Nintendo isn't the platform to go with if you want to get games on sale. There are exceptions, but generally their games only bump down $10-$20 over time, it's hard to find any good old Nintendo game for under 20 bucks like you often can with other console/PC games. Just for an example, this Fire Emblem DS game came out in 2012 and is still $40 from any retailer.

Your only real hope for buying cheap Nintendo games is eBay or getting lucky at the right pre-owned store.

The red one is in stock for $175. Seriously, for an extra five dollars, you're better off getting a new one. Gamestop does a crap job with their refurbs.

Like others suggested, Nintendo refurbs are a good option as well, but considering how little you save, I think I'd just pony up the extra cash. Nintendo refurbs are often in like-new condition, but knowing that you're getting an actual new console gives me peace of mind. Also, whether you buy a Nintendo refurbish or a new console, both are covered under the same 12 month warranty.

You could buy him a tin or two like these

Or be super awesome and buy him something like this but this box is really only worth it if he actually plays the TCG. If he just collects the cards, stick with these- booster packs.

And every kid needs a binder to put their cards in!

Top tier is new 3ds xl. Best fit and finish, option to play 3ds games in 3d (other models have removed this even though they play the games there is no 3d option. Biggest downside is most versions of this console don't include a charging cable so it will cost more to get set up. This is a bundle that comes with smash Bros, zelda oot, and a charging cable for $243

Most versions of the 3ds xl are around 200 but don't come with a charge. If you go this route purchase a nintendo approved charger, as many people have purchased 3rd party chargers and put them into cellphone blocks which overcharged ther systems causing catostrophic failures.

Fire Emblem Awakening, Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon, Donkey Kong Country: TF and a few Amiibos. I already have a backlog of Wii U games such as both Bayonettas, Smash and Hyrule Warriors to get through.

Currently, the only non-XL New 3DS in the U.S. is available through the Animal Crossing: Happy Home Designer bundle. It comes equipped with an Isabelle faceplate, but I don't know if it has a normal faceplate as well. I have heard that imported faceplates can be used to customize it, though.

   2/3/4. I'm 33 years old and have a full time job (my wife also works full time), a two year old toddler, and a baby due in September. I get maybe 10-20 mins of free time on occasion when I'm at the park or waiting to get my allergy shot or I'm waiting for my son to fall asleep so I can leave his room. All these times are perfect for a 3DS. I played 55 hours worth of Fire Emblem and 55 hours worth of Bravely Default in small chunks of time. No booting up a system, no loading games, and you can instantly stop playing if your attention is needed elsewhere. This is game changing (pardon the pun) for busy adults or parents. I have a Wii U and PS3. Whenever I think about playing it I have to think about if I have enough time to actually play. Usually I don't so I don't even bother turning the systems on. Just get one, you'll be happy with it.

Just about a year ago, the Mario & Luigi 3DS XL came with Dream Team. I'm also pretty sure that the LoZ 3DS did come with the game as well. So I would say it's not unreasonable to expect a special 3DS to come with a game.

IMO, the XL is well worth the extra size/money.

If you can afford it, go for the newest model, the Nintendo New 3DS XL, priced at $275 retail, right now, with some being on sale for $200.

If not that and it's way too pricey for you (I can understand), then go for a Nintendo 2DS (the same thing, only without the 3D function or being able to fold), which is only $120 new, and about $80 used on eBay. If for nothing else, it's worth getting one for Pokemon Sun and Moon.

Your first link (New Nintendo 3DS) is the most recent version. The second link with the Super Mario download is the previous version. The major differences include processing power, better/more stable 3D with face tracking, and a C-Stick. If these are that big of a deal to you, then go with a previous version at a lower rate.

If you're shopping for both the console and the game (new), definitely get a 3DS and New Leaf. The 3DS has an enormous lineup of amazing games, and is backwards compatible so you can also play Wild World if you wanted.


I'd only recommend a normal DS (Wild World) or Wii (City Folk). If you were more on a budget. But even then, you can also cut costs by getting a used normal-sized 3DS. If you were shopping new, I'd suggest waiting for the new 2DS XL coming out for $150.


In terms of game content, in my opinion new leaf is by far the best of the series. They added so much new content in the jump between CF and NL so there's tons to do, but it doesn't compromise the core of the series. AC games in general age really well, and this one is 4-5 years old and still has an active community.

To try to summarize the 3DS line up :

the original models (3DS/XL) is the older "slower processor" model, so is the 2ds which is flat in design and doesn't open like a shell.

I would avoid those all together, actually you won't find them new in stores any way, except for the 2ds which I also would avoid despite its cheap $79.99 price tag, it has some drawbacks of a small screen, single low volume speaker and of course the slower processor, I really find the 2ds only suitable towards children for durability.

the newer models (New 3DS/ New 3DS XL) are the ones you want, they're faster, with better 3D effects and eye tracking, and a small nub added to controls.

I believe the SNES edition you mention is the New 3DS XL model here :

See on box the (new) word above Nintendo, that's what you want, and I beleive this particular SNES edition is regularly on discount so you'll be able to grab it (it went down to $99 temporarily last month) so keep an eye out for it.

In addition to those New models, Nintendo launched last year the (New 2DSXL) which has everything the New 3DS models have, except for 3D effect which some people don't use or care about.

The New 2DSXL is an excellent choice, it is heavily supported by Nintendo in different colors and packaged games, and is constantly on sale if you keep an eye for it.

So my advice is you should choose between a (New 2DSXL) or (New 3DS XL SNES Edition) , either choices are brilliant, just get a feel of what he would like more and if he really cares about 3D effect.

Not very many, if any, games need 3D. It's the only major difference worth noting - they play all the same games.

Worth noting that on Amazon, you can get a New 3DS XL for the MSRP price of the New 2DS XL.

One more thing - New 3DS XL systems don't come with AC adapters, New 2DS XL do.

The Nintendo DS and Nintendo DS Lite both play Nintendo DS games and Gameboy Advance Games.



The Nintendo DSi and Nintendo DSi XL only play Nintendo DS games (and, as the name suggests, the DSi XL is just the DSi with a larger screen).

The Nintendo 3DS and Nintendo 3DS XL can play Nintendo DS and Nintendo 3DS games. Again, XL is just a bigger version.

Now we have the New Nintendo 3DS and New Nintendo 3DS XL - these can play Nintendo DS, Nintendo 3DS and New Nintendo 3DS games. Again, XL is just a bigger version.

The Nintendo 2DS is basically a Nintendo 3DS without the 3D function. It can play Nintendo DS games and Nintendo 3DS games.

The New Nintendo 2DS XL is an upgrade of the Nintendo 2DS, equivalent to the New Nintendo 3DS and New Nintendo 3DS XL. It plays Nintendo DS, Nintendo 3DS and New Nintendo 3DS games.

There's also the virtual console from the Nintendo 3DS onwards; by purchasing games off of the eShop and downloading them to your console's SD card, you can play titles from old consoles. The 3DS virtual console allows you to play Gameboy, Gameboy Colour and NES games. The New Nintendo 3DS/3DSXL/2DSXL allows you to play the same as above, but with the addition of the Super NES.

Basically, ignore the DSi/DSi XL. If you want to play DS and GBA games, get the original DS or DS Lite.

If you want to play DS and 3DS games, get either the New Nintendo 3DS/3DS XL or the New Nintendo 2DS XL.

As for Is it worth it?, I personally have a 3DS and a New 3DS XL (I originally had a 3DS XL but I traded that in for money when I got the New Nintendo 3DS XL; the 3DS is mainly to trade my Pokemon between games and for my mum to play). I think it's a fantastic console with a great library, and would definitely recommend.

Dude, just because some modern controllers are stupid doesn't mean that all of the modern controllers and games are "clunky" and "impractical".

Look at the fucking Nintendo 3DS!

Modern design, plays like a SNES controller with a circle pad thing and a touch screen.

Nothing is clunky about it, yet it is modern and new.

Another example of a new design that is functional: the Wii U Gamepad.

It's got a touchscreen, and normal controller buttons.

Want more? PS4. It's just like the PS3 controller but it has a touch pad and a light bar.

See? Nothing about any of these are clunky.

All I can say is, I recommend the 3DS XL...the larger screen is worth a little more pocket space, imo. I bought this one, and at the time there was a deal for free X/Y which I took advantage of immediately. I'm not sure if Nintendo is planning any similar deals soon, but I wouldn't be surprised.

Picked up the gold/black Link Between Worlds edition 3DS last Black Friday, and I wanted to be able to both protect it while showing it off.

Went with the clear Hori Duraflexi case, a screen protector, and the Hori Hard Pouch to store the system while in sleep mode. Sure the Duraflexi will protect most of the surface of the clam shell from scratches, but I wanted to ensure the hinge section didn't get messed up while nabbing Street Passes in my backpack.

If he has an iPhone or iPad, or if you want another option for Android, I would go with the iPega. I don't have one, but it has the highest reviews.

In NA, the regular size N3DS is available... in two bundles that are no longer available at MSRP (at least in Canada). One bundle is the Animal Crossing Happy Home Designer, and it comes with the game, a N3DS and 2 plates. The second bundle is for Pokémon's anniversary and comes with 2 plates (Charizard and Blastoise) and I think the digital copy for the games Pokémon Red and Blue.

And oh, well the N3DSXL might be the way to go for you then lol I have fairly small hands / fingers (5'5" and 23-year-old girl) so the N3DS works perfectly for me. My fiancé has a 3DSXL which he loves, and doesn't like using mine cause of how small it is. But I hate using his because of how big it is lol
I also feel like with the larger screen, it makes the games to stretched or pixaly for my likes. Oh, and it doesn't fit in your pocket anymore.

That being said, prior to AC:HHD getting a N3DS bundle, I was all for getting the XL version if Nintendo released the AC:HHD N3DSXL bundle in NA. But they didn't, so I got the small one.

I have this 3DS and I put it in my pocket if I it fits (pockets on girl clothes are annoyingly small), or I put it in my backpack. It's the Galaxy style New 3DS XL. I loved the color so I waited patiently for a month for them to come in stock

Was debating getting a 2XL or a refurbished N3XL for me and my sister but found a new N3XL for $175 on Amazon. $50 more than getting two 2XLs but, brand new, 3d feature is there if needed, better speakers, and longer battery life (several reviews have mentioned 2XL has shorter battery life).

So, I'm on the hunt for some accessories and was wondering if ya'll could help me pick some out.

• Is there a difference in charging times between the wall charger and usb chargers?
  
• Difference between charge times using usb chargers when plugged into usb wall charger and PC? Would one charge faster than the other?
  
• In one of the reviews for the Yuyikes USB charger, someone asked about the difference between it and cheaper usb cables. Someone replied that the cheaper ones only charge while the DS is asleep/off while it can charge while playing. Is this true?
  
• Using a USB cable, can you transfer things back and forth between a PC and the DS? Be it the system it self or a microSD card?

The USA standard 3DS size was released as a special edition on Black Friday in 2015 or 2016. I can't remember. No idea why Nintendo hasn't supplied more since then. But they are a real thing and they do exist.

Sold by a company called Worldwide Distributors. There's a review on their seller profile mentioning another product shipped to the wrong region, so it's not a unique problem with them. I guess the lesson is to not trust 3rd party amazon sellers, even though I really didn't want Mario Kart 7 taking up space on the DS and they were the only company offering one without it.

You can also get them for that much from Nintendo refurbished (basically new) if you rather have a black one and not the SNES design.

The 3DS has nicer build quality, better speakers, but is heavier. Some people like the 2DS XL for less hand/wrist fatigue.

I think you can only really call it a supply issue if demand is significantly outpacing supply. I never really saw that for the 3DS.
