For people actually wanting a solution, pick up some roller blade wheels for desk chairs. Traversing cords and climbing edges of rugs is a problem of the past for me.

https://www.amazon.com/Rollerblade-Replacement-Casters-Hardwood-Rolling/dp/B076CRCKNT

u/Reverent · 13 pointsr/BuyItForLife

Every couple months this comes up, and my answer is always the same (copy pastaed from the last couple of times)

picture of the door (also yes, the color is ugly, but I'll repaint it at some point).

You can do what I do.

Door Table! All you do is buy a door, buy some adjustable legs, a screw-in keyboard tray if you feel like it, and screw those motherfuckers together!

Advantages

  • It's a stable table. You got a solid core wood door. None of that hollow core cheap shit. I can stand on mine if I want (and I am a pretty goddamn big guy).

  • You can make it whatever height or size you want. Want it to be half the size? They can and will cut it down to size for you at the hardware store. Want it to be twice as high? Adjust those legs whatever size you want! That's why they're adjustable!

  • Dirt fucking simple to make. Some hardware stores might even do the work for you in the store. All you have to do is predrill the screw holes and screw the legs in. That is really it is to it. Took me about two hours on mine, and I don't do any kind of handyman work.

  • It's a massive table (if you don't cut it down). It's more of a work bench then a table. If you look at the picture, I have room for my dual screen monitor setup with room to spare. If I need to work on a separate project, I just glide to the left on my office chair.

  • It's modular. Need to move it? Unscrew the legs from the mounting bracket, you're done! Need drawers, just buy some ones on wheels you can slide under it. Need a keyboard bracket, just buy one and screw it. Want cable management? It's just wood! Drill a hole!

    Parts

    Door

Door - $66. Note that this one does not have a finish coat, the one I bought did (it's pretty easy to paint, or find one that has a basic weather coat). Can't see anything in america (my one was made in australia).

edit: same door with white primer

Obviously, you'd have to pay for the entire door even if you do cut it down. That being said, it already has a finish coat, and for the quality of the wood (and the fact it is already in a table shape) it is worth the $66.

    legs

Ikea GERTON adjustable leg * 4 - $25 each, for $100. Amazon also has a heap of legs, but your mileage may vary (example)

if you are going to cut it down to half the size (or less) you can use these half-diameter legs and save some space/money:
    http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/30264301/

    accessories

And that's about it! You can add a fifth leg if you want the extra support, but you don't need it. All that is left is a keyboard tray, like this.

Once you're all said in done, for a couple hours of work, you will have an extremely sturdy and customizable desk. It's also hell of a lot cheaper to do then to buy a premade desk.

For those of you that don't want to fork out $$ for a new chair, I got this seat and back cushion on amazon and its awesome, made it feel like a brand new chair, gives great support, and it has held up for over a year now without issue. I got it on sale for like $25 but im sure there are other brands that are cheaper (it's currently $37) and just as good! My only gripe with it is that the straps that hold the back cushion up don't tighten enough and it slides down and needs quite a lot of adjusting every time I stand up or move pressure off of it.

u/Hunyuk1968 · 9 pointsr/starcitizen

I have these. You can get them here

You can replace the casters with scooter wheels which is what I did: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B06XB6FYQX/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_2CRYBbZXJC9Z1

Hear me out: a foot swing for the airplane. I do some brutal long hauls for work but don’t usually get to choose the airline I have status on, so stuck in coach for 12-16 hours frequently.

The foot swing is basically a thin padded cushion with straps that buckle. You put it around the arms of the tray table and then put your feet or legs on the cushion. It’s been a game changer for me, it was cheap, and it doesn’t weigh munch. I am 10x more comfortable when trying to sleep using this thing.

Do you absolutely need wheels on your office chair? I ordered some of these

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00OGVBI5U/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o01_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
(there are also high profile ones if you want instead)

and these

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001WAK5Y8/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

mostly so my chair would stop rolling backwards when I was playing sim racers with my wheel and pedals. It just so happens now I don't have to worry about rolling over my rift cable or my dog either ;)

u/DrDisastor · 3 pointsr/buildapc

I bought a Herman Miller Aeron (big and tall version) on some auction site years ago. The hype is real. I put these on it and it glides like butter and is really comfortable. The full retail is high but I will vouch for the quality and comfort as a tall man.

u/spcjns · 3 pointsr/Conures

Birds love destroying keyboards I've found. I just dont let my conure on my keyboard. Whenever she goes on it I just move her. I have one of these those, so that makes it easier. https://www.amazon.com/Fellowes-Office-Underdesk-Keyboard-9140303/dp/B0002LD0ZY

Most of the short folks I've worked with have a footrest under their desk, or use a chair with a foot ring.

The other thing that would be smart is for you to have your own cameras. You can get them on Amazon. Or you can order them from a retailer's website and pick them up at the store so you don't have to have them mailed to the house.

The other thing you can do is get one of these for your bedroom door. https://smile.amazon.com/Master-Lock-Security-Adjustable-White/dp/B0002YUX8I/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&qid=1539553114&sr=8-4&keywords=door+stopper I have seen them at Target. Or, there is thishttps://smile.amazon.com/Home-Premium-Rubber-Door-Stopper/dp/B01NGYKARV/ref=sr_1_5?ie=UTF8&qid=1539553114&sr=8-5&keywords=door+stopper. It won't work as well to block the door from the outside, but is cheaper and not as visible and easier to hide. A deadbolt would be best, but N's kinda resent that.

u/BitchPlzzz · 2 pointsr/wls

I drive a lot and I experienced the same thing. Sitting for prolonged periods destroys my back and tail bone now. I think it’s because I have less natural padding. I got this pillow set from Amazon and it was like magic how well it worked. 12+ hours of driving with no breaks and no pain. It’s made of some kind of gel so it holds its shape very well; no smushing down into a useless pancake even after 12 hours.

u/brokeinvestor · 2 pointsr/simracing

Thanks for replies. Would this work?
http://www.amazon.com/Replacement-Office-Chair-Caster-Wheels/dp/B00HVK8GGC

Im worried the material on the wheels is not ideal so it slides through my floor.

u/oakeytee · 2 pointsr/blogsnark

Sure, I got this one: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01M35M87O/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_jH3VCb72A5PPR

The strap and buckle seem a little flimsy, it probably won't last forever, but I've used it on 3 round trip flights so far and no issues. The foot part is really comfy foam.

u/CardoXP · 2 pointsr/battlestations

I do the same thing. This helped out so much keeping my wall clean. This one if you go shoe-less when at your desk.

u/NovaThePug · 2 pointsr/simracing

Buy seat cushions for the chair, it goes a long way. I'd buy a good one to sit on and an ok one for my back to lean on.
Eg:
butt cushion
[back cushion] (https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07FTBF9CD/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_AOc4DbBQQV265)

u/dgzenten · 2 pointsr/pilonidalcyst

Sounds good! Yeah I'll make sure to not be a total potato. Definitely going to up to veggies, fruits and protein during recovery and ask all the questions I can.

Also [ordered this memory foam thingy] (https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07JQ2V33Q) since I work from home from the computer. Hopefully sitting during class won't be too rough. I appreciate all the advice :) definitely feeling a lot better about this

u/_Coffeebot · 2 pointsr/bapcsalescanada

Something like this: https://www.amazon.ca/dp/B06Y4BJ66G/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_WbxSDb7F0M00R

I haven’t actually tried those ones though. Basically they make the chair just glide - a little too well sometimes.

u/lollipoppipop · 2 pointsr/internetparents

4’ 11” here. I second the footrest. This is the one I have. I would also put my feet up on the chair because it hurt my legs to sit back until I realized how much it was affecting my posture.

u/FubsyGamr · 2 pointsr/sysadmin

I finally have a thread I can contribute to. I have a whole set of tools, but none of them fit in a bag:

  • Keyboard & Mouse
  • Monitor for bigger display space
  • Wireless charger for my phone
  • Favorite coffee cup
  • Headphones
  • Foot rest swivel thingie - my work hands these out, and it's actually super comfy and helps with desk posture
  • Bottle of whiskey on the desk, just in case

But seriously, how many sysadmins carry random cables and flash drives these days? Wouldn't that fall to someone like a NOC technician or something?
u/Rivkariver · 2 pointsr/Wishlist

Congratulations!

I have found that office chair pillows really save my back. If you don’t already have one, you could celebrate your new job by getting a comfortable cushion suited to you. I just linked the first on Amazon, but I think it’s a good idea to get something that will keep you from having pain from sitting in the same place a long time. Makes the whole day easier.

IKEA has some nice table tops that you can customize with legs or cabinets. You could buy a under table keyboard pull out like this or whichever would suit your preference.

u/Elrox · 2 pointsr/simracing

Buy a couple of these locking caster replacements. You should only have to replace 2 of the wheels to stop movement but more is usually better (its a set of 5). Much easier than messing about with cups.

The foot rest is a game changer for me personally. I’m 5’9” and with my chair leaning back my feet didn’t touch the ground. This fixed that, plus it is really nice and cushy. I got one used for like $25 on amazon. It looks white in the pics but the one I got was gray. I spray painted it white to match my setup.

You could look for something like this.

https://www.amazon.ca/SERFPAD-TV-TRAY-Portable-Keyboard/dp/B00E031L88

I am not sure how comfortable they are, but it seems like it would be useful for your situation.

Alternatively you could just use a tablet insert from an old dresser or something, just lay it on your lap and put your keyboard mouse pad+mouse on it.

If course you would need wireless mouse and keyboard unless you are very very close to your tv.

u/sonsofaureus · 1 pointr/AskBattlestations

How about just change the wheels on the chair?

u/LanSukasa · 1 pointr/Gamingcirclejerk

"but muh Big Picture mode! a PC can be console-like! see!?" I tried doing PC gaming on the big screen multiple times. Playing a game that requires a controller works just as well as it does on a console, but if it requires a mouse & keyboard, it becomes a nightmare. There are trays/lapboards made specifically to make it easier, but they're stupidly expensive. Seventy-fucking-dollars for what is basically a plastic board with a mousepad stitched onto it.

u/AstroFlyer686k · 1 pointr/xboxone

I have had this one for about 2 years: https://www.amazon.com/Rocker-Pedestal-Video-Wireless-Bluetooth/dp/B01EVOOAAG/ref=olp_product_details?_encoding=UTF8&me=

I chose a fabric model because the vinyl will peel and crack over time like on an office chair. I would highly recommend some sort of seat cushion because the chair has very little cushion in the seat. But with a seat cushion, it is very comfortable and I can sit for 4-5 hours of XBox gaming no problem.

This is what I use: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01I76ELYO/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

I'm sure there are newer versions of the chair available...just get a fabric one instead of vinyl. It will last longer.

So basically it's a cheap way to cram everything into a small space and still have it usable.

The JDXI is sitting on 2 IKEA Laptop stands which get it up enough to put either the beatstep in front or my launchkey49 if I need that. Only downside is it puts it at a little too steep on an angle for my liking and with the mixer that's there it's too close to the headphone jack so some knobs are not optimally placed. (currently using my old belkin iPod recording dock as a mixer since I packed my actual mixer away during the last move and can't find it for the life of me.)

I made the Volca stand from some scrap wood I had after making my drum kit riser. It's not expert carpentry by any means but it works.

The keystep is tucked away on a pullout computer keyboard tray I got off Amazon.

The mixer and mininova are on a clamp on multi-tier laptop stand I also got off Amazon.

I can also thank Amazon for the cheapo "monitors" and headphones which actually have great sound quality for being under $200 altogether. For what I need in this temporary apartment, they get the job done.

Also notice most of it isn't plugged in, as the baby finds cluttered cables irresistible and rips everything off the desk. (Hence the now permanent "baby jail" surrounding my entire setup.) More for her safety than anything since she likes to use the drums as a jungle gym and has whacked her head on it without learning it is solid and unforgiving.

Hope this is what you were looking for!

I had an issue with my office chair on hard wood as well, the wheels are easy to change, I picked up a set from amazon, https://www.amazon.ca/Rollerblade-Replacement-Protecting-Mastery-Mart/dp/B06Y4BJ66G made moving the chair virtually silent and will cause less damage to the floor as a bonus.

I have a plastic bin under my desk that I rest my feet on most of the time, but I like my feet up high. My feet dangle too (like you mentioned - I have to keep my chair high enough that I can comfortably use the keyboard and mouse). You can find step stools of different sizes at HomeGoods, Marshalls, etc, or Walmart/Target. It doesn't have to be something fancy and expensive. This cushion looks comfy.

Good luck! I know it's a pain. It's something I don't even think about anymore b/c I've had the same set-up for so long, but it was really tough when I was pregnant to find a comfortable solution.
