A couple details:

Components:

I read QUITE a few reviews and this series was very highly rated at a reasonable price. Ended up getting many of them on refurb, open box, or otherwise for a great discount.

R/L Floor Speakers: Polk Audio TSi400

Center channel: Polk Audio CS20

R/L surround: Polk Audio TSi200

R/L rear in-ceiling: Polk Audio RC80i

Subwoofer: Polk Audio PSW505

Receiver: Harman Kardon AVR-3650

Projector: Optoma HD20

Screen: Elite Screens Sable, 100" CineWhite

Blu-Ray player: Pansonic DMP-BDT220

Remote: Logitech Harmony One RF (no line of sight needed)

Total of all electronic components with wiring and such came to around $5,000.

All lumber used for coffers is 1x finger jointed poplar. Used 1x8 ripped to dimension for verticals, 1x10 for horizontals. Sizes were dimensioned based upon the depth of the gimbal lights above the columns and the width of the column capitals.

Base and casement trim is also FJP, crown molding was MDF due to the major cost difference. Doors are Western solid cores, knobs by Emtek.

All speaker wires are 12 gauge UL rated for in-wall usage. All other cables and connectors are from Monoprice as well.

110v wiring is all 12/2 with 15A receptacles.

Gimbal lights from Lowes, wall sconces are Minka Lavery.

Total for all building materials came to around $2,000 (much of it in the coffered ceiling materials).

The project took around 2 months to complete from start to finish, of working on it after work each day. I'd estimate that there was about 100 hours in the ceiling construction, a great deal of that in paint work.

The columns/trim/doors/coffers are all done in a BM satin, which is the lightest shade of brown. The walls are of the same swatch, only one color darker, and in flat (to prevent light reflection from the bright projector). The ceiling is one color darker on the same swatch, also in flat. The vertical insides of the coffers behind the crown was also painted with the ceiling color to make the crown stand out more. The dark colors were all chosen to minimize any reflection from the screen.

Now that the room has a closet and an egress window, it can technically be counted as a 4th bedroom in my house when it comes time to sell.

100" here, automatically retracts on a button push. Sadly we couldn't have the thing recessed into the ceiling due to architectural limitations. One of the best decisions I've ever made. Every time we watch a movie I marvel at the experience of it.

I had this one.

It worked amazing for 3 years and then after the warranty expired, it stopped working. However, the picture is bright as hell, the quality is pretty damn good, and it has a battery for it if you need it to be portable. The user interface could be a bit better but it does everything you'd need. HDMI, VGA, Composite A/V connections along with microSD and USB readers. I used it on just plain white walls or a sheet if I took it somewhere and it looked good.

Highly recommend if you buy it with the expectation it could die in 3 years. Not sure if mine was an outlier or if it's planned obsolescence.

u/homeboi808 · 14 pointsr/hometheater

You could place all the equipment behind the screen (using a Harmony remote + hub) and you could also place the center channel speaker behind it if you use an acoustically transparent screen; I don't think the recessed area is wide enough to properly accommodate the front L/R speakers (unless using a large screen that isn't flush to the wall and extends a few feet on each side past the recessed area).

Using a fixed vs pull down is up to you.

Since you don't have pre-wiring for surround sound (unless it's one of those outlets that looks like it's for coax), placing the equipment behind the screen (and using the Harmony hub) will make running wires along the base molding less obvious.

I don't know a ton about projectors and which brands are better, but this one looks good.

u/trumpeter77 · 12 pointsr/malelivingspace

Thanks. Projector is a BenQ HT1075. It's 1080p and 3D capable. Cost around 800 but it looks like the price went down. We bought glasses too (see link below). Screen is a white Silver Ticket 110". That's around 200.

It's an incredible viewing experience, I wouldn't go back to a television after this. Only downside is you have to be diligent about light control. We have blackouts on most of the windows which work well. But need to find a solution for the high windows.

Less than the price of a good TV. Couple that with a good surround sound system and nice seating and you've got yourself a home theater that'll rival most actual movie theaters.

Plus the popcorn is WAY cheaper.

u/juttep1 · 9 pointsr/DIY

Ehhh, to each their own. The specs are nearly similar to an Epson 2030, which isn't DLP (I'm not the biggest fan of DLP), the bulbs are hella cheap, and you can even buy one for <$500 certified epson refurbished with a full warranty from Amazon. And in a dedicated room with no windows; psh, you won't notice the 200 lumen difference.

Just my 2¢.

u/Jessie_James · 7 pointsr/homeowners

> I'm not the one actually buying the house, so I don't anything about escrow. I don't even know what that means tbh. My father is buying the house, which is something he's done often, so I have full confidence he's protecting himself.

Please do everyone a favor and confirm with your father that he is using an escrow account for the purchase, and a title company to perform the closing.

An escrow account is, basically, a bank account that is held by a trusted third party. For example, ABC Title Company in town. Your father gives them the money, and they write up a contract, and then the seller works with the escrow company to complete the sale and transfer ownership of the home. Once it's done, and everything checks out, then the Title company takes the money from their bank account and sends it to the seller.

As an aside, another scam is for the buyer to get a last-minute email saying he needs to wire (transfer) the funds to a different bank account. Buyer sends money and then goes to the title company. They ask where the money is, but the buyer sent it to a strangers account and it's GONE. Do not transfer any money to any accounts unless you verbally verify any last-minute changes with the escrow account owner.

> I've met the owner of the house. I've met his ex wife. He's listed at the owner at the tax assessors office, he's got his own picture up on his Facebook page, he's also the owner of a well-known business here in town. There is no way this is a scam.

Ok, that is much more reassuring.

You should follow through with the crime report.

And, FWIW, instead of paying $3k for a big screen TV, check out this projector instead. It's $2200, and is AMAZING. Just point it at a wall and you have an instant 114" or larger movie. Add a cheap surround sound system and you have a theater. I have one, and love it. We have movie night once a month for all the kids in the neighborhood and it's totally awesome.

u/A_Bag_Full_of_Poops · 6 pointsr/hometheater

What's your current projector?

As others have stated, the cheapest 4k (faux-K) projector is the Epson 5040UB at $2499 USD (accepts 4k signal, native display resolution is 1080p but it uses pixel-shifting downscaling technology to make the image look better) and the cheapest native 4k projector I believe is the Sony VPLVW365ES at $7998 USD.

I don't mean to presume anything but if your current projector can't pull off a decent image at 100", then it's either very old (aka 480p) or one of those silly $100 borderline-white-van-scam deals like this. Any legitimate brand-name projector, even an inexpensive one, would be able to pull of a reasonably clear image.

Also, no offense, it seems a little odd to me that you have a 9.2 setup with all those creature comforts but only a $1000 budget for a projector, a 4k one no less. Not to mention none of those retro consoles display anything close to 4k. Do you plan on purchasing a 4k blu-ray player? 4k blu-ray discs are the only place to get full bitrate 4k content (unless you're rich and can afford Kaleidescape or something).

u/Zriah · 5 pointsr/hometheater

Be sure to also consider the 4k, $2,000 projector, the Optoma UHD60. It should be coming out this week I believe. Here is a review from Projector Central comparing it to some other high end projectors.

u/Polympics · 4 pointsr/minimalism

If you can order from IKEA, or have one nearby, I highly recommend you check them out for most of your furniture needs. You hear all the time that people hate IKEA, and how cheap their furniture feels, but I think that might be because people don't know how to take care of their furniture. You have to know the limits.

DESK: LINNMON / $45 - I've had this desk for 2 years going on 3, and have not had one single issue with it. Here is an image of it's potential.

PROJECTOR: Optoma HD142X / $545 - One of the best 1080p projectors on the market for the price. Can throw an amazing 150+ in screen size while still looking incredibly vivid and beautiful. Here is what it looks like in my current setup. Beats my 55 inch 4k TV I bought for $700.

There are also some short throw projectors that are really expensive, but if it's worth not having to mount it then it might be a good fit for you. Just note, any projector will be limited to how many devices you can hook up to it so I recommend either going with something like a chromecast, or buying a receiver to hook everything up to.

If you get a sofa from IKEA, just know that you are sacrificing a bit of comfort for aesthetics / easy setup and take down when you move. But the second part to that is important in your situation.

Most IKEA sofas are bought broken down, and you set it up at home. This makes moving them in much easier.

SOFA: FRIHETEN Sleeper sectional / $599 - This sofa is comfortable, functional, and looks really nice. I have since replaced it with a larger sectional when I moved, but here is an image of what it can look like in a space.

BED: Zinus Memory Foam 10 Inch Mattress, King / $275 - This is easily the best purchase I have made in quite some time. I was skeptical about it's price, but it is easily beyond any mattress I have ever slept on.

BEDFRAME: Really anything you like in this category, there are many options from all over the place. If you get a memory foam then a platform bed without a box spring looks sleek.

Honestly worth it to save just a little more...

Optoma UHD60 True 4K UHD Projector, https://www.amazon.com/dp/B071P6KQZH/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_taa_nOnTDbSM206YR

Elite Screens Sable Frame B2, https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00Y7XA2OA/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_taa_AQnTDbPZRZPWH

I have that setup for video. I also have a 7.1 surround but starting with the screen and a soundbar is pretty great.

u/kn33ch41_ · 3 pointsr/television

I used to think projectors had mediocre quality, and that was very much the case years ago, but now all I see is the future. If you take your visual media experiences seriously, this is the next level. I did the research, and Optoma's HD20 is superb quality at a great price. Unless you find issue with movies in a theater, you will not find issue with anything you see on a home projector, because they look better. You will not be disappointed by the deep blacks. Sure, they could be darker, but it's really nitpicking when you see the clarity of this thing. You will want to host movie nights every night.

u/kodt · 3 pointsr/hometheater

There are ultra short throw projectors that only need to be 10-15 inches in front of the screen or so. But they are expensive and really can't compete with a traditional ceiling mounted projector in terms of quality, especially at that price point.

Here is an example: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01MSBRYZL/ref=psdc_300334_t1_B014OUD5KS

There are also regular short throw projectors, which are designed to sit on a coffee table in the middle of the room. These would be much more affordable.

u/achtagon · 3 pointsr/AskWomen

Go for it! I have one of these mouted with a ceiling mount. A great home theater projector for the money https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00SZ4G4YE

u/sotodefonk · 3 pointsr/projectors

no, thats white van scam trash. Anything under 300 will be hard to get a good projector.

If you can save a bit more, for 349 dollars you can get an Epson Home Cinema 730HD Refurbished. That projector is 720p and with 3000 lumens is pretty good. It also has HDMI.

You mention you dont need HD, there are several projectors with SVGA resolution and 2000+ lumens from reputable brands for 300 or less on amazon. Just buy from a known brand.

u/STARCADE2084 · 3 pointsr/retrogaming

I picked up one of these Casematix cases ( https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0170RIRVY ) to store/transport my RaspiBoy and it works great. The foam insert is customizable so I was able to create a proper space for the handheld as well as a spot for the charger. They make larger sizes than the one I bought, you should be able to find one that'd fit your needs (though maybe not including the CIB games. Maybe pick up a Mega Everdrive for gaming-on-the-go?) The case reminds me of the old VHS rental cases (though much smaller, of course), which makes me smile with nostalgia.

u/SeafoodDuder · 3 pointsr/projectors

If it ain't broken then don't fix it. You probably wouldn't get huge upgrades for upgrading. Maybe longer bulb hours depending on the projector and other additional features like the 'DarbeeVision' from the Optoma HD28DSE or the Rec 709 color from the BenQ HT3050. It's kind of a lot of extra $$$ for not huge upgrades from your current projector (they're still 1080p).

4k projectors are still expensive too. There is stuff like the Epson 5040UB (UB = Ultra Black). That isn't native 4k though and is $2,800.

u/Einsteins_coffee_mug · 3 pointsr/volcas

You could always look for pluck and pick foam cases which are fairly cheap on Amazon and come in a variety of sizes. Larger ones gives you options for pulling out more of the grid for future expansion.

I use this one for my recorder. Not something I'd toss around on the road Night after night, but it's inexpensive and fairly decent quality.

u/phDom · 3 pointsr/gadgets

You can't go wrong with this Viewsonic Beauty. If you're okay spending the $377 it really is the best bang for your buck. I have one in my living room and use it daily for movies/etc. I've also brought it over to friends houses for special occasions. Can't say enough about how much I love this thing.

If portability is your main concern, you should check out the little Optoma Pico Pocket.
I use one of these for screenings at my job when I'm on the go and it always performs as desired. Not nearly as beefy as the other one and you have to keep an eye on the battery but it'll certainly get the job done.

Hope this helps!

u/DieselWang · 3 pointsr/hometheater

I would remove the ceiling fan if you think it poses a problem. For a projector under 1k, I would look into this: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00LTMPOUO One of the best home theater projectors in its price range, if not 'the' best.

Do you have a budget for other equipment you'll need to get?

u/indianapale · 3 pointsr/IAmA

u/UnalphabetizedThings · 2 pointsr/PrimeDay2016

Well, that's pretty much as unfancy as the questions get when talking about even the most basic home theater.

The room size pretty much determines the throw. If you have a big room (eg 12'+), then you can go with a medium throw projector, but if the room is <12', you'll have to start looking into short-throw projectors which are crazy expensive. "Throw" or "throw ratio" is essentially the distance a projector needs to be away from the wall to show a certain screen width (throw ratio = distance from screen/width of screen). eg. If you want a 6' wide picture in a 12' room, you'd have to have a projector with a throw ratio of at least 2. The smaller the throw ratio, the larger the picture you can have in a smaller room. Another way of thinking about it is if you have a room that is 10' and the projector has a throw ratio of 1.5, the maximum screen width will be 6.66' (10/1.5). If you put that same projector in a 15' room, the maximum screen width would be 10' (15/1.5).

If you are planning to blackout the room, you can get away with fewer lumens, but if you plan to leave the windows uncovered or only partially shaded, then you'll need far more lumens to get a decent picture.

How you plan to mount the project determines the connections and image alignment. If you need wireless connections, that eliminates a lot of projectors. If you plan to mount the projector from the ceiling vs mid-wall, you'll need to be able to adjust the image. Some have pretty basic controls, but depending on your plans, you may need something better.

For my home theater, I have a BenQ W1070. It's 14' room with black-out window covers, and it's mounted mid-wall. However, I only spent ~$500 on it because when I bought it the newer version had just come out. The newer model W1075 is actually cheaper than the older model, but still one of the best in its class. My uncle builds $40k+ custom home theaters for a living, and in his opinion, the next projector better for my set-up was just shy of $15k.

u/triedby12 · 2 pointsr/hometheater

I have nothing to say about the projector you are looking at, but I purchased the Epson Home Cinema 730HD Refurbished projector for the exact same purpose. It has been great so far. I think the projector you are looking at is only 1000 lumens, which might be to dim for outside viewing. Not sure if Vivitek makes reliable products, but if you want something to enjoy for years to come, I would chose a reputable company.

u/man_of_adventure · 2 pointsr/malelivingspace

Read the reviews and make the decision yourself.

u/Phil_P · 2 pointsr/gadgets

I have the Optima HD20 and a 120" screen for about 6 months and it is fantastic. Amazon sells the projector for US $900.

u/Rhuarc86 · 2 pointsr/hometheater

That's a nice TV! Depending on your room, you could also get a very nice projector in that price range: https://www.amazon.com/Sony-VPLHW45ES-Theater-Gaming-Projector/dp/B01FWIEIRU I have the 40ES and it's phenomenal! With a room that's 25x40, I'd bet you could find a place for a projector screen :) Speaking of which, is this space wide open 25x40? If so, you'll need a fairly decent sub to fill that space. I'd look at the SVS Prime 5.0 package paired with a SVS PB-2000 for speakers and this receiver: http://www.accessories4less.com/make-a-store/item/denavrx2200w/denon-avr-x2200w-7.2-ch-x-95-watts-networking-a/v-receiver/1.html

*Edit: The SVS have an in-home trial, so if you don't like them, you can send them back.

u/KnuckleSamich · 2 pointsr/GrandTheftAutoV

The quality in my opinion is great. I don't notice any lag at all. If you're into competitive gaming, you might notice something.

I have this projector. I got it when it was at $1200, but it has apparently gone down a lot since then. Jerks...

The main thing is light control. If you can't make your room dark enough, you won't be able to use it during the day. With this projector, I can use it in moderate light, but it's obviously better at night.

I don't even use a screen, just some 2" wide black felt tape stuck on the wall as a border. For all my purposes, it is fantastic.

I hope you've got some sweet surround sound to go with it!

u/reptoss · 2 pointsr/projectors

I just posted this same reply elsewhere but my top two options if you can go to the $500 range are Optoma HD 143X for $499 and Epson 2150 for $699.

It's above the price range (assuming OP meant <$500) but I have the Optoma HD20 in my home theater room on a 120" screen and it looks great! It doesn't have built in speakers but projector speakers rarely are good. Accepts your standard VGA plug or 2 HDMI inputs if your video card has that as an output. Also, allows for component and composite connection if you have other sources that use that.

u/agray20938 · 2 pointsr/hometheater

Oh well that's what I meant. How dark is your room, and how large is your screen. But if you're in a light-controlled room, that's totally dark when you need it to be, you can pretty much get away with any brightness unless you're going for 135"+.

And yes, you can grab the optoma on Amazon.

u/threeclaws · 2 pointsr/projectors

In a dedicated home theater, 5030ub although at the ~$2k pricepoint I'd go sony 45es easily https://smile.amazon.com/dp/B01FWIEIRU although buy from wherever, pretty much, because sony has strict price controls so it should be $1800 everywhere.

u/zim2411 · 2 pointsr/projectors

The 5030UB is the updated version of the 5020UB and is actually a bit cheaper. Projector Central also just yesterday updated their comparison between the HW40ES and the 5030UB.

> The bottom line is this: the Epson 5030UB is an excellent projector, and the HW40ES cannot match its placement flexibility or deep black levels in the darkest scenes. However, in situations where the additional zoom or lens shift of the 5030UB are not needed, the HW40ES has a brighter picture with excellent detail and less digital noise that is also higher in contrast in most scenes. A quieter fan also makes the HW40ES the go-to choice for smaller rooms.

Either one is a solid choice, and they are both rated for 5000 hours eco mode life.

> The Epson 5030UB is capable of deeper blacks in dark scenes thanks to its automatic iris, but scenes with a higher average illumination are higher in contrast on the HW40ES. There is a slight delay in iris adjustment when the 5030UB suddenly switches between bright and dark scenes, and this can occasionally cause a distracting "flicker" artifact that is never seen on the HW40ES due to that projector's lack of an auto-iris.

I know for me with my PT-AE4000 I rarely think "man I wish this bright scene was a bit punchier" but often think "man, that black level could really be so much better." It's hard to compare picture quality without having a reference, but if you have a black border around the screen you'll always notice the projected image is brighter than that. Ergo, I would probably lean towards the 5030UB.

You may also want to consider some of the JVC units, though they really start at $3500+

Projectors aren't loud at all... They have a cooling fan? Maybe I missed the point of the question...

Understand that I use my computer for all of my TV-shows and DVD watching and video games. The only reason for a separate TV then is the massive screen. If I want high resolution, I use my computer. That being said, amazon.com has a number of well reviewed projectors (one and two) under the $430 price tag that OP got.

If I were going to get a projector tomorrow, it would probably be one of those.

It's a little rough around the edges as far as cabling goes, but I'm not 100% set on where my gear is going to go. For now its on a bookshelf opposite the screen. Once I use the room a bit and get a feel for things I'll move the outlet closer to the projector and fish a HDMI cable through the wall/ceiling instead of going across the ceiling.

u/korDen · 2 pointsr/projectors

I think the deal you are talking about is a scam. Most of projectors on Amazon are hijacked by scamming sellers who pretend to sell user items for way below their market value. You can check if a seller is a scammer by going to their profile page. If it says "contact [email protected] before placing an order" - that's a scam.

Another way is to check what else this seller is selling. I saw a few scammers who were selling everything for $400, from high-end projector ($4k+) to cheap photo cameras (<$200) for the same price. They are also all "just launched" or have low sale.

Edit: yup, 2 sellers claiming their are selling HT3050 for $300:

First, since everything is already wired, you need to make sure you get a model that works with your screen size and mounting distance.

I like this calculator: http://www.projectorcentral.com/projection-calculator-pro.cfm

Good luck!

Next, most reviews say the best entry-level DLP projector is the BenQ W1070 or the updated W1075. If you watch for a sale you can get them very close to your price range.

https://amzn.com/B00A2T6X0K

https://amzn.com/B00LTMPOUO

The main reason they are so well reviewed is they are one of the few entry level projectors that have a true RGBRGB color wheel. This results in a lower listed brightness (because they don't have a clear segment to cheat the test), but a greater perceived brightness during actual use. They also have better color balance without calibration right out of the box.

In a blacked out room they should be more than bright enough.

u/bugalaman · 1 pointr/hometheater

I own it too. It is a wonderful projector. Nice and quiet in eco mode and plenty bright. I'd probably go for the new version that has 4K enhancement and HDR support.

u/toynbee · 1 pointr/hometheater
  • The 3d is nice to have, but I understand the desire for simplicity. In this case, the 3d really drove up the price; I wanted both 1080p and full 3d, which at the time was a rarity in consumer-level projectors and so really drove up the price for me. Most projectors are not 3d, in my experience.

  • The install was easy. I used the following products:

-- Omnimount, which is basically just a shelf for my projector.

-- Projector mount an actual projector mount; my current house is not conducive to this, but this is the mount I used at my last house. Both worked well and were easy to setup.

-- Actual projector, my projector. Again, it was one of the few ones below $10k with the features I wanted at the time I was looking. Now these seems more common.

-- Projector screen. This is 100"; you can get bigger or smaller and how big you needs depends on the projector and the size of the room. At my last house, I just used a white wall, which works very well if you have an appropriately sized and colored wall. This particular screen broke (the screen works fine but the motorized opening and closing stopped working), but that may have been my fault.

  • This projector has two HDMI and one RCA port. It has no speakers, so I use a receiver and 5.1 speakers; my last projector had 2 speakers and an ipod mount, which was neat but mostly only useful if you were using your projector away from home. My last projector was an Epson; I forget the particular model, but it was similar to this.

  • If you don't want 3d or other sexy features, you can get a quality projector for a few hundred dollars. This is especially amazing if you consider the price of a similarly sized TV: again, I have a 100" screen that supports full 3d and 1080p. The price of a similarly sized and featured TV is astounding, while I only paid $1300 on this one.

Please let me know if there are any other questions I can answer!

2016 overall choice projector

u/00raven · 1 pointr/projectors

I'd choose the HC1040. its 469 refurbished on epson.com
---
Cheaper bulbs, great color balance, longer eco lamp life, better features, decent positioning, better remote, needs AV receiver or speaker with hdmi audio passthrough or a P.C..
Gets loud using full power mode but quite quiet in eco with almost no loss to the strength of the projected image even in ambient light.

If you're using a HTPC(like an xbmc device) as the video source its a non issue.
Just need to get a screen that favours the epson in for deep black reproduction and you're set.

The HD142x will have some nice color to it but the adjustments are less intuitive, the focus wheel will get reset every time you put on the lens cap and unlike the HD141x you cannot adjust it from the top only the front which feels a bit shallow increasing the time to focus.
The emphasis on the Black levels seems to come at the expense of white reproduction and even gave other items within the image a yellow or brownish tone.
You'd need much more aggressive settings that the out of the box presets to get the accuracy you want with it.

Now objections:

u/-b-money · 1 pointr/battlestations

Agreed, movie theatre quality is going to cost a fair amount. The bulbs alone can really add up.

I owned this one the past 4 years in college and it was perfect for watching TV and playing Xbox: amazon link here

Again, not movie theatre quality, but really did the trick. We were able to have a ~70inch screen for about $350. If you're able to set it up in a very dark room that would help a lot (would allow you to get away with fewer lumens)

u/Torisen · 1 pointr/sonos

Seconded, I have an Epson 5030ub projector and an HDMI switcher so all my inputs' audio go through Sonos. Works a treat.

u/RubberReptile · 1 pointr/ProductTesting

Omg, yes, run far away! Low native resolution, poor light output, loud... For less than $80 you can get basically the same projector bought outright, but I'd recommend getting an Epson HC2030. It's worth the extra cost for REAL full HD, better colour output, quieter operation and higher brightness (but it's $400 more lol). This is not a thing to cheap out on.

u/firepixel · 1 pointr/hometheater

Roger that, I ordered the projector and ceiling mount, they added a refurb on Amazon for $499.99 (reg $699.99, list $799.99) so I had to act fast. Not sure what the "usually ships in 1-2 months" message is all about, lol. I also added the CV Center Speaker to my order. These CV bookshelf speakers are going on my wishlist, I think the two 12" subs in my Re-30s will be plenty of bass for now. I'm going to take my time on the receiver, I really want something that's going to shake my wife's dishes upstairs and I know from experience, these CVs can handle a ton. I'm looking for something with some serious power. I have a Kenwood KA-7010 Integrated Amp (100 watts per channel RMS) that was perfect but all of the right channels recently stopped working :(

First go.

I fiddled with the angles and aspect and eventually got the image and screen edges to lineup.

So far I love the Optoma. It is clear and bright with ambient light in the room, colors are crisp and vibrant, noise is minimal or nonexistent with media audio playing, internal speakers are not bad at all. Has four display options 16:9, 4:3, "Super Widescreen", and LGX(I think). Changing between inputs is very quick and efficient, and set-up is incredibly simple. I've got a Chromecast and Roku3 thrown into it, and will be hooking up an older Bose 3-2-1 into it once I put shelves up for the speakers.

I do wish the volume could get softer as "1" is still loud enough to be heard through closed doors. I also have had one instance of turning the projector off and then 10 seconds later just the audio kicked back on. It also puts out not a small amount of heat.

u/SnakexBombs · 1 pointr/hometheater

Based off amazon.ca's prices, it looks like you're overpaying for your Epson 2045, even with Canadian pricing.

I'd think about getting a bigger screen. 100" is big, but unless your seating distance is only like 8 feet away, then I'd go with 110" or 120". I can't tell if the Cinema Choice E-Series screens are tab tensioned, but if not, I'd go with something else. It's my understanding that pull-down screens without tab tension will eventually become wavy.

Your sound cost of $369 includes more than just the subwoofer, right?
You also will need an A/V receiver to plug in the subwoofer and speakers, but it was unclear if you already have one or not.

$360 sounds like a whole lot for a projector mount and cables. The Epson 2045 is a small projector and doesn't need a hefty mount, so I can't imagine why they're charging so much here. I'd ask for a price breakdown - they might be overcharging you for HDMI cables or something.

The 2045 is a good choice, but for $3,000, you could also get a lot more (like a Sony VPL-HW45ES) if you went the DIY route and increased the budget just a tiny bit.

One small note: if you're going to be sitting close to where your projector will be mounted, you should know that the fan on the 2045 is kinda loud.

u/lapeet · 1 pointr/projectors

Big fan of this... Sony VPLHW45ES 1080p 3D SXRD Home Theater/Gaming Projector https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01FWIEIRU/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_L2yQBbAN3P3A0

Can find it right at $1.8k at times.

u/DZCreeper · 1 pointr/hometheater

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B016LEAIJG

At the top of your price range but given that 10 years have passed it will be a noticeable upgrade, particularly for HD sports or game consoles which may be running at 60FPS.

However, the VPL-VW50 is still not a bad projector by any means. As long as the bulb has some lifespan and the screen has no blemishes I would keep it until you can afford the Optoma UHD50 which is $1400.

Provide model numbers of the speakers and subwoofer if possible. Sound is equally important for a good HT, and some people cheap out, either not knowing or caring about this. A new receiver may also be beneficial by itself, with support for lossless audio codecs, and 3D sound formats such as Atmos and DTS:X.

u/Ba11erOnABudget · 1 pointr/projectors

Yeah there really is a lot to look into and so far has been very overwhelming.

As far as 3D capability, it isn't really a deal breaker for me but it doesn't hurt to have either. The Optoma HD25 has been replaced with a 26 model and seems to be priced in the same range according to amazon. However both models show (at least according to the calculators scale if I read it right) to have some compatibility concerns with the throwing distance and the size I'd be able to achieve.

u/SayaV · 1 pointr/projectors

what resolution are you looking for?
I have the Optoma HD180 (out of the market for newer models)
the Optoma HD25LV
and the ML300

and I can vouch for them for movies as well as gaming.
The good thing about the ml300 is its small size but it has a max resolution of 1024x768 I think, although you can connect hdmi to it, but it's so convenient to carry around, it even fits a messenger bag without problem.

The HD25LV or similars are the popular models, being among the preferred choices for <$1000 projectors. 1080p, 3D-capable
Great image and luminosity on both.

Good advice on cost, but you don't want that projector. It's basically for businesses (WXGA). Keep saving and buy a 1080p projector when you can and assume $700+. You're not going to be happy with a lower resolution and will have used a ton of your $$ to do it. The entry level BenQ would now be the HT 1075 http://www.amazon.com/BenQ-HT1075-1080p-Theater-Projector/dp/B00LTMPOUO/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1457998062&sr=8-1&keywords=benq+1075. u/thesupergeek42 · 1 pointr/techsupport

Whats your budget? I have this in my home theatre and I would recommend it fully, but it is kinda pricey.

u/xamomax · 1 pointr/4kmonitors

I want to add one more thing to consider, though off topic a little: Projector.

Pros: Huge screen for reasonably cheap. I'm running about 150", and it's like having an IMAX in my living room.

Cons: Only good at night, requires a white wall to project on, takes time to "warm up".

So not good for general daily use, but great for movie night, or just watching Youtubes on the couch.

You can get 4K projectors, but they are still way too expensive ($4000 and up), but 1080p is well within your price range. I have, and really like, this 1080p projector Currently under $900. I have it hooked up to Amazon Fire TV, and a 1990's era stereo, and it really is a great theater setup.

This totally might not work for your needs, I just throw this out there as a consideration.

u/greatwhitegibby · 1 pointr/hometheater

So, this is kinda what you would expect for a true 4k projector right now.

I had this same thought process about a year ago when I was looking at fleshing out my home theater. So, naturally, I quickly decided I'd wait on 4k.

At first, I went with this guy and returned it because there's no way to augment the picture. You have to be lined up perfectly or the screen gets wonky.

So, after that, I decided on this guy. Not only is this a great projector, but it has a way better image than the ultra short throw, has all the screen adjustments I needed to get the image centered on the screen correctly, but it's also abobut $700 cheaper. Has a great 1080p image, which is ultimately enough for movies and gaming in my man cave.

My questions:

Does anyone have experience making apple tv work on low-def projectors with an adapter?

Failing that, is there a projector I can buy that works with apple tv?

you'ld need about 100 lumens for a decent sized dark room pico projector, with lights on it should offer still a pretty bright picture..anything less will be harder to view, even in dim light rooms.

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B005Q2EGG6

this is a pretty good one but remember, mini/micro/pico projectors are going to be costly the more bells and whistles you look for (this one has 400 lumens) but look at resolution, anything that small won't work well in places like board rooms or giant conference rooms...if you look for a higher resolution expect the price to increase exponentially..

    1. Hardcase with customizable foam and affordable that I keep my Republic stuff in, including bases and movement dials
    2. Feldherr box for my rebel stuff, including bases and movement dials. This is smaller than the thing above though. The specific one I bought is one that holds the Falcon but it's no longer sold on Amazon at least. But really any of them can work.
    3. The HighbridgeDesign template and tournament trays.
    4. Card Box that has my sleeved cards, obstacles, medium bases, damage deck, and then also contains smaller plastic containers that have my dice, various other cardboard tokens, ship indicators, and my normal tokens.
      1. Token Storage
      2. Dice Storage and misc cardboard

All that said, my setup time is not super quick but I can take quite a lot with me and it's just lugging around a backpack.

The bigger your fronts the less your system will rely on the subwoofer to carry the low end. I would always advise that someone go with bigger front speakers. So consequently you need to match it with the CS2 center.

Yes, with the listening position in the center of a 20' room the extra rear channels will help fill the room out. Just make sure your side channels don't point directly at the viewers.

The wood paneling if properly mounted so it doesn't rattle should be fine if it is real wood and not a compressed composite. If there is any looseness you might have to fasten some screws through the center of the panels. Also make sure when mounting the speakers to the wall you go through the panels and into whatever is behind them.

Why go with the HD33 and not just the HD20? It is an older model but all the 33 adds over it is 100 lumens (1800 vs 1700) and 3D capability which is NOT a big enough selling point for most and certainly not worth a $600 Price difference (That isn't even factoring in the price of the glasses!)

You didn't list any subwoofer in this so let me recommend the Bic America F12 If you want an Assault on your senses that will help greatly to that effect.

there's a newer model now, the HT2050.

The projection is strong with this one.

I'd recommend you get one of these to deal with that.
