This is an awesome display of community and courage, no doubt about it, it's inspiring.

That said, I'm gonna hijack this top comment for a sec just to point out that this is a great example of why you wanna have some kind of glass break tool in your car at all times. I have one of these on every one of my key rings so it's always with me whenever I'm in a car. Doesn't have to be this one, but get yourself one. It's cheap insurance and you'll wish you had one in a situation like this (or worse if you go into a lake and that car starts filling up real quick)

Again, hate to hijack, this was an incredibly inspiring display.

Reminds me of this review:

>I was driving down the road when I hit a ditch and ran off the road. I screamed, "Jesus, take the wheel!" as I ditched out of my car. That bobble head did NOT take the wheel. Would not buy again.

Reminder that carrying one of these could save your life, or someone else's life. Small price to pay for something that can be terribly helpful. Not sure if it would have been useful here since he was sawing stuff away, but windows are going to provide a quicker escape than doors that are stuck if it's an option.

u/spammishinquisition · 24 pointsr/watchpeopledie

After a similar incident near my home, I bought resqme for my car. If nothing else, I was told to remove the head rest from the seat, insert the metal part at a corner of the window, and pull it down to break the window.

u/rollwave21 · 20 pointsr/NewOrleans

Make sure you have a set of these in your car!!

u/joelmercer · 17 pointsr/ofcoursethatsathing

This isn’t new. I have a little hammer that does same thing and you don’t need to try to frig with it in an emergency to get it stuck in the trim of your window to snap it.

Pro-tip: With a hello Kitty sun screen and those daiso 1.50$ window black screens on the rest of the windows not only was no one suspicious but I travelled to places I knew I shouldn't park in without a second thought. Baby on board sign will really seal the deal. All can be found at daiso or a dollar store.

I have one of these cable tied to the drivers side headrest pole. I’m usually the only person in the car but in theory anyone should be able to get to it

There are cheaper versions out there, but it's only a couple hundos in parts and will save you the $2k a replacement costs.

I made the chamber flags with these chamber flags and these key rings

u/jermwhl · 5 pointsr/IdiotsInCars

I get the be prepared mindset and 100% agree. Good on ya for that. But, something like this is much more practical. And mountable in a location that likely won’t become impossible to find in a situation you described, because anything that used to be under your seat probably isn’t anymore. Also less likely to become a projectile in a situation like you describe.

They do! Search wheel stands on Amazon and you'll find small metal stands meant to sit in front of a desk chair that have hard points for the pedals, wheel, and Shifter.

  • When I finally became of driving age, my grandfather (we kindly call him grandpappy) taught me how to check my fluids in my car, and tucked a tiny rag in my glove box, so when I checked my oil, I could wipe off the old oil on the stick, and get a proper read. He's the sweetest.

  • I'd like this steering wheel cover if I win!

  • I'm saving it for later.
u/throwawayvan85 · 3 pointsr/vandwellers

I wouldn't use a propane heater, I had more space than you in a RAV4 and didn't do it because it's such a fire hazard in a car. You need at least 3 feet of space between you, your belongings, parts of the car, and the heater so it doesn't melt or catch things on fire. Also in an uninsulated environment with lots of windows like a car the heat dissipates quickly, leaving you with all the moisture it puts out and not very warm unless you're sitting right in front of it.

I would suggest slapping some universal seat heaters on your mattress/sleeping pad, they are really easy to wire into your car using a simple fuse tap and have an on/off switch. You can switch them on to toast up your bed while you drive to your sleeping location and then it will be super nice and warm when you climb in, plus no extra moisture getting things cold, clammy, and creating condensation. You only have to be careful not to leave them on so they don't wear down your battery.

Like I said in the post it should fit better on '95 and older. It looks like the bottom seat cushion changed in '96 so it wasn't a perfect fit but I made it work.

I also needed to pick up some hog rings and pliers:

CatClamp Standard Kit https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00HPZTCMA/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_LvaSCbSKY56NG there’s a beefier version for twice the price. I didn’t opt for that since i felt it was unnecessary. Just make it as tight as possible because there was a rattle after I first installed it and after tightening it it was significantly less audible.

Some people shrouded the cable that wraps around the car in hose to remove the rattle but I didn’t want to bother with it.

You can buy pleather replacement seat covers on amazon for $100. It looks fairly DIY and the pictures from reviewers actually look really good. Probably won't be the greatest quality and durability, but for $100 it's hard to argue.

Going to order them for myself. Here's the link.

OP, are you in Albany Park/Andersonville/Ravenswood/Lincoln Square are? This shit is happening a lot up here. I would seriously consider getting a CatClamp after the you get it replaced and have some extra scratch. It won't stop them or anyone who's very determined, but it's enough for them to simply move to a different car after one look at it. If you park in the same area, these guys might come back, spot your car, and do it again. It happens.

I bought the following for my new '18 EX (bought last week for 28,800 OTD).

Accessories:

Yes:

  1. Cargo liner - https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B072K625NB/
    Fit perfectly. Recommended.

  2. Cup and door liners - https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B078MMWDGW/ Comes in a cheap looking plastic bag, but I'll be darned if everything didn't fit.

    No:

  3. Edge guard - https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01BWKCUAO/
Didn't work. The reinforced door edges makes it wider than what the edge guard can fit, so it can't grip properly. :P

  4. Center Arm Rest cover - https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B074L2NL9K/
Not a good fit, and the elastic is annoying. Definitely needs a "lip" that covers the edges in the front and the back. It doesn't move around and was cheap, but I wouldn't buy it again.

  5. Glass Screen Protector - https://www.amazon.com/CRV-Trapezoid-Tempered-Protector-Navigation/dp/B07454QWD5/
Basically the same as an iPhone screen protector. Applies the same way, and it fit fine as long as you're careful about bubbles. Edit: Moved to NO! Cracked and bubbled like crazy when the temps went up to 90. Don't buy unless your weather never gets hot.

    WishList:

  6. Floormats that don't cost hundreds of dollars.

  7. Same for leatherette/neoprene custom fit seat covers.

  8. Door armrest covers since I tend to rest my arms on them a lot. Having fabric there means it'll wear out eventually.

  9. Louder auto-lock sounds

  10. Different lock sound for manual locking instead of auto-lock from walking away.

  11. Dials for Tach and Speedometers. I miss those.

  12. Separate vent option buttons for climate control. Having to navigate away from music to access ac/heat controls are far more annoying than I had thought.

  13. Why the heck is the CarPlay USB port so far away in the center console? It should be next to the first 12v port. It should also allow connection via Bluetooth since current CarPlay requires a Lightning cable <insert wtf Jackie Chan meme here>. Why is a wire required these days. Honda should just put in a wifi router so it can communicate with smartphones and provide ODB2 connectivity options.

  14. If the car's in Park, Car Play should allow AirPlay duplication from phone to the center screen like an Apple TV. Watching a movie or Youtube while parked should be an option.

  15. Stop auto-playing music when engine/USB cable connects. Arrgh! Who the heck thought that was a good idea? Users want optional switch/setting that should let us turn off autoplay music for those times that we want quiet.
u/majikmike · 2 pointsr/granturismo

I highly recommend this:Next Level Racing wheel stand.

It's incredible stable, no center bar, full adjustable, and 100x better than my custom TV stand that I outfitted with metal plates for added stability and worked well with my G25 for about 7 years - I would place about 20lbs of free weights on top to stop the wobble. Now that I updated to a FANATEC I needed something better. I was skeptical at first but after 6 months of continued use I wouldnt go any other way.

I have no idea if this would work, but a spring loaded emergency glass window punch comes to mind in case a dog "latches" on and you need to give its nose a good sting. I did read that you can "test" these on a thick padded object such as a magazine, so it sounds like they will engage on a softer surface rather than only glass. In any case, I think you wouldn't be accused of carrying a weapon for one of these?

It's almost impossible to open a flooding car door because of the water pressure, and it's unbelievability difficult to break a car window inside by hand without a specialized tool.

I'm certain the scared woman tried both of those things before deciding to call 911.

Edit: This comment is so naive I'm gonna leave this link to a car window breaking tool you should get incase this happens to you.

Not wired in yet. There's a few ways you can DIY it however. You can go to a junkyard and try to find some ZJ or XJ seats that have seat heaters in them (the XJ came with heated seats in the limited edition on 97-01 models), you can purchase a DIY kit from Amazon (you can also take your seats to an upholster and have them install it for you) or you can purchase new seats with heaters built-in from PRP or Corbeau.

Depending on the style you get, you may need a switch that has an ON/OFF/ON setup for low/high seat heating.

u/AstarteHilzarie · 1 pointr/beyondthebump

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01E3Z5R00/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_78.szb71FHQHB check these out. They're like a sock so they fit over the door frame. Blocks a lot of light but you can still see through them to drive, and you can roll the windows down for a little breeze if you want.

u/mrkondumb · 1 pointr/KiaSoulClub

u/Kromulent · 1 pointr/knives

For regular cars, the Res-Q-Me is pretty much ideal. Zip tie one to the emergency brake handle and you can find it upside down in the dark.

If you have to get through laminated glass in a hurry you want a no-nonsense tool for that. The glass first needs to break, and then it either needs to be pulled or pushed out of the way, or sawed through.

Side windows can usually be broken, and then pushed out with an elbow or foot. They are not attached on all four sides like a windshield. Windshields can be broken and kicked out, but that can be hard to do with you hands. The saw is used because rescuers don't want to kick it in towards the passengers.

My first choice would be a small rock hammer.

https://www.amazon.com/Estwing-Rock-Pick-Geological-Reduction/dp/B01EKZFJVK/ref=sr_1_10?s=power-hand-tools&ie=UTF8&qid=1542978396&sr=1-10&keywords=rock+hammer

Find a good way to secure it so it won't bounce around in the cab if you wreck and roll it. Velcro straps might be good. Once you get that hammer in your hands the side windows are toast, and you have a good fighting chance with the windshield too.

u/NZOR · 1 pointr/mazda3

We put up a canopy and set up some tables, here's a pic from last year. We've condensed things down a lot since then, we only travel with one tote and one cooler now. In the picture you can see one of these which is nice as an option to sleep with the hatch open on hot nights. For a little extra ventilation we also got these and roll down the back windows.

u/Tomathew · 1 pointr/fordranger

Nice, I've seen those ones in there actually! I wasn't sure how they would hold; I'm always skeptical of seat covers that don't slide over the whole seat. I might give them a try, got a small rip in drivers side seat.

Backup plan is to get a new set of 60/40s from the scrap yard, put some aftermarket seat heaters in, and call it all new!

the reviews say otherwise.

I was driving down the road when I hit a ditch and ran off the road. I screamed, "Jesus, take the wheel!" as I ditched out of my car. That bobble head did NOT take the wheel. Would not buy again.

First Id say swap your current key organizer for this. Secondly id say remove the red paracord and the long chain. Or if you need the red paracord to hold the key organizer, replace the red paracord with the chain

Not sure why you're the thread's only skeptic. The second dude has something in his hand hes covering by pulling his sweater down. When he goes to the glass you can see him whack it. Looks like he has one of these.

There are Catalytic converter clamps but they're pretty expensive. Best course of action is probably to complain to WETA that they need CCTV cameras there.

Did you know Amazon will donate a portion of every purchase if you shop by going to smile.amazon.com instead? Over $50,000,000 has been raised for charity - all you need to do is change the URL!

Amazon, it's the same one I got for my gf for her birthday a couple years ago

Edit: here's the one I found on Amazon it's not the exact same but they have options to change to different prints.

To edge the acrylic I've found an older reddit post where a person used this, https://www.amazon.com/MATCC-Guards-Rubber-Protector-Protection/dp/B01BWKCUAO

And I was just looking at this - https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00NL4BXKI/?coliid=I2QO1SS9W21AHK&colid=15JWKRV204R90&ref_=lv_ov_lig_dp_it&th=1

I don't know anything about edging/trimming...

After hitting two deer (while riding my motorcycle), my mother bought me these:

No hits since. Superstition?

Get a deer whistler. Of the deers I've seen since putting one on my car they either stop dead in their tracks alongside the road or are running as far away from the road as possible

u/laughingrrrl · 1 pointr/Random_Acts_Of_Amazon

Also a safety/car escape tool

Think that's enough from me? lulz

Can auto makers just install those black plastic deer whistle things? If they work on deer, they have to work on people too right?? https://www.amazon.com/Bell-Automotive-22-1-01000-8-Black-Warning/dp/B000CC4O58/ref=pd_lpo_263_bs_lp_img_2?ie=UTF8&psc=1&refRID=8AP09ZSWQSW7NVRX0MQ9

I use this Next Level Racing stand with a logitech g29 wheel. It is the most compact setup by far because you can use your own chair. I collapse my whole setup and keep it in a normal sized closet between use.

u/Tangent_ · 1 pointr/BoltEV

It's more complicated than that though otherwise the list of IIHS top safety picks would have at least one EV on it... To be fair though the Bolt didn't make the list for it's headlights, not a category I think I'd include on a list of what I think most people consider "defensive" safety.

And you're totally right, for either gas or EV cars to light up takes a serious collision with the exception of almost freak events for either type of car. The increased danger with EVs is the lack of needing an ignition source, and the difficulty in extinguishing a fire. Any standard ABC fire extinguisher will be effective on a gas fire provided it hasn't gotten too big or you're trying to use one of those teeny extinguishers. An EV battery fire is considerably more complicated...

And just to reiterate, I'm in no way saying EV fire dangers are something to actually worry about; I was just disagreeing with the premise that they're safer. In the real world we should all be more concerned with a run of the mill non-fiery car accident, choking, or slipping and falling in the shower. That is to say all I'd recommend is to mount an extinguisher in your car (no matter what kind of car) and move on with your day.

I was about to buy the IL console, then I found an old post from this forum recommending this instead. It costs $8.

Arrived last week, and I've been using it ever since. Works great, looks pretty good, and I like the $292 discount.

u/RagnarRocks · 1 pointr/TeslaModel3

I bought this one on amazon for about $80: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07QNJR94V It was an improvement, but it does trap a bit of heat.

I figured stopping infrared from getting in would be more optimal since there's a lot of glass in the Model 3, so I had Llumar Air80 installed on the windows, roof, back & windshield. While pricey it was a significant improvement over the sun shade because it cut down heat from the windows and the windshield as well as allows better visibility out the back glass. I still feel a bit of heat from the roof when I turn my head but it's hardly noticeable compared to the inferno with no tint or sun shade.

I haven't been compelled to re-install the sun shade now that I have tint, but it would probably improve comfort even more.

I use an expandable cargo-crate paired with a pet barrier.

The cargo-crate allows me to store loose items, or things that might otherwise tumble and roll around in the car in. (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01ECMRFTA/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1)

The pet barrier allows me to attach small things as well as stack items higher up without worrying that it'll spill into the rear passenger area. (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0040Q8ZM0/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1)

I have a rear cargo-net as well, but I find that I rarely use it over the cargo-crate. (https://www.hondapartworld.com/cr-v-accessories/cr-v-interior/623_08L96-SWA-100)

Oh goodness no, I can't take credit there. I don't want to downplay the effort, it definitely takes care and patience, but the covers themselves are premade.

Here's a link to them if you're interested (again my review is that they're imperfect and not super great quality, but they do the job and are relatively inexpensive)

My steering wheel would be freezing everytime i went to drive so I bought this steering wheel cover and it made a big difference.
