretty and nice sounding. The Wharfedale Dentons for $499

That all said, the advice to spend most of your money on speakers makes plenty of sense if you're never going to upgrade anything. Personally, I've spent a bit more on nice amplification so that I know I have what I need and that it will be adequate for any speakers I end up picking up. Also that rule is more for people spending $1000 on an amp and $3000 on a set of speakers. It doesn't translate as well to budget systems since going from $50 to $300 is like...hot garbage to very very good.

u/AndyP79 · 5 pointsr/vinyl

Get a Audio Technica LP60 or whatever the newest version is, about $100. And a pair of $100 active speakers. There is a preamp in the turntable, and the speakers will power themselves. Instant glory for $200ish. This is a decent start without breaking the bank and having decent audio.
Don't worry too much about vintage or new or upgrading this or that for now. Make sure you actual enjoy the sound of records, the cost of new records, and the hunt trying to find your favorite artists. It's not for everyone. I had a busy who got into it, 100 records later, he's back to streaming cause of the ease of use. Take it slow, learn about the hobby and enjoy what you have, not what you want.

Consider open boxes on Amazon to save a few bucks on something newer.

Audio-Technica AT-LP60X-BK Fully Automatic Belt-Drive Stereo Turntable, Black, Hi-Fidelity, Plays 33 -1/3 and 45 RPM Vinyl Records, Dust Cover, Anti-Resonance, Die-Cast Aluminum Platter https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07N3XJ66N/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_2BopDbQNCMP1J

Edifier R1280T Powered Bookshelf Speakers, 2.0 Active Monitor System (Renewed) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0741GJSJG/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_hDopDbM005QQS

Check these out. Go from there. Once you start understanding the in and out of the test of the stereo components start adding and upgrading as you come across a good deal. I would consider an actual amp next followed by passive speakers, don't hook the active speakers up to the amp, it'll sound bad and unlistenable. Then, add a cassette deck of you want plus a CD player, mini disc if you're a glutton for punishment.

Hope this helps, and gives you some pointers.
Last bit of advice..... Don't buy every dollar record at the record store/thrift shops. Look for music you actually will listen to. If your into modern stuff, look for it. If you're into classic rock, then do that. But if you're a rocker... Why would you buy some weird jazz album but some unknown that you'll listen to once only to find out it's not your style. Look up albums on online by bands you don't know and check their sound out first. It's okay to have a single jazz album or something you inherited, but save your money for stuff you like.

Cheers!

Start with a nicer 2.1 system and build on later.

The Klipsch RP-150m are MUCH better quality:

Save $100 with this larger sub:

Here's an option:

L/R: https://www.amazon.ca/Debut-Bookshelf-Speakers-Andrew-Jones/dp/B014GSEQ06/ ($332.20)

Center: https://www.amazon.ca/Debut-Center-Speaker-Andrew-Jones/dp/B014GSEQWE/ ($222)

Rears: https://www.amazon.ca/gp/offer-listing/B01DKDJRH0 ($256)

Dual Subs: https://www.amazon.ca/gp/offer-listing/B00SU63LUW/ ($1300)

Dual Subs: https://www.svsound.com/collections/dual-subwoofers#dual-1000-series ($1184.87)

About $100 over your budget, but I only sourced from Amazon.ca. You can probably get it where you need to be by shopping around. Component wise, ELAC bookshelfs are very solid for a mixture of movies and music. You could drop to one sub and free up extra money, for better speakers, but timber matching the whole set (within your budget) could become more difficult. Plus, dual subs is a real difference maker when it comes to consistent performance around the room.

u/The_Taco_Bob · 5 pointsr/hometheater

I recently purchased a town house, after renting a room for several years. Didn't have any furniture other than the bedroom essentials, so I had a pretty blank slate to work with.

I realize the layout isn't ideal, given the lighting and open floor layout (opens up to the dining room and kitchen), but I was more concerned with having a good hangout environment than having the prefect viewing experience. The only other option was an above ground basement, which would have had the same lighting issue, though better acoustics.

The lighting isn't as bad as it appears in the picture, imo. I've never really had a problem with it, though I do spend most of my time relaxing in the evenings when there is no direct sunlight coming from those windows. Even then, the Samsung seems to handle it well.

EDIT:

For the wall I used some 1/4" shaped wiremold from Home Depot. Sanded and spray painted it to match the existing 1/4" Round. For the rest of the power cables and such, I modified the middle drawer of an Ikea cabinet to hide them away and give me easy access. I'm still not quite sure what to do about the remaining outlet wires, but other than that there aren't any other visible cables.

EDIT 2:
Since I've been asked about pretty much every piece short of the coffee table, I figured I would update this post to consolidate that info. Most of these items I bought used or on sale.

Here comes the /r/hometheater special.

Denon X1400h from accessories4less.

Klipsch RP-160M because I'm biased and f'ing klipsch again.

HSU VTF-1 MK3 subwoofer. HSU makes great bang for you buck subwoofers that are actually true subwoofers. I'd usually recommend SVS, but I've only ever bought them in the outlet during special events.

They aren't even in the same category as your Bose. It's not a comparison.

u/Armsc · 5 pointsr/BudgetAudiophile
  • The T15's are unimpressive so that's not surprising.

  • If your budget is a hard $200 you're going to be limited to mainly smaller speakers. ELAC B5/6 are out.

    I would consider these.

  1. Klipsch RB-51 $200 make sure you like the sound of a horn tweeter

  2. Fluance Signature $200

  3. Polk TSx 220 $160

  4. BIC FH 65 $95 ea Make sure you like a horn tweeter

  5. Micca MB42XC $80ea That's right two center turned on their ends. You'll be surprised at the bass these can put out. It's more than the the books.

  6. Pioneer BS22 they actually do well in the lower end but suffer on the tweeter.
u/DieselWang · 5 pointsr/audiophile

For $1500 a pair, I prefer one of these:

u/ctfrommn · 4 pointsr/BudgetAudiophile

Sure. For powered ~$200 CAD any of these would work well.....

Fluance Ai40

Edifier R1700BT

Micca PB42X

Dayton MK402BT

Edifier R1850DB - slightly over budget but worth it

Edifier R1280DB

This should give you several options at many price points. All will have pluses and minuses. The Fluance Ai40's are "probably" (the R1850DB's are also very nice) the best of the group but do lack optical inputs so depending on what your TV has for outputs you may need a cheap DAC too.

u/fpsfreak · 4 pointsr/hometheater

All the suggestions made are good. I'm just giving you another perspective. Try and get a good sub. Two of the cheapest but legit subs out there are Hsu VTF1-Mk3 ($425) and svs PB-1000($419).

Get Denon X1400 for sure. That leaves you with $275 give or take.

Pick up Klipsch RP-150M for $286 from amazon.

This won't leave you any budget for a center speaker but you can get one down the road. However this setup will be far superior than anything with a Bic or Dayton sub and you will be off to a solid start for you hometheater.

u/pickapicklepipinghot · 4 pointsr/audiophile

The Q100 will be better than the OS for sure, and I imagine better than the Speedsters, but hopefully someone with more experience with DIY can chime in. If you're set on DIY, check out HiVi/Swan's new DIY 3.1 kit. Just the drivers alone retail for nearly the sale price of the kit. I bet this set will be better than the Q100, but I'll be able to say more once I build mine. Just got the box in today and it is HEAVY.

Additionally, I would stay away from making speakers out of hardwood. Wood can resonate and mess up the sound. Stick with MDF, then do a wood veneer for finishing.

u/ZeosPantera · 4 pointsr/hometheater

So $600 for the receiver and speakers and sub. You can have a sub and not turn it all the way up. Just high enough to fill in the lows.

So $400-500 on speakers and sub. If you got a Bic America F12 sub that $200 and half your budget so I would say a Dayton 10" sub-1000 for $100 is a better choice leaving $400 for speakers. So you can get some speaker stands and a pair of HTD level 3's or some Klipsch or the Big Bic-Bookshelves(Sold each).

u/N7Spectre77 · 3 pointsr/ZReviews

Klipsch RP-150M

Z gave them an outstanding review.

u/GbMaxSE · 3 pointsr/hometheater

$300 isn't a great budget for L/C/R, really. It's more than enough for something cheap, like the micca MB42x, Pioneer Andrew Jones, etc. But it's not enough for something of true quality.

The best value, and my firm recommendation for $250ish is the Sony Core Series Bookshelves at $118 a pair and the Matching Sony Core Series Center speaker for $118.

  • $325 will get you Polk S15 L/R + Polk S30 C
  • $360 will get you HTD Level 2 L/C/R
  • $370 Will get you Elac B4 with a C5 center

u/applevinegar · 3 pointsr/audiophile

Don't buy those speakers. They're absolutely terrible for the price.

If you'd like active monitors (which is a perfectly good alternative) I suggest getting a pair of Emotiva Airmotiv 6s if you're in the US.

Otherwise you'll need a receiver. In that case, if you're positive you'll be adding a subwoofer, you have two alternatives: either a multichannel amp (even if you're going to use it in stereo) that has bass management such as this or a stereo receiver like this to which you'll add an active crossover (or possibly a miniDSP) when you do get the sub.
In the first case scenario you'll have enough to for a pair of Emotiva B1s, Elac B6 or Wharfedale Diamond 220s. If you go for the Onkyo for now, you'll have a higher budget for the speakers allowing you to reach for a pair of KEF Q100s or DALI Zensor 3.

And don't buy a turntable if you don't already have a collection. Forcibly "getting LP records" is a silly hipster thing. It's an outdated medium with a multitude of inherent flaws.

u/BeardedAlbatross · 3 pointsr/BudgetAudiophile

What you can expect for x budget really depends on who you ask. I'd say for 500€ you can get a very respectable system given that you're sticking to digital and don't expect a sub that'll dig down to 20hz. BTW you can't really put together a diagram until you know exactly what components you're getting. Your diagram doesn't work for this reason. You have a DAC there but that receiver already has a DAC built in so it may be redundant. The speakers shown there also wouldn't work since they are self-powered and thus don't need an amplifier.

My knowledge and experience with European pricing is pretty limited, and almost completely exclusive to two channel setups there. Here is a realistic example of a well-rounded system with my limited knowledge of what you can get over there (AKA I wandered around the German Amazon site):

Pioneer VSX-330 at 220€

A pair of Wharfedale Diamond 220 speakers at 250€.

Some speaker wire for 15€.

Adding 300€ to your budget would benefit you sure. You can go for a better receiver maybe with better room correction and probably add a decent subwoofer. You're living in an apartment and mostly listening to metal though, so I'd say maybe a pair of tower speakers or very large bookshelf speakers would be a better direction with the extra money.

u/dangerousfoolishness · 3 pointsr/BudgetAudiophile

Alright. Here's my recommendation, then.

https://www.amazon.com/Wharfedale-Denton-Anniversary-Bookshelf-Speakers/dp/B00RDMZJ9U/ref=sr_1_sc_1?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1481516111&sr=1-1-spell&keywords=whafedale+denton

They'll probably like the old-timey look of the Wharfedale Dentons. They'll sound great with classical music. They don't need a sub.

The Yamaha has enough power to push the Wharfedale Dentons, has both Air Play and Bluetooth, and isn't very expensive.

Total is around $900. You might find a better price on the speakers. They were a hundred dollars less about a month ago.

Yes. Get a solid integrated amp and a Chromecast audio. Not sure about the Polks but the Kef Q100 is a great speaker for the money.

Is a decent amp, paired with the Kefs should sound pretty good for your budget.

These are a great deal too

u/Nixxuz · 3 pointsr/BudgetAudiophile

Spend $30 more and get some wood glue. These will sound better than any other speaker you buy new for twice what they cost. A couple clamps would be really helpful, as well as a soldering gun ($20 maybe for a cheap one), but these are what you want if you are serious about good sounding speakers.

https://www.parts-express.com/tritrix-mtm-speaker-kit-pair-with-knock-down-cabinets--300-7128

If you can't bring yourself to go DIY, I'd suggest a pair of the BIC FH-65B. One of the bigger drivers in a bookshelf speaker. about $12 over your budget, but very good for the price.

https://www.amazon.com/Bic-350-Watt-6-5IN-Bookshelf/dp/B002ISTP8K

u/Folthanos · 3 pointsr/audiophile

For desktop listening I'd recommend nearfield monitors, as they're designed for exactly that listening environment:

u/niuguy · 3 pointsr/audiophile

They are good nearfield speakers. Don't use them as surrounds. haha That's funny.

https://www.amazon.com/KEF-LS50-Mini-Monitor-Gloss/dp/B00EPDMDZ8

u/sk9592 · 3 pointsr/hometheater

You can pick up a decent AVR for about $170:

https://www.accessories4less.com/make-a-store/item/denavrs540bt/denon-avr-s540bt-5.2-ch-x-70-watts-bluetooth-a/v-receiver/1.html

Speaker Wire should be less than $10:

https://www.amazon.com/AmazonBasics-16-Gauge-Speaker-Wire-Feet/dp/B006LW0WDQ/

That leaves about $800 for your LRC and subwoofer.

My favorites in this price range are the Pioneer Andrew Jones series and the Sony SSCS series:

https://www.amazon.com/Pioneer-SP-C22-Designed-Channel-Speaker/dp/B008NCD2EI/

https://www.amazon.com/Sony-SSCS8-3-Driver-Channel-Speaker/dp/B00O8YLNRS

Now for either one, there's only a single choice for your center channel.

However, for the left and right channels, you can either go with floor stand speakers or bookshelf speakers.

Floorstanding speakers would be the ideal choice, but they are larger. If you are in an apartment where space is tight, you might need to get bookshelf speakers for left and right channels.

Which you choose will end up determining what budget range you are in for the subwoofer. So which will it be for you?

My advise is that if you are unsure right, then go with the bookshelf speakers. Because that gives you the option to change your mind in the future. If you get the bookshelf speakers right now and end up being disappointed with their performance as front channels, then you can repurpose them as the surround channels down the road and buy the floor standing speakers for the front left and right.

Fair enough.

With your budget I'd say something like this....

Receiver: Denon S540BT for $150 fro A4L

Subwoofer: Dayton Sub1500 for $198

that leaves you $120 to $150 for a pair of bookshelf speakers. Not the best budget in the world (prefer $300/pair) but for that range

Kilpsch R-15M's

Polk Audio TSi100's

If you can find them on sale the ELAC Debut 2.0's

They'll be slightly above $500 but not by much.

You may like them. They're not bad!

Having something at arms reach would be preferable to trying to use them as a wider speaker setup in a room, because of each monitor has individual power and gain controls.

Will it sound good for you, sure. Will it thump? No, not really. Is there an easy way to add a sub, sure, throwing money at it with a pro sub that has an active crossover inside it.

Best thing to do is audition them. Monitors won't sound 'bad' at all, but it just may not be what you'd expect.

I'd look into Edifiers (or Swan), for more ease of use and connectivity

I recently got the edifier pro s2000 speakers I absolutely love them. I use them for my record player and they have Bluetooth capability, they have the depth I look for in a speaker. As for something that is a little cheaper and has an insane batter life, like literally 60 hours of playback, Altec Lansing Omni Jacket ultra

u/MaximumEffortt · 2 pointsr/hometheater

You might even want to try some powered bookshelf/pc speakers. I have some edifiers that cost $400 and they are pretty impressive. Even if I spent $1000 for the pair I'd be content. No av receiver needed. They will leave you a bit lacking when it comes to very low end bass found in movies. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0725GZQFZ/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

I will say that if you get these(currently out of stock in the US on amazon) there really isn't a great way to add a sub. There are other brands that do allow for you to hook up a sub. This way you don't need an av receiver. The downsides of going this route is limited inputs and some like the edifier have proprietary wire hookups which means you really couldn't use them with an av receiver and of course price. You can probably get a better setup for $400 with separate speakers and a cheaper av receiver.

u/mox1979 · 2 pointsr/BudgetAudiophile

I just gave away my Logitech Z5500 to be used in a classroom. Years ago I'm pretty sure I paid a $400+ for the set, but I don't remember for sure. They were pretty good for a computer-oriented 5.1 setup, but as others have said not fantastic for music.

My pair of Micca MB42X speakers and SMSL SA-50 amp arrive tomorrow. I'm looking forward to hearing what the difference is, but I'm aware that setup is about twice the $80 you were looking to spend on the Logitech system.

If $80 was my budget, I'd probably be looking at something like this:https://www.amazon.com/Edifier-Powered-Bookshelf-Speakers-Monitor/dp/B0741GJSJG

But if what you want is an an inexpensive 5.1 system, then you probably won't do much better than the Z5500 for $80.

u/alefdc · 2 pointsr/BudgetAudiophile

This would be better in my opinion

https://www.amazon.com/ELAC-Debut-Bookshelf-Speakers-Black/dp/B07B4Q5588?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app

Notice that both the Polks and the Cambridge have 5 inches drivers vs 6.5 in the Elacs. This basically means better lower frequencies, and you must have bass for proper sound.
Don’t take me wrong , all of this speakers sound very nice but the larger driver will get you an extra that you will soon miss and probably get you into upgrades. Speakers are by far the most important part of your gear.

You probably need an AVR and speakers. The AVR allows you to switch inputs. It also does fancy things like room correction. Something like this:

You will need to provide more information, and if possible a picture. For example, you have not specified how high the speaker should be.

I think you can also use your bookshelves sideways without significantly altering the sound. But I cannot tell you how much it will affect the sound. In any case, there are some really good vintage speakers from the 60s and 70s that were also marketed as being used sideways. Some Wharfedales, Braun (or A/D/S) and B&Os come to mind. They will fall well within that budget, even if you buy from a dealer who also gives you warranty. There is also the option of Wharfedale Denton 80th Anniversary Edition if you'd rather have a vintage look but wish to buy new.

u/Shimakaze · 2 pointsr/audiophile

Trying to decide between two bookshelf speakers:

ELAC B5 Debut ($370 CAD)

Polk RTI A1 ($320 CAD, currently $200 on sale)

I'm planning to set up a 2.0 system in a small living room (8 feet deep) mostly for music listening, but also movies occasionally. Eventually a woofer will be added. I'm new to the speaker scene, but I understand that they're both considered to be budget level. Beyond that, I don't know if they're comparable or not. The ELAC set is the newer entry to the market by about a decade, so I imagine the tech is improved over the Polk. One thing to note is that the B5 Debut is not yet widely available in Canada. Should I spend the extra cash to get the B5 Debut?

$700 for sound?

If you are hyper conscious of space to the point of compromise, try a soundbar, but if you have room to spare and want something more serious, with $700 I say get an entry-level Denon AVR like: https://usa.denon.com/us/product/hometheater/receivers/avrs510bt (usually around $200)

And then with the remaining money get a decent subwoofer for bass: https://www.polkaudio.com/products/psw125 around $300, or get one of the smaller ones if you have a small room)

And finally with the last $200 just grab something simple like: https://www.amazon.com/Polk-Audio-Bookshelf-Speakers-Black/dp/B000V2UBS8

And then some like, 16 gauge speaker wire and whatever hdmi cables you need from monoprice.

Later on, upgrade to super fancy stuff if you find you like how this sounds.

u/Holy_City · 2 pointsr/audio

Depending on how much space you have, you might want to look into getting bookshelf speakers like these and placing them on your desk, slightly elevated. You'll also need a receiver to drive them like this which would work well.

u/Kagrenac00 · 2 pointsr/ultrawidemasterrace

what is your budget? I am a big proponent of passive speakers with a separate amp/dac. They sound the best to me. They do tend to take a lot of space though, so it may be tough with a smaller desk. If you want powered speakers though, the edifiers have been the best in my experience.

My current setup is:

AMP: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00F0H8TOC/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
(note: this amp doesnt support subwoofers, so look elsewhere if you want a 2.1 system. In my experience I haven't felt the need for one, but YMMV)

DAC: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00SY9RBOM/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o02_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Speakers: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000V2UBS8/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o03_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

I'm looking into setting up a basic system. Budget is $300 USD give or take. Primarily these are going to be in my bedroom, apartment building, roughly 315x315 CM (10.3ft^2), but will likely get pulled out every once in a while to the living room, which is somewhat larger.

This is going to be playing a variety of music, TV and movies and potentially down the track being plugged into my PC, but that's a while of.

The challenge here is that I'm in NZ, and local offerings are generally over priced. I can order from amazon (and usually with decent/free shipping), and you can see what will ship here if you select "AmazonGlobal Eligible" under International shipping under search.

Not to mention power comes at 240v or so, and not the 120 or so that US voltage does.

For speakers I was looking at either of the 2 options, I've read good things about both but really I'm not to sure.

I can vouch for the BIC line. The FH-65B is a darn nice set too, especially for the price.

u/jackdriper · 2 pointsr/audiophile

Sorry this doesn't (directly) answer your question, but at your budget, I think you're better off starting off with a 2.0 system than 2.1. A decent pair of speakers will have better bass extension (goes lower frequency with better clarity) than a cheap subwoofer. It's kind of only worth getting a sub if you can spend more than ~$100 on it, which would put too much strain on your budget. Wait until you save up a little more and expand a 2.0 system to include a sub.

For equipment recommendations, I'll start with the amp, since that has the least amount of flexibility. The cheapest component worth recommending is the Muse M50, but it's not great and doesn't give you a lot of room to expand. The Audiosource AMP-100 is a very capable amp at around $100. A receiver would give you A/V control, but will cost significantly more. Fortunately, there are tons of decent receivers on Craiglist for ~$50 if you're interested in going the used route.

My recommendation to those on a budget is to buy a used receiver for the amplifier. A nice balance of Good Enough quality and low cost.

For speakers, you have a ton more options that really depends on how much budget you have left after the amp. Two suggestions to get started: Pioneer and BIC. The BIC's are more home theater speakers, rather than something for a desk. They get loud, but at a higher cost.

You could also go used again. I love older B&W stuff, and you can probably find some of their speakers used in your budget.

u/GrandMasterJR · 2 pointsr/hometheater

BIC America FH-65B for $95 !!

BIC America F12 for $190

SMSL SA-50 for $70

And then you'd need some speaker wire and a 3.5mm to RCA cable (depending on your source)

u/WillkuerlicherUnrat · 2 pointsr/BudgetAudiophile

Here is a list of some of my favorite inexpensive bookshelf speakers:

Elac Debut B5.2 < Nubert NuBox 313 < Klipsch Reference R-51M < DALI Zensor 1 = Jamo S 803 < Quadral Argentum 520 = KEF Q100

u/Chrome-Head · 2 pointsr/vinyl

When you start getting down to looking at things on the scope level, I tend to believe that stuff.

HOWEVER,

I'm mainly wary of doing it because I'm concerned I'll foul something up in my table doing it myself. You have a friend willing to do the mod and for free. Doesn't sound like you have anything to lose by trying it besides the use of your table for a bit.

Alternatively, you could go the preamp / receiver route which is how I run it (and it sounds quite damn good to me). But that means more gear / wires running everywhere / power draw.

If you decide to change out your active monitors, consider these Wharfedale Diamonds. I picked up a set a few years ago, and am often blown away by the sound for the price:

You can take your budget even furthur if you are open to used components and take the time to scout out craigslist and the like.

There's a lot of very affordable knockoffs that resemble this chair if you're just interested in the look. The Herman Miller is expensive because it's very high quality (mine was made in 1983 and it still looks pretty great) and because it was designed by Charles and Ray Eames. If you haven't heard of them, they were a remarkable couple who progressed design in many areas.

The speakers aren't too hard to track down used on ebay but they only come in black stock. I found fabric in the OEM JBL colors on ebay to redo the grills. Also, the foam under the titanium dome tweeters tend to degrade on these speakers so there's a good chance you will have to buy modern reproduction tweeters. I'm not saying this to discourage you but let you know there was some work involved.

If I were to buy a new speaker now, I would pick up some KEF LS50's in black and copper. They are a spectacular sounding speaker and I think the most visually stunning speaker on the market.

I see it's your opinion, but "best" monitors at 5"? At $249 a pair? No, not even close.

Option 1: Ascend Acoustics HTM-200 SE left, right, center + Rythmik L12 subwoofer, $940 + add side speakers such as NHT SuperZero for $115 or use the Bostons

u/Shike · 2 pointsr/audiophile

Depends. If they're at a reasonable volume level and within a fair distance there's plenty of speakers that can sound pretty good without being large. If you're seeking volume, bass, low distortion, and filling a larger room things start getting more complex (and expensive).

Personally I don't feel Orb are particularly worthwhile due to using fullrange drivers which will have dispersion issue in the upper register. Instead NHT has some affordable bookshelf speakers that compare well. Considering the bargain basement pricing you could go with 5x SuperOne 2.1 from NHT with a BIC subwoofer here for a relatively compact system. Use the additional $100 to buy the wallmounts and the system should kick the Orb's ass in most objective performance criteria.

If you only need a 2.1 system, you could still go for a pair of the SuperOne and a better quality sub and get really solid performance considering. You could also step up to a more boutique speaker like Focal. Hell, if looking used you might be able to grab NHT Classic 3's for around $500/pr on Ebay which are excellent in performance being three way bookshelves. Of course, any of these would need stands, so expect a minimum $120 bump (IME) if using something quality.

This is where aesthetics, budget, room size, and performance criteria all start to play in.

u/TyGamer125 · 2 pointsr/hometheater

I looked it up and you have dome tweeters so don't get anything with a horns such as Klipsch. However they are from a home theater in a box which generally speaking aren't great. My suggestion is you should get the center now but plan on buying the matching left and right as soon as you can. The issues you could run into with running miss matched from stage (LCR) is timber imbalance where sounds don't have the same volume or pitch so sounds traveling across your front stage could sound like aaaaaaAAAAAAAaaaaaaa. My suggestion is listen to some bookshelf speakers and find ones you like then buy the center that matches them. Here are some options I found on Amazon but going to local shops to listen would be best:

u/Speedogomer · 2 pointsr/BudgetAudiophile

The Sony SSCS8 center channel is on sale as well for $73 as well.

You could put together a pretty damn respectable 5.1 system for $440.

u/CaptZ_3148 · 2 pointsr/hometheater

If willing to buy open box (I have for all my speakers without issue from authorized sellers on Amazon/Ebay)..

You could do the Klipsch Rp-150M for about $250

The center RP-250C for $240

Klipsch R-14S for surrounds at about $230

Thats gets you to about $750, throw in the cheapest 9 Channel AVR and you are now at about $1500. Id spend whatever money left on Subs. That leaves you with a very good 5.1 system that can easily be upgraded to ATMOS once you find out if you can do ceiling speakers.

For 300 bucks personally I would go with decent Powered speakers. Make sure you pick up a phono preamp as well if you go this route as opposed to using an amp+passive speakers (which is much more expensive, unless you go used). That's the setup I did, minimalist, clean, decent value, but still relatively cheap. Here's my setup for example...

https://www.amazon.com/rolls-VP29-Phono-Preamp/dp/B0002BG2R2 - Rolls VP29 Phono Preamp

https://www.amazon.com/Edifier-R1700BT-Bluetooth-Bookshelf-Speakers/dp/B016PATXSI - Edifier R1700BT Powered Speakers with Bluetooth - For the value these sound really awesome. Only downside is there are not great with lots of bass, they flubber. In retrospect I might have gotten something different, but most stuff I listen to isn't bass heavy so I'm not torn over it. I also wanted bluetooth in this room because it's a guest room.

https://www.amazon.com/Pro-Ject-Elemental-Gray-Turntable-Grey/dp/B01CZW826Y?th=1 - Pro-Ject Elemental Turntable - Great value turntable on the low-end if you buy new.

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0000513O4/ - Tripp Lite Isobar surge protector - Because I'm paranoid about this stuff and these are high end surge protectors that we use at work. They are bulletproof.

----------------------------------

So anyways... for 300 bucks you can pick up the same phono preamp and these...

https://www.amazon.com/Edifier-R2000DB-Bluetooth-Bookshelf-Speakers/dp/B01CDU3IAI

I hear the R2000's don't have the same bass issue that the r1700 does, but they cost a lot more. Edifier is kind of one of the best in value right now, it's "Chi-Fi" good. The hardcore audiophile kiddos are often brand-whores, so take their allegiance with a grain of salt and try to remain objective, read reviews, technical analysis, etc..

The A2's always get good reviews in this price range, I have no personal experience, but there are recent reviews that show problems with quality control, maybe the company is getting worse?

A lot of people swear by the Klipsch powered monitors once you get into this price range, but I don't have any personal experience, maybe someone else can chime in, just showing it here because you might want to consider it, read about them more.

https://www.amazon.com/Polk-Audio-Signature-S20-Bookshelf/dp/B01LVWWXQG

These are just barely in the price range, definitely consider them, my friend has a Polk setup and he loves it. These seem to get good reviews from hip hop heads too, so the bass response must be good.

It really depend on your musical taste, the room, what kind of setup you are wanting to go with overall and for what purpose though. If you want to be able to handle everything, up the budget, or buy used honestly. If you stay on a small budget and buy new, you are going to have to have compromises. I was wiling to have that compromise, but others may not.

Yes, this setup is for desktop and to be used nearfield. Considering I already have an Micca OriGen, would the OriGain AD250 be suitable to run along side the headphone amp? The OriGain seems to have a line out as well. I know it will take 2 USB ports and I'm fine with that.

Also, I'm having a hard time deciding between the Aperion Intimus 5B's and the Klipsch RP150M's. My budget is $350, and at that threshold I am already waiting for the RP150M's to drop down in price. Which of these two would be best for nearfield listening with wedges? Would the Micca OriGain AD250 be suitable to power my choices? Also, am I overlooking a pair of speakers? Ideally, I want something that has a respectable bass profile, doesn't sound flat and muddy, and is within my budget.

Thank you /u/ZeosPantera

u/nicerakc · 1 pointr/hometheater

I would look at a pair of Klipsch bookshelf speakers. Pair that with a decent receiver and you'll reach pretty loud levels in that room. If you want to spend a little more, add a subwoofer too.

u/elitepilot09 · 1 pointr/hometheater

First of all, thank you for a such a detailed post! You provided great insight and appreciate that.

Now - To be perfectly honest, I don't know too much about bipoles and dipoles to comfortably experiment with them. But I will try to educate myself further and research before I purchase the front 3 speakers. Do you have any floorstanding tower speaker recommendation for these?

The set up for the seating is simply 2 rows of 4 seats each, the rear seating row is slightly elevated on a step.

The media room in question is wired for a 7.1 set up (2 at the back wallmounted, 2 at the sides wallmounted, 2 at the front floorstanding, and the center speaker and sub in the middle front).

You suggested that I use 2 subs, but the room is only wired for 1 sub at the front. Would a larger subwoofer be a suitable substitute for two smaller ones? If so, do you have any recommendations that would work well in tandem with my receiver? Also, thanks for the video reference on the sub placement!

All wiring in the room is 14 gauge. I will look into the banana plugs, they look easy and convenient and i'll certainly pick up a couple of those when this is all said and done.

What do you think of this set up /u/homeboi808 ? I have to ask because you seem very knowledgeable in all this!

Looking at getting an amp, and found that the APPJ mini2013 6J1+6P1 will go on sale on Massdrop soon. I'm looking at pairing it with a pair of Klipsch RP-150M, will this be sufficient? Any recommendations in the $100-$200 range are welcome as well.

u/WhatsThatDooDad · 1 pointr/audiophile

Hello! I'm looking to pick up an entry level receiver and either floorstanding or bookshelf speakers + stands. I'm hoping to spend $500 total or less, but could go up to $700 total for a significant improvement.

I'm not very knowledgeable about the space, so currently eyeing a few of the basic Klipsch bookshelf speakers since I know they're decent and look nice. I'm even considering springing for these piano black ones since they look great and could be somewhat of an accent piece. I know that's trading form for what could be used to purchase better function, but I admit I do care a lot about the look of the speakers. Those piano black ones would leave almost no budget left for a decent receiver, stands (considering these), wires, etc. though.

I'll be using the system with my TV at about 6 feet away from the couch and should have about 6-10" of room behind the speakers. Not ideal unfortunately, but my apartment space is limited. Would a front ported speaker like this one help at all? From what I've read, it seems the bass would still be a problem.

I'll mostly be using it for gaming, movies, and music, but no genres in particular. I plan on connecting my ps4 and TV via the optical digital out port to minimize any potential input lag from running HDMI through the receiver while gaming.

I currently have a shitty system that is not salvageable, so will be starting fresh and plan to buy new. I'm living in NYC, though I'm guessing online will be cheaper in my case. Open to any and all recommendations or advice! Thank you!

u/ynotplay · 1 pointr/audiophile

Hello. I'm no audiophile by any stretch of the imagination but started djing as a hobby at home and want to start making some music on my computer as well. I currently use a low end 2.1 speakers and need to upgrade. I've been looking at the Edifier R1280T and Micca PB42X to use as my starter studio monitors, for djing at house parties, and also as my general speakers attached to my computer. When Djing at I think I will need more bass than the the above two speakers have to offer.

I am also considering the Edifier R2000DB (Powered Bluetooth Bookshelf Speakers - Near-Field Studio Monitors - Optical Input - 5 inch Subwoofer - 120 Watts RMS) https://www.amazon.com/Edifier-R2000DB-Bluetooth-Bookshelf-Speakers/dp/B016PAWJYS/ref=sr_1_7?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1487192389&sr=1-7&keywords=Edifier+R1280T if it can output enough bass without an external subwoofer.

Does anyone know whether it's possible (and an okay idea) to connect a subwoofer to these active bookshelf speakers? Any other recommendation are welcome. Thank you!

Using digital formats lose something.

u/RedditWhileIWerk · 1 pointr/diysound

FWIW these are the speakers I bought: Edifier R2000DB Powered Bluetooth Bookshelf Speakers

Pros: compact, all-in-one design, decent power (120W RMS), all the features I wanted save subwoofer (they're kinda built in to each speaker), nothing permanently wired together (I hate those).

Cons: Not that big of a bass driver, in fact the two in these are smaller than the single bass driver in my VS4221's. But, the way higher power rating should make up for that. Way over my stated budget ($200), lol.

Also these are near-field monitors. Not completely ideal, but I'm not all that concerned about far-field performance. These'll do fine for background music during parties, while cooking, etc.

  • FiiO D3 DAC
  • Onkyo TX-910 receiver
  • Bose Model 21 bookshelf speakers
  • Celestion CS135 passive sub woofer
Would like to upgrade the bookshelf speakers, preferably passive, looking in the 4-5" range. Listen to everything from dubstep, miami bass, classical, hip-hop, adult contemporary...

I had some Klipsch Promedia 2.1's but they died after 2 years. They were ok, but want something with better sound, my current setup has been pulled out of storage from the late 90s ;)

I would like to spend in the $200-300 range for a pair.

u/Bearded-Reefer · 1 pointr/vinyl

u/jjcooke · 1 pointr/BudgetAudiophile

I'm not sure $800 is enough budget for tower speakers unless you would buy Klipsch or Andrew Jones Pioneer. Most good tower speakers which wouldn't really need a sub and would be audiophile quality are something like $550 each.

I would get bookshelves and a subwoofer, and you can upgrade them in the future if you wish. For the bookshelves, do something like this:

KEF Q300B Bookshelf Loudspeakers - Black Ash (Pair) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00CE3LG9U/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_xwLDzbT9SB2WF

Or, slightly cheaper:

Klipsch RP-150M Bookshelf Speaker - Cherry (Pair) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00RXHEH8Y/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_LHLDzb4SG7WJF

Wharfedale - Diamond 220 (Walnut) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00P15KDCO/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_9RLDzbZ86871K

DALI - ZENSOR 1 - Bookshelf Speakers in Light Walnut (Pair) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0057X8796/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_VSLDzbP0MK16M

And for the sub:

SVS SB-1000 – 12”, 300 Watt DSP Controlled, Sealed Box Subwoofer (Black Ash) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00AF88C0M/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_LDLDzbRASPMQT

This puts you over budget by $100 if you go with the KEFs and $35 if you go Klipsch (which would be significantly louder, more V shaped sound (bass and treble, less mids), but less detailed). I haven't heard the wharfedales or dalis in person so I can't comment on their sound. So, I would start with just the speakers and then decide if you want a sub or not, if you do, continue saving.

Edit: some tower options that are less than $800:

I have the Kanto YU2's on my desktop (A lil over budget) and they sound fantastic, especially with FxSoundEnhancer. Made them much louder and clearer. Alternatives are the audioengine A2+ which are a little more expensive but get a little louder. Both sound real good with EQ modifications.

I also have the Edifier R1280T (you can get them "renewed" for $80) and they are absolutely wonderful for the price and look great too, the only gripes is they don't have a built in DAC like the kantos and they're pretty big for a desk setup.

I like the bookshelf speaker setup for desktops instead of the tinny, no bass pc speakers that are usually under $100 and have tried a few before settling on the ones that look and sound good.

At that level of budget, you simply don't have a lot of wiggle room. You'd be pretty much limited to stereo (2.0), and you'd likely have to get the most budget of budget speakers (probably Dayton B452's).

A better compromise may be a decent pair of powered speakers like the Fluance Ai40, Edifier R1280DB or Micca PB42X. Another option would be to get a mini amp like the Dayton DTA-2.1BT2 and pair it with passive bookshelfs like Micca RB42's or MB42X's.

There are other audio "solutions" out there, but nothing that we would suggest in good faith around here. My honest advise is to wait and save up for a more robust budget so you can invest in quality stuff that will last you longer.

u/clupean · 1 pointr/buildapc

Since you don't have much room for speakers and you're not even sure where to put the subwoofer, you could get standard 2.0 bookshelf speakers like the Edifier R1280DB or Edifier R1280T (5.75in x 9.5in x 7in per speaker) if you don't care about the optical input, or the Logitech Z333 (Blutooth variant) if you prefer something similar to what you had before.

u/Macc_ · 1 pointr/crtgaming

As others have said, 2.0 or 2.1 speakers will do you just fine and are often if not usually superior to plasticy sound bars.

You don't even need a receiver or amp if you go with a pair of self-powered speakers (aka "powered monitors"). They tend to have multiple inputs on them and an output for sub woofers.

I have a pair of Edifier R1280DBs coming from my console switcher, which are fine for that purpose. If you use the space for other media or newer consoles, you may want to go bigger. /r/Zeos has some great guides.

u/He11scythe · 1 pointr/audiophile

Does anyone have experience with the Edifier R1280DB? I am hoping someone could tell me how well it compares to the Micca setup mentioned above.

One of the main things is that I need speakers with a remote control to turn them on/off and adjust volume. These will be plugged in to my TV (either optical or aux) and the aux output from the TV is not adjustable, hence the speakers themselves need to be adjustable via remote.

Edit: I am also looking at the Samsung HW-R450 Sound Bar and am wondering which one to choose, or if there are other good speakers within this same price range (Under $200) that I should be considering.

Final question: do you think the bookshelfs are adequate to fill a 12x12 living room? I don't have a ton of experience there.

I have a pair of Polk RTi A1 and a Yamaha R-S202 and am looking to add a subwoofer to this setup. I live in a small dorm room and was wondering where it would fit in my desk set up or if I should even buy one. What do you guys think? I was thinking that I should go with the Polk PSW505. Or should I go with upgrading my amp to one with less THD?

Halp!

I found a JVC L-A55 Direct Drive Turntable and am looking to get the best sound possible for $500-600, I don’t know if I should spent the money on speakers, or speakers and a new cartridge, or some other combination.
I’d also like to connect the speakers to my television if possible.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Also, I have no idea if I need an amp, please don’t judge me too harshly.
These are the speakers I was looking at, if that matters.
Thank you again!

Hi guys!

So I bought a pair of Fluance SX-6s based on Zeos video review. I like them, but they are not easily mountable and kind of big. Any other recommendations in the price range? Only thing I can think of are the Miccas. I know the Pioneer BS22 is all the rage, but idk. I like the look of these, but don't know if the price is for the pair

I have a BIC F-12 to pair with them and some nice bipole surrounds (fluance XLBP)

My room is about 8.5' x 10.5' x 6.5'

Wow you are awesome thanks again. And to Just clarify I could get three of the LCR's and just use two as R/L and then the third as the center. I noticed almost everyone referred to the ones in your link as "centers." Or should I look into these http://www.amazon.com/America-FH-65B-Bookshelf-Speakers-6-5IN/dp/B002ISTP8K/ref=pd_sim_e_1 as the R/L and then the LCR as the center. I read your posts on zeos and I saw you recommended these http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0051WAM64/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=B0051WAM64&linkCode=as2&tag=wwwpuresimula-20 for bookshelves...is that only for gaming. I honestly am thinking that a 2.1 or 3.1 (with center) is a better setup then a 5.1 for right now.

In commercial theaters with height channels, the speakers are pointed backwards a bit. It's hard to find images that illustrate this, but you'll see it in AMC's new Dolby Cinema theaters. Depending on the slope of your ceiling and the proximity of the speakers to the couch, it might not be ideal, but it's rare to have a 100% ideal theater room.

I read earlier today on this sub about Speakercraft's AIM series. If you have the money for it, then it might make sense to replace the JBLs with those. As far as alternatives for the other speakers, I'm not really sure. BIC America's Acoustec speakers are approximately the same color if you decide to run them without a grille (of that's really important to you), but they use horn tweeters, so they likely have the same level of brightness as Klipsch. I'll check the buying guide for another one that I don't remember the name of and report back.

Edit: Checked the guide.

On the slightly cheaper end, there's the Pioneer Andrew Jones series. Pioneer makes good speakers, but stay away from their receivers; Pioneer is owned by Onkyo now, and that brings Onkyo's build quality issues with it. Denon, Marantz, Yamaha, and Harman/Kardon are the companies that you should look at for receivers.

Bookshelf, Center, Tower

On the slightly more expensive end, there's the aforementioned BIC America speakers. Bookshelf, LCR (Left/Center/Right), Tower

You could do it two ways: Start with a speaker like this - and spend the rest on a receiver you like; you could look on www.accessories4less.com. The other approach is to begin with the receiver: perhaps something like this, would leave you with funds for these or these speakers. Conventional wisdom states that the majority of the budget be spent on speakers - however, with AV receivers, you may be looking for a certain feature set, so your decision may have to be based on that.

I'm really intrigued by the Dali Zensor 1 for $395 on Amazon. I've had a pair in my cart for about a year and the price has never changed.

You have a ton of flexibility with your budget. You could probably even upgrade your speakers, amp and turntable with a little luck on Craigslist. Some of the vintage speakers I've enjoyed are: Advent Loudspeakers, Klipsch KG4, Dynaco A25 and DCM TF600. You can find any of those for less than $200 if you're patient.

u/smackdaddies · 1 pointr/BudgetAudiophile
u/Jeeebs · 1 pointr/vinyl

You'll see the biggest jump just getting a decent amp/receiver and speakers. The turntable isn't great but if you're going straight from the turntable into powered speakers, I'd almost guarantee powered speakers will be the weak-point.

https://www.amazon.com/Wharfedale-DIA101-ROS-Diamond-10-1-Rosewood/dp/B0079XG4TW/

Keep in mind that receiver only does audio, not video, which could be a consideration for later upgrades.

Hi All,

I'm not an audiophile so I need your expert help!

My wife recently got a turntable and she's currently just got it hooked up to our TV soundbar via a preamp. Her birthday is coming up so I wanted to get her an amplifier and some bookshelf speakers. She likes the MCM style for the house so I wanted to get an amplifier with tubes for the aesthetic and novelty but i'm not sure what amp to buy.

I've already purchased these Wharfdale diamon 10.1 speakers and I noticed that it says the recommended amplification is 20-100W. I found this pretty affordable Monoprice amp but it says it's only 10W per channel. Is that correct? will this not work with the speakers I've purchased? Based on the setup they show on the monoprice website it seems like it's designed for bookshelf speakers. Am I missing something with this power output rating?

u/radddchaddd · 1 pointr/vinyl

A buddy of mine has [these ](http://www.Wharfedale.com/ - Diamond 10.1 (Rosewood) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0079XG4TW/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_wPKSybTXTC9S4) and they are damn good. Granted it's paired with Technics 1200 and a vintage Pioneer amp.

I personally have a very budget with Micca MB42x which would be on the bottom end of your budget. While good performers, your budget allows for better.

u/oddsnsodds · 1 pointr/audiophile

In this price range, you could also get an SMSL SA-50 and Wharfedale Diamond 10.1s:

https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B00A2QLGEQ/

https://smile.amazon.com/dp/B0079XG4TW/

The Wharfedales are a bit large for desktop speakers, but they're very good. The amp is 50W/ch, better than most powered speakers.

You'd still need a pre-amp, however. I don't know what's available there; I don't own any vinyl.

Edit: KEF Q100s are also available for $250. These are $550 speakers marked down for clearance after a new model was released. I have both speakers. The KEFs are in my home theater; they have great clarity and presence. They're a little dry, it's great for audio and video soundstage. The Wharfedale's are a little less accurate but warmer; I use those on my PC, where the nearfield experience is what I want. Both have excellent bass extension.

Also, the receiver has bays for four speakers even though I only have these two at the moment. Is there a certain additional set I should get that would pair well with those?

u/Scrotum_Of_Stalin · 1 pointr/audiophile

Ok, it's good to know I am on the right track then. I've been heavily considering the LCD3 and HE6, but neither still sound as good as these for example and those KEFs aren't even floor standing speakers:

You could look at Wharfedale's diamond series speakers (220 or 225) to stick with the brand. Alternatives I also enjoy are Q acoustics 3020 or concept 20, Dali Zensor, Sonus Faber Principia 1. I would always recommend listening to a couple of different speakers before actually settling on a specific set though, maybe your tastes are completely different from mine. If there are no dealers near you, you could always try to select your top 3 in your price bracket, order all of them and send 2 pairs back ;).

As far as cheap amps go, I only tested a SMSL SA-60 which seemed a little weak with some bigger speakers (could've been a bad unit since I've heard so many good things about those little amps, who knows) and upgraded that to a Pro-ject Stereo Box S. I actually like the Pro-ject amp for small setups. (comes with a tiny remote and has 2 sets of RCA inputs). I found that I didn't need anything else with bookshelf speakers up to around 1.200€ after testing a couple of full size amps that were supposed to be "so much better".

Good Luck

u/Skitch_n_Sketch · 1 pointr/audiophile

LSR305's would be the default suggestion, but it'd already be stretching your budget. Plus I can't find a European site that sells them without marking them up even more. The best option I can find for you is the Wharfedale Diamond 220 paired with a SMSL SA-50. If you could verify that the prices aren't wildly out of budget that'd be great, not sure how accurate my side is.

Here's a review I pulled from a forum if you're interested.

>The bass that is present is quite clean but the lower mids can seem a bit muddy at times. But a good plus on the bass is the down firing port makes it very easy to place these in a room and the extension is nice, not as good as the SuperOne’s but very close.

>The imaging and soundstage on these are wonderful and there’s also a bit of treble roll off and tilt towards the bass.

>What I noticed about both Wharfedales is they have a bit of a thicker sound than the rest of the speakers, not sure exactly how to explain it but they carry a bit of weight/body to their sound that most other speakers don’t have and just about all of the other speakers sound thing when quickly A/B’ing them except for the Elac B6’s.

>These sound a bit warm.

Pros:

  • Quality mid-bass kick
  • Down firing bass makes these easy to place

    Cons:

  • The lower mids get a bit muddy
  • Can get a bit hot at times on snares and female vocals

Dont think miccas would be any upgrade on what you have there.

Would recommend saving more before going shopping for new, it makes zero sense that you got 100€ speakers and now feel like upgrading by upping the budget by 50€ from the last time?

Isnt that like price of 4 beers and a pack of smokes in germany?

As always people say... maybe try looking around for some used stuff on whatever is the equivalent of craiglist in germany.

But I really hate comments like the one I wrote, they are so generic even though right that used stuff offers so much more value.

So, if I am reading right you would be willing to go 100€ amp and 150€ speakers.

That puts you close to the very popular active JBL lsr 305 that go for 150€ per speaker on german amazon.

Or get a small handy amp like smls sa-60 for 80€ or up one with build in DAC for 110€ - FXAudio D802

and then passives lets say wharfedale diamond 210 or upping it to diamond 220.

Klipsch speakers have a very distinct sound, specifically in the way they reproduce high pitched sounds. Some people love that some people don't. (Edit: it also appears that these are a budget series of Klipsch, I've never heard them so I can't attest to their quality)

It also depends on your music source whether or not you'll enjoy them. I am personally a big fan of the Wharfedale Diamond 220 series for their price.

Edit: Just saw you were looking for towers, unfortunately I don't know what the better budget towers would be.

No experience with the KEF. I have the Klipsch RP-160M and love them, I was not used to this kind of quality and detail. Listening to old songs I could hear new sounds I hadn't noticed. And they can get ridiculously loud. Also a plus the design, sober and elegant.

The KEF Q100 are on amazon right now at $249, the Klipsch RP 160M are over $500, so maybe they are not even in the same class, if you can get the Klipsch for $300 I'd say go grab them.

So I'm brand new to the home audio world in general, but for the last couple of years I've been dreaming about starting a record collection and buying a decent stereo setup. Decent here means $1-2k budget tops.

I'm finally settled into a new job and I'm starting to think It's time to make this happen. I'm looking for recommendations for each piece: turntable, amp (integrated or power + pre), and bookshelf speakers to go in my living room. Probably a DAC at some point so I can listen to some of my digital media.

The only thing I am really firm about is a tube amplifier. I honestly just love the aesthetics and the warm sound... I know that my budget won't give me the best equipment, but I can upgrade down the road.

A 5.1.2 setup will blow any sound bar out of the water. And you don’t need massive speakers. Small bookshelf speakers can provide great sound quality. These ELAC bookshelves are great at just over 5” tall.
