Personally, I'd go with something like this

u/modernotter · 44 pointsr/pokemon

They have decks like these designed to learn the game:
https://www.amazon.com/Pokémon-TCG-Trainer-Lycanroc-Alolan/dp/B01N6TC9MD/ref=mp_s_a_1_4?keywords=pokemon+cards+starter+kit&qid=1573834186&sprefix=polemon+cards+s&sr=8-4

It’ll have two 30 card decks instead of the full 60 card deck so it’s quicker and usually the cards are less complicated. It will also come with a paper board... no board is needed once you know the game better though.

Since people have covered the "what do I do with my abilities", here's a couple notes on supplies.

The Player's Handbook has a good selection of supplies. Ask your DM what your funds are (or if you're limited to your standard starting goods), and browse.

In general, my recommendation for a new player is to take:

  • a weapon that seems fun or flavorful (for a cleric, you probably want a one-handed weapon, so you can still cast),

  • a generic adventurer's pack of your choice (it's a good "starter pack" of sorts),

  • an item of personal value or superstition to your character (a cleric will have a holy symbol, but is there something else they hold valuable? There's also a table for selecting a valueless free trinket in the player's handbook)

And then, if you have any remaining gold, I would recommend saving some of it (your character should still be able to afford food and lodging)- but honestly, just have a look through the equipment tables and see what's interesting for the rest. A mirror for looking around corners? Extra lamp oil? Whatever you think your character will use and what tells a good story.

    As for outside-the-game equipment:

  • A good character sheet (the default's fine!)

  • Pencil, and spare paper of some sort (you don't want to note-take everything, but noting things your character would remember that you may not will save your hide.

Most other materials are extras, and "nice to haves".

If you end up playing a lot, you can also purchase:

  • A deck of spell cards for your class of choice (5E Cleric/etc cards here) - this is to make spellcasting easier to track. There's also a variety of digital tools for this, though - I just personally prefer keeping my phone and computer put away if possible, to prevent being distracted

  • If playing in-person, you might consider finding a miniature to represent a character that you are fond of and you believe to be long-term. I wouldn't do this unless you've played for a bit, love your character, and trust your group to continue. Also, keep in mind that depending on group your character can die. Buy figures for characters you want to remember after the game is over, or you could reuse. Some people use HeroForge for this, but there's no shame in a generic mini.

    TLDR
The Player's Handbook will generally not guide you wrong in terms of reccomended starting equipment- there should be some notes in the class and background that you've chosen.

Outside the game, the general rule is bring you, your character sheet, a pencil, and a willingness to roleplay and learn. You'll figure out what else you want as you go.

In general: this game is fun, do what you think will be fun, and don't worry too much about being effective! For your abilities, trust the advice of the wizened gurus who have posted their advice - but keep in mind, ultimately, the goal you have is to have fun, and so you should take what you think would be cool.

What budget are you considering? You can build fairly cohesive and decent commander decks for ~$20. Is the $80 total out of the price range?

There is Game Night which is 5 decks meant to be played out of the box against each other, kinda treating it as if it was a board game. It's $35-$40.

Card Kingdom does a bunch of budget stuff. If you like drafting they have a $100 Starter Cube which lets you draft over and over with it.

They also have Battle Decks which are $10 decks that are all roughly designed to be played against each other, and might be your best option (especially if you want to be able to pick what decks to play and expand it with new decks).

They also have Sparring Decks which are similar but are brawl decks instead (which is a format a bit more conducive to multiplayer). A bunch of these cards will rotate soon so you might want to wait to see if they release new ones with Eldraine's release, but if it's just between friends you can also expand the rules of brawl to be non-rotating (you'll follow along with "historic"'s legality).

If you can find them, I highly recommend the spellbook cards. I give them to my players and it just makes life soo much easier without having to flip back and forth the PHB for your spells and lists.

The briefcases are Solo Grand Central Attaché Cases.
On the outside each one got an Engraved Plaque with the groomsman's name and nickname.
The axe is a Columbia River CRKT Birler Compact Axe.
The liqueur is a small bottle of JW Black Label 200ml.
The little silver oval is a collapsible shot glass.
Vintage Bicycle Cards.
The inside is cut EVA foam stacked three high, carved to hold the items, glued together, covered in red velvet cloth from Hobby Lobby, adhered with Gorilla spray adhesive.
The straps are leather bracelets (also from Hobby Lobby) dyed black using Fiebing's Leather Dye, with a bronze topper (brads?) to cover the screw anchoring them in place.
I don't have a good shot of the inside top, but there is a cigar (I forget which brand, I'm not really a cigar guy). They were rectangular. You can see it at the top of the third shot.
Also a silver pen, a cigar cutter, a small survival tool, a credit card knife, and an Oz-Kurt engraved flip knife.
I also wrapped the axe handle in a Leather strapping to give it some extra texture.

Whelp, I THINK that's everything. Thanks for taking interest in my post!

I bought one here

https://www.amazon.com/CUSTOM-Playmat-Any-image-want/dp/B00L9EZC2C/ref=cm_cr_arp_d_product_top?ie=UTF8

$14 relatively cheap for a custom mat, and the quality is pretty decent imo. Makes sure you have a high resolution image to send in though. The higher the res the better the print quality.

Magic: Game Night is one of the best tools I've found for that kind of thing. And since getting it I've actually used it to introduce 7 people to the game, leading to a really smooth onboarding process.

EDIT: After reading some of your comments below, it seems to be geared towards your situation in particular with a group of 5.

My go to links would be: http://www.thefreerpgblog.com/2011/11/how-to-write-free-rpg-prologue.html and https://hamsterprophet.wordpress.com/rpg-design-handbook/

Foremost he should read and play more games, so any basic rule books are probably good too. For example: Apocalypse World and it's derivate Dungeon World (which has a SRD), Fate Core and Fate Accelerated and also any of the 3 FFG Star Wars RPGs, for example, Edge of the Empire.

I don't know what gaming background your son has, but I somewhat expect D&D. Get him to read more games.

  • Two 30-card decks, each with a specially selected foil card
  • Two guided game booklets to teach yo how to play, card by card, step by step
  • 2-Player playmat with great game tips and rules on the reverse side
  • Damage counters, special condition markers and a game coin with a cool Pokemon design
u/Valafaar · 7 pointsr/StarWars

There are a few systems. I would recommend Fantasy Flight Games' systems.

Edge of the Empire is focused on the scum and villains of the Star Wars universe. The smugglers, bounty hunters, and crimelords.

Age of Rebellion is focused on the war between the Empire and the Rebellion. This is the world of soldiers, pilots, and spies.

Force and Destiny isn't out yet, but it's what you want to play if you're into the world of the Jedi and Sith.

These are all compatible with each other, and can be run as their own game, or combined together. I'm a big fan of them, and if you're looking for anything in the original trilogy era, these will do pretty well.

u/Danwarr · 6 pointsr/boardgames

Ahh, maybe it's an Amazon vs. Ellusionist thing - On the Ellusionist page it makes it super clear that they're marked - big bold letters, right at the top, and even talks about how nicely they are hidden in the back design.

On the Amazon page it still says that they're marked, but it's in a bullet-point in the product description, and is probably easier for someone to miss.

Still kind of funny to me though - people buying it and being upset thinking that the bonus queen means they have an incomplete deck, without realizing that there is an even more fundamental reason why they oughtn't be using the deck for poker night...

Love Letter - Ultra fun game for 2 to 4 players, super small, super simple, but tons of replayability. One of my favorite games ever, and a hit with everyone. Currently $8 on amazon.

Coup- Super basic social deduction game, tons of fun for not a lot of money. More complicated than Love Letter, but not very difficult. The hardest part about teaching a younger kid this game is the idea that you can (and should) lie to your friends. Currently $9 on amazon.

Red 7 - This is a small 2-4 player game, super fun, super simple. Currently $9 on amazon

Basically, you can get all three of these for ~$25.

You can always find your local game store that is hosting the Shadows over Innistrad prerelease this April 2nd and 3rd and preregister. Like a Yu-gi-oh prerelease, you get 6 packs of cards from the upcoming set and make a deck of 40 cards to play against other newbies and veterans. You and your friend can even participate in the two-headed giant event which is similar to double dueling from Yu-Gi-Oh except you share one life total. They will release a Shadows Over Innistrad prerelease primer in the upcoming weeks which will list how to build a deck and what to expect. Here is a prerelease primer from the most recent set. It's pretty helpful since the tips on building a deck is still relevant. If you guys don't know mechanics, I'd suggest playing the most recent [duel deck] (http://www.amazon.com/MTG-Magic-Gathering-Pre-Order-February/dp/B018DDZICA/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1457596721&sr=8-1&keywords=blessed+vs+cursed). The decks are balanced against each other and even contains cards from the upcoming prelease, Shadows over Innistrad. You guys can also get the most recent deck builder's toolkit and build 40 card decks to practice for the prerelease since it also contains some cards in the competitive scene except for the Journey of Nyx booster pack.

I found this one which is a bit less expensive and it looks like it gives you four of them. Depending on how deep the groove the cards sit in is he might need to pull them out to check P/T, but it wouldn't block any rules text.

I suspect that these are trading card storage boxes, and/or box from an Magic Origins Deck Builder's Toolkit, and/or Magic Origins Fat Pack (these are now renamed "<name of set> Bundle") box.

Is anyone willing to share their kids' absolute favorite toys/games/crafting supplies? (We have two girls ages 4 & 7.) I'm trying to be a lot more selective to avoid the toymaggedon that invariably happens every year when we end up with a lot of crap they don't care about or play with. And I refuse to get on the LOL doll/Pikmi Pops bandwagon because they are fun for the 3 minutes they spend opening them and then zero interest afterwards.

I'll share a few of our favorites in case anyone else is in the same boat:

7 y.o. loves: Uno (card game), Math Slam game,

4 y.o. loves: Melissa & Doug housekeeping set, M&D play kitchen

Both girls are obsessed with drawing/coloring with oil pastels

Family games we all love playing together: HeadBanz, Zingo, Monopoly Junior,

u/beSmrter · 3 pointsr/boardgames

u/slashbored covered the bulk of the options, for sure. I'll underline that each game will likely want something slightly different. At least for maximum efficiency, there isn't a one size fits all so counting 12 games and buying 12 Planos may not be the best idea.

Considering the setup, play, and clean-up processes and looking to eliminate time bottlenecks will help guide you. For example, multi-section Plano style boxes are really cool...for some things. But keeping 5 denominations of coins all in separate compartments adds a lot of clean-up time when players (or you) have to re-sort the huge pile of individual coins used throughout the game back into their individual sections. In that case, it's easier to shift all that time to the players, a few seconds here and there fishing their change out from a mixed bowl or two through out the game and reduce the clean-up to just seconds of dumping the bowl into a single ziploc.

On the other extreme, searching for one or two chits of a particular unit type in a whole pile of chits (of many unit types) is silly; multi-section boxes or GMT style counter trays are definitely the way to go.

I'd recommend must haves as:

  • set of silicon muffin cups or small condiment cups or dishes to hold bits during play

  • 6-12 single section tupperware style boxes in the 2-3" range (store all the pieces for a single player in one, pass out, play, clean-up easy-peasy)

  • 25-50 small ziplocs in two sizes, ~3x4" and ~1x2"

Other options for organization during play (links for example, rather than specific product recommendations):

  • lazy suzans or make-up caddies

  • card stands or business card holders

  • dice trays

    Inside the box:

  • alternative to Plano, off-brand bead and jewelry organizers are often thinner, lighter plastic in a greater variety of dimensions for more options and easier to fit in game boxes

  • Deck boxes, also available in several other sizes

  • Dry Vinyl Tape, only sticks to itself. Good alternative to deck boxes and really great for large tiles and map pieces, etc.

Fluxx is super fun. That's the link to the original version but they have lots of themed and branded versions too. Star Fluxx, Stoner Fluxx, Monty Python Fluxx, Batman Fluxx, Chemistry Fluxx, Zombie Fluxx, and lots more. Pick your favorite or get the original.

Fluxx is fun because the goal of the game can change during the game. You might be just about to win and then the goal changes. The rules can change mid-game too, but it's pretty simple to understand. You pick up X cards each turn and you play X cards each turn. How many can change at any time. Some games will end quick and some will be a good long twisting journey of fun. You'll definitely want to play another game when one ends. And if you ever have guests over, it plays really well with 3-5 people too.

I don't know where you live, but in the states you can order something online for cheap. Here is a $14 deal with free shipping for a custom mat. I haven't ordered from them but the reviews seem good and include pictures.

Other suggestion: Playing card holders.

They're helpful for children, elderly people, anyone with limited mobility or dexterity, and anyone who just doesn't like holding a giant fistfull of cards.

They come at every price point, from $7/4 (link) to $16/4 (link) to a full set of five walnut holders (and an extra, designed specially for TTR) for $50 (link).

I would be SUPER STOKED to get some as gifts, and there are cool DIY versions, too.

~$50 and an app and a literally infinite amount of Star Wars stuff to explore. Or Imperial Assault is a one time purchase. Both are expandable but don't beg for them in the way that FFG's other things do. Is the initial cost high? Yes. But if you allot for the cost and are such a dedicated Star Wars fan the hundreds of hours that you could get out of either package should make up for it.

It's $75 on amazon https://www.amazon.com/Star-Wars-Rebellion-Board-Game/dp/B017MLIGP0/

Just One is FABULOUS and takes two seconds to learn! You can easily take it out of the box and travel with it in a baggy!

Avalon/Werewolf social deduction type games are fun for big groups!

Age of War is a small push your luck die roll game (not the best for a big group but for a portion of the group)

Box of Rocks is a trivia type game where it is all humans versus a box of rocks

Set is good solitaire or with big groups but is going to cause lots of head scratching. It's good for those who like puzzles!

Red7 is a personal favorite but doesn't play to 10 people

u/The_Rooster · 2 pointsr/boardgames

Sorry I've not played Thunderstone or Dominion either. But I have been thinking of getting Summoner Wars for a while now. I seem to often see Thunderstone and Summoner Wars talked about together. No idea if they are similar as I've never investigated Thunderstone.

That said the great value for money Master Set of Summoner Wars is a great price on Amazon at the moment for $36.80. From what I understand this is a starting set that has everything you need including 6 faction decks.

Summoner Wars

Not sure if it is what you are after but might be worth investigating. Might even add that to the basket myself :)

Apples to Apples, Dixit, Jungle Speed, Pictionary, Anomia, SET, Loaded Questions, and Jenga are a few that come to mind where the adults wouldn't necessarily have an advantage over the kids. Also Fluxx and We Didn't Playtest This are both hilarious card games that would be perfect for kids in that age range, but I have a blast playing them with other adults on a regular basis too; Spaceteam looks like another good one but I haven't personally played it. If you're looking for more involved strategy games, Ticket to Ride and Carcassone would be fine for that age, just require more of a learning curve. Cranium and Quelf are silly games that involve a variety of tasks (drawing, acting, singing, trivia, etc) and although they're supposedly aimed at adults, kids love them too (just skip cards that are too hard; or you could also consider the kids' versions of both games, Cranium Cadoo and Quelf Jr.). Uno (or Crazy Eights with a regular deck of cards) is always a classic, and you can always play charades or the category game!

edited to add: not sure about a good choose your own adventure story, but Mad Libs are always fun!

u/alexjuuhh · 2 pointsr/Yogscast

Game's called Snake Oil and it can be found on Amazon.

u/99dunkaroos · 2 pointsr/TwoXChromosomes

I've taken Snake Oil to both family Christmas and parties with "bombastic liberal arts majors." Basically, you draw two cards and pitch a fake product you make up based on those cards. One player is the "customer" (judge) and selects a winner. It's very much what each player makes of it, so one person can pitch something very raunchy and perhaps the MOH would make up a more conservative pitch.

Classics like Scattergories & Pictionary are "what you make of them" games. Taboo and Catchphrase are conservative though they do get old quickly. Telestrations, suggested earlier, is also great - although you can DIY it with a deck of index cards.

A 3rd party company sells a wedding themed Cards Against Humanity. It's called Cads About Matrimony.

Pack a mocktail or sparkling cider for her and I bet she'd be okay with a few drinking games.

Good luck!

Buy some dice.

Buy some books.

Honestly, it depends what kind of game you want to play. I think here you're going to get a lot of weird niche games suggested but for starters you're better off sticking with the a more 'traditional' experience. D&D is an excellent starting point if you want to play a fantasy game, you can even pick up one of their adventures if you don't want to write your own material.

If you're unsure about spending that much just to get started you can pick up this starter set that will include the basic rules, a set of dice, some pregenerated characters, and a short adventure. From there, if you like the game, you can pick up the full rulebooks and some more dice and whatever else you like. Alternatively you can try out the free basic rules by downloading them from the Wizards of the Coast website. All you'll need is a set of dice to get started.

If you don't like or don't want to play D&D you can check out a bunch of other systems that will let you play other games or settings. [Edge of the Empire] (https://www.amazon.com/Star-Wars-Edge-Empire-Rulebook/dp/1616616571/ref=sr_1_1?keywords=edge+of+the+empire&qid=1563883870&s=gateway&sr=8-1) is a really cool Star Wars game, but it requires custom dice. My personal favourite sci-fi rpg is Traveller though, and it has the advantage of only requiring six sided dice.

A lot of people really like Savage Worlds, it's fun, it's cheap, and it's generic enough that you can run almost any setting you like with it. Unfortunately there's a new edition due out really soon so take that in to consideration. If you want a more in depth generic system then I can recommend GURPS, although you'll also need the Campaigns book. This system is absolutely not beginner friendly, it slaps you in the face with tables and rules for all sorts of scenarios, but I adore it and it's not really all that hard to figure out.

If you want an alternative to D&D Green Ronin has the "Age" series of games, starting with Fantasy Age, continuing with Modern Age, and the recently released The Expanse RPG covers Sci-Fi. I will admit that I've not actually had a chance to play any of these games, but I've read the rules and like the system.

Honestly you can find a game to cover practically any genre you want, whether it's Grimdark Fantasy, Martial Arts, Space Exploration, Lovecraftian Horror, Anime Cyberpunk Space Opera, or almost any other thing you can think of.

Don't fall in to the trap of playing a game because someone suggests it's 'easy', play something that really grabs your interest and inspires your imagination.

Definitely talk to the judges ahead of time. But you have a legit handicap so I would be very surprised if they don't accommodate you.

The easiest solution is to just bring a friend/family member along with you to be your hands. It should be allowed, just notify the judges first. If that's not feasible or just you'd rather not, here are my suggestions:

Shuffling is actually not a problem at all, since your opponent is free to cut/re-shuffle your deck after any time you shuffle, to prevent cheating. So you'll just cut out the part where you shuffle ask your opponent to do all your shuffling. Just explain the situation to them. Again, I would be very surprised if someone wasn't willing to help out.

For holding your cards during a game, you could probably bring something like this.

Drafting does seem like a challenge. My solution is to ask the person drafting immediately before you to not put the cards down on the table. Rather, ask them to hold them for you while you look at the cards. They just picked so they're not gaining any info by watching you look at the cards. Once you decide on a pick, remember where in the pack your card is (like, how many cards from the back it's positioned) and ask them to put the cards facedown on the table. Then slide your card out, and push the pile along to the next drafter.

In addition to others mentioned, Monikers (just bring a partial deck or one of the expansion packs, that's all the cards you need for this purpose) and Spyfall. Dragoon also has a fabric board so it's easy to carry, but takes a bit of time. And of course, Win, Lose, Banana.

During the release of Solo: A Star Wars Story, there was a release of a game not-so-cleverly called "Star Wars Han Solo Card Game."

It’s essentially Sabacc and has Sabacc cards. Maybe it’s not 100% the in-universe game, but it looks like a solid stand in. At the bare minimum you get a Sabacc deck!

In my opinion, the most important thing is to have fun and to play what you think makes sense for your character. Is your character an experienced martial artist: you could use a longsword, are they more the rough and tumble type: warhammer.

As for playing: make sure you at least know your abilities and the rules involved. As a DM I can positively say there is little as annoying as people not knowing what they can do, or worse, thinking they know how it works and getting annoyed when you tell them it's wrong.

As a nice utility if you have 20 bucks to spare: there are spell cards you can buy for cleric, which makes keeping track of your prepared spells a whole lot easier!

boardgamegeek.com is a good resource for learning about games you might want to buy or just games in general. Usually games in the top 200 are pretty good games overall.

as far as cheaper options go, Arkham Horror is thematically very similar to Eldritch Horror, but it's a card game instead of a board game and thus cheaper. They are both made by Fantasy Flight Games. It's about $40. The benefit of Arkham Horror is that it has a plethora of expansions, and therefore this is a gift that you can add to in the future if you guys really like it. HOWEVER, I'm trying to decide myself if this is something I want on my christmas list.

One final thing, Shut Up & Sit Down is a very well made youtube channel that reviews board games. I find their reviews really insightful and helpful. You can watch their Eldritch Horror review and their Arkham Horror review to gauge the differences between the games.

as far as fallout and This War of Mine, I don't really knw.

I agree - I'd be thrilled to get a nice set of wooden card holders. Quick search finds these for $15 on Amazon.

u/hritter · 2 pointsr/gamingsuggestions

I'd like to suggest stacking games. They seem to be a safe bet; they don't require reading comprehension, can be quick and decisive, and does not need alot of strenuous dexterity (depending on your table).

Click Clack Lumberjack has you whack away a tree with a plastic axe. It's pretty fun. You can also try its sequel, Bling Bling Gemstone, which plays the same way but for Gems.

There's also Animal Upon Animal where you stack wooden animals on top of each other based on what dice value you roll.

For something with words, I suggest Red 7, a more balanced and strategic version of UNO Cards and Fluxx. The words are single-sentence rules, and mostly its the numbers and colors that are significant.

i would start by advising some QoL adjustments to his spell sheet - i myself, ESPECIALLY for classes like clerics which have their full spell list, like to color-code things that i can do on a bonus action and/or that take concentration, and ofc mark off anything that's domain, from a feat, from a race, etc so i don't confuse myself when prepping my shit. that on its own can clear up a lot. if i, say, use my action to toll the dead, i'll take a quick scan through my spell sheet, look for the blue dots i used to mark off bonus actions, and maybe throw out a healing word or spiritual weapon. it can also help to make an additional, filtered list of actions, bonus actions, etc that you use commonly - going through your entire spell sheet and character sheet can be overwhelming, so having a condensed list of everything you use frequently in one place can be handy.

i also went ahead and invested in spell cards and card pages to keep them in - having them as a quick reference is handy, i just keep them in the same binder i keep my sheets in and flip to them when i need to make some decisions.

i will say, the main thing that keeps my cleric so busy in combat is his personality. he's VERY protective, always concerned about his party members, so when i play him in combat, i'm usually trying frantically to make the most of my turn to that effect. i'll use sanctuary on the utility-focused bard and use my movement to get in front of everyone to take hits, or healing word the barbarian while using my action to pry the monk out of a monster's grip, to use some examples from my last session. obviously that kind of thing is gonna differ from character to character, but he could try, if he hasn't already, thinking about what specifically his character wants to accomplish in the average combat, and from there, think every turn about how to best use the tools available to achieve that goal.

May be best to try it out at a friendly local game store first. It has lots of upside down text (unless you play your cards upside down so you opponent can easily read them all) and rules exceptions like a typical American style card game, so if you have friends okay with that, you're good to go.

D&D Basics (Getting started)

The Absolute Basics

First you will want to grab either the Basic rules (Free), the Starter Set (Cheap), or the Players handbook, Dungeon Masters Guide, and Probably Monster Manual

Then you need to have at least a few items

  • Dice (Phone apps will work if absolutely necessary, or these)
  • Paper & Pencil (for notes)
  • Character Sheet (In the free PDF or an app)

The starter set is nice because it does a bunch of the work for you, it has an easy to follow adventure, pre-made characters, Dice, and rules for the DM and players. And at half the cost of just the players handbook AND including an adventure, it is an incredible value.

Once you finish that then looking at at least a players handbook for the extra races, classes, backgrounds, and other things is a good deal. That should let you run free adventures people have put online.

The DM's guide will let you get deeper into rules and the right way to call them, break them, and make them.

The monster manual can be a great tool to make better encounters.

If you want to run a commercial adventure after the one's included in the starter set, "Tales from the Yawning Portal" includes the Sunless Citidel, considered by many to be an excellent adventure for those new to the game and just recently brought up from 3.5e into 5e

    Common Tools of the Trade

As you start running more complex adventures you are going to want to have a few tools to keep things moving, either as a player or as a DM.

    As a Player

The bare essentials every players should have are listed above, but most players agree having a few extras can make the game run really quick.

    Spell Cards

These cards have all the spells available for specific classes or from specific books on really well organized cards that make it easy to set aside your prepared spells and quickly reference all the core details.

Cleric, Arcane, Ranger, Druid, Bard, Paladin, Martial Powers and Races, Xanathars Guide to Everything

    Binders & Sheet Protectors

Keeping everything neat and organized can be a huge time saver and make it much easier for you to find what you need. Binders can be a great way to keep your notes and other materials organized. In addition many sheet protectors easily erase dry erase markers making it easy to keep track of spells and other changes without ruining character sheets with constant erasing.

    As a DM

DMs have their work cut out for them. But a few simple tools can make the game run smooth and leave everyone having that much more fun.

    Index Cards

A set of index cards can go a long way to speeding up the game. Players can put details on spells or magic items on them. You can prepare loot for the game ahead of time and hand it out allowing players to look over the gear as the game continues. You can also use them to hide portions of a battle map or commerical map to give the effect of fog of war.

    Game Mats

A game mat let's you make single maps by drawing on them with dry erase or wet erase markers. Many are made of vinyl and can last a long time. Normally they will have either 1" squares or hex shapes.

    Minitures

These things can be expensive, but giving your game that 3D upgrade and helping players better manage space in a game can be well worth it. You can use actual miniatures (Like those from Reaper), Create custom ones on Hero's Forge, or even just buy some cheap stand in tokens from Game Mash.

If you just need a cheap way to keep track of positions army men, bottle caps, colored game pieces, and even legos can all play the role.

No matter what you use, you can pick up colored rubber bands to mark status conditions or other information.

    Where Can I Play?

You can find tons of places to play D&D.

  • Get together a gaming group.
  • Find a Guild or club in your area. Meetup.com,
  • Most hobby shops and especially comic book and gaming shops offer games, usually Adventure League. WotC offers a tool to find stores here.
  • /r/lfg can be a great way to find others to play online with.
  • Play by Mail sites like RPoL allow you to play by forum post.

    Also:

Critical Role - Voice actors playing DnD, Matt Mercer (The DM) is an amazing Dungeon Master and shows how the game should be played.

Matthew Colville - Amazing videos on being a DM, must watch material for every DM. Even when your opinions differ he gives good reasons and great advice.

    Compendiums

These let you ciew all the free open rules (SRD & Basic Rules) for D&D 5e at no cost.

Roll20 Compendium - Has all the open rules for the game, so a good source for monsters, items, spells, etc.

DnDBeyond - A more official source for the content, plus you can buy all the materials released by WotC to use, and has a great character builder.

    Adventures & Maps

DMsGuild - Tons of free and paid adventures and other materials. The quality can be varying, but many are free and that can be great.

/r/dndmaps/ - What more can they say, D&D Maps.

Mike Schley Makes many of the maps for the D&D Adventures.

If you have some friends that play already, just build a deck for whatever format they play! They'll probably play either standard, (Only recent sets, 2 sets rotate out every 6 months. Check here for whats in it right now) Modern, (Only sets from 8th edition onward. Look at a card from 8th edition then one from 7th, if it look like it's from 8th edition it's probably legal) just Casual/No format, (you can use whatever) or EDH/Commander. (Kinda complicated, ask your friends or look it up)

If you don't have any friends that play, but you can talk one into trying it, grab either two deck builder's toolkits, or a duel deck. Deck builder's toolkits are nifty little things to build a casual deck on your own, but you actually have to build them. Duel decks are preconstructed decks that are usually a decent bit more complicated than the decks you'll build with a deck builder's toolkit, but you don't have to build them. I'd personally go for a toolkit but both are good options.

And if you don't have any friends that'll play with you (or even if you do, this'll help with the rules) download Magic Duels to get the hang of the game. Once you feel you know what you're doing, grab a deck (either by building one from your own ideas, copying a proven one, (saffronolive's decks are generally solid without breaking the bank) or a combination of the two) head down to your Local Game Store, (LGS for short, here's where to find one) play in a Friday Night Magic (FNM) and make some friends!

I'm big into anime, reading/writing/words in general + board games. My lists reflect that somewhat ! I started reading when I was 3-4 thanks to my oldest sister, and many classmates and teachers were surprised or even disbelieving when I entered preschool already able to read. I got called a nerd since elementary but I never took it as an insult, since I really enjoyed reading and I saw it as the reason I was able to do so well in school in the first place (though referred to as a nerd, I actually was never very studious). I was also called a "walking dictionary" during junior high, which I also took as compliment!

Board games is a funny one. I always liked the classics growing up and went out of my way to learn the more "obscure" ones like backgammon and othello, but didn't know about "modern" board games until I started college, where I walked into an "English conversation club" meeting out of curiosity (they used anime characters in their posters...) . Turns out, they played board games as a way to naturally get conversation going. And it seemed to work really well, and I loved it! Though English is my second language I learned it early enough (at around 7 y/o) that I didn't gain much skill from the actual purpose of the club, but I think it definitely helped me develop socially in general, plus it was nice to interact with different international students. I came to love board games because of it and once I ended up coming back home to community college was able to continue the habit by briefly becoming a regular at a board game cafe. I'm busier these days, but have by now gathered my own small collection of board games (':

Pokémon TCG: Sun & Moon Trainer Kit Lycanroc & Alolan Raichu Card Game https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01N6TC9MD/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_3MXZDbZNC8STP

They come with instruction guides, a playmat, all the necessary tokens and two training decks that can be merged into a full deck once you understand the mechanics and get additional decks to play with.

It’s a pretty good starting place for both of your to learn, and the deck(s) are designed to be somewhat simple for beginners.

After you have a good understanding of the game you can get additional 60 card Game Decks, or can five deep into the rabbit hole of buying packs and trying to construct your own decks. For new players I’d suggest Game Decks and a few boosters or even a Trainer Box (8 packs, card sleeves, tokens, additional energy, and a storage box with dividers.)

Varieties of any of these should be easy enough to find on Amazon if you search for the right terms, or can typically be found at any big box store that sells TCGs (Walmart, Target, Best Buy, etc...)

I hope this helps and you get everything you need.

I was curious and checked CSI's posting for the Big Box. It does not seem to list the Filth pack, but it should be in your box - I ordered mine from CSI back in March, and the Filth were included. If, for some strange reason, yours does not contain it, I would contact CSI, because it should definitely be there.

Could just be an oversight on the product page, though.

Edit: Amazon seems to have some copies of the original Master Set in stock for ~$35, which isn't much more than what CSI is asking for, if you're intent on having a complete Summoner Wars collection ASAP.

Cheers and thanks. The Queen of Hearts is included as an extra gaff card (e.g. you could do a colour changing deck routine).

It's hilarious reading some of the negative reviews on Amazon for this deck (link). Lots of buyers didn't realize it's extra card (and that the deck does have a red-backed Queen of Hearts as well), and put in complaints that something was wrong with the deck! I've posted some good examples in another thread on Reddit (here).

I don't know this game you linked to, can you provide me with the link to a twitch stream where I can see the gameplay?

My local game store had a large blind box of 200 mostly commons for pretty cheap. She was wowed by the amount of cards and had fun seeing what was inside. This is just for fun or collecting.

I got her a trainer kit to teach me and her how to play the game. I keep this together like a board game, not mixed with the others:

Snake Oil!

It's a lot like Cards Against Humanity but with a sales pitch. One person is the "customer" (aka they'll have a card that says 'babysitter,' 'engineer,' 'beggar' etc) and everyone else will combine 2 of their cards to make a product. So instead of everyone just laying their cards down and 1 person picking their favorite, everyone pitches their product to the customer! If you play it with the right group, it's fun as hell.

edit: and it's only $15
