Idk about this specific range but the indoor range where I'm a member has it in their rules that you can't pick up brass once it has hit the floor. I think you can keep it from hitting the floor in a bag like this, and I actually was picking up brass there for future use (don't reload yet but never too early to start hoarding, right?) before I noticed that rule. Probably 2-3 times I did it without being told otherwise. Still haven't been accosted for it, but it is in the posted rules so I stopped doing it.

#12 in the rules here

search this question on firearms or ccw. Its been well covered there.

quick answer though:

bulk FMJ for range/target practice. Brand isn't that important. Winchester white box, cci blazer brass, seller and belloit, remington, pmc, Speer lawman, ANY of those brands should be absolutely fine. SOME people like one brand over another in terms of the ammo being "dirtier" (as in, how much carbon residue does it create and thus, how much work will it be cleaning your gun later)

But general shootability, just pick whichever one of those you find a good price on.

Defensive ammo: You want hollow points. They do a better job of stopping the bad guy. They do a better job of NOT overpenetrating, going through the bad guy, and harming other things behind the bad guy.

Top recommended hollow point defensive choices are usually: Federal HST, Hornady Critical Defense, Speer Gold Dot. There are others that are probably fine too, but those three are probably the most recommended. Good chance, whatever police dept near you probably uses one of those three.

DON'Ts:

Do NOT bother with gimmicky high tech, superlight (50 grain) ammo with names like "RIP" or whatever. Its all hype.

Do NOT buy ammunition AT the shooting range, if you can at all help it. Shooting ranges typically have a crazy price markup on their ammo.

DOs:

Do buy your (target) ammo in bulk if you can. 500-100 rounds at a time is where you start to notice the savings.

Do use luckygunner, brickseek, r/gundeals. luckygunner is more of an ammo sales site, while brickseek is an indexer that shows you what current ammo prices are at other retailers.

----------------------------------

Non, ammo related things:

Cleaning: You don't need a lot. A good cleaning solvent, a lube, OR an all in one cleaner/lube combo (rem oil, clp, etc). A brush, a few gun q-tips, a bore snake , some rags or cloths (I like blue shop towels actually) and you're good. You can probably get a decent all in one kit off amazon for <$20. Also recommend a good cleaning mat You don't NEED the mat, but its convenient, keeps oil and scratches off your floor/table, and its like $10, why not? You also don't NEED the gun brand specific mat with YOUR gun diagram on it, but ... come on. Isn't it just a little cooler with it? Yeah, yeah it is.

As cleaning goes, this isn't military inspection. You don't need to scrub her spotless after every shoot. Just mostly wipe it down, get the noticeable carbon build up off, make sure the slide cycles smoothly, and IF anything internal is supposed to be factory shiny, make it shiny again. (specifically, it the feed ramp looks shiny )

Other than that...

Go shoot. A lot. A LOT

And ask questions.

Shooting is just like anything else. Practice a lot and ask for advice is how you get good.

> I’m a young small woman and want a damn way to defend myself.

This is important information, because you weren't born with effective weapons like men and their bigger muscles and bones. Maybe I can help. Although I'm a fairly muscular man with lots of "martial arts" training, I abhor violence, and I don't like even getting close to a combatant, let alone touching them, even with an object. I have far more training than I need to subdue someone larger than me without hurting them, but I don't want to let things get that far, so I have developed strategies that might work for you.

The #1 best strategy is to run. Literally break out running in the most inappropriate times and places, haha. However, that's impractical as your first tool, because you won't realize you're in danger until you're already within grabbing distance. At that short distance, the time it takes to turn around and run just gives the attacker time to get a tighter grip on you, and beat you senseless until you can't defend yourself anymore.

So, you need the #2 best strategy first, pepper spray. If you need it, you need it fast. Don't put it in a purse or pocket. Have it in your hand, ready to go. I travel in very rough areas pretty often, and my size means usually only people with friends, weapons, or larger size will try to harm me. Occasionally there's someone drunk, stupid, or crazy, who breaks those rules. The worst ones go for me, while the not so bad ones will have no fear going for you. You have to be able to handle all of them, and GOOD QUALITY pepper spray faster than a bolt of lightning works better than all my muscles and training, even on the big guys. I recommend this one for its concealability, the stream to avoid accidentally spraying nearby people, and the keyring on it for a lanyard so you can't drop it.

  • 2 UDAP Pepper Spray Blue Hard Case Self Defense Key Chains 736902509296 | eBay
  • AmazonSmile : 10 Pcs Spring Coil Keychain Retractable Plastic Bungee Cord with Key Ring and Plastic P Shape Trigger Hook Theftproof Anti-Lost CurlCord by NUOMI, Stretch to More Than 2 Meters, Black : Office Products

I recommend this one also because it's much more effective, but larger and harder to handle, with no keyring to prevent drops.

  • AmazonSmile : Udap 6MF Mugger Fogger 3.1 Oz : Bear Protection : Sports & Outdoors

I carry both types simultaneously, and I switch my plan ("which will I grab if something happens?") depending on how many people are around that might accidentally get sprayed if I use the big one. The big one is MUCH more effective than the little one, so it's worth it to carry it. However, the lanyard on the little one means I can attach it to a beltloop without worrying I'll lose it if it falls off.

The most important thing I learned is speed. Again, if you need it, you need it fast. So, having a little weak pepper spray constantly and inconspicuously in your hand is more important than having a bigger meaner can you have to fish around in a bag to find it.

Other important things I learned is I suck at aiming, and I usually miss, especially with fast-moving dogs. In fact, I've never successfully hit a dog, probably because I'm genuinely scared when those fangs come out, versus the human that I'm not so scared of because I can handle them physically. When you're scared, you're probably going to miss if you use the little pepper spray canister. The more powerful the spray, the better your odds of hitting them.

The last time I used my little pepper spray on a human, I did not miss, but it was so fast, the guy was stunned at first before he even felt the pain, and I had a chance to run away. Again, speed is everything. After the pain started, this guy started to pursue me, but the head start I had let me reach safety before he could catch me with all that pepper in his eyes.

That's another thing I learned. The fact he pursued means pepper spray is not good enough by itself. You need something meaner as a backup. In training, pepper spray is supposed to be followed by baton (club) blows to the legs. You don't have the muscles or the arm reach to do that at a safe distance and make it as painful as possible, so I'm not sure if carrying a baton is right for you. The temptation for you, lacking strength, would be to aim for the head, and that will definitely work. You will kill them if you hit them in the head with a baton, and then you'll be a killer. If you don't like the idea of somebody's sticky brains on your face, don't use the baton until you can get training to use it correctly without feeling desperate enough to aim for the head. I recommend an ASP P21 baton:

  • ASP P21 baton - Google Search

A good inconspicuous backup or alternative to a baton is one of these, which has no blade so no problems with security:

  • sog powerlock traveler - Google Search
  • Powerlock Traveler - SOG Knives

    In one of these:

  • AmazonSmile : DeSantis City Slicer Coin Purse, Black : Sports & Outdoors

You can stuff the DeSantis City Slicker coin purse in your pants, or in a pocket or purse, and it's reasonably safe to hit someone in the head with it due to the leather padding and flat shape. It's designed for coins, but the multitool is more useful weight, and works better with less strength. The coin purse is actually a better holster for the multitool than the official hoster, because it doesn't stick out far, look weird, and snag on things. Nobody even sees it when I have it in my pocket or pants, because it's so thin, and the wide shape makes it smooths out the outline of the multitool so it disappears.

The multitool has a geared drive which is fantastic for smaller, weaker hands, or for gentle one-handed use. It greatly amplifies your strength, and I have to be careful not crush the crap out of things with it. There is a bit set available with more tools, but that's outside the scope of this comment. It will be useful for you if you need to fix something unexpectedly, so let me know if you want help finding it. Hint: The black oxide version is more expensive than the silvery version, but the silvery version is better despite also being cheaper. It also doesn't look "tactical", like something threatening, if you get the silvery version. The bit set is only available in the black oxide.

A Taser is the next best thing I can think of, but it's horrendously expensive at around $40 per shot. And you only get 1 shot. If you can afford it, I suppose a Taser would work, but you're going to miss without training, and the training is going to be expensive at $40 per shot. Plus, it might not work, especially if you're shooting at a winter coat, or there's more than 1 person attacking you, which is very common. Your backup needs to be as reliable as a baton.

I think being a skilled and somewhat muscular male gives me the luxury of not hurting people who want to hurt me. In your case, I wouldn't look down on you if you had to badly hurt someone to protect yourself. I don't think anyone except gun control activists would look down you.

    I hope that helps.

I use this rod https://www.amazon.com/Gunslick-Handgun-Carbon-Fiber-Cleaning/dp/B001NOVF92

and just some generic bronze brushes like this https://www.amazon.com/Gunslick-Bore-Cleaning-Brush/dp/B004NJC1ME/ref=pd_lpo_200_lp_tr_t_3?_encoding=UTF8&refRID=2PA7VYF9QHZ5KMSS97E3&th=1&psc=1

and use this to send a few pieces of cloth through until they come out clean https://www.amazon.com/Gunslick-Brass-Benchrest-Handgun-Caliber/dp/B004NJDG14/ref=pd_sim_200_4?_encoding=UTF8&pd_rd_i=B004NJDG14&pd_rd_r=9TTKD0XDXN2KSBS2TNRK&pd_rd_w=K2pUv&pd_rd_wg=CIoxr&psc=1&refRID=9TTKD0XDXN2KSBS2TNRK

Basically I just clean the bore after 1000 or so rounds and use a toothpick/cloth to clean the slide channels and lightly oil them. I use M7Pro cleaning stuff and oil just because I can find it at most stores around here and it doesn't smell or irritate my skin. There really is no sense in pulling the trigger and all that stuff out unless it starts sticking or you have run 5k or 10k rounds through it.

Just to cover everything these are the cloth pieces i use too https://www.amazon.com/Professionals-Choice-Cleaning-800-Pack-357-Calibre/dp/B00KJLTONO/ref=sr_1_5?s=sporting-goods&ie=UTF8&qid=1484333214&sr=1-5&keywords=gun+cleaning+patches

He needs a more powerful air rifle to do this humanely. A Red Rider will only injure a chipmunk (like put its eye out). Even a cheap spring piston rifle from Walmart will do the trick.

Edit: something like one of these would be a sweet Father's day gift:

For 1-1.5k you're better off building it and saving a lot of that.

NOTE: everything under here is my opinion, but I used to build these at a very well known shop and have gather some experience over the years.

Basically Google a simple forged upper and lower receiver. Or go to a local shop they may have lowers so you don't have to go through the ffl crap of mailing it.

Once you have the upper and lower look at the kind of barrel you want. I would suggest personally that you spend most of your money on a barrel and optic. So look into some companies that make a good barrel like white oak and compass lake engineering. The reason not to buy one from a company that makes other stuff is that they get really cheap barrel blanks, then flute it, add a nice finish and a muzzle break and sell it for $300 or a little less. After all that crap you realize they started with a $100 barrel blank and you paid all that extra for nothing. So get a heavy contour 1:8 or 1:7 Criterion chrome lined, or steel if you'd like. This is where your accuracy is and its best not to cheap out here. Especially if you want a DMR style rifle. No less than 18" I would suggest, 20" is also really nice for that extra FPS. Rifle length gas system. And get a low profile gas block with it and have it threaded if you want to put a muzzle break on it.

Muzzle device choice is wide. I like the M4-72 severe duty compensator. I've got one now and it's SICK. That or a J-Comp. I wouldn't entertain any other muzzle devices. I suggest the J-comp because it's cheap and really does work. The M4-72 isn't cheap but is the best one on the market hands down.

After the barrel look at a nice optic, a good budget one is vortex strike eagle 1-6x or an SWFA 1-4x. Both $400 or less. I like the SWFA personally because it uses mil dot reticle and turrets. If you can find a mil dot and turret from vortex then that's even better, their warranty from what I hear is amazeballz.

Next you should look at furniture, this is purely subjective to your whims. But note if you get a collapsible stock you need a carbine buffer tube and carbine buffer spring and make sure it says mil-spec for the buffer tube. I like DD stock and pistol grip, it feels quite nice, but there's a million options and they all fit. Magpul makes nice stuff and some of it is reasonably priced as well.

Next you'll need a handguard. This you don't need to spend a ton of money on, just one that looks nice. Geissele makes a nice hand-guard they are light and strong but it's on the slightly higher price end. They all work, and they all function just fine so get what you think you'll like. Don't go crazy with the quad rails (they look cool but) because they're rough on hands, heavy as hell, and expensive if you want to fill all the unused space with the grips that smooth it out you'll get sick of it quick. M-lok and keymod are the two big attachment systems. I like mlok as it seems to have more variety in parts and is smoother. Key mod works just fine as well.
They all have barrel nuts that come with them usually. Don't get the cheapest handguard because you might get a cheap barrel nut. Most you will find are free floating so you don't have to worry about that.

The last two pieces are parts kits. I just get the regular phosphate "parkerizer" coating bolt carriers and what not. You don't have to spend tons of fancy bolt carriers and shit.

Part of the lower Parts kit is the trigger, you have a big budget so you can definitely buy a nice trigger, but honestly you don't have to. I've been shooting a long time and I've never felt I missed a shot because of my trigger. The mil-spec trigger works great and if you ever did need to use it for self defense you won't be wishing you had a fancy trigger, you'll just be glad you had a trigger that works. You don't notice triggers when you're getting shot at, you can barely move your fingers well enough to reload so it's really not that important a lot of vets might tell you about how they've thrown a magazine into their friends face cuz it flew out of their hands. That being said if you want a nice trigger I like the Milazzo-Krieger MK-II trigger. It's about $225 but it's really nice. Lots of ppl will suggest the geissele SSAE or whatever it's called. They're about the same price but the milazzo-Krieger is much nicer. I've used it a lot but I can't force myself to pay that much for a trigger. But if I ever do that'd be the one I get.

Last lower parts kit piece you'll want is an extended charging handle. The reason you want an extended charging handle is because when you have an optic on your rifle, it can be hard to grab. Strike industries has a cool looking one that's double sided for $35ish. Quite nice and I'm thinking of picking one up after using my friends. Or get a regular mil spec charging handle with an extended latch for much cheaper.

That's about all for the rifle itself.

Magazines are an easy choice, PMAG. Or surplus STANAG or "g.i. Mags" they're the basic aluminum magazine I've got like 15 of them over the years by tactically acquiring them from the army.

BUIS or Back-Up Iron Sights aren't really necessary. But many recommend the MAGPUL MBUS Pros. They are metal and can definitely take some abuse. I doubt you're going to war so it's basically wasted money.

Yo may also need sling mount attachments to go on your handguard. Most buttstocks come with a swivel push button mount already. Magpul Industries Sling Attachment Fits M-LOK https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00ORY7TO0/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_R9lZxbP1NC3E8
Something like that would work for an M-Lok.

I picked up a set of Daniel Defense, they seem pretty solid for the 400-500 I’ve shot with them.

I have a chamber cooler that cools the suppressor surprisingly fast and so far it is all I have needed.

I also keep with me a dry HydroFlask. In case of emergency, I can throw the hydroflask over the suppressor that is still attached to my gun so I can get the gun back into my car without causing fires.

If you want to get a G19 and have $30, don't even question getting a hard shell holster like [this SERPA] (http://www.amazon.com/BLACKHAWK-Serpa-Sportster-Holster-Beretta/dp/B0027JAQKQ/).

If you don't need the additional retention because you don't sprint/roll a lot, [this other holster] (http://www.amazon.com/Blackhawk-Sportster-Standard-Holster-Paddle/dp/B007YJYAAG/) will fit your gun similarly and is $10 cheaper.

Either way the paddle holster isn't falling off your belt and your gun is secure and fast to draw/holster.

Alternatively if you do want some retention for a lower price, [soft shell] (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B004T18BYI) will work fine with a thumb break.

It depends on what you want to do, but for only $10 more, most people opt for SERPA.

u/PensOrPurses · 3 pointsr/fountainpens

I use shotshell cases for sample vials. You can find them at Cabela's on sale for like $3/box sometimes. 12-20 gauge will fit a 5ml sample vial perfectly.

I also have this fancy metal curved vial holder thing that I use. I don't remember where I got it from but it was around $18 or so.

Not sure if we are allowed to post links here but it’s the UTG clamp on (barrel mounted) bipod.

https://www.amazon.com/UTG-Clamp-Bipod-Steel-Feet/dp/B017DB25AQ

I haven’t used it in any sort of harsh environments, but it seems solid, holds on the barrel pretty well with basically no play/wiggle.
Adjustability is good, and it folds back up with ease. However it does add a lot of weight to the front of the barrel/overall weight so I wouldn’t consider it extremely practical for going inawoods. But for casual range shooting it works great for me.

u/MaximumLoaf · 3 pointsr/curlyhair

Also throwing a barrel mounted bipod on it is awesome if you're going to be playing a marksmen role. And be sure to use the lift up butt plate to keep it on your shoulder better haha. Dont know if that's what it was designed for, but it's how I used it

u/A_Plinkers_Damn · 2 pointsr/reloading

Speaking as someone who's used both... I could never get the PPM to work worth a shit for me with pistols. However, I will NEVER pass up the chance to shill for the Auto Disc Pro.

For super precision, you want a trickler. For plinking... the Auto Disc will make your life so much easier.

Other things to get:

  • I highly suggest a decapping die. It will allow you to pop out the primers and clean your brass completely without getting crap into your sizing dies.
  • I'd get a go/no-go case gauge.
  • Forget the case lube and look up the lanolin/100% IPA case lube. For about $10, you'll have all the case lube you'll need for a long time.

Here are some I've tried recently.

MTM Molded Products Company Ammo Can, Orange https://www.amazon.ca/dp/B0051F8RPE/ref=cm_sw_r_other_apa_Nge4xbQEVES80

Seahorse Waterproof boxes are as good or better then Pelican at a substantially cheaper price. I have one bigger one for medicine storage and one bolted on the back of my Kawi 250. ( http://www.ebay.com/itm/201452035165)

Do NOT go with these... Damn are they crappy.

I got one for $5 or whatever and then got an Ultra box 307....that Ultrabox is so heavy duty. It's about 6x3x3 inches.

This is what I use. Can hold a couple rolls, clips to a belt, and doubles as a weapon for kicks.

Your front sight might be a little loose because the nut is not secure. I would recommend something like this to snug it down, and perhaps a very small amount of blue loctite.

It’s ameriglo if I recall.

Might I suggest this box to store your batteries and possibly a charger if you drill a hole for the cord? I linked a blaze orange one, because it will seem less sketchy if you get pulled over. (Knock on wood. Hopefully you won't get pulled over.)

Is there a permit required for carrying something like this? (Really could be any object that is heavy, hard, and allows swinging.)

u/makenzie71 · 2 pointsr/airguns

Both the Titan and the 95 are great guns and are the guns I generally suggest to anyone looking at a $150 air rifle. The Titan is lighter and quieter, and the 95 has a nicer trigger. The scopes that come with both are complete rubbish.

The other rifle I would suggest in your price ranges is the Beeman RS2. I think walmart sells it as the Grizzly now...it'll be the two barrel combo. There's a synthetic stock version that's a little lighter and less hurtful to your ego when it gets dinged. Either way, though, it's a loud and heavy gun (heavier than the Titan or 95), and simply bigger. But it's got a very nice trigger, it is a solid tack driver, and dead reliable. The benefit here is that for $100 it leaves enough of your budget left over to get a decent scope.

i got the gunslick rod and it's fantastic. the cheapo plastic rod you get with the gun is ok in a pinch but not very comfortable long-term.

edit: also got gunslick jags (which last forever) & brushes, which need replacing every so often. threading on the rod is standard and i tried others but gunslick seem to last longer.

I really like this one. 7 bucks on Prime and good to keep in the range bag

It's the only one on Amazon so sure it's what you were looking at, I don't know how the utg one is but the Magpul doesn't stick out far at all and is rck solid... I also trust Magpul a whole lot more than utg.

Ballistol is great, here is what I use:

  1. Black nitrile gloves

  2. Steel mixing bowl

  3. Gunslick Ultra Klenz
  4. .40 Brass Jag in your caliber

  5. Handgun cleaning rod

  6. Patches in your caliber

  7. CR-10 Bore Cleaner, for removing copper reisdue, use it inside the barrel only

  8. Outers Crud Crutter

  9. Gunslick graphite grease

  10. Ballistol Lubricant

I use them pretty much in that order. If I could buy only 1 thing from the list, it would be the nitrile gloves. All the gun cleaning solvents are super toxic, nitrile is better than latex for solvents. Latex won't stop some solvents. Ballistol is the second best thing, then Gunslick Ultra Klenz is my next favorite. The Outer's Crud Crutter removes all of the above solvents, I use it when I'm done cleaning with Ultra Klenz and CR-10 because it removes the solvents and dries leaving the gun bone dry. Then I apply a drop of grease at friction points and give it an all over polishing with Ballistol.

Ok, thanks! This is all great to know!

What do I do if I actually do need to de-prime a round with a live primer? I accidentally primed one case with an upside-down primer. I didn't finish loading the round -- it's just shaped, primed brass with a backwards primer.

Also, do you mean a chamber gauge like this:

http://www.amazon.com/dp/B005I0IU5E

If so, I already have one. I thought it was just to test if it would go in all the way and drop free, which these rounds did. Is there something I am supposed to do with it that I'm not doing? I also have a pair of digital calipers that I just picked up, and was going to use that to verify the overall length.

Also, next time I'm only going to load 10 rounds before taking to the range.

I bought one of these barrel coolers a few months ago, zero regrets.

I can't speak to others, but this solved the problem for me as I had about 2 - 3 out of 50 do an FTF where it wouldn't fully insert into the chamber. Now I never get FTF issues. Same gun before and after resolving the issue (Norinco NP27, a Colt 1911 Commander clone).

Here's my routine, hope it helps you:

  1. Resize case and prime as normal
  2. Check each one in a Lyman case checker . Typically the only issue I see is a minor burr on the edge of the cartridge base. A quick treatment with a metal file and all is well there, provided there are no other signs of stress or cracking on the case.
  3. Reload as normal until the bullet is seated.
  4. Use the Lee Factory Crimp Die which both crimps, and also ensures your cartridge is not oversized in diameter.
  5. I recheck it using the Lyman checker, but that's probably not needed as I never find one that fails once it's gone through the first check and the crimp die.

Regarding the dies, I use a set of Lee dies that includes the Lee Factory Crimp Die.
Once it's gone through the four dies, I recheck the rounds in the Lyman checker just to be sure.
Hope this is helpful and clear.

As an aside, my preferred load is a 200gr heavy plated bullet with 5.0 gr of titegroup behind it, and CCI Large Pistol primers.

u/netchemica · 1 pointr/ar15

That's a pic rail adatper for a brass catcher. I like using it because I don't have to chase brass all over the range after shooting. I don't like sweeping up brass and I don't like throwing my brass away.

Something I suggest to everyone who asks about cold weather, go to an army surplus store and ask for what’s called a “smoking jacket”. Makes a great base layer, I got issued one when I was in and you can’t beat it.

Or maybe eBay it, either way you’ll love it and it’s probably 30-40 bucks
