Wow, most of us don't even have a butler, let alone one we could cook.

Seriously, though. If all else fails, you could maybe cheat a little and try some meat glue to seal them up.

It is, but the savings here are being overstated. It's not a product with a huge margin, and the prices they get are based on bulk buys. Here's 16 ounces of extract on Amazon. Here's enough beans to make 12 ounces.

I'd also suggest light rum over vodka, personally.

dude--wanna take it to a new level? invest in some cheddar powder. me and my boyfriend do this on our sloppiest of nights: http://www.amazon.com/Hoosier-Hill-Farm-Cheddar-Powder/dp/B0099XPG94?ie=UTF8&keywords=cheddar%20powder&qid=1465321639&ref_=sr_1_1_a_it&sr=8-1

Coffee Lovers

You NEED this milk frother thing in your life if you make coffee at home! It heats and foams milk in like 60 seconds, and makes it SO FOAMY! Seriously, I feel no need to go out and get lattes anymore. I look forward to my homemade coffee so much now! My lattes are a grand total of 15 cals now (throw in some pumpkin pie spices and it's so good), and if I turn them into a mocha via some cocoa powder they're up to a whopping 40 calories. It's amazing! (I use stevia for sweetener)

Tips: Unsweetened almond milk foams great! Blue Diamond slightly more so than Silk. Unsweetened flax and cashew milk (edit: two separate milks) don't foam for some reason. Coconut milk TBD. Regular milk foams fantastic (of course, but I'm dairy free, so trying all the milk alternatives). Don't put anything besides milk into the frother or it won't foam (all add-ins go into the coffee first, then dump milk/foam on top).

Not all almond flours are created equal. Most of the stuff that's easiest to find is pretty coarse and won't act as nicely as finer grinds.

This stuff isn't cheap, but it's very fine and you might find that it works better than coarser flours. There are other fine grinds available, but they all seem to actually say it on the packaging.

Edit: To answer your actual question, no, I've never sifted almond or coconut flour.

It might be kind of fun to start shipping hemp products to our lawmakers. As an example, Costco has sold this product in the Treasure Valley for nearly three years:

If the powdered Vega didn't work for you, you may want to try their pre-mixed shake:

1.Product

Why did you pick Coconut Oil? While it does all the things you mention, it has safer alternatives that are just as good. Mainly Coconut Oil is comedogenic (https://www.beneficialbotanicals.com/facts-figures/comedogenic-rating.html), high rate of clogging skin pores, and generally can cause more problems to skin than solve for some people. Most suggested oils from /r/SkincareAddiction are: Jojoba Oil (but also is a little comedogenic), Neem Oil, Hemp Oil (0 comedogenic). All these oils also have moisturizing, anti inflammatory, anti redness, etc.. benefits.

2.Price

1 ounce for 14$ at your shop, or something off Amazon, 16 ounces for 8 bucks. Yes, a cooking oil can be used topically, it's the same.

3."Uses of Oil", some sentences have words like "seem" which sounds like you guys don't even know about the product. Anti-Cancer, sounds so fishy, don't think there's enough evidence for that. Generally refine the page, also add more content, coconut oil can do much more. Anti-inflammatory, don't think main usage will be against bug bites, but more commonly skin redness, acne, etc.

Then the "How to use coconut oil" section, either remove it at all or rewrite with some actual guides, how to store (because it starts melting at around 24 celsius degrees), etc.

  • 16 oz Mason Jar with Plastic Lid
  • Steel Cut Oats (7 oz)
  • 1 tbsp (2 rounded normal spoons) of Chia Seeds
  • Add Almond Milk to ~9 oz (more than 2 oz)
  • Mix
  • Blueberries (12+)
  • Raspberries (6+)
  • PB2 (2 tbsp)
  • Fill to rim with Greek Yogurt
  • Shake the shit out of it

Warning: this is pretty calorie dense (~1K kcal, the oats alone are 600 kcal) but you can easily adjust it. First, remove the PB2 (45 kcal.) Then reduce the oats slightly or substitute a yogurt with less sugar, but I'd recommend just scaling everything because this mix tastes amazing and has perfect mouth feel.

Marshmallows are so delicious but the kinds you find at the grocery store are PACKED with sugar and carbs. Store-bought marshmallows such as Kraft Jet-Puffed have a whopping 24 grams of carbs and 17 grams of sugar per serving. Those marshmallows would blow your blood sugar through the roof!

This awesome recipe though has no sugar and 0g net carbs. Plus it only uses five ingredients. Check it out below with more details and tips at the source link

RECIPE: KETO MARSHMALLOWS USING ALLULOSE

(NO SUGAR, LOW-CARB, GLUTEN FREE, KETO, DIABETIC FRIENDLY)

Servings: 24 Jumbo Marshmallows (~38 grams each)

Prep Time: 20 Minutes

Resting Time: 4 Hours

INGREDIENTS

  • 1 1/4 Cup Water, divided
  • 3 Tbsp Gelatin (we used Great Lakes Pure Beef Gelatin which you can get on Amazon)
  • 3 Cups Allulose, plus an extra 1/4 cup for dusting (we used the ChipMonk blend of Monk Fruit and Allulose: AlluMonk. You can find other allulose brands online as well)
  • 1 Tbsp Vanilla Extract (we used McCormick, but any brand should work fine)
  • 1/4 tsp Fine Sea Salt
  • Optional food coloring if you want colored marshmallows

    INSTRUCTIONS

  • Lightly grease two 8x8 square baking pans OR one 9x13 baking pan with pan spray and line the pans with a strip of parchment. We recommend spraying the pans once more to grease the parchment.
  • Add 1/2 cup water to a bowl. Sprinkle the gelatin over the water and immediately whisk the gelatin into the water. Set the gelatin mixture aside to bloom while you make the allulose syrup.
  • In a medium heavy-bottomed saucepan, pour in the remaining 3/4 cup water and whisk in your 3 cups of allulose. Continually mix while you heat the pan up on your stove. You want to heat the mixture to 240 degrees Fahrenheit. Use a candy thermometer or digital thermometer to continually monitor the temperature.
  • Once the allulose syrup reaches 240 degrees F, carefully add the hot syrup to the gelatin mixture in your other bowl. Add in the vanilla and salt and start to mix either using an electric hand mixer or a stand mixer. You do not want to do this by hand, trust us! Turn the mixer speed up to medium and whip until the marshmallow begins to thicken and lighten in color. At this point, you can turn the mixer up to high speed without the liquid making a giant mess. Whip on high for at least 15 minutes. You will know it's done when the marshmallow is VERY thick, glossy, cool to the touch, and holds firm peaks.
  • If you want to color your marshmallows, add in a few drops of food coloring during the mixing process.
  • Working quickly, use a rubber spatula to scrape the marshmallow into the prepared pans. Use an offset spatula to smooth the surface as much as possible (you can oil both spatulas to help prevent sticking if you want to). Allow the marshmallows to set for at least four hours or overnight.
  • Using a blender, grind the additional 1/4 cup of allulose for dusting until it's the consistency of confectioners sugar.
  • Use the parchment paper to lift the marshmallow out of the pans. Using an oiled knife, trim the edges and then slice the marshmallows into strips. Dust the surfaces of each marshmallow strip with the powdered allulose. Then slice the marshmallow strips into squares and dust the cut sides.
  • Store the marshmallows in an airtight container. Or, lightly cover the container with a paper towel and allow them to dry out overnight, undisturbed.

I get Anthony’s nutritional yeast at Whole Foods, But it can be ordered from amazon. It’s a big bag and lasts a long time.

u/thatguyonthetrain · 7 pointsr/1200isplenty

If you're just asking about where to find it, I purchased mine through Amazon, but if you have a whole foods, a coop, or a high quality grocery store nearby I bet you'd be able to find Bob's Red Mill brand.

Both have been around for a couple decades and are both very high quality. My bottle of Xanthan from amazon has lasted me over 6 months, if not closer to 9.

Let me know if I misunderstood you.

u/Ycerides614 · 6 pointsr/Futurology

There is. Xanthan gum, my friend. Super cheap and highly effective. It's used in a TON of products and you probably consume it already on a daily basis (used as a thickener and stabilizer). I add a tsp or two to my protein shakes (in a blender) in order to achieve a milkshake like consistency. It transform a drink from a frothy, watery consistency with ice chunks sinking to the bottom to a thick, milkshake like thickness and even, uniform body. Seriously, you'll never look back and a $5 container will last you months! I use this product specifically, though it can be found even cheaper; http://www.amazon.com/NOW-Foods-Xanthan-Ounce-Bottle/dp/B0014UH7J2
I use;
-1 scoop of Whey Protein

  • ~1 cup of ice
    -8-10oz of Whole Milk
    -1-2 tsp of Xanthan Gum
    Then blend for 20-30 seconds
    HIGHLY recommended. Enjoy!

Welcome! A suitable replacement might be something like liquid stevia. A few drops is all you need and there are even flavored options! Although the taste may seem a tiny bit different at first. Otherwise, stevia has a good record and positive reputation. However, some of the artificial or synthetic offerings can be good options too!

this amazing cheese powder!

it tastes exactly like the cheese powder from Kraft Macaroni & Cheese. Except better. I dump it all over popcorn and I could cry it's so delicious. I might have a sodium addiction.

Meat glue and sodium citrate.

Black garlic.

Maverick dual probe wireless thermometer. You can stick 1 probe in the oven or smoker, 1 probe in the meat, then clip the wireless monitor to your pocket. When the meat hits your target temp, it beeps. If the meat temp or cooking temp varies outside the range you set, it beeps.

Turner.

Baking steel. Works better than a baking stone for making pizza.

Mortar & pestle. Food dehydrator.

Water oven.

Weber Smokey Mountain 18.5.

Some alternative sweeteners are designed to be substituted 1:1 with regular sugar in baking. By volume and by calories they are mostly bulking agent (I believe dextrose is the typical choice). Those products are not good for keto dieting.

If you just want something to sweeten your coffee or whatever, make sure what you've purchased is pure alternative sweetener and not bulked with other sugars. Sweet Drops (liquid) and Splenda Naturals (powder) are what I bought; both are 0 calories.

I'm actually doing keto as a vegan, so I might be able to help you out some!

  • For butter, I really like either Miyoko's Cultured Butter (you can find it at Trader Joe's if you live on the West Coast) or Earth Balance, which is more readily available at major supermarket chains. I'll also use avocado or olive oil for cooking.

  • For milk, I use either Tempt Hemp Milk or, if I want a little extra protein boost, Ripple, which is made with pea protein. I buy the unsweetened original variety for both; Tempt has 1g net carb per 8 oz, Ripple has 0g net. I find the Tempt at markets like Whole Foods -- I buy my Ripple at Target.

  • I use dairy-free cheeses very sparingly because they are higher in carbs than I'd like, but I've found that Chao (available at WF/some major supermarkets) is kinda the best bet.

  • I eat mayo with most of my meals, usually either Vegenaise (I like the Pesto and Chipotle flavors) or Just Mayo. Vegenaise is another WF kinda find, but Just Mayo is really widely available (even Walmart sells it!). There's also dressings available from the same company that makes Just Mayo -- the Ranch and Caesar are both really tasty.

  • Shelled hemp seeds are fantastic, too -- one 3 tbsp serving has 170 cal - 13g fat - 0g net carbs - 10g protein. I usually mix them in with whatever I'm eating since they have a pretty neutral flavor.

Let me know if there are any dairy replacements that you're really interested in and I can probably point you in a good direction!

TL;DR if you can find carrington farms LIQUID coconut oil (they sell it at many Walmarts) that'll work, otherwise use canola, olive or whatever other oil you have.

I personally do not have the time nor the patience to blanch my own almonds. It requires that you take the skin off of each individual almond... that, I think, is insanity.

However, if you buy blanched almond slivers, and have the right kind of food processor or blender, you literally just dump and grind until you get enough flour.

So really it's just up to you and how much work you want to do.

I order mine on Amazon and I get Anthony's blanched almond flour.

I can justify the cost because I usually just use 3 tbsp at a time for "bread", or the occasional pizza which is only 85 grams. So a 2 lbs bag lasts a couple months.

“ Nutritional yeast is a deactivated yeast, often a strain of Saccharomyces cerevisiae, which is sold commercially as a food product. It is sold in the form of flakes or as a yellow powder and can be found in the bulk aisle of most natural food stores. It is popular with vegans and vegetarians and may be used as an ingredient in recipes or as a condiment.[1]

It is a significant source of some B-complex vitamins and contains trace amounts of several other vitamins and minerals.[2] Sometimes nutritional yeast is fortified with vitamin B12.

Nutritional yeast has a strong flavor that is described as nutty, cheesy, or creamy, which makes it popular as an ingredient in cheese substitutes. It is often used by vegans in place of cheese,[3] for example in mashed and fried potatoes, in scrambled tofu, or as a topping for popcorn.[4]”

Honeyville is cheaper.

u/mindlessgrenade · 4 pointsr/keto

I've managed to make "keto poptarts" - no recipe, just eyeballed it. You will need to drop some initial cash on the almond flour - it'll last a while and is used in a lot of recipes (meatloaf, pancakes, etc.)

Recipe (you'll need to fine tune this - taste it as you go)
Crust - 1/2 cup Almond Flour, 1 Egg, Butter, Salt, Sweetner- spread onto bottom of greased pan.

Filling - Cream Cheese, Egg, Sugar Free Maple Syrup (doesnt take much), Sweetner

Top with cinnamon, bake for 10 minutes ~350F, chill in freezer/fridge.

Lasts at least a week in the fridge. Could probably up the crunch through pan frying the finished product.

I'm going to experiment with different fillings in place of maple syrup (cocoa powder, low sugar/low carb fruit spreads, etc.) I wouldn't eat these every day, might cause a stall but they're great run and go breakfast and fairly low cost.

Don't have a real answer on the meat side of things - I've had luck finding cheap beef cuts (miniature round steaks) - season the shit out of them and cook then in a pan with butter. Add egg, breakfast done.

u/RonnieTheEffinBear · 4 pointsr/soylent

I do DIY soylent, not Joylent, but I started adding a 1/2 tsp to 1 tsp of Xanthan Gum to my day's worth of powder to thicken it up and it works great. It's the same stuff that fast food joints use to thicken up milkshakes.

Edit: if you go this route, start with just a little and work your way up until you've dialed it in to the thickness you like. A little goes a long way and if you add too much, it takes on sort of a "mucus-y" consistency. Yuck!

I order my groceries through FreshDirect so technically I get 90% of my stuff online :).

That being said...the stuff I get outside of that site are:

  1. Japanese Mayo to make the spicy mayo that you get at sushi restaurants (just mix in Siracha).

  2. Emergen-C Electro Mix for my electrolytes kick.

  3. Erythritol cause....sugar.

  4. Stevia for a different sweetener used in mostly drinks/liquids where it's more difficult to dissolve the Erythritol.

  5. [Liquid Smoke] (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0005Z8NCM/ref=oh_details_o08_s00_i00?ie=UTF8&psc=1)

  6. BACON JERKY!

  7. Maple flavor

  8. Awesome awesome peanut butter

  9. Kerrygold unsalted butter. My grocery store doesn't carry it :(

  10. Vitamins from various places...Vitamin D-3, Magnesium, Daily Multi-vitamin, Cod Fish Oil, etc.

    EDIT: Formatting.

I make the dankest 1000 cal shake imaginable. Follow these steps:

  1. Get a 8 pound tub o' whole oats powder from Amazon
  2. Get a 2 pack of 28oz Blender Bottles from Amazon

    Recipe/Instructions:

  • Put some blended mixed frozen fruit in the bottle (blend the frozen fruit in a blender in bulk with water - keep refrigerated for further use throughout the week)
  • Pour a little milk in
  • Put 1.5 to 2 scoops of vanilla protein powder in
  • Pour a little milk in
  • Put 1 scoop of the oat powder in
  • Pour a little milk in
  • Put 2.5 generous spoonfuls of vanilla or plain greek yogurt in
  • Put 5 tablespoons of peanut butter POWDER in
  • Pour enough milk to reach near the top of the bottle

Close it up, secure it, and shake - enjoy the dankness - super smooth consistency - EZ

Also, you'll notice - my ingredients are very similar to yours but the key difference is POWDERED whole oats, POWDERED PB, and BLENDED (w/ water) fruit.

u/genericlabstudent · 4 pointsr/1200isplenty

The price per serving of rotini was $2.00 (not including shipping costs), and the cheez would be $0.66. I used Fairlife milk, but regular skim milk would be $0.03, and the spread would be $0.08.

So the total is $2.79/serving, with the majority of the price coming from the the pasta. To put that into perspective, the price of a 5 pack of Kraft mac and cheese is like $4.75.

The pasta is $8/bag, cheez is $12/lb, milk is $3.50/gallon, and the spread is $2.50/15oz tub. It would take $26 to acquire the ingredients to make this recipe.

Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup butter
  • 1 cup natural unsweetened peanut butter
  • 1 cup powdered sweetener
  • 1/8 tsp liquid stevia
  • 1 tsp pure vanilla extract
  • 3 1/2 ounce Dark chocolate bar (90% cacao)

    Instructions

  • Place butter and peanut butter in a medium-size bowl.  Microwave, stirring every 30 seconds until completely melted.
  • Add sweetener, stevia and vanilla. Stir until smooth.  Pour into a 8x8 pan lined with parchment paper.  Place in freezer for 10 minutes.
  • Break chocolate into pieces and place in a small bowl.  Melt in microwave, stirring every 30 seconds until just melted, careful not to scorch.  (may also use a double boiler for this step)
  • Remove peanut butter layer from freezer.  Pour chocolate over peanut butter and use the back of spoon or spatula to evenly spread the chocolate.  Return to freezer for 1 hour.  Allow to sit out for a few minutes before cutting.
u/VeggieChick_ · 4 pointsr/veganrecipes

Hi! This recipe is found on my blog at https://veggiechick.com/olive-tapenade/

Olive Tapenade

  • 1 (10-ounce) jar pitted green olives, drained
  • 1 (10-ounce) jar pitted kalamata olives, drained
  • 1/2 cup chopped sun-dried tomatoes (I prefer to use dried,. If using sun-dried tomatoes from can soaked in olive oil, drain oil first and rinse with water)
  • 1/4 cup chopped fresh parsley
  • 3 garlic cloves, minced
  • 2 tablespoons capers
  • 1 teaspoon lemon zest
  • 2 tablespoons fresh lemon juice
  • 1 tablespoon extra virgin olive oil
  • 1 teaspoon maple syrup*, optional
  • 1 tablespoon nutritional yeast, optional

    INSTRUCTIONS

  1. Add all ingredients to a food processor. Process until blended. You might have to stop once and stir with a large spoon and blend again. Serve.
  2. Store in an airtight container. Lasts for 2-3 days in the fridge. Make 2 cups or 8 (1/4 cup servings).

    NOTES

  • Zest the lemon before squeezing for juice. I like to use this zester.
  • Adding a tiny bit (just 1 teaspoon or less) of maple syrup balances the sour taste from the olives and lemon juice. If you prefer it more sour, you can leave the maple syrup out. Or add it in later if needed, after taste testing.
  • A food processor is the best way to make this tapenade. I’ve tried a blender and it gets stuck and won’t spin as easily as a food processor. It could be possible, but it’s going to require more effort.
  • Feel free to experiment with different types of olives. If you have a olive bar at your nearby supermarket, you can get creative. Just be sure to pit the olives before adding to the food processor!

u/nice_tie · 3 pointsr/keto

You can do it! And when you get even 1/4 of the way there, you'll feel like a different, healthier, more mobile person. It's amazing.

Enough motivational drivel. To your question, I'd first advise to not worry about cravings until you're through keto flu. It's hard enough to not eat carbs. Don't make it harder by trying to starve yourself as well. EAT. ENJOY SO MUCH BACON. This will not last long and will most likely reduce your lifespan less in this time than being overweight long-term will.

You will also probably have cheat days. Don't judge yourself for them. It was actually kind of eye-opening to go back and forth a bit and feel the difference in my health very tangibly.

My fave foods that I used in the beginning (and a few subsequent falls from grace) were:

Drinks:

I try to drink lots of water. Water gets really boring. Unfortunately, most of the sugar-ish drinks you find have artificial sweeteners in them. I know that these sweeteners aren't great, but I don't think they're as terrible as some folks believe. I drink them anyway, but I try to minimize my intake.

  • SodaStream - This bastard is indispensible for me. I use it all the time, but I love drinking plain seltzer. You can also add...

  • Sugar Free Syrup or Sugar Free Lemonade - When I do get a bad craving for a sweet drink, these are my favorites. You can add the lemonade powder to regular water. The soda...not so much.

  • Coke Zero - Again, I try to limit these, but they're a solid replacement for Coke.

  • Coffee & Tea - It's coffee tea. By this point in your life, you probably know if it's your thing or not, so if you like it, drink a lot more now. Just use heavy whipping cream or half and half as a creamer, as milk has a lot of sugar. Adding stevia is...okay. I usually just drink it black.

    Meals & Snacks:

  • FatHead Crackers/Nachos - Crikey these are good. I would eat these when not on keto. They're good alone, dipped in salsa, baked with nacho toppings (shredded chicken, black olives, guacamole). Top them with pepperoni and cheese to make little mini pizza-crackers. Or you could have...

  • FatHead Pizza - This is also worthy of a crikey. The crust doesn't taste exactly like bread per se, but it's fantastic. Top however you would a pizza. Make your own sauce, as a lot of the store bought brands have too much sugar.

  • Pizza Sauce - This is a simple sauce that tastes pretty good. It's fairly easy to modify ratios and tweak ingredients to match your tastes.

  • Low Carb Tortillas - I generally can't taste the difference because mine are filled with delicious taco fixins.

  • Cookies - Cookies. Nuff said.

  • Pork rind crusted chicken nuggets - These are legit. I was doubtful of the breading, but I was pleased in the end.

  • Weird, not-ramen replacement - I love ramen almost as much as I love my children. To replace it, I make this abomination. I don't really measure, but I'll give rough estimates. Also, please don't judge me.

    • Asparagus stir fry - An entire bag is 10.5 carbs. I usually eat half.
    • 2 eggs
    • 2T Peanut butter
    • 1T Soy sauce
    • 1 - 2T Heavy whipping cream (or more to achieve desired consistency or nutrient content)
    • 1/2 - 1t chicken bouillon
    • 1/4t - 1/2t Onion Powder - I'm guessing wildly at this amount. I just shake it a few times
    • 1/4t - 1/2t Garlic powder - Same as above
    • A few shakes of Fish sauce

  1. Add frozen veggies to water and turn on stove, set eggs aside.

  2. Mix remaining ingredients in a bowl

  3. When water boils, add eggs and poach to desired consistency (boiling for 3 min gets you soft-medium boiled consistency)

  4. Carefully drain the water from the pan without busting the eggs. You don't have to get all of the water, as it can add

  5. Pour veggies and eggs into the bowl and mix with the sauce.

    Misc:

  • Bob's Red Mill - God bless Bob. He should be a patron saint of keto. He has all the flours. See below.

  • Bob's almond flour, Bob's coconut flour. This is basically all you need. No Hindu crickets required. You can get fancy later when you're feeling better and want to branch out.

  • Pork rinds - They're weird and taste like I imagine a football would, or...a piece of rawhide. But I use these for breading sometimes (they're surprisingly good when soaked in delicious avocado or coconut oil). I also occasionally eat these to make my craving for chips, or rather, entire appetite go away.

  • Avocado - The best fruit/berry ever. They're good by themselves. You can also make delicious ice cream with them. And of course, there's guacamole for the FatHead Crackers/Nachos above.

Okay. I'm tired now and have to work tomorrow. I'll try to come back and add more useful things. Good luck!

Edit: Links & formatting. Also, In my tired state, I almost forgot to add fat bombs. Look up lots of recipes. It's a huge help to be able to eat delicious chocolatey, doughy things.

I have these chia seeds on my list! It's a 2-lb bag of black Chia seeds which are not just used for toys and gardens anymore!

I am a recent vegetarian and these things are super versatile and awesome, so the reason I want them is easy: because they taste good, they last forever, and are calorie and nutrient dense!

As far as what I plan to do with them, I will probably use them to fortify baked goods, make chia puddings, and use them in smoothies and protein shakes for a little extra boost!

u/sbslater · 3 pointsr/Fitness

Try Chia Seeds in a glass of water. They are super filling, I have heard that they are really good for you, and they are less than 50 calories.

Mix the Chia seeds in water and let sit for 15 minutes. They turn into a thick gelatinous drink that should quiet the stomach grumbles for a while.

Xanthan gum. It's expensive, but a little goes a long way, and if you keep it sealed and refrigerated, it keeps for a long time. Xanthan gum is a stabilizer and thickening agent. A small amount will lend body to the beverage without making it seem thick, and it will suspend oil soluble compounds such as cannabinoids.

This oil + this salt + these kernels = Movie Theater Butter. The Flavacol makes a HUGE difference.

u/toplessbooks · 3 pointsr/vegetarianketo

Following the recipe above, without any toppings, each serving costs me about $1.45 - which for a lunch I do not think is bad at all. With two tablespoons of Peanut Butter as a topping, which is what I have been doing, it ups the cost to about $1.75 a meal. - but yes 75% of that cost is the hemp seeds

  • $0.10 in coconut milk (for 1/3 a cup of coconut milk)
  • $1.12 in hemp hearts (1/4 a cup of hemp hearts)
  • $0.04 in chia seeds (1/2 tablespoon of chia seeds)
  • $0.06 in Swerve (1 teaspoon of swerve)
  • $0.07 in Vanilla (1/4 teaspoon of vanilla)

  • $0.29 in peanut butter (two tablespoons)

updated to include specific measurements I use for each serving as opposed to the whole recipe which is how I determined the cost.

RedCon1 has their MRE and MRE Lite which offer good protein sources, complex carbs and some good fats...

She could probably cut that serving size in half and be golden. Most reviews give all the flavors excellent reviews.

They also have a version with only a few grams of carbs...https://redcon1.com/collections/meal-replacement/products/mre-lite-meal-replacement

Altnernately, you could just stick with a protein powder of your choice and get some oat powder for the carbs...https://www.amazon.com/Muscle-Feast-Oat-Powder-Pounds/dp/B008QHPVO4/ref=sr_1_1_a_it?ie=UTF8&qid=1520886850&sr=8-1&keywords=oat+powder

u/Winterwitchcraft · 3 pointsr/vegan

The reason they found it expensive is because they looked for easy replacements for their Standard American Diet Foods.
If you get a box of corndogs for $6 every month, then find it's the same price for half as many vegan corn dogs, you're gonna have a hard time. If you want junk food, think onion rings or tater tots instead, which are $2-3 for a huge bag.
If you are used to getting a Krispy Creme dozen for $10, finding a single vegan donut costing $3.50 is going to shock you. Instead, buy a box of Oreos for $3.

A lot of vegans will just be like "expensive? lolol rice and beans." But no one (or most people) don't want to eat bland sadness every day. As a new vegan, you just don't understand the "accidentally" vegan foods. You don't know the cheap vegan. You just know that Daiya Cheese costs more than regular cheese- I totally get that.

Easy cheap vegan meals:
Biscuits and gravy (Bisquick is vegan.)
Pancakes (Again, Bisquick. Also maple syrup and margarine.)
Burrito (rice, beans, the vegan beef I mentioned above, gauc/salsa/fake sour cream/corn/onions or wtf ever you like on burrito.)
Spaghetti + garlic bread (use margarine instead of butter, that's it.)
PB+J
Grain bowls (they are super easy and cheap and have a million varieties, you'll find one to your taste.)
Curries (use tofu instead of chicken. Simply Balanced by Target has a few different good, cheap vegan curry sauces if you don't like to make your own.)
Tofu scramble (tons of different varieties if you google for recipes.)
Falafel (almost all falafel mixes are vegan.)
Salad (Italian dressing is usually vegan. Bac'n Pieces are vegan.)
Veggie stir fries
Pesto pasta
Oatmeal (top with nuts, PB, fruit, cinnamon, maple syrup, raisins, whatever.)
Pasta salad, omit the salami/pepperoni.
potato salad, vegannaise instead of mayo.
Anything you can imagine with potatoes + sweet potatoes - grilled, hashbrowns, fries, hassleback, baked, tots, mashed.
Smoothies (vegan flavored protein powder is more expensive than whey, I know. But soy and pea protein isolate are very cheap. Add plain protein, banana, ice, plant milk, peanut butter, cocoa powder and sweetener/sugar.)
Chili
Caramel rice cakes topped with coconut/almond reddi-whip and nuts.

Here's some more outside of the box but cheap meals:
Jackfruit pulled pork (I just use slowcooked jackfruit and storebought BBQ sauce.)
Fried plantains
Fried zucchini
Tempura veggies
Baked acorn or butternut squash with margarine + brown sugar
Zucchini fritters (there's recipes everywhere and they're amazing.)
Chow mein
Pan fried bean sprouts
Chia pudding
Ceviche omit the shrimp/fish
Roasted eggplant
Mujaddara
Mushroom shawarma

Plant milk is more expensive than cow's milk, but you can make cheap-ass oatmillk at home*. There's tons of baking egg replacers (banana, applesauce, etc,) but I highly recommend flax egg** for some easy omega-3s.

Got mine on Amazon for like $8. You use it by the pinch so that should be a few year's worth.

u/tfunk19 · 2 pointsr/ketorecipes

You might also want to try Xanthan gum. It acts as a gluten replacement that binds ingredients together. I’m about 4 wks in and just started playing with it, it’s kind of amazing. Just google it and do a little research and it’ll start making sense where it would work in recipes (thickens soups and gravies like a rue) smoothes out ice cream so it’s not icey, binds baked goods and stuff with flours. It can be pricey but I found this on amazon. Good luck https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B0014UH7J2?psc=1&ref=yo_pop_mb_pd_title

Ingredients

  • 1 ½ cup heavy cream
  • 4 oz. unsweetened bakers chocolate
  • Liquid stevia to taste

    Instructions

  1. Heat up heavy cream until almost boiling in the microwave or on the stove.
  2. Take out of the microwave (be careful it will be hot).
  3. Break the unsweetened bakers chocolate into several pieces.
  4. Add to heated cream.
  5. Let it sit for a couple of minutes.
  6. Whisk until chocolate is fully melted and combined with cream. Be patient it will come together.
  7. Add liquid stevia to taste.
  8. Pour into popsicle molds, put into the freezer for 2-3 hours or until frozen completely.
  9. To remove from molds, run the molds under hot tap water. Be sure not to get water in the fudgesicle.
u/ttttori · 2 pointsr/EatCheapAndHealthy

I mix liquid stevia in with plain fat-free Fage greek yogurt. 1 cup serving is 130cal, 9g carb, 9g sugar, & 23g protein. 1/2 is more than filling, so 4.5g of sugar is pretty decent. Generally, I'll top it with a pinch or two of pumpkin pie spice and half a banana. If you live near a Costco, they sell big 6 cup containers of Fage for $6-7. Also, the Walden Farms chocolate syrup is pretty decent and has 0 calories/sugar/etc.

Edit - this is the liquid stevia I use. This will last you ages.

u/Brandeez0 · 2 pointsr/CasualConversation

The sugar craving lasts from 10 to 14 days. Just get through that and you will then be able to figure out where to go next. One thing I did is buy some stevia and start putting it in my coffee or tea or making lemon aid sweetened with stevia. Cutting you sugar intake by half can make a significant impact.

This setup will last you forever, you'll get sick of popcorn before you get through any of these. You do need to season the popper, just follow the directions. Its a metal pot after all.

My personal was to store the oil in my pantry so it was cool and dark. I had to icecream scoop a giant dollop of it into a cup and microwaved it to be liquid. Then you pop the popcorn like usual.

Then I would empty the popcorn into a giant bowl. I would stir it around and use the popcorn salt for about half the time, and then used finely ground Walmart type popcorn table salt.

I used to do that as well, until I discovered powdered oats. In my experience, for smoothies in particular the powdered oats mix really well and don't make the shake so starchy. You have to pay for the convenience obviously, but you can get an 8 pound barrel for $30; MuscleFeast is one I'd highly recommend!

Not many people know that I make a lot of my own products. I don't trust chemicals, so I make most of my own cleaning products. I also make my own toothpaste, body wash, hair and face products, etc. I make a lot of them using coconut oil. It's such an amazing item and it can be used a million different ways. I especially love the toothpaste I make from it. It makes my teeth feel so clean. Another thing I like to do with it is mix in a little sugar to make a lip or face/body scrub. It tastes like frosting. Its SO good. And coconut oil is much healthier than other oils. I dont use any other oils or butter/margarine anymore. It has all been replaced with coconut oil.

Thanks for the contest. Have a beautiful day!!!

u/causalcorrelation · 2 pointsr/ketogains

Not necessarily lifting related, but examining your diet in-depth is the best way to figure out what supps you should spend money on.

My analysis of my own diet suggests I am deficient in vitamin K, vitamin D, vitamin C, and thiamin. I get plenty of omega-3's from my diet.

My top picks for supplements then are vitamin K and vitamin D (I do not go into the sun... death from melanoma in my family). To get more thiamine I've just been trying to eat more pork (beef is not a fantastic source, so I've been trying to expand my horizons a bit... lol). I don't worry about vitamin C.

Vitamin K is not cheap, but vitamin D is. It's easy to get vitamin K from greens if you like rabbit food... I do not.

For lifting, creatine hasn't helped me much so far, but I did gain a lot of (lean) weight when I started taking it, and it made me look huge. Creatine is super cheap, too. There are cheap sources of coconut oil out there, just avoid the boutique buzzwords like "extra virgin." I bought this stuff.

u/kennufs · 2 pointsr/keto

You can get a gallon jar of coconut oil on Amazon for $20 delivered. I keep meaning to but this...

u/Mach10X · 2 pointsr/abv

You can cook a coconut oil extraction on a stove top on very low heat, but you have to watch it closely and stir very often. Consider making a double boiler, put a small pot into a big pot with simmering water. A slowcooker is just a safe way to prevent overheating the oil, though I would strongly recommend getting one not just for ABV but for cooking in general, especially for turning cheap cuts of meat from tough and terrible into mouthwateringly delicious.

Go to a heathfood or vitamin store like GNC and get some soy lecithin, grind up the ABV by hand if you have to or with a coffee grinder, mix coconut oil, ABV powder and lecithin in the small pot, put that into the bigger pot with water that is barely boiling or even a step down from boiling so it's too hot to keep your hand in but not yet boiling. Let it sit for 2 hours heating, stirring and topping off water after about an hour. Remove from the heat and let it cool, pop it in the freezer for at least 2 hours. Repeat the heat and freeze steps at least one more time.

You can substitute propylene glycol or vegetable glycerine if you can't find lecithin, you can even put nothing extra in but it wont be as potent. You can even forego the grinding and still get a good result, but if you have access to a freezer please do freeze it as it makes a huge difference. Heat > freeze > heat > freeze, it really helps release all the goodies as the freezer makes ice crystals that shreds the ABV on the cellular level.

Once you have your coconut oil (you can use cheap coconut oil, I use this stuff: http://amzn.com/B00A2A88ZW ), I also add in a few drops of lemongrass oil, some believe the myrcene in it helps with potency, even if that's bull it still helps make it smell better and helps with any burps you get eating the oil not tasting like ass. If you're the type that tends to get gas from eating ABV you can help a bit by pouring the hot oil through a cheese cloth lined wire mesh strainer, you'll have to go slow and help force the oil through with a rubber spatula or something like that since the oil will start to filter through very slowly.

Here is the recipe and source this video is derived from: https://www.wholesomeyum.com/recipes/low-carb-bagels-with-almond-flour-keto-gluten-free-5-ingredients/

INGREDIENTS

*Click on the underlined text below to buy ingredients!

  1. Preheat the oven to 400 degrees F. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. Stir together the almond flour and baking powder. Set aside.
  3. Combine the shredded mozzarella and cubed cream cheese in a large bowl. Microwave for 2 minutes, stirring halfway through. Stir again at the end until well incorporated. (If you don't want to use the microwave, heat the cheeses in a double broiler on the stove over low heat, stirring frequently, until completely melted and easy to stir.)
  4. Stir the flour mixture and eggs into the melted cheese mixture. Working quickly while the cheese is still hot, knead with your hands until a dough forms. The dough will be very sticky, but keep kneading and squeezing through your fingers for a few minutes. If the dough becomes hard before fully mixed, is too difficult to mix, or is still sticky after a couple minutes, you can microwave/reheat for 15-20 seconds to soften it. In that case, wash your hands and knead again.
NOTES:a) It's very important for the dough to be completely uniform before proceeding to the next step. You shouldn't have pieces of cheese separate from areas of almond flour.
    b) If you want to use a food processor or stand mixer, or if you have trouble with sticky dough, please check the tips in the post above!
  5. Divide the dough into 6 parts. Form/roll a long log with each part, then press the ends together to make a bagel shape on the lined baking sheet. Repeat with the remaining dough. If using sesame seeds, sprinkle them over the bagels and gently press into the dough. (You can also use everything seasoning for everything bagels.)
  6. Bake for 10-14 minutes, until the bagels are firm and golden.

The cheapest I found thus far is on Amazon.

$34.99 w/free shipping for a 5lb bag is not too shabby.

I was thinking of just making my own using Costco's almonds. It's $12.99 for a 3lb bag. But, it's a lot of work to make your own.

I bought it online through Amazon: here. I can't seem to find any large bags of almond flour at Fry's or Safeway (just the small bags of Red Mills stuff) but I hear that Trader Joe's carries a couple varieties of all sorts of flour - including coconut.

And I will ASSUME that you have NEVER SET FOOT on a farm and have NO IDEA how it works. Your second paragraph referenced grain-fed beef. Which is exactly what I talked about. But I forget the lack of fats can cause . . . mental issues . . . with hard-core vegans

As to the grass-fed beef, that is why you need to buy it. Switch demand from one to the other = increased production of one, decreased in the other. And who said dairy MILK? If you are using generic one-to-others I can do so as well. So I am considering it on calories alone. not product. Plus almonds are used in more than just milk.

I buy bobs redmill. Stores can sell it for a nice markup, i buy in bulk from amazon. I would "subscribe and save" so I can take an additional 15% off (since I get lots of consumables from Amazon).

Keep in mind, when I make a batch of Macarons I use 115 g of almond meal. So one of these bags makes quite a few batches.

u/serio1337 · 1 pointr/keto

I live in Arizona. I was able to get Bob's Red Mill almond "meal" (finely ground) at Fry's, it's almond flour, it's very finely ground without the almond "skin". It was pricey though, 1 lb for 10-11 bucks. It's not nearly as gritty as almond meal, which is mostly ground up almonds with the skin.

After using Bob's Red Mill i'm not sure I'd use anything else when making holy grail pizza...now I just need to make some almond flour pancakes.

This is the flour I use, I posted the link so you can see the packaging. If your grocery store has a gluten free section, look there. If not, check the baking ailse. It is usually up high or down low (i.e. in the non-premium areas that are always filled with the junk).

u/stega_megasaurus · 1 pointr/running

You can't go wrong with chia seeds . You may have heard of them and they generally get positive reviews for their high nutritional content but less so for their hydrophiliac properties. I would have similar problems with my long runs when I first started running - but chia seems to really moderate and control things if I take it right before I go out.

u/lermp · 1 pointr/keto

Look into KIND bars if you have them available. A few of them are Keto friendly and have the benefit of having little in the way of process crap in them.

I love making chia seed pudding the night before. It's super quick and easy. They have a nice mild nutty flavor to them. All you need are storage containers, a measuring cup, and a measuring spoon. Oh and your ingredients of course. You can also make them in mass a few nights before.

The base ingredients are 3 tbsp of chia seeds and 1/2 a cup of unsweetened almond milk. You can substitute a different low carb milk alternative or even a protein shake. I use this Costco shake when I want a more protein heavy meal. You can use protein powders if you'd like. And that's just for the base. You can add nuts, a couple berries, stevia, peanut butter, cocoa powder, etc. There are tons of recipes online on how to augment it.

Macro's for the Chia and Almond Milk base mentioned above:

Cal: 175
Fat: 11.2g
Carb: 2g net (14.2 carb - 12.2 fiber)
Prot: 5.5g

Macro's for just 3 tbsp chia seeds:

Cal:160
Fat: 10g
Carb 2g net (14 carb - 12 fiber)
Prot: 5g

You can add more liquid if you want as well, or less chia seeds. Chia seeds can absorb 9 times their weight in liquid. You can do 3 tbsp to 1 cup or more if you want. It all depends on what consistency you like. Also the longer they soak the more jelly like they turn.

And it's pretty cheap in my mind. This 2 lbs bag is only $10 on amazon. If you use 3 tbsp per meal, that's about 25 meals worth of seed. Or $0.40 per meal. You'll have to add the cost of the liquid to it as well. But there's nothing stopping you from adding water to them instead.

u/jevausie · 1 pointr/Random_Acts_Of_Amazon

Have you looked into Soylent? (Not a joke, despite the name.) It's the first 100% complete food replacement. My friend drinks this as a supplement to smaller meals to get all her required nutrition, but you can also just drink this exclusively and not eat. Crazy, right?! In smaller amounts it adds a healthy dose of all the vitamins & minerals you need to a health shake.

Spirulina powder is also really excellent for you and contains a lot of protein.

Chia seeds are so good for you and add a pleasant texture to smoothies & such!

Kale - fresh or powdered is so good for you and honestly does NOT add a nasty veggie taste to otherwise sweet drinks! Same with carrots. It can be especially good with blueberries or blackberries, and carrots are good with strawberries and apples.

Hope this helps!

I drink a ton of tea and try to keep from drinking calories. I like it in liquid form best. It goes a lot farther (a few drops sweetens a cup of tea), and it doesn't have to dissolve since it's already liquid.

How to make delicious homemade home-style popcorn:

  • Pour oil (peanut, canola, or vegetable) in a pot about 1/8" deep and crank the heat
  • Pour popcorn kernels in until covering the bottom of the pot (but not piled on top of each other)
  • Place lid on pot slightly ajar to allow steam to escape
  • If popcorn is getting too high in your pot, remove the lid and place in your sink (you do not want your popcorn touching the watery condensation from the steam) and allow popcorn to spill over if need be
  • Turn off heat as soon as the popping slows/stops and pour popcorn into large bowl
  • Melt butter (as little or as much as you want) in the still hot pan (pro-tip: use the butter knife to cut the chunk in half again and again to speed melting
  • When butter is bubbling it is ready.
  • Pour half of the butter over your popcorn. Add regular table salt. Gently stir popcorn with butter knife. Pour remaining half of butter and add salt, stir again.

How to make delicious theater-style popcorn at home:

  • Pour popcorn popping oil (either butter-flavored oil or coconut oil in a pot about 1/4" deep and crank the heat
  • Pour popcorn kernels in until covering the bottom of the pot (but not piled on top of each other)
  • Add a coating of Flavacol butter-flavored salt into the pot (careful, you can add more later if not salty enough)
  • For topping you can use butter (as descibed above, but push the pat of butter around the bottom to pot to gather up the flavacol salt left behind) or you can use the popping oil as a topping, or a combination of both. I prefer the butter, although the oil by itself or the combination is probably closer to what the theaters use.

Well, it totally depends on why you're replacing whey and what your protein requirements are. Whey has a lot more protein than hemp, pound for pound, but that's because hemp also has tons of good fats in it (with omega 3/6/9). This one is good if you're feeling adventurous again. However, it's not powder, so you'll have to blend it. But this is just the pure stuff, no fillers, no flavoring etc. Add this with some frozen fruit and chia seeds/flax seeds in a blender and you got yourself a delicious smoothie.

u/samwich41 · 1 pointr/veganketo

Yeah I just read about it. I think it’s great and the calorie to dollar ratio isn’t that bad.

Then you’re only really paying about a dollar for 270 calories.

If you buy a 18oz bottle of olive oil for $7, then for every dollar you get around 550 calories (110calories/tbsp).

So in other words it’s twice as expensive as olive oil, but you get a bunch of protein too.

Or if you're lazy you can buy a gainer powder mix which is easy calories, but those are usually less nutritionally dense and the taste might not be as good.

Cacao powder is made from cocoa beans. Y'know, the stuff chocolate is made from. It's a superfood that gives the oatmeal (or whatever it's mixed in - it's good in coffee too) a nice chocolate taste. The fact that it's so healthy shouldn't be surprising since dark chocolate has health benefits (dark chocolate has more of it than milk chocolate).

> Like chocolate, cacao powder contains flavonoids, which are known to help lower blood pressure and improve blood flow to the brain and heart. With fewer than 15 calories per tablespoon and containing almost no fat, cacao provides a strong chocolate flavor without the guilt. “For someone who has a chocolate tooth and is looking for heart or circulation benefits, it’s a good call,” says Dawn Jackson Blatner, a registered dietitian.

I use it every time I shower. As soon as I get out of the shower and dry my face I splash a few drops on my hands. Then I rub my hands together and then massage it into my face and let it absorb in. It will rehydrate your face after you shower and keep it healthy. The antibacterial properties really help with acne. I also stopped using soaps or any chemicals in my face of any kind. These products tend to dry up and irritate the skin which leads to natural oil imbalances and acne. I literally dealt with acne for 10 years before discovering this. Recipe by Navitas Naturals. Follow the link or look at my substitutions in case you don't have one of the ingredients or are making one serving.

1 Cup Water

1 Tbsp Mesquite Powder (Navitas discontinued theirs, and although I have never tried it, I have found Sunfood is a great brand equal in taste and quality).

3 Tbsp Cacao powder. (Instead of nibs. I don't usually keep these around anyway since most of my raw baking requires Cacao powder).

2 ice cubes

2 TBSP Chocolate Protein Powder (or any whey and casein-free option). I used Healthforce Nutritionals Warrior Food Extreme Chocolate Plus.

1½ Bananas (peeled and chopped). I used one banana, plus half of a frozen one to thicken and make the smoothie extra cold.

Sprinkle of cinnamon

This morning I made this as my breakfast. I wanted something different from my usual green smoothie and mesquite was begging to be used.

The top layer was frothy like a latte and the cinnamon complemented the chocolate so well. The smoothie/shake kept me full for quite a while! This may also make a decent pre/post workout smoothie, as Mesquite powder is a decent source of protein, calcium, and iron, essential for the recovery of muscles. Also, in abundance of zinc, why not support the health of your memory, skin, and eyes at the same time?

Stevia in my tea is great! The liquid stuff. Powdered stevia isn't so great.
