I home roast and if I buy coffee it will NEVER be pre-ground. The only time I break both of these rules is when it comes to Cafe du Monde. I've tried adding chicory myself but I don't see the point when CDM already does such a good job.
Edit: as others have pointed out to me, CDM canned products are garbage. It is all I've tried other than my own attempts to blend coffee and chicory. Until I try the real thing, I'll keep drinking my canned crap. Thanks for the feedback!

Cafe (Ca Phe) Sua Da is a really common Vietnamese drink that incorporates condensed milk with coffee that often has chicory as an adjunct. Cafe Du Monde is the most common brand of coffee that I've seen but you really can use anything.Note that it has chicory as an adjunct but a good dark roast can do the trick. They're made using a phin which as you can see, is fairly straight forward metal filter that relies on gravity and a finer grind to extract. It's really easy to make and quite delicious though I treat it more as dessert than coffee.
If you live in an area with a decent sized Asian population, you should be able to find it fairly easily as it's crossed over into non-Vietnamese shops. A good bet would be a pho shop or failing that, a bubble tea shop. However, if you live in a place that has a large Vietnamese population (e.g LA or Houston) you may be to explore Vietnamese coffee beyond cafe sua da. Houston, for example, has Long Coffee which does a variety of Vietnamese style coffees, all which are delicious. At the same time, one of Houston's more famous coffee shops Blacksmith does their own version of cafe sua da as the owner is one of the biggest proponents of Houston's Vietnamese food scenes.
Quick tip : you can drink it straight up but it's served with a cup off ice so once it's finished brewing, mix the condensed milk in and pour it over the ice. The residual heat will melt the ice, dilute the drink and bring the sweetness down to something I find more palatable.

If you're comparing the taste you made, to the one you found at the store. There are several things that can be in play. If you're using old coffee it can have a sour taste due to the oils within the beans going rancid. It could also be due to using cold water, which brings out a sour taste.
So in general I would go to a store that has high foot traffic, this lessens the chances of getting old coffee. You also might want to use "cafe Du Monde", the yellow can. Also check if your milk has expired. Good luck.

Bottles or powder, over time you will find a consumption level and schedule that works for you. I personally drink 25+ ounces (v1.6) before and during my morning workout and then consume the rest in 4-6 small glasses throughout the day. Reading this and other liquid food forums has opened my eyes to the wide perceptual and conceptual differences in taste that exist between individual humans. That said, people who insist that either version of Soylent tastes like cardboard paste are either trolling (ie. full of shit) or they exist at the rare end of the "ability to objectively taste things spectrum". I've turned on (converted) almost 2 dozen people to Soylent usage and watched taste tests of twice that number and not one has ever come up with the cardboard analogy.
Cardboard or not (it's not) you can mix and match a thousand things into either version of Soylent to adjust the taste, texture or nutrient balance. I have been on 80-90% v1.x for 20 months. In addition to a daily multivitamin and 2000mg of Fish Oil, I add the following to my regular 2000kcal batch.

With coffee, herbal teas, mate, and postum, you're going to be used to a much stronger flavor. Tea can be very subtle. If you drink it right after a cup of coffee or spicy/ strongly flavored food, you won't taste it.
It can also be made pretty weak, if you're using single serving loose leaf packets in a 12oz mug, it'll be pretty weak. Those are meant for closer to 6oz. Try adding a lot more tea. Add 4 times what you normally do, and steep it for the same amount of time you normally do (unless it's usually bitter, then do less). You can make it really strong if you just add more. I like to do that with a good Irish breakfast tea.
Also, explore flavored teas! Earl Grey, genmaicha, Lapsang Souchong, mint, and jasmine teas are some really good teas.
This jasmine tea has a great jasmine flavor, it's made with real jasmine instead of sprayed with oil or flavoring. It's also super cheap for pretty high quality tea.
Harney & Sons makes a good Lapsang Souchong. It's really smoky and tastes like a campfire, if you like strong drinks, you'll probably like it. It's very polarizing, though, some people love it and some people hate it.
Taylor's has good Earl Grey, which is flavored with bergamot. It tastes like fruit loops. Fancy.
Rishi makes good mint tea. It's very forgiving, if you like mint, it'll cover up most flaws you'll find in tea. The flavors compliment each other very well.
Genmaicha is made with puffed brown rice. It tastes a little bit like popcorn, it's a little sweet because of the rice, and it can have a strong flavor.
Try other things with tea, too. An Arnold Palmer (half black tea, half lemonade) is great in the summer. A squeeze of lemon or lime juice in any tea totally changes the flavor.

It gets way better! Generally My stomach is pretty messed up from medication but when I eat right with whole 30 I have no problems. For your coffee try Nut Pods As far as being hungry and feeling drained the first few days try to make sure you are eating enough and for our first dinner we always do steak, sweet potato and veggies. So filling and satisfying. Bring sweet potato to work to help with the energy slump and these RxBars help with that too. Nuts are also good to snack on. Eating healthy while doing a 12 hour shift was never easy but you just have to make time. You'll feel better after the first week. Hang in there!

I generally dislike spicy teas but tried Harney & Sons Hot Cinnamon Spice at a hotel and liked it enough to buy a small tin. It has a serious spicy punch, so you might like it. It's available in bags and loose leaf. The bags I had at the hotel were a good quality and I did not feel cheated.
You already have a teapot and variable temp kettle so the initial expense is out of the way. Now you just need some tea to brew!

They look a bit different, but they work just as well as the other k-cups. The coffee is damn good too, for those that like a strong coffee, that's not bitter. I've had Fog Chaser and French Roast, and my wife and I both like them very much.
Loose leaf enthusiast here. Teavanna definitely has high quality leaves but you should check your options before you commit. Also - Teavanna(at least the one at South Coast) tries to push the sweet/mixed stuff too much - it's like showing off a steak with A1 sauce instead of letting customers try the delicious steak itself.
I highly recommend just buying tea in bulk on Amazon. If you're looknig for green, these are good : Link $14 for a 16oz bag will last you a very long time. Davidson's Gunpowder is cheap but robust and still delicious for its price.

If you're really keen on going to a store, a lot of the 'alternative' markets have loose leaf. Whole Foods has a pretty good selectoin of loose leaf - keep an eye out for the Rishi brand(Link), quality stuff. Make sure they sell it in loose form and not in the bagged/satchel form.
You can also use Yelp to find a local coffee/tea shop that offers loose leaf tea - they sometimes sell the leaves by itself. Link

Not sure about you, but I don't use a ton of shelf stable stuff anymore. I have a big row of mason jars up high full of probably rancid gluten free flours and sugars from my pre-keto days :p They look cool, though!
Besides the three you mentioned: maybe nuts? Is there anything you go through fast enough that it won't need to be in the fridge or in a smaller, airtight, opaque container? For oils or vinegar that you go through fast enough, you could get pretty glass bottles with pour spouts. Actually, some olive oils come in really pretty bottles already.
What about coffee? I buy small, soft k-cups that use less plastic, so we actually keep regular and decaf coffee in wide mouth mason jars by the keurig. (this brand; they also are sold at Costco: https://www.amazon.com/San-Francisco-Bay-Coffee-Compatible/dp/B007TGDXNO). Beans or ground coffee would be prettier than the cups, if you use that. If you aren't going through coffee pretty quickly, I don't recommend this, because gets stale.
There are more options if you're willing to do bigger jars than masons. Tea bags? I tried those in a wide mouth mason jar and they just don't fit very well. But a big wide canister with straight sides would hold tea bags pretty nicely if you either have enough of the same kind or don't mind digging through a jumble to find the flavor you're looking for.
Non-food things? Utensils? Measuring spoons? These would probably look best in the tall narrow jam jars (8 or 12oz) or the wide mouth pint or 1.5 pint jars. The straight sides look really nice.
Some friends of mine bought all Market Pantry (target store brand) canned goods. The label/branding is pretty simple, so it actually looked really clean and elegant when displayed on a bookshelf. If you use a lot of canned goods, this might be an option too and doesn't even require jars.
I use 2 level teaspoons of japanese Tmatcha per 'meal' of soylent 1.x.
Initially I ordered this cheaper green tea powder from Taiwan but the packaging was crap, it sprayed powder all over the other stuff in the box. The Tmatcha stuff is in a much sturdier bag and they double-bag it with a zip-lock bag too.

Some stuff it just makes sense to try and get in bulk, because you get so, so, so much more.
Also, re milk. You don't have to get powdered milk. You also have the option to get UHT milk. UHT milk is milk that's been cooked at a high enough temperature that it becomes shelf stable. Just search for UHT milk and you'll find a tonne of brands and choices. Different fat percentages, sizes and so on. You can get a large carton, or they also make packs with a bunch of small cartons, like this one: http://www.amazon.com/dp/B002FX2IOQ/. I prefer that, because I don't use milk very often, so opening a small container each time works perfectly for me. You do however, have to stick the container in the fridge once you've opened it.
Also, if you have a tea strainer (or even if you don't, they're only a few bucks and worth it!), try and get loose leaf tea. You can get a lb of tea for around 10 bucks easy, and you can easily make a few hundred cups of tea. To make strong black tea, I use 4 grams of tea for every pot, and each pot gets me about 4 cups. A lb of tea is 453g, so...that works out really well. Even if you make individual cups instead of pots and use a couple grams per cup, you can easily get 200 cups out of a lb box. There's just no beating that with bags, even if you resuse them.

I love this teacup, my grandparents used to get up at 4:45am every morning and drink coffee from these cups. They were thrown out as worthless after they passed. Found one with the same pattern in a thrift store for a nickel and eyes got sweaty real fast.

The more kratom you use the bigger you should make the smoothie. Cons about this is the kratom does add a bit o a weird texture, as if there are fruit peels. But its so easy to ignore. I've found that most expat shops do stock Yorkshire tea, but all of them at truly exorbitant prices (usually more expensive than ordering from the UK or getting friends to send it over).
If you're determined, I recommend this bag from Amazon: 3kg / 1200 teabags for £25. Total including delivery came to £25.50, which means it's cheaper per bag than in Tesco.

That sucks you don't like sucralose, it along with aspartame has helped millions of diabetic people able to taste something sweet on a regular basis without messing with their blood sugar. Aspartame is the most medically tested food chemical on the planet and has no side effects (except for diarrhea, upset stomach, and some other problems when ingested in extreme quantities - you'd have to be on an intravenous line of that stuff to get such a dosage.
Look, I'm not a huge fan of sucralose either, but to get sick off of it I'd have to completely replace my sugar intake with the stuff.
The reason we have large corporations providing food-stuffs for so many people is because there's money in it and they do a good job at it. People wouldn't buy stuff if it was toxic, heck, I stay away from brands if I didn't like the way I felt after eating it. The fact is food is full of chemicals, chemicals that are extremely awesome. Chemicals are everywhere, in fact I'd dare to say everything is a chemical, if a food says it's chemical free, it'd be lying since it has a chemical makeup, heck water is dihydrogen monoxide, salt is sodium chloride, baking soda is something something carbonate (sodium bicarbonate, ah I'm too tired to think about it).
It's not a perfect world, but if you live in America, you live in a country where you have a gazillion options, you can shop at trader joes, walmart, aldi, kroger, etc. There are tons of people who want to sell you exactly what you want at a quality and price that is absolutely incredible. That's why trader joes exists, without corporations, how would you get foodstuffs that you preferred, you'd only have limited options from "government sources".
Believe me, I've been to China, the food is cheap and it's mostly grown in peoples back yard, but when you're driving along and people are burning batteries next to their "farm" it makes you a bit weary about where your food is coming from.

I've been getting into this ancient game Go. The idea of sitting down with some tea and music to play a game of Go sounds just as relaxing.
I just moved to a new town. I don't know anyone and have been spending everyday looking for work. When I had free time I decided to go to this café right downtown. I brought my Go board (Goban) with me. Go is a game that needs too players, so right after buying a nice cup of tea, I set up the board and opened the app on my tablet. Interestingly, we have yet to build a program that can beat the pros at Go. Fortunately for me, this isn't a problem( :/ ). So I start the Go app and start setting out the pieces(stones) out on the real board with every move I make and rhe computer makes.
Unfortunately I lost, but it accomplished my goal. Someone else spotted me playing and asked to play. We played our game till they had to go. We called it a draw, and thank god because I was losing so bad. But while we were playing he said, "not to make any assumption on your gender or sexual identity, but guerilla gay bar is tomorrow night and you should come." To clarify, GGB is a monthly event where a local bar hosts a night for the GLBT+ community to hang out.
I went and met a lot more people, so now I don't feel so alone.

Regarding the cramping, that's one I'd not heard before! Gonna try it. I invested in a case of the Pickle Juice stuff and take a couple with me on long rides. I down a bottle around 40 miles in, BEFORE my legs start complaining. Today, despite the pickle juice, at about 43 miles in, I had to get off and walk for about 5 minutes. I didn't actually cramp, but my legs were right on the edge of cramping. Happened again at about 47 miles, and another short walk got me past it. I was home at 50 miles.
I signed up for a 75 mile ride next Saturday on a new section of toll road that hasn't opened to cars yet, only to be reminded by my buddy that Sunday is the 70 mile Tour de Houston we both signed up for. Argggh.
I'll probably just do 25 of the Saturday ride (it's a 25 mile loop that the 75 milers just repeat 3 times) so I won't blow my chances of a good ride on Sunday.
I'm training up for the MS 150 ride from Houston to Austin next month, which is actually 160 to 180 miles (depending on which start-point you select). This will be my 1st one. My twin brother has done 3. It's time for me to step up.

I see! Well, in that case, try out Gunpowder green tea. It's really inexpensive and if you can find an international or asian grocery store near you, you can get a box for a couple of bucks! Just make sure your steeping temperature is right. Usually 175-180 or you will get a bitter brew.
This brand Is usually the one I see in stores. That's a half-pound, but they come smaller than that. You can also find some Jasmine greens there too. Such as this one. Again, they come in smaller tins than that.
Coffee is best if you grind and brew it fresh. An Aeropress, a burr grinder, and a decent bean will make an amazing cup of coffee. You won't even want to put sugared shit in it because it tastes so good. Go to Starbucks and get a reserve coffee on the Clover machine if you want to try this brewing method.
Tea is best if you use loose leaf tea. Buy a single-cup, basket-style, tea strainer and some tea. I'd suggest Gunpowder Green Tea to start.

It sounds like a bunch of buzzwords and doesn't really have any benefits besides looking cool but I understand with a product like bottled water the need to differentiate is vital especially since its pretty hard to stand out from the crowd with something people can get essentially for free from the tap.

Yeah your calculations are correct, the only problem is I use 2 teaspoons per cup of tea instead of 1 teaspoon because it produces a stronger tea that stands up to milk. So it'll cost me significantly more. On top of that, if I need 1.5 times that for cold brew, It'll cost even more.

Matcha powder is good for an energy boost for sure! Tastes pretty yummy too if you like green tea.

It's similar to coffee in that it's brewed using hot water to extract flavor from plant material.
It tastes mostly quite different, however. Personally, I enjoy good coffee, but good coffee is much more expensive and time-consuming to make than good tea.
You can get tea quite cheaply, although high-end varieties command exorbitant prices. Here for example is what appears to be a decent Earl Grey (I haven't had it myself) for less than $1/ounce (keep in mind that an ounce is enough to make 14 cups of tea, assuming you use 2g per cup).
Tea is as easy to make as you want it to be. All varieties come from the tea plant, Camellia sinensis. Black tea is usually steeped once, as are flavored teas and herbal tisanes, so all you need to do is put the leaves in your pot or infuser, boil some water and pour it in.
Oolong and green teas can be more involved, since the high-quality ones can be steeped many times. Still, it's not all that much effort.
Mate and guayusa are rather different. They come from two different types of holly bushes - Ilex paraguariensis and Ilex guayusa respectively. They're even cheaper than tea, but you use a tablespoon or more per cup. They also have much higher levels of caffeine, generally speaking. Mate is traditionally prepared using a gourd, and drunk through a metal straw called a bombilla that has a strainer in it.

I've been drinking this jasmine tea with about a teaspoon of honey recently. I've found it's usually better on the second or third brew.
Could anyone recommend some others i might like? That, harvey and son's winter white earl grey, and art of tea's green pomegranate are the ones i like most.
