I mixed up your response above and for some reason I though you preferred the "busy" watch. Sorry, here's a better reply for simpler styled watches:

Tissot again makes some simpler watches. The Le Locle (linked) is one of their trademark pieces that is a bit above your price range but is certainly timeless. It is more expensive because it is automatic and not battery powered, but they make similar quartz movement watches.

Seiko's simpler watches are nothing special, but their dive watches are very popular among watch collectors, especially the "Sumo" and "Marine Master" models which are more expensive than your budget allows. These are definitely "casual" watches which could be worn every day, whereas the Tissot might trend on too formal.

The Bulova Precisionist series is probably too busy if you preferred the simple model I originally linked; I've been waiting forever for them to make a conservative, simple Precisionist to add to my collection to no avail. The original one I linked is probably the simplest one they make.

Another option, stepping outside the three brands I originally picked, would be to go with a Hamilton. This is a historic American brand, now owned by the same company as Tissot. Their quartz movement watches start at just under $300. Many of these are military styled but they make some slightly dressier, very simple ones as well.

I'll leave you with one last option which is often overlooked, and that is a Chinese brand called Orient. They are very affordable, much under your budget, and while they are not built as well as fine Swiss watches they are certainly good watches from a dedicated watch maker. They tend to be popular as an affordable mechanical watch brand, and I have no personal experience with their quartz watches, but they have a fairly dedicated fan base so they are probably worth checking out.

As a watch nerd I would rank the Hamilton watches as head and shoulders above the others, but in your price range your options are more limited stylistically.

Hey nice looking watch man! All I know is that it uses a Japanese Miyota quartz movement, a common quartz movement in today's watches. Nixon is mostly associated with skaters. surfers, snowboarders, and other street sports of similar kind. As others have said though, they do not get much love around /r/Watches because they are considered a fashion brand. My first watch was a Nixon Timeteller years ago. It was good, then I lost it. Then I found it again recently.

Watch collecting can be as expensive or as cheap as you want it to be. If you lurk around this sub for a while you'll see lots of different styles in all different price ranges. I love watches, but at the point in my life that I'm at right now (that being a broke college kid), I promised myself to stay in the sub $200 range for the time being. Learn the difference between quartz and mechanical first if you don't already, then here are some commonly referenced budget options out there:

There are so many more too! It really pulls you in once you scratch the surface. There's something for everybody here. Welcome to the hobby (cough addiction cough)!

Edit I always forget to mention the Vostok Amphibia. It's a Russian dive watch, built like a tank, and there are many bezel/dial combos. Found on Ebay for about $70.

Costco had Seiko solar chronograph watches in stainless steel for $50 several years ago. I bought 20. Still have the same one on my wrist. Never take it off. No problems. I've given away like 8 of them as gifts, but that was a deal of a lifetime.

Edit: this was the watch. Just an awesome watch . . . for $50. I should have bought 100.

I ctrl-f'd 'watch' and got nothing, so here goes my rant:

WEAR A WATCH.

Yes, your phone can tell you the time. But being able to turn your wrist over to give or check the time is so much more elegant than fishing through your pocket, pulling out your keys, putting them back in, digging out your phone, turning your screen on for a split second, turning it off and then stuffing it back into your pocket.

Your watch doesn't have to be crafted by a master artisan in the Swiss Alps (but that's cool if it is) and it doesn't have to cost more than a small house. You can have a simple Timex for $30 on Amazon with a NATO band that can easily be replaced with another band of any color or pattern you want. This Skagen is wafer-thin and looks at home at the office or out on the town. Prefer an automatic but don't want to break the bank? Bang. You can even get a diver that most people would mistake for a Rolex/much more expensive watch for less than $50.

Wearing a nice watch ties together a wardrobe. It's the cherry on top of a sundae, the salt (or sugar) on the rim of a margarita. So wear one.

I am a moderator at /r/Watches. I wrote about six paragraphs and Alien Blue crashed. I will edit this post tomorrow Morning EST will dump more info than you will ever need.

Short answer: G-shock.

Long answer: Luminox Recon.

EDIT: OK, jeez! Sorry that I have a job to do besides moderate a sub and edit posts from the night before...

Basically, G-Shocks are the go-to choice for military and law enforcement. They are super rugged and are actually difficult to break on purpose. I wear a GR7900KG-3 (pictured elsewhere in the comments), that is a limited edition colorway of OD green and orange with an inverted screen. The non-limited edition of my watch, the GW7900B-1 has a laundry list of great features: it's solar-powered, has a perpetual calendar (automatically adjusts for different length months like February), tide graph, dual time, time-zome adjustment, 200m depth water resistence, uses one of G-Shocks better anti-shock systems, (edit: there are about 15 other features that I'm not listing) and the best feature of all... it uses radio synchonization to set the time for you, based off of the nearest atomic clocks located around the world.

There is also the much more affordable, original G-Shock. They make a "reissue" of it called the DW5600E-1V. It's not going to give you any of the fancy features, but it is tough as hell and will probably survive getting run over by a tank. It's also 1/3rd the cost of the 7900.

Obviously there are a million G-Shocks to choose from. These are just my personal suggestion and the most common, inexpensive suggestion. However, you said "nice watch." I wouldn't field a "nice watch" airsofting (I use my G-Shock), but if you wanted to, and wanted to have it be presentable the rest of the time it spends on your wrist, I suggest a Luminox Recon Point Man.

The most important difference here over other Luminox watches is the sapphire glass crystal. Unless they are shooting BBs made of jagged diamonds, it isn't going to harm your watch. A regular mineral crystal can shatter from the force of taking a round. Unless they shoot your watch directly from about 15 feet away, nothing is going to break a sapphire crystal. The Recon Point man just so happens to have a sapphire glass crystal.

It comes in the colors:

  • Red with a polyurathane strap
  • Green with a green NATO/hybrid strap
  • Blue with a gray NATO/hybrid strap
  • There are also version of each color with the walking tachymeter in kilometers instead of miles.

I have a Luminox (pictured elsewhere in the comments) with their proprietary NATO/hybrid strap. It is not a normal NATO strap, and it is not a normal Zulu strap. It takes the best features of both of these designs and merges them into their own proprietary thing. It is hands down the best nylon watch strap I've ever seen.

The most important feature of a Luminox watch is the tritium gas tube lume. There are tiny tubes marking the hands and hour positions that constantly glow because the tritium isotope contained inside the tubes is radioactive. Tritium is commonly used in firearms sights, and provides the best nighttime and low-light visibilty. It's awesome. Now, the Recon is a polycarbonate case, whereas my Black Ops (discontinued, now called the ANU) is 316L steel PVD coated black. Poly watches aren't bad, they are just different. It will feel light and... just not as strong. Then again, G-Shocks are the same way, so really you aren't losing out on anything. So I assure you that the PC-cased Recon is in fact tough as hell.

It will also serve as a conversation piece. A common thing for a watch is to make a statement. The kid flipping burgers wears a G-Shock. Not to say this should matter, but it does when discussing an accent piece such as a watch. It's like saying there isn't a difference between real gear and airsoft brand gear - there is undeniably a caché that goes with the more expensive stuff.

So, all in all, I recommend the Luminox Recon.

Hey OP,

I personally do not like Daniel Wellington as it is more of a fashion watch that takes classic styling from other brands. You buy a Daniel Wellington for "brand name" (even though it has no really history in watchmaking).

I would recommend entry level dress watch companies like Seiko or Tissot as they will fit the budget, are well renowned/ loved, and have plenty of options to choose from.

I found these peices on Amazon that fit the dress and minimalist style as the Daniel Wellington and under your budget:

Please don't get that Uniform Wares watch. It's an incredibly overpriced fashion quartz piece of shit. For the same price (even cheaper) you can get a Junkers Bauhaus Automatic (https://www.amazon.com/JUNKERS-Watches-Junkers-Bauhaus-6060-5/dp/B0066GKTM6)

Size: 41mm

Description: Affordable quartz movement in the style of an Omega Speedmaster. Few different models and colors to choose from.

u/runawaygrape · 10 pointsr/Watches

You may be interested in a Hamilton Khaki Field Automatic which can be had on Amazon for less than $400. It uses a Swiss ETA movement similar to the Stowa. In some ways, it meets in the middle between Stowa and Seiko in terms of price and quality.

Generally, for more expensive pieces, you're paying for the finishing and quality of the components, as well as the horological significance of the brand. Whether or not these things are worth it to you will depend on how much you value that sort of thing, and how much disposable income you have. I'm a student and I love my SNK809 and SKX013. I would be thrilled to own a $5000 watch, but at this point in my life, there are better things for me to spend my money on than a high-end Swiss timepiece. Perhaps when I reach a career milestone a few years down the road, I may decide to pull the trigger on a Rolex or Omega, but until then, I'll wholeheartedly enjoy my Seikos.

u/susuhead · 9 pointsr/Watches

Is this going to be a dressy watch for formal/special occasions? Or are you looking for a daily wear watch?

If the former latter, then perhaps a hard-wearing quartz is a good idea. If you want something special, but that you'll have to take care of, then your budget could easily allow you a dressier mechanical watch (auto or hand wound).

In fact, fuck it, here's a list of shit I dug up. I love internet-window-shopping:

Young-looking Seiko automatic diver

Hamilton Khaki

Another (larger) Hamilton Khaki

Khaki Pilot (very diver/aviator-esque look)

A Tissot auto chrono

A fairly dressy Hamilton

A nice and clean sporty Tissot

A rather large but eye-catching Hamilton

Yes, I know I went kinda overboard on the Hamiltons, but I was working off the impression your watch example and fondness for divers gave me.

EDIT: got my former/latter mixed up. I blame Mr. Walker's magnificent amber restorative.

Don't waste your money on cheap watches.

Anything sold and fulfilled by Amazon is usually fine. They have great customer service and usually pretty legit dealers. I bought this Tissot last week from them and it actually ended up coming from Jomashop. It was $215 at the time too.

u/conrad_blunder · 9 pointsr/Watches

The only thing I can think of in your price range is the Rodina Small Seconds. However it doesn't have a large second hand

The Junkers Bauhaus 6060-5 is more like the Junghans but is a bit more expensive. I got the black face version for $550 CAD.

First off, congratulations on your impending graduation! Secondly, good on you for wanting to do you research into a watch before dropping that sort of money on one.

I will say, your stipulation of a work and play watch made this a fun search for me. I tried to find brands that I had researched well into and felt good enough about to suggest for you and ones that had a reliable name. Of those i have four brands you may like (arranged from highest to lowest in price and last is a leather one)[Brands will be italicized and the watches themselves will be bolded for viewing sake]:

  1. Hamilton is a very notable brand and this watch is what some consider to be their "grail watch." At $590 is the Hamilton Jazzmaster. It is simplistic for that business/work aspect, has personality, and i felt the complications added to the play part of its appeal. It is 10mm thick so it would sit well on any wrist and not interfere with a suit or long sleeve shirt; at 44mm wide it isn't too big for most wrists either.

  2. Orient has some lower end watches that are very much loved by this community and i have felt that this one maintains that quality. For your consideration at $417 is the Orient 22-Jewel Automatic which has a couple complications to not make the face so busy, a lovely face design, and its style seems a little more inclined to be dressy but it would be well suited as a casual watch. It is 12mm thick so nearing what some consider to be "too thick" and it is 40.40mm wide which makes it smaller than the Hamilton Jazzmaster which makes it nice for people with small wrists but on larger ones it would look a little off.

  3. TX is Timex's higher end brand which may give you some peace of mind with a name brand but some would be a little wary because it is Timex. Nonetheless at $300 this is one watch you wouldn't feel too bad about scuffing up slightly, the TX classic Fly-Back. A few complications, lovely blue second hand to draw but not captivate you attention, and simple face with only the complications adding to its personality. At 13mm thick this is the thickest one of the bunch and with a diameter of 44.5mm it certainly isn't the smallest. It pushes the limits of my suggestions but i figured you deserved a ranged of watches to compare.

  4. Junkers (pronounced YOO-nkers) is my personal favorite. This watch brand has been on my radar since i started looking at watches and since it is German made you can be assured of its quality. At $549 the Junkers Bauhaus is a favorite of some people in this community and every time it gets posted you can be assured an angel has gotten its wings. A very simple face (the bauhaus style), a few complications, and a nice appeal to it make it an all around wonderful watch. At 10mm thick and 40mm wide it fit best into the "butter zone" pf watches that aren't too big or too small, but just right. The company that makes these also makes the Zepplin brand mentioned by u/ThisTitleisUseless.

Other notable brands that didn't strike a fancy with me but may with you are Tissot and Citizen. Please feel inclined to look through other watches each brand offers and do your research on each one. You can usually find out a lot about particular brands through a quick Google search. All of the brands i have suggested for you are on my wishlist in some form or another and my fiancee says that my list is never ending so if you would like any other suggestions i am happy to oblige.

    Good luck choosing a watch!

Orient has the Ray II and Mako II which are very similar. Same movement and features, and they each come in black and blue versions (I linked the blue ones because I like them, but its easy to find the black if that's your preference). An older model will be almost the same, but not have the hacking or hand-winding movement, and they have a pushbutton at the 2 o' clock. They might be a bit cheaper on Amazon though so that's your call.

u/STLCouple · 7 pointsr/Watches

Orient Ray II in blue, otherwise known as the Blueray II. Great 200m diver with a blue sunburst dial, a blue bezel, Orient's in house automatic movmement with hacking and manual winding ability.

sea-gull mi182sk This one is my favorite. it was the first one that I ordered. Then I thought "I need something cleaner too"

So I got the skagen skw6103. Then I was like, "but what if I don't wanna dress up but I don't want something too busy. I do like the gears though..."

so i got the orient esteem. And I was pretty sure I was done.

Then I saw wooden watches. They're kinda goofy and kitschy, but this one by wonbee looked alright, and it was only $20. So I got a fun goofy watch. It's cheap, I know that. but I think its neat.

Yep. last week I was watchless. now I have a collection. I love every one of them. They're not super pricey or fancy, but I love them. The look of each of them is "me" in its own way. I couldn't be happier. but I spent too much money getting here. So now the hobby is on hold for a while. Maybe my next prospect will be a "fancy pants" watch. One I have to save up a few thousand of walking around money to purchase. That'll put the hobby to bed for a while.

no it won't.

Citizen Men's BL5250-02L Eco-Drive Perpetual Calendar Chronograph Watch

Stock Photo | Photo of Item

Asking Price: $180 shipped | Amazon Price: $240

Received this watch as a birthday present from my parents a few weeks ago. Still have the box and manuals to go with it. No scratches or damage, very good condition. The strap you see in my picture is one that I bought and changed myself, so I still have the strap that came with the watch (the one in the stock photo) which is literally still brand new (haven't used it once). Please let me know if you would like a better picture, the one I took has pretty bad lighting because I was in a hurry this morning. One thing to note is that the stock photo has the dial with a relatively bright blue color, but the actual color of the dial is more darker blue and could be even seen as almost black.

Also to note: Completely solar powered and the hands also glow in the dark. Has stopwatch/timer setting and any other functions that normally come with a chronograph watch.

It's a beautiful watch, I only sell it because I think I might want to buy a more dressier watch for the money.

Great movement from a good brand, available in several color combinations. Don't own one yet but I plan on it. Fantastic watch and a beautiful piece.

Hamilton Field Khaki Auto 42mm
http://www.amazon.com/Hamilton-H70555533-Khaki-Field-Black/dp/B000EQ0BM2
Another fantastic piece. Very very versatile, not really sure if it's your style as its more of a military design but it's built like a tank and has a very iconic history. The Hamilton field Khaki was commonly worn in WW2 and a couple other wars. Same great movement as the Tissot, highly recommended.

Obris Morgan Explorer II
http://www.obrismorgan.com/explorerii.html
Going a completely different direction is a divers watch. Also very versatile and sporty at the same time. This one is from a smaller brand but it has a very respectable movement in it and the brand has been highly regarded in what they have put out. While it is the cheapest that doesn't mean it's the worst by any means it's just the best value of the three. It comes with a Miyota 9015 which is just as good if not better as the ETA 2824 which the other two have and a sapphire crystal. It's a great value if you like the looks of it I would highly recommend it.

While I wouldn't recommend the Versace or really any fashion brand at all it's your choice in the end. If you like it but it, wear it, and love it but I would highly recommend any of the three above. There's plenty of options out there but these three should give you a good variety. If I had $1100 to spend on watch(es) I would buy these three in a heart beat because with these three you would have a watch for every possible occasion in your life. Obviously you're not going to buy all three but any of these three are versatile enough to wear pretty much anywhere. Best of luck!

There is the Citizen Stilleto that might be what you're after. Not sure what your budget is though but you can probably get this cheaper than from Amazon.

Oooh, this is a fun challenge.

  • Knife: Spyderco Dragonfly 2 : $49

This is the most expensive item on my list, but I figure that with knives this is the best small EDC knife you can get for the money. I'm not a fan of large knives for daily carry, and the Dragonfly gets the job done.

  • Watch: Casio Men's Sport Analog Dive Watch : $17

While I initial thought was the F-91W, this watch seems to have far better water-resistance for roughly $7 more. Plus I prefer analog watches.

  • Wallet: Magpul Industries Daka Polymer Wallet : $17

While I've never used one of these personally, why not take the loss of all my stuff as an excuse to pare down how much bullshit I carry in my wallet? Reviews (outside of Amazon) seem pretty good and I'd love to give this thing a shot.

  • Multitool: Atwood Prybaby Chinese Knockoff : $3

I like having one of these kinds of dumb little multitools handy for prying and bottle-opening and other random tasks that I wouldn't want to abuse my knife with. At only $3 it's worth the space in my budget and my keychain. Speaking of keychains...

  • Keychain: Stainless Steel Aircraft Cable Keychain : $2

If you're like me, you often have to add and remove keys and other items from your keychain. Wire/cable keychains are the friggin best for this. I generally prefer the ball-and-socket types rather than the kind that screw closed, but I'm counting my dollars here.

  • Writing Utensil: Pilot G2 0.5mm (12-Pieces) : $10.75 per 12, ~$1 per ea.

I can't stand pens that use caps, and nothing writes as well for me as the Pilot G2. 0.5mm is about as fine a line as I want to get because the 0.38mm ones tend to get a bit scratchy on most paper. And if you'll allow me to count the cost as only a dollar rather than the price of a twelve-pack...

  • Bonus Round: Kingston Digital 32GB USB 2.0 Flash Drive : $9

With a few extra buck open in the budget, I realized that I've had one of these on my keychain for about as long as I can remember, and it pays to have one handy with a copy of your choice of documents, music, and other media. Super handy to keep available at all times.

    --

My total price for these tools puts me at $98, assuming the cost of only one pen. I assumed that I would be able to keep my phone, which provides me with enough illumination that I've never bothered with carrying a dedicated flashlight outside of the colder months when I'm usually wearing a coat. So I didn't bother with choosing one for this challenge. Anyone have any good suggestions for AAA, clicky tail-button flashlights under $20?
u/kroopster · 5 pointsr/Watches

Gotta agree with the other comments in here, the argument could be made for basically anything in life.

Anyhow I still try: How'bout spending that 400 into something you can liquidate easily later on? I'm not talking about profit, but it might make the purchasing easier if you know that you can sell it later for even $300? And if you really like it a lot, then you'll be just happy forever.

In that case the Junkers you linked might not be the easiest watch to sell, the automatic version could move faster but it's quite a lot more expensive. Just as an example, there are watches like Seiko Cocktail time which are in your price point and would be really easy to resell.

edits: ~200 typos.

u/a_ninja_mouse · 5 pointsr/Watches

Hope this Junkers Bauhaus will do the trick.

At this price point it's a quartz movement, but nevertheless, an elegant, classical quality piece.

u/SgtKashim · 5 pointsr/Watches

I'm extremely happy with my Citizen. Mine happens to be one of their "Drive" line, and it has an eco-drive movement. Eco-Drive means it's a quartz watch, powered by a solar panel. In theory you never have to change the battery. While mine has a metal bracelet, you can get similar watches with leather bands. The full collection is here. MSRP's shown there are misleading - I paid $149 for mine.

I'll also second the Seiko SKX007 (and SKX009) mentioned in other comments, one of those will probably be my next. The Seiko 5 series also gets some following here - it's about the cheapest you can get a serviceable automatic. The Seiko 5 is available in a pile of different colors and configurations for ~$55 to $80 depending on options. I've also been eyeing some of the Seiko Solar Dive Watches, but that's mostly because I'm looking specifically for a watch as a backup SCUBA timer. Orient also has a big line of fine looking mechanical watches, and they seem well-regarded around these parts of the internet.

Just to clarify (since I don't see a preference listed in your post...) - There are two major kinds of watch systems. Watch people call these 'Movements' - basically how does the watch keep time. You can either have Quartz, or Mechanical.

Quartz watches use a vibrating quartz crystal and a computer, then spit out the time on either a digital or mechanical dial. Within Quartz, you have battery drive quartz, solar quartz (eco-drive), and "Kinetic", where moving your hand generates electricity to power the watch.

Mechanical watches use a tiny rotating balance wheel to take the place of a pendulum, and use power for a wound-up spring to run a purely mechanical system of gears and levers and stuff to run the watch. Mechanical watches come in (mostly) two flavors - Automatic and Manual. Manuals you wind the spring by hand (think old pocket-watch), and automatics have a clever little weight inside them that automatically winds the spring as you move your arm around.

I like the idea of mechanical watches a lot. The knowledge that there's a bunch of tiny little gears and springs and levers all riding on jeweled bearings whirring away on my wrist just makes me super happy. Way more so than the steady electronic ticking of a quartz watch. But I'm also kind-of odd about things like that, so... If mechanical is important to you, you'll want to be looking for an automatic. If you just want a watch, I'd include the solars and kinetics - but I'd avoid anything battery driven.

u/beardtamer · 5 pointsr/Watches

This has a different color scheme, but a similar diver bezel. The solar seiko line is really pretty good imo if you are ok with quartz.

This one is more or less a similar color profile, but with a leather strap. I quite like it but it's up to you.

There are a butt-ton of others, it just take a bit of looking. It's hard for me to know what parts of the style is specifically the part you want. Do you want a "diver" look with a bezel, do you just like Rose gold accents, do you need a white face? Ect.

u/purabc · 5 pointsr/Watches

So, I just received my 'first' ever watch in the mail today! I've owned a cheap G-shock and a Scuderia Ferarri Watch before, but I don't consider them as 'watches'.

So at the age of 16 I've purchased my first ever watch and it is a Casio Edifice EF-503D-7A. I absolutely fell in love with this when I first started looking at watches sometime last year and although it was a tough decision Between the black and the white dial I settled on the white dial as it was my original choice. My friends and family tried convincing me to get the black dial since they thought it would suit me better since they thought the white one suits older men. But after a tough decision I settled on this and finally managed to pick it up a whole month after I ordered it! (I accidentally messed up my shipping address and it took a little while longer for it to get here : / ) but it has arrived! And here are photos of my unboxing

I know it's a cheap watch, but it's my first watch, the beginning of a new hobby and hopefully the beginning of a collection :D

p.s i will post pictures of it once I change the strap in the next couple of days so look forward to that :)

Thanks man! Yeah, the new one from Spectre is pretty damn nice, I got lucky enough to see the same model at an Omega dealer a few weeks ago and it was gorgeous.

Absolutely nothing wrong with an $80 watch though, I've funneled a ton of money into the more affordable ones to love and cherish until I could get this one. If I can make a recommendation, the best one I ever got for the cost was the Orient Ray. Here's the newer version of it on Amazon, cannot recommend it enough!

I want to recommend the $40 Casio MDV106. I have one as my knock-around watch. My only reservation is the crystal. It's cheap something, and has scratched up fairly easily. And with your lifestyle that may be a deal breaker. It's fine for a $40 watch, but could possibly be too scratched up for you. It's a great watch otherwise. https://www.amazon.com/Casio-MDV106-1AV-Stainless-Steel-Watch/dp/B009KYJAJY

I don't know if the olive green is Army specific, or if it is also relevant to Marines – but the Victorinox INOX in green would be pretty cool: http://www.jomashop.com/victorinox-watch-241683-1.html

A cool Seiko, that's probably top of budget if SKX007 is the baseline, is the SBDN023. It's the new solar Tuna. There are a few color ways, but I'm linking the one that matches the SKX007 color which also seems to be the cheapest. Very cool watch. Wish I had a reason to own it. http://www.shoppinginjapan.net/lowercase-sbdn023

Another cool top of budget Seiko could be the SUN019. It's a horse of a watch, another I wish I had an excuse to own. Kinetic, which should be OK, but do google around and see if they stand up to physical abuse. https://www.amazon.com/Seiko-Prospex-SUN019-Kinetic-Divers/dp/B00MCB9CJK

And as far as quartz divers go, Citizen's EcoDrive gives you a bunch of options.

Seiko Prospex Solar SSC017

Price: $180-$240

Movement: Solar Quartz V175

Style: Diver, Chronograph

Size: 43 mm ( not including the crown )

Link: Amazon SSC017 - black w/ blue , Amazon SSC015 - black w/ red , Amazon SSC031 - pepsi

Description: This is probably the most tool-tastic Seiko in this price range. It offers all the features of a dive watch, and it is ISO6425 certified, but it also has a full featured chronograph, complete with screwdown locks for the pushers. A number of people are not sold on the solar movement, but it is quartz accurate and durable. The bracelet is about the best Seiko bracelet I have seen anywhere close to this price, and it has a dive extension. Some people think the bracelet should have be 22mm, but I think the 20mm helps it wear a bit smaller. There are some other models that come on rubber straps, that for some reason are way more expensive, but they have some black with yellow options.

I'm glad to see someone on here that isn't automatically suggesting some flieger styled auto. Yeah they're awesome and have a history of being a pilot watch, but honestly something quartz is much better suited for actual flying. I'd recommend something like a Citizen Nighthawk or a Seiko SNA411. Recommending an automatic old school flieger to an actual pilot is sort of like recommending an M1 Garand to a modern infantryman.

A couple of questions: do you care about the movement (mechanical/automatic vs quartz)? Do you want a sporty watch or more of a dress watch?

My first recommendation is the Citizen Eco drive perpetual

This one, http://www.amazon.com/Citizen-BL5250-02L-Eco-Drive-Leather-Titanium/dp/B000EQS0WK is pretty sweet, has the tach on leather strap. But, no sapphire crystal.

Throw in $12/ea for replacement silicone bands and you almost all match!

u/SirLaxer · 3 pointsr/Watches

Exactly. A watch is like a pair of shoes: you wouldn't wear penny loafers when going out for a run, and you wouldn't wear sneakers at a funeral. There are a ton of different kinds of watches (like the Rolex Submariner compared to an Omega Speedster...different functions for different types of people and different activities), and within those categories there are different stylistic choices that are based on personal tastes (modern and sleek, big and bulky, etc).

I could recommend something like the Hamilton Khaki Field, or something like a Seiko diver, or a Citizen Eco-Drive chronograph, or the popular Seiko SARB065. Very different watches for different types of people and different occasions.

u/belugarooster · 3 pointsr/Watches

Sorry I couldn't provide details earlier, I've been busy with work.

The watch is a Citizen BL5250-02L. I've always wanted an Eco-Drive and decided to pull the trigger on this one as a birthday gift to myself. It's just so beautiful! If you're looking for nice quartz in the $250 range, I highly recommend this watch.

That style is called a field watch, based on classic military models dating back to WW2. Here's a couple that I like that are a little smaller and a little cheaper. Both automatic, both Swiss companies (ETA movements).

Hamilton Khaki

Victorinox Infantry

u/h2g2Ben · 3 pointsr/malefashionadvice

Retail price on the Khakis isn't terribly far out of your price range - they're great american made watches.

u/GiantTortoise · 3 pointsr/Watches

What models are you looking at? Looks like most Khaki's I see on there have an average of 4 or 4.5 stars. Keep in mind people are more likely to leave a review when something goes wrong than when it goes well.

I have this one: http://amzn.com/B000J179X6, which overall has great reviews on Amazon.

I've personally had mine for months, wearing it almost every day, been in rain lots of time, survived water rides at Disney World. Never swam with it, but no hint of moisture or anything.

I don't baby it and it's still in fantastic shape, not a scratch on it that I can see, no problems. Never left a review though. :)

Keeps as expected time for this movement, about 15 seconds fast per day.

Also, all watches on Amazon include a warranty, even if not from manufacturer. They have an Asurion warranty which I've heard is good, though I've never used it.

u/airblizzard · 3 pointsr/Watches

By entirely metal, were you referring to just the case, or the bracelet as well? The Tissot LeLocle has a semi-display back. Otherwise there's always the Hamilton Khaki. And since you mentioned open-heart, Bulova makes a few inexpensive examples.

u/kurazaybo · 3 pointsr/Watches

It would help to have more information, but try to avoid fashion brands like fossil, DKNY or Calvin Klein. It's not thay they are bad but they tend to be overpriced. Brands like Citizen, Tissot, Seiko, Hamilton, Oris, Bulova are a good place to start.

Curiosly the watches I see people like your father wear where I live are either G shocks or Diver watches, perhaps because I see them near tourist areas. From the top of my head the tissot le locle has a nice old school style.

Edit: forgot to mention that I would prefer a brand new watch with a proper warranty. You can get good classic, second hand watches with that budget but better not be surprised.

G-shock would be the way to go. I have and can heartily recommend this one. After purchase, the only thing you ever need to do to/with it is look at it.

And if it ever experiences trauma bad enough to kill it, you needn't bother worrying about it because you've likely not survived whatever it was.

u/bontebyuntae · 3 pointsr/malefashionadvice

It's funny a lot of the upvoted reviews on amazon are negative in that that watch is of poor quality and stops working after 6 months. I admit it looks great.

I like this watch and thinking of buying it as a dress watch

u/sathoro · 3 pointsr/Watches

I have always liked this Skagen. It is minimalistic like the Seiko you like, at a great price, and it is a great looking watch (imo). Here is a better picture that was posted on Reddit a while back.

edit: Now after looking at that picture again for a first time in a while I want one :(

I recently purchased a Skagen Men's 858XLSLC off Amazon. I thought it would be too big since my wrists are under 6", but I like it. Here's a picture of me wearing it.

u/Jack_Carver93 · 3 pointsr/Watches

do you mean SNN241? there is no SNN24, is it this one?

SNN241

if so, when you push the crown in after setting the time, do you see the small hand in the sub dial at 6:00 moving? on a chronograph the large second hand only moves when you engage the chrono using the pushers. the "running" seconds is usually done by the small hand on a sub dial.

next, if the small seconds hand does not turn, does the minute hand move with time? for example, if you set the time and leave the watch for say 15 mins, does the minute hand reflect that 15 mins has gone by?

many Seiko Mecha-quartz like the VK64 have no rinnig seconds, although I dont think this is a mecha-quartz movement.

let me know, and post some pics or video of what you are doing, that might help.

of course it could just be defective, but lets find out first.

u/benetgladwin · 3 pointsr/Watches

Hello! Off the top just a quick thank you to r/Watches for being so helpful and welcoming. I purchased my first watch in 2015, a Fossil chronograph, which served me well considering I knew nothing about watches when I bought it. Since then I have developed an interest, which this sub helped to kindle.

I received this watch, the Seiko SNN241 Chronograph, from my dad and step-mom as a belated graduation gift in August. Since then I have worn it almost daily. I quite like the date window, which my previous watch did not have. Another unique note is that the second hand is actually the bottom dial; the "main" second hand is used for the stopwatch function.

Have a great weekend folks!

> He has a charcoal tux and I'd like for him to be able to wear the watch on his wedding day and for formal nights on our cruise.

For this I would suggest a classic men's dress watch, which are generally smaller, thinner and more traditional or elegant looking.

A few suggestions;

Tissot Classic dress watch

Citizen Eco Drive dress chrono

Seiko dress watch

> He has mentioned NUMEROUS times that he wants a nicer, casual watch.

Casual, to me, usually means something less dressy, thicker, chunkier like dive watch or a big aviator/military style watch.

Some possibilities;

Seiko military auto

Seiko Monster automatic diver

Hamilton Khaki

Citizen Eco Drive chrono

General tips and suggestions;

  • If you like the watch, but, don't care for the strap, you can often replace it with the strap of your choice. If there's an choice, I usual go with the watch on the steel/bracelet and then order an after market leather or rubber strap.

  • Brands to check out in your price range; Citizen, Seiko, Tissot, Hamilton, ESQ, Orient.

  • Brands I would steer you away from; Fossil, Struhrling, Invicta, any designer/fashion brand; Kenneth Cole, Micheal Kors, etc

  • Quartz is cheaper, more reliable, & accurate than mechanical/automatic watches, but, many high-end, luxury watch are mechanical. Why? Mechanical watches are general viewed as more interesting mechanical works of art & craftsmanship.

  • if you are shopping online, I recommend; Amazon, Jomashop, BlueDial, AuthenticWatches.

    > what watch would you like to receive as a gift for that price point?

If I was really interested in getting a casual watch, but, also in need of a dress watch, I would probably want to shop for a casual watch myself and be gifted the dress watch.

u/MDUBK · 3 pointsr/Watches

Gotcha - I'd say a Tissot would make a great first watch with a lot of versatility.

Given that you want to minimize "hassle" around service, you might want to look at Seiko's and Citizen's solar quartz watches, which will never require a battery change at all.

A lot of these brands I really dont know. And in terms of timepieces you really do get what you pay for. For something that price range id suggest Tissot http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B005DL3R8S/ref=mp_s_a_1_4?qid=1417649296&sr=1-4&pi=AC_SX110_SY165_QL70

Movado, Mido, and Hamilton make great time prices, but that's way above budget...

Its a cheap Chinese quartz watch with a generic movement. You get what you pay for, so it might run for less than a month or it might run for a few years. It's almost certainly not waterproof and the sub dials don't do anything, and are probably painted on. You would probably be better off with something like this or this. This search will help you find more.

u/Aevum1 · 3 pointsr/Watches

Its plastic/resin,

you can use a fine grit abresive pad to remove the scratches, but in 99% of the cases you´re also going to remove the paint,

As for the crystal, a quick wipe with diamond paste can buff out any superficial scratch,

It looks like a beater, and retail price on that watch is currently 17 bucks + delivery.

I'm a big believer in bauhaus style for an elegant watch that looks classy as hell for work and also stylish for jeans + polo, etc. Just an incredibly versatile look.

Best bauhaus watch in your budget is the Junkers (unfortunate brand name -- it's German)

https://smile.amazon.com/JUNKERS-Watches-Junkers-Bauhaus-6060-5/dp/B0066GKTM6/ref=sr_1_1?s=apparel&ie=UTF8&qid=1487353123&sr=1-1&nodeID=6358539011

The Seiko SARB033 and SARB035 are also great watches under your budget. If you want something a bit flashier and dressier, the Seiko Cocktail Time / SARB065. As /u/patk35 said, the Alpinist (SARB017) is a good, versatile option -- a bit more casual than the Seikos I listed, but still workplace appropriate. The bright green may not be your style and doesn't always go with everything, however.

e: Just saw you have a preference for divers and want a more rugged watch. You can look at Bernhardt watches, their diver is very reasonably priced and their bracelets are well regarded. Similarly, you can look at Steinhart watches. Their divers are by and large Rolex homages, which you might regard positively or negatively. Classic look, but know what you're getting is a well-made watch with great value for the parts that some will regard as a Rolex knockoff rather than an homage.

u/Kramereng · 3 pointsr/Watches

Suit and tie, I suppose. I have a tux which I think my Hamilton Jazzmaster Skeleton looks great with or my Junkers (http://www.amazon.com/dp/B0066GKTM6/ref=pe_385040_127541860_TE_3p_dp_1).

But those are both a bit more flexible and can be worn casually as well. The B&M looks overdressed in most situations I'm in, which is another issue I have.

u/craayoons · 3 pointsr/Watches

So I really want this Junkers Bauhaus watch. The Quartz watch its about $250. The automatic however is about double the price. Just curious as to why that's so when according to the faq quartz is more accurate and durable? Not trying to sound like i'm trying to dismiss or understate mechanical watches. Just a legitimate question in trying to understand the two better.

Edit: found a better example with the black dial Quartz | Automatic

u/onandonandonandon · 3 pointsr/Watches

Got it about a month ago, I don't wear it all the time cause I forget, but when I do wear it, boy do I feel proud! I love the bauhaus style and I'm obsessing over which watch(es) to get next! This watch has just enough on it to not feel too bare, but it isn't cluttered like some other faces (which I have nothing against, there's a time and a place for every look). It is quite readable and I love that the hands glow in the dark. In my childhood the one thing I remember about my dad's watch was that it had glow in the dark hands (I know, very classy, but hey that's what my kid brain liked), so it's kind of the most important feature to me now as a bit of a nostalgia trip.

If you like the Junkers 6060-5 check out the 6070-5 or the 6046-5, from the same Bauhaus line. They just use a Ronda 515 quartz movement instead of the Citizen-based automatic in the 6060-5 and can be had for around $250.

I'm trying to decide on a Timex Weekender to be paired mainly with casual/denim clothing. The more versatile, the better. It appears the main things to decide on are 1. case size (40mm or 38mm), 2. face style (chronograph or standard), 3. face color, and 4. strap color. Below are a few of the options I've been looking at; I'm open to other ideas also.

40mm

u/Kroftyy · 3 pointsr/Watches

I've been wearing an old ugly watch to work out of fear because it tends to get banged around alot, and while my main watch isn't expensive, I still didn't like the idea of wearing it to work.

To fix this situation, I decided to pick up a cheap, yet somewhat nice watch, and the Timex Weekender Chrono really caught my eye. I really like the design of the face and the colour, and while I wasn't a fan of the strap that it came with, I was able to buy a two piece navy NATO that matched the watch face.

I'm really happy with this buy, especially after putting on the new strap today. The case still sits a little higher than I am use to, but getting rid of the one piece NATO strap really helps to lower it.

Any thoughts on this strap/face combination?

Hi yall,

I am new to this hobby and looking for a low-cost watch that is casual smart. I've read way too many reviews, but still cannot decide which one deserves my hard earn cash.

Current Options:

u/Uptons_BJs · 3 pointsr/Watches

I mean, ok, if we were to compare Orient and Seiko, I think Orient wins overall.

For instance, the Orient Ray II is $159:
https://www.amazon.com/Orient-Japanese-Automatic-Stainless-Diving/dp/B01AK5TQE0/ref=sr_1_1?s=apparel&ie=UTF8&qid=1510583470&sr=1-1&nodeID=7141123011&psd=1&keywords=orient+ray+II

The Direct Seiko Competition (SKX009) is $203:
https://www.amazon.com/Seiko-SKX009K2-Divers-Automatic-Stainless/dp/B000OP1M6M/ref=sr_1_1?s=apparel&ie=UTF8&qid=1510583493&sr=1-1&nodeID=7141123011&psd=1&keywords=seiko+skx

The Orient gets you a bit better bang for the buck with hacking and handwinding. Something that the Seiko doesn't give you. Now if we look at the look at Seiko's cheaper option, the SNZF15 at $139:

https://www.amazon.com/Seiko-Stainless-Steel-Automatic-SNZF15/dp/B001ELSSOO/ref=sr_1_16?s=apparel&ie=UTF8&qid=1510583493&sr=1-16&nodeID=7141123011&psd=1&keywords=seiko+skx

The Seiko SNZF15 doesn't hack or handwind, has only 100m water resistance, and although I haven't seen the two side by side, I'm willing to bet that Orient has slightly better quality materials/finishing than the Seiko 5.

Now the amusing thing about the Invicta is this, it uses Seiko's own movement that they use for $200-800 watches, yet they pack it in watches that come in under $100. Their quality and materials aren't even that bad, no worse than Seiko 5!

  2. Bulova This is more of a silver dial.

  3. Bulova Same watch as above, but in gold.

  4. Tissot Very nice minimalistic watch, other options with different numerals and indices available. Swiss made.

  5. Swatch Very cool mechanical watch, single screw holding everything together. Swiss made.

  6. Citizen Kind of a translucent white, solar powered.

  7. Tissot Very nice looking time piece. Swiss made.

No, a G-Shock is extremely informal, and it also won't fit well under a shirt cuff. If you'd like some good suggestions, go to /r/watches and give us a description of the environment in which you want to wear your watch, your personal style, and a budget.

In general, a dress watch should not be too large, should have an elegant, uncluttered face, and is typically paired with a leather strap (a Rolex submariner, for example, is a sports watch, though in an office you might get away with wearing some sport watches).

Somebody else mentioned Tissot, which is a reputable brand with good entry level quartz offerings. Orient also has some decent dressier models (Capital, Symphony, Bambino). If you need a watch that can be dressed up/down a bit more, then I'd recommend this Junkers. Seiko and Citizen Eco-Drive both have good offerings as well.

If you're willing to spend more, then your choices really open up. The Stowa Antea is a favorite of mine (though if you like this look, there is also a cheap alternative).

u/smartfinances · 2 pointsr/Watches

I have a Tissot White Dial Mens Watch and the buckle went bad. I never liked it anyway.

I would like to replace it with a high quality leather strap preferably in grey color. What does the community recommend? How do I make sure the strap is actually comaptible with it. I will then take it to my local watch shop to get it setup or maybe watch a Youtube video on how to replace it myself.

Sorry, the current watch is an analog style Citizen Eco-Drive. Here's a link to it on Amazon.

Over the years, I've had (& killed) a half dozen Casio's. Some were digital, some were analog ... none were G-Shocks.

If I were to buy a cheap Casio dive watch today, I'd probably check out this one or this one and of these two, I'd probably choose the latter, as it has a 200m rating instead of 100m and its been my impression that Casio's depth ratings have gotten less robust over the years.

Help finding a kind of specific looking watch?

First, I really want it to be automatic. There are a ton of Quartz movement options that are, I suppose something I might be interested in, if it weren't for the movement. I don't know if I appreciate automatic movement for the "right" reasons, but just something about having that constantly moving, intricate, piece of literal clockwork on my wrist, I appreciate. As a photographer, I would liken it to shooting film over digital.

Second, I adore the sort of, and I will use the term loosely, Bauhaus aesthetic as offered in something like the Junkers Bauhaus 6060-5, or the more pricey Junghans MAX BILL Chronoscrope

I do prefer the Junkers, and it is cheaper which is in my favor, but it's still a bit our of the range I want to spend.

Enter the infamous Ingersoll brand. I know, I have read the posts on here about their cheap movement and shoddy construction, but I haven't actually seen evidence of it. Perhaps I haven't looked as hard because I don't want it to be true, but all I seem to read is just an echo chamber of people saying, "It's cheap Chinese movement and it's no good."

Can someone explain to me why? This watch has caught my eye, and I really like the look for the price (with a different strap), but I am hung up on people claiming the brand is no good. I realize there has to be some sort of truth to the notion, but when searching for actual reviews, I come up short.

This leads me to my final question. Can anyone help me, or does one even exist, find a watch that meets this criteria? I'd like to spend $250 or so. It's not so much a matter of financial ability at the moment on getting the Junkers, I just want to know if the criticism of the Ingersoll watch is truly warranted.

My goal was to find a mechanical, but a combination of accuracy and functionality kept leading me back to this Edifice. Two shout-outs: first to /u/space-butler for helping me find a seller, and second to longislandwatch.com (/r/hailcorporate, I know) for allowing me to exchange my band for the right size (don’t trust Amazon for accurate band widths… this band is 20mm btw).

edit: watch model: EF-503D-7AV & band

Up for sale is my Casio Edifice EF-503D-7AVDF Chronograph. It's quite a good looking watch and made it's rounds on r/Watches as the poor man's Speedmaster. The case diameter is 42mm and sits comfortably and well on the wrist. This watch does need a new battery as the current one in it is drained. Selling to slowly add to my fund for my grail.

Included is the watch + all the original additional links for the bracelet. I believe I may also have the original box and packaging, so I'll update this space once I confirm that (just need to look in storage). The watch and bracelet is in excellent condition. I've only worn this about a half a dozen times.

Here are some additional photos of the watch: https://imgur.com/a/b1RJG3T

You can read all about the specs of the Edifice here: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B007V317E2/ref=cm_sw_r_tw_dp_U_x_OfJ-AbZKEV4WJ

Asking price is $110.00 USD (SOLD) shipped in the continental US. Not looking for any trades at the moment. I haven't bought or sold much on u/watchexchange but I'm happy to provide references on other forums or on my eBay account. Don't hesitate to PM me any questions you may have.

Sold That was quick.

Can't beat the value of the MDV-106 and SNK80X (probably one of the few automatics you'll find at this price range worth getting), if you want some variety i'd also add the: DW5600, Weekender, Weekender Chrono

u/stuff2s · 2 pointsr/Watches

I've been looking around some more and was leaning towards getting the Timex Weekender Chronograph. Nice that you have a weekender as well.

u/hobbykitjr · 2 pointsr/kickstarter

Someone just submitted this project 30 min before you... i think you're just selling an Ad here...

but how is this different or better than a Timex?

simple design for $30 or this one

or a nicer one for $45

u/JewWhore · 2 pointsr/Watches

I'd say buy 2 or 3 for $50 to $100 each. I bought 3 watches (for less than $100 total) before I finally figured out what I like wearing. My first watch was a chronograph on a steel bracelet. I learned very quickly what I do and don't like in chronographs (this one had many features I disliked), and I figured out that, like you, I dislike steel bracelets. I still have that one, but I don't wear it. After that I figured out that I like divers, so I ordered one of those. It turned out I didn't know enough about watches and bought something that didn't fit at all. I figured out where I went wrong, and bought a third watch. It is the one that /u/fragilestories recommended, the Casio mdv106. I wear this watch daily. I think it was nice to have a few and wear each for a while, and doing that let me get the perfect watch. Now that I know what I like, I know that when I spend $200 to $300 on my next watch it will be great. I am planning to upgrade to the Seiko SKX007, which will be my first mechanical watch. I guarantee that I will wear it every day once I have it.

Think about what you want to use your watch for. Will you look at it in class when writing the date on your papers? Get a date window. Want to time things? You need a chronograph. Figure out what features you will use and go from their. Or go for what you think looks the coolest, even if it has different features than you would use.

Also, look through this sub and think about what looks you like. Do you like numbers? Roman numerals? Symbols? What colors do you like? What straps do you like (these are pretty easy to change, but you will have to add straps into your budget if you want something other than what the watch comes with).

Here are 3 watches that will give you a good variety. These 3 will let you rotate watches, change your style, and figure out what features you like and don't like. The three together fit your price point (or are very close).

I love diver's watches, and would start with this: Casio mdv106:
https://smile.amazon.com/Casio-MDV106-1AV-Stainless-Steel-Watch/dp/B009KYJAJY/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1467354240&sr=8-1&keywords=casio+mdv106

I like some chronographs, especially the ones symmetrical across the right and left faces. The Timex weekender is great:
https://smile.amazon.com/Timex-Unisex-TW2P623009J-Weekender-Display/dp/B00QIJ62M2/ref=sr_1_3?s=apparel&ie=UTF8&qid=1467354305&sr=1-3&nodeID=7141123011&keywords=timex+weekender

Maybe you'll find you don't like any complications on your watch (I personally do not like date windows. I think watches look better without them. However, I do use it every day on my watch, so I have a begrudging appreciation for them). Here's another Timex without anything but an hour, minute, and second hand:
https://smile.amazon.com/Timex-Weekender-Fairfield-Quartz-Casual/dp/B0194L6AMC/ref=sr_1_7?s=apparel&ie=UTF8&qid=1467354305&sr=1-7&nodeID=7141123011&keywords=timex+weekender

Tl:dr You won't know what you like until you've worn a few different watches. A $150 budget is enough to buy several watches, so do that and pick a favorite.

u/madogvelkor · 2 pointsr/Watches

Looks good! I think you made the right choice -- I'm wearing a Weekender right now and the tick is audible. Though I'm good at tuning things like that out so I don't notice it.

Though I also have the Weekender Chronograph and the tick is much more quiet.

u/teaserer · 2 pointsr/Watches

Seiko is a good brand and those both look decent for quartz chronographs (although you should probably ask others, since I have no experience with either).

Based on your preferences, maybe check out Timex such as the Weekender Chronograph (which has a blue dial version). I also personally like the Expedition Chronograph and the military style would probably contrast well with a Bambino.

If you're not set on a chronograph check out Seiko 5s, specifically the SNK80x series; they have a few different dial colours and are nice entry-level beaters/casual pieces. I've personally had an SNK809 and it's great for the price (as is the Bambino).

Also, I should probably clarify what I mean when I say the Bambino is dressy. I just mean that it's probably too dressy for realllly casual occasions, it's fine for school, uni, work, etc.

Good luck! :)

u/shinbr · 2 pointsr/Watches
u/BeerNye · 2 pointsr/Watches

From that description, a Timex Weekender or Weekender Chrono wouldn't be a bad choice. I think amazon has a deal on them now too.

*Edit: the strap on these watches are easy to change. Depending on the model, you could get a nice leather strap for it and still come in well under budget.

u/wilarseny · 2 pointsr/Watchexchange

Just a general sense I've gotten here and on /r/watches, but basically they're like these watches but at a 1000% markup. Similar to the reasons keyboard enthusiasts aren't fans of razer/logitech/etc: bad value proposition relative to nicer (by enthusiast standards) things that can be bought for less

Not a whole lot of reputable companies really tend to make two-tone watches in that price range because that inherently involves the use of cheap materials (like "gold" plating) which do not hold up or very expensive materials (like actual gold). However, Citizen and Bulova are pretty well respected and do make some models similar to what you are looking for.

Bulova

Citizen

That Citizen will probably be bigger than what you're looking for.

If you are willing to go with an all-stainless and blue dial without the gold accents, you open yourself up to a wide range of quality options, many with automatic movements. Such as-

Orient

Seiko

Seiko

Orient

u/SPAS115 · 2 pointsr/frugalmalefashion

Hmmm, for me a daily watch is something that is versatile with most of my wardrobe and looks good. My two daily watches I spring for are the Bulova moonwatch and Orient Blue Ray, and hopefully the Seiko SARB035 soon. I would say dive watches, chronographs, field watches, etc. As for The Fifth watches, they won't garner much respect/attention from watch enthusiasts due to quality for the price, marketing strategies, and quartz movement, but if you like the look, buy it!

My recommendations for similar minimalistic watches would be anything from the Timex Fairfield line, Braun, Skagen, the Tisell bauhaus, Junkers, Junghans Max Bill, Nomos, Stowa, or dress watches in general from brands such as Citizen, Seiko, Tissot, Frederique Constant, and Hamilton, as they tend to have minimalistic dials.

u/Synketsu · 2 pointsr/Watches

Couple of choices. I would buy a cheap Seiko and save up for the Breitling
Quartz Flightmaster or a simple Seiko Navi

Seiko Flight Chronograph SNA411

Price: $200

Movement:Seiko Meca-Quartz

Style: Pilot Chronograph

Size: 42mm

Description: A great, affordable Seiko Chronograph. Reminiscent of Breitling, but different enough to have its own character. 200m water resistance and fantastic Seiko lume. Alarm function with dual-time sub dial. Seiko Meca-Quartz movement (chronograph seconds has a sweep-movement). Comes on a steel bracelet, but looks great on brown leather.

u/J-CAMPS · 2 pointsr/Watches
u/wshields · 2 pointsr/malefashionadvice

This is probably the wrong sub for this. Try /r/watches. It's also a really large topic.

You can spend as much or as little on watches as you want. /r/watches has some recommendations for all budgets.

Some examples:

  • Bulova budget dress watch
  • Very frugal Timex Weekender as a more casual watch
  • Citizen Eco-Drive as more of a sports watch

Sports watches tend to work well casually and in business causal environments and in part explains the popularity of grails such as a Rolex Submariner or cheaper versions like an Omega Seamaster or Speedmaster.

I'd highly advise you to do some research and figure out what exactly you want and how much you really want to spend here.

Personally I'd stay away from the Android wearables and similar but YMMV. On /r/watches you'll likely find many traditionalists who feel the same way. In some ways the desire to even have a watch partways makes you a traditionalist.
u/Neldonado · 2 pointsr/Watches
u/PShap · 2 pointsr/Watches

Well you aren't going to get an automatic chrono for $150-$200. You can get a manual mechanical chrono that looks similar for $500ish from Techne, but it has a display back without much room for engraving.

You could try this eco drive which won't require battery change, but it is a quartz movement (and also $40 over your limit), and doesn't have much room for engraving.

I just honestly don't think you're going to get everything you want, so it'd be helpful if you could identify which factors are most important.

u/joejoe2213 · 2 pointsr/Watches

Thank you haha. I'm rocking this Eco-Drive at the moment BL5250-02L. I'm a big fan of the perpetual calendar.

u/SteveEsquire · 2 pointsr/Watches

Sorry man, I looked all over and this is the only one I could find: link. No clue how safe that website is or anything so I definitely can't recommend buying from it. However, there is this Citizen on Amazon that looks similar: link. There are also various Seiko watches that have a similar look as well in the Amazon suggestions. Wish I could help more but unfortunately it really does look like it's sold out nearly everywhere. I'll keep on looking for similar watches though and let you know. Really hate to say it but you might have to settle with one that looks similar. But I'll keep searching :).

u/CarSnob · 2 pointsr/Watches

I mean, there's the Maratac Pilot/Mid Pilot, but that may be a little thick for your liking. That Rodina you have in the album is already within your price range too, look here. I'm not 100% sure that the Rodina is water resistant though. I personally like something like this Hamilton, and you can probably find one used that's within your price range.

As for your questions, the automatic shouldn't be too loud, but if you're really trying to hear it, you might. Some people actually like that. Now, it's not going to sound like you have a ratchet stuck to your wrist, but I'm saying that it could be noticeable. As for the second question, it really depends on how hard you fall, and where you fall. If you're falling off your bike all the time, you may want a quartz watch that will be able to handle more of a beating. If you don't plan on falling off your bike that often, or at speed, it shouldn't be that much of an issue. As for the vibrations, that's another variable. If you're riding across gravel and speedbumps, that might be a bigger problem than, say, a flat road or sidewalk. If your commute is really rigorous, you might just want to buy a quartz watch and not have to worry about anything except the battery. But I do feel that there is something to be said for the novelty of having a tiny little clock with gears and springs and levers and jewels ceaselessly beating away on your wrist. Just my two cents.

u/Minus-Celsius · 2 pointsr/Watches

If you're going to drop anything over $200 on a watch, I'd consider getting a mechanical watch.

They're not electronic at all, they rely solely on precision engineering, manufacturing, assembly, and quality control to function at all -- and they are accurate to within 0.01%.

To me, that is really cool, and I feel a lot of pride that people worked so hard on something so small. I also like the sweep seconds over the jump-pause of a quartz movement.

Cons: mechanical watches are more expensive to manufacture, have much lower accuracy (0.01% error for a quartz watch would be horrible, they're at 2-3 orders of magnitude better than that, for even crap quartz), and require you to wear them (automatic) or handwind them (manual wind) daily to function.

I would not necessarily recommend them, but Fossil has a wide selection you can see what looks you like. Their durability is pretty low and they charge a lot (even in a high margin industry, they charge a lot for how much watch you get), but they have most modern watch styles.

Hamilton Field Khaki Here with metal bracelet is a really flexible. It can be dressed up or down, and goes with other straps, like leather or nato. When you asked for versatile, that was the first watch I thought of.

u/stitime · 2 pointsr/Watches

Depends what you consider a decent watch... Some won't settle for anything but a watch with an in-house Swiss movement. If horology is important to you, wait and save up. But, if you don't care about this, I must say that the Hamilton Khaki/Pilot lineup is fantastic. The ETA movement is solid and will be relatively cheap to service. I used to have a Hamilton Khaki, until I drank a bit too much and it fell off my wrist because I had a cheapo band, and well I was drunk. I was/still am devastated.
This is what I had..

u/FirstLurker · 2 pointsr/Watches

Thanks for the comment. I don't know how I mixed those up, but here is the 38mm one. What would be considered a large watch in terms of size? I always thought 38mm was the "standard" watch size.

u/skepticaljesus · 2 pointsr/Watches

i think either are fine watches, and perfectly worthy gifts, but in my honest opinion neither strike me as "last forever family heirloom" material. The Citizen is not what I would call a timeless design and is likely to look dated at some point. The Shinola is a little more classic but... it's a cheap quartz movement in a well-designed but somewhat cheaply made case. And while there's absolutely no shame in wearing or enjoying either of these watches, neither seems like the kind of thing that will be treasured for generations either.

In the end, though, the best gifts are the ones given with thought and consideration for what the recipient might like. You love your husband, and I bet you know what he'd like. Follow your heart, engrave something thoughtful on it, and I'm sure he'll love it.

For my tastes, in this price range, if you want something stylish I'd look at a visodate, or if you want something a little plainer, try something military-inspired like this junkers or Hamilton field watch. For something a little dressier, also consider a SARB033. Also, I believe all of those watches are available in either black or white if that's a preference.

The designs of those watches are all much more classic and likely to age a bit more gracefully.

u/Loodba · 2 pointsr/Watches

And just so you know, my wrist is around 75mm. I like moderate-big watches (for example, I have the Casio MDV-106 which is 44mm and I like it, maybe I'd like a slightly smaller watch though).

Also, I like the curved glass of the Feice.

[Seiko Automatic Cocktail Time SARB065] (http://www.seiyajapan.com/products/s-sarb065) ~ $470

These are two of my personal favorites and next on my list of watches to buy.

Also check out Rodina or Parnis if you want something less expensive. Even though there seems to be a lot of debate over these "brands" of watches and whether people should buy or even consider them... some think they are fakes/replicas while others consider them more tribute watches due to the fact that they are decently made watches (sapphire crystal display and respectable Sea Gull movements) modeled after more expensive versions. I can't comment on Parnis but I ordered a Rodina which I am very excited for. $120 for a well-enough made watch that looks similar to one made by a respected brand (Tangente by Nomos) which goes for $3k+.

I wouldn't limit choices based on the strap it comes with...
Consider these as well:
Tissot Le Locle,
Tissot Visodate,
Hamilton Jazzmaster Viewmatic

u/suxer · 2 pointsr/Watches

Just a heads up, that exact model is a few bucks cheaper on amazon.

There is also a version that already has a black leather strap, but white case.

As for the seiko, there is also a cheaper option on Amazon.

Swapping bands is easy and inexpensive, you could look into Hadley Roma and Hirsch bands.

I agree with the other person who said Orient, as they make great quality watches in this price bracket. Alternatively, I might look at the Tissot Le Locle. Slightly out of your price range new, but you should be able to get a good deal used.

I've been waivering back and forth between 033 and 035 (Black or White). The only thing that keeps me from picking the 035 is that it looks cream colored, and the date window looks white. Do you not notice this in person? In the product pic on Amazon it's really noticeable. Let me know!

I love the leather band on it, usually I prefer bracelets, but this is awesome.

u/am_i_wrong_dude · 2 pointsr/Watches

OK so it sounds as though you want a black case as well as a black bracelet. That is usually referred to as PVD (for the type of coating that is used on the metal to make it black), and it is very uncommon in dressy watches. This is an Orient available on black leather that is nice and dressy. It has a stainless steel (non-PVD) case, which is generally considered to be a normal thing to pair with a black leather band. This is more of an all-black look if that is what you are going for. With a low-end budget, your best bets for a good quality watch are going to be Japanese: Citizen, Orient, and Seiko. My personal favorite is Orient (wear a blue Mako XL almost every day), but none of their offerings will get the internet epithet "fashion watch" applied to them.

u/nephros · 2 pointsr/Watches

Well I think an all-black watch can never look 'classy' but as you insist:

  • Citizen Stiletto
  • Orient Disk

are some all-black watches a bit dressier than those you linked to.

If you don't mind quartz maybe Skagen can do something for you, they are known for elegant, thin and okay quality watches.

Then, almost everything Luminox does is black, albeit not subtle: http://www.luminox.com/
u/kyleokeefe · 2 pointsr/Design

So, the watch company Citizen figured this out a while ago, and made THIS!

u/lessthanjake · 2 pointsr/TeenMFA

Also if you wanna further the streetwear sort of look, you could look into getting one of those little gold/stainless steel casio watches. It'd be a sleeker look since you have skinnier wrists/arms instead of the g shock or whatever you have on now

If you can afford it this is probably the best watch I've ever bought. Solar powered ( I've never had had the battery power fall below "high"), water-proof ( I've done lots of swimming with it on), and it adjusts itself every night to the satellite so you're never more than 1 second off from the exact time. Also it's a stopwatch and timer and all the jazz. Sorry to sound like a commercial but this watch is badass. They used to have it on sale for like 50$

u/maplespread · 2 pointsr/EDC

I would also recommend a solar atomic watch. Currently I have two. One G-Shock GW7900B1 for rugged use and one Citizen AT4007-54E for work/suit.

One slight problem with the GW7900B1 though. It was my first choice overall in the G-Shock series because it combines Shock resistance, Multi-Band 6 and Tough Solar features but after a couple of months only, rivets on the bezel started to fall. Big disapointment. I realised I'm not the only one and found this thread and this thread about the problem and how to order/replace the lost rivets.

My suggestion to you would be the GW2310 or the GW2310FB-1CR if you like reverse display.

It all depends on your budget too.

u/SteveMoop · 2 pointsr/OUTFITS

I'm not sure about the quality since I really haven't heard of the brand, but there is a similarly styled watch to the Skagen you linked from Breda for $45. You can get a similar Skagen with a silver face and black strap for $77 at Amazon. I found a couple of others that have a similar styling to that watch but are above your price range, a Stuhrling for $78 and a Bulova for $90.

u/goldsoundzz · 2 pointsr/malefashionadvice

Here's a few to get you started:

http://www.amazon.com/Mondaine-A660-30314-16SBB-Quartz-Classic-Leather/dp/B000ODISL6/ref=sr_1_16?s=watches&ie=UTF8&qid=1334849885&sr=1-16

http://www.amazon.com/Skagen-Denmark-Watch-Chrome-858XLSLC/dp/B003ZUMB5E

All of them are probably comparable quality to the UW ones posted. Personally, if I wanted to spend more than $150 on a watch in that style, I'd save up a little and try to get one of these. They are probably considered more "investment quality" with mechanical ETA movements and German assembly. Hope that helps.

Should I buy the Casio 5 and a aftermarket leather strap or go for the one above? I would probably guess a twenty dollar difference after everything. Is it worth it?

u/praetordave · 2 pointsr/Watches

I'm sort of in the same boat as you. I've been wearing a timex iron man since I was 12. I never take it off. When I was getting married earlier this year, I decided to buy myself something a little nicer. I settled on a Seiko SNN241. I know it's not a super expensive or nice watch, but for me this was stepping up. So I started wearing it daily, switching to my venerable iron man for the gym or camping. Well about a week after getting it, I brushed past a stainless steel table at the restaurant I work at and put a huge scratch in the crystal right over the 6. I was rather devastated.

So now it sits on my night stand, while my iron man is pressed back into service on my wrist. I still put the seiko on for when I'm going out and such, but that one scratch seriously killed wearing an 'expensive' watch daily for me. Sorry to be such a downer, the story seemed relevant.

I'm looking to pick up my first entry-level luxury piece ($3000-4000 ideally), and I'm leaning towards Speedmaster Pro. I also can't stop thinking about how awesome the Black Bay Bronze is, but I'm not sure its as versatile. Anyone have any other suggestions?

Not exactly small, but this seems to fit the bill, otherwise there's this you can get a strap for it with the money left over. I tried to find a diver's watch because it seems to be what you were looking for. I don't recommend invictica normally, I'm fairly weary of them but your budget is fairly tight but you can check this, out be cautious and do you homework when dealing with invictica. There's also this and that. You may also want to consider this.

EDIT: Added options

u/skriefal · 1 pointr/malefashionadvice

Invicta gets a lot of flack for their pricing strategy. But their 8926 is a good budget choice if you'd consider an automatic (mechanical) watch. Currently $85 from Amazon. There's also a quartz version.

u/sco0ts19 · 1 pointr/EDC

This ^

I’ll add the Casio Duro. It’s just slightly over your budget but highly regarded.

The Invicta Pro Diver has good reviews if you don’t mind a Rolex “homage”.

u/Slep · 1 pointr/malefashionadvice

Ok, ok, I know you said under $50, but if you stretch your budget just a little more you could get this Invicta Diver watch. It's an automatic which means it has mechanical internals that wind via a sort of pendulum that moves as you swing your arm when you walk. It's also a replica of a rolex design that Sean Connery wore in a Bond movie. 'Nuff said.

I think it's pretty stylish, and though a leather band would be more formal, I think it makes for a good all around watch.

u/Very_Respectfully · 1 pointr/frugalmalefashion

This price has been around for a while now on Amazon. I would just buy it there if you have the choice. They would probably have better shipping. Here . Not to be confused with the 8926, the larger model.

u/SRSLY_GUYS_SRSLY · 1 pointr/malefashionadvice

The invicta posted is pretty good looking, though the carbon fiber and extra dials are just a little busy for my taste.

I would avoid extra dials if possible. Look for something that mimics the simplicity of hugely versatile Rolex Submariner (crazy expensive but beautiful in it's simplicity).

This Invicta is a 3^rd of your budget, so the value is much more accurate. You can buy him some different colored NATO Straps to extend the versatility.

The thing with watches is that between $100-$500 there aren't a whole lot worth the asking price. I would recommend being frugal until you can afford to buy him a watch that will last a lifetime.

u/rrawlings1 · 1 pointr/diving

Invicta. Legit dive watch, sub $100, my friends that are watch guys have given me compliments on mine, and I always laugh because its so inexpensive.

u/regnak · 1 pointr/malefashionadvice

Any chance you'll start carrying 15mm bands? I just broke the band on my Invicta #8932 (... what do you expect for a cheap rolex knockoff) and need to replace it.

Edit: Do your bands also come with watch pins?

u/I_heart_snacks · 1 pointr/Watches

Tell us a little more about what you are looking for! From the watches you mentioned, it looks like you want a black watch. Are you looking for something sporty, classy, or just an all around daily? Are you looking for something simple, or something with a lot of complications on the face of the watch? Ill link a few for reference

Seiko 5 I would change the strap to something that appeals more to you if you don't like it. Great starter watch though.

Invicta Pro Diver Ive heard some debate on the quality of these watches, but for your purposes I think it would work well.

Casio G-Shock Solar Sporty solar G Shock similar to the one you linked.

Seiko Solar Another Seiko but this one is on a metal band and is solar powered.

Timex Weekender Another great starter watch that comes in a million color combinations. I got one for my brother as a gift off Amazon for $17 when they were having a sale.

I was thinking of getting this eco drive https://www.amazon.com/dp/B000EQS0WK/ref=cm_sw_r_sms_c_api_KqpaAb62MASJ4
This would be my first "real" watch and was wondering if anyone had any experience with this watch. Also why is it $140 cheaper on Amazon vs Citizen's website?

u/antifolkhero · 1 pointr/Watches

Is movement accuracy generally described by using the seconds per day gained or lost, as you wrote in your post? If not, how can I tell the quality of movement on any particular watch? For instance, I was looking at this Citizen Men's BL5250-02L Eco-Drive Perpetual Calendar Chronograph Watch, which lists the movement as Japanese quartz. It seems that Japan and Switzerland have the best quartz movements, but do you think it's worth it to a Swiss ETA? Also, how can I tell the +/- accuracy simply by looking at a description on a website?

u/ocdcdo · 1 pointr/Watches

This is very similar and I believe may be a better watch overall. It's a bit more expensive at $240, but you don't have to worry about changing out batteries if the other is Quartz:

http://www.amazon.com/Citizen-BL5250-02L-Eco-Drive-Perpetual-Chronograph/dp/B000EQS0WK/ref=sr_1_3?s=watches&ie=UTF8&qid=1339180173&sr=1-3

u/Mowjowey · 1 pointr/Watches

For a quartz chronograph, I personally like the Tissot PR100 and the Citizen Eco-Drive BL5250-02L.

As you may know, true automatic chronographs can be a little pricey ($500+) so it may be more difficult to find them based on your price point. Nevertheless, my favourite black-faced automatic watch (roughly) in your price point is definitely the Hamilton Khaki Field.

Hope you find what you're looking for!

u/RocketTech99 · 1 pointr/Watches

Hello all; thanks for doing this. I'm looking for a watch, around $500 which is durable and tasteful. I need a rotating bezel, perpetual calendar (if it has date complications) and luminous hands. I have a large wrist so large watches are preferred and not an issue. I prefer metal bracelets, so if it doesn't come with one, it would need to be able to take one (any recommendations for a bracelet would be appreciate as well).

I currently have this Citizen Eco-Drive 43 mm case watch and really like it. Quality, reliability, ability to take a knock, and looks are most important. Complications are always nice, but not required. Dual Time zone would be handy (L-TM on Citizen).

Thanks again, and Happy Thanksgiving.

u/ZestySushi · 1 pointr/Watches

I'm not a fan of the Hamilton's muted bezel, but I like the dial the best. Hamilton has two other versions of the Khaki that have better looking bezels, this and this.

As far as the other two goes, I like the SKX013 slightly better. I'm a fan of the dots as opposed to the typical lines you'd see in most watches.

u/skyflyer8 · 1 pointr/CasualConversation

Hmm... That i started with? I had a seiko pilot chronograph once that i considered keeping, but it was too large on my wrist. I've also had some retro seikos that i like. I currently have a vintage Hamilton Quartz that i'm not even sure if i want to sell. I probably will because i saving up for the Seiko SRP311 and the Hamilton Khaki Field Auto.

Through trades i have gotten a Citizen eco drive calibre 8651, which i've since sold, and a Hamilton GG-W-113 USAF pilot watch, which i'm planning on keeping forever, or atleast until i have someone to pass it on to.

u/myemailiscool · 1 pointr/Watches

u/drinkallthecoffee · 1 pointr/funny

lol. it's funny, now that i have a nice watch i can tell how nice someone else's watch is by the crystal alone. i'm not a snob (i like a good timex), but the only thing that looks nice from afar is a sapphire crystal.

u/IAmIndignant · 1 pointr/Watches

Hi everyone!

I'm looking for an automatic with a minimalist style under $250 (I'm a grown-ass man with bills to pay).

I like these a lot:

Hamilton [HML-H70455533 Khaki Field Black Dial Watch] (https://www.amazon.com/dp/B000J179X6/ref=cm_sw_r_em_apa_wai7xbEXF3DKW)

Obviously those are way outside my price point. Would love any suggestions! Must have the date displayed. I use that shit. Indifferent on the day. Glow in the dark hands would be nice to have.

u/StrangeRover · 1 pointr/malefashionadvice

Warning: opinionated rant follows:

A Hamilton Khaki Field Automatic may suit you well if you like simplicity. They can be had around $350 and in my personal opinion, along with the rest of the Khaki series, are the only watches worth buying between $150 and $3000.

That price range is just so chock full of watches with sub-par movements. Many are quartz, which is awesome for low end watches, but not worth much over $100. The only quartz watch I would ever pay over $100 for is a Bulova Accutron, but that's only because all the early NASA space capsules (and most of the earliest astronauts) carried Accutrons. Other than that, that price range is an endless ocean of Submariner and Speedmaster "homages" that come from brands with no heritage and they're boring, boring, boring. Sure, they may look okay and keep great time, but you can get those features for well under $100.

For the record, I wear a cheap Seiko 5 Automatic. I won't spend over $150 on a watch until I can afford a SS GMT Master.

Still think the Hamilton Khaki Field (38mm) is one of the best values for an everyday watch. I've done a bit of research and this watch seems to be well reviewed on all the watch forums I've visited.

Maybe you could use the remainder on a nice pair of boots? Both will last you a lifetime.

u/ryinzana · 1 pointr/Watches
u/Radico87 · 1 pointr/Watches

I'd do the le locle over this any day for several reasons: the old tissot logo looks tacky, the visodate sounds like an 80s television, and the dial looks dull.

u/ipki · 1 pointr/Watches

If I was in your situation these are the watches I would buy:

Diver: Steinhart Ocean 1 black (~$430) and then a decent rubber strap is around $50-70 more

Dress : Seiko sarb033/sarb035 (~$340) and then a leather strap $20-50. Also note this watch is very versatile and can also be used as a day to day watch.

That'll put you around $900 for 2 very nice watches.

u/Drink_More_Beer · 1 pointr/Watches

Tissot makes a few watches that are similar albeit more basicl.

The Luxury powermatic lacks the chronograph http://www.jomashop.com/tissot-watch-t0864071603100.html

They also make a quartz watch that looks similar
http://www.jomashop.com/tissot-watch-t008-417-44-261-00.html

A Swiss automatic watch with those features will exceed your budget, unless you get lucky and find a vintage watch.

This one? that looks a lot more faded cream than white to me.

To be frank, it looks like something my grandfather wore. Doesn't exactly have the clean aesthetic I was really going for.

The black however does look quite nice. But again, looks more like a dress watch than it does something closer to a bauhaus type design.

Thank you for the input. I do appreciate it. :)

u/Chrikelnel · 1 pointr/Watches

I know it's a bit over budget but I can't help but recommend the Seiko Sarb035. It's a legendary watch and seems like it would be a great fit.

u/Awkward_Typo · 1 pointr/Watches

If you're able to stretch the budget by $50-60, I highly recommend the Seiko SARB035. You should be able to pick up a good leather strap for less than $50.

u/___WE-ARE-GROOT___ · 1 pointr/Watches

If you like that type of style, then I'd recommend the Orient Bambino. I've heard a lot of good things about it, and it's very popular among watch lovers. Honestly I'd steer clear of brands you've never heard of like Burei. Generally when you want a cheap watch under 3-400, you're best going with Seiko, Citizen, and Orient as they're tried and tested brands with a good reputation. Another great option at $300 is the Seiko SARB035 or SARB033 (white or black dial respectively). The SARB line is very well respected at that price range, you'd have a hard time doing better than that IMO.

Edit: Google SARB035 on leather to see how nice it looks.

u/stillclickin · 1 pointr/Watches

Have you looked at the Seiko SARB035? You could easily swap out the bracelet for leather.

u/EYALRZ14 · 1 pointr/Watches

I've decided to purchase the Seiko SARB035. A few questions:

  1. I see it's available on Ebay for $309, compared to $340 on Amazon. Amazon provides a 2 year warranty; the Ebay seller said that they provide a 1 year non-manufacturer's warranty. Long Island Watch has it for $379, also with a 2 year warranty. Is the difference of 1 year the reason that the Ebay one is cheaper, or there some slight difference in the model I'm not seeing?

  2. Will this go cheaper than $340/$309, or it's just worth buying it now? Based on my research these prices are fine.

  3. With a quality black leather band, can this watch be worn for basically any formal situation? My research says yes, but looking for confirmation.

    Thanks.

u/mtd14 · 1 pointr/frugalmalefashion

Yeah that's a unique design, not going to be able to find similar let alone at that price point. There are minimal design blacked out watches around that price point (look into Citizen), but nothing with that hand style.

Also, are those hands hours on the outside and minutes on the inside? Seems opposite of what I want. Hour hand doesn't need to be accurate at all to tell what the hour is, but minute hand should be to tell the minute. Given a watch like this isn't designed for simple accuracy, but seems weird.

I wanted to find something similar to this Citizen but with hour markers; I'm not a huge fan of blank dials. This one is similar, but it is a little too expensive and I'd imagine the black hands make it hard to read. I've seen this Mondaine recommended a lot but I dont like how thick the hands are. The Seiko has the same minimalist look those do but with an easier to read face than the Citizens (I'm also partial to the date window).

I've been wearing this daily for about 3 years. Aside from the daily abuse I've given it, it's taken 2 weeks in the jungle, trips underwater to ~120 feet, and freezing temperatures. It's still holding up well.

Why would you buy a Timex for $150? I'd probably go for a Citizen, a Bulova, or a Skagen (which are 1000x better watches at 1/2 the cost) and then spend the remaining on a cool little wallet or one of these badass key fobs.

u/Foxy47 · 1 pointr/malefashionadvice

Not sure if this should be it's own thread but...

Black and white watches, I want one, but not sure which to buy.

4 Choices I've stumbled upon are:

  1. Timex T20501
  2. Stuhrling Ascot
  3. Skagen 858XLSLC
  4. Skagen 355LSLW

Which of these 4 would you pick? or are there any other good watches in a similar style I'm missing (preferably below £100/$150, student budget)?
u/wiredwithdrawal · 1 pointr/Watches

Check out Skagen watches. I got one for christmas and I really like it. Here's one that I think might fit your requirements.

u/BisuPrime · 1 pointr/frugalmalefashion
  1. Skagen

    Rossling & Co.

Alternatively, you could get a TimeX and buy a leather band.

  2. Brown shoes.
u/diversification · 1 pointr/frugalmalefashion

I'm gonna hope this question gets a lot of action and tag along with it, because I'd like to ask #1) what tool should I get to change my straps and #2) should I be buying extra spring-bars (where from and what type?)

This is the watch I bought straps for

u/OfficialApple · 1 pointr/malefashionadvice

I looked around but I couldn't one with a white dial color.
This is the closest I could find. http://www.amazon.com/Skagen-858XLSLC-Denmark-Super-Chrome/dp/B003ZUMB5E/ref=sr_1_12?ie=UTF8&qid=1375239150&sr=8-12&keywords=skagen

If anyone could find one with a white dial that would be awesome.

u/DynamicSilhouette · 1 pointr/Watches

Thanks! Not too big of a fan of the one you linked, but this (and this which looks extremely similar but way less expensive?) one of Skagen's that I found on Amazon isn't too bad. It's very similar to this one from Stuhrling.

u/ZackMorris78 · 1 pointr/frugalmalefashion

The only thing close with a similar look and 22 band size is this one. $67 dollars after the 20% coupon, which is about how much I ended up paying for the seiko 5, band, and spring bar kit.

Or you could go with this large easy reader for one on the cheap.

However if you have a little more to spend and you don't care for movement, this watch is probably one the best quality/nicest looking ones quartz watch is this one in my opinion. However once you're around the $100 range there are tons of options. /r/watches is a good resource.

u/Zualgo · 1 pointr/Watches

Ooh, that brown 7T92 is nice. Found a similar Seiko on Amazon.

u/ImScully · 1 pointr/malefashionadvice

You could find better for the price. After all, it is only quartz, which you can easily find around $60-70 for some reputable watches with a (to me) much more appealing face. The minimalistic approach looks sloppy on this watch. If you are a fan of chronographs, I recommend this.

u/Borealis116 · 1 pointr/Watches

Obvious dust on dial and other obvious cosmetic defects that could have and should have been caught by a decent QA process is a huge red flag to me. Bought an Orient Mako USA II and there was a huge red paint spill on the second hand and it made it out into the field just like that, as if no one raised their hands during the assembly and go "hey this second hand is pretty messed up". I got my refund but I would be lying if my respect for the brand hasn't been negatively affected since. Also cropped arabic numerals or indices to make room for sub dial is another pet peeve of mine; this eliminate alot of chronograph options for me. Example

u/jarec707 · 1 pointr/Watches

Good points. I'd love your further thoughts on a companion for the Bambino. I'm partial to beige and cream dials, like a calendar, and prefer simplicity but am open to a good looking not too flashy chronograph, like this 38 mm Seiko Seiko Men's SNDC31 Classic Stainless Steel Chronograph Watch with Brown Leather Band https://www.amazon.com/dp/B004JY0KP8/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_tai_WF44ybGASF23T. On the other hand (as it were) I really like blue and green dials and have been drawn to the green dial Bambino (like I need two dress watches, never dressing up), and also to blue dial solar Seiko and Citizens. All that said, I'm very open to other ideas and really appreciate your time, insight and encouraging way of communicating. i did some more lookingI looked some more and found this, the Orient Esteem. The styling is very nice, although i can't say it's the exact font i would choose. It's on the dressy side but i think the right band would make it work, and i tend to wear nicer clothing. But the simple styling is nice, the window is why i like it, a skeleton is too much, the peak just sucks you in (although the plate covering a good portion is annoying). I haven't been looking at mechanicals much but i know it would need to be worn every other day at least to keep it running, and isn't it necessary to be more careful with them (try to to hit my wrist on something hard for whatever reason)? This is way over what i originally said, but there's 30% off, so it's 120. I doubt i'll get it for that, but the price just changed to that and hopefully it will go back down as it was 130 until 4:30 yesterday according to camelcamelcamel, which discounts to 90.
Other than that the only thing i found was the Seiko snn241 which is a little higher than i wanted to pay, especially compared to the orient.

Hello everyone! I would like to get the community's recommendation for a classic steel case, white dial, brown leather strap dress watch and a diver's watch. My current collection of watches include - Seiko SNN241, Seiko SNA695, Seiko Kinetic SKA553, Casio G-Shock Rangeman GW-9400-1CR and a Timex Weekender Fairfield.
I am looking for a classic brown leather strap white dial dress watch. I looked around and finally deicded on this Orient Bambino Version 2, but it is not available anywhere! Out of stock at all retailers. What would you recommend in this style which can be an alternative to the Bambino V2 which is in the price range $200-$250? I am also looking for a Diver's watch in the $150 to $250 range. The choices in this category are quite a lot - Seiko SKX Collection, Seiko Monster SRP Collection, the Orient Ray, Ray II, Mako, Mako USA II. It's overwhelming. With the Diver's watch I would like your recommendation specific to quality and technology of the watch. This way I will be able to prioritize my choice based on quality first and then the aesthetics. Thank you!

My personal choice would be a Tissot Tradition. It's the non-perpetual calendar version of the one I gave my father for his 50th this past February.

Most people will probably scoff at the fact that it's quartz, but since your father has two other choices, he might find having to set this new watch every time he wants to wear it a bit of a pain with an automatic. I think it will go well in between the two he currently has, and is a good everyday style.

All the best to you and your father!

After watching this lovely piece of propaganda, I'm looking to pick up my first mechanical watch. I'm currently leaning toward an Orient Esteem. I like the Arabic numerals, open heart, and the blue hands on the white face.

Is there any reason I should avoid an Orient Esteem? If so, are there any similar looking mechanical options out there?

I was thinking, I could buy a Seiko Kinetic

They may not be as preferred here as many other brands since they're not automatics, but I think everyone respects Casio, and has probably owned one at some point. You'd be hard-pressed to find a watch company that packs as much value and as many features into a quartz watch as Casio does, and their Edifice line excels at doing that while looking attractive to boot.

To me, they represent the democratization of watches more so than any company, even Timex. Not everyone can afford a Rolex or Hamilton, but anyone with ten bucks to spare (Heck, you can pick up a dive watch for $16) can afford a good, reliable Casio.

u/djshiva · 1 pointr/EDC

I have this little thing that I bought for about $15 at the time just to have an analog watch that also had 24 hr time on it. I thought I would have it for a few months. I have now had it for a few years and it has outlasted several much more expensive watches.

I bought it when it was under $10 on amazon, because why the hell not at that price, so I'd recommend keeping an eye on it and snatching one up at least as a backup or just to mix things up a bit when the price goes back down around $10.

You can try a Quartz Mondaine. I believe they look nice and they are pretty cheap.

Another alternative would be to buy a Zeno Watch like this - this one is under 500$ and is automatic.

If you really like an automatic, you can also pick this Hamilton which is a little bit over your budget (~72$) but I believe worth every cent.

If you really like Bauhaus watches, but you don't have the money to spend on a Nomos or a Junghans, you can also take a look at those two brands: Zeppelin and Junkers (still I don't think those two are that sturdy). Examples:

u/cherlin · 1 pointr/Watches

Looking for something similar to the Junkers Bauhaus Ref - 6060-5 but with a sapphire glass, preferably under $1000, but flexible. Anything out there? I really love the face on that junkers, so hoping to be close to that. Amazon

Tissell Bauhaus straight up cheap Nomos rip-off that's hard to find but can be had for under $200

Junkers Bauhaus Automatic - different style but worth a look

Junkers Bauhaus Quartz - same watch but quartz at half the price

Junghans Max Bill - great watch in it's own right, but like the Stowa's, not exactly cheap - just a lot cheaper than Nomos

u/baldylox · 1 pointr/Watches

That MVMT at 45mm is a Frisbee. If you have thin wrists like me - it's WAY big.

Of course, most modern watches are huge. For some reason, fashion trends have gone towards men's watches the size of a football stadium over the last few years.

The Rossling @ 40mm is more like it. Still big, but I have a couple 40mm watches that look good even on my smaller wrists.

The Rodina is a nice-looking watch. Nomos 'homage'. I love a Nomos myself. They're affordable. I think they use a Seagull Chinese automatic movement. At 38mm, that's probably right in your sweet spot (I really like 35-38mm watches for myself).

I found a review of that one on Watchuseek:

http://forums.watchuseek.com/f71/affordable-nomos-homage-review-rodina-small-seconds-pictures-752788.html

May help.

Parnis is another brand similar to the Rodina that make the simple Nomos bauhaus-style watches. I imagine the quality of the two is comparable.

http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00K9PLLYA/ref=wl_it_dp_o_pC_nS_ttl?_encoding=UTF8

Junkers is another company to look at. I've never had one, but they seem to be popular around these parts. They start a bit higher than your budget, but not outrageously so.

http://www.amazon.com/JUNKERS-Watches-Junkers-Bauhaus-6070-5/dp/B006DDHQOQ

In your price range, it might be a good idea to stick with a quartz watch. It doesn't sound like a mechanical movement is a big selling point to you. Less expensive Chinese auto movements are going to be hit-and-miss, while a quality Swiss or Japanese quartz movement is going to be maintenence-free except for a battery change every few years.

Hope that helps! Good luck in your search. Stop back and show us what you decided on!

Movado Heritage 43mm, GMT, sapphire crystal, field (I own this and swap it in as my work daily regularly, also good for outdoor activities)

Seiko Kinetic GMT 43mm

u/daringescape · 1 pointr/Watches

I own this watch and LOVE it. It is solar powered, and quartz if that matters to you, but it is a fantastic watch. I wore it swimming and snorkeling in Hawaii for 2 weeks last year and it has survived multiple trips to the water park and lots of swimming as well as everyday use.

Not all of them, it seems. This one has a 24 hour dial, but reviews say that it's locked to the 12 hour hand and can't be used for a second time zone or as part of the chronograph. To me that's a damn shame because it's gorgeous, but I can't stand redundant features like that.

u/Zippy129 · 1 pointr/Watches

Tell me about it, holy shit. Just 2 months ago I remember staring at my Jacques Lemans chronograph that I received as a graduation gift and wondering if there was a large subreddit devoted to watches. Boy, was that a mistake. Pair that with my new internship that I started last week? Let's just say I'm still decently broke despite my shiny new job.

I started 2015 with a stunning Rotary auto, Seiko 5, Orient Esteem, and an Armani Exchange chronograph (a gift from my ex). My friends also bought me a watch box for my birthday so now I will be collecting even more vigorously.

I have decided to start saving money and budgeting, so I will be mainly focused on straps and working with what I have, but my next two purchases are already planned out: this Seiko will be purchased as my first dive watch, and then I will be saving up for a second hand Rolex Datejust 1603.

I got a Casio Edifice EF-503D-7AVDF a few months ago and have been quite happy with it. The original bracelet it came with was quite cheap, but I think the Panatime KVLR or more recently the Crown & Buckle Rallye straps I've been wearing it on make for a nice combo.

I don't know how much affordable you are looking for, but if you're in the sub $100 and you like the white face with black dial speedmastery look, this casio edifice is alright. Are any of these good? Does something better exist that is still within my price range? I'd love it to last and have a durable glass/crystal; scratches really annoy me :P

Thanks for your time!

Haha! I just bought a chrono Weekender, simply because I couldn't beat the price. Thanks for the suggestion!

u/ranxoren · 1 pointr/Watches

This TIMEX is pretty damn close to the Runwell Chrono.

I've compared them side by side and, save for the much nicer leather strap and the slightly better finishing, the Shinola is not worth almost $750 more.

The Waterbury that u/Finchios recommended is even closer.

u/BFNentwick · 1 pointr/Watches

That's totally fair. I use the chrono every day when I read and time audio ad scripts my company produces, so for me it was kind of a blessing in the end.

As said below, they do look cool as well.

This is the one I have

It won't be easy finding a chronograph that's under 40mm. You can search "seiko chronograph" on amazon for example and you will get plenty of results that look like the one you like but none of them are 37 or 38mm.

I found one that's 39mm but it's not all black like the one you posted: http://www.amazon.com/Seiko-SNA695-Alarm-Chronograph-Silver-Tone/dp/B001BMFBX2/ref=swr_wa_2_ses

You can also try one of these Weekender Chronos that are 40mm (I've got one):

Will this band work with this watch?

Sorry I'm a watch ultra-novice and I'm trying to cheaply get my first watch (I'm broke) with a band that I like and from what I can tell I think the band should work but I'm not sure.

u/InfiniteLiveZ · 1 pointr/Watches

Really not a fan of Hamilton. I'm not sure Why, they just don't seem to have that same elegance as most Swiss watches. Maybe it's the American influence.

The skx is a hugely iconic watch that is about as versatile as you Can get. Obviously it isn't a "luxury" brand though, which may have some influence on your decision.

A few more you might want to look at are:

Orient blue Ray 2 (which I own and absolutely love, it's my daily beater and is perfect for me. Can't fault it.)

Christopher Ward's Trident (I have this one as well but it's still sitting in the box a month later so I can't really give you my opinion on it)

Longines hydroconquest(doesn't have a ceramic bezel when most other watches at that price point do)

Tissot seasomething powermatic 1000.

Glycine Combat Sub.

Squale 1545

I'd personally go Orient. They have an in-house automatic movement and some really beautiful watches. In my opinion they're the absolute nicest watches you can get for usually under $200. Everyone says they feel like they're worth twice that much. I am constantly getting complements on mine.

Here's the one I wear.

and here's just a general amazon search. Theres some nice black ones as well. https://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_noss_1?url=search-alias%3Daps&field-keywords=orient+watch

Really, what type of watch do you want?

u/lulu_l · 1 pointr/Seiko

I'd look on watchrecon.com (or the app) for a blue Orient ray 2. You might fiind one bellow $100. Or you could stretch a bit and buy one new for about $130.. It's very versatile. You can wear it with a sui or casualy or even sporty.. It's a much better watch than any seiko 5 but if you must have a seiko than my pick would be the snkl41 or the black snkl43. It's elegant enough am can be dressed up or down easily. I also like its case with both brushed and polished surfaces..

Edit: there is also the snk381 that has numerals..
There are also some orients from the tristar line (with blue dials and bracelets)

Hi, I'm looking for a good first everyday watch that would be fine in situations such as interviews. My budget is about 200$ (can extend by a bit) and it'd be great if some suggestions are below budget. Some features I'd like:

  • Reasonably waterproof
  • Date(if possible)
  • Will last long for ~5 years

I've gone through the guide and I have two main ideas: Get the Orient Ray II (Blue) or get the Casio MDV106.

    Thanks in advance!

Okay, a heart monitor means a smart watch, which isn’t really the thrust of this subreddit, but you might get some suggestions. Not from me though :-)

If you want something more watchy, I suspect a dress watch will be too delicate for you, as you’re young and want to dress it down too. So you want something more versatile. A diver might be good as it’ll dress up or dress down, looks good with a suit, in jeans, or on the beach.

The Orient Ray II is an attractive, well made diver with a good movement that might work for you.

If you do want something more traditionally dressy, Orient Bambinos are great, but they’re not tough. Check out the buying guide for more $0-250 suggestions.:-

It does look a little flashy. if you want something similar, but more simple I would recommend this:

http://www.amazon.com/Orient-FDB08005W-Esteem-Stainless-Leather/dp/B005HZU7LU/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1452479228&sr=8-2&keywords=orient+esteem

cheaper too.

u/dubbin64 · 0 pointsr/minimalism

Most "minimal" quartz watches have <10 USD movements in them so what you are paying for is fashion. These are the MVMT, Daniel Wellington, Nixon, Fossil, ect. You can buy them if you like the way they look, there is nothing wrong with that, but know they are built fairly cheaply and marked up to +$100 for no reason other than fashion. You can checkout DHGate and buy a fake DW watch for $7-12 from China that will be identical in quality to the actual DW watch, and could potentially even come from the same supplier! (not recommending, just commenting)

It really depends on what styles you like and how much you want to spend.

Watches I would recommend that are in my opinion minimal:

Casio Men's A158WA-1DF.
Its not super aesthetically minimal, but its ultra cheap, I think it is relatively stylish, impeccably reliable, easy to read, good features (light, alarm, stopwatch, long battery life). This watch got me through a year aboard a Nuclear Submarine and served me well as an alarm clock, stop watch, and time keeper. It dresses up and down very easily, and I wore it to dinner in foreign ports as well as in the engine room taking logs on equipment. I still have it in my rotation. At 33mm thick, with an 18mm band that tapers, this watch has a very low profile, minimal wrist presence. For 12 bucks you cant not want one.

Junkers Bauhaus
Much more expensive, especially for an entry level piece, but very well made. Mechanical, Japanese movement, built in Germany, certain to impress watch enthusiasts and normies alike. Its automatic, meaning it does not have a battery, and a mechanism winds the watch up due to the movement of your wrist throughout the day. This also means that if you dont wear it for a few days it can stop running, but all you need to do is give it a shake and set it again to get it going. There are some quarts models by Junkers that are cheaper, also even some models with Automatic Swiss movements, worth taking a look. Some cool features this watch has are the power meter, so know by how much the movement is wound as well as ability to perform as a 24hr watch for military time. Easily made a dress watch but good as an everyday casual watch as well. 41mm case, so it will wear very modern (ie large).

Sieko 5
This watch is not as minimal in the aesthetic sense, ie the face has more than just tick marks at each hour, and it has both day and date functions. It is another automatic, and I will argue that it is still pretty minimal. At ~50-60USD is is a perfect entry level choice for a first automatic/mechanical watch, and comes in several colors. Well made for the price. At 37mm it wears much smaller than most popular fashion watches (one of the reasons I recommend it as a minimal watch). It will suit you in both casual and fomal settings, and will appeal to both watch nerds and every day people. Not gaudy or pretentious like a Swiss made, gold piece, but it has some character and soul. I would recommend if you buy this watch to also pick up a band, as the one supplied from Sieko is uncomfortable and unattractive in my opinion. The watch will do well on a Nato band, or a light tan leather band (check out the amazon reviews user photos)

Casio Men's MQ24-7E
Another Casio, not as versatile since it is very casual, but undeniably minimal. Very similar to the watch worn by the Pope. If you want ultra cheap, reliable, and analog this is a good choice.

There are many, many other good choices out there. Good Luck, and I hope this helped!

u/wkfink · 0 pointsr/Watches

Both are using Bauhaus design. Braun has been using Bauhaus design since Bauhaus was starting as an actual school, from what I can tell. Not so much as watchmakers, but as everything makers.

Both are copies of a much nicer (and far more expensive) watch: the Junghans Max Bill.

If that's your thing, I'd strongly consider the Junkers version of the Max Bill. It's quartz like the Braun and the Skagen, but to my eye it looks a bit better and more minimal (which is what Bauhaus is about).

u/manilamoneyy · 0 pointsr/malefashionadvice

Invicta for 50 bucks. my buddy bought one, it had a clear caseback. I found the bracelet to be flimsy though. Can't complain for $50 imo.

u/gunnerbosela · 0 pointsr/Watches

I recommend this watch. http://www.amazon.com/Invicta-Diver-Collection-Stainless-Bracelet/dp/B0006AAS7E/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1382229112&sr=8-2&keywords=invicta+pro+diver. I own the $80 mechanical movement version and I like it. It looks nice and takes quite a beating. Its survived construction and other dirty/tough jobs. Also its smaller size looks good on skinny wrists like mine.

Well, here's a busy Citizen.

u/HSoup · 0 pointsr/Watches

I was just looking at Citizen's at Amazon and some are almost 50% off (though I do have prime, I don't know if that's a factor).

For example, I'm looking at this one.

u/Toys_and_Bacon · 0 pointsr/Watches

Maintenance.. That excludes vintage watches sadly. $500, that's in range for a Movado Museum, isn't it? I'm not sure. Too special? Check out Tissot then, they make some good looking watches. This one is automatic, which I guess is cool.

u/espnman321 · 0 pointsr/malefashionadvice

I use my phone to tell time... but that's usually because my watch is too damned difficult to read. It's an accessory, not a tool for me.

Citizen AR3015-53E

u/theorymeltfool · -1 pointsr/coolguides

Yeah, so what? I drive a Porsche now because I can afford it 😁😁. I got a raise from my job and I still save/invest an average of $9k/month (so far this year anyways).

What about you? How much do you save/invest every month??

Edit: Oof, never mind. Yeesh...

u/long218 · -1 pointsr/Watches

SKX and OBR are robust and sporty. Don't wear them with oxford unless you want to make a contrast. I only ever wear my Orient Black Raven when I wear t-shirt or when it is raining.

Smaller, less robust watches pairing with leather straps will give you a nice formal look. I have the Timex Easy Reader and Casio Edifice

u/MyNaemIsAww · -2 pointsr/Watches

Invicta Prodiver 8926 or Parnis Power Reserve any day over a shitty SNK809.

But my 1st choice, and this would be for a lovely lady with a personality, would be a Casio gold-coloured digital watch. I once met a well-dressed, attractive girl and thought her boring until I noticed this on her wrist. Haven't forgotten her since.
