The main thing you did wrong is not having a good, bright light handy. I carry one of these everywhere, with or without a firearm. It lives on my desk at night, a step away from my bed. You don't ever want to be armed, in the dark, unable to properly illuminate and identify targets. If you had a good, bright light, you could have lit that person up through the window and probably sent them running.

Lights are cheap, in the overall scheme of things. You shouldn't be deploying a firearm without one.

I hope you called the police and reported this incident.

u/gingerooed · 14 pointsr/Parenting

We got the highest reviewed off of Amazon to use at a wedding. My son was 6 weeks old and slept 6+ hours.. we actually had to wake him to eat.

Here is a link.. If that's allowed? Baby Banz EMBB Hearing Protection, 0-2 Years, Blue https://www.amazon.com/dp/B007BEHSDU/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_3dlzzbQ33V8MS

Editing to add that I saw your other post and I really hope some of the suggestions help. Please keep us updated on if anything works.. as a mother pregnant with my second this is one of my biggest fears once the baby arrives.

u/cat-gun · 13 pointsr/SexWorkers

A few other suggestions, of varying cost and practicality:

  • Contact the police and make a report. Don't mention the sex work, just say he contacted you through a social networking site. Keep a diary of every encounter. Save his messages, voicemail, letters. Likewise, tell people you trust what is going on. Ask them to keep a diary. You want to establish a paper trail, so that if you ever need to defend yourself against him, you aren't the one who gets convicted of assault.

  • Submit the guys name and contact info to the blacklists at SafeOffice.com, uglymugs, and ourlist.nl. This won't really help you defend against him, but it may be satisfying to know that you're helping to prevent him from doing the same to someone else.

  • Team up with some other sex workers in your area. Install the Cell 411 app, so you can alert each other if a client goes nuts on you.

  • Befriend your neighbors. Invite them over for a dinner party or two. If you're attacked, you want to be able to escape to a friendly place.

  • Consider taking a model mugging class, where you can practice-- with full force--what to do if you are attacked.

  • If you ever see him in public, start screaming at the top of your lungs "Help me! Help me! This man is going to attack me! Help me!" while pointing your fingers at him. Set off a personal alarm. This will draw attention to him, which will hopefully embarrass him, and cause him to leave the scene.

  • Walk through your daily routine, and identify places where you would be vulnerable to attack: public garages, unlighted streets, subway. Plan out what you would do in each location. Which shops are nearby? What are their hours? Where you can you hide? Where dead-ends/traps to avoid?

  • Stop by the shops in your neighborhood, and show them a picture of the guy (if you have one). Tell them that he's been stalking you and ask them to let you know if they see him in the shop.

  • Seek out your local SWOP chapter and befriend other sex workers. Ask how they deal with stalkers. Social support from people who understand what you're going through will help boost your mood, and reduce your anxiety.

  • Ask a friend to stay with you until this blows over.

  • Consider going on tour. If you have friends and relatives in other cities, ask them if you can stay with them until he gives up.

  • Get a roommate. Get multiple roommates.

  • If you have few ties to your current city, consider moving to another city.

  • Get an intimidating dog, like a German Shephard or Rottweiler.

  • Move to an apartment with a doorman and a gated entry.

  • Hire a driver to take you to appointments. Avoid public transit--take Uber or Lyft instead.

  • Start a program of weight training. Build up your muscle and strength. Not only will this increase your ability to defend itself, it will boost your mood, reduce anxiety, and keep you fit.

  • Keep a tactical flashlight in your car, your purse, bed, and door. Use it to blind a would-be assailant. Practice using it as a baton to strike an assailant.

  • Carry a baseball bat/defensive cane in your car. Practice swinging it with full force against a would-be assailant.

  • Carry bear spray. Buy several cans, and practice using them.

  • If you live in a state where you can do so, get a concealed carry permit and a handgun, and learn how to use it.

  • Beef up the frame, lock, and strike plate on your door, so it can't be easily bashed in. Install bars/security screens on your windows.

  • Install a visual doorbell, so you can see who is at your door, before answering, or getting close to the door.

  • Install security cameras around your house / apartment. Install motion sensors.

  • Hire a detective to create a dossier on him. Find out where he lives and works. Find out his vehicle license plate number. Find out if he has children, a wife, a mother. Have a heavily tattooed, tall, burly guy deliver the dossier to him at his office, and ask him ever so kindly not to contact you again.

I'll narrow it down to one for now, but I can add more if you don't like this suggestion. ThruNite TC12 V2 NW: $70, micro-usb rechargeable, comes with a great battery, and has a simple UI. It can easily light up a target forty yards away.

And you don't suck. You got flooded with a bunch of new information all at once. Don't beat yourself up about it.

u/justtookatest · 13 pointsr/flashlight

> streamlight protac HL 4

Just get her a $12 convoy with an orange peel reflector. Or something like a Thrunite TC12 with a charging port and save $20

u/Handsome_Zack · 13 pointsr/flashlight

You'll get plenty far with $50! u/PnwStimm has a great suggestion with the Q8 - its about the best bang-for-your-buck light you can get. However, it won't come with the required 4 18650 li-ion cells you need, and that will bump its cost by at least $15-20.

A fairly new light to the scene is the ThruNite TC15, which blasts out an amazing 2300 lumens AND comes with a quality 18650 battery. It isn't an uber-tactical military flashlight, but it has a direct access shortcut to turbo which is something I really enjoy. The UI is very well set up.

If you think he would want to play cop and look the part, you could look into offerings from ArmyTek or Nitecore that look the part (I can help with that if you want to go this route).

So long as you don't laugh at the name, there is another option: my first "real" flashlight was a WOWTAC A1S BSS v2 and it kinda fits the bill - the (removable) strike bezel is absurd, it has a red light filter, and it has an interesting driver that can be controlled from both the e-switch on the side and the tail switch (for normal or "tactical" use). Its served me pretty well, and the 1050 lumens it puts out is absolutely no joke.

EDIT TO ADD: /u/parametrek has an insanely handy website for finding a wide variety of flashlights within specific parameters. Here is a custom search for flashlights/weaponlights under $50 with over 700 lumens (which in my head is pretty farking bright). You may want to dig through these and see if there's anything that catches your eye!

u/mpak87 · 12 pointsr/flashlight

This light is so bad it’s kind of a meme here. We try very hard to be a really friendly, welcoming place, and it doesn’t give a person a good first impression when they ask for input and get roasted. I don’t want to sound like some kind of gatekeeping douche. We can advise some truly excellent lights for very little money, but for some unfortunate reason that model is kind of crappy and was marketed to death.

I saw you mention a list of uses in another comment, the Thrunite you were advised to get is a great one. Another budget option that’s still of good quality is a Sofirn SP31. It comes with a battery and charger, and would be everything you need to get going. Also a world better than that thing.

u/Willravel · 11 pointsr/politics

In the past, I've found that this mask works well in protecting one from spray and gas used by police during more, shall we say, extreme protesting situations. As for pepper spray in your eyes, nothing works as well as anti-fog scuba goggles. Are you going to look strange? Yes. Will you be able to see and breathe? Also, yes.

I'm still working on taser resistance. For the time being, thick clothing is your best defense. Jeans often won't do the trick, but I've seen thicker cargo pants do the trick and a thicker jacket, one that can prevent the barbs from coming into contact with your skin, work well enough. Layers help too, and considering how cold it is in many of the protest areas, it just makes sense.

u/debello · 10 pointsr/flying

I flew my (at the time) 3 month old last summer on an 8 hour round trip XC for vacation, as well as some other flights. In my experience, it's been easy peasy. Here's what makes it that way:

  1. Make sure you have someone on 100% kid duty throughout the entire flight. In my case, it was my wife. She sat in the back next to the car seat.
  2. Let the person on Kid Duty handle the kid. I have a now somewhat fond memory of getting a departure clearance out of a busier Class C airport with my 5 month old screaming the background because he wanted out of his car seat. That's the way it goes sometimes, but focus on performing your pilot duties and let the child handler handle the child. As part of your pre-flight, brief them on what to expect and when they should notify you of a problem. As PIC, it's up to you to ensure a comfortable flight for all of your passengers, but your first priority is safety.
  3. During takeoff and landing, we had the little guy strapped in the car seat. Once we were a few thousand feet AGL and en route, he was in and out of the car seat depending on his comfort level. He was able to nurse, stretch out and interact with Mom and stayed pretty happy the whole time. There were a few times we had to go through some smaller convective clouds. I knew about them ahead of time and gave enough warning that my wife was able to strap him back in the car seat in case of any turbulence.
  4. We used Baby Banz over his ears. We also stuck some cotton in his ears under the Banz because they didn't always stay on.
  5. Little children don't quite know how to equalize ear/sinus pressure yet, so if it all possible, try to limit your climbs and descents to about 500 FPM. Again, safety first, but if you have the chance keep that in mind. Sucking (whether it be nursing, bottle, pacifier, candy, etc) is a great way to keep pressure equalized in the sinuses. Once we were at a safe altitude and climbing, my wife would pull our guy out of the car seat and nurse him until we were at cruising altitude. If he was ever uncomfortable he didn't let us know.

I don't have any personal experience flying a 3 year old, but I'd imagine a lot of the same applies - make sure you have someone whose sole duty is to hang with the child, and a booster seat may not be bad idea so that they can see out of the windows while still belted in and it will help make the seat belt more effective if, God forbid, you need it.

I'd be happy to answer any other questions or share more details if you'd like. Good luck!

Bonus: Pic of our little guy riding along comfortably at 9000'

I standardized on Z-Wave and Zigbee stuff - more Z-Wave than Zigbee. I used a SmartThings hub in this house, and so I used these sensors. I put one under each sink in the house, plus one near the main stack in the basement and the hot water heater.

If I could, I'd also recommend adding a couple of HA CO/smoke sensors. Again, z-wave for me, but I used this First Alert model. If I get smoke or CO at any time, it alerts my phone, and I'm a huge fan of that.

One note on those smoke detectors - some places have highly specific laws on what smoke detectors you must legally have, and these do not match code where I live. I run double sets - one set that matches code and then this set for the HA side. It's not a problem to have more smoke/CO detectors, and it's a cheap and potentially life or property saving upgrade.

u/clusterphuk · 10 pointsr/EDC

Fox 40 Sonik whistle. Not something to be used for fun. This is a real emergency whistle that can reach 120+ dB. It's equivalent to having a chainsaw revving next to your head. They also make a standard version if you're not trying to blow out ear drums. It still gets pretty loud.

Olight I3E EOS

Olight I1R EOS if you want something rechargeable.

Also, Olight does regular sales and new releases on their website.

Streamlight is another great option but their keychain size offering is just not very good compared to Olight. I do believe everyone should have a Pro Tac 1L-1AA since it can take both C123A batteries and standard AA batteries.

u/angryqueso · 9 pointsr/flashlight

For an aesthetically pleasing and small light, I'd recommend the ReyLight Pineapple.

A beautiful brass light that takes either standard AA's or rechargeable 14500's if you want higher output. High CRI out of the Nichia LED, and isn't too big. Most people will recommend that you get an 18650 light (and so would I honestly) but a lot of new people to the flashlight world don't want to have to get a light with special batteries or one that is as large as an 18650 light.

If you want a buy once/cry once option, there is the Zebralight Sc64w which is pretty much the smallest 18650 light on the market, and practically the best. But then you'll need at least 2 batteries and a charger, so factor that cost in.

I hope I could help!

u/Zak · 9 pointsr/flashlight

The Sofirn SP36S is a pretty good value for that sort of thing right now.

What are some of the lights he has currently, so we can get an idea of what isn't sufficient?

u/SirRipo · 9 pointsr/EDC

IMO, 1AAA lights are the best option for EDC. Ranging anywhere from like 50-150 lumens, and both small and light. The Olight I3E is a great option, or the ITP EOS A3 which seems to be the basis of the Maratac AAA, my favorite little EDC light.

$10 is a really low budget for quality lights. The only other thing in this price range that I can think of is a 3x AAA zoomie cheapie.

Flashlights aren't self defense tools. Flashlights are only tools for awareness, which is key in self defense. Unless you are 9th-degree ninjitsu master you are only putting yourself in more danger considering them such. Get your LTC/ CCW, pepper-spray, or self-defense training/ Krav Maga.

For what you are looking for, I'd get this.

Not illegal, per se, but would be considered brandishing in most jurisdictions because it is attached to a firearm.

Weapon lights are for target identification. Hand held lights are for searching. Spend the $41 on Amazon to get a decent Streamlight.

I run mine unattended, but I have a fire ball and an automatic fire extinguisher to snuff the flames in the event something goes wrong. The fireball is nice because you can put it just about anywhere, including inside an enclosure if you plan for it.

Local exhaust - vacuum system, fans more likely. Wearing a tight fitting ANSI-approved respirator with p-100 particulate filters. Receiving appropriate training with the respirator is key - knowing how to achieve a good seal is everything, being clean shaven is a must.

If the exposure is frequent enough, you may ask your employer to sample for total dust and respirable silica for an 8 hour time weighted average of your exposure. However, if this is only happening once a day for a short period of time I can almost guarantee your exposure will be under the OSHA limit for silica which is .05 mg/meter cubed.

Even in my work(mining, drying, screening strictly silica in fine cuts) over-exposures are rare.

Either way - protecting yourself while doing the dusty tasks is just smart. The links below are for the respirators I wear/provide my people. The half mask is rated to protect over 10x the exposure limit, while the full mask is rated over 25x the exposure limit. Also linked are appropriate p100 filters

u/EDCandmemes · 6 pointsr/EDC

Flashlight my dude, you won't be able to go back after carrying one.

Going by the rest of the stuff you carry i'd say a small AAA light that you can either attach to your keys or clip inside a pocket.

A couple of recommendations:

To clip on to keys: The Olight i3 EOS. 1xAAA 90 lumens, 45min runtime. Simple twist on/off, one mode, plenty bright for most daily stuff. If you want something multi-mode still good for your keys, the Thrunite Ti3 and Lumintop AAA Tool are honourable mentions too.

To clip to your pocket: The Streamlight Microstream. 1xAAA 45 lumens, 2.5hr runtime. Solid pocket clip and push-button that lends itself to be a really good momentary light but can be clicked on for continuous use. Really solid light, inexpensive, Tried and trusted by a lot of the EDC community. Honourable mention goes to the Streamlight Stylus Pro. Almost the exact same light but longer. 2xAAA, 90 lumens, 6 hour runtime if you don't mind the weight of an extra AAA on you.

u/qweltor · 6 pointsr/CCW

> Anything you would have done different?

Carry a flashlight.

A LED Maglight works just fine. Compact flashlights are easy to carry, and have high/low/strobe modes.

u/CaptRon25 · 6 pointsr/flashlight

The Thrunite Neutron 2C V3 complete kit 50 bucks. Ramping UI

u/owe84n · 6 pointsr/flashlight

I'll second that recommendation - bloody good starter light.

Another option is the Sofirn SP31 v2.0 - but as you've mentioned re: charging, this is more of an external charger type situation, vs the battery in the Wowtac having a USB connector.

u/notaneggspert · 6 pointsr/flashlight

TruNite TC15 seems like a winner?

u/Nigel_Yearning · 5 pointsr/preppers

Okay, I made a decision. I got myself this ThruNite TC12 V2. Even though it runs off of an 18650 battery, it is micro USB rechargeable. u/annoyingone had mentioned about getting a solar panel system for the batteries. In that case, I do not need to worry about hoarding AA or AAA batteries so much. However, I have to be aware of the tradeoffs and keep some less superior flashlights on hand. Again, I plan to use my EDC flashlight as a last resort when no other light is available. I have some Maglites I would like to use for self-defense and to use as a primary and only whip out the ThruNite when I really need it. Thank you sir for the help!

u/ThisIsWhatICarry · 5 pointsr/caving

What is your budget?

<$20: a good book on caving, or some batteries. Lithium AA/AAA if they don't like rechargeables, AA/AAA NiMH if they do. I've had good luck with the brand Tenergy, which is sold in bulk by AllBattery.com. They're basically cheap Chinese imports but their QA is decent. (Source: I'm a professional photographer who's used them for years.) Go for the 2,500 mAh capacity. You might also consider a decent charger. More on that shortly.

<$50: One of the best chargers on the market is this bad boy, but it's somewhat expensive and only charges 4 cells at once. However, it charges them safely (not overcharging, not charging too fast, etc, which limits long-term life), can identify bad cells, and can charge almost any cylindrical battery out there, including the far superior 18650 cell, which is important for a good headlamp or flashlight. For a good headlamp, consider the ThruNite TH10 in neutral white for $40, or the same headlamp with a battery for $15 more. Note: this light doesn't use AA/AAA batteries; it uses the 18650 battery, which is slightly larger but 4 times the capacity of an AA battery and is able to discharge power fast enough to support amazingly bright lights. Every light I'm linking here supports multiple brightness modes, with a maximum brightness around 1,000 lumens, i.e. as bright as your car's headlights. They also drop to between 0.4 lumens and 1 lumen at their lowest setting, which will last for up to 70-ish days. Yes, really. That's a nice feature to have in a cave.

<$100: A good headlamp/flashlight. Most cavers I know are old-school when it comes to flashlights because they aren't aware of some of the incredible LED and battery innovations that have occured. Most of their headlamps are either small and underpowered or huge and bulky and... still underpowered sometimes. I'd recommend a ThruNite TC-12 v2 in neutral white. It also uses an 18650 battery. The light bundle I linked includes one battery and the light is USB chargable, though that charger I linked earlier will charge the battery faster.

You can add a helmet strap if you know they use a helmet. If you're looking for a headlamp instead of a flashlight, consider the ThruNite TH10 I linked earlier or the Nitecore HC30 in neutral white which is slightly more expensive. Nitecore and ThruNite are fairly similar, though in my opinion Nitecore looks more "tactical" while ThruNite's electronics are slightly better. Both are good companies, however.

<$150: If you decide to get a light and extra batteries, don't get any battery with a brand containing the word "fire". (Those brands are known for lying about the capacities and being fire risks.) I'd recommend a 4-pack of KeepPower 3,400 mAh 18650 batteries if you're going for that kind of batteries as they're a good brand and I own them myself.

Some other considerations: a nice base layer, i.e. thermal underwear. I'd strongly recommend merino wool as it's thin, light, and warm even when it's wet. Cost: $50-$100 per item for a top or bottom/long johns. And they'll always have a warm, fuzzy feeling when they think of you. ;-)

u/ThisNameIsValid27 · 5 pointsr/flashlight

You could get the Atactical A1S for £25.99 (so long as you don't care about USB charging or a moonlight mode, it comes with a protected battery with a port on it) and then buy some quality batteries as backups and a quality charger and still have a bit left over.

You could just about afford a ThruNite TC12 if you wanted a USB charging light, but that doesn't leave you with spare money for more batteries and a charger. It does come with one protected battery though.

u/NerfEveryoneElse · 5 pointsr/flashlight

Thrunite Neutron 2C if you dont want to take the battery out for charging and better UI than the already mentioned wowtac.

u/Ratus_ · 5 pointsr/flashlight

That's a very crunchy light.

Do not get that light.

Definitely not worth $3, let alone almost $10.

------

Get either one of these much better lights:

  • Wowtac a1s
  • Sofirn SP31

    -------

    >but this first purchase is out of need for finding ping pong balls

    That's one I hadn't heard before.

I'd suggest you do another post about what you need the light for, you will get a lot of good responses.
u/Souichirou · 5 pointsr/flashlight

WELL THEN ! since you want something to start I always recommend either the Sofirn SP31 or the Wowtac A1S both on amazon for around $30 or less and come with an 18650 and charging solution with a turbo of 1000+ lumens. Since this is your first light you probably don't have cells or a dedicated charger unless you are a vaper.

IF you really want to drop closer to the set budget pick up an Emisar D4v2 tiny as all hell and dumps 4k+ lumens solid throw (not thrower levels BUT very impressive) and pick up some cells and a charger.

But again don't rush start small.... you will end up spending more than you want to overtime..... =D

It's a complete package flashlight. (Comes with 3 batteries and integrated charger)

You've got a couple of nay-sayers in here, but I think you'd be fine with a P100 mask, contractor's goggles, Tyvek suit, and a rigged up negative air system using a box fan, some plastic sheeting, and a few furnace air filters. Wet down anything that looks suspicious with a pump sprayer (floor tiles, pipe insulation, popcorn ceiling, etc.) and double-bag using contractor grade bags. Dump the waste in a facility that will take asbestos etc.

The thing is, if you don't know it's asbestos, you're in the clear. If you get it tested then you might be legally obligated to have it abated by a licensed crew and disclose that when you go to sell.

Dust Collector - $239

Air Filtration - $139.99

As far as jointers - I'd stay away from the bench top ones. You'll find them useful for a short period of time, but then you'll realize you should have sprung for a bigger model. Along with a planer, I would look on CL for a decently priced used model. Obviously this doesn't work with your Amazon Gift card plan, but I wouldn't waste them. And buying a good jointer new off amazon is going to be out of your budget.

Jigsaw - $65.99

3M Respirator Mask - $15.97

As far as clamps, I would stick with Bessey clamps. I would price check Amazon vs Home Depot and see what's cheaper. If HD is cheaper, don't waste your Amazon GCs on them. HD tends to run Special Buys on them from time to time too.

Right now, you're just under $500. Do you plan on doing any hand tool work (i.e. chisels, handsaws)? If so, you can spend some on those tools as well.

I have tried

  • Respro Sportsta
  • 3M 8511 Particulate N95 Respirator
  • 3M 8233 Particulate N100 Respirator
  • 3M 6391 P100 Reusable Respirator Gas Mask

The Respro is okay. Certainly the only stylish one i tried. One common feature of the masks is a moldable metal nose piece, that allows you to shape the mask to your face. The one on the respro is both the most durable, and the worst. Its stiffness makes it tough to form and reform. That said, the seal it forms seems to be fine, but getting a really good fit is hard, because it lacks a strap that goes over the ear. I'm sure you can get this style of mask in n99 or whatever.

The 3M n95 is the cheapest (by far), and the lightest. The fit is good, and the seal is adequate, although the seal is the worst of the four. The filter is more stiff like paper.

The 3M n100 is probably my favorite so far. The filter is more flexible like cotton. I generally don't worry about crushing it in my bag, except for the metal nose piece. The fit and seal are both excellent.

The 3M p100 is certainly the most hardcore. It's cost is the highest, but the replacement filters are cheap enough. I haven't used it much, but it's the one that the bicycle collective sells, which I consider to be a good marker.

Also I recently reached out to the American Lung Association about masks. Here is the last, most detailed response.

    > USEPA sets a PM 2.5 annual air quality standard at 15ug/m3
This is a rolling 12 month average. There is also a 24 hour limit of 35ug/m3
These numbers are established for air quality in the air shed and not necessarily in the breathing zone – which is the most item relevant to your question.
These numbers are not extractable to breathing zone concentrations.
A healthy person should not have a need for any respirators, the respirator is recommended for those with impaired systems.
In addition, lung cancer is complex and there are other factors, which include air quality (type of pollutant), genetic disposition, and duration of exposure.

    > Saying all this, it’s hard to make a recommendation on when to use the N95 disposable respirator to prevent lung cancer (knowing that the three factors above play a large role in the equation and outcome). If in doubt, or if you feel there is a need, wear the respirator (with proper fit) when there are air quality concern days).

u/ContagionKits · 5 pointsr/preppers

Hey there, I'm not the HAZMAT expert but I do Contagion Kits' product sourcing. I'll let Z get answer the technical side of your question, but I can tell you that if you're interested in that specific half-mask (the 3M 7500 series), you're better off separately buying the mask and a set of P100 filters (these cartridges or these filters) which will provide a higher level of protection (P100 vs N95) for an equal or lesser price. The 3M 2097 filters are what we use ourselves and offer with our kits on the site.

The residue in left in the filter on the paper right? Also how bad do I need to avoid breathing acetone or how volatile is it? I have lots of windows and fans, I got this respirator from 3M, will it do the job for acetone vapors? https://www.amazon.ca/3M-2097-Particulate-Filter/dp/B00328IAO0

That is such a UK/Ireland thing where you guys consider that a long distance and we in the US don't. My mother drives over an hour to nanny my brother's kids, one way. And thinks nothing of it (they reimburse her for gas). 40 miles is nothing for family to drive to visit if they want to visit, but it's vast if they don't want to.

You might want to look into noise blocking headphones for babies and toddlers for the footie matches. That way you won't have to worry about the screaming damaging hearing. They are pretty cheap and it might be fun to have your mother buy it, tell her it's so they can take the baby to the games and I bet your stepfather will especially like it, it's confirmation of the relationship you want him to have with your kiddo https://www.amazon.co.uk/Banz-Mini-Earmuffs-Months-Blue-x/dp/B007BEHSDU

u/bombadil1564 · 5 pointsr/flashlight

If you are okay sticking with AA that won't accept 14500's, then Zebralight's SC53c or SC5c Mk II are excellent choices.

Lights (according to Parametrek's site that accept both AA and 14500 that might be worth looking into:

Thrunite Archer 1A V3 Neutral White

Fenix LD09 (2015)

Fenix LD11

Olight S1A

Fenix LD12 (2017)

Fenix RC05

Rofis TR15

That should get you started. I don't own any of those suggested lights (though I do own a Zebralight and quite like it). I recommend a neutral white tint (4000-5000K) and ideally high CRI (shows colors better, could be important as an ele-chicken...is that a black or green wire?!)

u/General_Specialist · 5 pointsr/flashlight

What are your shelters for? Can you give us any more details on your situation?

Without knowing much about what you really need, I would recommend you look at the Thrunite Archer 1A. You can get it on Amazon for about $30. It runs on 1 AA battery, it's bright, small, easy to use, and it has a very low mode that can provide a small amount of light for 1-2 weeks.

One more thing: do NOT rely on alkaline batteries for your emergency kits. They tend to leak after a while and may damage other items in the process. Invest in some Energizer Ultimate Lithium AA (L91) cells for your kits. Yes, they're more expensive, but they won't leak and they have a great shelf life.

u/HeloRising · 5 pointsr/3Dprinting

Well yes, but actually no.

In all seriousness, the vast majority of machines shouldn't present problems if you don't start opening up cases and poking around and making ill-advised modifications.

Major brand name machines are generally pretty reliable if run in-spec. There are occasional issues (See the recent controversy with the Ender 3's bum connectors) but for the most part the risk is minimal.

That said, it's a mechanical device that works with high temperatures and generally flammable material, it's inevitable that there are going to be problems.

I have my printer set up with a metal beam over the bench and I stuck one of these above the printer. I highly recommend them.

A lot of people like these but they're not a great idea because of how they function. They explode and throw their fire suppressant all over the area but the explosion is basically just a small firecracker and can throw burning debris around a room.

The overhead ones that I posted will just pop open and dump their contents down so they're perfect for positioning over a printer.

u/DerBrizon · 4 pointsr/Welding

Yeah... Zinc-Oxide is shitty.

Where I work they give us 3M reusable respirators with "cookie" filters:

Respirator

Filter

Notice the cost: 40-50 bucks to get started... I change my filters twice a day for the pink cookies (4 hours per set), and use a pair per day if I'm using higher quality organic filters. P100 filters clog up pretty quickly and they aren't meant for much more than minor exposure.

Make sure you shave before using your filter - that's pretty important. In my opinion, you should be wearing a respirator for any welding your doing. Iron oxide and other welding particulates are not good for you. For some fumes, the health effects are up for debate on hazard levels, but I'm not gonna breath the stuff to find out when I'm 60.

If your shop is having you work with galvanized materials, buff the galvanizing off of the weld area (and the backside, too!) to minimize exposure - don't worry about removing the zinc, because the welding arc does that anyway. You'll also get cleaner welds and less likelihood of wormholes caused by zinc oxide gassing out through your puddle. Ask your employer to provide adequate protection. No vent system in the world will allow you to weld that stuff without inhaling even a little of it. Here is some info about welding galvanized materials.

I'm not sure if you can force your employer to provide respirators - you might want to look into OSHA regulations (if in the US, obviously) about it... You might also ask /r/legaladvice or something - maybe there's an attorney there who specializes in industrial health who can help you.

u/makattak88 · 4 pointsr/Welding

Do you know what kind of respirator to look for? Something like this is common. I have one like this and it does the job. As you can see you don't need much money. Hell, I'll buy it for you if you seriously can't afford one. Seriously.
Once you get into welding and making coin, then start looking into spending the money on a nicer respirator. Personally, I still use the ol' 3M because I work in the field.

Go to a local safety supply shop and they can give you a couple tips to make sure you're buying the right size.

For now at least wear a dust mask. Especially when you have grinding to do.

u/BillDaCatt · 4 pointsr/Blacksmith

As long as you are forging outside and keep your face out of the smoke, your exposure to hexavalent chromium will be minimal. Otherwise you should use some kind of exhaust hood over your forge or wear a cartridge respirator like this one: 3M P100 Respirator

The danger here is much like asbestos, your risk of getting sick (lung cancer) increases depending on the level and frequency of exposure. But unless you are eating it, you are unlikely to get sick at all on the same day or even the same week you are exposed. Most likely it will be years later.

As a forging material, I'm guessing it will work similar to 4140 if that isn't exactly what it is. It will probably get really hard to work as it cools, so hit when it's hot!

u/thejunioristadmin · 4 pointsr/woodworking

This is the one I bought. I use the P100 filters that twist on as well.

Unrelated to woodworking but I have a great dane. In February or March he had surgery and was on some medicine that left him with upset bowels. He didn't make it outside and left a huge mess on my main floor tile...twice. The only way I was able to clean it all up was by wearing this amazing thing. I didn't smell any of it.

Actual user report.

I have the $27 one cell Anker light similar to yours, since June 2018. I used it extensively for a few months until I arrived at /r/flashlight. In fact, just used it tonight so I could write this honestly.

My observations:

  • appears very solidly built aluminum body

  • includes battery and onboard USB charging!

  • Beam is wide enough for close in and out to 100yds or so. This is very subjective.

  • Has not broken after being dropped, nor failed in the rain. (IP65 rated)

  • Has always turned on and off, and run time has lasted through all my hikes.

  • Endcap unscrews to expose a micro USB charging port, which has worked well so far.

  • Has three modes (HML) + flash + strobe. Memory works to return to last HML mode used. IMO, the memory feature is one of the most important elements of a good UI.

  • available at amazon with customary fast, inexpensive US shipping, and very well regarded Anker customer service.

Notice: I just discovered the 2 cell version has non-replaceable cells. Choose the 1 cell model that I have (replaceable cells).

Would I buy this again? Probably not. Is it "bad". No, has been ok for me. Just understand what you are buying. Of course, YMMV. Read this

Sofirn SP31 v2.0 is similar to the Wowtac A1S (dual switch but XP-L HI LED, so it's throwier). The low is 5lm. It's overpriced in Amazon, you can get it cheaper at AliExpress. Edit: Another option is the Sofirn SP32A v2.0, it allows you to choose between the fixed modes and ramping, but as it's side switch only you should use either electronic or mechanical lockup to prevent accidental activation.

Another option is the Thorfire VG15S (tail-switch only). Its XM-L2 LED is not the newest but it's still bright and the flashlight has a 0.5lm moonlight, the bundled battery is not bad and it isn't too expensive. The XP-L used in the Wowtac is pretty much a miniaturized version of the XM-L2 to fit in smaller spaces, they are very similar in performance.

Sofirn SP32A 2.0 Flashlight Bundle

u/jtm94 · 3 pointsr/flashlight

I received compensation from Sofirn in exchange for writing this review, but am in no way influenced and wish to provide an unbiased review.

Link to the imgur album in the OP

The light is the SP31 V2.0 with XP-L HI in neutral white

First off the packaging is fairly basic. It was a simple Sofirn box without many markings on it to even indicate what kind of light was inside. They just reuse similar packaging across their lights which is fine. I got the combo that includes a battery + 1 bay charger. Came with an instruction manual and fairly standard lanyard, nothing special here.

Next to my smaller 18650 lights such as the Emisar D4 or Jaxman E2L it seems kinda big, but after a day of carrying it there's no issue. I would like to take this moment to praise Sofirn's pocket clip. I personally strongly detest the "deep carry" pocket clips on lights such as the BLF A6 and prefer a simple more robust clip like Sofirn uses that doesn't raise up passed the tailcap. Something about this light that REALLY bugs me is the tailswitch protrudes beyond the lanyard bumps which WILL NOT allow it to tail stand. If you find yourself tailstanding your lights a lot, this may not be for you and is honestly the largest fault I have physically with this light.

Now on to usability and functionality. I really like the forward-clicky switch.I can definitely see why people prefer these. It's very easy to just soft hold it down when you only need a brief burst of light vs needing to fully depress a typical switch. It's honestly not a big deal, but for convenience sake if you're often only using a light to read or check things in short bursts I would recommend a forward clicky. This light has a secondary electronic towards the front and that's solely for changing modes. I also underestimated how nice it is to always have the light turn on at the same brightness I last used, no surprises, just consistency. You can find a brightness you prefer and just only use that. It's simple click to cycle through modes 1-5 then long-press to access strobe/SOS. My only gripe is there is no shortcut to turbo or the lowest mode. The modes also cycle with a fast smooth ramp which is pleasant.

Next is brightness and my thoughts on beam shape. I clocked the light in at level 1(7), level 2(53), level 3(151), level 4(477), level 5(985). This is mostly in-line with what Sofirn claims except for the max brightness of 1200 lumens that they tout. I tested on their own included cell at max brightness and even a Sony VTC5, but wasn't able to crack 1,000 lumens in my tests. As far as throw I can only really speak relative to my other lights and it's certainly throwier than a stock BLF A6 with OP reflector by about 25%~. I was also surprised it out throws Sofirn's own SF36W which has a sizably large reflector(but with XP-L not XP-L HI). The light is definitely throwier than I thought it would be for such a small reflector. You won't be breaking any records, but the hotspot is tight and the spill isn't extremely bright so you could use this to point out things or focus on objects at distances within 65ft/20M. As for tint it's not offensively cool at all, but is a bit cooler than I personally prefer. The positive is that with the XP=L HI there is very little tint shift so it's evenly white lacking an "egg-yolk" corona that I see with a lot of XP-L lights.

Runtimes.. I don't really have much to say here. The max-level stepdown is timed, but there is also mention of thermal sensing? After around 3 minutes at step down the head of the light was only 112F/44C and was still very holdable. It continued at this level for a little over 2 hours until it dropped down briefly before dropping again twice in 20min intervals. The light's indicator LED in the e-switch was full red indicating voltage was low and the output was quite low so I ended the test woth the cell at 3.06 volts. The red indicator turns on below 3.1V and shuts the light off entirely at 3V says the manual.

As per usual I tested the waterproofness lightly. I submerged the light in a little over 1ft/30cm of water for 2 hours exactly and there were no issues this time around. The head seems sealed/glued and I cannot get into it which probably adds to the waterproofness. The o-rings came lubed well and stopped all water ingress. There was no problem with the e-switch either. The only possible problem might be water sneaking around the tail switch boot, but I took a look inside and it was still dry. It passed my test no problem.

My brief thoughts on the charger... It works. Charges around what seems to be 0.5A with a standard micro USB jack. The cell voltage read 4.15V at completion which is good with me. Much rather slightly undercharge than overcharge and damage a cell's life.

Final thoughts... I can see why a lot of people like the forward clicky + e-switch combination. It's very predictable and you don't have to worry about accessing random turbo or strobes. I'm not a big fan of throwers, but the XP-L HI provides very little tint shift and solid throw in a small package. The numbers I tested at max brightness are a little off, but those extra 200 lumens are negligible in my opinion and the light is more than capable at medium ranges even on levels 3 or 4. I really wish the light could tailstand correctly I'm not sure if forward clicky switches are just larger and that wasn't taken into account, or perhaps the switch boot is just too thick where it depresses the switch. Overall if you're looking for a basic starter light with a no-frills predictable modeset, compact throw, and comes with a battery/charger to start an 18650 eco system I'd definitely recommend this light.

I have a beard and glasses, and I use the 3M 6391, and it works pretty darn well. The critical part for me is that it doesn't fog up my glasses, which just about every other dust mask I've used does.

> The Lathe:

Sounds like you've got this well under control.

> The Tools:

There are very split camps on tools: replaceable carbide tips vs traditional tools. Personally I think both have a place, but I do feel it's best to start with traditional tools to learn the how and why tools work the way they do. My personal opinion is always to spend the real money on good tools. They don't have to be expensive, but the right tool of the right quality (sharp, of course) will make all the difference in the world. Every try to dig a post hole with a hand trowel? :)

Also don't feel bound by just one brand or type of tool...most of us have lots of tools!

You can go with carbide-tipped tools such as Easy Wood Tools, Simple Woodturning Tools, or other brands. You can make your own for a fraction of the cost to buy.

There are a few of good entry-level HSS sets out there for about $80, such as this frequently recommended set of Benjamin's Best. I also like Hurricane brand tools which I feel are excellent entry-level HSS tools for the money. Either of those would serve you well through the learning curve and a good ways into your turning career.

If you wanted to pick just two higher-end tools, I feel Crown's Pro PM are good for the price. I own several, they're nice, but the handles are a bit short for my knuckle-dragging frame! All you really need for the projects you listed is a skew chisel and a spindle gouge.

Lastly, you could buy some of the popular "buy it for life" tools like Thompson Lathe Tools or D-Way Tools. These are widely considered the upper end of turning tools with each tool running between $55-200 (handles sold separately). Many people who get serious about their hobby end up with these tools because the harder tool steels are more durable.

> The Bench Grinder:

The Rikon 80-805 is the most common good deal for a grinder. Occasionally some other Asia-import will pop up on the scene for a little while, but the Rikon is pretty predictable about going on sale. Also, it comes with two decent wheels to get you started; not all import grinders come with decent wheels.

Eventually you might want to invest in CBN wheels to replace the frangible wheels that come on the grinder, but that's probably down the road for you.

Lots of people use that grinder, I've not heard anything outright bad about it (although some people prefer one with more HP).

> Drill Press?

A cheap drill press will get you there just fine.

The most common alternative is to purchase a 4-jaw chuck, such as the Nova G3 (which requires the appropriate insert), and also a set of pen drilling jaws and a drill chuck for the tailstock. That lets you drill blanks entirely on the lathe (and with better accuracy than a drill press IMO).

The downside is that the 4-jaw chuck, insert, jaws, and drill chuck collectively will cost damn near $200, which is a lot more than a cheap drill press. The upside is that the chuck is exactly what you will need if you decide to get deeper into turning and want to try bowls, boxes, and other things. Many of us already owned or planned to own a chuck, so the only real cost addition was the pen drilling jaws and the drill chuck.

> Pen turning attachments

  • Mandrel savers are a separate purchase.

  • Be warned that barrel trimmers are not universal, they come in different sizes and some pen kits use a sleeve to up-size the trimmer to fit the larger tube.

  • You can use epoxy or CA glue, whichever you prefer to glue tubes. If using CA glue, make sure you buy a spray bottle of accelerator so that you can zap the ends to prevent a dripping mess!

  • Any general sandpaper from a home improvement store will work fine, don't need anything fancy or expensive. Quite a few of us purchased the $40 box from Klingspor's which is enough sandpaper to last me several years.

  • A P100 filter dust mask is a good investment as well for safety gear.

  • FINISH: If you plan to use CA glue as your finish, you need a different viscosity (thin) than what you use to glue the tubes (thick). This means you need to buy two different bottles of CA and look into a pack of MicroMesh sanding pads for polishing the CA finish.

If you plan on using something else for the finish, make sure you buy what you need.

  • SAW: You need a way to cut pen blanks and trim off excess waste. If you don't own any cutting tools that are sufficient for the job, a cheap miter box will do the job just fine. Make sure you clamp the box and the blank down well before sawing!

Setting aside the question of "Is NBC protective gear worth the expense"... I think the best way to test, would be to wear and tighten the mask to fit, and then use something like banana oil or smelling salts to check for any leaks (assuming you are using P100 or better filters). As this blast-from-the-past website demonstrates: http://www.alpharubicon.com/basicnbc/gasmaskfit.htm

My understanding is that it takes a lot of time and regular training, to properly don NBC gear on short notice. A N95 or P100 dust mask or respirator, would definitely be helpful in the more common disasters (unrest, storms, flooding, etc). NBC protection requires a full suit, gloves, boots, etc. Would you have time to deploy all of that out of your car, before you are affected by a strike?

I don't know if I would trust old military gas masks, because you don't know how old they are, or what the storage conditions were. The savings would likely be eaten up by the uncertainty of getting old, expired, or ill-fitting gear. The stuff is surplus for a reason...

What hood do you have that your respirator doesn't fit? I have an ESAB Sentinel which is quite close fitting to the face and it fits just fine.

u/p2p_editor · 3 pointsr/woodworking

I love this kind with these filters.

3M makes a whole line of these respirators. I'm pretty sure the one linked here is the kind I got. It has a very soft, flexible silicone grommet that seals very effectively against my face and is incredibly comfortable. It vents your breath downward, so you don't fog up your glasses (a big concern with me). And the P100 filters with "nuisance level" organic protection reduce fumes from varnishes, solvents, etc., to the point where I literally cannot smell them.

Oh, and the whole get-up is really affordable, too.

u/AggressiveStation · 3 pointsr/metro

Question: If you want to hypothetically avoid nuclear fallout, can you just grab a 3M mask and some cheap filters and be right as rain? They would filter all the particulate. The rest of you would be toast without more PPE, of course.

As someone who's been living in Beijing for the past 3 years, yes, it's bad, but a lot of things that get posted about are embellished. That said, winter is worse because of municipal heating.

The spring days aren't nearly so bad. It's Los Angeles levels of air most of the time.

If you're worried go grab yourself one of these and a pair of these to keep your lungs clean. I personally use these. It might be rude to keep them on indoors, but unless you're at a high end office or shopping center the air is the same as outdoors. Hopefully your gf's relatives got IQAir, otherwise you're still SOL for like 75% of the time since I'm assuming you'll be indoors for the most part. You also can't have it on when eating, when the second hand smoke will get ya.

I'm glad people got you up to speed on carrying an approved TQ.

I have not see anyone mention where to actually get training, so here's a starting point:

https://www.bleedingcontrol.org/may/learn-how

I'm somewhat concerned with the O.C. spray, as according to their website "18% OC" isn't a thing. Major Capsinoids are what determines how effective OC is and nowhere do they mention what percentage of Major Capsinoids their spray contains. It cannot be 18% as the most effective sprays used by law enforcement (i.e. Sabre Red, etc) are at 1.33%. Get and carry Sabre Red. Problem solved. Do not get gel, unless you like the idea of waiting around for half a minute or so for the effects to manifest themselves. Gel has a much longer activation time and you lose the inhalation effects. Get a stream.

https://www.sabrered.com/formulations-heat-strength-and-law

Jabber. Likely worthless. Even if you know and are well-versed in kubotan techniques, they still aren't a worthwhile defensive tool because they can't cause enough pain or do enough damage to physically incapacitate a determined attacker. If you are looking for a defensive tool to carry in your hand, carry the spray.
Spray should be your first option for de-escalation and defense, after of course awareness and avoidance.

Lights. Invest in a quality light or three. Olight, Fenix, Streamlight and Surefire make excellent lights. I have a small Olight I3E on my key fob. It's an excellent emergency, always have it sort of little light.

OLIGHT 90 Lumens i3E EOS PMMA TIR Lens AAA Flashlight Compact Keychain Flashlite EDC Flashlight https://www.amazon.com/dp/B017R560WC/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_EGjADbR5HG387

The Streamlight Microstream is another excellent small light. I generally always have one of these as a spare in whatever bag I have on me.

https://www.streamlight.com/en/products/detail/index/microstream-usb

My main EDC lights are the Fenix PD36R, the Surefire EDCL-T2 and the Olight M2R Warrior. Both the SIIIR and S1 Baton from Olight are also excellent if you're looking for something slightly smaller.

Any of the above listed also make excellent headlamps. I also like Petzls and REI has some really good deals on them right now, like:

https://www.rei.com/product/109952/petzl-actik-headlamp-2018?CAWELAID=120217890003369271&CAGPSPN=pla&CAAGID=15724846360&CATCI=pla-401945114287&cm_mmc=PLA_Google%7C404_87834%7C1099520003%7Cnone%7C_kenshoo_clickid_%7Cpla-401945114287&lsft=cm_mmc:PLA_Google_LIA%7C404_87834%7C1099520003%7Cnone%7C_kenshoo_clickid_&kclid=_kenshoo_clickid_&gclid=Cj0KCQjw753rBRCVARIsANe3o45iZ9-_AWJCwfsv2DCPv-g9gKBl43-zL4-f2q64a7QpuSpCCfUYxM4aAqwHEALw_wcB

Strongly consider adding or swapping out your bandanas for actual N95 masks. N95 means they will filter 95% of particulates. There are N99 and N100 masks as well, but an N95 will be adequate for filtering out dust and smoke in almost all short term scenarios you might encounter.

https://www.uline.com/Product/Detail/S-19253/Dust-Masks-and-Respirators/Uline-N95-Deluxe-Industrial-Respirator-with-Valve?pricode=WB0200&gadtype=pla&id=S-19253&gclsrc=aw.ds&&gclid=Cj0KCQjw753rBRCVARIsANe3o47D97sqUmfEGAAcaoGf6Iccqth1ZbjT0Y0yC1sI8dVaA1drIuLSMO0aAlU5EALw_wcB

My last suggestion since you seem to be properly concerned with self defense is this:

Go find a Judo club or a jiu jitsu gym and train. Go once and then don't stop going. Any reputable club or gym will allow you to come in and audit a class or two for free. I've watched female whitebelts with 6 months of regular practice absolutely demolish big new guys coming into the gym.

That's great!

But, the rest of us aren't so confident about the Anet A8 seeing how there are multiple examples of them catching fire.

#1 2017

#2 2017

#3 2017

#4 2018

That's me taking 5 minutes. Actually I spent more time writing this than researching this. An exhaustive search would probably yield more and these are just the ones people are telling us about.

Maybe they can be made safe, but that needs to happen in the factory, not after the fact by the consumer who probably isn't an electrical engineer. You're not an electrical engineer are you?

Disclaimer: I'm not an expert. Take my advice at your own risk.

I don't know what's causing these fires. But, I've heard mention of mainboards and PSU's. You should probably take the task of heating off the mainboard and put it onto external mosfets for the hotend and the hotbed. You might also want to replace the factory power supply (PSU) with something more robust. As long as the A8 is 12 volts I'd probably suggest an ATX power supply conversion if you're handy with a soldering iron and feel confident you can do it. ATX power supplies come with a number of built-in safety features. Here's a wiki on choosing a PSU.

You might also want to add some basic fire suppression to your print area. This maybe would stop a fire, but it's not going to stop an electrical short creating heat and therefore acting as an ignition source. It might give you more time to react in the case that a fire does start.

Edit: I couldn't find the rating on the rangehood fire extinguisher so, this ball extinguisher that is ABC rated might be a better option if you can figure out how to suspend it above your printer which shouldn't be too hard as it comes with a metal stand.

I would definitely add a fire extinguisher nearby where you print.

Then add a fire alarm above your printer and in the adjacent room.

This is not just advice for you, but it's advice for anyone. I've done all three of the above suggestions. I've add the stove rangehood fire extinguisher. I've wall mounted a fire extinguisher in the adjacent room. I've also add two fire alarms, one above my printer and another in the adjacent room.

Be safe my friend and heed the warnings these multiple fires are broadcasting.

I was thinking about this today. But I had an idea. What if you made a holder for one of these at the top of the enclosure? https://www.amazon.com/Extinguisher-Suppression-Device-Safety-Product/dp/B01JVXFQ6E

u/FencingNerd · 3 pointsr/3Dprinting

If you're clever you could rig up an Arduino or Raspberry Pi as a smoke detector.

https://create.arduino.cc/projecthub/Aritro/smoke-detection-using-mq-2-gas-sensor-79c54a

Use a relay to control the power supply to the printer, if any smoke is detected the Arduino would immediately cut the power to the printer. At that point, the most critical thing is making sure there's minimal flammable material around the printer.

Alternatively, mount a fire ball above the printer in the enclosure. https://www.amazon.com/Extinguisher-Suppression-Device-Safety-Product/dp/B01JVXFQ6E

This is the respirator that I have and I love it (maybe more than I should). It's so comfortable that I can go a solid 6 hrs before I need to take it off. I do most of my work in a medium sized garage with poor ventilation (unless the door is open) and the difference in air quality it makes is rediculos. I could be hitting stuff with a grinder for a couple hours straight and the air smells just fine with the thing on, but as soon as I take it off, I would get a big face full of nasty air and put it back on, then open the garage door for a bit to air things out. I also use these filters for pretty much all of my dusty work. They're low profile and fit great under a face shield, but you'd probably need something different if you wanted protection from fumes.

u/Seogege · 2 pointsr/AutoDetailing

I learned about PPE from the perspective of a woodworker, which has some overlap with detailing in terms of PPE when it comes to chemicals. Woodworkers commonly wear half mask respirators (I use this model from 3M) and then swap in filters for whatever they're doing at the moment. I wear that respirator for many hours at a time and it's very comfortable to wear and use. Just make sure to get one that fits your face shape and size, and to keep facial hair to a minimum.

As for filters, I use P100 filters for getting rid of particulate matter, in our case fine wood dust, which might be less relevant for detailing since particulates from abrasion typically get trapped in water or polish. They have some degree of organic vapor relief but it's not good enough if you're spraying paint or working with strong chemicals. For those, I use a dedicated organic vapor cartridge like this one.

There may be some better dedicated filter cartridges to use since 3M has a pretty wide product range, but that respirator's definitely a good one from my experience.

First Alert (very common manufacturer of detectors) has a zwave alarm for $39 on amazon. I think contractor grade alarms are $10, so not a huge cost....at least compared to going with Nest.

I lost everything when my house burned down completely, so I'm a bit more paranoid about it than the avg. person. Fire marshal said that it had started hours before it was reported (I lived in area with 1/2 acre lots, so neighbors weren't exactly close, but weren't far either). Now I have the option to call a neighbor and ask them to go check on things if I get an alert.

Well, there is of course the Nest Protect, which is wifi-based. No web interface, and requires their app to set up. It can be configured out of the box to email you alerts, and the alert settings are configurable (email vs text vs app notification, and for which alerts/conditions).

There is also the First Alert Smoke/CO Combo, which is Z-Wave based. Again, no web interface. You would rely on your hub for configuring your notifications.

May I suggest this to go on the keychain loop of the SAK?

u/_024 · 2 pointsr/EDC

Keep it light, keep it simple.

  • Knife: CRKT Squit ($16)

This small knife does the job without taking up much bulk in your pocket or EDC. And if you misplace it, it won't cost an arm and a leg to replace.

  • Light: Olight i3E ($10)

This light is fairly bright and is easy to use. Twist on/off. No fancy modes with this light. Waterproof and shock resistant in a compact package that runs on just a AAA battery. Also easy to replace if it mysteriously disappears.

  • Pen: Pilot G2 ($11 for 12 pack, around $1 per pen)

This pen doesn't need much of a story. It's cheap. It writes smooth. It conquers.

  • Watch: Casio W800H-1AV ($12)

This is a nice little watch for the price. It's tough and tells the time even in harsh conditions. If you somehow manage to break it or the battery dies, it's not going to break the bank to replace.

Don't carry much in the wallet department so a rubber band or binder clip would do the job. That'd be less than $0.10. Do the math!

So that's a grand total of $50. Excluding a phone or CCW since OP stated that isn't affected.

Not bad for a few quality items that will get you through a day to day basis easily.

    Sorry if I missed anything!

Edit: Added a watch to the mix. Added descriptions for all items. Formatting!
u/NullOverflow · 2 pointsr/ProtectAndServe

OP, IMHO, your best bet is going to be learning what to look for before the mugger picks you as a target. Once the person is intent on assaulting you physically, the best tool at that point is going to be a firearm, or maybe a fix blade knife if they got that close to you.

Situational awareness, pre-assault cues/indicators, verbal judo. Learn them, study them, master them. The fight you will win is a fight that you never get yourself into.

If you are out after dark often, have a good flashlight with you. Not one of those $5 walmart/gas station specials. A small, compact streamlight or Surefire is worth its weight in gold in dark situation to let you see what they are doing, and in a worst-case scenario, take away the attacker(s) ability to see what they are doing.

If you do change your mind to get a firearm, invest in good, quality training. Go beyond your state-mandated CCW course. Learn when or when not to use your gun, and even better, learn how to use the gun. But remember, if you get to the point to use that gun, you already lost half the battle.

The Streamlight Protac 1L-1AA is currently $43 on Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/Streamlight-88061-ProTac-Professional-Tactical/dp/B01G75P1SC

u/rsh2k1 · 2 pointsr/ar15

I've actually mounted a ProTac 1L-1AA ($38) to a Frank Proctor Light Mount ($59). It's not "M-Lok" per se, since it mounts to pic rails, but (a) you can mount to the top rail of the handguard, or (b) get a short rail section. I figured that's all I need for a 8" AR pistol for home defense needs.

I could see doing the same with a ProTac 2L-X for longer rifles to keep everything cheap and lightweight.

u/YoureAMigraine · 2 pointsr/antiMLM

Amazon is helpful here. I would advise getting two things: a reliable, bright flashlight, and strong pepper gel.

For the flashlight, I recommend a Streamlight Protac 1L-1AA (https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01G75P1SC/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_9ia.Bb301STP9) or the Streamlight Protac 2-LX (https://www.amazon.com/dp/B06WD29DZ8/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_xka.Bb703WW4V).

There are a lot of good lights out there, but these two models are excellent and should meet the needs of most people. The 2-LX is bigger, brighter, and can use rechargeable batteries. However, the 1L-1AA has the advantage of being smaller. Both can easily fit in a pocket or purse.

Here’s a video review if the 2-LX: https://youtu.be/j_7RfUFYblU

Here’s a video comparing the two: https://youtu.be/vythpZUBab8

For the pepper gel, I recommend Sabre Red (https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01AT3LMP4/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_6ga.BbRKDF9CK). It has good range, is super hot, and this kit comes with a practice unit.

u/QWOP_Expert · 2 pointsr/wheredidthesodago

I haven't used Klarus myself, but they appear to be similar to EagleTac and Fenix which are decent flashlights, although a bit overkill for most people.

I have a few Streamlight and Surefire lights which I am very happy with. Usually, if someone is looking to get a decent flashlight which isn't too expensive and will last a long time, I'd point them in the direction the Protac 1L-1AA, since CR123/18650 batteries can be hard to find/expensive in stores and it can use AA batteries in a pinch.

Most people don't really need a flashlight brighter than around 200 lumens, so a lot of these extreme lumen models are a bit overkill. Not to mention that usually with a lower lumen light the battery will last a lot longer.

u/GrandfatherRat · 2 pointsr/ar15

You’re ready to go then! For a budget light that’s reliable, I like this entry level streamlight. I have one on my 590a1, it will do fine on an AR. You will still need a compatible mount.

I happened to see this while I was browsing around on Tindie the other day. You might be interested. https://www.tindie.com/products/niujl123/shut-down-3d-printer-by-smoke-detector/

I like the enthusiasm but honestly it's probably easier and safer to use existing solutions: put one of those extinguisher bombs on top of the printer (eg. https://www.amazon.com/Extinguisher-Suppression-Device-Safety-Product/dp/B01JVXFQ6E ) which should handle the fire and wake the neighborhood at the same time, and make sure your smoke alarms batteries are good.

u/Roboticide · 2 pointsr/3Dprinting

Yeah, I'll probably look into a cutoff as well.

>Something like the AFO Fireball

Holy fuck, this thing?!?

>when it comes into contact with fire and disperses non-toxic chemicals to extinguish the flames in an area with a radius ranging between 86 to 107 square feet.

This exploding in an enclosed structure of approximately 8 cubic feet would definitely put out any fire. It'd probably blow out the enclosure as well, but hey, no fire.

I might see if there's a smaller one. Definitely seems more useful than the stovetop one.

EDIT: Interesting thought though, if you mounted the AFO ball with a 3D printed plastic mount to the top of an enclosure, the heat would probably melt the plastic enough to drop the ball directly onto the fire before the fire got big enough to ignite it normally. Putting it out earlier.

u/redhandfilms · 2 pointsr/ender3

Fire Extinguisher Ball on Amazon.

Here is the one I got. It comes with a little stand that I just zip-tied on top of my printer. It's basically a ball wrapped in a fuse with a fire-cracker and extinguishing powder inside. Flames touch the fuse and the thing explodes (small, safe, youtubers have set them off in their hands) and sprays fire extinguishing powder everywhere.

u/Tre_Walker · 2 pointsr/microgrowery

Lights, fans, cooling, heating all contribute to your amperage pulled and this is the number the breaker uses to determine overload. Running a 5x5 space with 2 QB + COB+smaller lights on my veg space + intake and exhaust fans+ pumps etc and am pulling 800 to 1000 watts at any one time about 8-9 amps on a 15 amp breaker. I also have an AC and dehumidifier unit which pulls 8-10 amps by itself and there fore must go on another circuit. I could not run all that unless I split it up.

My point is don't underestimate TOTAL usage by just assuming lights are the only draw and yes buy a kill-a-watt meter it is very useful if you have any doubts. Also be sure the breaker you think it is is the one that it actually are using by plugging something into it and shutting the breaker off.

It is possible to do what you want on 10 but for me that would be cutting it close depending on peripherals. You can also tap into that 220v? dryer oulet but that is a longer topic.

Fire is a real concern for growers. I read an article on it last night but cant find it now but I am wanting to buy one of these now https://www.amazon.com/Extinguisher-Suppression-Device-Safety-Product/dp/B01JVXFQ6E/

u/wittless · 2 pointsr/functionalprint

Interesting. This might be useful to mount above the 3d printer with one of these in case a fire ever broke out.

fire suppression ball

u/enjoyitalready · 2 pointsr/GoRVing

Interesting! Wonder how well they perform in an enclosed area like an RV or room. A fire extinguisher directs the chemical directly at where the user aims it. This is beneficial that the user won't inhale whatever chemicals are being deployed. The AFO fire ball does a 360 so it hits everything, which has its benefits, but I'm guessing you end up inhaling a lot of this product.

Amazon link to the AFO: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01JVXFQ6E/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_LNN9ybY2MW84W

Obviously the lack of fire is the best option in these scenarios, in my non fire professional opinion.

These remind me of the fire ropes too, can't find the link right now though.

Edit found the link to BlazeCut, doesn't appear on Amazon any more for some reason tho: https://jogrusa.com/products/blazecut-fire-suppression-system

u/Tekpc007 · 2 pointsr/3Dprinting

Very good post ! and you broke some very common sense rules. Smoke detector next to the printer is a must with a fire extinguisher close by! I print overnight and remotely with octoprint , have a wifi cam on my printer and a wifi power outlet so i can shutdown remotely . In the process now of rebuilding my cr10s control box to go into a PC case with a safer PC ATX power supply and better mosfets , better wiring . You really do have to check every single part of a new printer and make sure every screw is tight and inspect all parts about every month , its a must ! this is how you find bad wires, heat damage and faulty loose parts. The quality of these printers coming from china is always suspect , they don't have the same rules about safety and quality of electrical parts , especially these cheap power supplies.

these a good to have next to a printer .

  1. Octoprint and a webcam and I check on things regularly during the day
  2. 18” ceramic floor tiles from Lowes (fireproof) that my printers sit on
  3. Fire retardant enclosure (mine is made from some fire resistant drywall I had from another project.

I’ve also considered sticking a “fireball” in the enclosure but haven’t done so yet.

I use this flashlight. Mostly on trails. I carry it in my forward most hand. This allows you to point the light around turns. Having a light mounted on your board will not allow you to see where you are carving to. Board mounted lights are only good to help you to be seen. Terrible for actually riding. It is rechargeable by a Android cord.

So, I do not have one to trade or anything, but before you order one, I will share this. I researched the uc35 for hours. Read on all the forums, looking at every comparable light that met the criteria as you listed. The conclusion that people kept leading me to was to forget the Fenix altogether, and get a ThruNite. The quality of construction is significantly better, the light is brighter, the light modes are more usable and varied. Plus, it's cheaper. I now have 2 of them, and after using them, 2 of my buddies ordered themselves one as well. I highly recommend it over the Fenix, and in this size and class, I think it really shines. Link for lazy. Get the $65 V2, and I personally prefer the neutral white version (NW) over the blue tint cool white (CW).

u/Astec123 · 2 pointsr/policeuk

I had a Peli torch which was a gift on leaving my old job, it lasted less than a year before it got broken in a scrap and has languished in my box of kit I no longer use or is broken ever since.

Afterwards I replaced it with a ThruNite 3C V2 which cost me very little overall, added a clickfast torch holder to it and it offers the best of both worlds as it has a 0.1lumen mode which is great for PNB entries. Plus up to a high level of lumens for actual work when on duty conducting searches, or simply as a light to see where you are going in the pitch black without having to hold a torch. This has actually worked in my favour a few times because I can get to other kit like cuffs and see what I am doing clearly hands free.

I've linked to the new version below. Call out to /r/flashlight as a good place to review for ideas but I would suggest any 18650 or other small rechargeable option would be a good shout provided it has a quick access low power mode and some other higher power modes too as a good fit for a vest.

The Sofirn SP10S is high CRI and single AA or 14500. But I dislike hold to turn off, and you may dislike the side switch for the modes.

Alternatively the C01S is single AAA, twist head, and high CRI. This one is extremely pocket friendly, but battery life is limited and not everyone likes the twist head.

The only perfect fit for your description, that I know of, is also a bit of a luxury light. The Reylight Pineapple is high CRI and tail switch only. It’s also made of solid brass. This thing is highly regarded and three times the price of a SP10S. But it’ll do ya good.

u/dubyrunning · 1 pointr/flashlight

How loose/tight-fitting is your clothing, and how much do your pockets show beneath your shirt? That's going to affect how large the light can be before you or others notice it. For some people and their style of dress, a light that runs on an 18650 battery wouldn't be noticeable, while others would need a AA or even AAA sized light.

AAA/10440 Lights

If you're interested in not having the light visibly print in your pocket at all, like I was in choosing an EDC, and your clothes are relatively slim fitting, you're probably going to want a AAA/10440 sized light (10440 is the lithium ion version of a AAA sized battery, and produces brighter output but less runtime than a typical AAA alkaline, NiMH, or lithium primary battery).

I went with the Folomov EDC C1. It's got a coated brass body, warm light, and very high CRI (meaning it helps show colors better than low CRI lights). It clips tightly inside the front pocket or coin pocket and takes up very little space. I've been very much enjoying mine without issue, though others have had quality control issues where the emitter burnt out or developed a dead spot, so unless those issues are sorted out, your mileage may vary.

If you want something in the AAA size specifically from Amazon, the Ultratac K18 would probably serve you quite well.

AA/14500 Lights

If you're willing to go up to AA/14500 sized light, the Thrunite Archer 1A V3 might be a good choice. Runs on either AA or 14500 battery. Has a sub-lumen firefly mode for preserving night vision, and goes up to 200 lumens with a AA battery. I don't know how much brighter it would be with a 14500 battery, but you can typically expect two to three times brighter, though with shorter run times. 200 lumens is typically enough for most tasks, though you might appreciate the extra brightness if you were looking around outdoors.

18650 Lights

If you're willing to go up to an 18650 sized light, the Thrunite TC15 would likely be a great choice. It gets incredibly bright for a 1x 18650 light, at up to 2300 lumens, but has well spaced lower modes for everyday use as well. It looks like currently only the cool white version is available on Amazon it. Most people, myself included, prefer neutral to warm white because it looks better, and produces less backscatter in particulates in the air.

I think a little more information about your intended use of the light and how you'd like to carry it would help us make good recommendations. Good luck on the search!

EDIT: Also, another user asked a good question about what you mean by "rechargeable." Do you mean that you just plug the light in without taking the battery out, or do you mean the battery is rechargeable and you can put it in a charger? There are plenty of excellent chargers at places like illumn.com that will open up a whole new realm of possibilities for flashlights, so the small up-front investment is usually worth it.

Woooo!

Not sure how the $15 limit on international shipping applies, is it included in the $52 or on top of that (total of $67)? Asking because I couldn't find anything with shipping under $15 to Finland..

Anyways, If I limit to max of $52, this Nitecore Tini fits the bill at $29.99 and $19.00 shipping (total: $48.99): https://www.amazon.com/NITECORE-Metallic-Rechargeable-Keychain-Eco-Sensa/dp/B077PC43TC/?tag=parametrek-20

If the total limit is $67, I have a hard time choosing between the Rovyvon Aurora A8 and Nitecore NU25, but maybe the hiker in me would approve the headlamp more as I already have a pretty good EDC in the Nitecore Tip CRI.. So, NU25, $36.95 and $27.26 shipping (total $64.21): https://www.amazon.com/Nitecore-NU25-Rechargeable-Headlamp-Yellow/dp/B078PH9DCB/?tag=parametrek-20

Edit: Actually looks like if you go down enough in price, so does the shipping. As I don't have any AAA lights, the Thrunite Ti3 NW might be interesting.. $13.95 and $13.17 shipping: https://www.amazon.com/ThruNite-Ti3-XP-G2-Neutral-White/dp/B00EC0FY1O/?tag=parametrek-20

EDIT: It looks like there are 2 different versions of the SP36S. One is $60 and one is $80.

This one for $60: https://smile.amazon.com/Powerful-Flashlight-Rechargeable-Brightest-Batteries/dp/B07TXDV1ND/ref=sr_1_1?keywords=Sofirn+SP36S&qid=1574720491&sr=8-1

Is the BLF version worth $20 more? If so, why? And is the battery life runtime on the High and Turbo settings on these two flashlights going to be impressive, compared to the Catapult V6, FT03 and GT Mini?

The easiest recommendation is to have an actual particle mask fitted well like this one NOT A PAINT MASK, and do it outside. Make sure you don't sand through any traces!

If you cannot go outside for some reason, do it in the bathroom with the hot shower running. this lets water bind to the particles and settles them quickly, but they'll still be in your house, so I'd really recommend you go outside.

The flip side is just sand or melt the plastic a bit. I never modify PCBs, I just modify the case :)

u/swiggzter · 1 pointr/breakingbad

I bought a cheap hazmat suit (I couldn't find yellow without dumb shit all over it) and respirator (I know, not a full mask but I'm a broke-ass college student).

Can't find glasses for shit though.

u/ronenvelarde · 1 pointr/DIY

Damn, you need to address that right away. As a contractor, I can tell you mold is extremely dangerous. It's also a good reason to not do it yourself. Spores are very durable and you can easily track them throughout your house or worse if you have a forced air heating system. If you cut a hole in the wall cavity and see water damage and mold then make sure you wear a proper mask before doing any work, http://www.amazon.com/3M-6391-P100-Reusable-Respirator/dp/B001NDN29O/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1458778240&sr=8-2&keywords=p100

u/gthing · 1 pointr/SaltLakeCity

This really depends on a lot of things. The kitchen is usually the primary source of indoor air pollution. I have a PM2.5 monitor and cooking bacon and eggs puts it off the chart. It's extremely important to have good ventilation when you cook (which most kitchens don't have). I've also encountered terrible indoor air quality around town in restaurants, etc.

If you live in Salt Lake and don't want to die young a HEPA filter is a sound investment. They are not crazy expensive and I've verified with my particulate counter that they do work very well. I have purchased probably a dozen of this one because its cheap and effective but there are other options that are more quiet. I have two in my home and the rest around the office or given away to friends. They have an updated model that I have not used here. I will sometimes travel with one if its convenient.

While I'm on the subject. This is unrelated to what you said but here is some more pertinent info about Utah air quality:

Car air filters surprisingly do a good job and I read very low pm2.5 concentrations even when driving down i-15 on an inversion day in traffic, but there are also air scrubbers designed to run off the 12v in your car.

If you're going outside for longer than 15 minutes and especially if you are exercising, wear a P100 rated mask such as this one.

During inversion season I take my air quality meter around and test all over the place and post the results to twitter if anyone is interested. The numbers reported by the state are accurate in the sense that they give a baseline by which to measure trends over time, but they are completely inaccurate in terms of what you will actually encounter when you go outside. You can expect to encounter up to DOUBLE what the state reports. A local hero has set up a network of sensors that will give you a better idea of what is going on. You can find the info at purpleair.org you can also host your own sensor.

Thousands of people are dying each year due to our poor air quality. It is taking YEARS off of our lives. So the last thing I'm going to say is please support initiatives to expand public and alternative transportation, promote clean energy, and to eliminate major sources of pollution in the valley. Demand from your candidates that they make air quality a priority. Other cities around the world have made real positive impacts on their air quality just by trying, so it's not impossible.

u/elliotj · 1 pointr/DIY

I had exactly the same issue & did the abatement project myself. The tiles tested between 9% & 11% chrysotile. If you choose to lift them up obviously you want to do so without breaking them but use of a 3M mask & P100 filter suffices for protection this sort of friable (crumbly) material becoming an airborne hazard. I lifted tiles with a tile chipper (not ideal but the adhesive was a real bugger). Next step is liberal use of an asbestos surfactant like Fiberlock for the cleanup.

http://www.amazon.com/3M-6391-P100-Reusable-Respirator/dp/B001NDN29O

http://www.fiberlock.com/asbestos/6450.html

Your local landfill will have protocol for disposing of asbestos and you'll have to contact them. See your local Acklands Grainger type of outlet for the yellow asbestos 6mm poly bags they request you use (often double-bagged is the policy).

Your local industrial lab type place will be able to come and do a spot check & air clearance test to quell your fears about how good of a job you did. I left a table out during the process and left the 3' surface undisturbed while moving it around the work area as required - I had them take the spot test on that table in addition to the air clearance test. All was well below acceptable exposure levels - < .01% particulate matter was asbestos.

Leave them down if possible. The risk is there but it's manageable. The truth is, it's safe material as long as you don't bust the tiles - sealing it really isn't necessary. Something more cost effective (and quicker) than epoxy would be a rolled commercial PCB flooring product which is glued down and glued together laterally at the seams.

Cheers.

> Something tells me that car exhaust, brake dust, indoor pollutants and all other the crap that we breathe may be problematic:

I think this is known. Perhaps not by the general public, but we have done a lot in the last few decades to improve the air quality in our homes and workplaces.

You mentioned truckers... emissions on cars and trucks are way stricter than they used to be and OSHA has a whole set of regulations regarding diesel exhaust:
https://www.osha.gov/dts/hazardalerts/diesel_exhaust_hazard_alert.html

There is ever increasing regulation on the use of respirators on job sites and it seems like every year there is a new set of chemicals that are banned from use or tightly controlled (asbestos, VOCs...).

Also, you can't buy a house anymore without having a radon test done.

The general message is: be mindful of what you breath. Whenever you are in a dusty environment, you should ware one of these, at a minimum, with the correct filter: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001NDN29O/ref=ox_sc_act_title_2?ie=UTF8&psc=1&smid=A1T2QV8RUJMJWO

There are masks you can buy, the filters however have to be replaced often and they can be quite expensive, but if you plan on staying in Jerusalem, then I guess you have no other choice.

https://www.amazon.com/3M-Disposable-Particulate-Respirator-Exhalation/dp/B001BXRRH4

This one is relatively cheap and is a p100 mask, meaning it should filter at least 99.97% of airborne particles to be certified as such. You may need to adjust it though so that it fits properly, any mask will be useless if the fit is not correct for your face.

https://www.amazon.ca/3M-2097-Particulate-Filter/dp/B00328IAO0/ref=pd_lpo_vtph_328_bs_lp_t_1?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1&refRID=518B5SNTGTSPTRE1KCPE

I have no advice lol. Only my recent experience. Keep in mind this is for a kid who already sleeps through the night (i.e. 8pm-6am... sorry).

So: our LO is 4.5 mo and we just traveled to San Francisco for five days (3hrs behind us here on the East Coast). We didn't prep anything...we just kinda went with it.

His bedtime is usually at around 8pm. In general while on the trip, he got cranky/tired right on time at around 5pm. We basically treated it as moving naptime and got him to fall asleep in the stroller or carrier. We either had a bottle with us or I found a quiet place to pop him on the boob to help soothe him. Then, we kept him out with us asleep in the stroller and just got him in his pack and play whenever we got back to our hotel at night. We were there for a wedding so we really had no choice and had to keep him w/ us for rehearsal dinner, ceremony, etc.

Because he was out with us I don't think he necessarily slept as hard as he would in his crib at home, but he was tired so he was still sleeping harder than just a regular nap. Pro tip: bring some noise canceling headphones in case you're at a loud venue like a wedding and want him to sleep longer.

Because he wasn't sleeping as hard, he'd usually wake up naturally as we were getting back to the hotel (no later than 9 or 10pm). We'd change him into his pj's, play for about 20min, breastfeed, read a book, and then try to get him back to sleep in the pack n play. In my mind we were trying to get him into the mindset of "bedtime" so he'd sleep longer.

Whatever the cause, it worked and he got usually a full nights sleep and was up at about 6am every morning.

For whatever reason, he definitely got tired/cranky 3 hours earlier (i.e. right on time w his east coast bedtime), but did not affect his wake-up time in the morning. He still woke up at about 6am. I think it's because we weren't truly putting him in "bed" at 5pm, we kept him out in the stroller.

u/BriefcaseCat · 1 pointr/homeautomation

Assuming you are using Z-Wave:

Hard-wired Interconnected, Z-Wave Smoke/CO detectors don't exist to my knowledge. First Alert has one that has wireless interconnections.

You could get creative with some cheap door contacts and utilize the on-board alarm relays of conventional smoke/co detectors.

I think the best return on your money is figuring out what is causing the false alarms.

Some guidelines that deal with common false alarms:

  • Kitchens, Bathrooms, the areas immediately outside kitchen/bathrooms, Furnace/Boiler Rooms - Use Heat and CO detection only.
  • Move any smoke detector that is in path of any air supply vents or returns.
  • Large temperature swings can cause false alarms in most detectors (front of doors leading to the outside or garage).
  • Having detectors in areas that get below freezing or above 100F.
  • If you have an open floor plan, that complicates smoke/air propagation from the kitchen and bathrooms.
u/h_bar · 1 pointr/3Dprinting

I would think something like this automatic extinguisher to actually deal with any fire that might have spread to anything combustible plus some kind of wifi/zwave/etc enabled smoke detector, a home automation hub, and a toggle-able outlet to kill the power and prevent any continuous ignition source.

Personally, I recently got a Smart Things Hub and have been considering something like this smoke alarm with one of the many toggle-able outlets. Smart Things allows you to setup rules and what not so if the alarm goes off, power down the outlet. There might be cheaper/better options but that's what fits in with my home automation equipment.

Have you considered SafeAwake?

Personally, I have First Alert ZCOMBO and a separate Z-wave strobe/siren.

Nest protects Barely Go on Sale. I've seen Protects go for ridiculously cheap at walmart, but thats cuz they were discontinuing the stock on shelf. Aside from that, Protect go $80 to $100 average on Ebay/Offerup/Craigslist. If you aren't a nest Fan Boy, you can go with a $30 First alert Zwave smoke/carbon alarm. https://www.amazon.com/First-Alert-Z-Wave-Detector-Monoxide/dp/B00KMHXFAI I was looking at the insurance Discount, but for Us, Liberty mutual had a higher Monthly rate, didn't justify the swap just for a smoke detector.

u/fps81 · 1 pointr/homeautomation

I have 2 bedrooms and a bathroom at the top of my stairs, so I ended up having to pull the plug on all 3 of those detectors before it shut up, plus the one at the bottom of the stairs, and the one in the living room. I think the smoke wafted past all 5 over the 10 minutes, and they were all pissed off. I have high ceilings and an open balcony between the first and second floor, so smoke travels upstairs quick.

I bought one of the First Alert ZWave detectors, (https://www.amazon.com/First-Alert-Z-Wave-Carbon-Monoxide/dp/B00KMHXFAI) but I couldn't get any software to actually interface with it, and the ZWave documentation is sparse. As far as I can tell, it only sends ZWave alerts, it doesn't respond to any commands.

u/massahwahl · 1 pointr/homeautomation

We got ours 4 years ago, I don't remember seeing combined detectors back then but to be honest I don't know that I would have ever looked. I WANTED a smart solution although when looking at the prices for these units now I found a ZWave compatible dual unit for $50... Definitely makes me reconsider what units to get when I convert my other ones...

Edit: For anyone interested here is the Z-Wave one

Using floss might work to bulk up the O-ring, but it'll remove any water resistance that might be left. Finding a fresh or slightly larger O-ring would be more reliable.

If you haven't done so, you should post on /r/flashlight using the guided request form to specify what you're looking for in a flashlight. There are literally thousands of flashlights to choose from, but if you know what features you're looking for or avoiding, we can help you narrow that down quickly. Yes its true if wood is around or any flammable material it would be wise to take precautions. However remember that you will never really exceed 275°C when printing and most fires with 3D printers happen due the heater cartridge falling out or when the wrong mosfets are installed on the electronics board. If however you really want to be safe install this fire ball extinguisher on top of your 3D printer:

https://www.amazon.com/Extinguisher-Suppression-Device-Safety-Product/dp/B01JVXFQ6E

The downside of this ball is that a false positive alarm will cost you your printer. A thermal camera or a smoke detector connected to the PSU will trigger when the fire already happened. This means you have to extinguish the fire yourself and If you are not close by this might be an issue.

u/sacrilegious · 1 pointr/3Dprinting

Get one of these single-use flame extinguishing balls:

u/engineered16 · 1 pointr/3Dprinting

Smoke alarm, webcam, and fire extinguisher nearby, but most importantly it's in an area where it could burn to the ground and not set the rest of the house on fire.

Ideally the smoke alarm should be tied to a smart outlet that the printer is plugged into, so it can automatically shut down.

You could also set one of these automatic extinguishers over your printer.

u/secretspy711 · 1 pointr/hobbycnc

A simple, cheap enclosure is not difficult to build. I wouldn't let the lack of an enclosure restrict your choice. Carvey and Nomad are good choices, but I'd argue that a Shapeoko3 might be a better value because of its more powerful spindle and motors, and larger work area. The primary drawback of the Shapeoko 3, in my opinion, is the fact that it uses V wheels instead of real linear bearings, which means swarf can collect on the rails and wheels, and cause some problems, and they need to be adjusted properly. If you are interested in a 5-axis machine, there's the PocketNC although it's a bit of a step up in price at about $5,000+, and the work area is smaller, but you can do more complex parts. You didn't say what your budget was, but at that price, you are starting to get into range of a "real" machine such as a Tormach 440, but I'm not sure if that meets your portability requirements. You say you want it to be somewhat portable, which means lightweight, but generally the heavier the machine is, the more performance you'll get out of it. Rigidity is the name of the game in machining. Also consider the fact that after you buy the machine, you will need to spend some money on some endmills, so leave room in the budget for that.

Another thing that you need to understand is that CNC's are inherently more dangerous than 3D printers. It's not advisable to "set it and forget it" like you do with 3D printers that you let run overnight. People's shops/houses have burned down because of their unattended CNC. There are some simple fire suppression systems you can put in the enclosure, but nothing beats a human standing by, ready to hit the emergency stop button.

Also, a CNC does not quite have the same learning curve as a 3D printer to use it successfully, and it also costs more to operate. Most people can get onboard with the fact that they have to pay for 3D printer filament since it's a consumable. But it's a different dynamic when it comes to endmills. Endmills get dull or broken and need to be replaced. They need to be considered consumables too. And you need to have a decent variety of endmills on hand, with some backups. And you should have someone inspect the machine and tools on a regular basis. There is a Shapeoko3 in the employee makerspace here at my work, but every time I've been down there, I give it a little jiggle and it's apparent that the V wheels are not adjusted properly. New users wouldn't know to look for that.

u/Gback · 1 pointr/SelfDefense

Alright, I suggest something like this. It's has 900 lumens, it's IP65, it has a rechargeable battery, it has a head that appears to be capable of delivering impacts, and at $25 USD, it is easily replaceable.
