It's definitely a generic blue switch -Outemu- but it works great. For $20 when I desperately needed a numpad for some extended data entry was totally worth it. Very solid, long usb cord, metal plate with plastic bottom, and very compact, without tons of extra plastic like some of the other numpads.
Only complaint is the slightly unusual layout with the tab button and small + key.
Also it does output numpad codes.

One thing I like about this keyboard is the concept of additional keypad, if you don't like to spend an (absurd) $40 then you can just get a cheap keypad to plug in like this one, bam, you have a (somewhat) full size keyboard.
Also, the keypad that they sell have different switches for you to choose if you buy it separately.

I can't live without the numpad either, but I also need a lot of space for my mouse (very low sens), so I've kind of got the best of both worlds, with most of my keyboards being smaller form factors, and then having a separate numpad off to the side. I have this guy but there are a lot of other options out there.

Not sure how many F keys Windows would recognize but regedits (with SharpKeys or directly in the registry) would always be recognized.
The thing is that you need one that outputs numpad codes. If you do not get that, the numpad will output the numrow scan codes and remapping the numpad will remap the numrow above your alpha keys.
Here is a numpad for $20. It will output numpad codes that you can remap in the registry to be anything. It uses mediocre Cherry MX Blue clones but they aren't the worst. They are blue clones though so they "click" when pressed.

This is potentially completely backwards. Programming isn't data entry, and a numpad is not required for most tasks.
I can't speak to his work style or personal preferences obviously, but many programmers prefer smaller boards. I get by with this.
I would say get the TKL unless you think he can go down to 60%, it's ergonomically better (keeps the angle of your shoulders better when using a mouse) and then you can get a separate numpad if he really needs it, that can be put away when not in use, or placed on the left hand side.
You could always get a stand alone number pad. It's not quite the same as having one connected, but it's close!

(TL;DR down below)
This build was done in over the course of two days and roughly 21 minutes. Mostly due to other obligations but some planning and testing was done.
The labels I printed myself on a DYMO LT-100H, I also ordered an off brand pack of extra colors to bring some life to the project. The “button box” is a ROTTAT 22-key Numeric Keypad and was the most expensive part of the project.
In the little time that I’ve used it so far I enjoy the mechanical nature of the keys. Since I wear headphones when I play I like that I can feel when I’ve pressed the key. It adds a little extra pizzazz if you will and gives it a seemingly heavier stroke. The biggest con is programming it to the game, some of the keys are not usable with num-lock on/off. So it took some thinking to determine what I would want for the different “states” that I could enable with the num-lock key.
TL;DR $48.26 if you already own scissors, it’s cool so far and I’m happy with it.

I recommend this. It is a great numpad for the money, and can be a great project if you want to change the switches it uses.
Just buy a separate tenkey, this one is amazing for $20. Plus it's not anchored to the side of your keyboard, so you can put it to the left if you prefer to enter data with your left hand or put it to the right of the mouse so your hands can be closer together.
Honestly, I just use this one. The switches are kind of shit in my personal opinion, but it's easy to take apart and desolder so you can solder new switches into it. It's cheap and not too bad looking.
I actually have that numpad. It’s a $20-25 wireless numpad with what looks like cherry blue clones which have blue stems and are definitely clickier than my browns. The switches have “content” molded on them if that means anything. It’s a pretty great numpad with one issue: my dongle gives off cool whine. It’s not really that loud, but I have an extremely quiet PC and it’s high pitched enough to stand out while I’m not using the PC.

60% keyboards let you position your mouse closer to WASD, so I feel it is more ergonomic for gaming. I usually go [60% Keyboard] [Mouse] [Numpad] on my desk, because when I use a numpad I am rarely also using my mouse.
The good part about having a separate Numpad is I can put it in a drawer when I don't need it, or move it to my left and use it as a macro pad for other apps when I don't need to enter numbers.

This one might be tough to find, but it works amazingly. The weird fold system pushes the main hinge off to the side, so it is less likely to fold the moment you put it on your lap. It also completely hides the hinge when the keyboard is unfolded. A bit cramped, but the keys are properly clicky laptop keys.

If you're primarily going to be gaming, you might want to drop the full keyboard in favor of a bit of space plus one of these. Works nicely with a mouse if you rebind with HIDMacros. Also more tiny airport/college desk friendly. Example unit is $30
Similarly, you might want to try a half controller + mouse option using a device like the Nintendo Joy-Con's left unit. Drivers are still being worked on though, so only get this if you're up for beta troubles.

Firstly if you like black switches, I'd highly recommend getting Gateron Blacks. They're far smoother than Cherry.
I'd suggest picking up a VA87MR when it goes on Massdrop again, fits your requirements of floating keys, minimal branding, detachable cable, backlighting, and has Gateron Black as an option, as well as costing ~$130ish. Only thing it doesn't have is a steel finish which I don't think you'll be able to find on most boards. There's also a aluminium case available to purchase separately for $120 or so.
As for the numpad, the cheapest option would be to get a Jelly Comb numpad though it has some nonstandard key sizes (also not available in blacks). There's also the FC210TP.

They aren't expensive. Check out the MagicForce 21. Easily fitting your budget. Maybe check out a MagicForce68 keyboard while your at it, and have them match!
Oh man, yea that would definitely get annoying having to program every single key one at a time, something like QMK would be way more powerful and faster to use whenever you want to switch your layout since you just need to edit your layout in a text editor, turn it into a hex file and then flash it.

In my experience, the buttons on the tablets are far from suitable for tapping. I would just get a mechanical number pad like this if you don't want to pay for a full mechanical keyboard.

Not sure if you are just looking for a number pad, or a keyboard with a modular number pad.
Adesso has a relativity cheap number pad compared to other brands.
Keycool has a better looking number pad for a bit more. I'm not sure if the Keycool number pad's PCB supports LED's. There is another version of it that comes with LED's.
As for a modular mechanical keyboard other than the DSI keyboard, there is the Azio Mech4 and Mech5. They aren't the best looking keyboards but they do have a modular number pad.
For some reason, nobody wants to make a completely bog-standard mechanical keypad. It's absolutely infuriating. Any keypad you buy is going to make you decide.
There's a Filco keypad. But unlike a normal 108-key board's keypad, it has a double-aught. (This apparantly seems to be a thing in Japan, to reduce the number of zeroes one has to enter when dealing with currency.)
There's also the Adesso. But if you note, they give you an Escape key in the main cluster, which shoves all the keys over by one, while adding an entirely superfluous Print Screen button.
So I'm going with this option. Custom PCB.

Well, you can buy this, which is fully programmable - they only come in ML switches though. Genovation also has fully programmable keypads, but they can get pretty expensive.

I'm not an expert on CPUs, but the main factor that applies is the core speed and the number of cores. If you're not gaming or running CAD programs, you shouldn't need the extra cores as far as I can tell. RAM is also fairly important in the work that you're doing. It wouldn't be a step back from what I can tell, mainly because the i5 is a newer model.
In terms of the numbpad, only 15.6" and up will have them. 14" and below won't have them. You can always shop around for an external numbpad, and you actually may find it more comfortable than a regular one. Here's the cheapest, best rated one, and here's a search page for them.
You said that you like the Y40's look, so maybe consider its older brother - the Y50. The only thing about it that you won't like is that it has dedicated graphics (which you won't need). That will add to the weight and make it a pricier machine. Even so, the price is still in your range.

Does that accurately reflect your restrictions / preferences? The only real trouble I'm running into now are the first three bullets. To have a numbpad makes it a 15.6", and to be 15.6", it won't be very light without breaking $1000 easily.
Sorry to not be able to give you another model, but help me out with that one question, could you live with an external numbpad?
I really like the MS Designer BT keyboard. It feels a lot like the typecover and the layout is similar enough that my productivity doesn't drop when I switch between the BT KB (in the office) and the typecover (on the road)

I feel like for the money to buy the keyboard you could buy a used laptop and just use that.
This game will run on 10+ year-old computers.
Also the android version is way way out of date, you could play the newer versions as they come out.
This is a number pad with a numlock button. Turning the numlock on/off would change the function of the keys from numbers to arrows (or whatever else is written on them other than a number). Because you don't have a numberpad like that you have no use for a numlock button. You still have the same functions on your keyboard if you use the arrow buttons on the bottom right, or the numbers bar at the top. Hope this helps clarify things!

I would suggest taking a look at MSI Prestige Modern 14 because it is pretty light at 1.18 Kg (2.60 lb), has an aluminum chassis, fingerprint reader, has a great Full HD IPS display with good color coverage for photo editing, and over 8 hours of battery life. It doesn't have a number pad but you can just get one of these.
If you're keen on getting a laptop with a built-in number pad, then I would recommend the Lenovo Thinkpad P53s. It is a little bit heavier at 1.75 Kg (3.86 lb) but it has one of the best keyboards on the market and excellent reliability. A downside of this laptop would be the display from the base configuration (it only has 60% sRGB so it's not the best for photo editing), so I would suggest getting the 4K display at the cost of some battery life.

This setup is at the top of my list now.
Although I know people recommend a base, buy some nice switches, caps, lube and build yourself for an epic keyboard. My setup would be cherry mx brown with no option to change it looks like.
I have the same stick and using the rift. What works for me with extra buttons is that I place a razor orbweaver on the table to the left of my sticks and it works great!! You might not need that many extra buttons though and a tarurus would probably work just fine for cheaper. I was tempted to upgrade to the x 52 pro but I I love my current stick and I won't be upset if this breaks in me vs a 200 dollar stick that would make me very mad.

The raised layer in the 5 key should make it easy to memorize each button around it so you don't need to see it in Vr.

Completely unrelated but i feel like you might think this is cool. Its Outemu Blue Numpad (Outemu are Cherry knockoff's, but there pretty decent), and for $20, has full metal construction, braided cable, and some cheap Blue's. You may have seen it before cause it was on the front page like 4 months ago. Thought you might find it interesting because we have pretty similar tastes in keyboards IMO (i have been eying the model M and zealios purple for a while :P)

Not sure if it's 100% identical to OP's but the shell looks to be the same. The one I linked has Outemu Blues which are rather loud, and it has buttons not found on a normal 104-key keyboard's number pad.

My favorite time to play roguelikes is whenever I should be doing something important, look schoolwork (such as right now). Usually I'll play for a few hours, a couple of different games but I'll focus on one usually. Currently I am focusing on Caves of Qud and Cataclysm: Dark Days Ahead. I feel I might play some UnReal World today though, it's such a zen game.
Since I have a laptop the only thing that could be considered a set-up is I have bought an external keypad just for roguelike purposes.
Playing for a long time can be good or bad for me. It really depends on how cocky I get with my later-game characters, especially if the game has a part where it lets me be awesome, and lets me completely own everything (or I've just gotten lucky drops).

My first thought was to get a USB number pad like this and just stick it to the left hand side of your keyboard.
Here's the STL. The keyboard was a cheapo I bought locally which I can't find online, but another user in these comments found a really similar looking one off amazon, here's a link for that. It's similar enough that I bet you can get away with tweaking the scale in the slicer at most.
So the 10 digit bit should be fine, I would create and enclosure for the pi in the end of the box, you will need a number pad, carve an insert out of the wooden box

Fixed my problem on the cheap, then I realized how little I actually use a numpad.
Rantopad is a very solid keyboard, Gateron Reds are incredible and are even smoother than Cherry Reds in my experience.

I got one of these USB keypads to use for extra buttons when I ran out of space on the wheel. Works pretty well, since you can feel around for it while you're in VR, and the mechanical switches mean you're not worried about missing the key.
Don't worry about improving your lap times right now. Worry about trying to run the same lap 5 times in a row. Once you get the consistency down, THEN focus on the actual times. It's hard to know if a change you made has worked or not without having the ability to repeat it!
And as others have said, starting from the back is a good way to get your SR up, so that you're in ranked races. They're much less of a free-for-all, and it's a lot more calming to be with people who won't randomly cut across or do something weird.

I know the teensey can easily be used as hid input, but you'd still have to have a wire. Not sure what's you have to do to make it wireless. Possibly use it as a receiver then have another arduino or teensey with a transmitter at the location you wanted hooked into the pad.

First Google result tells me that it's about 30 bucks. But the point is, I need both wireless mouse and keyboard, and both device require me to trade off between the comfort of my back and my wrist.

Not really. You'd need to get a 15.6" laptop for that and the U530 costs quite a bit more.
You can get an external 10 key if that makes it easier.

I have gone from a full size down to a TKL and will have a poker in a little over a month. I rely a lot on the whole arrow section so a poker might have not been the best investment. Your main computer wouldn't notice any performance difference whether you are streaming or not, since outputting to the capture card of the "Streaming PC" is no different than using another monitor (or in the case of using a splitter, no difference at all).

It tends to be easier to simply use some form of remote desktop software. I've used software before that binds hotkeys on my keyboard to commands on the "Streaming PC", but it had its bugs. The HD PVR2 will see it as any other input. Whether you need to capture the window of the Hauppauge software, or use the DirectShow device natively in whatever program you prefer (OBS?) is up to the streaming software in question.

Try this. 10 bucks and you got a keypad. I never could get into roguelikes until I started buying laptops with keypads. Sure, there are other ways to play them, and there are probably other ways I could wear my pants, like tied around my head or something, but they aren't real appealing =)
Tho if you're not real familiar with the genre, I'd advise playing a few of the ones off the sidebar to get a feel for them. Maybe also get comfortable with both the meaning and spirit of the Berlin definition of roguelike. Before the argument erupts, no, strict adherence to the Berlin interpretation isn't essential to being called a roguelike, but it should have most of the things mentioned. Otherwise you're making (insert game type) with roguelike elements, often pejoratively known as a roguelite.

Everything works on it fine. I only ever used it for Elite Dangerous so I'm not sure how it would fair with plane based games. Since this is a starter HOTAS, it didn't have as many buttons/inputs that I would have liked so I got a numpad for all the extra buttons I needed. Other than that, it's a solid plug & play HOTAS.

A case made up of layers of acrylic 😛. Most keyboard cases now are injection molded plastic or, on the higher end, milled aluminum. Layered (or sandwich) cases are made up of 3-4 thin layers of something, usually acrylic or a mix of acrylic and aluminum. I have a layered case on a board right now that has an aluminum bottom with an acrylic mid layer and an acrylic plate. Because the case is just a few things layers, these tend to be some of the thinnest cases.

The return key looks pretty standard in the amazon pictures... What was weird about it?
I have a standalone numpad that I pull out when I need to do some data entry. I also usually put it on the left side when I use it so that I don't have to move my mouse over. It takes a little getting used to, but it's certainly not hard!

It's almost definitely the cause of the problem. I'd keep a wrist rest around and just try to consciously think about it. Maybe set a timer somewhere just to remind you to think about it. Retraining old habits keeps you sharp 😉

If you love mech keyboards you might like the T420/T520/W520 keyboards the best. Lenovo changed to island keys for the T/W#30 models, but some of the T/W#30 models can be modified with the T/W#20 keyboard. I've only used the newer style, but I type plenty, and I like it fine. If a smaller Thinkpad catches your eye a USB numpads are available.

I currently have a similar setup with my HHKB and I use my mouse right in the middle. I find it much easier to access everything and it's more ergonomic because less distance between your mouse to typing.

I'm into simracing and want to use a USB Keypad as an auxilary button box on my sim rig for extra functions like ignition, headlights, wipers, etc.

It's a Poker 2 and mechanical numpad I got for $20. The Poker is browns and the numpad is (very satisfying clicky) blues. I got the keycaps on Massdrop and found I couldnt go full blanks so I put the numbers/brackets etc back in.
It should work whether or not a keyboard is even plugged in, the software your mouse is running through makes the computer think your mouse is a keyboard when you press the button. You could test that just by unplugging your keyboard.
And like I said, I also am rather attached to the idea of having a number pad which is why I only caved when I found standalone mechanical number pads. Like this one
The gateron greens feel pretty nice to me. I believe they're the same as blues, just with a heavier spring. I think the extra weight makes them feel a bit smoother and also changes the sound they make very slightly.

So I have two questions- I am going to be rebinding all the keys on the keypad, so I want to get keycaps with custom letters/symbols on them (nothing that wouldn't be found on a full keyboard), so 1) where can I get these and 2) Is there a better keypad keypad out there, or will this keypad do?
I'm new to mechanical keyboards, so honestly I just wanted to try one out for a cheap price. The reviews on that keypad say the switches are a lot clickier and louder than Cherry MX blue switches.

Outemu blues. I've been using one for about a year for my streaming hotkeys, it's still working great.
Here is mine I followed this guide. When I bought mine it was only $14 on Amazon. If you start with the Jellycomb Numpad, you don't have to buy switches or a case... Just the Teensy 2.0 and the diodes.
There may be other options, this one is very easy to get you started.
There's definitely cheaper numpads, I have a Leopold FC210TP but it's still $60. There's the jelly comb for $18 but if you want cherry switches or just a white higher profile case I think I saw the Varmilo VA22M or something similar drop recently.

So my TKL keyboard comes in today and I'm super excited, but I know I'm going to miss my numpad at least once a week as I have rotating duty on handling inbound requests for the company that require quite a bit of data entry.

I got one of these to put next to my throttle
Then with AutoHotkey, I made a script so that when numlock is disabled, the number keys act as the F keys so I can use the radio. It gives me enough keys to map for the little bit that doesn't fit on my HOTAS.
Works really well, and since it's just a few keys, it's really easy to go by touch.
You could use a more elaborate arrangement of modifiers, like this guy does.
Or back on your original idea, some people have used a USB numpad for that purpose.
And it's always possible to DIY something more elaborate like these guys did.

Magicforce 68 with outemu switches is the cheapest keyboard that I would personally recommend, it's $40. If you don't care about quality at all, I'm sure you could find a really cheap $15-30 keyboard on aliexpress.

Alternatively, the Jelly Comb numpad is only about $15, but it only comes with blue switches. You could swap them out yourself though.

The number pad is a Magicforce Smart 21 Key. On Amazon, it's marketed as a Qisan Mechanical Numeric Keypad. It's rocking Gateron Reds, which I'm not terribly fond of, but are comfortable enough for my basic data entry/programming needs. I'm left handed, but I use my mouse in my right hand, so I find the placement of the keypad to be extremely comfortable. My biggest gripe is that it has a fixed USB cable, but given that it was only $30, I can't really complain.

Pro M is good, it's just the keycaps that kinda suck. They aren't any worse than most others though.
You could also try a separate numpad and position it wherever's most comfortable.

There's the Ducky Pocket, which can also be used as a calculator.
For a less-expensive option, maybe the Magicforce numpad. I don't really know if it's good or bad, but a lot of people like the Magicforce 68.

Has anyone given those mechanical usb number pads a shot? Sure, they take up one extra usb slot, but there are times where I've thought of giving it a shot - specially on my surface and such.
EDIT: Someone mentioned the Ducky, THANK YOU - I remember hearing about it, thinking it was awesome, than a while later forgot what it was even called. No manner of 'mechanical number pad' would come up with a hit to the ducky pocket. Kept thinking maybe I was just imagining it at this point...

the tricky thing about switches is that it's kind of a myth that one switch is better than another for typing or gaming. ultimately, personal preference and what you like will be more important than whatever is on a spec sheet. if there's an electronics store near you that has mechanical keyboards on display, i would strongly recommend heading over there and trying some out before buying, as mechanical keyboards can feel quite different than regular rubber dome keyboards. even if they only have gaming brands available, it would still give you a good indication of what you're in for if you do buy a mechanical keyboard.
i'd say the ducky one 2 mini would be a great choice since you could always just get an external keypad, some of which would offer more functionality than a regular keypad anyway.

They aren't as compact as yours though. It might offer a USB control board to cannibalize. I made a mounting base for HOSAS system that also has one of these types of 9-keys screwed down next to one of the sticks.
I mean... you can buy a mechanical USB one for a few bucks...
Most of the price of the Ducky Pocket comes from it being a mech.

As an accountant (A&A), I recommend this instead. Unless the RGB is worth the extra $30. Gateron browns rather than cherry, half the price, and I can't imagine a situation in which you'd need a pocket calculator as opposed to being within 24" of a computer. Ofc, /u/gizzardgullet posted that his wife rarely has hers plugged in...I didn't go into accounting because of my imagination! I also may have an irrational distaste for wireless things.
