Try an alarm clock that deaf people use: http://www.amazon.com/Sonic-Alert-SB200ss-Alarm-Clock/dp/B000EX7LNM

I honestly have no idea on the intensity of this one or others, but they wake people up pretty well. My friend, who is deaf, has one and it would vibrate his entire bed and wake people up in the next room.

u/user2327 · 30 pointsr/fixit

I had this problem when I worked nights and slept during the day. Very noisy apartment neighbors. I ended up getting some really good ear plugs, a large fan for some dull noise, and picked up an alarm clock for deaf people. It has a vibrator extension that goes under your pillow.

Once I started doing all that I never had an issue sleeping again. This would be easier/quicker than messing with your door.

Good luck.

This is the alarm clock I got:

Micca MB42x + SMSL SA50 + Chromecast = about $194. You'd also need some speaker cable, and a 3.5mm to RCA cable.

Fluance SX6 if you want to bump up the speakers.

u/polypeptide147 · 20 pointsr/BudgetAudiophile

I'll make a list of stuff you need. For the best "bang for your buck" in the $200ish price range.

-----------------------------------------

Speaker wire. Amazon Basics makes great stuff. If you want, you can get 100 feet of it for an extra $2 I think. You can get those monoprice banana plugs if you want. They just help if you're going to be switching speakers around a lot.

Simple wire stripper. Should work just fine.

Cable to plug it in. That'll just plug the amp into a computer. And that cable is amazing quality. For real. I don't know what it is about it, but the moment I touched that cable I knew it was special. This isn't a joke either. You'll understand when you get one. Trust me.

50 watt per channel amp. This thing will be more than enough. I just like it because it is open box, so cheap. The same one new on amazon is $65. If you want to order from amazon, you can just get the smsl sa-36a. Same amp, just 20 watts per channel. Which, again, is plenty.

[Here's that cheaper smsl amp] https://www.amazon.com/dp/B017W13OR0/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_U2NSBbTRHGFS5). I've got a few of them. They're great. This is what I'd go for if the other one is sold out.

Cheap but good little amp. I don't have one of these because I'm not a fan of the looks, but they get great reviews and a lot of people really like them.

---------------

Speakers:

Miccas. These things are nice for that price. In this price range, you really won't be getting anything better unless you go DIY.

Fluance SX6. These guys are big, but they throw a good amount of sound and some pretty deep bass for a pair of bookshelf speakers. Careful, they're pretty big.

Pioneer. These things are decent, but I think the Fluances would be better for this price. The SX6s throw more bass, which is good if you're not getting a sub. However, these are smaller.

Fluance signature series. I know, you said your budget is only $200, but you said if you need to spend more, then you will. These will sound better than all of the other speakers linked, however, that's not why they're here. I put them here for two reasons. The first is that they're front ported. Most people that are new to speakers might put them up against a wall or close to it, not understanding that the port needs some room to breathe. These have front ports so that's not a problem. The second reason, just look at them. If you really care about looks, these ones are the ones. They're beautiful. (My opinion obviously).

Oof almost forgot. Pleaae don't place the speakers directly on your desk.

--------------------------------

That's a lot. I'll sum it up with my opinion and why.

Amp: smsl sa36a. For close range, you don't need anything with more power. This thing will do whatever you need for bookshelf speakers.

Speakers: micca mb42x. Why? Here's why: for this price range, you won't notice a huge difference in any speakers, unless you get some bad ones. So, get the cheapest ones you can. Later on, if you can afford to upgrade them, you'll probably want to do that. Then you'll have a pair of $80 speakers that you don't need rather than a pair of 130 speakers that you don't need. Another reason I would pick the miccas is because they punch above their price range. Most people say they sound more like a pair of $125 speakers rather than a pair of $80 speakers. So, for real, they're good. Also, they're the smallest of the bunch.

Or, build a pair of C Notes and get something way better than any of these.

Hope this helps!

Sonic Boom Alarm Clocks is your best option. Most deaf people (and hearing people who are heavy sleepers) use this. It basically has a vibrating disk you can put either under your pillow or mattress, and it will shake the bed when the alarm go off. Optionally, you can hook it up to a lamp which will flash a few times instead, or even pair it together.

u/homeboi808 · 12 pointsr/hometheater

Probably something like this then:

  • Receiver: Denon X1300 for $400, has Audyssey MultEQ XT and is the lowest Denon/Marantz model which will have Dolby Vision and HLG support (HLG likely being the format for HDR cable broadcasting).

  • Subwoofer: BIC F12 for $190+applicable tax.

That leaves about $400 for speakers:

  • Fronts: Fluance Signature bookshelves + matching center for $350 (same price if you get both in Walnut color on Amazon).

  • Surrounds: Dayton Air's for <$70.

If you want to downgrade the sub or receiver you can, the ones I picked are pretty much the crossing point between acceptable and commendable.

    For cables/wires:

    Wires: 100ft of 14awg oxygen-free.

Subwoofer cable: 25ft (get longer or shorter based on required distance).

Connectors: Open-screw banana plugs, these just make wiring simpler. Probably won't fit on the wall-mounted sides, but I'd get 2 orders, so all the fronts have connection as well as all 5 outputs from the receiver (so 8 pair), doing all the wiring normally is a pain in the ass. They work like so.

    Placement os speakers:

    • Front stereo: Aimed at your heads when sitting. Take your distance from the tv to your couch and multiply that by 0.6 (or 2 x tan(17^o )), that's the preferred minimum for how far apart the front speakers should be from each other, they should also be angled towards the center of the listening are (or halfway between that and being fully forward facing).

    • Center: As close to level with the tv as possible, angled to aim at your heads when sitting. When on a shelf/cabinet, move it as close forward as possible, you don't want it recessed.

    • Surrounds: Diagram, between perpendicular and 20^o pushed back, ideally aimed at the center of the seating. They are ideally mounted with the teeters being 2ft-3ft above the ear level.

    • Subwoofer: Do the sub crawl: Audioholics' video and Zeos' video. What I do is use an app and my AppleTV to play specific frequency notes, and then alternate between a handful of frequencies between 25Hz to 100Hz to see which spot best covers that range (I'd disconnect the fronts as well (pull out one banana plug from each stereo speaker)). My goto songs to test bass are 'Losin Control' by Russ (bass at 44s is damn good) and 'Big For Your Boots' by Stormzy(bass at like 25s and 38s is insane)

While not needed, a Harmony remote makes things so much easier, I have the 650.
u/cmasterflex · 12 pointsr/hometheater

This is what you are going to do

SMSL Q5 Pro Digital Amplifier - $120

ELAC - Debut B6 - $280

total: $400

leaves $200 from your budget to get cables, wall mounts for speakers, or a subwoofer. Or just put it all into bigger speakers.

With this setup you still have good viewing of the fireplace, but the entertainment system is not compromised. Also it leaves room for growth.

Or you can go here and mix and match whatever looks good to you.

u/lambda26 · 10 pointsr/emulation

So for those bummed out about this and are looking for alternatives here are a few options

  1. build one yourself with a raspberry pi
I would recommend using a RPi2 or RPI3 rather than the zero.
check out these subreddits for more info

    r/retropie

r/recalbox (my personal favorite os for emulation)

    r/lakka

  2. use an android box for emulation

    amazon fire tv

    Nvidia shield tv

    Emtec gembox

  3. use an old laptop or desktop
look on craigslist for old computers you can usually find one under $50 that will work just fine
both lakka os and recalbox os have x86 ports that run fine on desktop
i also recommend a bluetooth adapter and a 8bitdo controller

  4. if your looking for something more portable putting homebrew launcher on a 3ds or 2ds works really well
    check out r/3dshacks for that

anything by Sonic Alert is good.

u/Armsc · 10 pointsr/BudgetAudiophile

The UB5's certainly have gotten some very good reviews but at the current price of $500 I would seriously consider going with a different speaker. Yep you guessed it the KEF Q series comes right to the top of the list. These speakers are exceptional values consider the deep discount that is still going on.

The Q100 $300 is a very capable bookshelf speaker that is still small enough to be versatile. The larger Q300 $400 (currently in stock) promises better bass if you're going to for a 2.0 system.

Either one would be a great choice and would save you money over the UB5's right now. From what I've read either of the KEF will be as if not more accurate than the ELAC but will lack in the bass region. However, if you're not a bass heavy music fan or if you're willing to add a sub this is less of a deciding factor.

I also like the fact that you don't need a 4 ohm/ high power amp for these speakers. Any normal stereo receiver or AVR will push these just fine. You could even go with a mini amp but I would use the saved money to at least step up to a full receiver chassis.

Some amp options to consider would be these:

u/sprice54911 · 10 pointsr/diyaudio

But be warned, that place can be dangerous.

Here is my current set up:

AVR : Sony 7.2

Center : Klipsch RP-250C

Fronts : Klipsch R-14M

Rears : Klipsch R-14S

Sub : Bic America 12

I deff spent less than $1000 and I love my set up. One thing that saved me a lot of money was buying open box on Ebay from an authorized seller. The other nice thing about piecing it together like this is that you can very easily upgrade one set of speakers over time.

Dayton Audio C452-AIR Dual 4-1/2"

You won't want to upgrade for a long time.

u/picmandan · 8 pointsr/BudgetAudiophile

Depends on the type of setup you're looking for, the most common of which are 2.0, 2.1, or 5.1 (or more).

For simple stereo music listening, you'd need a 2 channel amplifier, (such as a the small and very inexpensive but decentish Lepai, or better the SMSL SA-50, or a full size receiver such as this Pioneer) and a way to play and input your music.

For that you could use your computer and an Aux cable, or you could use your phone and an inexpensive bluetooth receiver. This would be a 2.0 system (2 main speakers only, no sub).

You may wish to add a subwoofer for better reproduction of low frequencies. As the subs usually come with their own amplification, but accept high level (already amplified) inputs, you can just wire them together from the amplifier. This would be a 2.1 system.

Plus you need speaker wires and maybe wires for input (like Aux) depending on your setup.

For Home Theater plus music, you'd want a Home Theater receiver such as this Denon, that plays at least 5.1 channels (the .1 is for the subwoofer. This will give you a setup to power Left and Right front speakers, a Center Channel, plus 2 surround speakers. You still need a way to play your source, such as a CD player.

As u/smackdaddies pointed out, you could get four of these Pioneer speakers, plus the related center channel and a sub, plus the receiver, for under $500. It would be a pretty great sounding (budget) 5.1 system.

Once you decide on the type of setup you're interested, we can help you choose items here on r/BudgetAudiophile.

Without DAC, this cable: Monoprice 105597 3-Feet Premium Stereo Male to 2RCA Male $5 Link: http://amzn.com/B0094A1F3S

This is a great starter system, I would have loved to had something like this starting out.
All of these pieces can be upgraded, do your research. Look for sales etc. Good luck and have fun.

If a normal alarm clock doesn't wake you up, you might look into getting yourself one designed for the Deaf. That way, you wouldn't have to ask your NMom to wake you - because apparently, it is such a hardship for her...

u/no_talent_ass_clown · 8 pointsr/Seattle

Put a lock on your door.

Take the sheets and pillows off the bed.

Set a quiet alarm. Try this vibrating alarm clock that you put under your mattress.

ProTip: If they're letting 'friends' crash in your room without your consent then I'm guessing other sketch things are happening too. Lock your shit up or risk losing it.

u/StarkyA · 7 pointsr/diyaudio

Honestly, amps are one of the things that you're not going to get better quality for your your $ if you DIY.

DIY for fun, to learn or because you want to build something specific/oddball (like a 3 channel setup that I did once). If those are your goals by all means find a DIY project.
But, the fact you specifically stated you're looking for a cheap amp to power those speakers makes me think you're just looking for a cheap amp.

Also, spending that much money on an amp ($200) for a pair of speakers worth $130 is a bad way to spend your money to be honest. 50/20/20/10 budget split is the rule, speaker/room treatment/amp/everything else and when you can't or don't want to treat the room, then that budget goes into the speaker.

Get yourself an SMSL SA-50 for $66. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00A2QLGEQ/

You will have to get a receiver and with that budget, you will have to buy a refurbished receiver to get anything for your money. Amazon is selling a good yamaha 5.1 receiver below:

http://www.amazon.com/Yamaha-HTR-3066-R-5-1-Channel-Refurbished-Receiver/dp/B00IWURW6U/ref=sr_1_10?ie=UTF8&qid=1404937723&sr=8-10&keywords=yamaha+receiver

Then you can get a pair of bookshelf speakers to start:

http://www.amazon.com/Micca-MB42X-Bookshelf-Speakers-Tweeter/dp/B00E7H8GG2/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1404937847&sr=8-1&keywords=micca+speakers

This would be a pretty decent 2.0 setup. Over time you can purchase a subwoofer:

http://www.amazon.com/MartinLogan-Dynamo-300-Theater-Subwoofer/dp/B004LRPXAU/ref=sr_1_16?ie=UTF8&qid=1404938019&sr=8-16&keywords=subwoofer

This whole setup can be expanded to a 3.1, 4.1, or 5.1 setup by purchasing another set (or 2 sets) of bookshelf speakers.

TELEVISIONS

If you're into gaming the #1 thing to look for in a TV is low input lag

Here is a list of low lag TVs Looks like one of Sonys might be your best bet

  • Stat sheets tell you virtually nothing about picture quality, read reviews

  • You probably want a TV with: LED, local dimming, 120hz or higher

  • Avoid 4K for now (too new, too expensive, not enough content)

    AUDIO

    Get a receiver.

  • Denons are a great choice. Yamahas and Onkyos are good too

  • Buy refurbished, save $$$. Check out Accessories 4 Less & Amazon Warehouse

  • More watts ≠ more volume. Ignore ratings like 100 watts x 7 all together

  • Seriously. Any receiver will have more than enough juice

  • You probably don't need 7.1

  • You probably don't need 5.1 either. Buy a left/right pair & center channel speakers then add a subwoofer and surrounds later if you're not satisfied

    SPEAKERS

  • Pioneer BS22's + Pioneer C22 are a pretty great for the price

  • Micca MB42x not as good but cheaper

  • A Canadian company called Fluance is good too and less ugly

  • If you do a subwoofer check out the BIC America F-12

u/nacnudn · 6 pointsr/hometheater

$260 for those Miccas is borderline ridiculous. You can get much better speakers for less. I'd prefer either of the below for significantly less money:

u/000Destruct0 · 5 pointsr/hometheater

I'm not terribly familiar with the Canadian market being a yank and all but based on what I can find with a quick search I'd do this:

Receiver $330: https://www.amazon.ca/Yamaha-RX-V379BL-5-1-Channel-Receiver-Bluetooth/dp/B00XL2702K/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1463418043&sr=8-1&keywords=surround+receiver

L/R speakers $179: https://www.amazon.ca/Fluance-SX6-BK-Definition-Bookshelf-Loudspeakers-Black/dp/B00IEDL8EM/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&qid=1463418420&sr=8-4&keywords=fluance+speakers

Center channel $105: https://www.amazon.ca/Fluance-Definition-Two-way-Surround-Systems-Black/dp/B00Y34U4D2/ref=sr_1_21?ie=UTF8&qid=1463418420&sr=8-21&keywords=fluance+speakers

Subwoofer $170: https://www.amazon.ca/Polk-Audio-10-Inch-Monitor-Subwoofer/dp/B0002KVQBA/ref=sr_1_3?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1463418520&sr=1-3&keywords=subwoofer

Normally I don't recommend Polk subwoofers but your pricing up there is so mangled this would appear to be the best budget option. You might be able to save a few bucks by going directly to Fluance since they are a Canadian company, either way they come with a lifetime warranty and are excellent budget options - better than the Pioneer Andrew Jones lineup.

u/BeardedAlbatross · 5 pointsr/BudgetAudiophile

Alright, your TV has RCA outputs and the option of fixed or variable output through there. If you wanted you could just grab two JBL LSR305 and connect them with RCA to TRS cables. Probably $450 total but would sound much better than the miccas. Go into your TV audio settings and select variable audio out. This way you can change volume through your TV remote. Just set the amp on the back of the JBL speakers to 8 or so and never touch them again.

If you want to go the passive speaker route for upgradability then you can grab a stereo receiver like this Yamaha for $200. Just plug your TV in with RCA cables. This allows you to spend an extra $100 on speakers. You'll save even more money if you look through your local listings for a used receiver. If you like the Klipsch sound you can go for these. Otherwise look through your local listing for a good tower speaker that you can afford. I was going to recommend the Pioneer FS52 but a pair of those would go over your budget. You can try pairing them with a cheap SMSL amp, but I would be worried they would distort a tad early.

The best sounding setup out of the box would be the JBL LSR305, but it's also the least upgradeable setup.

u/realmain · 5 pointsr/BudgetAudiophile

I personally don't know much about the Micca MB42, but the Klipsch R-15M is $187 right now. the Klipsch R-14M is $170. I really like the sound of the Klipsch R-15M.

u/brianf408 · 5 pointsr/BudgetAudiophile

First step: have you read noaudiophile's reviews? He does very thorough reviews on a lot of budget speakers, and has corrections for many of the popular options. His corrections for the Infinity P163s that I'm currently using made them sound like completely different speakers.

First let's start with powered options:

The Micca PB42X would be a good option. They are basically a powered version of the MB42X so you don't need to purchase a separate amp. Also in the similar realm that get recommended here a lot would be the Swans D1010 and the Edifier R1280T.

Personally I'm a bigger fan of passive speakers, as you get a lot more options to expand your system.

Pioneer BS22 bookshelf speakers are great and have gone on sale quite a bit lately for $70-80/pair.

Dayton B652 I am currently using as my surround speakers, but people rave about them as a budget desktop option

Micca MB42X also get great reviews.

You could also go used for your speakers, but sometimes it can be hard to parse through all the junk out there if you don't know what you're looking for.

Take any of those passive options and pair them up with an inexpensive amp like this SMSL or Lepai for a good budget setup.

I would also recommend checking your local Craigslist or Facebook marketplace for a used receiver, you could pick up a very decent one for just a few bucks and have a great starting setup. This will give you a lot more powerful amp, and the ability later to easily add a subwoofer or expand to surround sound. Personally I'm using an older Sony home theater receiver at my desk, it's old enough that it doesn't have HDMI or optical inputs, someone was just giving it away so I snagged it.

u/Jr712 · 5 pointsr/hometheater

I personally am more open to sound bars than many people here, I have one on all of my TVs except my main HT system.

That being said, if this is your main HT system I'd see if you can swing this:

Denon AVR-S530BT Refurb Receiver for $150:
https://www.accessories4less.com/make-a-store/item/denavrs530bt/denon-avr-s530bt-5.2-ch-x-70-watts-bluetooth-a/v-receiver/1.html

Pair of Micca MB42X speakers for $90:
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00E7H8GG2

Total = $240

If you absolutely can't go much above $200 then get the Dayton Audio B652-AIR speakers for $67 at the link below or get the above speakers used on Amazon for a little cheaper.
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00NOA58RS

The nice thing about the Micca's is they have a matching center channel (on the same Amazon page) that you could add later on to upgrade your system. And with that receiver you could eventually add a center, a sub, and 2 rear speakers for a full 5.1 surround setup. Even if you don't want anything more than 2.0 anytime soon it's best to give yourself options down the road in case you change your mind.

u/thewaxbandit · 5 pointsr/vinyl

So I'm trying to figure out how you have those powered speakers wired up and I'm assuming you are running your turntable into the phono pre and then possibly using the tape output to send a signal to the powered computer speakers? If so, you are effectively using the receiver as a giant phono preamp and nothing more.

You seem like somebody that probably has sixty bucks.......do you have sixty bucks?

If you have sixty bucks, do yourself a favour and buy these:

https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B00NOA58RS/ref=mp_s_a_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1492311449&sr=8-2&pi=AC_SX236_SY340_QL65&keywords=dayton+audio+speakers&dpPl=1&dpID=41rcGu0d4FL&ref=plSrch

You already have everything you need and I doubt you will find better speakers for $60 (read the reviews) unless you scour the used market.

u/turdfergusonpdx · 5 pointsr/BudgetAudiophile

easier to just throw out a few recommendations. the OP can take them or leave them afterall.

on a tight budget it's hard to beat these Micca's.

a step up from there would be Fluance. They're nearly twice as large but also exceptional for the price.

u/popsicle_of_meat · 5 pointsr/hometheater

>And I don’t understand speaker setups all that much.

That's your biggest hurdle right there. What are you wanting? I've ran a good stereo-only home theater, and a good 2.1 setup before. I'd rather have either of those than a poor quality 5.1.

Soundbars typically replace quality with quantity. They became popular when TVs started getting real thin and having crap sound. a $2-300 powered speaker setup will have better sound. And if you don't want wires around the room, that's a good place to start.

Get something like these Klipsch R-15PM. You can use them now as-is and add a sub later. That will be a pretty damn solid 2.1 setup.

Or get an AMP and separate SPEAKERS. (Just examples). You can have a good system pretty easily.

If you must get a 2.1, then I suggest getting the Logitech Z623. It is good for gaming, but not great for music. You can pick it up at Best Buy or Amazon for $99

https://www.amazon.com/Logitech-Z623-Watt-Speaker-System/dp/B003VAHYTG/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1540214631&sr=8-1&keywords=z623

If you want good sound quality for music, then I suggest either of the following systems in your budget:

Passive system:

Polk T15 Speakers - $70

https://www.amazon.com/Polk-Audio-T15-Bookshelf-Speakers/dp/B002RJLHB8/ref=sr_1_1_sspa?ie=UTF8&qid=1540214644&sr=8-1-spons&keywords=polk+t15&psc=1

and

Lepai LP-2020TI Amp - $25

https://www.amazon.com/Lepai-LP-2020TI-Instruments-TPA3118-Amplifier/dp/B071FJF4FF/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1540214708&sr=8-1&keywords=lepai+lp2020ti

Speaker wire & 3.5mm to 3.5mm cable

Powered system:

Edifier R1280T Speakers

https://www.amazon.com/Edifier-R1280T-Powered-Bookshelf-Speakers/dp/B016P9HJIA/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1540214772&sr=8-2&keywords=r1280t

Sound quality is not a term I would use to describe either.

In both cases we are talking about a bunch of $5 "full range" drivers stuffed in a tiny housing. Up-firing Atmos doesn't work well with the best of speakers, so having them in a soundbar adds no value.

I will recommend a cheap pair of bookshelf speakers and external amp instead.

https://www.amazon.com/Sony-SSCS5-3-Driver-Bookshelf-Speaker/dp/B00O8YLMVA/

https://www.amazon.com/S-M-S-L-AD18-Amplifier-Bluetooth-Subwoofer/dp/B071JN7GXN

You could also get a used AV receiver to save some money on the amp and get better speakers instead. If your budget allows, also get an entry level subwoofer like a Dayton SUB-1200 for $150.

u/zim2411 · 5 pointsr/AVdeals

> Better than built-in TV speakers, cheaper than a 2.1 setup

That's not setting a high standard. If you have analog output from your TV, get a small amp for $70, and a pair of bookshelf speakers for $130, and you'll get far better sound quality than this soundbar.

I use an AmazonBasics Bluetooth adapter with a nice set of 2.1 Creative PC speakers.

The adapter has the quirk of always reconnected to Echo Dot's Bluetooth if it's turned on. The speakers never go to sleep. The sound is excellent, and there's a subwoofer with adjustable bass so that my Amazon Music Unlimited account is put to good use.

It's about $45 for a set of those speakers used, and $20 for the Bluetooth Adapter. Alternately, Creative updated that model of speakers with Bluetooth built in, so you could go for that-- But I already had the previous model, and I can't vouch for how the Bluetooth works in the newer model.

Either way, the $20 adapter is great if you already have good speakers that you know don't go to sleep.

u/jallsopp · 5 pointsr/audiophile

I couldn't tell you anything about the system and how good it is. I can however show you how to make it bluetooth compatible. With a slight bit of looking, I belive this is the rear of the bottom unit?

>Because I don't really own any CDs and have never used a tape.

You don't need the top two units connected if you want to save space. All you'll need to get bluetooth up and running is a bluetooth receiver, like this AmazonBasics one. If you choose not to use the CD player, the little bluetooth receiver will just plug into the back of the amplifier under CD using the RCA to 3.5mm cable provided. Remember that red is right (R) and black is left (L).

u/sherm137 · 5 pointsr/ZReviews

They are solid, but just be aware, that Z only recommends those with different ear pads. https://www.amazon.com/Brainwavz-Velor-Memory-Replacements-Earpads/dp/B00MFDX4YO. It's an extra expense (only $20) but it might put you out of budget.

Also, you will want to eventually save up for an amp/dac combo unless you have a great motherboard. Most motherboards will be able to power the m40x, but you won't get the most out of them. A solid entry-level amp/dac is here: https://www.amazon.com/FX-Audio-Optical-Coaxial-Amplifier/dp/B072JJT7SF/ref=sr_1_3?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1549221478&sr=1-3&keywords=fx+audio+dac-x6

Also, the Cloud Hyperx 2 are actually some decent headphones. I'm not sure you will be getting that much of an upgrade going to m40x. If it's an option, wait, save up $50 and buy the Sennheiser hd58x Jubilees on Massdrop. You seriously won't regret it and your mind will be blown.

For audio may I suggest the HD58x and a cheap amp/dac like this one.

If you look around you should be able to get a Windows license for $50 ish.

u/thesuper88 · 5 pointsr/DIY

FWIW or if it might help I got this from Amazon and it puts out some decent sound. You'd be able to mount it right to the same board as that receiver is on I'd assume.

u/Muffikins · 5 pointsr/facepalm

I have this, the Sonic Alert an alarm for people who are hard of hearing that vibrates the bed, it's amazing! My boyfriend is deaf and he introduced me to them. You put the puck under your mattress or pillow. It shakes everything and unless you are on horse tranquilizers, you will wake up in the morning. I used to be the kind of person who would set several alarms all over their room, and still not wake up. My bf had the analog clock, which could not differentiate between AM & PM. I got the digital one while still in college (we lived 1.5 hours apart) and never missed a morning after that. I didn't need my mama to whoop my ass in the morning any more. ;)

Took the digital one with me when I moved out, it is still going strong 2+years later. I'm not affiliated with them, I never see this topic and am excited. I used to have a real problem. Your friend probably likes theirs a lot too!

u/alittlegnome · 5 pointsr/Advice

Try the Screaming Meanie. Truck drivers use it to wake up because their sleep schedules and pretty much everything about truck driving makes it both very difficult and very important to wake up. It has the added bonus of being portable.

There's also the Sonic Boom Bedshaker Alarm Clock, which is made my a manufacturer of alarm clocks for deaf people. It wakes you up by vibrating your bed and, optionally, beeping really loudly (not as horrible as the meanie though, and more precise volume adjustments.) I have one of these and it works great!

I've also seen the SmartShaker, which is a Bedshaker that connects to your phone via Bluetooth. Personally haven't tried it and I doubt that something that runs on batteries could shake me awake, however, but it could be worth a try.

If you have trouble with going back to bed after waking up to an alarm or turning off alarms in your sleep, I recommend getting an app that requires you to take pictures or scan barcodes. If you need the phone's ringer to be louder for the alarm, try hooking it up to a speaker.

You might also consider getting an old fashioned [Analogue Alarm Clock](
http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B00PD38UDI/ref=mp_s_a_1_9?qid=1448166430&sr=8-9&pi=AC_SX110_SY165&keywords=sonic+boom+alarm+clock). Those fuckers are loud and percussive and and don't have a snooze button. There's nothing like actual metal clanging together to wake you up in the morning.

If you have some money to spend, maybe a Sunlight simulation alarm would work for you. It simulates the gradual rising of the sun, but at whatever time you need the sun to rise and without having to leave your blinds open at night, with street lights bothering you and such.

Finally, I've found that the very best way for me to wake up is for my husband (or anybody really) to bring me a cup of tea. He can get still-mostly-asleep me to sit up and take the tea, and then I have to wake most of the way up to avoid spilling hot liquid all over myself, and then I fully wake up as I drink it. Obviously, this one is dependent on living with another person and having morning schedules that work together, which may not work for you.

Anyways, as a fellow heavy sleeper, I give you all I know about not sleeping through being a functioning member of society. :)

u/chickensandwich77 · 5 pointsr/jobs

I had similar issues in the past with sleeping through alarms and tardiness, so I bought one of these. It's been 3 years, and it's still doing its job!

u/utd_cometacc · 4 pointsr/BudgetAudiophile

I would recommend that or this above anything made by SMSL. The quality is leagues better.

u/nevermind4790 · 4 pointsr/vinyl

That player should have a preamp if I remember correctly. So all you would really need from there is a receiver and speakers. If you get a receiver with a phono input, turn the preamp off on the record player and make sure to use that input in the back. If it doesn't, you'll need to turn the preamp on.

Here's what I mean, this receiver has a phono input while this one doesn't (at least it doesn't list one and the back inputs don't say). I'm not saying buy either of these or that they're great cause I really don't know, I'm just using them as examples.

You'll hear from a lot of people around here to look for vintage equipment. I would agree with that. In that case you'll want to scour craigslist, ebay, garage sales, etc.. You can probably get a great vintage receiver for ~$50 (not sure what that is in pounds) if you do some looking. Just don't expect HDMI inputs and the like.

For speakers there are a lot of options. Don't cheap out and use crappy speakers. Buy some nice bookshelf speakers; I say bookshelf speakers instead of floorstanding speakers because those seem to be the most used for a 2 speaker set up. I'm not sure what brand most people use around here. I have some Yamaha's from the 90's that I absolutely love. Vintage speakers can also be found for less than new speakers.

But what receiver and speakers you should buy really comes down to what sound and usage YOU want. A 2/3/4/5 speaker set up? Subwoofer? Do you also want to use your receiver for your computer's and/or TV's sound?

u/DieselWang · 4 pointsr/hometheater

In-wall and in-ceiling are compromises in terms of audio quality. For the best sound quality for your money, I'd recommend discrete speakers out in the open. If you go this route, here is one possible build:

u/Fauxhawkism · 4 pointsr/vinyl

How do you like those speakers? I was thinking about buying myself a pair. They're the Klipsch R-14M's right?

u/jamalstevens · 4 pointsr/BudgetAudiophile

Klipsch r-15pm's might do you pretty good.

Some people dont like the klipsch horns but I really enjoy my rp-280f's. Might want to add a sub to that if you want better bass, but that's a concern with all the speakers you listed as well.

u/ldeas_man · 4 pointsr/audio

well to start, those are crap speakers either way. two 3.5" woofers means they will have zero bass, which completely defeats the purpose of tower speakers

second, you screwed up by not doing proper research. most speakers (aka passive speakers) have wire terminals where you connect them to an amplifier

you can buy a cheap amp on Amazon for $20 which will work. but my honest recommendation is to sell those speakers for whatever you can get and getting these Dayton bookshelf speakers and this Lepai amp. it'll sound better than those 'towers' and take up less room. yes, it'll cost a bit more (depending on what you can sell the Monster towers for), but if you plan on listening to anything bass heavy, you'll appreciate the better quality speakers (note: yes I know the B652s don't measure anywhere near flat, but for a layman, they're a good first step)

u/Ker_Splish · 4 pointsr/needadvice

Try this little fella. I had a similar problem when I was deployed back in the day. Are you getting too much or too little PT? That can mess with your sleep cycles if you vary it too much. Also, ask your squad leader or platoon sergeant if you can try the night shift, you might be able to find a shift that more naturally fits your circadian rhythm.

If it's your first deployment, especially if it's one of your first real times being away from home, you're going to hit a point where you realize that you really don't want to be there. It's ok, that's natural and it happens. The problem is when your not wanting to be there interferes with your ability to Soldier up, drive on and get your ass to work. Just focus on doing your time and taking your lumps, the deployment can't last forever, even though it's going to feel like it.

Keep on keepin on, troop.

u/cucumbers · 4 pointsr/needadvice

My brother has had some success with a bed-shaking alarm clock like this one.

I also have a hard time hearing/reacting to an alarm clock in the morning. When I lived in a dorm in college, I slept in the bottom bunk. I tied a piece of string dangling down from the bed-frame above me, long enough to hang right in front of my face while I slept. I rubber-banded my phone to the string and set the volume to maximum volume & vibrate. It went off right next to my face, little painful but it worked.

u/ZeosPantera · 4 pointsr/diyaudio

Well yes you can get a t-amp($50) and a small powered sub($130). The next step would truly be better speakers. I am sure those are atrocious.

u/heytherecutiemcbooty · 4 pointsr/audiophile

I'm a noobie. The only speaker system I've had before is a [Logitech z623 Computer speakers] (https://www.logitech.com/en-us/product/speaker-system-z623?crid=47) which was satisfactory until the subwoofer started rattling at high volumes and one of the speakers stopped working. I want to get a full set-up so I've been learning everything I can. I want a good set up for house parties, generally playing rap and electronic music. My budget is $250-500.
Willing to buy used, just always paranoid I'll buy something in bad shape.

These are the parts that I am currently contemplating buying:

Speakers -- I can't decide between tower or bookshelf. I have read that bookshelf speakers can be a better bang for your buck, so I would love some suggestions. Speakers are suppose to be the most important part of the set up so I've tried to pick out decent options, but very willing to go cheap if there are any good deals.

Bookshelf option:

u/explosivo563 · 4 pointsr/BudgetAudiophile

What about pioneer? Is that an option? I got the Andrew Jones model for around $100 at best buy. Nothing earth rattling for a massive home theater but it's obviously a step up from just bookshelf speakers. Solid for a small room/bedroom.

I think an amp and passive speakers would be the best. The RCA would plug directly in the amp.

Check out /r/zeos for a decent overview.

I am looking at getting the fluance sx6 ($100 after coupon), and. $70 amp shortly. You may be able to get away with cheaper speakers such as Daytons or Micca.

Edit: I am just starting to learn about audio setups, if I said something wrong please correct me, I want to learn.
There are no professional reviews on the fluance sx6, they do have grew reviews on amazon / other retail websites. I have the original EMP tech 5.1 system. I will do a comparison of the EMP tech speakers to the fluance for my computer setup, and get back to you guys. This will be after Xmas though.

All in one systems are just a step above HTiB systems in regards to quality. The only advantage is that you don't have to get an entirely new system if something fails. What do you have currently? It's possible that there's enough to use to fill in while you save up for more components.

With a $700 budget, here's what I'd recommend:

Receiver ($189.99): Denon s710 Receiver

Subwoofer ($138.00) Dayton 1200 12" subwoofer

Speakers option 1 ($89.99 + $96.99) Pioneer Andrew Jones Bookshelf pair + Pioneer Andrew Jones Center

Speakers option 2 ($229.99 + $179.99) [ELAC B5 Bookshelf pair](http://www.amazon.com/Debut-Bookshelf-Speakers-Andrew-Jones/dp/B014GSER6O/ref=sr_1_7?ie=UTF8&qid=1453949947&sr=8-7&keywords=B014GSEPY8%7CB014GSEQ06%7CB014GSEQ2O%7CB014GSEQCY%7CB 014GSEQWE%7CB014GSER6O%7CB014GSEUJ8%7CB014GSEVFQ) + ELAC Center Channel

Option 1 total: $514.97 without shipping, taxes, or accessories. The Pioneer speakers are among the best budget speakers around right now, especially on sale. Some people think they sound a little veiled, so if super crisp highs are your thing, I'd consider alternatives.

Option 2 total: $737.97 without shipping, taxes, or accessories. Yes, a little over budget assuming $700 is your limit. However, it's worth it for the increased sound quality. The ELAC Debut series are one of the hottest speaker lines out there right now, and most reviewers agree that they're worth every penny. There are also alternatives in this ballpark by EMP Tek, Chane, Infinity, etc.

Why no rears? You sacrifice too much in the front speakers by trying to get the whole system at once in the budget. As a matter of fact, if you wanted to you could skip the center channel as well and just buy a 2.1 to start. Remember though that any system you buy needs to be the same series across the front three. You can either purchase identical speakers for the rears later, or look at dipole/bipole speakers, or purchase some cheap speakers off Craigslist for rears. Now, all of this is assuming that you don't have any audio gear. If you already have some older bookshelf speakers, you can use those for surrounds, etc.

u/shadyinternets · 3 pointsr/hometheater

$70 & prime eligible. and if you want the matching speakers they arent too expensive either.

https://smile.amazon.com/Pioneer-SP-C22-Designed-Channel-Speaker/dp/B008NCD2EI?

the andrew jones pioneers are great for the money. ive got a couple sets around the house and have given some away as gifts too.

u/spin_the_baby · 3 pointsr/audiophile

They are not "powered" speakers, and as such require an amplifier to function at audible levels. Your piano probably does have a speaker amplifier built in, but it uses that to power the internal speakers. You will need an external amplifier (like a receiver) to connect your speakers to the RCA line output (red and white connectors) on your piano. The /r/audiophile recommended cheap amplifiers are the MUSE M50 or SMSL SA-50. You will need an RCA male to male cable and speaker wire of 14ga or 16ga, which you can get on amazon or monoprice.

u/Hipp013 · 3 pointsr/BudgetAudiophile

College kid here, I'll try to help out.

It's generally recommended that you don't ever go for a HTIAB (home theater in a box) as they come with super shitty components and most often don't leave room to upgrade.

You'll get more flexibility and bang for your buck with bookshelves and a sub, but as you mentioned you only want a 2.0 for right now. If bass is really that important to you, I would actually recommend you get a pair of bookshelves now and invest in a sub later on. Towers are great but for a 2.0 setup you're going to want something smaller with better sound quality.

---

Bookshelves: used Polk Signature S15's

>Top listing is $165 for like new speakers; S15's run for $229/pair new.

This listing in particular says "Speakers only, nothing else is included" which is odd for them to mention because I don't think these speakers normally come with any accessories. Maybe he's talking about the manual which can easily be found online. But who needs manuals anyway?

Amp: SMSL SA-50

>Price fluctuates between $63 and $69. This listing is $63.

Puts out 50 wpc, will power pretty much any speaker you throw at it. I owned this myself and recommend it for a first setup. Just keep in mind you will have to upgrade to a surround receiver if you ever want to move past 2.1 in the future.

---

This puts you at $228 shipped. A bit above your absolute max of $200, but this is probably your best bet. You're also going to need to buy some speaker wire. It's only like $8.

So in total, this comes to $236 shipped. A bit above your budget, but it leaves you with some kickass bookshelves as well as the ability to add a sub in the future.

u/I3igAl · 3 pointsr/ZReviews

I would love to!

For the amp I am using the SMSL Q5 Pro as linked by /u/Hercusleaze and I am very happy with it. I bought it especially for the optical input and remote control to use with my xbox alongside my PC. A very good feature is a dedicated sub out, really makes adding a sub simple.

If you dont need all the fancy DAC built in I would highly recommend the SMSL SA36A, SA50, or SA98 depending on the power you want (this depends on how loud you want to get and what your speakers need).

For speakers I am using a pair of Micca MB42X-C in 2.0, although I got them for half off. Most people recommend Micca MB42X, a very solid all rounder at a good entry price. I set my brother with the Fluance SX-6 speakers, and he is really happy with them although they are bass heavy.

These options are solid entry level gear, and for myself I havent needed/felt like upgrading further. If you are looking for something a bit higher end I would suggest checking out the /r/Zeos guide lists or make a dedicated thread!

u/GbMaxSE · 3 pointsr/hometheater

$300 isn't a great budget for L/C/R, really. It's more than enough for something cheap, like the micca MB42x, Pioneer Andrew Jones, etc. But it's not enough for something of true quality.

The best value, and my firm recommendation for $250ish is the Sony Core Series Bookshelves at $118 a pair and the Matching Sony Core Series Center speaker for $118.

  • $325 will get you Polk S15 L/R + Polk S30 C
  • $360 will get you HTD Level 2 L/C/R
  • $370 Will get you Elac B4 with a C5 center

These have been getting some good user reviews lately and a nice price too, and a pretty small cabinet for a 6.5 inch woofer, 79.99 / pair: 2 Pack 6.5" Bookshelf Home Theater Speakers 100W RMS TP160S-CH DCM by MTX Audio

As for amp's I have two of these (on two different computer systems), Dayton Audio APA 150. This is a serious Class A/B design topology, but no frills, just a well built, serious, "old school" heavy amp. No remote, no DAC, no Bluetooth, but WOW, a really nice, serious, amp! Lots of good user reviews and recommendations all over the net.

A often recommended smaller digital amp S.M.S.L AD18. This one DOES have it all, remote, DAC, bluetooth, relatively small, great reviews all over the net.

If you are really on a budget, try something similar to Lepai LP-2020TI Digital Hi-Fi Audio Mini Class D Stereo Amplifier. Do some searches for tweaking this amp, a very simple way to improve this amp, is to buy a more powerful power brick. There are many versions of this type of amp, amazon, ebay, parts-express, look around.

The other two, often recommended, "great value" speakers that work well with a computer (but you will need an amp), are the Sony SSCS5 3-Way 3-Driver Bookshelf Speaker System (Pair). I have seen these on sale for well under 100/pair, from memory, in the 60's and 70's.

Another great value is the Pioneer SP-BS22-LR Andrew Jones Designed Bookshelf Loudspeakers(7-1/8” x 12-9/16” x 8-7/16” & weighs 9 lbs 2 oz). Again, search around, these do go on sale for well under 100.00.

I have both the Pioneer and the Sony, and I currently am using the Sony SSCS5 with the Dayton Audio Amp. Was temped to buy the DCM, but I have to stop buying "great value" speakers. If I ever want to upgrade my computer speakers, I should save up and buy the Ascend Audio Luna Reference Ribbon Mini-Monitor.

Good luck, have fun, and Enjoy!

Fair enough.

With your budget I'd say something like this....

Receiver: Denon S540BT for $150 fro A4L

Subwoofer: Dayton Sub1500 for $198

that leaves you $120 to $150 for a pair of bookshelf speakers. Not the best budget in the world (prefer $300/pair) but for that range

Kilpsch R-15M's

Polk Audio TSi100's

If you can find them on sale the ELAC Debut 2.0's

They'll be slightly above $500 but not by much.

The Nobsound Mini Bluetooth for an amp. Possibly even smaller, built in DAC, BT, more watts, and all the cables outside of speaker wire are included. You can literally just run the micro USB to USB type A from the amp to your computers USB in. I've had 3 of the varying brandings of this amp and for around $30 it cannot be beat.

https://www.amazon.com/AmazonBasics-16-Gauge-Speaker-Wire-Feet/dp/B006LW0WDQ/

That leaves about $800 for your LRC and subwoofer.

My favorites in this price range are the Pioneer Andrew Jones series and the Sony SSCS series:

https://www.amazon.com/Pioneer-SP-C22-Designed-Channel-Speaker/dp/B008NCD2EI/

https://www.amazon.com/Sony-SSCS8-3-Driver-Channel-Speaker/dp/B00O8YLNRS

Now for either one, there's only a single choice for your center channel.

However, for the left and right channels, you can either go with floor stand speakers or bookshelf speakers.

Floorstanding speakers would be the ideal choice, but they are larger. If you are in an apartment where space is tight, you might need to get bookshelf speakers for left and right channels.

Which you choose will end up determining what budget range you are in for the subwoofer. So which will it be for you?

My advise is that if you are unsure right, then go with the bookshelf speakers. Because that gives you the option to change your mind in the future. If you get the bookshelf speakers right now and end up being disappointed with their performance as front channels, then you can repurpose them as the surround channels down the road and buy the floor standing speakers for the front left and right.

With your budget, if you don't want to go modular and add the pieces as you go along and get a 5.1 right away, think this seems like a decent package that you'll be very happy with for a good couple of years:

These Pionneer towers x2

And the surrounds

And center that go with the set

This sub seems very well liked around here

The amp you mentionned (I have had RX-V657 for years, very good) is also very good an will be plenty

rest on cables and stuff if you need, go to http://www.monoprice.com

All that should come in around your budget!

Cheers and have fun!

What would you think of this as a good starting point:

Not sure about "plug and play", but I'll try.

Denon S530BT - $150

Dayton 1200 Subwoofer - $150

Pioneer AJ Towers FS52 - $97/each

Pioneer AJ Center $99

Dayton B52AIR - $46 - Surrounds

or

Jamo 3.1 $499

The Denon Receiver and the Dayton Surrounds.

Just my two cents, you could do the Best Buy $300 on speakers and like you said get whatever 5.1+ receiver elsewhere. Best Buy will price match Amazon if it's "shipped and sold" by Amazon. So for example you could get the Pioneer towers and center channel for around $300:

Pioneer SP-FS52 Andrew Jones Tower each $110 Amazon (x2 for $220) / $125 Best Buy (x2 for $250)

https://www.amazon.com/Pioneer-SP-FS52-Designed-standing-Loudspeaker/dp/B008NCD2S4/

http://www.bestbuy.com/site/pioneer-5-1-4-floor-speaker-each-black/5086937.p?skuId=5086937

Pioneer SP-C22 Andrew Jones Center channel $85 Amazon / $95 Best Buy

https://www.amazon.com/Pioneer-SP-C22-Designed-Channel-Speaker/dp/B008NCD2EI/

http://www.bestbuy.com/site/pioneer-dual-4-center-channel-speaker-black/5086891.p?skuId=5086891

Total if you Amazon price match = $305 before tax

EDIT: just be sure to factor in cables/speaker wire to total budget, and make sure everything will fit and has a proper place to be setup. and don't overlook a universal remote if that's an option/need. :)

EDIT 2: OK so this doesn't satisfy the need for surround. So you could throw in cheap surrounds for now as well. Top 100 Amazon satellite speakers, others on here may have cheap suggestions?:

https://www.amazon.com/Best-Sellers-Electronics-Satellite-Speakers/zgbs/electronics/3236454011#1

EDIT 3: And here's the matching bookshelf speakers if you wanted to match them up for the surrounds, swap these in front as a cheaper alternative to the towers, or both... for pair $110 Amazon / $125 Best Buy:

I doubt you'd find better for active speakers. You might consider the R1280DB, however (it's the same speaker plus bluetooth - maybe useful for you, maybe not).

Don't totally write off getting a setup with an amplifier. You can get tiny, cheap amplifiers (SMSL SA-36A is an example, or the Breeze Audio TPA3116 amp for something even cheaper) and pair it with a set of cheap bookshelf speakers. In my case, the amp is zip-tied to the underside of my desk so it's both completely invisible, and super-easy for me to reach the volume knob.

The advantage of this approach is more versitility in amp features and speaker selection, and the fact that speakers themselves will last decades if treated well. If a cable gets damaged, you can replace it. If the amp dies, you can replace it and keep the speakers. If you break the speakers somehow, you don't need to buy a new amp. If you want more input options (like bluetooth or optical or whatever), you can just upgrade the amp and keep the speakers. Want surround sound, or a sub? Just add it to your existing gear, without buying everything again.

In the long run, you'll save money because you won't throw the whole setup out when one component dies.

Found this price drop recently! Normally they're somewhere between $120-150, but they've been dropped. I think Best Buy is having a sale? Also available on Amazon for a similar price. I have BS22 speakers and I'll be ordering from Amazon to try them out.

I've heard terrible things about the Roku Vue app.

If you can, return the Roku and grab a Fire TV. My experience has been outstanding thus far, and overall, the Fire TV is a much more immersive and cohesive experience than the Roku.

It has the TV guide that you're looking for to see what's upcoming and all that good stuff.

u/kirinaz · 3 pointsr/phoenix

I canceled cable about 15 months ago now. I got an Amazon FireTV box which has access to a bunch of apps like NetFlix, etc. and then I got a SlingTV subscription. Between Netflix and Amazon Prime and all the apps and YouTube, I don't miss having cable.

u/joekewle · 3 pointsr/htpc

So, since I'm the only one reading the full requirements of his post... The Shield will NOT do Amazon Prime. The Amazon Fire supports 4k, Netflix, and Amazon Prime. You should do research to make sure the apps along with the unit, together, does 4k.

JBL LSR305 would be a pretty good choice, and you'll have some extra dough left afterwards. If you have multiple sources you'll probably need something like the Schitt Sys to switch inputs, though the SYS only takes two inputs.

You can also consider the SMSL Q5 amp, which has a bunch of inputs. For matching bookshelf speakers you can look at the Emotiva B1, Philharmonic AA Monitor, Kef Q100. Downside is that the amp isn't terribly powerful, so volume might be a problem. Your listening distance doesn't seem like it'll be very far so you should be fine.

Boom

Otherwise we'd need to know what inputs your sub has. Some subs have speaker level inputs/ouputs that let you wire your speaker in series, others just have RCA inputs.

u/picacat · 3 pointsr/hometheater

Is there room on the sides of the TV for speakers? Ideally they would be a couple feet to either side of the TV.

You probably just want to go with a 3.1 system, because the placement of the surrounds will be so wonky with a corner L-shaped couch and a corner TV that I don't think it would be worth it. You could do in-ceiling speakers, and do a 3.1.2 system though. https://www.dolby.com/us/en/guide/speaker-setup-guides/3.1.2-overhead-speakers-setup-guide.html

For $1,000 3.1.2 system I would get this:
Receiver - $300 (doesn't have eARC, but you probably don't need it)
Front L/R speakers - $200
Front center - $170
in-ceiling speakers - $80
Subwoofer - $250

If cutting holes into your ceiling to install speakers and run wiring is a daunting task, then just do a 3.1 system and you can spend more on the subwoofer. If you can push your budget this very high quality SVS PB-1000 subwoofer goes on sale on the outlet site for $400 several times a year, I imagine it will during labor day subwoofer option 2 - $400. It will be infinitely better than the $250 one linked above.

u/jvorn · 3 pointsr/hometheater

No worries, this just means a 2.1 or 3.1 is perfect for now, and then you can add on later.

Option 1:

2x RSL CG3 Bookshelf @ $135 = $270

1x RSL Speedwoofer 10s (sold out until Oct) @ $400

1x Denon AVR-X3500H 7.2-Ch x 105 Watts A/V Receiver from Accessories4Less @ $500

Total: $1170

Less of a budget stretcher, giving up a bit of performance. That receiver is realistically future proof (supports 7.2, 4k) and wouldn't need to upgrade for quite some time. More clear upgrade path however. In this scenario, when you want to upgrade, you get 3x RSL CG23s to be your new front speakers and move the CG3 you already own to the sides as your surrounds.

Option 2:

2x ELAC Debut 2.0 B6.2 Bookshelf Speakers @ $300 (comes in a pair)

1x Bic Acoustech PL-200 II Subwoofer @ $300

1x Denon AVR-X3500H 7.2-Ch x 105 Watts A/V Receiver from Accessories4Less @ $500

Total: $1100

About the same as option 1, and would come down to preference to RSL vs Elac (if you can demo Elac at a store, please do, RSL is internet direct only but does have in home trail). Similarly easy upgrade path, you'd just fill it out with the rest of the Elac Debut 2.0 B6.2 lineup (ie center, they even have some on walls for surrounds).

Option 3:

2x RSL CG23 @ $200 = $400

1x RSL Speedwoofer 10s (sold out until Oct) @ $400

1x Denon AVR-X3500H 7.2-Ch x 105 Watts A/V Receiver from Accessories4Less @ $500

Total: $1300

This requires a budget stretch, but gets you great stereo performance with a clear upgrade path. For speaker upgrade, you add the 3rd RSL CG23 for your center (these can be used horizontally or vertically FYI), and then whatever you want for surrounds (either the RSL CG3 or an on wall, ect)

Based on these numbers you can see you have about $300 for the speakers, so any speakers you can get for $150 each would work here. Other options are Fluance Signature Series HiFi ($200 for pair), Jamo S 803 ($160 for pair), or Q Acoustics 3020i Bookshelf ($300 for pair). I haven't heard any of these, but they get good reviews (particularly the Q Acoustics).

You could always go less on the receiver, but then you might have to buy a new one later. Would be nearly impossible to go lower on the subwoofer, the BIC and the RSL Speedwoofer are about as good as it gets for that price.

Finally, since you are primarily music focused, you could always axe the subwoofer altogether (add it later) and spend ~$600 on 2 kickass (maybe tower) speakers as music doesn't need as much super low bass as movies do. Let me know if you want to see what that looks like.

u/JasonTheHuman · 3 pointsr/audiophile

I'm not sure about best buy maybe check out their subs, you could crosscheck prices on subs/amps on amazon to best buy's prices. I recently upgraded from an LP60 to a LP1240 (secondhand) and I've been seriously underwhelmed and am having problems.

The LP60 sounded crisper with cleaner sound which shouldn't be the case for a much more expensive table with a cartridge costing more than the previous table all together.

The 1240 wasn't nearly loud enough so I had to add a preamp, I know there is a built in one but after trying every possible Line/phono config it still was't giving me the volume the LP60 had.

Also I am getting a loud hum which I can't seam to figure out. I attracted a ground wire from the turntable to the preamp which reduced hum but is still prevalent. I'm almost positive this hum is stemming from the turntable itself as when I used the LP60 with the amp there was no hum whatsoever and the hum is still there when the preamp isn't connected.

I had this problem so many times. I hated taking 8 AM classes and I had to do it several times over the years and it sucked every time. But I did learn of a few tricks that may help...

First, I'm assuming you have either an iPhone or Android phone, there are several apps that work really well for people like us. I personally have an Android phone so some of the apps I may have used, may not be available if you have an iPhone but I'll post links for both. Check out these links and try these apps. If one doesn't help, move on and try another.

Like others said I'd go with a sub. If you've got a tight budget look into the Dynamo 300.

I also have the Fluance SX6s paired with the Dynamo 300 and I've been really impressed. Although you'll want something bigger if it's a pretty big/open space you're working with, my setup is in my room (like 12x12ft).

u/shakewell · 3 pointsr/Zeos

Considering upgrading from 2.0 to 2.1 for a desktop setup, how do you do this with this? looks like the sub doesn't have Hi-level Out connectors? Would a receiver be required in this case?

u/BTsBaboonFarm · 3 pointsr/vinyl

At $700 for a budget, here is what I suggest you do...

  1. Remove the built in phono preamp from the LP120

  2. Go with one of these phono preamps:

  1. Pick up the Audioengine A5+ powered speakers.

  2. Use whatever remaining budget you have to either buy some cheap speaker stands (it is not advisable to put them on the same surface as the TT unless you have some isolation pads), and potentially upgrade the cartridge on the LP120
u/happybarfday · 3 pointsr/editors

I personally use the Sony MDR7506 as they're pretty much a standard for basic monitoring. Crisp, detailed high end, tight punchy base. Comfortable for hours on end and if you take decent care of them they should last years with the only wear and tear being the earcup material flaking off a bit. They're definitely made for desk-use as they have a very long coiled non-detachable cable.:

http://www.amazon.com/Sony-MDR7506-Professional-Diaphragm-Headphone/dp/B000AJIF4E

There's also the Sony MDRV6, which are very similar, but apparently have a little more low-end.

http://www.amazon.com/Sony-MDRV6-Studio-Monitor-Headphones/dp/B00001WRSJ
__

As far as speakers go, I've been using the Audioengine A5+ for a few years now and have been very satisfied. Great sound and more power than I'll ever be able to use in my small apartment. They look nice too (I got a good deal on the white ones). They are powered speakers (opposed to the A5) and thus don't require a separate amp. They also come with a small remote for volume/mute:

http://www.amazon.com/Audioengine-Active-2-Way-Speakers-Black/dp/B005OA3BSY

For a DAC I use the Audioengine D1 plugged in through USB, which gives me higher quality audio and a convenient headphone out and volume knob:

http://www.amazon.com/Audioengine-D1-24-bit-Digital-to-Analog-Converter/dp/B006IPH5H2/

u/mrstinton · 3 pointsr/ultrawidemasterrace

So since I did a lot of searching prior to purchase but couldn't find anything - to anyone else considering using the Ikea Fredde desk and the X34 together, the the monitor stand just barely doesn't fit on the raised shelf and so I had to screw a small metal plate to the back to accommodate the rear foot of the stand. It's a fine solution and I can't see the plate during regular use so it's seamless.

I'm super happy with the monitor besides some minor bleed in the corners but UNF I just can't get over that colour accuracy and encompassing view! With this addition to my setup I feel like I'm at max level, i.e. can't "level up" (at least not very far), with regards to my audio/video setup.

Anyone with a nice ultrawide monitor shouldn't skimp out on audio too! I see a lot of ascension posts featuring $100 Logitech speakers, which are fine but you can improve on audio as much as video! To anyone looking for an excellent performance to value ratio mid-fi 2.1 audio solution to complement their ultrawide I can't recommend this combo highly enough: Audioengine A5+ bookshelf speakers + S8 subwoofer.

EDIT: Forgot about headphones! My point still stands, don't be afraid to spend more for a better experience! I love my Philips Fidelio X2 for both gaming and movies. If you're in the market for some cans head on over to /r/headphones and ask for purchasing advice in the sticky.

If your budget is really $1500 then by the time you buy the TV, furniture, cables, etc. you'll only have around $500 left for audio. At that price range a proper 5.1 setup is definitely out. Here is what I would consider:

  • Entry-level refurbished Denon receiver for $180 and some decent bookshelf speakers like the $300 KEF Q100 for a decent 2.0 setup. You could add a subwoofer later for more bass and/or buy a center & surrounds to get 5.1.
  • Forget the receiver entirely and get a pair of good powered speakers like the $400 Audioengine A5+. These speakers have their own built-in amplifier so you don't need any more equipment (can just plug them into the TV) but the downside is there isn't really any way to expand the setup if you decide you want something better in a year or two, you have to start over.
  • You could also look into a sound bar, they are not at all liked on this sub but they honestly are not that bad. The advantage of a soundbar is you get a proper center channel so for TV and movies the dialog might be a little better, and some of them have decent "virtual" surround sound. E.g. something like this $420 Vizio which actually includes wireless rear speakers. Soundbars have the same problem as a powered 2.0 setup in that they are not expandable.
u/AJRiddle · 3 pointsr/battlestations

Whats your budget and what do you want out of them.

A few months ago my budget was $100-$250 for desktop speakers...and after researching more and more I bought $400 speakers.

(Un)fortunately there are actual scientific measures for speakers and there is a significantly large jump from $200 to $400 generally

I bought Audioengine A5+ after deciding it wasn't worth it to pay $250 on speakers and know that for $400 I could hit that next plateau. Size is also a huge factor, it turns out it's pretty much impossible to get very high quality sound reproduction on smaller speakers. They can take the same speakers and shrink them perfectly and it will have a measurably lower sound reproduction quality.

u/daddylongstroke17 · 3 pointsr/vinyl

First of all, before I give suggestions, let me just say it's definitely possible to find something better than what I'm recommending for less money if you go vintage or scour craigslist. However I don't have the knowledge to really help you with vintage gear. I know it takes time, patience, possibly repairs & finding parts, etc. Plus you need to know what you're looking for. And if you don't live in a huge city with tons of quality vintage hi-fi stuff on craigslist or floating around in goodwill stores, it could be a while. So if you want to go that route, maybe somebody around here could take a look at your local craiglist or something and help you out.

So with that being said, if you want to go new/newish, this is the exact lineup I bought for my first setup recently. It's all going to fall into the category of entry level/minimum for "audiophile" so it won't absolutely blow your mind, then again looking at your current situation maybe it will lol:

Project Debut Carbon DC (usually a $400 table, available for $300) here

You will see a lot of people recommend Project, Rega and U-Turn as the best entry level "audiophile" style tables. I am not a man of means so it worked for me. The DC is the upgraded version of the Debut Carbon with a better, quieter power source. Comes with an adjustable counterweight and anti-skate, which your LP60 does not have and the absence of which can cause damage to your records. Furthermore you can upgrade the stylus, the platter, I think the tonearm (?) down the road if you wish, when more money becomes available. It comes with an Ortofon 2M Red which is a solid budget cartridge.

Audioengine A5+ - lightly used $319

Very good powered speakers for the money, so you wouldn't have to spend money on a receiver/amp at this time. I've been thoroughly impressed with them.

Project Phono Box S lightly used - $161.50

Phono stage. Could maybe find one for cheaper that would be just as good, I don't know a ton about phono stages. Remember to set the gain to match your TT when you get it.

Total: $780

I know you said your budget maxed at $600, maybe wait another paycheck or 2 or find a different cheaper phono stage and/or downgrade the A5+ speakers to A2's which are bookshelf speakers if you're ok with that.

There are a lot of options out there, this is just what I ended up going with recently and I'm very satisfied. I've already upgraded the platter on the TT to an acrylic one, and will prob upgrade the cartridge next christmas as a gift to myself, thinking maybe the 2M Bronze. But this will absolutely serve and give you a huge increase in performance from day 1.

u/mukelarvin · 3 pointsr/BudgetAudiophile

I know over-budget suggestions aren't the most helpful, but the Klipsch r-15pm's look nice. I've never heard them though. And I don't know about auto-standby. Okay, so definitely not a helpful suggestion.

https://www.amazon.ca/Klipsch-R-15PM-Powered-Speakers-Bluetooth/dp/B01A7J534G

u/blueshiftlabs · 3 pointsr/Chromecast

Yes, you'll need an external amplifier. A receiver will have an amplifier built in, but if you're not fussy about the audio quality, a little class-D amplifier like this works well for cheap.

u/theSalmon9 · 3 pointsr/audio

I don't actually have one of these subs, but I'm 99% sure you will not be able to use the sub to power the speaker outputs. The speaker level inputs/outputs are used to get a signal to the sub after it has already gone through an amplifier, and the sub's built-in amplifier is only used to power itself. You can definitely still use the sub by getting an adapter cable to run from the TVs 3.5mm output to the subs RCA Line In, but you will need to get some sort of amp/receiver for the bookshelf speakers. It doesn't have to be fancy, I've used small cheap amplifiers to power speakers and while it wasn't audiophile quality, it was definitely better than the TV speakers.

3.5mm to RCA cable

Small Amplifier I've used before

u/bleacheda · 3 pointsr/BudgetAudiophile

That is pretty general and not very helpful.

Anyway, after further searching the web it looks like these type of speakers where used in a Sony CMT-GP5 system.

Specs here: [https://imgur.com/a/EN3W5wZ]

So I guess an amp with less than 30W per channel should be fine (or even more if you're careful to not turn it up all the way I assume)

Something like this maybe: [https://www.amazon.com/Lepai-LP-2020TI-Instruments-TPA3118-Amplifier/dp/B071FJF4FF/ref=sr_1_4?keywords=Lepai+LP-2020A%2B&qid=1571864431&sr=8-4]

If you get the money (like $70) in the future and want to go even further. Separate your sound source outside of your computer case with something like this.

I've been using the FX Audio DAC X6 + Beyerdynamic DT770 (cuz office environment) at work for years, my brother uses one as his main setup. Its seriously fantastic for a crazy cheap price and honestly its helped cut out a lot of issues I've had with motherboard-attached sound.

At home I've got a Schiit Mjolnir and Gungnir and I've got the whole setup hooked up via balanced XLR cables (gets rid of grounding loop noise) and I've got a 4 pin balanced cabling for all my headphones. Even thousands of dollars in, I really enjoy my current setup at home, but honestly its been severely diminishing returns since my 598s + FX DAC X6.

u/luiscomputech · 3 pointsr/headphones

Personally I wouldn't waste money on them with the 4xx . I have a SMSL 793ii and it barely powers the 400i's or the Sundaras . To get good results get something with a watt or higher . I use a FX Audio DAC-X6 with the jumper mod . For 65 bucks , it's the cheapest unit I could recommend . Especially if you have optical or coax outputs on your computer . If not , the DAC-X6 has a usb input also . https://www.amazon.com/FX-Audio-Optical-Coaxial-Amplifier/dp/B072JJT7SF

u/Walnut_Uprising · 3 pointsr/audioengineering

For reference, if you're looking for a "cheap" solution for a way to get sound out of the computer, and all you're doing is mixing, look into a DAC/Headphone Amp combo. I have interfaces with inputs in my practice space for tracking, but I just have one of these guys on my desk at home that connects to a USB port. If you end up getting nicer headphones down the road, it'll still work as well.

u/Tater_Tot_Casanova · 3 pointsr/xboxone

Agree with the above comments re: good pair of headphones vs gaming headset. You’ll get better sound game / mic going this route. My current set up is as follows and it’s the best sound experience I’ve ever had ( if you don’t mind a few cords): Audio Technica AD 700x $100 + ModMic 4 $55 + Y split cable $15 to plug into the 3.5 mm port on your controller. The above is all I really needed to play but last week I also grabbed this Dac Amp. $65 and the whole set up sounds even better and doesn’t drain my controller’s battery life.

u/QuipA · 3 pointsr/headphones

The XB950 is only good for one thing: bass

A DAC/amp wouldn't change the fact that this headphone sounds like ass.

The HD598 has been discontinued and is not easily available anymore, the newer version HD599 is still pretty expensive.

If you want a great sounding headphone and a DAC/Amp to use at home only.

  • AKG K612
  • FX Audio DAC X6

will cost you roughly the same as the new HD599, but you will get a lot more bang for your buck
u/AMLRoss · 3 pointsr/HeadphoneAdvice

If you like Sennheiser then the 660S are pretty good. Only 150ohms so they are much easier to drive. (compared to other 600 series that are 250ohm)
660S

I would still recommend getting a dac/amp because that will usually make a difference over a direct plug to the motherboard. Something cheap like the FX Audio Dac X6 would be a good starting point.

The Beyerdynamic DT1990 get very good reviews for open sound stage:

I'm also relatively new to all this -- I used to just have my Sony MDR-7506s plugged into my computer and for the most part that's 90% of the way there for me. However, the headphone out jack on my motherboard recently started having intolerable noise, so I had to do something to deal with it.

I started with the Fiio E10K (https://smile.amazon.com/FiiO-Portable-Headphone-ICP-AT1000-Headphones/dp/B076DVBNRP/) which I got primarily to avoid the line noise, and it powers the HD 6xx just fine (I got that pair of headphones around when I got the Fiio). I brought the Fiio to work and replaced it at home with the more powerful Massdrop O2 + SDAC (https://drop.com/buy/massdrop-o2-sdac-dac-amp/) which is ~2x the cost of the Fiio. I honestly don't know that I can tell the difference between the two setups, or say that one is qualitatively better to my ears than the other for either the MDR-7506 or the HD 6xx. In retrospect I probably would have been about as happy just getting a second Fiio.

In your case, as Roppmaster said, I'd just go ahead and test your new headphones with your motherboard. If they get loud enough, don't have any noise, and sound good to your ears, then you're all set for now. If any of those things aren't true, then you can probably start with either the Fiio or the one xehpar recommends since that's also pretty affordable (https://smile.amazon.com/FX-Audio-Optical-Coaxial-Amplifier/dp/B072JJT7SF) and either of them will get the job done for you. I got the Fiio because I have their Bluetooth adapter and it's worked quite well for me so I feel comfortable with their products, and it's well-reviewed; I didn't come across the other one but on paper it has better specs than the Fiio. (The Fiio is smaller, uses micro-USB and draws its power from that without needing a separate power brick, so it's better for e.g. a laptop. It also has 3.5mm line out and headphones as opposed to the ports on the FX Audio, so depending on your equipment one or the other may be more convenient.)

u/raknikmik · 2 pointsr/PS4

The PS4 is iffy with audio addons.

Some USB soundcards do work I can try one later today when I get off work, but what I usually used instead was a DAC/AMP combo that connects to either your TV optical or PS4 optical port.

I can link the one that I use. Link

u/Kerry56 · 2 pointsr/headphones

Cheapest is probably the FX Audio X6 DAC/amp.

If looking for an amp alone, the Schiit Magni 3 is hard to beat in the sub $100 range.

Benefits of an external DAC are a little hard to predict. If you have issues now, like hiss or humming or static in your computer audio, an external DAC will solve this. But an inexpensive DAC may not be a huge improvement over computer audio if you have no obvious problems now.

u/FatS4cks · 2 pointsr/headphones

You can always try to look into what kind of chips manufacturers put in their audio interfaces and compare them to the internals of straight up dacs. I haven't done so myself, but I expect they mostly use realtek components, the same stuff that ends up on computer motherboards anyway, meanwhile dedicated audio gear typically uses in-house components, or chips designed by other audio companies. Again I'm basically guessing when it comes to what kind of components are found in mixers since I'm no expert in that field.

I'd say most modern middle ground motherboards are good enough for 75% of all headphones, but if you're looking into getting something like Beyerdynamics in the 250ohm flavor or
the Sennheiser HD600, which are generally hard to drive, I recommend Fiio E10k or the Dac-X6. Both are decently cheap and will drive 90% of all headphones. Someone mentioned the o2 sdac and that one is basically the sweet spot before the law of diminishing returns begins and it will drive 99% of everything out there.

tldr; get your headphones first before looking into external audio since it's likely your pc will run them just fine.

Frys often has good sales on Jamo speakers, but I'm not sure what's available in Europe. I've seen the S809 HCS 5 speaker set go as low as $399, so maybe you could get a good black Friday deal. The 803 set with bookshelf speakers is $269 right now, might be a decent option.

The Pioneer AJ set got some good initial reviews as a solid budget set, but I have seen some people complaining about it online after getting the set. The center channel in particular seems to be pretty lackluster based on user feedback.

The Sony Core series speakers get good reviews as a budget option. I've seen the bookshelf SSCS5 speakers go as low as $73 a pair and with black Friday coming up there might be some good deals on them.

For a decent sub you'll probably need to up your budget a little bit or wait until you can save a little more. The Bic PL200ii is a good sub for the price and often goes on sale for $250.

With black Friday deals maybe you could get the Jamo 803 set with a PL200ii sub within your budget or 4 Sony core bookshelf speakers and the matching SSCS8 center channel instead of the Jamos.

Fluance Signature Series

If you don't have an amp, the SMSL Q5 Pro powers them nicely, but puts you just slightly over budget.

u/hack_tc · 2 pointsr/BudgetAudiophile

So many points to hit on, I'll try and help with that I can. I'm in the US so I'm not really sure what the pricing and availability is in your area, so my help will be somewhat limited haha.

If you are wanting to do a 2.0 system with the option to upgrade to 5.1 in the future, much of your budget will be going towards a 5.1 receiver. The suggestions mentioned in question 1 are good suggestions, but you also need to take a look at your TV and see what audio out connections are available. Some TV's, like mine for instance, only offer an optical out for audio. If this is the case for you, then the SMSL SA-60 will not work without a DAC in between. Something like the Fiio D3 would suffice. Also, chances are if you go this route, you will lose the ability to control the volume with the TV remote. Getting something like the SMSL Q5 Pro instead might be a better option. It can accept multiple audio inputs (digital and
analog, so no need for a DAC), and also has a cheap remote for controlling volume and other stuff. You can also use the Q Acoustic Speakers with these amps as well. However, either of these amps would have to be replaced in the future if you decide to upgrade to 5.1. But they would be great for a 2.1 setup.

In the US, with that budget (300 euro = $335) and a future 5.1 in mind; I would get a Pioneer VSX-530 Receiver ($200), and the Micca MB42X Speakers ($90). Then I would start saving for a subwoofer like the Bic F12 or ML Dynamo 300 (depending on the size of the room). Once I had a sub, I would then save up for better bookshelfs (3 of them...something like empteks or elacs or who knows what), and relocate the Micca MB42X's to the rear. This would be a a respectable 5.1 setup that will blow away pretty much any home theater in a box.

Anyways, hope I was of at least some help. Best of luck with your setup!

u/tonyviv · 2 pointsr/BudgetAudiophile

Why active? The JBL's are nice but any active setup offers no future upgrade path. I'd look at one of the SMSL DAC/Amp combos like the Q5 Pro https://www.amazon.com/dp/B017W12UCU/ or AD18 https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01N8Q57FS/ with the KEF Q100s or Q300s https://www.kefdirect.com/specials/specials/q100-bookshelf-loudspeaker-pair.html https://www.kefdirect.com/specials/specials/q300-bookshelf-loudspeaker-pair.html

u/grendelone · 2 pointsr/hometheater

A number of possible solutions. Your TV has optical sound out. So you will need something to convert the optical digital sound signal to an analog signal (DAC). Then you will need something to amplify the analog signal to drive a speaker (amp). Then of course the speaker itself.

Here are some possible solutions:

u/fpsfreak · 2 pointsr/hometheater

SMSL Q5 Pro Digital Amplifier 2

Check this little guy out. Ticks all the boxes (other than video input), and leaves you with a decent bit of cash to buy a nice used set of speakers.

u/FULL_METAL_HOODIE · 2 pointsr/hometheater

Not sure exactly what Pioneer speakers you're talking about, but if they are the BS22's, then they are a great budget option.

I would look into a receiver from Denon or Yamaha instead of the Pioneer. These can be purchased refurbished with warranties from Accessories4Less if you want to save some money. If you don't have plans to upgrade to 4k anytime soon, either the Yamaha RX-V377 or the Denon AVR-S500BT will do everything you need, but considering the newer models are only ~$20 more, I'd probably go ahead and get one just to be safe.

If you don't want a big receiver in the bedroom, there are other options as well. You could use the SMSL Q5 Pro and a bluetooth receiver to get a cleaner setup.

u/davidddavidson · 2 pointsr/audiophile

You need an amplifier with a built in DAC (or separate DAC unit to connect to the amplifier). Optical audio is a digital signal but the speakers need analog.

SMSL Q5 Pro should be able to do what you want.

I think this is Rule 1 territory though.

Without a lot of info, but assuming you want to keep it all pretty basic, this is my best shot. Before taxes you're at $687, but you could downgrade the sub to the Sub-1000, or skip the rear channels altogether for now. You'll need some speaker stands for the front, mounts for the rear, speaker wire, etc. So, not a perfect list, but here we go:

u/chilighost · 2 pointsr/vinyl

I'm wondering if I can get some help/advise in regards to speakers for my Fluance RT81 that is currently on order. I have narrowed it down to these two sets: Fluance Signature Series Bookshelf Speakers: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01A5UB4JU/ref=twister_B01BKWQW3A?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1

Klipsch R-15M Bookshelf Speakers: https://www.amazon.com/Klipsch-R-15M-Bookshelf-Speaker-Pair/dp/B00LMF41IY/

Both seem to be passive speakers so I would need an amp as well apparently. I don't plan to connect them to a AV receiver - just the turntable and speakers. Can anyone recommend a good amp for this setup? I found this one on Amazon (https://www.amazon.com/ART-DJPREII-Audio-Turntable-Preamplifier/dp/B000AJR482/) which seems to get decent reviews.

I am new to vinyl but I want speakers that have some good bass to them (without a sub) since I won't be connecting to a receiver. Which of these speakers will provide the best highs and enough bass?

Any recommendations would be helpful - thank you!

u/Frede154 · 2 pointsr/hometheater

If you're ready for a receiver upgrade, there's nothing better at $150 than an avr-x1400h. If you're not ready he can pick up a Denon s540bt for $150 or a Denon s730h for $220. I'd pick the 540 for an under $1,000 setup.

Bic America F12 Subwoofer (if wife allows)

Now you have quite a few choices for LCR. I'd start with Elac Debut 2 B6.2 and Matching Center. For ~$570.

Leave the rest for cables and upgrading surrounds for later. I'm currently pretty happy with my Polk owm3 for $100 but I have rear space restrictions.

You can also go the Fluance Route Fluance L& R, Matching center, and Bipole Surrounds for ~$500

I like tube stuff - I would get something like this: https://www.amazon.com/Stereo-Hybrid-Tube-Amplifier-Integrated/dp/B078J8KJD9/

It uses a tube preamp section, with solid state output. You would run your computer to it via either USB or BT. Your record player would go to the RCA inputs on the back. You would need to get a record player that has "line level" RCA outputs. Those are common these days.

Re: speakers, I have two sets of Klipsch speakers that I like. I would maybe suggest these: https://www.amazon.com/gp/offer-listing/B00LMF41IY/

I would use the Best Buy gift cards to get RCA cables and speaker wire, maybe speaker stands. Or, some IEM's (earphones).

Been reading for the past few hours and decided on this as a basic setup:

Speakers

Receiver
Is this a good choice instead of using a preamp + amp? As for future growth, can it handle more powerful speakers + subwoofer?

Turntable

Basically, is there anything else I need to set this up (aside from records)? Also, will it be a setup that can grow reasonably if this is something I choose to upgrade components of?

I wouldn't pick up one of those amps. One of the features for one of them is that they don't spark when plugging power in.

For an amp, try this Micca Origain.

If you have the room, a receiver might be better for you. This Yamaha R-S202 would work well, but only works with 8 ohm speakers.

For speakers, you have a few options.

So, just for fun I tried to price out a decent setup for ~$1k. Basically, you'd have to buy used/refurb to get a good value at that price point, at least right now. If you can wait, check out slickdeals and local retailers regularly to try to get blowout prices--it does happen with regularity.

Here's my pass at a starter 5.1 setup:

  • Remove the cubbies and globe
  • Place the right speaker where the globe is with the left to match
  • To make use of the space behind the left speaker, I might consider placing the receiver/media stuff there, and either put the center on a stand or possibly wall mount it
  • I might consider getting an articulating TV mount to more easily position your TV relative to your speakers

It's absurd, all the good suggestions and buying guides are apparently for the US market. At the moment I have only found Dayton speakers

u/Robsteady · 2 pointsr/minimalism

Depending on what kind of quality you're looking for you could go with a Lepai amp and some smaller bookshelf speakers like the Dayton B652 Airs. It's not the best sound in the world but for the price and size it would be hard to beat. I'm running my Audio Technica turntable off of this system and I plan to buy a small bluetooth receiver to hook up to the amp's aux input so I can play stuff from my computer or phone over the stereo from wherever I am. You can get an idea of the size of the amp and speakers here.

This may be the easiest way for you to get to where you want to go for under $500. Don't forget that you'll need the right piece of furniture (craigslist) and/or speaker stands plus speaker wire. I don't know anything about remotes.

Refurbished AV receiver with 5.1, HDMI, 4K.

Dayton Audio speakers:

Subwoofer.

Mains.

Rear.

Center.

Most AV receivers have a calibration mode and come with an external mic.

Alright, for your $300 I have:
Mount - $45

Receiver - Denon 530T from Accessories4Less - $130

Speakers - Pair of Daytons from the buying guide - $55

Stands - Set that has decent reviews and should be sturdy enough - $40

That leaves you a $30 buffer for sales tax and to buy speaker wire. Continue to save up until you can buy a subwoofer.

Fluance is also a Canadian company and many of their prices are different on their website (which frustratingly hasn't loaded for me for two days). I'm not sure what their shipping is but I am definitely eyeing the SX6's as he mentioned.

I definitely feel your pain though, prices in Canada are insane! I was lucky to nab a setup on black friday at ~50% off, and it was still more expensive than the pieces would have been full price in the states. Its crazy!

$170+ refurbished receivers with Chromecast built in + either MB42X ($80) and MB42X-C ($70) or Sony SSCS5 ($150) or Micca RB42 ($130) or Elac Debut 2.0 B6.2 or Polk S20 or Q Acoustic 3020 or more but those are just a few stand outs at their price point. Then you'll need speaker cable and assuming your not adventurous enough to strip wire and put banana plugs on yourself you can buy them pre made for pretty reasonable price. And yes this doesn't have Android TV but do you really want to replace your whole sound bar when Google kills Android TV for Google TV in a few years? (Because Google loves killing products people love)

u/grizzlybee · 2 pointsr/BudgetAudiophile

I personally think so. My mom just got a $150 vizio soundbar for Christmas and I didn't think it sounded very good compared to my Pioneer -SP-BS22 which I got for $50 off craigslist. Infact those are on a pretty good sale right now anyways $89. Add in the center channel for $70 and find a cheap receiver on CL and you're good to go

u/x152 · 2 pointsr/audiophile

They are just ok but adequate for most people...

You'll find that buying what i have listed below would sound much better but obviously wouldn't have the same form factor...

Total around $600. If you wanted, you could invest a bit more into the front L/R channel speakers (or the subwoofer)

If you are looking for minimal trouble and just want a home theatre as easy as possible, you obviously would be giving up sound quality for something easier to work with. so the bose would work. Just go off your instinct :D Like the other mentions if you are happy with how the bose system sounds, then it would be a great deal.

u/m1kepro · 2 pointsr/hometheater

I ended up tightening my budget quite a bit on this new home theater, so some of my choices aren't as nice as what I had before, but I'm very happy with what I got in the end. I want to thank everyone who gave me advice in my last post here. It was all very helpful!

I went with a 65" Samsung 120Hz smart TV. I decided against getting the 240Hz because I couldn't see a difference between the two when looking at it, and the 3D makes my wife sick in any case. That saved me almost $500.

For the receiver, I took everyone's advice and opted away from the all-in-one set I'd been looking at. Instead, I got a great price on a Pioneer VSX-824 that I've been very happy with.

I know the Denon reciever is what everyone recommended, and it's what I bought at first, but strangely enough my PS3 didn't work with it. It worked just fine connected to the TV directly, and other devices worked with that HDMI cable and port, but the PS3 just told me to go fuck myself. A quick google search told me that it's a flaw in the way the HDMI handshake works with Denon receivers, so back it went.

I went with Pioneer speakers as well, hooking up a
pair of tower speakers for front left and right, a pair of matching bookshelf speakers for the rear, and the matching center speaker.

The subwoofer will have to wait, for now, but the plan is to purchase the matching subwoofer when we're ready.

Instead of the Harmony Ultimate, which didn't seem to get any good remarks, I opted for the much cheaper Harmony 650, which has made my wife very happy. No more frayed tempers about what button does what on which remote. I'm even buying my parents one for Christmas.

I'm hugely pleased with the upgrade over my previous setup, even if it's not everything it could have been. What do you all think?

u/1369ic · 2 pointsr/audiophile

Not sure why you would want the l/r and the center, other than it's a good deal. Are you hoping to fill it out to 5.1 eventually?

I've never heard Fluance, but the go-to recommendations around here are one of these two Pioneer speakers, or the Miccas. Search this sub to look for reviews (and double check the model numbers if you're interested. I'm doing this from memory). If you get the Pioneers you should be able to afford the subwoofer that goes with it. Also, you can usually find a Polk sub like this one on sale.

There are better options, I'm sure, but these get a lot of recommendations for budget systems. I have a brother in law with the Pioneers and no sub and he's pretty happy.

As for hooking it up, you just need a 3.5mm to RCA jack cable like this one. Also, if your receiver has an s/pdif input you could go from the sound card to the receiver that way. If you use the first cable, the sound card will be decoding the digital into analog. If you use the s/pdif cable, your receiver will do the decoding. Depending on the DACs in the card and receiver, one might be better than the other.

u/thecw · 2 pointsr/sonos

Most subwoofers take a single RCA from subwoofer out on the playback device to the L input on the sub. The R is not necessary.

For budget subs (< $500) you have a quite a few popular choices:

  • $348 Klipsch
  • $199 Polk
  • $157 Pioneer

I'd highly recommend upgrading a better sub in the $500 .. $800 range:

  • EMP Tek
  • HSU
  • Rythmik Audio
  • SVS (Box)
  • SVS (Cylinder) -- if space or WAF (Wife Approval Factor) is important

I've googled all over and can't find an answer to this!

I have the following equipment:

u/cubiey · 2 pointsr/BudgetAudiophile

Basically it’s input (phone/computer) -> amp/receiver -> speakers -> ears. Amp/receiver basically just make the signal from whatever powerful enough to drive the speakers. General rule of thumb is to spend the most on speakers (some use the 2/3rds rule, which is good enough for most set ups especially cheap ones) then amp then accessories.

Following this logic, you’d want to spend ~$120-200 on speakers with your budget, good rule of thumb which could net you some killer equipment (see sidebar). As for an amp, old stuff isn’t bad and see below, but if you really want new stuff the R-S201 from https://www.accessories4less.com is a good one if you want to spend $100+200 for your basic set up+change for speaker wire and input cables. Otherwise, if you just need a low-volume set up, probably get something like https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00A2QLGEQ/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_m6scAbN06JA08 for an amp and spend the rest on speakers. The Affordable Accuracy’s, Elac B5s and the rare ~$250 deal on KEF Q100s are all stand outs at the top of your budget, and with Black Friday coming up we might see really good deals on all the equipment you’re looking for.

But if you’re in a big college town, def recommend checking out the local craigslist and shops in town. I went to a big college and the local shops had quite a lot of equipment at great deals, probably from a few too many kids away from parents with credit cards they couldn’t pay off looking to unload their stuff to pay it off. I still check that areas craigslist for good stuff, cause my area is a bit dry for that sort of stuff (or at least isn’t full of people who don’t know what they have or are desperate to get rid of it).

Pioneer BS-22-LR, $116

Polk TSi100, $150

u/fritobugger · 2 pointsr/BudgetAudiophile

What is your budget? There are plenty of small class D amps out there that would do a fine job of driving these speakers.

This SMSL SA-50 for $65 is a good choice

It would be very easy to set them up and they would sound pretty good. You would need an amp. You wouldn't need a DAC, the aux out on your PC would work.

This amp is what I use on my PC:

https://smile.amazon.com/SMSL-TDA7492-Amplifier-Adapter-Silver/dp/B00A2QLGEQ/

If you think you would like to add a subwoofer or a second audio source down the line, the SMSL Q5 is a step up, although it's more than 2x the price. Edit: the Q5 is also a DAC, if you want to try a different one from the motherboard audio.

u/GrandMasterJR · 2 pointsr/hometheater

BIC America FH-65B for $95 !!

BIC America F12 for $190

They're large though, 9.1 x 13.5 x 8.3 in.

u/usul1628 · 2 pointsr/BudgetAudiophile

Well, nice is a relative term when spending $300 on speakers and a subwoofer. Its alot to ask for on that budget IMO, but it can certainly be done if it just plugs into a computer. /r/zeos has lots of good info, using his guide, I'd pick the Polk On-Walls for $100, Martin Logan 8" Subwoofer for $130 and an SMSL SA50 for an amp. You'll need banana connectors, speaker wire and a 3.5mm to stereo RCA for connectivity. That should be a good balance of sound. Don't get this setup without the subwoofer though, those speakers are designed presuming you have a sub, and will fit nicely on your desk, and the sub is small enough to fit comfortably underneath.

u/cranktheguy · 2 pointsr/interestingasfuck

You can buy a small bluetooth adapter that plugs into the back of his existing stereo. There are some amps that offer it built in as well... including some that are ridiculously small. Something like this may be ideal.

u/flyboy12321 · 2 pointsr/howto

Yeah this looks like a good all-in-one solution OP. Otherwise looks like these two items, the amazon basics Bluetooth receiver and a lepai 2020A amp would be another, slightly cheaper, option, but then needs two power cords.

u/Thatuserguy · 2 pointsr/amazonecho

Tl;dr at the bottom because wow I wrote a lot here.

I don't know if there's a way to specify on an app by app basis, but you could potentially get around that by essentially telling Alexa to switch a Music Mode on or off. As a note, I personally have NOT tested this to see if it works, but I see no reason it wouldn't.

First of all, you're gonna want to buy a Harmony Hub (Or at least something like it). It's basically a big IR blaster that shoots out signals to your devices to turn them on or off, change their inputs, and other such stuff. You can create "activities" where it will turn on or off the devices you specify and change them to their correct inputs all at once. It also has direct Alexa integration so you can say something like "Alexa, turn on my TV," which could prompt Alexa to tell your Harmony Hub to run your "turn on TV" activity to turn on your TV and AV receiver, and set them to the right inputs.

This next step depends on whether or not your AV reciever has bluetooth. If it does, cool, you're already done. You just have to make sure that you make an activity in the Harmony Hub that will turn on the necessary stuff for listening to music, and make sure that when it turns on your AV reciever, it also turns on its bluetooth. Then just make sure it's paired with Alexa. This way, whenever your reciever's bluetooth is turned on, even if you have speakers plugged into the AUX port on the Dot, Alexa will still automatically connect to it and play through it instead. When it's off, Alexa's audio will play through her internal speaker or whatever speaker that's plugged into her AUX port.

If you don't have bluetooth built into your AV receiever, it gets a little more complicated. First off, you're gonna want to get this. That is a bluetooth receiver that requires power to function. Plug it's audio output into your AV receiver, and BAM, now your AV receiver has bluetooth. You're also going to want to get a smart plug to plug its power cable into. Because this bluetooth receiver needs power to function, this will allow you to turn the bluetooth on and off whenever you want from a distance, simply by powering the smart plug on or off. Pair that, and Alexa should automatically connect to it when you turn it on with the smart plug, and use her internal speakers or AUX connected speakers when it's off.

The main downside to the above is that you're still going to have to power the bluetooth on separately from you powering on your music mode with the Harmony Hub. From my understanding, you can fix this, but it requires getting a Smart Things Hub and a Smart Things Plug it will connect to. You can apparently integrate Smart Things into your Harmony Hub activities, meaning that you can power the Smart Things plug on at the same time that you activate your music mode on your Harmony Hub, or power it off when you turn that mode off. Frankly, this is a decently expensive solution to a minor annoyance of a problem, so I'll leave that up to you to decide if you want to go this extra mile.

As a note, the Smart Things integration with Harmony Hub is the thing that I'm most unsure about how it works. I believe I've seen it mentioned that it worked that way, but I cannot confirm, and honestly haven't researched into that as much as I'd like to have. If you go this route, I'd definitely recommend looking into it more for yourself. Also of note is that this was a setup I was planning for my particular situation. It may be that there's much cheaper options and alternatives to this whole mess that I don't know about or just simply overlooked because it didn't work for me. I encourage you to do more research into this on your own if you really want the best results.

And finally, if ALL of this is way too much over your head, you could just do what I decided to do that was ultimately so much cheaper and easier: Just buy a Roku Streaming Stick/Amazon Fire TV Stick and use that as your dedicated music streaming device to your AV receiver. Then just use your Dot for everything else.

Tl;dr: Buy a Logitech Harmony Hub. Have bluetooth on your AV receiver? Pair it with Alexa, and then just add turning on its bluetooth to your Harmony Hub's turn on music activity. You're done.

Don't have bluetooth on your AV receiver? Buy this and a smart plug compatible with Alexa to plug it into. Pair the bluetooth receiver with Alexa. Turn the plug and the receiver on when you want to listen to music through it. Turn them off when you don't.

Want to be able to turn that smart plug on at the same time as your music mode? Make sure you buy a Smart Things smart plug and a Smart Things hub, then integrate turning your plug on into your Harmony Hub's music mode.

Or just buy a Roku Streaming Stick/Amazon Fire TV Stick for music instead if you're a cheapass

I use a wifi outlet switch and a bluetooth receiver that automatically connects to a device when powered up. I have a routine where if I turn on my home theater system to the Music setting then the bluetooth receiver is turned on and when not on the Music setting the bluetooth receiver is turned off. I use a Harmony hub and SmartThings for the routine but could probably use IFTTT or Stringify.

Link to AmazonBasics Bluetooth Receiver

I don't recommend this type of receiver if you don't have a way of automatically switching it on and off because it connects to the Echo immediately after you disconnect from it which is why I came up with this solution.

u/JohnBooty · 2 pointsr/BudgetAudiophile

Bluetooth speakers have their own amps, so no.

But, I think what you're really asking is if you could use Bluetooth with these amps. That answer is "yes." There are lots of inexpensive Bluetooth dongles like this one that you can plug into one of these SA-36/50 amps.

https://www.amazon.com/AmazonBasics-Bluetooth-4-0-Audio-Receiver/dp/B00I59VBH4/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1494172408&sr=8-2&keywords=bluetooth+adapter+rca

Note that with Apple products, sound quality will not be great unless you get one with AAC support since iPhones and Macbooks don't support Apt-X. (Macbooks can work with Apt-X with a little tweaking) I've used this one and it works great for iPhones. But ones with AAC support cost like $20-$40 more because everything sucks.

The device /u/pqu4d linked to has RCA connectors on the back, and comes with an adaptor cable that has a 3.5mm plug on the other end. Your speakers have a 3.5mm plug. You can't plug a plug into a plug, not with out a female/female adapter to go between.

This device is closer to what I think you're looking for. The silver part in the picture unplugs (it is a male/male adaptor) and the male 3.5mm plug from your speakers would plug into it. It has an internal battery and a micro USB jack for recharging it. It's also quite small.

If you did buy the device /u/pqu4d linked to, you would also need to purchase an adaptor like this.

This Amazon Basics Bluetooth Receiver is the same style as the one /u/pqu4d linked to, but it already has the correct style of 3.5mm jack (female) on the back and you could plug your 3.5mm plug directly into it. Both this unit and the one /u/pqu4d linked to use a DC power supply that plugs into the wall.

Not a bad system. If you don't listen to CDs or Tapes, you could get rid of the CD player and tape deck. The speakers could be pretty good, Advent made some decent speakers.

The quickest and cheapest way to get bluetooth functionality would be to buy something like this . That's the first one that popped up on Amazon, I can't comment on how well it works compared to others.

u/Setitimer · 2 pointsr/SoundSystem

That's actually a pretty big pavilion. I'd go rent some PA speakers and a real amp. Five little wifi speakers aren't going to work for a pavilion like that with more than a dozen people in it.

As far as connecting an iPod to the amplifier, I'd go with a dock that has an unamplified stereo output (something like this). If you want to go wireless, use a bluetooth receiver instead. Either option will work with any standard amplifier that you can rent.

FWIW I used to DJ in clubs and did a couple of weddings as well. It's easy to underestimate how loud those events get and how much power you actually need for a sound system. Better to have too much than not enough.

The Sony's are an amazing price right now. These two would only cost you $100 and will blow you away. I used to use this combination until I upgraded to a Yamaha AV receiver to replace the Lepai amp and added a center channel as well. It sounded amazing. There might be a better option for a $75 receiver to meet your $150 budget that might provide bluetooth but I'm not as familiar with anything else

I'm about to put together a surround sound setup for my room for about $850. I know it's well over $500 but for $500 you won't get much. Although I would recommend looking into the Sony SS CS5 Bookshelf Speakers they are outstanding for their price and you can get a quality AV Receiver for around $250 from Denon and Yamaha.

Also, the matching center for the Sony's performs really well. They're great speakers for the money. Of course you can always spend a couple hundred more and get something better, but the Sony speakers, price to performance is insane. I'd put them pretty close, sound quality wise, to the ELAC B5's. They don't have as much oomph as the ELAC does, but add a sub and you're golden ponyboy.

I have not heard or used the matching sub but I would assume it doesn't go low very well.

u/DavidAg02 · 2 pointsr/BudgetAudiophile

You've got tons of options...

These 3 way Sony bookshelf speakers are a great option that fits your budget. You could do 4 of those and the matching center: https://www.amazon.ca/Sony-SSCS5-3-Driver-Bookshelf-Speaker/dp/B00O8YLMVA

Beyond that... Fluance, Jamo, Micca, Elac and Klipsch all offer good speakers that fall in your budget.

The receiver is going to be a little more difficult, but still doable in your budget. Look at 5.2 options from Onkyo, Yamaha and Denon. You'll be able to save some money without sacrificing too much if you go for "last years model."

Something like this Denon: https://www.amazon.ca/DENON-AVR-S650H-Receiver-Streaming-Bluetooth/dp/B07QRC9NP5

Last little bit of advice... don't overspend on cables. For speaker wire, the bare bones Amazon basics is perfectly fine. Same thing for HDMI and anything else you need. Basically... don't get your cables from Best Buy and you'll be OK.

u/BitchesGetStitches · 2 pointsr/vinyl

I use a Technics built in the 80s, which I love. It's 100 watts per channel with 2 channels and sounds spectacular. Admittedly, it's better with digital input than audio, and I'm looking to upgrade to a tube amp this year. It is, however, more than sufficient for a full, beautiful sound.

This one is okay, but doesn't have a phono input so you'd have to use a pre-amp for one of the inputs. This would reduce your sound quality noticeably. It is, however, inexpensive.

In further research, I found this one, which seems very decent. It's in your price range and has 4 channels at 100 watts each. There is a phono input with a built-in pre-amp, which is nice. I'd do some more research first, but on first glance, this one looks promising:

I'd be happy to help!

So these floorstanding speakers take speaker wire to carry sound and power to them. This can be done two ways:

  1. Use a receiver. A receiver would be used to run your separate sources into, (for example running an Xbox One in through HDMI, or a phone through an RCA>3.5mm cable), and then using speaker wire to run to the speakers. Audio can be transferred to the receiver in many different ways: RCA, HDMI, Optical, Coax, just let me know where you want to get your sound from. Simple as that. Different receivers are more or less reliable than others, and some will provide cleaner/stronger power to your speakers, but I'd suggest sticking to some bigger brands when choosing a stereo receiver such as Yamaha, Denon, Sony, Pioneer, Marantz, etc.

    .

Now, if you only need one place to get sound from one source (for example you ONLY want to run your TV to the speakers), look into a simple 2 channel amplifier. This will take an audio signal, and send it straight to the speakers, even simpler than using a receiver. Let me know if you have any questions.

u/300watts · 2 pointsr/audio

Wireless speakers are not going to be cost effective and you'd still need a power source. Below is a setup for around $200 that would sound great. All you'd need to add is some speaker wire and either some wall mounts or shelves. (You might be able to find better deals with some shopping around.) Good Luck.

I've seen these as low as $49 a pair.

u/sanitysshadow · 2 pointsr/hometheater

As noted the first one is a 2 wire stranded copper speaker wire. 1 End will attach to the + and - on the back of the speaker. The other end needs to tie into the back of a amp or receiver. Something like this:

https://www.amazon.com/Sony-STRDH130-Channel-Stereo-Receiver/dp/B006U1VH2S/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1498849794&sr=8-3&keywords=2+channel+stereo+receiver

Each speaker would tie into a black (-) and red (+) set of terminals on the back of the receiver. You can then plug an audio source into the receiver and play sound over the speakers.

If you wanted to use these speakers with a tv/home theater set up you would want to look at an AVR. Something like this:

https://www.amazon.com/Denon-AVR-S510BT-Channel-Receiver-Bluetooth/dp/B00YAO43YG/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1498849947&sr=8-1&keywords=avr

Your wires would then hook into the Front L/R +/- terminals. You could then hook your tv/audio equipment the avr and use your speakers for sound.

The second picture is hard to tell what the wire was used for. Some type of 4 wire electrical device, impossible for us to say what it was hooked up to.

Audioengine A2

Audioengine A5+

Polk Subwoofer

FiiP Digital-analog-converter

These are just a few of the entry level options. Don't take my word for it. I don't own any of these items. I just see them pop up from time to time as good entry-level options. Both pairs of speakers I posted are powered, meaning they have amplification built in. They wont require an external amplifier. Another option is to buy a pair of passive speakers, like these, and buy a basic receiver, like this, to power them.

Again, these are just some EXAMPLES. I am not recommending any of these items specifically, as I have not heard them. I am suggesting that you do some research and figure out what works best for your needs and budget.

You'll notice I also posted a subwoofer and DAC (digital-analog-converter). The subwoofer is going to allow you to hear the lower frequencies that those small speakers wont reach, which you might find necessary if you like drums. The external DAC will allow you to bypass the shitty DAC in your current source (a laptop, I'm assuming?). You'll be able to send a digital signal out of your source (provided it has a digital output) to the DAC where it will be converted to the analog signal that will go to the amplifier. It isn't necessary, but it will improve sound quality since the shitty DAC in your laptop or computer will be bypassed.

u/tangclown · 2 pointsr/hometheater

You made a colossal mistake buying a lepai t amp. There are reasons that most receivers/amps are more than $20.
If you want to buy something and expect it to work well then get a 2 channel unit such as this.

First of all.... Your a saint!! I never expected someone to actually go on craigslist for me!!! Just one question though. The reason I spent so long on craigslist before was that I kept finding deals i thought were good, but finding the same product cheaper online. For example I found the wharfedale for 125$
https://www.ebay.com/p/Wharfedale-Sapphire-Sp-87-Floor-Standing-Speakers/1576240027

kEF for 111$
https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/KEF-Q35-FLOOR-STANDING-SPEAKERS-MAHOGANY-FINISH-VERY-GOOD-ORDER-/273044768350

Is ebay still generally cheaper than craigslist? Or is there a reason I should use craigslist instead of ebay. BTW I think the klipsch look like best bang for buck I think....

Edit:
Also I have narrowed it down to between the Sony and Yamaha receiver. Both have used options for 78$ for sony
https://www.amazon.com/gp/offer-listing/B006U1VH2S/ref=dp_olp_all_mbc?ie=UTF8&condition=all

and also 125$ for yamaha.
https://www.amazon.com/gp/offer-listing/B01EMQI2CU/ref=dp_olp_all_mbc?ie=UTF8&condition=all

In your infinite wisdom is yamaha worth the extra 45$? Once again thanks for your first response.

Been looking into a comparison between the Klipsch R-15PM and the Edifier R1700BT.

Would be using them to listen to music with bluetooth and also would connect them to a TV. Wondering if listening via bluetooth negates any better sound quality from the more expensive set. Also, just generally if the Klipsch speakers are worth the extra $200. I listen to a lot of taper recordings from live concerts, so music is definitely the priority.

u/D1rty87 · 2 pointsr/buildapc

More on speakers, these are really good but won't touch headphones in the same price range. So only go for it if you're mainly use speakers.

These are if you can't afford R-15PM.

But like I said, don't expect anything crazy from speakers unless you're willing to shell out a grand or more.

u/kodack10 · 2 pointsr/audiophile

Yes you could do that. The yamaha has the digital inputs you'd need and the phono.

The other receiver many people look at for this kind of thing is the Pioneer Elite A20 It's $100 cheaper but doesn't have digital ins.

Yamaha also makes that same receiver in higher power versions like the 501 if you so desire.

It's a shame about the phono input because the Denon Heos Amps are discontinued and going for $350 on Amazon and would replace your need for Chromecast or your Xbox because it allows bluetooth, USB, or wifi streaming including direct access to Tidal and Spotify.

Not to further add to the pool, but Klipsch makes a set of self amplified speakers for turntable lovers with a built in phono and digital inputs, and the speakers have the amp built into them. r15pm

u/drtonmeister · 2 pointsr/electrical

I hate to be the debbie-downer, but a big part of the Bose sound is some very clever wizardry inside the box that no longer works --

They build their tiny speakers optimized for A) power handling, and B) minimal distortion, and usually end up with something that has quite odd frequency response.

Then they measure the transfer function of their little screech-box, and have their engineers build signal-processing to apply the inverse of the transfer function just before the amplifier stage in the central brain.

Along with some clever use of multiband compression using psychoacoustic tricks so that we hear impressive bass even though the actual electrical bass power to the speaker is limited, the end result is a speaker that measures and sounds like it has flat frequency response between say 50Hz and 18kHz, but only if the special brain is in the circuit in front of it.

r/audio has lots of people suggesting various low-cost "class-d" amplifiers, so if you want to try this anyway with something inexpensive you could get a bluetooth class-d or class-d amp with line-in and a cable to connect your phone to it -- just connect the stripped wires of the two leftish speakers to the "left" black and red "speaker" terminals and likewise with those on the right.

u/Aco2504 · 2 pointsr/BudgetAudiophile

It'll be a little messy, but technically yes. And you'll be giving up a physical knob to control volume and will only be able to use digital volume control on your computer.

There are very small, convenient miniature amplifiers you can use, if the issue is space.

Edit:

u/ScatmanJohnMcEnroe · 2 pointsr/vinyl

My friend has practically that exact setup and is very happy with it. If you just want a plug-and-play option, are putting this in a small room that won't make those little speakers sound tiny, and aren't the type to fall down rabbit holes, then you probably will be, too.

However, if you'd like more of an upgrade path, I'd recommend going with a cheap class d amp and the ever-popular Pioner BS22 speakers. A little bit more expensive than just the Edifiers, but in the same ballpark -- and gives you the option to improve any individual step of your chain down the road. Or you can go with a U-Turn Basic and use the money saved to buy something like an Onkyo TX-8220 which has a built-in phono preamp, tons of analog and digital input options for hooking up a TV, a connection for a subwoofer if you want the extra bass down the road, etc.

For speakers, going from lowest to highest price, I'd check out the Micca MB42x's, the Fluance SX6's, and the ELAC B5's.

The SMSL SA50 is a nice budget amp but (if you have the space for it) a used receiver is the best bang for your buck and will likely be more powerful.

I have the MB42x's. They're quite capable and will do just fine for me for some time. Just remember that there are so many options out there. Do your best to find the right setup for you.

Modify this alarm clock. The bed shaker is semi-violent. Wrap it around a headband and attach it to your head for maximum effect.

With tax and shipping though, that is a bit over your budget, should be around $350-400. It should sound really good, plus leave you the option to add a center channel and surround if he ever wants it.

If you want to cut the initial cost, you could forego the sub until a later date and it would still sound very good and that would get you back into budget. You could also forego the sub to purchase the more expensive receiver if that appeals to you. The nice thing about a receiver is it gives you lots of options for future upgrades.

I'm doing the exact same thing. This is my plan. (As a disclaimer, I am fairly new and a student of /r/Zeos.)

This Receiver

Front Speakers

Center Speaker

Subwoofer

If that sub is too large for the mobility you want, you could go with this, which is quite a bit smaller.

All that (with the F12) will be around $525.

If you're doing surround, which may limit mobility, I'd throw in a pair of these.

Don't forget some good quality speaker wire and banana plugs make life easier if you want to move it easily.

u/NorseSock · 2 pointsr/ZReviews

Since you mentioned that you're looking to upgrade to 5.1 at some point in the future, I'm assuming that you won't be using this setup for near-field listening and that this fits more into the music-centric, home theater category.

For the subwoofer, I would suggest going with the Martin Logan Dynamo 300 unless you have a large-ish room. It holds its own pretty well in regards to extension and clarity despite its small size and low output. You won't be rattling shit off the walls, but it will definitely improve the lacking mid/low-end of the MB42x speakers.

For the amp, I would suggest skipping the 2-channel upgrade and moving straight into a 5.1 channel receiver since you're planning on doing surround in the future. You'll end up saving some cash overall as well as gaining some additional features. Unfortunately, you'll be pretty close budget-wise. Going for a refurbished Denon AVR-S500BT will keep you a buck or two under. If going refurb is out for you, you might want to have a look at the SMSL Q5 Pro.

u/D_Livs · 2 pointsr/audiophile

Enjoy your keyboard and the miccas.

In 6 months or whenever you get upgradeitis, save up and spring for a nice sub like this: http://www.amazon.com/MartinLogan-Dynamo-300-Theater-Subwoofer/dp/B004LRPXAU

When shopping for budget subs, you can usually get slap, or musicality. Depends what you prefer.

u/Graceful_cumartist · 2 pointsr/vinyl

Well basically a set up is puzzle you can build up over time. Planar 2 is a solid table that you wouldn't need to upgrade for years, don't know if it comes with a cover though. It is a solid table built around delivering the best sound from the cartridge to the amp. Now one big part of how your records will sound is the cart, the one the planar 2 comes with is totally fine for start but you will want to upgrade it pretty soon. I would recommend you to take a look at this Pro-ject Debut Carbon Esprit. Mainly because it is more bang for the buck imo (electronic speed switch and speed control, carbon arm, acrylic platter and a way better cartridge), but that is totally an opinion.

Now for the rest of the set up I would suggest buying the preamp separate. For example this Cambridge phono preamp is a solid starting point. There are two reasons for this, you can easily switch it to a new one down the line and you can get some money back for it.

The second one is that you can start by getting powered speakers, for example these Audio engine A5+ and down the line upgrade to an amp and bookshelf speakers. Powered speakers are a totally valid option nowadays and these will give a detailed sound with the table. They are also way easier to get your cash back when moving forward.

What I linked up there is a pretty solid setup focusing in sound for a pretty rough 1000 when done trough amazon.

  1. These speakers

  2. I need some good speakers to hook up to my turntable and computer that aren't little crappy computers speakers. These have gotten spectacular reviews and are portable enough to move around easily.

  3. If I never got this item, I would be very sad since music is my passion, and I couldn't imagine a life without it. And as of now I only have little tinny speakers so I'm not enjoying it as much as I could.

Just to get going, you need powered speakers. Could be something cheap like this or something more high dollar like this.

After you've had it a while, there's plenty of upgrades and DIY improvements you can make, see this blog. But those aren't needed for starting. Enjoy!

Look into a DAC/AMP

I spent a little money, nothing bank breaking, to get good audio from my PC

I use the Topping VX1

It attaches to your PC by USB and/or line out (the green jack)

I use the line out from my PC to the AUX input on the back of the DAC

I run from the Topping VX1 to a 8" sub from Dayton-Audio and from the sub I go to 2 Dayton Audio B652 speakers.

The sound is really good. Much better than from crappy PC speakers. Also the Topping has a switching headphone jack so you can leave your headphones in at all times.

I am using the audio technica m50x headphones which are decent.

u/sweet_story_bro · 2 pointsr/buildapc

For some reason he has a good sound card but crappy speakers. That makes me think he likes music/sound? If so, maybe consider new speakers. I would recommend the Micca PB42x speakers with an aux cable, then either buy or make some stands. If he would like a subwoofer too the Dayton Sub-800 with an aux to rca cable can pack some good punch without pissing off the neighbors too much. This setup would be more than enough for the average gamer/music enthusiast. It will be worlds above what he has now. However, if he does any music recording/mixing, maybe head to /r/audiophile or /r/budgetaudiophile for more specific recommendations.

Quick note: surround sound usually doesn't make sense at a desk, but you can certainly add more speakers to what I have listed here if you'd like.

Edit: oh yeah, you'll also want a speaker cable or some speaker wire (if he has wire strippers) to connect the two speakers to eachother.

Get a vibrating alarm clock. They shake the bed like an actual earthquake and don't stop until you shut them off. It's not comfy. You cannot sleep through them. There is no "jingle jangle", it's an earthquake + a screaming BUH-BUNK BUH-BUNK BUH-BUNK (if you put the sound alarm on max volume).

I'm deaf at night because I take my implants out, so I use this alarm. I think the first time we tested it out, I actually fell out of bed in surprise. I use this one but there's dozens of options out there now.

You could also get "Clocky", the alarm clock that runs and hides, so you have to get out of bed and hunt it down to shut it off.

Get him one of these options, tell him to set it one time only, and test it on a day he doesn't have work. But honestly, if he refuses and/or just goes back to setting dozens of alarms over a three-hour timespan, tell him to sleep on the couch until he's willing to work with you to find an alternative that doesn't ruin your sleep.

Yes Virginia, there are alarm clocks made specifically for deaf people. I own this particular model and can verify that the bed shaker alone will wake you up, even with the sonic tone disabled. A bit of Google experimentation will doubtless uncover more. You could visit the company's website to see if they'll sell you the vibrator + cord, without the clock.

u/w3rk · 1 pointr/DIY

look at what deaf people use for alarm clocks, this one here would shake you right out of your bed

u/SOwED · 1 pointr/NoStupidQuestions

Here are my tips:

  • Use https://sleepyti.me/ to figure out when your alarms should start.

  • You said you have roommates, so try an alarm such as this one. It is capable of super loud sound which I don't use but also has a big vibrating disk you can put under your pillow or wherever is comfortable, and that shit would wake the dead, but isn't louder than a cell phone alarm

  • You said you use melatonin. Make sure your dose is right. Some pills are sold at 5 mg or even 10 mg in a single pill. You need like 1 mg maybe 2 mg. Try adding in some 5-htp as well, always helped the grogginess from melatonin for me.

  • If these things don't work, start to examine lifestyle. Caffeine, nicotine, alcohol affect sleep. Are you eating well? Are you in shape and getting exercise? Are you using your phone or computer or TV then going straight to bed or even in bed?

Beyond those, there are sleep disorders you can get checked out.
u/slickastro · 1 pointr/AskReddit

Sonic Boom Alarm Clock

I was constantly waking up late and was getting to the point where I was getting in trouble at work. My co-worker suggested this clock and it works GREAT. You can opt for a loud alarm with variable pitch from high to low, you set the pitch, or a giant vibrator you place under the mattress that turns your bed into a vibro-bed to wake you up, or a combination of both. Honestly I only use the vibro-bed mode now as it wakes me up reliably yet does not shock the rest of the family with the air raid siren.

I use ear plugs because I sleep during the day, and I get paranoid I won't wake up. I use the alarm clock I linked as a just in case. I never have to actually let it go off any more, but it makes me feel better to know it will if I should happen to sleep through all three of my phone alarms.

I've actually got the volume on mute on the alarm clock. I just use the vibration pad.

Hey yo, I've been doing my fair share of research these past couple of days and this sub as well as /r/Zeos have been a huge help. That budget can definitely get you started with something nice.

These suggestions are all from reading this sub, avsforums, amazon reviews, you name it.. I really have no on-hand experience as I'm saving up for a build myself. (Here is my post in case you're interested)

  • Pioneer SP-FS52 - These puppies seem to be a huge favorite everywhere. I did see someone post they were cheaper a couple of weeks back so it's up to you if you want to wait. They are also Pioneer as you mentioned you wanted to stick with that.

  • Denon S500 - This brand is very reputable here, as well as the site. Don't be discouraged by the "Refurbished". I'm planning on getting a receiver from this brand and site and jumping on maybe 1 or 2 years of Extended Warranty just for giggles. It has integrated bluetooth as you mentioned that was important. Like someone above mentioned, you can always go a different route and purchase a receiver without bluetooth technology and get a Google Chromecast (~$25-$30) or Bluetooth dongle. (Be aware you will loose quality when you go wireless)

  • As for a sub, someone needs to chime in, but these two are held in nice regard: Martin Logan Dynamo 300 and Dayton 1000

That should keep you around your budget and have some spare for cables and any other expenses that might come up along the way. Maybe some cable management or whatever.

    Good luck

Hello, I've purchased the Presonus Eris E4.5 for my computer speakers and wanted to add on a subwoofer for a 2.1 setup. I'm debating between the
-Dayton Audio SUB-1200 vs the
-Martin Logan Dynamo 300 and finally the
-Yamaha YST-SW012.

The primary usage is for music in a small room approximately 7'x14' (dorm). I plan to place the sub near my desk. Is there anything else that I need to know about how to hook up my speakers and a subwoofer to my computer? Are there any other suggestions? I'd like to keep the price under $150.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but would I have to connect a 3.5mm to RCA from the computer to the sub, then speaker wire to RCA from sub to active speaker, and then speaker wire from active speaker to passive speaker?

u/Deadleggg · 1 pointr/hometheater

Small apartment set ups are the last place you want to put a 12inch sub unless you want a mountain of noise complaints.
For a room that small something smaller that still clean would be this from Martin Logan while it isn't the most powerful thing in the world its cheap and won't anger the neighbors nearly as much as a 12" Dayton

u/riledredditer · 1 pointr/Zeos

I stretched my budget to the max but selected out these components. Anything you'd change?

MartinLogan Dynamo 300 - $150

ELAC B5 Debut Series 5.25" Bookshelf Speakers - $230

ELAC C5 Debut Series 5.25" Center Speaker - $180

I want to buy my first 2.1 home listening setup.

1. What is your budget?

Looking to spend $400 at max.

2. What are you looking for?

I am looking for a 2.1 setup. I was considering getting a pair of Polk bookshelf speakers. I have a friend who works for the Polk corporate office and can get me very good deals, right around cost. But I am totally willing to look at other options in my price range.

This is the sub I was thinking about getting, MartinLogan Dynamo 300 - LINK

This is the amp I was thinking of getting - SMSL SA-50 LINK

Or maybe this amp, AudioSource AMP-100 - LINK

Not sure which amp to get. I am just starting my journey into the world or quality home listening.

3. How will you typically be using the gear?

I will be using this for home listening. Playing almost all music from my computer. I already have an external soundcard and DAC.

4. What gear do you own?

I own an external soundcard and a DAC. Plus a pair of DT 770 headphones.

5. What do you intend on using for a source?

My computer > external soundcard > DAC

6. What material will you be using your gear for?

I will be using my gear to listen to music only. My taste is all over the board. I listen to every genre and do, at times, like a bit of a stronger low end. Other times I like a more neutral low end that doesn't cover anything.

7. Are you willing to buy used?

I am willing to but new but would prefer to buy new.

For affordable-yet-awesome with a small footprint I like the audioengine A5+ active speakers (=amplifer and speakers together). You could then add a schiit mani phono preamp and you're done. Or, if you want a stand alone amplifier and passive speakers, it's hard to go wrong with the very nice Emotiva TA-100; great sound, lots of connectivity with high quality phono preamp, at a reasonable price, and connect it to a pair of Elac Debut b6 speakers.

Just keep in mind that neither of those are going to give you lots a bass that you can really feel in your chest, it's just not possible with something that small

Need advice for a PC Setup
I’m a fan of great sounding music, but by no means would I consider myself an audiophile. I’m a bit out of the loop when it comes to making an informed decision about new gear to accompany a recent PC build I just put together. I have a budget of $500.00 but am willing to step that up to $1,000.00 if the improvement in sound quality is worth the extra money.

From what I’ve read, it looks like active monitors suit my needs best. I have found a set of KEF X300A for $550.00 which look pretty good to me and have been reviewed quite well; however it looks like I won’t be able to run a sub with them. I do listen to pretty bass heavy music but I live in a condo that requires I keep the thumping bass to a minimum. Do any of you have experience with the KEF X300A’s? Alternatives that look like they might also suit my needs are the Vanatoo T1’s and the Audioengine A5+ which both appear to be well reviewed and have outputs for a sub woofer.

Any help or product recommendations would be much appreciated.

My second question is in regards to speaker placement. I ‘m running a three monitor setup which makes speaker placement a bit awkward as two of the monitors are right in the ideal placement. Do any of you have experience with this issue? Again any recommendations would be appreciated.

AudioEngine have a GREAT reputation. These are the A5+. This is of course just a suggestion but I have a pair for my office and they're wonderful bookshelf speakers.

You should know, that's a pretty nice turntable, everyone's financial situation is a little different, but I wouldn't cut corners on the speakers.

u/Scottstimo · 1 pointr/battlestations

Snagged off Craigslist for $325 for the pair + $100 for the DAC. They're Audioengine A5+s.

u/outterspacetits · 1 pointr/battlestations

They're the A5. The A2 are only 60w.

Link to A5 for the curious

I can find only fragments of the other thread you're referring to, but the TS-to-RCA cable is legit. It's not an adapter or coupler or anything like that. It certainly won't be the best connection option, but again, it works (it wouldn't damage the audio interface or the speaker), and it would cost far less than a pair of new monitors.

I looked at those speakers you have (or had). They're these? Those are more like bookshelf speakers, not active studio monitors. And $400 for the pair? You can do better than that for less money.

The JBL 305P monitors are another popular choice. They cost $150 each, and taxes/shipping could push the cost of the pair past your $300 budget. But both the Presonus and JBL monitors are fine choices.

Edit: I'm not commenting on how well it'll work. I don't own a Chromecast. It just seems to work on paper for what you're asking.

Okay, curious about your tips! I'm quite the noob to these custom setups so I have no experience with either.

What's a better suggestion for going by my feet under a PC desk (very up close field)? I don't need thundering bass, just want to backup where the Micca's can't quite finish the job and make my sound whole!

EDIT: Man, this Dayton 8" looks great and has great reviews. The description mentions an amplifier, I assume this has an amp built in too? Do all "powered" subwoofers have an amp, hence the powered? Thus, I can just use RCA's from my left and right RCA output of my audio card to the RCA line in option on the sub and it would be fine and dandy, the sub's built-in amp still works fine and everything that way?

Sorry for the noob questions guys, haha.

If you can push the budget, I would highly recommend the SVS SB1000. Great range, really balanced, and has adjustments to blend into virtually any system seamlessly. I haven't tried any true budget subs, so I am of no use there. Considering others reviews, have you looked at the Dayton line of subs? They are very inexpensive and people seem to really enjoy them.

I'm having issues with my speakers/sub combo. I have the Presonus Eris 4.5 and recently bought Dayton Audio Sub 800. The sub is wired directly to my PC using an RCA cable and I bought Speaker Wire to RCA cables to connect the "High Level Output" from the sub to the speakers' "Input".

The wiring makes sense to me but I'm not getting any sound on my speakers. I'm getting sound on the sub though. Is my new sub messed up or is it something with the wiring? I have tried two different sets of speaker wire to RCA cables.

u/DoctorWorm_ · 1 pointr/battlestations

They're pretty cheap speakers. You don't have to be an audiophile to hear the difference between cheap computer speakers and proper home audio equipment.
Computer speakers may be all you can afford, as high quality speakers are usually over $100, but at the $200 price range, there are much better choices than computer brand speakers.

If you want simple plug-and-play speakers, these Audioengine A2s are pretty good.

If you want better sound at this price, you can go with a separate amp, speakers, and subwoofer. Dayton Audio is the most cost effective brand at this price point.
Speakers: Dayton Audio B652 ($51.99)
Subwoofer: Dayton Audio SUB-800 ($79.00)
Amplifier: Dayton Audio DTA-1 ($46.95)

This combo will blow away any multimedia speaker set, both in quality and simply how loud it can get. and at $177.94, it's $30 cheaper than the Corsair speakers.

If you're spending more than $100 on speakers, you'd be stupid to get computer/multimedia speakers.

u/kitnorrie · 1 pointr/BudgetAudiophile

Doesn't like you've gotten a lot of help so I'll toss a few suggests out there, although getting a decent Bluetooth 2.1 system under $200 is no easy task.

I'll start with the already suggested Klipsch ProMedia 2.1 Bluetooth. It's actually the one of these I've had the fortune of hearing personally. It's also the only that's a complete system in the box. It's not a bad system, but it does have a few drawbacks. First, the system is always in Bluetooth pairing mode. This has been a problem for people living in apartments who have pesky neighbors who connect to them and start playing music. Second, they do sound a little different than the original Klipsch ProMedia 2.1. I wouldn't say they are worse, but they don't have quite the charm in their sound signature that made the ProMedia so popular. Overall I would still the ProMedia 2.1 is a good system in box. But it really can't compete with a proper 2.1 system. By the way, Best Buy has run them on sale a few times now for $99.

On that note, I'll start trying to piece together a few more systems with separate speakers and subs. I'll start with suggesting the now discontinued PreSonus Ceres 3.5BT. They're pretty much the cheapest Bluetooth speakers I can find with a sub-out. They are running about $120 on Amazon right now. That leaves just enough to get this Monoprice sub. You'll also need a cable like this to connect the sub to the speakers. It's not a perfect system, but it's about the best I could piece together and keep it close to $200. I wish you could still get the larger Ceres 4.5BT for $120 but it appears to be sold out most places now. If you could jump up to either the this Monoprice sub or this Dayton one it would probably be worthwhile. You might also find open box stuff cheaper if you shop around.

Would be to get speakers without bluetooth or a subwoofer out like the Swan D1010 or Edifier R1280t. You could them get a sub like the Monoprice 9723 and a bluetooth adapter. You have to connect the bluetooth adapter to the sub and them feed the speakers from the sub. But the time you buy the speakers, sub, bluetooth adapters and cables you're going to be pushing the price into the range of better simpler systems.

There also a few 2.1 systems like the Edifier S350 that are little over budget but might be worth it. Unfortunately reviews on systems like these tend to be scarce.

Thanks! If you don't mind, I do have a clarifying question:

Given how close I'll be sitting to the speakers, would the 8" 80 watt model of that subwoofer still be a decent option? https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0063NU30K/ref=psdc_172568_t2_B0063NU3AA If/when we move, we're going to keep our shared space--my gaming space with his gaming/crafting/lounging space, so I'm not going to need something that can adapt to a larger area in the future.

It looks like the Mackie monitors already have mini to RCA cables in the box. My soundcard has a dedicated center/sub mini out, so I should be fine just getting an additional mini to RCA for the sub, shouldn't I?

And as an aside, for when I do multiplayer, my soundcard allows me to use the front jack on my computer as a separate audio output--I've just tested that out with some spare headphones and looks like I won't have to give up that split. Right now I run audio to the TV via HDMI and have my headset in one of the mini jacks in back.

So I'm upgrading from my ghetto budget audiophile build, Dayton B-somethings and Behringer U-Control Uca202 as my dac. Amp is something I got in a bundle from parts express with the speakers. Basically the build I learned from /u/zeospantera a few years ago.

My budget is $300.

My use case is only as desktop speakers for my gaming PC. Since I will have them less than 3 feet away, loudness is not a requirement for me.

I need a clear distinct soundstage where I can tell instruments apart.

I'll use them for listening to classical/orchestra, synthwave/retrowave and rock/metal.

Clear, reference highs are more important to me than brightness or thicc bass.

So this is my planned build.

This will be my source and amp, an SMSL Q5 pro.

It will power these passive bookshelf speakers, the Sony SSCS5 3-Ways.

These go to 3(ways).

As always anyone is feel free to tell me why my choice is obviously wrong.

And I hope /u/zeospantera can enlighten me to the true Patrician Choice.

I currently own an Audio-Technica AT-LP120USBHC, and I'm looking for an amplifier and two passive speakers to pair it with.

I've gotten a lot of help from the user sharkamino, and I've narrowed it down to a few choices, but I'd like to hear about which of these should I go for and why:

2.PIONEER - Stereo Amplifier - A-10-K - 188,99€ or $211

3.CAMBRIDGE AUDIO TOPAZ AM5 - 195€ or $218

4.SONY STR-DH190 - 199,99€ or $222 or

5.YAMAHA Stereo Amplifier R-S202D - 206€ or $230

6.DENON Amplifier PMA-520AE - 208€ or $232

7.PIONEER-A-10AE-S/B Integrated Amplifier - 211€ or $236

8.ONKYO Amplifier A-9010 Black/Silver - 217,99€ or $243

9.PIONEER SX-10AE-B Stereo Receiver 100W/BT - 218€ or $243

Even though the links above are from Amazon US and UK, the prices are from a local store in Portugal, where I intend on buying the setup.

Thanks in advance guys,

Have a good weekend!

If you want really, really affordable, the Parts Express Lepy 2020TI + Dayton B652 bundle for $50 gets you good sound for stupid cheap. Or you can get that Lepy amp standalone, as it's a solid budget unit, and pair it with something like the Pioneer SP-BS22-LR speakers, which are a great pair of bookshelf speakers for $100. The Klipsch R-15M are a great pair for a little over $150.

Also:

Sony SCSS5 - https://www.amazon.com/Sony-SSCS5-3-Driver-Bookshelf-Speaker/dp/B00O8YLMVA $138

BIC Venturi DV62si - https://www.amazon.com/BIC-America-DV62si-Bookshelf-Speakers/dp/B00006JPDI $117

Polk S15, refurbished - https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07TJ4D2LZ/ref=dp_cr_wdg_tit_rfb $166

Yamaha NS-6490 - https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00018Q4GA $130

Fluance SX6W - https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00067OS0A $130

M-Audio AV42 - https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00X741TB0 $150

Or you could look for vintage, but bookshelf speakers tended to either be gigantic and heavy (like my Bozak B-201 or B-402, which are bookshelf speakers in name only) or sound weak.

Is this for hometheater use or more for music? If you want hometheater I would look at getting a Denon like this

https://www.amazon.com/Denon-AVRS530BT-Channel-Ultra-Receiver/dp/B06XYD1RZ3/ref=sr_1_5?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1505740468&sr=1-5&keywords=denon+receiver

and you should really look into getting a sub for hometheater, your speakers will sound much better if they don't need to produce bass.

https://www.amazon.com/Dayton-Audio-SUB-1000-10-Inch-Subwoofer/dp/B0063NU3AA/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1505740753&sr=8-1&keywords=dayton+subwoofer

Sorry for the delay.. I forgot to reply.

I'm sure you already got the adapter and cable. The adapter is perfect and the cable might be OK. This one would be good - https://www.amazon.com/Choseal-3-5mm-Audio-Adapter-Cable/dp/B00A7J1ANA/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&qid=1483627337&sr=8-4&keywords=rca+audio+to+3.5mm

With your budget in mind I highly recommend the $180 U-Turn Orbit Basic turntable. I have one that I got with an upgraded cartridge (Grado Black) and it is a superb table. https://uturnaudio.com/collections/all

A few things I'm wondering:

Isn't the monitor underwhelming for a 1080 Ti?

You want a bequiet case and a Snow Silent PSU, which means you value quiet. Then why are you getting several noisy HDDs? Shouldn't you minimize their number? Wouldn't 2x8TB be fine?

Thanks for sharing your thoughts! I think forgoing the rear speakers would probably be a good move here -- it just seems like it's not worth it for the price. Do receivers exist without all the bells and whistles, or even a bluray player? I just really need something that will drive the speakers and I can piper audio to from the TV.

u/rar3nativ · 1 pointr/BudgetAudiophile

At the bare minimum include the following things if you want help and/or advice choosing or setting up amplifiers, speakers, DACS, etc

  • Budget: a little more or less than 100 u$s? I'm not sure
  • Country: Argentina. If the product cost more than 50$, I have to pay 50% of the excedent as taxes
  • I can buy from: Any amazon, b&h, I think almost everywhere
  • Use: Audioslave, RHCP, Rock in general, series,
  • Where: A desk in a Room
  • Space: 3.67m x 3.88m, NOT really loud, I will be most of the time 1.5m away from the speakers and occasionally on my bed, or taking a bath or cooking in the next room.

    Optional but also helpful

  • Powered, passive, or no preference: no preference, I've heard you can get a better quality with the same budget with passive speakers.
  • Any size limitations for either speaker or amp: no
  • To upgrade later?: not really
  • Pref certain way of sounding (Bright/forward, smooth/laid back, neutral, etc): that immersive experience (everyone here would call it the commercial one?) but I'm not sure, I don't have any speaker to listen and compare.., I only have a HyperX Cloud 1 headsets and I won't be downloading FLAC at least for the moment, I only listen from Spotify (music) or Bluray (series and movies) most part of the time

I've made my search but I have no idea about this so... I need speakers for the pc on the desk in my room. Mostly for series, music, games. I will not update the system soon after this purchase and I don't have anything right now besides my current headphones.

I'm from Argentina so I have 2 disadvantages: I have absolutely no idea what I'm buying because there are no places near me to try any of these speakers. For every purchase, if I spend more than 50$ I will have to pay 50% of the excedent. That means, I can buy an amp of 30$ without paying taxes or if it exists the possibility to buy a pair of headphones by separate (1 and 1 making a pair) I will probably not pay taxes... Are there places willing to do that?

    This is my room: https://imgur.com/a6UVKYU

    Questions:

    - What would you recommend and why?

    - My motherboard doesn't have bluetooth. I want to connect my pc the 99% of the time and maybe my phone 4-5mts away. What is my best option?

    - I think I can buy from any amazon. I've found better prices for some of the products there. Editing..

Hi there, I'm looking to upgrade my setup piece by piece and am not sure where the current weakest link is. This setup is used both with a desktop as well as part of a mini listening room set up (speakers are ~7 feet apart, with dual monitor set up in the middle, and I have a chair ~12 feet away that I listen to them in as well). I have ~$300 to spend, which I can do across whichever item(s) you recommend swapping out:

  • Record Player: Rega Planar 1 with stock cartridge (Rega Carbon)

  • Preamp: Schiit Mani

  • Amplifier: Pyle PDA6BU (currently takes in Rega/Schiit, laptop audio via AUX to RCA, and bluetooth audio)

  • Speakers: Dayton B652 Airs (with AMT tweeter)

I feel like the amp/receiver and speakers are the things that need to be switched, but which should go first, given my budget? I will have room for another similar budget upgrade in 6-8 months.

A quick example of the kind of setup I'd recommend.

Micca OriGain Compact Stereo Integrated Amplifier and DAC, 50W x 2, 96kHz/24-Bit, USB and Optical S/PDIF (Black) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01LXV4O6B/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_NmDYCbDXQCQW5

This is a solid 2.0 setup. Hooks up to the tv with an optical cable, has good bass with the 6" woofers on the bookshelf speakers, and if you want to upgrade later on, the amp should last you a while.

I've just been browsing amazon and found a pretty good setup for my budget.

Receiver

Left and right speakers

Center speaker

Rear speakers

Almost 600$ for the entire setup. I was also interested in the Dali Zensor 1 speakers that was recommended to me earlier, but they made the total price go up to almost 900$ I'm still curious if I should go with the Micca MB42X shelf speakers over the Dayton though.

Good point , thanks mate - exactly what I needed.

I can't get the Miccas, no. Dayton are available yeah - These are the suckers I'm wanting, right? Or would you recommend something else? Is there a !thanks type system on this sub?

u/Jeff9Man · 1 pointr/audiophile

Just a set of B452-AIR each for the kitchen, 2 bedrooms, office, and maybe an additional subwoofer for the deck. I may not be getting these exact speakers but they're a good example. These additional speakers will happen over time once I have my quality system set up in the living room.
I'd just like to have all my music in one spot while also being able to play it anywhere in the house without dealing with a bunch of speakers that require batteries. Running wires won't be an issue.

Does this seem like a good deal for 60$? Especially since I don't want to fork out too much money to decide if I want to get into this hobby or not. Also, I can't seem to find if it comes with a pre-amp built in, or if I need to purchase on separately? He's sent me video and confirmed it works.

u/Vergil229 · 1 pointr/buildapcforme

Alright I had a build all ready for you but decided I want to discuss some things out further

Is response time the most important thing to you about monitors? Because if you relax your limit to say 4/5 ms you can get an IPS panel which will give you much nicer colors and generally look better.

Do you want the monitors to match or do you care if they are different? Is there a size you want?

As for speakers, you can buy the standard computer speakers and they will emit sound, but as you will be using this for movies as well I recommend you go the amp/bookshelf route.

I'd get This Amp and These Speakers

Now you either can do sound over HDMI to the monitors, and then a simple Head-Phone to RCA and this would work for both the Xbox and the computer OR you pick up Optical to analog converter and then just run them straight into the amp. You'd have to get a splitter as it only has 1 input

I know this is more complicated and you're probably thinking (Fuck this I should just get all in one speakers) But I promise this will sound A LOT better

As for the build its going to look something like this

u/K1ngFiasco · 1 pointr/hometheater

You don't need big speakers. A lot like to show off big floorstanding speakers that are honestly overkill for the majority of folks. Look at some bookshelf speakers and a center channel.

If you have room for a soundbar in front of your TV, you have room for 2 bookshelf speakers or 2 bookshelves and a center.

Seriously, these are $50 ($60 with shipping but that can depend on your location) and will sound WAY better than any medium or high end sound bar when paired with a decent sub. For $200 total, the price of a "competent" (used loosely) soundbar, you can get much better sound quality while taking up barely more space.

u/CardboardHeatshield · 1 pointr/vinyl

If you want something you can add to later, honestly, Id go with something that needs a receiver. Ive herad really good things about these https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00NOA58RS/ref=ox_sc_sfl_title_4?ie=UTF8&psc=1&smid=A385A0XNQBW8HY

Youll have to drop about a hundred dollars on a receiver but honestly, thats not much mroe in total than the edifiers. And, when you want to open up that bass, youll be able to add a sub. I cant personally speak to those speakers, but they look solid, and a 6.5" driver is fucking monster in a pair of bookshelves. That said, I wouldnt be surprised if the mids were muddy in those. The ribbon tweeter combined with such a large driver, I would think the bass and the highs would be super clean but the mids might be lacking. I think theres a 4.5" version of that same speaker. If you intend to buy a sub in the future, taht might be your goldilocks version.

All the best, though. Good luck.

If I wanted a larger speaker (like this https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07147TBD5/ref=sspa_dk_detail_4?psc=1) how would I know if its compatible with the receiver? Polk S15s are not studio monitors and are passive. OP listed them with the SMSL amp to power them. The S15s are regularly recommended on here and are excellent. They're even listed in the sidebar recommendations put together by AudioPhileJoe or whoever he is. In his review he likes them better than the ELAC B5 and Klipsch.

So, OP. For 160/pair they're great. But you can also grab the Sony's for 73USD right now https://www.amazon.com/Sony-SSCS5-3-Driver-Bookshelf-Speaker/dp/B00O8YLMVA/ref=sr_1_6?keywords=Sony+bookshelf&qid=1563975540&s=gateway&sr=8-6

But I'd go with the S15s if you don't have or plan on getting a subwoofer. The Sony's won't have the low end like the S15

S15s + used receiver/amp is a great combo.

u/DarthPantera · 1 pointr/BudgetAudiophile

You didn't mention a budget so I'd recommend the following kit:

Speakers: Micca MB42x for 90$

DAC: FX-Audio DAC X6 for 65$ - bonus: you're also getting a decent headphone amp

Stereo amp: SMSL SA-50 for 65$

Total is about double what the Bose kit goes for but it should sound significantly better, is more future-proof (you can replace individual components if you want to upgrade) and it gives you an actual headphone amp. It also offloads sound processing from your motherboard to the DAC, which can result in better sound quality (depending on your motherboard). The DAC X6 and SMSL SA-50 are the same size and stack very nicely so it doesn't take anywhere as much space on your desk as a receiver.

u/omegaorgun · 1 pointr/AVexchange

Can't go wrong and upgrade opamp to something like LME48960 and put it in high gain mode. OP275, OPA2604, LM4562 are also nice opamps. Much more versatile and cheaper than the schiit.

u/AJCxZ0 · 1 pointr/headphones

I presume you're referring to the SMSL M6, since the FX Audio DAC-X6 is easily bought for $64.99 on Amazon. Another great powerful budget option is the Micca OriGen G2, though it can be hard to find. I found mine on r/AVexchange. You don't need to spend over $100 on a DAC/amp to drive your HD 58X Jubilee.

Take a look at the Z Reviews, but beware the crazy man with the camera on his head or you'll wake up destitute on a pile of pads and cables.

u/iakuai · 1 pointr/PS4

the fx-audio dac x6, could be a handy add on to what you already have.. around 60$, is an external dac and headphone amp. it has rca outputs you could put into your sa-50.. It also has optical and coax input as well as the usb with a handy switch on the front, add it to your existing stack, us the usb port for your pc, optical/coax for other devices, does your tv have optical output?

https://www.amazon.com/FX-Audio-Optical-Coaxial-Amplifier/dp/B072JJT7SF

edit, I'm kind of on the flip side of you, I Have the headphone setup but soon want to add speakers, to do that I am most likely going to buy the sa-50. I am using the fx-audio dac x6 now and liking it.

I've been using this DAC, FX Audio DAC-X6 24BIT/192 Optical/Coaxial/USB Digital Audio Amplifier DAC Decoder Black https://www.amazon.com/dp/B072JJT7SF , for several months now and it's pretty good. Have it paired with the Sennheiser HD 598 headphones. Great sound.

I'm not one that can hear the difference between $100 and $500 headphones, too much metal in the early 90's, but it sounds quality to me.

u/Jayzilla13 · 1 pointr/buildapcsales

I thought the same thing. This is the review that helped me to make my final choice. That guy is very, very active in the headphone/audiophile community.

I used just the SHP9500 by themselves for months then grabbed the FX Audio DAC-X6 the Philips alone are very, very good. Adding the DAC/Amp combo aided them but is in no way necessary.

As someone who was prepared to drop up to $200 on a new pair, I figured fuck it if nothing else I'm only out $50. I personally recommend these to anyone looking to get into the headphone world and not dump $200 right off the bat.

Honestly I wouldn't even bother with onboard sound. Get something like this https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B072JJT7SF

u/Srtviper · 1 pointr/indieheads

For at home use I really like my HD6xx's. (See my edited comment above) But with most $200+ desktop focused headset an amp is important to make use of it's full potential. Even a relatively cheap amp/DAC combo can make a big difference. This amp/DAC for example is $65 and would be a big improvement over built in audio from most laptops/desktops.

But if you want something less power hungry Sennheiser HD1's are also a great choice and will work great with a phone. (Also see edited comment above) Or V-Moda M100 are pretty easy to drive if you are looking for something more base focused. Also I've heard really good things about ath m60x's although I haven't tried them myself.

Sorry for asking this question like so many others, but I just wanted to get a second opinion.

I have just purchased a Beyerdynamics DT-770 (250 Ohms). I realized my existing sound card wouldn't be able to power them as well as an amp. I was looking for a headphone amp and I narrowed my selection down to 3.

Massdrop Objective 2 - $95 (Massdrop)

FiiO E10K - $76

FX Audio DAC X6 - $65

Which of these (or others) would you recommend?

Thanks in advance!

u/_F00D · 1 pointr/audio

In terms of a DAC, I run a Schiit Fulla 2, which is an amp/dac combo for 100USD. I know Fiio also offers something similar at the same price.

I have my computer hooked up via USB to my Fulla. The DAC output (on the back) is then connected to my '86 RX-9V that I got for 200 bucks, and I use the 1/4" jack that is already on the Fulla for my headphones since it also functions as an amp.

There are a lot if low-budget USB DACs out there that you could hook to the receiver. You will need to invest in cables and such though, so it's hard for me to say if the way I did it was the cheapest way, but for the performance I get, I feel like I have spent a relatively small amount.

You could easily get an old receiver for around 50 bucks, then spend the other 50 on a small entry-level USB DAC (like this or this), and hook them up with a 3.5mm to RCA (or whatever termination you need for whatever receiver you get). It won't be the most powerful or best sounding system in the world, but it will get the job done.

u/egamble · 1 pointr/audiophile

I would swap the fiio for the fx-audio dac-x6 https://www.amazon.com/dp/B072JJT7SF but I run a similar setup and love it.

One thing to note, the included 3m stickies didn't work well with my headphones (HD 555) and kept coming off. I ended up peeling the sticky off one and epoxying it in place (with a small c clamp for about 24 hours).

u/lurker1337 · 1 pointr/iphone

Currently running IOS 11.1.2 and haven't updated to 11.3 yet.
So far I am having great results with the following set up:

DAC: FX-Audio DAC-X6

Cans: Sennheiser HD598

Cable: Lightning to MIDI Cable, USB 2.0

Waiting on Lightning Cable Splitter so I can charge at the same time. Will report in if all works.

Sometimes I'll get an error that the fx audio isn't compatable because it requires too much power but it is standalone and powers itself so this is just a software issue that it is reporting to iphone too large an amp draw. Unplugging and plugging back in seems to fix the occasional issue. Apparently there is a way to trick the iphone by using a intermediate usb hub to report a lower amperage info here

How do the micca speakers attach to the amp? I see what looks like a plug end on them, not the compression lever wire hole that I have seen on other speakers.

Should I be concerned with a lower frequency response for the sub? Is 30 hz low enough?

How do I balance bass and treble with an amp without the knobs? Through the computer?
