Some ideas that have worked for my anxious kitty who also didn’t like exercise:

Feliway brand pheromone spray and collar (or any of their other products). It helps the cats feel calm and humans can’t smell them. https://www.feliway.com/us

A timed auto feeder. My cat has harassed auto feeders instead of me, which is a nice break for me.

Indoor hunting feeder (like this brand https://docandphoebe.com/). It mixes exercise and play with food because the cat has to seek out where their food is hidden.

“Puzzle” feeders like this one: https://www.amazon.com/PetSafe-Egg-Cersizer-Interactive-Dispenser-Treats/dp/B003H44R5K. Like the hunting feeder, the cat will have to work at least a bit to get his food.

Lots of toys for exercise! I sew mini pillows (about the size of your palm) and fill them with catnip and crinkly paper in addition to normal polyester pillow stuffing. I hide them around the house for the cats to find. They love them and they’re very cheap to make with scrap fabric.

I’ve also introduced more rewards that aren’t food related. Our one cat (Spud) needed to lose quite a bit of weight. It was hard because I love to give him treats when he’s sweet. I started giving him bits of catnip, cat grass, toys, extra cuddles, and brushing him instead. He now has more things he associates with positive behavior that aren’t treats!

I wish you the best!!

I would do the same, and change out my cats' water bowl each morning. They were particular about fresh water as well. And as soon as I got them a fountain, they started drinking from it A LOT more often. They loved it! Mine has a little charcoal filter in the intake, so it's been lasting pretty well. Cats really prefer moving water, which is why they love it so much. Mine specifically drink out of the mini waterfall part. Cats also usually like it better when their food and water are separated, in different spots.

u/takabrash · 60 pointsr/aww

I made fun of my partner when she bought an automatic cat feeder, but that thing has been worth every cent. We always know they've had their food, and they don't wake us up in the morning wanting breakfast anymore!

u/unstoppablenow · 43 pointsr/cats

The automatic litter box from Amazon. The one with the purple privacy hood. Get it. Life changer. Set up the crystal litter on subscription. Change it once a month in 2 minutes. http://www.amazon.com/ScoopFree-Self-Cleaning-Litter-Box/dp/B000ELUQQS

u/Sarthax · 30 pointsr/funny

Mine learned to camp out at the dispenser and eventually learned how to put his paw inside the chute and push the food paddles and make more food come out. He ate weeks worth of food in a few days.

Stay the heck away from this dispenser or you'll have a disgustingly fat cat.
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0016BVY2U/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Edit, look at the pics and comments and see what wacky solutions people have come up with to fix this broken dispenser. It's a collection of rube goldberg machines.

u/Offroadkitty · 25 pointsr/StartledCats

Speak for your self, I see mine do clumsy stuff like this at least once a week. Fall off a fish tank into an empty laundry basket, jump from desk to dresser but fall short and land in the water fountain..

EDIT: fountain

u/Ask_Me_Who · 21 pointsr/AdviceAnimals

You can get things like ScoopFree or other self-cleaning trays for older cats to use. You still don't need to clean it that often but they can cost a little more in maintenance.

u/kfunke · 20 pointsr/cats

So cute! I have a special kitty too that does not like water from anywhere but the sink. I was able to convert him to the fountain lifestyle using this fountain.

u/InvincibleAgent · 15 pointsr/FromKittenToCat

If the diet doesn't work, I've heard good things about this feeder curbing over-eating.

u/LakotaSilver · 14 pointsr/cats

Goodness, what a cutie! She looks like a Chloe or an Emma to me ;}

Pretend as if you're about to adopt a very mobile, active toddler/baby human. Try to look around your home and see any things the cat might get into/eat/destroy and tidy up those things as much as possible. For example, if you have blinds on the window in your room, you might want to tie up the pull-strings so a curious cat can't grab them, and tuck electrical cords away as best you can. If you have any houseplants, google them online to make sure they aren't toxic (a good place to start is https://www.aspca.org/pet-care/animal-poison-control/cats-plant-list ). Cats definitely won't stop themselves from eating toxic plants - my 19-year-old idiot decided the green onions in the backyard looked tasty one day and tried a bite, and my 1-year-old idiot had a go at a poinsettia I had inside (it has since been exiled to the backyard - the plant, not the cat!)

I also personally NEVER leave out any toys that my cats can easily rip up and ingest parts of - this means nothing small and nothing with feathers, string, leather, or straw. Cats can get VERY sick and die if they eat string/"linear foreign bodies".

I only leave out sturdy "interactive" toys that the cats can initiate play with on their own, such as these:

https://www.amazon.com/Petmate-Crazy-Circle-Interactive-Large/dp/B0002AT5AO

https://www.amazon.com/Petstages-317-Tower-Tracks-Chase/dp/B00DT2WL26/ref=sr_1_1?s=pet-supplies&ie=UTF8&qid=1487151213&sr=1-1&keywords=tower+of+tracks

Putting normal toys away when it isn't "playtime" also helps keep the cat from getting bored with the toys. And cats CAN be curious about the strangest things - they'll want to open cupboards and knock things off tables and investigate every box and bag that comes into the house. So if anyone in your house takes medicines, make sure the bottles are closed very firmly, and put away in a cupboard, things like that. If you have things that you collect (like statues or figurines) or if you have anything breakable, make sure it isn't sitting on a table where a cat can paw it off onto the ground! A cat will paw at/investigate everything. You can't protect them from everything, and no one can put away everything in their lives, but you can take a few precautions.

Another general word of advice I can give, and it's perhaps the most important one, is do not feed her kibble. No kibble at all. Feed her canned food only (preferably grain-free). Kibble is terrible and leads to a number of health problems, including urinary tract problems, kidney problems, and chronic dehydration (which leads to constipation). Long story short, for the best health, cats should be fed a grain-free canned formula high in meat protein, which is closer to their normal, natural diet, and no kibble whatsoever. Even the worst canned food is miles better than the "best" high-quality gourmet kibble. Kibble has no benefits at all. It is worth the $$$ to feed a canned food diet, you will save money in vet bills and dental cleanings overall.

If you are interested, the reason for wet food is this - cats have a very low thirst drive, as they evolved from desert-dwelling animals, and have changed very little after our "domestication" of them - genetically and physically, they're still pretty much 99% their ancestors. A wild feline is designed to get almost all of its moisture needs out of its prey (meat, blood) and thus has very little "urge" to drink. Even if you think a cat is drinking enough, it's not. Any cat on kibble is in a state of dehydration - they simply do not drink enough to make up for it.

The other benefit of high-protein, grain-free canned foods is that they have actual MEAT proteins, and will provide good, usable nutrients to your cats, instead of useless bulky grains and carbs. Most kibbles are mostly grains, which means they pass through the cat's digestive tract without being digested. The cat derives no nutritional value from them. On a good meaty canned food, cats will eat their meals and feel more appropriately full, because their bodies are able to actually digest the food they're eating. With kibble, especially free-fed kibble, a cat will always eat more than you realize they are, because they can't digest half of what they're eating, so they constantly feel hungry, because they're literally not getting the proper nutrition from their food.

Also - having cats on a species-appropriate diet will have one other benefit. Their poops will smell a LOT less! (On a raw diet, the poops will be small, dry, whitish, and they will have no smell at all. No joke. I can stick my entire head in the litterbox seconds after my cat drops a deuce and I can't smell a thing.) Cats bury their waste instinctively to protect themselves from being found by predators and competitors (other cats), so their bodies are designed to digest protein very efficiently and thus they will produce less waste and less smell when on an appropriate diet. And every cat owner wants a less stinky litterbox!

Fish is not an appropriate diet for cats - do not feed a food that is primarily fish or high in fish. Cats build up mercury in their bodies far faster than humans do, since they are smaller, plus fish causes other issues: http://www.littlebigcat.com/nutrition/why-fish-is-dangerous-for-cats/

Feed her A LOT. Kittens need to eat pretty much constantly as they are literally just calorie-burning growing machines ;} I've heard "feed a kitten as much as it will eat". Kittens usually need to eat up to 3x the recommended amount of adult food per day - when my younger girl was still a kitten, she would eat 6-7 cans (3oz each) per day. Keep offering food often - they need to eat every few hours.

Get vet checkups at least once a year (including dental checks/cleaning), and have her microchipped and have her wear a collar with ID tags at all times, even if you intend for her to be fully indoors. I have two friends, one in Arizona and the other in California, both who refused to put collars/ID tags on their cats because "oh, they'll never get out!" (One friend didn't even spay her cat, she was THAT convinced the cat would never escape.) Of course, both sets of cats got out - in Arizona through the carelessness of another family member, and in California as the result of a burglary that left a window smashed. One friend only found one of her cats. The other found hers, but the cat had gotten pregnant in the meantime. So, all cats should wear collars and ID tags, because no matter how careful YOU are, bad luck still happens!

Make sure you familiarize yourself with foods that are toxic to cats and keep them away from the cat - these include xylitol, chocolate, onions, garlic, and alcohol. As I mentioned before, many houseplants are toxic as well, such as poinsettias and lilies. Citrus fruits are toxic to cats. Many "essential oils" are also toxic to cats, so if you or anyone you live with uses scented oils or essential oils (such as tea tree oil), be careful.

Cats should instinctively use a litterbox. They do not want to "advertise" their presence to potential predators or rivals, so they should instinctively want to bury their waste to hide its scent.

You may want to get multiple litterboxes. The "general rule of thumb" is one box per cat plus one. Scoop every day! You can invest in rolls of "doggie-doo bags" like these - https://www.amazon.com/Bags-Board-Waste-Pick-up-Refill/dp/B000UCU53U I open one bag and put it next to me when I'm scooping the box. I drop the poops and pee-clumps into the doggie-doo bag, then tie off the bag and toss it! It helps keep stink to a minimum inbetween trash pickup days, and it's more sanitary than just dumping the bits straight into the trash can.

I also have my litterboxes on litter mats. They will save your sanity. This is my favorite one so far:

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01AUU90K0/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&psc=1

A litter mat REALLY helps "catch" most tracked-out litter. I've also got one of these mats, which is great for its size but isn't AS easy to clean:

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B016PHLNRA/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&psc=1

That's all I can think up off the top of my head for now :} I'm definitely no cat expert, but feel free to ask any other questions you might have!

That tower is really nice, I have the same one for my cat!

u/likethekeyonthekeybd · 11 pointsr/Pets

What about some toys that are like this? I use toys like these. They are prompted by the cat playing with it but are also encouraging them to keep playing by maintaining their interest.

u/nopooq · 9 pointsr/RATS

I wouldn’t worry too much about them during the day, as long as they get to do some sort of activity at night like free roaming in the living room or bathroom, or getting access to some fun toys.

To keep them amused, I would recommend taking a look at this page: http://karasratworld.tumblr.com/post/75017549861/rat-toy-masterpost which features a lot of great ideas for cheap, do-it-yourself toys for rats that you can make. I find that my rats are generally not interested in the ferret and cat toys I buy them from the pet store. Same with stuffed animals I give them. Cheap toys that my rats enjoy include: small cardboard boxes that fit in their cage - I will open one end of the box and put the open end on the floor, so that the box is upside down. They love bringing in paper towels and fabric scraps into the box and making a nest. My rats also love paper bags. Big brown paper bags from the grocery store, or small brown paper bags for packing lunch. They will also treat it as a little ‘cave’ or ‘den’ and bring paper towels into it to shred into a comfortable, warm rat nest that they then sleep on. It’s really cute, and it’s cheap! These generally need to be thrown out after 1-2 days because they will be urinated on, and a rat sleeping inside a paper bag isn’t receiving terribly great ventilation and will probably be inhaling the ammonia from the urine. Tissue boxes are also much enjoyed by my rats. I rip out the clear plastic lining surrounding the tissue hole before giving it to them, so that they can’t accidentally eat any of it when they chew up the box. I also like to give my rats paper towel or toilet paper roll cores for them to chew on or curiously poke their head into. My baby rat used to be able to walk through them too!

My rat also enjoyed this toy. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B003H44R5K/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&psc=1 It was recommended by another rat owner. It’s basically a toy with 3 holes, and you can turn the top half of the toy to control how many of these holes are open (1, 2, or all 3) and how big the openings are (half open, fully open, etc). You can put little treats in there. Treat recommendations include: home popped popcorn (microwave popcorn is covered in tons of unhealthy additives and flavorings), NON-sugary cereals, organic baby food “cereals” or puffs, sunflower seeds (in moderation!), maybe some sort of non-messy fruit like small blueberries. When I used to feed dry rat food to my rat, I would put the kibble bits into this toy and give it to her at night, so she had something to entertain herself with.

Other easy enrichment ideas include: nuts in shell. Just try to make sure they aren’t salted, and that they aren’t raw (unless soaked/sprouted). Brazil nuts in shell, peanuts in shell, pistachios, etc. They will have fun chewing off the shell to get the nut inside, and the chewing will allow them to wear down their teeth, which are always continuously growing. I want to say, however, that if your rats are sick with mycoplasma, you my want to avoid giving them nuts or seeds. Nuts and seeds are high in an amino acid called arginine, which has been said to trigger mycoplasma outbreaks. For this reason, my pink eyed white rat no longer gets sunflower seeds/nuts (but she gets plenty of other healthy treats!)

Regarding the sneezing:
Are you keeping them in a plastic storage container? With a lid of some sort? If so, the lack of ventilation may be contributing to the sneezing. Many rat fanatics are against keeping rats in glass tanks (the same ones used as fish aquariums), even if the top is covered in a wire mesh or open to the air, because they feel that having 4 solid walls hinders ventilation too much for it to be healthy. If you are keeping them in a bin with 4 solid walls (as opposed to in a wire cage where air flows through their 4 walls and ceiling easily), then their sneezing may be due to the lack of ventilation. More specifically, ammonia from their urine can irritate their respiratory systems. Pet rats are commonly said to have very sensitive respiratory systems, and unfortunately, rats are very prone to having a certain respiratory infection called mycoplasma. Mycoplasma is said to be so common in rats, that they every rat you come across will have it - UNLESS you specifically obtained a rat from a laboratory that was bred to be mycoplasma-free (a process which involves submersing the mother in an antiseptic and birthing her babies via sterile C-section, thereby sacrificing the mother’s life to keep her babies mycoplasma-free). A symptom to watch out for (aside from sneezing) is the buildup of a red substance on their face (especially around their eyes and nostrils) called porphyrin. Porphyrin is present in their mucus and saliva, and when a rat is sick with mycoplasma or stressed out, porphyrin buildup is commonly seen on their face. If you find this, I would recommend trying to get them into a better ventilated cage, cleaning their cage or changing their bedding more often (try to keep the amount of urine in the cage low by switching out towels more often, etc), giving them more fresh fruits and veggies (generally, if it’s a fruit/veggie that humans can eat raw, then female rats should be fine to have it too. Male rats should not be given citrus or mangos.)

I have two female rats - one is white with pink eyes. The other has black eyes and black and white fur. I notice that my pink-eyed-white wakes up and becomes active at 7:30pm, and is active all night until around 6am, when she becomes sleepy and goes to bed. When I stay home from work, she sleeps ALL day and the cage is super quiet until she wakes up at 7:30pm. My black eyed rat is a little younger, so she is more active, even during the daytime - but I am not sure if this difference is due to her youth or her eye color. (I specify their eye color because I have read that albino rats have a different REM sleep pattern. Source: http://www.ratbehavior.org/AlbinoPigmented.htm However, not all pink eyed whites are albino. Albino and pink eyed whites are not the same thing.) If your lady rats are anything like my pink eyed white, then they will likely be sleeping all day, so I would not worry about leaving them home. To further ease your concern, I want to say that I worked from home until I recently started having to go into the office for a 9-5 job, and I was also worried about my rats feeling neglected… until I learned their sleep patterns, and was able to confirm during my days off that my ratites are sleeping all day anyway. :)

To keep them entertained when they are awake, please consider trying some of the toy ideas in the website I linked above. It’s not my website, but I have definitely taken ideas from it that my rats enjoyed. The best toys are not necessarily the expensive ones or the ones that are time consuming to make. In my experience, my rats have enjoyed playing in things that would have gone into the garbage (boxes, paper bags, wrapping paper) more than the toys I bought them from the pet store.
If your rats are litter trained (which isn’t hard to do at all! but that’s a post for another day) and you have a spacious, rat proof bathroom where they cannot damage your items or escape, then a low effort way to exercise their bodies and minds may be to just leave their cage open in the bathroom, and throw some toys/boxes around the floor and let them explore. Maybe hide some food in there for them to find. Just be sure to rat proof the bathroom or remove things you don’t want them chewing on (toilet plunger, bottle of bleach toilet cleaner, bath rug, etc). Close the toilet seat so they don’t fall in.

I'm going to summon /u/iamadudette and say she would like this for her ADORABLE cat, Bubby.

She's probably one of the most talented people I know, her art is incredible, even if she doesn't believe it! I chose her because she's one of my best friends and she deserves good things.

Kindness is key.

u/BengalBean · 9 pointsr/aww

Get a Furminator or a Grooming Glove. Either one works really well. Use it regularly, and fur on clothes will be much less of an issue.

You can't eliminate it completely, but it does help a ton.

Also, buy a cat nail clipper and get him used to you doing his nails now while he's young. Touch his feet often, extend his nails, go through the motions whenever he's nice and relaxed. Making this process a no big deal thing while he's still young will make keeping them trimmed when he's an adult so much easier.

I sit my guys down weekly and go through the motions of clipping their nails, even if they don't need to be clipped (I just touch their claw with the clipper then move on), and give a couple treats after. So now, both my older ones are breezes to clip (kitten still learning!), while my friend's cat is a nightmare that requires sedation at the vet if her claws get really bad.

u/NatashaRomanof · 8 pointsr/AskWomen

Energy drinks are my favorite self-indulgent treats. Other little things for myself are cute earrings, stationary supplies like pens and washi tape, enamel pins, or makeup. I adore the Korean and Japanese makeup that comes in the cutest packaging. Most of that stuff I do not get on Amazon though.

I like getting stuff for my cats, too. I recently bought [one of these] (https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B00DT2WL26/ref=oh_aui_i_d_old_o0_img?ie=UTF8&psc=1). One of my cats loves it, the rest are mostly indifferent. Still worth it.

I also recently bought this set of succulent gardening tools to help me manage my growing succulent garden. It's very handy!

> What brand is the best?

What sort of cat litter are your cats used to?

For example, my cat liked the clay based cat litter, and wouldn't use the wood or paper based litter. I used Tidy Cats with a litter box liner.

If your cats are used to a certain type of litter (like, your mom buys different brands, but it's always a clay-based litter), make sure you stick with that material.

I also used a covered cat litter box and a litter mat.

Finally, I scooped 2x/day: once in the AM, once in the PM. And that was for ONE cat. Overkill? Maybe, but my house never smelled of cat urine or poo.

As a rule, cats don't like to pee/poo where other cats have gone, so I highly recommend you get two appropriately-sized boxed, box liners, and litter, and see how it goes. You might get lucky, or you might need to get a 3rd box. And start scooping on a regular schedule: I scooped right before I went to work, and right after I got home.

Outside cats usually have a shorter lifespan. As for the box of poo thing, it's really not that bad. You can use a litter box like this one:

https://www.amazon.com/ScoopFree-Self-Cleaning-Litter-Box/dp/B000ELUQQS

The crystals are really good at concealing odor. Just need to put the box in a corner somewhere that you won't see, and if you throw in a little of this each time you replace the crystals box it'll make it even less likely that you'll be able to smell it. If all of that fails, you can always spray a little of this to make it go away in-between box changes.

But even with all that I can see how the litter box thing might be a deal breaker for some people. I had a friend who always had semi-indoor cats and that's worked out well for him. Basically the cats are always inside, then he lets them out to take care of their business from time to time. I don't really know how often he'd let them out, but he definitely didn't have a litter box and there were never any accidents. I imagine their life span would be about the same as an indoor only cat, but not really sure. Would depend on how often they'd remain outside once let out, environmental factors etc. Something to ask a vet.

u/Lanark26 · 7 pointsr/pics

I didn't have that much problem with ours and the Citikitti. (She took to it pretty easily, though she did tend to protest enlarged holes by pooping in the bathtub.)

The secret for me was finding the Virbac CET chews which she'd get as rewards for proper pooping. She loves those things and will seek me out and lead me to the bathroom for confirmation of her pooping properly to get hers.

Another key was litter attractant. It worked pretty well. It initially got her to consider the tray and I've used it on occasion to lure her back to proper behavior if she decides she's having none of the balancing act.

u/kimikat · 7 pointsr/Pets

I have that one and this one.
If you can spring for the latter, it holds more water (even with the optional reservoir you can get for the former) and it is much easier to clean. You can buy a reusable filter for it and cheap charcoal from the fish section of the pet store and save quite a bit of money over time! My cats love both fountains.

u/sunrisesunbloom · 7 pointsr/Pets

It's not good for a cat to be fat. It can cause health problems down the line. He also needs to stop eating human food and hot dogs; get him down to scheduled feeding twice a day. Make sure you're measuring out exactly how much he's actually supposed to be eating.

One tip I have is to try a meal dispenser like the Egg-Cersizer, which makes cats work a bit to get their food.

u/lovemeloveher · 7 pointsr/cats

It's a Catit Design Senses Super Roller Circuit Toy. I got one of these for my mom's kitten a few years back, she still loves it.

u/totabbykawaii · 7 pointsr/CatTaps

I watched a video of your fountain and it sounds really quiet. Does yours sound like this or is it much louder? If it's louder, it could be motor issues on the pump.

This is the fountain we bought, we bought the 40 oz version but it doesn't look like they make them anymore. The 70 oz version might be overkill if you have just one cat, but I can vouch that the motor on the pump is quiet and doesn't seem to bother our cats and is too heavy for them to move.

u/bobbyjellybean · 7 pointsr/Advice

Get the cat some self stimulating toys like this which might help, especially if you put catnip on it. But that's no substitute for human interaction and the kitty might just have a higher need for socialization. My cat is 13 years old and she still whines when we close a door and she can't see us!

Having a roommate though, this might be a situation where you do need to shut the cat in the room if it's bothering them. As long as kitty has food, water, and a litter box, it's maybe not ideal but it's the considerate thing to do.

u/alkaliphiles · 7 pointsr/cats

My girlfriend's two cats go ballistic if there isn't food available at all times.

My cat eats til she pukes, too. To try and prevent that, we bought two puzzle feeders. My cat also tends to harass us until we go with her to monitor her eating.

Since we got the puzzle feeders, our cats eat a lot less food overall. But mine still needs a chaperone.

u/QThirtytwo · 6 pointsr/Cinderblock

This is what worked for us. It really slows down their eating so they don’t stuff themselves. And my lazy fat one is too lazy to dig out more than she needs so she got to a healthy weight pretty fast. Also, we give them a can of wet food at night.

u/Brady_scorned · 6 pointsr/Dogtraining

We use a litter box with a lid. It's the "booda", it think the dog is too scared of the lid to get too far into it and the cat seems happy I have the privacy.

Need a thermobed!

u/[deleted] · 6 pointsr/Pets

I adopted both my cats. My older one was 5 when I got him and fully declawed in all four paws. I wish he wasn't.

I got my other cat at 8 weeks and decided not to declaw her. It's been fine. She loves this kind of scratcher so much that I didn't even have to train her on it. The only issues I've had are some scratches on my hands when I play with her or when she rides around on my back (as she loves to do...in fact she's sitting there now) and she's taken to using one of my dressers as a scratching board. But, frankly, that's my fault because I don't mind either the scratches or the damage the dresser, so I don't trim her claws and I haven't trained her not to use the dresser. And any scratches on me are accidental--she does truly seem to try to avoid scratching me. She knows that no (thick) clothing on my back means she has to retract her claws while she rides around, otherwise she loses back-riding privileges.

Also, when I did care about trimming her claws it was super easy. Just get her used to being trimmed young and she'll probably be totally fine with it.

Additionally, I feel better knowing she has claws in case she ever accidentally gets outside (knock on wood). I don't want to leave my cats defenseless.

As for the kids, at some point they need to learn that some cats have claws. I mean, obviously try not to let her scratch, but explain to them that she's pointy and she can accidentally hurt them. I don't think that's unreasonable, especially if we're not talking about kids that live with you.

Ninja edit: Also, there are sooo many alternatives to declawing these days. Claw caps, different trimming systems, etc. It just seems unnecessary.

u/EntropicTempest · 6 pointsr/needadvice

Please don't declaw your cat. If you decide that you cannot have a cat unless it's declawed, then don't get a cat. Even if you plan to keep it indoors, you're pretty much cutting off part of their finger. I have two adult cats in a 750 square foot apartment. Just get a cat tower and a scratching post like this, and your cat won't scratch up your furniture as long as you train them what's OK to scratch and whats not. Don't. Declaw.

Cats are pretty low maintenance and inexpensive. I would recommend avoiding clay based litters, as those tend to kick up a lot of dust when pouring and when the cat is scratching around in it, and it's bad to breathe in for both you and the cat. Food can be pricey if you want to get what's best, but it's still pretty cheap when compared to a dog. I spend $30 on a big bag of blue diamond that lasts for about 6 weeks for two adult cats. I get a pellet based litter that also uses a pad for urine and it costs about another $20 every 6 weeks.

So other than the upfront costs of getting the cat its shots and buying those toys/scratch posts, cats are pretty cheap.

As for gender, it does not matter so much. Cats each have their own personality and it really just depends. Males sometimes have issues with spraying, but if you get them fixed early on it's almost always not a problem. I would do some research on different cat breeds, as they each have their own traits that tend to run through the breed that affect their personality.

I haven't done links here before, so fingers crossed this works!

We bought this one from Amazon and it's been great. We've got 3 cats, 2 small dogs, and a parrot who all drink from this. (The parrot doesn't have to, but prefers this to water at his cage.) I fill it up about every other day, and thoroughly clean it once a month.

Every night as I use the bathroom I run the water in the bathtub for a bit so my cats can have a drink from the faucet. They love it. Would recommend this to anyone who doesn't have a dedicated cat fountain.

EDIT: This is the fountain I personally own though, would also recommend. Keep your kitties hydrated

u/Turtle_Sensei · 6 pointsr/Pets

Get them to a vet for a checkup, and then yes get better food. But if they're overweight and have been on supermarket kibble they've likely got some health issues. Also, keeping something that smells like the grandmother around for them will help them transition into you and your hubby and dog moving into their home and her being gone. Feliway may also be a good idea to get as well.

And exercise them! I got this for my cats and they adore it: https://www.amazon.com/Petstages-Tower-Tracks-Track-Interactive/dp/B00DT2WL26/ref=sr_1_3?keywords=cat+ball+tower+toy&qid=1556837834&s=gateway&sr=8-3

They play with it for a long time! And there's also a laser thing you can get that moves without you having to do anything but turn it on, that way if you don't have time to play, or aren't feeling well, they still get their exercise! Cats also love bubbles and they make Catnip bubbles!

Lastly, if you'd like I can knit you a toy for them and send it your way. Shouldn't cost me too much to ship. (I'm offering to send it for free) I make Pokeball cat toys, F-Bomb cat toys, and little knitted mice. While they're safe for cats, as with any toy with parts than can be possibly digested, I advise you to monitor the pet when they're playing with them. You can see what they look like here: https://www.etsy.com/shop/KleineMouskin

If you want me to send you one for them, shoot me a pm!

I bought this one. It can be completely disassembled and it's mostly ceramic except for the pump so it's easy to clean. You do have to clean it once a week but it's like doing a few dishes.

u/idiotsonfire · 5 pointsr/CatsBeingCats

I'd honestly recommend these. They're more or less one size fits all, and they are very, very good at removing a lot of hair, but not quite as much as say, a Furminator brush.

For a fussy cat that doesn't like brushing, these are the best though.

If she's on dry food: toys that you can put food into. For an overweight cat, sometimes play to eat is the only play they want to do, initially (you might find this changes as she loses weight). I literally bought something like this for mine and it really helped to get her just doing a little bit more moving and interacting and little less sitting on her ass.

Secondly, weigh the food as much as you can. Doing it by the cup tends to mean you underestimate what you're feeding, even if you've got a cup with measuring marks on.

Thirdly, for motivation, a weigh in and measure her stomach size every month with a tape measure. Sometimes, it comes off their waist more noticeably than it comes off their weight. Stick it in your calendar. Get her a little (non food!) treat if you both do well. Sometimes it really helps to have goals, even if it's just "if she weighs less two months in a row, she gets a new ball".

u/lithelylove · 5 pointsr/Pets

Congratulations on a new cat! This is going to be long, but trust me, it'll be worth it.

Cats are simple and relatively cheap to take care of. They really just need six basic things to be happy on a daily basis.

  1. Quality food. Firstly, remember that cats are not omnivores like dogs. They are obligate carnivores which means they can't survive if they don't eat meat. Do not try to put them on vegan diets, and try to avoid feeding them too much grain. Don't be too quick to grab the cheapest food you can find because cheap pet food have low quality ingredients and lots of filler. Experts say that feeding cheap food to pets is the human equivalent of eating McDonald's every meal of the day. When it comes to feeding them human food, google "what human food can cats eat" and you'll get plenty of information. Also note that almost all cats are lactose intolerant. Giving them bowl-fulls of milk or cream can get very detrimental. Of course, no chocolate, ever!
  2. Clean water. Surprisingly large amount of people don't know that pets require clean water too. Whatever water is fit for humans is what you should be giving your cat.
  3. Scratcher or a cat tree. Ideally, you'd provide a multi-tiered cat tree with beds and scratching posts included so that it can be a one stop relief station for your cat. That's where they can destress by scratching, stimulate by play and exercise, and relax by sleeping. This is a really good example of an all-in-one tree. But if you want to opt for a simple scratcher, it would suffice as long as you provide alternatives for their other needs.
  4. Regularly cleaned litter box. Get a low dust litter to reduce the risk of allergies for both you and your cat. I prefer natural wood or walnut based litter because it smell less of chemicals and are environmentally friendly, but that's up to you. There are so many kinds of litter out there, but I recommend the clumping type. As for the size, the litter box should be big enough for your cat to comfortably turn around in.
  5. 10 minutes of interactive play time with you. Most cats just need 10 minutes of active playtime and they're good to go. You'll know when they had enough play because they'll let you know. The best toys are wand toys that mimic birds or mice. Avoid giving cats strings, ribbons, or yarn because even though cats LOVE to play with those, those are easily snapped apart by teeth and cats tend to swallow them. Opt for something like the cat dancer toy instead if your cat shows a strong preference towards ribbony toys. Watch some videos about how to pet or play with cats because they are very different from dogs! (Many people don’t realise this.) You’ll start to figure to out what works best as you get to know your new feline family member better.
  6. Regular grooming. This includes trimming their nails, brushing their fur, brushing their teeth, and the occasional trip to a professional groomer. Nails need to be trimmed for both the human's and the cat's safety. Just make sure you learn how to trim them by watching YouTube videos. I recommend nail scissors over other types. Shorthair cats can go with brushing once a week, but longhair cats have to brushed at the minimum once every 2 to 3 days to avoid matting and vomiting up furballs from ingesting too much loose fur while grooming themselves. Matting is when the fur gets tangled up so bad that it becomes a hard ball of fur that have to be removed by cutting or shaving. It can get painful for the cat so it's best practice to brush them as often as possible. Recommended brushes are slicker brushes and furminator brushes when trying to take out matts. As for their oral health, majority of pet owners aren't aware that cats (and dogs) actually do need to get their teeth brushed every single day even if you get dental cleanings (which are done under full anaesthesia) at the vet annually. Brushing can extend the amount of time between each full dental cleaning and also, reduce the risk of them losing their teeth as they get older. Works just like humans. You can use pet toothpaste and baby toothbrushes or specially made pet toothbrushes to do this. You can find everything you need at your local pet supply store.

And of course, collar tags and yearly vet visits are always recommended for long term benefits.

As for safety, most cat experts say cats do best as strictly indoor pets but a lot of owners prefer to let them come and go as they please. I’m a firm believer in keeping mine indoors so I keep windows and doors closed at all times. If they want to go outside, I'll accompany them with a cat harness.

Phew, hope you made it all the way to the end. Good luck with your new pet!

In a bit of a rush, but some quick tips:

You might need to reintroduce to the cats. This site was a lifesaver when I adopted my second cat:

My cat has had this litter box for about a year and a half and I only have to vacuum once a week or every other week. The stairs help get the litter off his feet and compared to the mess of the standard litter boxes i say it helps considerably.

u/TheBlowersDaughter23 · 4 pointsr/AskMen

We have this litterbox and it works well! It doesn't store a whole month's worth of poop like it advertises in the little slot, but we have a litter genie and clear that spot out every week. No smell, and the cat doesn't mind it.

u/orangething · 4 pointsr/breakingmom

It's this! So basically it's got a disposable tray with crystals that you swap out once a month. You plug it in, the cat goes, it waits about 20 mins and then auto scoops all the waste into a little out of sight area. Now, I can't speak to how the replacement process smells but I don't smell it as I walk by and I don't have litter getting into the floor anymore (our cat is a messy lil thing). There's a lid for it if you are concerned though.

I was pregnant and trying to keep away from the litter box and found that it rarely got cared for. I struggle to fit it into my day too so though it's an expensive up front cost, I absolutely feel like it was money well spent at this point.

u/rwatkinsGA · 4 pointsr/Pets

We bought a litter additive for our cat in a similar situation. She's in a small room by herself with this in her litterbox and so far, so good.

Not sure the exact one we have as my brother was the one who purchased it, can look when I get home. Ours allows you to schedule 1-3 times per day (custom times for each) and customizable amounts in increments of a quarter of a cup per feeding. Its got a fairly big tank of food that probably holds 2-3 weeks worth. EDIT: looks like it might be this one: www.amazon.com/LeBistro-Portion-Control-Automatic-pounds/dp/B0016BVY2U.

We did have to super glue a small plastic cover to it to make the hole where the food comes thin enough that he couldn't stick his paw up it and force food out.

An addendum (in thought) to /u/Spikekuji's post - a heated pet bed (here's an example of one on amazon; and here's an example of just a heated mat - you could put this anywhere) is awesome for when you aren't around during the day. I have two, and both of my sphynxes are big fans of them.

My cat never drank water from a bowl, no matter how many different materials/shapes/places/temperatures that we tried to encourage her. But she loves her water fountain and drinks from it daily. It does get annoying to have to wash, and you'll probably have to do it more frequently with 3 cats, but it's worth it.

u/googlefeelinglucky · 4 pointsr/Catswithjobs

They have them on Amazon for anyone interested.

I have to say, I wish the base was plastic instead on cardboard. One of my cats likes shredding cardboard so that thing would be toast within a week or two in my house :(

u/MacTaker · 4 pointsr/cats

But we spent a lot on toys for him! Cool toys and all, like this turntable but he likes to steal, I need to face it, he just has the eeeeevils...

u/CorgisAndCheese · 4 pointsr/bengalcats

It's like a hamster wheel for cats, bengals tend to love them. And you don't have to get a second bengal, a second cat of any breed would probably be good. You also don't have to get a second cat lol.

Other than someone taking the cat, it's not more of a risk than other cats. I do think other cats being outdoor cats are too much of a risk for them as well. That said there are alternatives for letting a cat enjoy the outdoors without giving them free roam such as harness training them, having a catio for them, or a cat proof fenced in house (which is by far the most expensive and not doable without a ton of property surrounding the house but it is possible lol)

Here are some toy suggestions to help with your kittens energy:

this wand toy which I've seen make even the laziest cat chase after I don't know what it is about this toy specifically maybe it's the leather tassels or the fur thing but I've never not seen it drive a cat crazy.

This cat ball track things

This cat dancer toy with the wall attachment Trust me that the wall attachment is super important.

Really thick pony tail elastics Be sure to watch her and make sure she doesn't try eating one.

Plastic water bottle caps, Christmas ornaments, and bouncy balls are also great things for cats to bat around when they're a bit bored.

Also things for her to climb on, a small cat tree is always great.

Good luck! And do keep in mind that she'll be less energetic as she gets older.

u/Moarisa · 3 pointsr/AskVet

No medical advice re the vomiting (tech here, not a vet!) but some suggestions for pacing out meals. I've heard of people having success with putting a solid plastic ball in the bowl with the kibble. Kitty has to eat around it and can slow things down. Some special food bowls have raised areas or ridges inside so he will have to work a bit more to get the food.

There are several kinds of treat balls that you can put food in. They usually have some kind of adjustment you can make in hole size so the kibble comes out faster or slower. You can start the holes big while kitty gets used to it and gradually make them smaller for him.

You can also buy a variety of other food dispensing toys like the CatIt Digger which he will have to work at to get food out of.

I also have a cat who would gobble down everything in sight without a breath in between if given the chance and now use a treat ball and the digger to give him his breakfast every day.

u/0xB0BAFE77 · 3 pointsr/Rabbits

DON'T TAKE A DREMEL TO YOUR RABBIT'S PAWS.

That's messed up. You would never use an industrial sized grinder to trim your finger nails. Why? Because it's not what they're made for and it's dangerous. Just like a dremel isn't meant for grinding down rabbit nails. One jerk and you can seriously injure the bunny or even yourself.

I've only been a rabbit owner for a short time (and it's not even my rabbit. It's my gf's). Even though she does the clipping most of the time, I still took 10 whole minutes to learn the right way of how to cut my gf's rabbit's toe nails. u/NotClever · 3 pointsr/funny

I have this PetSafe one. It's kindof infomercially, but it works quite well. I've never had the rake get stuck or mess up or anything. There is kindof a weird thing where the little lid that covers up the poop-holding compartment sometimes will get stuck open, but I can't figure out if that's a design flaw or if my toddlers are messing with it. It could even be the cat messing with it (he likes to clean his paws after using the litter box by rubbing them really hard on the sides of the box). Also, it doesn't make a big difference because the silica gel litter takes care of the odor well enough that I don't notice any difference in that.

The only catch is that you must use silica gel litter for it to work (clumping litters will fuck up the rake, I think). And the only issue with that is that stepping on tracked-out silica gel litter is one step below stepping on Legos. Otherwise, it contains odor very well.

On that note, their official refills are basically just cardboard boxes filled with silica gel litter (and lined with a liquid-impermeable material). I bought the reusable plastic liner along with the official litter packs and it's worked great. I initially was buying a different silica gel litter in larger bulk quantities to save a little money over using their official refills, but I never found a source that was that much cheaper than the official refills, and the convenience of (1) having the refills be measured out to a good amount to just dump in the box and go and (2) setting them up on Amazon Prime subscription is worth the premium to me.

u/WorseThanHipster · 3 pointsr/CatsAreAssholes

We had house pooping problems with both our cats, and we got one of these litter boxes. The cats loved them more than their old clay so much they never pooped in the house again! And it uses these blue crystals which are actually desiccant. Keeps the smell waaay down, and the best part is NO POOP/PEE DUST when you’re cleaning.

The litter refills last quite a while so we end up spending about the same amount on litter as before.

u/fancytalk · 3 pointsr/aww

Have you tried cat attractant (like this) in the litter? The rescue people gave us some to put in the box when we adopted our cat, they said it helps prevent accidents. I'm not really sure if it made a difference for our cat but it's something to try if you haven't already.

u/kilbasar · 3 pointsr/pics

My tabby is insanely pushy and vocal about getting food, and was really cutting into my slumber/sanity. I know it's possible to train cats to not do that, but good luck with that. The only real solution I know of is auto-feeders. Most of them suck and can easily be broken into by a smart/hungry cat, but there are a few good ones.

If you use dry food, get the Bistro. My girl is diabetic and can only do wet food, so I use the Qpets. Nearly every other feeder is defective in one way or another, but these two are great. Either way, just make sure the feeder itself is secured (I velcro to a wall).

After a while they'll learn that they get fed at precisely X o'clock by the robot, no matter how much they meow at the human, and mostly stop meowing.

u/Blitzsturm · 3 pointsr/Omaha

I'd be slightly cautious giving strangers from the internet full access to your home. I could tell you I or many other strangers would be happy to help someone out in need but it's hard to filter out the potential a-holes. If you have someone do it for you make sure you have their ID information and maybe some references.

This place is fairly close to where you live and runs about $13.75+ per day. There are probably also some competing services if you shop around.

Also, depending on exactly how long you'll be gone you can look into an automatic cat feeder, I have one myself that feeds my cat exact amounts twice a day as well as a long lasting water supply. The only thing to be cautions of is depending on how long you'll be gone your cat may have some anxiety about the lack of interaction. When I was out of the country for about 3 weeks I had a friend of mine swing in as often as he could to maintain a presence which made a big difference.

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B001NIZAH6?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share I think you could find it at PetSmart too

This is a great fountain because you can easily change how many spouts of water there are, a cat can either drink from the basin or lap up the streaming water (which my boys love to do) It is VERY easy to clean and take apart, you could even put most of it in the dishwasher if you wanted to. I've never had an issue w it causing more acne w my youngest cat, who is prone to get clusters on his chin since he doesn't really clean himself v well. He had more of it when I was just using ceramic bowls as water dishes actually.

As far as the acne on the chin, if your cat can't groom there and it seem to be bothering him, there are wipes and things you can get to help keep clean.

Please, for all that is right and holy in the universe, get a covered litter box. (Not just for the scatter, but for the sight and smell as well)

u/Hameen · 3 pointsr/INEEEEDIT

I had something similar and it worked okay. It really wasn't tall enough for them so they always ended up going in the same spot with their head poking out the top hole. When they were done they would launch themselves out like a rocket spraying litter EVERYWHERE. Maybe if our cats weren't spazzes and daintily climbed out it would have worked better.

What I ended up doing was chucking those and getting [this litter box]
(https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B003RQVGKC/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&psc=1) (I'm sure any one with a front flap would do just as well) and I already had purchased these mats. I put the boxes in the corners of our spare rooms pointing at a wall with a foot or so of space between the box and the wall. This stopped them from running out of the box into the room making a mess and forced them to exit the box a little slower. It still doesn't catch ALL the litter, but the amount sprayed/tracked all over the room has significantly decreased.

u/Truffles326 · 3 pointsr/gifs

https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B0056ASTES. This is what I have for second one. It easily pulls apart into 2 parts and has relatively cheap filters. Top rack of dishwasher obviously (like all plastics).

It's very quiet compared to most because no splashing. I only notice/hear it when the water is low, and you need to fill it. I have to put a rag under my old one, but this one doesn't make as big of a mess either because they drink out of top portion which catches their spit/drips in to the bottom reservoir.

Edit: I ordered the brushes with it because pump is cleanable but because filter - I haven't seen it get dirty.

I also have this cat tree and ours love it. But we do have small cats.

Our tripod cat absolutely loves the basket thingy, and it's her main sleeping place, however our other cat who is slightly bigger doesn't like it. They both enjoy perching on the middle level, and our bigger cat loves the very top perch.

I would say it's good if you have medium/small cats but if you have huge boys parts will be a squeeze.

Here it is for anyone looking for it.

u/armaticon · 3 pointsr/aww

hey! I'm not u/BakingSoda1990 but I had a cat a few years ago that was a little overweight. She got down to a healthy weight when I transitioned her over to wet food instead of dry. Also getting her on a morning/evening feeding schedule seemed to help.

She passed away from old age (RIP, she was an awesome old lady) - so I adopted 2 new cats when I was ready. One of them prefers her kibble but I can get her to eat a little bit of the canned by microwaving it and mixing in some low sodium chicken broth. She's mostly on dry food now, but it is what it is.

It's ultimately your choice and u/BakingSoda1990 is definitely more knowledgeable but I wanted to add my two-cents. :) good luck!

also don't mean to spam you with links, but my cats LOVE this toy and I think it can easily be found at Petco or Petsmart:

Those are some big cats you got there! xD I bought this string stick toy and it's still in good condition as of now. I don't usually play with the ones with the little mouse on them because the strings are usually fragile but this works.

I don't play with the ones with the feathers in them as well because the feathers tend to fall all over the place and can get a bit messy.

Something like that would be my reccomendation too, this is the one I have. The ball lights up when they play with it!

u/the_real_penny · 3 pointsr/aww

Yup! It has a ball in it that can light up. I love it because it keeps the cats busy and the dogs can't eat the ball. The track also comes apart so you can change up the shape if you want.

I actually ended up with this one after lots of agonizing: http://www.amazon.com/PetSafe-Drinkwell-Ceramic-Pagoda-Fountain/dp/B00BD3UN8C/ Do you know there are no less than two websites devoted entirely to comparing cat fountains?

u/impy695 · 2 pointsr/cats

Whatever you get, go for a ceramic or metal one. Theyre easier to clean than plastic, and last longer. I put my ceramic one in the dishwasher.

You do have to clean it regularly every 1 to 2 weeks, so get one with less awkward shaped pieces to clean.

I'm pretty sure all of them have this, but make sure it uses a good filter.

Honestly cat fountains are awesome and every owner should get one. Cats that eat dry food usually do not get enough water with a normal bowl since they instinctually avoid drinking from standing water (also, avoid putting the water next to their food). Also, you have to fill it up less! It's only a minute at most every day, but it's nice not having to worry about it.

Edit: I originally had this one (or one like it) and you can see from my recommendations above the issues I had with it https://www.chewy.com/drinkwell-platinum-pet-fountain-13/dp/48102?utm_source=google-product&utm_medium=cpc&utm_campaign=hg&utm_content=Drinkwell&utm_term=&gclid=Cj0KCQjwoKzsBRC5ARIsAITcwXGTnem57Axg6L0moqegE58nIB1v2jwT6YttNSD-ryPTYB7L0l9PSxQaAm8TEALw_wcB

u/Runawaii · 2 pointsr/Pets

This fountain might be a good option if you want something smaller. I use the 168 Oz. one for my two cat's but I admit I do have to dump a lot when it get's cleaned. It's only 70oz and according to the PDF I found for disassembly the carbon filter comes AFTER the pump. It also uses the same pump as the 168 oz model. I haven't used it but it has a lot of reviews and Drinkwell's have been a solid product in my experience.

u/MagneticFlea · 2 pointsr/cats

My cat did this - making up for lost time when her teeth were too sore to eat.

We had to switch to wet food for half of her diet and put the dry food in a game that slows her eating (there are several devices, we used this)

u/LoveaBook · 2 pointsr/CatAdvice

Try a free-feeding puzzle feeder. My cat got to a chonking 16 pounds (which is large for her size). We purchased a Catit puzzle feeder and she lost the weight in a few months. And she’s maintained herself at a perfect (for her) weight of 8.5 lbs for over 2 years now. Because my girl is a natural borne ✨Diva✨ my husband was against it at first, but it’s cheap, so...what’s to lose? I spent a couple minutes poking my fingers in and knocking bits down to show her the idea and she took to it like a fish to water. We now have a second one, of a different style and different maker, that we put elsewhere in the house and fill with a different flavor/type of food. Both my cats love them. The idea is to prevent them from easily eating too much when bored and to make eating more stimulating, like a hunt.

They can eat as much as they want for as long as they want, but they have to earn every last kibble of it. My (former) fat cat seemed to live in front of the feeder at first - knocking food down most of her waking hours. But now it’s just a few times a day, and maybe a single tablespoon’s worth of food at a time.

This is another Catit puzzle feeder. They also have a variety of puzzle feeder toys - if you’re OK with bits of kibble all over the house. This is just one example.

(We actually just had to put our former chonker on a special renal diet. (She’s 18). We picked her favorite puzzle feeder and changed just it to the new, specialty food and left the normal food in the other. My two girls haven’t had a stitch of trouble telling which is which. I think the only downside - as they see it - is that they’ve lost the diversity of two feeders. (According to the stuff I’ve read, they recommend multiple feeders spaced around the house to engage their instinct to search out food.) But I’ll be damned if I’m going to have multiples for each type of food spaced around the house. After all, there’s only so much room in my house.)

u/Kaalisti · 2 pointsr/cats

If you are feeding dry food, the cat may be eating too fast. Try something like this:
https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B015P13QMM/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o08_s02?ie=UTF8&psc=1 Which also makes eating fun for them. If you are feeding wet, feed less but more frequently.

Technically you can eat ants, but the Formic Acid will be bitter, and the ant can bite the tongue/mouth/esophagus. I second the suggestion you fix the ant problem.

Try providing wheat grass inside, near their bowls, so they won't eat random possibly poisonous plants outside. If you have a health food store nearby, they often sell little pint-size patches for about $2.

Try covered cat litter boxes. Bunnies can use cat pans, and covered litter boxes are basically a cat pan with a cover. Take a look at this section of the litter box wiki article we wrote up.

edit:// just realized you said you wanted a lowered entrance. haha. you can always do some DIY and cut out part of a box to make your own entryway. :) it's only plastic.

edit 2:// looked on amazon real quickly, what about this? and bunnies like to hop, so you shouldn't really need to worry about non-lowered edges until your bun is old. :)

u/kittensinadumpster · 2 pointsr/Pets

A booda dome. I have a couple and I love them for reduced litter tracking.

u/SunbathingJackdaw · 2 pointsr/cats

A second kitten is a great idea. I see that you've got a scratcher covered, so you might also consider a nice claw trimmer (this is my favorite).

Note that if you do get a second cat, opposite-sex pairs actually work best together in terms of companionship. Two females are more likely to be territorial with each other.

u/nicgeorgie · 2 pointsr/Rabbits

I trim my buns nails once a month. One has black nails and shinning a light does help a lot. Occasionally I have gotten his quick and he jumps but it’s not the end of the world, it’s a similar sensation to when you nip your cuticle or pull a hang nail, hurts for a split second and then it’s over.

I know it is controversial but I also clip my buns nails with them on their back in between my legs. It is the only way I can safely and quickly get their nails cut and check their teeth without risking injury to them or myself.
These are the nail cutters I use, and I HIGHLY recommend them.

I also do all of this in a room they are unfamiliar with (my bathroom) so they tend to stay close to me and not want to explore as it’s new territory.

u/a_small_blue_pebble · 2 pointsr/VetTech

u/Amonette2012 · 2 pointsr/PetAdvice

Cats HATE to have their dignity compromised. They usually shake it off within a few days but it injures their very sensitive cat pride.

Hissing is not surprising here, but you mentioned her hooking you. Do you clip your cats? If not, I recommend training them for this. It takes some time. With my two, I've made it a group project. Every time I complete a successful clipping session with either cat (and the barrier for entry here is low - as long as I got at least one claw clipped it counts as a success) they both get a treat. To do this I use some clippers like this:

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0002RJM8C/ref=oh_aui_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1

there are lots of varieties but get one with a guard so you don't cut too much.

Assuming you are right handed like me (if not reverse instructions), take the cat by the scruff of the neck with your right hand and pick them up with your left and hold them firmly against your body on top of a counter top of some sort that supports their legs (we do this over the sink in our powder room). Gripping the cat to your body on the left, with your elbow crooked around their butt to keep them in, separate a paw and attempt to clip one claw.

If this is obvious suicide, start by wrapping the cat in a towel like a furious burrito and then gripping her under your arm. They will not like this and may well hiss and swear at you in cat. Make it very clear that they are NOT getting away until at least one claw has been clipped, then as soon as they indicate that they really are going to literally m*therfucking murder you in your sleep and start going psycho on you, go 'good cat!!' and throw treats at them.

Each time you do this it will build trust and help make your cat less lethal.

u/Seal_Point_Lop · 2 pointsr/Rabbits

  1. he needs to clean that box 1 to 2 times daily. Cats won't use dirty boxes. Having a second box may help but must be cleaned daily. Or get an automatic litter box cleaner

  2. Half water half vinger solution in a spray bottle will remove smells from fabric and carpet. Spray the house down. It will smell like vinegar until it dries. Then no smell.

  3. Get a cheap couch or futon and a sofa cover if they pee on the cover you can put it in the washing machine with any laundry detergent and a half a cup of vinegar.

  4. Spay and neutering cats can reduce kitty smell because makes have a habit of marking their territory.

  5. Kitty might have a urinary tract infection. Will pee everywhere until treated.

  6. Cat litter deodorizer can help out tremendously.

Right off the top of my head, maybe try using a litter attractant? Read through the reviews, and there are some other good tips from people with similar behavioral problems.

u/tucker_baby13 · 2 pointsr/Pets

First thing you're gonna hear on this sub is get the boys checked by a vet. With cats urination issues are sometimes symptoms of very serious and sometimes fatal conditions. What you're also gonna wanna do is:

  1. Make sure the litter box is frequently scooped (at least once a day). And the entire box should be emptied and refilled fresh at least every few weeks. The standard rule for the number of litter boxes required is the number of cats plus one. So in an ideal world they should have access to 3 litter boxes. If that's not gonna happen and they just have the one then it needs to be scooped VERY frequently. Try and position the litter box near a problem area. It can be moved once the problem has been resolved but it will make the retraining easier. You can add Litter Attract to the litter box and that will make it more tempting for them to use it.

  2. Cats will pee in the same area. The spots they have peed in need to be cleaned with an enzymatic cleaner like Natures Miracle. Nothing else will work. Even if it looks clean and smells clean to you, the cats will still smell it.

  3. If the cats are causing a ruckus at night then they need to be played with more. Get some interactive toys like the wands and play with them until they pant. A tired cat is a good cat.

  4. Many people on this sub recommend and use feline pheromone spray/diffusers/collars. Feliway is the top brand. It can help problem cats calm down and be more comfortable.

I'd also recommend you or your parents watch some videos on youtube by Jackson Galaxy aka the Cat Whisperer. This guy knows his stuff. Here's a few videos to get started:

She might have a UTI, and is associating the litter box with her pain. Take her to the vet for confirmation.

Clean the area with an enzyme cleaner. Add another litter box as /u/ajru222 suggested. You can also add a litter attractant.

u/ilikekittens · 2 pointsr/kittens

Maybe for the water try setting a faucet to a drip or light stream and see if she will drink that. Most cats love drinking out of the faucet, so maybe she will too.

One time when my cat was sick she wouldn't drink at all, and she hates wet food so we had a tough time. But we threw some of her treats that she really liked in a bowl of water and it sort of forced her to get some water in the process.

Also, I don't know how well it works, but there's stuff you can put in the litter box that is supposed to help cats use it. Something like this. Or maybe even just a different kind of litter might help. Oh, or maybe special bad-cat litter.

u/FF0000it · 2 pointsr/StLouis

Well, you can go through the regular stuff and see if it helps:

Dr. Elseys Cat Attract
Feliway
Breeze Hard Clay Litter Box System

u/taleofzero · 2 pointsr/SRSPets

My cat is also big at 15 lbs. He peed outside his covered litterbox for years. Then I switched him to an open litterbox, and since then he's peed in the box without incident. I think big cats just have a hard time using covered litter boxes. I have my open litterbox in our larger bathroom, which we don't really use much. It's a bit icky to have it in open view but less icky than cat pee everywhere.

I don't know how legit it is but Amazon sells cat litterbox attracting stuff.

u/smallspark · 2 pointsr/Pets

I'm a bit confused why you think I'm suggesting a litter box every few feet but OK, I get litter boxes and babies don't go together. I would suggest adding a second litter box next to the first one if you have room. Just to see if it helps.

  1. It has timers for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. (You can select, one, two or all three meals.)
  2. It has an option for a power supply (which i think you have to purchase separately)... and battery back up
  3. I would suggest keeping the bowl and the plastic part above where the food comes out clean. (I usually clean the plastic part above where the food comes out with an alcohol wipe. The reason for this is because it gets surprisingly dirty and i noticed one of my cats was getting some kitty acne above his eye. It cleared RIGHT up when i started keeping it clean about once a week. Same thing with the bowl part. I clean it about once a week with soap and water)

    I love this thing!

My two never did well with being taken to boarding so I've always left them at home alone anything < 7 days with a "nanny cam" to make sure they are doing okay.

I bought this one years ago and it works great, however i think it only supports 3 meals a day and might not fit your needs: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0016BVY2U/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&psc=1. I actually use it to feed them daily and just give them treats from time to time. I got them when I was still very busy and didn't have the time for a dog and liked never having to worry about missing a feeding.

I think to do this you really would want an automatic litter box though, I always set out an extra normal litter box in case the automatic one malfunctions but never really had any issues. I use a litter robot as their normal day to day box which never seems to have any issues.

Just Make sure they have enough to last several extra days and that you have someone that can in an emergency come check on them.

He is one of the most spoiled cats out there. He is my baby, and he knows it! I actually had to go onto disability for depression/anxiety/PTSD, and having him around was one of the things that helped me the most. I didn't even mean to get a cat, he just showed up one November day, cold, wet and hungry. Of course, once you feed a cat, you have a cat. At this point I'm getting help to get off of disability, which I would have done regardless of whether or not I had a cat, but he did make getting to this point easier. Once I've gotten a job and hits some of my major goals I'll be getting him one of these.

If you are thinking about an electric blanket, make sure it's approved by a nationally recognized testing agency, has a thermostat with adjustable heat settings, and has an internal temperature control to shut off the blanket if it gets too hot. I use an electric blanket on low heat sometimes when I am at home and my cats love it, but I don't feel comfortable leaving it on when I am not home. When I am not home, they have a heated kitty bed http://www.amazon.com/Thermo-Kitty-Heated-Cat-16-Inch-Sage/dp/B00176F9AM/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1382927540&sr=8-1&keywords=heated+cat+bed a self-warming kitty bed http://www.amazon.com/Lounge-Sleeper-Self-warming-16-Inch-20-Inch/dp/B003YIIJGM/ref=sr_1_8?ie=UTF8&qid=1382928358&sr=8-8&keywords=heated+cat+bed and a polar fleece blanket I made by sewing thinsulate fabric between 2 layers of polar fleece. Invest in a heated cat bed. We've recently been noticing our cat laying on the living room heat vent whenever the furnace kicks in. Bought one of these beds last night. Hopefully it'll be his new favourite spot to lie.

u/Lcatg · 2 pointsr/CatsInSinks

This brokered the peace in my house (I ended up getting two). They have a larger one that I have too that the rival cats now occasionally share. It was hard to watch the one cat purposely steal the older cats fav spot. Now they have one. Good luck!

We have the catit fountain and my cats love it. My little girl was putting her paws in it within minutes and our boy was terrified. For a while, he would get close and then hiss at it. My roommate’s cat has had fountains before so he started drinking from it immediately. I spent some time dipping my finger in it and letting our boy lick the water off. Now, my cats love it. They prefer to drink from the fountain more than a dish of water. I use it without the yellow center of the flower after some trial - my cats like being able to drink where the water bubbles in the center and from the streams down the petals.

My local shelter has larger water fountains that look more like these. If your cats really like faucets they may like this better. The Catit isn’t very loud/splashy.

This is unfortunately pretty pricey($65~) but it is the best fountain that my girlfriend and I have found. We got tired of buying $20 and $30 fountains and having them break after only a few months. This one has been going strong for well over a year now and it is as good as new.

There is a plastic version of it but I liked the idea of stainless over plastic as it won't hold tastes and is much more durable.

It is easy to maintain and the filters are not expensive. I would recommend buying the brush set for cleaning as plastic will grow some bacteria on it and the pump and tubing will need to be properly cleaned.

Weasley looks like he could be a cat model! He needs to be on tv selling me cat food! He's so handsome!

If your cat likes to drink out of the faucet I would recommend saving up for one of These it's how we stopped our cat from drinking from the faucet, and allowed us to actually turn it off lol. It's the stream of running water they are attracted to. Our Voltron loves it, he drinks way more water now also. It is by far the best thing we have bought our cat, Drinkwell has all sorts of different fountains that have running streams that range in price and material (ceramic/stainless steel/plastic), we decided stainless because it looks nice.

u/NotSuzyHomemaker · 2 pointsr/Random_Acts_Of_Amazon

A pet water fountain because it's stainless steel and therefore easier to clean and because it's healthier for the pets.

Update: based on SFTX's recommendation, I updated the water fountain on my wishlist to one that is less expensive, can be washed in the dishwasher, and holds more water. Sweet!

u/ZorbaTHut · 2 pointsr/aww

I've got this water fountain. It is definitely not big enough to sit in, but the middle part - where the pump is - is just held on to the bottom of the bowl by suction cups. If you bought that, plus a flat-bottomed bowl large enough for cats to sit in next to the tower, you could just suction-cup the tower assembly into the bowl.

u/scottyboy218 · 2 pointsr/therewasanattempt

I had that one. It got to be quite a nuisance to clean. This one is 100x better.

> ShutUpYou'reNotDyingThereIsFoodInYourBowl

My vet suggested I start feeding my dude with this egg toy that only dispenses the food when played with. Sebastian totally doesn't get it, and is just mega pissed and meowy at me all the time now, until I give him a pity scoop of food in a bowl.

u/unsafeword · 2 pointsr/CatAdvice

I like putting some dry food along with a few treats in a puzzle ball before bed. You can adjust the number of open gaps (and how far open they are) to make it so she might have to spend an hour getting everything out. I often hear my cat nudging it about early in the morning.

It sounds like she may still have a kittenish temperament. Is it also possible that she's just bored? Does she have various toys to play with when you're asleep? Do you play long enough to exhaust her in the evening?

u/heresyandpie · 2 pointsr/Rabbits

Is getting him a companion an option? Our rabbits have become very content getting affection from each other, instead of obsessively demanding it from us when we're not available.

Wild rabbits maintain a range of 3-10 acres and live in social groups. This is what they're hardwired to want, so making them live solitary lives in small cages, with limited opportunities to forage and explore mean that we have smart little creatures who are lonely, bored, and full of energy. Factor in their crepuscular natures, and it's really a marvel that anybody with a pet rabbit gets to sleep at all.

Try to increase his exercise during the day and provide more stimulation to mimic what he'd get in a more natural habitat.

More run time and more exploration of new areas and spaces (even just rooms he's unfamiliar with) can give him much needed stimulation.

Increase his forage opportunities: If he gets pellets, try feeding them in a puzzle toy ([like this]{http://www.amazon.com/PetSafe-Egg-Cersizer-Meal-Dispensing-Cat/dp/B003H44R5K/ref=sr_1_10?ie=UTF8&qid=1417559491&sr=8-10&keywords=kibble+dispensing+toy}) so that he has to exert himself to get them. Similarly, we'll sometimes crumple the end of a cardboard tube, put pellets in, and then stuff the other side with crumpled paper or hay.

Getting up and feeding him to make him quiet down will only teach him that if he makes enough noise, he'll get what he wants.

u/Foostering · 2 pointsr/aww

I tried treat balls similar to these:
meal ball
treat egg

He thought those were ok but he really loves when I put the treats somewhere he can put his whole arm in (I don't know why) like this:
mouse maze

He gets really into it and will dive bomb the maze and shove his arms as deep inside as he can. It slides around on the floor with him. The larger holes means some pieces come out very easily but enough get stuck/move around that he spends 20min+ trying to get every last piece out. He even uses his paws to cup pieces and lift them out.

Mine used to the same thing. When he was younger, he sprayed litter all the way across the kitchen floor once when he was doing his combination kitty dirtbiking and treasure bury. He's calmed down some since then, though still spends a long time burying. I have a combination litter mat in front of the box, and bought these, which helps a lot. There's still a little tracking because paws, but it's nowhere near the mess that it used to be.

I have a recommendation from a vet-student of mine: Purina Pro-Plan. It encompasses extremely high-quality ingredients, affordable prices and various flavors/specialty blends. The dry food or wet variant are both excellent for your kitty, but the dry food will be cheaper. I would use the wet food if the kitty doesn't adhere well to drinking water as the wet-food contains high amounts of water. If you have any other questions please don't hesitate to ask. Congratulations on becoming a kitty owner!

With one small litterbox and two cats inevitably they will be stepping on clumps as they pee unless you scoop at least 3 times per day. I assume you scoop when you vacuum but if not, you probably will need to.

There are litterboxes with high sides that aren't top-entry. Here is one well-reviewed unit. That's what I currently use now that I have only one cat. I did take the door off, though. Here's another one.

PetSafe Drinking Fountain

u/avaelyn · 2 pointsr/Random_Acts_Of_Amazon

It sounds like it isn't a need, but a drinking fountain for my cat. He won't drink water out of a regular bowl, instead he dumps over cups or drops in the bathtub or out of the toilet. Apparently, when none of these things are available, he will sometimes not drink. He got a bad urinary tract infection a few years back, and since we got him this, he will drink more water, which seems to help. We had one, but it broke. :(

One like this is preferred as he likes drinking running water from taps. But this one would also work.

u/penny_dreadful_mess · 2 pointsr/dogs

Have you thought about a water fountain? I got one because my dogs loves playing with her bowl but the fountain is almost impossible to tip. It's also helped some of her sloppy drinking habits, just because there is so much surface area for her the slop over (it is still on top of a yoga mat just in case). Also, the reason we got one is my friends cats have one and will only drink out of that. After being there a couple of hours, Soph doubled her water intake, so I got one straight away. I actually have the Big Dog one because I can't accurately judge sizes online and thought it couldn't be that big but it is massive! It solves to slop and tipping problem but unless Echo and Guinness are always drinking out of it, it might be a bit much (it is definitely too much for my 1 30 lb dog, haha)

This $25 cat water fountain is amazing. Holds about 1.5L of water and has a raised portion if so they dont have to bend over. My cats like to drink right where its running out.

My parents first got one for their cat because she somehow started crying for them to turn on the bathtub faucet so she could drink out of the stream. After my cats spent a few weeks at at their house they were refusing to drink out of a bowl at my apt anymore. They love the fuck out of this thing though. They freak out if its turned off lol.

but because I keep reading reviews about how they can choke on it, it makes me so nervous about any toy I plan on getting her!! Also, that's a great idea. I also was concerned about her falling over or knocking things over, but lying the scratch post sideways is a brilliant idea.

Thank you so much for the lengthy respond, it means a lot! I'll definitely be posting pictures in r/aww when I get the chance :D

My young kitty adored this toy. He would chase it and jump really high and just generally be very active. It was fun for both of us.

Now that he's a little older, he tends to chomp down on the end and refuse to let it go, which results in us going for a walk around the house like it's a leash (though he's leading, not me). Still fun, but less active.

u/SenorDing_Dong · 2 pointsr/StartledCats

Boop.

I also recommend this. The first time my cat played with one of these he spent about 15 minutes going crazy and then another 15 laying around panting.

u/gingysnap · 2 pointsr/Random_Acts_Of_Amazon

Do you have a shelter in your area? You might check to see if they have a little store, and if you can get some of the larger supplies (carriers, litter box, etc) there. Our shelter runs a store where they sell donated larger items that they don't need, and they're cheaper than buying them from a pet store.

Could also check Craig's List and such for things like a carrier!

Edit: Also, highly recommend one of these things! Both of my cats loved these as a kitten, and still love them now. Just don't leave it lying out when you're done playing with it, or the cat will drag it all over the house and chew the string to bits. Or at least, mine did :P

My girl enjoys the Catit Senses components. You can start out small and keep adding to it. She very often plays with this one by herself is one of the reasons I really like it.

The Katris modular System looks great and my cat absolutely loves hers! We have them staggered along the wall in my living room taking her up to the point where she can touch the ceiling if she wants. You would be surprised how much time your cat will spend going vertical and looking down on the world it might give you a break. My cat has a roller track that he can use autonomously. We don't tend to see him use it that often nowadays, but he does occasionally play with it in the mornings while he's waiting for us.

He also has a tall cat tree where he can sleep/watch out of the windows, and he often uses the windowsill in our study to watch for birds. He also has his pick of cardboard boxes scattered around the apartment and often chooses to play/sit/nap in them on his own.

We also have a tunnel feeder, and a treat ball -- both used to keep him occupied and thinking at meal times.

u/lostinkmart · 2 pointsr/SiberianCats

I second getting a larger litter box and brushes for fur. There are a ton of brushes on the market but we have Furminator, a wire brush, and another brush with metal teeth for main brushing. If your Sib has long fur then I highly recommend additional brushes that help prevent and/or remove mats. There’s even detangling spray that works great to help loosen tight mats. I also recommend getting some kitty wipes if your Sib has long fur because my kitten had poopy butt quite often.

As for toys, I found that when he was a kitten, he loved Da Bird, the Ripple Rug, and the Cat Senses circuit track. They were easily his favorite toys. Also anything with a feather or fur were (and still are) his favorites. And be prepared to play all the time! My Siberian is over 2 years old and still demands daily play time. As he got older he really got into these Trixie treat puzzles as well as this Meowijuana catnip.

One thing that surprised me the most about my Sib kitten is how much he could get into small spaces and cause trouble. We had to invest in some baby-proofing things like a baby gate and locks for cupboards.

We got this PetSafe Ceramic Fountain because one of our cats got a UTI and bladder stones.

It’s pricey AF, but worth it in our eyes. Our cats love drinking from it. They drink way more water now than they did when they just had bowls, which is keeping them both healthy (but especially the one who got the UTI). It’s also pretty easy to clean and has replaceable filters.

u/larry_pancake · 1 pointr/felinebehavior

Oh man, have I been there. One of my furballs was determined to pee out the side of the litterbox. Every. Single. Time. I fixed this by getting one of those dome-shaped litter boxes (like this: https://www.amazon.com/Booda-Dome-Cleanstep-Cat-Titanium/dp/B0002DH8L4) with a built-in stair case that leads into it. Now she has to walk inside the litter box in order to get to the litter, and she can't pee out the side.

If you don't suspect mobility problems, you might also try a litter box with a top-entry--enclosed on all sides, and the cat has to jump down into it to use it.

u/onomatopria · 1 pointr/CatAdvice

Oh, an igloo like this might be a good choice. You might have to clean the sides and steps every so often, but if it helps get the poop off the feet, it might be easier than your entire bathroom.

Even though your cat’s poops appear normal, it might be worth bringing it up the next time you see your vet. They might have food recommendations that would result in more solid cleaner poops.

u/david_edmeades · 1 pointr/cats

The Tidy Cat Breeze isn't covered but it has three high sides and uses large hard clay pellets that don't spread as easily as litter does.

Alternately, I use a big dome box with a staircase, but that might be too complicated.

Honestly? I put it in area where the dogs can't reach. It's facing the wall so the cat jumps on the lid, then goes in. It works for her, but wouldn't for all dogs.

When I lived with my roommate's cat she had good luck with using the Booda Litter Box. The entrance is slightly curved with stairs so it's harder for the dog to access.

Man's best friend

u/FakeWalterHenry · 1 pointr/cats

Not sure what your budget is, but there are a few suggestions I can make.

2. Make grooming easy with bribes! Healthy treats like Catty Shack or Greenies make Brush Time easier for both parties.

3. A lot of professional groomers charge an arm and a leg for cats (because of their arms and legs), so do the grooming yourself! You will need a Furminator, nail clippers, and cleansing wipes. Groom often, and invest in a scratching post.

4. As long as you are using a tool for grooming cats (i.e.: Furminator) you don't have to worry about overdoing it. Brush as thoroughly as you can, and stop when your brush starts coming out clean (or nearly free of loose hairs).

5. General tips: Buy the best food your budget allows. Preferably wet food, or a diet half wet food and half dry food. Go grain free, like Merrick and/or Soulistic. For a healthy, shiny coat I would recommend Pet Naturals' Daily Best; And to reduce hairballs, Hairball. Don't use hairball remedies that contain petroleum jelly, it will give your baby the runs :(

EDIT: Formatting

If you don't have cat nail clippers, I would suggest purchasing something like this. A normal human nail clipper will split the kitty's nails and hurt them.

u/XeroxSinner · 1 pointr/dogs

As a previous professional dog groomer for many years, these bad boys are my go to for almost every single dog ever. I have a pair of kitty nail trimmers for cats and tiny puppies, and a pair of large ones for the huge beasts but 98% of the time, I used the Safari small/medium clippers.

I also flip the guard out of the way because its inconvenient but its on there if you'd like it.

Also, ignore the PediPaws. Go to a hardware store and buy a $20 dremmel. It'll last you longer and do a better job of buffing out the nail edges. I actually have this model($40) because the battery lasts longer and I can crank it on high to power through larger, thicker nails.

I don't like the Miller's Forge one's that were posted previously as they're pretty large and heavy. I like slightly smaller but sharper clippers as I feel I can get more control.

Avoid guillotine style trimmers like the plague! They're worthless.

and it's fricken awesome. We got a plastic insert rather than buying the replacement cartridges. You don't really have to do anything for a month (just stir it once or twice) then you take everything out, dump it in a garbage bag, hose the insert off with the hose, and refill with litter and you're good to go.

It has yet to jam or break (unlike the stupid litter maids...I went through two of them and they were breaking every couple of weeks. Their bins also filled up like every 3 or 4 days).

u/kittlepoops · 1 pointr/Pets

You should take the cat to the vet to rule out the possibility of a UTI. My cat did the same thing (due to stress) and we were also told to buy this to attract the cat to the litter box. I would also make sure to clean the litter box every day or even get a second one to put in another room.

u/tehzephyrsong · 1 pointr/Pets

Truthfully, I've never used a litter attractant, I just know it's a thing that exists - the animal shelter I work at sells a small assortment of basic pet supplies, and litter attractant is one of the products we sell. I am pretty sure this is the one we sell. It's got a 4-star rating on Amazon and mostly positive reviews, although there's a vocal minority for whom the product didn't work. Seems like it would be worth a try, at least, and if it doesn't work, at least it's not terribly expensive, at $12 for 20 oz.

No worries, I'd be concerned too if it were my cat.

  2. This is my Polly-Wolly Big Bang Doodle Cat. She likes to climb on shoulders and perch there like a pirate, hence her name. I didn't post a picture of that, though, because I don't think the people in those photos would be okay with their picture on Reddit. I am also a fan of really stupid nicknames for animals. These are the Pictures of my kitties.
We had to put down our family cat, Noiro last year on March 6th. It was very heartbreaking as we had him for almost 15yrs.

I lost my own first pet, Coco on April 10th 2010. Since he was the first I had of my own & first to pass away (I gotten him when I worked at the pet store and he was around 5yrs old and very aggressive but we bonded lol).

I still cry over them sometimes. =/

Kitties would love this because they love scratching ... a lot. I know they'll enjoy the cardboard feel too, it'd be different from their cat posts carpet. (:

Dogs are not our whole life, but they make our lives whole. This is so so so true...well for animals. I've never had a dog yet. I want to wait till I have my own place because it's way more difficult to move around in rentals that allows dogs and I refuse to ever give up a pet so it's easier to not get a dog till I can 100% know I can keep it for their whole life. Dogs are not our whole life, but they make our lives whole.

I'm very sorry to hear about your baby. I went through something similar a few years ago. My standard poodle, Abner, was my first pet. We adopted him from the humane society and he was awesome, though a tad neurotic. We then adopted Nellie, another standard poodle who was similar to Abner but very hyper. We all grew up together and bonded and they saw me through so much, my parents divorce, my adopted brother coming home, moving multiple times, and the death of my great grandmother. No matter what happened, they were always there. Abner got old, and by the time he was 16 we decided he had to be put down. He was just getting too old and really had an issue moving around and living like we had wanted him to live. It was one of the hardest days of my life. Exactly one week later Nellie suddenly passed away. We found her vomiting blood and immediately took her to the vet. There were xrays and blood samples taken and the vet determined that she had eaten a string and perforated her intestines. There was nothing she could do. So we had to put her down as well. Losing two of my babies in a one week span was the most horrible thing I have ever had to go through.

I now have two dogs and two cats. Millie is a one year old boxer and drives me crazy on a daily basis. But I love her all the same. Sandy is a goldendoodle and my love. She is so calm and collected and seems to know exactly what your saying at all times. I call her my noodle. Malachy is a two year old Maine Coon Cat and also drives me crazy. She constantly knocks things over on my desk and scratches at my door. But again, I love her anyway and she always is there to cuddle with me when I need it. Moxie is my big baby. He is my first ever cat and litereally the cuddliest cat I have ever met. We adopted him from the same humane society where we adopted Abner. I also now volunteer there. He sleeps on my chest every night and is a bed hog. He has huge double paws and can't retract his claws so he clicks when he walks across the floor. I adore all of them.

My cats would really love this but because it's on the higher side of the price spectrum, they would also like this. Either one would provide a nice replacement to their now almost ripped to shreds scratcher. They love to play!!

My favorite pictures are the one her as a puppy, and one of her playing in the snow. It shows her at two different periods in her life, and having both of those pictures would provide a nice balance. Thank you for the lovely contest and I wish you nothing but the best. :]

Double-sided sticky tape on the blinds where she can reach (temporary). Rub delicious foods or catnip on the scratching post, and scatter treats on and around them. You should have MULTIPLE posts out for them- tall ones, "loungers", wide ones. What kind of scratching posts do you have right now? We have a mixture of the cardboard ones and rope and one of these carpet ones and our cat prefers the rope and mostly ignores the cardboard, but other people swear by the other kinds, so I think some cats just have a preference. This cat house is my cat's FAVORITE thing to claw on, but she also likes her lounger which can be easily mounted to the wall instead of we wanted to switch things up.

Our bulldog has always done the same. Recently I bought a fountain hardly expecting her to even try it out, but she loved it right away and the puddles on the floor have stopped. This one was very affordable and we can often find the filter replacements (both filters) at a PetCo, PetSmart, and if neither has them you can find them on Amazon!

The dual filter makes it so the kitty fur doesn't clog the motor. Even our Maine Coon doesn't clog it. My husband was taking it apart and cleaning it out once every two weeks, but that was when we had five cats. We only have three babies now and so maintenance (taking it apart) is about once a month.

It's the easiest to clean, and has lots of adjustability. Highly recommended.

u/scarletfeather4 · 1 pointr/tifu

My cat was super picky - fresh water every morning wasn't even good enough for him! I had a different fountain for a few years and recently got this one - stainless steel, and several options for water flow. https://www.amazon.com/PetSafe-Drinkwell-Multi-Pet-Stainless-Fountain/dp/B002SB91QS

It's super easy to take apart, just the cone and bowl, then the pump, spout, and tube connecting them. There's a filter around the pump to catch bigger things like fur and debris, and a charcoal filter just before the spout. It's pretty easy to clean, too.

As for hard water, my cat was spoiled - I would use filtered water from the fridge or gallon jugs at the grocery store.

u/hisshissmeow · 1 pointr/Pets

Okay, I have a few bits of advice for you.

First things first, I know it's hard to do emotionally, but you've got to stop leaving dry food out for your cats all day. I had a professor once who was a cat behaviorist and he put it like this, "People feed horses like they should feed cats, and cats like they should feed horses." Meaning that horses are grazers and should have food all day, not just at certain times of the day. On the opposing side, cats are hunters and should be fed only at certain times of day, and not have food out constantly (which should also help with weight management for your kitty darlings in general, since it's so important to keep them at a healthy weight as they get older anyway!) AND this SHOULD make your roomie's cat less interested in getting into your room-if he realizes there is no reward on the other side of the door.

ALSO-as far as your room-mate's cat goes, you're right, she shouldn't be giving him tastes. Not just for your sake and your kitties' sake, but for her own cat's sake as well. Human food can be bad for kitties for a number of reasons and it's safest just to keep him away from it. Not to mention, like you said, it teaches him bad manners.

Now here's the tough part. It may sound ridiculous but obviously you need to talk to your roomie about this situation, which is conflict and awkward and horrible to deal with, I know. I really recommend looking up and doing some reading today on how to talk to people while avoiding conflict. There's stuff all over the internet about it, and it's a bit too hard for me to explain. Basically, not only is it a good life skill to have, but obviously you want to be able to talk to her about it without her getting upset or feeling personally attacked. Because cats are like your children, and people can easily get offended when they feel their "parenting" is being criticized. So I really, really, really recommend looking up just some general communication tips so you can talk this over with her without it being awkward or confrontational.

Also, here are some things that MAY help if you mention when you're talking to her (disclaimer: I don't know her, so you may have to cherry-pick things here that you think would help convince her):
-I don't know if her cat is overweight, but I think it's important to mention that even though fat cats are adorable and wonderful and everything, it's really not in their best interests to be overweight; just as with humans. Having a healthier relationship with food will help keep him at a healthy weight and can really help him live longer, as well as save her money (him maintaining a healthy weight can really keep down diseases and other things that cost lots of money.)
-I'd suggest this cat get fed separately from his brother, and given a toy such as this one:

All of those are designed to slow a cat down while eating, while at the same time giving them the same mental stimulation that comes with play. This would make him eat slower, which is better for weight management as well as helping him to feel full and satisfied (if he ever does) and would keep him occupied enough for everyone else to finish eating before he could even think of getting to them. Not to mention it's fun for them! I don't know if you're willing to do this, but you could buy one of those options and give it to her as a gift, under the presumption that it is so he will leave his brother alone (I'm sure since they're both her children she probably doesn't like it when he bosses the brother around). It really is probably best to feed him alone, to prevent him from getting into anyone else's business and also would make life easier for your roomie, too.

Sorry about the book I just wrote.

u/Ultracoustic · 1 pointr/cats

How fast does your cat eat? My cat, who is just a month older than yours, will nearly inhale his food if we feed him from a bowl. He will swallow too much air doing this and rip the nastiest farts as all that air passes through him. We got him one of these to help him slow down. Now he spends 15-20 minutes eating instead of gobbling all his food in under a minute. His bad gas has disappeared.

As for the smelly poop, I mean.... It's poop. Poop stinks. Just like some people have really smelly poop, some cats just have really smelly poop. One of my in-law's cats poop stinks so bad it can clear a room. But their other two cat's poops stink just a normal amount. My cat's poop stinks pretty bad.

I had a cat that became like this because my father got so annoyed by her meows that he would feed her every time she meowed just to shut her up. It did not work, because she just became conditioned that meows = food, and so, by the end of her life, she was just constantly meowing.

If he is going to meow anyway, I would say that it is worth limiting his food. A few weeks of dramatics should eventually fade off as he learns that it will not work. Cats are very smart animals - smarter than dogs, in some ways. They are highly trainable.

You can also try one of the many devices on the market that require the cat to "work" for its food, e.g. this ball that lets out just a little food at a time. Start slowly cutting down on his food as you add more and more kibble or treats to this ball.

We taught our cat to do tricks. The first thing that we did was to teach him to sit, and so now he always does this (sits politely in front of his food bowl or by your chair) when he wants food.

It is also worth mentioning that dry food is actually more fattening and less healthy than canned food, so a partial switch may be in order.

Lastly, you can try switching to an automatic feeder, so that humans are removed almost entirely from the equation entirely. This may help to rewire his conditioning.

Anyhow, best of luck!

Edit: I want to add that skin conditions are pretty common in obese cats. They may not be able to reach all of their fur to keep it clean. Having unkempt fur and skin that he can't reach would be very, very uncomfortable for your cat, and may be part of what is making him so miserable. There are wipes on the market that would allow you to clean the affected area for him, or you could consider giving him a bath every once and a while (I know, I know, but it is possible to ease him into the process). You can also try giving him a little plain olive oil every once and a while. This is safe for cats, can be good for their skin and coats just like it is for humans, and they sometimes really like the flavor. My cat has some very dry and damaged paw pads from his prior life as a stray, and so we put this stuff on his paws every once and a while. He will also eat it mixed into his food.

In the morning, I give the 11 year old prescription Y/D dry cat food in a bowl because she has thyroid issues. I give the 5 year old Orijen in an Eggcersizer ball (http://www.amazon.com/PetSafe-Egg-Cersizer-Meal-Dispensing-Cat/dp/B003H44R5K) so it takes him longer to eat and gives the 11 year old time to finish her food or he steals it.

At night, I give them canned Y/D cat food and canned Weruva Paw Licken Chicken in spearate bowls.

The 11-year-old female was easy, she would eat anything I put in front of her. The 5-year-old kirkland addict, I had to transition to wet food slowly in this order over 2 months:

  1. Kirkland Free fed
  2. Kirkland 2 meals/day
  3. Kirkland mixed with Orijen 25%-75% over ~3 weeks.
  4. Orijen
  5. Orijen mixed with Fancy Feast Pate 25% to 75% over 1 week. I found he'd only eat Fancy feast, everything else he wouldn't touch.
  6. Fancy Feast and sometimes Friskies. Both Pate. He wouldn't eat the non-Pate types.
  7. After 1 month of this, I put down Weruva (Luckily at this point, he would just eat the Weruva and did not need mixing).

A couple days a month I will randomly give him Wellness or Nature's Variety to make sure he doesn't get picky.

The 11-year-old gets free-fed Y/D dry now because she's severely underweight. I transitioned her into eating it with coconut oil mixed in. Just enough that it keeps the 5-year-old from eating it but she'll still eat it.

You don't necessarily need to get the jumbo one (my cat is just a fattie) but I've lived in 3 different places with 3 different dogs, and none of them have tried to enter this litter box once I added the little door thingy to it.

u/letitburn22 · 1 pointr/cats

I second the closed litter box. I had two of these that come with a clear flap and a carbon filter. I upgraded to a Litter-Robot but kept these just in case because they really are great. This style might be rather big for a bathroom though.

Baking soda absolutely does wonders too. I also have some charcoal bags that I keep close by.

Air purifying plants are great too. Some require low light which makes them perfect for bathrooms. Just make sure they’re non toxic. Here’s a list of safe for pet plants. Just because they’re non toxic doesn’t mean they still can’t get a tummy ache if they eat a lot of the leaves. Just don’t let them munch on them :)

And of course the obvious. Just scooping every day, changing the litter and washing the boxes makes a huge difference!

u/rabidstoat · 1 pointr/cats

Yeah, you need a dome on those boxes. I have a litter mat in front of mine, but old carpet would probably work as well.

Edited to add: I bought this jumbo-sized domed litter box off Amazon a few weeks ago for a new kitten. It has a clear door flap on it but I fold it back to make it more open. The foster mom warned me that she was very messy with litter and this has done the trick. It's also, as I said, jumbo-sied. I've also been using this litter mat which I suppose is okay, I'm neutral on it. It does seem to work.

(I included some Amazon links to give you an idea since you mentioned Amazon, no affiliate links just the smile URL for donating to your charity-of-choice if you've set it up. You can get domed litter boxes cheaper if you click around, I just mentioned the one I got because I've been pretty pleased with it.)

I've owned a few different cat fountains now. My cat has refused to drink from standing water since she was a kitten. She prefers running tap water but that felt wasteful.

The biggest issue with cat fountains, without question, is cleaning them. Every single cat fountain for sale is probably going to be decent out of the box. Some are louder and some are quieter but they all do about the same shit.

You may already have thought about this, but you need to actually scrub the hell out of the fountain once a week. Slime/scum builds quickly on the pumps inlet and the charcoal filters can only do so much. Once you let it get dirty, it's way harder to clean.

I'd personally recommend this fountain. Cat Fountain
if only because it's the easiest one to clean that I've found so far.

If you're set on building one, just make sure you can take it apart. Fully. I have to take my pump apart once per month to clean it. Anything you seal had better be air and water tight, otherwise you'll be better off leaving the connection loose.

Actually many posts aren't even wood. I've had 15-25 lb cats end up with Eiffel towers because the posts are cardboard and plastic. I called to buy a replacement and was told it was $20. I ended up getting round wood posts (cutting and drilling holes) and untreated sisal rope and wrapped it. I like the velvet fabric. I hate sherpa. I upgraded to 2 nicer ones at Christmas. She loves the one and doesn't care much for the second one. There are reasonable ones on Amazon. This one was nice but you can't remove the ladder (it won't be stable). Make sure she has something to claw and climb on, or she will claw your furniture. I have one kind of like this, and one of these. They help a lot. When he starts play-hunting you or your girlfriend, it's time to take out a cat toy and redirect that playful or aggressive energy. The best ones are those multicolored felt snake looking things.

That will teach him that toys are for play, and once he's tired out he will be a lot more receptive to being pet or held.

u/dasistverboten · 1 pointr/cats

Pay attention to your kitty. Their tails and the ears will tell you a lot about their mood! If your kitty doesn't take to you right away give it time.

Cats are pretty hardy creatures and I doubt you'll have to worry too much about hurting one... if you put a collar on kitty make sure it's a breakaway. That's one danger people don't always think about. They can choke if it gets caught and they're scrambling to get away. Also, if you've got strings on your window blinds, maybe tie them up out of reach. Be mindful of plants and foods you've got out as a lot of plants and certain foods are toxic to cats.

I might humbly suggest this toy for your kitty. Every cat I've known who had one loved this thing to bits.

u/PJsAreComfy · 1 pointr/Pets

These are my favorite toys to exercise my cat: 1, 2, 3. We also play a lot of fetch with toy mice and ponytail holders, which is nice because it doesn't require my full attention; I pile up a stack of them to throw while I watch TV, make dinner, etc. When I'm lazy I just sit on the stairs and run the wand up and down as far as my arm reaches and she runs up and down chasing it until she's exhausted.

This one is also popular though I haven't tried it myself.

Well Splotch is back to her normal eating, which is excellent. She's got a funny little tummy it seems. Though I'll mention when we take her for a general check up in the next couple of months. And hopefully today we can get her to play with her catit super roller thing. Currently half the blue bits aren't on to encourage her. But it's mostly me batting it around going 'Look!'

Played around with watercolours yesterday. That was fun, even if J wasn't impressed with my colourful kitty. Might see about doing a bit of needle felting today.

P.S. Having a cold on and off for more than a month sucks. The last couple of days have been dreadful. I just slept on Sunday.

(Something like the above has worked great with 6 plus cats I've known.)

u/crazycatalchemist · 1 pointr/CatsAreAssholes

I saw you’re getting a scratching post. Great! Make sure you follow the personality of your kitty. I have two - one loves to be up high, the other loves to burrow under blankets or go in holes. So I got an almost ceiling high cat tree with cubby holes that satisfies both of them.

My girl cat loves this ball tower. Its great for solo play and it’s cheap.

Personally I/my family have always had multiple cats but you have to consider her personality again. It won’t a perfect fix on its own and you should have a backup plan if they did not get along. My parents have introduced many cats over 25 years and only had to rehome two (due to violence) but it does happen.

u/ssdude101 · 1 pointr/beagles

Use something like this to dilute shampoo and conditioner. Get some kind of hose attachment. These kick ass when washing dogs.

We use 2 brushes. One is similar to a furminator: https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B00ZHUDNS4/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&psc=1

The other, which if anything works better, and which our girl absolutely loves, is a grooming glove: https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B01N9KSITZ/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&psc=1

I recommend both, but if you were to pick one or the other, I recommend the glove more than the brush.

u/superjanna · 1 pointr/funny

The other cat might benefit from a food dish that forces him to eat like scooper cat. I tried one of these for my puker (so I didn’t have to feed him 10 pieces of kibble at a time), but he hated it. THIS HOWEVER (1/4 cup size) works wonders (I just leave it on the floor, he knocks em out a few at a time. Super noisy, but it slows him down and I don’t have to monitor him)

u/LantanRudbeckia · 1 pointr/beagle

I really like this kind Glove Brush. Those little nubs do a great job of holding the hair, and you can pull it off the glove in a mat to throw it away.

u/alex_moose · 1 pointr/AmItheAsshole

Congratulations on the new cuties!

If you're not already doing so, consider barring then from the master bedroom. Your wife being able to sleep without allergens each night may make a big difference over time.

I also second the recommendation to get the gloves for grooming. Here's the ones I got six months ago. They've made such a difference for my cats. Allergies aren't an issue for us, but vomiting hairballs was. Using these a couple times a week has reduced that tremendously, and the cats really enjoy it. Start with rubbing then in the direction of their hair, but eventually work up to "scrubbing" them back and forth and then smoothing the hair back out. You'll get a lot more off. Using any grooming tool will definitely cause hair and dander to fly, so be thoughtful about whether you do it, and clean up afterwards.

Pet Grooming Glove

Btw - my foster kittens favorite toys include a tennis ball (great for grappling with), and tinsel poms from the craft aisle at Walmart. They typically come with multiple sizes in a bag. Use the biggest for the cats, and give the rest to your kids for crafts - they're too small and can cause the kittens to choke.

u/CiderOtter · 1 pointr/CatAdvice

My cat doesn’t love the cat brushes either. I ended up getting these gloves that he loves. They probably don’t work quite as well as a nice brush but the work pretty well on my cat!

Good luck!

I just buy stuff at the pet store, but I can try and find a few recommendations. You'll want to avoid things with bells or small parts, at least while she's tiny. PetSmart usually has some pretty good stuff, or you can even find a good selection on Amazon. If you're gone a lot, it also might be a good idea to invest in something you can turn on and leave running while you're gone, like this:
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B06WP7F8YC/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_2GCMBb2JZP9JV.

Ironically, my cat's favorite toy is a piece of cut up fleece on a stick that I got from the pet store.

Here are a few homemade things that look fun:

https://www.etsy.com/listing/496293492/cat-toy-kitten-toy-kitten-puzzle-cat

https://www.etsy.com/listing/573944129/catnip-toy-medium-kicker-cat-toy-cat

And here are some more things from Amazon that I would recommend:
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00DT2WL26/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_bLCMBbEDZ585B

And
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00QPLUQXY/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_dOCMBbRA7B6MM

Just make sure she's careful with the string on this one. As long as she doesn't break it off and swallow it, it should be fine.

Some sort of a laser pointer is always a great toy for kitties, just make sure not to shine it in her eyes.

Finally, make sure to get her a cat tree if you have room for one. Cats like to climb. Something like this would be great:
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0794T79KM/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_ERCMBbM18RTGA

Scratching posts are also important, so here's what I would recommend for a scratching post, if you don't want to get the cat tree:
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07BY385RX/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_fTCMBbKA5B15Q

Once you spay her, if she isn't already, feed her adult food so she doesn't gain too much weight. A good kitten food to start her on before the spay is Good Natured, at PetSmart. If she's spayed and you want to start her on adult food, I use this, and my cat loves it, and she's super healthy:
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B06XDQCL13/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_0VCMBbHDBF7XG

If you have any other questions, please feel free to message me. I have had my cat for two years, and raised her since she was three months old, so I can answer a lot of kitten questions.

One more thing, get her a bed. She may not always use it, but she will appreciate it.

u/boosted_monkey13 · 1 pointr/CatAdvice

Yeah, I'd move his play schedule just a bit to allow him to play between 8-10 and then go to sleep when you go to sleep. I'd also get him some interactive toys such as this one: Circle ball track. My cats love to play with the tunnel that came with this bundle: Insert random name for hyperlink.

u/sluttylunalovegood · 1 pointr/CatAdvice

My cat loves this toy. He plays with it independently so he is much less needy when I get home from work. Cat towers also keep cats occupied because they love to climb. You can also keep him entertained with a feeding puzzle like this one. You seem to have a good play schedule, but maybe your cat just needs more mental stimulation! I understand you need to respect your roommates space, so hopefully adding some of these things into the cats life will help!

Would a slow feeder toy be a possibility? I let my cats forage food out of one and it's legit just sit and use one paw to get the food out.

This is pretty much my cat arsenal. Not sure if these will work with your man but figured i'd put them out there. I also buy cat sticks for them to chew on but usually you have to supervise them because big chunks get chewed off.

We have a cat that eats too fast then vomits, and we got one of these to slow her down. https://www.amazon.com/Catit-Senses-2-0-Digger-Cats/dp/B015P13QMM It definitely helps, she has to pull each piece of food out with her paw. It took her a little while to figure it out, but now she's a pro. Still a little bit pukey but much, much better. I'm actually thinking of also buying another one made by the same company that is shaped like a tree, and alternating them every few months.

u/antilumin · 1 pointr/cats

I had one sorta like this: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B015P13QMM/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_wRj0Cb1EHC25V

Then one of my cats learned how to pull the tubes out. Cheater.

u/nuttmmeg · 1 pointr/Pets

How comfortable s she with touching her paws? I'd suggest soft paws if she's comfortable, or you could have the vet do it for you. They still allow cats to retract their claws, so they're humane, but they can't scratch up your apartment. I suggest this only because it seems so stressful & it's a quick fix for now.

For food, maybe a toy that forces your cat to play with it would fit her personality. Maybe a cat toy like this, or this? You'd have the problem of her knocking them around... but well, that's the point. It's meant to be enriching & fun for a cat like yours. You can put a food mat underneath it, so that when treats fall you don't have to worry about your floor getting dirty.

I don't have any advice for the water dish though, since you already switched it to a heavier one. Good luck!
