Looks like this Pet water fountain

You are SO right about how intelligent this breed is. But they can also be stubborn.. Be diligent with training and stuff for sure. They'll easily get bored so having interesting toys like Kong's that you can stuff worth treats are great. Also invest in some good brushes. No matter what time of year it is he'll be shedding something fierce! They make these grooming tools that look like something medieval but they are amazing for getting up their under coat when they're shedding really bad! Like this one! ... Also: birds love their leftover coat so just leave it out in the yard for them to use for their nests. I did it all the time!

I did also come here just to tell you that your pup is freakin' adorable! Wait until his ears start to perk up... It's hilarious. When mine was still a pup and her ears were still working on standing up they finally did but were so big / heavy they leaned together and she looked like a cone head for weeks... Whenever she ran they would flap together too.. It was hilarious!

I assume by your use of the term "nappy" you are from somewhere outside the US. Would you mind sharing where you can source scented nappy/diaper bags for cheaper?

This hypothesis doesn't quite hold true here in the US. Doggie bags are cheaper here; to the extreme that when my daughter was still in diapers, we kept one of the doggie bag clips with a roll on the diaper bag.

For just a quick example...

Munchkin Arm & Hammer Diaper Bag costs $7.79 US for 72 (0.108 each).

Earth Rated® Lavender-Scented Dog Waste Bags with Handles costs $6.99 US for 120 (0.058 each).

Or if you're okay with unscented, 220 for $7.99, or 0.036 each, or 700 for $14.99, or 0.021 each.

It's a shedding blade for grooming pets.

Here's what I've picked up for christmas gifts so far:

  • Husband: Nintendo Switch, Zelda and Mario; and a microwave popcorn popper with a variety of popcorn kernels
  • Mom: Kate Spade handbag from the surprise sale
  • Dad: Chipolo Classic 4-pack
  • Every parent and stepparent in my husband's family: 23 and me ancestry kits
  • Brother in law: Books (his request)
  • BFF: She requested bright, cute and practical kitchen accessories so I got her this sponge caddy, blue le creuset salt and pepper shakers (acquired locally), these tea bag holders, this cast iron trivet and this spoon rest.
  • Work friends: These are more like gag gifts that make more sense if you know the people-- but I got one guy a blind box from an aquarium-themed cat hat collection and another guy a fidget pen.
  • Dog themed secret santa: This was a pretty high budget exchange that I took part in this year. My recipient has a blind dog so I got her a snuffle mat, a giant bone and I found a company on aliexpress that literally has someone HAND-PAINT whatever image you want onto canvas and mail it to the US for like $20. So I ordered a painting of a modern pop art style greyhound. It hasn't arrived yet though.

Still need to arrange a low budget work group secret santa, pick out some liquor for my boss, a nice candy set or something for some of our support staff downstairs and maybe something more personal for each of my in-laws-- I did find a beautiful painted glass Turkish bowl for my MIL but I'm at a loss for the others.

You might want to invest in an auto-feeder. I used to feed the cat her breakfast at 7 am. She assumed, "When mom wakes up, I get food! Therefore I must wake her as early as possible, for I hunger greatly." I ordered this auto feeder from Amazon & set it to go off at the regular time. It took her a while to realize that I don't HAVE to be awake for food to happen. She still sometimes wakes me up early on weekends just because she's an asshole. But it has helped a lot!

(Also, she figured out how to pry the lid off and gorge on 6 meals. She is not very smart sometimes, but where food is involved she's goddamn Einstein, given enough free time. I had to add velcro straps, which were still not quite sufficient. Eventually I upgraded to a bigger, more secure, more complicated auto-feeder. But if your cat's not a relentless food monster, it should work!)

u/CraniumFornication · 27 pointsr/funny

If you have a pet, that's a moose made by Kong. A very good stuffed animal. Very durable and my Great Dane doesn't want to instantly rip the stuffing out of it.

u/CataclysmicKitten · 26 pointsr/cats

This is the one that I use for my fluffy monster! He used to wake me up at 6 am begging for food, so I quickly bought an automatic feeder and put a stop to that.

I really like this one because you can program it to whatever times you want. I have mine set to go off three times a day so he gets plenty of small portions without throwing a fit about it. it also is pretty durable and Nero hasn't been able to break into it for the food.

u/Cal_From_Cali · 24 pointsr/funny

This is why I bought a bowl that rotates.

http://www.amazon.com/6-Meal-automatic-Message-Recorder-Display/dp/B005POODL8/

So he can be mad that he ate all his food, but in 6 hours while i'm at work, there's the next portion.

Of course, he learned how to rip part of the lid out, so he could get to the food early. And he learned how to steal food from the next bowl over.

So it's only a 4 portion feeder for me, but it works to stop the 2am wakeup call for food.

u/Vio_ · 23 pointsr/funny

You could get a bowl that has a food timer on it. Once it hits the right time, it slides open and feeds the cat when you're not around.

u/rdesktop7 · 22 pointsr/bayarea

You used ~2 bags a day last year? Why?

Dog waste bags are only about $0.02/piece. Not a big deal.

If this is hurting you this much, you can bring your bags of whatever design you like to the grocery store, and you can use the inexpensive bags for your dog waste.

Thanks for picking that shit up btw. Seriously, kudos.

This bag ban was necessary as people waste them like crazy.

Oh Lordy I have a ton...I'll try to categorize them...

Best for Puppies
These are all easy toys that dispense a lot of kibble with very little movement. Perfect for baby puppies or really low-confidence dogs. These can also be upgraded in difficulty later by stuffing them with wet food and freezing, or stuffing with a large, hard to extract treat (like a slice of lunchmeat).

  • PetSafe Busy Buddy Twist 'n Treat...total pain in the ass to fill if you put more than half a cup of food in it, but it's a great "intro to puzzle toys" for a dog that has never had to work for food before. Also very easy to clean.
  • Soda Pup Coffee Cup...representative of a whole genre of "rubber toys with large holes" that make great easy kibble toys or challenging stuff and freeze toys. Some other toys in this genre are the Kong and the West Paw Toppl. I like the Soda Pup ones best because they have higher capacity and a flat bottom.
  • Planet Dog Orbee Tuff Snoop...pretty easy by itself with kibble, can be made more challenging by stuffing a Mazee ball in the large hole.
  • Plastic Milk Jug...or a water bottle, raid your recycling bin. You'll have to supervise to make sure your puppy doesn't shred and eat the jug, but it's a relatively easy and fun (and free) enrichment item. Another puzzle toy you may find in your recycling bin is a cardboard box filled with paper balls. Sprinkle some treats in the box, fill with the balls, and let your dog forage around in your DIY ball pit.

    Easy Rollers
These basically just dispense kibble by rolling. Not particularly complex, but good for the dog that prefers to solve puzzles by brute force.

  • IQ Treat Ball...this toy takes the longest to empty out of all my toys, but it is way too freaking small and loud as hell on my hardwood at 6am. Really easy to fill and clean though, as it comes completely apart.
  • Omega Paw Tricky Treat Ball...a lot quieter but it empties faster and isn't as easy to fill (or clean).
  • Kruuse Buster Cube...this one is also ungodly loud, but it takes a good while to empty despite the fairly consistent payoff per roll. It's a cube (but they also make a spherical one) and the insides have a few baffles to keep kibble from just falling out.

    Wobblers
These require a more finessed rolling motion to empty, so they're the next step up from just batting a toy around.

  • PetSafe Busy Buddy Kibble Nibble...more of a wobbler/roller hybrid. Surprisingly time-consuming for how huge the holes are, and it gets an A+ for filling and cleaning. Unfortunately my GSD knows how to unscrew it, so it's not much of a challenge for him.
  • Starmark Bob-A-Lot...lots of ways to adjust the difficulty on this one, which is nice. I had a foster chew the yellow piece off of mine, but it still works well.
  • Kong Wobbler...pretty standard toy, I actually do not have one of these but I know a lot of people that like them. They're available at big box pet stores which is nice.
  • Nina Ottosson Pyramid...very similar to the Kong Wobbler, but the hole is in a more difficult location. Good toy but the bottom could use more counterweighting for the wobble action.
  • PetSafe Busy Buddy Magic Mushroom...really good wobble action, but for some reason it's common for dogs to try and chuck this one down the stairs and break it. I've heard of a few dogs doing this, including my GSD. I have no idea what about this toy screams "fling me down the stairs!"

    Complex Action Toys
These need movement in more than one direction (or very specific movement) to get kibble out of, which makes them pretty challenging.

  • PetSafe Busy Buddy Tug-a-Jug...this toy is hard to learn but easy to master. Once your dog figures out the mechanism it doesn't last long. Also that rope gets SUPER GROSS.
  • Nina Ottosson Board Games...I don't personally have any of these because my dogs cannot be trusted with small parts, but I've heard people say good things about them.
  • Trixie Mad Scientist...this toy is cool because the dog has to learn to spin the tubes slowly or centripetal acceleration holds the food in. Good exercise in impulse control. I had a DIY one for awhile but my dogs decided to brute force this toy.

    Soothing, Low Energy Toys
Along with the stuff n' freeze toys, these are good for dogs on crate rest or who need some extra help relaxing before bed.

  • Snuffle Mat...great toy for activating a dog's foraging instincts and calming their minds. This is a good DIY project, or you can get extra lazy and chuck a bunch of food into the grass for nature's puzzle toy.
  • HyperPet Lickimat...my cats eat their wet food from the orange kind ("buddy"), and my dogs use the green kind ("soother") with some PB or cheese as a distraction during grooming. You can spread a thin layer of something tasty on them and freeze for a long-lasting treat that promotes the calming behavior of licking.

My dogs (and cats!) eat all their food out of puzzles so I am constantly on the lookout for new challenges! I'd be happy to provide more details on any of the toys I have, or buy and review any toys people have been wondering about :)
EDIT: btw this Jackson Galaxy Asteroid is my favorite cat puzzle toy. They really need to make one for dogs because it is kinda quirky with its bounciness and super quiet.
u/AddChickpeas · 12 pointsr/Showerthoughts

If your dog likes sniffing around and foraging, you should look into a snuffle mat! I have a super smell driven pupper and she loves it. Meal time taking 10-15 minutes is great and exercising her sniff senses definitely chills her out a bit.

That said, if you have the type of dog that will immediately search for the fastest way to get the food, you might need to teach them to use by starting with only 5-10 pieces of kibble. I'm sure my lab growing up would have realized flipping it over is the fastest way to get the food if we just dumped food on it.

u/Boogita · 12 pointsr/reactivedogs

I actually do not think this is the right route here. Your dog is clearly agitated by the interaction, so introducing positive punishment (air horn) is more likely to increase your dog's agitation about oncoming dogs in the future.

Here's what I might try instead:

  • Teach a replacement behavior. The one that comes to mind and might work really well here is a "behind" cue. This is really easy to teach: Say the cue "behind!" and toss a small handful of cookies behind you. With practice, your dog will start associating the word with getting food behind you, making him more likely to get behind you to block oncoming dogs. You might also work on asking your dog for other behaviors (sit, lie down) while your dog is still behind you. Practice this at home and slowly increase distractions.

  • Ask other owners to call/leash their dogs. This is sometimes easier said than done, but IME 85% of the time the other owner is competent enough to understand that there might be some conflict.

  • If the dog approaches and you cannot get your dog behind you: What happens if you drop the leash? I know, I know, this sounds terrifying. But often with my leash-reactive guy who I almost always walk on leash, dropping the leash when a strange dog approaches and all else fails usually results in him being more able to greet the dog in a natural way and decrease any tension and frustration caused by the leash.

  • Finally: I know that sometimes EVERYTHING fails and all goes to shit. I recommend carrying spray shield for those circumstances, just so you can break up a fight if needed. This would be my last resort if everything fails and the dogs are going at it, though.
u/GoliathPrime · 11 pointsr/videos

Body harness. You usually see them for small dogs, but they have them for all sizes - think what you see for sled dogs. You can thread a normal seatbelt through the center portion and if an accident occurs they are supported by the chest straps instead of just their necks.

u/contrarian_barbarian · 10 pointsr/aww

Yep, my dog would do the inhale-barf-repeat cycle with a regular bowl. Got one of these slow feeder bowls, and it's made a night and day difference - not only does she eat slower, but her overall digestion is actually doing better.

u/[deleted] · 9 pointsr/BabyBumps

Just a note on shock collars... if the issue is just barking, try the citronella spray ones first. This is the one my barky asshole poodle has: http://www.amazon.com/PetSafe-Gentle-Spray-Anti-Bark-Collar/dp/B0002D31QU

It really works great. I actually bought a shock collar before I found the spray ones and I tried it out on myself and was like.. nope, I can't use this on a dog. Plus the citronella has the added bonus of deterring bugs! :)

u/farmstinkbuttlass · 9 pointsr/WTF

OPEN LETTER TO EVERYBODY THAT'S MAD ABOUT THE PEPPER SPRAY:
I'm going to plug a product called Sprayshield/DirectStop. It's a citronella spray that has the same effect as a 10% pepper spray with none of the lasting burning and painful effects off pepper spray. Plus it won't make you cry even if it gets in your eyes!

I work at a doggy day care and we have this stuff on us at all times in case a fight breaks out. Every time I've seen it used, all agression stops dead – while sometimes with pepper spray the dog gets even more agressive due to the pain.

u/PuppetMaster · 9 pointsr/DebateAVegan

>that doesn’t mean I’m going to force her to eat a vegan diet and potentially make her even sicker.

I think you are ignorant about dog food, and you seem to be saying that any vegan that feeds their dog vegan food is OK with forcing their dog to be at greater risk. I am ignorant too of lots of things, being vegan takes a lot of time to learn everything. Just the other day I bought probiotics that had milk in them by accident.

This is the one I use am I am confident I am not putting my dog at risk. If you have any evidence I am putting my dog at greater risk I will surely look at this evidence, but I did invest a good deal of time researching this before I switched dog food.

> I’m hesitant to even say I’m vegan these days because of how crazy some are about it.

You can still be an awesome vegan without preaching it or letting people online know you are a vegan. You can still advocate and lead by example in real life and make a great impact to the world. I take the same strategy and identify as plant based online, but people in real life know me as vegan. If a online community is constantly causing you negative emotions & stress you need to dip out of that community imo.

u/CoGa · 8 pointsr/funny

You could always just buy this to help the dog slow down when eating.

u/tokisushi · 8 pointsr/Dogtraining

Stop feeding her out of a bowl.

Try feeding her out of a kong wobbler, IQ ball or similar toy that will FORCE her to slow down. You can also try hand feeding her to help reduce anxiety and keep her eating at a slower pace. They also make special 'bowls' that are meant to help your pup slow down, but I would encourage using a puzzle over these (or at least use them WITH a puzzle toy, 1/3 of the food from this special bow, 1/3 from a puzzle, 1/3 through training/from your hand)

If she is vomiting up her food, she is probably not absorbing all the nutrients she should be.

You can try feeding both dogs together out of your hands (ask for a sit, feed them both some kibble, as for a down, feed them some kibble - you can even make it a game where they compete to be the first one in order to win a kibble prize).

Adding a digestive aid can also help with nutrient absorption which can ultimately help with healthy weight gain. You may also want to consider the quality of the food you are feeding.

She may also need to be fed a little more if you manage to slow her down and she still isn't gaining weight. If she is still throwing up even after you slow her down significantly, you may want to consider an intolerance to an ingredient in the food or see your vet to rule out any health issue.

Personally I'd go with a 4 person unless you have a pressing need to try for smaller.

I recommend having a towel to wipe them down as they come into the tent and I really like having a moving blanket down inside to protect the tent and catch dirt.

Remember to check for ticks daily and have a removal system ready.

u/znics · 7 pointsr/turtle

It’s on amazon, I actually have the same one, it’s called the Turtle Topper

u/engagechad · 7 pointsr/turtle

That is a red eared slider. It is quite possibly the most popular pet turtle species. These turtles are popular because they're prolific and they look like little turtles, unfortunately in a few years that little turtle will have grown exponentially. Most of the time it's a parent who bought the turtle for a kid, kid loses interest, parent doesn't know what to do...

Do not release the turt. It would die in Toronto and even if it did not, environmentally if anyone releases a non indigenous species into the wild, although it sounds harmless enough there are large implications when it comes to OTHER reptile populations. This little turt could mate and create a bunch of other turts that eat up food sources etc...

  1. Keep the turt as best you can
  2. Find a home for the turt via craigslist or a rescue

    1A.

A 10 gallon tank would be a great starter tank for a RES this size. 10 gallon tanks usually run about $10 at petsmart or petco so there is probably a similar cost up there

    1.B

You will need two lights to run during the day:
1 UVB fixture with a bulb

and 1 heat lamp. Some people splurge and purchase heat lamp bulbs specifically made for reptiles, however I have found that using a household bulb provides the same amount of heat. User a bulb that the fixture can handle.

    1C.

The turt will need a basking platform. There are super cool options but simple and efficient is the way to go if you're starting.

    1D.

You will need a filter. Turtles poop a lot more than fish do so when you're shopping for filters always double the GPH needed to account for the extra nitrates.

    1E.

You will need food. Every food is different and let me tell you from experience that you can spend hours researching what is best to feed your turtle...

    Protein:

I have learned that omnivorious turtles such as a red eared slider do well if they are started with a protein rich diet and then transition into adulthood with an omnivorous diet.

I would suggest doing the following: go to the grocery store and buy a small Salmon fillet. It may seem silly, but it will last you a very long time. Keep the Salmon in the freezer and feed the turt a few small strips (a serving size should be thought of as, if the turts head were empty, how much food could you fit in it). Make the strips small enough so that the turtle can swallow it.

Feeding tip: Salmon or any other form of protein such as bloodworms, krill etc... can be quite messy because of the amount of oil in the meat. Many turtle keepers (me included) prefer to feed turtles outside of the tank in order to keep the living tank clean. get a small rubbermaid tub or something, make sure it's clean of course and fill it up with enough water for the turt to float around. feed the turt in that water, when you're done, discard the water and put the fat n happy turt back in the living tank. This method lowers the frequency of water changes and keeps the tank cleaner. Handling the turtle like this to feed is also helpful to make the turtle okay with being handled.

    Calcium:

As you will read, reptiles need calcium in order to stay healthy. Snakes need calcium in the form of rat bones, bearded dragons eat crickets but turtles do best when supplemented with a cuttlebone. There are turtle specific cuttlebones but they're more expensive and the only real different is that they do not have the hard backing that the cuttlebones for birds have. All you have to do to remove the backing is toss it in a saucepan, boil it for a minute or so, let it cool and then that backing can peel off. This also softens up the cuttlebone some. It's not easy to get the backing off in one fell swoop, but turtles don't care if the cuttlebone is in one big piece or if it's in little white chunks. Calcium supplementation is vital for young turts just as the protein is. Once a week or so is good for calcium.

I have rambled. I am passionate about reptiles so I tend to nerd out. Anyway. Please feel free to PM me with questions, I would really love to help in any way.

Yeah it was those treat holes in the ends that were the toy's undoing. They gave my dog the right angle and leverage on the ends, and she ripped it apart in about 20 minutes.

This is the only thing she hasn't been able to get through.

Adding to the snuffle mat suggestions - you can get all sorts of puzzles feeders too. Or for wet food use a Kong - freeze it for extra difficulty!

We use these:

GREEN Interactive Feeder, Large https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B009CKHXYU/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_ih.YCb8E5RS2S

Nina Ottosson Dog Tornado Treat Puzzle Dog Toy by Outward Hound https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B07239T47Y/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_Ih.YCbFX6XDKA

The second looks harder but the first actually takes him long and is easier for us to set up! But we try to use both to change things up.

u/loki93009 · 7 pointsr/Dogtraining

He might need more exercise.

My brother has two malamutes and they get antsy like this when he can't walk them as much (he injured his foot and couldn't for a few weeks luckily his neighbor heard and came and took them for runs)

Malamutes are sweet dogs but they have a LOT of energy.

You might want to see if there is a place where you (or your girlfriend) can take him to pull tires or something. OR there are these backpacks you can get that you can add weight to when you walk him that help.

something like this:
https://smile.amazon.com/OneTigris-Cotton-Camping-Backpack-Rucksack/dp/B00MQGL712/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1485529270&sr=8-1&keywords=weighted+dog+vest

edit:
Just talked to my sister in law about her dogs and apparently her younger one (who is just over one) destroyed their xmas tree and chewed through her laptop cord sooo you aren't the only one with naughty malamutes. (My SIL & Brother has to work more than usual this week so pups are misbehaving.)

We used to do Halo for our dachshund. We switched to Natural Balance dog food about 2 years ago. It says vegetarian, but it's actually vegan. Surprise! It was cheaper (per pound) and more accessible for us than Halo. Between three 12-15 lbs dogs it last about 2.5 months for us.

The vet has never had a problem with our dogs diet and all their blood work comes back great! The dogs love it too.

Don't remove them with tweezers, if you're concerned about doing it the right way. Pinching them with the tweezers could result in the head being left in the skin, which could lead to infection.
Tick keys are the way to go, they're designed specifically to remove the head with the body.

There are a couple things you can try, depending on their level of stubbornness. You can try to stick it out and keep ignoring them, but 6 is pretty early in the morning, and it drove me crazy when my cat did that lol.

As previously suggested, you can put tape or some other deterrent on the door. Aluminum foil is a good choice, or you could get a citrus scent to spray on the door, as most cats don't like that smell. A pheromone spray may also be effective. You can switch up their feeding times so they don't know when to expect food, but that can be difficult especially if you are forgetful or have scheduling conflicts.

The last thing that I tried, and what worked for me, was to buy an automatic feeder. I got this one from amazon for about $40, but you may want a different one since you have multiple cats. It took about a week for my cat to realize that food no longer comes from me, so he doesn't wake me up early in the morning to ask for it anymore. He now sits patiently by the feeder for about an hour prior to it opening and doesn't bother me at all.

I hope this helps!

u/areraswen · 6 pointsr/aww

You're going to see that with every feeder, because sometimes cats are just fucking determined. I got one that has six individual slots that rotate and the lid has an opening just big enough for one compartment. It minimizes the amount that the cat can get into-- you're never going to be able to keep it out of the food entirely, but this minimizes the collateral damage to one compartment instead of just all the food in the machine.

Here's the feeder that I got

If you do get it, make sure you read all the reviews about how to program it, because it's kind of confusing. And of course, most of the reviews say that their cat can get into the initial compartment. But it's better than most of the gravity based ones.

They make these Sonic trainers that will annoy the shit out of them. Or you can spray a citronella blend under the door. Dogs hate citronella. Owner will think there is a new cleaning agent in the hall. x/wtf maybe?

Collar for citronella reference.

so happy to see another vegan doggy!! Let us know how it goes in the long run.

Vegetarian dog food has actually been around for a long time and used by people who aren't even vegans because quite a number of dogs have meat sensitivities

u/the_good_time_mouse · 5 pointsr/vegan

We used Natural Balance until one of our dogs developed an allergy to barley. So, we switched to Nature's Recipe. IMHO, Natural Balance is the better brand.

We also cook up vegetables from the farmer's market (a variety of whatever is in season, around $1 a pound, and not toxic to dogs) boiled with TVP, olive oil. And, sometimes, when we are leaving them with my parents, or it is otherwise inconvenient, we use canned food - from Natural Balance and Nature's Recipe.

Some people may argue with me, but from my discussions vets and vetinary specialists, I wouldn't recommend just kibble alone (vegan or not), for optimum nutrition. The fresh vegetables provide perishable vitamins that your dog won't get elsewhere. Besides, it's ridiculously cheap (>$1lb after the TVP plumps with the cooking water) and very easy to make - I make a two batches every 2-3 weeks, freeze one, and put the pot in the fridge till it's done.

And we also supplement with Taurine and L-Carnitine from http://purebulk.com - important if your food does not contain it.

There's no need to avoid soy, or corn, for that matter. Corn is usually a 'filler' however - it's just empty calories and a sign that the dog food is skimping.

EDIT: Care to explain the downvote?

Dog stairs like this one: http://www.amazon.com/Solvit-PupSTEP-Plus-Pet-Stairs/dp/B000MD57OO (They're good for elderly dogs of any breed, also)

For stumpier-legged dachshund mixes, ramps might be better than stairs.

u/LFNB2613 · 5 pointsr/Dachshund

I bought stairs for my bed for my little guy to get up and down, and even though he still could and preferred to jump I would scold him for doing so. I made him get used to the stairs. Now about seven years later (he’s twelve now) he prefers the stairs and when he does try to jump, which is not often (maybe once-twice a month when he gets the zoomies), he only has about a 50% success rate. Its much safer and much better for their backs. My gf is a vet tech and has seen many doxies come in with back problems from jumping.

I’m really glad I got him stairs. Please don’t let your little wiener be a jumper!

He is super adorable by the way :)

EDIT: he actually has two sets of stairs. He uses this one for going up and this one for going down.

Also, a dog walker would be a great idea! Gives your dog a much needed potty break and some extra exercise. I would think you could find someone for a pretty reasonable price.

u/crackistanian · 5 pointsr/dogs

8 hours is a long time for your dog to hold her urine.
If there is no option of having someone let her out, then, I hate to suggest it, but a pee pad or [grass pee pad] (http://www.amazon.com/Fresh-Patch-Disposable-Potty-Grass/dp/B005G7S6UI) could work. Section off an area with a x-pen enclosing the crate with the pee pad at the opposite end to the crate.

I literally just made a post last night about puzzle toys! I'll go ahead and paste it here:

>I'm just going to start listing off puzzle toys that I like since I don't know which ones you'd used before.Kong toys are excellent ways to stimulate using food. You can also try food puzzles, such as the IQ Ball or Trixie Pet products. Snuff mats can also be helpful, if your dog likes to "forage" for food.
>
>Licking and chewing can also relieve stress. There's a lick mat that I recently found that my pups really love. You can put something like peanut butter or yogurt on it, freeze it, and my dogs go at it for 30 minutes. For chewing, you can look at variety of different things, such a bully sticks, chew toys, Himalayan dog chews, etc. My dogs like all of the above, but the longest lasting chews for them are Benebones.
>
>Search high and low for these types of toys and puzzles. You can often find discounted pet toys at Marshalls or Ross, if you have these types of stores near you. I know they can be kind of expensive, but a good brand will last forever, and for my dogs, they've been great investments!
>
>You can also make your own games, if you'd rather not purchase toys. Hide treats under plastic cups and tell [your dog] to "go find!" You can play hide-and-go-seek around the home. For a DIY toy, put treats in a muffin tin and cover each tin with a tennis ball for him to remove. If he is comfortable with these in the house, you can take these types of games outside, too.

As for helping your dog figure them out, I think you just kind of go with the flow. Show your dog, if he's having trouble, and be patient -- if he's not accustomed to figuring out puzzles, he's going to have to learn. Use the most scrumptious treats to engage and incentivize him.

I know there's research out there that suggests that dogs don't learn well by watching, but my puppy was having trouble with one of those Trixie pet puzzles, at which point I brought in my older dog to show him. He caught on right away.

u/qwicksilfer · 4 pointsr/legaladvice

/u/ZombieJorge, here are some tips to get your dog to stop barking.

My friend's dog would only bark when he was not home, so he bought him a Citronella Bark Collar that basically spritzes some citronella into the air when the dog barks. Dogs don't like the smell so once he started associating barking with citronella, the dog stopped.

u/lzsmith · 4 pointsr/Dogtraining

>Is there something I can spray an attacking dog with, without causing a lot of pain or lasting harm?

There are citronella sprays used to deter roaming dogs (not for training, but for safety). I understand that they don't have the harmful/painful effects of pepper spray, but you still wouldn't want it to go in your dog's face by accident. Spray Shield

In the case of non-aggressive off-leash dogs, you could also consider carrying a bag of tiny high value treats with you (e.g. tiny bits of hot dog). Throw a handful at the face of an approaching dog, the pieces will scatter, and he'll sniff around to find them all. That only works if you have many treats though--toss one or two and he'll just follow you for more.

>The problem is, these unleashed dogs sometimes come out of the blue - around a corner - with no warning.

You can take some practical steps to make your dog less of a target for the roamers.

  • avoid the really bad areas, if possible
  • silence the jingling of your dog's tags and leash using rubber bands. Tags jingling is a trigger for many dogs.
  • walk with your dog at heel or behind you, so you see and intercept threats before she does.

    >I'd love to get your advice and/or recommendations for a trainer.

In terms of training, there are a bunch of things you can do. Working in-person with a trainer is a great option. In searching for a trainer, look for someone with real certifications--professional experience alone doesn't cut it. Before committing to work with the trainer, ask specifically about the trainer's experience with fear-based aggression, leash reactivity, and positive socialization. Stay far away from anyone who offers to "fix" the problem in one visit, or who deals with fear/anxiety-based aggression by correcting the dog. That will only make things worse.

Some of the training options a good trainer might recommend include:

  • BAT (Behavior Adjustment Training) to teach your dog to use calming signals instead of offensive warnings to diffuse tension with other dogs
  • Loose leash walking, so your dog doesn't feel tension on the leash when near other dogs
  • Practice mock-greetings with easygoing, passive decoy dogs, to build confidence
  • Teaching emergency maneuvers like about-turns, sitting behind you, and redirecting attention back to you
  • LAT (look at that), a training tool method that rewards the fearful dog for looking at the scary thing, turning it into a fun game
  • Counterconditioning - changing the way she feels when she sees a dog by associating dogs with enjoyable feelings, pavlov style.
  • Desensitization - gradually exposing her to dogs at a pace she can handle

A lot of those methods, especially BAT and Desensitization, require control over the situation though, and with roaming dogs that's not always possible. Ideally, you could set up mock-situations and practice with those sorts of methods, and use the other methods in real world situations.

In the sidebar, any of the links in the "Fear and/or Aggression" or "Choosing a Trainer" sections might be useful.
u/rin_tin_tin · 4 pointsr/vegan

We feed our pups Nature's Recipe. Mostly because they each eat 8 cups of kibble a day. So it can get very expensive really quick. The v--dog is really awesome (and if I could afford it I would feed it to my pooches) but it is pricey. Natural Balance is another great one.

We boost the kibble with phylum husks, fresh fruit and veg, some vegan sausages, and occasional steamed pumpkin. Their treats are carrots, vegan hot dogs, apples, bananas, and some almond milk yogurt every once in a while.

u/eudaimondaimon · 4 pointsr/vegan

My dog is perfectly healthy (and has been for years) on the vegan dogfood and treats I order online. V-dog is what she eats now and I think it's slightly better than Natural Balance which she was on before.

She actually didn't start off on vegan dog food, but we switched her to it when she started to demonstrate skin allergies to most foods - she'd itch a lot, get bald spots of fur, develop pimple-like sores. But since changing her food her skin and coat have been perfect ever since!

And the vet says she's perfectly healthy (except for a really mild heart murmur which is probably congenital and not because of any food).

u/mt_sage · 4 pointsr/Ultralight

I lean more toward separate tools for each function; knife, tweezers, scissors, tick pick, clippers, pen. If you get UL versions of each, the total weight is about the same as a multi-tool, but each tool works far better than the multi-tool version.
[CountyComm] (https://countycomm.com/) is a good source for some of these tools.

u/Answerii · 4 pointsr/Survival

Awareness is most effective. People are often so much in their heads that they don't notice what's crawling on them. But if you brush or wash a crawling tick off before it bites, that's safest. Once it bites, it releases a chemical that can inhibit your perception of it.

After awareness, self-inspection is important. Lyme disease is not transmitted until the tick has been attached for 24 - 36 hours, so thorough daily inspection should prevent infection.

  • Long pants

  • Long-sleeved shirts

  • Tie-down cuffs

  • Hat

  • Permethrin on cuffs, collar, boot tops (keep Permethrin away from cats; it's very toxic to them)

  • Other repellents can deter ticks, but Permethrin deters and kills them if they contact it

  • Daily self-inspection; you usually have some minutes or hours before a tick attaches and begins to feed (inspection is more effective with a willing companion; use a mirror if you don't have a partner)

  • Carry a tick key or other removal device

  • Learn proper and improper methods of removal, because if the mouth parts are left embedded in the skin they can transmit disease

  • Be attentive and check more frequently in areas known for harboring ticks

  • Use a screened shelter when sitting for long periods: shelter 1 | shelter 2 | shelter 3

If you turn on the exhaust while cooking, and just get one of these it takes care of the problem perfectly. I interact with plenty of non-Indian in the US, and do regularly try out all sorts of cuisines, but I do cook mostly Indian food, just because I feel like it.

I also find Indians who keep apologizing for other Indians a bit silly. We're a country of 1.2 billion, so obviously there's a fair share of idiots. I just don't associate with the crazy ones, but I don't feel I have to apologize for their behaviour.

we do go through a lot of soft toys. my dogs like to "seek the squeak". but I have found if I get large sized soft toys like those made by Go Dog, Tuffies, that my dog cannot easy close their jaws around, they last longer. Also balls from planet dog do well.

Then I get the petstages antler and stick. I don't like the really hard nylabones and stay away from antlers or anything really hard because my one corgi cracked some teeth and had 3 removed.

I also just tried the https://www.amazon.com/Benebone-Bacon-Flavored-Wishbone-Chew/dp/B00CPDWT2M?th=1 for my dog

Haha I know all about rubber toys and the millions pieces you'll have to pick up afterwards. I remember seeing an online list of the best toys for Pits and bought some.

Currently, I have the Benebone Wishbone both Bacon and peanut Butter flavor. I bought this for her about 3 months ago and theyre only halfway destroyed. Definitely worth it.

I also have this Nylabone toy and just like the Benebone, it has lasted the past few months as well. This one is wearing down more, but 3 months is fine with me.

Finally, these Goughnuts toys are great. I bought both the Stick and the Donut, even though my Pit likes the stick more.

And I have a large amount of tennis balls because you can never have enough lol. Hope this list helps!

u/DanielleMUplift · 3 pointsr/dogs

Please do not use a collar for a pulling dog. She will strangle herself every time she pulls and the neck is an extremely sensitive area.

I can only recommend you what I am using with my 110 pounds Rottweiler which is this harness. It of course depends on the dog and I have to add that she is NOT a puller only when other dogs are around and she wants to play with them. But I can guarantee you that a border collie is not a strong dog. If it can hold my Rottweiler, it can definitely hold yours.

u/LastDitchTryForAName · 3 pointsr/gifs

Puzzle toys are great too. Kong Wobbler, The Foobler, and Snuffle Mats are great options. You can make your own snuffle mat pretty easily.

u/Aubi_the_Corgi · 3 pointsr/puppy101

Kongs are the simplest and its really easy to "level up". Start by just putting in dry kibble, then wet kibble, then freeze the wet kibble and seal up the big hole with yogurt or peanut butter. Then you can layer it so its frozen wet kibble, cheese, kibble, yogurt, kibble, peanut butter etc. It'll start taking longer and longer to get everything out. My pup loves the Kong Wobbler too! Not only does it tire him out, but it spreads out his meal so he doesn't eat it as fast. Same with the IQ ball. The puzzle board was great for awhile but then got too easy for him. Snuffle mats are pretty easy to DIY too if you don't want to fork over the money to buy a real one.

u/Kmille17 · 3 pointsr/dogs

This isn't a puzzle toy, but we feed our dog using a snuffle mat. It slows her dinner down from 5 seconds to 5+ minutes, her poops have gotten better, and it has the same kind of energizing/entertaining/mental stimulus factor.

u/sailorboy62 · 3 pointsr/dogs

My dog has issues with strong pulling when overexcited, and I 100% recommend a harness over a neck-collar. The weight is much more evenly distributed, so I find it about 10x easier to control her when she's overexcited. This is the one I got, for reference:

He loves it! He loves having a 'job' to do and gets exited when he sees the bag once we get to the trail. I love it too! Its very sturdy and I just hose it and let it dry in the sun when it's hot. It only comes in one size though and it's the tightest it can be on him and barely fits. It's pretty hefty, but Ethan is a strong dog and can deal with it. It holds a lot of stuff, too. All in all I like it :)

u/KaizerrBlue · 3 pointsr/akita

u/itsmine91 · 3 pointsr/parrots

Also, I think this might be less effective but they definitely hold up. My family has had one for years for our cats and dogs and it doesn't even show rust spots. I also wasn't really thinking about it too hard before, but a grilling brush could also probably be of use.

They make citronella based products, generally referred to as "shield sprays." Definitely not as intense as pepper spry but allegedly gets the job done.

u/aboyne42 · 3 pointsr/dogs

Another method to handle such issues is by carying Spray Shield. It is a citronella based spray that shocks dogs systems long enough for you to gain control of the situation. I carry this as well as another least with me (for strays) on my walks. Luckily I have yet yo be required to use it, but I hear a lot of good things from the rescues I deal with (we foster) and my wife hears good things from her customers (she works at a pet goods store).

u/iBeenie · 3 pointsr/Justrolledintotheshop

There are ways to make a dog let go. Choke it. Also there is such a thing as dog mace. It is usually citronella based and very effective against most dogs (aim for the nose). I've had a lot of experience using it to break up dog fights. Much better than trying to pull them apart.

u/blahblahwordvomit · 3 pointsr/vegetarian

Before you have your dog go vegan/vegetarian check with your vet.

Some dogs, just like some people, will need extra attention after going meat free. Some dogs might also be grain intolerant!

I know natural balance(vet recommended brand) has a vegetarian canned dog food. I've got a chihuahua and she tends to go on hunger strike in the middle of a veg can more than any other variety. Each can usually lasts 4-5 days. Nothing bad happens to her in the short term on the veg food. If anything it's the least hard on her stomach judging from poop quality.

So I mean, you can feed them commercially available dog food that's just as balanced as normal dog food. You might have a dog with grain intolerance which mean these veggie formulas likely won't work out for you, but if you consult with your vet before switching over they can tell you what to look out for.

Edit: Here are some amazon links if you want to read up on this brand or the food.

Been feeding my dog this for 3 years (just as an experiment and if I noticed anything remotely detrimental I would have no problem putting her back on her old food, which was probably just as shitty as most regular dog food is once you find out what's really in it). Just had her yearly vet appointment and the only thing wrong with my yorkie/shih tzu is an eye issue where she can't make her own tears anymore, a very common problem in the breed and not diet-related at all.

Don't overthink it. Hiking/camping is just the art of being outside and not dying - if you're only going on a one or two day trip it's really easy not to die.

You should bring at least 1.5L of water per day of your hike, more when the weather is hot like this.

Use sunscreen, especially if you're on a hike without much tree cover.

Make sure your cellphone is fully charged and have either a paper map or a map that you can access offline.

Bring food.

Tell someone where you're going before you go.

Carry your gear in a backpack or fannypack, not in your hands or a handbag.

Make sure your pack is comfortable before you leave for the trail - you'll be wearing it on your shoulders for hours so make sure the weight is distributed well and that there are no spots which poke you in the back. You probably don't need a special hiking backpack with a frame, you'll be fine with a bookbag. Bonus points if the straps are padded and it has a strap that goes across your breast.

Ignore anyone who tells you to get hiking boots. Just wear a lightweight sneaker that you know you're comfortable wearing all day. If you're going overnight bring along a pair of sandals or something you can wear at camp. Your feet will be swollen at the end of the day so make sure you sit with them elevated for at least a few minutes occasionally.

This is tick country so check yourself for ticks when you stop. They like the warm crevasses of your body - think crotch, armpits, behind your knee, etc. Don't worry about ticks to much because you'll usually have a few hours between when they get on you and when they actually start sucking blood. You can safely remove them using a tick key.

u/Excelius · 3 pointsr/pittsburgh

Get a tick key, they're cheap. You slide it under the attached tick and pop it off.

I got a tick attached to me last week, after a stroll through the park. First time that's ever happened to me, as far as I'm aware.

Caught it about four hours after getting home, used one of those keys to pop if off.

u/fancytalk · 3 pointsr/knitting

So sorry to hear that! I would definitely try to wash it. My cat peed in my husband's car on the way home from the vet and we got the smell out with vinegar and one of these odor absorbers.

u/Eso · 3 pointsr/MechanicAdvice

I deal with water leaks fairly frequently at work. The easiest way to dry it out (after mopping up as much as you can of the water of course) is to run it with the heater on full blast for a few hours at a time. Parking it in a garage with a household dehumidifier running and all the windows down will help as well. Once it's fully dry, clean the mildewy spots as best as you can with a mild soap solution, then run with the heat on full blast for a few hours again to re-dry it. Then buy a couple of air sponges like http://www.amazon.com/Bad-Air-Sponge-Odor-Neutralant/dp/B001SBMLAM and let them sit in their, and use the car normally, and see if you can still smell mildew after a week or two.

Only after that would I start worrying about gutting it to clean it properly. You'd be surprised how well just getting it dry will clean it up.

Vacuum the rugs, sweep the floors often etc. If you have rugs, I suggest sprinkling some baking soda on rugs and letting sit for 15 minutes before vacuuming. Also, this sounds kind of silly, but crack a window here and there to let some fresh air in and the bad air out. I find that a lot of products (chemicals) all mixed together (Febreeze on furniture, air fresheners etc) don't really work. It still smells like dog on top of whatever scent you're using and the scent doesn't seem to last all that long, anyway.

Good luck!

PS... I forgot to mention that I have a pitbull that likes to roll around in the grass and dirt in my backyard.

u/TheDerpingWalrus · 3 pointsr/turtle

This is it. I used to own one before I built a pool in my front yard for my turts. They loved it but were spooked if anyone walked by for a few months. They liked chilling on the platform underneath a lot too.

My tabby is insanely pushy and vocal about getting food, and was really cutting into my slumber/sanity. I know it's possible to train cats to not do that, but good luck with that. The only real solution I know of is auto-feeders. Most of them suck and can easily be broken into by a smart/hungry cat, but there are a few good ones.

If you use dry food, get the Bistro. My girl is diabetic and can only do wet food, so I use the Qpets. Nearly every other feeder is defective in one way or another, but these two are great. Either way, just make sure the feeder itself is secured (I velcro to a wall).

After a while they'll learn that they get fed at precisely X o'clock by the robot, no matter how much they meow at the human, and mostly stop meowing.

u/theycallmeheisenberg · 3 pointsr/Pets

YES definitely this.

my cat was a big old chubber when i got her.... that and i was a pretty busy grad student at the time, i wouldn't always be home to feed her. got a $40 one off amazon that has been working for about 3 years now. the only thing i do is leave her dinner time one empty so that she can get some wet food in her diet but that is it!

I think Kongs are a good start.

I think with young puppies though, depending on their food drive and motivations, they may or may not take to puzzle toys early, so don't feel badly if it's too much for them.

We actually didn't start our dog on puzzle feeders for any "intelligence" benefit - she had super high food drive and kept eating quickly without chewing, vomiting out her meal, then eating her vomit, so we bought a slow feeder bowl which was perfect for her at 4 months old. We fed her out of frozen-solid Kongs in the morning starting when she was 5 months old to help curb her separation anxiety, and then eventually bought a Busy Buddy Kibble Nibble. Even on the easiest settings, she struggled quite a bit as a puppy so we cut down the stoppers to make the flow easier. When she got better at the game, we re-bought the toy and made it substantially more difficult.

My younger dog, a Samoyed, actually doesn't eat out of toys. He has a lesser food drive and while he'll occasionally eat out of a toy, he prefers to just eat his food and work for better snacks (i.e. training for high value treats), so figuring out what your future dog's preferences are is definitely going to be something you'll have to do as your dog grows up. This dog did not eat out of Kongs until he was about 6 months old, either. He's just as smart, just not as insanely food driven as my first dog!

Not exactly weird, but potentially embarrassing, poop bags!!!. I know it's necessary, but it is impossible to look cool while carrying a bag of poop around. Can't be done.

When I was in college, we we pulled a decent April fools prank on my roommate. We were about a month from graduation, and one of my roommates had taken a couple of summer courses at another college that he needed to graduate. Earlier in the day, I had been in the Dean's office, and I stole some letterhead. We typed up a letter from the Dean telling him that his credits from that summer had not successfully transferred and, as such, he would not be graduating in May. We had a friend who worked in the mail room and he put the letter in his mailbox. He came ripping into our suite red in the face, screaming at the top of his lungs about how this was bullshit and he was going to sue the University, and how his parents had donated thousands of dollars to the school and no way could they stop him from graduating. The best part; The contact number we put on the letter was to our female friend's room, and she pretended she was the secretary and totally played along with it. We had to physically restrain him from marching out the door to the dean's office to yell at him. He was PISSED when we told him what we did...but he eventually got over it.

An embarrassing fact about me. I was once ticketed for public urination by a New York City cop on horseback. It was the most terrifying thing that has ever happened to me. If I hadn't just pissed on a dumpster, I definitely would have wet my pants.

Thanks for the contest!

I need three bags a day for my beast. I don't shop in grocery stores, I order all my food through amazon or community supported agriculture programs. I go to the grocery store about once a month for meds. Which don't even come in plastic bags.

I need about ninety bags a month for dog shit, and thirty larger bags a month for cat shit. Even if I grocery shopped, that's 120 bags a month! I buy it all in bulk on Amazon. I don't see how else I could support my household poop problem.

Aww nothing worse than waking up to animal vomit! My puppy, now 2 years old, was such a chewer... chewed through many computer cords, bottom of our dresser, socks and underwear, corner of baseboards, rails under our bed. She did eventually grow out of it, we did exactly what you are planning to do scolded her as we saw it happening and tried keeping everything out of her reach. I also ordered a ton of chew toys until we figured out what she liked -- check out amazon, I found their prices way better than the pet store. My pup loves this one https://www.amazon.com/Benebone-Bacon-Flavored-Wishbone-Chew/dp/B00CPDWT2M/ . She sleeps in our bedroom at night, no crate, and we close the door so she isn't out getting into trouble. Seemed like if she had gotten plenty of play time before bed she slept through the night and didn't chew on our furniture :) Only time we have issues now, which is really rare, is if she is bored and doesn't have a bone to chew on. Good luck!!!!!

u/Prettypinkscarf · 3 pointsr/puppy101

I’m not a dog expert by any means so maybe other people will have some better ideas, but the thing that stands out to me as someone with a dog who literally eats everything - tissues, toys, socks, paper, rocks, sticks, trash, you name it (it’s called Pica) - is you’re taking something that isn’t meant to be eaten (a rope toy, jeans, t-shirt material) and covering it in food, making it appealing to chew or eat. Idk if that will inadvertently train your dog that rope toy = chicken = food, but I will tell you from experience that it is a real pain keeping your dog exercised when he can’t have any toys because he eats them all and when you exercise outside, you’re constantly pulling sticks, pine cones, and trash out of his mouth. You might accidentally give your dog Pica by covering non-food items with food and encouraging her to chew on them.

Like I said, I’m no expert and I don’t know for sure if a chicken broth-soaked toy will actually train your dog to eat her toys, but it’s worth being careful because Pica is dangerous and expensive. =/

My dog loves chewing these flavored bones and they keep him busy for a while. I would recommend finding a flavored bone like that or something similar rather than soaking toys in broth, but that’s just based on my own terrifying experience with Monty almost dying. Make sure you throw away any chews once they’re small enough for your dog to choke on or swallow whole. They can also get stuck in the intestines and cause a blockage.

I had a dog that did that. Basically..Water bottle or try one of the Anti-Bark collars. They make ones that are NOT shock collars. They have a little..canister type thing on them that will spray near the nose when the dog barks. It doesnt hurt them, just takes their attention away cuz they HATE the smell.

I personally.. Didnt do anything. Both of my 2 born after we adopted the dog, got used to it. Not Ideal at all, but I didnt put forth the effort to stop it, so that was my fault lol

This was a Papilion (small dog, similar to Pom or chi).

My Pitbull on the other hand... He NEVER barked until the baby was born.. Ever since then when someone gets close to the house he barks, when other dogs are in sight he barks. He wants to protect her. That bark is MUCH more disruptive than the little dogs was. Even still when he barks it startles everyone.

TL;DR:
anti-bark collar

Try this: Spray Collar

It will spray her every time she barks with citronella. It won't harm her, but it will annoy her. It made my dog quiet within 2 days. Just follow the instructions included with it and you should see a noticeable difference.

u/clickerlogic · 2 pointsr/Dogtraining

To begin with, I would start the relaxation protocol. This protocol will help the pup relax in both good and bad situations. I would also look into picking up the book Controlled Unleashed and practicing LAt (look At That). You should also practice emergency u-turns. You should find a local R+ trainer to help you with the basics.

You need to do everything you can to avoid nasty interactions, every bad interaction will compound on previous interactions. It is our job to protect our dogs. These bad experiences breaks a trust "my human is not going to protect me, so I need to take matters into my own hands". Leash reactivity generally grows from targeting 1 dog, then a type or breed of dogs, eventually evolving to EVERY visible dog within 1/4+ mile.

One option if the other dog is out of control, carry an umbrella to scare off the other dog, just make sure that your dog is OK with the umbrella flapping, you can accomplish this through desensitization and counter conditioning. There is also a product called Spray Shield which is a citronella based product to ward off any unleashed dogs. Most communities have leash laws, I would consider telling the owner of the other dog that I will be calling the police on them if they continue to let their dog off leash. There is a reason communities have leash laws and examples like this are a perfect example of why.

You might want to start carrying Spray Shield. It won't hurt the dog but is supposed to stop them. Maybe carry real pepper spray as a back up, just in case.

Are you walking them in your apartment complex, or in a neighborhood? If it's happening in the complex you can report them to the office or whoever's in charge there.

I recommend using this stuff rather than pepper spray. It's very effective yet painless to the dog, and painless if it blows back in your face. I swear by it.

u/redyouch · 2 pointsr/vegan

I tried feeding my two dogs the Natural Balance Vegan kibble. They both loved it, but the French Bulldog would have terrible diarrhea. Went back to Chicken & Potato flavor and will eventually consider making them a fresh home-made rice-based food in the future. Unfortunately, don't have enough time to do it right now.

This is probably the best review for that food btw:
>Of course we were concerned when our dog told us he wanted to be Vegan. Where would he get his protein? Would he get enough calcium? Would other dogs think he was strange if he was not eating body parts of other animals? Well, we were so pleased to see that he is thriving on this diet. And you know what? Other dogs accept him just fine. And he seems so pleased that he is reducing his carbon footprint and living a life that is consistent with his highest values.

There’s a harness called an “Easywalk” that attaches on the chest. When you pull back on the leash it causes the pupper to sit back and sometimes sit down

u/GrrrrrizzlyBear · 2 pointsr/dogs

Walking with the leash attached to the collar can be harmful. This is an interesting article with a lot of information that explains the potential issue that can arise from using a collar. A dog can receive neck injuries, ear and eye issues, hypothyroidism, malfunctioning in the forelimbs' nervous system, and behavioral problems. It concludes by urging dog owners to buy a harness.

Also note, many think that harnesses make dogs pull more, but this isn't true. The harnesses with an attachment point in the back are what do this because it gives the dog more leverage. If the only times your dog is pulling is when she panics, then using a back attachment point is viable, but you want sturdy harness with a grip then.

If you are interested in some alternatives (based on the information you've given), here are some I'd recommend:

Simple No-Pull Harness - I used one like this at one point. This one is really lightweight and non-obstructive. If you need a harness that doesn't restrict movement at all, this is the one. The attachment point in front is what makes it so the dog doesn't pull.

Gentle Leader - This isn't a harness, and it certainly isn't a muzzle, and it works well. I used to have a Boxer, and I used this for him. It stopped him from pulling, and if he did pull it just brought his attention back to me. Overall, it is useful and performs quite well.

RUFFWEAR Front Range - I use this one now and it is great. This one is fairly simple, it can get dirty if you go through a lot of water, mud, or the like, but mainly performs well. It has attachment points on the front and back, reflective trim, can be hand washed, and has a neat little pocket where you can attach ID tags. Plus it has a good amount of padding that makes it comfortable.

RUFFWEAR Web Master - This is one I have also used and it has done a lot for me, so I may be biased, but is a wonderful harness. I mainly use it for hiking only because there are too many noises in the neighborhood that could spook him (thats's where a front attachment comes in handy) My boy, Odin, doesn't pull much when we hike, so I can get away with the no front attachment point. It has three straps instead of just two, reflective trim, can be hand washed, and has a really sturdy handle, but it doesn't have the little ID pocket like the Front Range (not a big deal though). The handle is what is unique for this, you can use it to lift your dog (especially when hiking) or just hold them still. I also have a nervous dog, and sometimes if he gets spooked I will use this to hold on to him and calm him down.

Honestly, my favorite brand is RUFFWEAR because of their harnesses and all the other gear and toys they have, but Gentle Leaders and that Simple No-Pull are both good options instead of a collar.

u/jourtney · 2 pointsr/Dogtraining

Here is a picture of my girl, just so you know that I am definitely dealing with a very long backed dog. So, I do take some precautions when it comes to her activity. For instance, I walk her about 2-3 hours per day, but I make sure that it's mostly grassy trails and not a lot of cement. When I walk her on cement, we keep the walks short-ish (40-60min). Cement puts more stress on dogs bones/joints, and that includes their backs.

Another thing I do is keep the running around short. I do play fetch with her, and I allow her to run back and forth, and run around the yard.. however.. thankfully she takes breaks on her own. She will run really really fast across the entire yard, and then she will lay down and gnaw on a stick. We give her a minute or so of a break, and then we resume the running. Frequent breaks are important, and we are extra cautious. On top of that, we keep this form of exercise kind of short. We keep her outside running around for about ten minutes before we bring her inside for a nice long break. Then, after about an hour or so, we go back outside to play some more.

I also, of course, train a lot with my dog, so she is always mentally tired. She is a Competition Obedience dog, and a Canine Nosework dog, so we have a lot to work on during the day. I am also a positive reinforcement dog trainer, so I really need to make sure my girl is her best self!

Maybe the little guy would benefit from more freedom, alongside more mental/physical stimulation. If you're able to give him a better life, I think it would be better for you to take him in. Of course, this is totally just my personal opinion, after just one tiny little itty bitty glimpse into your MIL's lifestyle.

I think if your MIL were to carry treats around with her, and keep them on her at all times, she could toss them far away from the couch each time the pup approaches the couch. Whenever she wants him to just go away, she can begin to toss treats all around the room. This will make the floor a rewarding place to hang out. I also recommend she gets a nice comfy dog bed for the dog so he can hang out on the floor comfortably. That's the other thing we did for my girl. We have these exact doggy steps for the bed/couches/chairs/etc. We also have this $90 X-Large pet cave bed for my girl so she has somewhere comfy to lay on the floor. This is definitely important for Dachshund's backs. Here's an album of the X-Large bed.. which is just ridiculously large.. there really is no need to buy the bed this large.. I can comfortably fit inside of it and sleep.

So, I think if your MIL truly needs to stop with the force training, and needs to start using encouragement to get the pup to do what she wants. This will definitely build a better bond between them, and it will help the pup be less defiant!

u/Futurames · 2 pointsr/muacjdiscussion

Yeah it’s tough when they get older. Maybe you could look into getting a set of those mini stairs like these to put next to the bed and at least alleviate one of the problems?

u/Estranged180 · 2 pointsr/Dogtraining

I don't usually advocate the use of pee pads, ever. But this time, I'll concede that they are a necessity. On that score, you're doing it pretty much right, but if you can, get them out a little more often.

For the jumping, if you want them on your couch, get some stairs for the dog. They do make them for smaller, shorter dogs to get up onto furniture. If you don't, you might want to start training them in the 'leave it' command. Once this is in place firmly, you can tell the dog to leave it when it comes to the sofa, and they won't even try.

We just bought this one though we haven't used it yet. It sits on top of the tank, giving the turtle more room to swim. Dimensions are 17" L x 14" W x 10" H

u/Kairus00 · 2 pointsr/Aquariums

As someone who has two turtle tanks sitting next to me, I'll give you some advice. Both those filters are API NEXX models. They're pretty weak canisters. Their rated gph is horrible (companies post rated gphs are low head height and with no media). I run two of these filters on my main turtle tank. My smaller tank runs a smaller version of that, but it's just a growout tank for a baby map.

Water changes are your friend. Turtles are MUCH less sensitive to water quality and quality changes than fish. They don't stress out as much, and when a fish stresses out its immune system weakens a lot, turtles don't really have the same problem.

If you build a basking area to go on top of the tank like I did, or buy a pre-made one like this (AND MODIFY IT TO FIT, look at this video) you can fill the water to the top of the tank. You'll be getting another 15 gallons or so of water in that tank, and that will help dilute the waste. Now instead of having 40ppm of nitrate for example, you'll have 30 or so... This will also make the turtles happier since they now have much more room to swim around in!

LIGHTING. What kind of bulb is in that fixture? If it's not a powersun, then you need to get another fixture and a UVB bulb.

KONG works wonders for me. Half-freeze it and boom! Endless puppy satisfaction. It's really strong and you can put treats in it entice your pup. As fuckmylife112 says, rotate your toys so that your pup won't get bored. I also use those rope toys (tug-of-war toys) because they're also pretty strong. Do note that you need to reward good behavior and use a stern but warm voice when correcting your pup like yelping when he bites you.

If toys don't work, you can use an anti-biting spray. Spray it on the things you don't want get chewed on and once your pup tastes the bad flavor, they are less likely to bite again.

EDIT: If you can't have these things delivered, you can buy those rope toys from the pet store or a supermarket in the pet sections. They're pretty good if you buy those tight and thick ones. Squeaky toys are really good too. Wipe some peanut butter on them if your pup doesn't seem interested and reward good behavior.

I also found ice cubes or iced toys really good too. The coldness soothes the gums and helps your pup.

My dog will disembowel anything with a squeaky in like under 2 min if given the opportunity. He was given a small plush, squeaky rabbit at the family christmas this year by my aunt. They all watched in wonder as it quickly lost its stuffing the squeaker was ripped out like a still-beating heart.

If the eyes are a worry these don't have plastic eyes and the moose has out-lasted even those chew-guard toys for my pup.

I have the same issue with Raider. Check out this

It's the only plush toy that's managed to remain unscathed.

Alternatively (or in addition to a dog-walker): long-term confinement area. This is NOT a crate. You should have a SMALL crate as the pup's "den" or "bed" area. You then place this within the long-term confinement area.

The long-term confinement area is generally an X-PEN that contains the puppy's "bed" (the short-term confinement area; the crate), a water bowl, chew toys, and an area for pottying (preferably something to simulate grass to train the puppy to associate grass with toilet, ie https://www.amazon.com/Fresh-Patch-Disposable-Potty-Grass/dp/B005G7S6UI).

Here is an example:

I don't know about walks, but I do know about indoor potty-training. They sell these things that I think are called puppy pads. It's like a slate of fake grass with a tray underneath (only $20) It's scented like grass and everything, so if your dog is used to going outside, this will be an easier transition than newspaper. And I think the playpen is fair. I know my Shetland sheepdogs never played unless I was around, so I know mine at least would've been satisfied with that amount of space.

u/myparadog · 2 pointsr/AdoptMe

My advice is stay away from the high energy hyper breeds. Mix breeds can be hard to pin point so you would want to get them from a foster situation where someone has spent time with the dog.

Also there are all kinds of options such as Rover or Wag or local dog walker to come let your dog out in the middle of the day.
Security Camera for if you go that route. Also just a good thing to have to check in on your pup during the day.

Amazon also sells these sod boxes that you can train dogs to use just like a cat litter box. Fresh Patch or Synthetic Grass or I’m sure you could build your own. I’ve heard of people buying a small kiddy pool and filling it with dirt or sand for the dog to go in.

It really depends on your budget but it’s totally possible.

u/stormeegedon · 2 pointsr/dogs

Catch him before it even happens. Most dogs give some type of sign that they need to go, whether it be sniffing excessively, wandering away to a quiet area, etc. Try to figure out what signs he gives that he needs to go and once he does start to give those signs, take him outside immediately.

Consider investing in dog grass or something similar. It will be easier on you and your dog to have a potty space available right outside your backdoor.

u/Synaxis · 2 pointsr/dogs

Yeah, unfortunately senior incontinence is one of those things you just have to adapt to. A doggy door is a good idea. If he doesn't seem to improve with trying to re-housetrain him, you can also look into a grass pad, something like this. There are a bunch of them out there, I have no idea what's best, that's just an example of one. it may be more attractive to him than the papery puppy pads.

u/siemunster · 2 pointsr/dogs

[This grass potty pad](http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B005G7S6UI?pc_redir=1397774444&3rd robot_redir=1)

Taking into consideration that he is already trained, this would be the easiest solution since grass is a familiar potty area. If you try regular potty pads or anything of that sort you'll basically be re-training him.

u/essdeekay · 2 pointsr/Pets

I think I have an unbranded version of this one. We bought it direct from the manufacturer on eBay years ago and it doesn't have a logo but I think this one is it.

A bit of pre-planning can help. When I'm out for a few days, I prepare small pots of phoenix worms that my housemate just needs to empty into the bowl once a day. They don't need dusting, so they're super simple. If you can't get anyone to help, maybe get something like this? http://www.amazon.com/Qpets-6-Meal-Automatic-Pet-Feeder/dp/B005POODL8

For longer holidays, you'll need to bathe your beardie and clean out its tank, so maybe get a friend or sitter who knows what they're doing to help for a day or two during your holiday.

u/MooMaddy · 2 pointsr/cats

I have two cats and they stopped ripping up the carpet once we got them a cat tower. They probably weren't as destructive as your cats though.

I had the same problem with one of our cats wanting food really early so I bought this and it seriously changed my life. Now the cat hears the feeder (I programmed it to call his name) and he gets to eat and comes back and sleeps quietly. He usually is a terror when he's hungry: knocking things over, sitting on faces, walking on me when I'm sleeping. I don't rely on the feeder to actually feed them, I still give them a meal of dry food after I get up and some wet food before bed.

u/ladyarwen4820 · 2 pointsr/AmItheAsshole

NTA- I had the same issue with my cat, except he started doing it earlier and earlier on weekdays too! My cat was a food hound, and I felt like more auto feeders would overfeed him, so I got one where I could control the amount of food he got. It worked wonders! I still feed him his dinner every night, so he knows that I still love him.

What do you use to feed her meals? Would something like this slow feeder work for her? I've heard it keeps dogs occupied for a long time, and it's good mental stimulation which can be just as tiring as physical activity.

u/CorgiDad · 2 pointsr/Dogtraining

Try This Bowl, it's worked wonders for my adopted dog, who would wolf her food down so fast she'd sometimes get sick when I first got her. This bowl increased her eating time from about 10 seconds to about 3 minutes. Not a huge amount of time, you might think, but for my other dog (who has always eaten at a "normal" leisurely pace), his eating time increased from about 1 minute to 5-6 mins with the bowl.

u/kororon · 2 pointsr/Dogtraining

I use a gobble stopper. Seems to work in slowing my dog down.

There's also this Northmate green feeder, but I have never used it.

u/kvnryn · 2 pointsr/DobermanPinscher

Slow feeders are an option too. This is the one we have, for example. Increases our dude's feeding time from about 45 seconds (standard bowl) to over 5 minutes.

u/robis726 · 2 pointsr/dogs

Try Benebone. Not exactly cheap, but these bad boys last months and my dogs love them.

u/dieliebelle · 2 pointsr/dogs

My 9 month old puppy loves his benebone (http://www.amazon.com/Benebone-Bacon-Flavored-Wishbone-Chew/dp/B00CPDWT2M/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1411690320&sr=8-1&keywords=benebone). I just got him his third one a few days ago. There's two flavors, bacon and peanut butter (http://www.amazon.com/Benebone-Peanut-Butter-Flavored-Wishbone/dp/B00IK243R6/ref=pd_sbs_petsupplies_2?ie=UTF8&refRID=1WFNGHN8B9FBJXC180JX), but my dog likes his bacon flavored benebone so much that I'm worried that he won't like the peanut butter one, so I haven't purchased that one for him. These last for a pretty long time. When he was a very young puppy, it lasted 3-4 months. His second one lasted 2 months. He used to spend 30 minutes to an hour chewing on it, but this has tapered off slightly.

I've bought him lots of chew toys, like a couple of different nylabones, an elk antler, bully sticks, etc. He chews on his elk antler once in a blue moon. He likes bully sticks, but can finish a 12" one in about 20 minutes, which is way too expensive for me. He never really liked his nylabones, especially the ones that are original flavored. Benebones are a lot like nylabones (they're both made of nylon), but the wishbone shape makes it easy to hold and it smells pretty strongly of bacon, which I think is why my dog likes it so much.

u/Yllibb · 2 pointsr/Random_Acts_Of_Amazon

I have to be honest. In the first picture he looked kinda creepy. In the second one he's super adorable. I am so sorry you lost your poor pet and beloved family member. I'm dreading the day when my Perdy has to go. I dun want her to leave me. Jeez, just thinking about it is making me sad. I'd better stop before I do something silly. Holy crap is that a freaking dinosaur bone?! How much is something like that? My dog might actually take more than an hour to bust through it. She's a rather strong chewer. It's hard to find anything that she'd like that she can't also destroy right away. She loses interest in anything that she can't rip apart fairly quickly.

  • I don't know what she'd do to something like this. Or you can pick anything you want if you'd prefer.

  • I'll hug her extra hard just for you.

  • It's kind of hard to see, as I didn't have the light on when I took this, but the white and brown one is her. The black blob is Duke who came to hang out with her. Doggeh. If you'd like a clearer picture I can post the other picture I have of her as well.

u/lochnessie15 · 2 pointsr/PolishGauntlet

Haha, yep! We know whenever we give her a tennis ball that it's being sacrificed. We have a couple of Kongs, and we've also been really impressed with these bones - it's basically a nylabone, but with a bacon flavor (they have peanut butter, too). Her previous one lasted her about 6 months, and she seems to love it - it's the only toy she'll chew on regularly.

u/v3rtex · 2 pointsr/puppy101

But honestly you can get better packs. This one has some issues with the stitching and tightening of the pack. It works for casual stuff but if you need something for long hikes than you might look for a different pack. If they have one that can double as a harness that's a plus. This one absolutely can not be used to attach a leash/lead. One good tug will rip the stitches

Yeah he is on the smaller size. He weighs 23-25lbs depending on how much he eats that day haha. I also adopted him.
I put kibble sealed with some banana peanut butter mixture in a Kong a freeze it. I also use wet food occasional and freeze it as well. Takes him 15-20 minutes to finish the whole thing.
Look into a snuffle mat. I made my own using strips of fleece and a bar mat but you can also buy one on Etsy or Amazon. https://www.amazon.com/Wooly-Snuffle-Mat-Encourages-Foraging/dp/B01N1FV55I
My dog (surprisingly) does not try and tear or pull the fleece strips. I thought he would to try and get the food faster and because he will tear stuffed animals apart.

u/iamAshlee · 2 pointsr/Dogtraining

Dogs need two types of exercise, physical and mental. Although what you are doing with him does have a lot of mental stimulation it's mostly physical. Spend some time every morning and evening doing some type of training, either a new trick, or reinforcing the things he already knows.

Also get toys that will keep his mind active. I feed my dog with this every evening. You could also try a Snuffle mat.

I've found that most dogs chew because they're either bored or they teething. Keeping them active both physically and mentally will help cut a lot of unwanted chewing. After that just keep consistent and when you find them chewing on something they are not supposed to chew give them something they can.

It's up to us to teach them what is or is not allowed, they eventually catch on, but sometimes it can take a bit.

u/Shir0iKabocha · 2 pointsr/Dogtraining

I don't know how we lived without snuffle mats.

This is the best one you can buy that I'm aware of for meal feeding and regular use. We've had a couple for a long time and machine wash them frequently and they've held up beautifully. I personally wouldn't waste my money on a fleece one.

Yeah I’m not a fan of teaching by discipline. My dogs actually have 3 different leads for walks, because things work for different types of dogs.

I’ve got one on a Gentle Leader. It’s pain free, and easy to use. The only downside was it rubbed the hair off one of my dogs, so we had to switch what he was on.

PetSafe Gentle Leader Head Collar with Training DVD, LARGE 60-130 LBS., BLACK https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00074L4W2/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_ArVJBbSYWZN8K

I’ve got another one on the Holy leader. For some reason he was able to just power through the gentle leader like it wasn’t even on, but the Holt seems to work as intended. Same concept of forcing the dog to turn and look at you if he pulls.

Holt Head Collar Black Size 3 https://www.amazon.com/dp/B005OCXVJG/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_1uVJBbW14C4QP

He third dog, the one who has his hair rubbed off, is on the RabitGoo harness. It has a leash attachment in the front, to prevent pulling, a handle to grab onto if needed, and a back leash attachment. They run a little big, so if he borders between sizes get the smaller one.

I also highly recommend the Primal Pet Gear training leash too. It’s easy on the hands and fits perfectly when my dogs are by my side. My dogs are bigger though, so I’m not sure if that makes a difference.

u/librarychick77 · 2 pointsr/Dogtraining

Front clip harnesses are great, so are rear/back clip harnesses if the dog isn't a puller.

With the senior dog I'd go for a fairly solid back clip harness (like this, or this - if he's got sore joints at all (which is common for the breed) then a front clip harness could be painful as they basically turn the dog if it pulls. The solid harness will give you a good amount of control, and will also feel more comfortable for your new guy.

For your younger fella, a front clip harness and some classes on nice walking on a leash would be a good idea. I walk dogs 3-4 times a week, and I find that the dogs I walk with harnesses learn really quick. I use no corrections, just food and the 300 peck method.

Edit to add: Since you mentioned that she sometimes eats it when scattered on the floor... have you looked into a Snuffle mat? They are basically small fringed rugs that the food "hides" in and they have to sniff it out.

Agree with /u/zelyre about a non-crazy colored saddle bag set. Quickly googled to see general pricing and found this one they might like. That said, I think that reflective stripes would be an add on, so I'd pay comparable pricing for a normal-looking saddle bag but probably not more than $50.

Agree with this. Either a long walk or a good session of fetch with some added training thrown in will tire them out.
And frozen Kongs with canned dog food and treats is wonderful. Get them to lie in their beds, give them the Kongs before you leave.

If it still doesn’t work, you could try calming herbs.

Or a bark collar on your dominant dog.
I used the one that sprays a mist, it leaves a citronella smell. This won’t solve the problem completely but this along with training/ playing and giving them Kongs might.

They make bark collars that will squirt a drop of citric acid citronella at your dog when he barks, I bet it would work for howling.

When i asked my vet about it she said the she recommended the same food to dogs with allergies. As a precaution we got a blood test done twice a year and he's incredibly healthy.

What's ironic is many people feed their dogs garbage brands such Iams which is awful for the dog but still criticize a vegan dog diet. As for cats, I believe taurine is required or they'll die so meat is necessary for them.

Front clipping harnesses are also really good for this sort of thing, especially if your dog is already known to pull on walks. Young dogs especially seem to struggle with spacial awareness and like to tangle you up in the leash so be mindful of that. To make it easier for the dog I think it's best to train them to run on only one side. I picked left since they're already trained to heel on the left side.

The most important thing, and I cannot stress this enough, is not to let the dog's nose get ahead of you by more than about two feet. If the dog is not watching you, there's no way they can see you start to turn or stop and most likely they aren't paying enough attention to hear voice commands either. For turns I use verbal and hand signals so the dog is clear on where I'm going, plus you never know when a passing car might drown out a verbal command. I use "halt" to signal sudden stops because it's rarely heard in normal conversation.

I know it's appealing to let your dog pull you along, but it's very dangerous if your dog isn't 100% attentive to verbal commands outdoors. They can pull both of you into traffic or over obstacles that aren't traversable with skates and that is something I'm not willing to risk personally. If you are always beside your dog and therefor always within their sight, it's a lot easier for them to focus on you.

That's the general concept of what I'm looking for, but there's a ton out there with price points from $20 to a few hundred. I found this one, but I need to get home and see how tall the bed of the car is.

I have this set from amazon and my 2 year old dog figured them out within minutes. My 14 weeks old puppy finally figured out how to get UP them last week, but she won't go down (and we don't want her). I've been working and she will be sleeping and I suddenly hear her barking because she went into the bedroom and is on the bed and can't get down. I give her less then a month before she will go down the steps and another 2 months before she will go down our house stairs.

u/Tigrael · 1 pointr/AskReddit

First of all, has the vet told you that it is this cat's time? Is he in constant pain, is life no longer worth living? There are a few things you can do about him not being able to jump up on things, like getting some pet stairs (like this). Don't put him down until you are sure.

Secondly, "putting him to sleep" by feeding him alcohol is a horrible idea. If you want him to pass on in familiar surroundings, there are vets who will do this in your home. If it is because you cannot afford a vet, contact your local SPCA and see if they have any services to help you.

Third, if you have the cat put to sleep properly by a vet, they will inform you of your options regarding his body afterwards. They can take it away, or you can get him cremated. There may be other options as well.

Fourth, don't do anything differently for Jake. If he seeks out attention more, give it to him, but don't hunt him down for it. Cats grieve in their own way, and making sure everything else in his home is the normal routine will help him adjust to the loss. I think the only thing you really shouldn't do is get a new kitten or cat too soon. Wait until both you and Jake are ready for it.

Finally, you are not more upset than you should be! He's your cat, your pet, your buddy. You probably interact with him much more often than you did with your aunt. Holding it in is just going to come around and bite you in the ass; if you aren't allowed to properly grieve, it will take you longer to come to terms with it. Allow yourself to cry, even if it's in the shower so no one else can see (if showing emotion in front of others is difficult for you).

Once again, it may not yet be his time, and he could have years ahead of him if you give him a few extra things, such as pet stairs or more soft places to sleep down low. Ask your vet. And for god's sake, don't perform the euthanasia yourself.

http://www.tickencounter.org/prevention/how_not_to_remove_a_tick

You can also use tick removal tools. I have one similar to this https://www.amazon.com/Tick-Key-Products-TickKey-Remover/dp/B000R1D3KQ/ref=zg_bs_2975390011_9?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1&refRID=WFQ4S0QVW238A8FFD6K8

But tweezers are just fine too. However, you can't use the tweezers you use to pluck eyebrows. Those are too wide and will crush things. You need tweezers that are really narrow at the tips. These are useful, they have the narrow tips at an angle that is easy to get the ticks with and it has the same tip as the key to slide onto the tick and pull it out like you're pulling out a nail https://www.amazon.com/TickEase-Tick-Remover-Tipped-Tweezers/dp/B00KI1I7BU

I have been a big fan of the tick key. I also have a small set of tweezers on my SAK classic (0.8oz). I could totally see myself doing the same as you though. Panic in the moment and just wanting it off of you.

u/Meph616 · 1 pointr/todayilearned

I'm surprisingly lucky with tick incidents, living by Ithaca NY. I've only ever had 1 (last year actually), on my inner thigh. Thankfully the bastard decided that was a good spot and didn't keep climbing up.

I just got back jogging from a state park and I'm thinking how few fucks I'd give about the next tick if I could just get this vaccine. But since I don't have that I always keep this tick remover in my hiking bag. Haven't had to use it yet, yay. Small investment, all of $8, for simple/effective tick removal.

u/al-smithee · 1 pointr/AskMen

I do costumes for film and our stunt folks have incredible lingering bo in their stunt pads. Usually a 50/50 vinegar water spray works, others prefer vodka or rubbing alcohol, but vinegar is tried and true for me, but these stunties! So we use nature’s miracle on their stuff. Don’t forget your shoes. https://www.amazon.com/Natures-Miracle-Remover-Control-Lavender/dp/B072JGMVLF/ref=sr_1_17?keywords=Natures+miracle&qid=1566850971&s=gateway&sr=8-17

I also can’t recommend the bad air sponge enough. https://www.amazon.com/Bad-Air-Sponge-Absorbing-Neutralant/dp/B001SBMLAM/ref=sr_1_6?crid=JEF9F1X6FYJY&keywords=bad+air+sponge&qid=1566851099&s=gateway&sprefix=Bad+a%2Caps%2C232&sr=8-6 This is the sort of thing our family that does disaster recovery uses.

I’m about to escalate my war on stench against the cats with these new products: Rocco & Roxie Professional Strength Stain & Odor Eliminator - Enzyme-Powered Pet Odor & Stain Remover for Dog and Cats Urine and Angry Orange Pet Odor Eliminator for Dog and Cat Urine, Makes 1 Gallon of Solution for Carpet, Furniture and Floor Stains. I’ve found that febreeze just doesn’t cut it with intense bo, so we don’t use it on set. Sweat and urine have similar compositions and require enzymes to break them down. Fair warning some times it smells worse after you spray it because the moisture reactivates the bacteria, but it really cuts the stench as a laundry additive, but the bad air sponge helps and doesn’t require you to leave your home like an ozone machine does. Good luck!

Seriously man. My past self was a jerk.

One unasked for suggestion: something like the Bad Air Sponge for the things you can't wipe, launder, or toss. It actually absorbs the odor rather than just wafting perfume over it.

I've been asked "What smells amazing?" a handful of times already and it's always my vape. It's quite the mental adjustment.

I use cheap self-starting siphon hose and a 5 gallon bucket. Takes 3 buckets to drain/fill. It's a pain, but not too bad.

I just found this and think I'm going to try it out. Another redditor was telling me my turtles eyes look swollen and I know that I don't have the right size tank for how big he is, so this thing will give him a lot more water room. Of course, that's going to mean a bigger filter, and more work to change the water.

That same redditor commented that algae is usually caused by over lighting and high nitrates in the water (dirty). The topper will take the light away from the water so I hope that will help. Also, I'm going to get see what I can find for a water conditioner to help cut down the nitrate levels.

Having turtles is WORK.

If you had a 55 gallon, this would be simple. The best option is a Turtle Topper, which are made to fit 55g tanks.

There are ways of getting it to work for a 40g tank also if you want to go that route.

I have two lights set up for my male slider as well as the water heater itself. One is a heat lamp and the other is a uvb bulb which is like artificial sunlight to help with colors/shell/digestion. I personally recommend a turtle topper, sliders love to swim so it allows a full tank of water as well as a basking area that you can clamp your lights on.

Yes, gonoughts! It's the ONLY toy my friend's 80lb pit bull can't destroy. They have a lifetime warranty and interestingly the first version we got from Amazon did get chewed up in a couple weeks. After I sent it back the replacement they sent is is INDESTRUCTIBLE. That dog chews on it every day and has hardly made a dent in it after more than a year. I think the original version was some kind of cheaper rubber and they sent me the real thing when they realized I was going to use the warranty.

u/aelizabeth27 · 1 pointr/aww

My Boston Terrier is the same. I wouldn't think that a 16 pound dog could be such a destructive chewer, but toys don't last around here. Stuffies last a matter of minutes (even ones designed to withstand heaving chewing). I spent $30 and bought him the hard yak cheese and a Goughnuts toy (the company will replace the toy for free if your pet destroys it)... he won't touch either. He wants to paint our home with the lifeblood of his vanquished foes.

My parents have this toy for their enormous bulldogs. It's still going strong! Kong toys are amazing though. Winston is such a crazy strong chewer for a teeny 10 pound dog that he needs the black Kongs. Hahaha

Edit: This toy says it's guaranteed to be indestructible :)

Winston lovesssss Kong animals. He would love the moose. I think this puts you right under $10 with shipping. I'm not sure exactly what the normal shipping rate is, so if I go over let me know and I'll choose something else!

I feel ya! My two consider it a personal challenge, it seems, to destroy even the most highly rated chew toy! In the end, I've found investing in a few slightly more expensive ones that are more durable is a little cheaper in the long run.

Have you tried something like this in the house as you work on getting her to the point of going outside? I've never used them/am not recommending a specific brand, but a lot of dogs that have been used to going on grass their whole lives prefer it - maybe if you give her that option while indoors, she'll stop going on your carpet!

u/valevalevalevale · 1 pointr/AskNYC

I believe they sell grass patches specifically designed for pets. Have you checked Amazon? I see several options like this.

u/reddyoulikeabook · 1 pointr/greyhound

I don’t, they don’t absorb enough. Total mess. That said, there is another possible solution. Doesn’t work for my girl, because she loves walks like she loves food (which is saying a lot!), but a friend of mine has a grey and she uses fresh patch. You replace it every 1-2 weeks, I believe. Amazon would deliver https://www.amazon.com/Fresh-Patch-Disposable-Potty-Grass/dp/B005G7S6UI

It works great for her grey, but it just depends on the hound. I hope this helps and best of luck!

P.S. (It didn't fit in the other post!) I've now tried the second feeding device that I got, the Company of Animals Interactive Feeder, and I am very happy with it; Indra seems to be too! I am alternating between feeding him in this and the Kong Wobbler. It definitely slows the process down and he has to work at getting his food, which is apparently the "mental stimulation" thing. :~)

u/c130 · 1 pointr/dogs

Be aware that eating too much, too fast and exercising immediately after eating can potentially cause bloat. My vet recommended no exercise for 1 hour after eating - so I usually feed my pup post-walk.

Sudden changes to his diet can cause tummy upsets and diarrhoea. Not chewing isn't really an issue, just a side effect of how fast he eats.

If it's dry food, bear in mind it swells when damp, so a stomach packed full of dry food can become over-full and he'll puke to relieve pressure - if that sounds possible, you could reduce the portion size and increase number of meals per day so he can't overstuff himself in one sitting.

Check out Green Interactive Feeder - my pup takes around 20 minutes to clear his.

I'd recommend an exercise pen. It's helpful for house training/crate training. Here's the setup we had for our puppy (the wood chips were her potty spot instead of pee pads), and at about 12 weeks we were able to remove the potty spot entirely.

Also:

  • more things to chew on than you think are necessary, ideally with different textures (my puppy likes bully strips, pigs ears, ham bones, and beef knuckles)
  • brush/nail clippers/ear cleaner (depending on the breed)
  • enzymatic cleaner for acidents
  • poop bags (this one comes with the poop bag dispenser too)

I don't have a dog (yet), but my friend purchased this for her dog and she says it's wonderful! I'm not quite sure how it works, since it looks like a hard chew toy but it's bacon flavored, so that must be good, right?

Are you looking for zero treat toys or just "less" treats? Are you giving her an empty Kong?

For treat-less, my pup kinda likes the Benebone. Every couple days he'll play with a ball by himself; he'll throw it in the air, then run to catch it. You can also try split elk antlers too if you consider that treat-less.

My pup used to not like Kongs either until we found the right canned food. Now it'll keep him busy for about 45 minutes. We fill them with stuff like Merricks 96% Beef and freeze it. That way you can use it as a meal too and not worry about over-treating.

Not the one we have, but amazon has a ton of options. You obviously don't want to kill their backs, but a little weight, or lunch if you're going hiking, makes them feel useful. Or that's what I think is going on in their dog brains.

u/traslin · 1 pointr/WildernessBackpacking

I thought about doing this, but the bags I looked at seemed a little gimmicky. I also have no idea how my dog would handle having weight strapped to her during the hike. It is definitely something I'm going to consider in the future, but I don't think I have enough time before this Thursday to make sure it will be worth the hassle.

I'll likely pick one up eventually so I can do some test hikes with my dog before my next trip. Do you have a recommendation for a particular bag? I thought this one looked pretty decent.

u/brilliantbarnacle · 0 pointsr/dogs

You can use a static correction collar or a burst of air (NOT citronella) type of collar. My dog is used to the static stimulation of the static correction collar because I use remote collars with him, so that's the type of collar I used. He already knew the stimulus from the collar means stop what you're doing. Since your dog isn't conditioned this way, I would recommend the air burst collar.

The static collar is a bit uncomfortable at higher levels, it feels like a muscle twitch or static shock from a door handle. The air burst collar has no discomfort at all, it just startles the dog to interrupt the barking.

No matter what kind of collar you get, make sure it is activated by both the sound and vibration of the vocal chords. You don't want it going off for no reason, as that will confuse the dog.

Here is a good collar to start with: http://www.amazon.com/PetSafe-Gentle-Spray-Anti-Bark-Collar/dp/B0002D31QU/ref=zg_bs_2975429011_2

But make sure you use this refill and not the citronella. Citronella burns and lingers. I don't consider that humane. http://www.amazon.com/PetSafe-Unscented-Refill-Control-Trainer/dp/B002NC4FQI

u/webrender · 0 pointsr/dogs

You should try giving one of these collars a shot: http://amzn.com/B0002D31QU

They spray a citrusy mist in the dog's face when they bark. It's unpleasant for the dog, but harmless. I've heard they work well on most dogs; some dogs seem to be unaffected by it though.

<4 cents per bag also better for the environment than plastic sandwhich bag

u/bucketsgirl · -2 pointsr/dogs

You could try keeping a spray bottle within reach of your bed. If she barks in the morning before she is let out of her crate, don't say a word... just give her a squirt. If she barks again, she gets another squirt.

It's not as good as just ignoring, but it's not quite rewarding her with direct attention or verbal acknowledgement from you. I've seen it work well for stopping nuissance behaviors.

Another option is a citronella bark collar. I had to get one for my beagle because he liked to sing the song of his people at inopportune times, it's humane and worked really well. (Example: http://www.amazon.com/PetSafe-Gentle-Spray-Anti-Bark-Collar/dp/B0002D31QU).
