(Part 3) Best pc-compatible games software according to redditors

I'm the Marketing Manager for Amazon Game Downloads. Our Facebook page hit 100K users and I solicited keys from some of our vendors to do a giveaway in celebration.

I posted these keys to a google doc and distributed a link to this doc to some folks at Neogaf/Cheapassgamer.

This weekend someone dropped in and took all of the keys from the google doc, leaving notes like "reddit was here".

I sill play through both of these every few years. The best part is that they've gotten even better since they were released due to the cult following.

Modders have gone through every line of code in these games and fixed all of the bugs that originally released with the game, and even revealed hidden features with unofficial patches for both Fallout 1 and Fallout 2. And I highly recommend the high resolution patch for both Fallout 1 and Fallout 2 for better graphics.

I'd also like to give a shout out to Fallout Tactics. It doesn't have the same open-world RPG elements as the first 2 Fallouts, but it has better and more interesting combat mechanics. Definitely worth a play if you liked the other 2.

Civ V - Brave New World - $14.99

I've seen it discounted for 30% a few times before, but never more. And honestly, Rocket League is such a good game that you will put so many hours into it's worth it even at full price. So if you've been hesitating to get it, I'd say now is a good time.

For that price, it's better to get the first game w/the cable than to get it separate. ($22 at the time of posting)

The "premium" one, not at all. The $10 one: yes

Basically difference between the $10 standard and $50 "premium" version is that the premium comes with like 20 million isk in free ships/modules and a plex worth 850 million.

The big thing that makes starter packs desirable is the Cerebral Accelerator which significantly boosts the rate at which you train skills (and get up to speed) during your first month. If your still willing to spend $40 on EvE I'd reccomend buying the $10 starter and a pair of plex worth 1.6 Billion ISK.

That doesn't make sense in this context. Stop trying to pad your amazon link spamming account with faux genuine posts. You're just tacking shit onto the top comment using a "reddit meme" to fill out your karma to look legit.

Mark of the Ninja

This game is one hell of a stealth game even though stealth isn't a requirement to finish it, the game awards you with points for being undetected and it feels just so much better if you can complete a level without killing someone and without being detected. Also in each mission there are 3 side quests which unlock you new outfits which can enhance your gameplay.

They've been out for a long time now, even still with the September 8th launch date

As someone pointed out in another thread, buying the Plentiful Paradox pack along with the Pint Sized Pack actually nets you more games than the Plethora of Paradox pack, including the excellent Sword of the Stars, a must for 4X space game fans.

I'd wait for Dark Souls: Prepare To Die Edition ($7.49). I bought it and I love it, but you need a controller since it's a straightforward port, but also if you're not into first person action RPGs, then maybe Bioshock 1 and 2 ($4.99) or Batman Arkham GOTY Pack ($11.49) for action. Then there's Microsoft 5-Game Arcade/Indie Pack ($9.99) if you want to go casual (or just get Mark of the Ninja ($3.75) from it). Some people like The Storming, Burning, Reflecting, Flaming, Sabotaging Pack ($9.99).

If you like strategy games, I'd either look at the Paradox bundles or wait for X-COM and Civ V Gold because I think they'll be cheaper later this month. Oh, and there's the Sonic Action Pack ($9.99) if you like platformers. I don't myself, but Generations make it a great deal for $10.

It actually isn't a scam! The Heroes of the storm purchase as you can see from this amazon link (hopefully this doesn't get deleted) actually comes with five heroes: Sonya, Zeratul, Zagara, Li Li, and Jaina as well as the Ronin Zeratul Skin and the Golden Tiger mount. That edition is the only way to get the golden tiger mount.

You can probably find it by itself as well.

Start with Fallout 1, of course! The actions of the Vault Dweller are really important to the overall plot of the later games. Do make sure you play through Fallout 2 as well though, because gameplay-wise it improves on everything started by the first. New Vegas has SO MANY references to Fallout 1 and 2 that are really easy to miss if you haven't played them.

I also am running Windows 7 64 bit, and had no problems that a quick google search wasn't able to solve. I think there were a couple problems here and there with color conversion, but there are easy-to-use mods available to fix it.

This is the version I bought, and it runs fine on my machine.

If I'm not mistaken, I think gog.com has them for cheap as well, and they're probably optimized even more for a modern OS.

I was under the impression that the boxed copy of Titanfall 2 for PCs didn't include a disc at all due to the size of the game and that it only included an Origin serial key for the game. There's multiple articles on this matter online and an image of the boxed cover also states that apparently.

Some of my favorites...

• The Baldur's Gate series by BioWare and its spin-offs built on the same engine. You can get them all in a $20 DVD-ROM here. An early precursor to Dragon Age.
  
  
• Neverwinter Nights is the next step from Baldur's Gate, before Dragon Age. Amazon has a cheap box set with all sequels and expansions.

• If you want to get into MMORPGs, World of Warcraft (WoW) is the king for a reason. You can play it, and its copycat Rift, for free up until level 20. Star Wars: The Old Republic is a SW-themed WoW copycat, that plays nothing like the original BioWare Knights of the Old Republic games. Guild Wars is also a favorite... developed by ex-Blizzard peeps, you buy the game retail but don't pay a monthly fee. There's a number of other free-to-play MMOs out there, but they're mostly crap. Also, some pay MMOs are crap, too.
  
  
• Many western RPGs developed for PS3 and 360 play better on the PC (meaning, with higher graphic capabilities and a mod community), including: Dragon Age Origins and 2, Mass Effect series, Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning, Elder Scrolls Oblivion and Skyrim. There's also PC ports of Fable and Jade Empire. You can usually connect a USB Xbox 360 controller if you want gamepad controls.
  
  Good Old Games and Steam are good resources for finding PC classics on the cheap as well as being patched to work on modern PCs (Windows 7 64-bit).

You become a patron as a subscription, and you get daily bonuses that you can utilize to help you. You can look up the patron bonus on their website.

If you're thinking about becoming a patron, the best way is to just buy the physical game for about $10.

The reason is because your free account have limitations, such as, 2 character slots per server, limited 3 bag slots, etc. For comparison, if you want to unlock additional bag slot it will cost you about 840 gems, which is a little over $5. and it's ONLY for that character.

By buying the physical box to get the code (or digital code, but those are hard to find), you'll permanently unlock more character slots, and 5 bag slots for ALL your characters, including future alts (account wide).

In addition to the game code you buy from physical box, you'll also get 30 days patron pass, and loyalty points. This will also enable your ability to use the auction house, which you wouldn't be able to use as free account.

Content-wise, you'll be able to play it all even without subscribing. I wouldn't recommend paying for patron on the regular basis, instead, get the box code, and maybe look to unlock the Soul Storm classes instead.

I'm pretty new to the game myself, so if anything I wrote is wrong, someone will correct me shortly ;)

Actually, I would highly recommend you buy ONE physical copy of a Steamworks game, for example, Skyrim.

If you don't know what a Steamworks game is, it's a system Steam implemented that reassures you that no matter where you buy the game, it'll have a Steam key attached to it. All retail copies of Steamworks games(except a very few) come with a Steam key.

The reason I suggest buying a physical Steamworks game is because if your account ever gets stolen, hacked, etc. you can take a picture of your physical CD key with your email address written on a piece of paper next to it and send it to Steam support and they'll know you are the rightful owner of the account. This is one of the few things that make Steam support know you're the real owner of the account and things will get done A LOT faster.

You only need one game though, Portal 2 is another example. Here is the complete list of games that use Steamworks, you can see if it has a retail version on the right side.

Of course this is only if you are going to be using Steam. You can also buy games from Origin(EA games mostly), GreenManGaming(usually gives you a Steam key 99% of the time), GoodOldGames(DRM free games, usually older titles from the 90's) and the HumbleIndieBundle(DRM free and sometimes gives you Steam keys if you spend over $1).

Well yes that works in theory, but in execution: the boxless, bookless, diskless, versions of COD:MW3 Skyrim and Max Payne 3 are all $60, while the physical versions are the same if not cheaper due to limited shelf space. Granted there is probably some selection bias, these were the three $60 games on the steam storefront.

You can buy the previous version with the cable and the importer tool on Steam to move all the songs from the first game into 2014.

I'm personally waiting for the GOTY edition, what with all the DLC Bethesda like to put into their games and how much they're improved by fan patches.
But I have to admit I was hoping to be tempted out of that plan.

I think Steam is doing a great thing these days (I used to hate it as well) by putting on great sales. Things like that really do stop piracy.

My main thing is, I don't care how many times it's said, the prices of games is unreasonable these days. Plain and simple. "If you can't afford $50-60 for a game, you shouldn't be playing it" is the common response I see on reddit, which is one of the stupidest things I've ever heard, and 9 out of 10 time's it's coming from the voice of people still living with their parents, or single guys with nothing else to spend their money on. Me and the wife make pretty damn good money, but I'm sure as hell not going to budget in a $50 fuckin video game that I will play for a few hours and never again.

So what is to be done about it? PUT SALES ON GAMES THAT ARE ALREADY MAKING MILLIONS IN PROFIT.

Why not put them on sale within a few weeks of coming out? Games like Skyrim are already garunteed to make a shit ton of money, so I don't see why more "blockbuster" hits aren't cheaper quicker.

You can buy a boxed copy too though Skyrim uses Steamworks so you'll still need to be logged into Steam at least once to play. And you can mod with either the retail or Steam versions.

Steam Workshop and Nexus Mods will work, even both together. But for stability sake, stick with one or the other. Preferably the Nexus for the better manager and manual mod updates.

You just can't use it at the same time. Give it away and you give away the code too. I'm talking about giving it away not sharing it. I recently picked it up myself. I've played guitar for a long time and it's still a blast. I just like being able to play along to songs I enjoy and actually hearing my success. It's fantastic- especially since I rarely have anyone to jam with anymore.

To keep with the frugality that /u/Merosi and /u/pausemenu point out... If you don't have a cable and are really looking at the long haul, take a look at Rocksmith 1 with a cable.

While sure, it's around $49, the cable will run you ~$30 extra if bought alone, so you're buying RS1 for only $19 (instead of ~$30). There are no Steam keys for The Division. It's a Ubisoft title and as such, all keys you find online will be for the Uplay platform unless bought directly from Steam.

• PC: EVE is a pretty low-stress game on your computer. I can run at max settings in a large battle and maintain about 30 frames. My PC isn't the best, but it was about $1200. You can run what we lovingly call "potato mode" on just about anything.
  
  
• Open world: If you can get there without getting shot, you can get there. On top of that, it's not like WoW where the mobs are going to kill you for wandering into a more dangerous area.
  
  
• No steam. Nooooooooooooooooooo steam. I can't speak to other deals, but if you play this game for a year and pay a $15 sub the whole time, you have to put up with a year of steam to save 5%. You can also get the same deal on Amazon^(1).
  
  
• Reading: EVE-University articles on their Wiki are super helpful. Also, there are a lot of really interesting lore stories out there like the Chronicles. I've honestly only read 3 of them, but they were all good. Inferno was probably my favorite. As for other resources, you can learn a LOT about the game from YouTube. The best EVE video producers are a corp called Rooks and Kings. They are very good at explaining things. I'd personally recommend The Drebuchet, The False Tower, Clarion Call 3, and The Anatomy of a Fight, but the rest of their stuff is good too.
  
  
• Voice: Teamspeak is big in smaller corporations. In giant ones, they kinda have to use mumble just because it supports more users better.
  
  
• American: It's the internet. There are a lot of jackasses. Just don't be annoying and you'll be fine. I'm also an American, but I'm from Minnesota, so that makes me nicer than you.

By buying a stimpack and playing all free week heroes to level 5 you can amass gold pretty quickly to buy some heroes you want.

I started playing after my friends had already been playing for months so I was far behind on owning heroes as well. There was a really cheap deal on amazon for "buying" the game, which came with a handful of heroes. I did that, played them all to 5 along with the free week heroes, and by then I had amassed a bunch of gold so i was able to buy even more. I did this before loot boxes, players doing this now will get a few free heroes along the way from the boxes as well.

There are also several hero bundles with 20 heroes a piece coming on 4/15. No clue what the price will be yet but I'm assuming it will be decent.

It's just a question of if your friend has more money, or time. Despite being "free" to play, the game is going to cost you one of those if your goal is to own a bunch of heroes.

Even if for some reason (i doubt, is one of the best multiplayer experience i had since COD4 [plot twist: they are the same guys =)]) you don't get hooked up by the multiplayer, 12 $ is already VERY worth for the awesome single player campaign.

So that... that is something I do not know in relation specific to Destiny. I was providing that comment as a general statement. But I did go look at the Amazon listing just now and here's what I'm seeing.

• Looking at the one listing I see on Amazon for PC (I did not find two listings as the commenter I replied to stated) I saw, it appears to at least be a physical case being sent as it applied the 20% pre-order discount at checkout for me.
  
• The case art image at the bottom left area says "Download Only, no disc included" which would indicate to me that it is the case where just a download code is included with the case.
  
• There is some conflicting information in the Ask & Answer posted back in May where the page listed the format as "disc," but I do not see that on the product page any more and has likely been removed.
  
• The initial release is recommending having at least 68 GB of free hard drive space. This is honestly massive, and beyond what a dual-layer Blu-ray could store. As such, it actually makes me wonder what they'll be shipping in the console boxes since it seems like the entirety of the base game seems like it won't fit completely on a single disc.
  
  Judging by that, I think it's safe to assume that the PC version will ship with a digital code inside a box. If it really matters to you, definitely don't go just on speculation, though. Try to get confirmation on that from Amazon directly, which may involve waiting closer to release since PC details in particular are sparse at this time.

I don't think you can beat many of the RPG's for depth (in terms of content, immersion, etc) so I'll stick to those.

Baldur's Gate series, Fallout series (the older ones especially!), Icewind Dale series, Dragon Age, Mass Effect - in short, basically anything from Bioware. If I had to choose one among that list it would probably be Baldur's Gate 2 - it isn't easy to convey how deep the game is so just check it out and see for yourself.

A lot of these games I mentioned are older and are available cheaply in collections (talk about value for money!). You may need to do a little bit of tweaking to run them on Vista or Win 7 but it is easy to find directions online with a little bit of searching:

The Orange Box (HL2 + Expansions), Far Cry (trust me on this one it is actually a decently long FPS that can be quite engaging and tactical), Crysis (if you have a strong enough PC to run it, you'll find it offers some very intense and involved firefights).

The only Storm Legion content that is not free is the Storm Legion Souls. This includes Tactician, Harbinger, Defiler, and Tempest. I think it's something like $15-$20. Alternatively, you can trade platinum in-game for REX. The rate is roughly 1100 platinum for 1 REX, which equates to 1250 credits. 2 REX should be enough to buy the souls.

There aren't many boxed copies of storm legion left and judging by the amazon listing they don't come with extra bonuses such as bag slots and character slots, and it's far overpriced compared to just buying the souls.

There are other retail versions such as standard edition and Ashes of History which do include bonuses, but not the storm legion souls (The keys I linked say EU but also work for US).

Buy the game for 13.00 from Amazon. It give you 6 character slots per shard, extra bag slots, and a 30 day patron pass. Otherwise if you bought them separately with store credits it would cost way more than 13.00. You can grab rift on Amazon for about $9 USD (free shipping). So, I wouldn't pay much more than that. You'll get the additional bag slots as well as character slots. Keep in mind, the last two bag slots can only be unlocked with credits.

On the other hand, Storm Legion will only get you the new souls, nothing else. If you are a patron, Storm Legion costs 3,150 credits. You can get 3,250 credits for $20. Last I checked, actual boxes of SL were going for about $20, but they've been pulled from Amazon. It might be more worth your time to unlocked it through credits, you'll have some left over credits and a nice bonus of loyalty.

Assuming that you enjoy the leveling / story part of MMOs:

• I had a lot of fun playing Rift from 1 - 60; the last five levels are okay, but the first zone was so painful, I only did it once. Once you know if you like it or not, it's worth buying $5 worth of credits or picking up an old boxed copy to lift some of the FTP restrictions (and if you go with the boxed copy, you get a month of subscription status for about $5).

I think the only two strong counterexamples you have there are Portal 2 and Skyrim.

Dragon Age: Origins had far less hype and fewer expectations than Dragon Age 2, although the reviews for that game are very flatly mediocre -- no signs of a giant 1-star outrage.

Saints Row has 60 reviews. It was obviously not very much anticipated or talked abut.

Edit: Did some more various digging. According to steamgamesales, $15 is tied for the lowest price for this game. Also, as the Mac Game Store rep mentioned below, this game will in fact work on PC.

Edit: More digging. To play Rocksmith 1 songs on Rocksmith 2, you have to buy the disc import tool which is $10. You need to own both games for it to work. I also think that you need that tool to play Rocksmith 1 DLC on Rocksmith 2.

Also, based on some price history research, DLC, amps, and the tool will go on sale for black friday. That seems to be the sale that everything went on sale for. There have been some sales in the summer and the winter, but black friday is the main one. Wait for DLC for that sale.

From what I've heard people say, the best option is to buy the original Rocksmith game that comes with the cable. It's not cheaper but it's nearly the same price as getting the standalone cable. Right now it's $36 on Amazon or if you have an X360/PS3 or even want to sell the game and keep the cable it's currently going for $30 for the X360/PS3 version. The standalone cable is rarely ever sold less than $30, so unless you want to buy it used, purchasing the original Rocksmith is your best option.
Also, if you purchase Rocksmith for PC for another $10 you can purchase the Disc Import Tool from Steam which allows Rocksmith songs to import into Rocksmith 2014. But I would wait until the Winter sale to purchase the Import Tool.

I got one, new, on amazona bout a couple of years back or so when the rocksmith 2014 remaster was still pretty new but I did have to buy the license transfer on steam was all and got the disc itself (used the code inside on steam) for around 12 or 13 bucks iirc. It may be much harder to find by now, though. but steam winter sales are coming up and I think it usually goes on sale as well as most of the songs. I also got my 2014 remastered from amazon the same, so I could get the cable with it.

Edit: Good lord it's pretty expensive now, probably from being discontinued on this version along with renewed interest in the 2014 since the remaster and larger amount of music available now. I would only trust anew copy, as you have to use the key inside it on steam and a used copy, would have been used probably. And steam keys can't be transferred. Steam winter sale is probably your best option.

Two things come to mind, I believe the issue you're having is the 2nd:

1. The address you're using must be a US one.
   
   
2. If you're trying to upgrade a trial account you have to purchase a starter pack and not simply gametime.

As for your direct questions, f2p. It provides you permanent benefits, such as more bag and character slots, along with a free month of patronage. Keep in mind, the link (at the time of posting) was only about $8, which is far cheaper than the monthly patron cost of $15 for one month.


As outlined in my guide, you are always allowed to select different soul paths from what the purpose guides provide. The guides are basically to help people understand a bit about the souls and what is possible, you are never required to follow them blindly. If you feel that one choice is going to better suite what you want, then by all means, choose what you want. There's a few sections of my guide that explain this in better detail. As well as explaining that you can purchase additional roles to allow you to have more options as you continue to play.


As for souls, you need to understand some different terms. First, souls are combined to form roles. Those roles determine how the dungeon finder sees you. The default 8 souls provided by the game allow you to customize your character, so that you can be pretty much anything within 3 out of 4 roles in the dungeon finder. As a warrior, that leaves you with souls that make you into either a tank, dps, or support, but you have to purchase a soul pack in order to have a soul appropriate for healing. Each archetype is missing a soul that makes them into either a tank, healer, or support, but every archetype can be a dps, without paying for the soul packs. More details on that in the guide.

Subscription is $15/mo with the first month free, discounts if you buy 3 or 6 months in advance. You can also get free months if you recruit new players or "resurrect" players who haven't played in a long time, and sometimes you can find 60 day game time cards on sale as they're fairly ubiquitous.

The trial version is nice if you want to play around with the game, but unfortunately you can't join guilds or chat with anyone that doesn't interact with you first. Give it a whirl at least, and try the dungeon finder when you hit level 15. You can either buy digital upgrades or use boxed copy codes to upgrade from a trial account.

There are 4 xpacs, Burning Crusade, WotLK, Cataclysm, and Mists of Pandaria. Burning crusade and Wrath of the Lich King come in the $20 battle chest, Cataclysm is $20, and Pandaria is $40. However these are retail prices and there are often sales (one for Pandaria direct from Blizzard just ended, sadly), and you don't really need these xpacs to start out unless you REALLY want your first character to be a panda or a goblin. The base set will keep you busy for a while leveling your first character or two especially if you're new to the game. I may be able to get a limited number of free xpac codes as well if one is having trouble buying all the expansions and has endeared themselves to the guild :3

So, Bing, as a search engine, is pretty desperate in attracting people to use their service. With Google as their major competitor, they have resorted to actually paying people to use their search engine.
