I've had this one for a couple years and I'm really pleased with it. Obviously it's not really redneck engineering, but I thought you may be interested.
For it to be safe, do this ^/s
Biggest issue with oc'ing laptops is heat, and it'll build up quickly since the components are in such a small space. You can do it, but for it to be considered safe, get a laptop cooling pad. I have this one and it kept my old laptop pretty cool when I used it (I didn't OC of course).
Even then, I'd only overclock it a little, not like you would in a desktop.
^ninja ^edit
Yo, did you check frozencpu? They have lots to choose from http://www.frozencpu.com/cat/l2/g8/c487/list/p1/Thermal_Interface-Thermal_Pads_Tape.html
Looks like amazon also has some
It depends on the way the vents on your laptop are set up. In either case, I’d recommend getting a cooling pad to set your laptop on to help. Laptops already get hot, so cooling pads almost always help in some sort of way, and they’re usually cheap ($15-$30).
You can just set the cooling pad over the mousepad, with the laptop onto of the cooling pad
Something like these two, but there’s plenty more to pick from
https://www.amazon.com/ENHANCE-Gaming-Cooling-Adjustable-Laptops/dp/B01I0OFHRI/
Or
https://www.amazon.com/10-15-6-Cooling-Portable-Adjustable-Setting/dp/B075TSFV9T/
Best bet is to undervolt the processor using Intel Extreme Tuning Utility and to prop up the back of the laptop with feet. It also would help to take the back cover off and blow out all of the dust.

If you really know what you're doing, you can repaste the processor and graphics card byfollowing this guide.

There isn't much the repair depot can do. If it's still under warranty, I've heard you can request a repair technician to come to your house and repaste it with thermal paste that you provide, but your mileage may vary. They can repaste it with their thermal paste, but buying something like Thermal Grizzly Kryonaut would work a lot better than their stuff.
When I didnt have cash for repair, I bought a USB powered fan to fit under the laptop to keep it cool. $14 on Amazon
https://www.amazon.com/Laptop-Cooler-Aicheson-Cooling-Powered/dp/B01KZALHGK/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&qid=1503950327&sr=8-4&keywords=usb+laptop+fan
This on a real desk... with space for his right arm.
You can get a laptop cooling pad or stand.
https://www.amazon.com/Cooler-Master-NotePal-PLUS-Performance/dp/B00CPZJP7M/ref=dp_ob_title_ce
What do you use for your desk cooling pad?
As for the Cooler Master NotePal X-Slim, it was one of the products I considered, but I decided to pass on it due to the fan issue you described, as well as the reported cable issues (people breaking it or hurting themselves on the pass-through connector's exposed metal edges).
I also considered the Thermaltake Massive23 LX ($24.99 @ Amazon or Newegg), but I wanted something smaller and more portable.
I ultimately settled on the Cooler Master NotePal X-Lite II ($15.99 @ Amazon) which has a removable mini USB cable (so I can replace it if it breaks), a two port USB 2.0 hub, and fan speed control. It's just the right size (330 x 251.2 x 28.2 mm) for a 14-inch laptop or a smaller 15-inch laptop (such as the new XPS 15 9550), but larger laptops may have to look elsewhere.
Do you have any complaints about that cooling pad? I was looking at the one you have, but I'm always suspicious of the dimensions Amazon lists and wanna make sure I get a pad that fits a 15r3 perfectly. I was also looking at this one https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0051GK6RA/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_yKcEyb088RXCX because it has vents off the front side, which would be perfect if I'm using it on my lap in bed (no need to worry about covering bottom vent)
Raise the back of your laptop to get more ventilation. This will help the cooling system to actually do its job. I use something like this on my 17 R4: https://www.amazon.com/Ergonomic-Aluminium-Portable-Foldable-Notebook/dp/B007BD16KC
Results: 10-20C lower temps.
Thermals : Watch one of the TrottleStop or Intel XTU tutorials on this sub. Here is one: https://youtu.be/K1srWgovdn8
I also suggest raising the back up a little bit. I bought these for when im gaming.

Then as far as storage goes, you can either offload games you don't play to an external (not the best option) or you can add an addition SSD. I bought a Samsung Evo 960/970 M.2 drive on Amazon and installed it myself. There are videos to help. I'll send you a link for that as well.
Here’s a fan: https://www.amazon.com/⭐KLIM-Wind-Laptop-Cooling-Pad/dp/B01M715BCV/ref=zg_bs_2243862011_10/144-2782105-3744958?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1&refRID=TRT3QRY6ZBJQQ0VEY3CX
I personally use this mouse, and have had a great experience with it:
https://www.amazon.com/Logitech-Lag-Free-Wireless-Gaming-Mouse/dp/B00E4MQODC/ref=mp_s_a_1_3?keywords=logitech+g602&qid=1565144639&s=gateway&sprefix=logitech+g&sr=8-3
This is the same thing I replied to, but I'm sending it to you so you see it
I have an ASUS G74SX and the specs are
RAM: 8 GB
HDD: 1TB
Processor: Intel Core I7 2.20 GHZ Dual-Quad

and was only $850, you will need a cooling pad though, I recommend this http://www.amazon.com/Gaming-Laptop-Cooling-Turbine-SGA-4000-KKNF1/dp/B004G603E2/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1370284439&sr=8-1&keywords=gaming+laptop+cooling+pad
If you don't need to be mobile with the heavy applications/gaming I highly recommend this cooling pad. I absolutely love it and it looks badass...
If you want to get the best performance you can, I would recommend getting a laptop cooling pad. When a computer had to do a lot of work it generates heat, in order to protect it self from overheating your computer will purposely slow it's self down. Getting a laptop cooling pad will help with heat generation and is the cheapest and easily thing you can do to get a performance boost from your laptop.
Cheapest decent looking one on Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01KZALHGK/
Highest rated one on Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01M715BCV/
The one I used to have (I liked it, it was good): https://www.amazon.com/dp/B002NU5O9C/
Its a laptop, their cooling systems get built up with dust and also the thermal compounds start to dry up and degrade. Try dusting it out as best you can with some compressed air and invest into a decent cooling pad of some sort. Something like this might do the trick https://www.amazon.com/Cooling-DreamSky-Portable-Powered-Notebook/dp/B00MVRBOIC/ref=sr_1_3?s=pc&ie=UTF8&qid=1469764139&sr=1-3-spons&keywords=laptop+cooler&psc=1
well i posted said comment shortly after this one hahah, this is the thing i was thinking of. you really need something like that to keep laptops cool after a certain point. also, you reallllly need to clean out the dust regularly so the cooling stuff can work and the laptop will last longer.
you should just buy a laptop cooling pad with fans. also, buy some canned air and clean your laptop if you haven't. taking them apart is a pain, but make a diagram of where you got what screws and don't lose any of them. (use cups or bowls)
when I used to use a shitty laptop, I bought this one for about $20. seems it was sold out since then and some douches are selling it for $90 for whatever reason.. http://www.amazon.com/Cooler-Master-NotePal-U2-Cooling/dp/B002SGATH8/
I don't even use it since I built my desktop and I'd be willing to sell it to you for the cost of shipping if you want.
I’ve never used a macbook, but I’ve seen another ask like this before about overheating. I think someone suggested a cooling pad like this one.
Oh, and for the lagging, there’s plenty of posts out there about cutting the lag down... most which consist of renaming your cc to exclude special characters like ( _ and what not. Try googling it. Good luck!
I bought this back in 2015. It's great, has a nice pad on the bottom, and has a UBS powered fan in it to help with cooling: https://www.amazon.com/Cooler-Master-NotePal-LapAir-R9-NBC-LPAR-GP/dp/B0051GK6RA/ref=sr_1_1?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1524969788&sr=1-1&keywords=R9-NBC-LPAR-GP
Shows up when you search "Laptop Legs" about 4-down. Showing now only 4 left in stock. Here is a link
https://www.amazon.com/LapWorks-Creates-ergonomic-elevations-notebook/dp/B000BZ4TYM
Thanks to the other people who replied to this thread, I found out that the game does, in fact, have a slider to adjust the scaling! I glossed over the settings because I assumed that all sliders were related to audio. However, Classic mode is still impossible to play, due to everything else remaining small and the zoom being disabled.
As for the lapboard, I'm actually using something that I'd purchased for my laptop a while back: a "laptop lap desk with pillow cushion", by Cooler Master (that particular model seems to be discontinued, though, and this is the one currently available - same size, different color).
It's not ideal. I can barely fit my Logitech wireless keyboard (K830) and mousepad (by Evoluent) on top of it. But I did some research last year, when I built my PC (I had been primarily a console gamer for the last decade), and all "true" lapboard options had terrible reviews. What seemed to be the better one - the Lapdog, by Corsair - is wired, which kinda defeats the purpose
So, I decided to wait and use what I already had as a temporary solution. Now, I'm considering getting this... thing, also by Corsair. The lapboard is available separately, but since it's made for that specific Corsair keyboard (the K63), it's not worth it if you already have your own device that you enjoy. The mousepad is integrated, so you also have to take that into consideration.
Paul (from Paul's Hardware YouTube channel) has a good video showing that product (and a few others). He starts using the setup at the 16:40 mark.
Absolutely agree there. I've only done that with a laptop connected to a TV, sitting on some sort of cooling pad
In this case, it looks like it will be a trip to the doctor...
I bought these for mine and they work great!
LapWorks Laptop Legs Easy to Apply Creates 2 ergonomic elevations that cool notebook (1 pair of legs) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B000BZ4TYM/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_tNoZBbC8YNAP0
I bought this for myself and my wife, they work pretty well. Mainly got it because it has padding underneath so it's not terribly uncomfortable.
Cooler Master NotePal LapAir - Laptop Lap Desk with Pillow Cushion and Cooling Fan (R9-NBC-LPAR-GP) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0051GK6RA/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_z2zVBb8RN6ZMG
(( This is the one I got, it works well, I like how the construction gives it plenty of air flow while also letting you move the fans where they are needed. ))
Im Pretty sure its a cooling issue with your laptop, basically the battery is heating up because the charger is trying trying to maintain the batteries level of charge, the heat isnt dissipating correctly, because most laptops werent designed with cooling in mind. You really need a cooling pad like this https://www.amazon.com/Thermaltake-MASSIVE-Cooling-Notebook-Laptop/dp/B00IGSATZY/ref=sr_1_3?s=pc&ie=UTF8&qid=1497591099&sr=1-3&keywords=laptop+cooling+pad&refinements=p_89%3AThermaltake
If you are going to be gaming on most laptops.
I've using these for over a year now and it works like a charm. For $6, I think the quality is superb.
Practical Laptop Cooling pad Rubber Skidproof feet Heat Reduction Stand for Notebook/iPad/Laptop(pack of 4) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0747QSX25/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_P4q1Cb3H5J4FN
I game exclusively on a couch with a laptop. I have a nice rigid mousepad and a chase lounger that I can extend my feet on. A cooling pad is necessary for any high demnad games as the laptop gets too hot otherwise. This is important, if you plan on actually keeping the laptop on your lap, get a cooler that has a pad built into it. If you don't, gaming will be extremely uncomfortable as most of them are made to sit on a desk and not a human lap.
I use this guy and it works great.

I have an awful Dell Studio XPS 16.
It overheats just by idling. Why? Because it only has one fan that is barely more than an inch wide and the exhaust vent is covered by the screen when you open it.
I picked an Antec Cooling Pad mostly because it was the only one designed for over 15" laptops at Staples when i was there. However it barely fits my laptop.
Still works well however, I have had very little heating problems since.
I misread what your dealing with. I have a laptop cooling pad underneath the console and two small computer usb fans on top. They both are blowing air into the vents very gently so the exhaust blower in the back doesnt get damaged. Ill upload a pic when i get a chance.
Nice! I think I may have to buy one so I can cool my laptop in full belta style.

I mean, if it will cool off the largest space vessel ever constructed, it should cool off my shitty old laptop, ke?
Give this one a shot if you want something specifically for your lap.
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0051GK6RA/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o02_s01?ie=UTF8&th=1
I personally use this one, but it stays on my desk. I'm happy with it. Keeps the laptop nice and cool even when gaming.

Not really, if its gets too hot the PC should shut down. If you use a desk often cooler master makes some laptop stands with fans in the bottom. http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B002SGATH8?pc_redir=1405565835&robot_redir=1
Most good laptop coolers require that they sit on a desk, especially the slim ones.
There are ones this the Cooler Master NotePal LapAir that I would suggest for you if you plan on using it while its actually on your lap.
It's specifically designed for it and has a padded bottom so it doesn't hurt your legs.
I just ordered this cooling pad which is supposed to get here in a couple of weeks even though I have prime. Thanks for the tips I think i'll do it tomorrow and watch a few vids on youtube.
Yeah, 80-90 was "normal" for me until I also popped a laptop cooler under the thing (I got this one, as it's not stupidly disproportionate to the size of the laptop):
https://smile.amazon.de/gp/product/B00CPZJP7M/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1
Phew, okay, i just wanted to make sure
It's really not something i can hear on my laptop unless i have my ear pressed against the keyboard or bottom of the laptop, so i'm not worried about it if it's normal!
I repasted mine with Thermal Grizzly right when i got it. I also bought these from amazon to give more room for cooling!
Try to elevate the back of your laptop for better ventilation and to help the cooling system work better.
I personally use this on my Alienware 17 R4: https://www.amazon.de/gp/product/B007BD16KC/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
I don't have Mass Effect Andromeda, but playing Overwatch brings the CPU temperatures to 90-100C. Using the laptop riser makes the CPU temperatures lower at about 65-75C.
This is what I use, it’s really nice because it’s customizable and folds up extremely small. Ergonomic Aluminium Portable Foldable Cooling X-Stand for 12"-17" Laptops, Notebook PC, MacBook https://www.amazon.com/dp/B007BD16KC?ref=yo_pop_ma_swf
It was still going upto 90+ until someone on here suggested this :
https://www.amazon.co.uk/Ergonomic-Aluminium-Portable-Foldable-Notebook/dp/B007BD16KC/ref=redir_mobile_desktop?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1&ref=yo_pop_d_yo_pop_d_pd_t2
And undervolted at -0.135 seems to have improved temps massively so obviously not ideal that the paste job was obviously pretty poor but oh well. I have been tempted to ring them to get them to replace the paste/pads but i’ll leave it for now
When I don't have access to my gaming rig I play on my ultrabook that I use for university. It only has a powersaving i5 and integrated intel graphic + 4GB RAM. The game works suprisingly well on all low/disabled and 1280x720 (instead of 1080p) at around 20-30fps. It is playable, but obviously far from ideal, but I can bear it for a day of two when I'm away from my rig. The issue with this is the same as yours: the temperatures. The ultrabook only has very small fans that don't really do anything at all. Using a cooling pad with some extra fans has worked fine, so you might want to check out some of those. They're not really expensive. The one I have costs 30$ and works very well. You can of course buy some of the more higher end solutions for this, but I don't know how much better they actually are.
Most laptops won't allow that. I'd rather indulge in an external cooler. Since I expect you to be near a power outlet already, this or this are a good options. A little Overkill but worth the money.
Foldable laptop feet are really amazing.
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07772JBX1?
As others have said, this seems like a GPU throttling issue. If it is GPU throttling, check if it is indeed temperature related or is it power.
I have a buddy who is getting into PC gaming, he got a decent gaming laptop a while back 2nd hand but it is having massive overheating problems, I am going to give it a dust/clean but was goign to get him one of them cooling pads
Another option is I could sell him my older gaming PC but I cant think on a fair price for both of us as on paper the specs are very close, but in reality with the cooling problems the laptop has the desktop preforms much better. Too expensive and it is not a worth wile upgrade, too cheap and I'm losing out.
Laptop
Desktop
Just a quick look, I'm thinking this one would be ideal for packing in backpack.
Ah... in that case, I guess you really can't upgrade too much. It should still be sufficient, though you'd do well to keep it on a flat surface like a lap desk, and use a cooling pad.
Personally, I use the Antec cooling pad, and find it does ok. The actual built in fan on my laptop never engages full speed when I use it (YMMV)
You could try one of these, they're cheap and work well

Something like this can always help a Laptop ;)
i have a 3 fan cooler master for my laptop. all my cables run underneath it. i guess im kind of cheating at this question because my mouse plugs in about 4 inches away from where my hand is.
Look for something that is going to work well with the positions of the vents on the laptop. If your intake vents are on the bottom of the laptop, I'd suggest something like the Cooler Master Notepad U2/U3. Especially because you can move the fans to line up with the intake vents. I have the U2 and it works very nicely. Although, I think the fact that the laptop is raised off a surface is more important than the actually fans. I saw temperatures drop about 6-8° C under load on my XPS 15 9550 just using the cooling stand, while turning the fans on only brought the temps down about 1-3° C.
https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B002SGATH8?fp=1&pc_redir=T1
If your exhaust fans are on the side of the laptop, maybe try on of those vacuum suction type coolers that pulls air out of the machine. Like this one:
https://www.amazon.com/LC05-Cooling-Auto-Temp-Detection-Compatible/dp/B00XKU47Y2
After doing a bunch of research, I came to the conclusion that there isn't a perfect cooler out there, you have to find what gives your specific laptop the best airflow. Hope this helps!
One resolution for lap use is one of these or something similar: http://www.amazon.com/Cooler-Master-Comforter-Cushion-C-HS02-KA/dp/B003XNB7U8
I used to use a Macbook at home until I found that.
I bought this one for the Lenovo Y540. You can choose where to place the fans, so it can be more effective (if placed properly) than normal cooling pads. Some people have also swapped the fans that came with it with Noctua fans lol.

Amazon
Fan swap
I have one of these sitting under my PS4.
I use one of these and it dropped my temps 15-18 degrees whilst gaming https://www.amazon.co.uk/Ergonomic-Aluminium-Portable-Foldable-Notebook/dp/B007BD16KC/ref=redir_mobile_desktop?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1&ref=yo_pop_d_yo_pop_d_pd_t2
This generally is a cooler issue, as being on a desk prevents air flow from ALL of your vents. Your best bet, if you're on a budget, is to get an external USB cooler. You can get a decent one for about $15. Here's one I personally recommend. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B075TSFV9T/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_YfZADbAMQF1KX
If you need an even MORE budget-saving option, use small objects to prop your laptop up. As long as there is space between the vents and the surface below it, you should see improvement.
I'm the guy who nearly tossed my x201 (2.67 Ghz i7 with turbo boost up to 3.3Ghz, 8gb ram, 256 gb SSD). About 6 months ago it started over-heating to the point of dying every twenty minutes. I had to have one of these monsters attached to the vent whenever I used it. That vacuum fan was a big hassle to carry around and meant I was 1 USB port down. About 3 months ago the internal wifi card stopped working so I bought one of these. Those tiny usb wifi cards suck because the antenna is so small, and that also meant I was another USB port down. Finally, the plastic door to my hard-drive bay cracked so my hard-drive kept slipping out in my back-pack.
I ended up buying thermal paste on amazon (~$10), a new wifi chip on ebay (~$8), a new fan (~$5) and a new hard-drive door (~$6). It took me about 3 hours to take the laptop apart, and another two to put it back together. I re-pasted the CPU, replaced the fan (just to be safe... the old one worked fine), and installed the new wifi card. I had to completely disassemble twice after completely re-assembling it (god that sucked) first because the power-port wasn't aligned with the chassis and plug would not go into the laptop, and second because I didn't run the wifi antenna cables very well. I still need to buy and install a new thermal pad for the GPU - I didn't order one because I didn't expect to find one in there (thought it would be all paste). The current GPU thermal pad is cracked and aging.
Anyway, now my x201 is back together and working like a charm. Wifi signal is great, and it runs nice and cool (~40 degrees idle - it's still breaking in). Ran 20 cycles of IntelBurnTest on "High" and it passed with flying colors. I have all of my USB ports available, battery lasts longer. And the SSD doesn't slip out of the bay all the time. All in all, definitely worth the effort and minimal money! Here she is in all her ThinkPad glory.
I dont think this will work as the fan vents are at the back.
I got this on for my ge62vr. It doesnt seem to do much. When I game my temps dont go over 70C, though it is only 60F in my house.
https://www.amazon.com/Thermaltake-MASSIVE-Cooling-Notebook-Laptop/dp/B00IGSATZY/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1487087863&sr=8-2&keywords=laptop+cooler+200mm
Yes, that one. (I paid full price tho - jeez Amazon tells me I bought it almost 3 years ago)
As I said above, like many powerful routers this one runs hot. Get a cheap USB-powered laptop cooling pad (even this cheapo is prob okay - https://smile.amazon.com/AICHESON-Cooling-Lightweight-Portable-Notebook/dp/B01KZALHGK/ref=sr_1_19?s=pc&ie=UTF8&qid=1540818198&sr=1-19&keywords=laptop+cooler) - pick one on noise level if it's going to be in an occupied room (mine is in a hallway, away from bedrooms).
I have a 15 year old cooling pad that I got from some random place plugged into the USB port on the router and it keeps the CPU temp down in the 40's (C) - uncooled the router will spike into the 80's. Cooled, the router will last much longer.
Good luck on the move and you're welcome.
Every laptop I've gamed on runs stupid hot, too hot to hold. Eventually i got a base cooling pad that works perfectly, though it does reduce the laptops mobility some.

With such a simple purchase and performance set to default, not gaming on Synapse, I’ve not only increased battery life, but also reduced the heat.
Is it getting hot in very specific places? Maybe just the cpu or gpu areas? I would look for a cooling pad that lets you move the fans to wherever you want so you can put one directly in the hottest areas. Maybe something like this: https://www.amazon.ca/Cooler-Master-NotePal-PLUS-Performance/dp/B00CPZJP7M/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1497319839&sr=8-1&keywords=laptop+cooling+pad+movable
That's indeed a thermal pad.
As with most things thermal, "necessary" is a grey area. Will it likely work without it in the short term? Yes. Could it potentially fail sooner? Also yes.
Personally I'd just buy a replacement - they aren't expensive. E.g. link.
the 2015 macbook Pro does have active cooling. If it's a pro you have, you might want to consider buying the screwdriver needed to take of the bottom cover, blow dust out of the radiator, and see if that works.
Of course, it also matters what surface it's on - if it's something that insulates, that's bad, if it's a metal table, that's good.
I've seen a lot of people reference this one, but I've never been in a situation where I needed it.
I've never seen any laptop cooling pad review where they do actual controlled repeatable tests, ever. Lots of reviews of the blinking lights, though. This one doesn't have a whole lot of RGB.
This is the current one I use

Fan stand
Maybe something like this would work for you
Finding that exact one might be a little difficult seeing that no retailer sells many replacement parts for that laptop. If you aren't looking for those ones specifically, either this one https://www.amazon.com/dp/B000BZ4TYM/ or this one https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07772JBX1/ might interest you.
Yeah, open it up, clean the radiator and fan exhaust. A note about cooling mats/pads/things the ones you put your laptop on only work well if you have a bottom exhaust or intake. If you have a side intake/exhaust get something similar to this
Something like this
Just few tips as we all do with alienware laptops :
Welcome to the club bro 😊
I hope i didn't forgot any other tips ,lets see if other users have more tips to help you
You need to get some type of Laptop fan/pad

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834992913
I found these on amazon! https://www.amazon.com/Cooling-Improves-performance-workstations-Alienware/dp/B07772JBX1/ref=sr_1_3?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1537769718&sr=1-3&keywords=laptop+cooling+feet
So this is the fight between specifications, price and quality/durability. Titanium version GPU it's better of course, you can check this GPU benchmark compare. In this price range both competitors are good, they have own pluses and minuses. Im thinking about durability so I would choose Dell, but if you need a beast with a good specifications you can go with Acer Nitro there is opportunities to cool laptop with cooling pads etc.
No problem :)
Also, I'd recommend getting some heatsinks for your VRMs and some thermal tape to stick them on. I've heard that the fan on the G12's predecessor the G10 hasn't been adequate for cooling them and that the heatsinks would make a huge difference in terms of temps. AFAIK, the same should apply for the G12 as not much has changed from the G10 in that regard. I'll leave a couple of links below for what you should get for your VRMs, as well as some advice from an expert on NZXT's liquid cooling brackets for graphics cards, which includes instructions on how to apply the thermal tape and heatsinks.

https://linustechtips.com/main/topic/233847-how-to-watercool-a-cpu-single-gpu-for-under-200-in-the-us/
While I have the prior gen laptop with the 8750h and GTX 1060 I was playing with temps tonight. I undervolted mine by bringing the core voltage offset down to -0.150V (keep in mind I have a different CPU). That brought it down from the low 90's to the low 80's. Then I propped up the back of the laptop with a Nintendo Switch game case to raise the back end of the laptop up maybe a half of an inch. This brought me down me down into the high 60's to low 70's. Try giving that a shot, just put something under the back of your laptop (without obstructing the intake fans) and see if that helps. It wasn't a huge surprise. I had an Alienware back around 2011 and I used this trick to lower the temps there as well. I'm actually considering something like the following to be a more permanent solution. https://www.amazon.com/Cooling-Improves-Performance-workstations-Alienware/dp/B07772JBX1/ref=sxin_1_ac_d_rm?ac_md=1-1-bGFwdG9wIGNvb2xpbmcgZmVldA%3D%3D-ac_d_rm&keywords=laptop+feet&pd_rd_i=B07772JBX1&pd_rd_r=c8137171-992f-42ee-ab69-54a973ce5bcc&pd_rd_w=bd6M9&pd_rd_wg=dgzX3&pf_rd_p=404c4843-2c96-4d0d-a5fe-2b0598693e61&pf_rd_r=0PQG2D7QHQ62X93GX6XX&qid=1567419378&s=gateway

I'm living in Germany so I got this:
https://www.amazon.de/gp/product/B01M715BCV/
but the exact same one from a different company can be bought in the United States, I actually got this tip from someone living in the US:
https://www.amazon.com/Tree-New-Bee-Cooling-15-6/dp/B016PMVM7Q/
Yeah dude, no worries. If you're really concerned get yourself a decent cooling pad for your laptop. I had this one for my laptop: https://www.amazon.ca/Thermaltake-Technoloy-Massive-Notebook-Cl-N002-PL12BL/dp/B00J0NZYOK
As long as you have unobstructed airflow, you won't have a problem. Laptops should run under the thermal limits without issue, and I often game on my laptop just on my knees or on a flat surface in bed with no issues.
Most of the time, cooling pads are complete placebos, and you can Google benchmarks that show that. If you have a laptop that exhausts heat from the side, you can get an Opolor, which actually sucks hot air out the side vent, effectively dropping the temperature.
However, a quick search shows that this one has the fan in it: https://www.amazon.com/Cooler-Master-NotePal-LapAir-R9-NBC-LPAR-GP/dp/B0051GK6RA#immersive-view_1480883541935
thanks for the info. i just found this surfing some similar discussions on notebookreview.com. have you noticed any temp changes with/without the Zalman?
Try to renew the thermal paste and thermal pads
thermal paste:

thermal pads:

I have a "hot" laptop also. One of the best things you can do is buy a powered notebook cooler and always keep the laptop on it. After trying out different ones, I swear by this Antec base: http://www.amazon.com/Antec-Notebook-Cooler-USB-Powered/dp/B0000BVYTV/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&qid=1345646536&sr=8-4&keywords=antec+fan+base
It has a metal grid top, with two powerful fans underneath, and runs off the USB slot. It really makes a big difference. Another thing you can do, any slots that have plastic "holders" (like card slots), take those out, to create more open spaces. And finally, always sit the computer, even on a fan base, on a hard surface. Also clean out the computer and base fans regularly.
I also have a mini "hot pad" I made to rest my left hand on, as that side tends to get hot while gaming...
If you go the laptop route and intend to use it as your primary computer, I cannot emphasize enough the importance of a laptop cooler. Twenty bucks will extend the life of your computer for about two or three more years.
Please remember to use the search feature. Most if not all of this has been answered recently in other posts.

>I have been having insanely jigh temps of 100c on my cpu. I have heard thag alienware’s thermal paste and application is a cause for this.
Yes and no. The 15R3 is a few years old now and thermal paste does not last forever, especially in laptops with lower mounting pressure. Dell's stock paste is built more for longevity and not performance so after some time it is pretty normal to need new paste to get the temps back under control. It's especially common in gaming laptops that run hot and have higher end hardware then your typical $500 laptop. Also if you have not tried a can of compressed air to blow out the fans / fins then that would be a good place to start. Even with fresh paste , if the fans are clogged then you will get high temps. >There is a local computer repair shop that said that they can repaste it, should i go to their shop and pay them to do it( i am not concerned for price and i have no idea how to do it, im worried that i will mess something up)
If your truly unable to do this yourself ( lots of people are ) then take it to someone and have them do it. Nothing worse then taking apart your $$$$ laptop and once it's back together something isn't working and you don't know where to start looking. On that note there are A LOT of tutorials , videos and teardowns online that can help you with this should you decide to tackle it on your own.
>Should i undervolt? How? And what do i set it to?
Absolutely you should, it's the easiest way to reduce temps and in some cases even improve performance as the CPU won't be running as hot which can allow for high boost speeds and higher sustained clocks. Despite what some have recently been claiming, undervolting will NOT void your warranty. As for what should you set it to, that is something YOU need to figure out. Every CPU is different and requires a different amount of voltage to remain stable. What works for someone else won't necessarily work for you. Your best bet is to start low and test to see if it's stable and then work your way up from there until you find your sweet spot. For example my 7820hk is stable at -.135 but some people can go higher, or not even get that far , it's all up to the silicone lottery.

>What paste should i use? I heard that thermal grizzly kryonaut is runny and can dry up at higher temps such as laptop tems so which one is best suited for this scenario( dont want to use lm because im not experienced enough and its risky)

Kryonaut is great paste, but it's not great for longevity in laptops that run hot and don't have great mounting pressure. I see a lot of people who use Kryonaut and it works GREAT...for a few weeks / months and then the temps start to creep up again. I have used Kryonaut in the past and it was just OK. I switched to IC Diamond around a year ago and my temps are just as good now as they were the first day I put it on AND my core differentials are almost non existent. Keep in mind that most pasts are going to be within just a few degrees of each other provided the repaste job is done properly. Going from Kryonaut to IC Diamond I actually saw a decrease in temps, probably due to mounting pressure and thinner paste , and I had to lay the Kryonaut on pretty thick. There are a ton of great pastes out there....IC Diamond, Gelid, Thermal Grizzly, Arctic MX-4, ...lots to choose from. This was a great comparison from a few years back showing the difference in a controlled test.

>Should i get a laptop stand
If you want to invest in something that two bottle caps can do just as well , sure? I think a better question is do you need a laptop stand? You can get the same results by just propping the back up with basically whatever you think will work. I do use a coolermaster U3 , but mostly because I sit on my couch with my laptop on my lap and the stand keeps it raised while still being comfortable. I also have a set of something like this and they work just as well when I don't feel like dragging around my cooling pad. Don't believe all the hype about the cooling fans in the coolers either, the stock fans are not really good for much TBH.
You do have some pretty practical things on your wish. I'll try to keep my choices under $75 in case you really want something, that way you can buy it right away (or even buy a few things at one time)!
I may add more stuff to the list, but you get the point! Go for important, but also fun, stuff!
Surprise me and pick anything from my wishlist! :D
Go Ben
This to make your laptopping more pleasent and still have money to get adorable Ukulele!
You'll still have $12.12 to get yourself something of your high priority list or whatever you've really had your eye on! If I gifted someone a gift card, I would just want them to really treat themselves!

I think I got this.

I am currently using the more standard one from Cooler Master and it works great. However, my laptop emits heat solely from the bottom panel (100% efficiency) so you should check your laptop's vent placement.
Definitely! In fact, if you're going to be using it as your primary driver and doing heavy duty gaming or CPU intensive tasks, I would highly recommend a cooler mat to help lower noise and extend the life of the case fans. Here's a link to the one I have:
AVANTEK 15"-17" Ultra Slim Laptop Cooling Pad Cooler 2 Quiet Fans Laptop Chill Mat with Dual USB Ports and LED Lights
I started playing on PS4 but realized it was basically cross-buy with PC and started playing on PC. Don't like playing with a controller so not going back.
For cooling I got this guy on a whim and it works well.

Seems to maintain most of my temps at a decent level. Typically GPU peaks at 77c - it's 30 degree+ weather here though and I don't have AC.
I have a thermaltake and according to its heat sensors it makes about a 10 degree difference. I can max out almost all the settings on the wither 3 with a 970m when I'm using my cooler so it works very well for the price. https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B00J0NZYOK/ref=mp_s_a_1_1?qid=1466045722&sr=8-1&pi=SX200_QL40&keywords=thermaltake+laptop+cooler.

I have this one and it's pretty bad ass:

A laptop stand LINK dropped my GPU temps by 10c, I am running a GTX 1080 and never goes over 61c (Average is 58c)
Approximately a 15 deg (C) drop on both . Plus I added these to the bottom and have seen the fans don't have to work as hard for hot air to get out.
Oi guys, get this:
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00EQ23OQA/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
Should help with the issue.
Definitely get a cooling pad, I have this one http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B00CPZJP7M?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_detailpage_o07_s00 the fans can be moved around underneath to get at the hot spots
http://amzn.com/B0000BVYTV
I had issues with games and my laptop shutting off on hot days, this reduced the GPU temperatures from 80-85C (around the temp they shutoff) to around 70C usually. I see around a 10C drop which helps. (I think most of the heat loss is from the fact that it has an aluminum base that acts as a heatsink).
People who bought Oryx pro also bought this portable cooling pad.
