Those things are the best! Cheap and stupidly satisfying. Replaced the bathroom light at my girlfriend's house in the middle of the night. Woke up to her mom freaking out—thought she was hallucinating.

Not OP, but they make light bulbs with motion sensors. Simple as screwing it in.

You don't even need to install an occupancy sensor - one may install a regular fixture and use a motion sensor light bulb. I have one (I can't remember what brand) in my garage and it works like a charm.

You could also possibly get one or two of these http://www.amazon.com/HitLights-Color-Changing-Light-Remote-Colors/dp/B006WAMF8C/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1377742351&sr=8-3&keywords=amazon+led+light theyre so cool! I used to use it as my nightlight and you can choose the color you want or have it strobe through the lights (the strobe is slow though unfortunately)

It's all about the 'vibe' of the bathroom... they can be really great, or can be kinda claustrophobic and disorienting (that's just how bathrooms sometimes are while tripping!). Create a positive shower setting beforehand and it can be awesome, especially at doses around the 200-300ug range, where you're tripping balls but still functional enough to be in control of your movements and generally aware of what you're doing.

First off do you have a translucent shower curtain or frosted glass? One cool thing to do is to put one of these into your bathroom light fixture, and slightly unscrew any remaining lights so it's pitch dark except for the LED light casting crazy projections of light on everything.

Also bring a portable speaker/sound system in and put on some chill music - personally my playlist of Gramatik, Bonobo, Blockhead, RJD2, Pretty Lights seems to go really well with that vibe.

Alternatively get like 5 or 10 glowsticks with hooks/eyeholes on one end. Tie them at intervals along a piece of string, and string it up in your shower overhead for some really cool ambient lighting.

  • Speculation that CFLs are subsidized by the government by up to $40 per bulb. unsupported.

  • To support the assertion that CFLs are "a RIP OFF!" he links to this improved incandescent bulb which uses only 72w to generate as much light as a traditional 100w incandescent. You can buy one of these bulbs for $7.99. An equivalent CFL uses only 26w and cost $12.99 for a six pack at a cost of $12.99 for six. So this other bulb costs 3.6x more and uses 2.7x more energy than a CFL, but the CFL is the "RIP OFF"?

  • Assertion that there are "better" ways to save electricity. He suggests that people take shorter showers and use less water washing dishes. Of course everyone here will agree with that, (1) it's not an either/or choice, and (2) even if it were, try asking a random person whether they'd rather do, take shorter showers, or buy CFLs next time they need to replace their bulbs. CFLs are a very low-pain way of saving power. IMO "better" is used subjectively in the article.

  • "I suspect that the 1000 hour rated incandescent outlasted the 10,000 hour rated fluorescent - but they don't say." -- unsupported.

  • "I would guess that I saved $15 per month by using less hot water."

I've got a pretty fun set up in my Sunroom

Lights: some basic string lights, and a couple Ikea MAGNARP lamps plugged into some iHome Smart Plugs, along with Hue Full color bulbs in the ceiling with a Hue Dimmer Switch

The dimmer switch can not control anything but Phillips Hue bulbs but I wanted to use it to set a scene that turned on the string lights and lamps so I set the second press of the dimmer switch to turn the hue lights to a 1% brightness.
From within the Elgato Eve App I set an automation triggered by the Hue lights being set to 1% that turns the lamps and string lights on.

Fans:

It can get pretty hot in the sunroom in the summer with a lot of activity from booth the people and the cat in the house. So I set up a system with Eve Room Sensor, Eve Door Sensor (used on windows) and iHome Smart Plugs to automate 2 fans set up in windows on opposite sides of the room. The Room sensor tracks the air quality and if it is low the fans will kick on, as long as the windows are open, (tracked by door sensor)
when the quality is good again, the fans turn off automatically, and they don't turn on while the string lights are on, since they are kinda loud.

Unfortunately our AC unit has a NEMA 6-15P plug so its not compatible with HomeKit.

u/C_V_Butcher · 6 pointsr/razer

No it's not. The base Hue+ is $59.99 and comes with 4 strips. The Extension kit is $20.99 for 2 more strips. That's vs The Chroma Kit at $79.99 that comes with 2 strips and then 2 extra strips are $29.99. So that's $59.99 for a Hue+ with 4 strips or $109.98 for a Chroma+Extension to get 4 strips.

Now the upswing is Synapse is a lot more reliable than the CAM software that runs Hue+, which is a dumpster fire.

I would not LED strip, its clumsy, lots of parts, and so on

Suggestions:

  1. I would repair the wire connection and use a candelabra LED bulb [I think candelabra is the right socket shape?], which will put far less strain on the weak splices than the old light did because LED uses far less amps. Thats the easy option, use the brightest bulb you can find
  2. Adapt to a normal socket size [you lose space in the glass cover because of the adaption] Use 100w LED bulb
  3. LED light engine retrofit
  4. Replace the socket with a Type A normal socket size, which opens a vast number of LED light bulbs to you, like this very bright LED bulb [you have to check how long these special bulbs are, minus screw base, plus the socket depth etc]

!00 watts per square foot is more appropriate for CFLs that radiate light in all directions, unlike LEDs that radiate in a single direction with these types of bulbs, and are not as electrically efficient as modern LED light bulbs.

These bulbs are pretty inefficient, though, at 85 lumens per watt so I would not use them. There are bulbs that give >110 or so lumens per watt.

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00YEMKJE2

32 gallon brute is 2.84 square feet.

These are 1200 lumen bulbs you linked to. Eight of them gives 9600 lumens. 9600 / 2.84 = 3380 lumens per square feet. That's close to where we want for LEDs that broadcast in a single direction to be but the distance from the light sources plays a bigger role in brute Space Buckets. That's why we want to use lux meters for verifying light levels at plant canopy level.

Eight 1600 lumen bulbs will give you about 4500 lumens per square foot which will perform better.

Removing the cover will give roughly a 10% greater efficiency if not more particularly over longer distances since the cover creates a wider beam angle. But you have to understand the safety of removing the cover which I am going to keep mentioning so we have no injured bucketeers:

https://www.reddit.com/r/SpaceBuckets/comments/6fdmsn/dismantled_led_globes/dihxuha/

Here are some calculators that people should play with:

http://dev.edman007.com/~edman007/pub/par-dli-cal.html (this appears to be for a CRI of 100 looking at the code so may be about 20% low for a cri 80 light source found in common LED bulbs. The wavelength measurements for color LEDs appears dead on. BOOK MARK THIS PAGE!)

TL;DR use more efficient bulbs and read the safety disclaimer if removing the covers.

edit: and just get the UFO for a brute

u/equivocalcat · 5 pointsr/InteriorDesign

Other folks are giving very technical answers. They are correct, but you'll have an easier time just looking for bulbs labeled as "daylight" bulbs. This is the typical marketing name for 5000k color temperature bulbs, so you won't need to go reading all the fine print to find what you're looking for.

Hope this helps! :)

If it starts flowering while still a clone and then goes back to veg before finishing so that you can grow it bigger and then flowered again for you to harvest, it will totally stress it out, can screw up its growth cycle and possibly go hermie. Only once it gets more than 10 or 11 hours of darkness at a time will it think "fall/winter is coming soon" and start budding, so all you need to do to make sure it doesn't start flowering yet is keep a light shining on it 24 hours a day. Technically just about any light bright enough for people to see in would stop it from flowering, but to keep it growing healthy instead of stretching out and losing leaves you can make a super easy cheap CFL light and keep it nice and close.

Go to Home Depot, Lowes, Walmart, or wherever and get one cheapo extension cord, two socket to lamp adapters, and two or more "daylight" or "full spectrum" CFL bulbs that are at least 20W actual or 100W "equivalent wattage." They'll likely be cheaper in the actual store than the Amazon price due to shipping. If you get a multi-pack of bulbs, you can always use the extras around your house though. Plug the adapters in opposite plugs of the extension cord so they both fit on, screw a bulb into each socket, and hang it a few inches from your plant.

u/b14z3d21 · 5 pointsr/Hue

In my experience you can usually find a 4 pack on sale for cheaper than buying 4 individual bulbs or even 2 2-packs.

Currently on Amazon a single bulb is $46.95 ($187.80) & the 2-pack is currently $89.99 ($179.98).

A 4-pack with the hub (which you could eBay or save for future use) is currently running $180.16 which is actually more expensive than I have seen in a few months. Lately they have been around $160 (I actually paid $146 in June).

So with the current pricing on a 4-pack you get an extra hub for .18¢ . IMO, a 4 pack is usually the way to go.

EDIT: I just found a deal on Amazon for 2-pack starter kits for $77.93 ($155.86). You will have 2 extra hubs though but that seems to be the best deal for 4 bulbs right now.

Thanks. It happened because I took them inside last fall over winter since i'm in an area that freezes in winter. I had a grow light over them almost 24/7 until two weeks ago when I brought all my plants back outside.

The grow light I have is a cheap one however. Some of my plants grow very well under it and others don't, like the ones in this example. Here's the light for anyone curious - http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00AKKU7SA

Next year when I bring them inside I'm thinking about getting one of those Apollo grow lights.

Only reason I asked if they are etiolated is that I've seen some plants that look kind of like echeveria actually be plants that naturally grow long and spindly, so didn't want to jump the gun and chop off their heads.

u/tomgabriele · 4 pointsr/HomeImprovement

> I would propose that any fixture you purchase be able to fit the Philips Hue bulbs. You can set them to one color out of 16 million.

I disagree. In addition to being overpriced, they are overkill. Hue bulbs may be capable of 16 million colors, but you would never want 15.8 million of those for a bathroom.

If OP wants smart bulbs, something like these $15 tunable white bulbs will serve them better. Cheaper, not proprietary hub, and can still be set to any color you'd reasonably want.

There are also no-hub-required wifi tunable bulbs, but I don't have experience with them.

But really, OP should just buy basic 2700-3000k led bulbs and not worry about being able to customize the exact hue of light.

Tossing the description through google translate...

> Color temperature: 2,700 Kelvin. High-quality, warm white light for a cozy and secure home. Compact dimming without installation - Experience stepless dimming via Hue dimmer switch or Hue app

These are the "white" lights. They only dim the intensity - there is no color changing functionality. They cannot shift the color temperature of "white" either.

They are perfectly good bulbs in the right spot. I have them in my kitchen.

If you are after the... lets call it "hue experience", you will want the equivalent of the color starter. The white ambient (white ambient starter) is what I find myself using most often. The white ambient lights can't change to blue or red - but it can change to a very warm or very cool white... which I find more useful for living spaces.

Whatever stock Amazon had of the White & Color Ambiance A19 Gen 3 bulb was already obliterated in less than 24 hours of it going live. So unless they get more before the 17th, if you were looking to get these the only options now are through 3rd party sellers or warehouse refurbs [[ EDIT: actually Amazon now doesn't even show those, it simply states currently unavailable with no other seller options ]]

Could this mean even though the offer for this particular item is already effectively over despite the promotion running to the 17th? Guess we'll have to see..

Don't buy that. As a rule, you should have 32 true/actual watts per square foot. The one you linked is rated only 4-6 W.

In Southern California, I believe you'll be able to put them outside soon. Therefore, I don't think you need to buy something as power intensive as the one linked by /u/GuyoFromOhio, especially for two plants only. Something between 20-30 W should be enough, even taking into account some waste due to it being white. Either grab this if you have two spare/old lamps, (on the plus side, you get another 4 for your house) or a higher rated single bulb (LED or CFL), although it will be more expensive.

u/launachgewahren · 3 pointsr/houseplants

I bought it six months ago. Expensive, but none of the other bulbs were strong enough.

If you're interested in the color changing feature of the bulbs, take a look at the Osram RGBW bulbs, or the Osram Tunable White bulbs (if you're okay just adjusting color temperature and not getting funky with it).

Same basic functionality, much cheaper, and they connect just fine to a Wink hub without needing the Osram Bridge.

So I have a two bedroom apartment and I've got a mix of the bulbs, the Hue Gos and the light strips.

I don't use any non-Hue lighting so all of my light is controllable via app and timers. It allows you to create presets, so I have a number of lighting schemes that I really like that get progressively dimmer over the course of an evening and move from brighter colors like greens and oranges and yellows to soft blues and reds and purples as it gets later. It kind of becomes a Pavlovian cue that sleep time is coming. You can also set them on timed transitions - so it may take 30 minutes to slowly transition between the settings. So the light can be always moving slowly into differing colors and brightnesses schemes over the course of the evening.

In the mornings, rather than use an alarm clock, I wake to a gradually rising indoor sunrise where warm orange lights come up over the course of 30 minutes. Such a pleasant way to wake up. Gradual and natural instead of sudden and abrupt.

It's also super cool with voice control via Alexa, Siri, Google Home, etc. I just say things like 'Alexa, chill mode' and the lighting hits a smooth preset I have.

The stuff is expensive, but you can add pieces over time to the network. They are energy efficient and so far have lasted really well. I've not had any fail in 3 or 4 years of using them. I started off just wanting a lightstrip and ended up going whole house.

Life changing.

Anything Z-Wave and almost anything Zigbee will work with a SmartThings hub.

I have gone with a handful of Z-Wave switches. One switch can operate multiple light bulbs, and are still usable as a switch.

I think the general consensus is to go with switches instead of bulbs, for cheaper cost, and easier for anyone other than you to operate, like guests. Unless you are renting, or want the color change ability.

I have been eyeing the Sylvania Smart + (Formerly Osram Lightify) bulbs for some color changing bulbs that work with SmartThings.

I don't have one, but many people love their Phillips hue. I think you can get basic functionality through the Zigbee support, without the Phillips Hub, but if you want the best experience the hub is better. Still integrates well with SmartThings.

LIFX also get good reviews and works with SmartThings.

u/fiveseven808 · 3 pointsr/Hue

Hi there! Adjustable temperature is one thing I drool over with the hue system (yeah, I'm weird lol). This is the minimum you would need to see the CT range of the hue ambiance bulbs:
https://www.amazon.com/Philips-Dimmable-Compatible-HomeKit-Assistant/dp/B01N4OMRJ9/

However, you only get 4 presets vs the entire range of color temps and the system by itself is not "smart" or compatible with your phone. It is however able to be added to a full system with hue bridge such as...

https://www.amazon.com/Philips-Ambiance-Starter-Compatible-Assistant/dp/B01F6T4R80/
Which comes with everything you need to get started and connect your phone to the system. This setup will allow you to play with every single variation of CT for the hue ambiance bulbs via your smartphone!

The first option is the most affordable, however you only get 4 preconfigured non adjustable settings, vs the second is probably your best bet for a smart phone compatible system that gives you 'infinite' adjustability. If you don't care about smartphone/smarthome integration, look into Philips Sceneswitch bulbs! I have a bunch of them in some multi bulb fixtures I didn't want to spend the money for ambiance bulbs and dimmer switches lol.

I would use these one of these bulbs 105 watt 5000k and 105 watt 6000k.I have ordered both they work excellent and their cheap. The 6000k for some reason are alot larger, they both seem to work great. Here's the comparison, those are my bulbs. You can put those 1 inch away and they wont burn. Get better bulbs.

6500k photography bulbs such as these (or any others on amazon):

They use 45w but are the equivalent of a 200W light bulb in brightness. The 4 of them will drown out any yellow light.

There are also these if you want brighter:

u/Manic_in_the_Midwest · 2 pointsr/HotPeppers

Yeah, that will certainly help, and, as /u/juanitopeppers points out, move the CFLs closer. A good rule of thumb is to place your hand on the tops of the peppers (palm side down). If you can stand the heat from the bulbs for 30 seconds, then, your peppers can too. Also, check out these CFLs -> https://www.amazon.com/Photography-Fluorescent-Spectrum-LimoStudio-LMS121/dp/B005FRCUHY/ref=sr_1_9?ie=UTF8&qid=1497409361&sr=8-9&keywords=6500k+cfl - with 4 of those, you would be around 28,000 lumens which would give you decent results. Also, if you could surround the plants with some form of reflective material (mylar / thick white paint on wood / grow tent) you will also increase the efficiency of your lights. Happy growing!

You are correct, it does need a hub. /u/Wintonson you can buy the bulbs in a kit with the hub or you can buy the hub standalone. I have some of these and they work pretty great for my purposes. There is an API so if you’re a coder you can control them through code, some applications such as f.lux are compatible, you can control them with Apple HomeKit/from your phone, etc.

Do note that they’re not all RGB. They also sell ones which are shades of white only. You need the White + Color “Ambiance” ones to do like the OP. The one you linked as well as the ones I linked are the right kind.

The Echo Plus (2nd Gen at least) can also work as a hub for them, so if you happen to have that anyway then you don’t need the standalone hub, but I don’t have one and can’t speak towards how well that works.

You might be asking about LED strips (which I've had mixed results with), but when I recently built out a client suite in my home I just got a couple of LIFX's color bulbs. I had enough room behind my monitors, and the power strip was already back there anyways.

Now they automatically come on in the morning and slowly raise in brightness throughout the day (I have a window in the room as well), and then they slowly dim in the late afternoon. All while maintaining 6500k.

That's about all I can think of at the moment.

If you are going to do this, do it in stages. Z-Wave and ZigBee are mesh networks...meaning that the reliability of the network gets much better the more devices you have. Also, with these mesh networks:

  • Battery operated devices DO NOT reinforce the mesh
  • The only devices that reinforce the mesh are devices that are always powered from the mains

I see so many people complaining about how the Z-Wave or ZigBee devices don't work, when they are relying on too many battery operated devices.

For Z-Wave devices, choose Z-Wave Plus over Z-Wave...it's the newest standard, and has much better range.

In the US, Z-Wave operates in the 900 MHz spectrum and ZigBee in the 2.4 GHz spectrum. Personally, I "prefer" Z-Wave devices as there is a lot of "junk" in the 2.4 GHz spectrum right now. However, the ZigBee devices are operating reliably as I have a strong mesh setup (with non-battery operated devices).

Two great application for the Leak Sensors:

  • Near your hot water heater (when they go, they always leak)
  • Under your A/C drip pan (if you have central air)

Great applications for door open/close sensors:

  • Turn closet lights on/off when the door opens or closes
  • Turn on entry and hallway lights when an entry door opens, but only when it's dark (30 minutes before sunset or after sunrise)...turn off 1 minute later
  • Notify me when my gun safe is opened

    Great Application for Motion Sensors

  • Turn on outside ceiling fans (but only if the temp is above 72 degrees)
  • Turn on lamps while motion is active when it's dark

The motion sensors I linked above are the new ones...the magnetically mount. What's cool is that the magnet is in the sensor, and it's strong enough to attach the sensor to a dry wall screw (no need to mount the adapter bracket).

Just get normal household bulbs (100w equivalent LEDs) and remove the plastic piece that diffuses the light. Philips is a good brand.

Maybe you can find a couple old reading lamps and screw in a few of those bulbs. If you don't let the plant grow too large before you change the light cycle to 12/12, you can flower a small plant with a few of those bulbs.

u/Trichostema · 2 pointsr/Hue

This starter kit seems the best way to go, unless you want to go with white.
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07D1J5QC7/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o01__o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Here, you get 2 bulbs and a hub.

Just the hub is about $48, so the bulbs are more like $25 each.

Or you could go with https://www.amazon.com/Philips-Hue-Equivalent-Compatible-Assistant/dp/B06Y3QXSGX/ref=sr_1_12?keywords=hue+kit&qid=1550434393&s=hi&sr=1-12, three bulbs and a hub.

Or, check out your local Bed Bath and Beyond and see if they still have any on clearance.

u/Viper999DC · 2 pointsr/Hue

Hue sells many different configurations of the starter kit, with different amounts and types of bulbs. The cheaper one likely has fewed bulbs, and probably only white bulbs. Older kits can also be cheaper. My opinion is that if you're going to get smart bulbs that don't do color, then you're better of with smart switches. The Hue "white" bulbs are a really ugly yellow that I can't stand. White Ambiance is a nice middle ground, at half the cost of the color bulbs, while giving you full control over the "warmth" spectrum. So you can change your lighting to match the time of day, for instance.

This is the cheapest kit I see on Amazon.com. It's basically the cost of the bridge with 2 white bulbs. Then you have the non-refurb for slightly more. This one is still white bulbs, but now you have 4. This one is like the first kit, but with a dimmer switch. I recommend dimmer switches, as otherwise guests will use the wall switch, disabling your smart bulbs. Then you start getting into the white ambiance kits, this one with a dimmer and 2 bulbs. Finally the color bulb kits will be the most expensive.

So, what's right for you? Depends on what you want. Usually you want to buy the starter kit that has a "free bridge". Use the following price chart to determine the value of your kit:

  • White bulb: $15 ea.
  • White Ambiance bulb: $25 ea.
  • White & Color Abiance bulb: $50 ea.
  • Dimmer switch: $20 ea.
  • Motion Sensor: $40 ea.

If the kit costs the value of it's contents or less, it's worthwhile. If it costs more than that, you're paying for the bridge. Usually the cheaper kits will have you paying more for the bridge. By the time you get into the 4-color-pack range they're giving you a credit.

Now, all that said, if your concern is cheap DO NOT BUY INTO HUE! It's extremely expensive, probably the priciest smart bulb. Ikea Tradfri and LiFX both have cheaper options that are similar in quality. Or if you really want cheap, go with Sengled. Hue is the premium option.
u/jskoker · 2 pointsr/Random_Acts_Of_Amazon

No lie, one of the best things you can get for your apartment is a bluetooth light bulb. I've had mine for a few years now and its always a conversation starter, mood setter, and whatever you can think of. They are a bit pricy for a light bulb, but if you are replacing an incandescent bulb with an LED one it will pay for itself over the life of the bulb.

Check it out!

u/Deathbyspatzle · 2 pointsr/homeautomation

Not sure what your lights look like but two easy options for adding simple motion detection are either adding a bulb with that capability like these:

Or, if you have outdoor flood lights you can most likely just add a motion sensor to the unit. Turn off the power. Unscrew then cap on the bottom of the unit and install the motion sensor. Something like this:

I used a LiFX smart bulb w color that fits perfectly in the lamp (here). It's LED so super low heat but if I had to redesign I would add more space around the bulb for sure

u/KevinNuge · 2 pointsr/buildapc

I added the lights in using these: NZXT Extension Kit, they're 2 LED lights that have adhesive and magnets on the back side, I hooked the up to the NZXT controller and use a software on my PC called CAM to control the lighting.

If you buy the NZXT controller, I believe it is bundled with led strips.

Don't use CFLs. They are obsolete for growing. The new LED bulbs outperform CFLs (even less watts used and more lumens).

Use 100 watt equivalent ones. They come in various spectrums, as well.

Almost all of them I see are only 60 watts though. Is that bright enough?

u/relativityboy · 1 pointr/smarthome

Already good comments here, but TBF the best remote things are outlets and wall switches. That way if/when you hit a switch to turn something off the 'old' way it will still respond if you want it on.

Also, you need a hub. Smartthings or Wink.
The rest are worthless (Hue hub and all the other hubs). IMO Philips Hue is lame. If you want colored bulbs go get Sylvania lightify (cheaper, less crap in your house since it doesn't need its own hub).

Ideal starter setup would be an echo dot $50, a hub $100, two wall switches ($30ea) (for unswitched outlets) and a couple wall paddle switches ($30ea). That much hardware would set you back about $270, but would add a fair bit of fun and convenience.

u/fireworks_in_the_fog · 1 pointr/buildapc

Unfortunately not. The one I purchased only emits green but the kind you are looking for allows multiple colors.

The power supply cable has several branching inputs for attaching lights or fans. They're pretty long so you shouldn't feel limited on placement or anything. I waited to install mine after hooking up all the major components, but that's up to you! Best of luck on your build dude!

Not too sure just yet but I was thinking of building my own with a few of those.

u/Khabi · 1 pointr/homeassistant

So my suggestions: I've linked the things I use, but they're just suggestions.

  • Lighting: Philips hue. This is because you don't want to wire up any new light switches. If you get a starter pack like this one it comes with a light switch you can place on the wall with double sided tape. You just have to teach the people in your house not to use the old switch anymore. In the case of kids rooms, the switch actually pops out of the holder and you could put it on their nightstand or whatnot so they can turn the lights on if they need to. The stand alone accent lights they have are really good as well, I have a few behind my TV that make the room pop somewhat.
  • Zwave door / window sensors. With the dongle these are more useful then you'd think. If you have these and hue bulbs you could have hall lights turn on at like 10% brightness at night so you can see if you need to get up at night. I use them for my back patio so when I take the dogs out at night the lights automatically turn on, then turn off 15 min later on their own. If you're new to Zwave remember that these sensors do not repeat the signal. In your case since you don't want wire in powered devices you would need to get some repeaters to make sure you have enough signal strength or you won't receive events.
  • Smart plugs: Weemo are good, but if you don't want to have a whole bunch of different types of devices, zwave would work just as well and it would also help with your signal strength. I actuallly use both in my setup to control things like air-purifiers and I have a few that report how much energy they use so I can automate things like when the dishwasher is running or laundry is done.
  • Thermostat: I'm not sure if I can help you with that. I use a Nest for my whole house, but sounds like your setup may be different. There are plenty of good zwave thermostats out there you could hook up to this setup tho.

Thank you for such a comprehensive reply. Normally I would treat this sort of thing as a keep trying/keep failing/try again sort of thing, but since it was just one packet of seeds and one pot, I didn't exactly have that luxury! But you have inspired me, I would love to learn this stuff so tomorrow I'm gonna pick up a few more seed packets and things to grow them in! Anyway, back to these sprouts...

The good news-- it's not a mug, but a real pot, with holes in the bottom!

The bad news, I haven't dumped water that comes out the bottom, so it has probably reabsorbed it. I'm guessing the lack of growth is from that + not enough light

However you make it sound like I do have a chance at saving them if the pot has holes. Sounds like they need to get outside ASAP. I'm assuming I should still harden them first?

The window they're (right) next to has a screen.. should I mix in some time with that open in addition to a regular hardening schedule to give them some extra oxygen & exposure?

Also unfortunately I have no idea what soil I used, as it came in a gift baggie from my friend. However he grows a lot of houseplants & vegetables at home so I'm hoping that would mean it's something with at least some nutrients! I'll ask him tomorrow too

As for location, I'm in LA. Unfortunately a cold spell hit just today, and forecast shows the next week with highs of low 60s, and nighttimes getting down to low 40s, so it sounds like it's too cold to move them outside permanently for now

If it is too cold to take them outside, how do you feel about using Daylight LED bulbs? At the suggestion of someone in my xpost to HotPeppers, I ordered these: https://www.amazon.com/AmazonBasics-Equivalent-Daylight-Non-Dimmable-6-Pack/dp/B01MSMKBG3/?th=1 , but I may instead just pick up something like this at the store tomorrow: https://www.homedepot.com/p/Philips-100W-Equivalent-Daylight-5000K-T2-Twister-CFL-Light-Bulb-414078/203349671?cm_mmc=Shopping%7CTHD%7Cgoogle%7C&mid=siCqjagOR%7Cdc_mtid_89037lm25188_pcrid_227841299674_pkw__pmt__product_203349671_slid_

For Zigbee lights that work directly with the SmartThings Hub I’ve been using Sengled Element Color Plus RGBW+CCT bulbs.

Generic Zigbee lights also work with ST’s local execution mode.

Frustratingly, no Z-Wave lights do this (but switches/outlets do).

I would try the 40 watt. 60 just seems too bright to start out with. You may even want to go less than 40 but it will be harder to find. You could try a lamp with a dimmer switch to lower the amount of power the bulb gets and thus its light level. Also I saw a 25 watt on amazon. There is also color bulbs like this that you might be able to choose a darker color to produce less light. http://www.amazon.com/HitLights-Multicolor-Watt-MR16-Bulb/dp/B006WAMF8C/ref=sr_1_7?s=hi&ie=UTF8&qid=1414210738&sr=1-7

In the future if you want some pretty nice lighting, pick up some 100w daylight bulbs and put them in some cheap lamps (I picked up 3 used lamps from Goodwill for $3 and just removed the shades). Put one directly to the left of you, one to the right, and one above and slightly to the front. Amazon has a pack of 100w daylight bulbs for about $20 that are super bright. It makes for a pretty damn nice looking setup for around $25, and it's not really distinguishable from a much more expensive setup.

>Ok, so that one specifically says it’s for in-ground use. Since you are growing in containers, you should use a product that’s labeled as potting soil.

Well, shit. Maybe I can find a use for the two bags I still have...

>What specific plants are you growing that you are having trouble with?

My catnip in particular is the one that is being very fussy, for some reason. My basil and lemon balm sucks it up so far.

>The plants in your pictures look ok to me. You might want to pinch off the tops of your basil to encourage them to bush out a bit more, but other than that they seem to be doing ok. Do you have them under grow lights?

I do. This one. I am planning on adding this soon when I get a second clamp lamp.

Also, how far would you recommend pinching the tall basil plant?

It plugs into existing fixture.

I have seen a number if sales and paid $22. Think it's a little more now.

There's tons of cheaper stuff out there, but you'd have to be flexible on your must haves.

No other lock that I know of except the August can be accessed with time sensitive or love time codes. The Schlage and Kwikset models can have codes input but they'd have to be deleted later manually. Schlage sense locks can be accessed through their app to delete codes or deactivate them remotely, but that app costs $5 a month so the August would be cheaper in the long run as there isn't a fee.

You can get a bunch of Cree LEDs that connect to WiFi and are controlled with Alexa natively, they're pretty cheap comparatively at $14. Though you'll lose your other must of light temperature colors changing.

I've had problems most of my life with anxiety-related sleep problems. I was completely dependent for years on taking a calcium supplement a bit before bedtime - they function like the pill-equivalent of a glass of warm milk. If you're taking one anyway, I'd suggest moving that to bedtime.

Another side-effect free sleep aid - albeit maybe an odd one - is red lights before bedtime. I've tried this after seeing how NASA is implementing this on the International Space Station, and I've been liking it a lot. I read a little bit with the red light before bed, and I'm zonked out within a couple of paragraphs.

I've also used the Benedryl (diphenhydramine, on my midwife's safe list) when all else fails. I look at it as these old, OTC drugs are tested very well, and losing a lot of sleep can have way worse effects on the body.

EDIT: In case you try it out, I grabbed one of these light bulbs for my night stand, so it can switch to other colors when I like.

Concerning the voice interface:

Unfortunately I don't have much information about voice authentication. For the speech recognition there are a few ways to go. You can either use an open source project such as CMU Sphinx or simon, you can use a smartphone and SiriProxy (example) or you could offload the recognition to Wolfram Alpha.

There are of course many more options, those are just the ones I remember reading about. You should definitely do a search for "Home automation voice control" and similar terms.

I think an Arduino is a good choice for the outside interface. The Arduino can communicate with the "voice control box" either via USB /Serial, or over a network shield. Depending on how your software is organized, network might be easier.

For the individual controls, you will need to be more specific still. Look at the fan, thermostat, air conditioner and check how they are currently controlled. Is there a remote for them? Do they have some kind of interface exposed, is there a button that could easily be accessed?

There are many different ways. For example:

Lights

  • If they have a plug, you could use something like this
  • Even without a plug you could use this
  • Or you could change the light bulb for this
  • This might also work.
  • Or you could connect them directly to a relais controlled by the Arduino.

All these options have different advantages and disadvantages.

The IR controlled bulb will need the sender in the same room, and controlling multiple bulbs with separate commands might be tricky.

The RF outlets and sockets are a bit tricky to get to work at first.

The X10 control is the most robust and mature system, but also one of the more expensive options.

Directly controlling the lights with relais either requires lots of cabling or many small slave units that will need another way of communicating with the master.

These are all just intended as starting points for you. Usually for a bachelor thesis you will need to not just demonstrate what you used, but also what you considered and didn't use, and why you didn't use these options.

u/Roentgenator · 1 pointr/sanpedrocactus

I think the 150 and 600 are both equivalent and not actual wattage

u/SeaNap · 1 pointr/HomeServer

The Pentium G4600 has a TDP of 51watts, which if running 24/7 would cost $58/yr @ 13cent/kWhr

The $135 build comes in a little under powered (4910 vs 5450) but would be ~$170 cheaper (135 vs 302). The TDP on the xeon is 95watts, for the sake of math if the server actually was running 24/7 at max TDP it would cost $108/yr worst case. So it would take more than 3.5 years to break even.

This $297 build matches his budget (297 vs 302) but has a huge performance gain (8010 vs 5450) as well as more ram (12GB vs 8GB). The TDP of this xeon is also 95watts. Absolute worst case scenario this build will cost $50/yr more ($4/mo).

Whats hard to quantify is how often will the cpu hit the max TDP? What would a real world kWhr/yr number be? This was also assuming 24/7 operation, I can tell you that my server is not maxed out 24/7. If this is shortened to 12/7 operation then your talking about the difference of $2/mo in electricity for 3k more passmark.

Replacing two 100watt bulbs with a 14watt LED (assuming 3hr/day use) saves ~$26/yr which should more than make up for the xeon @ 12/7 use.

I see what you mean, I've been doing some research and I found some CFLs that are specific to growing. Like this link. I don't know how well they work though. I like keeping it in my room and I don't really want to hang overhead florescent fluorescent lights so a smaller light would be ideal.

Thanks for the advice! I won't remove any more leaves for now, until I learn more.

u/PM_ME_UR_PLANTS · 1 pointr/succulents

If you combine a magenta bulb with a "daylight" bulb like this (http://www.amazon.com/Philips-455717-Equivalent-Daylight-4-Pack/dp/B00YEMKJE2), it should look pretty normal. You can also skip the magenta entirely in place of daylight bulbs. LED is a little more power efficient, a little cooler, and handles power cycling better (the last being the greatest advantage IMO). However, power cycling isn't a huge deal for grow lights, so both fluorescent and LED work pretty well right now, and fluorescent does have a lower initial cost.

Here's how I configured my tap switch:

Mode 1: Everything is on, full brightness (but warm light)
Mode 2: Sunset mode, orange/reddish
Mode 3: Romance mode (think red light district)
Mode 4: Everything off

In her bedroom the main light is a warm white, but after 6pm we have two Ikea lamps with light bulbs from https://www.lowbluelights.com (which I received from a friend a while ago). You are looking for the
Hue White Ambiance Starter Kit https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01F6T4R80/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_imaAybKVJN7RZ

I don't think that there was ever a new gen for the white ambiance bulbs. Gen 3 refers to the improved greens and blues in the color bulbs. If you don't need the hue dimmer in the kit above, you can probably buy a hue bridge at a discount on ebay/craigslist and then buy the bulbs separately ($30 each) instead.

u/Jarvicious · 1 pointr/HomeImprovement

The Hue bulbs aren't known for high output, no. The wattage to output equivalents are only estimated (as compared to incandescent bulbs) but the Hue bulbs are generally ~9w or so which his pretty low. The light color is also going to have an effect on perceived output and I've found the Hue bulbs to be far more shaded than most generic LEDs.

Most of the mega-low power consumption bulbs are going to be "60w equivalent". If you look for 100w equivalent you'll generally get a bit more light. These are rated at 11w and 1400Lm compared to Phillips' 9w 800lm. You should see a difference in output and for only a few hours a week, the difference in consumption will literally be pennies.

u/freakingwilly · 1 pointr/pcmasterrace

Unless you have material in your case that would be UV reflective, I'd suggest going with a strip of RGB lights instead. Something like the NZXT HUE+ would work really well. This way, you won't have to decide between a color... you can have them all!

Also, if you really like the UV color, you can use a purple or deep blue for the same effect (minus the glowy parts).

u/Combative_Douche · 1 pointr/microgrowery

I suggested something that would save you money.

Get a bunch of 23w bulbs. They're cheap as shit. You can buy 6 for $12 on Amazon, so I'm sure you can find em even cheaper at the hardware store or walmart. Then buy some of these for like a buck each, put em all together with a power strip or two, and DONE.

But I'm sure you've found some super special way that works even better, using overpriced bulbs, with the wrong color temp, that nobody would ever suggest.

Just curious, on the grow your referring to where you spent zero dollars... How big was your harvest? Was the shit any good? How much lighting (watts)? How were you able to successfully grow without even knowing what color temp your lights need to be?

u/wellitsbouttime · 1 pointr/Cooking

Not my Kitchen either. I'm not surprised I don't share the same tastes with a stranger. I'm curious if the color of that light can be changed to whatever fits the mood. But seeing as how I've never met OP, I bet he isn't offended that I might have different tastes.

As for the Sonos, I do have a bridge, does the Echo/Home not control the speakers via the bridge? You're post makes me think they're hard wired? Not via some "auth" connection to my bridge by being on the same network, i.e. Sonos App type control

Looks as though the hub connects to my router so I'm assuming I can identify lights individually in order to have them spread around the house and do different things?

u/letsmaketacos · 1 pointr/homeassistant

Great work! I was a little surprised that Wink isn't on there. For $35 the 1st gen hub is a great entry point for beginners as a Zigbee/Z-Wave radio. I used Wink's built in automations (Robots) to get started while getting HA up and running. It's easy to turn Wink into a "dumb" hub once you get HA all figured out, then you can look into dedicated radios for HA to take Wink out of the picture completely. Wink can be a little slow at times, but it is a great low cost entry point.

You also might want to add Sengled Element bulbs and Sylvania Smart+ color bulb, they are inexpensive and work extremely well!

u/Horror_Corgi · 1 pointr/succulents

It may be worth it to just get a small grow light. I've been using this bulb in a regular desk lamp for the past 4 years. It's not going to get the same results as a larger, brighter one, but it should be good enough to keep a small number of plants from getting leggy.

u/neminat · 1 pointr/homeautomation

in my opinion, you need to pick your platform first. Are you going to get a SmartThings hub or use something like Home Assistant. Using Alexa or Google assistant sounds great - until you find out that it is limited to simple if this then that type of automations which are not enough in my opinion. You will need wither HA or SmartThings (with webcore) to do this.

If you ask me, id say buy a smartthings hub and integrate webcore (free) for automations. Then skip the hue bulbs (although they are great) and pick up a smartthings compatible bulbs such as these - https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B073ZBYXKQ/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1 (RGBW) or these (white) https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07576J38L/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1 . Look at the multipack and other packages.

I tried out home assistant and while great - i hated building it, the thought of maintaining it, supporting it, upgrading it, and the configuration is developer minded and sometimes requires editing of yaml files, and integrations to simple things like Google Assistant was a pain in the ass (free - paid is 5 a month and is easy).

I absolutely love SmartThings but webcore is a must for me. Its easy, GUI, makes sense and best of all works.

u/Jhubbz86 · 1 pointr/homeautomation

I bought this Sengled bulb since I didn't want to drop a bunch of money on a Hue pack. It's works well for what it's intended for, which is a front of the house pole light in an enclosure. I like the fact it runs natively through ST. I was planning on getting a few more later on to stick in some bedside lamps, but I haven't gotten to that point yet. I run all my stuff through ST, besides a nest hello doorbell.

One idea I've been messing with is getting a similar bulb and setting it up in the basement so I have a visual alert someone is at the door besides listening for the doorbell. I realize Nest Hello cannot be recognized by ST, so it will be difficult to set that up.

u/more_load_comments · 1 pointr/IndoorGarden

Thanks! I'll check on the bulb. Something like a 6200K 23 watt I think. Daylight with blue end mostly. CFL to keep heat at 80 deg works perfect at 10 inches away. About 10 bucks on amazon plus another 10 for the reflector is best I could find. Will get a 2800k for the peppers and tomatoes to induce flowering after I get them on the hydro for a month or two. The lettuce stays on blueish since it's all veg growth you want.

I have four of the Sylvania Lightify tunable white light bulbs and the SmartThings hub handles them without an additional hub. I have them in different rooms and 'allowed access' to them in the Google Home app so I can say 'turn off the lights in the living room' and both turn off.

I can also say dim my bedroom light to 5%. You have to pick a percent if you want the lights to dim.

u/waterboysh · 1 pointr/Hue

I don't have any Hue lights yet, but am starting to look.

How good are these "bundle offers" on the official Hue site? $45 for 3 white ambiance lights and $64 for 6 plain white dimmable bulbs.

Since we're so close to Black Friday and Cyber Monday, I'm considering going ahead and getting the starter kit that's on sale and then just holding off to see what I can get in about a month for cheaper.

The main reason I'm starting to look at smart bulbs (vs switches) is I suffer from migraines often, and I prefer warmer color whites and my wife prefers the cooler whites because it looks more natural. With the white ambiance bulbs I think we can both be happy.

Lutron makes switches and plugs that you can control with the harmony hub. If the link you posted is what you have then that is the only HUB you need. Look at the Lutron Caseta. I once let a DWC bucket run dry. That was what I'd call "fried"; a plant that was literally coarse and crisp to the touch from a lack of moisture and heat, where the leaves crumble in your hand. This is a severely wilted plant.

>It happens as a result of too much light and no nutrients

In my case that must mean "any light at all". I used the same bulb I use for seedlings: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00YEMKJE2 I'm not sure how dimmer I'm supposed to go than that. Is that really too bright?

To be honest I went in fully under the assumption that the plant would end up looking like this before rooting.

I feel like I'm being held to an impossible standard given the circumstances. The plant was mature; that was the real fuckup, but there's no mitigating the passage of time. But you're really saying is that if my light were dimmer, this would be a green plant right now?
