Like I said, might as well not have a textbook at that point. Those half assed textbooks are probably way more expensive to "design", print, lacquer, bind, package and ship than it is to distribute an Ebook digitally. Hell in many instances, a computer or tablet is actually cheaper for a college student than a textbook is.

For instance as of me typing this, I can get This 10 inch ASUS Zenpad for less than half of the described price of that half assed textbook in question, which is far and away more capable and can serve as a multipurpose tool in a college environment. i.e. taking notes, recording schedules, keeping track of assignments, et cetera.

I'd say cut your losses at this point, textbook publishers.

Not trying to sound rude, but I think your options are fairly limited for your budget at least in my opinion. But here's what I could find, if it helps when I searched for 'best gaming tablets 2019'. I only listed what I could find under $200 as I didn't want to come off rude and go above your budget.

The items listed below are not listed in terms of performance.

Amazon Fire HD 10 - New - Priced $99.99 (Prime Day Deal). (32GB Storage).

Amazon Fire HD 10 - Certified Refurbished - Priced $79.99. (32GB Storage).

Lenovo Tab 4 - New - Priced $119.00. (16GB Storage).

Samsung Galaxy Tab A 8.0 - New - Priced $119.99. (16GB Storage).

Samsung Galaxy Tab A 8.0 - New - Priced $197.99. (32GB Storage).

As others have said, if you can save a bit more you will have better options. Me personally I'm an iOS guy. You can get an iPad (Latest Model for $249 with 32GB Storage. Or if you were able to get your budget even higher you can get a latest model iPad for $329 on sale with 128GB Storage.

u/hellohammerhead · 7 pointsr/technology

Can you elaborate on how Honeycomb is like Windows, in a bad way? Is in the bar at the bottom?

Also, just to let you know, the Xoom ($479, 32 GB wifi), Transformer ($394, 16 GB wifi), Acer Iconia ($355) are all $100+ cheaper than the comparble iPad model. Whether or not any of these tablets are actually better than the iPad is up to the consumer to decide (I personally prefer my Transformer over my old iPad 1, but to each his own).

u/Snip-Snap · 6 pointsr/gadgets

Just buy a mobile device that's wifi only. It will work, just don't buy it through a cell carrier.

Here's a pretty decent wifi only 7" Samsung Galaxy 2 for $170

This is a bit late, but here goes nothing:

Listen man, steer clear of the iPad in college. It can only do one thing at once, making it a total travesty to a busy college student. In my case, at least, I believe I found the perfect replacement.

Just last month I sold my 4th generation iPad because I found that I wasn't using it at all for my studies and it just sat there collecting dust. After some research online, I decided to get another tablet. This time I wanted one that could actually be useful in my college studies. Enter the Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1

I bought it refurbished off amazon for a good price, just to test it out and see if it was any good. It didn't take long for the new tablet to just outright replace half my backpack:

  • I stopped needing to take my notebooks to my classes. The S-Note application paired with the S-Pen (mind you the tablet has a built in Wacom digitizer) is a beautiful writing tool (or even typing, if you prefer so), and everything can be exported to Evernote in PDF format for organization and accessibility

  • The multitasking is a beautiful and crucial feature: I'm able to have a tutorial YouTube video, S-Note, and a calculator open all at once on the screen. I can have literally nothing on my table but this tablet and successfully teach myself just about anything. In addition, there's this feature where you can be looking at a picture on the browser, and you decide you want that picture in your notes. You can simply drag and drop the image into your notes and there it is.

  • The battery lasts me about 9 hours of screen on time with HEAVY use (notetaking, videos, multitasking, vewing large PDF's or powerpoints) which is enough to get most people through the day

  • I can just download the PDFs of my instructors worksheets and mark them up directly on the tablet, and then print out the solved worksheet. It's ridiculously efficient and saves me a lot of time and effort. If I make a mistake? Big deal; erase and correct it. Simple as that

Aside from that, the tablet has a very large and beautiful display, making it a very good option for watching movies or Netflix in your downtime. Gaming performance is pretty beast as well. It is without a doubt, a college students best friend, and I highly recommend you at least check it out.

I did, however, end up returning the tablet. Not because I wasn't happy, rather, the opposite. I was so ridiculously pleased with it that I just scrounged up whatever I have left in my allowance account to get the Samsung Galaxy Note Pro 12.2. It's basically similar to the Note 10.1 in every way except:

  • The display is significantly larger. It is about the size of a full 11x9 inch notebook, making it a lot more comfortable to write on. The display resolution is the same as the Note 10.1, but despite the extra screen real estate it is still clear as day with about 250 ppi

  • It has a bigger battery, meaning it should be able to push me through the day and more

  • The Note 10.1 allows multitasking by having 2 large applications open side by side, as well as a small collection of 'mini apps' that can hover on top of the applications (eg. Calculator or a YouTube video). The Note Pro 12.2 allows up to 4 large applications to run all at once plus those mini-apps.

These tablets have shown me just how useless an iPad is as a college companion. Steer clear of it. Look at the Note. Best of luck in college!

I can use it to keep my running records, assess students, and a million other things that would make my life a LOT easier.

This book is called "I Have the Right to Be a Child" and I would love it for my classroom. I teach in a therapeutic environment and many of my students do not believe they have rights. :) "C'mon...gimme."

I'll post a few Android tablets and you be the judge of which one you'd like to investigate further:

1: ASUS Eee Pad Transformer TF101-A1 = $379.99

2: MOTOROLA XOOM = $419.99

3: Original Samsung Galaxy Tab = $314.95

4: Samsung Galaxy Tab 7.0 Plus = $399.99

5: Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 = $479.99

Edit: As someone else mentioned, the Transformer Prime is almost out and it might be exactly what you're looking for. If you don't want to spend $500+ on the Transformer Prime though, I highly suggest looking at the slightly older Transformer TF101.

This is what I got.

Again, I got it with money from graduation gifts, and It still cost me a pretty penny.

But if you're just trying to branch out? I had an older version of this.

There are better options than that, I would explore them. If you're in the market for a new laptop or something, the MicroSoft Surface works pretty well as a travel computer and can be used as drawing tablet.

u/thecodingdude · 3 pointsr/Windows10

I still use this which has an atom processor and 32gb of storage, and it works absolutely fine on Windows 10 (although, I've never tried updating it). The main issue here is trying to use an SD card to update an entire OS, considering the size of Windows and depending on the class of SD card used will decide how long it takes.

u/BeerGogglesFTW · 3 pointsr/Android

I could use advice on a new 10" tablet.

At some point I'm going to need to replace my ASUS Transformer TF701T.

3 nagging issues are getting to me.

  1. The speakers blew and so I currently keep portable speakers on hand now, but it can be a pain.

  2. I've had it rooted for the last couple years with CM or Katkiss installed... But with the whole Netflix/Playstore thing, I decided to go back to stock... Stock is garbage. 4.4.2 with bloatware and terrible battery life. (I tried Magisk + Katkiss but I'll have to try again to get it working properly)

  3. I always hated that it uses a hard to find 36-pin (I think) connector and ASUS plug. Its overpriced and the knockoffs are terrible. I've tried a few and they're all disposable.

So I'm about ready to move on, but I'm trying to keep it cheap as possible without feeling like I'm downgrading. TF701T really did feel quite amazing running some roms.

    Right now I'm looking at:

Probably not the first gen as those are ancient and terrible.

The tab As are kinda low end and weak, with not a lot of ram or storage, but they're about what you can find for that price. I mean for a kid they're okay I guess but they might be a bit slow and stuff. Never used one but I do have experience with lower end tabs with similarish specs.

Probably this one?

u/woze · 3 pointsr/tablets

The regular iPad 2018 supports the Apple Pencil. That's about $400 to buy both iPad+pencil.

Perhaps the cheapest tablet with an active digitizer/stylus is the Samsung Tab A 10.1 with S Pen. (has to be "with S Pen" otherwise it won't have an active digitizer.) It's about $230 now on Amazon. The price of that thing fluctuates a lot:
https://camelcamelcamel.com/Samsung-Galaxy-SM-P580NZKAXAR-10-1-Inch-Tablet/product/B01LFV5SI6

An active digitizer/stylus make all the different in handwriting notes. The number of tablets that have one are fairly few and they do cost more.

The surface tablets are an option too. The Surface Go is relatively cheap (as surface tablets go) but buying the bigger model with pen will make it more expensive than the ipad 2018 alternative.

If you're not in a hurry, Black Friday is only a few weeks away too.

u/samfreez · 2 pointsr/technology

The iPad Air 2 is still a popular option, although it's less useful now than it was when first introduced, of course (app compatibility etc, as most developers are moving to wards the newer OS capabilities and hardware).

The Air 2 is available used through Amazon here for quite cheap, even up to the 64gb variant, which was still available brand new up until very recently, so there are still some in stock. The price is nowhere near the price of a used one, of course. That's the problem with Apple, IMO. Their hardware is "premium" priced simply because they have the ability to do so and still sell like hotcakes.

As far as storage space goes, that really also depends on the user. If they have a large movie or music collection they want to keep handy, then the larger storage capacities are a major blessing, as there's no SD card to add additional space as needed.

Before I forget, spread the love!

Should Reddit Raffle proclaim me the winner, I would love to have this mp3.

For the second part of the contest, Random Wishlist sent me to /u/onthejourney's WL, where I thought this set of funky fun colorful magnetic letters looked pretty neat. I would definitely suggest the ASUS Eee Pad Transformer - http://amzn.com/B004U78J1G

Amazon says it's Android 3.2 (Honeycomb) but once you get it, it should upgrade right to Ice Cream Sandwich (4.x)

This is not the new Transformer Prime (which is an even better tablet, but is about $600) -- for the heck of it, if you're interested it's here http://amzn.com/B0067PLM5E

u/ricefarmer912 · 2 pointsr/PickAnAndroidForMe

With $200, there isn't too much wriggle room in the tablet space besides the Nexus 7 - even then, it seems ASUS is announcing its successor soon.

ASUS also just recently announced this MeMo Pad HD 7. It's $130 USD but it has not been released yet and it says it's planning to hit "developing markets."

If you're okay with the tablet being a bit older, you can consider

u/humanmanguy · 2 pointsr/Android

Looks great, but as a professional drawing tablet I'd say it's poor compared to Microsoft's Surface Pro. While it is definitely heavier than the Note, the Pro is an ultrabook with a full installation of Windows 8.1--which means that it can run everything that a desktop Windows computer can, such as the full Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, Illustrator, etc) as well as mobile apps like Sketchbook Pro.

And the Surface Pro also has a wacom digitizer, plus the pen it comes with even includes a functional eraser.

If you compare the two, the Surface Pro (not Surface Pro 2) is even cheaper on Amazon:

Surface Pro

Galaxy Note Pro

They both make decent drawing tablets, but the Surface Pro is definitely a better option for anyone looking to do professional work.

  1. Surface Pro Tablet at just over $1,000. I used to have a $2,500+ telescope, but I bought it.
  2. I want it so I don't have to lug my giant 17" laptop to school or out when I do astrophotography. An iPad wont do since the astrophotography software runs on windows.
  3. Yes. I'm constantly flip flopping between getting a surface pro style windows table or an ultrabook.

u/Dantaro · 2 pointsr/tablets

OK, I know 500 is out of your price range, but please, PLEASE look into getting a used or refurbished Surface Pro 1. Beyond just the benefits of being able to run Win32 applications (traditional Windows apps), run them well (The SP1 has a core-i5), and has a Wacom digitizer + palm rejection.

Yes, the unit is pushing the upper parts of your price range. Yes, the battery life is pretty terrible (at 3-4 hours) and will require you to bring the charger.

But there are no Windows tablets with anywhere near the form factor and build quality of the Surface line, and if you can get one used you'll have far more processing power than any of the current cheaper wintabs.

Other good non-Surface WinTabs include the Dell Venue 8 Pro, and the VivoTab which you already mentioned.

u/CrystalCritz · 2 pointsr/FinalFantasy

Do you think that this Microsoft Surface Pro could play VIII on Steam fine with the different community mods? I'm trying to find a screen&controller setup, since I've really enjoyed that with the Switch. Having a really portable screen without a keyboard in between makes a difference.

Maybe get a GDP Win someday, but I'm thinking not right now.

u/reddit_user_19032014 · 2 pointsr/galaxynote4

Galaxy Note Pro 12.2" is probably the closest you can get to the Note phone. Not sure if they're coming out with a new version soon or not.

http://www.amazon.com/Samsung-Galaxy-Note-Wi-Fi-Black/dp/B00HWMPSK6

There's also the Note 10.1 as other users have suggested.

Not helpful for your situation, but I was also looking for a tablet similar to my Note that I could take notes with. Landed up getting a Microsoft Surface 3, and have absolutely loved it.

Ninja edit: the issue with the newer Samsung tablets, such a the galaxy tab you mentioned, is that they don't have an s pen. The Note Pro and the 10.1 do have an s pen. So see if that is important before making a decision.

Surface Pro 3... not exactly a standard tablet.

But the SP3 does runs full Windows, mine replaces both a tablet and laptop. Though I think it's since been discontinued with the introduction of the Surface Pro 4 and Surface Book. For a more reasonably priced (comparatively speaking) Windows tablet, the Surface 3 (non-Pro) is a popular option.

I also have a Dell Venue 8 Pro 3000 Windows 8.1 tablet, much smaller than a Surface device and much more cheaper but lacks the computing power. There are also many comparable tablets from HP and LG to name a few.

For Android tablets I have the 2013 Nexus 7 but the USB charging/data port broke on mine so I stopped using it (My Android smartphone and Windows tablets makes having an Android tablet redundant). The Nexus 7 and Nexus 9 tablets are fairly affordable and great bang for your buck but they lack MicroSD card slots as they're Nexus devices.

If all you're doing is reading I recommend one of the Amazon Fire tablets, they have various models though the resolution is a bit on the low side they're rather affordable with the cheapest model being damn near disposable as far as electronics go.

IDK enough to make an iOS recommendation but they're all of solid build quality from what I've seen.

Also OP if you're looking for 2nd hand devices check out https://swappa.com/buy/tablets

For less than the price as the cintiq, get a Surface Pro 3. They had wacom screens, I forget the company they changed to, but I have one and I use for drawing and digital painting. Couple weeks ago I finished my first fully digital drawing on it and found it to be completely capable of being an awesome, and portable, drawing tablet. I've also used a cintiq and found this to be a waaaay better alternative.

u/construktz · 2 pointsr/SuggestALaptop

Oh an active digitizer is incredibly valuable to those who will use it. The Lenovo ThinkPad Yoga has one and is a fantastic option, but it is quite expensive.

It also looks like the SP3 is cheaper on Amazon across the board if that helps. I'd go with the i5/8GB version, but if your work isn't going to be very intensive, the i3/4GB is still pretty reasonable. Hell, it looks like it's even cheaper than the Microsoft Store

u/PeterFnet · 2 pointsr/Surface

I also just started looking. Looking at the price history on Amazon, getting 100$ off seemed like a good target for me.

u/grevenilvec75 · 2 pointsr/windows

Look into the Surface 3 (the non-pro variety). Its 1920x1280 but you could probably change it (though since it's not a 16x9 aspect ration it might look a little weird).

Why does it have to be 1920x1080?

The problem with installing linux on a tablet is that you likely won't be able to find touchscreen drivers for it.

You can get the 2gb ram / 64gb storage version for ~$425 on amazon. (though i'd recommend going for the 4gb/128gb version)

u/RedDuckss · 2 pointsr/gamedev

I don't know if you'll be able to find a tablet at under $400 that can run Photoshop greatly. I spent almost on the dot $400 for my laptop, and the first tablet on Amazon that has similar specs to it is $700 (link). The ones I found for under $400 on Amazon only had 2GB of ram (link), which is the absolute lowest that Photoshop can run on, but I can't promise it will be usable (since Adobe recommends 8GB, which is what the previously linked $700 tablet has).

Is there a reason why you can't have a laptop but you can have a tablet? My suggestion would honestly be to talk to your boss about allowing a laptop instead. I honestly can't think of any valid reason to allow a tablet and not a laptop.

I haven't used ether of thoes but I use a Samsung Galaxy Tab-A it's $160 USD I think it's on sale now. However it is a bit dated now I got it about a year ago. I use it for manga and anime with vlc. And up to 256 gb SD card with 16 internal. It has a 10in 1900x1200 screen and a low price point this is the reason I got it.

I've been roaming through Amazon, and those are definitely the best tablets under $160. Both have amazing specs. 2GB RAM, 1080p screen, and both have Android M Asus one is bit more recent, while the Lenovo one is more cheaper.

You may want to research on which one has the better battery life and so on. Also, you can return your recently bought tablet to Amazon within 30 days, even if it is already opened.

No rush! Just let me know.

I do know that I have certainly seen mislabled tablets on Amazon before. For instance, I bought a Nuvision tablet a while back and Amazon said it had 1333mhz Ram, when it definitely had 1600mhz. Alternatively, is it possible that you're mixing it up with The Zenpad 8 (e.g. not "S 8")? That's 1.3ghz with 2gb of RAM, so it threw me off at first. Everyone on Reddit said the skip that Zenpad 8 and consider the S8. But my big question is still whether the S8 can handle newish games, or emulation.

EDIT: There's a refurbished Zenpad S8 on sale for $134.99 now, with Prime shipping. That might seal the deal...

u/thenameisbam · 2 pointsr/Nexus7

i got my mom a ZenPad 8 at christmas. mind you it came out in 2015 i think, but its pretty zippy for $130 and pretty close to stock android.

If you're buying a tablet for a young kid, i hate to sound like a shill, not an amazon employee or representative, but just buy this:
https://www.amazon.com/All-New-Amazon-Fire-7-Kids-Edition-Tablet/dp/B01J90MSDS/

It's amazon's kid friendly tablet, it runs android, but has a specialized launcher called 'FreeTime' for your kid's account, it has a locked down version of the amazon appstore that only has kids android apps/games without ads or in app purchases. It also has access to all the kids videos on amazon videos which are not perfect (Pengu has been teaching my daughter some bad habits) but miles ahead of youtube kids. Your /r/Elsagate worries will not be an issue on this one, the content is actually curated (Mostly consists of various kid's tv shows, think blue's clues and the like). You can also customize the content for age ranges to fit your child, it's supposed to be 3 and up, I've heard they have content for suggested ages up to 12 years. And, if for some reason, you wanted to install youtube or netflix or some other app outside their age range, you can grant them access to specific items. Almost forgot, a very generous library of kid's books is also included for free with freetime.

The freetime launcher is subscription based, but the tablet comes with a free year, and if you want to keep it after that, it's $3 a month. If you don't want to keep it, you can just convert it into a regular fire tablet without all the extra options.

The tablet also comes with a 2 year warranty that covers just about everything. My daughter dropped it in a tub, amazon advance shipped a new one as soon as I chatted them and we shipped the old one back. Your mileage may vary, but I did not even have to lie to them about it.

u/Ridry · 2 pointsr/MaliciousCompliance

My five year old has a https://www.amazon.com/All-New-Fire-Tablet-Display-Kid-Proof/dp/B01J90MSDS

But I don't use my phone when she's in the room unless a) we're on a particularly long trip together, I have no problem being on our devices separately on a flight for instance or b) we're watching a video together or she asked me a question I need to Google.

She specifically comments about why all the other grownups use their devices all the time. I am permanently glued to mine when she's not around, but I'll never let her see.

And she has screentime restrictions. If she wants her Kindle to read her a book instead of watching Bubble Guppies WTF do I care. It's her screentime. We treat it interchangeably.

You hit the nail though, it's not about how THEY use their screentime, it's about how we use ours. Stay off your devices when you're hanging out with your kids! They'll notice and they'll care.

And God willing they'll learn.

But I treat everything like that. She's tasted wine before when we are in a vineyard. And she likes to taste my coffee, lol. She knows that, like medicine, there's stuff in there that is an ok amount for adult bodies but would be too strong for children. But I don't make any of it seem forbidden. And she's never seen me have more than one drink either. I just try to aim middle of the road for everything and model good behavior. Everything in moderation!

I'm sure I'll fail somehow though!

The online tool should cover most of your needs and it's probably accessible through the Chromebook. That said, if you're on a budget, I've found this Samsung Tablet to fulfil all my needs and I got it on the cheap around Black Friday two years ago. That said, Black Friday sales are coming up, so if you shop around, you could probably also pick up an iPad which do have better build quality and overall UX as well as inking capabilites.

u/ritzmachine · 2 pointsr/MarvelUnlimited

I don't know what your budget is, but I just bought this tablet a couple weeks ago, and so far I absolutely love it. The build quality is great and the screen is perfect for comics.

Nexus 7 -> Pixel 7

I don't care if you have to keep the same bezels and form factor, just give me a good stock experience for a good price. Its completely ridiculous to not have a universal iPad Mini competitor. My current recommendation for a pen enabled semi-premium tablet at Nexus 7 prices is the 2016 Tab A, running OTA Nougat and Adhell.

u/lennox98 · 2 pointsr/gpdxd

The plus is definitely worth it, I'm not sure how more powerful it is than the original, but it has a slightly newer processor and better battery. If you get the plus I'd make sure to get the 2019 version that fixes a hinge issue the previous plus model had. It should handle emulation very well for psp, ps1 and all the older consoles. Game cube even has good performance on the gpd xd plus. I'd definitely go with the plus.

Here's one on Amazon for $235:
https://www.amazon.com/GPD-Foldable-Handheld-Touchscreen-Hexa-core/dp/B01N9IG6BL

Edit: you also might be able to find it cheaper on eBay if you look around.

u/Tigershawk · 2 pointsr/kindlefire

As far as Google apps go, it won't matter for long. I figure there is an 85% chance that the older HD8s will be at the same OS level within 6 months anyway. I don't know if the new OS will be flagged as banned by Google. This new OS does exist on the Fire TV, but I wasn't able to find anyone who said whether it affected anything.

My advice. DO NOT get an Amazon Fire tablet if Google is a primary criteria for you. It could go away at any point between Amazon and Google whims, so, get an authentic Android tablet to be sure. Something like this Lenovo as an example https://www.amazon.com/Lenovo-Android-Quad-Core-Processor-ZA2B0009US/dp/B07193VPNF?th=1

To sum it all up, If I wanted a 64GB version, and to be able to use internet outside of the house, and not insanely expensive, I would choose 64GB, Wifi + Verizon 3G, and buy it Used.

I would go with the 16gb Wifi only iPad 2 from Amazon. You save money on the tax and you get full warrantee from Apple still.

I've found that while it's tempting save money on used Apple stuff, they do kind of lose their sheen pretty quickly. While I know the iPad 1 is still totally functional, it's going on almost 2 years now. That's a long time in the tablet world. When the next couple iPads come out, that 1st gen is going to start looking like a relic.

Just my 2 cents. Good luck!

The real dilemma is iPad vs. Android. While I'm a fan of the e-ink Kindles, the Kindle Fire is just a dumbed down Android that's locked into Amazon. For $50 more you can get a real Android, natively running ICS, like the Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 which comes out next week.

I can heartily recommend my Galaxy Note 10.1, though there are probably much better options now to choose from. Microsoft's Surface for example also features pressure sensitive pens and would let you run Photoshop (if you bought a copy) or the GIMP.

Ah, light box & loupe is what I try to use my tablet as. It isn't quite there [I use this one for that purpose] yet so I get to see all kinds of artifacts, be subjected to low-res web-sized jpeg irritation and possibly suffer from the systemic color calibration problems. Maybe in the foreseeable future we'll probably have something that can re-create the light table&loupe&large format transparency experience. Somehow screen size and that it is a tablet rather than a monitor makes a qualitative difference.

u/Noughiphiet · 1 pointr/androidtablets
u/wookiepedia · 1 pointr/androidtablets

I am replacing a Nexus 10 that is becoming problematic and slow, requiring a factory reset every few weeks to keep it from becoming too slow to use. I already attempted to solve this cheaply myself with an RCA Maven Pro 12", and the screen is god awful and it's slower in its best state than the Nexus 10 is when it needs a factory reset. Other things about the Maven Pro make it attractive, but it's truly a piece of junk to be avoided.

So, my usage for this tablet will consist of:

  • Video consumption, 1080p 60fps. Youtube/Netflix/Plex/Twitch.tv
  • Chat in hangouts / twitch streams
  • Control of ssh terminal to remote systems
  • VNC control of remote systems
  • eBook reading
  • Reddit via sync for reddit
  • Web Browsing
  • SDR Applications for RF monitoring

Although the screen on the Maven Pro is awful, the size is just incredible. It allows for the device to truly act like a tiny laptop and the media consumption experience is far better than even the 10 inch screen it replaces. Normally, availability of recent versions of android is top of my list of requirements, but at larger screen sizes that tends to just not be possible. The options that I have not already tried in the 12"+ size category that I am aware of are:

  • Galaxy Note 12 Pro - Expensive, outdated version of android, but it has a very fast processor and the screen is reputed to be worth killing babies for. Very strong contender, especially since there is a very nice OEM keyboard option for it and it seems that there is some LineageOS support for this device as well.
  • Chuwi Hi12 - Cheap as hell, very very nice IPS screen, limited LineageOS support (which may be going away due to drivers no longer in mainline kernels). Keyboard from OEM is reported to be absolute garbage, so an alternative keyboard solution may be needed, but at this price, it wouldn't be too bad. Performance is reported to be mediocre at best, but it will be better than the RCA Maven Pro. If Lineage OS support continues, I would expect performance to increase. Also includes windows 10, which would be an interesting bonus, as well as the option to run ubuntu instead of windows or android. Another negative: touchscreen accuracy is awful when using any sort of screen protector (shitty digitizer).
  • Virgin Mobile TellyTablet - Perfect form factor to go along with media consumption use case. I can't seem to find one in the US, so I may have to get it shipped from the UK. ROM support may be spotty, so thats another negative, and portability will be iffy as well. Pretty much an unknown for me, as I've never seen one in person.

What other 12 inch or larger tablets are there that run android? I'm pretty flexible on most parameters, so long as the screen size is 12 inches or larger and doesn't have craptastic viewing angles like the Maven Pro. Hell, if I could pay to have a decent processor and IPS display put in the Maven Pro, I'd do it.

    Thanks in advance!

Those would be my considerations for that price range. They should all do what you want to fairly well. Obviously you'll have to weigh the options as far as screen size and internal storage goes. Almost all of these tablets also have different versions. The 32GB tablets I listed all have cheaper 16GB versions, and the 8" tablets all have 7" variants as well. I just included some different combinations for variety.

As a note of comparison, unless you get the 2nd generation iPad mini with the retina display, the screen is an 8" 1024x768, the lowest resolution amongst them. That's the main mark against it because while the specs of the mini are also paltry in comparison to those above (1GHz dual core, 512MB RAM), it's an Apple so it doesn't matter as much.

Dell 25 over
Great processor and good enough harddrive.

[HP at 254] (https://www.amazon.com/HP-11-AB011DX-11-6-Inch-Touchscreen-Convertible/dp/B01N0D8OG6/ref=sr_1_5?ie=UTF8&qid=1498603864&sr=8-5&keywords=2in1+laptop+tablet)
Cheaper but it isnt as powerful and has much less space.

Surface at 19 over
This is a great machine for note taking but you may need to get the pen after and a keyboard cover.

Your best option for a 2 in 1 for taking notes is definitely the Surface Pro 4, which is known to have the best touchscreen among windows laptops. It is pretty pricey though, and will be above your price range for a decent model that includes a keyboard and pen.

Maybe look into the HP Spectre X2 for $440, especially if you want to budget a bit. My mom has it and it has a very excellent touchscreen and would work very well for school. It's powerful enough for most multi-tasking and running school programs with a Core M processor, 4gb of ram and 128gb ssd. A pen does not come with it though, so you would have to buy that separately. Something like this (there are multiple though).

u/sunscreened · 1 pointr/Surface

Whoa. Thank you for your reply! Does Microsoft provide resellers with refurbished units?

Many, many, many outlets are selling the SU3-00001 as new. If you're correct, I hope they're making an honest mistake by using "new" to mean "we got this directly from Microsoft".

u/ajaxanon · 1 pointr/tablets

I think you might find it cumbersome navigating note taking on a tablet and then porting over the notes to a macbook. Alternatives worth considering:

  • get a printer: this one is very reliable, able to print wirelessly, and the ink drums last a long time.
  • get a chromebook
  • get a small laptop 1, 2, 3

  • Get a Surface Pro 4 and do everything on it instead of your mac.
u/The---Technician · 1 pointr/tablets

I would go for something like this Microsoft Surface Pro 4 which has a very good stylus and stylus support, decent battery life, good build quality and very important, it is a Windows based device which means, you can install any application you could install on a laptop or computer and it works, for example, Microsoft office- excel, word, powerpoint etc...You will also be able to open any of those files done on a computer..

u/nogaku · 1 pointr/visualnovels

You can play almost all VNs without trouble if the computer is Windows-based. The problems that arise saliently tend to involve software incompatibility issues (i.e. older games not updated/tested to run on Win10 machines) and rarely if ever have to do with the hardware of the computer. As long as your laptop has Windows as its OS (it seems to be so based on the specifications list) you can be assured that it will run the gamut of VNs without much trouble (graphics are never really an issue as VNs don't make much use of them to begin with--tho beware of VNs equivalent to triple-A type games like Muv-Luv Alternative cause of the frequent and rapid character movements it utilizes).

That said, not to be discouraging but why not consider shelling out a couple more bucks for a slightly higher-end model from a better known manufacturer (even with the specs like its storage type and ram size the display should be a huge devaluing factor)? I can tell you this as I had a tablet PC handed down to me by my brother that playing a VN on a unit with a screen no bigger than 12'' is actually pretty darn distracting because of how minuscule the font size becomes when the entire screen is literally the size of a paperback book--and reading a VN, I believe, is nothing like reading a book as audio quality as well as adequate amount of space for admiring pretty art work are major factors for enjoying a good VN.

My 'humble' recommendation

Search around a bit more for a better deal because you'll find a lot of alternative higher-end models with more faithful form factors that have gone down in price and--just my two cents--prioritize screen size and storage type/size because processors and memories installed in budget laptops are categorically indistinguishable performance-wise (although M series are of a different variety compared to i3, i5, i7 series).

u/Supahmarioworld · 1 pointr/consolehomebrew

Ok I just had this discussion with my friend at work, if you want the best emulation and homebrew your best option is something android based. Check out the Android handhelds on Amazon, specially the gpd xd plus but any cheap android device will probably emulate and do homebrew better than any portable Sony or Nintendo console.

https://www.amazon.com/GPD-Foldable-Handheld-Touchscreen-Hexa-core/dp/B01N9IG6BL

There's loads of portable Android based consoles coming out of China on Amazon that you can find YouTube reviews for

N64 and Playstation emulation has been flawless on android for years and there's dozens of emulators for each of the older consoles with any kind of feature you'd ever want. I think most of the Android handhelds are cheaper than new 3ds xls. I've been out of the emulation game for a while, not sure if there's good ps2 emulation yet, but ds emulation on Android has been great for a while also.

They can have wifi and Bluetooth support for wireless controllers and of course since it's android, you can download whatever phone app on the play store and use it to watch movies, YouTube, torrent files, IRC chat rooms, better browsers and everything. Sky's the limit on an android device.

Loads of android games on the play store also

It says it ships from and sold by Amazon. So, I think this is legitimately a new iPad Pro. Amazon has put their name as the seller, I know Amazon does have an agreement with Apple to be an official reseller. And if you have any issue you know how to get a hold of Amazon (such as damage due to shipping). Tech service for the item is still with Apple, so a manufacturing defect should it arise. Amazon would say in the title if it was refurbished or open box item (or you know where to find them to complain).

Uhm, I'd like to see which one you're talking about. Here is an ASUS tablet with 32 GB of storage AND free online storage for a year. An iPad with 32 GB of storage costs $100 more AND doesn't have a quad core CPU, which the ASUS does. One more thing, the ASUS tablet also has a bigger screen. Now maybe you'll believe that Apple is bullshit overpriced brand name. If you want me to do the same comparison for a macbook pro, I will. It's the same, I assure you. I get people all the time trying to tell me that Apple isn't overpriced. Yeah, okay.

u/jesusapproves · -13 pointsr/funny

You just haven't been looking.

These guys say the Galaxy has a better screen.

The iPad isn't bad it has just remained to high a price for too long. Every other device that has been on the market as long as the iPad has seen a decrease in price, the iPad has not moved much, if any.

Furthermore, the technology for handheld devices is progressing very rapidly, so the stuff that was great for the iPad 2 is starting to become quickly outdated.

Again, iPad isn't terrible - you could do much, much worse. But buying simply a brand and not the best product on the market is not my ideal situation.
