Nanny cams frequently have LEDs, but hidden cameras of the creeper landlord variety frequently don't because the whole point is to be discreet. Someone who lives there is gonna notice it even if it has a window over the LED.

Fun fact: that Amazon listing in the link used to have an example picture of someone installing the thing in a public bathroom.

u/dnoggle · 16 pointsr/pcmasterrace

I installed a Foscam FI9831W and use tinyCam Monitor Pro. Way higher resolution/quality and way cheaper than the video baby monitors out there.

u/hnjngo · 14 pointsr/networking

Holy, 6000km^2 ?! You're talking about one of these Ubiquiti Bullet-M2's?. I have a lot of questions.

How many of them did you need? How long was the network up for? They were run off batteries which needed to be replaced? Were they recovered after? (Is there a forest somewhere with thousands of these things?!)

u/hochizo · 14 pointsr/TheGirlSurvivalGuide
u/TrekkieTechie · 13 pointsr/AskMen

Terrifying.

Wanted to drop by and recommend a DLink DCS-942L. It connects to your home network via WiFi or Ethernet (no computer needed), you can use the MyDlink web site and iOS app to monitor it in real-time, and you can program it to record pictures or video triggered by motion detection (saved to a micro SD card -- sold separately). Sees in the dark, too.

I'm currently using one to monitor an outdoor cat shelter. Here's an example of the video quality in IR (night vision) recording from earlier today. If you require higher quality/HD image, you're gonna have to spring for a DropCam Pro, which is well-reviewed but I personally have no experience with.

I know time is a factor so you can't wait on shipping; Best Buy's website claims "most stores" stock the DropCam Pro (but not lesser models/the DLink).

Good luck to you.

u/Y1ff · 11 pointsr/forwardsfromgrandma

You can buy one on Amazon by the way, if you feel like being a spy.

Don't know how you'd hide one in a bathroom stall though, since they need a power cable and video cable that leads to a DVR to work. It's just a camera sensor, it can't record.

u/gjs520820 · 11 pointsr/HomeImprovement

Take a look on amazon. They have many different types and more reasonable prices. Here is and example

u/justaproxy · 8 pointsr/phoenix

He gets that question a lot. Here's the link:

Buy Dahua or Hikvision POE cameras.

The Dahua 2mp startlight have excellent night vision for about $130 U.S. each. Get the turret style.

If Amazon Canada doesn't sell these cameras then you can deal with the amazon vendor Emprire Technology directly on AliExpress.

Andy is the owner and he has sold security cameras to thousands of north americans. Its important to get the right firmware and to get support if needed. I'm a customer and have no other connections to Andy.

u/camwow13 · 7 pointsr/MovieDetails

That's assuming the camera has an infared LED for night vision. The easiest way to find a hidden camera is buy a 15 dollar doohicky like this. You look through the filter and you can see the reflection of the sensor through the lens as a bright red dot. Here's a video of a guy testing one out. You can search around YouTube for more.

When you can buy a camera that looks like a screw for less than 20 bucks it's not the worst thing in the world to be wary.

u/kibitzor · 6 pointsr/Serendipity

Well an old iPod is about $100, and probably doesn't have an image sensor as good as this one. Plus, how do you get the iPod to do motion detection and be weather resistant? All of a sudden, the price makes a bit more sense.

Go for a $180, lesser quality turret camera and the ipod makes no sense

u/screwedbygenes · 6 pointsr/JUSTNOMIL

I love the Ring doorbell. If you need more views than just looking straight out from your door? https://www.amazon.com/Zmodo-Wireless-Security-Outdoor-Recording/dp/B017SD8RWO/ref=zg_bs_898400_15?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1&refRID=HJJKVT8M70SVHMV4ZRH8 4 cameras, $115, solid quality, and you can access them from an app.

u/DesertPrepper · 6 pointsr/homedefense

Several issues with that article but the main one is the Amazon links to the two cameras below their lists of features (itself a bit of a mess). First, both of the links are to the same product, the Arlo Pro. Second the link is to the add-on camera, which currently shows a price of $169.99. The add-on camera is useless by itself. The link should be to the Arlo Pro Security System with Siren, which is $227.00 with free shipping. The other link should be to the the Arlo VMS3130 Indoor/Outdoor Night Vision Security System with 1 Wire-Free HD Camera, which is $149.00 with free shipping.

The sensors on these are so small and the FOV so wide that what you ask is going to be unlikely. I have 4 megapixel security cams at home as well and still cannot make out license plates. The only camera I have that can resolve license plates is this one: https://www.amazon.com/Optical-Outdoor-Camera-Security-601-D20X/dp/B01HTYW2Q4/

This site kind of goes over what you can expect from various resolutions:

https://reolink.com/4k-security-cameras-top-things-to-consider/

To see plates, you need 4K or 8MP cameras.

This link gives you the math to determine what you should be able to see:

https://reolink.com/can-1080p-ip-security-cameras-identify-license-plate-and-people/

You would need to calculate the FOV determine what you should see.

The deal with these is the wide FOV. And it looks like we need the lens specifics and sensor size to convert the FOV to a ft. measurement. I wonder if even support knows any of that?

My Ring Pro can only see plates within a few feet. I actually could test this and see how far away I can get from it.

Another useful link: https://kintronics.com/calculating-can-see-ip-camera/

"First understand that the number of pixels per ft. (or per m) determines the detail we can see. The higher the resolution of the IP camera, the wider the area we can see at a specific pixel/ft. When there are enough pixels covering a person’s face, we can recognize the person. The lens allows us to frame our field of view. We can select a lens that allows us to see an area 10 ft. (3 m) away or a different lens that magnifies an area that’s over 10,000 ft. (3048 m) away.

The lens controls how wide our field of view will be. The wider our field of view the less pixels per ft (or meter) we will get."

There is a spy camera that looks just like a pen, she could put it in a pencil holder on her desk to record the needed evidence, otherwise it would just be her word against his.

If she uses a laptop with integrated webcam at work, she could also use it to record the video. There are many programs that allow you to do this.

Good luck!

u/Defenestrationism · 4 pointsr/aspergers

Just remember, assaulting kids, even if they are being absolute shits, can get you in a lot of trouble. It's best to try to just leave and avoid further confrontation if you can't summon local authorities in a timely fashion. If something like this ever starts to happen again, it might be a good idea to try to video-record their behavior on a cellphone camera so you can show the cops what they were doing in case they try to lie about it. It might also be a good idea to backup the video to a flashdrive or other media and leave it with a trusted friend/family member before you even contact authorities, just in case the cops or anyone involved in the resulting case happens to be corrupt and the evidence ends up conveniently 'lost'. It's pretty damn hard to lie about what's clear on a video and, if you are in the U.S., in most places it's completely legal to record anything happening in a public space. Privately owned spaces... it depends on local/state laws. Something like this is also potentially very useful if you are wishing to record their behavior on the down-low without them knowing they are being recorded. Just slip it into a breast-pocket on your shirt or into your shirt collar in such a way that the lens is facing outward and stand facing whatever incident is happening for long enough to capture whatever it is.

Edit: be sure you are aware of local/state laws if covertly recording someone. If you do it in an area where it isn't legal, at best it's inadmissible in court, at worst it can result in charges against you, depending on the authorities and laws.

u/PS3s · 4 pointsr/PS3

the bracket is $7 delivered. Right now the 12GB model is the way to go, since it can be had with a game for $170 delivered from amazon. a 500GB bundle is $250. You can get a 500GB drive for $45 delivered easily. adding a $7 bracket still leaves you below the $80 price difference. I suppose if you prefer the games that come with the 500GB (Batman 3: Beyond Gotham & The Sly Collection Bundle) that might make enough of a difference to get the 500GB. But the 500GB will not run without a hard drive, whereas the 12GB will. Something else to consider.

u/tada_hi · 4 pointsr/HomeImprovement

I have Zmodo. I really like them. Sometimes you can get them for 4 for 99.00. They do not have a mic and they are 720p. All mine are outdoor/indoor. Works great.

u/pmYourFears · 4 pointsr/daddit

I bought this guy.

Just needs to be plugged in for power once configured, works off G/2.4ghz WiFi w/ WPA2 so you don't get hacked (do update the firmware if you get it, the stock one has a nasty vulnerability!).

It works well enough and has jacks for a mic and speakers. I plugged in something like this I had laying around and if it's within about 3 feet of him you can hear him stirring and crying from just about anywhere in the room.

Night vision is pretty solid out to about 10 feet or so, so it's good for a nursery.

One thing that works well for me is to wear headphones and turn the camera mic sound way up and turn my game way down so I hear a steady static in the background, and whenever that gets disturbed I can check the other screen.

If you want to share it outside your network be aware it doesn't support HTTPS so you'll be betraying your username and password unless you do a fancy IP camera server / VPN setup. Otherwise, you can download any (often free) IPCam app on your phone and connect to it.

It does have browser support and an onboard web server, but it only works with IE through an activeX control.

So it worked for us, but it's not necessarily the best product out there even in this price range.

u/naedawn · 4 pointsr/dogs

I use Amcrest cameras. There's 2-way audio, pan/tilt with great range, night-vision, and motion detection notifications. Technically there's storage/replay as well but I haven't gotten that set up yet.

u/funkyb · 4 pointsr/predaddit

I picked up a Foscam 8921W for video that we view on our smartphones. We use this vtech monitor for audio. The total cost when I got them was $180, though the Foscam looks to be way cheaper now, so it's only $120ish for the package.

Works great, no complaints.

u/JustinTime1991 · 4 pointsr/hockeyplayers

This is my second attempt at this and this one's a lot smaller footprint since I don't place the skates, gloves, and helmet on it now. This is 1" PVC and just 90' Elbows, T Connectors and Caps. Should be easy to make. I just based the length off the pipes off my equipment. I used a cheap 10$ mattress pump from walmart. It actually has really good airflow out of the small holes I drilled throughout the PVC. For the Gloves and Skates, I decided to use a dual boot drying machine I will put at the base of the PVC. It had good hockey reviews: https://www.amazon.com/DryGuy-Wide-Body-Boot-Glove-Dryer/product-reviews/B0000AMK8R/ref=cm_cr_arp_d_viewopt_kywd?ie=UTF8&reviewerType=all_reviews&showViewpoints=1&sortBy=helpful&pageNumber=1&filterByKeyword=hockey

It should be super easy to add a few pipes that go up at the bottom for skates and gloves if you want. I can count up the number of pieces if needed but should be pretty easy to see from the picture.

u/mr1337 · 3 pointsr/homedefense

Easiest setup will probably be a Dropcam

They're a little bit pricier than regular cameras, and you're paying for the convenience of simple setup.

Otherwise, most IP cameras come with software that will record the footage to your computer, like this Foscam or this D-Link

With the wireless ones, you can just plug it into an outlet without having to worry about the network cable stuff, which helps with flexibility of placement.

u/schmoogina · 3 pointsr/callcentres

This. Honestly, if someone wanted to steal information, airplane mode means the cell detector isn't going to detect anything. Better yet, buy something along the lines of this and you're good. Just treat your employees properly and the risk is mitigated

u/rickman1011 · 3 pointsr/homedefense

I can't comment as a owner, but I've heard quite a lot of discussion regarding the Amcrest and Amcrest Pro, 720P and 1080P respectively. I have three pro's sitting in my wish list at the moment. Seem to be a great value.

u/Kage-kun · 3 pointsr/yakuzagames

If you go to GameStop and get a 12GB PS3 for $100, it'll have far less wear than a normal PS3 console because it can only play a fraction of the games and no one wants to spend the time to upgrade it (or knows how). That's where we're different. Smell the vents for condition and check the laser eye. If it looks good and smells new, and not like tobacco or pets we have a winner.

Grab a hard drive caddy like this one, then get a hard drive like this one.

That drive runs cool, is tougher, installs games faster, and has a 5-year warranty. I've done this very process and it works flawlessly. When you put the drive in the caddy and slide it into the system, the PS3 will automatically recognize it and ask if you want to copy everything to the new drive. You will have a lightly-used 750GB PS3 for $163.

If it's not possible to save up for...See if you can fire up the other system first. High fan speeds mean clogged dust, and many bugbears can be eliminated with a new hard drive. Play a game like Uncharted 2 in it to push the system. If it sounds good after 10-15 minutes of being in game, I don't think anything else is going to challenge it much. The hard drive test will be Yakuza 5. BTW, money is the reason why there's no physical release... Damn mainstream gamers.

Foscam is good. The camera itself has a built in web server, and they have apps on the apple app store. This is the camera I got for our baby's room:

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00F5CTTAU/

(Edit: looks like this is the new version or something...) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B006ZPWS4U

It's got IR, pan/tilt, and a bunch of aftermarket accessories. We bought a wall mount for it and its been rock solid. My only complaint is that you need a browser plugin to control the thing. There is a video stream you can use in vlc though if you don't plan on mucking with the settings or angle after initial setup.

I also second the ubiquiti cameras, they have a feed as well, so you can watch it in vlc or w/e, and they also have GREAT free NVR software you can host yourself on your own server.

u/stomperofwaffles · 2 pointsr/synology

Something with audio is priority for a nanny cam. I have my monitor setup on the crib only, so I don't use it's pan/tilt/zoom much at all. This one would work well though: http://www.amazon.com/Foscam-FI9831W-Megapixel-1280x960p-Wireless/dp/B00HVLDRAQ/ref=zg_bs_14241151_4

Try this Restore File System and this PS3 Rebuild Database.

About the HDD, this one works great for me Seagate 1TB Solid State Hybrid Drive SATA 6Gbps 64MB . You would think it wouldn't work so much with games that are constantly streaming from the HDD like GTA but I think it knows which files are used the most because there's definitely some good improvement, and for other kind of games that load more rarely and mostly the same data it's much better.

If you have the PS3 12GB Model you'll also need a PS3 HDD Mounting Bracket (for around $5 on Amazon) or check this video Upgrade PS3 to 500GB Hard Drive without using HDD Caddy.

Also about Turning it off via the Power Button, I've never had any problem doing that, no corrupt File System or anything. Just don't hold down the Power Button until it turn off because that's forcing it off, just press the button once and let it turn off on his own, it'll take a few seconds but it will.

Indoor 15x15 = wide-angle turret camera. Something like this , which is cheaper than what you listed in your post. Dahua also has some relatively inexpensive ones that I like. Panasonic has their 360-degree offerings you can also take a look at, but they're very pricey.

Driveway + backyard = bullet-style camera. Something like this. I don't know how cold it gets where you're at, but get something that can hack cold temps if it gets chilly.

If you're setting up PoE on an ONVIF-compatible system, you can take advantage of any ONVIF-capable camera (Dahua, Hik, Lorex, HDCam, etc.).

You ever use a boot dryer? I'm assuming snow + wet boots would be one of the issues with smell. I bought myself a (https://www.amazon.com/DryGuy-Wide-Body-Boot-Glove-Dryer/dp/B0000AMK8R) boot/glove dryer and I never looked back. Also what I used to do was immediately throw some laundry in the wash and once I was out of the shower I made sure to pop it in the dryer before I went to sleep.

They make something called the iBaby, that is 200$ and you can view it from any phone, computer or tablet. A friend of mine has it and loves it... after doing quite a bit of research, we found that these are the exact same things, for over 100$ less than the iBaby. Technically, they are a home security device, but it works great. You just download an app called tinycam and you can view it from anything. We have it all set up in our nursery. Picture is great!

Since our family room is at the back of the house, yes! I use the PTZ quite often. It's on a corner mount, on the garage, about 14 feet up, out front. It covers quite well, and is very noticeable to others (which I like). One day, I could hear what turned out to be a pickup truck idling in front of my house, but off to the side, which made no sense. I tapped the PTZ preset for that position. As soon as I did, he sped off. It records 24/7 to a Synology NAS. Mine is this one, without the audio feature:

u/jbigboote · 2 pointsr/PS3

>or you could go with the 12g model for $200 since you already have a HDD.

For anybody considering going this route, you will need a hard drive bracket, as the 12GB Super Slim does not come with one.

u/gh5046 · 2 pointsr/homesecurity

Honestly, it would just be easier not to invite people into your home that you don't trust. To me the safety of my family and personal belongings are more important than dealing with people who have a history of violence, stealing, and sexual assault. I just don't invite them over. Hell, there are a few family members I've told that they are never welcome.

But, that's just me. To answer the actual question:

If you are good with computers you can put a solution together yourself.

For example you could pick up a bunch of Foscam wireless cameras (e.g.
480p,
720p,
960p
) and Blue Iris and use a computer to do the video recording.

If you go down this route do your homework first:

  1. Make sure the cameras you buy are supported by Blue Iris
  2. Use a computer that has a fast enough processor, has plenty of free disk space, and can be on all of the time
  3. If you need indoor and outdoor surveillance make sure you verify the cameras support it. The examples I provided are indoor only.
u/Feltz- · 2 pointsr/homelab

If you don't need all the bells and whistles of a foscam(tilt/pan,wifi) then I highly recommend a hikvision for around the same price. It does 3 megapixel (2048 x 1536) resolution with h264 compression and can power over ethernet. I got a few of them for a business and I'll never go back to the other ip cams. A few of those with a PoE switch and blue iris and you've got a pretty high end system(for a house) for not much.

u/JoshuaRWillis · 2 pointsr/sanfrancisco

Yup, really pleased with this Dropcam Pro so far.

u/Switcher15 · 2 pointsr/homedefense

I wanted a full PTZ camera that could do license plates as well. Live on a dead end street and have people driving through my yard. I went with this SUNBA: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01HTYW2Q4

I have had no issues with it and never use the IR mode because the street and parking lot lights are enough where I am at. Here are some night time shots https://imgur.com/a/3nxBWdU It's really hard to get a moving plate, but with this camera there is a much greater chance then most.

u/MelkorBaug · 2 pointsr/liveaboard

Possibly look into the bullet2 wifi and an omni antenna? The bullet can be configured to grab WiFi and act as the access point for a router in your boat. amazon

u/drbudro · 2 pointsr/NewParents

We got the same one for $60, and the new HD version is still only $75.

The IR/night vision is fantastic and the motor for the pan/tilt is quiet enough to not wake the baby. The app has everything we need and the whole package was easily half the cost of every "baby monitor" we saw. It also has a two way mic/speaker and comes with mounting hardware.

I highly recommend it.

u/allhatenocattle · 1 pointr/dropcam

Nest hasn't sold a Dropcam branded product in a while, it was likely a 3rd party seller, although on the Amazon site it can be confusing about the manufacturer vs the seller.

For example: https://www.amazon.com/Dropcam-Wireless-Monitoring-Security-Camera/dp/B00F9FCW7K

The title says: Dropcam Pro Wifi Wireless Video Monitoring Security Camera by Nest

but if you look at the small print, it says "sold by AG LLC".

I think your best course of action is to file a complaint with the Amazon seller that they sold an unsupported version of the product and ask for a refund.

The Hikvisions may not work with them, unless you can confirm that it will, I would stick to Lorex cameras. Looking at the Lorex cameras, most Hikvision models seem to have a Lorex equivalent.

A good general purpose PoE camera is the turret-style Hikvision 2332-I. The closest Lorex model seems to be this one.
What features would you like in the camera, and where are you going to install it. As mentioned in my guide, these factors affect the model you should choose.

fair enough. If you're gonna purchase a couple cameras, throw one of these into the mix....

ONVIF compliant like the others, relatively cheap.

You could buy a Wyze cam for $19.99 its a internet connected smart cam, its really, really small. It can record all motion events and even live-stream or give you notifications:

Or, if you want to go a bit more covert, you could go for something like this:

i don't think your quality issue is with the processing in the camera, you're just starting with a low res feed.

you probably would want something like 4 or 5MP.

reolink are ridiculously cheap and somehow still have decent reviews, although i've heard people here recommending dahua instead. i usually use hikvision equipment, but they are 2x the price of reolink.

either way, the larger the lens, the more zoomy the camera. so you may get better use from a 4mm or 6mm, so you can place the camera further from the hive. also, any camera you pick should have options to how you want to encode the video for transmission, so there will be options for more or less compression done by the camera itself.

Questions:

Is your property fenced? That is generally the most practical way to keep out unwanted trespassers. If you have acreage, what about fencing off your house/workshop?

What sort of video system are you looking into? I've never HEARD of one costing $5,000 unless it's a commercial grade. You probably just need a few cameras that are motion activated and automatically send their footage to a cloud-based storage system. I do not believe those generally run more than $100 a piece, and I'm sure you can get them for much cheaper. I'm not the best person to ask on this, but here is a 4 camera system for ~$100.

Also, stop talking to your neighbors entirely. It's clear nothing good will come of that.

My DH did a ton of research on cameras. He wanted one that we could use with our cell phones so that he could watch her at work. This is a webcam that you can set up on your WIFI, and use to watch on your phone and computer. It is MUCH cheaper than comparable "baby monitors" and has the best ratings and quality we have seen.

u/Knerk · 1 pointr/security

Agree totally on the physical security coming first. If you get locks, alarms and make you space a hard target you are much better off. Cameras should come after.

The way I see it is that when you do start getting into getting cameras it is better have good coverage rather than a single camera or nothing at all. Company longevity & support aside, some folks need multiple cameras & cannot drop $200 each then $300+ per camera needed a year to get cloud recording out of it. You can have a camera with 4k definition but if you can only afford the one and it is not pointed where the problem was then you go right back back to the paperweight scenario, this time being out 3 times the monthly fee. If you can afford all the Dropcam cameras & rmr services you need at that price point then get it. But if you still need some surveillance then Imogen or like can still be an option. It will not be blurry like the Zapruder film and can still be crucial providing detail to the police. I would rather have all the lower PPF cameras I need than little to none at all.

It is all balance, really Dropcams are a great product & do what they do better than most. I just know a minimum $300 per camera per year price for service is too much for some folks to pay in perpetuity. Of course some people don't want to have to pay anything per month to keep recordings and look to wif cameras with local storage like Samsung Samsung SmartCam but that comes with it's own drawbacks as well.

u/CamusAran · 1 pointr/PS3

If it's the super slim you'll probably need a HDD mount thingy since it doesn't come with one by default (you're not replacing a HDD, the 12gb is flash memory).

Thanks for all the replies here, after reading reviews of the suggested cams and going down the Amazon rabbit hole I think I'm going to try the Amcrest HDSeries (http://www.amazon.com/dp/B017L1JOX4). Will report back with how it works - it appears to be everything I want plus some and the reviews look stellar.

I almost went with the Foscam, but lots of reviews stating the latest firmware update causes issues with the motion sensing. That simply won't do.

Also, SanDisk SD cards on sale on Amazon today. Great timing, me.

You'll be wasting a lot of money since it's incredibly low risk.

I'd honestly just pick up an Arlo if you feel the need for some additional security.

u/MrHaVoC805 · 1 pointr/homeautomation

What sort of technology are you looking for to accomplish your goal (z-wave, WiFi, RF, etc)? There's tons of solutions but it all depends on what you want to accomplish.

As far as IFTTT and Alexa, not sure what you want out of that. Sure IFTTT can send you notifications when the gate is closed or not, but Alexa can really only check status of certain devices or change state (on/off) of others.

If it were me I'd just get an Arlo Pro camera and put it near the gate.
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01LR8PG52/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_mmo-ybEBTRDRA

That way you'd get a notification if it saw movement at the gate and then you can visually confirm if it's any actual problem or just your kids. Plus it's got the added capability of two way audio and if it were a real problem the camera's base station is a pretty loud siren and you can set it off to scare a prowler away or to alert someone in the home.

u/mactaggart · 1 pointr/videosurveillance

I bought one of these a few months ago, and it works well in pretty much every indoor situation.

It has a wide lens, nightvision IRs and WDR for backlighted subjects.

Hope that helps!

u/SnappyCrunch · 1 pointr/techsupport

An IP Camera isn't too expensive, and can be viewed from anywhere in the world with a computer or your phone. It's also pretty inconspicuous, but I wouldn't expect to hide it from someone who's supposed to be cleaning, and thus hopefully looking into nooks and crannies. You could hide the camera inside something else, but then you lose the pan/tilt ability, unless your enclosure pan/tilts with it.

Dedicated IP Spy cameras cost a whole lot more, though.

u/SaSSafraS1232 · 1 pointr/surfing

Get one of these. Use it every time.

Edit: Actually, I think this is the one I have.

u/molo1134 · 1 pointr/electronics

He is referring to cheaper models like this: the M2 which can be coupled with a directional antenna for a not-excessive amount of money.

u/securitytech · 1 pointr/homedefense

I use those cameras every now and then. They have DWDR which is Digital Wide Dynamic Range. Its still really good and the majority of the cameras that i install have this type of WDR. Ive imported chinese Hikvision and imported straight from alibaba so any place you get them is fine its more just about the price. You might get a dud one here and there but that happens to everyone, so any supplier is fine.

I usually prefer [this] (http://www.amazon.com/Hikvision-DS-2CD2332-I-Turret-Network-Camera/dp/B00GYHEG0S/ref=sr_1_10?s=photo&ie=UTF8&qid=1452922370&sr=1-10&keywords=hikvision+3mp) style of camera as the IR is focused on the center of the image and it wont reflect off the plastic shell.

u/dahlberg123 · 1 pointr/Ubiquiti

I've looked at quite a few cameras and the Ubiquiti stuff just doesn't hold up against other brands that cost significant'y less. Take a look at ipcamtalk.com if you haven't already, Dahua has some nice stuff, this is pretty solid for the $$$ https://www.amazon.com/EmpireTech-IPC-HDW2231R-ZS-Starlight-Eyeball-Network/dp/B07DRC93S8/ref=sr_1_1?m=A329YQ83EBQGJF&qid=1572451662&s=merchant-items&sr=1-1

I have a 4-pack of Reolink R410-S cameras. They're PoE (Power Over Ethernet) wired on my network. Each camera also has a 16gb memory card and acts as its own DVR. There's an interactive app that can load/control the camera's via uPNP - so they work locally or remotely without any cloud involvement. So far, very pleased.

One of the current models is here - you'll need to add a memory card for recording - but it'll get audio and video in high res.

u/zer0fks · 1 pointr/networking

We have towers with an antenna like this on a Ubiquiti Bullet M2 and trucks with the same Bullet M2 and this antenna. We're able to get out about a mile; onmi antennas should work just fine for you. You might want to investigate if you need 5Ghz though since the 2.4Ghz range might already be saturated if everyone else has a similar setup; run a tool like Inssider (version 3 was free) to see what's out there and to select your channel once you have it up and running.

I'm all for what this project involves (mcu, spi camera, jpeg encoding, spi wifi, smtp, logging, battery & conservation, etc) but by the time you integrate it all you'll have spent over $150 and all your koi will be gone.

amcrest makes an amazing camera that does all this reliably (sans battery), and also costs less than you'd spend on a DIY solution.

If you're just looking to make the stream public... I stream (rtsp) my weather cam through OBS to youtube when there is something worth streaming.

If you actually want to give public control to a cam... I got nothing for you.

u/nizo505 · 1 pointr/homedefense

I've used these for awhile now, and they are ok:
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B017SD8RWO

The only issue I've run into was the last time they wanted to update the firmware it bricked one of the cameras. Zmodo does have cloud storage (base is free, you'll potentially want more than that) but for ~$230 for eight cameras it's most likely the cheapest solution you'll find out there.

u/AlphaAnt · 1 pointr/predaddit

You're probably better off getting separate devices. The IP cameras are not stable enough in my opinion to be relied on (what happens when the camera locks up or the often-poorly-written software crashes?), whereas the standard audio monitors don't have that issue.

I ended up getting a Foscam camera and a Philips Avent DECT audio monitor.

u/ruckertopia · 1 pointr/homelab

I can't remember where I saw it, but there is a thread somewhere comparing a bunch of different cameras from a bunch of different manufacturers. The thing that stuck out was how different some of them were, even though they had similar, or in some cases identical specifications. Things like fov and resolution rarely matched up with the spec.

This is the camera I currently have in my cart, I'll do some more research before pulling the trigger, but based on that thread, this seems to be the best bang for the buck right now (that fits my current needs)

Go with a Dropcam - records to cloud, so even if they stole the camera, you have the footage. It's dead simple to setup, has night vision, and has a mic/speaker. It can notify your phone when it sees movement, and if you see someone in your place when you're not there, you can yell at them remotely :)

Google bought them last year, and they're now part of Google's Nest division. It's not super cheap, but it's good quality and easy to use.

Amazon Link for reviews. Good luck, it's a shitty situation.

Yes, I'm doing direct to disk recording. Here are the cameras I'm using:

https://www.amazon.com/Reolink-Surveillance-Security-Detection-RLC-410-5MP/dp/B07C5JWK4K

I'm using a Dell Optiplex i7, 12GB Ram, etc.

I've messed around with the FPS, but I read that BI will always auto- adjust it upwards so it's worthless to set the limit.

I don't see an option to change my resolution though, where is that located? I guess I was just surprised that changing from Direct to Disk recording didn't give me that reduction like everyone says. I changed it and then restarted, literally no change.
