Ever thought about wearing a dosimeter just to see if they are telling the truth? I'd wear it in a way that is hidden though, as there have been stories of people getting fired for it, and the TSA's official stance is that they are not needed or allowed. Which begs the question: what are they afraid of?

edit: here is one you can put in your wallet

u/smogeblot · 22 pointsr/redneckengineering

Unfortunately he's right. The hole is there to be locked and tagged. You will have a hard time finding any outlet using a spring loaded ball to retain the plug - they will all use simple spring clips. Further, the operation to punch the holes and the quality issues with aligning the holes means that it's more expensive to have the hole than the teeny amount of metal saved. You know a little too much, please humble yourself. Like, how can you possibly bring up the lockout/tagout for industrial machinery that will never, ever use a NEMA 1 plug for single phase? You can even find name-brand industrial lock-out devices for $6 on Amazon that use the lockout holes to lockout the plug.

For people who can't blow a ton of $ on lights, this stuff may help.

It's not as important as a really bright light, but it's better than nothing.

For those that may not use lights or want to be seen more. Used scissors, exact-o knife, and some red reflective tape that you can get at most places like Amazon:

3M Reflective Tape, Red, 1-Inch by 36-Inch https://www.amazon.com/dp/B000BOB18A/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_Y.E2xb10KXSQB

EDIT I do ride with front and rear lights. I also ride a motorcycle and know it's extremely essential to be seen.

It's called a cordless ESD strap!

First the good news: You're not sitting still in a constant field since you're driving through it and you get moderate shielding from your cab.

Now the bad news: This isn't a medical x-ray it's a security X-ray used to penetrate metal, so it has a higher MeV than a normal x-ray. The TSA, the wonderful branch of government that they are, will not release any information concerning their x-ray equipment nor allow independent testing so nobody knows how high these things are really cranked up.

If it becomes a constant thing of passing through the scanners I would look into getting documentation of your exposure and start carrying a personal dosimeter to get a ballpark of what your dose is. Documentation wise, just anything that says, "Yes, driver X drove through a scanner."

For the dosimeter you can buy some fairly cheap wallet dosimeters on amazon. These are good for ballparking at best, but can be included in your medical records as a means to indicate potential precursors to cancer. There are others that you can reset yourself and reuse, but after a certain amount of time they are unreliable.

If I was getting X-rayed more than once a week I would ask my company to sign up for a dosimetry monitoring program. They will provide you with a more accurate film badge and cycle them out every quarter and give you quarterly dose reports and the documentation of exposure will be from an accredited monitoring program.

Not super cheap but a legit option:

This can works well.

It's also important to understand why rags catch fire. It is a chemical reaction so even if it is cold in your shop they can catch fire.

A clothesline with clothespins is another great budget option.

Once they have cured off/dried hard they can go the regular trash without concern.

u/jtinz · 5 pointsr/bicycling

It fucks up the aesthetics, adds weight and anything screwed on can rattle or come off. Especially when you ride a road bike with high tyre pressure on cobblestones.

That's why I replaced my reflectors with reflective tape. Especially the 3M foil is more visible than the typical plastic reflectors.

Practically no weight, won't come off and doesn't look as messy. There's even tape that's black in diffuse light. However, the reflection angle of that is very narrow. So it's a questionable compromise.

u/Cordroto · 3 pointsr/discgolf

The past two years I've tried LEDs taped to discs and glow tape. The LEDs were highly visible, but if they got wet they would die prematurely. Or, they would go flying off when you hit a tree. The glow tape I used was really bright too, however, it was very difficult to remove from the disc. Very tedious if you want to play tournaments with the same discs you throw for glow. Plus it would erase the foil off the disc.

This year I've been slowing stocking up glow versions of my favorite discs. I also bought the Slinger bag and a 3 foot battery powered UV strip. I plan to line the bag with the uv strip and just keep my glow discs in the bag.

Amazon: 3m 36" x 2" Red $5.46

I have some of the cheep 36" 3m tape (in white) and shining a light on it in a dark garage it definitely helps, has held up great though mud/rain.

The DOT certified tape is probably better (same stuff you see on semi-trailers). Looks like it has bigger hex reflector pattern.

u/spleenmuncher · 3 pointsr/boardgames

Bondage tape is correct, but it's more less commonly known as dry vinyl tape. The stuff labeled as bondage tape usually has a bit of a mark up on the price.

u/babsbee · 3 pointsr/HomeImprovement

I do a lot of dog sitting and one of the best solutions I've seen is anti-slip tape to put at the edge of each step.
There are tons of options, but this one seems to be the cheapest.

Tape: https://www.amazon.com/White-Clear-Anti-Slip-Safety/dp/B00MI8B8K8

Also, a baby gate for when you're not home may come in handy. Just an extra step to make sure your pup stays safe and happy :)

At work we use a steel safety can, however it's overkill and a bit pricey for a home shop.

You shouldn't throw it in the trash - if you live in a city, there's probably an E-waste/Household hazardous waste program that will take it. You can collect it and dispose of it with your dead batteries, broken electronics, etc.

u/Reconn · 2 pointsr/CalamariRaceTeam

I used this for my stuff. But its thin, so itd be a pain for tracing a decal out.

There are 2 inch versions that would be easier to use. Finding the color you want might be hard. Example 1, Example 2

It looks like plain electrical tape until you shine a light on it when its dark.

u/J4CKJ4W · 2 pointsr/Printmakers

You can buy rags specifically meant to soak up paint at a hardware store, and store them in a metal container once they've been used before disposing of them (or just pin them up outside to air out before reusing them). Old shirts and socks work, too.

u/benbart · 2 pointsr/fatbike

I did exactly this for my Clownshoes and snowcats. Using tape just like this: http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00ICWRLGE/ 2" wide just baaarely fits in the Clownshoes. Had to trim the width down for the snowcats.

I got 15ft per bike with maybe 2 feet leftover each. The local fire/safety store sells the stuff by the foot and it came in blue, yellow, red, alternating red/white and of course, white.

It does not stretch.

u/CompWizrd · 2 pointsr/MaliciousCompliance

Probably like this: https://www.amazon.com/Master-Lock-Lockout-Tagout-Electrical/dp/B001HWF4ME because if you remove one of those with my name on it without going through the proper procedures, you're getting written up and disciplined(and potentially fired) for violating our LOTO policies.

I use the Mechanix M-pact framer gloves. They have great knuckle protection, D3o palm padding, phenomenal grip and I like the fact that they have cut off fingers for better brake feel.

They make the same glove in a full finger model too.

u/Proton_Driver · 2 pointsr/DIY

As someone with bunk beds and young kids, I recommend you put some anti-slip grip tape on that ladder. Especially with a 3 year old using it. One of my kids slipped on a smooth ladder like that and smashed his face on a rung, require a midnight trip to the ER and stitches inside his mouth. Lots of blood... it was a horrible night.

Also, make sure the kids can't remove the ladder.

I have a version of this; it has the best size and feature-to-price ratio. I opened it up; the PCB is marked in Russian; although they certainly hide that fact unless you do some research.

u/LouDiamond · 1 pointr/motorcycles

lol, no kidding... 'diamond grade sheeting', i bet you need tin-snips to cut it too....

still, i'd like to buy a roll of the 2nd-highest stuff to put in a few place on my bike.

actually, buying a little of the diamond grade stuff to put over existing reflectors (like in your forks) may not be a horrible idea as well....

edit: apparently it's not so bad: http://www.amazon.com/Safe-Way-Traction-Conspicuity-Reflective/dp/B00ICWRLGE/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1395068601&sr=8-1&keywords=diamond+grade+reflective+tape

I do not think leds are practical for sockets. I'v used glow in the dark paint (search term: photoluminescent) on various things. I had to buy the expensive stuff you probably won't find in stores, and the bottles are bright enough to navigate a messy room or even read by. I could imagine a small groove near the base of the socket fitted with a plastic glow ring.

I'm thinking the most reasonable product would be a thin strip of Micro Prismatic Reflective tape sold to customers who apply it to their own sockets. 3m makes some of the highest rated on amazon and I'm guessing you could find a durable tape with a strong adhesive.

You would have to have a flashlight, which I'm guessing someone who would need a solution to this problem is going to have. It would be about as bright as a white reflective traffic sign, but I think the 3m stuff is brighter.

The benefits would be no need for expensive design/manufacturing, customers who prefer high end snap-on stuff or others with harbor freight can both use them and you don't have to worry about precision manufacturing. Its a simple and inexpensive product, easy to package and market. You could also sell as multi purpose to put on tools and whatever else people drop in the dark. Just wanna make it possible to apply the tape without covering the size markings on the socket.

That being said the very brightest glow in the dark stuff is really cool I'v put on everything. I painted the back of my laptop so when the lights are of there's a little design on it. Put some on flashlights so i can find them in the dark. Fully charged it is about as bright as a glow stick. You can get various colors but due to some kinda limitation green can be made quite a bit brighter than other colors and lasts longer also (technically 24 hr. but probably only several hours being pretty bright).

Ohh, if anyone buys some from the link I just gave you ya might wanna get the oil or solvent based paints depending on what you will use it for. The water based dries a little rubbery and needs a certain type of surface to stick well (no smooth metal). You could get the pure pigment (it's like fairy dust) and mix it with clear high strenth glue (i think many epoxys absorb UV so they may not work well). Also applying fingernail polish or a clear gloss on top will protect it and smooth out the surface, the brightest pigments use larger (crystals?) and almost feels like sand mixed with paint.

Yes, we have a partnership with an NGO called Safecast, that combines our databases for a map:

I just ordered my own since they are apparently cheap now:

Will have it in two days if amazon does its usual thing and will report back.

Wow, that is really helpful. I recently had a kid and I'm kind of paranoid about exposing him to stuff and thought it might be a fun educational tool later so for a few months I've been thinking about getting something like http://smile.amazon.com/RADEX-Advanced-Radiation-Detector-Software/dp/B00DAITFOG/ref=sr_1_5?ie=UTF8&qid=1427764044&sr=8-5&keywords=geiger+counter . Do you happen to know anything about these RADEX brand counters? I'm guessing the Ludlum 14c is way more accurate but these RADEX ones are tempting because they seem more portable and at least slightly cheaper assuming I buy it new.

If cost really isn't an issue, the Thermo Fisher EPD TruDose is what we use at my facility, and I know from travel that it (or its now-discontinued predecessor, the EPD Mk2) is widely used throughout the industry. I've also used the DMC3000 and it's great too. Both have belt clips with displays that face up.

Really though, for the amount of dose we're talking about, and if you don't intend to use it on an ongoing basis or have it form part of an official dosimetry record, you'll do just as well with something for about $100 on Amazon.

u/automate_the_things · 1 pointr/smarthome

You really don't want to risk something gimmicky for this. I'm also in the market for a radon detector, and I'm thinking of something like this one: https://www.amazon.com/RADEX-Advanced-Radiation-Detector-Software/dp/B00DAITFOG/

Minute-by-minute smartphone updates isn't something remotely useful for a radon detector, but being able to upload the data to a computer is, so I can have graphs of data over time.

u/BagelEaterMan · 1 pointr/bicycling

I've attached these to my frame and helmet, they've lasted through 2 heavy winters. I found a 1cm wide section wraps almost perfectly around most spokes and is visible from a good distance. If you're creative you can trace designs onto it and cut them out with an x-acto knife.

If you look on Amazon, under the reasonable assumption that standards used in America provide the absolute minimum level of safety that could be considered acceptable in a developed country, then prices for cones the same size as NZ cones are comparable to the prices (NZ$25-$35) noted in the article:
