I have one of those. They used to sell them at record stores to hold CD's. Amazon has a similar one. I don't have a single CD but I still kept the plushie for the nostalgia.
I recently threw out all of my DVD cases and put all of my DVDs into a a big CD binder similar to this and I haven't been missing the cases at all. If you don't mind parting with the cases, it's one way to free up a lot of space without having to build anything.

You might want to consider just buying a few high volume CD/DVD binders. Maybe a couple of these. Even with the best software, DVDs rip/encode frame by frame. If each DVD is around 2 hours long, you're looking at 600 hours of ripping DVDs. If you spend all day, every day, just ripping DVD after DVD, it'll still take you almost two months. Of course you can walk away while a DVD is ripping, but DVD encoding will also most likely use well over 75% of your CPU cycles and in some cases, close to 100%. Which pretty much means you can't play video games, watch other movies, etc while they're ripping. Just doesn't seem worth it to me.
For reference, discarding took about 4.5 months in my 1400 sq foot home and two storage sheds. I have started working on deep cleaning, upgrading necessary yet ugly items, and storage/organizing. I expect this to take another two months. I am watching "Clean My Space" and "Home Organizing by Alejandra.tv" channels on YouTube now to help with the process.
I am trying to keep in mind getting products out of original packaging, if possible, to limit exposure to constant advertising in my home. I am choosing to spend quite a bit on higher quality products that I love and expect to last many years. Fortunately, I have a budget that allows for some luxuries.
Bedroom

The closet has a built in shoe organizer and I used my label maker to indicate what style shoes go on which shelf – heels, sandals, sneakers, flats and boots. The folding works great for most of my other clothes. I am still pondering how to organize the nightstand drawers.

I bought a couple of 10" bamboo lazy susans for keeping my oils and vinegars organized in my cabinets. I bought some refrigerator organization units from InterDesign and the Rubbermaid FreshWorks Produce savers. I intend to get Oxo food storage containers for dry goods.

I reassessed what is in my purse. I used a couple small cosmetics bags that I had on hand and now have many things I wished I had at various times. Everything is neatly organized and I know exactly what is in there and why I have it. If you made it this far, congrats. Something that I have noticed is that I can now shop with confidence, I can easily toss or donate the old unloved items, and I am organized enough to return those few items that don’t work as well as I hoped. My home feels much more open and inviting. I know where everything is and my clear vision is starting to come to fruition.

Physical media isn't much of an "investment", because it's generally so cheap and easy to buy new. Since your collection sounds a bit niche/obscure, it might have some items that are less common and more sought after/valuable, but that also means there's a smaller audience for it. Might be better off selling them online if you're concerned about how much you'll get for them, even though that's not the quick and easy way.
I have a few suggestions.
Make the stuff the responsibility of the person who wants it. Their job to deal with them, and they must store them in their own space. This might change their minds about how important the stuff is, but even if it doesn't, the stuff is dealt with.
Sound and video discs can take up a fraction of the space if you take them out of their plastic cases and store them in a binder like this. I took my CD music library from a wall shelf down into two of those binders. It was amazing.
Digitizing the music/video takes the least space of all, and 1 TB external hard drives are now about $60. The major "expense" is time in ripping the files. Again that should also be the responsibility of the person who wants to keep it.

I use the AmazonBasics CD Wallet. It holds all of the tiles that are up to 4x4, for all of the expansions, with room to spare. Then I just put the tiles that are longer than 4 spaces in a Ziploc bag, separated by expansion.
That's an easy way for them to get dusty or damaged. Just buy a disc case like this one and sort them in alphabetical order.
Personally, I think displaying a bunch of game and movies cases looks really tacky...
I know some people like to show off their collections, but from a design perspective, it's just not attractive to look at.
I've got a huge game and blu-ray/DVD collection, and I keep them all in attractive storage cases like these: Option 1 or these: Option 2.
Then you can create really simple Google doc that is basically an inventory of your collection to show what sleeve number every disk is stored in. Access it through your phone or tablet, and you've got a constantly up-to-date list of your collection. Much more attractive and organized.

20-30 from any one store is almost guaranteed a "no". We need some of them for marketing and displays, and spare cases for 3ds games that get traded without cases. I also give some to people when they buy a game if they ask for a case, or if people are reasonable. But I wouldn't be able to give as many as you are talking about.
If you don't care what the actual cover art is (assuming you just want the case and will toss the art), if you catch it right after a big trade you may have better luck.

Putting them in a binder lets you more easily find a specific card they fit in these sheets even with card sleeves. I bought a nice binder that has slip sleeves in it so that I can store all the rules and skirmish/mission pamphlets along with the sleeved card sheets.The CD case holds any tile 4 spaces wide I keep the larger tiles separate and was able to fit every expansion in the CD case.

Grab a CD binder and throw the disks and covers in there, and forget about the plastic clamshell cases for now. Those are cheap to buy later anyway.

It's hard to say without knowing how much data you want to back up and what kind, but here it goes.
RAID is not backup, it's a stopgap measure for a very specific type of hardware failures. It's in the same class with surge suppressors.

The intervals given here are just a suggestion. Think about it like this: if all other backups are lost (mechanical failure, theft, fire, hurricane etc.), how recent do you want the surviving backup to be?
Optical discs are the single most reliable and most cheap form of backup for home use. They can take shocks and survive moves a lot better than mechanical HDDs. To put things in perspective: I'm currently copying data back to my NAS, from backup DVDs stored as described above, going back to 2000. I'm about 1/3 through ~500 discs and so far not a single failure.

I second this. The Mofi sleeves are absolutely the best. Anti-static as well. Avoid fully paper sleeves altogether--they definitely scuff your records. I also recently purchased Diskeeper 5.0 record sleeves as outer sleeves. They are a little tight and hard to get double albums and some gatefolds into, but losen up a little bit. They are really clear (as opposed to the sometimes cloudy outer sleeves I've gotten with used vinyl purchases) and they make the album art pop quite a bit. The reasons that show homes look great is that they're very minimalistic compared to a normal home. There's no daily clutter. And that shit just ain't happening around here.
Purging unnecessary stuff did help me a lot (we also had to downsize to a much smaller space so we had had no choice).
Small ideas that may help free up space: rid yourself of physical media. We went from seven bookshelves to two. I cried. A huge part of my identity was tied to being a reader. I liked being surrounded by my "conquests" and the knowledge contained therein. I got over it by realizing that getting rid of the books doesn't erase the fact that I've read them. We only kept what was most treasured, and I consoled myself by the fact that if I felt like I made a mistake sometime in the future I could always buy another copy. It's been four years and I've only just now asked for a replacement as a Christmas gift (the Anne of Green Gables series).
I did the same for my massive DVD collection. My first longtime boyfriend and I would go to Best Buy on "dates" and buy each other movies. Even after we broke up I carried on the tradition of buying almost every movie that caught my fancy. Now with all the streaming services and cable I hardly ever watched a physical copy. I sold my DVD collection except for a few favorites. I've replaced only my Indiana Jones box set. If you don't want to get rid of things, consider getting a big disc binder. My SIL just did this (she's a huge movie hoarder- this girl still has a VHS player and tapes). She trimmed the cover pictures down to size and recycled the rest of the packaging.
For my cds, I ripped all of those to my laptop and sold the real copies. I will burn a cd if I get a hair in my butt and want to listen to it in the car.
A big issue in my home was clothes. Specifically, my husband's. He was a passive/lazy hoarder when I first met him. Had no problems living in domestic squalor. Clothes were all over his bedroom floor, in his dresser, in his bedroom closet and in the TWO other bedroom closets. He was the characterture bachelor who would buy more socks instead of doing laundry. Plus, his dad would always buy him a shirt from everywhere dad traveled, so he had like 30 shirts he never wore but felt guilty about getting rid of (those shirts actually made the big move with us. Finally donated them after trying on each one and taking a photo of the front and back). Anyway, I got so frustrated with all of these unnecessary clothes that I forced him to basically put on a fashion show. Anything that he didn't like or didn't fit correctly got put into a donation bag. I made sure his front-pleated khakis went into the bag also lol.
My own clothes are hard to give up because I don't have a lot of nice stuff. But I try to hold myself to the same standards. I'm actually due for a wardrobe purge. Anything I haven't worn in the last year needs to go. It either is too small now or I never really liked how it looked on me. Graphic tees are my kryptonite. I've started to cut the pictures off the front and only save those. I know it's wasteful (because now no one can wear it), but I'm saving them to make a quilt in the future. I just need to learn how to operate a sewing machine... 😆 But even so, the fronts take up much less room than the entire shirt.
Kid clothes are out of control. I try to have some delineation between "home clothes" and "school clothes" but everything gets beat to shit anyway so I feel like it's a losing battle. If something is stained (and I can't get it out on the first try) or torn beyond an easy repair, I toss it. Otherwise it's just taking up space. Staying on top of clothes they've grown out off is hard. I try to do a biannual audit twice a year- after Christmas and after birthday.
When it comes to papers, anything that can be done electronically should be done electronically. I also do autopay wherever I can. Staying on top of my mail has helped a lot. I go from my mailbox straight to my recycle bin. If I want to look at the grocery store circular, I do it right there. Stuff that needs to be paid gets put on my desk, stuff that needs to be filed goes into the "to be filed" bin which I do maybe once every two months. Kid papers are harder. I save important stuff like report cards, and things that come home laminated, or stuff that I can tell they've put a lot of effort into. Ditto papers and worksheets usually go straight to the recycle bin. All the gray area stuff goes into a Rubbermaid tote that I've been ignoring for a while lol.
Toys are an issue. How old are your kids? Personally I hate small, crappy toys (like happy meal stuff). I donate those to the after school program for them to put into their prize box. How attached are your kids to their toys? You might be surprised at how willing they are to donate toys to other kids. Since it's almost Christmas, you could use this as an opportunity to have a conversation about helping those less fortunate- they would be giving a gift of happiness by passing on a toy/stuffy versus "discarding it and hurting its feelings." I do NOT advocate anthropomorphizing objects, but that is a conversation that I've had before, so I wanted to include it.
Finally, your husband's "comments" need to be shut the fuck down. Establish a list. If it's not on the list, it doesn't get bought. Do not write on the list for him. Welcome! I open all my steels simply they look to good to be covered by j.cards and stickers from the retailers. Also digital codes and the discs are inside and most movies I have steelbooks of I enjoy watching again. Very few of mine are still wrapped.
I put mine in plastic sleeves/bags (very cheap but definitely not most elegant option) I got on amazon but am currently looking in hard plastic options. retro protection seems to have some good ones.
If you buy multiple editions of the same title it’s gonna come down to how much you like the different editions and what your wallet says. I for example thinking about getting another blade runner 2049 just bc of the design and also replaced my kingsman steelbook for a newly released design and sold my previous one.
When you start looking at premium retailers (like manta labs or blu fans) you should check if it’s a WEA (world exclusive art - only available from one retailer) or WWA (world wide art - available from multiple retailers). They usually release 3 or 4 versions that mainly differ by the (Lenticular)slipcover and which format is inside (4K/2D/3D/digital). They also release a “1-click” that’s all versions of one release combined. So most often 3/4 times the same steelbook with 3 different slipcovers (of course there are always exceptions). The best chance to get one of those premium releases is through group buys in various forums (here on reddit, highdefninja, mediapsychos,...).

the difference is, is that those are copies. just burn another one off and no harm done. if they get killed in a fire, or someone uses them as frisbees or coasters it doesn't matter as you can pickup a 50 pack of CD-R's and burn more.
now when your paying almost $60 a disc in most cases and put them in a pile thats just gore. i can understand having a lot of discs and not wanting to dig though a shelf or dozens of stacks of games, but at least spend the $30 and get yourself a book or something to store them in. then at least they are stored properly and your not putting tons of scratches in them just stacked in a pile.

I have two of these. Each one can hold like 200 discs.
Every disc comes out of its case (which goes directly into the recycle bin), and the discs are placed in CD sleeves in one of these boxes. One box is for TV seasons; one box is for movies. Both are alphabetized. I have no doubles and never will. I buy movies without the cases when possible.
My collection started off that way in labeled ziplock bags but I recently switched over to this cd binder that fit every tile with room to spare. Next step are hero and overlord card binders and perhaps a miniature case.

Not official Ds cases, a bit flimsier and the color is slightly off from the official Nintendo ones but worth getting in bulk for my gba games. Get some clear vinyl sleeves for the outside, and vinyl/rice paper for the inner sleeves.
Prevents shelf wear on the outside, and the inner sleeve keeps you record away from paper sleeves which produce dust and fibers that can harm your record. You made the investment when you bought them, invest in their longevity.

The paper cover on the case still looks like it's in relatively good condition. You could get a blank Blu-ray case and then put the paper cover in that and it would look just fine besides that little corner but at least the spine would look good on your shelf and the case wouldn't be all cracked up

I order them from here, however it seems like they send a different brand every time I order, the first batch I got were OKER brand and those are the best ones with resealable tape on the edge of the flap, the other ones they send require you to tape them closed yourself since the resealable flap is more towards the middle of the flap and doesn’t work well with Blu-rays.

I often prefer listening to an entire album. It brings me back to the days of CD players (before mix CDs were the rage). You'd hop in a friend's car and sift through the giant book of cds to pick an album.
Plus--it helps tame the desire to just skip a song, hoping for something better.

RE: the amp, I have no experience with it, but if you are unsure about the amp and want to take it out of the equation entirely, look into powered/active speakers. You don't need an amp with those.

I recently did this and saved an entire book shelf.
I bought 2 similar binders, gutted my DVDs, TV, Blueray and CDs (kept about a dozen limited editions and fancy packaging as is).
I gave away all my CD cases to a friend who has a large CD collection and would like to repair some cracked jewel cases.
On suggestion by another user in this group.
1 - Soft-sided CD/DVD holder for the map tiles. You can fit all but the two largest in a CD wallet though the long ones overlap the top CD sleeve a bit when placed in the lower pocket.

3 - all cards are in thick sleeves to prevent damage. I use Mayday Games MDG-7075 and MDG-7078. Thinking I will laminate the character cards or use photo-negative sleeves to protect them (still investigating).
4 - 3 ring binder to store all the cards except consumables, condition cards, etc (basically anything that you only need to pull 'some' of at the start of a match).
Something along the lines of this (I bought them in both sizes for IA at my local FLGS, $0.25 / page isn't bad at all). 3 ring binder with velcro closure was $3.00 at GoodWill.
5 - small PLANO organizer for all of the extra figures that I can't fit into the foam organizer...looking at a small case for figures, waiting on funds and to see what the other expansions will require.
6 - random Acrylic organizers bought at the Dollar Store. We use them for storing tokens as the 3 compartment with lid has been perfect so far. Condition tokens, crates, terminals, etc all sorted to a degree into those.
Hope some of that makes sense. I opted for foam for the core set rather than the Broken Token organizer because I intend to paint our collection as soon as it warms up a bit, don't want to use primer indoors and its too cold and wet outside to properly paint.

I just did a quick search and found out DVDs have a life expectancy of 100 to 200 years. I would recommend you get a CD case holder for your disks. A quick example would be here.
She could try one of these. And buy her a stack of these and maybe a bunch of these, too. Tell her they take up a lot less room than the tapes and she can still label the cases. Maybe you can eventually get her to just connect a hard drive to her dvr and tell her it's still essentially a like physical copy, just on a more compact unit. If not, hopefully she's still happy with the dvd recorder.

Hey all,
Just ordered my first turntable (a Pro-Ject DC Esprit) and I'm extremely excited to receive it and play my first ever record! I'm ordering a few classics on Amazon to get started and I notice that some of them are remastered versions (e.g. Pearl Jam's "Ten"). How do these remasters hold up compared to the originals? Am I better off tracking down the originals of these classics or would I be okay ordering the remastered record? Also, is Amazon typically a solid place to order records, or am I better off getting better quality from another website? Unfortunately I live in a small town in Virginia with no dedicate audio store so anything in-person will be extremely hit or miss.
Part two: Should I be concerned about ordering inner sleeves for my records? Something like these or these? I know I need to go ahead and order a brush to clean the records every time before I play them, but I saw these sleeves as well and don't know if they're really even necessary or overrated, or if they're absolutely necessary. Thanks for any pointers for a newbie!
I found an old CD case that I still had CDs in. I had to clean off the dust and remove the old CDs, but afterwards it works very well.
The largest tiles will not fit, but I got all but maybe 2 from the core set into the binder.

If you want to keep the discs, you should be able to find a CD case somewhere. They still make those.
Sadly this is unrelated to asset protection and more how they process returns.
Because the product is sealed it will be placed back onto the shelves. Next person that buys it will be screwed over and now has to try to convince a manager that the 'sealed' package they bought had a fake disc in it.
Please do not ever actually do this, this is a good way to randomly screw people over. Wal-mart should be very careful about allowing returned goods to be sold. There's been instances where kids received 'new' MP3 players that had adult content placed on them and then returned to the store.

I use them alongside any sleeves that my old albums come with. These are better because I can easily slide the album in and out while keeping these sleeves inside the cover.
Muddiness is a big complaint. Sometimes master tape transfers to vinyl can enhance the good and bad. So perhaps it's even more so for the red vinyl edition. But do your own research, see if you find contrary testimonials. I've normally relied on Amazon, Discogs, and Steve Hoffman forums for my questions.

So recently I've noticed a lot of youtubers "bagging" their movies. I wondered what they were seeing them on their shelves. I personally liked how they looked in the clear covers...but I also realized they can help protect them as well! I cant recommend them enough now! I bought these from amazon for only 6.99.
