I've flown with my grown corgi on six different flights now, ranging from 1 to 6-hours all underseat in cabin. Most airlines seem fairly restrictive, so I've only used southwest (only $95 each way) and choose the middle seat with a Sherpa Large carrier; haven't run into any issues so far. Everyone has been really nice and let me open up the carrier in flight so she can pop her head out.

For reference she's about 27 lbs 10" at withers and 22" long - with that carrier she is able to stand up and turn around while under the seat which is pretty spacious. Again I've only used the middle seat because it has the most space though window and aisle would work as well but look more cramped.

My chihuahua uses this. It’s not very stylish but it doubles as a bed when I put a blanket in it. My pup loves it, and occasionally sleep in it even when he’s not travelling!

While I'm definitely pro-seat covers and use one for my dog, I'm actually going to caution you away from one in your situation. I'm a child seat tech, and most child seat manufacturers strongly recommend you do not put anything between the child seat and the bench seat. There are a few exceptions (I think some Britax seats and some Graco seats), but I would definitely check your child seat manual. Even though it seems like a little thing, it could possibly change your child seat dynamics in a crash, and would likely void your child seat warranty.

For your pup, you could still use a single seat cover like those designed for the front seat. A bonus would be that that type wouldn't restrict your center shoulder belt or any of the buckles.

Sincerely hope that didn't come off as preachy; I just wanted to bring up something you may not have thought about already. I hope you find something that works well for you!

I have the hammock you linked. It works pretty well, but I only attach one side to the front seats, and fold the back seats down (hatchback) since my dog needs a little more room than the back seat. There are also door covers that might help keep the door trim from getting scratched up, though I don't have those. The dings and scratches from my dog have all come from his toenails. Keep them as short as practical, and use a dremel for trimming instead of clippers, since clippers can leave sharp edges. You might want to toss some cleaner in your trunk to wipe up any slobber or noseprints, and keep a towel/paper towels in the trunk in case of dirty feet/unexpected mud. It can be really hard to get hair from short-coated dogs out of the headliner but if you put on a heavy-duty rubber glove - the kind for washing dishes & stuff - and brush the liner with your hand that will help the hair ball up so you can vacuum it out.

u/bparsonage · 5 pointsr/weightroom

A better idea might be what we used to do with my dog. We bought what was essentially a saddle bag and we'd put our water bottles in it. Probably weighed 10-15 pounds at the beginning of the hike. Worked out well because as he got more tired the bag would get lighter from us drinking the water.

Edit: like this.

u/ryafur · 5 pointsr/PetMice

I have only flown puppies myself. Check with the airlines you want to fly with before buying the tickets, see if they allow them in a very secure caging as a carry on pet. There might be a fee and it might depend on what they consider 'small pet'. That is a short flight, so provide water before you leave home and then as soon as you get to your location (~3-5 hr.). I'd offer some stiff food like biscuits or blocks to nibble on that isn't too crumbly or small like seeds. Check with what bedding the airlines allow as well. You might want to toss in a toy or two or a paperboard tube to distract them or for them to hide in. Planes are loud and scary to most animals.

Note: don't show them off in the airport or plane, keep things subtle and on the down low. Most of the general public does not share our love of rodents and it might spark fear, controversy, or even worse things in the wrong person.

They make small pet carriers by Kaytee/ Super Pet like 'Take Me Home' (wired travel cage) and 'Come Along' (soft mesh travel carrier). The latter is certainly the most appropriate and subtle, and some pictures show using both together for security (can't chew out) and privacy. You might have to hunt the internet or stores for them. Hagen makes a Living World carrier that is hard sided [https://www.amazon.com/Living-World-Carrier-Purple-Grey/dp/B006JVPL6W/ref=sr_1_1?s=pet-supplies&ie=UTF8&qid=1491533314&sr=1-1&keywords=small+animal+carrier -as an example, not an endorsement]. I'd add a strap for support on that one, just so it doesn't pop open, and carry it by the base not the handles. Nothing worse than a cage coming apart feet above the ground and even worse when on the go. Finally, make sure it will fit under the seat of the airline chosen, some have little room as it is. Good luck!

I use this for my front seat: https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B01GDGGC6A/. Easy to take on and off to accommodate four and two-legged passengers up front. Stays secure even with a rambunctious pup. If you add a dog bed or pad for long road trips that is made of water resistant or waterproof material, it will likely have trouble staying put on top of the cover. Solved with adding a blanket in between.

I'm eyeing this one for the rear seats: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0767D2499/. I like the option to have bench and hammock style. It also doubles as a rear seat back protector when seats are folded down.

Yeah, pet backpacks are a thing.

God Speed, SpaceCat!

u/borkshireterrier · 4 pointsr/Yorkies

I'd focus less on brand for stuff like toys and brushes, it matters more for things like dog food.

I love oven baked tradition dog food for small breeds and I get it through global pet foods. My dog used to not want to eat and then I switched him to that and he was suddenly a good eater.

For treats I use Crumps' Naturals Mini Trainers Freeze Dried Beef Liver but any freeze dried liver or organ meat works great. Sometimes I just boil chicken and dice it up small and use that as a treat.

I recommend using a harness where the lead clips through rungs near the harness clasp so that if the clasp comes undone your dog will still be attached to the leash. Never use a harness that uses Velcro to close, I learned that the hard way.

https://www.amazon.ca/Pawtitas-Adjustable-Reflective-ajustable-R%C3%A9fl%C3%A9chissant/dp/B00OBX3EKK/ref=sr_1_6?keywords=small+dog+harness&qid=1574183227&s=pet-supplies&sr=1-6

I use a car seat like this one https://www.amazon.ca/Kurgo-Rover-Booster-Seat-Tether/dp/B004699SHW/ref=sr_1_27?keywords=car+seat&qid=1574183135&s=pet-supplies&sr=1-27 not sure what the safety rating is but it keeps my lil guy from trying to crawl into my lap when I'm driving.

Please don't add a bell to your dog's collar. Dogs have much better hearing than humans and the bell would be so close to their ears. If you are worried about your dog getting lost make sure they have a tag on their collar with your address+phone number and make sure they are micro chipped.

I used to take my Shih Tsu everywhere on my scooter in a front pack, like This. Usually short trips, but once did a trip of more than 200 miles in one day. It's important to keep their head tucked inside the bag. If there's any chance they will want have head out, be sure you put Doggles on the dog to protect eyes.

Yep! Collapsible crate. It’s a bit worn out, Amazon tells me I bought it in September 2015, and it’s been all around the country w/ us, but it’s held up well and enough room for Red who stands 32” at his shoulder and was almost 90lbs when he retired. Here’s the exact one,

Noz2Noz 669 N2 Sof-Krate Indoor/Outdoor Pet Home, 42 inches, for Pets up to 90lbs https://www.amazon.com/dp/B000P9ZFEM/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_.l7GDbHGCJJK1

u/bruxbuddies · 3 pointsr/RATS

Good for you for giving them a good home! Yes, you can bathe your rats, and it sounds like that would be a good idea. Here is info on bathing them http://www.dapper.com.au/articles.htm#bath. You may want to wait a couple of days or so before bathing them, unless they are absolutely caked with waste and it's causing sores, because the move alone will be very stressful. Bathing them is also stressful, although they will get over it fairly quickly. Make sure their room is extra warm and that they have lots of warm fleece in their hides, since they'll be pretty chilly afterwards.

As long as the cardboard is thick and/or it's not a long drive, a cardboard box for transport should be fine. Be careful because some rats can chew very quickly through cardboard. If it's a long drive I would try to purchase a small carrier for the transport, and put their hide and a small towel in there.

Good luck!

I know timbuk2 has a bag specifically for carrying dogs and it's rated up to 20lbs (9kg) but i'd look at the dimensions to make sure it'd fit your dog.

I have a similar style for my chihuahua (4.6#) and he isn’t a huge fan, but he tolerates it better than the plastic kennel types. I have this one: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01N32SR0V

I carry two large house cats (one is 12 pounds, the other 14) in this on my scooter to the vet. They're unfazed, don't hate the carrier, and have no issues with the scooter.

Side streets only, and very careful, but not bad.

I've tried most of the ones that others have commented on and I settled with this one: 4Knines Rear Bench Seat Waterproof Non-Slip Cover with Hammock. Seriously the best thing ever. The non-slip coating on the back keeps it in place, the hammock piece that clips up to the front passenger seats keeps my boy from jumping up front or getting my front seats dirty. I have the same thing for my front passenger seat too just incase I have him up there with me. 4Knines Fitted Bucket Seat Non-Slip Cover. One thing that I like about this brand over others I tried is that the covers have flaps that go down and actually cover the side of the seat too. Especially helpful in the back seat to make sure fur and stuff doesn't get everywhere.

I also invested in these handy little things. NAC&ZAC Waterproof Pet Car Door Cover They keep my boy from scuffing up my doors with his giant paws.

Let's see, what else. Oh, I got the cargo net for holding leashes and doggie bags. Genuine Subaru F551SFJ100 Cargo Net, Rear I also keep window cleaner and dash cleaner in there to clean up dog sneeze goo and slobber.

I've got this one: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07CMZ11TX/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o09__o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

It's been awesome so far and my doggo loves it. It fits perfectly in the WRX and has "anchors" underneath that slide in between the seats to keep the whole thing from sliding around on top of your seats.

There are a number of other decent looking ones on Amazon that also have great reviews, but this one I can definitely vouch for :)

u/rdfiii · 3 pointsr/cavaliers

This is the carrier we used to fly Brisket from San Antonio to Philadelphia https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0002YHWAU/ref=od_aui_detailpages00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

He was around 18lbs/13 months at the time and couldnt stand up 100% but could crouch or comfortably lay down. Hes pretty much the same size now, maybe 1.5lbs heavier. I have heard some attendants will allow you to bring it up on your lap, but ours was adamant that it stay at our feet. It zips on top so we would unzip it halfway so we could pet him. I think he was put off by the vibrations of the plane, so he just sorta laid down. We put chews in there for him and he chewed a little, but mostly just put his head down and waited for it to be over.

Depending on the disposition of your cavalier your experience may vary. Brisket almost never barks (unless playing with our other cav) and is very laid back, so we had it easy with him. Now with our new guy I dont know what we are going to do but hes like the tasmanian devil. Good luck!

We got this one, https://www.amazon.com/dp/B000UTA1G4/ref=twister_B074MZ9LGR?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1 , for our GP mainly because it was cheap and had somewhat decent reviews. We didn't want to spend $80 on a pack he wouldn't ware. We did a couple of dry runs around the house and then on shorter hikes (less than 4 hrs total) with no issues. It's a great beginner pack, but can be a bit of a pain to adjust the straps because of the fur. It holds his collapsible water bowl, two 1L nalgene bottles, and poop bags. I think we will probably end up getting a nicer one that is easier to adjust when this one bites the dust. The best part of the pack IMO, he can carry his own poop bags 12 miles :)

u/Clumsyflipperfeet · 2 pointsr/childfree

If it were not already a lost cause, a seat protector and containment screen like this (https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01JONT9AK/ref=psdc_3024183011_t1_B01HDQCU74) can be bought for pretty cheap. Will be on my short-list with PetTurf for my brick patio before 65+ pound hound joins my household.

u/dil27guy · 2 pointsr/teslamotors

I have this and it works great. The bottom is rubber mesh that keeps it in place and it folds up to fit in the frunk perfectly. Doesn’t protect the doors though, so I keep towels around and of course need to do some serious windexing now and then.

u/akhirnya · 2 pointsr/parrots

I personally like this carrier. Because it has bars on the side, I can attach food/water dishes (the ones it comes with aren't great) and perches. My vet loves it. It doesn't have a tray under it, so I put down a towel on the bottom in case water spills. It closes securely. I can wrap the lap part of the seat belt around it and it stays in place. I normally cover the half of the cage on the window side, not that it can see out, but to keep the light/heat off my bird. It can be difficult for my parrot to see out, though. I also have one of these which is great because it collapses. It's kind of big - I used to transport a pair of GCCs in it and it could serve as an overnight cage. It's kind of easy for the door to open, so I normally have a bit of velcro holding it shut at extra (it's never opened on me, I just worry about it when things are jostling around to/from car and buildings). This carrier does have a tray under it, so I line it with paper towels and if any water spills it isn't a big deal.

Having done lots of long drives with a couple different parrots, I think the most important thing is that the bird can see its person. I always have normal food, treats, and water in there for them.

u/DeathsArrow · 2 pointsr/pugs

We use a harness and a seat like this one: https://www.amazon.com/Solvit-Tagalong-Booster-Seat-Medium/dp/B003F76Y6E/ref=sr_1_7?s=pet-supplies&ie=UTF8&qid=1487611972&sr=1-7&keywords=dog+car+seat

It gives them a good view of what's going on but is secure so they can't run around the back. Make sure you have a harness on them to clip into the seat. Any harness will do.

u/MapleMayhem · 2 pointsr/XVcrosstrek

Seconded! We bought this cover, it works great. My only issue is I want to replace the velcro seat belt pull thrus with zippers. My dog vomits, ALOT. Vomit + velcro= awful. It's machine washable in a front loader machine.

u/Pinkhoo · 2 pointsr/dogs

Make sure she has a harness (not just a collar!) that is attached to a seatbelt clip. I have spent so many hours trying to figure out how to get two puppies home soon and this seems like the best answer for a restless small) medium dog.

Your dog might be hard to fit into a harness, but that's what she needs. If she's too small to fit her in a harness, get a soft sided carrier that you can buckle in.

I bought the carrier below to get my "big" small dogs home. You might need to look at a few choices to keep your pupper safe.

You are a good person for caring about this. So many people just let their dogs flail around without thinking about what their dog would look like going through a windshield.

Just don’t roll down the window when they’re in place otherwise they’ll fly out (assuming you’re like me and don’t want a piece of Velcro stuck to the door to keep it in place)

u/fndrplayer13 · 2 pointsr/TeslaLounge

I have this Orvis dog seat cover that I saw recommended many times on Tesla Motor Club. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B013W0N0S8?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share it fits the model 3 perfectly and creates a nice little box in your car for the dog almost. The headrest straps don’t interfere with your head or neck at all. One thing is if you want to have 3 people and a dog in the car it’s kind of hard to use.

I also got these to protect the doors: NAC&ZAC Pet Car Door Protection... https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00AEB7FOY?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share

Oh yea that quilting is probably a hair magnet. I didn't want to spring for the ruffwear because my dogs are 50/50 crates or on the seats. I have this or something similar and it's good. It even stays up without the hooks around the head rests

u/t-poke · 2 pointsr/teslamotors

Dog owners - how do you protect your doors? I just installed these in my 3, but when my windows roll up after closing the door, they push those cards up with them, leaving them barely hanging in there.

u/freckled_porcelain · 2 pointsr/cockatiel

I have two cages for my 'tiel. One for the main room we spend time in (office) and one for sleeping/travel. Tiels tend to have night terrors and are better off sleeping in a smaller, wider, sparsely decorated cage.

I ordered this one in large for him. Perfect for week long trips. He's stayed in a hotel for a couple days with us in that cage. Might work well for your living room cage.

u/theprimeministr · 2 pointsr/FocusST

Firstly, cute dog!

My doggo is currently not allowed in my car, but we have this cover for my girlfriend's car and it stays put very well. The underside has little rubber grippy dots that hold well to the leather seats, there are elastic loops that go around both the front and rear headrests, elastic on the corners that you can use to secure the corners to the rear seat uppers, and extra long straps that velcro which would allow for securing along the bottom of a seat if it was possible. It's not possible in her car, but we manage to tuck some of the excess fabric in between the seat and the sides of the car and it holds tight. Also, there are some padded flaps that are tucked into the rear seats between the bottom and the upper that very securely hold the cover in place. It honestly hardly moves once it's installed.

For door panels, we purchased these but haven't technically used them yet. I imagine it would work fine, and I know it will fit in the FoST (tested it). But it would require applying a little velcro to the door panel if you wanted to get a more secure fit.

As for biting the seat cover, we haven't had that problem with our pup because we spent a lot of time training her on what she is and is not allowed to chew right when we got her (I read a lot about this and was worried she was gonna destroy everything so I was extra prepared, lol). I would recommend throwing a chew toy in the seat with her so she will have something that she enjoys and can chew on while she's in the car. If she's not searching for something to chew on, then you will be able to worry less about her chewing on the seat cover.

I can't comment on how to keep the fur from getting everywhere, though, and this is the main reason why I haven't let my pup ride in my car yet. She sheds like crazy and fur flies everywhere when we open the windows while driving.

Call me obsessive but I ordered the following items to protect the backseat. This is what it looks like:
https://i.imgur.com/HotX31j.jpg

I lay this extender on the backseat first. It fills the gap and allows my dog to utilize the entire backseat space:

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07PR25321/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o05_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

I then put this soft hammock above so I can further contain him by zipping up the sides:

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07PMMQD5M/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o07_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Finally these protect the doors. I use the plastic inserts but I had to cut them shorter because they wouldn't insert all the way in:

I need a carrier for my cat. We take her places with us and she doesn't have one and she gets scared easily in the car. She has an appointment to get spayed and get her shots in a few weeks and she has to have a carrier for that.

u/Runenmeister · 1 pointr/Greyhounds

Get one of these for your backseat and let the dog have the back seat. It's fantastic. It comes with a couple leashes where one end is a seatbelt clip. He can't fall into the floor this way and has padding across the whole backseat. Plus it's waterproof. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07CMZ11TX

Also get him a harness (chest-attach area) like this and seatbelt him in, either with the above or with this one's carabiner. Helps give him an anchor and keeps him safer. Keeps him away from you a bit better too, distracting you is the #1 safety factor.

I think you may be right about the associations. Fergus doesn't mind getting in the car cause I take him to work 2-3 times a week, to the park for long walks at least 3 times a week and doggy daycare on Friday. That way outweighs the Groomers & Vets visits and he loves those places.

Maybe some trips to the park and sweeten the deal with some treats on the ride over and she'll start to look at it more favorably.

I also bought him this car seat which lets him stand up on the window and look out the front. Sometimes dogs get antsy cause they know they are moving and can't see.

We had to buy a larger carrier to accomodate our Maine Coon, so we got this suitcase looking thing, so ours can't do that any more. It has straps to carry it like a backpack, a rolling attachment (like for a carry on suitcase) and several handles so it can be carried different ways. It's kinda like this one, but not the same model exactly.

I actually went into <insert regional grocery store name> with him in that carrier once to drop off a prescription. No one noticed until I pointed him out to our acquaintance at the pharmacy (the prescription was for him, and why I had him with me).

[For my green cheek I bought] (https://www.petco.com/shop/en/petcostore/product/reptile/reptile-habitats-and-enclosures/imagitarium-medium-reptile-pet-keeper-aquarium) and then drilled 2 small holes on either side and put in a small piece of stick on the bottom for him to stand on.

[I've also seen people use] (https://www.amazon.com/Living-World-Carrier-Purple-Grey/dp/B006JVPL6W/ref=sr_1_14?keywords=Pet+carrier+small&qid=1562380210&s=gateway&sr=8-14) and they even sell it at my local bird store for birds. You just have to put something in there for him to hold on to.

You can even buy a plastic storage container and drill holes in it. That's what I did for my very first bird travel container. The most important thing is that whatever you get is secure and doesn't come open easily. You want the lid to latch or lock on somehow. Then make sure there's air supply. And finally, make sure he's got something to hold on to. If you can (especially if it's a long trip), add water supply. If you can't, always add fruits for water for your bird (grapes, oranges, etc).

Maybe you can find those large crate. And put a small litter box in a corner inside. Or just take several blanket and if the cat pee on one, you change it for a clean one ...

Yep! Collapsible crate. It’s a bit worn out, Amazon tells me I bought it in September 2015, and it’s been all around the country w/ us, but it’s held up well and enough room for Red who stands 32” at his shoulder and was almost 90lbs when he retired. Here’s the exact one,

Well, I have an all leather premium and my daughter has the micro-suede. Both have held up just fine with the husky. Just need to clean it.

Oh, and if you have the back cup holders, make sure to check for drool. Just from the dog park to home, she can fill them up halfway.

You can also get this.

Yep. I've been looking to buy one of these for my new cats who we yoinked off the street so we can keep them sociable and outgoing and happy to be travelling/outdoors. I believe it's this model, which is made to either be open with the cat hooked in (like the video), or with the top zipped it acts more like a cat carrier where you don't have to hook them in, but they can feel a little more freedom with the extra windows. Texens makes a few carriers like this and I'm honestly super undecided between them, they seem to be well-reviewed, nice look and quality, etc. I know this one has popped up on reddit a few times. I'm planning on asking for/splurging on one for Christmas this year!

I got these for the drool, not thrashing, but does the same thing. Holds on via plastic holders wedged between the glass and door panel (or velcro adhesive if you prefer), and I haven't had any issues with them staying in place.

u/WingedGeek · 1 pointr/flying

I have two, the biggest is this one: https://www.amazon.com/Noz2Noz-669-Sof-Krate-Indoor-Outdoor/dp/B000P9ZFEM It fills every available inch in the back of a mid-body Mooney with the rear seatbacks removed; I'm pretty sure it wouldn't fit in the back of the DA40. But if it did, those pups could squeeze in for a couple of hours traveling.

My dogs are never crated (but I know them). The only other time I flew with an unsecured dog who wasn't mine, it was a Mastiff puppy in the back of a short-body Mooney with a non-removable rear seat/seatback, and any sort of crate would have been impossible. He was super-chill though.

u/Gigitygig · 1 pointr/dogs

Yup. We have a 60lb and a 35lb. They both go in the back together. I used to buy one by Outward Bound and they would last 12-18 months. I just got this one a few weeks ago and I like it a lot more.

u/ShitandRainbows · 1 pointr/jeepdogs

I use this one.

I love it. It’s also a booster seat, you adjust the height so they can see out of the window and windshield. It comes with a seatbelt teacher that you can attach your dogs harness so they can’t jump/fall out. The lining and cushioning comes out super easy so you can wash it.
I’ve had it for years and even with my doors off most of the time, I have zero concern he will fall out. It’s really easy to put in and take out too, but I usually leave it in unless I have a passenger.
My little guy is 11lbs and has plenty of room to lay down in it also. Honestly can’t recommend it enough.

car came out without a scratch. Except a little drool on the back of the drivers seat :)

u/bb-h8te · 1 pointr/cats

My cat also howls in his carrier. You might consider a harness and a dog/cat car seat. It's basically just an open box that straps to the seat and has a tether to hold them in. My little buddy is almost 16 and greatly prefers it to being crated.

mine is similar to this

u/pulchritudinouser · 1 pointr/Hawaii

Another vote for Alaskan. They also accept the soft sided carriers which are obviously a little more flexible. I used this one

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0002YHWAU/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1

19” L x 11.75” W x 11.5” H

(It actually exceeded Alaskan rules by quite a bit but they didn't say anything. I did research the specific aircraft to make sure it would fit under the seat, which it did).

and these are the Alaskan rules:

Kennel size chart for travel in cabin: Hard-sided 17" x 11" x 7.5"

Soft-sided 17" x 11" x 9.5"

I use thispet seat cover from Amazon. It straps to both front and back seat head rest. However, i took off the back seat head rest off because it blocks my view when i need to drive in reverse. So i use the rear seat belts to strap on the pet seat cover.
