Three of the top four videos (as of right now) in this post were all directed by Spike Jonze. Get the DVD set, it's worth it.

That's just how it is. Believe it or not, Funimation's prices are actually pretty decent. Sentai is similarly priced.

If you really want to shit your pants, go look at Aniplex USA or Ponycan USA releases. Kill La Kill BD Volume 1. Release date: July 15, 2014. Episodes 1-4. ONE THROUGH FUCKING FOUR. $40.00 USD. "Oh that's just the MSRP direct from the walletfuckers, it'll be cheaper from other retailers." Nope and [Amazon link unavailable because Amazon doesn't even carry it].

You paid $30 for Steins;Gate because you bought it when they released the whole thing branded as an anime classic. I know this, because that's when I bought it. That was a rerelease. The original was offered as two split cours that came out a few months apart and each had prices higher than the classic bundle.

This is what Funimation and Sentai do, with few exceptions:

  1. Series will release in 12-13 episode "chunks" (what typically constitutes a season, or what we refer to as a "cour") at about a $60.00 MSRP but then after discounts, promotions, and retailer price adjustments, it drops down to the $40-46 range. Fun fact: Even most publishers rarely charge their full MSRP directly from their own store, because it's a customer-baiting mechanic to list a higher price and then make it look like you're offering a discount, even if that discount is permanent.
  2. Then, once the initial sell-through dies off, if the series was popular enough (or not) it will get heavily discounted in a variety of ways depending on the publisher. Funimation has two different tactics, one of them is the "Anime Classics" label, like that above-linked Steins;Gate or the Spice & Wolf pack. The other option is the "Super Amazing Value Edition" which is a rerelease covered in god-awful "SAVE" branding and, typically, a $20.00 or less price point. Robotics;Notes initially had two separate cour releases, then a SAVE version came out literally years later. Thankfully, all of the SAVE editions have reversible case covers, so you can at least hide that ugly green-striped packaging.

Sentai doesn't really do rereleases, instead they just regularly (but only temporarily) slash the prices of a lot of their old stock. They have a decent sale going on now, but a few months back they had drastically cut down the prices on a lot of their content, with some subtitle-only releases going for $15 per season (on BD!) and dubbed releases for $18.

>Is there a GT release in 4:3 native/Funimation Dub/Japanese Music? If so, where could I find it?

Yes. There's an English with Japanese Music option on the Green Brick set.

u/luciferin · 8 pointsr/entertainment

Apparently it's been out since November, and it's only $58!!

u/PurposeDevoid · 8 pointsr/anime

You may know this already, but the high US costs are partially driven by the risk of reverse importation back to Japan (since the US and Japan are the same blu-ray region). By raising the price close to Japan's you mitigate the risk, so low cost versions will never be released until the shows stop selling in Japan. This is also why the UK gets cheaper versions (Madoka Blu-ray complete @~£20=$34) but with almost no bonus features. Things are changing with the recent Gurren Lagann acquisition in the UK, but we mostly get cheap and cheerful

Of course, the fact people buy it at a high price in the US has also got to make them want to keep costs high, and that mostly occurs due to such a large population for a single license region, so they can afford to do it.

u/postblitz · 8 pointsr/anime

here's a cheaper variant or you could move to england. in my opinion it's worth shelling out the money for a series you consider a masterpiece.

before you go wild pirating stuff.. check out Daisuki and Crunchyroll. both have (some)free, legal, hq streaming options. Daisuki i know for sure to have Madoka in full+free and they're 100% legit japanese distributors that work directly with producers.

Someone recently asked if Dragon Ball would ever make it to Bluray. To quote /u/VegettoEX:

>Asked often, but no real updates. For an actual HD release, someone would need to pony up and scan film masters. Right now, that would have to be Toei; FUNimation's current masters are digibeta tapes at best.
I mean, they could do an upscaled release to Blu-ray, but that'd be a lot more trouble than it's worth with their current materials, and if they crop anything else... (insert fist-shaking here)
I would honestly expect to see something from Toei on Dragon Ball and Dragon Ball GT in HD before I would expect to see it from FUNimation.

----

That being said, our FAQ in the sidebar has a list of your options when it comes to purchasing the series.

>##Q: What is the best way to purchase the anime?
A: There are many different ways to purchase the anime. While all releases of Dragon Ball and Dragon Ball GT are in their native 4:3 fullscreen aspect ratio, most English releases of Dragon Ball Z were cropped to 16:9 widescreen.

>* For Dragon Ball, your best option is the Blue Brick DVD sets. [4:3 Native]

  • For Dragon Ball Z, your best option is the most recent Bluray set. [16:9 Cropped]
  • For Dragon Ball Z Kai, your best option is most recent Bluray/DVD set. If you prefer Kenji Yamamoto's musical score, you want "Parts 1-4" of the Part set. [4:3 Native]
  • For Dragon Ball GT, your best option is the Green Brick DVD set. [4:3 Native]

    >Other releases include:

    >* The Dragon Ball Z Orange Brick DVD set [16:9 Cropped], which are criticized for their aggressive filtering, over-contrasted colors, automated center crop, and excessive detail loss during scenes with shaky picture.
  • The Dragon Ball Z Dragon Box set [4:3 Native], the now-out-of-print collector's edition which is considered by many to be the best DVD set of the series. Unfortunately, they run around $700 for a complete set on eBay, and don't include the American broadcast score.
  • The Dragon Ball Z Bluray Level Sets [4:3 Native], the now-cancelled Bluray set which was praised for its faithful colors, grain preservation and original 4:3 aspect ratio.
  • The Dragon Ball Z "Rock The Dragon" set [4:3 Native], which contains all 53 episodes of the original Ocean Group dub.
u/FatNigger69 · 7 pointsr/dbz

There's a full color release of the entire manga over in Japan. Viz completely fucked us over by cancelling their English release. In regards to reading right to left, you get used to it very quickly. Flipping artwork is just as bad as cropping the anime.

As for whether or not the Blurays are worth it, I'd say they are. They're less than ideal, but we're probably not going to get a better product any time soon considering Funimation cancelled the amazing level sets.

u/BulmaBriefs · 5 pointsr/dbz

Officially, there are the cancelled level sets, but they are incomplete.

For complete, you'll have to collect the DVD singlets from 1999, which is a daunting task. They are not numbered, you will have to find them by title.

Unfortunately, 4:3 Faulconer is a pain if you don't want to go the free route.

u/TyroKith · 5 pointsr/dbz

There's only one way that I know of to buy pre-Z Dragon Ball uncut and in its entirety. You'll want to pick yourself up the Blue Bricks. The quality isn't terrible compared to the Orange Bricks. Don't forget about the movies.

For Z, you'll definitely want to avoid the Orange Bricks. The only good thing about this release is that it finally made Dragon Ball Z easy to buy without collecting endless DVDs. But the picture is botched up beyond being saved, and it's cropped to widescreen. Ideally you'd want to purchase the Dragon Boxes, but they're out-of-print and cost a pretty penny. Maybe check eBay if you're interested. You're probably going to want to go with the latest Blu-Ray releases. They're still cropped like the Orange Bricks, but they're a superior overall product even if they still aren't up to par with what we should be getting. Pick up the movies and Battle of Gods too.

GT is pretty simple. Buy the Green Brick. Like the pre-Z Blue Brick, the "remastering" didn't destroy the integrity of the product. It also comes with the one GT TV special. Yay!

And if you're interested in what order you should watch all this, check out our guide.

But the US DVD/Blu-Ray of Planet Earth used Attenborough's voice. The Weaver version was only shown on TV.

At least, the version I bought at Best Buy in Chicago has Attenborough's narration.

Also: DVD / Blu-Ray - Not an import, it's Region 1/Region A for the US market, but it's only available online.

Amazon's gotten into the tv business by filming original series. They've recently put up several pilot episodes for people to watch and then vote on whether they should be picked up for a whole series. If they are picked up for a series, then Amazon will produce it and release it through their streaming service.

They've done this already with a couple of shows.

I quite enjoyed the pilot of Man in the High Castle. I thought the world was believable and the effects were very well done. Some people seem to really hate it, but I think they're a definite minority.

You can watch the episode here, even if you don't have a Prime subscription.

This is a wonderful video, and simply one of many by Spike Jonze.

While these collection don't begin to cover all of them, I recommend the Director's Series DVD sets that feature Spike Jonze and others. The two packages that are most relevant to this convo are http://www.amazon.com/Directors-Vol-Director-Spike-Jonze/dp/B0000AZT2X and http://www.amazon.com/Directors-Label-Boxed-Set-Cunningham/dp/B00065AXTM/. The first is just Spike Jonze, while the second is a boxed set that also includes videos by Chris Cunningham and Michel Gondry.

And at the risk of veering off-topic, check out the DVDs in the same series that include Mark Romanek's videos.

What's bizarre is it doesn't even seem like it was a choice by the US public, who seem fine with understanding Attenborough:

The Amazon reviews thoroughly slate the decision..

u/Nickolaus · 3 pointsr/dbz
  • The Blue Brick set are the best release for Dragon Ball. Unless you're wanting to spend more money on getting the Japanese Dragon Box sets, which won't really do you any good... Reason being they are in Japanese. This kind of release would be really only for someone who is really big into the series. The reward of having these would really only be for bragging rights and/or the enjoyment of a hand-done remastering of the series.

  • The Dragon Ball movie four pack is using the same remastering process as the Blue Brick set did. It's going to visually remain the same. The better visual release would be the Dragon Box movie set... but you still run into the problem with it being in Japanese.

  • If Funimation actually finished the level sets before deeming they were too expensive, that would have been the better release to get. However, for what you're wanting (The Faulconer Productions' OST) then the blu-ray sets are perfectly fine. No need in suggesting the Dragon Box set because the English set does not include that soundtrack.

  • Both the Revival 'F' and the Battle of Gods releases are good. They look the same visually, unless you're using the DVD only discs.

  • The best release you can get for Dragon Ball GT. The Dragon Box set was not released in English, so there is no point in suggesting that either.

    > Does anyone have comparison pictures of the the DVD Movie Packs vs the Blu Ray Double Features?

I only own the Dragon Box DVD Movie set. It would be a bit unfair to compare those, but if you're wanting to see that comparison, then I'll do it. Although what you're going to be expecting from the DVD set and the blu-ray set is only sharper imaging from the blu-ray set.
u/vinnycthatwhoibe · 3 pointsr/dbz

Dragon Ball is available on DVD on these blue sets http://www.amazon.com/Dragon-Ball-Season-One/dp/B002FOQXTQ

Dragon Ball Z is available in it's entirety on DVD on similar sets but they are fairly awful quality (fake widescreen, heavy filtering applied, etc) http://www.amazon.com/Dragon-Ball-Season-Vegeta-Saga/dp/B000KWZ1TI

Dragon Ball GT is available in a single DVD set
http://www.amazon.com/Dragon-Ball-GT-Sean-Schemmel/dp/B0063RE4X8

They've released the Dragon Ball Z movies on blu-ray, and Dragon Ball Z Kai is available on blu-ray, and they've started and stopped releasing the series previously with the Level 1.1 and Level 1.2 sets (no longer available). It looks like they are going to try releasing it on blu-ray AGAIN though http://www.amazon.com/Dragon-Ball-Blu-ray-Sean-Schemmel/dp/B00F9IB1M4

I wouldn't hold my breath though. Funimation likes to start releasing a set and then cancel halfway through. Plus from what I'm reading it's the same garbage quality as the orange brick sets, only it's the 1080p version of it.

I feel like someone here just wanted to brag about how awesome his French collector's edition is... but sure, I'll bite. :)

I've got two editions. First is the Australian DVD release, which is the full series on 4 dvds. Absolutely nothing special about it, plus the box art is not my favourite - to me it hints at furry fanservice which is not really my liking... Sanity Plus, Madman tend to have awful yellow subs on all their dvds.

Other one is the American blu-ray/dvd combo, It's heaps better, much better art, and the subs are much nicer too. Plus I love it when the BD/DVD are released in the same box. I got it half price than just the Aussie dvd's, second hand but still in the shrink wrap from some dude who was selling a bunch of his anime. Amazon

Yours is still far superior! I'm not aware of any special editions in English.

None of the rebuilds are available to legally stream, anywhere.

(The rest of this comment only pertains to US releases)

1.11, 2.22, 3.33, are each available on Amazon:

1.11, 2.22, 3.33

You can also find them at Walmart, Best Buy, and Funimation's website, among other places.

u/AbundantToaster · 2 pointsr/anime

In general, RightStuf has some nice deals, or you could try Amazon.

More specifically, here's Bebop for $30. Can't find Blu-Rays of Gankutsuou, but here's a DVD set. Summer Wars is here. Try this for Black Lagoon, but there's also a collector's edition here. Evangelion 2.22 here. Haruhi here, but as a pre-order and at an absurd price.

I can only find Madoka, Perfect Blue, Baccano, Code Geass, and Fate/Zero at prices you probably don't want to pay.

u/jsully · 2 pointsr/evangelion

I purchased both 1.11 and 2.22 (these exact ones) from Amazon and they are both are as you describe: 1.11 is metallic and 2.22 has an orange fold-out slipcover with a standard BD case inside.

That's a lot of Dragon Ball. Well, actually, that's pretty much all of it since the other "missing" DVDs are actually in your Blu-ray collection. Nicely complete. Looks like in November you and I will both be buying Dragon Ball Z again.

u/Terez27 · 2 pointsr/dbz

Your submission has been removed for the following reason:

>This topic is addressed in our FAQ. See the link for more details about the different dub versions and soundtracks.

There are many different ways to purchase the anime. While all releases of Dragon Ball and Dragon Ball GT are in their native 4:3 fullscreen aspect ratio, most English releases of Dragon Ball Z were cropped to 16:9 widescreen. All home releases except for the "Dragon Box" and "Rock the Dragon" sets offer three soundtrack options: Japanese with original soundtrack, English dub with original soundtrack, and English dub with Funimation's replacement soundtrack. (There is no Funimation soundtrack for Kai or Super.)

  • For Dragon Ball, your best option is the Blue Brick DVD sets. [4:3 Native]
  • For Dragon Ball Z, your best option is the most recent Blu-ray set [16:9 Cropped]
  • For Dragon Ball Kai, your best option is most recent Blu-ray/DVD set. If you prefer Kenji Yamamoto's musical score, you want "Parts 1-4" of the Part set. [4:3 Native]
  • For Dragon Ball GT, your best option is the Green Brick DVD set. [4:3 Native]

    Other releases include:

  • The Dragon Ball Z Orange Brick DVD set [16:9 Cropped], which are criticized for their aggressive filtering, over-contrasted colors, automated center crop, and excessive detail loss during scenes with shaky picture.
  • The Dragon Ball Z Dragon Box set [4:3 Native], the now-out-of-print collector's edition which is considered by many to be the best DVD set of the series. Unfortunately, they run around $700 for a complete set on eBay, and don't include the American broadcast soundtrack.
  • The Dragon Ball Z Blu-ray Level Sets [4:3 Native], the now-cancelled Blu-ray set which was praised for its faithful colors, grain preservation and original 4:3 aspect ratio.
  • The Dragon Ball Z "Rock The Dragon" set [4:3 Native], which contains all 53 episodes of the original Ocean Group dub.

If you prefer a stream, you can watch the series on several online services including FUNimation. Streams are available subbed or dubbed, but both versions will feature the original Japanese soundtrack.

If you have any questions, see our extended rules. If you believe this removal was made in error, you can appeal to the moderating team.
u/Taiboss · 2 pointsr/MadokaMagica

I belive it has, otherwise there wouldn't be dub. I only found a UK release, however.

u/drnoooooo · 2 pointsr/MadokaMagica

If you want to "finally support my favorite series" then there's no way around buying them new. They don't earn a single cent from your used purchase.

The Japanese series Blu-rays don't have english subtitles, only the 3 movies do.
So if you insist on having english subtitles on the Blu-ray then you'll have to get the US or UK version.

The UK version is available cheap as a complete set but it won't work on US players:

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Puella-Madoka-Complete-Collection-Blu-ray/dp/B008MJRO6O/

The US version is only available as 3 separate Blu-rays, each twice as expensive as the complete UK version:

http://www.amazon.com/Puella-Magi-Madoka-Magica-Blu-ray/dp/B00771V6OY/

http://www.amazon.com/Puella-Magi-Madoka-Magica-Blu-Ray/dp/B007S0PJTW/

http://www.amazon.com/Puella-Magi-Madoka-Magica-Blu-ray/dp/B0089X92LI/

It's simpler with Rebellion. There's only the Japanese Blu-ray available yet so you only have two decisions to make. Standard or limited and where to purchase from.

You can also search on play-asia, yesasia and the likes to see if they offer it and what they charge. Don't forget to inform yourself about possible import taxes of your country.

u/by_a_pyre_light · 2 pointsr/movies

Adult Swim has all of the episodes for free on their website. This is Season 1, Episode 9 (season 2 hasn't come out yet).

If you can't view it there, you could get a cheap VPN like Foxy Proxy, pick a US VPN, and then watch it. I actually got a Canadian one for SEO purposes - it's about $7 per month and much, much faster than crappy free ones.

The cheapest complete series I highly recommend watching is Samurai Champloo. For ~$25, it's a relatively good deal.

u/dangersandwich · 1 pointr/tf2trade

Allow me to take the shotgun approach, seeing as how you didn't give us much information about what she likes:

If she likes anime: Totoro is pretty cool or something a little more 'traditional'. Maybe buy her an anime series box set.

If she likes jewelry: Stuff from here or here

If she likes art: This is a great book or perhaps some designer toys? Also, art prints are fantastic too, though you will have to buy the print and frame it (fragile).

If she likes music: Buy her an album that she doesn't own. If she is an audiophile and uses a record player, than buy it in the form of an LP if possible.

Also, it is October and she is in Germany (i.e. Oktoberfest), so if she likes beer then buy her a German stein or something similarly themed.

u/birdy_the_scarecrow · 1 pointr/Piracy

While i cant say for sure what it is, I can tell you what it is not.

It's Widescreen, so this excludes the Dragon Box and Blu-Ray "Level Sets"(discontinued before finishing) because they are 4:3.

Audio is clearly the "Remaster" or "Funi V2" (post singles release).

If i had to take a guess id say this came from Either the Orange Bricks or the Blu-ray Release

One other possibility is the more obscure "Ultimate Uncut" version which was discontinued before finishing also, however i don't think its this version because it usually comes pared with a unique intro rather then the japanese one.

It shouldn't be to hard to tell if its the Orange Brick version with a little searching, its rather notorious for having bad cropping to fit the widescreen format (the blurays apparently do a more selective and thus better job at this).

This is why most people praise the Dragon Box version and were rather upset that the Level Sets got canceled in favor of the Cropped/Widescreen Blu-Rays.

They are set at a really good price and Shout Factory have been doing an amazing and consistent job with them and their release. Rocko's Modern Life
along with Angry Beavers are the complete sets out right now, with Aaah! Real Monsters coming out in a couple of months. CatDog, Hey Arnold, The Wild Thornberrys have/pretty much finished their individual series runs so a complete series release is imminent. Do you know any of the anime/manga that she's into? Girl-positive content would generally push people towards shoujo manga, but I know some girls prefer manga with bad-ass female leads that aren't obsessed with romance, as in the style of Kill La Kill.

Soul Eater...Blu-ray, complete series in English

Noragami...Blu-ray, season 1 in English

Spice and Wolf...Blu-ray, complete series in English

I'd probably recommend Soul Eater out of the three, cool female protagonist, action similar to the stuff you listed, long series she'll get longevity out of, and it's pretty good to boot. All three I think she'd enjoy though...of course if none of those seem right for her you could go the more conventional route and get her the first few seasons of One Piece since it seems to be universally adored. Hope this helped!

Daredevil was amazingly well done for a superhero show on Netflix. Also, "Man in the High Castle" is an interesting series about if the Axis powers had won WWII. It's based on Phillip K. Dick's novel of the same name.

u/AzraelNewtype · 1 pointr/thegrandtour

Yeah, it turns out my TV had it right up front, rather than the standard version. I wanted to add it to my watchlist from the computer, but since it was featured it didn't matter much. In fact, being on a HDR capable set had everything from Amazon defaulting to the UHD bannered versions. In case you haven't tried fighting this yourself though, observe:

https://www.amazon.com/Man-High-Castle-Season/dp/B00RSGIVVO
vs
https://www.amazon.com/Man-High-Castle-Season-Ultra/dp/B00RZYUJN2

It makes it annoying to do list manipulation on something with a keyboard, but technically doable since the apps know what you can do and pick for you.

Anyway, yes, this show does look amazing in the full HDR glory.

>SyFy doesn't get any money from Netflix, Amazon...

That's just so gloriously wrong.

SyFy is, right or wrongly known for 'Sharknado' and that sort of shite TV. I long ago gave up on them.

Let's break this down.

  • SyFy makes money from advertising revenue (I'll come back here in a sec)

  • SyFy needs viewers for those advertisers, hence the ratings you pointed out.
  • SyFy puts their show on Netflix/ Prime season 1 for free, the new season you have to pay (that's money that they make by the way but not the point I'm making so I'll let you not count all that money...(which btw I know 3 different people that have paid for season 2as they are 'unplugged' and don't get SyFy... but I digress)
  • I watched Season 1 for 'free' on prime last week.
  • GUESS what I'm doing for season 2 now that I've caught up? Go ahead I'll wait. That's right. I am watching it when is airs or shortly after, with those ads etc.

Just for reference. "The Expanse: Season 2" is $24.99 on Amazon and $29.99 on iTunes... that would be a bit more than '...doesn't get any money from...'

Again none of this takes into account how much the world has changed since FarScape was canceled. Game of Thrones and other shows would have NEVER survived 15 years ago.. hell they would never have been made or given the opportunity.
