I use Lyte Balance. It's an electrolyte concentrate, you add a capful to a glass of liquid. 281mg Sodium, 350mg Potassium, 50 mg Magnesium. Taste is fine, I usually say it tastes like tears. The bottle describes how to use it.
For more Magnesium, Natural CALM has 325 mg. I like the Raspberry-Lemon flavor but you can buy sample boxes of 5 flavors. I can't find the assorted box on Amazon without buying a whole display, but I've found it at health food/co-ops before.

There are several different brands of electrolyte mixes that you can bring and mix in with your hydration pack. Liquid IV is a pretty popular brand that's relatively cheaper for how many you get (you can find it at Costco too). I personally like Biosteel.

Get him small things that can mildly improve life in the field. Body Glide - helps with chaffing, good for the feet in boots). NUUN He can put this in his water bottle (?) and rehydrate better. Tactical Carabiner. Really good socks - not sure if coyote green or brown is right, someone here will know. He won't have the time or space for many fun activities so comfort in the field will be a priority. A gift box of comfort would be nice IMO.

Buy a cardboard poster box and take with you. I took a bunch of two dollar bills for tipping throughout the trip. Are you coming in a day early and staying a day after? Highly recommend that. I was also on keto and gave that up eventually because I kept bonking during long hard rides. Now I find oatmeal for breakfast before the ride works for me. During the ride, I take a Clif blok every half hour or so. So I’m not strictly keto anymore, although I still cut down on carbs and do intermittent fasting when I’m not riding.
But, with respect to leg cramps, it’s usually a matter of taking in electrolytes. One that was recommended to me by an avid hiker was Ultima. It’s keto friendly. Right now, I like this. Costco sells it much cheaper but it has carbs.
Rehydration solution -- I use this one -- helps a lot. If you want to make your own, you can mix 1/4 cup white sugar with 1 1/2 teaspoon table salt and 1 tablespoon potassium salt. Typically I'll slam that down right after weighing in and then sip on Gatorade the rest of the day.

I recommend watching this video, at the 9 minute mark there is a graph showing all cause mortality drops rapidly as you approach 4-5 grams sodium, then slowly increases beyond that. So it’s difficult to overdose. Your body should simply excrete the excess sodium.
If you get an electrolyte mix such as NormaLyte it may have 3g of sodium chloride and sodium citrate, but table salt is about 40% sodium. So even that only has ~1.2g sodium. Sports drinks are mostly just sugar water, and don’t really support general health, in my opinion.
Put another way, it would take 12.5g of table salt (over 2 tsp) just to reach the upper end of the ideal range. You could double or triple that and never reach the risk levels caused by low sodium. Salt is safe.
As far as water, I drink around a gallon a day, but there’s a wide range that is probably healthy. If you find pounding water helps your symptoms, it’s fine to drink a lot. If you don’t notice much difference, don’t stress about it too much. I don’t know how scientific it is, but there are water calculators out there.
I figure if I’m on the high end of water consumption, I should be on the high end of electrolytes as well. I made an electrolyte mix based on the Normalyte ratio.. I think it’s in section 2.3 of this doc. I add a few grams of that to my protein shakes, and salt my food aggressively, and I still don’t come near a concerning amount of sodium.

-Pack your bucket with a duplicate of EVERYTHING on you for your first lap. Even down to the same brands, this will ensure you know your gear and can swap out quickly.
-Don't spend longer than 10mins at transition. It is easy to convince yourself to quit.
-Bring medic scissors to cut off socks if you plan to remove them for foot repair.
-Use Darn Tough socks. Since I switched in may I have not had a single blister even in wet conditions. They are cheapest in the festival area depending on how many you buy.
-Walk uphill, run on the straights and downhills.
-Train long distances and do a mock transition mid way. You will figure out with time what to carry on you. The first time you will carry more than you need, and after a few runs like this you will know the minimum you need to bring to make it though and save energy by not carrying extra stuff.
-Pack gear in a race vest I got the Solomon adv skin 5 and 12. I took both but the 5 is perfect for Ultras. There is a huge difference in carrying your water in a camelpak and wearing your water in a vest.
-Remove your pack to shed weight before obstacle attempts.
EVERYone is different... it depends on your weight, severity of POTS etc. I'll use myself as an example- I have two 2-3 normalyte packets in water a day (https://www.amazon.com/NormaLyte-Rehydration-Salts-Yields-500mL/dp/B01IE8PMDE), I LOVE salt so I add a ton to almost every meal, and on days when I need extra support I'll take a few to several salt sticks. My POTS is mild-moderate, and I am light weight.

This overlaps with a previous comment a bit, and may be way too detailed, but just in case...
When I had this same issue for a long time after a surgery I tried a bunch of things that didn't work, so I decided to focus on getting more out of the liquids I was able to drink. I had good results from products designed for rehydration after sports, illness, or hangovers. But only the healthy ones with no sugar or artificial colors/flavors/sweeteners. Things like Gatorade make it worse with all their sugar (which the body must use more fluid to process fully) and artificial ingredients. Tried Pedialyte too, but same sugar issues, tastes icky, and is too pricey.
The very best were Nuun tablets, which you drop into water. They have lots of different flavors, and have a hint of effervescence at first, so without trying I found I easily drank more overall. Some of the flavors, like grape, fruit punch, or watermelon, I adore because they remind me of yummy childhood drinks that were terribly unhealthy. But the Nuun tablets have natural fruit flavors, and are sweetened with monk fruit, so just healthy stuff. They have lots of electrolytes, and some vitamins/minerals that help your body retain more fluid. I buy them by the box on Amazon, and they have sampler boxes that let you try several flavors first. Many healthier markets carry them too, at a higher cost, so you can try them first Wish they were cheaper in general, but nope. :-(

I also switched to pink salt then, as it has tons of trace minerals (needed by the body to fully utilize your fluids), and that helped, surprisingly. Also just tastes much better! On bad days where I was almost fainting, I would take a mouthful of water and toss back a big pinch of that salt. It reduced the dizziness. But after that I began using the nuun tablets, which helped all around.
I ate as many juicy foods as I could then, like citrus, cucumbers, melon, lettuce, apples and pears. But I could barely eat at the time, so it wasn't enough by itself.
Switch to a really high quality multivitamin too, especially if your hair is falling out (mine did too). Avoid gummy vitamins, cheap stuff from the drug store, and brands known to source unregulated ingredients from China (like the NOW brand).
I hated the smell of my tap water which didn't help with drinking (and my city had good water), so I learned to fill a couple pitchers and leave them sitting out, uncovered, for 24 hours, which allowed all of the chlorine to evaporate.uch better then.
Oh, kind of random, but I also started keeping the mini cans of V8 tomato juice on hand (regular kind, not the low sodium). Normally I don't like it much. But when I was so dehydrated, it tasted sooooo good for some reason. Probably I just needed the salt to help me better retain fluids, but the extra dose of veggies probably helped too.

I never liked G2 or Powerade Zero. Always thought they had that weird diet aftertaste. I use Nuun tablets in water to replenish electrolytes. I found out about them when I was looking for a low-carb alternative to Gatorade to replace electrolytes and saw that a lot of cyclists swear by it (I'm not a cyclist but I do dehydrate easily).

You can ask your doc to measure your heart rate and blood pressure while sitting then while standing. If there's a big swing between the two, s/he may diagnose your POTS by that (or do a holter) and let you skip the tilt table since that can be too intense for some. Drink bottled water (Aqua brand), and don't drink tap even if you are at a hotel. Boil the water first. Bring some carbon pills, just in case of disaster (e.g. diarrhea), and one of these oral rehydration packages.
I always tell people who travel to SE Asia (especially Indo) to be a little more careful with what they eat and drink. But eating street food is an experience. Do it, but go easy.

I have struggled with impossibly dry skin since high school. I drink 5-8 bottles of water a day, use cetaphil moisturizer 3x a day, and still struggle. I recently started taking an electrolyte tablet once a day and my skin began to glow! It's supple and the angry spots don't look as angry. I am actually hydrating my skin for once! WOO!

The most effective way would be to simply stop having children. Barring that, we would have to cut consumption greatly.
It's definitely possible to minimize energy and resource consumption through arcologies (live/shop where you work), permaculture or aquaponics (no runoff, 90% water saved vs soil farming), recycling or reusable materials (permanent plastic cup vs styrofoam), low hanging fruit (stop drinking bottled water, shipping it when you already have clean piped water - stop shipping soda, just ship a tablet that dissolves, etc...)

I've had the exact same thing happen to me before. In fact, I had a panic attack after taking just 100mg magnesium glycinate--along with heart palpitations, just like you described.
I wonder if it might have something to do with electrolytes (of which magnesium is one)? I've recently started taking this product and feeling more energetic as a result. But my incident with mag glycinate was a long time ago, so I don't know if there's a direct connection.

My calorie goal is based on my TDEE (Total Daily Energy Expended) and adjusted an extra 300 calories for breastfeeding (so 2000 calories total is what I burn based on BFing and activity level). My goal is to hit 1700 calories a day and exercise 45-60 minutes 5x/week. Doing this I am at a guaranteed 300 deficit from BFing and then an additional deficit from exercising. I alternate between running (usually with the double stroller) and HIIT. I started this at 6 weeks PP and was back down to prepreg weight by 4 months PP (I gained 27lbs). I get that this isn’t doable for a lot of women. I am fortunate that I really enjoy exercise. YMMV and don’t beat yourself up if it takes awhile to lose the weight.

Lunch is 1oz of cheese, 1 oz summer sausage, and 10-15 almonds.
The simplicity of the morning routine (make egg, cut cheese and meat for lunch, coffee in mug) is easy for me to do whether I have to work at 8am or 4pm, and fills me up surprisingly well-- I almost never get hungry before 6pm.
Bonus, the mostly/high fat intake early in the day sets me up for a pretty flexible feeling dinner. I try to put everything in MFP before I cook it though, just to check. Last night was cauliflower rice and spinach, with blue cheese sprinkled on top, and some leftover flank steak. It was really good.

Hi there! We seem to be pretty similar - also Cat 3 lady with 90g of protein a day. First - fish oil will have no carbs in it. For electrolytes, I ordered this, which has none, or you can use lite salt or Powerade zero (or equivalent).
For carbs, you're going to want to keep them under 20g (not counting fiber, like with keto) and fats also under 20 grams. Lower is always better, if you can manage it, and spreading carbs out throughout the day will prevent spikes. I messed this up by eating a container of pico de gallo for dinner last night, and felt weird for an hour but nothing too crazy.
Keep in mind that this is, very much, a type of fast. You aren't going to feel satiated, but it will work. My personal favorites for food are:

I'm not gonna lie, this diet is very boring. Others may have better ideas - I know my husband has concocted some crazy curry that meets his macros, but it always ends up being more than I'm allowed to eat all day (he's a significantly bigger person than me in all directions). When I have really felt the keto flu, I have taken Nuun electrolyte tablets which work well for me. I take the original ones which are <1g carbs per tablet (the newer ones are 4 g carbs per tablet and use Stevia instead of artificial sweeteners, and are certfied vegan). I don't take these everyday, only when I fail to consume enough electrolytes in my diet and start to really feel the effects.

When you start getting the killer CRAMPS on your feet or calf muscle - you need to start doing electrolytes. Sodium, potassium, magnesium.
I make homemade gatorade with regular salt + NOSALT (potassium chloride) mixed 50/50.Pick up a Calcium + Magnesium supplement and MOAR Potassium tabs.
Recipe:
Sugarfree drank mix. Anything from Rasberry tea to the ENERGY types with vitamins and stuff.
About 1/2 a teaspoon TOTAL of reg salt + NOSALT mixed. Balance the salty with the drank mix.
Take 1 Calcium tab + 2 Mags and 2-3 potassium with breakfast.
PROTIP; When you feel that nasty cramp in your calf, RAISE YOUR TOES UP . Stops it cold. Then drank some salt , mebbe some broth, whatever.
EASY WAY (but pricey for what it is): NUNN or similar brand Hydration tabs. Just plop one in your water bottle and go.
Nuun is another option.
Powerade Zero is almost no potassium or sodium. I've never had an issue with magnesium personally.
You can also mix your own rehydration mix, though I can't remember the proportions of salt to sodium citrate and potassium. I'd say it is somewhere around 3:3:1 salt/sodium citrate/potassium. You can use sodium bicarbonate instead of citrate, but I don't like the taste.
I know this one... I struggle to stay hydrated even when I'm not hung over. Go on amazon and buy some oral hydration salts... It doesn't taste great, but they work wonders!

So, an old boyfriend broke his back skiing. Luckily he had me to take care of him, but if he didn't, here's what I would have recommended.
Take advantage of any grocery delivery you can get where you live, and splurge for the pre-prepped ingredients if you can find them for the first month or so. A package of prechopped mirepoix, some cubed sweet potatoes, spinach, beans, seasonings and broth in a big pot with make a huge batch of hearty and filling soup.
Breakfast idea: Prechopped fruit, separated into baggies and frozen. See if you can get someone to come over and prep these for you by divvying up the fruit in bags, it can be a labor intensive process but worth it to get a stash of smoothies in the freezer. Add greens, protein powder, milk of your choice (I like coconut milk for the shelf stable quality) and blend. Keeping your protein intake high by drinking meals is easiest right now.
Clean your blender the easy way: fill with warm soapy water and blend, then rinse. Standing at the sink doing dishes is going to be very hard for a bit.
Search pinterest for "dump dinners", these are the "set it and forget it" of slow cooker meals. Things like add + prechopped veg + a bottle of some kind of sauce and you're set to serve a hot yummy batch meal over rice, with a mixed greens, etc.

You could also look into a homemade or store bought version of the World Health Organization's oral rehydration solution. The trick is to have some glucose in the mix. Nuun didn't work for me.

I've been using these, I like tablets because there's no liquid restriction issues when flying, they taste quite reasonable, and I could feel the beneficial effects quite quickly.
I have a kidney condition where I waste electrolytes, my body just doesn't recognize them as a good thing to have (thanks, genetics!). I'm taking medication for it, which I think I have to increase to balance the sweating, so that won't be much help to you, but I also mix a Vega electrolyte powder into my 16oz water bottle and drink half before and half during class. Personally I hit the salt plain, I don't mix it. Little gross but you could do either one.
Black coffee, as in no additions/creamer/sugar is fine. I hate it personally but it helps immensely with hunger control lol.
If you're worried about calories in electrolyte powder I'd just buy something like this that has 0 calories. Personally I wouldn't even go searching for something 0 calories as all the ones I've seen have 0-25 calories and you need I believe 40 calories or more to break a fast.
It'll do in a pinch but I'm a big fan of Ultima Powder. Pickle Juice works too when you're getting crampy from exercise and need to hydrate.

Damn, that's a long day in the saddle. Hope no rain that day! I had a couple friends do the 100K at Carrabassett last month, and they had to deal with a hour long downpour about an hour after starting that turned lots of the grass into goopy mud.
My Dr. told me that without having kidney disease or some similar issue that it's not even possible to develop hyperkalemia from food. Your kidneys will take care of excess potassium. With Spironolactone, the main thing to worry about is dehydration. Make sure to drink plenty of water but not too much water as that can lower your sodium. Keep something like nunn electrolyte tablets on hand for that. Also, pickles are awesome.

People with POTS generally need a MUCH higher salt and electrolyte intake. When a POTS person drinks too much water without salt it goes through your system quickly which can cause an imbalance with your bodies electrolytes which will make your symptoms much worse. You may want to check with a doctor before drastically increasing your salt intake if you have certain health issues (such as kidney problems).
A few good sources of electrolytes are pedialyte (or generic, easy to find but on the expensive side), electrolyte powder or tablets (I’ve found the best prices on amazon).

Mesh jacket, avoid black. I wore a Joe Rocket Phoenix in grey last summer, never got much above 43-ish, but 85-95% humidity is common here, I'd much rather have a few degrees hotter if it were dry. Sucks when you're stopped, sucks when you're going a bit less. White and/or silver would have been better than grey and black, but that's not exactly rocket surgery to figure out.
You're going to be pouring sweat, so hydration is a must. CamelBak it up, and get some electrolyte tabs to help keep your salt levels up. I like those because they're reasonably lightly flavored, and low on calories. I find em more refreshing than something like Gatorade.

Maybe my issue wasn't with electrolytes as is was only 48 hours, maybe I drank too much water.
Also, the electrolytes I listed were from one tablet, to get to the levels you take would mean taking about 615 tablets (they come in a pack of 20). Are these tablets no good?
Do you have low blood pressure? I do, and i need electrolytes in my camel pack on my rides.

You can also look at magnesium malatye as a supplement prior to riding.
However these are more if you feel very fatigued or start getting cramps.

I get "nuun" for my hangovers. Its a little disk that you put in a bottle of water and basically becomes sugarfree gatorade. Its easy enough to keep in the house, we use it after hiking / sports as well as hangovers. Easier than keeping full bottles of gatorade. I think there's 8? servings in a tube.
I don't know what electrolyte replacement you're using but you could always try something like powerade zero or a calorie free powder.

You will feel much better at the end of the night because you've maintained proper electrolyte levels.
If you drink alcohol try to alternate between it and a drink with electrolytes. Water will help prevent hangovers, but the electrolytes really keep you up and moving.
Agreed. I think OP should try nailing all the electrolytes in one go with a scoop of this daily
For the rehydration salts... I use RecoverORS. It's expensive for what it is.. but also the best I have found. More hydrating than even Pedialyte and more electrolytes than that and Gatorade or any sports drinks.
The SOL Bivvy weighs only 3.5 oz and packs pretty small. It looks bigger in pics then it is.
My favorite energy bars are Soldier Fuel - 3 year shelf life, ideal balance of protein, fat and carbs, give you TONS of energy, and also some of the best tasting out of all the energy bars (aside from maybe Clif, but those only have like a 6 month shelf life). They were designed originally for soldiers on the field that needed a quick boost (previously HOOAH bars), so you know they are loaded with nutrients, more so than the average bar.. and field tested by soldiers. They also have peanut butter flavor but I'm crazy for the chocolate. I have a problem saving them in my survival packs because I end up eating them as snacks. It's good they come by the case :). But then it's a good idea to actually LIKE the food you put in your survival kits. Nothing like food comfort in a bad situation. It's the little things.
Like I can suffer pretty bad from low blood sugar crashes. One of those things will keep me going for hours.
