Looking at the cubesplosion video in another comment below, and the structure of the cubes themselves as they disassemble, they look like the MoYu WeiLong GTS series ( https://thecubicle.us/moyu-weilong-gts2-p-9150.html ). Or the Gan 356 ( https://thecubicle.us/master-p-6974.html ) They're about $25 each. They have decent corner-cutting, and that would be beneficial here, however at that speed, Definitely want to get as close to perfect as possible...EDIT: I opened the video and dove into the blog, turns out they're using this one;
https://www.amazon.com/Yulong-Smooth-Stickerless-Speed-Puzzle/dp/B00H9FSS58/
An incredibly expensive $4.55
Pretty much this with out the pictures.

I found one called Black Hell
https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B008DCQE8Y/ref=pd_aw_sim_21_3?ie=UTF8&psc=1&refRID=K2CZZ5R8RSBGXV2STBP2&dpPl=1&dpID=51hFjno9spL
Ooh... I can try...
From biggest to smallest:
I read somewhere that they were called "The Imp", but wikipedia has them under "15 puzzle". I learned how to solve one in less than 10 seconds thanks to final fantasy, and eventually bought this one, which is pretty sturdy and has lasted me almost 10 years. Don't buy the keychain version, though, it breaks down pretty quick.
There are actually puzzles that come with extra pieces to fuck with you: Here
It really depends on the individual. My personal favorite is an Infinity Cube.
I believe this is about a square feet in size. It's an all white puzzle
There is also an all black one
I want this one as well(and is only $15!)
Looks like Amazon sells them! Here's the Hogwarts one.
I've always felt that while video games obviously involve art (visual, music, storytelling, etc), video games themselves are not art. Or at least are art on a level with something like this.
But saying this to video gamers is apparently interpreted as an attack on their very souls.
And what a start it was!
There is an unofficial “initiation” puzzle that lots of us in this group do, and it happens to be on sale for $2.47 on Amazon right now. (It’s backordered, but worth the wait at that price!)
Buffalo 1000 rainbow puzzle
Fidget toys!
I went through a few and found fidget rings the most useful:
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0019648V6
and this from StimTastic:
http://www.stimtastic.co/stim-jewelry/bike-chain-fidget-bracelet-heavy-weight
Or a yo-yo, and juggling balls. Anything physical helps us focus.
I'm 33yo, and running my own business, so don't worry about your friend being too old for this :)
On the other hand, I'd be careful with the planner, and possibly the portfolio folder and the post-it notes - personally, for me, that would be overwhelming and stressful. As in: more things to figure out how to use.
As for the other ideas - perhaps a book? I liked "Time Warrior", and "Drummer and great mountain". If he's trying to get back in shape too, then definitely "How to think about exercise".
And don't forget a card of course! If it were me, the best words of support would be to take my time, take it easy, and that my friends will be there for me.
You're an amazing friend for doing this!
I have one of these toys and it is a lot of fun!

This is the original non color shifting one. All the others are knockoffs. It's worth the money. Trust me.
Amazon has it.
Here you go!

Here is a smaller, cheaper version
https://www.amazon.com/Colors-Jigsaw-Gradient-Clemens-Habicht/dp/B0755N7C8V
The silver one up top is called Krypt, and it's made by Ravensberger so it's actually pretty great quality.
Edit: Also white hell and black hell
I work at a game store that has that, and it's no where near the hardest puzzle we have. You want hard, try this
http://www.amazon.com/Bepuzzled-Impossibles-Borderless-Puzzle-Pieces/dp/B001DU0NVC/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1347178662&sr=8-1&keywords=borderless+puzzle
No border, extremely difficult design, no finished picture, 5 extra useless pieces.

Yup! Stuff like spinner rings, stress balls, silly putty, interlocking ring toys, really anything small and quiet that keeps your hands busy. A lot of the google results are geared toward kids, but there are some good office-appropriate ones out there too. :)
Here is the link if you'd like to commit!
There's quite a few cubes that look like that, just look up stickerless 3x3 on amazon. Here's a cheap one I own, it's very nice: YJ Yulong
I found this set of puzzles which look awesome! It's a great test for your brain and also looks really good as a collection :)
/u/bderenzi lets be creative! (found you through random wishlist search!)
If I'm listening to music I'll dance (I'm literally dancing as I type this) I do it for fun at times like this. But I'll also dance while I do work because it helps keep me awake and focused.
In work I use this thing as it's a little more subtle.

It's a great cube that is very cheap.

a lot of people making this thread a lot more depressing than it needs to be...
This!
(I didn't buy mine from here, but 99% sure it's the same one).
That was me who linked it :D
You should try the Buffalo Color Challenge next!
Found an Amazon link. They also have Astronomy Tower & Hogwarts Express!
How close are you to solving these?
http://www.amazon.com/Pressman-Toy-CAR190-Wooden-Labyrinth/dp/B00000ISLL
yeah, I try to let the puzzle pieces pass because it's the established universal icon. But I do agree with you. I get that they were going for connections but puzzle pieces have a stronger association with being "missing", "removed", "incomplete" and "solitary".
not the best impression to have built into a logo.
to end on a fun note! here is a borderless puzzle with 5 extra pieces!!

In case you were wondering, which you probably weren't, it's this puzzle.
I just gave a quick google search and came up with this:
https://www.amazon.com/Puzzle-YM-N020-Movable-Models-Jigsaw/dp/B01MY1UJ8P
There's more out there for assembly too it looks like. Siege tank, Viking, Immortal.
Prices range from 20-50 for these bad boys.
For a cheap but quality speed cube, I recently ordered this one. It's much faster than a standard Rubiks brand cube and it's only 8 bucks. But shortly after I splurged on one with internal magnets for 25 bucks and it feels REALLY nice to use.
I'm just buying off Amazon, as far as I know crazytoys seems to be on all the major sites with them. You can find them listing on Ebay too. I had a really negative experience with Aliexpress--won't ever be shopping there again. Amazon seems to cost a few more dollars but I'd rather pay it and go through them than ever register another account with Alibaba.
It doesn't make much difference since they all ship from China, so that's why I wait until I'm prepared to spend like $200. This took about three weeks to arrive.
I believe there are currently four 1000 piece puzzles.
> Again, as skipping or fast forwarding a video removes the audio component
Fast forwarding doesn't, it's how I get through lengthy recorded lectures on youtube and most of the material on Coursera. In fact one you get used to listening to professors go fast it's almost annoying to listen to them at normal speed.
> The way I feel about it, the whole reason I am paying for an instructor is specifically because it is there role to tell me what I need to know. It is up to me to figure out exactly what is the best way for me to learn the material. But what is the purpose of the instructor if I have to figure out what I should be learning on my own?
I'm not saying they don't tell you what you need to learn, in fact I say just that
> I rather the educator establish what must be learned and have students assess how developed their own knowledge is
So no problem there I guess
> Also, tests, quizzes, and even just asking the class questions can easily gauge the level of knowledge that the students currently have. I have had several professors start a semester with a general quiz on the subject matter specifically so they could gauge where the class stands.
Sure, but the first issue you'll run into is there will be students with various different levels of knowledge and particular knowledge gaps. What is the teacher supposed to do? Prescribing videos that cover the gaps in their knowledge sounds like a great solution. To me this problem seems better addressed on my side of things. But I would even dispute how useful quizzes are, knowledge isn't a simple binary. I understand the mathematics behind derivatives and integrals extremely well, but I always forget things like the quotient rule. Because of the way most math quizzes work the results of mine would tell you I don't know basically nothing about derivatives, when the truth is that I just hate memorizing formulas.
> Never underestimate the ability of an older generation to mess up technology. I have several professors that still haven't figured out how to make Blackboard work properly despite it being a centerpiece of education for over a decade. I've also never left a comment on Soundcloud because I find the process too frustrating. Part of that might be because I am usually not logged in and by the time I actually log in I forget what I wanted to say or the time I wanted to say it. With a comment or question in a class, what you are posting might take a bit to type out and so will have the same delay effect that I have problems with on Soundcloud.
Sure, and older doctors resist adopting new treatments, but we don't just give up on improving people's lives because of their incompetence. I'm sorry but luddites will never get my sympathies.
As to the comments I could try to circumvent it, but I'll just bite the bullet on the harms for sake of argumentation. OK, rather than outsourcing problem solving to the teacher at the first sign of problem students now have an environment which benefits them if they can figure things out on their own. Smaller questions they didn't really need help with they solve themselves, the ones that matter get through. Sounds great.
Even if we assume a portion of the important ones don't get through since they are important once they are in class discussing the material with he professor they'll remember and bring it up then. I really don't see the issue. People aren't goldfish, I have faith they can hold ideas in their heads for more than 3 seconds. (though I actually think that bit about goldfish might be a myth)
> Yes. I had a class once that met at 9:30 in the morning (I am not a morning person and call anything before 2:00 early) that didn't meet some days in favor of an online assignment that we could do at any time. I very much feel like I would have learned more by showing up to class and having a lecture even if I only managed to hold out 5 minutes before falling asleep. Even the worst lectures I have had still tech me more than the best instructional videos I have ever seen.
Well it seems we are both edge cases. On my end I'm so sick of how stagnant the educational system is I'm considering dropping out altogether. But I don't see why a switch to my system isn't a huge win for people like me while only being a small loss for people like you. Like I said before:
> For those who prefer human contact under my model that would still exist, and it would involve even more interaction because all the time would be dedicated to the interacting with the educator. The model I put forth seems to accommodate a greater variety of learning styles and interests than the status quo while taking very little away from those who currently benefit.
> Severe ADD
This is fascinating to me because I actually have friends with ADD and they seem much more engaged by video formats like PBS Idea Channel because there's enough going on there to hold their attention. None of them have a particularly severe case though.
I kind of relate a lot of this myself, for a while we thought I had ADD, but when we got it checked the diagnosis was negative. I currently have 19 pages open, each with almost as many tabs. I'm watching Blacklist as I type this, and I'm talking to friends on Facebook as well. I feel the need to move constantly and so I'm always bouncing my leg, and I do it with such vigor I have friends who detest sitting next to me and will refuse to sit next to me if our seats are in any way connected. I actually borrow a lot of my study advice from /r/ADHD and I bought this fidget back when I was in the US to help me be able to focus better, and it totes helped... Until I lost it.
Now if I have this many problems with attention and I don't have ADHD, I can only imagine how difficult it must be for you. That being said, I don't see why a university wouldn't be able to offer a physical screening of videos for students who wanted it. I'd probably be in favor of it, great way to socialize with classmates and get natural discussions going as well as some peer to peer help.
---
All that to say my view remains unchanged, you've helped me think my view through some more, but it's still where it started. Which is a shame, because I wish I could show you my appreciation for the time and effort you put into this response by awarding you a delta. I really do appreciate it though, like, a lot. I love getting to read and write arguments back and forth like this, you pretty much made my day (and it had been a terrible day). However it is the end of my day and I do need to get some work done, so I won't continue responding to this thread. Feel free to throw in one last comment if you wish, but I can't promise I'll answer (which I want you to know just so you don't write an awesome response and then feel ignored).
Working on this one at work right now. It's actually been pretty enjoyable.

I find fidgets really helpful too. Something like this ring would be handy to have. He could wear it out and it wouldn't look weird when fiddling with it. Or something more affordable like this. And it'd probably fit in the pocket easy.
Here's her next challenge: Pure black hell (I'm currently working on this right now, but it has been 3 weeks and I'm only 1/8th done)

Not super hard number of pieces wise but the colors being everywhere made it hard.. And the shapes weren't actually "normal puzzle shaped" so that ups the difficulty.
Labyrinth.
Here is another tough puzzle: http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B006CPEO6I/ref=pd_aw_sbs_1?pi=SL500_SY115&simLd=1 don't believe me? Read the reviews. It has pieces with flat edges that aren't edge pieces, and pieces like these: http://imgur.com/CY37QCv
Try this one...I'm actually working on the same silver one you posted but will work on this black one next. http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B008DCQE8Y/ref=mp_s_a_1_1?qid=1452324792&sr=8-1&pi=SX200_QL40&keywords=black+puzzle&dpPl=1&dpID=51MPZ7LyThL&ref=plSrch

Yes, that's more the theme I'm looking for. I actually picked up the JR set of that. Also, puzzles like this http://www.amazon.com/Think-Fun-6820-ThinkFun-Gordians/dp/B000EGI4OO/
Kids borrow these toys for about a week so having different types of toys (beyond legos and erector sets) is what I'm looking for.
Try this. I had this at that age and played it countless hours. I believe
I got it as an Xmas gift from my uncle.

For my last birthday, my brother got me this cool lumos light switch. There are lots of options for similar products online and it's a project that you could probably easily make yourself with supplies from a craft/hardware store.
I had a friend give me a wall transfer once that she made with her cricut. It looked something like this and it's been on my wall for ages. Same friend also made me a couple pillows with the same machine that had Dumbledore quotes on them. Imagine this but with "Happiness can be found even in the darkest of places..." on it.
I've also given out an "After Harry Potter" set of books before. For those who read Harry Potter and think "what now?" I'm sure this could be catered to the receiver, but the set I gave my friend had Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children, Lev Grossman's The Magicians, a printed and spiral bound set of Pottermore writings (or the ones that were available at the time), and The Unofficial Harry Potter Cookbook. I think I had one or two more, it was a couple years ago.
I also handmade a pair of Luna's radish earrings for a friend once. I followed a tutorial online and it was surprisingly easy - just required a pair of earrings, some wire, and a few beads and they looked great.
I guess it all depends on what kind of gift you want to give her. There is a Harry Potter application for just about everything. If your girlfriend doesn't have a lot of the standard merchandise already, you might try just checking out the local bookstore. With the release of Cursed Child, most bookstores in my area now have entire tables dedicated to Harry Potter gear. Last time I was at a Barnes and Noble I walked out with a Marauder's Map blanket. I've been sorely tempted by that 3D Hogwart's puzzle a time or two as well. And when I went on the WB studio tour, I got this really cool wand necklace. It comes in an Ollivander's box, though it is a bit pricey.
Good luck. Happy birthday to the gf!
The one on the left is how I learned. Rubick's brand from Target. Once I started to get better, I got the one on the right on Amazon.
I love how two comments and the poster spelt Diango's name wrong.
I'd love this. Windows 7 comes with a picture puzzle gadget and my fasted time with it is 0:24 seconds. Used to play it in school since you could get detention for playing games on the internet and the games that comes with Windows were disabled.
I'd like personal high scores and not global. If someone gets lucky and everything is correct but one tile they could get a extremely quick time.
I would absolutely love this though.
Edit: I also had this as a kid. Taught myself how to solve it on long trips in the car.
Will they fit a cube like this
Turn that frown Upsidedown
THANKS! :D
This toy is the best toy ever. Even though it's very popular and you might already have one, you should get it if you don't have one. Plus I want to know how to complete it.
The gordian knot puzzle is quite a challenge.
Ideally, she has an interest in the game overall, but the situations and play does not suit her, before a final "You're out." try to see if there's something she is interested in that can be added without detracting from the rest of the game. The 5e DMG (p.6) has a list of main things that players like to get from their game (the list is quite applicable to any system). Some people like just one or two things from the list, others like a whole bunch. Maybe she's really into puzzles, in which case you just a one or two puzzle rooms to the next dungeons and at the end the party finds a puzzle box, so any time she's being nonsocial you just assume her character is fiddling with it obsessively (could even make it a physical artifact!)
That's similar to this kind of puzzle. It intentionally has extra pieces (and this one doesn't even have borders) just to make it harder.

Perhaps the Elon Musk book - my dad really liked all the in depth tech info in it.
There are also these small metal puzzle things that a few men I've known have really liked - they are brain teasers and can be pretty difficult!

I just got these today. They're pretty thick. Not sure why it says they'll take up to two months to ship.. I got them a few days after ordering.
It's this one. I didn't know about the Cubicle at the time so I bought this.
I have seen foam squares suggested for people who are worried about the durability of the tent floor.
Holy cow yes. Have you tried infinity cubes?

I agree, if you like that sort of thing it's a great excuse to get your nails done. A family friend would to this to help with dermatillomania, because the length and texture of fake nails made it physically harder to pick at her skin. I imagine it would be more difficult to pick at the actual nails as well.
I don't bite my nails but I do mess with acne or pull at my eyebrows if my nails get too long, so I just keep them really short. Cutting them short with a few coats of thick polish (so you can't bite or tear at them) may be as helpful as fake nails.
Kind of the same but not really - my husband tends to take off his left shoe and sock when he drives and pick at the sock (why I have no idea). We bought him some nice, super comfy socks and an infinity cube to mess with instead. So far it's seemed to help.
Idk. Unsolicited advice, but I wanted to throw that out there in case something was helpful. :)
Amazon has them for $7.94. You could probably pick up a few here and there at garage sales, Salvation Army, etc. I have more than my fair share of them and I've only ever paid for one (at least only one 3x3). You tend to collect them over time.
I'm not really interested in solving super fast, just for fun, but I don't want a puzzle that feels unpleasant. I've seen this one on some youtube videos and it looks decent, what do you think about it?
Also, is it hard to disassemble the one you mention?
Really depends on what you prefer. Although I personally believe you're ready for some shapeshifters!
Try the gear cube (or ball), mirror cube, pyraminx, skewb, or square 1.
Megaminx is also pretty fun to mess around with.
Edit: This is nice, too
Men are like wine. Some turn to vinegar, but the best improve with age.
