I have a vornado at my desk - I use this one: https://www.amazon.com/Vornado-Zippi-Personal-Fan-Ice/dp/B000E19MQ8/ref=sr_1_9?keywords=vornado%2Bdesk&qid=1569264640&s=home-garden&sr=1-9&th=1

It doesn't have the variable speed like OP requested, but it is SUPER quiet and gets the job done.

u/mrsic187 · 13 pointsr/INEEEEDIT

Heres the one I>I don't normally condone buying the stuff I see in this sub... But this thing is a whole nother level. I own a bed jet, which is either the last Model version of the item in the gif or a different brand all together. I bought it on Amazon for about $450. It was by far the best money I've ever spent in my entire life. It has an app that lets you control the temperature, anywhere from 72 degrees to 104 degrees Fahrenheit. The turbo heat portion alone changed everything with jumping into a cold bed and being able to immediately make it warm or vice versa.
>
>Anyway, what I'm saying is this is totally worth the money.

>BedJet V2 Climate Comfort for Beds, Cooling Fan + Heating Air with Biorhythm Sleep Technology (Single Temperature Zone Any Size Mattress) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01BMCWJ7G/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_nSB9AbGMH6FXB

Heres the one Ican afford

Comfort Zone 6 Inch Clip-On Fan | Great for Table Tops, Night Stands and anywhere you need Light https://www.amazon.com/dp/B000U9V47E/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_5jD9AbPCPXZ12

Absolutely, here we go:

Essential Hardware

$80 Clones - $20 from dispensary.

$325 Lights: Horticulture Lighting Group 260 QB LED Kit

  • I cannot say enough about these lights. I had to run them anywhere from 50-75% during veg to prevent light burn. Great coverage for a 2x4 tent. Nothing but praise 10/10 would buy again.

    $70 2' x 4' x 5' Mylar tent

  • Holding up well, easy build. Is not 100% dark, light leaks outwards from spots along the zipper and pinholes but no light leak into the tent during dark.

$90 4" Inline duct fan and Carbon Filter

  • This puppy can SUCK, I have to keep it on the lowest setting to prevent the pressure inside the tent from dropping (need to work on my passive intake next grow). Carbon filter works great. Lowers humidity in a pinch.

    $10 - Ducting/Clamps from ACE

    $21 Osculating Fan

  • I have it on a small stand and osculating 24/7. It pushes air, not a jet engine though.

    Already on hand: Box Fan

  • Had one from years ago. Sometimes I open the tent and blast this on high right on level with the buds just go shake out the leaves, gets a bit crowded in the scrog and I'd like to eliminate any humidity caught between leaves sticking together. Think you can scoop one from Walmart for like $15 bucks, $20 max.

    $25 [Humidifier] (https://www.walmart.com/ip/Sunbeam-Warm-Mist-Humidifier-SWM6000-BWM/32664862)

  • This puppy does well. I use the first setting, usually can run 16+ hours on a full reservoir of H20. No filter which keeps cost down, just need to clean it one or twice a week with a brush for the hard water deposits. 5-10 minute process.

    $45 Dehumidifier

  • This was a bit of a mistake purchase. I wanted to test and see if a small model offered on amazon (this looked to be one of the best for sub $50, and has the biggest holding tank out of them all) could put in any kind of noticeable work in a tent. What I noticed is that it will be able to roughly maintain humidity at times, after I run the exhaust fan to lower the levels. When the lights are out and the temperature drops, this thing has no chance. Go with a full size dehumidifier or rely on the dry Colorado air + passive intake + duct fan. I was struggling with humidity issues during the cold of the winter, now that I can have my windows open my ambient room humidity is usually 40% or below.

$18 4" inline duct booster fan

  • Also a mistake purchase. Does not move a lot of air. Had plans to use this for an airflow/passive (not) intake system but it's not worth the electricity cost to run this thing. I'd stay away.

    $13 Ph Meter

    $12 TDS PPM meter

$9 Soil Moisture, Light, Ph meter - Does it's job

    $9 Ph Control Kit

    $14 Ph Calibration solution

  • For the life of the Ph meter, I store the tip in 7.0 solution that I pour into the cap. Good to have on hand for calibration.

$6 Spray Bottles (Did not use these much, only very early during transplanting.)

$7 for 30ct Starter grow bags

  • Do not recommend, breathe terribly, water stagnates even with modifications. Had to feed lightly and often, and really monitor dampness. Needed these for the outdoor garden anyways)

    $18 Hygrometer for Temp/Humidity

  • Worth it to get the wireless monitor so you're not opening the tent all the time)

$8 for 6ct 5 gal Smart Pot knockoff

  • Do their job, hold up well. I cut the handles off to make watering under the scrog easier.

$40 - Soil: Two bags of Happy Frog. Ocean forest was sitting around.

    Nutrients: $165

  • I have a local grow shop that I purchased a lot of these from. The 1 litre Cyco nutrient bottles ranged from $10-$18 and I have 7 different nutrients - call that $100 after tax.

  • Grow A, Grow B, Bloom A, Bloom B, Dr Repair, Potash, Silica

  • I purchased Key to Life - Uptake For just shy of $20. Great for calcium uptake.

  • Cyco Grow XL Super Phosphoric Acid was $45 - not cheap for 100ml but I think the potential yield improvement will cover that cost, especially over 3-4 grows which I expect to get out of the bottle.

$13 - Scrog net: for something like 50-100ft of plastic garden fence from Home Depot. Using a lot of it for a garden.

$15 - Miscelaneous: Eyedroppers, duct tape, zip ties, and odds and ends: Call it $15.

So to total that all out we're looking just over 1000 that I spent, could have kept it under $950 if I had not purchased the small duct fan or dehumidifier. Also: Soil and nutrients for $205. Could work that down to under $150 by dropping a couple unnecessary yet desirable nutrients.

Sorry for the formatting! I'm going to do a big post write up and this is a great place to start at least. Thanks for the motivation.

> i basically just need a light and thats it? if i want to grow autoflower only

oh boi... alright here we go.

youll need duct fans for both ventilation and heat dissipation, especially if you go with HPS/MH lights 600/1000watts will require reflectors with ducting so you can connect to it. This will need to exhaust out of your tent. Then you will need a intake fan coming preferably from outside. Youll most likely also need a Carbon filter attached in series to your exhaust fan. Your light will have a ballast as well, which creates a good amount of heat so plan for that to be located outside your tent. Youll also need smaller fans in the corners so you can keep a good air circulation going (hurricane fans are great). Also consider using T5 lights when starting your seeds off as your higher wattage lights are not good for seedlings. Also get a few supplies like gorilla tape and duct clamps and anything else you might need to secure everything together.

When it comes to growing, even if you are only doing autos youll need smart pots, fertilizer, promix HP, perlite plus both vegging and flowering nutrients. Have access to PH up and down solution, and also get a Ph Pen + PPM meter (TDS).

Ive only linked amazon, there are probably other local options for you.

u/DLFamily · 9 pointsr/talesfromtechsupport

they do make stand up drain free AC units Something like this I would assume their is a drop ceiling that you should be able to vent to. IMO this is how to get AC to center of building on the cheap.

u/remdos · 9 pointsr/slatestarcodex

A whole house humidifier.

For the last two years my hands have been so dry in the winter the skin has started peeling.

I bought a bluetooth humidity/temperature monitor (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01AEQ9X9I), which showed me a low of 12% humidity in my and my wife's bedroom during winter. I bought this humidifer https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B004S34ISA/ which raised the whole apartment's humidity to ~35%. Requires daily water refills and a biweekly filter change. I use it from Jan-April. When I buy a house I will buy a humidifier that hooks up directly to the house's heater.

Since buying the humidifier I have experienced no dry skin problems during the winter.

u/Highfro · 8 pointsr/Gameboy

take the top off and set it on a heat source to soften up the glue

i use a radiating heater like this https://www.amazon.com/DeLonghi-EW7507EB-Filled-Radiator-Heater/dp/B004BZFQB8

i set the cartridge face down ontop with a microfiber cloth beneath it. It will take some time to learn the right temperature to use so id suggest practicing on a tetris cartridge.

then i use a newish utility blade to slowly lift up one corner being careful not to make any creases or bend it to much. If it doesn't come off easily it wasn't warmed up enough

I survived the 2000 fires in Missoula, and I couldn't see my neighbors house 20 feet away for nearly a week. Here's a few tips:

  • Stay indoors
  • Seal up doors/windows with tape
  • If you have AC, change/clean the filter often.
  • If your AC has a recirculation mode, use it. This will just recirculate and somewhat filter the indoor air.
  • Buy and use some sort of Air Purifier.
  • If you have to go outside, use a dust mask or bandanna.
  • Drink lots of water, it will help your body remove the smoke from your lungs.

I have and love this Vornado 660 fan. If you understand how it works, i.e. put it in the a place on the floor or a desk and point it to the opposite diagonal corner of the room and turn it on, this thing moves air around the whole room and the room feels cooler because of the constant air movement. It is within your budget, order one and try it out, if you do not like it you can always return it.

u/throwawayCG48 · 6 pointsr/microgrowery

First grow.

This took 2-3 months. Seems like I ran into a number of first-timer pitfalls along the way. Good learning experience though.

Can't wait. So god damn tired of shady, undependable hook ups.

Edit 2:

Photos of my setup.

u/Thornyinfrontbyalot · 6 pointsr/microgrowery

Yes! Many of us have stealth grows. I use a 6" carbon filter hooked up to an inline fan that I pipe through my radon mitigation system from the basement and up through the roof of the house. I maintain negative air pressure in my grow room so no air goes anywhere but through that filter.

I'm guessing you have that shed wired for electricity or you wouldn't be growing there. If you have a stovepipe exhaust on that shed, use that. If not, either install one or use something like a dryer vent out one of the side walls. make sure it is sealed against light leaks

Edit: https://www.amazon.com/VIVOSUN-Australia-Charcoal-Pre-filter-Reversible/dp/B01731MLFK

Double edit: Get the 4" version unless you're running 6" PVC pipe. Finding a 6"->3" coupling was a pain in the dick.

u/IAmAPhysicsGuy · 6 pointsr/Cooking

Best thing I ever got was simply one of these little countertop fans that will simply blow the onion vapors away while I cut, plus it's nice to have some airflow.

u/Panpaan · 5 pointsr/beyondthebump

I’ve used This HEPA during a huge OR fire in my neighboring town. The smoke was so thick you couldn’t see two houses down. It won’t filter a whole house, but will help a room. So if you get 2-3 to use in your most used rooms. At least one where the baby sleeps. This will get much finer particulate, as opposed to the box fans.

u/Belgernon · 5 pointsr/funny

Bed fan

Takes air from near the floor, blows it under the covers. I don't have one, but I bet it's wonderful.

u/VaporizerWizard · 5 pointsr/vaporents

I use a 4x8 inch one of these it is made for growing, and I just hooked a duct fan from Menards to the end of it and leave it laying on its side under the desk plugged in 24/7. I can leave ground up bud on the desk, I keep all my vapes in the room, and I can vape excessively all day long in my room, and the smell still doesn't leave the room :) (Even in the room the smell is VERY muted compared to normal)

I would really suggest you get a Carbon filter, that is the only thing that truly works well imo

u/Zacthor · 5 pointsr/Autoflowers

Get a temp/hygrometer, it'll tell you humidity. Basements are notoriously humid. A dehumidifier can easily fix that. You want it at about 35-40%. Since you recently had it finished it could also be the fresh paint and carpet. You can get a decent air purifier for about $100. Here's what I use after I researched alot: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000050AQ5/ref=oh_details_o08_s00_i00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

I would say that some small clip-on fans would be your best bet in that space. They are nice for size but they push out very little air. If you take this route I recommend you purchase at least 3-4, one for each corner of the tent. Something like this perhaps. http://www.amazon.com/Comfort-Zone-CZ6C-2-Speed-Clip-On/dp/B000U9V47E/ref=sr_1_2?s=home-garden&ie=UTF8&qid=1375201358&sr=1-2&keywords=clip+fan

At the very least I would get a smart radiator heater that is programable and is designed to shut off if there is a surge or anything. I use this in my room all winter long really recommend, had it for a few years now. DeLonghi EW7507EB Oil Filled Radiator Heater Black 1500W

My camp mostly does yurts and I've stayed in one three years in a row. Here's my hottest (coolest?) tips:

  1. Two tarps! One tarp on the bottom that the yurt sits on. In 2014 it rained balls Sunday night and everything, including my bed and rugs got wet. Now I use another tarp on the inside, that I roll up against the sides.

  2. Tape up the outside tarp. In 2015, a huge dust storm kicked up the morning after I got my yurt setup and covered everything inside in dust. Now I also run yurt tape all the way around on the outside tarp to seal it up. Vinyl tape would also work for this. Either way, just be sure to wipe the dust off the tarp and yurt before you tape so you get a good stick. However, all the tape you have holding the roof and wall panels together is unlikely to be totally waterproof. If it rains (which it just did literally yesterday), water will still run down the walls and pool inside, hence the extra tarp inside keeping everything dry.

  3. Secure your yurt immediately. Once you get the roof taped on, tie that thing down right away before it becomes a kite. The halo rope method is popular, though I've switched to ratchet straps so I can easily tighten them and I suck at knots.

  4. Get a fan or a swamp cooler. While the yurt is much cooler during the day than any tent, you should at least have a fan if you want to sleep past 9-10am. This O2COOL 10-inch Portable Fan is a good option and runs on batteries (bring extras to get you through the week). If you have the budget and time to build a swamp cooler, here's an improved version that some engineer friends designed and tested. It's easier to make and is more efficient than the figjam bucket model you usually see.

  5. Invest in a quality air mattress or, if you have space to transport it, a memory foam mattress that you can roll up. I've heard Kelty makes some good air mattresses that don't leak. I've been using some sleeping pads under a decent air mattress. If and when the air mattress deflates the sleeping pads provide extra cushion. I also highly recommend some decent ear plugs and an eye mask (if you're light sensitive).
Sleep is so critical to having a sustained enjoyable Burn so get the best option you can afford and transport.

    Other tips:

  • Get the 6 inch bi-filament tape and order right away because it can take time to get to you. Like right now, if you haven't already ordered.
  • One roll of tape per standard 6' hexayurt is recommended.
  • Use foil tape for making repairs - cover any spots on the panels where the silver coating has come off (especially from where you've had to peel off previous years' tape) to prevent moisture damage.
  • Get a 6' squeegie to help you stick and smooth the tape on the last roof seam.
  • Have 4-6 people available to help hold the walls up (especially with wind gusts) and lift the roof on.

    Enjoy your luxurious accommodations!
u/c0de76 · 3 pointsr/LifeProTips

The only way to get rid of humidity is with an AC unit, a dehumidifier will get rid of moisture in the air but will also act as a heater. If you want to be cooler, at least at night in the FL summer, get a window fan like this. You need two windows in your room. You place the fan and one and open the other so it can pull in or exhaust air. The idea is not to move air across your body to cool you like a room fan, but to constantly exchange the air in your room with fresh air outside. This prevents heat build-up in your room that is inevitable even with the windows open. Or for a bit more money buy a window AC unit.

u/audiophilistine · 3 pointsr/AdviceAnimals

When I was in college the dorm was either arctic cold in the summer or camping-on-the-sun hot in winter. I kept my room comfortable with a thermostat controlled window fan. I highly recommend something like this when you have no control over the thermostat.

u/PoorlyShavedApe · 3 pointsr/NewOrleans

Do you have problems being backlit by your window with that camera?

Also have you see the zippi fan with cloth blades? Great for work desks because you don't need the guard around the blade so you can move it around the desk more easily.

Glad to see somebody else still uses trackballs also.

Some recommendations - from my own experience of fostering 5 birds in a similar condition as yours. Big big big cage, lots of different perch types, and use a towel or sheet to form a backing to part of the cage, to give it some area that it isn't worried about what's behind it. A radio set low on something like jazz or classical through the day will help set it a bit on ease, especially if it is a single bird. Keep him in a nice quiet spot, and I wouldn't even attempt handling for a couple weeks. Through your daily routine it is likely to freak out a little and scurry away. Just move calmly and slowly, just handling the food and water bowls, no sudden movements or grabs/touches, and praise in happy tones, whistle, or imitate whatever sounds it makes.

I also found my foster birds to be quite lacking in nutrition; once they settled in, I began to offer pellets, cuttlebone, Nutri-Berries, and birdy bread (cycled them through). Mine were seed only, but have moved to Rowdybush pellets and destroy a cuttlebone in a couple weeks.

As for dust/bath, when the bird is settled in, you can try light spray/misting, and to encourage the bird to bathe to find a water 'relaxation' device and the sound and sight of the bubbling water will make it do the bathing motions (half-open wings, rubbing head under them), then spray/mist or offer water in a pie dish. Until then, consider an air filtration device like these: http://www.amazon.com/Honeywell-Compact-Purifier-Permanent-HHT-011/dp/B000N9CPQK/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&qid=1395162523&sr=8-4&keywords=honeywell+air+purifier

Best of luck to you and your new buddy!

u/Geawiel · 3 pointsr/PSVR

I got over my sickness with a small clip fan. I clipped it to my coffee table that is always a bit close to me when I play VR. I angled it so that it pointed up on my head and turned it on high. It helps keep me cool (I overheat easily, which turn into migraines) and helped keep the motion sickness down. Before the fan, I couldn't go for more than 30 to 45 mins in Skyrim or Farpoint before the motion sickness and it's other symptoms stacked too high for me to continue. Now I usually do 3 hour sessions in either game. Even without a fan.

u/byttle · 3 pointsr/headphones

DIY yourself a redneck air-conditioner.

Or get a Vornado off amazon. I have one of these

u/growamustache · 3 pointsr/HomeImprovement

Yep. I have this one, and love it. We used it in my office for a couple years, and now have it in our nursery. works great to keep a single room a bit warmer than the rest of the house.

u/teaandlemon · 3 pointsr/SkincareAddiction

Well, I have an enormous console one, because the humidity in my apartment goes to about 33% without a humidifier running. It will happily humidify most of the place to 55% humidity with a fill every 24-36 hours (depending how dry I let it get before I refill it). It holds just shy of 5 gallons, I think, compared to the 1 gallon ultrasonic I used in the bedroom before I got this one, which needed to be filled about every 18 hours for one room. It has a side mounted container for water, so you don't have to shut it off to go fill it, and it holds about two containers worth (one flows down to the bottom with the wick, then you fill it again), so you don't have to haul 5 gallons from the sink to the humidifier.

The wicks are about $12-14 on amazon, depending what the price variation of the day is. It's really easy to install, it's only really noisy when the humidity is way below where it's set to (you can set it anywhere from 35 to 60% if I recall correctly, 50% is best of both worlds for protecting you from flu and mold), and honestly, you can set what the fan speed is at if you don't like auto.

I've been running this almost constantly since Christmas (there was a week that we turned it off 'cause I was trying to dry a bunch of sand), and I've replaced the wick once. I may not have had to replace it if I had emptied it out for that week, but I stupidly left it sitting in the wet chamber, so it got gross.

TL;DR: I apparently have lengthy opinions on humidifiers.

u/thehauntedgod · 3 pointsr/ElectricForest

I'm no physicist, but perhaps the principle of putting it in your car could perhaps apply to putting it in a trash bag and sealing it air tight. As long as you get your stuff in the bag while it's not humid it probably should be good and dry when you open it later in the night.

For while you're sleeping you should try to keep your tent well ventilated. Keep the rain fly open (if it's clear weather of course) and any extra "windows" open as well as a small camp fan to keep air moving. This will help move your breath moisture out of the tent. However the very very humid Michigan nights will keep everything quite moist until the sun rises. Alternatively, just stay awake until the sun rises then you don't have to worry about the humid nights :)

Okay 4 plants with good genetics can yield just as much weed as 6 plants with lesser genetics.

So here is what I recommend.

Tent: 4x4 minimum with 5x5 preferred because it gives you room to walk in the tent which saves your back and also gives you room for extra equipment inside the tent, buy Vivosun they are good quality and have excellent zippers.

Is there anything else I can help you with?

u/leonardskinner33 · 3 pointsr/JAHSeeds

This is my first time growing, so please feel free to critique/rip into my setup, as I really appreciate all the help and knowledge! I actually ordered my seeds from JAHseeds a year ago, but never got my shit together enough to actually do anything with them.

I do want to take a quick moment to thank u/AFK_ing for the seeds first, as they were actually gifted to me for free. I placed an order on a whim one night, and then completely forgot about it. Turns out that JAHseeds never ended up depositing the interac transfer I sent them, so it inevitably expired. I had forgotten about the order completely, when out of the blue one day I received a letter in the mail complete with 12 free seeds and a handwritten 'apology' letter. This absolutely floored me, and left me feeling super warm and fuzzy inside. I've been cherishing the seeds up until now, so I'm really really happy that I can finally bring them to life :) Anyways....thank you JAHseeds!

Onto the setup! Currently running:

2x alibaba 240w QB

Promix HP + 2inch layer of worm castings on the bottom

Strain is The Best My seeds are not feminized however, so still unsure of sex.

Right now they are in 1 gallon pots and I'm planning on moving them into 7 gallon fabric pots when the time is right.

I kinda went ham one night and bought the entire GH nutrient lineup (including all the additives....) so I'm planning on sticking to their schedule (halved) throughout the grow. I know I could have done without a lot (most) of them, but yeah it was still cheaper than buying an Oz from the LP....Currently only feeding them water.

The tent is a GA 48x48x80, with a Vivosun 6 inch duct fan and carbon filter

Holmes Lil' Blizzard fan (this thing moves a lot of air)

I originally had a smaller tent so I started out germinating 3 seeds by dropping them in a glass of water for 36 hours. After they all popped, I planted them directly into coco pots. At that time I decided to change to a larger tent, so I dropped 2 more seeds into a glass of water to germinate. 36 hours later one of the seeds had popped, but not the other. I planted the one that popped, and left the other in the water for another 12 hours. At this time it still hadn't popped, so I just dropped it into a pot with the others. The one that never popped didnt end up coming through the soil until about 2 days ago (I was actually just about to give up on it). It's the tiny coco pot in the middle. Pretty sure it's gonna be a retard plant but whatever, I'll give it some love and care. Don't tell Justin. The nice healthy plant on the bottom right is the other seed that I germinated with it at the same time.

u/WubbaLubbaDubStep · 3 pointsr/shroomers

Yeahhhh ya gotta fan those good. Great advice.

It's always a long process, though. You don't start growing shrooms to have them in a few weeks... you gotta plan 3-4 months out.

Takes me about 12 weeks from start to finish for even just the first flush.

Edit: I forgot... CONGRATS! Seeing them first sprout the first time is such a cool experience. Happy for ya bud!

Edit 2: Speaking of fanning... this bad boy has been working wonders

u/cassalassa · 3 pointsr/beyondthebump

I got this stroller fan and it works pretty well to circulate air. We originally used it when we went on vacation someplace humid in July, and it worked well then. We still use it on long trips, or to keep my cats cool if they are in their kennel in the car for a trip.

u/Jordo_99 · 3 pointsr/Homebrewing

I have two Fast Ferments (8gal plastic conical) but limited experience with them so far since I've only done one brew since I bought them in February).

Here's what I can tell you

  • I absolutely love being able to remove trub and eliminate transfers to secondary

  • I'm slightly worried about possible oxygenation from the ball jar after dumping trub and opening the valve back up...not a problem at all if fermentation is still happening.

  • Getting yeast out at the end of the brew is also super easy...and if you're worried about leaving beer on the yeast you can always close the valve

  • Transferring to keg has never been easier...the beer also flows out way faster than using a siphon too

  • Cleaning is a lot easier than with carboys because I could get my entire arm inside to wipe things down (just don't use anything that can scratch it...soft sponges only!)

  • If you do 6.5gal in the 8gal fementer you may not have enough headspace for a top-fermenting yeast--I was surprised I needed a blow-off tube with all that headspace (hefeweisen...should've known better though)

  • Carrying 5-6gal of wort is just as annoying as with a regular carboy but I wouldn't say it's worse...I went up/down 2 flights of stairs and lifted 6gal of wort up to my chest to hang it on the wall mounts; It wasn't an enjoyable experience but wasn't horrible either and I'm a 150lb, 6'0" dude.

  • Unboxing and putting everything together will take patience and time...the plastic mold isn't great and so you have to "break in" the threads by tightening/loosening parts a few times. Also be careful about your gaskets and valves being installed properly (more below)

  • DEFINITELY get the stand...they have a flat bottom for the collection jar so it will stand up on it's own but it'd be REALLY easy to tip over by accident.

  • The lid can be hard to seal (especially if it's missing the silicone gasket)...my quick fix was to seal using teflon tape around the threads and that worked fine.

  • Mine leaked from the start...turned out the valve didn't get installed properly and so it wasn't sealing. It held water for a few days without leaks so I assumed it was good...tightening down the valve properly using the handle was a hard thing to figure out link to show you

    Mods I've done

  • Drilling and installing a sampling port is super easy and extremely useful.

  • It's a bit weird taping a rectangle shape heating pad it around the cone but I was able to do it just like with my plastic/glass carboys.

  • Drilling out another hole in the lid for a temperature probe was very straight forward and can be done very easily.

    Other thoughts

  • I haven't re-pitched yeast yet but I plan to start doing brew-days on back-to-back weekends so I can re-pitch my yeast.

  • I specifically bought this because I wanted to do 6.0-6.5 gal batches so I can keg 5gal and then have 6-12 bottles to hang onto (so I can enjoy the kegs and then use bottles to compare recipe tweaks and share with friends)

  • I'm definitely not able to speak to sanitizing yet with only one brew...that's supposed to be a potential downside to a plastic conical.

    -----------------------

So yeah...that's a shitload of text for you to read over but I wanted to try and give you a bunch of info. I'm really happy with my decision so far and if you have any questions ask away.

I will say that I got a killer deal on these ($120 for two, with all accessories...$300 new, possibly more) but if I were paying full price I'd have likely waited around for the FermZilla.

I use a Compucleaner to clean it that i bought years ago for cleaning my PC which works very well. Datavac is another brand but a bit more expensive. You need to make sure you put a finger on the fan to hold it in place so it doesn't break though as they are strong.

Don't blow into the vents around the sides. The plastic on the top of the PS4 clips off, clean it from the inside so the dust blows out.

Aside from that making sure that it's placed somewhere elevated helps a lot to avoid gathering dust in the first place. Try to avoid having it somewhere like the bottom shelf of a unit close to the floor.

u/MrSoapbox · 3 pointsr/buildapc

Yes, I personally use one.

I've used this cleaner with very good results.

It can however, get hot quick and it's ridiculously powerful. So you need to hold it back a fair bit, blast very short blasts and just be cautious. It cleaned it like it was brand new though.

Edit - I apologise I didn't see you say "blowers" but just saw the air cans (which I don't like personally) so then, to answer your question, sorry, I don't know :(

Edit 2 - a quick search on amazon for anti static vacuum nozzle did show quite a few, but I don't know what to think of them. Personally, I wouldn't but that's just me.

u/Leisureguy · 2 pointsr/wicked_edge

It helps if you wash your beard frequently during hay-fever season---e.g., each time after going outside. Indoors, you can use an air cleaner, which helps a lot. I have one of these in the living room and another in the bedroom, and they help a LOT.

u/_transatlantique · 2 pointsr/ragdolls

Sorry I think air purifier would have been a better word. This is what we have: http://www.amazon.com/Honeywell-Long-Life-QuietCare-Purifier-17000-S/dp/B000050AQ5

u/bbdoll · 2 pointsr/cats

usually it's the saliva that triggers allergies. you'll want some hypoallergenic wipes or dry shampoo that you use weekly on the cat. you'll also want to groom the cat daily with a brush like this, the less saliva covered fur floating around the better! you'll definitely want some HEPA air purifiers, probably at least two that you run on high constantly. vacuum the filters every couple of weeks. keep the bedroom closed off so there's a pet free zone for awhile. have allergy pills of course.

many people get used to an animal through exposure so it's possible in a few months she won't be allergic to that specific cat anymore. sounds like that might be the case if she's able to be around her friend's cat longer than others.

u/wherestheanykey · 2 pointsr/LifeProTips

$5-20: Mentholated ointment, over the counter antihistamines, Neti pot, nasal irrigator. For the sore throat, menthol lozenges, essential oils (peppermint), and oral anesthetics (Cepacol) can't be beat.

$30-$50: Vapor inhaler and humidifier

$50-$100: Air purifier, better air purifier

(And no, I don't work for Honeywell... their filters are just cheap and easy to come by)

u/Sarcasticorjustrude · 2 pointsr/whatisthisthing

Patton doesn't make them anymore, but Holmes has a t-stat window fan.

Amazon Link

Bionaire makes some, too, but they're more expensive.

u/loneflanger · 2 pointsr/mflb

Ever since I've been smoking and have had to clear the smell out, I've used one of these: http://www.amazon.com/Holmes-HAWF2043-Twin-Window-Fan/dp/B000065DK8

I don't have that exact model, but I have one similar to it. Most if not all of them have switches for each fan to change from intake to exhaust. They fit in your window pretty snuggly and can clear a room of smoke pretty quickly. I usually blow hits directly into it (both from the MFLB and a bowl) and have never had any problems with smell. Of course, it will smell on the other side of the window but it seems to dissipate quicker than just simply blowing it out of the window.

Plus you can use it for its intended purpose during the late spring/early summer when it's too cold at night to use the A/C but warm enough during the day where you need to do more than just open a window to keep a room cool.

u/gooberfaced · 2 pointsr/homeowners

> Do you mean semi-permanently open it and have a fan fitted into it?

How you choose to do it would be up to you and how well you were able to match fan size to window size.
Any way you can exhaust the hot air- getting rid of it and bringing in cool air from other areas in the house is much more efficient that trying to cool air that is already hot down.

Open the window and measure the width and max height you have available then google "window fan" and find the one that matches the size opening most closely. These types of fans typically have side panel extensions to fit odd spaces.

Example here, here, and here.

u/Momentumjam · 2 pointsr/GoodValue

OP, I know that this is old, but if you're still looking for something to cool you down, I'd look into a window fan. I own this model, and I can't imagine I would be able to function without it. You can set one fan to blow air in, and the other to blow air out. It keeps air constantly circulating. I can't say that it will work as well as a window AC unit, but it is much cheaper to buy, and run.

I have that mounted on the window behind the rack where my miners are (spare bedroom upstairs). I leave the other window in that room open, and have this fan set to exhaust. It can pull a tremendous amount of air through that room. I have not been mining long enough to know how it will do in the summer, but if you think you can get by with a fan instead of AC, then this is the fan to get - don't waste money on those cheap plastic window fans sold at local stores, get this one and be done with it :-)

u/EatMoreCrisps · 2 pointsr/bikecommuting

Nope, I don't change. However, I can work in shorts in the summer. The key to remaining fresh is not whether you sweat a bit, but how clean you and your clothes are when you do.

If you sweat with a dirty body or clothes, you'll foster some pungent smells. If you shower in the morning and ride in in clean clothes, you're unlikely to generate any unpleasantness.

Some people refuse to believe this and get quite irate at the suggestion; I don't know why. My wife knows that it's very important to me that she tells me if I smell, and I've even asked our small children about it, with their sensitive noses... And believe me, they don't hold back their opinions.

The sweaty time is the time immediately after getting off, when the heat you generated isn't getting blown off by the breeze. For that a fan at the desk is good. I like these Zippi fans - nearly silent.

u/TootinOnPutin · 2 pointsr/battlestations

I would suggest having a friend or family member stay in your unit for a night or 2 and provide feedback about everything (temp, amenities, etc). To me 78 feels crazy high for Florida but I'm in the midwest. Even here I sleep at 70. Also sorry about the link. Maybe this one will work but if not, I was referring to a 6" clip fan.

u/onebigsmile · 2 pointsr/DentalSchool

I'm a current D2. I don't think it needs to be dental specific (like a tooth keychain or something silly like that). More practical gifts seem to be better like a contigo mug (http://www.amazon.com/Contigo-Autoseal-Stainless-Steel-Travel/dp/B00HZI5XBG/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1417880861&sr=8-2&keywords=contigo ), these are like the best mugs and they keep your coffee or drink warm for a really long time. You could get her a mini fan to take with her into her operatory clinic or simulation clinic. Our's get really hot and sometimes people bring in their own fans and put them on the counter next to them: something like this http://www.amazon.com/Comfort-Zone-CZ6C-Clip-On-White/dp/B000U9V47E/ref=sr_1_14?ie=UTF8&qid=1417880999&sr=8-14&keywords=small+fan .
Other than things like that just get her small things that will make her comfortable like fuzzy socks or better yet, buy things for you both that will create experiences. Examples would be concert tickets for you both, a trip somewhere, bed and breakfast for a night or weekend, etc.
hope some of this helps

Oh it looked pretty far in pic #29. You can still probably lower it to just a few inches away if its only a 90 watter, especially because LED and fluorescents are a more diffused source of lighting. I have a 400W HPS only 12 inches from the tops of mine with no burning, and CFLs and T-5s less than a half-inch away with no burning.

Regardless of how close they are, I'd also recommend a cheap small internal circulation fan like this or whatever you can find at a store near you, for the flowering area. It will improve stem strength, reduce chances of mold/mildew/algae/some types of bugs, and often keep temperatures down by helping your ventilation system.

u/DevonianAge · 2 pointsr/aspergers

No idea how well these work, but that This Is Why I'm Broke site that's always advertising here on reddit featured this bed fan. I think I sort of blows air up under the covers at mattress level. EDIT: better description.

Also, I'm not an aspie, but I do need heavy blankets to sleep well. However, I find that a lot of loft in my blanket can sometimes help as much or more than an equally heavy "flat" blanket--possibly because they're easier to position around me, and they don't tend to drag down off the side of the bed as easily. A good down comforter, though expensive, is very good at feeling "big" without being nearly as clammy as a polyester-filled comforter, and both are better, for me, than heavy sewn woven coverlets or other flat blankets. Down is also warmer when you need it. It just seems to hold, disperse, and distribute heat very well no matter what the temperature. If I could afford it, I would have only down comforters in my house. Nothing else compares.

u/2capp · 2 pointsr/Seattle

My place is almost always warmer inside than out :( I got a Vornado 660 last year and have not regretted it one bit. It's pricey but it's built like a tank and there's nothing like having a constant breeze in your place on demand. I replaced a three fan setup that was noisy as hell with that and a box fan.

u/ApocalypseTroop · 2 pointsr/malelivingspace

I use the Vornado 660. Not exactly super stylish but it recirculates air around your room.

u/IamAbc · 2 pointsr/INEEEEDIT

Because they’re cheap. I have this Vornado CR1-0121-06 660 Large Whole Room Air Circulator Fan, Black https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0025QKUE8/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_jxR9AbRT13V31 and it works way better than any shitty tower fan, oscillating fan, box fan etc.

I just have it in the corner of my room pointing up towards my bed and it pushes a lot of air

u/ihaveascreenname · 2 pointsr/hackintosh

I ended up getting the Hyper 212 Plus because I read some reviews that said it was quieter than the Evo. I've never had an Evo, so I have no basis of comparison, but I just installed the Plus last night, and it was definitely quieter all day today than the stock cooler I took out of there.

On a separate but related note - I have a quad monitor setup, with 2 GPUs, 3770k, and WD Black, so my office gets pretty hot. The old fan I was using to cool the room was too loud for me to keep it on when having meetings on Skype. So I ordered a Vornado 660. On the lowest setting, it keeps me nice and cool, and is damn near silent, even from up close. So quiet in fact, that after I bought it, that's when I decided to replace the stock CPU cooler, as that was then the loudest thing in the room. So, I definitely recommend that Vornado - worth every penny.

u/HomelessRodeo · 2 pointsr/SaltLakeCity

You're going to want to use the same setup that is used in growing. Get a carbon duct filter, an inline duct fan, and some ducting and set that up where you are growing. These are actually carbon pellets instead of a carbon mat like in consumer air filters.

[Filter](https://www.amazon.com/Phresh-701005-Carbon-Filter-16-
Inch/dp/B004FVJK60/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1468221153&sr=8-1&keywords=phresh+filter)

Inline Duct Fan

You don't even need ducting if you don't want it, you can literally mount the two of them together. I place the unit on a raised platform (like a table or something) for better circulation. That setup right there will change the air completely in a room that size once every 4 minutes.

u/chalkiest_studebaker · 2 pointsr/microgrowery

I would leave the closet slightly open, then close the guest room door. Keep all heaters/AC/dehumidifiers/humidifiers in that room. You don't want applications like that in a closet or small tent with the plants. Air coming out of a humidifier might be closer to 100% humidity which isnt good blowing on your plants, same with a space heater blowing out hot air. We want consistent temps and humidity. That's why we want in the same room but not the same tent. Just make sure the conditions are similar in the closet vs the room. That may affect how open the door needs to be to the closet.

--------------------------------

I have a similar setup and just keep the humidifier/dehumidier in the room along with the tent.
I use these:

AMAZON LINKS

Humidifier

Dehumidifer

I would recommend them both. Obviously I use the humidifer in the winter and switch em in the summer. Just get the treatment/bateriostatic fluid for when you fill the humidifier. It will prevent algae or mold from growing. Like this

When you get to summer and switch to a dehumidifier, you'll see that unless you feel like emptying it every 12 hours, you'll need to plug it a hose and have it drain outside, or at least into a 5 gallon bucket. If not, the unit will turn off once it's full, which means you'll get home and see your room has skyrocketed to 70% humidity and the dehumidifier is beeping to be emptied. Been there. Those internal tanks are way too small. I can empty the 5 gallon bucket every few days, so less maintenance required.

Aim for 60% in veg, 50% in early flowering, 40-45% in late flowering. Try not to drop below 50% in veg, and definitely not over 50% in mid-late flowering. That last bit is the most important to prevent bud rot and other mold related issues. Don't underestimate the importance of humidity. Keeping an optimal humidity level for the plant will directly correlate to their overall health.

"High humidity is a problem because water usage by the plant is too slow and compromises quality, even though the stomates are constantly open. Likewise, if humidity is very low and subsequent transpiration is too high, the plant closes its stomatal openings to minimize water loss and wilting. Unfortunately this also means photosynthesis is slowed and subsequently, so is plant growth."

I ordered this fan from Amazon based on a couple of youtube videos that I watched looking for a tent fan, runs on D batteries. It's fairly large, so only consider it if you're not traveling far.

If you get a clip on fan like this: https://www.amazon.com/Lasko-2004W-2-Speed-6-Inch-White/dp/B00FXOFO7W

you can move it around to get the best angle on the plants, also is really quiet

If this is a long term hobby or in prohibition land and/or you have the funds. Black ops are the best on the market.

But also depending on where you are venting. YOu may grabs some plants that can help mask the smell

We recently did a trip with our 4-month-old, and it was fine! I brought her chair and SnuggleMe pillow that she sleeps in. I LOVE the sit-me-up chair, and it's lightweight and folds up easily, so it's not a hassle to travel with it. It was good to pop her in when I was getting ready and to bring her in the bathroom with me. The hotel had cribs available and set one up in the room for us. To bring all the stuff up to the room, I used a ring sling and asked for a luggage cart that I loaded up. Backpack on my back. You can unload everything and then put baby back in the carseat and go park.

If you're pumping or using bottles, you might want to have an AC adaptor for your car and bring travel size soap and an on-the-go drying rack and bottle brush. I also brought a small fan for LO, since I've dealt with a lot of wonky AC units in hotel rooms.

Ask for your room to have a microwave and fridge! I would order from Ubereats/GrubHub/Favor or something like that instead of room service. Or if the hotel has a restaurant, call in your order to pick it up downstairs and save some $$$.

Good luck!

Oh and to convert a chest freezer for temp controlled fermentation is way easier then a keezer build .

-Find a chest freezer or (upright freezer is even better), sometimes they are free on Craigslist ( mine was)

-Drill hole, use inkbird or similar
Thermometer and run it into the freezer.

-Plug in heating element I used this for a long time and it worked great

Fermentation Heater by The Weekend Brewer https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01J1WZNM2/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_RQoCDbWTTXHDD

-Plug in chest freezer and heater. Temperature controlled fermentation done.

That way when it’s time to crash you just adjust the temp on the thermometer and the freezer turns on. Heat turns off. My beer got markedly better when I started controlling my fermentation temps and it became possible to rebrew the “ same”beers

u/IAmBellerophon · 2 pointsr/Homebrewing

I've been loving this one. Spreads the heat out evenly around a large portion of my fermenter, rather than concentrating it like a lot of the "brew belts" and such do.

Not sure why it's $40 now though...when I bought it, it was only $25.

not sure what your budget is but if you wanna guarantee it buy a small carbon filter and inline fan used for growing, 4" fan and carbon filter are around 80-100$. have that in the room you're smoking in, and it'll recirculate the air through the filter and leave no smell. literally, no smell, it filters dank plants in flowering and will filter smoke too easily.

this will do. if you run a duct from it to the other side of the room 5-6 ft, you'll have a whole room circulation going on filtering the air.

We have the round mechanical noise machine that a couple folks linked to here already. It is nice, but kinda expensive for something that just makes noise.

A couple years ago we were dealing with allergies in our house, so I ended up buying a couple hepa filters that are older models of this. On low, this sounds basically like the round noise machine's loudest setting. Medium is like that noise machine on steroids. High is like an airplane idling in the room. We love them. We actually lug those things around on road trips because they are so great at drowning out outside noise.

u/myownalias · 1 pointr/homelab

I would consider at least sheetrocking the inside of the comms closet (no need for mud and painting). Exposed insulation will generate a lot of dust from air movement and vibration in the house. Your equipment and your family don't need it. Second, exposed studs will transmit some noise. A cheap way to improve the sound isolation is to build a double stud rock wool wall, basically 2x4s on a 2x6 sill. Let the interior sheet rock absorb the sound.

400 watts of heat in a 35 sq ft room is a lot (imagine 4 people spending several hours in that room, in summer). You're definitely going to need ventilation if you don't want equipment fans to ramp up, especially being in a well insulated room. I would suggest playing around with your layout so you can have the closet ventilate into the unfinished area without ducts, which restrict flow.

You probably want to run cable conduit where you have a finished ceiling, so locating the panel near the unfinished area may cut down on that expense.

The electrical panel will also require a minimum 3 ft in front, 30 inches wide to meet electrical code. With the rack in place, the 5 ft of that room probably isn't enough.

In your diagram, you haven't made it easy to access the back of the rack. If you're working on the rack, you will soon appreciate having 30 inches of space behind it. You would probably also enjoy a workbench big enough to hold a rack mount server, in front of the rack. You could build storage above and below the workbench. A wall mounted screen would be nice.

If it were me, I'd extend the closet all the way to the brown bench(?) and drop the reading nook. Put a low and a high vent by the laundry equipment side for ventilation. Maybe instead of the top vent, get a dual fan with thermostat. I'd put the rack against the exterior wall, with the back of the rack close to the electrical panel, so you can use the access space twice. I'd put a work bench on the outside wall where the chair is (leaving enough space to install a server in the rack). I would leave the patch panel where it is or mount it between the electrical panel and the back of the rack, and run a cable tray overhead from the patch panel out to the unfinished basement. You could easily drop cables for the rack, etc. I'd have the door to the room open into the office, opposite the work bench.

If you put the 18' wall closer to the orange thing, the extra space would let you make a W arrangement for desks instead of a J. This will be very useful if you ever have someone working with you, or maybe two people playing games. Instead of the top part of the J, you could have the reading nook there. If the storage closet is all shelves of computer stuff, I'd move the space to the comm closet and save a wall and door. If it's other things, I'd open it to the unfinished area instead.

From personal experience, I'd avoid square inside corners on the desks. Definitely spend the time/money on circular shapes on the inside corners as it will make it possible to arrange a keyboard and mouse at any angle. You probably want about a 20" radius.

Just my thoughts. You have a fun project ahead!

u/cooksfor40humans · 1 pointr/internetparents

I use a whole house window fan. It moves A LOT of air, much more air then a couple window fans could. I run it all night with all but one window closed, at the opposite side of the house from the fan. In the morning the house is usually 65ish and I turn off the fan and close window, it stays at least 10 degrees cooler then the outside until the evening.

I have a 2000 sq ft house, I put this in a 3rd floor window and it pulls air for the whole house. Don't buy the Lasko plastic fans (this one has steel blades). The plastic blades warp at high speed and don't push(pull) as much air.

u/BoogerPresley · 1 pointr/washingtondc

It's much easier for guys- a lot of men's dress slacks are usually lightweight & breathable polyester, I'll wear that with a polyester polo (like a golf or soccer shirt) and then change into a collared work shirt at the office. That's probably not as viable an option for you, but if you can it makes a big difference. On really hot days you can hit it a few times with a spray water bottle and stick it in the freezer for 15 minutes prior to riding in. a soft-bladed desk fan works wonders. In addition, I have a small towel or two at the office and use baby wipes/rubbing alcohol + cotton pads. I also keep a can of soda in the office fridge- not to drink, but to press against myself to help cool down:/ A more upright cycling posture means you're less aerodynamic, but that also means more airflow and sometimes helps cool, but does little when it's 90℉+ and humid.

Candles would work, but incense seems to be stronger. It would probably do a better job at masking the smell until you can fix the issue.

Here are some of my favorite scents. IMO, they are manly but don't have that overcompensation aspect I associate with overt scents like "leather," "pipe tobacco," "Man Town," etc.

Sandalwood rose incense

You might also think about an air purifier. A lot of house plants do a really great job at air purification too, and they can really make a place look classy.

u/Berean_Katz · 1 pointr/NoStupidQuestions

Although I'm not an expert, it definitely helps to have ventilation ducts running through your house, along with HVAC units to recycle the air inside with brand new air. Also, the type of flooring you have seems to make worlds of difference. My house in Japan is made of straight-up wood, whereas the houses I lived in the US are made of...laminate flooring, I believe? Also, if you have an attic, that's a major cause for dust collection; plus pets and number of human occupants.

I've been doing some research, and HEPA air purifiers can help filter the air in your home. I'm planning on buying one for my Japanese house. Here's a link to the one I'm ordering: http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B000N9CPQK/ref=mp_s_a_1_1?qid=1397879924&sr=1-1&pi=SX200_QL40

u/caffeinegoddess · 1 pointr/trees

If you're doing it in just one small room, you could probably get a portable Hepa filter. It picks up the smoke while it's still in the air so less settles on the furniture and stuff.

This is the one I have for my apartment room. Originally got it for my seasonal allergies. I keep it by my door under the fire alarm and smoke with the window open and a sploof and I rarely need to spray anything.

But what do you think for (without tent) solution? I have 2 small windows in my basement. If I put 2 windows fan like these:
Bionaire Twin Reversible Airflow Window Fan with Remote Control https://www.amazon.com/dp/B000065DKJ/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_Ds5EAbH7BJ1R4

And a strong large fan at the end of basement ( close to door) like this:
Vornado 660 Large Whole Room Air Circulator Fan https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0025QKUE8/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_Et5EAb68EK640

Would it work?

Like I said I really wanna find other solution other then the tent IF POSSIBLE.
Considering that I don't have like 100gpus, but only 9 up to 27.

A much better investment would be any regular tower fan or vornado.

  1. It adds no weight or awkwardness to your headset.

  2. Its going to move waaaaaay more air, and cool not just your head but your whole body.

  3. It provides you situational awareness of where you are in the room since you'll be able to feel the direction of the breeze.

  4. The room fan will be generally useful, even outside VR.

So I use this large sieve...
https://www.amazon.com/Winco-SIV-14-Sieves-14-Inch/dp/B003YOXD1W

And this fan...
https://www.amazon.com/Vornado-CR1-0121-06-Large-Whole-Circulator/dp/B0025QKUE8

I have a HG/BM setup and just dump the beans into the sieve then hold the sieve over the fan which I have pointing straight up from the ground. Gently swirling the beans around cools the beans to room temperature in less than a minute. I normally roast 1/2 lb at a time, but I've done up to a lb and the setup still works well. I pretty much have to use it on the back porch or the garage because any chaff that's still with beans will get blown out almost immediately.

You could definitely get away with a less expensive fan, but I found it on sale for $50 and I use around the house for other things when I'm not roasting so win-win.

u/sporobolus · 1 pointr/BuyItForLife

we had a Vornado 723B (no longer available) substantially similar in design, except all black and without the handle; the Vornado 783 looks like a taller version of 723B

our 723B lasted us about ten years of heavy use during summers, and simply stopped working late last fall — i will attempt to revive it this summer; the feet on 293 are a good idea — ours had just the bare loop of aluminum pipe, so we improvised with foam pipe insulation to reduce vibration on a hard floor; once that was fixed it was pretty quiet; i really like this design because it can be aimed precisely and it is a good use of materials

in comparison, it looks like the replacement model for 723B is the Vornado 660; Sweethome likes it but based on imagery, i think the base may be more prone to breakage and it doesn't look nearly as good (i prefer matte plastic finishes)

we also have a smaller Vornado, plus a small Vorrnado heater-fan, and both have survived 10+ years but with a lighter duty cycle

Yes you can actually, portable Air Conditioners have this exact thing for exhausting heat by hooking it up to a sliding window.

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B002XITVCK They use it even for servers as well.

The PROBLEM is the moisture from outside can easily cause your components to corrode if your using that as intake, without some kind of moisture filtre/collector.

But you'll want to get actual temp data for how hot or cold your PC is running with and without the heater to determine if it's actually necessary.

Same here on the oil based. The chicken coup style box just...eh...What I might do is buy a metal cabinet and place it above the MICA panel. The MICA doesn't get hot enough to present any danger, and I think (even on low) would heat the metal cabinet up enough to stay even warmer than the rest of the shop.

Here is the MICA panel

  • Heats you up quickly if you're standing near
  • When placed next to heavy tools, it heats them up, which in turn heats the air
  • The safest means of electronic heat
  • Wall Mountable
  • Runs parallel to my finishing table, and does a crazy good job at drying my finishes.

I'm stressing the MICA because I'm kind of blown away that they aren't used by more woodworkers.

Holy crap, my radiator is on sale right now. I got the recommendation from Sweethome, who talk it up quite a bit as compared to the competition. It has performed really well.

I just set both to keep the shop above freezing before I walk out. I insulated my shed pretty well, but I was amazed at how little they actually need to run (even when it was near zero F outside).
u/kalpol · 1 pointr/Austin

I grew up in a house without central heat or AC. At the beginning we had those old Dearborn gas heaters, but ditched those before we died of carbon monoxide poisoning. We had a wood stove for a long time too which worked well. But for space heaters, the best and least dangerous ones are the oil radiator type - they don't get crazy hot, have few moving parts to fail, and some have neat features like timers.

As for AC units, a window unit works fine, but you have to do some planning about which rooms you'll use during the day. Close the rest off. Make sure your closets and things are closed as well. You pretty much need one unit in each large room to cool it.

Ceiling or other fans are important too - you can get by with a lot lower usage of the window unit if the air is kept moving.

u/JayReddt · 1 pointr/HomeImprovement

Thanks!

The ceilings are only about 7' and the room is, say, 250 square feet. I filled out that calculator. I need 3,694W. My space heater is only 1,500. So, we'd really need two space heaters then... darn. It does help when we open the door to the rest of home and that heat gets drawn in a bit. Although I'm not sure if that's more or less cost effective than an additional space heater. It was hard enough to convince my wife to even get one... [we have [this one] (https://www.amazon.com/dp/B004BZFQB8/?) which seems good and safe].

Anyway, single pane glass windows being normal is good to hear. These are all older, single pane glass windows. I will get some insulation film and hopefully that helps. I can also go to attic and see if can increase that insulation.

Lastly though... can anything be done to improve the windows (aside from film)? Obviously can sand down the paint and ensure they close better. However, what about replacing the glass with double pane? Is that even possible?

u/beanfilledwhackbonk · 1 pointr/beyondthebump

FWIW, an oil filled heater (example) needs a lot less clearance and is a lot safer than a radiant heater in every way.

u/Subbota · 1 pointr/Frugal

I use oil-filled radiators like this one. I use about 100kwh/month more electricity in the winter than I do in the summer and this is in Dallas so in colder climates these might not be the best choice.

That reflector may be a little difficult to get a 4 foot light footprint from 2 feet or so (you need to measure the footprint from where the plants leaves will be not the bottom of the tent). You may only have 4 square feet of good light coverage with a short tent.

One nice aspect of a taller tent is you can always lower the light.

From what I've seen, people usually use T5 bulbs in the shorter tents which are often just used for mothers or new clone establishment.

Multiple strains are tricky, you'll have varying plant heights to deal with so splitting the difference between what's the ideal light distance per strain is something you'll be monitoring often.

I say get a 60" tall tent and enjoy the freedom you'll have if you ever decide to grow a nice tall sativa. Plus you can always put the pots on overturned 5 gallon buckets to save you back.

What you said about 8 plants is interesting. That's pretty closely packed pots. You'll have to make sure no plant is wider than 12" or it will be shading the plant next to it. Plus growing plants against the side of the tent isn't great for them. They usually end up looking crappy. If you're trying to grow small plants I recommend smaller pots. 3 gallons are fine. You may be limited to 6 plants in a 48x24 space fitting comfortably.

But that's just my 2 cents. I say leave yourself with as many options as possible. Future you may want to be doing something very differently.

As far as carbon filters go, you've got a 347 cfm fan so you're limited by how many CFM the filter will support.
I'd say
http://www.amazon.com/Phresh-Filter-701005-Minute-16-Inch/dp/B004FVJK60/ref=sr_1_4?s=lawn-garden&ie=UTF8&qid=1413129021&sr=1-4
is a good one for that even though it's rated for 400 cfm. Phresh is very well respected and should keep all the smells under control.

u/Mitten_Punch · 1 pointr/microgrowery

What lights are you using?

If it's current-gen LED, you should be fine with a 4" inline, and 4" Phresh filter. If not, 6" inline and one of these.

I don't know that it's the best "bang for your buck". But cheap fans and cheap filters, are, well, cheap. Fan is the most important part of your grow. If your fan goes, your plants die in hours. Filters, IME, either do an okayish job for a cycle or two (Vivosun, Apollo, iPower), or they do a great job for 1+ years (Phresh).

Or something like it. Get cool mist. Warm is too hard to maintain.

The one in the link above is ugly, but it's big enough to really get the humidity you want (30-40%) when it's really dry.

I had to scrap mine and ended up trying others - now I have to have 2 to replace the work of that one.

This one also rated well, but I don't have personal experience with it.
Honeywell HCM350W Germ Free Cool Mist Humidifier, White https://www.amazon.com/dp/B002QAYJPO/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_NP0Byb48FZVET

Dampits CAN make a tiny difference if you use them properly and with a cover. But, generally, that's only for a little extra protection. Drop the money on a real humidifier especially with all your other instruments.

Lastly, don't overhumidify - you'll get mold.

u/kevk312 · 1 pointr/malelivingspace

I live in Chicago and have tried all three types of humidifiers. One thing to consider is the size of your space. I've listed the pros & cons below based on my experience.

  1. Ultrasonic: PROS: ultra quiet, humidifies quickly. CONS: potential to leave a fine white film over surfaces - unless you use distilled water, pricey & tends to only last a couple of seasons (ultrasonic mechanism breaks due to hard water. - Things may have changed with build quality over the years but a few years back this was my experience). Uses ultrasonic waves to turn water into vapor.
  2. Warm Mist: PROS: longer life, white noise. CONS: white noise, hard water will scale the heating element - maintenance required, typically only good for smaller spaces. Boils the water to create steam.
  3. Cool Mist/Evaporative: PROS: large reservoir models available, ideal for whole house humidification. CONS: need to purchase disposable wick - typically lasts one season, reservoir can develop mold & bacteria so need to use a bacteriostatic treatment in the water. Air is pulled through a wet wick to disperse water molecules in the air.

Out of all three, I use the Cool Mist/Evaporative only because I got tired to having to constantly fill the water chambers of the other types multiple times a day. Also with the ultrasonic, I've had white powdery film develop on surfaces near the humidifier's stream.

The Cool Mist/Evaporative takes care of my entire apartment and I only have to mess with filling it once a day. The disposable wick becomes covered in calcium over time, its nice to be able to toss it after the winter is over. The only downside is that with each water filling, I need to add a small cap full of bacteriostatic treatment to prevent the wick from becoming a breeding ground for bacteria.

    Hope this helps!

The larger one is fantastic and definitely puts more moisture in the air. Noticable change in RH in about 1500sq ft of space. The smaller on I have in my closet set at 40% and my grow room stays perfectly at that level. The larger one is easier to fill and just generally nicer but the smaller one is also pretty great, just harder to fill.

I also recommend the whole house humidifier! I got this one a few weeks ago and have been pleased. It does take up floor space and requires some maintenance (cleaning, refilling), but my dogs/door knobs/cages don't zap me anymore and I don't wake up with that terrible dry winter air induced stuffy nose and scratchy throat nonsense. I set it up near the air intake for the house and it does a decent job of circulating some humidity around the house. It varies by about 5% by the time it gets to the farthest places in the house from the humidifier, but it sure beats life without it! My house is fairly small, so mileage may vary for larger homes.

u/Shezaam · 1 pointr/Denver

When I lived in a two story 2200 sq ft townhouse I had a whole house humidifier (Honeywell) and changed the filters every 3-4 mos. It worked great! Also had an air cleaner attached to the furnace. That cut way down on dust. Now I'm in a 1200' loft with a heat pump and whole building broiler for heat. I got this, which is sufficient for a one story place, but would not be enough for you.

Funny thing, I used that exact one for a while till I got sick of it. Small reservoir needed filling constantly, and white stuff everywhere. I switched to this and I've been pretty happy. But I had a larger space and needed to replace two of the ones you linked. You can probably get a cheaper one in the same style.

The comments about the humidity censor through me off, but I didn't have any of those problems. Either there's enough of a draft it didn't matter or they fixed it.

I second the vote for a Schumacher unit. I have an older one that continues to work great (someday it will need to have the battery replaced...) I've read that these units can be charged from a 12 volt car source but you have to disconnect it when it gets to "100%" to prevent damage from overcharging. In any event, you'll be able to charge everyone's phones (which take more power than you'd guess...)

Here's a 22 Ah power pack unit at Lowes for $113. Amp-hours (Ah) are the total power the battery can deliver - higher is better. These units will shut off before the internal lead-acid battery is drained so that you don't ruin it.

http://www.lowes.com/pd_595192-41462-XP2260___?Ntt=xp2260&UserSearch=xp2260&productId=50223897

For a fan, I'd recommend one that runs on batteries. I have a couple of 10 inch fans and they'll run for days on batteries.

http://www.amazon.com/O2COOL%C2%AE-10-inch-Portable-Fan-Adapter/dp/B00ATSHMIQ

Large, plug-in, box fans take more power - about 1 amp on "low" and 2 amps on "high". With a 22 Ah battery you'd get 22 hours on low and 11 on high.

If you plan to charge a couple of 2.6 Ah phone batteries, you'll have to cut down the fan usage accordingly.

Works great! I also added a stroller toy arch for a little distraction. I also keep her in her car seat instead of the rumbler for smaller errands like Target runs so that she positively associates car seat with getting out of the house and looking at new people and things. It’s gotten better little by little. I suspect she doesn’t like the Mesa car seat too much. She protested less when I rolled up a blanket and put it under her butt. It made the seat a little less deep so she wasn’t contorted/folded in half as much. Good luck!

The temperature to use when you're using a calculator is the highest temperature the beer reached at any point during fermentation. So I would use 73.2 in your case.

I've heard that the stick-on thermometers are great. You might also want to look into some more temperature control options. You can go as simple as putting the fermenter into a tub of water, adding frozen water bottles as needed to maintain a cooler temperature, or as far as buying an extra fridge or freezer with a temperature controller. In my case, this time of year, my basement is reliably in the upper 50s/low 60s, so I just use one of these heat wraps plugged into an Inkbird temperature controller with the probe taped to the side of the carboy with a flattened koozie on top of it to insulate it from the ambient air temperature.

This handily fits my one gallon jugs and my three gallon carboy, which I then wrap in a towel or two. Although it's a bit bigger than the gallon jugs I haven't had any problems using it, just use a few pieces of masking tape to hold it to the carboy. I have not tried with the five gallon bucket but I don't normally brew in that batch size much.

there's this https://www.amazon.com/Weekend-Brewer-COMINHKPR125665-Fermentation-Heater/dp/B01J1WZNM2/ref=sr_1_4?keywords=fermentation+heater&qid=1571247432&sr=8-4

which you could just leave rolled up on the bottom of the fridge. and you won't need much power so something like this aquarium heater is probably good enough

the stove top light i have, it might only be a 50 or 100w bulb, but it's enough to raise the temp of my fermentation jars by 5F just sitting on the stove top.

Just take any 5 gallon recipe and divide by 5 ( 5.5 # wheat malt = 1.1 #. As for temp control just Google son of a fermentation chiller. And Temperature Controller paired with a heater.

Now your recipes, Google the recipe you want ( IPA, Pilsner) or ask r/Homebrewing.

I also bought some MDF board, and built a box for the fan to go into. It was a little louder than I wanted it to be, so now it's really quite. I will add a picture for you to check it out.

Has anyone used one of these air sprayers from IT Dusters? I am thinking of getting one as I am fed up of buying canned air to dust the inside of my computer off. The reviews for it seem decent.

Can I use this instead of canned air?

Many years ago, I had that issue with a T2i. The screen backlight is part of your problem. On newer cameras you can flip out the screen, but for you turning down the brightness may help. I used an articulating clamp fan a few times as well, kinda like this just to keep air moving over the camera body.

Once we switched to cameras with articulating screens, the problem went away entirely.
