Anything can be used as criminal repellent spray, to be honest. I actually used a travel sized can of aerosol hair spray on a creeper once. (He just would not leave me alone, no matter how often I said I was not interested in conversing with him. So, when he tried to follow me into the bathroom, I pulled out my little can of Suave and sprayed it right in his eyes. It was quite effective.)

Another option is something called a tactical pen. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01MG25VN1/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_5ZhmDbN88QQMP

Then there's the keychain security alarm meant to temporarily disable an assailant by blasting 130 decibels right into their ear. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07GBTRG28/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_f2hmDbY9YGHCV

While a bit heavy, a good old-fashioned heavy duty Maglite will do in a pinch. You whack someone with that, they're gonna feel it. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B000IXAJVY/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_P5hmDb9XTT27M

I like flashlights. Carrying a big "fuck you" Maglite is impractical for me, I prefer my more reasonably sized Streamlight Polytac. Aluminum flashlights would perform even better as an impact device.

Flashlights in general are good for at least three reasons. First: light is a weapon. 100-200 lumens or more, flashed into the eyes of an assailant at night, is going to be a welcome advantage. Two: flashlights made by reputable companies (Streamlight, Surefire, and many others) are very, very good kubotan substitutes. They have weight and are resilient, a good striking tool. Three: it's a damn flashlight. Anyone who objects to a flashlight on your person can be made to understand the myriad uses for such an object in short order.

This is referred to as the "knockout game" at a national level but apparently specifically in Champaign the people who refer to it call it "polar bear hunting". (1) Here's a post about it in Champaign specifically. (2) Here is an article.

And let's be fucking real here. This is categorically black-on-white crime. Even the term "polar bear" is what the blacks use to refer to their white targets. This is a race crime perpetuated by black people against white people.

A few tips on not becoming the victim of one of these events:

  1. Stay alert and aware of your surroundings. You should always be aware of your surroundings. Even if it is 2pm and you are walking to class. I recommend not wearing headphones and avoiding talking to the phone. This is even more true when it is well past midnight and you are walking alone.

  2. Avoid walking late at night period. If you do have to walk late at night, avoid doing it alone.

  3. Carry tools to protect yourself:

  • If you regularly do walk alone at night, you should carry a bright flashlight which you can use to light up dark areas as well as discourage or even temporarily blind an assailant.
  • Carry pepper spray, which can be used to spray a would-be assailant in the face to disable them and give you time to escape.
  • Finally, you can spend the time to get a firearm owner's card and concealed carry license. In some situations a handgun can be the difference between you getting viciously beaten and getting your shit stolen, and you walking away from a situation unharmed (particularly in situations where you are outnumbered). You cannot carry a gun on university-owned property but if you spend most of your time west of Wright St. in the evenings and on weekends, you can carry freely almost everywhere there.

Remember, the bottom line is that this type of attack is extremely dangerous. Hitting your head on pavement like the guy in the video above can result in brain injury or death. And obviously this does happen right in the middle of campus. Take steps to avoid becoming a victim of what the bottom dwellers of society engage in to amuse themselves.

I have this one

But my Dads got this one and it's way more powerful.

I can still use mine to spot them from my porch. They glow like crazy, jst have all your other lights off. It's like looking for the less-bright stars.

u/Zak · 13 pointsr/flashlight

You've correctly identified it as junk. Good.

If you really want a zoomie, check out the Wowtac A3S, but we tend to recommend fixed-focus lights for most applications. They're more durable, more waterproof, and have more efficient optics. The duty lights section of the arbitrary list of popular lights has some options that may work well for security work.

u/Virisenox_ · 13 pointsr/flashlight

Wowtac A3S. We don't usually recommend zoomies, but there are a few situations where they make sense due to their lack of spill. This is one of those situations.

u/BrokenRecordBot · 13 pointsr/flashlight

Hello flashlight seeker! You may find our arbitrary list of popular lights to be a useful starting point.

For more personalized recommendations, check out this guide for posting some extra info about your needs/wants.

Otherwise, the community suggested budget starter light is the Convoy S2+ with 4000K and 7136x6 drivers.

For a non-18650 light, the AA ThruNite T10 II or Lumintop Tool, and AAA Lumintop IYP365 or Sofirn C01S are all good choices.

I AM A BOT. DOWNVOTE TO REMOVE.

u/Mrmagroin · 13 pointsr/flashlight

I really need to change my lurking ways! Gotta get 50 more karma by Wednesday to qualify! But since I’ve been lurking I’ve got a Surefire and a ThruNite. Really looking to try a Sofrin.

This Sofirn SP33 looks right up my alley!

u/AttemptedWit · 12 pointsr/flashlight

$10 is a tough budget.

Coast HP1 was my first foray into the hobby. It has a horrid tint (maybe be good if you are attacked by a tint snob). It's zoomie, but a more efficient zoom. It supports 14500 so it can get pretty bright for the price. It is single mode with momentary. It's not bad for the price.

Lumintop Tool Nichia is currently on sale at gearbest for $11. I can't comment on it too much since I just ordered it last night, but from what I've read, it's a solid little light.

Nitecore Tube is a solid little keychain light in your budget.

All three lights are superior at least on par to your S***HK.

If you are willing to go to $20, the Atactical A1 is probably one of the best bang for buck all in one lights around righnow.

u/BigStickOSalami · 12 pointsr/EDC

I know this will get buried but I have decided to revamp my whole EDC.

/u/ieatedjesus I have taken the plunge on the Wallet you have recomended. I hate when a product has no reviews or I can't do research about it but whatever. I'm also super stingy with money so this is a huge deal for me lol ($42 with engraving)

As for the pen, I have decided to get a Fisher Space Pen $15. I have 3. Now I will have 4. (also bought a clip $5) ((also bought fieldnotes $10 for the wallet))

/u/odomandr I have decided to go with that knife $16. Nothing sexier than a good stone wash and minimalist design. I also need a knife. No idea about the quality but today I have decided to trust a total stranger on /r/EDC

/u/Ryl4nd99 Thank you for the great idea of a post! I hope to post again when everything comes in. I decided to add/replace my edc with the items above. I also carry a muthafuckin Casio as well as an Olight s2 Baton along with dollar store chapstick. Hopefully I can keep you updated or make a new post when all my goodies come in!

Sorry for the wall of text. Thank you for reading.

u/mpak87 · 11 pointsr/flashlight

You are basically in for the entire forum to show up and try to talk you out of the zoom lens. They really don't get much in the way of love around here. Most of the lights you'll see recommended (and the A6 in particular, which is a really incredible light) have a balanced mixture of flood and throw. There is a central hot spot that throws a significant distance, surrounded by a spill of light that neatly floods out, it basically encompasses the whole range of zoom. If you need a dedicated thrower, get one of those, or a dedicated flooder, get one of those. A zoomie basically tries to do both, and sucks at everything. Additionally, there really isn't a good way to waterproof one, so they tend to be far less robust than most of the other lights on the market, as well as being far less efficient in the amount of light that they actually put out. The BLF A6 would be a great option, as would a Wowtac A1s, which comes with a battery so it's ready to go. Spending a bit more a Thrunite Neutron 2C is another great choice.

If you absolutely, positively, no buts about it think that all of these nerds who spend an utterly absurd amount of time on the subject of flashlights couldn't possibly be right, and you, come hell or high water, are going to be ordering a zoomie no matter what we tell you, the Wowtac A3s sucks considerably less than the one you have.

u/baggist · 10 pointsr/BuyItForLife

Maglite is the traditional choice. They make all sizes.

u/USS_Aayhan · 10 pointsr/guns

Don't go cheaper than a TLR-3.

Anything else will fail you when you need it most.

Just get it here then.

IMO, 1AAA lights are the best option for EDC. Ranging anywhere from like 50-150 lumens, and both small and light. The Olight I3E is a great option, or the ITP EOS A3 which seems to be the basis of the Maratac AAA, my favorite little EDC light.

u/bmengineer · 9 pointsr/flashlight

Welcome to our sub! The first problem is wanting a light with variable focus. There won't be one that meets your requirements. A quick search on parametrek.com shows that all of the options with 1000 lumens and adjustable focus are much too large to fit in a pocket. That isn't surprising - zoomable lights tend to be much bulkier and heavier than standard lights. The one exception is the Fenix FD30, which goes for about $80.

I'd suggest instead trying a simple 1x18650 tube light. In my experience, changing brightness modes can get help you see about as far as zooming in would, and you don't get any added weight.

  • The Armytek Prime C2 is on sale for $55 right now. This is a popular EDC option that comes with a battery, built in charging, and has a magnetic tail-cap which I think is handy as all hell.

  • Wowtac A1S comes with a light and a battery with built in charging and can be ordered off Amazon for $30.

  • Wowtac A3S for $30 you get a zoom light and a cell that can do about 1000 lumens, like you wanted, but you can see the added bulk this has.

Woops, I linked the neutral tints of the A1S and C2 - cool options are also available for both of those. Sorry.

No one sane puts out anything that demands the trigger do anything other than actuate the firing mechanism. Some insane people have tried to hook flashlights and lasers to the trigger, and were rightfully ripped a new one for attempting to do so.

What you're looking for instead are lights activated by either pressure pads you attach to your rails or foregrip, or a toggle switch cap attached to the back and within reach of your pistol grip.

Lumintop Tool AA?

  1. Check - 550 lumens (ish. Theres a 219C version, too.)
  2. Sort of - 11.5mm protrudes with the magnetic tail on (but that makes it a twisty), 24.5mm with the clicky tail.
  3. Check - if you swap tails

  5. Check - $18 on Amazon

u/QuietPewPew · 6 pointsr/guns

From personal experience, buy once, cry once.

If you can't save $30 in another month, then maybe reconsider where you allocate your money. I don't want you to think I'm being condescending. I'm just speaking from my own experience.

Not sure how compact you meant, but $80 for a TLR-3 is what I would suggest

u/bkelley · 6 pointsr/EDC

It gets the job done. Not the brightest but it's size is really nice. Fits perfect next to my pen in the utility pocket of my work pants. I use it for checking pupils and stuff so I didn't want anything too bright. But I am looking for something more powerful, maybe with multiple power settings. Was checking this out Coast HP1 and it looks pretty solid but doesn't have multiple settings.

u/TheTopSnek · 6 pointsr/mildlyinteresting

It's really small, so yeah.

It's literally smaller than my palm, so it's hardly annoying to take it along.

For a replacement to that Maglight, even something like the Streamlight Microstream would be an improvement. A Nitecore tube would be a decent replacement as well, with the added ability to throw it on your keys instead of putting it in your pocket.

If you want to really improve your abilities, something like the Olight S1 Baton with rechargeable Rcr123a batteries or a S10R bundle would be smaller than that maglight and a TON brighter. Of course there is also the S20 Baton that runs 18650 batteries, but it's thicker than, but maybe not as long, as the maglight you've pictured.

Those last options are a bit pricey to start with, but are worth it, and will save some money in batteries over time, if you're running disposable AA in your current setup.

u/yossxp · 6 pointsr/flashlight

I recently picked a Lumintop Tool AA 2.0 for many of reasons you describe here.

Looked for something small and light enough that can be attached to a baseball cap, yet, bright enough to be used for camping, night hikes, around the house and on the bedside stand.

It turned out as a great little light for my needs, very bright with Eneloop batteries and can be used with 14500 and Alkaline, which are available everywhere in case I run out of spare power.

Tail switch operation with very simple and easy UI, mode memory, hidden strobe, reversible clip that can be attached to a cap, and a silicone diffuser which makes it great for lighting up a tent or an 'in the wild' dinner setup.

As for the weight, it's actually lighter than the AA Eneloop battery that is used to power it.

u/Photoloss · 5 pointsr/cataclysmdda

> The problem isn't the jtr, it's the flashlight that draws power like mad, and similar ones.

The flashlight CBM is in the reasonable range. 1 kJ every 25 turns equals 6.7W in-game. This Maglite advertises 80h runtime on 3 D batteries which works out to about 1W while this high-power "tactical" flashlight thankfully spells out its power consumption explicitly for once and guzzles 11.2W. Both use LEDs so an order-of-magnitude reduction is implausible.

And yes this is a repost of what I edited into the other reply. The tools seem a little less sensible since the regular flashlight is roughly on par with the CBM while the heavy one drains over 18W.

I got the TLR-1s off Amazon for $100, looks like it's still on sale (50% off). So far I love it, have yet to shoot with it though.

u/cthulhubert · 5 pointsr/EDC

The core material EDC, to me would be knife, light and cellphone. But cool keychain gidgets are really nice too.

So I'd say if you have a knife, a good flashlight would be next, then a backup knife and light (one is none, two is one). I like a multi-tool or SAK for my backup knife, and a keychain light for my backup torch.

(In case you're curious, after that I start considering footwear, gloves, hats and other clothing.)

(Sorry, I'm feeling a bit lazy, so you'll have to live with bare links.)

This one is pretty popular for keychain use: www.amazon.com/iTP-A3-EOS-Flashlight--Upgrade/dp/B006K5C2EG/

Fenix has single AA and 123 powered lights that are well regarded and compact:
AA: http://www.amazon.com/Fenix-E11-Compact-Lumen-Flashlight/dp/B005GW8UC2
CR123: www.amazon.com/Fenix-Compact-140-Lumen-Flashlight/dp/B005CWRB44

There are a lot of other brands worthy of consideration too, of course (Fourseven's mini, Jetbeam, Klarus, Zebra, just to name a few).

There are also a lot of much larger but more capable flashlights out there.

Keychain stuff is always nice:
I use these sliver grippers way more than I thought I would. The convenience of always having them around is unparalleled: http://www.amazon.com/UNCLE-BILLS-SLIVER-GRIPPER-TWEEZER/dp/B001KMSUA4
I've been thinking of getting this, I'm a little leery about that much stuff for so little cost though: www.amazon.com/gp/product/B003A5E5IK
I love this style of keyring, but it's way cheaper on eBay: http://www.amazon.com/Vigilant-Gear-Aircraft-Cable-Ring/dp/B006ZSP1PA
Little one-piece keychain tools have become really popular, and I really like having a little prying and screwing tool always present.
The Gerber Shard is cheap but probably at least worth what you pay for it: http://www.amazon.com/Gerber-22-01769-Shard-Keychain-Tool/dp/B002ZK45IQ
This one has a bit more functionality, and is made of the magically delicious titanium: http://www.amazon.com/Schrade-Chain-Tool-Seatbelt-Cutter/dp/B004PQJ1QO

Keychain multi-tools can be good.
Here's one from Gerber: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B006M9NIDO
Supposedly the build quality isn't as good as Leatherman's though: http://www.amazon.com/Leatherman-64010101K-Micra-Multi-tool/dp/B000JCN0FG

I'd also recommend looking for a glow in the dark lanyard.

A pen you can EDC is another "you're surprised how often you use it" item. I have an Inka and it's definitely alright, though a bit fiddly: http://www.amazon.com/Nite-Ize-Inc-Inka-Pen/dp/B001E6R6EM/
The biggest competitor is the classic Fisher Bullet Space Pen: http://www.amazon.com/Fisher-Space-Pen-Bullet-400B/dp/B000WGD13U

Something to write on is nice. I'm a real child of the digital age, but I still like having an analog recording medium on me. I prefer Pentalic's pocket size books to Moleskine's. They're a little thicker, but they have a flexible cover, and are usually cheaper. Here's one: http://www.amazon.com/Pentalic-Travelers-Sketch-3-Inch-4-Inch/dp/B0025TZ35Q but I don't know if it's ruled or grid or what. I also prefer a bright color cover to make it easy to spot.

Continuing on the writing stuff matter, a sharpie and/or a metallic (ink) sharpie are nice to have. You can get sharpies with stainless steel cases too, which feel nicer to hold, and you're a little less likely to forget somewhere.
Black (dozen): http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00006IFEP
Stainless Steel: http://www.amazon.com/Sharpie-Stainless-Permanent-Marker-1747388/dp/B001V9LQLG
Metallic: http://www.amazon.com/Sanford-39108PP-Metallic-Sharpie-Permanent/dp/B00119QWCO

I think everybody should carry some sort of bandanna. I carry an off-brand buff (tubular bandanna) and an olive drab shemagh.

I like to carry a small baggie of what I call MacGuyver goods. Paracord (bound up in a hanayawa right now), some gorilla tape and electrical tape wrapped around a card, super glue, a sewing kit, zip ties, twist ties, rubber bands, safety pins, binder clips, and a few 1 quart ziplock freezer bags. (Like hell I'm finding links for all of those.)

Yet another "surprising how useful it turns out to be" item is a small mirror: http://www.amazon.com/Coghlans-Featherweight-Mirror/dp/B0047QV44O/

Whistles are useful for warning people of fire or danger, or calling for help, so I like to carry one: http://www.amazon.com/Fox-40-Whistle-Breakaway-Lanyard/dp/B00544UJC6

A monocular is fun to have on your person. This particular model is really great because of its super low minimum focusing distance, which lets you use it as a sort of loupe. In regular mode it's good for looking for house numbers or your car in a parking lot, that sort of thing: http://www.amazon.com/Brunton-Echo-7x18-Pocket-Scope/dp/B000FKMTBS

I think that's all I could come up with off the top of my head.

u/Geodyssey · 5 pointsr/flashlight

There's nothing wrong with the Preon 2. It will serve you well. As a matter of personal preference, I don't like to carry 2 x AAA lights on my person. I prefer a single AAA light.

As for single AAA lights, the Preon 1, the ITP A3 EOS, the Fenix LD01, and the Peak Eiger are all favorites. All of the lights mentioned can accept a 10440 lithium ion cell for maximum output (much higher than the advertised and higher than your Preon 2) or other low voltage cells (lithium, alkaline, NiMH etc...).

I personally carry a Peak Eiger every day of my life. It's so small and light it disappears in my pocket but it puts out plenty of light. The version I use has the QTC pill which gives it infinite variability from very low to vary high. Peaks also have fully potted electronics for added durability and water proofness.

I've also had the LD01 and the ITP in the past and had no problems with either.

Cheers!

I used to be a fan before I discovered this sub. A Coast G50 ran in my pocket for some time before being replaced with another Coast (this one was some el-cheapo with four 5mm LEDs and two of some other flavor... Fit better in the pocket but it was crazy dim and had a hideous beam pattern.)

They're fine. The Coast HP1 can take a 14500 Li-Ion cell as well as alkaline or Ni-MH options which is pretty neat, and for $8 its a pretty good light. Their inspection lights (penlights) are also pretty unique because their optics cast a completely flat circle of light with no spill.

They are absolutely lacking in LED tech though - I don't know who makes their emitters, but they are pretty pathetic. Their rechargeable options are also insanely expensive and use proprietary batteries, which is a big no-no on this sub.

Overall if you've got one and you like it - great! Nothing wrong with that at all, we all have our preferences. That said, if you are starting out, there are options that completely blow them out of the water for cheaper.

What do you like about their stuff?

There are quite a few other flashlight in the Black Friday Deal, including Wowtac and Lumintop. May need to be a prime member to get these saving.

A few examples:

Lumintop Tool AA v2 – https://www.amazon.com/LUMINTOP-AA-2-0-Flashlight-Pocket-sized/dp/B07BLT...

You can just do a search on these manufacture names, and in the resulting product list, all that are included in the Black Friday Deal will have that label and how much the savings are.

If $50 is a hard line, Sofirn SP33 is 2500 lumens and more than most uses require. It comes with a 26650 and charger for $41.

As others have stated, Sofirn SP36 BLF edition with Anduril is probably the best option in that range. You can get the light with stock Sofirn branded batteries for $70 or get it without for $50.

If you want slightly better than the stock Sofirn batteries, you can get 3 of the popular and budget friendly high drain 18650's like the Samsung 30q for $16.50 + shipping.

On the other side of this, it is nice to have a soda to sip on. At some point during the day you'll feel worn out and tired. When I'm driving all day I usually take about 2 hours and drink a Mountain Dew, sip by sip. For me, this is generally around 2-3pm. Especially if I'm driving into a congested area, it helps me be a little more alert. You don't want to drink too much of anything because then you have to stop to pee.

On that note, my big rule is that if we're stopping, I'm peeing. No matter how much comes out. Such a time killer to get off the highway only for me to pee.

Also, bring a large maglite with extra D-cell batteries. You never know when you'll need light and it doubles as a self-defense weapon.

Learn how to check fluids on your car. I always bring extra coolant, oil, and ATF on long trips. If I do have to add some I don't want to use the overpriced shit at the truck stop. Do you know how to change a tire? Make sure to air up the spare tire before leaving, along with all of your other tires.

Keep a cooler and stop at grocery stores. Most highway food is absolute shit; sandwiches, cheese and crackers, etc. go a long way for sustenance. We usually plan to stop for one real meal per driving day.

One more thought...be careful with the coffee in the morning. If you're anything like me, it means there is a stop absolutely necessary about 2-3 hours later. Plan for that...

I love long drives, especially with my GF. We can spend 2-3 hours at a time just flowing through a conversation. Things to do are easy, conversation will come, games will come about, whatever. In my eyes, the important thing is to be prepared for as many situations as possible.

Streamlight TLR-3 will sit almost flush with the muzzle, and puts off a good deal of light. $75 on amazon.

u/netchemica · 4 pointsr/ar15

The Streamlight TLR-1 is the cheapest light I'd put on a weapon. Keep in mind, the TLR-1s are very durable and reliable, don't let their low price fool you into thinking that they're low quality lights.

Here it is for a hair over $100 from Amazon so you can take advantage of Prime shipping.

Another option to look at is the Insight M3.

Depending on your mom, and your assessment of if she will actually take the batteries out for storage, you might want to buy the disposable lithium ones. Or if you think she would do it, some enloops or other nimh with a simple charger.

We recently had a pet disaster situation - the litter box got blocked one night, and the cats peed elsewhere. I cleaned up everything I could find, but the smell just wouldn’t go away, no matter how much I aired out the room. Several weeks later, I realized it was the couch - it had been soaked in pee. I had to get rid of the entire thing to get the smell to go away.

A cheap UV flashlight like this one, shined all around the room that smells (at night), can help you locate the source of the smell. It will make any pee spots/puke spots light up so you can find them and clean them. If the cats have peed a large amount on anything that’s fabric (clothing/rug/furniture), your best bet may simply be to get rid of it. Even the most thorough cleaning won’t completely get rid of the smell; if the cats can still smell any of it, they’re likely to continue marking the same spot, because now it smells like a litter box with them.

I agree with the other commenters about the importance of changing the litter box frequently (and that the usual rule for how many litter boxes you should have available is number of cats + one). But to keep them from continuing to mark whatever it is that’s currently carrying the stink (my guess is carpet, couch, or pile of clothes), you’ve got to find it and get it out of the house.

For a ridiculously expensive quick fix, they make automatic, self-cleaning litter boxes. They cost several hundred dollars (although occasionally they can be found for about a hundred on fb marketplace, and they do offer financing for about $40 a month), so seriously - very expensive. But it cleans itself, every single time your cat uses it. Cat goes, it waits on a timer, and then it sifts the litter and the clumped waste goes into a regular kitchen trash bag in the drawer underneath the unit. Every so often (with four cats, it would probably be every other day), you take out the trash bag full of waste, toss it, and put in a new bag. When you do, you add a couple cups of litter. It only needs a deep clean (emptying the litter and wiping down the inside of the globe) maybe once a month. Again, super expensive - but it’s a quick fix solution that would scoop the litter box thirty-five times a day, if your cats go thirty-five times that day. Depending on how much you’re planning to spend on the safe outdoor space for the cats (I’m assuming you mean some type of catio or fenced porch?), it could end up costing about the same thing.

Hold onto your pride in the progress you’ve made. Your mom may not see how big of a difference you’ve made, but you know what it looked like before and what it looks like now. Keep going in the right direction.

u/BonesOfWhales · 4 pointsr/discgolf

Use a blacklight.

u/MauiKehaulani · 4 pointsr/self

If you observe where they’re running to and from that’s where you’d have the best luck with traps. You can also use a UV light to spot their urine trail and place the traps directly on that trail. Rodents are creatures of habit and, like ants, follow a certain and specific pathway.

I’ve used glue traps and bait them with peanut butter or dried shrimp(I realize many people don’t have dried shrimp so anything pungent smelling will do) and it’s worked pretty well.

Edit: The UV flashlight thing I’m speaking of I got from a hardware store in their pest control area for $10. It’s similar to this one

Wisconsin law seems to define concealed weapons to include guns, electric weapons, or billy clubs (batons are these). If they are concealed, you need a license to carry.

http://www.my-self-defense.com/wisconsin-expandable-baton-laws.html

Minnesota prohibits the unlawful use of dangerous weapons. Guns are automatically considered dangerous weapons. Collapsible batons fall under the category of billy clubs, blackjacks, or bludgeons, so they may be considered dangerous weapons.

https://www.revisor.mn.gov/statutes/?id=609.66

Frankly, I don't think a baton is all that practical. I recommend using this flashlight. It has a strobe setting and puts out 950 lumens. That bright of a light in strobe mode will disorient any attacker long enough for you to escape.

u/Undercover500 · 4 pointsr/flashlight

I carry the Lumintop Tool 2.0 AA and love it. I don’t use the 14500 since I want a low mode that’s not 16 lumens, but other than that I love the light and the ~250lm turbo on a NIMH battery is all I need. We like to fool ourselves thinking we need 1,000 lumens for EDC, and while I do carry a larger 18650 light with almost 1,300 lumens, which is nice to have but realistically, 250-300lm is probably good enough for most of my purposes.

NP. You might also want to get everyone into the habit of alerting a housemate when they leave the house to take out garbage, walk dog, etc, so that if they aren't back in a few minutes someone knows immediately that they are gone.

I also like to keep one of these by the door and take it on walks, etc. Provides light when you need it and doubles as a club, and you can use this to keep your hands free.

What happened? Did you alert the police? Has he shown up again?

u/berlin-calling · 3 pointsr/urbanexploration

Bring a Maglight flashlight - good for light AND self defense if needed.

Some people carry a pack of cigs to give to the homeless to keep them at bay.

To keep away gang members or drug addicts - good luck. You should be researching places BEFORE you just hop right into them. Chances are someone else has been there and has info about it online. If it's in a drug infested area or is known to have tons of squatters, you're probably going to want to avoid it.

Yes it's safe. I own and use one on my rifle.

The lens is "Unbreakable polycarbonate with scratch-resistant coating" and the light source is "C4®LED technology, impervious to shock with a 50,000 hour lifetime." [Source - Polytac Fact Sheet from Streamlight.com]

It's also marketed as a weapons light by Streamlight themselves (scroll down to see ad on that link where Streamlight advertises it as a weapons light), and commonly used as a weapons light by people in the firearms community. One guy even shot over 500 rounds of 12 gauge buck with his Polytac and it's still running just fine.

The Olight S2 has a side switch, and I know many people enjoy their products. I don't have any experience with Olight, but take a look at the Amazon link, and the product page on their website, and see what you think.

For a battery, I'm not sure if Olight has low voltage protection on their flashlights (and hopefully someone else can chime in on this), so if it does, Sanyo NCR18650GA batteries are on sale at IMR. If not, a protected cell will be a good idea.

For a charger, the Thrunite C2 is pretty good, with the ability to act as a powerbank and a charger, and it also comes with its own protected cell. If you don't feel any need to have more than one 18650, just get this, and you get the charger and the cell for $16.

u/coherent-rambling · 3 pointsr/flashlight

If you specifically need the ability to focus the light down to a small spot, with little or no spill light around said spot, you're going to have a hard time reaching 1,000 lumens. The optics used in that type of focusing mechanism are only about 20% efficient at full zoom, which makes 1,000 lumens of output almost impossible in that configuration.

The Wowtac A3S and the more expensive but better-built Brinyte B158 are the only lights I know of that come anywhere close to your requirements, but both will only produce anything like 1,000 lumens on the full wide-angle setting. Once you focus it down to a spot you'll be working with more like 250-300 lumens. Physics is a harsh mistress sometimes. If you need the output for maximum long-range performance, you'll be much better served by something with a reflector (which is about 80% efficient instead of 20%).

u/684692 · 3 pointsr/flashlight

I agree with the Wowtac A2S/Convoy S2+ suggestion, and will add a link for the Convoy S2+ suggestion. The older Convoy S2+ have worse UIs, the SST-20 LED models are all new and it's a pretty decent LED anyway. Unless you have a real strong preference towards blue tinted lights, if you go that route get the 4000k and either 6 7135 or 8 7135. More 7135 is more brightness, faster battery drain.

If you really want AA, look into the Lumintop Tool AA, although it takes 14500 (3.7V AA sized batteries) also, for more brightness. There's a bundle version on amazon with a 14500 with micro-USB charging built in. It's LED is not as good and I'd only suggest this if you really want small.

On charging 18650s (or 14500s): A 12v cigarette to USB adapter would work, with the note that you shouldn't charge your lithium-ion batteries in a hot vehicle, as it degrades the battery life. You also shouldn't store them in freezing weather and plan on using it, as it just won't work well until it warms up.

Decent portable chargers: Nitecore F1 will charge lithium batteries and can act as a powerbank.
Olight Universal Charger can charge most things and is pretty foolproof.

I know what you're saying tho, the 26 has that "pinky hang" that some cant get accustomed to especially if you've got big ol hands.

Its funny, I did the opposite of you and picked up the 26 to celebrate my ccw! Hope you enjoy your new piece man.

u/TomTheGeek · 2 pointsr/guns

Some people will say it's cheap but it's worked great for me: Nebo ProTec Elite HP190. The Streamlight TLR-3 is even smaller and a more respected brand but pricey. I have both and either will do the job. They mount to the rail under the barrel.

u/PurduePaul · 2 pointsr/CCW

There's also the TLR-4 which is considerably cheaper than the TLR-2.

I have no experience with the TLR-4 but I do have the TLR-3 (One without the laser) and I really like it a lot. Its lightweight and small but still very bright.

Saying that though, I really love the TLR-1s that my dad has. Its more durable and brighter than the TLR-3. Right now on amazon its on sale and I would buy it over the TLR-4. Its strobe function would be more useful than a laser.

u/BrianDFS · 2 pointsr/ar15

I have a TLR-1s and a TLR-1s HP and they are both fantastic. I just picked up the HP to run on the rifles and moved the regular TLR-1s back to the G19. The HP will throw a concentrated beam to about 400+ yards.

u/Thjoth · 2 pointsr/Firearms

I wouldn't buy it from CTD because they like to crank up their shipping prices, meaning you'll probably pay $30 to ship that thing. I found it at Opticsplanet and Amazon where it should be more reasonable.

I suggest you take a look at Eneloops - basically rechargeable batteries. They've come a long way and give you more options: this way, any AAA flashlight becomes feasible, rather than that is already rechargeable.

Second, Parametrek is spot on - a firefly mode is what you want. The ThruNite Ti3 comes to mind, for about $15 from Amazon (https://www.amazon.com/ThruNite-Ti3-Max120-Lumens-Flashlight/dp/B00EC0FY1O/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1496145358&sr=8-1&keywords=thrunite%2Bti3&th=1) - uses an AAA battery, or an AAA Eneloop like I mentioned above.

Another option is the ITP A3 EOS. It's similar to the Olight i3s, except the ITP A3 starts off in moonlight mode. (https://www.amazon.com/A3-EOS-Outputs-Keychain-Flashlight/dp/B006K5C2EG/ref=sr_1_1?s=sporting-goods&ie=UTF8&qid=1496145850&sr=1-1&keywords=itp+a3+eos)

These two lights are "keychain" lights - running off a single AAA battery and are small enough to fit on a keychain.

When I worked on oil rigs in Saudi Arabia, I used these often at night. They were unreasonably bright. They last long enough on a single battery that I wasn't really that worried about it. I did have a battery charger with extra batteries onsite.

This was back in 2015, there are probably upgraded versions on the market now (brighter/longer lasting). Also a slightly larger form factor could fit additional batteries.

Back when I got these, they were 96 lumens, then 120 lumens. Now they are upgraded to 150 lumens. I guess they're using the Cree XP-G2 LED these days, and a cursory search shows this LED is available in lots of flashlights with many form factors. I'd recommend it.

https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B006K5C2EG/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&psc=1

They're tiny, but that was a plus in my book. With LED's, size no longer correlates to brightness in any meaningful way.

If you really want a fancy one, look for an LED with a high "Color Rendering Index". That will be more difficult to find. But the light will show you corrosion/small leaks, etc much better.

u/EyeballFryer · 2 pointsr/flashlight

For those $1-5 flashlights, do you have a picture, link, or at least their names? I'm curious to see how crappy they are. The cheapo flashlights that I'm thinking of, such as the currently $9 Coast HP1 or even this dirt cheap $3.50 Ultrafire SK68 clone should be "bright enough" to work your way around a dark home, even using AA batteries.

And in 1989 when the Loma Prieta earthquake hit the Bay Area, I did the same thing - ran out of my house. I live in a small apartment right now, so I'm never far away from my flashlight collection and stash of batteries.

u/_Chemistry_ · 2 pointsr/Hoboken

If you still have issues, you can put a light dusting of flour (or Baby Powder) on your floors before you go to sleep to figure out where the mice are coming from. They will leave tracks. I usually would dust the floor of my kitchen. Doesn't need to be that deep, just a feathery dusting. Don't worry, flour can easily be swept up in the morning.

Also if you are still at your wits end - using a UV light to track urine stains would give you an idea where the rodents are coming from.

u/SexyShavenWookie · 2 pointsr/funkopop

I had the same thoughts as you. I grabbed a UV light on Amazon that was marketed to find "pet stains." Aluminum construction with 12 LEDS, does a great job on Solarez (I prefer the thin over the thick version). I think I paid about 9 or 10 bucks for it:

Get a flashlight like this. If you ever lose power or need to spot something, you don't want some trashy disposable plastic light from Wal-Mart that only shines 10 feet. Something like the one I linked will serve you much better for any purpose.

A fire extinguisher set is really useful. Even if you don't think you will need it, spending $30 to have a much higher chance of not burning down your kitchen is worth it IMO.

Get a UPS for your computers, gaming consoles, and similar items. A surge protector for every electronic device that you don't want to lose in a storm. I can't tell you how many times I've seen customers lose their TVs and computers in storms because they plug them straight into the wall. Also, if you are in an area prone to lightning storms and lightning damage, you should note that a surge can travel through HDMI and other connections. Your TV might be plugged into a surge protector, but is your blu-ray player?

On a separate note, does anyone know about firing slugs or, specifically, Winchester PDX1 Defensive shells through this? (The shells with a 1oz slug and three 00 buckshot pellets.) Guy at the gun shop when I picked it up told me I couldn't fire slugs or even any steel shells through it. Nothing I can find online seems to jive with that though and actually seems to suggest the opposite. Are you opposed to rechargeable batteries? Something that uses an 18650 will be a lot brighter and give you better battery life.

Here are a couple of options, option one is brighter and has a little tighter hot spot. You also get a choice of what color temp you want. It will take 2 weeks to a month to arrive. Option two isn't quite as bright but it's still a nice light, it's big benefits are that it has a magnetic tail cap which can be nice, and the clip faces the other way so if you wear a hat you can use it like a headlamp. You'll have it in a week or less.

I don't know if it complies with the rules but I would enter the giveaway with a Lumintop AA that I would give to my roommate. He likes to borrow the lights that popped up in our house since I found this place here on reddit, but is not interested enough to get some himself.

I use this, but it requires a hat with a brim

Doesn't have all the bells and whistles but it's sturdy, the low setting is just enough to see by, and the high setting is bright as shit. Takes AA batteries or the lithium version if you want rechargeables. Also comes with a little plastic cover that turns it into a lantern, although it's too bright to do anything but hang. if you put it in your field of vision, it will blind you.

u/morgueanna · 1 pointr/AdviceAnimals

I keep a Maglight in the driver door compartment of my car. It takes 3 D-cell batteries and is the same type of flashlight cops carry with them. No cop is going to question why you have a flashlight in your car.

A Maglight is shorter than a baseball bat, and therefore easier to keep near you in a vehicle. In a fight, a smaller, heavier blunt object is better for self defense. There's a reason police officers use small clubs and not a long stick. Plus, you may actually need a flashlight someday in your car.

Oh jesus effing christ. So spraying pepper spray at someone is the same as shooting them? I mean it's a serious crime here too if done maliciously, but in self-defense, c'mon.

They're just ensuring that the only people who can defend themselves are the physically larger people, aren't they? How fair is that? Ridiculous.

Either way, your best bet is deterrence from here on out... so think theft prevention devices, sirens, etc. Also get yourself a high lumen flashlight....or maybe a good stout maglight ;-)

Davis native (lived outside city limits but whatever) and UCD graduate. Olive drive is one of the highest crime areas of Davis (according to the police crime statistics, down town and the frat area is FAR HIGHER). However this is Davis, so when I say high crime for Davis, that still means very low crime.

So the worst thing that happened to me on Olive Drive was being yelled at by a homeless man. I was walking on one of the bike trails (the one that connects campus to Murder Burger, and yes it is Murder Burger). The homeless man was camping in a drainage ditch and woke up because my friends and I were speaking loudly. He chased us for about a minute. It spooked us pretty bad but looking back I don't feel we were in any danger.

Downtown and any place on campus will have drunk students, which frankly are more dangerous than the Davis homeless most of the time.

There is a mobile home park south of olive drive, they used to generate a lot of crime that spilled into the olive drive area. The mobile park has been cleaned up however (rent prices jumped, funny how that works) so it isn't much of an issue now.

Here is a list of things I think you should know.

  • Olive drive is near the Murder Burger and In-N-Out, if you are not careful you will gain weight
  • The road connecting the I-80 off ramp to Olive drive is riddled with pot holes. Be very careful driving it.
  • Most party nights in Davis tend to end near Murder Burger, In-N-Out, I-HOP, or one of the bars in downtown near the toad hole (the bike under pass near Olive, I'm not sure what you kids are calling it these days), so if you live on Olive Drive drunk friends will crash at your place. I would suggest keeping bottled water, a few extra blankets and pillows, and some accessible condoms in the main room of your apartment.
  • For walking around late at night I would suggest one of these. They are very bright, the mag-light is also heavy duty enough to be used as a defensive weapon should you need it. However running is a far better option and the light should be plenty to get a head start.

Edit Don't forget to lock your bike, they will take it if you don't**. Get a heavy duty U lock. Spend at least $50.** I would suggest something like this.

Thanks to this sub I found the Olight i6 Paladin. I bought it like 8 months ago for around $80, but the price has since dropped to $40. I bought it from Amazon.

For those on mobile or something the dets are:

  • 420 Lumens for 1 hr
  • 80 Lumens for 5.8 hours
  • Cree XM-L LED
  • Two brightness levels
  • Water resistant to IPX-8 standard
  • Mil-Spec MIL-STD-810F

Next is the Streamlight TLR-1 weapon light.

  • 200-300 Lumens at 2.5 hours supposedly, but I think it's more around 1.5
  • C4 LED, shock resistant, 50,000 hour lifetime
  • 4.18 oz
  • Water proof up to 1 meter for 30 minutes by IPX7 standards
  • The model I have has a strobe function. Also has a always on, or hold switch for on mode.
  • You can find it for $110ish, the old price was closer to $200.

Then the light I regret buying but didn't care to return--the TLR-3. I bought the TLR-3 only to realize the TLR-1 was significantly better and decently priced.

  • 100 Lumens for 1.5 hours
  • Momentary/steady on/off switch.
  • You can find it for around $70

The TLR is the "poor mans" weapon light, if you have money you should look into Surefire.

Before I bought the weapon lights, I thought the "arm" on the back of the light that extends past the trigger guard was part of the mount system, but it's actually the switch. Just a now you know type thing.

The TLR-1 HL is really great, stupidly bright, has strobe, and isn't nearly as expensive as you'd expect for a light of this caliber. There is also the TLY-1s which is not as insanely bright, but still has strobe and is a bit cheaper. As long as your G19 has a full pistol rail they should fit, they might extend a bit past the end of the barrel, but they should fit.

It's an absolutely FANTASTIC option to have. If you're into having a laser, the TLR-2 is a viable alternative as well. I use one and it's indispensable being able to control the light and have a free hand to work your mic/open doors/etc. during building searches.

Remember to invest in a holster that properly fits it - some officers will carry one in an ASR pouch and mount it before going into a search, but I view that as waaaaay too time consuming and risky.

This is what i carry (well... lost it too) and it is good, but it's great when you put a 10440 in it. "Not recommended", been using it for 2 years with a 10440 though, no problem. It is small and cheap, which i like: i tend to lose stuff, so replacing won't cost me too much. Will buy a new one fairly soon.

u/Camo5 · 1 pointr/flashlight

Weight is not a concern for me, size is one of main concern, It's gotta be small :3

As I have discovered, the ti3 (and Olight i3s, and the iTP-A3-EOS ) are both capable of using 10440 cells. I looked around about the eiger, and discovered it has a disclaimer saying keep away from children because of how hot the light gets...

It's also above the cost of the olight (I would need to at least buy some 10440's to go along with one of the AAA lights)

As far as output is concerned, I don't care if it's continuously variable or button or twisty -

but i DO want the light to always start on its low setting, and all of the lights I mentioned do that.

So, what am I getting out of the eiger for that extra $45? (I don't plan on changing any batteries while underwater) What I really want to see is a comparison beamshot test between the three lights when they are all using a 10440.

http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B006K5C2EG/ref=mp_s_a_1_2?qid=1452795374&sr=8-2&pi=SY200_QL40&keywords=eos+itp+flashlight&dpPl=1&dpID=41E%2B8nxBiWL&ref=plSrch

It is 11 grams without the key chain or battery. Uses normal AAA batteries so easy to replace out in the world. 55 hours on low with alkaline, and the low is all I ever want, but gets insane bright. I use a baseball cap, so you flip the clip and clip it to the brim. Easy grab to go handheld or toss to someone else for a moment. It is not technically a headlamp but I consider it my headlamp. Only thing to consider I can think of is do you wear a cap, and would you want a wider throw, which I do not find necessary.

u/Shadowfocks · 1 pointr/EDC

Coast HP1 is pretty fantastic. Runs on a single AA or 10440. With the 10440 you get 190 lumens. Thing is tough, waterproof, strong clip.

Best thing about it though, is the zoomable lens. Goes from a near perfect super wide flood (great for indoors) to a super focused long throw.

Little under $9 on amazon right now.

u/CHAINMAILLEKID · 1 pointr/BSA

Give LEDs another try.
By far their best quality is their efficiency and durability.

A burned out LED should never be a problem with an adequately designed system. And if the entire lamp fails than its more than likely just a bad product or an unlucky lemon.

My choice of brand is Coast. They're a bit expensive, but they don't pad their specs and they have really good optics.

Here is a cheaper AA sized flashlight that looks pretty good.

http://www.amazon.com/Coast-HP1-Focusing-Lumen-Flashlight/dp/B00IEMUOWU

But if you're getting a flashlight for yourself that'll let the boys know who's boss, you're going to want to get this one:

http://www.amazon.com/Coast-HP17-Focusing-lumen-Flashlight/dp/B0037K830E

u/notwerby2 · 1 pointr/flashlight

If you're worried about the battery issue, you could go with a light that takes a AA or a 14500 like the coast hp1. If they want the extra power they can choose to buy the batteries and charger but if not for ten bucks its a great light, especially for someone who may not care about a fancy higher end light. And the focusing beam makes it very versatile between flood and throw. (Speaking as a big city resident.) It was my first light, and I was very impressed compared to all the other crap lights i previously owned, but its not impressively bright the way many of the other popular lights on this sub are. The $10 price tag made it an easy choice as a way to get my feet wet.

Anything by Fenix will be quality. REI will sell you a E05 or E12 (aaa and aa lights)

For $10 that looks like a good buy. I will get one as a white-elephent gift and see what I think of it (any maybe get another if I like it, I have been wanting a good AA light to go with all my rechargeable ones that my current camera does not use.)

Edit:
This also looks like a serviceable unit
http://www.amazon.com/Coast-HP1-Focusing-LED-Flashlight/dp/B00IEMUOWU/ref=lp_2445457011_1_3?s=hardware&ie=UTF8&qid=1418849192&sr=1-3

u/bazilbt · 1 pointr/flashlight

I recommend whatever you get use non-rechargeable lithium batteries if it's going to sit in storage and be only occasionally used. Batteries in flashlights tend to burst.

I would recommend this instead:
http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00IEMUOWU/ref=psdc_2445457011_t3_B006E0QAFY

then pick up a pack of lithium batteries:
http://www.amazon.com/Energizer-Ultimate-Lithium-Batteries-High-Tech/dp/B00003IEME/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1450754396&sr=8-3&keywords=aa+lithium+batteries

You can use alkalines just don't store them in your light.

u/HerbertTarlek · 1 pointr/flashlight

If it's not too late, I'd suggest a Coast HP1 and a Nitecore 25mm Red Filter, both available with Amazon Prime. For rechargeable batteries you can't go wrong with AA Eneloops (the battery I'd normally recommend anyway), and if down the road you want more light you can always pick up a 14500. With AAs, though, it will still be bright enough to be useful while not being obnoxious or getting too hot to hold.

I don't have the listed Nitecore filter, but the head of my HP1 measures 25mm, so it should fit just right.

u/byzantinedavid · 1 pointr/flashlight

First, 10440? or 14500? 10440 is AAA size Lithium, 14500 is AA size.

Also, for both AAA and AA you can run Eneloops in almost any AA/AAA light to save replacing batteries.

Nothing in a AA/AAA size is really going to be "throwy" in that form factor.

The ThruNite Archer 2A would have a throw of ~100 meters, which is WAY bigger than you'd need for a theater, and you can buy some Eneloops and a charger for less than the Coast.

If you want the smaller form factor, the ThruNite Ti4(or its Titanium Cousin) will have about ~54 meters of throw (which would be enough) in a slimmer package and again leave room for a charger and batteries.

u/Lorzion · 1 pointr/flashlight

Thrunite Archer 2A Neutral White with the L91 batteries that parametrek mentioned would do well. Nice long run times on the low modes to not eat up those expensive batteries. And you can always roll with Eneloops when you know you're going to be using it on a trip or something and not storing it in the sweltering heat.

USB charging in a light smaller than a 18650 is going to be rare.

Here's three options, but be aware they don't have USB charging.
The ThruNite T10 and the ThruNite Archer 2A v3 are both available on Amazon.

Or check out the ArmyTek Partner A2 if you want to squeeze the max out of AAs at this price point.

Your best bet would be one of these. Yes, its expensive. You won't be able to use AA's anymore, either. This driver only works with 2x14500 Li-Ion cells. You won't find a readily available driver that works with 2xAA. Let us know if you decide you want to do this and we can discuss the options.

Realistically, you might be better off with a new light. If you want to stick with 2xAA, something like the Thrunite Archer 2A V3 in neutral white. It'll have a better UI, and it will be much more robust and reliable.

For $12 it's a decent light but it's not very impressive in general compared to what many of us carry. I know a ton of great flashlights, headlamps, and lanterns but your original request was outside the box since your looking for a corded speciality light for automotive. This is definitely an area that could benefit from good manufacturer designs but are currently poorly designed.

One flashlight that stands out is the Armytek Prime C2 Pro v3 because of the magnetic tailcap. Could come in handy quite often for shorter duration tasks so he's not dragging a corded light everywhere. If you do go this route, let me know if you need help with a battery and charger. I know a basic combo setup for ~$13.

u/hydrogenous · 1 pointr/flashlight

>IMO this is an under-served lighting requirement when it comes to good LED solutions.

I bought one for my GF and we have enough chargers and 14500s that I could set him up.

I was disappointed that TEKTON didn't have anything particularly appealing. They seem to have a great rep on Amazon and I have nothing but good stuff to say about the socket wrench set I bought for under my Jeep's seat.

I looked at Snap-On, but they all look to be rebranded Chinese crap. Normally I'm a huge proponent of cheap Shenzhen lights, but I'd rather not be tricked by re-branding junk products with brand names.

Before the list, I would just like to personally thank all of you on the EDC sub. Many of the things I use everyday, I bought after seeing them here and reading your reviews and recommendations. I love seeing the diversity of the tools and stuff you all use. I'm including links to where I got my things just to save anyone the time searching.

Here's my EDC on a budget...

Phone: OnePlus 5t (8GB/128GB). Recently replaced my aging Nexus 5. No phone has ever been perfect in my eyes, but the 5t is awesome and lightning fast, and it doesn't have a bunch of bullcrap and bloatware.
https://www.oneplus.com/5t

Knife: Gerber Suspension. I have several knives, but this is the one that goes with me everywhere. The pliers, screwdrivers and scissor get used more than the blade.
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000EDPT9K/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Watch: Timex Field Chrono. Inexpensive, accurate and reliable. Plus I think it looks cool.
https://www.amazon.com/Timex-T49905-Expedition-Chronograph-Leather/dp/B0083XFHIG/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8

Flashlight: J5 Tactical V1. Got this to replace my Mini-Mag LED that constantly flickers with even the slightest shake or bump. I used to love Mags when they had incandescent bulbs. They really f'ed up their LED tech though.
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00V7T1YRQ/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o01_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Field Notes: I also do drone photos for real estate and I use this as a flight log.
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0034KDEMO/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Other stuff: Cheap glasses because I lose or break them about every 6 months. Chapstick, Levis wallet, car keys, G2 pen, wallet survival card ($1 at Walmart) comes in handy.

Not pictured: Altoids to cover up the coffee breath. Ringke Fusion phone case.

Have you thought about getting small flashlight? I own Olight S1 Baton and it works great when I am traversing my apartment when dark (I'm the one who goes to the bed last).

As for strain - make sure brightness is set to low value. What strains the eyes the most is not the screen per se, but the difference between pitch dark and torch light from super bright monitor. Turning down the brightness will ease that.

edit: You could also get anti-glare (so called "computer") glasses, but those can get expensive. On the other hand, sometimes employers refund those, so you might be in luck.

I really like my Maglight XL-50, it's a great light for 30$. People here don't like it too much as it is AAA and apparently the driver or led isn't top notch, but I have had this for four years now and still love it. The Olight S2 is generally considered a much better light, and seriously you would want to invest in one that uses 18650s instead of AA or AAA as they aren't even expensive and have lots of benefits.

I like this idea, (EDIT) I'm having trouble interpreting the runtime/lumens chart in the photos of this page.

I think to get > 200 lumens, you'd have to use a 14500 cell, and that will only yield about 45 mins of runtime. NiMH and Alkaline cells will give more time, but lumens dip to 120.

It sounds like this light won't produce enough light for long enough?

u/dubyrunning · 1 pointr/flashlight

A sleeve pocket sounds like a cumbersome place to carry a light, but I don't know your work outfit requirements. If that's where you want to carry it, a smaller light, like on that uses a AAA battery, or a AA at the biggest might be your best bet. Neither will be quite as bright as a light using an 18650 battery can get, but for the use you've described you should get more than enough light for the job.

Something like the [Lumintop Tool AAA](http://Lumintop Tool AAA) or Lumintop Tool AA might serve you well. The AA will be significantly brighter than the AAA, but will also be a little bigger, so check out the product pictures and description to decide if the size will work for your pocket and needs. Based on your description, the AAA should be more than bright enough.

If you'd consider a right angle light, the Manker E02 might be a good choice for you. If runs on a AAA so it should be compact enough for your sleeve pocket. Also, due to its right angle it can be clipped onto your clothes so it will continue to shine where you need it even when you're not holding it, keeping both hands-free. The Manker E02H is the same light, but comes with a headband so you can wear it as a headlamp as well. Both versions have a magnetic tail so you can stick it to a nearby metal object to light up an area.

It's not quite that cold in Utah, so I have no idea which batteries are best, but I have a strong preference for dual switch (tail power, side e-switch) for biking in the winter. My Thorfire Tk15s has been in bike strobe mode since early fall, and I've never accidentally changed the mode turning it on and off with gloves on.

So, maybe a Sofirn C8f with a 21700 would have enough juice for you. It don't think it has bike strobe, but I've always thought it would be fun to put on my handlebars. The triple should be more efficient than a single emitter, and the 21700 has more capacity than 18650s.

ETA: Oops, it appears a 21700 won't fit in your i4. Maybe a 26650 light?

Would absolutely love the Sofirn SP33 v2.0 - have been on the lookout for a good 26650 flooder for a while but nothing has really scratched the itch so far!

(I also want to get one of the old Dolphin torches and mod the life out of it, but that's another project...)

Thanks for running the GAWs!!!

I guess I'd like a Sofirn SP33. Give me a better light recommendation for small pocket light around the size of an S2 with as many lumens as possible :)

Really cool thing to do! I like the idea of smaller and more frequent, gets more people involved and more lucky winners. Thank you! Ace beam would be a great addition to my collection! https://www.amazon.com/ACEBEAM-Flashlight-Bright-Lumens-Flashlights/dp/B07S6SWPF9

Thanks for the giveaway! At a certain price point it opens up the doors for a lot more higher quality lights. Like when we reach $60/60,000 member giveaway I feel like Olight’s, Zebralight, and Armytek became available (some). Maybe put a cap at like $80 and do giveaways at every 5k members? Tough decision but nobody can fault you for your generosity.

The TK16 osram has intrigued me

Amazing! I've only been here a few months, but this is one of the more helpful subreddits there is!

Since neither Armytek nor Zebralight sellers on Amazon will ship to me, I'll pick something silly: the Acebeam TK16 Osram mini thrower!

Let's see what they're all about

If I win this and I like it, I will definitely venture into other versions of this with nicer tints and shells.

First off, thanks so much for the giveaway! I only just subscribed a few weeks ago, so I can't really comment on the frequency or value of giveaways.

My choice would be a lumintop fw3a

u/Civilized_Pirate · 1 pointr/flashlight

Wow, this would be awesome to win! Such a cool community, and the search tool you made is stellar!

I would love a Lumitop LFW3A

As always thanks!!

FW3a has a 25% off coupon on Amazon. I'm new to decent flashlights but it seems to be a good price

You should put a Baton S1 on it! I have been thinking about mounting mine because it's a very bright light for it's size.
