Honestly, the AR Optics series is pretty decent for the price. I used the first gen 3-9 on my 5.56 SPR build for quite a while and it did well. They track alright and the glass is ok. It's been getting kicked around on an airsoft bolt action for about a year and is still going strong. It's been dropped, tossed, hit with bbs, and bashed on walls going through buildings. At the $80 I paid, I'd do it again.

I have this one which looks different than yours, though. I think you have the newest gen. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00BD55L82/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_LP1PCb9WPKHP0

Bushnell Tactical Elite
I really like this scope, it holds a pretty good zero and is pretty rugged for the abuse ive put it through.

Everyone else who responded is right. Just wanted to tell you the cheap route I went on the wife's. I do not regret it.

  1. buy this gun
  2. buy a black version of: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000N8JV9A/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o04_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
  3. buy a black version of: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0000V2MQE/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o04_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

    180 + 50 = 230.

It isn't the best setup, but just about everyone on the range will know exactly what you are shooting from rifle to glass since these are the most popular of each out there.

I chose the raised mounts because they still allow me to use the "iron sights" for appleseed events.

Honestly, unless it's an emergency, there's no rush to buy a 91/30 online. Raid the stores near your house or wait for a gunshow to roll around your area so you'll be able to inspect the rifle before buying it. Gotta be careful with 70-year old rifles that go for 90 bucks online. You might pay a bit more (honestly, any difference in cost might be negated by FFL fees) for brick & mortar but the peace of mind's worth it.

As for the scope mount, you don't have to actually bother purchasing anything extra. The rear sight base is removable (two pins hold it in place) and once you slide it off it reveals what's basically a 3/8" dovetail mount. Plenty of YouTube vids explaining how to do it.

Once you have the base removed you can slap some 3/8" scope rings on there and mount a long eye relief scope that doesn't require bolt modifications. I myself use a NcStar 2-7x32mm pistol scope, $40 on Amazon.

It's up to you whether you want the recoil pad. The rifle does have a bit of kick (the heft on the full-size one negates this a bit), but it's nothing you can't get used to.

ATI stocks are generally OK quality (I've got one for my Marlin 60) and decently priced but unless they're something drastically wrong with your furniture I wouldn't bother. There's plenty of aftermarket furniture available for purchase if you cruise online shops.

If you feel like getting your hands dirty, you can refinish the stock yourself (not as hard as it sounds) and make it look like what it did back in the Great Patriotic War. I'm planning on refinishing my whole '42 Izhevsk when I get back home.

Really not purpose built, but what I'm using in this setup is an HP Elitebook with a microsoft 720p webcam (is actually the roommate's) literally just duct taped onto an Emarth 20-60x60. Alternatively to a laptop and webcam is to use your phone with something like this.

Better results could be had with better equipment, but it worked well enough for my purpose. Two side notes: For outdoors, reducing the camera's exposure settings helps reduce washout. The other thing is shoot and see type targets work well.

u/Ruhlmdc · 4 pointsr/guns

I did a scout scope on my mosin (though instead of using the picatinny rail I just mounted directly to the 3/8" rail beneath the rear sight). I used this scope with these rings. I've been very successful with this method. The scope sits just perfectly above the rifle, gives me a really nice sight. It's honestly brought new life into my mosin, made it even more fun. Holds zero, goes up to 7x magnification... can't really think of any downsides.

I picked up this adorable scope for my P90-TR. It's p90 sized and ridiculously cheap.

u/tw987987987987 · 3 pointsr/gundeals

I have these Weaver see through and Nikon 3x9 on a couple of 10/22s. Excellent combination. Rock solid. Can still use the open sights.

u/PieForBreakfast · 3 pointsr/guns

I am using this rail adapter, and this light. Both relatively cheap.

The rail is fine, but I would recommend getting a better light. Maybe a [Streamlight] (http://www.amazon.com/Streamlight-69110-Mounted-Weapon-Flashlight/dp/B000JWD16E/ref=sr_1_1?s=sporting-goods&ie=UTF8&qid=1323879680&sr=1-1).

u/[deleted] · 3 pointsr/guns

I took off the back sight with a pin and hammer, to expose the 3/8ths dovetail mount, then bought a 2-7x32 scope with 14 inches of eye relief, the high rings for the mount, and the rubber butt pad. Check "Frequently Bought Together" in this link - http://www.amazon.com/Sports-2-7X32-Relief-Scope-Rings/dp/B003BRB1PM/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1320107802&sr=8-1

Here's a video of it put together - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kTWDJiJLlPg&feature=channel_video_title

I was hitting 600 yard targets consistently within 10 rounds, including zeroing. It's a $150 sniper rifle.

Also, I reloaded my cartridges, reduced the powder, and got the kick down to something like a 20-gauge's recoil, and I think they flew better than the factory, for half the price. (I can't shoot milsurp at California ranges, so I have to buy White Box at $1.20-per-round.)

u/bitter_cynical_angry · 3 pointsr/22lr

I have a couple UTG scopes (also sold as Leapers brand) that are remarkably good for their price. Their primary market is air guns, but they're good for 22s as well because they tend to have a very close minimum parallax distance. You might consider something like the 3-9x32 compact, the 3-9x40, or the fixed 4x (although that one doesn't have adjustable parallax). I would avoid going with anything higher than 9x magnification on cheap scopes, or anything with more than about a 3x zoom range, but other than that, I've been pretty amazed at the quality you can get now for under $100.

That said, of course a more expensive scope will usually get you better quality, but sometimes budget is more important. I still use my cheap scopes on my cheap rifles even though I have nice(er) scopes on my nice rifles now.

It will work without a mask, yes, although it's just a rail riser. If you don't have to use your full mask, you can just remove the riser and use the red-dot on the base rail without any issues. That's the neat thing about using a rail riser, you aren't changing anything at all, really. Well, you are, but at the ranges typical of airsoft with a non-magnified optic, you aren't really changing anything.

Measure the exact height difference between your line of sight (NOT to your cheek, just line of sight) compared to without a mask, and then try to find a rail riser that approximately matches that height difference. The one linked is the 'medium' riser, at 0.83 inches. There's also a 1" riser (['high'] (http://www.amazon.com/UTG-1-Inch-13-slot-Hi-profile-Riser/dp/B003TWX8HS/)) and 0.5" (['low'] (http://www.amazon.com/UTG-Profile-Riser-Mount-slots/dp/B003LT3ISI)).

Look into 1-4x20(24) tubes. Here are some that are up your alley.

I'm afraid it doesn't get much better than this.

>From the feedback on this sub, it seems obvious the general community thinks I should just get a normal scope, pay a lot for it, and forget the style.

This community is generally driven by purpose rather than aesthetics. Rifles are mostly bought for their performance and not their looks. That isn't to say that style isn't important but there are limits.

u/mroystacatz · 3 pointsr/flashlight

You're most likely not going to have any luck finding a $20 flashlight for a 1 inch weapon mount.

EDIT : This may work

u/Bartman383 · 3 pointsr/guns

The NC Star optic he referenced costs all of $45. Dunno what your $700 dollar solution is, but it isn't that scope.

Maybe you could just work on shooting with iron sights first before you mount an optic. Two or even three hundred yards is totally feasible with open sights. Hell, if I can get expert ribbons at four hundred yards with an M-16, you should be good to go. Just practice more, the ammo is cheap enough.

A Holosun HS503G until I can afford an EOTech EXPS3 with the matching magnifier

u/Mean_MAGA_Facka · 3 pointsr/ar15

Just about anything should hit at those distances.

Just get a decent inexpensive optic. Like maybe 1-6X on sale or blem.

Feeding it costs more. Wolf gold is about as good as it gets for decent cheap 223 ammo.

Maybe invest in a $70 cheap spotting scope from Amazon to see if you're hitting anything.

u/goofygrin · 3 pointsr/ar15

I'll do the best I can because I have no clue where I got the metal adjustable part from. It was just laying around in my spare parts drawer. You could probably use a long picatinny rail as replacement though. For mounting I used a buttoned cloth strap, A velcro strap and lots of tape but its pretty sturdy as of now.

This scope has extremely long eye relief (usable between 8-18") if you're looking to mount it scout style. I own it personally and it works fantastic, and even comes with it's own scope rings. Review on amazon say it holds up to use on real steel rifles, so I wouldn't worry about it losing zero on a tippmann.

u/lapetitefleur · 2 pointsr/1022

I'm pretty happy with these rings that mount directly to the receiver and have a window to still see iron sights with a mounted scope.

u/EducatedEvil · 2 pointsr/pics

The one I referenced above will cost more then people would expect to pay. But you will get excellent optics, the two most common eye pieces, and it will be small enough to easily take with you in the trunk of most cars. I bought the 8-inch version, and while I love it, I wished I had gotten the smaller one. There is no reason the one linked above or one like it could not last you the rest of your life.

Now if 270 is a bit too much you can check if there is a telescope store near you, most sell used scopes on consignment.

Or binoculers are a good alternative. The one linked should last the rest of your life. Will proved decent views of the heavens, and can be used by a nosy neighbor as well.

A third alternative is a good spotting scope. Through my brothers you can see Jupiter and its moons. For Binoculers and Spotting Scopes you will need a tripod for the best views.

Differences in these options.
Through the scope with a good night, and the right eye pieces you should see Jupiter's Major cloud bands and maybe the Red Spot. as well as all Galilean Moons and sometimes others. In the right conditions you will see Saturn's Rings and the Cassini division.

Binoculars and a spotting scope should yield views similar to OP's photo.

u/j-mt · 2 pointsr/ar15

If you bought the optic/laser and offset sights from Amazon, you can probably still return them and I would advise you to do so. Especially if you spent $90 on it as I see it currently listed.

You can get a cheap red dot and riser from Amazon to help you test the waters (~$30).

https://www.amazon.com/Field-Sport-Green-Micro-Sight/dp/B00D4AYBR6/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1496439986&sr=8-2&keywords=field+sport+red+dot

That said, your build is really centered more around distance shooting with that 18" barrel. If you're wanting to move into magnified optics, expect to spend a minimum of $150 on a scope and mount.

I know that all sounds kind of dickish, but half the people here have done exactly what you have in some capacity (myself included). Learn from their mistakes. If you want some magnified optics, I'd be happy to offer some suggestions.

Leupold binoculars are incredible but a bit pricey. Sports stores often have a display where you can try out the binocs. Otherwise, you could try a cheap spotting scope.

Sorry, typing on mobile. "Ready" was supposed to be already. Thankfully, you answered that question.

Regardless of my typing goof, you'll have to find out if your Cole's tube diameter is 1 inch or the larger 30mm. Although, since there is so much unknown about that particular scope, my real recommendation would be to save up for this...

https://www.amazon.com/Bundle-Vortex-Optics-Reticle-Cantilever/dp/B01K37MU52/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&qid=1484220403&sr=8-4&keywords=Strike+eagle

It is a 1-6 scope so you get near red dot performance on 1x and then the same distance ability as the scope you are trying to use, all without any guessing and hoping.

Also, fun fact, air rifles almost always require their own type of scope because of their odd recoil characteristics. Most rifle scopes get fouled up from being on an air rifle.

Good luck and choose well.

u/doomrabbit · 1 pointr/1022

If plinking is your major use, consider getting raised rings so you can still use the iron sights. See under the scope.

Also note that the standard recommended 3-9x scopes will add a lot of weight to a very light rifle. Can make long plinking sessions not as much fun. Add a rail and quick detach rings if you want the flexibility to remove it. Bonus with rails is you get lots more options on optics like red dots, etc.

Also, check if your scope is 1/2 1 inch or 30mm before buying mounts like I just linked.

u/Walfy07 · 1 pointr/ar15

I mainly want a durable, budget optic that holds zero to plink with. Trying to stay under 150, 175 max. These are the two I've been looking at. Very torn on which one to get. both highly regarded, relatively same price. Got paid in today.

the dovetail on the marlin 795 is sorta shallow, I mounted my scope with the cheap rings it came with and after a couple hundred rounds it had slid back half an inch, ruining zero.

Switched to this mount, stayed solid for hundreds more rounds, survived a day of Mapleseed.

To mount it, just look on top of the receiver of your Marlin 795, you will see a sort of ridge or rail. That's an 11mm dovetail mount. Common on air rifles and .22's. Scope mounts slide on and you tighten the screws, similar to a picatinny rail, just without the slots, and narrower.

Hardest part of mounting/zeroing was getting the stock rear sight off.

Really pleased with this mount. http://www.amazon.com/dp/B009ZKHD3S/ref=pe_175190_21431760_3p_M3T1_ST1_dp_1

Solid as a rock and mounts well to the dovetail. I left my rear pin in and filed a little off of the mount so that the pin acts as a stop bar. If I cared a little more about looks I'd have drilled holes instead. But honestly it doesn't need more than the included stopper as long as you drill a small impression for the pin. Also Pleased with this scope if you are looking for that too. http://www.amazon.com/dp/B000FH6M00/ref=pe_175190_21431760_3p_M3T1_ST1_dp_1

It's not the greatest scope ever, but if you get it mounted good it stays true. It'll do until I decide to drop some more money in it and get a bent bolt.

Edit: I linked the wrong scope. It's really 2-7x.

this one is good though.

u/AthlonRob · 1 pointr/Hunting

the price is better (by half!) on the 3x9-40mm (link to Amazon here), and Bushnell is obviously one of the big players.

Do you have an opinoin on how it compares to the Vortex? half the price for better magnification and objective lens is pretty nice. Everyone seems to love the Vortex toughness as well as warranty. How does Bushnell compare?

I originally bought it for the AR, however wasn't really happy with the combination, so it's been sitting on the shelf until I got the CZ. I had it out on the range, and I have to say I am really happy with this combo.

u/BlipOfConsciousness · 1 pointr/ar15

I have the same gun. BTW you will NOT regret the purchase. This gun will do everything a $1000-1500 gun will do. If i were you id fist swap out the stock for one with a recoil pad this is a good one here:

https://www.magpul.com/products/moe-sl-carbine-stock-mil-spec

(to save you research the stock specs for your gun are carbine & mil-spec)

Next would be an optic. I really like the vortex optic below:

I would honeslty recommed saving up about $150, and get a glass etched reticle 3-12x40 or so, UTG or Hawke. I have both brands, in various magnifications, and as long as you get etched reticle it is nice. The wire reticles are hugely fat, and obscure targets - I can shoot smaller than the width of the reticle.

Browsing amazon right now and I'm not too sure what I'm looking at. Many of them say they include "airgun rings" but I've got no clue if they're airgun rated....

Even the reviews and Q/A at the bottom of the page can't decide if it is or isn't airgun rated lmao

Edit: oh my... all of the scopes that actually seem suitable for the gun will cost just about as much as the gun! haha

Personal preference if you need the riser.

I do.

I went with a 1 inch. Lots of hate for cheap risers but I feel like as long as you use a good thread locker you're ok. If you use a quick disconnect and take it off often you could have zeroing issues. I had my TRS-25 zero'd @ 100 yards, took it off and then put it back on and it was still zero'd but you'll read stories about people with different experiences.

UTG super Slim Picatinny Riser Mount 1" High, 3 Slots https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01BI0I9AS/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_9riNzbNMMKDNA

That's the riser I have on a rifle with my TRS-25 right now and haven't had issues.

Frankly man, I like the TRS-25 and feel like it's a really good entry level dot but if you have the $ just go ahead and buy an EOTECH or viper.

I'm away from my computer but can look up a good deal on a viper for another $80 bucks if you want to wait a little bit and I'll link you to it.

Let me know.

My usual answer for someone seeking a budget scope: the Mueller Optics APV or APT. Lots of bang for the buck. The APV has a 1" tube, the APT has a 30mm tube. The APV:

http://www.amazon.com/Mueller-Rifle-Scope-Black-4-5-14/dp/B000SULCTA/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1377900727&sr=8-1&keywords=mueller+apv

The APT:

ETA: The Muellers have adjustable parallax.

u/DFu4ever · 1 pointr/ar15

A little while back I decided it was about time I built myself an AR-15, to fill that little corner of my collection that has been empty for too long. I was finally able to finish it earlier today.

Lower: Anderson Lower and LPK

Upper: Radical Firearms 16" 5.56 COMPLETE Upper w/ Radical Hybrid Rail

Optics: Vortex Optics Strikefire II Red/Green Dot w/ Cantilever Mount

Grip: Magpul MOE FDE

Stock: Magpul MOE-SL Carbine Stock FDE

Sights: Magpul MBUS Gen 2 Forward and Rear Flip Sights FDE

Forward Grip: Seekins Precision K20 Keymod Forward Grip FDE

Panels: Midwest Industries Keymod Panels

Outside of having to file the detent for the safety selector, and fighting like crazy to get the hammer pin past the J spring, the build went together fairly easily. There is a slight bit of slop between the lower and the upper, but its nothing I feel any desire to try and fix. It really is fine as it is.

u/juaquin · 1 pointr/guns

As far as I can tell, the engraving is done by laser so it's incredibly shallow. Feels smooth to the touch. Not enough depth to fill it in.

The light is an el-cheapo from Amazon - surprisingly bright and fits well. Wouldn't necessarily trust it for duty or carry but it works well enough for my purposes. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001BZPJRC

u/Jessie_James · 1 pointr/guns

I bought the 10/22 Takedown and it came with a nice case.

Get him a basic scope, it's fun at the range. I think this is the one I use - I had it laying around, threw it on, and it works perfectly. 1" grouping at 100 yards the first time I ever shot the rifle, and ever shot that range, basically completel noob.

Trigger locks are gimmicks. I bought several and was able to defeat them in seconds using basic hand tools. I don't trust them around my 4yo. Put it in your safe.

Get a basic cleaning kit. Cleaning it is half the fun.

Presenting it: My family always had this gag where they'd bring out a giant box ... with another box in it ... and on and on until it was something small and useless that was a hint to the real present. Maybe do that with a single .22 round, and then he gets to do it again with the rifle. If you get him the takedown, he will probably think it's a pistol. :)

It is a Burris Fastfire III. Initially, I planned to get the cowitness mount from cz-custom for true co-witness.
https://czcustom.com/cz-scorpion-evo-3-s1/evo-custom-parts/cz-scorpion-evo-rail-mount-ff3.html

Out of the box with the factory low mount (pictured), you can sort-of get a lower 1/3 cowitness... but getting a cheek-weld on the blade brace was challenging. So I scrapped that idea.
I started experimenting with this mount : https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01BI0I9AS/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o01_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

It allows use of the factory sights through the mount and gives a good height for the Fastfire with a cheek weld. Not sure if it's the final solution yet.

u/asdfman2000 · 1 pointr/ar15

Seconded on this. My wife and I both have this.

Recently got the Sig Romeo5 through a deal. The construction is great, but the dot reticle is kind of meh compared to the Holosun reticle.

For actual fun, I would go with some magnification. I have a Vortex 1-6x that is quite nice.

I'm mounting this on a '43 Izhevsk Ex-PU sniper. Mount is solid and the scope is clear. If you want to be cheap there is also a 3/8 in dovetail under the rear sight base. Use that scope though, you need the long eye relief. Pretty good reviews, and clear glass.

I just went through weeks of research to try and get a scope on my mosin and although I was on a budget I think I have a nice set up coming.
I used a rail to replace the rear sight and then bought a long eye relief scope. I spent $70 ish all total and I think it should be accurate to about 150 yards.

u/forGodcountryfamily5 · -1 pointsr/guns

I had the exact same problem as you. The best thing to do is buy the UTG airgun mount ( https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B002TUSJVQ/ref=mp_s_a_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1501040671&sr=8-2&pi=AC_SX236_SY340_FMwebp_QL65&keywords=utg+airgun&dpPl=1&dpID=41MDJhdhg3L&ref=plSrch ). For some reason normal dovetail rings dont like to grip the 795 so they start to slide back after a while, as you mentioned. So you have to use one of these types of scope mounts that squeezes the entire dovetail, so that you have enough traction to hold the scope in place.
