>Salt used in processed foods is not iodized. Given that people are cooking less at home and buying either restaurant or processed foods, iodine intakes in the U.S. have declined from about 250 μg/day to 157 micrograms/day. Public health authorities recommend 150 μg or more and the need is particularly acute for expectant mothers. Daily Iodine intakes of 1,000 – 1,100 μg are safe for adults and children over 4 years of age. - http://www.saltinstitute.org/news-articles/iodized-salt/

OP, I don't use iodized salt. I prefer sea salt (non-iodized) for taste and try not to use much of that, either. There are some seaweeds that are high in iodine and you can snack on them. Be sure to investigate amounts, though. Some are actually too high for regular consumption. Personally, I don't like the "seafood" taste, so I buy this stuff: http://www.amazon.com/Maine-Coast-Sea-Vegetables-Alternative/dp/B0007SMLUM/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1396538353&sr=8-1&keywords=kelp+flakes It's kelp, but I find that if I don't use much and use it in meals that have other strong flavors that the flavor doesn't bother me and I can get more than enough iodine easily.

And good for you for asking about iodine! I was low thyroid for a while, even put on meds. My doc never even bothered to ask where I was getting my iodine from. I learned more about nutrition, added the kelp and improved my diet in other ways and I no longer have thyroid problems! And the kelp flakes are much cheaper than thyroid meds :D

Here you go. Learnt about this in a previous thread: most theaters use a flavoring called Flavacol, which you can buy online to use at home

I actually agree. Eggs were hard for me and I still miss them. Then I think about the video I watched of the male chicks getting ground up alive and that nips my cravings in the bud. That being said- They were my favorite and I’m still hunting for a replacement.

I’ve heard of the Just Egg- which looks amazing but really pricey to include in my regular diet.

I just got some kala namak black salt. When added to a tofu scramble it’s supposed to make it taste more like eggs. I haven’t tried it yet but it really smells like eggs! I’m excited to try. I’ll update here when I do.

I like you guys a lot and I'm having a good friday...
SO I decided to share my super secret Popcorn recipe with you all, with the only stipulation is to not share this and pretend you made it, otherwise I will find you and remove a kidney while you sleep.... uh ANYWAYS

INGREDIENTS

A Air Popcorn Maker (You could use a Oil Popper if you prefer, but whenever I use one, the Popcorn always comes out Burnt and Oily and crap; Do not use microwave bags, they will taste like Salty Hell)

Popcorn Kernals (Duh)

Salted Butter (If your in a pinch, Margarine will be suffice, but regular butter will undeniably taste better)

Hot Sauce (This is your preference, I personally recommend Cholula or Green Tabasco)

Janes Mixed up Salt (This is the only ingredient that is specific, you will find it in the spices & seasoning aisle at your local supermarket I don't recommend Popcorn salt as it's usually too salty, this salt is not as salty salt as salt salt.... Ill move on now)

A Bowl (to smoke that dank canadian weed bruh)

PREPARATION & COOKING (It's just Popcorn, IDK does it count as cooking?)

First, pour the desired amount of Popcorn into the Popper, FYI 1/2 a cup makes a large bowl so dont go crazy.
If your popcorn maker doesn't have a butter dish, you can start making your popcorn now, but if it does, add Butter(Duh) to the dish (or a Microwavable safe mug if the maker doesn't have a dish) and top it with your hot sauce (IMO drizzle it on, not too crazy, but not too lite either, a Teaspoon or 2 if you want measurement) and add a dash of the Mixed up salt, and then microwave until melted

Once the Popcorn is done, pour the butter on the popcorn and add more Mixed Up Salt to your tastes, and give the bowl a good ol' shake so your popcorn is all mixed up.. And your done!

u/Zombie_Lover · 7 pointsr/Cooking

I bought this alderwood smoked salt and this Hawaiian lava salt and they are great. The lava salt isn't really any better flavor wise than a regular sea salt, but it looks great on a steak. The smoked salt is my favorite by far.

u/typhoonicus · 6 pointsr/vegan

I keep getting closer to what I remember in my pre-vegan days. This one was particularly delicious. Here's what I did:

Pressed firm tofu, rubbed with Indian black salt (this is where the "egg" taste comes from) and fried in a little oil. Covered with a slice of Violife mature cheddar after crisping up one side and turning. Then a little pepper.

Gardein breakfast sausage patty, also fried in a bit of oil.

Sauteed adult spinach in olive oil with salt, pepper and some garlic.

Toasted English muffin (not Thomas', which uses milk. This one is Giant store brand). Spread with a little Earth Balance after toasting.

That's it, all of it was from local stores except the black salt, which I got from Amazon. This is my favorite lazy morning breakfast.

Sub upgrade would be nice. That seems like a good place to crank it up if you want a lot of bass.

Those Polk's are fine. The T15's are still popular. I wouldn't upgrade them just for the hell of it. If you go demo some speakers and find something you like a lot more then go from there. Placement isn't great, the T50 towers would give you better placement and are part of the same series at the T15's.

As for the absolute best bang for the buck upgrade for your home theater experience, I know exactly what it is. It's very rarely brought up in this subreddit but there it is:

https://www.amazon.com/Gold-Medal-Products-Flavacol-Seasoning/dp/B007HN5KNA/ref=sr_1_4?keywords=popcorn+flavacol&qid=1563901584&s=gateway&sr=8-4

Affordable, and will definitely improve your movie watching experience. Just be careful with the new couch and everything.

u/Doodles4me · 5 pointsr/keto

You don't mention how long you've been keto. Getting into ketosis only takes a few days, but getting fully fat-adapted can take weeks/months. Until you are fully fat-adapted it's normal to have irregular bowel issues one way (constipation) or the other (diarrhea/urgency). I would say it took me probably two months for things to settle down into regularity. Some advice: water, water, water. Guard your electrolyte intake religiously as well. I put sodium, potassium, and magnesium citrate powder in my 80oz water jug every day. I also take a magnesium citrate capsulesupplement before bed. As for probiotics - I have tried all different kinds of probiotics, but I finally came to the conclusion that a capful of apple cider vinegar in my water jug everyday does the trick minus the rumblies in the tumbly the commercial probiotics gave me. Use the vinegar with the "mother" in it - like this

We served with multiple types of salts. Usually 1 sea salt, 1 slight smoked salt, and one very smoked salt like this one.

The last one is a favorite of mine as it goes great with grilled red meats and all of our steaks were grilled. You dont really cook with it however and its mostly a salt you add just after you finish.

Hey, if you're craving the egg taste, get some black salt aka kala namak! Look in the spice section of an international grocery store near you if you have one. Otherwise, you can order it online (like this or this). It imparts an eggy taste. It's popularly used in tofu scrambles and you can add it to deviled potatoes, too.

  • The salt I used was Spice Labs coarse dark pink Himalayan crystal salt (not sea salt -- I'm just so used to sea and salt going together).
  • In the first photo, you can see that I removed the plastic handle from a crappy oil splatter cover from WinCo. I don't really recommend it. The other oil splatter cover that you see in the second photo is a nice one from Ikea that has a foldable handle, which makes it great for compact storage.
  • I smoked both batches for ~9 hours in my 18.5" WSM at around 100-150' using the snake method and chunks of applewood. All my vents were almost closed.
  • I added aluminum foil to the grates around the oil splatter covers to force more of the smoke through the salt.

Pardon the strange-looking photos. I was trying out a new camera app and it left weird artifacts all around the photos.

Anyone know if there is a cheap place to buy kosher salt? It costs about 1100 yen on the Japan Amazon store, as compared to $2.50 USD in the US.

Edit: Just want to clarify that I don't care if the salt has iodine, it's the coarseness that I'm concerned about.

I adapted this healthy chocolate mousse recipe to my taste:

0.50 tsp Pure Vanilla Extract

.5 teaspoon Salt

2 containers Mori-Nu oraganic firm tofu

40 grams Granulated sugar

40 g Valrhona Cocoa Powder

4 oz water

Put everything in a food processor or blender and blend until smooth.

recipe makes 5 servings: 146 calories; 12g protein

I will add hemp seeds, if I want to make it a breakfast meal to increase the protein content and calories. IMO, the Valrhona cocoa powder is a must when you are looking for that deep chocolate flavor; I even add it to my chocolate protein shakes.

I also like making a dip out of greek yogurt and Jane's crazy mixed-up salt. Easy and goes well with veggies.

It’s black salt, not pepper. Here’s an example:

That’s what gives the subtle sulfuric flavor. For a whole block of tofu, I use maybe 1/4-1/2 teaspoon.

Fisherman's Wharf, because it is basically lemon pepper with some extra goodies. Works great on grilled/pan fried tofu, fish, chicken or veg. Can work on beef or pork as a finishing seasoning.

I'm going to give you some high protein, no oil, no soy recipes but you'll need to adjust them for no salt, no onion. (Is a salt substitute possible? (haven't used this myself, just has good reviews) Do dried or very well cooked onions work for her, or onion powder, or shallots or leeks?)

These may be highly spiced, but don't need to be spicy-hot at all. They call for onion, just leave it out, or use a bit of onion powder if that works. If you leave out all the salt, I'd increase the other spices and vinegar.

Cumin Infused Veggies and Chickpeas over Quinoa

What's your DRA? 1500mg? Whenever I do a low sodium diet, I shoot for roughly 1500mg.

For this type of dietary restriction, I normally stuck to foods that don't need a lot of salt, like veggies, lean meats, and fruit. You'd be surprised how much salt is in bread, crackers, pastries and other baked goods. Pastas and rice also tend to need more salt to add flavor, so I avoid those too, however, rice is more forgiving with how many spices you can add to it.

How do you feel about potassium-free salts and low sodium salt substitutes? There's a pretty good half & half on amazon that has good reviews: https://www.amazon.com/Nu-Salt-Substitute-Shaker-3-Ounce/dp/B004EPBMRC/ref=sr_1_12_a_it?ie=UTF8&qid=1511449360&sr=8-12&keywords=salt+substitute

You know with just an ounce or two of 91% alcohol and salt (I like coarse kosher salt) plus ~10 seconds of shaking and it is all done. I plug up the down stem hole with TP, and when I'm done, I use the left over alcohol with a paper towel to clean up the resin that gets in the sink from cleaning the bowl. I use a nylon pipe brush for the down stem, just drop the down stem in the bottle of alcohol and go to town with the brush. Entire process takes no more then 3-5 minutes.

u/Pyowin · 2 pointsr/LifeProTips

This is somewhat of a misconception. Freezing temperature depression is dependent on the salt concentration (each mole of NaCl/liter of water is about 3.4°C). For a fairly small sized cooler, like this one, you would need about 240-250 grams of salt (NaCl) to lower the freezing point by 1° C. That's about half a lb. For reference, the standard container of salt that you get from the supermarket is about 1 lb. In order to significantly lower the freezing temperature of that much water, you need a ridiculously large amount of salt.

The salt is totally superfluous. The ice water bath is simply there for surface area contact and for a homogenization of the cold reservoir around the bottle/can.

You can try Keto-ade. I make it with ice, water, bottled lemon juice drops, a decent dash of "lite salt", and you can always add some stevia drops but I don't. Also, some people use those Mio drops as well.

It's really great! You just have to not overdo it.

u/johnnypebs · 2 pointsr/EatCheapAndHealthy

I found this shake-on white cheddar seasoning in the grocery store that's pretty good and doesn't take much to add flavor; I use it in combination with Badia ground jalapeno. Jalapeno-cheddar popcorn is the shit. Badia also has Louisiana Cajun Seasoning that goes good on popcorn.

u/IlikeBeer1001 · 2 pointsr/intermittentfasting

mortens lite salt... you can make your own gatorade with crystal lite packets. it is perfect because you are deficient for potassium on keto and you are not going to find an effective potassium supplement as it can kill you if abused so they ban it out right but allow it for low sodium diets aka lite salt.... also has calcium, sodium and magnesium, good balance 1/4 teaspoon once or twice a day depending on exercise should do you <fine>(https://www.amazon.com/Morton-Salt-Lite-Less-Sodium/dp/B071VRKP4C/ref=sr_1_2_a_it?ie=UTF8&qid=1549423092&sr=8-2&keywords=morton+lite+salt)

u/hermeslyre · 2 pointsr/mildlyinteresting

I tried real butter just the other day on my popcorn and still felt it was missing something. Some people search out that movie theater taste and prefer it to real ingredients.

For those people, beta carotene colored coconut oil, Flavacol salt, and butter topping is all it is. Flavacol has the added benefit of being super finely milled salt, it doesn't have the problem sticking to popcorn like normal salt does.

u/UWalex · 2 pointsr/AdvancedRunning

If you like salt (I do) try using a bunch of Hawaiian red clay salt: https://www.amazon.com/Hawaiian-PaAkai-Alaea-Medium-Grains/dp/B00MA84WKY You kind of have to use a lot to get a lot of the clay flavor which also makes it pretty salty, but that and some black pepper make for a very tropical and unique chicken seasoning. You wouldn't think that clay would taste good but it does.

u/starstough · 2 pointsr/Hashimotos

Mio is that liquid you squeeze into water to flavor it. The mixture tastes like salt water (because it's salt water) and it's hard to get down, so the mio makes it taste more like gatorade. They make sugar free gatorade but it's way less expensive to make your own.

The lite salt has potassium. The mixture I use for ketoade is based on how much potassium and sodium I need while on keto combined with what my normal diet gives me, so you can always do your own calculations and do less lite salt or salt if you make your own. I just find that ketoade is the best tasting way to get enough of those electrolytes in a day. Drinking broth makes me gag.

No it isn't. Himalayan salt for .875 cents per gram and MSG for 1.36 cents per gram. It's more expensive if you buy it from Mercola, of course (1.2 cents per gram for the 3 pack of 17.5 oz, 1.6 cents pre gram for the single 17.5 oz, or 5.97 cents per gram for 100 g), but it's not actually particularly expensive.

Of course, you use a lot less MSG than salt, but MSG is NOT a salt replacement, and if it needed salt without MSG, it still needs it with MSG.

For drinks, consider getting into fermentation. Make milk kefir, water kefir, kombucha. Also homemade coconut and almond milk are cheap and easy to do.

You could potentially buy these things rather than make them but the milk kefir in stores is not the real deal, water kefir (probiotic tonic/soda is how its usually marketed) and kombucha are usually loaded down with sugar. And coconut and almond milk usually have all kinds of added emulsifiers and preservatives.

I'm not big into herbal teas, something I want to learn more about. The only one I normally do is turmeric tea.

As far as the iodine and broccoli, from what I understand the raw cruciferous veggies essentially block iodine from reaching the thyroid to do it job. So you'll want to take more than the daily allowance to counter this. Sea salt has about 10% the daily allowance per serving. These kelp granules have over 300% the daily allowance per serving and are actually rather salty so they can be used as a salt replacement. http://amzn.com/B0007SMLUM

A great breakfast that's easy is hard/medium boiled eggs! You can make a bunch in advance. I make a mixture of Lite Salt (to get my potassium!), black pepper, and a little bit of garlic powder and I dip the eggs in that when I'm eating them. It's great!

As others said, avoid fruit! Even natural sugars are going throw you off on this diet. I know it's difficult if you enjoy fruit, but I promise it's worth it. You can do this!! The community in this subreddit is so supportive and helpful.

Another sub to check out is /r/ketorecipes. I've found some great things there. I'm making coconut butter cookies tonight! Something good that's low carb that I love is steamed brussel sprouts that I put butter, salt, pepper, and garlic powder on. That with keto meatloaf is amazing. I have some good recipes, so if you want any help with that please PM me!

KCKO! You've got this! :D

Amazon for example, it's usually referred as sodium free salt, like this one:

Not as salty really but adds an extra electrolyte and I mentioned chocolate as a source of magnesium. You can have dietary supplements of course if you want but after adaptation they are not needed really. Also, drink a lot of water, no shitting with that or you might get kidney stones.

Unfortunately it looks to be at a pretty steep markup but that’s what I buy from my grocery store here in the states.

The best, most closest thing to replicating they taste of salt, that I’ve ever found is “Table Tasty”. It’s not cheap but it lasts, and is absolutely worth it. I highly encourage all of you to try it out...

Benson's - Table Tasty Salt Substitute - No Potassium Chloride Salt Substitute - No Bitter After Taste - Good Flavor - No Sodium Salt Alternative - New Size 3 oz Bottle With Shaker Top https://www.amazon.com/dp/B006GCMI5Q/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_AtWRDb428DNYN

I’ve also found that certain amounts of sugar makes some foods taste good, in just a slightly different way. I had a hard time with spaghetti after I had to lose salt, but subbing just a bit of sugar in place of it made it very tasty again. This mainly works for sauces and the sort.

Yeah absolutely, glad to help. I take these and also make sure I get plenty of salt and potassium salt.

Thank you! This sounds like great advice.

My product is a seasoning blend working as a salt substitue without potassium - a requirement for kidney patients.

Table tasty:

So yeast makes sense as the key ingredient like you say.

So I'll start from that and slowly add ingredients down the list and taste.

I'm curious , why won't a GC help ?

Here's the seasoning they put in popcorn theater. 5 bucks, will last you a lifetime, same taste then at the movies. You're welcome

Have you tried Amazon? Granted, I know that what's on Amazon for one country (I'm in the US) isn't always available for another country.

But here's the same box I usually buy. Even if it's a bit more expensive- I pay about $3-4 for that much- that's easily enough to go for six months unless you have a huge family or use recipes that call for huge quantities of it, like salt-crusting beef.

You could probably use smaller grains of salt, but use less. Some of the granules fall off, but I don't really worry about it. I used about a small handful (I'm a petite lady) and rubbed the outside of the bird down. I don't wash it off. And I didn't go under the skin, just the outside. I remember reading that salt has a hard time penetrating the fat, and considering the skin is fatty, I wasn't too worried that the meat itself would get too salty.
