Thank you /u/sundaequeen for your tip post! My tracing skills aren't thaaat great, but it was so much fun to do and turned out pretty good.

I used canva to draft the addresses and used Playlist Script and Charlevoix Thin fonts. I bought this inexpensive lightbox and it worked perfectly.

I am also a fineliner/marker user! Disclaimer: I don't think I'm going to answer your question, but provide my experience.

I upgraded from microns to copic multiliners recently because my markers were frequently smudging my linework and I found the ink flow to vary from pen to pen and session to session.

Also, started out using some cheap Faber Castell markers and upgraded to Copics, and the difference is night and day (second disclaimer: these are both from over a year ago). See how the marker ink on the copics more evenly bleeds through the paper, instead of the clumps in the first picture?

I guess this is my longwinded way of saying, some tools are crazy expensive for a reason. You don't have to go insane and buy the huge sets outright. Just a pen here and there. I started out with a copic greyscale set which comes with one of their fancy pens just to try it out and I haven't looked back.

Sorry if this wasn't the answer you were looking for ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

u/ZombieButch · 6 pointsr/learnart

So I started painting with actual paint again last month, for the first time since the '90's (yes, I know, I'm old as fuck). I'm starting with gouache and going more or less through the progression Jeff Watts uses in his gouache atelier class: grayscale for awhile first, then the Zorn palette (that's black, white, red, and yellow ochre), then finally a warm/cool palette. (I'll probably detour post-Zorn into some slightly larger limited palettes before I bust out a full warm/cool one.)

So the pictures in the link are in reverse order. The top one is a drawing I just finished this evening that I'll start painting over tomorrow. I drew it scaled up from the photo with the help of one of these.

After that are just some examples of paintings, again, from newest to oldest. They're all generally pretty small; Johnny Cash is on a 6x8 board, the others are on about 4.5 x 7 or so. The new piece, the Greek bust, is on watercolor paper, the rest are on bristol board.

The last picture is where I tack them all up when I finish them, right over where I work. The top row of the board is the Wall of Shame, where I put my fuck-ups.

Everything on the board is also in chronological order. So, the first couple of days, I was just figuring out how to mix the paint to the right consistency, getting used to the tools, that sort of thing, not really worried at all about making good paintings, just throwing it down and getting reacquainted.

After that I did a couple of studies of old illustrations (a pulp cover and a 60's magazine illustration) before moving on to photo studies. After I finish the Greek bust, I'll do a few still lifes.

Once the cork board is all filled up, I'll clear it off and start on the Zorn palette!

This roll from [amazon] (https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B000P6YNHK/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o09_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1). Works well for what i need it for, really only acting as storage at home. Cheap and easy.

I used Touchnew markers.
Numbers; 64,76,182,CG8,83,143,84,132,145,75, white deleter for the eyes, I overlapped # 76 on 182. # 64 is used to shade for the blue. # 145 is for the shade for the white on the dress. CG8 is for the dress and shoes. #84 is the ribbon. # 83 is for the shade for the dress. For the black I used whatever but make the lines thick haha rem is thick lulz. I used a color pencil for the blush. For the skin I used #132. TBH I would go fairer. Like #26 or #131. I used a micron pen for some of the black I have a black Copic marker so I used that to fill in some stuff I would not use the Copic cuz the brush is hard to control for me now. I would recommend drawing her before you even start to color her. Here is the sauce for the markers I used. And the rest of the art supplies I used. I would not suggest the paper I used.

Oh yeah, put too much time into it to just erase. Made an 11" x 17" stencil that I printed, cut out, and taped to the lectern. Traced that with some chalk I bought a few years ago; outlined in white, removed the stencils and then filled in with red, then orange, then yellow. I'm really happy with how it came out.

Deciding if I want to put anything at the bottom.

I got a full set of Akashiya Sai watercolor pens for Christmas, actually. They're nice, deep colors, and have no odor.

I've only gotten ever gotten black Microns, though. I've got all 30 of the fineliners, so I don't have a lot of interest in anything but maybe the blue or blue-black for work (and I have G2's and Precise V7's for that).

u/ARehmat · 3 pointsr/mechanicalpencils

Derwent Art Roll, have used it myself for 5+ years, no signs of fraying. Excellent!

Here it is!!

u/howboutme · 3 pointsr/learnart

Something like this (link) is good. Steer clear of bags. This style (link) is borderline passable but I wouldn't put any loose pencils in the bag side. Just be careful not to drop or jostle them too much as it will most likely break the leads in the wood.

u/Poobyrd · 3 pointsr/learnart

Some of this might just be common sense, but it might be helpful. Ask yourself quantitative questions about sizes, lengths and angles. Is x wider than y. Is the angle I drew bigger or smaller than the reference. Is this shape fatter or skinnier. The whole time you're drawing, make comparisons. Compare your drawing to the reference and compare the aspect you are drawing to other parts of the drawing.

Pick one length and treat it as your base unit. This is the one unit you will treat as a benchmark. You can compare some lengths to any other length in the drawing, but be sure to choose the me back to this basic unit to check your work.

You can use your pencil as a guide for comparing lengths. When drawing from life hold it up at arms length and perpendicular to your eye (keep the distance constant so it isn't skewed by perspective) and grip it so that the distance between the point and your fingers matches what you see. Then you can use this to compare other lengths that you are observing. You can do the same with a reference by laying it down on the photo.

A good tool for this is a proportional divider. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B005QSBA2S/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_EtZWCbWTPDG6F

You can adjust where the pivot point is to scale up or down your drawing from what you are seeing. As long as you keep the pin in the same place, you will get consistent measurements of proportions. And you can use the v shape to measure angles. You can us it for photo reference by touching the points to the page like a compass. Or you can use it for life drawing (just make sure you keep it the same distance away, using it with your arm fully stretched out

Practicing with one will help build your intuition for angle and proportions if you use it smartly. Make your best guess, and then use the proportional divider to check your work. Over time, you'll improve if you do it this way.

The charcoal contrast looks great. I found this video which is very relevant to your drawing. It's a mixed graphite/charcoal drawing of the beautiful Audrey Hepburn. She has jet black hair like Alita in the reference photo.

Yes, use graphite first and then charcoal last. You can prevent smudging by using a piece of paper to rest your drawing hand. When you're finished with your art, you can spray it with a fixative like this which has a matte finish.

Here's a secret weapon to use for values: a value chart. Our eyes deceive us. When dark values are next to semi-dark values, the semi-dark value can appear much lighter than it is. Print out the chart and place it on the reference picture and all areas where the value changes on Alita's face. You'll get a sense of how dark or light the values are in the reference. Then use that value chart on different areas of your drawing and you'll know where you need to darken or lighten.

Here's another secret weapon: the proportional divider. You don't need to use grid lines. Actually you can use none or only a few lines. Some people claim it's cheating, but that's nonsense. You still have to draw the picture and it will improve your sense of proportion. Here's the dirty secret: many portrait artists will use it to check their drawing. They will draw it freehand, but will check the proportions with the divider or compass or pencil. Here's the quick video and here's the longer video by an art teacher.

I don't see many comments on actual technique, but I believe sharing ideas is very important.

u/beezyshambles · 2 pointsr/drawing

I use these ones I got from from Amazon I dont think they're the best on the market by any means, but they do the trick :)

u/these-points-of-data · 2 pointsr/BrushCalligraphy

Kuretake makes a similar set to Tombow, with one soft tip and one hard tip. Pentel also has their Fude Touch Sign Pens in a smaller and larger size compared to the colored pack, where the smaller sized pen tip is comparable to the Fudenosuke hard tip.

Unsolicited review since I've tried all three: Idk if this is just me, but that Fude hard tip pen spits out ink like no other. I think it's less of a problem if you're pressing down on the tip all the way for your down strokes, but I like using the hard tip for a thinner effect all over. I only use about 50% pressure on downstrokes, but even if I graze the pen on the paper for upstrokes, I get a bigger glob of ink than I would like. The Kuretakes seem to do this too, but the Pentel is better at releasing ink at a more moderate rate. The downside of the Pentels is that the tip doesn't seem as hardy as the Fudes.

u/MrFantastic21 · 2 pointsr/Surface

I use these: Felt Nibs

and these: Flex Nibs w/ Rubber tip

The standard Hard Nibs from Wacom will also work. Just don't buy the ones for the Bamboo Feel.

u/Beart8o · 2 pointsr/ArtCrit

Glad to be of help!

I appreciate the embracing of mistakes and not laying everything out beforehand. I would encourage finding something similar but that is capable of creating blacker blacks than a ballpoint. Something like more traditional pen and india ink or some nice art markers, I have this set of Copic markers that I really like.

I go through pens like coffee. I've been learning Japanese for over a year and a half now and I write all day long, so it's the norm for me to run pens dry. The Sarasa I love because even when they're low they still flow smoothly. The G2 in my experiences does not once it is past the half-way mark. That said the G2 tends to last longer, but it more frustrating for me past half way. (I did find a youtube video on how to push down the gel, but... I don't want to work on a pen that will be dead by the end of the week guaranteed.) I also love to use Bimoji brush pens, especially when learning new kanji. Which I'm excited to get a new one soon so I can use it on the fancy 32lb paper I have now. I'm really nerdy like this. =)

u/Khasimir · 2 pointsr/intj

I use fountain pens but probably pretty crappy ones. They always seem to dry up really fast. I did just buy this though and it should be here tomorrow.
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01MQCVNAW/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Again, no idea what I'm doing so if you might know, let me know if this is a piece of crap.

u/zedmartinez · 2 pointsr/analog

I use a Testrite CS-4 copy stand bought used on eBay clamped to a desk, a cheap tracing tablet from Amazon, 4 2" steel spacers from a hardware store, a pane of glass (from a picture frame) on the spacers set off from the light source, and to hold the film flat I used a jewelry saw to cut a couple brass blanks into sort of neg carriers, back with craft foam. And then a macro lens (get a native one if budget allows, but it doesn't need any crazy specs. A longer focal length gives you more room under the lens for adjusting the neg). And finally Negative Lab Pro, because you will go crazy trying to manually color-balance the RGB curves if you're shooting color stocks.

Thank you! I just purchased some watercolour pens and I'm still getting used to them, but they're a dream. They're made by a company called Akashiya SAI. Here's a link: https://www.amazon.com/Akashiya-Sai-Watercolor-Brush-Pen/dp/B000VZB51C

I also have a set of Winsor & Newton watercolour pens, but I honestly like the SAI ones better. (That and they're cheaper.)

Akashiya Sai Watercolor Brush Pens
I like them over Tombows because I find Tombows harder to control and easy to fray (even with rhodia paper). I really enjoy using brush pens like these with softer bristles :P

  • The Pathfinder Combat Pad is a must have tool, imo.
  • If you get the chessex mat, then use Crayola Ultra-Clean Washable Markers and you'll never have to worry about your mat being stained.

Other things I've done, there are lots of free "rpg background sound" websites you can visit. Some of them even have built-in mixers where you can up certain sounds or not. For instance, there was one I visited that had a tavern playing greensleeves. Other than the lute, it matched exactly what I'd expect in a common room so I just turned the lute off and just had the noise of the people, random chair shuffles, random dish clinks, a quiet crackling fire. While this was going on I just had a picture of a common room up on the TV. Likewise I did this for forest sounds and a cavern.

An awesome thing I saw one GM do was take double-cardboard (as in extra thick cardboard, could be replicad by two pieces of "regular" cardboard glued together) and he cut lines for the grid, and spray painted it with "sand" paint. It made an awesome sandstone dungeon scene. And since it was all cardboard he could cut the rooms separate and just laid them out on the table when we encountered each room. When we were approaching the dungeon he had random lego pieces for when we were at an oasis (so rocks and trees sorta thing--not the actual bricks, but pieces that were actual lego rocks and palm trees.).

    Obviously having miniatures, helps.

Other things that look awesome are the 3d dungeon tiles that you see many places, but the ones with walls are actually really hard to play with, so I'd stay away from those (which is most of the 3d pieces).

Probably not a bad idea actually.

I've just bought a metal mesh stand for the iPad that holds it up at a good angle and keeps the back open for ventilation. I'll report back once it arrives and I can try it out. Got to be better than resting it on a cushion where it gets all hot.

I got a couple of 'pen' wraps ( these ). Being that they're pencil wraps, chunky pens are a little bit of a squeeze, but nothing too difficult. The only ones that really take an persuasion are the Jin Hao X450 and my Faber Castell Basic (never realised it was quite as thick as it is!). I keep them mostly double spaced in there as I don't want them to rub, but it's given me no issues as a cheap fix to the issue.

Just to give another option besides the Tombows, I use a combination of the Huhuhue Double Ended and the Huhuhue Fine Tips.

With a decent notebook (ie. not a composition book) I get minimal bleeding and the pens are super affordable.

I don't know if you have a case for pens, but I recently bought this one and I'm super happy with it.

Mungyo Pastels:

They can be found relatively cheap on Amazon, start chipping away with a hobby knife and convert it into dust-like powder and apply with an old brush.
