Invest in a safety razor and some blades and you will be set. Those 200 blades should last you for a decade unless you shave daily.

Im not kidding. Safety razor blades are mere pennies and the razor should last longer than you.

u/nitt · 307 pointsr/reddit.com

I have a solution.

Double edged safety razor: http://www.amazon.com/Merkur-Model-180-Handled-Safety/dp/B000NL0T1G/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1301803036&sr=8-1 I use that one.

Blades: http://www.amazon.com/SHARK-CHROME-DOUBLE-SAFETY-BLADES/dp/B003BWQX46/ref=sr_1_1?s=hpc&ie=UTF8&qid=1301803078&sr=1-1 I use those at 17 cents a blade, but you can get much cheaper ones too.

This switch has saved me so much money and gives me a better shave. You will also want some shaving soap or cream with a brush. Enjoy

/r/wicked_edge has lots of great advice. I'll boil a lot of it down for you though..

  1. Stop using the 17-bladed nuclear-powered vibrating cartridge monsters with extra lubricating strip and kung-fu grip. Similarly, no electric shavers. They're really electric hair-ripper-outers. Not kidding. Kick it old school, like your grandfather. Look at a double-edge safety razor, or if you're really looking to go all-in, consider a straight razor.

  2. Think about your shaving cream. Does it come out of a can using aerosol? Maybe rethink that too then. Plenty of options out there that don't involve chemical-laden aerosol-propelled goo. You can even really turn the clock back with a cup/bowl/mug and brush setup to whip up a nice lather. I'm a fan of Taylor of Old Bond Street. But, I've also used DR Harris products, and they're quite nice as well. One of the side benefits of my former job was all the trips to London, so I could just stop into the ToBS shop on Jermyn Street. Sadly, those days are past, so I rely on the kindness of co-workers that still go over. :) It's easy enough to get their products in the US, it just costs a bit more.

  3. If you go the DE route, get a sample pack of different blades. Different blades work differently on different guys. For me, Derby blades are death. For others, they're amazing. For me, I work well with Astra, or can manage Feathers if I'm really careful (they're super sharp). My best blade though, has been a Personna medical prep blade.

  4. Shave in passes. Do a with-the-grain pass, followed by an across-the-grain pass. If you're really not there yet, you can add an against-the-grain pass, but that's a pretty advanced move. Remember - you're doing multiple passes. You don't need to remove every bit of hair the first pass. You don't press the razor into your face (as you're probably used to!). This razor has heft, and a blade that's really sharp. You're accustomed to a lightweight razor that has blades that are as dull as a hunk of cardboard compared to your garden variety DE blade.

  5. Use a quality aftershave. Try to avoid ones that contain alcohol, as it dries out the skin. I love the Nivea sensitive skin stuff. I can get it for way cheaper than that link shows at Walgreens, Target or Wegmans though.

Many folks will try to sell you on the economics here, and how much money you'll save by shaving this way. While possible, it's not necessarily so. One can go bonkers and spend hundreds on the best gear if they wish. BUT, you don't have to.

For me, I use a $30 brush from whippeddog.com with a $5 mug from Target. My cream (ToBS Jermyn St) runs about $15 a tub, which lasts me probably 6-9 months. My daily shaver is a $30 Edwin Jagger, and my blades run about $30 for a 100-pack. I get 2-3 shaves from each blade.

If you run the numbers, you'll likely come out ahead by going to DE, get better shaves, and have better skin as well. It sure was cheaper for me. I used to go through a cartridge a week. So, that's 4 carts a month. I was spending $30-ish every other month on 8-packs of cartridges, or about $3.75 per week. Nowadays, that's 2 blades a week, at ~$0.30/blade, that's $0.60/week in blades. That's a massive savings alone.

You can do the ROI analysis for yourself. Take into account what you'd spend on shaving supplies, and calculate at which points the cost lines cross (ie break-even).

Tl;Dr OP delivers/is a faggot.

Haha, all right, I'll tell you everything I know. First, get these:

http://www.amazon.com/Merkur-Model-180-Handled-Safety/dp/B000NL0T1G/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1346053195&sr=8-1&keywords=safety+razor

http://www.amazon.com/Taylor-Street-Sandalwood-Shaving-Cream/dp/B0007MW2ZW/ref=pd_sim_hpc_13

http://www.amazon.com/Philips-Norelco-BodyGroom-BG2040-34/dp/B0037HP9OA/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1346053392&sr=8-1&keywords=Body+hair+trimmer

First, shampoo your groin hair with the strongest shampoo you can think off. The drier and fluffier the hair down there, the easier this is going to be.

Second, use the body hair trimmer while in the shower to get all the hair everywhere as short as you possibly can without making yourself uncomfortable. If you want to start above the dick, then start there to get accustomed to how the trimmer works then work your way to all the areas you wish to tame. I also shave my gouche etc, it's up to you. This will make the next part a lot easier.

Get some water and get it boiling hot. Then let it cool until you can touch it without seriously hurting yourself. The hotter the water the better but don't burn yourself. Now take the brush and soak it with the hot water. Then swish it around in the soap until you build up a nice foamy lather.

Lather that shit on there!

Here's the most time consuming part. You want to first go with the grain, shaving wherever you are first comfortable with. You want to use as small of an angle as you possibly can, I shave with the blade almost parallel to the skin. You do NOT push hard! It's a light grazing! LIGHT GRAZING! LIGHT! You use the weight of the head of the razor that is ALLLL the pressure you need! If it isn't enough pressure, increase the angle slightly.

EVERY time you pass by with the razor, you wash the blade in the water and apply new soap with the brush until you're satisfied. This keeps the soap and hair from clogging the blades and cutting something or ripping out a hair.

Always switch sides of the razor with each pass. This ensures near uniform wearing of the edges.

After you have passed by everything going with the grain, do the same against the grain. After you've done that, I go perpendicular to the grain for a grand total of three passes. Always cleaning the blade after every stroke, always re-soaping until you're satisfied.

After you've shaved everywhere, It's supposed to take a long time! Hurrying leads to awful bloody cuts! Then you LIGHTLY apply aftershave. It will always burn some, but not as much as it normally would! You whatever aftershave you have on hand.

For the balls, stretch out the skin as much as you possibly can and DO NOT APPLY PRESSURE! The same goes for the skin on your shaft if you have hair there.

Finally, baby powder that bitch! This will ensure you stay dry and clean and fresh all day!

At first, it will itch. There's no avoiding it. After you've shaved down there maybe 6 times, the itching will reduce until you don't notice it. ALWAYS USE A FRESH RAZOR! They're like less than 8 cents a piece, that's worth not having to worry about bleeding all over the inside of your pants!

And that's how I shave.

For those of you who don't have the time but still want to get the job done, here was an insightful post by reddit user: OftenStupid

Disclaimer: If you wish to ritualize some portion of your life, the above is wonderful and I can see how it would be very satisfying. However, If your goal is to shave your junk:

I'm with SuccumbedtoReddit, the guide reads like it was purposefully written for hipsters. What the fuck, a brush? a FUCKING BRUSH? Old-school decapitate-yourself razor?

Please, just get a decent razor like you would for say another part of your body that you do not wish to mutilate like say....ummm.. your face.

Use some warm water, you're in the fucking shower just turn the knob goddamn it.

Apply some shaving cream. No you won't make it, nor handcraft it nor pick it from the freshest cream-trees growing on the purest mountain tops. You'll go out and buy a can that reads "shaving cream" on the label. Apply cream. Fap, if the mood takes you there, as smearing warm creamy-like substances on your privates might do.

Shave. Apply some pressure. Shit, with most modern razors you can fucking hate-stab yourself with it without drawing blood. If you want to be cautious, start gently and proceed according to how much time you want to invest.

Wash it off, re-apply shaving cream, shave against the grain.

Trim the hair on the border between penis and belly, because no-one likes the "this area has been nuked from orbit" look.

Wash off, endure the itchiness for a day or two.

Play with yourself whenever and however you wish to, without the excuse that it's somehow a necessarry procedure.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

You may have more nicks if you rush TOO much, but any nicks you get will be tiny and won't hurt or bleed that much. The above is more or less what I do when I'm in a rush, minus the shaving cream.

u/Synaesthesiaaa · 50 pointsr/justneckbeardthings

Can't go wrong with 100 blades for $12. Those Gillette devils aren't getting any more of my money.

u/a_dream_to_meat · 38 pointsr/funny

Magic Shave

Trust me.

Test a patch of on your inner thigh first to make sure it doesn't irritate your skin.

I normally clean things up a bit with a trimmer and then mix equal parts Magic Shave with water in a small Tupperware container. Then I slather it all over my shaft/ balls/ taint/ all the way up my butt crack. Let it sit for 4 1/2 minutes and then jump in the shower with a wash cloth. The hairs will wipe right off.

Viola. Smooth as silk.

u/throwaplay · 32 pointsr/malefashionadvice

Ditch the plastic razor and generic shaving cream. You can get an amazing, stubble free, longer lasting shave for way (WAY) cheaper by switching to a double edge razor.

Here is what I recommend:

DE razor: Merkur 37C Slant HD Safety Razor $40

Razor blades: Persona Israeli, Derby, Kai, Shark (100 Pk. $18) or Feathers. $20-$50 100 Pk.

Brush: Any brush from a local pharmacy. $5-$15

Soap: Wilkinson Sword, Proraso, or Williams. $3-$10

Mug: Any coffee mug is fine.

The razor will last you at least two life times, a 100 pack of razor blades should last you a couple of years, ditto for the brush, and the shaving soap will probably last a couple of months. The shave will be godly once you get the hang of it. Make sure to get a good lather and to shave at a slow pace.

I recommend lurking the Badger & Blade forum and watching the videos by mantic59. B&B is the best shaving resource in the Internet and mantic is a shaving god (and also a redditor!)

Once you are more experienced, I recommend getting a good badger shaving brushing and stepping up to the Feather razor blades. These blades can be your best friend or your worst enemy. Treat it with respect.

Watch this video to get started

Thank you! I love the primer but i want to experiemt with new things. The makeup artists i follow reccomend the nivea after shave balm as a primer. i realllly want to try it. The mac has lasted me ages! I still have quite a bit left after using it for months

u/ServerOfJustice · 22 pointsr/AskReddit

You should consider a safety razor, you can get more info at /r/wicked_edge if you like. You can get a decent set up for less than $50 and buy razorblades for less than 10 cents each(here's 100 blades for $8.20) while getting a much better shave.

u/littlehuman7 · 17 pointsr/casualiama

If it makes you feel better, no one ever taught me about beard growth or how suits should fit or stuff like that. I've just figured it all out for myself in the past few years. Get yourself some beard balm/oil like this or this, and also a boars hair brush like this. Use the balm/oil while it's still just slightly damp after the shower, followed by a brushing after. Your beard will soon be a thing of manly silkiness. Here's style and trimming maintenance.

This is what my partner suggested, and he's the type to do soooo muuuch research and compare everything. Apparnetly this is the version that porn stars use... :) I've used it for the last year, and it's been chill. Slower than a razor, but I don't cut myself, and less razor burn issues, although it's still a thing.

u/uiucmike · 16 pointsr/UIUC

wow thx <3 <3 <3

But honestly, literally anyone can be attractive. If that's a major roadblock for you to improve your social skills, do soemthing about it; give yourself a makeover! Following is subjective, I guess, but..

Get a good haircut. 90% of the time, that just means "short on the sides, longer on top". LookAfter on green is really good. You could probably just be like "yo hook me up" and they can give you something trendy. Put this in your hair. Shower in the morning, and blowdry it instead of letting it air dry.

Revamp your wardrobe. Get tighter clothes. A pair of these will get you far. If you can button them without causing lots of physical pain to yourself, they aren't too tight (and they will stretch). Try to avoid washing jeans in the washing machine. If you do, air dry them. If your jeans fit well, chances are they won't after you run them through the dryer.

Stay away from gym shoes. A pair of black and a pair of white vans will take you a long way.

Stay away from overusing graphic tees. Grey is a great colour that looks good on everyone. Black and other dark colours are good too. Sweatshirts usually look p good as long as they are a tight fit. Henleys are easy and lit too.

Stay away from cargo shorts. Tight, coloured, mid-thigh shorts are "in" and look better. Looser but still short & thin neutral-coloured shorts are ez too. Especially for spring/summer.

Most of the stuff from Express, H&M, Zara, sometimes A&F, etc. is good.

Qt, bold briefs/boxer briefs from calvin klein, aussiebum, etc. are lit too. People won't often see them, obviously, but it's an easy confidence boost.

Don't discount the importance of being confident. Milo Yiannopoulos isn't actually that attractive, but he is 110% confident, so he tricks you into adding like 4 points. Fix your posture. Sit up straight, stand up straight w/ your shoulders back. Your body will feel better, and you will come off much more confident. Body language is important. The same is true about smiling more, etc.

Take care of your teeth. Crest Whitestrips can save your life if you are a soda/coffee drinker. Floss twice a day, maybe get a tongue brush.

Keep your body hair under control with one of these and a decent razer. Another thing that people only will see if you wear like a real deep v-neck or unbuttoned Henley or when you are sexing, but a confidence booster nonetheless.

Keep your hygiene up to par. Shower often, wash thoroughly (a loofah or washcloth is a good investment) with some kind of good-smelling body wash, wear deodorant, and get some kind of cologne that isn't axe (one of the < $30 ones from Amazon is fine). Also, idk why straight boys often don't wash their butthole, but wash your butthole.

Take care of your skin. This will save your life. If you have acne and that doesn't work well enough, invest in a proactiv subscription or something. You will look and feel much better. Don't be afraid of concealer to cover up some particularly egregious blemishes. Idk anything about makeup brands, but something like this (except that matches your skin tone) is great because it doubles as a mild acne treatment. This (or any spray product with Salicylic acid) will help immensely if you have body acne.

Get in shape. You will look and feel better! You sound like you don't have much time to go to the gym, which is fine. Muscly, skinny and toned, or super skinny are all "trendy" looks. Just avoid dad bod. Skinny can be achieved just through diet and optionally doing body weight exercises at home (crunches, pushups, etc.) or getting a pair of weights. Most importantly, make sure the fit of your clothes matches your body. All of those 3 benefit from snug fits. Dad bod "benefits" from a looser fit, but that's because your clothes are trying to hide your body shape rather than accentuate it, hence why it isn't ideal.

Before interviews/career/fairs/going on a date/whatever other important event, max all this out. Aside from looking good, you will feel good, and you will have a much easier time being confident. When talking to recruiters, especially during the interview, I find that when you feel good about yourself, nerves dissipate hardcore to the point where even when you are stuck, you don't really get that sinking feeling in your stomach. Smile and nod a lot, sell yourself with your strong, confident energy. If you seem like a fun person to work with (and look at), that can make up for a lot of your "faults".

I got all of my interviews that I got at the Expo this year wearing shorts and flip-flops (went during lunch break at work, so didn't have time to change). Just be a chill, happy, and humble dude/dudette, but own the fact that you feel good about yourself. Ppl dig that, especially when a lot of kids are in the same situation you are (ie. don't feel attractive or comfortable talking to people, or their whole life is just academics).

Edit: Oops also do your eyebrows and keep your facial hair in check.

u/CommanderBunny · 16 pointsr/TheGirlSurvivalGuide

Awesome! All right, here we go.

Razors:

The difference between men and women's razors is that women's have longer handles and a smaller aperture for the blade. Men's usually have a wavy little comb bit that lifts up their thicker beard hair to cut.

The one I personally recommend is the Weishi. It's $17 bucks, and the metal is really light, but I ended up getting used to that fairly quickly. Not a big initial investment and perfectly adequate for my needs.

I see Murker recommended fairly often. I hear they are okay, if overpriced. I personally hated it, lol. They are definitely geared towards beards and did not play nice with my pale little legs.

You could also go for the vintage Lady Gillette. I paid $30 for mine on ebay and it's got a nice long handle, good grip, and nice weighty metal. This was actually my first purchase and I'm still really happy with it. Considering I'm happy with the Weishi, though, I'd probably just repurchase that one if I ever lose mine.

Blades:

Now this one might take some trial and error. Everyone has different hair and different skin and every razor brand shaves a little differently.

A lot of people start off with a multipack to get a feel for the different blades and then narrow it down to brands they like. I think it's a great idea and probably your best bet. I'll still mention my experiences though.

STAY AWAY FROM DORCO. They are bullshit. I'm not a fan of Gillette brand blades either except for the Wilkinson Sword and they're kind of expensive at $20 for 100. Derby is also just okay.

Feather: give the sharpest, closest shave ever. So sharp that you can cut yourself and you won't even notice until the trail of blood starts going down the drain. Great blades, and a ton of people like them, but I found that they dull too quickly for leg real-estate and are too scary sharp for sensitive bits.

Voskhod: Sharp, reliable, lasts through a few shavings. I quite like this one and have repurchased it. They are good, solid razors that gave a decent shave. Good for all-over.

Shark: My favorite at the moment. Comparable to Voskhod except I feel they might give a slightly closer shave and dull a little bit faster. If I had both in the bathroom I would probably choose Shark for the legs and Voskhod for everywhere else.

Astra: Worked adequately. Shave isn't bad or great, just reliable. Worked on the legs but not as good in other places. Wasn't worth a repurchase.

Lord: I think these actually lasted the most shaves out of all of them, at about 4 uses per blade. I think I had the least incidence of cuts with these but the shave wasn't as close as I wanted. My shaves usually last two or three days with the other razors but with this one I was feeling it lasted only 1-2. I think these are literally the opposite of the Feathers in terms of their qualities.

M'kay, that's all I can think of for now. I hope this helps!

u/arbarnes · 16 pointsr/wicked_edge

You can do better for less money shopping on sites other than Amazon, but you can do okay there if you're careful.

For a razor I'd get an Edwin Jagger Kelvin. The Parker 24c is another viable option; I just don't like the way it looks. And if you're the clumsy type, the Merkur 34c is less likely to break if you drop it or knock it off the counter. In terms of shave quality, I'd say Merkur < Edwin Jagger < Parker, but the differences aren't huge. For build quality EJ is a big step above Merkur and Parker.

There are some great synthetic brushes on the market, but AFAIK none of them are available on Amazon. Which means, in your price range, that boar bristles are the only viable option. The Omega 10049 is a big brush that will break in quickly. I actually prefer the small Semogues such as the 1460, but they take a ton of time (or a fair amount of work) to break in.

For shave soap, I really like Pre de Provence. It's a big puck of hard soap, so it'll last you a very long time. Cella is another top performer (far better than, say, Proraso) for an affordable price. I've also heard good things about Soap Commander and Wet Shaving Products' "Rustic" line. Whatever you do, stay away from Col. Conk and Blades Grim.

For blades, just don't. Go to Try a Blade and get a double helping of their top ten sampler. Once you've found your favorite blade, go back to Amazon and see if you can't get a good price on 100 of them.

If there's anything else you need from Amazon, get it and pick up your shave gear elsewhere. For example, the Maggard Razors budget starter kit is outstanding, and is about to get better with the inclusion of their self-branded synthetic brushes. For $40 you can put together a kit that's a step up from the $60 worth of stuff I recommended on Amazon. But if it's gotta be Amazon, you at least have some viable options.

Edited to add final paragraph.

u/promet2 · 14 pointsr/BuyItForLife

I'm a huge fan of Merkur razors. Well, at least mine. I bought it a long ass time ago and it'll outlive me, barring loss/theft.

u/Dajbman22 · 13 pointsr/AskMen

I mean if you're ok with just trim, not all gone (full shaving is a lot to ask some guys), buy him this groomer.

It works great and my wife really likes how it looks with the #3 comb.

u/PolarisDiB · 12 pointsr/Frugal

> FYI, I shave probably every other day and get 3-4 shaves out of each blade.

I finally figured out that I can get away with only shaving once a week.

I'm a slow beard-grower and it's mostly a goatee, so by the end of the week I have a nice, attractive, and even stubble like the ones that some men work to get the right balance of. I look best with either that stubble or fully shaved, from there my beard starts getting patchy until it's long, and then when it's long it just poofs out and goes everywhere.

I also can use a blade three times before I need to dispose of it.

SO, a single DE blade lasts me three weeks, which means if I ever get through all these sample blades I bought (I have a favorite so far, Shark Super Chrome), I can buy a pack of 100 for 16.99, that's 17 dollars for 300 weeks...

... in other words, seventeen dollars for six years. In fact, that investment is on a long enough time scale I'm wondering I shouldn't just buy a smaller pack because I don't know what my lifestyle will be like six years from now.

Blade Sampler Pack, $17

A good book on the subject, $10

Which is also ~$50

u/Aozi · 9 pointsr/wicked_edge

>Is there any practical difference between DE and straight razor shaving as far as cost involved, difficulty in shaving, or maintenance?

Yes, yes and yes.

Lets break it down individually

Cost

Upfront costs

DE: A good DE and a blade sampler will run you about 50$, if you want to spend more you can get some better quality stuff.

SR: A good brand new SR will generally run you at least 70$, a strop will be another 20ish

Both DE's and SR's can be found used from ebay or several other sites for a lot cheaper. E.g WhippedDog's sight unseen razors

Maintenance costs:

DE: DE's are usually very durable and require very little maintenance, just rinse it off well after shaves and take it apart every now and again for a good wash. The main cost will be with blades. The blade mileage and type will vary based on the person shaving. Some use one blade one time and then discard it, others get a 3-5 good shaves from a single blade. So YMMV, generally 100 blades will run you for 10-30$ depending on the blades.

SR: A straight razor needs to be stropped, hence why I incorporated the strop into the upfront costs. Now your SR will also need to be honed and sharpened a few times a year, how often you need to sharpen it really depends on how much you use it and how good care you take of it. When sharpening you ahve two choices; you either learn to do it yourself or you send it to a pro.

Professional sharpening will generally cost you anywhere from 20-50$. But you can also do it yourself, a set of whetstones will cost you about 100-150$ for the cheaper ones like this set. You can also get a cheaper deal from WhippedDog. There are tons of other waterstones around, if you want to improve your own results, jsut do some research.

Now the nice thing about sharpening your own SR, you're now set for life. That one SR and your whetstones will probably be enough to shave yourself for the rest of your life and then some.

Conclusion:

If you're willing to spend more money upfront for an SR, strop and stones, which can run you for about 200-300$, you will save money in the long run, since you never need to buy more blades again nor send your SR to get sharpened. This also means that you have to put in effort to learn to sharpen your SR. If you don't want to do it, and send you SR to a pro a few times a year, then a DE will probably be cheaper.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

One more thing about cost, if you're planning on switching, I highly recommend getting a full set. That includes a brush, cream/soap, alum and after shave. Check the kit suggestions on the sidebar for more info.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

difficulty in shaving

The straight razor is often considered the most difficult shaving tool to use. You can literally kill yourself with it if you mess up really badly. This is because there is nothing protecting the blade, if it's in the wrong angle; it'll slice your skin. This is also the biggest strength of the Straight Edge, you have complete control over the blade.

The double edge was created to make shaving a more safe practice, hence why it's also called the safety razor. At worst you'll end up with small nick and shallow cuts. You will not have as much control over the blade as you do with an SR but you will still be able to get superb shaves.

I'd say the SR is more difficult to master, but also much more satisfying, at least in my opinion. Regardless of which you use, you will have to relearn shaving from the start. So don't be scared of a few nicks.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

>What kind of recurring costs am I going to deal with, as compared to disposable razors?

Well, this depends on what disposable razor you are using. So for the sake of comparison let's talk about the newest Gilette Fusion proglide. On Amazon 8 Proglide blades will cost you about 30$. Now some sources say that gilette cartridges will last up to 5 weeks, a year has about 52 weeks so by this standard you need 11 cartridges per year.

Going by the amazon cost of 3.62$ per cartridge, you're spending about 39,82$ a year for blades. Again, your mileage may vary. Only you know how long your cartridges last.

Now lets talk about a DE blades. According to Badger and Blade the average is 3 shaves per blade with a 3 pass shave. Now for the sake of keeping things simple; lets assume that you shave once per day and do 3 passes. So a DE blade will last you for 3 days.

EDIT: In case you're not familiar with the idea of multiple pass shaves, it basically means that instead of shaving once like you'd do with a cartridge you shave once, relather, shave again, relather and then shave a third time. The idea is to slowly cut down the hair rather than taking it all off with a single shave. Multiple passes often result in a better shave but also takes much longer and wears down the blade faster. A blade that lasts for three three pass shaves, is basically nine single pass shaves or 4-5 two pass shaves. So depending on how good of a result you want, your blades may last longer. If you're fine with a single pass shave, then you can easily go a week with a single blade., which cuts down the costs considerably. END OF EDIT.

Now Here's 100 feather blades. Feathers are generally considered to be some of the best and sharpest DE blades on the market. Seeing that the price is 22,80$ we can easily count that singe blade costs 0,228$.

364 days of shaving requires you about 122 blades, which at that price comes down to 27,82$~ per year for blades. So that's 12$~ cheaper per year.

The nice thing about DE blades though, they're all interchangeable. Wanna go cheap? 200 Derby blades 18,97$. Comes to about 0,095$/blade, which brings our yearly cost to 11,6$.

However, your mileage may vary.

He is right...

razors = 11 cents

They do last anywhere between 2-5 shaves. The reason its less irritating is because you are not putting so much pressure on your face. This creates more of a "cut" rather than a "pull"

yea, the razor costs $20 bucks and maybe $10 for a brush, but after that, you can go on your merry way.

I was going down the same path of DE safety razor shaving about a year ago after a friend suggested it to me on Facebook. Here's what I found:

-First, you sub to wicked_edge, did you see this post? It helped me greatly before I began buying anything. Granted, if you're looking to buy second-hand, that link won't help you out a bunch. But I also knowing finding safety razors second-hand is not easy to come by. That post will also help you find your other tools and accessories.

-Absolutely buy online. It will always be cheaper and easier than buying locally or even finding locally (especially here in Gainesville). There are shave stores in Jacksonville, Orlando, and Tampa- but good golly miss molly are they EXPENSIVE. Amazon and buy.com have way better prices. But returning things can be tricky- keep that in mind in case you decide to go big on quality.

-Find a blade sample pack. They offer a big selection and since you're just starting out, you can find what you like. Here's a link to one.

Personally, I don't get the fuss. I've had a safety razor shave, and it was great. But I don't see myself taking good care of my shaving tools to justify investing in something like that. I spend maybe $10 a year on my disposables and apply moisturizer when I finish. Absolutely no bumps, no rash, no irritation. Takes me 2 minutes to shave and I'm out the door. I don't have to worry about losing them, clean them, take care of them, oil them, or buy a brush and lather. Just something to think about before you go investing in safety razors- especially if you're a college student.

Before the downvote boat comes my way- this is JUST my opinion. Sorry to put my pro-affordable shaving agenda.

EDIT: Fuck. OP is my roommate. I just noticed this. Disregard everything, I'll see you at 8:30, buddy.

I use Magic Shave Powder which works, for me at least, like nair, but better, and with less irritation. It's gotten rid of all the ingrowns and razor burn and the vitamin E/aloe formula doesn't irritate me at all unless I've been chafing..

If you do go with it, some advice:

  1. A whole can of the stuff will easily get all the unwanted body hair off of me, someone who's 6'1" but not super hairy above the waist.
  2. I have a 12 oz cup that I use to apply it. Dump the powder into a cup and slowly add water and mix until you reach a consistency a little thinner than pancake batter. Mixing water into the powder goes much better than mixing powder into water for stirring it up. Once you figure out the proportions for the consistency you like (around 1:1 by volume) you can put the water and powder in a lidded container and shake vigorously to make the whole thing go faster
  3. I use a 2" paintbrush to apply it. Just brush it on, doesn't need to be super thick. It takes 5-7 minutes to work well so after I apply it everywhere I use the brush to agitate it anywhere hair is real thick to make sure it gets into the nooks and crannies, I don't know if this actually does anything but it gives me something to do.
  4. Shower afterwards, not before you use it. It's not very irritating but it's a caustic product that dissolves your hair and your skin oils will protect you from it.
  5. It's water activated, so you have to make sure it doesn't dry out after you applied it. You can do this with a little misting bottle full of hot water, by continuing to run the brush over spots that are drying out, or, my favorite, just running a hot shower to keep the whole place nice and steamy. This prevents you from getting patchy hair removal from spots you didn't notice were dried out.
  6. After you've had it on for 5-7 minutes, hop in the shower and scrub yourself down. It's all drain and septic safe, and your hair will be broken down enough to easily go down any drain. Then wash, exfoliate, and moisturize

Also: It smells, the stronger the stuff you buy, the worse it smells. Don't do it right before you invite a date over.
u/zenmity · 9 pointsr/malefashionadvice

I have this one and I think it's great. It's inexpensive, does the job well, and is also very useful for trimming sideburns and the like. For stubble, just remove the attachment. If you're impatient like me, Walmart shudder sells them.

I'm just like you, and I go clean shaven with a razor about once a year. The rest of the time, I just grow out the beard weekly and then shave it down to stubble. One more tip to keep it looking good is (after trimming) to use a razor to clean up your cheeks and give your face a more groomed look.

I got my Derby blades at $17 for 100. They've since gone down.

Fuck multi-bladed razors and their overpriced disposable cartridges.

Personally, I find shaving with a regular razor to be too much of a hassle to bother with. I get bad razor burn, which padding only makes worse :(

One alternative as baby_pug mentioned is using an electric clipper with adjustable length to trim down to as short as possible. You won't be totally hairless, but it looks and feels pretty close, especially if you keep it trimmed every couple of days.

I've also had really good results with a [Philips Bodygroom] (https://www.amazon.com/Philips-Norelco-Bodygroom-attachment-BG2034/dp/B00OX58Y92/ref=sr_1_2_a_it?ie=UTF8&qid=1493634273&sr=8-2&keywords=phillips+bodygroom) trimmer - you use it in the shower, using shaving gel. It gives a really close shave, but leads to much, much less irritation than a regular razor shave for me. No idea why, but it's really good. Works everywhere over the body (it's specifically designed to work on 'sensitive' regions).

I've experimented with hair removal creams too, but have never been satisfied with the results. Either the chemicals are too harsh and irritate the skin, or they're too weak and you're left with hit-and-miss results. I wouldn't recommend, but if you do decide to go this route, then make sure you do a patch test on the inside of your elbow or somewhere else equally sensitive first, at least 24 hours before you go ahead and put the stuff on your privates!

But, hands down, the best results I've ever had with nether region hair removal has been by being professionally waxed in a salon. This might not be an option for you depending on where you are located, but most big cities will have at least one salon offering 'intimate male waxing'. It also takes ... err... balls to go and have your balls waxed, but the results are amazing, and totally worth the expense and the pain involved. If you have a good technician, then it shouldn't be too painful. Don't get me wrong, it will hurt, but the results justify the few minutes of unpleasantness. I have literally never felt so smooth in my adult life. How long it lasts will depend on your body, but for me it lasts at least two months after treatment. When the hair does re-grow, it's smooth and fine with minimal irritation.

Aftercare is really important once you get waxed, you'll need to avoid padding up, working out or having sex for a day or two whilst the skin settles down, and you'll also need a decent routine of exfoliation to make sure that the pores don't get clogged up with dead skin or oil.

If anyone is interested, I can pull together some extra tips and things to consider when looking for a waxing salon :)

Trimmed/shaved my wife's pussy for her, and she loved it. She normally uses an electric trimmer to keep things neat, but she never gets it really short and says it's because she can't see/feel well enough what she's doing.

This week I told her straight up that I wanted to use the trimmer for her. She was a little skittish about it, but I reassured her I'd be super careful, and she decided to let me give it a try.

I was ultra careful and worked hard to not tickle her (and of course also not cut her), and was able to get basically all the hair off her lips right down to the skin, almost like a real shave. I left the front landing-strip area intact, but cleaned the lips up real nice. Giving her oral this week has been wonderful (Yum!) and she's made multiple comments about how weird/fun it feels to her just walking around.

Last night she even mentioned that I "didn't quite finish the job" with the trimmer, which I think might mean that she wants me to just shave off everything and leave her completely bare. That would be a first, too.

u/MV104 · 8 pointsr/OkCupid

I think you and I have a similar appearance, though your hair is more abundant than mine. I suggest investing one of these. and keeping your beard trim and shaped with a straight razor. I use an old Wahl trimmer for the beard and giving myself a buzz cut.

Granted, I don't have women beating down the door but they don't run in terror either so take my advice for what it's worth.

Hello beard friend. I will recommend a product to you. Amazon carries a Hair Mask product. Pure Body Naturals Hair Mask https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01N5M26PI/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
Use it up to twice a week, it will soften and make your beard hair silky and so damn soft. Its the ultimate conditioner for hair.
Also, beard oil is your best friend. Use a high quality one. I recommend a simple one Leven Rose https://www.amazon.com/Leven-Rose-Fragrance-Leave-Conditioner/dp/B00IB6IAOS/ref=sr_1_1_s_it?s=beauty&ie=UTF8&qid=1497241471&sr=1-1&keywords=levenrose+beard+oil use it multiple times in a day. Your beard length 4-5 drops 2-3 times a day will keep it soft, supple and your skin under the beard quite happy. Good Luck Friend!

Thanks to this subreddit, I've found Nivea For Men Sensitive Post Shave Balm -- this is the secret to a good shave that doesn't leave stubble or shadow, because it plumps up the skin past the cut hairs. It was hard to find 3 months ago, because women made the discovery that their "makeup primer" had the same ingredients as this aftershave balm but the men's stuff was 1/3 the price. I hope this helps!

u/jking11 · 7 pointsr/wicked_edge

I also have dry sensitive skin. I use Nivea Post Shave Balm and it works wonders. I went with Nivea because it was cheap on Amazon and I had a gift card that I had to use up. Your skin will definitely thank you later for using some kind of moisturizing aftershave. Be sure to buy something without alcohol in it because that will dry out your skin even further.

u/THE_Robert_Evans · 6 pointsr/AdviceAnimals

Start with this.

It is a copy of the most mild DE razor ever invented (Gillette Tech), it is cheap yet well made, surprisingly. Practice with this and then branch out into high dollar (even then very cheap) razors. An EJ89 is a great place to start, as is a Merkur Classic (I use a Futur but they are $75 and require a bit of finesse).

Also get this

Seems expensive, but you get lots of different blades and you can try them and see which works best before you drop money. Feathers are known as sharpest, Derbys as the least. That does not mean one is better than the other--blade choice is the ultimate Your Mileage May Vary (YMMV). Try as many as you can to see what works for you.

Get a boar brush. Get this one and then branch out. Brushes are one of the coolest things about wet shaving. Once you get the hang of lather, you'll start collecting brushes. It's awesome. But that Omega is all you'll ever have to buy if you want.

Is there a Bath and Body works near you? If so, great! Proraso, one of the oldest and most respected shaving companies rebrands under CO Bigelow and it is dirt cheap. Their shampoo/body wash is great, and the shaving cream is fantastic. Very easy to lather. You can also get a tub of Taylor of Bond Street (TOBS) in any "flavor" and get great stuff. It lasts forever. I like the Avocado--it's very slick--and the Eton college--it smells amazing.

Go to your local drug store and buy Pinaud Clubman aftershave. It is cheap, and smells like an old barber shop--which is to say AMAZING. Apply this after you shave. It puts a bounce in your step like nothing else. While you are there get a styptic pencil, as you may nick yourself early on. Don't worry, nicking is painless but it can bleed a little and the styptic will halt it quick. Once you get the hang of tings you wont nick yourself at all.

And then you're set---but also FUCKED. Jade East aftershave rocks, as does Bay Rum (Pinaud or Captain's Choice), as does Old Spice...Merkur and Edwin Jagger make amazing razors, plus thrift stores and flea markets have old Gillettes...if the hobby bites you there is never enough!

Join us at /r/wicked_edge for more tips! We are a friendly bunch and can guide you through the early stages of enjoying a great hobby.

u/Papander · 6 pointsr/wicked_edge

Read this pretty long post about DE shaving. The "HERE" link inside that post has good information as well.

Some comments about the products you have chosen:

> So I've been looking into buying a DE starter kit and looked at all the suggestions and I've sorted out this much so far.
Razor: DE86bl
Blades: Sampler
Pre-Shave Soap: Glycerine
Alum: Alum
Styptic: Clubman Pinaud

The Edwin Jagger is a very good razor.

The sampler comes only with 2 blades per brand, which could be enough but in my opinion 5 blades per brand would be better. Blade samplers in amazon are somewhat expensive.

Clearly natural is a pre-shave soap which is not necessary, but some people do find them helpful. You use it to wash your face before you lather your shaving cream/soap. You are missing the shaving cream/soap from your list.

Alum again not necessary, but some users like it.

Styptic pencil, do you bleed a lot? I ask because I hardly ever bleed, my blood coagulates really fast. So I have never seen a use for a styptic pencil.

> So for brushes it sounds like boar or badger, which I believe is preferred, hair is the way to go, but then the recommendation for the $75 level is bamboo and at the $100 one of the 2 recommended is synthetic.

The Ecotools bamboo brush is a women's makeup brush. Using it for shaving seems rather extreme. However I'm not sure how its making process differs from a shaving brush, do they use different glue or what. But I have seen threads posted where people say that the brush has died on them. If you are on a very tight budget and want a very soft brush that you can also find locally, then I think the Ecotools is a good option. That being said you can get Omega boar brush for about $10 from various online stores.

> I was looking through some of the threads and somewhere I found someone recommend this set which seemed nice, has a badger brush a little cup for lathering and a thing to hang the brush on to dry and comes with little starter shaving soap (although I have no idea if the soap is any good). So thoughts on that set and any inputs on brushes would be appreciated.

I don't think that recommendation had many upvotes. The brush is a pure badger brush and it's also prone to excessive shedding. The soap is nothing special. A brush stand isn't necessary. After you are done shaving thoroughly rinse the brush with running water from the tap, shake out the excess water, and use a towel to dry the tips of the brush, leave the brush standing on its base in a open space to air dry. The apothecary mug is not necessary either. It's mainly intended to hold the soap puck. However most shaving soaps will come in their own containers. The mug can also be quite small so when you are loading your brush you end up banging your fingers against the sides. I wouldn't recommend this set.

> And then lastly, how important are aftershaves? Are they just to smell nice or does it help you skin take a breather after threateningly rubbing sharp stuff all over it? My main mental picture of aftershave never having used it before is the scene from Home Alone, so feel free to educate me.

There are many different kinds of aftershave products; alum block, afershave splash, aftershave balm, moisturizing cream, moisturizing oil like jojoba oil, unrefined shea butter, and witch hazel. You pretty much have to try which works for you, but I'd start with a cheap aftershave balm like the Nivea sensitive aftershave balm (if you get satisfactory results with it you don't have to explore the other options unless you want to).

In the Home Alone he used aftershave splash. I'm not really a fan of these, the alcohol can be too drying for your skin and they are often more heavily scented which can irritate your skin. Some users do love them though, but I'd say they are for normal to oily skin. I like to use the other type of products, such as the aftershave balm, it soothes/heals and moisturizes your skin.

u/freeboot · 6 pointsr/wicked_edge

I really enjoy the proraso pre-shave and the product lasts a long time, is easy to apply. I recall Whole Foods having a very affordable (I know, whole foods+affordable? go figure) shaving oil, but forgot the name. I think the WF was like $6.

u/przm_ · 6 pointsr/islam

Bearded 19 year old here. Size is the same as this dude's beard. Having a beard is really high maintenance (well at least for me). If I don't take care of it for a week it will get out of control (it's funny because I'm not even hairy, like I don't even have any chest hair LOL).

I use natural beard oil so that I don't have any weird hairs sticking out. This is the one I use, it's freaking amazing. I put a few drops onto my palm, rub my hands together, and rub them gently into my beard and skin underneath the beard.

I have a really small beard brush that I keep with me in my backpack at school, because when I do wudu and wet my face I need to reshape my beard so that all the hairs are flowing in the same direction. It's really small and you can grip the entire thing with your hand.

I trim my beard every other day to make sure it looks really clean and sharp. I like to be well groomed so yeah, there's that.

This is an interesting question!

On the personal front, Col. Conk's Bay Rum Shaving Soap is quite nice and has a tropical vibe. The lime scent is pretty good as well.

For room scents, we had a party this weekend and there was a ton of leftover citrus. So, I have a big bowl of unpeeled lemons and limes sitting on my table that smell great though it doesn't exactly fill the room.

Lastly, if you have ever stayed in a really fancy hotel, a lot of them have signature scents that fill the lobby. Typically they are light, refreshing, and custom made for the hotel and therefore hard to track down otherwise. I stayed in the La Meridian, Bangkok that had a wonderful smell and I fell like it would be amazing for a tiki bar.

I just learned it apparently was created to smell like old books!

OK...here we go :D

I'm going to preface what you're about to read with this caveat: My knowledge of aftershaves is somewhat limited. I've tried and used a handful myself, and know what I would recommend out of those, but I'll also recommend a few others based on what I know of their makers. I'll try to make very clear which is which.

I use Colonel Conk and like it.

u/Hybernative · 5 pointsr/wicked_edge

It sounds like you are just hitting puberty, so I would suggest something inexpensive and well-made. This little thing is great.

Go with the grain, go slowly, don't press hard and lube up well. For now, shave your sideburns at your cheekbone line, this will give your face a more manly and defined edge.

Remember, as you get hairier you will never get rid of the beard shadow completely. Don't try to.

u/capriceragtop · 5 pointsr/IWantToLearn

It's been mentioned before, but I'll reiterate, as well as upvote honeyboots' comment.

Get a shave brush. Synthetic is fine to start, but eventually, you'll want to switch to badger hair. Softer, and yields better lather.

Get a double edge safety razor. I have a Merkur. It's a longer-than-standard handle, because I have large hands. It's heavy and feels great in my hand.

I use Derby Extra blades and they're great. I just switched blades, after ~3 months use, even after shaving every other day. Even if you have to replace them, they're only 15 cents a blade.

I recommend Muhle Pinsel cream. Kinda pricey, but better for your skin than can crap and you don't have to use as much, so a tube lasts longer. I'm still on the same tube I bought in December.

Let the weight of the razor do the work. It'll take you a couple of times to get the hang of it, as well as blade angle, but once you do, it's a great shave. Only better shave is a straight razor.

Also, shave in the shower, as has been said before. Your face stays more moist, which leads to a better shave. I don't use aftershave, but if you choose to, pick one that does not contain alcohol. It dried out your skin.

EDIT: If you get a double edge safety razor, don't get the butterfly hinge type. I've heard they are not as well made. Also, when finished, take the razor apart, rinse it, and dry it. Don't forget to dry it! Drying the blade makes it last much longer.

Actually, on this sub i think you're talking about: Nivea for Men Sensitive After Shave Extra Soothing Balm, 3.3 oz https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0014E2Q8K/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_fDECxbAXFKB5Z. Nivea creams/soaps aren't talked about as much.

If you're looking for something simple, try a shave oil like Shave Secret. It's cheap, and all you have to do is rub a few drops onto your wet face and you're good to go. I use this when i shave at the gym, for instance.

Hope this helps.

u/pinkythereddog · 5 pointsr/malegrooming

Have you thought about making the switch to a safety razor? As /u/Slayman420 said, head on over to /r/wicked_edge and read a few of the threads and side bar. Best thing I've ever done to move away from cartridge razors and my skin is looking better too.

Make sure your prepping your face well by either shaving after a nice hot shower or washing your face first with your Cetaphil and hot water. If you're not into moving to a safety razor, maybe look into getting better soap using a shaving brush and a good shaving soap. Learn how to lather it well and you'll notice a huge difference with that alone.

Usually when I shave I do three passes: one with the grain, one across the grain (literally going horizontal on the face) and then if I need it, going against the grain. Don't press hard with the razor. Let it glide over your face.

Post shave, I wash my face with cold water then use a post shave balm.

Hope that helps!

u/Mighty_Panda · 5 pointsr/wicked_edge

Fair enough but I would price what amazon gives you against one of those sites. I would suggest getting an Edwin Jagger DE89, really good starter razor, or a parker though you will need someone else to tell you which one to get.

You will need a brush so look for omega brushes, these are boar brush that are cheap and once broken in can become as soft as a silvertip badger brush. As for shaving soap there is a vast array to choose from but I have been using proraso which is easy to get a nice lather from. Though if you are on a tight budget get arko, though be warned that some people hate the smell of it (it does die down after a few weeks).

As for aftershave you can pick up nivea aftershave balm from your local drugstore or supermarket. You will also need an alum block and styptic pencil, just get the cheapest ones you can find. Though you could use a healing cut gel instead of a styptic pencil, which would avoid the milky white marks the styptic pencil leaves behind.

edit: forgot to say about sample blades. Most sample blade packs on amazon are ridiculously priced so use try a blade to get a selection of sample blades. Start of with 5 different types of blades

The blades I would suggest are:

  • 1.Astra SP
  • 2.Gillette Silver Blue
  • 3.Derby, a lot of people dislike these blades but I think they offer a good starting point.
  • 4.Feather, I would leave this blade to try after you have developed your technique for a month or 2, as they are unforgiving to a beginner.
  • 5.BIC

Typically canned stuff contains a lot of artificial ingredients that most people agree takes away from a good shave. This is necessary to keep the contents under pressure and preserve it. That being said Barbasol is one of the "better" cans.

If cost is your only concern, consider picking up something like an Arko stick for a few bucks. Honestly the thing will probably last you more time than it takes you to go through 2 or three cans of Barbasol.

A good quality brush can be had for under $10 and that's a one-time investment.

u/chiseledface · 5 pointsr/wicked_edge

Basic Kit - under $50:
Razor: $10.99
Brush: $10.69
Soap - $3.59
Blade Sampler - $22.99
Nivea shave balm for sensitive skin - $5 at walmart

u/almightywhacko · 5 pointsr/wicked_edge

Weishi razors aren't all that great, and that isn't a particularly good price for one either.

Some razors on Amazon.ca you might want to look into include:

  • Edwin Jagger Kelvin
  • Parker 24C
  • Merkur Classic

If you are willing to shop from other vendors, ItalianBarber.com is a Canadian vendor and they offer some good starter kits at fair prices. The "Super Ridiculous Value Starter Kit" would be my personal pick. You get a good quality razor, brush and soap. The "Eleganza" kit is also a good choice. Both are out of stock at the moment because the brush that they come with is out of stock. It should be back in stock in a couple of weeks.

If you are willing to pay a little more money to ship up from the U.S. the "Maggard Razors Basic Traditional Shaving Starter Kit" is another amazing value. In fact, I like this kit a little more than the ItalianBarber kits because I like the Maggard soaps better (they're great!) and you can customize your razor and soap selections

Merkur safety razor and these blades (Feather is another good brand of blades, more expensive though).

Both razors and shaver are available cheaper, and I haven't had any problems at all using this razor and these blades.

u/Reverend_James · 5 pointsr/AdviceAnimals

I was about to say that. Honestly you can get better than $0.10 per blade if you know where to look. $0.075 per blade

u/luke_bennett_ · 5 pointsr/Frugal

Disposable razors are harsher on your skin, and don't give as close a shave.
It's also not expense to get started either, double edge razor blades are dirt cheap, you can buy 200 for $10.30 here so they are much cheaper than disposables once you get past the initial cost of the razor which also doesnt have to be a lot, you can buy a reasonable safety razor for $11.95.

u/Shadowhawk109 · 5 pointsr/lego

As a guy who "made the switch"; do it and thank us later. Multi-bladed cartridges are EXPENSIVE, as opposed to the blades for a safety razor.

Here's 100 blades for roughly the price of 1 cartridge.

Switching blades out more frequently will help reduce the amount of bacteria buildup from face oils and the like, which will in itself reduce acne. It'll also give you a closer shave.

Multi-bladed cartridges have HUGE amounts of tug-and-pull as the result of so many blades crossing your face; this creates GREAT amounts of irritation.

My first razor just broke after 3 years of nearly daily use, Edwin Jagger DE Safety Razor, Knurled, Short Handle, https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00K6Z24SK/

Fell on tile floor and will no longer thread. It was a nearly perfect razor for a newbie like me who was very nervous to switch to a safety razor and I've been very happy with the shaves it gave me.

Since it was my first and I'm so used to it, I'm slightly reluctant to try something new, but I at least want to consider other options if you guys have any ideas for me I'd appreciate it.

I'm as nervous to try something new as I was first switching to a safety razor since I don't want to slice myself up, ha, but if it's possible to find something different but also similar to how easy this one was to use, I'm all ears.

I can tell you how to shave for WAY less... You'll save thousands and thousands in a lifetime and Unilever I'm sure hates these.

You'll probably shave for 7 or 8 years on this. It rinses well and does not clog because you can remove the razor and wash it out. Shaves well, no nics or cuts. You can also dry the razor if you want after each wash. Each razor is good for SEVERAL shaves. I just use soap. No probs!

Now, I hope this makes this obstacle in your life better, because these changed my idea of shaving. Before I spent $ $ on razors... Not any more. :) Just read the reviews on the blades.... So many are like WHAT WAS I THINKING BUYING CARTRIDGE RAZORS???

Seems to be reviewed better as well. It also lands in the same price range as the two you posted.

u/whyNadorp · 4 pointsr/Munich

I tried waxing but it’s painful and it’s likely your skin will be irritated for a couple of days. Don’t try the Brazilian one. What I do now is shave with an electric razor to 2-3 mm and use a blade razor where I don’t want hair at all. For the back you can use a razor with a long handle, something like this, but I never tried it. For the genitals you can use some shaving cream. Maybe the cream is ok for other areas also, but it depends on how your skin reacts to it.

u/Goyu · 4 pointsr/wicked_edge

I think that you would be better off with a double edge. It's less technically demanding to learn, you don't have to maintain the blade (you'll have to sharpen a straight edge from time to time and strop it daily) because it's disposable.

My philosophy is that shaving is less about the hair and more about the skin, caring for it and leaving it comfortable/not irritated. Even with a light beard, it's worth learning how to shave well because it's good for the skin and it's a pleasant and meditative ritual. The whole process of carefully prepping the skin, applying the soap/cream and doing a multiple pass shave is satisfying. Like a very masculine manicure, manly pampering. Mampering? No...

Anyway, if you click around this sub a bit, you'll notice that it's easy to go overboard and get too into it, and shave gear isn't cheap. But that's as much a blessing as a curse. I have three straight razors and a double edge, and I fully expect them to last me decades.

If I were you, I wouldn't jump in the pool quite that deep though. Here are the suggestions I make to most shave newbies interested in checking out the wetshaving gig:

Edwin Jagger DE 89:https://www.amazon.com/Edwin-Jagger-Kelvin-Double-Safety/dp/B00K6Z24SK/ref=sr_1_4_a_it?ie=UTF8&qid=1469558129&sr=8-4&keywords=edwin+jagger+de

This is a simple, entry level razor. It comes with a few blades, but I'd recommend buying a sampler pack (and yes, I picked this pack because it has Feather blades, they are exceptional, if slightly too sharp for me. I use Sharks.):

https://www.amazon.com/FEATHER-Oclock-SILVER-Blade-Sampler/dp/B004UIZFQW/ref=sr_1_4_a_it?ie=UTF8&qid=1469558238&sr=8-4&keywords=double+edge+sampler+pack

After that you'll need a brush. I'd just check the sidebar there, I use a wee scot and I suspect that not many would push you in that direction.

Then you'll want a nick stick, because dude... you'll cut yourself. It happens. Again, sidebar. But here's the cheap one that I use (don't cut myself much anymore so I don't invest in the good stuff these days):

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0013H6AVM/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o05_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

And beyond that is the decision between soaps and cream and an aftershave. That one is up to personal preference in terms of scents and consistency.

I use this cream and like it fine: https://www.amazon.com/Taylor-Old-Bond-Street-Sandalwood/dp/B0007MW2ZW/ref=pd_cart_rp_1_4?ie=UTF8&dpID=519dkWyoBqL&dpSrc=sims&preST=_SL500_SR100%2C99_&psc=1&refRID=FTVMYYYARCCYAX4AK72N

I use this aftershave and love it to pieces, enough to spend 50 fucking dollars on it a few times a year: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0007XMDQO/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s02?ie=UTF8&psc=1

This isn't a super cheap set up (about $200) but you could get a cheaper aftershave and brush and be all set for under $100 and make improvements down the line if you decide you want to keep doing this.

u/HOGCC · 4 pointsr/AirForce

In the meantime, what type of razor/shaving cream are you using? Since you have a problem, I'd bet its a multi-blade cartridge type razor, and some kind of canned gel shaving cream.

The multi-blade razors are the equivalent of making multiple (unnecessary) passes, causing irritation, and gels are full of alcohol and other shit that dries out your skin like crazy, also causing irritation.

Switch to a safety razor, and use shaving soap. It will make a world of difference. A single shaving soap puck will last close to a year (cost is only a few bucks- I like the Van Der Hagen
sold in every BX I've ever been in and a razor handle will run you $25-$35ish try the Edwin Jagger on Amazon
Pick up a sample pack of blades, to decide what you like, and shaving irritation disappears forever.

u/noremac258 · 4 pointsr/wicked_edge

I possess extremely long, extremely thick, extremely coarse, extremely curly hair. Think somewhere between Claudio Sanchez of Coheed & Cambria and the fat guy from Lost except halfway down by back.

Every day, I shower. When I do so, I wet my hair then rub it down with a cedarwood/rosemary shampoo bar (solid-form shampoo composed mostly of saponified shea butter and jojoba oil without any natural-oil-stripping sulfates) and lather it up. I let it sit for awhile, then rinse. After that, I apply a thick coat of dandruff-defense conditioner (liquid form) and let that stand while I wash my body (with a fancy loofa and a really nice bar of cold-pressed, natural soap called "Desert Sands"). I rinse the conditioner out, wring most of the water out of my hair, and then step out of the tub.

I apply a mist of leave-in spray condtioner and let it stand while I shave (using a variety of natural shaving soaps and/or creams with a badger hair brush, a German safety razor, and a number of facial care products including an alum block, witch hazel splash, and moisturizer) and brush my teeth. I finally run a large brush (with scalp-protecting beads on the bristles and a malleable backing to allow it to shape itself to the contours of my head as I brush) through my hair until there are no more knots or tuggy spots..

On work days, I'll throw on my shirt, pull my hair back, then brush it back into a ponytail that I'll hold up with a hairtie. Otherwise I let it airdry into a gloriously fluffy, unbelievably soft, and delicious-smelling mane that encircles my entire head and neck and draws the eye of every woman I pass.

I have a NY State Waxing License & in your case, I do not recommend waxing nor threading. Coarse hair often has large follicles which when they come out will make you bleed. Not a ton, but it's just not worth it. I used to be on a forum called MakeupAlley & at one point everyone was buzzing about (I kid you not) the Magic Cooch Powder. I had to know wtf this was. I think it's the answer you need. It's a product marketed to African American men as an alternative to shaving because due to the fact that their hair can be super curly, many of them suffer horrible ingrown hairs. This powder is like Nair but gentler & meant for the face. You mix it w/ water into a paste then apply. I just looked it up: it's actually called Magic Shave Powder- https://www.amazon.com/SoftSheen-Carson-Magic-Conditioning-Shaving-Powder/dp/B0000532Q5/ref=sr_1_1?keywords=Magic+Shaving+Powder+sensitive&qid=1566696603&s=hpc&sr=1-1 It's only $1.99 on Amazon & it's literally made for faces. Back to the name I originally called it, all the women on the forum were using it for their bikini areas, thus the cooch part. It's supposed to be super gentle. Also, FYI, for your laser hair removal, if it's available where you are, check for Groupons for a year of sessions & double check the fine print for how many they say you can do. If not, 6 sessions will still leave you relatively hairless w/ occasional touch ups (I've found that it's STILL cheaper for me to pay the Groupon price for 6 sessions for 1 touch up when they send me coupons or I use Groupon select).

u/TheSavageNorwegian · 3 pointsr/AskMen

Use this stuff! Works like a charm if you can stand the smell. Also have to mix the powder into a paste, which takes forever. You like smooth? You'll be smooth! I've shaved my crotch before, and it's fine for 10 hours, then the nightmare stubble comes in. With a depilatory, you don't have any rough edges.

u/IAmGuise · 3 pointsr/funny

Mix the powder with water, apply to ass and let it sit for 5 minutes, rub the hair away. A redditor suggested it to me a while back and I have continued buying it ever since. It is great. Warning though: hair acts as a silencer for passed gas.

u/thebluestuff_ · 3 pointsr/AskWomen

I've heard great things about this hair removal powder. It's meant for black men who often have very thick and coarse hairs, and shaving can give them irritation and bumps. It was suggested somewhere on another /r/AskWomen thread as an alternative to drugstore depilatory creams that other women have been having issues with. I haven't had the chance to try it yet, but it's worth a shot!

u/cjw2211 · 3 pointsr/malefashionadvice

Yo I have the same problem. I took your image and drew a line where you should be ending your chest hair:

http://s13.postimage.org/tl4pxqic7/yeah.png

Try to keep it as natural as possible. What I do is take my trimmer:

http://www.amazon.com/Remington-MB-200-Titanium-Mustache-Trimmer/dp/B0009OMU0A/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1344939065&sr=8-1&keywords=remington+beard

This one is good because you just use a wheel to adjust the length, you don't have to attach different guides. I take that and at the very edges where my delts meet my pecs, I start at the lowest setting, do a small line with that, and then go up a setting, do a small line, etc etc until I'm at my desired length (I would recommend around a centimeter).

It gives it a very natural fade-in look. Try it!

edit: also wanted to add that the end points on the sides and bottom should just be where your pecs are meeting your torso. Definitely try to fade in as well. if you want to keep the tummy hair, I would say trim that and fade as well.

u/tgjer · 3 pointsr/OneY

If you want to try a cheaper model at first, this one looks good. + 100 blades and a brush and soap for a total of $47, with free shipping.

u/caustictwin · 3 pointsr/wicked_edge

The simple answer is, yes.

The benefits, in my opinion, are twofold. First, the amount of money you save. I was at my local retailer (walmart) and some of the replacement cartridges for the mach5 quatro xtreme^r were $28. WTF? So, last year for my birthday I went to amazon and got a Parker 71R. It came with the blades. You can continue to use your edge progel or whatever but I also got a bowl and brush and some Colonel Conk's shaving soap. It's a bit of an investment but those cartridges never seem to last. The blades can be purchased on line for as little as 25 cents a piece or cheaper depending on how many you buy at once.

The second benefit is environmental. It takes a lot of time to break down and recycle the blades and plastic. With a DE blade you are simply discarding the blade which can easily be recycled.

So, good luck. I highly recommend searching out a video or two about how exactly to shave. Though they are dubbed "safety razors" they will cut you like you owe them money.

u/xacht · 3 pointsr/wicked_edge

If I had to guess it isn't your brush so much as your soap. Williams has a reputation for being very difficult to for a good lather, especially for beginners. I would check out some other soaps. When I began I liked Col. Conks glycerine soaps. I found them easy to lather and had some nice scents. Now I mainly use Arko shaving sticks, mainly because I got a box of them for my Cake-day last year. Both soaps are very easy to get a good lather.

As far as badder brushes I have a Col. Conk that, I first want to from boar, I still use in my rotation. It is a work horse. And I have the Van der Hagen badger as well that isn't bad either. Both are between $15-$25 so if you still wanted to upgrade you're not putting much in.

edit Put in the correct "you're"

u/Chubbsie · 3 pointsr/AskReddit

Switching to a safety razor literally changed my outlook on the world in the morning. Much better shave, not a lot more time, no ingrown hairs, smells a lot nicer. Here's what I would recommend for starters:

  • Merkur razor. There are many models, so pick one you like the price/look of

  • Tweezerman brush

  • Colonel Conk shaving soap. Again, many kinds but I like this one.

  • Feather blades

You can shop around and see if anything suits you better, but I highly recommend all of these. Also, this video is a good starter if you've never used a safety razor before. I've never seriously nicked myself, but I have with a Mach 3 (which I still use to shave my head).

If you like balms and want to stay on the cheap Nivea men's sensitive post shave balm is right around the $5-6 range and performs well.

u/fenstra · 3 pointsr/wicked_edge

You're doing everything right. The razor was set up properly, you're doing multiple passes, and, perhaps most importantly, you are excited to get better. Lathers are gonna take some practice, and many people suggest doing "practice lathers" until you get it right (this will also help break in your brush if it is boar hair). Angle is very important, as it determines whether or not the blade is making the optimal amount of contact with your face. Make sure you are shaving in a quiet (if not silent) space when you are first staring, as the sound of your whiskers being sliced will alert you to the proper angle. If after a few shaves you are still having problems you should check back in with /r/wicked_edge . After shaves are a personal preference. I myself don't really use them, so I can't say much on all of the brands; however, I have tried the Nivea Sensitive Post Shave Balm and didn't feel any difference between that and a standard shave, but of course you may have different experiences. You also mentioned neck irritations. When I irritate my neck, I find that rinsing the area with cold water a few times to be the simplest means of soothing the pain and bumps. But, as you get more comfortable with the routine, you will find that the frequency with which you neck is irritated will decrease. Well, I think I got everything, if you please tell me.

u/SisterdaleTX · 3 pointsr/wicked_edge

I am definitely looking into a glycerin soap to exchange with Dial. Ascent and Himalaya with Shea Butter look promising for shave soaps. Clearly Natural Glycerine looks promising for a pre-shave soap.

Also, I found this Nivea Sensitive Post Shave Balm that has great reviews. Thank you for the suggestion!

u/designtofly · 3 pointsr/wicked_edge

I wish I had a slam dunk answer. I tried the EJ aloe vera after shave through a Maggard's sample. I thought it was decent, but I also had sticker shock. At the going price, it's the same price per ml as Penhaligons and priced roughly the same as other high end after shaves like Castle Forbes and DR Harris. To be honest, I haven't tried all of the high end aftershaves, so I can't say whether EJ is as good as the rest of them. Standing on its own, I wasn't impressed enough with EJ's aftershaves to pay the price for a full bottle.

I'm curious how this Proraso aftershave compares in performance. It also has aloe and is about half the price of EJ. Nivea aftershave balm gets lots of great reviews too. I use it all the time and can recommend it. At $7, it's a great value and available at most drug and grocery stores. It's a bit more viscous than EJ but has a good skin feel. It doesn't have much of a scent, which I prefer.

u/Slep · 3 pointsr/wicked_edge

If he doesn't already have experience with shaving with a straight edge, you should go with a double-edge/saftey razor. They require far less upkeep and are easier to learn to use. The general recommendation is something like a Merkur razor.

If you're thinking of going with a badger brush and shave cream, you'll want to get him a nice brush. That will probably be the bulk of what you spend. I personally have a Saville Row brush from QED that I love but I'm sure others can chime in with their favorites.

As for hypo-allergenic shave cream, there's always Prorasso for sensitive skin. Although I don't have exema, I have sensitive skin and my absolute favorite cream is Taylor of Old Bonds Street Avocado. Contrary to the name, it doesn't smell like avocado, but something else incredible.

Lastly, I'm a big proponent of non-alcohol Witchhazel. I have my mom and my gf addicted to this stuff. It's a natural toner and antibacterial. It works great and and doesn't smell like much of anything. It's good enough that I barely use aftershave anymore. Though Nivea sensitive balm is widely accepted as a good aftershave balm.

That's about what I've been using for the last half-decade. The very last bit is razor blades. There are a number of manufacturers from Merkur, to Derby to Feather. Best bet is to buy him a trial pack (5 blades from a number of manufacterers) from a shaving site online and let him figure out his favorite.

Morning Routine:

Take shower. Use conditioner [1] on beard as well as hair. Shampoo/condition early in shower, allow conditioner to soak in while washing body. Rinse conditioner out of hair as the LAST THING you do.

Apply day cream [2] to non-shaved areas of my face before shaving to lock in shower moisture. Use liberally, allow to soak into skin over shave.

Head straight to sink, apply MR GLO [3] to wet face by rubbing the bar on my whiskers, massage in with fingers (no washrag) for ~30 sec with hot water. Rinse 70% of it off, leaving no lather but keeping the slickness.

Normal lather/shave [4].

Rinse, pat dry, apply Witch Hazel [5] with Cotton Rounds. Let sit while I clean up the sink.

Rub in mostly dried off WH, apply Nivea Sensitive Post-Shave Balm [6].

Evening Routine:

Take shower.

While conditioning hair, use gentle exfoliant [7] on face (daily).

Leave shower, pat face dry, apply extra hydrating night cream [8] to face.

Add extra body lotion [9] to behind ears, back of neck, and other dry areas like elbows, knees, shoulders. Dry neck and behind the ears is not to be neglected.

Use Retinol anti-aging night cream [10] on areas to prevent wrinkles, such as smile lines, crow's feet, under eyes, and forehead. A little goes a long way.

Sleep, repeat.

Note: I'm only 27, but you can never start anti-aging skincare too young. I wish I would've started it sooner. If I would have started this regimen at 18, I might not have the hint of crow's feet that I do. Remember that, you young'ins. It's expensive, but your face will thank you later.

Products Used:

  1. Organix Argan Oil of Morocco shampoo/conditioner
  2. Neutrogena Deep Moisture Day Cream SPF 20
  3. MR GLO Orange Amber
  4. Stirling Coniferous (if this counts)
  5. Thayer's Unscented Witch Hazel
  6. Nivea Sensitive Post-Shave Balm
  7. Yes To Carrots Nourishing Exfoliating Cleanser
  8. Yes To Carrots Nourishing Repairing Night Cream
  9. Cetaphil Moisturizing Lotion
  10. Neutrogena Rapid Wrinkle Repair Moisturizer - Night

edit: it should be noted that I shave daily. Even sundays, haha. I avoid trouble spots ATG, where I'm prone to sensitivity, mostly the bottom half of my neck, where I only ATG one small patch by my Adam's apple. The skin is tougher there.

double edit: Don't worry about being Bateman. You almost never find someone who has a beautiful face that doesn't put in that much effort. A few of my friends (San Francisco, mind you) use concealer and a light facial powder to get rid of some shine and even out color, myself included on occasion. You can hardly tell if you use Physician's Formula mineral powder as a very light coat. Nobody will ever know, and you'll be WAY more attractive. Not kidding you, the stuff is invisible, but does its job.

I guarantee you, especially famous people wear makeup all the time so they can be photo-ready. Normal plebians like you and I are no exception.

u/bluejayguy26 · 3 pointsr/wicked_edge

I wouldn't buy a ready-to-go kit, especially from a supermarket-type store like Target. However, you can find countless combinations of razors, brushes and soaps all over the internet. My preferred razor is the Edwin Jagger DE89lbl. It is a fantastic razor with great weight distribution, blade expoture and it looks great too. I'm not sure how much you've looked into the different types of brushes but a few good brands that I like are Simpson (pretty pricy), Omega (better price for starters), and Edwin Jagger (in-between the two). For soaps I'd recommend TOBS Sandalwood. You can't go wrong with the scent of sandalwood IMO. If you want to spend less for soap than go with Arko. It's very cheap and will last quite a while because it is hard. Speaking of which, if you have hard water than don't go with the Arko and go with a softer soap/cream that comes in a tub like TOBS. You'll have a tough time trying to create a lather with a hard soap if you have hard water. That's all I've got for you, I don't use any pre-shave oils. One last thing, some antiseptic wouldn't be a bad idea. I hope this was helpful for you and good luck!

u/pcadrian · 3 pointsr/wicked_edge

That's going to be an excellent razor. If you can afford it, go for it. I got the same deal from SRD, except I bought the 6/8 instead, and 3 inch strop. The 5/8 is much better suited for beginners, as it's easier to handle, so go with that.

As a great alternative, I recommend you get a restored vintage razor from MaggardRazors.com, and buy the strop separately. I've only had great experiences with MaggardRazors.

I don't really like Col. Conk soaps as they don't go well with my water (I'm in the Chicago area). I always had a hard time shaving with my SR when I used Col Conk soap. Instead, I recommend you go with some shaving creme. Proraso sandalwood works like a dream. If you really want shaving soap, Arko is the only one that truly works with my water for SR shaving. I can use all other soaps just fine with my DE, just not with SR. I actually use Arko 70% of the time, and the remaining 30% I use some sort of shaving creme, or other new products I want to try. It's that good.

Another thing I found helps is some form of pre-shave oil or creme. I've tried regular olive oil from my kitchen, and it works great - no need to spend tons of money. The trick is to use a small amount on your wet face before you start lathering (I lather on my face); too much, and you'll start to experience drag. I'm currently using Proraso pre-shave creme which is excellent.

The alum block you're getting is also a must in my opinion (I have sensitive skin), but I would also recommend getting an actual styptic pencil on the side, because you WILL cut yourself in the beginning. The alum block isn't too effective for larger cuts.

Good luck and keep the cartridge handy for the chin area in the beginning! :)

u/naturalstrike · 3 pointsr/wicked_edge

Well if you wanna just try it for pretty cheap, there is a silver tone de razor that is less than $3 shipped, you could get an arko shave stick for about $4. And there is brushes for $8 or so. Then you could get a blade sampler pack you can design yourself ( pick which blades you want) in a pack of 5,7,10,15. Depending on how many you want and how much you want to spend. There is also proraso shaving cream, both proraso and arko are easy to lather.

Gillette Fusion:

  1. Станок Gillette Fusion - $10

  2. Сменные касеты (4штк) - $16

  3. Гель для бритья Gillette Fusion - $6

  4. Станок Merkur Classic - $32
  5. Набор лезвий Derby 100 штук - $10
  6. Помазок для бритья Basic Badger - $12

On top of what the others are saying, check out the following:

  • /r/wicked_edge -- a good sub for this stuff
  • For the actual safety razor, I have this Merkur and really like it.
  • http://tryablade.com -- buy single blades to see which suits you the best. I personally use the Astra Platinums and love them. Get two or three of the top ones. Once you find one you like, buy a box of them from Amazon for under $20.

The main things to know when using a safety razor:

  • Shave at a 20˚ angle (which you're most likely doing already)
  • Always shave with the grain (you can also shave across the grain for a super close shave, but you'll only do this if you have that thick, carpet-like facial hair)
  • Heat your face and hair, but cool the blade (hot water on the blade will soften it, use room-temp water)
  • Store the razor on its side so it doesn't rust of leave the blades wet

That's pretty much all there is to it. Using a safety razor is so much nicer than the multi-blade systems that tug and abuse your face.

Now, if you really want to go deep into low-waste shaving, you can look into a straightedge... but that's not for everyone.. and I'd definitely suggest getting into a safety razor before the straightedge.
u/kahrahtay · 3 pointsr/Frugal

Try a safety razor instead of buying cheaper ones in bulk. You can buy double edged blades for them for like $.10 and they work better once you get used to them anyway.

u/darconiandevil · 3 pointsr/india

Don't shave. Use this.

Maybe a one a bit less expensive. But you see the blades on top, that is what you want. The outer blades are rounded and prevent scratching. Also takes a bit of time but works everywhere, at any angle, for any lush forest you might have. The inner trimmer for that baby smooth feel!

>pogonotomie

Wah tu m'as appris un mot.

Je vois quelques pistes

u/Gobizku · 3 pointsr/wicked_edge

Specifically what products do you have? Cause Proraso has 3 items I'm aware of that could be used post shave.

  1. They have this, which used to be marketed as a pre and post shave cream and is available in the white line as well: http://www.amazon.com/Proraso-Pre-shave-Cream-Refresh-Ounce/dp/B0082BYLS6

  2. They have this, which is an alcohol aftershave splash, I think the only alcohol AS they have is the green: http://www.amazon.com/Proraso-Aftershave-Lotion-Refresh-100/dp/B0085UECY2

  3. They have this, which is a balm and recently was re-released in the green as well: http://www.amazon.com/Proraso-Liquid-Cream-After-Shave-3-4oz/dp/B0007XBHIE

If you have 1 and 2, I would recommend just using #1 for pre and #2 for post. I found the pre/post cream to be sticky, even in small quantities. I find the whole alum + cream + aftershave to be complete overkill for my skin in terms of post shave. I don't mean it was bad, but I got the same results without alum or cream, so they were unnecessary.

If you have 2 and 3, I would pick one or the other, not both.

I personally would check out /r/beards

I was wondering the same thing a while back when i wanted to grow mine out, mostly because im 33 and never had the chance to grow it out before, that is where i learned about bear oil, if you are persistent and use it regularly, it will actually get pretty soft. This is the stuff that i personally use, but there is a pretty big range of products with and without scents and extra vitamins to keep it healthy. If i grow mine out, i will wash my face every morning and evening with hot water, then put a couple of drops in between my fingers and thumb and stroke it into the hairs and repeat till you get all if not most of the hair. Before i started using it, i thought the oil might make my beard feel oily, but it doesn't, the hairs actually absorb it pretty well, but everybody has different genes and if it feels oily, it probably means you're using too much for your own and can probably use a dry towel to pat off any extra.

u/JDhakone · 3 pointsr/wicked_edge

This razor and this shaving gel. When you say no pressure, do you mean not to push my razor too hard against my skin and do it softer? Thanks for helping.

u/EricsOzone · 3 pointsr/wicked_edge

I'm extremely self-conscious of my facial hair; if I had to label myself, it would be as trans / genderqueer.

When I was reading earlier, I only mention it because I have a huge issue with shadowing. I missed when you said
> but in cases where I don't have time or don't want to put any on

and I'm sorry. However, I'll leave this link here just in case you haven't looked deep into color correcting, cause it def helps me.

But, in my experience (YMMV), even the closest shave will still have a slight shadow and if I'm feeling weird about it I take 5-10 minutes to cover it up.

Since you're asking for shaving tips though, here's my advice:
Start with a DE. I'd personally recommend the Edwin Jagger (it's what I have, it won't break the bank. The blades are insanely cheap. I generally go with Feathers.

If you want to make buying easy on yourself, there's a kit here I've had on my pinterest wishlist forever that looks pretty nice.

As for the act of shaving itself, you can check out this video tutorial that covers the Edwin razor that's pretty good.

You can also check out this quick shaving routine. A lot of the DE shaving comes in how many passes you do, and which direction you're shaving (with / against the grain etc.) I would highly recommend checking out the FAQ section and scrolling down to "how do I shave".

You don't want to go against the grain though every time you shave, as it'll most likely start to irritate your skin. Going against the grain as the last pass of shaving always gets the closest / least noticeable shave for me. But there is still a shadow, unfortunately. This is why I recommend color correcting under your foundation, as you shouldn't have to be putting on "half a bottle" (I know it's an exaggeration) in the first place.

u/throwaway194526 · 3 pointsr/gay

Body shave gel... swimmers use it, safe everywhere. Gilette body is good.

Usually better to use body razor/trimmer (face hair and body hair are different), but a regular one will "get the job done".

I got a personal shaver to get what was left, use with talc (optional)

Lastly, follow with Shaveworks The Cool Fix to reduce irritation/bumps

If you want your hole beight and shiny like a porn star's ass, bumper brite supposedly lightens the hole for a more even/smoothed out skin tone

Source: literally my meet-prep kit when i swam (light competitive). Minus bumper brite, im not sure about that, and idk what the long-term use side effects are, use with caution.

I also don't know if I should not order a brush and soap or just wait till I have more money to buy those things as well. (I'm a broke med school student here.)

I also thought of buying a cheaper Boar brush for 7€ and soap for 6€ but since I'm new to this DE shaving thing I do not know if that's what others would recommend.

Well seems like I talked around the heißen Brei enough.

I hope i could help you somehow. :)

Remington MB-200 Titanium Mustache and Beard Trimmer

I have a slightly older model and the battery is starting to let go, but it's the best beard and mustache trimmer that I've used. Cheap, simple, and titanium blades (that won't dull with proper care!) makes it the perfect trimmer.

u/uselessknowledge · 2 pointsr/malefashionadvice

This

Take the guard off of that and trim away. I have awful ingrown hair on my neck, so I've been using one of these for about 5 years. The beard trimmers give a shorter stubble, which is what it sounds like you are asking for, than a traditional hair clipper.

u/Billy_Brubaker · 2 pointsr/malefashionadvice

I bought this Remington a couple years ago and it's holding up like a champ. Only downside is it won't let you run it off the charger which is annoying if you forget to charge it. Charges do last a while, just got to remember to plug it in every so often. No half sizes, but I've found the 1, 2, 3 and 4 settings to be very good. I usually stay between a 2 or 3.

Whatever you do, DO NOT buy this piece of shit (Braun Cruzer). I bought it when I was on vacation because I forgot the Remington and wanted a new trimmer that would run off the charger. For whatever reason they decided they didn't need a "2" setting. 1 is too short and 3 is too long sometimes. Other than the lack of 2, it's actually a decent trimmer but as 2 is the best setting, it'd be a horrible idea to buy this thing. I use it on my pubes now.

It may seem expensive. But it is honestly a one time purchase. The razors are a quality built, they'll last you a life time. The brush will last a very long time as well.

Or this [RiMei](Look at this on eBay http://www.ebay.com/itm/271820853520) its a cheap but effective razor. If it breaks they're so cheap you can just replace it.

I also have a cheapo plastic $5 Wilkinson Sword razor that gives a shave every bit as good.

[Amazon link to $5 razor!] (http://www.amazon.com/Wilkinson-Sword-Classic-Double-Blades/dp/B0012Y1FCK)

The above one is $30 as it comes with 50 sub-standard, horrible blades. I bought mine in a high street pharmacy and threw away the supplied blades after one shave.

I'm convinced that a good shave is down to the shaving technique and the blade quality, not the razor itself.

I use Derby blades in both razors, with a double pass method and they both give flawless results.
The cheapo one gives slightly better results as it can shave closer to the septum of my nose with the lower profile. It seems the EJ always leaves annoying little tuffs that i just can't reach.

However the Edwin Jagger looks better, and feels more substantial - it also travels better in my washbag, with a blade in situ - when i flip the lower plate to protect the blade. The cheapo $5 has no such protection.

I got all this awesome stuff being shipped to me at the moment and I can't wait to use it:

Merkur 180,
Van Der Hagen Premium Shave Set - Soap, Bowl, Brush),
100 pack Derby Blades, and Styptic Pencil

Well, maybe not the alum pencil, but everything else I'm pretty amped about. I do need a brush stand though.

I figured I'd start with a decent razor and upgrade everything else as I got more familar with wet shaving.

EDIT: Too early, need coffee.

u/ClassyKarl · 2 pointsr/wicked_edge

I'm currently using Derby Extra blades.

They're above average quality and an unbeatable value, but they don't match the Feather blades that I'm used to in quality.

u/Vernana · 2 pointsr/wicked_edge

Check it out they're $8.20 here shipping included

u/viscence · 2 pointsr/AskReddit

This will probably even save you money in the long run, so go nuts:

u/friend_in_rome · 2 pointsr/malefashionadvice

FWIW, I use:

  • Merkur razor
  • Derby blades

and just regular old shaving cream from a can. Works fine. I get maybe 3 shaves per blade, but I'm doing my whole head as well as much of my face. (I keep a Gilette for when I travel because I don't trust TSA to not panic and confiscate my shit, and I get 3-4 shaves out of each Gilette blade as well.)

I think I paid $15 for a box of 100 blades, so each shave costs me about a nickel. $40 for the razor pays for itself pretty damn quick.
u/cynthiadangus · 2 pointsr/wicked_edge

They're 7.91 now! Time to stock up!

u/drexhex · 2 pointsr/AskReddit

100-pack of Derby Razor Blades for $15. That's $0.15/blade, and each blade gets 8-10 shaves (at least - that's usually when I change my blade)

u/otherwiseyep · 2 pointsr/science

No sharpening. You just unscrew the top and toss the old blade. New blades cost about 15 cents apiece.

This is the razor I use:
http://www.amazon.com/Merkur-Classic-barber-Safety-Germany/dp/B000RJUZMW/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&s=hpc&qid=1266532540&sr=1-4

These are the blades I usually get:
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0013RZ2ZM/ref=pd_lpo_k2_dp_sr_1?pf_rd_p=486539851&pf_rd_s=lpo-top-stripe-1&pf_rd_t=201&pf_rd_i=B0032QG1CA&pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_r=013J24YVPD413VK351ZW

I change the blade every third shave or so. They are so cheap that there's never any reason to shave with a dull blade.

I use Nivea Sensitive Post Shave Balm around my member. Feels and smells freaking great, and is a slight disinfectant. That'll help with irritation, and ingrown hairs. I follow up with a facial moisturizer, and I'm done. I'll do this daily, after my shower. After a couple of days, I might add gold bond, but I find it's a little too much right after a shave.

u/ImZoidberg_Homeowner · 2 pointsr/malefashionadvice

I highly recommend these Nivea after shave. They are the best moisturizer and after shave combination. They don't leave that oily feel you get from lotion. Your skin will absorb it almost instantly. The only downside is that it doesn't seem to have any spf protection.

This help me prevent pimples too so there's that. Probably because my face will get too dry.

Been using this for 4 years now.

u/Shpook · 2 pointsr/AskReddit

I'm only 29, and disgusted by the amount of replies involving electric shavers. I have an extremely sensitive neck, but never have issues with razor rash or breakouts. Here's what you need:

THIS
THIS
and THIS

Take a long hot shower, then shave. Whip up some soap and apply with the brush, going against the grain. This suspends the hair in the soap. Then shave your face once, going WITH the grain, using short, quick strokes.

Apply soap once again, making sure you use hot water to whip it up. Shave a second time, this time going AGAINST the grain.

Rinse your face with COLD water. This is important. You need the pores closed back up ASAP to prevent irritation. Then apply the aftershave balm.

Keep in mind, there's a learning curve to using safety razors. You WILL cut yourself. but once you learn, I promise you'll have no more irritation.

I live in Florida with oily, acne-prone skin. I use mostly AB, but there are some western products that I haven't been able to find better replacements for. Here's my oil-conscious morning routine:

  • Cleanse with sulfur soap. I'm currently testing this out on my acne and recently switched from Cosrx's Low PH Good Morning Gel Cleanser.

  • Tone with Cosrx Natural Bha Skin Returning A-sol.

  • Reduce excess sebum with Cosrx Bha Blackhead Power Liquid 2-3 times per week. I find that this helps keep my pores clean and reduces oil production.

  • (After waiting 20 minutes) Protect with Biore UV Aqua Rich sunscreen.

  • Moisturize and prime with Nivea Men Sensitive Skin After Shave Balm, which is seriously the best makeup primer I have ever used. Possibly also the cheapest. Feels like nothing on my face, yet allows makeup to stay on all day. Definitely one of my HGs.

  • Color correct with Missha Magic Cushion. It's lightweight, provides good coverage, stays on and doesn't get cakey.

  • And, if I know that I'm going to be outside or busy all day, I'll spray on Skindinavia's Makeup Finishing Spray, which works better than powder and doesn't dry out my skin.

Muhle makes their razors out of Zamak. I'd be hard pressed to call it BIFL.

I'm going to make a quick BIFL list with short explanations on why.

*Links are my preference.

======BASIC REQUIREMENTS======

  • Pre-Shave
    >Optional, depends on your face. Warm distilled water works for me.

  • Shaving Cream
    >Find one that suits you. Hard soap lasts longer, creams are better for hard water.

    >*Proraso
  • Razor
    > When choosing the razor, make sure it is made out of solid stainless steel. The Muhle listed (to my knowledge, is made of Zamak steel (brittle, will break if dropped several times)

    >I'd personally suggest a Vintage Gillette/ Feather/ Weber/ Pils/ Above the Tie/ iKon

    >*Weber 316L SS Razor

    >Technically speaking 303 steel is not as ideal as 316L
  • Brush
    >The brush may not last a lifetime, but is well worth getting one that you enjoy. Hair types vary and cater to different faces, note the grades of badger hair in particular.

    >There are different sizes and a deep or normal set which should also be taken into account.

    > *Wipped Dog Silvertip 22mm Regular Set

  • Bowl
    >I like a homemade bowl. If you're going to be using one every day, it's best to just get one that looks nice.

    >This is expensive, but this should give some ideas.

  • Blades
    >Each razor+blade combination is different. If you have a BIFL razor, you will probably not have to retry every blade known to man.

    >Blade Sampler

    >I love my *Silver Blues

  • Aftershave
    >Depends on your face and scent preferences.

    >I have sensitive skin and my face dries out easily so I always get *Nivea Sensitive Shave Balm

    <br />
Cartridge shaving can give fair shaves in short amounts of time.<br />
    <br />
Wet shaving takes longer, even when you get better at it. It can in fact be enjoyable.<br />
    <br />
As for technique and how to: /r/wicked_edge.<br />
    <br />
TL;DR: GET A RAZOR THAT IS **SOLID STAINLESS STEEL** NOT [ZAMAK](http://www.reddit.com/r/wicked_edge/comments/20g48v/what_if_we_want_a_more_serious_longer_lasting_de/cg32pv8).

If you like AoS pre-shave oil, but are not fond of the price, check Amazon. Cheaper there.

On the Nivea aftershave, I've used that one, but it's not the nicer one. This one is much nice IMO, and I say that having used both. That said, I'm currently using an AoS Lavender after shave and like that fairly well, can be had relatively cheap from Amazon also, but not as cheap as the nice Nivea one.

u/Dubaya · 2 pointsr/wicked_edge

well there are after shave splashes that primarily consist of alcohol and there are after shave balms that are more moisturizing and lotion like. personally i dont like the splash kind because it dries my skin out and i dont feel like putting alcohol on a freshly shaved face is the healthiest thing for your skin.

you can look for something like this at your grocery store for about $5 i think.

u/jollyswagman · 2 pointsr/pics

Try experimenting with a different technique, different soap etc. Avoid shaving over the same area multiple times. If you don't use any aftershave maybe you should investigate something like this.

u/Mesadoram · 2 pointsr/wicked_edge

I decided to go for the Nivea for Men Sensitive Formula because I am a little weary of putting alcohol on my face. It smells really nice and is not overpowering.

&gt;It's insane how much variety there is in what works and doesn't work for individuals.

So very true. I tried SO MANY different razors, "men's", "women's", safety, and they all left my neck jacked up. The 9311 is the only one I ever found that didn't. Oh and Shave Secret is the other half of my shaving method, I can't speak highly enough about that stuff too!

u/mahonster · 2 pointsr/AskReddit

Congrats on getting out of that bad foster situation man. I might have a few tips and tricks I haven't seen getting put out yet for you.

  1. I second what some people are saying, take as many showers as you want. Something I did find, however, is that if I only shampooed my hair every other day, eventually my hair wouldn't get oily. I've found that something like a Head and Shoulders shampoo/conditioner all in one cleans and keeps the white flakies off.

  2. Those razor burn bumps were the bane of my existence, 'till I discovered the old-school double bladed safety razors (like this one and learned how to use one. For the shaving cream I alternate between Shave Secret (you can find it at Wal-Mart for a couple bucks) and a Gillette sensitive skin gel. No more bumps.

  3. I am one hairy dude. I even have hair on the backs of my fingers. Mostly what I do is keep my pubes trimmed up (helps keep down body odor), and every once in a while use a trimmer with a guard to trim up my eyebrows and get rid of the uni-brow. They would look like caterpillars having sex on my face otherwise. I wouldn't recommend the eyebrow trimming unless it noticeably gets out of hand, but definitely take care of the uni-brow, if you're cursed with that. Otherwise, lots and lots of chicks dig a hairy-chested (fit) dude.

  4. T-shirts get one use from me. Button downs, one to three uses, depending on if I've sweated. Jeans... if it looks or smells dirty, wash them. Otherwise, just hang them up at the end of the day and you're good to go. If it looks dirty or smells like anything other than your deodorant/cologne, wash it. I just use liquid detergent and about 2 cups of vinegar in the wash. The vinegar actually helps get rid of odors and stains. Also, use unscented fabric softener sheets. It helps keep your clothes looking nice, and there won't be any scent to clash with whatever you're wearing.

Also, I highly recommend sticking with something like an Old Spice deodorant and no cologne, unless you can ask a girl that you trust what cologne would smell good on you. And then only use a spray or two under your shirt for the day.

Biotene mouthwash (from Wal-Mart again) dissolves the gunk that is left on your teeth after eating, makes brushing your teeth much more effective. It's a bit more expensive than Listerine, but I've only had a couple cavities in my entire life.

A good, comfortable pair of shoes will make you feel and look better. If your feet hurt, then you will hurt all over. My personal favorite for everyday wear is Macbeths (you can find them at Journeys in the mall). Good foot support, they look great, and they're (relatively) inexpensive. I was without a vehicle in California for about 6 months, wore a pair out walking everywhere in them without a single problem.

I know I'm late to the party, but I hope these help!

u/DelphFox · 2 pointsr/explainlikeimfive

There are better/thicker/thinner/etc brands out there, but simple Shave Secret has always worked for me. You can find it at wal-mart for a few bucks, and it lasts forever.

I thicken it up with a little bit of mineral oil as well, and use lotion post-shave.

u/Jameson21 · 2 pointsr/SkincareAddiction

I use one of those self cleaning Braun electric razors. I apply Shave Secret and wet shave with the electric razor.

I make sure to let it do it's full clean cycle after every shave to keep it clean.

After I shave, I apply an AHA to help exfoliate the dead skin away. I wait about 20 minutes and then lightly apply CeraVe in the tub to moisturize.

This has greatly reduced any shaving induced acne.

This is what I have, and couldn't be happier with it. Amazon has it for $32, but I don't recall paying anywhere near that for it. I think it was more like $20 when I bought it (3-4 years ago, don't recall where).

u/chchad · 2 pointsr/wicked_edge

I have the Merkur Futur and I really like it, but that smooth satin handle gets slickery when wet. If I had to buy another, I would go with something like this.

I also bought this blade sample pack. The difference in blades is huge and it's all personal preference. I would've never known which ones worked best for me without these samples.

Add a My Nik Is Sealed Styptic Pen to your order. It took me 10 shaves before I didn't have to close a wound when I was done :)

u/Schoffleine · 2 pointsr/AskMen

It's really not that hard. I didn't want to buy a Merkur because it's like $30, but then I figured that, well, the blades are only 10 cents or so, so in a few months it'll pay for the razor. Pretty glad I went with that option.

There's two large differences with a 'safety' razor (this is the one I have but I got it cheaper):

  1. I don't press as much as I did with a gillette. It's technically less room for error but after getting the hang of it, there's just no need to press against the skin as I did before.
  2. I don't have to 'pull' any more. Even with new gilette razors I'd till have to put a bit of force into the actual stroke, which would sometimes cause the hair to pull (and be painful as a result). With the type of razor that we linked above, it's a heavier razor. Mine weighs about 2.5 oz according to my scale, but you can get heavier ones. Anyhow, you let the razor and gravity do the major pulling where as you kind of lightly pull and guide the razor against the skin. That said, my first shave was horrible, because I was still pressing and pulling like with a Gilette. I then went 'surely this can't be right' and Googled a bit, then found out you're supposed to let the weight of the razor itself do the work with these. After that it was smooth sailing.

Being one of those who used to be like "no way that can be superior" I can see why people don't want to make the switch, and more so fork out the money to buy one, but it's really much cheaper. 10 blades costs $3 instead of $30, and there's a wide variety of just razor blades that you can try out. There's a subreddit you can visit for more information. I think it's /r/wicked_edge or some such.
u/JGexists · 2 pointsr/GNV

You've got to go online, there are a few specialty stores that sell them, but none in town.

Also, not need to buy an actual vintage razor unless you really want a piece of history. (Not that I blame you that is pretty cool)

Merkur still makes brand new safety razors that are built to last a century.

Can't go wrong with the classic design. I love mine

I actually have a safety razor which is so much cheaper than disposable razors. I'm not sure how you've used one blade for a whole year. I switch em out once every other week but I shave my head, A whole lot more surface area. Still though, one blade in a year?

I thought buying a 200 pack and having that last me 2-3 years was impressive.

I do dry the razor after every use (and only shave every other day) but do not have a sharpener...

Edit: I have a box of these.

u/Xelath · 2 pointsr/AdviceAnimals

Ok, so that was a bit of an embellishment (I haven't bought cartridges in about a year, and I don't know the specific prices of each brand). But still, even at that low end, $15/8 = $1.88.

Compare to this. $13/200 = $0.06.

Your cartridges cost 30x more than my blades. And I've found them to last comparable amounts of time. I could be set for a very, very long time with 200 blades.

u/engwish · 2 pointsr/videos

Look into using a safety razor. It's a little old-fashioned, but...

  • You buy a $30 razor that you never need to replace - Link
  • Blades cost about $0.17/week - Link
  • Shaving cream lasts you at least 6 months - Link
  • You need to apply using a shaving brush, but they're cheap, too - Link

All in all, you spend most of your money up front, and then you're looking at about $3.20 or less per month for an amazing shave, depending on how little cream you use.
u/demizer · 2 pointsr/funny

Time for some gospel... Reddit, please don't use these razors. Use a safety razor, soap, and a badger brush for shaving. I shave my head and face every 3+ days. I go through a small container of soap every 4 months, and I still haven't went through the $10 pack of 100 razor blades I bought almost two years ago. I also get a much closer shave and the soap is not as harsh on my skin as the gel shit. The initial investment is about $70+, but it saves a lot of time and money in the long run and you get a mans shave, close and clean with little irritation. I spent about $15 shaving in 2011. I did cut myself really bad in the first month or two of using razors, but after that I got a styptic pencil to seal up wounds instantly.

&gt; Sorry to say I would recommend against both brush and razor

That's exactly why I asked. The DE is about the same price, and that Omega brush does look nice, and $25 was actually what I was expecting to spend.

Is there anything special about baldes samplers or should I just go with this that includes 13 packs of 2 blades or should I get one with more blades per brand to give myself more time to see what I like?

u/mr1337 · 2 pointsr/Frugal

A good double-edge safety razor, blade sampler pack, shaving brush, and shaving soap can free the both of you from expensive cartridge razors and canned goo. It could take you a little bit to learn how to shave the "old fashioned" way, but as someone who recently took the plunge, it's worth it. Gives a much better shave for a fraction of the cost. (Replacement blades are usually $0.07 - $0.30 each)

If you have hard water, you may want to go with a shaving cream instead, or you could get a gallon of distilled water for $1 that will last you through about a month's worth of shaves.

Shameless plug for /r/wicked_edge. There are a lot of resources there to help you transition.

[edit] Here's a cheaper alternate razor - this is what I have. You can get them even cheaper if you want to wait a few weeks.

Bought the above groomer, then quickly realized that it isn't so much a groomer as it is a wipe your body clean of hair-er. My girlfriend said she likes it, so I guess I am now adding "body grooming" to the list of hygiene tasks.

u/wildradish · 2 pointsr/TwoXChromosomes

I use this Phillips Bikini Trimmer because I prefer trimming with the shower going. The build quality is nice, and it's also wall charged!

Initially, I bought this which failed miserably. My hair was too straight/flat for the trimmer to properly cut, and the cutting mechanism... pulls(?) the hair a bit. That was not cool. Unfortunately it wasn't exactly a product I felt comfortable returning, haha.

Well the basic model is $34 on Amazon and works just fine in my opinion

u/Thuraash · 2 pointsr/wicked_edge

A Fusion ATG everyday on a coarse beard is going to murder your face. That used to be how I shaved for a long time, and my skin hated me.

My suggestions in the immediate term is to step up your prep and shave products. That alone will make a very big, immediate difference without breaking the bank or requiring you to teach yourself how to shave with a safety razor (i.e. a double-edge razor).

My advice is to buy the following:

  • Proraso shaving cream

  • Proraso pre-shave cream

  • Omega boar-bristle brush

All-in, you're looking at about $40 in products. IMO, Nivea makes a perfectly good aftershave balm, so no need to mess with that. If you want to try a splash, you could try this, but it's not necessary.

For the prep and shave: after your shower, soak the brush in hot water for a couple of minutes. In that time, wet your face with hot water, then rub in about a dime to a quarter-sized amount of the pre-shave (however much it takes to get a thin layer of coverage without any gooping). Rinse it off with hot water. Your face should feel slicker after the pre-shave.

Remove the brush, squeeze the bristles to get the excess water out, then give it a 1/2- or 3/4-inch line of shaving cream. Go to town on your cheek with broad, swirling motions, lathering right onto your face (you can use a mug or whatnot, but your face works just as well and saves time).

If the cream feels too thick, just add a bit of water and continue lathering. It'll take some experimentation to get the amount of water right (varies based on water hardness). Too little water and it will not lubricate very well. Too much and it becomes a runny mess that doesn't lubricate at all. Add water in little bits. You'll figure it out by feel pretty quickly.

Shave WTG, hot rinse, lather, XTG, hot rinse, lather, ATG. Use as little pressure as possible and try to let the blades do the work on each pass. It should feel like the blades are just barely touching your face. Rinse cold after you're done.

That should help deal with the irritation and improve your shaves in the short term. When you're ready, feel free to move up to safety razors. Probably the best way to start is to get ahold of a basic Merkur 34C razor and this thing. Switch brands every two weeks and slowly work through until you find one you're really happy with.

    Good luck!
u/Greyzer · 2 pointsr/wicked_edge

The brush you got can be hit or miss, some people have great results with it but I've seen quite some complaints as well. This brush would be my first choice, this is a nice budget brush and the soap is identical to the (old) Proraso.

Derby blades are well liked, but blades are very individual. I'd recommend a sampler instead of just buying one brand.

1 The pre-post can be found cheaper, so can the shaving soap

2/3 This razor is a great starter razor. After you master it and still want something more aggressive you can try a slant or a Muhle R41.

u/Saug · 2 pointsr/wicked_edge

I use the Green Proraso Preshave
You work a dime size in and let it sit while your get everything else ready. It gives you a cool tingle on your skin and has a nice menthol smell. The Art of Shaving has some good preshave oils too but can be a bit pricey.

u/tkbisign · 2 pointsr/BuyItForLife

These are what she uses (read reviews, get what you like). I only use the bare minimum.

brush

shaving cream

Bowl (she waters it down and lathers it up in some random bowl). No recommendations.

Gillette shaver previously mentioned. Hers came from ebay and we paid $53 shipped 3 years ago. Just be sure to clean it and avoid the antique blades. Not worth it IMO. here is one that's being bid on. There are others out there but it shouldn't cost too much. She prefers it over mine b/c of the longer handle.

pre-shave cream. She was using this originally.

Speaking personally, when I was fat, I cared much less about my appearance in general and therefore didn't care if I looked like a grizzly bear. Perhaps I even wanted all that grossness to be covered up.

Since getting in shape, I have started shaving my back and shoulders and trimming up the entire front. I wanna see dem gainz.

On a side note check this product out for hairy back syndrome:

u/sirinah · 2 pointsr/bodybuilding

if it's just a couple, it doesn't matter. Otherwise buy a backshaver, like this https://www.amazon.com/baKblades-Mouth-Yourself-Back-Shaver/dp/B00BPBLMCS

u/Craz_Oatmeal · 2 pointsr/GaySoundsShitposts

Someone else asked the same question here (or on traa?) the other day and got a recommendation for the baKblade. I ordered one myself. My butt has never been smoother. (I'm also virtually hairless now except for my head and arms)

Exfoliate first, sanitize before and after, go slowly and carefully. You can cut yourself/get razor burn even with the guard built in. But it works very well.

I'm looking into opening the cartridge and swapping out the blades (some of the customer photos on Amazon show this) because it dulls quickly and replacements are pricey, and I have a ton of DE blades from before I grew my lazy depression denial beard.

I recently started using this beard oil. It has made my whiskers very soft...I like it.

u/lizaliza_anne · 2 pointsr/SkincareAddiction

I had a similar issue when I started dating a guy with a beard, mine was due to irritation from the rough ends of the hair rubbing my chin. He ended up buying a beard oil^(at my gentle suggestion), and when he uses that consistently I don't have as much of an issue! He bought this one, which is just a mixture of jojoba and argan oil, both ingredients that my skin doesn't mind. If your irritation continues, I would suggest giving it a try :)

Seems to be one of the cheaper and good-working oils. Just need a few drops and run it through the beard to the skin, then use a beard brush and comb it all in.

Argan oil is popular along with Jojoba. There's a few others, but those are the main two.

I cannot recommend Parkers other than the 24C and 26C. Many Parker models are inefficient, and I think the 22C may be one. I think this Edwin Jagger Kelvin would be better.

u/IntrovertIdentity · 1 pointr/shaving

Years ago (around 2005), I fell for the Gillette M3 Power razor. After my first shave, I felt so ripped off. Plus, blades were expensive.

I researched safety razors and made the switch to a Merkur razor, Derby blades, Trumper shaving soap, and a 100% badger brush. I haven’t looked back. Yes, I paid a lot for my razor (and I would go with a more traditional one today if I could redo it). I have 100 blades for $9, which will last me over 2 years. I’ve been using the same soap since 2012. And I replace the brush whenever it feels like it needs to be replaced.

It does take a little while in getting used to, but it took me only a couple of weeks to get the swing of it. And with shaving soap, it won’t lather like the stuff in an aerosol can. But you don’t need lather. All you need is enough of a film to glide the blades over the skin to trim the whiskers.

I’d also recommend a travel case for the razor. That will protect the blades in transit. And I’d get a nick stick. I’ve been wet shaving with a safety razor for nearly 15 years, and an occasional nick does happen.

u/Devalt · 1 pointr/politics

Merkur razors are great, but personally I use Derby blades which work great for me. Also any of the Kiss My Face shaving creams smell great and work well normally or with a brush/mug.

u/SageRaven · 1 pointr/Frugal

I got this sampler. Ok, so my memory was fuzzy -- it was $25 for the 100.

There are several brands (Derby being a popular one, which I enjoyed for my most recent shave) being sold for $30 for 200. 15-cents a blade!

u/MarginalProduction · 1 pointr/ottawa

Very happy, it provides a closer shave with less irritation (I was very prone to razor burn while using multiblade razors), plus the blades are far cheaper. The high end brand Imperial sells are called 'Derby,' I've bought all mine from Imperial thus far but I believe you may be able to get them cheaper buying in bulk online.

u/dizzoknows · 1 pointr/pics

Ah. Interesting. It's funny that you mention that because the following two items were already on my Amazon Wish-List: This and This

I did some research awhile back and learned that I was being totally ripped off by the razor manufacturers, especially in the realm of refills.

I wouldn't need shaving cream recipes, though, as I own a little company that makes the best shaving cream I've ever used. We use an absurd amount of aloe and shea butter in ours. We also make a shaving lotion and a shaving gel, but I prefer the cream.

u/emceelane · 1 pointr/wicked_edge

Yeah, it's the same with Shark blades, which are amazing for the price. I have very sensitive skin and at ~15¢ a blade I'm amazed at the job they do.

u/seejur · 1 pointr/news

u/Ratlettuce · 1 pointr/pics

/r/wicked_edge will help you get into wet shaving. Double edge safety razor OR straight edge. Youll save a metric shit-ton on blades.

Example razor

Example blades

Do yourself a favor and get into it. The shave is better, cheaper, more fun, and way more classy. You can get old razors too and they work with modern razor blades. I have a 1959 Gillette Fat Boy for example.

u/tasty_pathogen · 1 pointr/Frugal

This next one is more for your husband. There is no reason to spend lots of money on shaving. If your husband is currently shaving with disposable razors or with a cartridge based system then he is probably wasting money.

For shaving get a double edged safety razor. I use a Merkur Long Handled Safety Razor. The razor blades are sold separately and this is where you save a lot of money. Getting both together is a really nice Christmas present.

The Shark Super Chrome razor blades cost $0.12 per blade. I go through maximum two blades per week. So that is less than a quarter each week for a really good razor.

Be forewarned. Safety razors are not for everyone. Some people don't like shaving with them.

Now the next part. Shaving foam. Shaving foam is expensive. If you use shaving soap and a badger brush instead you will save money. It takes a bit longer time to lather up the soap but the savings are worth it.

You don't have to get the safety razor and the shaving soap at the same time. I would get the razor first and see how your husband likes it.

There is also a subreddit for old school shaving called /r/wicked_edge that is really good. People there will be happy to answer any questions you have.

u/Max_Beezly · 1 pointr/Shave_Bazaar

not to be an asshole, but the shark blades are only $12.75 for a 100 pack on amazon. http://www.amazon.com/Shark-Double-Safety-Blades-Chrome/dp/B003BWQX46

I would just buy those and then sell these off if you dont like em. It would be easier to sell them than try to trade em.

edit: nevermind, the deal congress_tart posted is a lot better than mine. In fact, I just ordered a 300 pack from them

u/kcb2 · 1 pointr/Frugal

Wet shaving is the cheapest way shave I have ever found, and the best shave I have ever gotten. I shave every other day and get a "5 o'clock shadow" around mid-afternoon the second day. This has been better for my skin too.

Depending on how fast you go through blades, it can be pretty cheap. I use these blades as they have the best quality-to-cost ratio I have found - Shark Super Chrome

Invest in a good badger hair brush - it will last you years if you take care of it. It really does make a difference and will allow you to use better, cheaper soap than any foam you can get in a can.

For soap, I am a big fan of Taylor of Old Bond Street. A $15 tub will last me 1-2 years (a little bit goes a long way!) I dab a finger in to the tub and put it in to a cup that I use to froth with my brush.

From a brief description here, it doesn't sound frugal. But I buy blades every ~18 months and soap every ~24 months... I use a Merkur DES handle I bought years ago for $30, and buy a brush every few years. I would say my annual costs are less than $20. Cheaper than any other method I have used while having better shaves and less irritation.

u/WE_GO_NORTH · 1 pointr/wicked_edge

Has anyone ever used one of those and reviewed it? I get that you don't need to spend 100 bucks on a DE razor, but 2.25 seems like it wouldn't even be a good razor.

it's about 15 bucks for a brush and soap to start out with. I haven't used it so I cannot vouch good/bad, but it's worth a try.

I prefer long handles, but there are some cheaper EJ short handles.
http://www.amazon.com/Parker-99R-Handle-HEAVYWEIGHT-Butterfly/dp/B003NTHWLU/ref=sr_1_9?ie=UTF8&amp;amp;qid=1370313036&amp;amp;sr=8-9&amp;amp;keywords=double+edge+razor

30 bucks for a razor plus a few blades.

As far as blades in the future, I got this sampler pack myself:
http://www.amazon.com/FEATHER-Oclock-BLUEBIRD-Blade-Sampler/dp/B003OL2LHC/ref=sr_1_11?ie=UTF8&amp;amp;qid=1370313141&amp;amp;sr=8-11&amp;amp;keywords=double+edge+razor+blades+sampler

But there are smaller versions (something like 10 blades). I have that one, but I would suggest going with the smaller ones. There's a 16 pack for about 12 bucks.

It isn't cheap, but in...3 months? Maybe 4? You're already less than with cartridges and canned goop.

u/pbourdyk · 1 pointr/wicked_edge

I can't seem to find the Omega brush on Amazon. How about this Badger Hair one? It's also 1/2 the price. Any reason you suggested artificial rather than real?

How's this one for a beginner? Here.

Plus, some blades.

The beard is pretty normal, regular thickness, hair tends to curl when growing longer (hence the in-growns, I presume). This looks like a natural choice.

Finally, the pre-shave soap.

Could I get a final "OK" and I'll go ahead an order. Hoping to start finally enjoying shaving rather than just existing through inevitable experience every 2 days.

u/confuzedturtle · 1 pointr/asktransgender

Personally I use:

  • Razor

  • Blade

  • Shave Soap

But wet shaving is very much a YMMV kind of thing. You may find that a different razor/blade combination works better for you. I got the cheap razor and a blade sample pack to start. The razor is cheap $$ wise but it's good quality. I've had no issues with it.

/u/LeisureGuy over in /r/wicked_edge is the ultimate shaving guru IMO. Here's his guide for a shaving kit under $50. It's a very friendly community overall, and accept women as well. Most of the guys there that have wives/girlfriends pressure them to switch because it's so much better than cartridge (and cheaper!). I've seen various posts by females saying they've been converted and absolutely love it.

Edit: I do not shave my legs yet. But when I do, I will absolutely be using my DE razor to do so.
The blade sampler pack is essential in the beginning to try various blades to see which one works best for you. They all have various levels of aggressiveness/sharpness/etc.

Also I can't speak for your technique, try /r/wicked_edge.

I thought about a sampler, and preferably, it's what I'd really want to order. Amazon is making it difficult by having only a small selection of samplers. I don't want (or have the funds) to buy a sampler more expensive than about $10.

So do you think this sampler is alright? I know there are some good brands in there like Derby, Feather, and Astra, but are the rest of those blades even worth getting this sampler for? I feel like many of those blades will really suck. On the other hand, I will be getting at least 3 good brands to try out.

They advertise them for men, and I must admit I didn't like it at first, but I've never had sensitivity issues/razor burn, or even as many ingrown hairs, since I started using an older model of this on my legs/privates. It doesn't get as close as a razor, which is annoying but probably why there doesn't seem to be that sensitivity reaction. It's also much easier, quicker, and costs less in the long run than razors.

Or at least its european version, but with the very same head. As a fairly hairy guy with a lot of curly body hair I must say that I'm not very impressed, but I haven't yet been impressed by a body trimmer. With guards it works just fine and makes my fur look way better without much effort, even though the combs scratch a little. Now I took the plunge head first but you might want to get a smaller number of blades until you know its for you. I recommend an assortment though as the type of blade make a difference, and there's no way to find out what you like but to try it (for 2 weeks at least).

Aftershave is a sort of an umbrella term that encompasses balms, slashes, creams, and ointments. Personally I feel alum and witch hazel are a big help, and are a step before aftershave. I think a general rule of thumb for aftershaves is: alcohol dries out your face, but helps to close up pores. Balms, creams and ointments moisturize and could be medicated. Get a sample of the proraso pre/post cream from gary's sample shop and try it out for yourself, it feels great, and your skin will love you for it. Many alternatives are available.

u/Tufflaw · 1 pointr/wicked_edge

Some may disagree, but I always use this preshave.

Niillä, tai sitten käyttää vaikka jotain tämmöistä ennen touhuun ryhtymistä.

u/tablloyd · 1 pointr/wicked_edge

I use proraso pre-shave cream. It has it's ups and downs. I'll list them for you:

Pros:

  • Price: $9 on Amazon here. Most oils are crazy expensive

  • Feeling: Like all proraso products, it has the menthol that will cool your skin with a nice tingly feeling. It results in a super comfortable shave and a good smell.

    Cons:
  • Not oil based: It's a water based product, which means its going to wash off a lot easier than oil will. That makes it impossible to use in the shower.

  • Only one available smell. If you don't like it, you're SOL

  • I dont think it works as well as oil. It softens hair, but not as much as it could. This probably varies per person

I am making the switch too. After reading a lot on here and talking with a buddy who uses a DE this is what I ordered (should be arriving today). Total cost was around $125. If anyone knows anything I should add let me know. (Edit formatting)

  • Merkur Razor
  • Derby Exra Super Stainless DE blades
  • Omega "Pura Setola" Brush? Googled it. Means Pure Boar.
  • Omega Crema da barba

From what I've seen while looking around here, Omega is made by Proraso which is good, Merkur razors are generally good, and as far as blades go get a sample pack (EDIT: or HERE). I have watched /u/betelgeux's guide on face mapping and what not to do with Irish Spring. I watched a Lathering tutorial by /u/cadinsor.

What I am not sure on is I don't have Alum nor a non-alcoholic aftershave, and some pre-shave stuff such as a good face wash. I have ordered from Amazon:

  • RazoRock Alum
  • Proraso Pre-Shave
  • and even a stand to keep my shiny new razor off the counter.

What are some good recommendations for face wash? As well as a decent aftershave, or is the Alum enough?

EDIT: Brush info and blades link.
u/DemonicPoots · 1 pointr/wicked_edge

On this topic, I have a 'hard' beard. My current set up is the Merkur 39C slant (with the sample blade they include) + shave brush + either a TOBS cream, New York Shaving Cream (came with my Christmas present from the wife - the Bespoke Post box), and a vegan shaving soap I got as my reddit secret santa gift.

The Merkur is by far the most aggressive razor I've used so far, and as a result, seems to be giving the best shave. However, even it fails to get everything on my face! My shaves are pretty good, and better than with cartridges, but you can still clearly see teeny tiny hair tips on my face.

My lathering is pretty damn good, most of the time, and I do two passes. I usually wash my face pre-shave with Dr. Bronner's liquid soap + a drop of either jojoba or cocoa oil. I feel like it doesn't help much, though, which is why I've ordered Proraso's Pre shave cream off of Amazon. I'm getting it tomorrow, but I'm curious. . . Is it worth it? Does it do anything? Should I try one of the soaps you've listed above instead?

FWIW, I have no razor burn at all with my shaves. I rub all over with the alum block, and it doesn't sting at all (except with the Merkur, mostly because I'm still learning how to wield it properly).

Got a baKblades Big Mouth Do-It-Yourself Back Hair Shaver from Amazon as an experiment. Surprisingly, it actually works! Super easy, painless, and only takes a minute. Don't even need shaving cream. The only question is how long do the blades last until I need to replace them.

I'm still learning as well. I bought my first beard oil at the Art of the Shave store at the mall. It worked well, but I feel that mall prices are usually higher than they need to be. I'm currently using this:

I've been using it for a couple of weeks so far and I haven't had any dander issues yet.

The important thing to remember is that you should rub the oil in to your skin beneath your beard. I do that and then add my beard Balm before brushing everything to the way I like it.

Jojoba oil is what you should use. There's a lot of other oils and things that are added to beard oil mixes, but that's the critical ingredient.

This one is my personal favourite

u/02139 · 1 pointr/BeardTalk

You should get an oil, wax, shampoo and a comb. I love the smell of this oil has a vanillay spicey smell that I love. This is a decent oil that doesn't smell like anything. If you wanna try a balm Amish Beard Balm is the one I use.

This and This are the two combs I have and use. Depending on what your mustache is might not need the smaller one. Scissors are nice to get rid of the crazy hairs.

Wax for me was the hardest to find a good one that didn't leave white stuff. Amish has one that I like and then I like This.

Any questions just ask!

u/IndustrialJones · 1 pointr/OkCupid

This is the one I'm using - http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00IB6IAOS/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o07_s01?ie=UTF8&amp;amp;psc=1

I put about 6-7 drops in my palm, run my hands through on the underside of my beard going out and another 5 drops and I work that on the outside and massage it all in thoroughly. Then I comb it out and it's not oily or anything.

The main thing I like is that there's no fragrance. I have a sensitive nose when it comes to fragrant stuff.

u/Holovoid · 1 pointr/beards

My wife just bought me this beard oil and this beard shampoo for Christmas. I technically got it on the 21st, and have used it 3 times since then. Its already had a pretty positive effect on my fledgling beard. Made it a bit more shiny and a lot softer. Smells pretty good too.

The only issue I have is if you use too much of the oil it makes your beard smell a bit like movie theater popcorn (just oily smelling) but if you don't use too much its not bad.

Edwin Jagger Kelvin Double Edged Safety Razor https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00K6Z24SK/ref=cm_sw_r_udp_awd_o17Ztb1G8YGQ3YFB

I got that for the grip since my shaving location would be in the shower. Also, I shouldn't have to worry about these babies riding correct?

u/wonkynerddude · 1 pointr/wicked_edge

The edwin jagger razor you are looking at is not the best. The handle is too slippery. This edwin jagger got a better handle https://www.amazon.com/Edwin-Jagger-Double-Safety-Knurled/dp/B00K6Z24SK/ref=sr_1_1_a_it?ie=UTF8&amp;amp;qid=1538256414&amp;amp;sr=8-1&amp;amp;keywords=Edwin+jagger+kelvin
The brush you are looking at is not the best - I recommend that you get a synthetic brush from maggard or yagi or edwin jagger or mühle.

Regarding the soap - buy some soap samples from stirling soap - or buy a whole starter kit from stirling https://www.stirlingsoap.com/collections/starter-kits

u/A_Lurker_Once_Was_I · 1 pointr/wicked_edge

Thanks. I'm looking at this one because of the textured handle and the small grip.

So between 5 and 10 different blades huh? I guess I'll look at blades that very between very and mildly sharp.

Should I expect to go as lightly as I do with the SE when I eventually switch over to DE?

u/needlzor · 1 pointr/wicked_edge

I am in the UK so the Maggard basic starter kit ends up being a bit pricey. I settled on the EJ Kelvin because I saw it recommended on another comment, was it a mistake? I was hesitating between this and the Merkur 33C so the final choice was a bit random.

u/SubGothius · 1 pointr/BuyItForLife

Sounds like the razor head you tried had too much blade exposure and/or too little blade angle. If you're willing to give it another shot, try the Edwin Jagger razor handle -- I'd suggest this one or maybe this one if you want more knurling for grip. They developed this new head design together with Mühle to be very forgiving for beginners yet still effective enough to satisfy old hands.

I use a knurled-handle Mühle variant that I love, but the head is the same regardless of which Jagger/Mühle handle style you choose. BTW, they also have an open-comb head variant that has the same blade angle but more aggressive blade exposure for dense/coarse whiskers, but sounds like you'd want to steer clear of that.

The usual safety razor advice applies: don't apply any pressure against your skin, don't grasp the handle, and don't go for long swaths; rather, hold the handle by your fingertips, let the weight of the razor head maintain light, gliding contact with your skin, and use short, overlapping passes.

u/ausommet · 1 pointr/wicked_edge

This one? https://www.edwinjagger.co.uk/edwin-jagger-de89-chrome-knurled-de-safety-razor.html

Have you tried any shaving powder (depilatories)? I just discovered them and it's been working well for me so far. I think a pro for this kind of method is that it's not supposed to cause ingrowns but I'm new to them so I'm still learning about it.

Here's what I use: Magic Shaving Powder

u/erkokite · 1 pointr/amiugly

This is for you my friend:
http://www.amazon.com/Magic-Conditioning-Shaving-Powder-Vitamin/dp/B0000532Q5
Actually you can get it at wal-mart for like next to nothing. You don't have to order it. It was formulated for black mens' beards, which tend to be very thick. It's a depilatory that will give you a nice clean shave (without a razor) and leave no razor bumps or ingrowns. Just don't leave it on too long- it's a bit caustic. I've found it works nicely.

Buy magic shave powder (cream isn't that good). Best decision I made in regards to grooming. Works great on your asshole too. Shaving and trimming never got it that smooth before. Make sure to test on a few areas. Test was fine on my forearms, tried it on my back and my skin became ashy, moisturizer fixed it up easily so no real problem.

u/DuckMagic · 1 pointr/sex

Shaving powder! I saw it in /r/skincareaddiction a few weeks back, and seeing that I always suffer from razor burns and ingrown hairs, and hair removal creams never worked, I decided to give it a go. You mix it with some water, apply to hairy skin, leave for 8 min and rub off with a damp towel, then rinse.

IT'S AMAZING. IT'S LIKE I NEVER HAD PUBES TO BEGIN WITH. It's really cheap too! And it works even better than the olive oil - witch hazel - deodorant stick method that I see here so often.

u/WalterEKurtz · 1 pointr/malefashionadvice

And you don't find it gives you sores or pimples? I've had two electrics in my time, neither have been that good, both broke. But I recall them giving me cuts and sores. Maybe it was because I didn't take good care of them, nor cleaned them... Someone posted this Remington MB-200 Titanium Mustache and Beard Trimmer which seems to fit the bill quite well for what I need...

Thanks

u/DPyro · 1 pointr/malegrooming

I got this: Remington MB-200, $15, has a rechargeable battery and variable trimming levels. It kinda sucks for an actual clean shave as its a beard trimmer, but since I'm doing the stubble thing to it works pretty well, I either use the 1 or no guard setting. The major con is that its disposable; i.e., you can't replace the parts (blade, battery, etc.) but it is $15 so hey, thems the stakes. Add a standard disposable razor to your kit for the occasional clean shave and you've got a pretty cheap facial hair grooming solution.

u/eoddc5 · 1 pointr/malegrooming

well then this will complete my arsenal of shaving/grooming products.

u/thebballkid · 1 pointr/malegrooming

The picture you have is NOT a 5 o'clock shadow. The meaning behind the phrase "5 o'clock shadow" is that you would've shaved early in the morning and by the late afternoon you have that extremely short stubble show. That's a couple days worth of stubble on Mr. Cooper there.

As for the stubble look, get a beard trimmer and use it on the 1 setting without the plastic cover for the blades. This is the one I have.

And remember - the stubble looks is great but the feel is (most of the time) passionately hated by a significant other. It feels like sandpaper on their face. Just something to think of.

u/Joey_Bellows · 1 pointr/wicked_edge

How about this it looks like there is a straight edge in there, its the closest I could find. You could always get them this razor and just glue/solder the head in so they can never put blades in them and just let them use a cheap brush and soap to "shave"?

u/bored_engineer · 1 pointr/wicked_edge

Will do. I am starting to have second thoughts on calling it a "good soap" since I got it off amazon. It's this so I feel it will better then my current puck. If it doesn't work out I will probably try a cream or one of your suggestions.

u/odd_affiliate_link · 1 pointr/AskReddit

This isn't exactly what you're asking for, but it might help. Since I started using a different razor/shaving cream, razor burn is history and my complexion has gotten better.

Get yourself a nice double edged safety razor. I have a Merkur Futur. It isn't cheap, but It'll last a lifetime and blades are cheap as dirt. There are less expensive razors in the ~$30 range. It is easy to justify the cost when you realize you won't be paying much at all for the razors.

Get a brush (to apply shaving cream) - badger hair is the best. I have this: Omega Stripey Badger Hair Brush

Get a quality shaving soap. I used to use just these two: Proraso Eucalyptus and Colonel Conk's Bay Rum. Now, I'm favoring the Sensitive Skin Cream which may be more up your alley too. The proraso creams don't require a shaving bowl to store them in, but the Col. Conk does.

The other bonus is that using such a sharp blade (they are cheap enough to replace every 2-3 shaves w/o guilt) it also serves as a great exfoliant. My face feels awesome after I shave.

u/sebastiancounts · 1 pointr/wicked_edge

I was not satisfied with my last response, i am now using this the stuff, it is damn awesome. The balance of the scent is perfect, its sticks with you all day, but is subtle enough to not make to much of an impression.

u/ferrarisnowday · 1 pointr/wicked_edge

Here's a cheap plastic one that could work.

u/Sethrea · 1 pointr/SkincareAddiction

I still use a basic "starter" Wilkinson model I got recommended for its "soft" shave and personally, I never had such smooth and close shave as with disposable razors (https://www.amazon.com/Wilkinson-Sword-Classic-Razor-Blades/dp/B0012Y1FCK). Another awesome benefit of these is that you can get the hair unstuck super easy, not something you can do with a disposable...

The "secrets" are:

  • proper shaving cream, always, no exception (I use The Body Shop)
  • changing blade on time
  • finding the right angle
  • not applying too much pressure; basically no pressure at all if I can help it, just keeping the blade against the skin

If you have to go through the same portion of skin multiple times and you do it with a multi blade razor, I think this might be one of the reasons for your ingrown hairs.... And maybe what you shave off is not hair, but rather bumps of dead skin? If you get your skin and hair to normal, shaving should also get easier.
u/Stinzent · 1 pointr/artofmanliness

Dirt cheap, pretty much all you'll ever need in terms of razors and blades. I got myself a nicer, full metal razor at some point, mostly for the looks, but this one is surprisingly sufficient. Used it for years. Toss the Wilkinson blades though, they're bad. (I know it's in German, bear with me. The brands are international I think, so you should get those anywhere)

Here's a link to the blades I bought: not too sure on the quality, but they were cheap and had pretty good reviews

u/apairofdocs · 1 pointr/wicked_edge

Thanks for the head's up. That does look like a great travel razor. Out of curiosity how sharp would you rate Derby Extra blades in regard to sharpness? In my experience I put them in the middle of the pack. Have you tried them with this razor?

u/travistravels247 · 1 pointr/MtF

I found laser did help, hormones should help more. I suggest a fascial brush to gently exfoliate before shaving. Don't over shave, if not everything is done in the first pass, use an electric shaver later. Also, this aftershave works well and doesn't smell strong or musky.

u/LivPlusPlus · 1 pointr/transpassing

Depends! Since your foundation sits kind of heavy and dry, I'd say go with a water-based primer to try and get a bit of hydration. On the cheap side, tons of girls over at /r/makeupaddiction really dig Nivea for Men After-Shave Balm. It happens to work really well as a primer, if you don't mind smelling like dude for a little while. Pricier options include Smashbox Photo Finish Hydrating Primer. Those are usually my go-tos when my skin is dry, otherwise I use Benefit Porefessional.

&amp;nbsp;

On a related note, are you using a moisturizer before applying foundation? You absolutely should be if you're not already. Just give it 5-10m to sink in before starting makeup. Skincare in general (see: /r/skincareaddiction) can go a long way towards making your makeup look great.

&amp;nbsp;

Last tip would be to try blending your foundation out with a slightly damp sponge (Beauty Blender, RT Sponge, etc) instead of a brush. Can help give your foundation a more 'dewy' look.

u/BogieLowenstien · 1 pointr/AskMen

Pulled this from my own Instagram because I couldn't find the original on my phone, so sorry for the b&amp;w filter, but this is what I'm currently rocking, except for the blade.

The razor is a Gillette Fat Boy adjustable double edge razor that I cleaned up (they only made them from like 1958-61 or something like that, so usually if you find one they're not in the best condition).

Instead of the Astra blade I've moved on to these which work better for my skin.

Soap, pre-shave oil and aftershave are all from Grimm Blades, the "Smolder" collection.

Honestly, the oils are shit as far as function. The soap works pretty well, but I have super sensitive skin, and the oils just weren't cutting it for me, but I'll be damned if they aren't the best smelling things I've ever used in my life. The pre-shave oil wasn't entirely terrible, so I'd use that, but the aftershave never helped, so I started using Nivea sensitive aftershave balm on my actual neck, and just applying the Grimm Blades aftershave to the back of my neck and behind my ear. Since the Nivea is near-scentless, it works out pretty well. Like, seriously, the Smolder set is my favorite smell of all time.

I have no clue what brand the brush is since it was a gift, but it's badger hair and works really well.

I stole the mug from my wife.

Edit: typos

u/thisone4mysexuality · 1 pointr/MtF

I actually found it in the store today. Smelling it, though, I found it a little strong. I'm sensitive to some fragrances and I can only know for sure after having it on for a while.

When it dries, there is no scent? Maybe I should have applied some to my skin while I had it open to make sure, especially if it's so effective! It sounds like just what I was looking for :)

Thanks!

u/Ao_of_the_Opals · 1 pointr/AskWomen

I shave my legs, armpits, and lady parts daily and almost never get razor burn or ingrown hairs anymore. I used to only shave once every few days because my skin would get so irritated, but I've found that with this process I'm able to shave daily with no issues:

  1. Trim long hair first
    • Like others have said, if it's been a while since you shaved the area it's a lot easier if you trim the hair down prior to shaving. If you don't have a trimmer using scissors is fine.

  2. Exfoliate
  3. Use good razor blades
    • This is the most important thing. Don't use crappy disposable blades; even a lot of the "better" drugstore brands would still give me bumps and ingrown hairs (like Mach 3 Turbo and equivalents). I currently use the Dorco Shai 6 Smooth Touch blades though I bought one of the Pace 6 Plus handles because the men's razor handles are much sturdier (the Shai handles are entirely plastic and break easily if dropped, and the men's are mostly metal and a lot more sturdy).
  4. Use a good shaving cream
    • Ditch the aerosol foam stuff, it's not helping you much at all. Conditioner is better than those shaving foams. There's a lot of different options, but I've found that for my skin the best are the thicker creams that contain some kind of shea or coconut butter. I really like Lush's Dirty shaving cream, but it's rather expensive so I've switched to the Van Der Hagen Shave Butter that's like 1/4 of the price and works just as well.
  5. Switch out blades often
    • I switch out my razor cartridges every 3 days, which seems to be the limit before they get dull enough to start irritating my skin and giving a worse shave. Don't bother with places like Dollar Shave Club -- they literally just buy Dorco blades, re-brand them, then mark them up. Just find an online retailer and buy direct from them.
    • Also, if you do go with Dorco, there's absolutely no reason whatsoever to pay full price. They have some kind of sale every 2-3 weeks so I always wait until they're having some kind of 20% off or buy-one-get-one promotion before buying more.
  6. Moisturize
u/glatts · 1 pointr/malegrooming

So about a year or two ago I began experiencing similar problems. One day it was so bad that on a whim in a drug store I purchased a little blue tub of Nivea Creme. It was cheap, but I figured I'd give it a try as I've liked some of their other products, especially their post shave balm which helped with razor burn and bumps.

Now I had never used moisturizers or anything on my face before. I would just wash it with a face wash when I showered and went to bed. But a friend of mine was working at Vogue or GQ and got my gf a couple of free samples of this stuff called Crème de la Mer. She absolutely swore by and I could definitely see the improvement in her skin. But as you can see here, at nearly $200 per ounce it's not cheap. But I got curious as to what made it so effective beyond hte marketing hype.

This led me to looking into the ingredients, and what do you know? That tub of Nivea Creme I bought almost has the matches. In fact, numerous other people have written about them and most say their performance is essentially the same. So unless your name is Daddy Warbucks and you don't mind spending 40 times the amount for what is at best a negligible difference, go with the Nivea Creme.

I recommend using it after you wash in the evening, and just leave it on nice and thick overnight. Then in the morning, rub some on your face before after washing again, but really rub it in this time. Within about 24-48 hours you will be as good as new, if not better.

u/redtidepods · 1 pointr/oddlysatisfying

tip: if you don't like the shine on top, you can use women's "makeup primer" to hide the shine. It's basically an invisible lotion with ingredients that mattify (un-shine) the skin and control oil.

A lot of men's skincare lines are selling primer as "shave balm" and other skincare products to control shine.

u/whitefalcon684 · 1 pointr/bald

Honestly, I always had issues with my scalp being dry and itchy...until I completely shaved my head. Not sure what was causing it but it went away instantly with all of my hair being gone.. Not sure how much hair is left with a zero, but I'd try shaving it and see what happens. I do use this Nivea aftershave

u/Hectoronthemoon · 1 pointr/wicked_edge

To prevent irritation you probably will want to have an alum block/stick and some Nivea for Men Sensitive After Shave Extra Soothing Balm. Make sure you have good prep also by making sure your beard is well hydrated. You might want to try a pre-shave oil to provide some extra protection.

u/FacelessBureaucrat · 1 pointr/malegrooming

No, I just splash cold water after and then I shower. A little of this stuff after. But YMMV, of course.

u/beelzebobcat · 1 pointr/Rateme

Definitely much better than before! You don't look as messy right now. Make sure to use enough styling product in your hair - not so that you can get rid of the curls, but so you can reduce the frizz and make the curls that you still have more defined.

The cut you had here is really cute as well, so you can still have longer curls if you want, as long as you make sure the cut is still short on the sides and your curls are well-defined (which I know takes work). Do not brush or comb your hair when it's dry (whatever cut you have), unless you're about to wash it. Curly hair frizzes like crazy if you do that. Use gel in wet hair to get nicely defined curls, and re-wet your hair every morning to style it. If you need hair help in future, /r/curlyhair is where you need to go.

I really like the clean-shaven look, it suits you well! It looks like you're getting some razor burn / irritation though, so I'd look into that. Make sure to shave with a sharp blade, use enough shaving cream (or substitute) so the razor glides over your skin easily, and use an after-shave balm without alcohol, like this one.

u/Destinyx3 · 1 pointr/AsianBeauty

I go back and forth between using a primer and not, but I always use setting powder.

For reference, my skin type is Dehydrated/Combo leaning a little more towards oily. I use Skin79 Green BB Creme, Nivea After Shave Balm For Men (Non-AB) as a Primer, and Coty Air Spun Original (Non-AB) as a setting powder.

I have a desk job where I don't do much and generally wear lighter makeup, so usually I'll skip my primer. However, if I'm going out or planning to wear heavy makeup, I always do a primer, setting spray, and setting spray (just in case because of how oily my skin can get).

I'm planning on ditching my primer eventually and looking into Innisfree No Sebum Powder as my setting powder because of how highly recommended it is for oily people! I'll be eyeing this thread for primer recommendations :)

I suggest at least getting a setting powder and seeing if that does the trick. If not, try finding a primer that works for your skin and see if that help. If that doesn't work, add a setting spray and hopefully that should do the trick!

I have used this for a while
It's a little greasy perhaps and you don't want too much or it'll never rub in nicely but used in small amounts it does a good job and definitely leaves my skin feeling much nicer post shave than if I use nothing.
I've just made the move to a DE &amp; as part of that I have ordered a new Edwin Jagger aftershave balm I'll report back once I've had a week to test it out.

It is a rather mild after-shave that won't make a statement and is only there to help soothe and moisturize the skin.

Looking at that styptic pencil, you are paying for the packaging, as most pencils I've seen are just like loose candles.

u/RexBearcock · 1 pointr/wicked_edge

I went with This Stand It's a little pricy, but it looks nice, and it works well, I had to cut little gasket type pieces of cardboard and put them in the base only to apply a little pressure, so the padded non slip base part stuck below the rest of the base, but it I'm happy with it. No experience parkers, but that's the same brush I used and it's quite a bargain.

u/montanasucks · 1 pointr/wicked_edge

The razor is a Lord L6 and the stand is a Colonel Ichabod Conk.

The brush and mug were purchased from the local Farmer's Market from a nice lady who makes homemade soaps. The soap is a disc in the mug and it is amazing. It is Bay Rum scent made with all sorts of oils and since I started using it over shave gel to shave with I have no razor burn or irritation. I am excited to do my first wet shave tomorrow!

I hate shaving, but I generally look best clean-shaven. Here’s my 2 tips to make the process as easy as possible.

  1. Shave in the shower. There’s no cleanup, and it makes for less razor burn.

  2. Use this stuff. They say you can use it in place of shave cream, but don’t do that. Use it underneath shave cream. You only need 2-3 drops to cover an entire face so it lasts a while. It keeps your face lubed up during the shave making for less nicking. I go over my whole face once, and then if there are any spots that don’t look right, I can just fix them real quick without needing to reapply cream.

I use a safety razor with regular razor blades. I bought 200 years ago and I still have plenty. Sometimes when I’m feeling kingly I use the disposable BIC two blade razors (without the lube strip). Those are a much easier to use, and while cheap, are still more expensive than a safety razor.

Arko. It's extremely effective, makes a great lather, tolerates bad technique, and smells great (like an old fashioned plain soap, though some people hate the smell and liken it to artificial lemon scent, a scent that I am unable to pick up in it). It comes as a stick and I prefer face-loading it and face-lathering, but since you mentioned that you use a scuttle, it's easily mashed into a mug or bowl (no need to grate it or anything, just give it a good shove with your hand).

Thanks for the advice! I was looking at samplers, but the price of those Personas are appealing, so I had to ask.

This is what I was looking at for a kit:

  • Razor
  • Brush
  • Shaving soap
  • Blade Sampler
  • Nick Relief

I know this stuff probably isn't the best (I was only looking at the under $50 section for this stuff), but I wanted to try things out before I spent more money. Are there any big issues with this potential kit?

As for the aftershave, do I have to use it, or can it just be a lotion, like Aveeno? It's what I currently apply after shaving right now.

Also, I noticed some people get bowls and stands. Are they necessary? Can I just use a small glass that I wash now and then instead?
u/simonmitchell13 · 1 pointr/AskReddit

This is the one I started using about 3 years ago. My issue was that the blades in the "modern" razors cost so much, so I was waiting far too long to change them.

I went all the way and got a bristle brush and shaving soap while I was at it, I have not once regretted this change.

I have to disagree with most people here. This is the way to go. I've saved at least 6k on haircuts since I started using this model.

Yes it's "cheap." Yes, it's cordless.

The model hasn't really changed in years and all they do is improve the battery. I owned 1 for over 10 years and gave it it to a relative, happy to get a lighter, faster charging, longer lasting clone. As a built-in adjustable it actually has a wide enough cutting face for haircuts where most others are narrow and more geared toward beards.

Heavy build, power cords, and length guides you have to constantly change on Wahl isn't the way to go when you're giving yourself haircuts and/or want to quickly tune the beard in the morning.
