Congrats! Although, for the record, "come back after you lose some weight" isn't very common advice in MFA.

As far as starting from scratch, the Basic Wardrobe guide in the sidebar is a great start, but you'll want to think about what works best in your climate, for your age, and for your job/school. It's a inoffensive baseline to help you be well-dressed while you learn and develop your own style. The incredibly abbreviated version is straight/slim-leg jeans in a dark, nondristressed wash, vneck tshirts, Oxford cloth button-up shirts with button-down collar points (aka ocbds), simple canvas sneakers in neutral colors like white or gray, and brown leather shoes or boots in classic styles.

Edit: More details for a basic wardrobe on a budget. I'm going to focus on things you can try on in person, since I think that's critical when you're starting from scratch.

  • For jeans, Levi's 501/514/508/511, which should be available at every anchor store at every mall in America. JCPenney has newly-renovated Levi's sections in all of their stores, so that might be a good place to start. The numbers refer to different cuts (normal vs. slim legs, straight vs. tapered, etc), so I advise trying all of them on, and in a couple different waist sizes. If you're unsure about which fits you best, post a thread on MFA with some fitting room pics. We'll help you out.

  • Mossimo v-neck tshirts at Target are usually $8-10 and fit most people really well. Almost everything they have is a versatile color, but for wearing with dark jeans, I'd avoid navy and black because they don't create enough visual distinction. For a quick fit check, make sure the shoulder seams of the shirt line up with the bony protusions at the edge of your shoulders. Too many people wear shirts with shoulder seams drooping halfway to their biceps, which looks sloppy.

  • Target's Merona ocbds are also a decent choice, although this is a common enough shirt that they're going to have something very similar at JCPenney, Macys, H&M, or any store that carries a large line of men's clothing. Look for solid white or light blue. You can use basically the same quick fit check for ocbds that you do for t-shirts.

  • A lot of mall stores will carry Vans Authentics, which are a classic canvas plimsoll. Some of the stores are going to be obviously targeting a teenage demographic, but you can just ignore everything but the shoes you're looking for. Look for white, off-white, or light grey. Avoid black. There's a misconception that black sneakers go with everything, but it's my mission to disabuse people of that idea. Black is a stark, somber color that's incongruent with the casualness of sneakers. Black's also not a neutral, and as I mentioned in the bullet about t-shirts, it doesn't go well with dark blue denim.

  • For casual leather shoes, Sperry Top-sider boat shoes are a really popular option, but they're more of a spring/summer shoe in my opinion, so we're getting to the point where they won't be in season. Some versatile options that are more appropriate for Fall are desert boots, tan bucks, and blucher mocs. Unfortunately, these may be harder to find in local stores. Again, shades of brown are what you want.

You can pick up all of this stuff for $300-400, which isn't a bad investment for looking good.

2nd Edit: I just saw in another comment that you wear size 15 shoes, so mall stores may not work out for you after all. I put this guide to large-sized footwear together a few weeks ago, and you can see that most of the shoes I recommended above are available online in your size.

Leather is essentially dead skin. Like skin, it needs to be kept somewhat moist to prevent becoming brittle and cracking, but unlike living skin, it no longer receives nourishment, hence the whole point of doing this.

Keep in mind, "Less is more". Always aim for enough to cover the leather, but not enough to saturate it. Your boots will darken slightly, just like anything that acquires moisture.

If you don't follow any routine? Boots may last you a few years, maybe more, maybe less.
If you do follow a routine. Boots may last a few decades, maybe more, maybe less. They may outlast you!

  1. wipe them down with a damp rag to get off any surface dirt.

  2. if there are salt stains, get a cup of water and mix in some white vinegar. Repeat #1

  3. let them dry thoroughly. overnight is preferable

  4. go on amazon and get Bick 4 and a Horse hair brush

  5. follow directions on Bick 4.

  6. Repeat #5 (probably several times)

7 Reevaluate at this point. If it's still not up to par, post on r/goodyearwelt and r/RedWingShoes for further advice.

I use these Nippies - they're adhesive and reusable. I have several summer dresses that are incompatible with bras, so that's when I use them most - I've had my pair since 2014. They conceal both color and headlights.

Looks like they have them on Amazon and... Mother of god... I need one of these.

Oh man, I love when people ask stuff like this on Reddit. I bootblack, and have worked on countless leather boots! Frye boots are lovely.

First off, what kind finish do your Melissa Buttons have, or did they have when you got them? For instance, looking at the current line, Antiqued/Polished can take polish, Rugged should not be polished, and Suede will have an entirely different cleaning/care routine from the other two. I'll assume it's closer to the first two for the following.

For any leather that's not suede or nubuck, the first step is cleaning. You can pick up some saddle soap (Kiwi exists in your local drug store or grocery store and is totally fine) or use just about any mild soap - I regularly use diluted Dr. Bronners. You want to create a lather and scrub that into the leather, and then wipe the boot down with a damp, not wet, rag. Be sure to get all the suds off the boot, but don't soak it either. If it's really dirty, feel free to repeat this step!

Then, I would choose a conditioner. I'd actually stay away from an animal-based oil like neatsfoot oil or mink oil, as well as less-stable oils like olive oil, since those could go rancid with too much humidity. I'm a big fan of Obenauf's, which gives good deep conditioning with just a bit of product (seriously, a little goes a long way) and has a pretty neutral scent. Frye actually sells a conditioning cream of their own, which I imagine would also be fine. Pretty much anything with a beeswax base is also good. Apply with your fingers so you can really rub it into the leather - the heat from your hands will help work it in.

Finally, if your boot is the sort that would look better with some shine, I would wait a day or two to let the conditioner soak in and then apply a bit of cream polish - this will give your boots some shine, but it won't be like, patent-leather mirror shiny, which I feel would be the wrong style for Frye boots. Kiwi also sells these, but Meltonian is my go-to. With cream polish, you apply a light coat and then buff the boot with a shoe brush in light, fast strokes. You can use your fingers to apply the polish, but it'll dye your fingertips, so either wear gloves or use a rag or a polish brush. Buff the boot until it's shiny to your liking!

Don't worry too much, it's pretty hard to ruin a good pair of boots while taking care of them. They'll definitely be happier with a bit of TLC!

u/Charwinger21 · 37 pointsr/malefashionadvice

A good computer bag.

Not even joking. It's the one thing I always have with me when on campus.

After that, this is going to sound cliche, but take a look at the MFA uniform and draw inspiration from there. Some Clarks Desert Boots, a good fitting pair of dark wash jeans, and an Oxford cloth button down look great together, and are a great place to start. You'll probably want to look more towards fall/winter styles than spring/summer styles though (unless you live somewhere that is hot in the winter).

Unfortunately it is hard to give specific advice without knowing where you're starting at, but remember that fit is king. There is nothing more important in the world of fashion than making sure that your clothing fits properly, and definitely check out the sidebar (over on the right).

edit: Oh, and if you're in a business program, make sure you have business casual or a suit ready (if not both). You'll need them for presentations and events.

Hey, I'm somebody who goes braless on occasion and has very pointy nips. Have you considered something like these?

They tend to stay put pretty well, and honestly, if you're comfortable without a bra at your size there's not really any reason to wear one, especially since your size would be very hard to find. That's just my opinion. :)

If you really want a bra, though, of course you should look for them.

u/Siegfried_Fuerst · 26 pointsr/malefashionadvice

No shoe lasts forever, but here is how you can help yours try

  • Avoidance: Try not to wear your shoes in the rain, wet leather soles wear several times as quickly as dry ones and are more susceptible to tears or other serious damage. Treat your shoes like you would your foot, don't kick anything or drop anything on them.

  • Rotation: Wear your nice leather shoes only every second or preferably third day, this gives the leather time to dry, which will reduce wear and tear. Cost $0 Last: 10-15 years From: You

  • Shoe Trees: Pulls moisture out of your shoes after they're worn. Maintains shape and keeps them smelling nice. Cost: $24.95 Lasts: 10-15 years From: Woodlore/Allen Edmonds, Jos A Bank on sale, Nordstrom

  • Shoe Horn: goes behind your heel as you put your shoes on, keeps your heel from folding over the leather in the back and degrading it over time. Cost $2.50 Lasts: Lifetime From: Amazon

  • Toe and heel: they're little metal plates that are nailed into the sole to keep that area from wearing. Doubles the life of the sole. Cost ~$20 Lasts: 1-2 years From: Local cobbler or shoe repairman.

  • Topy: Thin rubber top coat over the toe of the shoe, lowers the wear of the leather. Cost ~$30 Lasts: 1-2 years From: Local cobbler or Shoe Repairman.

  • Leathr conditioner: Every two weeks to two months depending on wear. Keeps the leather soft and happy. Cost $4.95 + Shipping Lasts: at least a year. From: Allen Edmonds

  • Horsehair Brush: Keeps dirt, dust and salt off your shoes, brushing down when you get home will keep your shoes clean and happy. Cost: $6.99 Lasts: 5-6 years From: Kiwi

  • Creme Polish: Helps moisturize leather, maintain colour and keep them shiny. Cost: $9.00 Lasts: At least a year From: Allen Edmonds

  • Edge Dressing: Applied once every couple of months to the edge of the sole and heel, it will keep your shoes looking neat and sharp. Cost: $4-5 Lasts: 3-5 years From: Fiebings, Allen Edmonds.

If you take care of your shoes and treat them well, they can last up to 15 years and still look beautiful.

Hey nice looking watch man! All I know is that it uses a Japanese Miyota quartz movement, a common quartz movement in today's watches. Nixon is mostly associated with skaters. surfers, snowboarders, and other street sports of similar kind. As others have said though, they do not get much love around /r/Watches because they are considered a fashion brand. My first watch was a Nixon Timeteller years ago. It was good, then I lost it. Then I found it again recently.

Watch collecting can be as expensive or as cheap as you want it to be. If you lurk around this sub for a while you'll see lots of different styles in all different price ranges. I love watches, but at the point in my life that I'm at right now (that being a broke college kid), I promised myself to stay in the sub $200 range for the time being. Costco had Seiko solar chronograph watches in stainless steel for $50 several years ago. I bought 20. Still have the same one on my wrist. Never take it off. No problems. I've given away like 8 of them as gifts, but that was a deal of a lifetime.

Edit: this was the watch. Just an awesome watch . . . for $50. I should have bought 100.

Nippies are my favorite, and are reusable https://www.amazon.com/dp/B001PU9A9Q

u/Iamamomwithsnacks · 21 pointsr/femalefashionadvice

Sometimes I like the silicone nipple pasties(pros: reusable, comfortable, smooth, skin like. cons: expensive, sometimes thick and visible): one, the petals tend to blend better

But then other times I want something simpler, so I go for the paper-y, one use ones. You can find these with all adhesive and with no adhesive in the middle if your nips are sensitive. one two

I only go braless in really loose tops, or really snug ones that help shape my boobs a little. Or in clothing where a bra would show(fancy dresses, hellooo).

As far as nipples in our culture, I don't really want to see your whole entire boob hanging out of your shirt in public, but I won't die if I do see it. I don't take a stance, really, on the whole "men can walk around shirtless but women can't and that's wrong" debate.

Wear your shirt, don't wear your shirt, wear a bra, don't wear a bra--unless you're trying to be sexual to my toddler, it doesn't bother me.

u/triedtosay · 21 pointsr/weddingplanning

It looks like you don't need a whole lot of support, just nipple coverage? If so, and if the cups are sewn on top of the lining, you could carefully remove them yourself and just use stick on covers like these.

At minimum, I would suggest four things: Horsehair brush (as mentioned below), a conditioner, a dauber (to apply the shining agent), and a shining agent (if you want them to shine/polish).

My recommendations on products that I've personally used (which I've used a number of things, but found these to be had at a good price/quality ratio):

  1. Kiwi Horsehair brush. I have two of these, one for work and one for home. Love them both.

  2. Lexol leather conditioner. Amazing stuff, I use it on belts, wallets, car seats, and definitely boots and shoes. I bought a liter, but I'm guessing the 8oz bottle will last several years. Strong recommendation for this product.

  3. FootFitter dauber. I didn't use a dauber for a long time but in my opinion, it's much easier to get a consistent coating with a dauber vs an old shirt. Definitely optional on this one.

  4. Saphir neutral wax. Saphir is a company highly touted on /r/GoodyearWelt and many other shoe forums/communities. I have never come across a straight out bad review of anything they make, but have only used their waxes. Much bigger fan of their wax over Kiwi and other generic waxes. It smells great, shines great, and is quite forgiving. I suggest Neutral for all colors except black, in which case I recommend black. Strong recommendation.
u/AlGoreVidalSassoon · 14 pointsr/malefashionadvice

I feel like an asshole recommending these because it's become such an MFA cliche but Clark's Desert Boots are a pretty good transition from sneakers to shoes. They're casual but can be slightly dressed up when need be. I don't find them anywhere near as comfortable as sneakers but you could put some insoles in them. From how you described your wardrobe though any kind of dress/work boot (Red Wings Heritage, Wolverine 1000 mile, LL Bean Khatadin, Chippewas, Alden Indys) would go with what you normally wear. Those are just more pricey than Desert Boots. If you haven't already, check out the boot guide on the sidebar.

u/velvedire · 14 pointsr/TheGirlSurvivalGuide

Nippies!

They're expensive up front but last forever. Just wash them as necessary.

u/chadnik · 14 pointsr/femalefashionadvice

Just depends on your preference. Personally, I heartily support freeboobing. If you want a bra but don't want your straps to show, you can wear a strapless or bandeau bra. If you don't need support but don't want your nipples to show, use pasties like Nippies.

For business casual Friday, a Casio Edifice EF-503D.

A frugal /r/watches favorite. Purchased on Amazon (US) with a "premium" black NATO strap from Crown & Buckle.

u/DevilishRogue · 12 pointsr/Watches

The Casio MDV106-1AV is a perfect daily use watch and does look like the Rolex Submariner but is a great watch in it's own right. It is quartz rather than automatic but considered by many to be best available budget dive watch. You can purchase the bracelet for it for less than $30.

If you must have an automatic rather than a quartz then the Orient Ray II is a great option that is also similar to the Submariner in terms of design but again a quality time piece in and of itself.

And if you aren't bothered about having the Rolex style looks, the Seiko SNZH55 is designed along the lines of the Blancpain Fifty Fathoms and also an excellent timepiece.

u/HeywoodJablowme · 12 pointsr/Watches

You may be interested in a Hamilton Khaki Field Automatic which can be had on Amazon for less than $400. It uses a Swiss ETA movement similar to the Stowa. In some ways, it meets in the middle between Stowa and Seiko in terms of price and quality.

Generally, for more expensive pieces, you're paying for the finishing and quality of the components, as well as the horological significance of the brand. Whether or not these things are worth it to you will depend on how much you value that sort of thing, and how much disposable income you have. I'm a student and I love my SNK809 and SKX013. I would be thrilled to own a $5000 watch, but at this point in my life, there are better things for me to spend my money on than a high-end Swiss timepiece. Perhaps when I reach a career milestone a few years down the road, I may decide to pull the trigger on a Rolex or Omega, but until then, I'll wholeheartedly enjoy my Seikos.

u/informareWORK · 10 pointsr/goodyearwelt

First, get a pair of cedar shoe trees to keep in the boot (you don't have to insert it all the way if you don't want)
Next, buy a horse hair shoe brush. After you wear your shoes, brush them down. If there is some stubborn dirt/grime, you can wipe them down with a damp rag, let them dry, then brush them.
Every few months, depending on how often you wear them, give them a good cleaning with Lexol cleaner, then condition them with Lexol conditioner. Let the conditioner dry, then brush vigorously.
That is literally all you need to do. No Obenaufs, no oils, nothing fancy.

Is this going to be a dressy watch for formal/special occasions? Or are you looking for a daily wear watch?

If the former latter, then perhaps a hard-wearing quartz is a good idea. If you want something special, but that you'll have to take care of, then your budget could easily allow you a dressier mechanical watch (auto or hand wound).

In fact, fuck it, here's a list of shit I dug up. I love internet-window-shopping:

Young-looking Seiko automatic diver

Hamilton Khaki

Another (larger) Hamilton Khaki

Khaki Pilot (very diver/aviator-esque look)

A Tissot auto chrono

A fairly dressy Hamilton

A nice and clean sporty Tissot

A rather large but eye-catching Hamilton

Yes, I know I went kinda overboard on the Hamiltons, but I was working off the impression your watch example and fondness for divers gave me.

EDIT: got my former/latter mixed up. I blame Mr. Walker's magnificent amber restorative.

Seiko Chronograph SSB031 and variants

Price: $139.00 for SSB031

LINK:Amazon

Movement: Seiko 6T63 Meca-Quartz (more on this below)

Style: Chronograph

Size: 40mm
Link: 6T63 Database

Description: This line of watches has been out now for a few years but can still be had on the internet, or eBay. I believe some sale links are found on the database as well, though some models can be hard to find. A cheap Speedmaster alternative that isn't a direct homage. The Seiko Meca-Quartz is being used recently in a lot of microbrand chronographs, and sold at a much higher cost than the SSB lineup. The 6T63 movement (also known as VK series when used in a non-Seiko branded watch) features an automatic like chronograph movement. The watch itself has a non signed, non screw-down crown, and raised pushers at 2 and 5 o'clock. These pushers have significant tactile feedback that is hefty and nice for a watch at this price range. The chronograph hand also immediately snaps back upon reset, rather than rotating the remainder of the distance. Battery life is expected 3 years.

So what is meca-quartz? Link to a quick guide
What this means is the watch will be a quartz watch, however the chronograph hand will sweep at 1/5 seconds intervals, rather than tick. This means you get an automatic like sweep, with quartz accuracy for a way lower cost than an automatic chronograph, and you don't having to worry about keeping your watch wound. This particular line of watches has a wide variety of dials with different combinations to choose from. The cheap feeling metal band can be a downside, but that can easily be swapped out for something nicer. Overall, you get the best of both worlds, quartz and automatic for a very nice price. Refer to the database linked above to see the different combination of faces and model numbers that make use of the 6T63 movement and where they can be obtained.

That's a great find! The lack of heel might be odd if you aren't use to it, so watch for arch pain. As for the shoes, check the heel stitching and make sure it isn't loose, and that the sole is in good condition without uneven wear. A cobbler can easily fix those things. Also, check that the tongue and vamp seam isn't stretched or torn. Also, switch out the laces a thiner braid, waxed ones if you can - something slick to match the shoe.

As for care, definitely check out the "Put This On" episode that Thamonsoon recommended. Your initial clean will be cleaning the dust off with a damp cloth, get in the seams - try a toothbrush. Then wait for them to dry and give a good brushing. For continual maintenance, I'll copy my shoe care suggestions I made from another post here:

"I made another post about boat shoe care, so in that style I'll give you the basics of caring for your new shoes.

You will need a soft cloth, any jersey cotton will work, or you can buy a shoe rag, a stiff brush, cedar shoe trees and some shoe polish. This will cost you about $30 USD and last a while.

  • After a day of wear: Brush any mud or debris off of them, don't forget the soles, and give them a quick wipe with a damp cloth. Put in the shoe trees so that they fit snugly, but not too tight.

  • Every 1 to 2 weeks, depending on usage: Polish your shoes. To do this, start by removing the laces and cleaning the shoe of any dust or debris, if you use a damp cloth, wait for the shoes to dry before continuing. Then, take your polish brush, collect some polish from the tin on the bristles and brush your shoes until you can see a thin layer of polish on them. Once you've covered all the sides and seams, let them stand for 15 minutes or so for the polish to set.
After they've set, buff you shoes vigorously with your polish brush until they have a lustre and you can no longer see the matte texture of polish. If you wish to "shine" your shoes, give them that reflective lustre, take your polish rag and give you shoes a once over with polish. Just enough so you can see you've covered the shoe. Then add a few drops of water to an area of the shoe an buff with the polish cloth to a mirror shine. Continue until the all the polish is buffed, adding water drops as necessary. That's all.

  • When they've become considerably soiled: Make sure the shoes are dry, then clean off any dirt. Take a damp cloth and wipe the shoes down, using a brush or you finger to clean out seams and stitching. Pay attention to tongue seams, sole stitching and lace eyelets. Allow the shoes to dry completely and polish as above, however, when first adding the polish, let them sit for an hour or two for the leather to absorb the polish well, this should ease the stress of the dirt drying the leather and the water affecting the panels.

As for brands, Kiwi is affordable and accesible to most people. There are other brands, so if something is easier for you to get, that's fine. If you need help with selection, just give your location and I can find some local options. As for colour, try and match the polish, but if you don't want to, you can go with neutral - it will do no harm, but your shoes may have a diminished lustre or show more patina ageing as you wear them, as it lacks any colouring. Definitely don't think an "Express" or "Rub-on" option will do the same, it won't and your shoes will suffer in the long term because of it.

That's the basics for at-home care. If you have any problems with them, like a seam opening or your soles are wearing in places, don't hesitate on bringing them to a cobbler. Ask around for recommendations, or check online review sites for your area to find a one. A good cobbler can do wonders to bring your shoes back to life, or modify them for your needs. I'm not sure what brand you have purchased, but some shoe companies offer rebuilding services for shoes that are significantly worn, but can still be repaired.

If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to ask, and good luck with your new shoes!"

I know this is r/AskMen, but I'd like to chime in as a woman who also generally goes braless (I'm a small B cup). My issue with going braless was the prominence of my nipples. They just seem to want everyone to look at them and that made me way too self conscious. I bought these and I love them! Now I can be braless and comfortable without it being obvious.

Orient has the Ray II and Mako II which are very similar. Same movement and features, and they each come in black and blue versions (I linked the blue ones because I like them, but its easy to find the black if that's your preference). An older model will be almost the same, but not have the hacking or hand-winding movement, and they have a pushbutton at the 2 o' clock. They might be a bit cheaper on Amazon though so that's your call.

Really wouldn't suggest it, there is a fairly similar Seiko 5 in your price range which would be of much better quality and within your price range. Parnis watches are known to be slightly questionable in their qc.

Citizen Men's BL5250-02L Eco-Drive Perpetual Calendar Chronograph Watch

Stock Photo | Photo of Item

Asking Price: $180 shipped | Amazon Price: $240

Received this watch as a birthday present from my parents a few weeks ago. Still have the box and manuals to go with it. No scratches or damage, very good condition. The strap you see in my picture is one that I bought and changed myself, so I still have the strap that came with the watch (the one in the stock photo) which is literally still brand new (haven't used it once). Please let me know if you would like a better picture, the one I took has pretty bad lighting because I was in a hurry this morning. One thing to note is that the stock photo has the dial with a relatively bright blue color, but the actual color of the dial is more darker blue and could be even seen as almost black.

Also to note: Completely solar powered and the hands also glow in the dark. Has stopwatch/timer setting and any other functions that normally come with a chronograph watch.

It's a beautiful watch, I only sell it because I think I might want to buy a more dressier watch for the money.

u/2ndChanceCharlie · 6 pointsr/frugalmalefashion

I don't know what's up with the two websites, but as a copper river bag owner let me give you two pieces of advice. 1. order the leather strap. It is expensive but it really makes the bag. 2. Order some Saddle Soap and wash the bag using a horse hair brush. They ship the bag with extra dye and oil on it and it will rub off on your clothes if you don't wash it before use.

These nipple covers are the best. I can wear them with a really tight top and they don't show at all. Just make sure you get the right color. I have both the adhesive and non-adhesive versions, but I like the adhesive version better for when I'm wearing a loose top.

also get a nice spring bar tool like the Bergeon 6767-F

things to think about when buying a strap include what kind of thickness you like, what kind of taper you like, what kind of stitching you want (ie, side whip stitch, top stitch, full stitch, etc), whether you want contrast stitching or stitching to match the color of the leather, what kind of texture you want on the leather (ie, smooth, pebbled, distressed, suede, alligator, etc), whether you want the strap to have padding or just flat, what kind of water resistance or splash resistance you like, etc

might help to do a google image search of [sarx045 strap] or something to get some ideas of what other people have done, or use some other similarly styled blue dial watch like [omega aqua terra strap] or whatever

Oooh, this is a fun challenge.

  • Knife: Spyderco Dragonfly 2 : $49

This is the most expensive item on my list, but I figure that with knives this is the best small EDC knife you can get for the money. I'm not a fan of large knives for daily carry, and the Dragonfly gets the job done.

  • Watch: Casio Men's Sport Analog Dive Watch : $17

While I initial thought was the F-91W, this watch seems to have far better water-resistance for roughly $7 more. Plus I prefer analog watches.

  • Wallet: Magpul Industries Daka Polymer Wallet : $17

While I've never used one of these personally, why not take the loss of all my stuff as an excuse to pare down how much bullshit I carry in my wallet? Reviews (outside of Amazon) seem pretty good and I'd love to give this thing a shot.

  • Multitool: Atwood Prybaby Chinese Knockoff : $3

I like having one of these kinds of dumb little multitools handy for prying and bottle-opening and other random tasks that I wouldn't want to abuse my knife with. At only $3 it's worth the space in my budget and my keychain. Speaking of keychains...

  • Keychain: Stainless Steel Aircraft Cable Keychain : $2

If you're like me, you often have to add and remove keys and other items from your keychain. Wire/cable keychains are the friggin best for this. I generally prefer the ball-and-socket types rather than the kind that screw closed, but I'm counting my dollars here.

  • Writing Utensil: Pilot G2 0.5mm (12-Pieces) : $10.75 per 12, ~$1 per ea.

I can't stand pens that use caps, and nothing writes as well for me as the Pilot G2. 0.5mm is about as fine a line as I want to get because the 0.38mm ones tend to get a bit scratchy on most paper. And if you'll allow me to count the cost as only a dollar rather than the price of a twelve-pack...

  • Bonus Round: Kingston Digital 32GB USB 2.0 Flash Drive : $9

With a few extra buck open in the budget, I realized that I've had one of these on my keychain for about as long as I can remember, and it pays to have one handy with a copy of your choice of documents, music, and other media. Super handy to keep available at all times.

    --

My total price for these tools puts me at $98, assuming the cost of only one pen. I assumed that I would be able to keep my phone, which provides me with enough illumination that I've never bothered with carrying a dedicated flashlight outside of the colder months when I'm usually wearing a coat. So I didn't bother with choosing one for this challenge. Anyone have any good suggestions for AAA, clicky tail-button flashlights under $20?

I'm extremely happy with my Citizen. Mine happens to be one of their "Drive" line, and it has an eco-drive movement. Eco-Drive means it's a quartz watch, powered by a solar panel. In theory you never have to change the battery. While mine has a metal bracelet, you can get similar watches with leather bands. The full collection is here. MSRP's shown there are misleading - I paid $149 for mine.

I'll also second the Seiko SKX007 (and SKX009) mentioned in other comments, one of those will probably be my next. The Seiko 5 series also gets some following here - it's about the cheapest you can get a serviceable automatic. The Seiko 5 is available in a pile of different colors and configurations for ~$55 to $80 depending on options. I've also been eyeing some of the Seiko Solar Dive Watches, but that's mostly because I'm looking specifically for a watch as a backup SCUBA timer. Orient also has a big line of fine looking mechanical watches, and they seem well-regarded around these parts of the internet.

Just to clarify (since I don't see a preference listed in your post...) - There are two major kinds of watch systems. Watch people call these 'Movements' - basically how does the watch keep time. You can either have Quartz, or Mechanical.

Quartz watches use a vibrating quartz crystal and a computer, then spit out the time on either a digital or mechanical dial. Within Quartz, you have battery drive quartz, solar quartz (eco-drive), and "Kinetic", where moving your hand generates electricity to power the watch.

Mechanical watches use a tiny rotating balance wheel to take the place of a pendulum, and use power for a wound-up spring to run a purely mechanical system of gears and levers and stuff to run the watch. Mechanical watches come in (mostly) two flavors - Automatic and Manual. Manuals you wind the spring by hand (think old pocket-watch), and automatics have a clever little weight inside them that automatically winds the spring as you move your arm around.

I like the idea of mechanical watches a lot. The knowledge that there's a bunch of tiny little gears and springs and levers all riding on jeweled bearings whirring away on my wrist just makes me super happy. Way more so than the steady electronic ticking of a quartz watch. But I'm also kind-of odd about things like that, so... If mechanical is important to you, you'll want to be looking for an automatic. If you just want a watch, I'd include the solars and kinetics - but I'd avoid anything battery driven.

u/beardtamer · 5 pointsr/Watches

This has a different color scheme, but a similar diver bezel. The solar seiko line is really pretty good imo if you are ok with quartz.

This one is more or less a similar color profile, but with a leather strap. I quite like it but it's up to you.

There are a butt-ton of others, it just take a bit of looking. It's hard for me to know what parts of the style is specifically the part you want. Do you want a "diver" look with a bezel, do you just like Rose gold accents, do you need a white face? Ect.

u/purabc · 5 pointsr/Watches

So, I just received my 'first' ever watch in the mail today! I've owned a cheap G-shock and a Scuderia Ferarri Watch before, but I don't consider them as 'watches'.

So at the age of 16 I've purchased my first ever watch and it is a Casio Edifice EF-503D-7A. I absolutely fell in love with this when I first started looking at watches sometime last year and although it was a tough decision Between the black and the white dial I settled on the white dial as it was my original choice. My friends and family tried convincing me to get the black dial since they thought it would suit me better since they thought the white one suits older men. But after a tough decision I settled on this and finally managed to pick it up a whole month after I ordered it! (I accidentally messed up my shipping address and it took a little while longer for it to get here : / ) but it has arrived! And here are photos of my unboxing

I know it's a cheap watch, but it's my first watch, the beginning of a new hobby and hopefully the beginning of a collection :D

p.s i will post pictures of it once I change the strap in the next couple of days so look forward to that :)

u/ZanderDogz · 5 pointsr/malefashionadvice

You have a few choices. You could either go quartz or automatic. Quartz is where you have a battery (and sometimes solar charging), and automatic is when the movement of your wrist winds a little spring in the watch. Automatic watches require resetting every few weeks because they are not as accurate, but some people think they are cool. I will assume you don't want to deal with that, but if you do, something from Seiko would be your #1 best bet for sure.

http://www.amazon.com/Seiko-SRP309-Classic-Automatic-Watch/dp/B00AJK9CL4/ref=sr_1_15?ie=UTF8&qid=1457419081&sr=8-15&keywords=seiko+diver

This particular watch (which is what I am wearing right now) looks delicate but by all means, it is not. It is meant for scuba diving so you can swim with it and it is very durable to the point where I have accidentally used it to block a lacrosse shot and it survived without a scratch.

If you want to go Quartz, and for 200$, probably solar, you will want to go Citizen.

http://www.amazon.com/Citizen-AW1361-10H-Avion-Stainless-Leather/dp/B00KCF7JL6/ref=sr_1_3?s=apparel&ie=UTF8&qid=1457419158&sr=1-3&nodeID=6358540011&keywords=citizen+watch

I don't have a citizen myself but they are very highly reviewed over at /r/watches.

http://www.amazon.com/Casio-GWM5610-1-G-Shock-Solar-Watch/dp/B007RWZHXO/ref=sr_1_6?s=apparel&ie=UTF8&qid=1457419331&sr=1-6&nodeID=6358540011&keywords=gshock+solar

(Both of those are solar power).

I would encourage you to look above your price range a bit, especially if you want to go for a Citizen, because it allows you to get something like this that will last you forever, but you can still get something great for under $200.

http://www.amazon.com/Citizen-AT4117-56H-Nighthawk-Stainless-Eco-Drive/dp/B00GTNPXUE/ref=sr_1_3?s=apparel&ie=UTF8&qid=1457419426&sr=1-3&nodeID=6358540011&keywords=citizen+nighthawk

The watches I listed here are much more versatile than most of the ones you linked to, (except for the G-SHOCK, don't wear that with a suit!) I will wear my Seiko Orange Monster with anything from a swim suit at the beach or with a black suit at a formal event. Buying from any of these three brands and not from a fashion/clothing brand that also makes watches will guarantee that your watch will last for a very long time. Feel free to PM me or ask for help at /r/watches if you have any more questions or want any recommendations.

Very Important:

  • Horsehair Brush
  • Some sort of cleaner (Lexol)
  • Some sort of conditioner (Lexol, Bick4)

    Optional:

  • Buffing Rag - could also just use old socks or cotton shirts. Make sure whatever you use is 100% cotton since nylon can scratch
  • Pigmented Cream Polish - Can be used to recolor damaged spots and build a patina. WILL DARKEN YOUR SHOES.
  • Cuir Gras - My preferred conditioner for greasy leather (like CXL). Not necessary unless you want to spend the extra money over Lexol.

Be sure to review the Leather Care section in the wiki to get a good overview of products and care techniques.
u/atxtonyc · 4 pointsr/goodyearwelt

Just to be clear, this is a horsehair brush. On the other hand, this is a horse hairbrush. You want the former, not the latter.

u/Drew_W · 4 pointsr/malefashionadvice

Don't make it too complicated.

  1. Take a brush to get rid of most of the dirt on them.
  2. Take a wet rag and rub the boots down (this should get rid of the paint stains, if not be more abrasive with the rag)
  3. (Optional, but suggested) Apply some sort of leather conditioner / protector (ex.Mink Oil Or Obenhaufs Leather Protector)

I get over a year of moderate use from these [reusable pasties.] (I don't know whether that brand is available there, though.) It feels so free if you don't have much in the way of boobage. Amaze and annoy all your big-boobed friends!

u/Two_Luffas · 4 pointsr/Construction

Yeah there's your problem. You need a pair of Thorogood moc toes. Most good moc toe boot companies don't size down to you but Thorogood go down to 5 D. The first time you wear them it will feel like your wearing snow shoes, but that's a good thing. There's a lot of surface area on the sole. The lace hooks are great at releaving pressure points on the upper foot/calf. Getting use to them will take a little time but you'll be dancing on rebar in no time.

I purchased this Seiko two weeks ago and really like it.

The face is dark-brown and only turns light-brown when viewed from certain angles in light/sun.

The hands and outside hour markers also illuminate in the dark which is a nice touch.

Whoa thanks /u/tross13!
I didn't expect you to deliver in such a short notice. I appreciate you took the time and effort to do this. This is so cool, people like you make this subreddit shine. I too got the Seiko bug.Got my first one two weeks ago. Since everyone seems to go for the very popular SNK007 (for a good reason, this watch is truly amazing) i wanted something a little different and went for the SNZ55 . I couldn't be happier. What everyone says is true : Seiko delivers a lot a bang for the buck. Thanks again OP!!

I got this band for work, I am a personal trainer and I needed something light and possible water resistant. It is a polyurethane band (has a rubber / hard plastic feel to it) You can find it on Amazon here for about $35

u/Goofball666 · 4 pointsr/pebble

Link to the Amazon page for that band: http://amzn.com/B004HZBOWM

I have one and it's been on my pebble since the end of March. No complaints about it other than the clasp is scratched from resting on the desk when I type. Adjustment was a bit of a PITA due to it being screw together link pins and not push-fit but that that's a once a blue moon kind of problem.

Edit: or this Seiko

u/raustin33 · 4 pointsr/Watches

I want to recommend the $40 Casio MDV106. I have one as my knock-around watch. My only reservation is the crystal. It's cheap something, and has scratched up fairly easily. And with your lifestyle that may be a deal breaker. It's fine for a $40 watch, but could possibly be too scratched up for you. It's a great watch otherwise. https://www.amazon.com/Casio-MDV106-1AV-Stainless-Steel-Watch/dp/B009KYJAJY

I don't know if the olive green is Army specific, or if it is also relevant to Marines – but the Victorinox INOX in green would be pretty cool: http://www.jomashop.com/victorinox-watch-241683-1.html

A cool Seiko, that's probably top of budget if SKX007 is the baseline, is the SBDN023. It's the new solar Tuna. There are a few color ways, but I'm linking the one that matches the SKX007 color which also seems to be the cheapest. Very cool watch. Wish I had a reason to own it. http://www.shoppinginjapan.net/lowercase-sbdn023

Another cool top of budget Seiko could be the SUN019. It's a horse of a watch, another I wish I had an excuse to own. Kinetic, which should be OK, but do google around and see if they stand up to physical abuse. https://www.amazon.com/Seiko-Prospex-SUN019-Kinetic-Divers/dp/B00MCB9CJK

And as far as quartz divers go, Citizen's EcoDrive gives you a bunch of options.

u/LowBrowOrbit · 4 pointsr/Watches

You've narrowed down your search to...still damn near every watch that exists.

But since you asked... Seiko Men's SSC017 Prospex Solar Stainless Steel Dive Watch.

u/johnwclark · 4 pointsr/Watches

Seiko Prospex Solar SSC017

Price: $180-$240

Movement: Solar Quartz V175

Style: Diver, Chronograph

Size: 43 mm ( not including the crown )

Link: Amazon SSC017 - black w/ blue , Amazon SSC015 - black w/ red , Amazon SSC031 - pepsi

Description: This is probably the most tool-tastic Seiko in this price range. It offers all the features of a dive watch, and it is ISO6425 certified, but it also has a full featured chronograph, complete with screwdown locks for the pushers. A number of people are not sold on the solar movement, but it is quartz accurate and durable. The bracelet is about the best Seiko bracelet I have seen anywhere close to this price, and it has a dive extension. Some people think the bracelet should have be 22mm, but I think the 20mm helps it wear a bit smaller. There are some other models that come on rubber straps, that for some reason are way more expensive, but they have some black with yellow options.

u/HostileFire · 4 pointsr/Watches

I have the exact same watch and purchased through Amazon; it's legit. It's one of those things where MSRP is ridiculously high but regularly sells for a lot less.

If you have medium to large-sized wrists however but really like the watch dial I've been eyeing this Citizen watch. I found the SNK807 to be kind of small, I would constantly need to adjust the time every few days, and the watch crown is pretty miniscule.

u/star_eater · 4 pointsr/Watches

Well, you guys have successfully infected me with the watch bug! As I mentioned in my last post, I'm waiting to treat myself to a very nice watch as a reward for completing a big work project. Until then, I can't help myself by buying a few cheaper pieces. This is my second Citizen, which I bought because it seemed like a steal at $110 on Amazon and I don't have any large diameter watches.

I think it's a beautiful watch, and I don't know if the pictures really display just how large it is at 45 mm. My one quibble is the strap. The Amazon reviews are not kidding when they say this thing has an absurdly thick strap, as you can see in the fifth picture. Far too thick. It feels cheap and it's a real pain to put the watch on or take it off, and nearly impossible to do one-handed.

I haven't yet delved into the world of NATO straps, so I welcome any suggestions you guys have on nice brown straps to replace the current one with. I was eyeing this one, but I know nothing about what brands or straps are reputable, so any feedback would be very helpful!

u/triguy616 · 4 pointsr/Watches

I recently put a list together for my sister-in-law that is almost exactly this criteria. Here are the highlights:

• Diver - Seiko $160 42mm

• Diver - Citizen $150 42mm

• Field - Seiko $133 44mm

• Field - Seiko $120 43mm

• Flieger - Ticino $145 44mm

• Pilot - Citizen $117 45mm

• Pilot - Citizen $195 42mm

• Chrono - Seiko $166 43mm

• Chrono - Seiko $94 43mm

• G-Shock - Casio (any)

• Other - Bulova $190 42mm

Sorry, a few were over your price range (her criteria were <$200), but it will get you in the ballpark. I'm going to make a post with all the watches I came up with soon.

Speaking of the watch band. Yea those do pull the hair. I found a polyurethane band that worked perfect for me to get away from the metal bands and still include links. Of course it's black, but it's super comfortable. Have to take care to check the occasional link barrel screw, one or two might loosen a little over time. I added a little blue loctite to fix that issue :D

I have a black Pebble, but I was never a fan of the gloss finish - I felt it made it look cheap. I therefore decided to make it matt which in my opinion makes it look much better. I combined the Gadget Wraps black matt screen protector with a Luminox black silicon strap. The blacks are not a 100% match but the difference is so small that I don't even notice.

Matt Black Wrap: http://www.gadgetwraps.com/devices/pebble-watch/matte-black-pebble-watch-wrap.html

I really like the end result. It's very understated. In fact most people don't even notice the watch, which I like.

Here's a pic!

u/The_Dark_Kniggit · 3 pointsr/Watches

Its a cheap Chinese quartz watch with a generic movement. You get what you pay for, so it might run for less than a month or it might run for a few years. It's almost certainly not waterproof and the sub dials don't do anything, and are probably painted on. You would probably be better off with something like this or this. This search will help you find more.

u/Aevum1 · 3 pointsr/Watches

Its plastic/resin,

you can use a fine grit abresive pad to remove the scratches, but in 99% of the cases you´re also going to remove the paint,

As for the crystal, a quick wipe with diamond paste can buff out any superficial scratch,

It looks like a beater, and retail price on that watch is currently 17 bucks + delivery.

http://www.amazon.com/Casio-MRW200H-1BV-Sport-Analog-Watch/dp/B005JVP0LE/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1370406889&sr=8-1&keywords=Casio+MRW-200H

My advise ? any scratch removal technique or repair will cause more damage then then good, and it goes against everything i believe in but... buy another one for special occasions (hell, even spend a bit more and get a metal one) and keep that one for occasions when you know its going to take damage.

u/turdbogls · 3 pointsr/Watches

i picked up the white dial version of this casio so I'd have something for my trip to the mountains next week.

edit: just adding here. bezel is a friction bezel (no clicks) and multi directional...so not great. the lume is terrible (dont count on it). It's quartz, so its accurate and ticking is not loud, day/date is a PITA to set at first...other than that though, great beater watch for $15

supposidly has 100m water resistance....but its build of solid plastic. 43mm, plastic/rubber strap, easy to read, rotating dial, day/date. its the perfect beater IMO. I expect it to get banged up and scratched to hell. if it makes it out of the mountains I'll be happy...if not, I only lost $15.

my only wish was that it had a regular lug setup. IIRC its like 18mm spring bars, but the actual width is closer to 22mm. I'd just like to put it on a Loop strap so if a spring bar did let lose, i'd still have the watch...but again...$15

I bought this Unicorn Mask and thought it would be fun to wear to a Burning Man festival. Well, I was right....and so very wrong. It started when i ate 23 mushroom caps and started dancing to a def leppard and skrillex mashudp. I met a cute girl who said that she absolutely loved my mask, we started dancing and she licked my horn... RAD RIGHT? Well it turns out the LSD in her saliva caused a massive unicorn population spawning epidemic in the desert the next day. After running 38 miles into the desert, I have to say that the mask doesn't hold up very well to long distance running. I'm slightly disappointed in the quality as it completely melted off my face. Seriously...I don't have a face anymore.

Hello! I know everyone has their own tastes, and this may very well have been exactly what you wanted. If you knew exactly what this watch was, and still felt okay spending what you did on it, then I'm happy for you and you can stop reading!

However, just in case you are not aware, I'd like to let you know to that TH watches are very cheaply made. Basically, anything like this, GUCCI, or a major fashion brand take very cheap parts, slap their name on it, and sell it at a crazy inflated price. Cartier is the only exception coming to mind right now.

Anyway, so with how much you spent on this watch, let me show you some alternatives that are much, much better.

[Here] (http://www.amazon.com/Seiko-Chronograph-Stainless-Leather-SSB097/dp/B00G4EJRNM/ref=sr_1_72?s=apparel&ie=UTF8&qid=1450830780&sr=1-72&nodeID=7141123011&keywords=chronograph&refinements=p_36%3A8000-11500), [here] (http://www.amazon.com/Casio-EF-547D-7A-Edifice-Stainless-Multi-Function/dp/B0183GMPCI/ref=sr_1_121?s=apparel&ie=UTF8&qid=1450831046&sr=1-121&nodeID=7141123011&keywords=chronograph&refinements=p_36%3A8000-11000), [here] (http://www.amazon.com/Seiko-SSB031-Chronograph-Stainless-Steel/dp/B007554XQU/ref=sr_1_4?s=apparel&ie=UTF8&qid=1450830693&sr=1-4&nodeID=7141123011&keywords=chronograph), and [here] (http://www.amazon.com/Lucien-Piccard-LP-11570-02S-Chronograph-Leather/dp/B009EDUTUU/ref=sr_1_11?s=apparel&ie=UTF8&qid=1450830716&sr=1-11&nodeID=7141123011&keywords=chronograph&refinements=p_36%3A8000-11500).

Each of these have a better movement, better steel, better craftsmanship, and feel much better than the TH does. Again, I hope this post helps you. Still though, it's good to see that you are getting into watches, and I hope you add some quality pieces to your collection!

Any questions, please ask!

There's a lot of options at that price point.

This is a very nice citizen eco-drive, for a few dollars more than what you're looking at.

If you wanted a chronograph that's a bit more unique than the one you looked at, This timex chrono offers the same functionality but a more unique look. It's only a 20mm band, however, but that can be swapped out pretty easily.

If you wanted, imo, a better casio chronograph, This Casio Tough Solar, or its other coloured counterparts, would do the job. A sportier look, but comes with atomic timekeeping across multiple continents, meaning you'll never really have to set the time.

This. If OP likes the style, it's easily one of the best deals for the money. However, it's only available in the US, and then only from Orient's website for $225.

If OP wants something more dressy: the Orient Bambino. However, note that there are three major different versions/styles, each with various dial colors.

For something different, how about a solar-powered watch? While they're quartz, you won't have to worry about battery changes for 10-15+ years (maybe 20+, if you're lucky). Citizen has a nice casual flieger-style watch, and Amazon has it for under $120. There are lots of choices here, from Citizen, Casio, and others.

Just picked up my first "pilot" watch. I wanted big, analog, high contrast, glow hands, simple, and cool looking: Citizen Sport

u/skyleth · 3 pointsr/Watches

I think the Orient Bambino would be a good pick (it's also available in a silver finish but black band so you'd have to change that yourself), more interesting than a sea of similar Bulova, Citizen, and Seiko quartz dress watches.

This Seiko Chronograph might be nice also but busier. And coming in well below budget is the Timex Forty Weekender.

u/ere737 · 3 pointsr/malefashionadvice

I'm trying to decide on a Timex Weekender to be paired mainly with casual/denim clothing. The more versatile, the better. It appears the main things to decide on are 1. case size (40mm or 38mm), 2. face style (chronograph or standard), 3. face color, and 4. strap color. Below are a few of the options I've been looking at; I'm open to other ideas also.

40mm

u/bigbootypanda · 3 pointsr/Watches

The Weekender, it's a quartz movement, and it can be fitted with basically any strap. You said your nephew is active, he can pick up a cloth NATO for himself for on ebay for something like $7-12.

Alternatively, you could do a Seiko 5, it's a rugged watch, but maybe slightly less suited to a 16 year old?

u/JitteryPenguin · 3 pointsr/malefashionadvice

when i went to my interview most of the IT guys were wearing slacks / chinos and button downs with sweaters. some with a tie, some without. That's a far nicer dress code than anywhere else I've ever worked. This is uncharted territory for me.

I wasn't really thinking of a traditional dress watch. just something simple. like This Timex honestly.

u/allan37825 · 3 pointsr/Watches

Hi yall,

I am new to this hobby and looking for a low-cost watch that is casual smart. I've read way too many reviews, but still cannot decide which one deserves my hard earn cash.

Current Options:

u/Kroftyy · 3 pointsr/Watches

I've been wearing an old ugly watch to work out of fear because it tends to get banged around alot, and while my main watch isn't expensive, I still didn't like the idea of wearing it to work.

To fix this situation, I decided to pick up a cheap, yet somewhat nice watch, and the Timex Weekender Chrono really caught my eye. I really like the design of the face and the colour, and while I wasn't a fan of the strap that it came with, I was able to buy a two piece navy NATO that matched the watch face.

I'm really happy with this buy, especially after putting on the new strap today. The case still sits a little higher than I am use to, but getting rid of the one piece NATO strap really helps to lower it.

Any thoughts on this strap/face combination?

I mean, ok, if we were to compare Orient and Seiko, I think Orient wins overall.

For instance, the Orient Ray II is $159:
https://www.amazon.com/Orient-Japanese-Automatic-Stainless-Diving/dp/B01AK5TQE0/ref=sr_1_1?s=apparel&ie=UTF8&qid=1510583470&sr=1-1&nodeID=7141123011&psd=1&keywords=orient+ray+II

The Direct Seiko Competition (SKX009) is $203:
https://www.amazon.com/Seiko-SKX009K2-Divers-Automatic-Stainless/dp/B000OP1M6M/ref=sr_1_1?s=apparel&ie=UTF8&qid=1510583493&sr=1-1&nodeID=7141123011&psd=1&keywords=seiko+skx

The Orient gets you a bit better bang for the buck with hacking and handwinding. Something that the Seiko doesn't give you. Now if we look at the look at Seiko's cheaper option, the SNZF15 at $139:

https://www.amazon.com/Seiko-Stainless-Steel-Automatic-SNZF15/dp/B001ELSSOO/ref=sr_1_16?s=apparel&ie=UTF8&qid=1510583493&sr=1-16&nodeID=7141123011&psd=1&keywords=seiko+skx

The Seiko SNZF15 doesn't hack or handwind, has only 100m water resistance, and although I haven't seen the two side by side, I'm willing to bet that Orient has slightly better quality materials/finishing than the Seiko 5.

Now the amusing thing about the Invicta is this, it uses Seiko's own movement that they use for $200-800 watches, yet they pack it in watches that come in under $100. Their quality and materials aren't even that bad, no worse than Seiko 5!

Is this different from the one that currently sells for $175 new on Amazon?

u/Jarosticy · 3 pointsr/Watches

Just got an Orient Ray II for my birthday off Amazon.

I really like it.

Something like this I think!

Do you have a costume yet?!

Edit: I am super entertained by this too 🤣

A couple of questions: do you care about the movement (mechanical/automatic vs quartz)? Do you want a sporty watch or more of a dress watch?

My first recommendation is the Citizen Eco drive perpetual

Edit: my bad, that didn't have the month. This one does though.

I was going to share my Citizen, which has a lot of the design cues, http://www.amazon.com/Citizen-CA0265-59E-Eco-Drive-Titanium-Watch/dp/B005MKGPC0 but it doesn't have the tach.

This one, http://www.amazon.com/Citizen-BL5250-02L-Eco-Drive-Leather-Titanium/dp/B000EQS0WK is pretty sweet, has the tach on leather strap. But, no sapphire crystal.

u/postmodest · 3 pointsr/Watches

Everyone gets one of these Citizen chronographs: Citizen Men's BL5250-02L Titanium Eco-Drive Watch with Leather Band https://www.amazon.com/dp/B000EQS0WK/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_lQXxzb589ZXB5

Throw in $12/ea for replacement silicone bands and you almost all match!

u/SirLaxer · 3 pointsr/Watches

Exactly. A watch is like a pair of shoes: you wouldn't wear penny loafers when going out for a run, and you wouldn't wear sneakers at a funeral. There are a ton of different kinds of watches (like the Rolex Submariner compared to an Omega Speedster...different functions for different types of people and different activities), and within those categories there are different stylistic choices that are based on personal tastes (modern and sleek, big and bulky, etc).

I could recommend something like the Hamilton Khaki Field, or something like a Seiko diver, or a Citizen Eco-Drive chronograph, or the popular Seiko SARB065. Very different watches for different types of people and different occasions.

u/belugarooster · 3 pointsr/Watches
u/pugnaciousp · 3 pointsr/Watches

Sorry I couldn't provide details earlier, I've been busy with work.

The watch is a Citizen BL5250-02L. I've always wanted an Eco-Drive and decided to pull the trigger on this one as a birthday gift to myself. It's just so beautiful! If you're looking for nice quartz in the $250 range, I highly recommend this watch.

The shirt is from Land's End (ON SALE for $20!)

u/C0smo__Kramer · 3 pointsr/Watches

That style is called a field watch, based on classic military models dating back to WW2. Here's a couple that I like that are a little smaller and a little cheaper. Both automatic, both Swiss companies (ETA movements).

Hamilton Khaki

Victorinox Infantry

u/h2g2Ben · 3 pointsr/malefashionadvice

Retail price on the Khakis isn't terribly far out of your price range - they're great american made watches.

u/GiantTortoise · 3 pointsr/Watches

What models are you looking at? Looks like most Khaki's I see on there have an average of 4 or 4.5 stars. Keep in mind people are more likely to leave a review when something goes wrong than when it goes well.

I have this one: http://amzn.com/B000J179X6, which overall has great reviews on Amazon.

I've personally had mine for months, wearing it almost every day, been in rain lots of time, survived water rides at Disney World. Never swam with it, but no hint of moisture or anything.

I don't baby it and it's still in fantastic shape, not a scratch on it that I can see, no problems. Never left a review though. :)

Keeps as expected time for this movement, about 15 seconds fast per day.

Also, all watches on Amazon include a warranty, even if not from manufacturer. They have an Asurion warranty which I've heard is good, though I've never used it.

u/mtg4l · 3 pointsr/malefashionadvice

Steve Madden Hamilten Chukkas. 60 bucks, perfect for my tight budget. I need a new pair of nice tan-colored shoes to go with my navy blue slims.

No! The conditioner and Mink Oil included in the Basic Care are not made for the smooth leather of Beckmans. Here's what you need:

  1. horsehair brush
  2. Lexol conditioner
  3. Burgundy shoe cream to touch up scuffs; I use Meltonian
  4. Rags for cleaning, applying conditioner and shoe cream, and polishing

u/ouchcube · 3 pointsr/goodyearwelt

My first GYW pair as well, also black cherry. I picked up a Lexol Leather Care Kit that comes with leather cleaner and conditioner. I wore them a few times and then cleaned and conditioned them according to the kit instructions. After each wear I brush them down with a horse hair brush and when I'm not wearing them I put in shoe trees.

I clean/condition them after about 5-6 weeks, unless I get them really muddy or something. There are surely others on this sub with better knowledge of leather care, but this routine has been working fine for me so far. Most will recommend giving them 24 hours to rest after wearing, but, y'know, they're boots.

u/imaginarypunctuation · 3 pointsr/femalefashionadvice

the stuff in the guides on /r/goodyearwelt was very helpful for me. after reading the stuff there, i bought some venetian cream and a horsehair brush. along with some soft cloths, i can do a pretty good leather care job.

i think the biggest things to note are: don't wear the same pair two days in a row, to give them time to dry out. condition when necessary. use boot trees if you can.

u/zygie · 3 pointsr/Watches

You have to search for the lug width to determine which size band you need. Googling gives me a general consensus of 18mm, but a few listings say 19mm or 17mm, so it'd be best to measure yours when you get it.

Here's the most recent buying guide for watch accessories. Check out the recommendations for watch strap stores.

At the minimum, you'd need a decent spring bar tool for changing the strap, like this.

Finally, no it's perfectly fine having multiple straps for one watch as it really does change up the look.

I also don't know what the minute hand is for.

u/TheSuperChronics · 3 pointsr/Watches

bergeon 6767-F is the best. As other people said, other ones on Amazon are okay, like this one, but like in all aspects of life.. you get what you pay for.

The Bergeon is far better build quality and feels sturdier. The cheap one I posted is decent, but it doesn't feel that well made and the tips aren't great. Someone said the Burgeon F for bracelets and some other model for other bands, but If you get the F model (one I posted) it will work find for leather/rubber bands. The other way around not so much, because the F has a finer tip. So if you're only getting one, get the Burgeon 6767-F

Source: I have both spring bar remover tools that I linked

I bought the cheaper one first thinking, how can there be a difference ? Ever since buying the Burgeon one, I haven't used the cheaper, crappier one. Go for quality

u/skriefal · 3 pointsr/Watches

There are holes in the inside portion of the lugs to hold the spring bar. But on most watches those holes don't go all the way through the lugs.

A Bergeon spring bar tool will help you pop out the spring bars from underneath. Cheaper options are available, but the Bergeon tool will last much longer and is a good investment if you'll be doing this task more than once or twice.

u/Major_Burnside · 3 pointsr/Watches

Bear advice I can give is to have the right tools, take your time, and putting a little masking tape on the lugs can also help to avoid scratches. I use this and it works great,I have both the fine and the standard fork for it: https://www.amazon.com/Bergeon-6767-F-Watch-Spring-Tool/dp/B001IZT8R2

u/Preston205 · 3 pointsr/Watches

For a quality spring bar tool, check out the Bergeon 6767 a bit pricey compared to the Chinese ones but certainly worth it.

u/Phauly1 · 3 pointsr/Watches
u/stainedglasstrout · 3 pointsr/Watches

Nah, get a Springbar tool they're cheap enough and you can swap out the straps in about 1 minute. Re-sizing a metal bracelet is hard but on a cheap watch I use a bobby pin and my bench vise and push the watch down on the needle and it pops the bar out easily. A price bracelet Id take to a jeweler and pay $5-10 to have them fit it, most do it for free though.

u/WatchandThings · 3 pointsr/Watches

Even brand new tool can be too dull. I used to have a collection of free spring bar tools that I used to flip through. For most strap changes they were good enough, but there were few stiff straps or tight bracelets that would give me all the trouble and I would have so many scratches on the case for my troubles. After I stabbed myself struggling with a strap change, I decided to stop being cheap and put down the whole $17 and ordered a proper spring bar tool. I haven't had a single trouble with spring bar since. I can't say that it's night and day since free tools got the job done 90% of the time, but that 10% makes a difference.

do you mean SNN241? there is no SNN24, is it this one?

SNN241

if so, when you push the crown in after setting the time, do you see the small hand in the sub dial at 6:00 moving? on a chronograph the large second hand only moves when you engage the chrono using the pushers. the "running" seconds is usually done by the small hand on a sub dial.

next, if the small seconds hand does not turn, does the minute hand move with time? for example, if you set the time and leave the watch for say 15 mins, does the minute hand reflect that 15 mins has gone by?

many Seiko Mecha-quartz like the VK64 have no rinnig seconds, although I dont think this is a mecha-quartz movement.

let me know, and post some pics or video of what you are doing, that might help.

of course it could just be defective, but lets find out first.

u/benetgladwin · 3 pointsr/Watches

Hello! Off the top just a quick thank you to r/Watches for being so helpful and welcoming. I purchased my first watch in 2015, a Fossil chronograph, which served me well considering I knew nothing about watches when I bought it. Since then I have developed an interest, which this sub helped to kindle.

I received this watch, the Seiko SNN241 Chronograph, from my dad and step-mom as a belated graduation gift in August. Since then I have worn it almost daily. I quite like the date window, which my previous watch did not have. Another unique note is that the second hand is actually the bottom dial; the "main" second hand is used for the stopwatch function.

Have a great weekend folks!

This is probably the wrong sub for this. Try /r/watches. It's also a really large topic.

You can spend as much or as little on watches as you want. /r/watches has some recommendations for all budgets.

Some examples:

  • Bulova budget dress watch
  • Very frugal Timex Weekender as a more casual watch
  • Citizen Eco-Drive as more of a sports watch

Sports watches tend to work well casually and in business causal environments and in part explains the popularity of grails such as a Rolex Submariner or cheaper versions like an Omega Seamaster or Speedmaster.

I'd highly advise you to do some research and figure out what exactly you want and how much you really want to spend here.

Personally I'd stay away from the Android wearables and similar but YMMV. On /r/watches you'll likely find many traditionalists who feel the same way. In some ways the desire to even have a watch partways makes you a traditionalist.
u/Neldonado · 2 pointsr/Watches
u/PShap · 2 pointsr/Watches

Well you aren't going to get an automatic chrono for $150-$200. You can get a manual mechanical chrono that looks similar for $500ish from Techne, but it has a display back without much room for engraving.

You could try this eco drive which won't require battery change, but it is a quartz movement (and also $40 over your limit), and doesn't have much room for engraving.

I just honestly don't think you're going to get everything you want, so it'd be helpful if you could identify which factors are most important.

u/wags_01 · 2 pointsr/EDC

Citizen is pretty good in the 2-300 bracket. I prefer leather or steel over canvas, myself though.

You could go subdued with this one: http://www.amazon.com/Citizen-BM7100-59E-Corso-Drive-Dress/dp/B004JKBEUM/

Or maybe a little more casual: http://www.amazon.com/Citizen-BL5250-02L-Titanium-Eco-Drive-Leather/dp/B000EQS0WK/

Sorry man, I looked all over and this is the only one I could find: link. No clue how safe that website is or anything so I definitely can't recommend buying from it. However, there is this Citizen on Amazon that looks similar: link. There are also various Seiko watches that have a similar look as well in the Amazon suggestions. Wish I could help more but unfortunately it really does look like it's sold out nearly everywhere. I'll keep on looking for similar watches though and let you know. Really hate to say it but you might have to settle with one that looks similar. But I'll keep searching :).

u/CarSnob · 2 pointsr/Watches

I mean, there's the Maratac Pilot/Mid Pilot, but that may be a little thick for your liking. That Rodina you have in the album is already within your price range too, look here. I'm not 100% sure that the Rodina is water resistant though. I personally like something like this Hamilton, and you can probably find one used that's within your price range.

As for your questions, the automatic shouldn't be too loud, but if you're really trying to hear it, you might. Some people actually like that. Now, it's not going to sound like you have a ratchet stuck to your wrist, but I'm saying that it could be noticeable. As for the second question, it really depends on how hard you fall, and where you fall. If you're falling off your bike all the time, you may want a quartz watch that will be able to handle more of a beating. If you don't plan on falling off your bike that often, or at speed, it shouldn't be that much of an issue. As for the vibrations, that's another variable. If you're riding across gravel and speedbumps, that might be a bigger problem than, say, a flat road or sidewalk. If your commute is really rigorous, you might just want to buy a quartz watch and not have to worry about anything except the battery. But I do feel that there is something to be said for the novelty of having a tiny little clock with gears and springs and levers and jewels ceaselessly beating away on your wrist. Just my two cents.

u/Minus-Celsius · 2 pointsr/Watches

If you're going to drop anything over $200 on a watch, I'd consider getting a mechanical watch.

They're not electronic at all, they rely solely on precision engineering, manufacturing, assembly, and quality control to function at all -- and they are accurate to within 0.01%.

To me, that is really cool, and I feel a lot of pride that people worked so hard on something so small. I also like the sweep seconds over the jump-pause of a quartz movement.

Cons: mechanical watches are more expensive to manufacture, have much lower accuracy (0.01% error for a quartz watch would be horrible, they're at 2-3 orders of magnitude better than that, for even crap quartz), and require you to wear them (automatic) or handwind them (manual wind) daily to function.

I would not necessarily recommend them, but Fossil has a wide selection you can see what looks you like. Their durability is pretty low and they charge a lot (even in a high margin industry, they charge a lot for how much watch you get), but they have most modern watch styles.

Hamilton Field Khaki Here with metal bracelet is a really flexible. It can be dressed up or down, and goes with other straps, like leather or nato. When you asked for versatile, that was the first watch I thought of.

u/stitime · 2 pointsr/Watches

Depends what you consider a decent watch... Some won't settle for anything but a watch with an in-house Swiss movement. If horology is important to you, wait and save up. But, if you don't care about this, I must say that the Hamilton Khaki/Pilot lineup is fantastic. The ETA movement is solid and will be relatively cheap to service. I used to have a Hamilton Khaki, until I drank a bit too much and it fell off my wrist because I had a cheapo band, and well I was drunk. I was/still am devastated.
This is what I had..

u/FirstLurker · 2 pointsr/Watches

Thanks for the comment. I don't know how I mixed those up, but here is the 38mm one. What would be considered a large watch in terms of size? I always thought 38mm was the "standard" watch size.

u/skepticaljesus · 2 pointsr/Watches

i think either are fine watches, and perfectly worthy gifts, but in my honest opinion neither strike me as "last forever family heirloom" material. The Citizen is not what I would call a timeless design and is likely to look dated at some point. The Shinola is a little more classic but... it's a cheap quartz movement in a well-designed but somewhat cheaply made case. And while there's absolutely no shame in wearing or enjoying either of these watches, neither seems like the kind of thing that will be treasured for generations either.

In the end, though, the best gifts are the ones given with thought and consideration for what the recipient might like. You love your husband, and I bet you know what he'd like. Follow your heart, engrave something thoughtful on it, and I'm sure he'll love it.

For my tastes, in this price range, if you want something stylish I'd look at a visodate, or if you want something a little plainer, try something military-inspired like this junkers or Hamilton field watch. For something a little dressier, also consider a SARB033. Also, I believe all of those watches are available in either black or white if that's a preference.

The designs of those watches are all much more classic and likely to age a bit more gracefully.

u/cjcs · 2 pointsr/everymanshouldknow

This kind of thing is generally very open to interpretation depending upon your personal sense of style, so feel free to pick and choose from everyone's suggestions. Here are what I'd call the, "essentials" that make up my closet. [Note: Due to time constraints I will come back later and update this post with more items. For now here are some formal pieces and shoes.]

Formal Wear:

  • One tailored, well-fitting suit. Invest in getting the proper alterations done goes a long way, and can make cheaper suits look ten times better than their more expensive counterparts. Go with charcoal or navy as a first choice in color (charcoal leans slightly more formal, navy slightly more casual). - J.Crew Factory Thompson
  • When you're dressing formally, you want to look your absolute best. A baggy or ill-fitting dress shirt can undo all the work put into making your suit perfectly. Invest in either made-to-measure items, or take them to your tailor. The upfront cost may be high, but it's a great investment that you'll be thankful for when you stand out in the sea of frumpy shirted guys wearing sack suits. The number of shirts you should own will ultimately depend on how often you find yourself needing to dress up, but I'd recommend having 1-2 white, one light blue, and one light pink shirts.

    Shoes:

Beeswax CDB's: ~$75

[Grey blazer] (http://www.hm.com/us/product/02190?article=02190-A): $149

Interesting Socks: $14.50

Is around $400 (This might make it a little more casual and bring the price point down $20). It works with almost any occasion except for an extremely active date, where you'll be running around doing cute things... just feel confident that you look good.

u/SeonKi · 2 pointsr/frugalmalefashion

The color on shoemetro still looks duller than the color here: http://www.amazon.com/Clarks-Originals-Mens-Desert-Beeswax/dp/B000WUAP9E/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1367814822&sr=8-1&keywords=clark%27s+desert+boots+beeswax

I've been waiting forever for CDB's to go on sale and I don't know if I'm just being paranoid, but the shade and the fact that it says "true" color is beeswax is keeping me from pulling the trigger. I'm still picking the color "brown" on the site.

Generally, a horsehair shoe brush like this one and some conditioner like a bick 4 or whatever saphir product suits the leather on your shoes should be fine. Just remember to condition sparingly (once every 3-4 months tops).

u/1841lodger · 2 pointsr/malefashionadvice

For my brown leather shoes, I use this to apply this. And then I hit it with this. There's a lot of different ways to go about it though. Put This On had an episode dedicated to shoes and they demonstrate how to polish your shoes in the film. I highly recommend checking it out (along with their other videos - very good stuff). Good luck.

u/vocabularylessons · 2 pointsr/malefashionadvice

Oh, definitely don't need formal shoes. All you might want is a leather conditioner like Lexol or Bick 4 and a brush. Might wanna eventually pick up a pair of shoes that are good/comfortable for being on your feet all day at work (which you might have already).

u/4ad · 2 pointsr/Romania

Eu folosesc Kiwi 100% Horsehair Shine Brush.

Aia e moartea pielii.

Happy to help!

Generally, most bracelets on watches can be easily swapped out unless they're integrated into the case or have an uncommon size or shape. Keep in mind though, you will need a spring bar tool to swap bracelets/bands. Takes a bit of getting used to, but it's quite easy once you figure it out. If you don't want to do it yourself, it's an easy and cheap fix at a local watch-maker.

I see this one recommended often, but I've been doing okay with the free ones that often come bundled with straps.

u/BigZippo · 2 pointsr/edc_raffle

Buy this: Bergeon 6767-F Watch Spring Bar Tool - Long Stainless Steel Handle with Replaceable Screw In Fine Tool End https://www.amazon.ca/dp/B001IZT8R2/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_SFMWAb7A77HCN

It’s the most useful tool anyone with a watch should own.

u/SPAS115 · 2 pointsr/Watches

Nice pickup, I'm in the market for a affordable Bauhaus-styled watch.

I believe this watch has a 20mm lug width, so here we go.

For NATO straps, I think a blue and white stripe one will suffice, but you can look here to see what you might fancy. $13 here.

If you want something similar to a NATO but more 'dressy', you can buy a perlon strap. Search for Eulit on eBay.

By 'link', I don't know if you mean like a metal bracelet, but if you want to achieve something like this (not my photo), then you can buy something similar here for $10. If you want, you can spend more to get better quality, but this one gets the job/look accomplished.

For leather, I think any kind and color goes well. Recommended bands are Hadley Roma, Panatime, and Hirsch if you want to spend a bit more.

Don't forget a spring bar tool to switch out the straps, option 1 and option 2.

Hope this helps and welcome to the watch world! Post pics once you find something.

u/Donberakon · 2 pointsr/Watches

Looks like a Bergeon 6767-F, which you can buy from [Amazon] (https://www.amazon.com/Bergeon-6767-F-Watch-Spring-Tool/dp/B001IZT8R2) or [this other site] (http://www.esslinger.com/bergeon-6767-f-watch-band-tool-swiss-spring-bar-tool/). The 6767-F has a small fork and pin-pusher type deal which are both screwed in place. In my experience, they come loose when you're finagling a stubborn springbar or something.

I'd recommend one with collets holding the tool ends in place, like [this one from Otto Frei] (http://www.ofrei.com/page_226.html) or the one right below it which is a Bergeon 6111. They both have a combination small fork/pin-pusher and a larger "spade" on the other end for better prying action to reduce the chance of scratching.

u/Cool_Cherry_Cream · 2 pointsr/Watchexchange

I've been using the same Bergeron tool I picked up on Amazon for about 3-4 years with no issues.

If nothing pops up used, I'd just spend the $20 and get this bad boy with Prime shipping.

u/Weenie · 2 pointsr/Watches

I've got a cheapo that is already wearing out after a couple dozen uses. It worked great at first, but the metal is pretty cheap. If you can swing the extra money, Bergeon is supposed to be the bee's knees. I think that will be my next.

u/j1mdan1els · 2 pointsr/Watches

The tool that you've linked is in the "cheap and nasty" category and will bend like hell when you use it, risking scratches on the watch. This one is a much better choice. As for the strap, that's a personal choice.

I realise you said you were injured but any jeweller will swap out the strap for you free of charge if you are able to get to them (and buy the strap from them).

One last thing, the bracelet you pictured is steel with "end pieces", this video shows how to remove that type of strap if you are going to do this yourself.

u/Sparecash · 2 pointsr/Watchexchange

No worries, thanks for the pic! Is this the tool you are referring to?

I honestly always thought I would be a SARB033 kind of guy, but man that white dial with the brown strap looks amazing. For the brown strap, can you comment on how much wear it has?

Finally for pricing, would you do $320 for the watch/strap bundle?

u/pepe_le_shoe · 2 pointsr/Watches

> brand name watch

All watches will have a brand name. Do you mean like a designer brand name? Because those will be garbage watches.

For $500 dollars and with no other information, I'd recommend buying a Seiko Sarb033 and whatever leather strap you want (I recommend the brand Hirsch), and a spring bar tool.

You should never buy a watch for the strap it comes on a) because most watches come on bad straps, even a lot of good watches, and b) you can just buy straps and put whatever strap you want on a watch.

If there's anything else about the style of the watch you want, like colour, size, etc, that would let us made more recommendations.

u/Friday1995 · 2 pointsr/Watches

I also recommend the Bergeon. Their fork tips work very well. Cheap ones may be too thick and can't remove the spring bar. https://www.amazon.com/Bergeon-6767-F-Watch-Spring-Tool/dp/B001IZT8R2

If your cup size is small, try Nippies. I also have a wide rib cage with small breasts and bra fitting is very challenging. I don’t need a bra for support, just to keep my nipples from poking through my shirt. Nippies take care of that. I LOVE not having a band around my chest.

I've heard really good things about thorogood for a cheaper option to things like redwings/wolverine 1000 mile boots, but I can't personally attest to their quality as I'm in a similar boat shopping for a pair of boots.

(I go to school in VT, so I'm going to have similar need for a rugged boot)

u/imsellingmyfoot · 2 pointsr/malefashionadvice

I can attest to the Thorogoods. I've got these and they're great. Nice quality leather, made in USA, easy break in, and they clean up well. I've got a coat of Obenaulf's on them and they darken a little.

These are the thorogood a that I am talking about.. They use the same Lester as red wings, use a very high quality wedge sole, and prity much only differ from RWs in that they have a synthetic mid-sole... I would probably consider these higher quality than the boots that you linked... Thorogood also has a premium line that goes for $150, but I honestly haven't heard much about them.
Also, something to note is that good leather will darken substantially with use (especially oiled leather)... If you were to water seal either boot it would darken quite a bit... I would check out "frostinhisbones" on tumblr and see what his boots look like... That is simply from wear and sno seal (they are the ones that i linked)

u/praetordave · 2 pointsr/Watches

I'm sort of in the same boat as you. I've been wearing a timex iron man since I was 12. I never take it off. When I was getting married earlier this year, I decided to buy myself something a little nicer. I settled on a Seiko SNN241. I know it's not a super expensive or nice watch, but for me this was stepping up. So I started wearing it daily, switching to my venerable iron man for the gym or camping. Well about a week after getting it, I brushed past a stainless steel table at the restaurant I work at and put a huge scratch in the crystal right over the 6. I was rather devastated.

So now it sits on my night stand, while my iron man is pressed back into service on my wrist. I still put the seiko on for when I'm going out and such, but that one scratch seriously killed wearing an 'expensive' watch daily for me. Sorry to be such a downer, the story seemed relevant.

u/ethanzh · 2 pointsr/Watches

I went with this one, it was on sale for $138 and just couldn't pass it up. I feel you, saving might have been better but I think the 5 is worth it.

u/turk11042 · 2 pointsr/Seiko

how about a SNZH55. Comes on a bracelet but it can be dressed down on a nice brown leather strap like this for a younger look

u/TheBoble · 2 pointsr/Watches

Hi all. I'm looking into purchasing a new watch with a budget of about $250. I want to get something a little dressier, as most of what I have tends to be more "sport" looking.

I understand Seiko fits some of these requirements, but I just don't love how they look. I was considering this https://www.amazon.com/Citizen-Eco-Drive-Quartz-Stainless-Leather/dp/B079995GSP
It is somewhat between sport and dress, and I love the silver face.

If possible, I'd like something solar powered. I have big wrists so anything less than 40mm looks tiny on my arm.

Thanks!

Edit: I take back what I said about Seiko and I'm considering this boi https://www.amazon.com/Seiko-SNZH55-Automatic-Black-Stainless/dp/B0045D6570/ref=pd_sbs_241_42?_encoding=UTF8&pd_rd_i=B0045D6570&pd_rd_r=0fe56069-b6d5-11e8-b96a-75051c3f57a5&pd_rd_w=5FeUn&pd_rd_wg=C4sYy&pf_rd_i=desktop-dp-sims&pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_p=8017971983328801850&pf_rd_r=F7H19SASNW0D43Y3ES1R&pf_rd_s=desktop-dp-sims&pf_rd_t=40701&psc=1&refRID=F7H19SASNW0D43Y3ES1R

I bought this watch after looking through the Buying Guide thread. Someone mentioned the SEIKO 5 SNZH55 and in that comment the Fifty Five fathoms mod was mentioned. Intrigued, I looked it up and the original watch by Blancpain and was blown away. This is the second watch in my collection (My first being a Tissot Visodate), and I love this very much.

I'm very new to watches but spend waaaay too much time on this sub. I am no where near delicate enough to mod a watch on my own, so I bought this one modded off of eBay.

I've ordered a Brady Strap with Gold stitching to replace the original band with. Loving this watch so far.

I like diver watches, hehe. This band is a replacement for the Luminox 3000 series dive watches. It's 22mm in size so it doesn't fit our watches. Have no fear. Since this band is polyurethane, it can be easily modified. I used a x-acto to notch out 2mm on both sides. You can't even tell it's modded. :) You can get it [here] (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B004HZBOWM?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_search_detailpage) But it's currently out of stock. There's a 23mm band here. Good luck!

u/MathewC · 2 pointsr/Watches

I got the idea from this thread: http://forums.watchuseek.com/f17/what-square-2638617-2.html

The ebay seller was long gone, but I contacted the OP and he helped me hunt down one down for me on Amazon, for which I am very grateful.

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B004HZBOWM/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

This one is actually different than the one he has. I had to cut it to fit the 16mm lugs, and the outside diameter of the bracelet is slightly too short. The correct one was like $45 after shipping, and not prime. This one was $28 for Prime. I'm glad I did this one too, because it's barely a $28 bracelet. I like the bracelet itself, but the clasp is absolute shit. I may try and replace that in the future. There's a real composite bracelet made by Casio, but I just didn't like the way it looked.

The stock band for this watch is actually really good. It's soft (softer than the import model) and comfortable.

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B004HZBOWM/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o03_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

By far the best one that I've had. It's highly adjustable to fit perfectly on any wrist, waterproof (water actually beads up instead of smearing all over the place), and has the look of a steel type link without the painful hair/skin pinching. Very lightweight. You just need to shave off a little bit off the end of the band for it to fit, which is a very fast and easy procedure.

u/kodek64 · 2 pointsr/pebble

Here is the strap that I'm using in the video:
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B004HZBOWM/ref=oh_details_o06_s00_i00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Keep in mind that they have made it a bit thicker on the ends, and it will require some shaving off the sides with a sharp blade. It's not hard, and it's not too risky, but it IS a modification you have to make before it actually fits in the Pebble.

u/Bluegill15 · 2 pointsr/surfing

People are sugggesting the cheap Casios which are fine, but I would avoid the F-91W because it has buttons which saltwater/sand can jam. I use this one instead.

u/-hh · 2 pointsr/scuba

Sorry, the current watch is an analog style Citizen Eco-Drive. Here's a link to it on Amazon.

Over the years, I've had (& killed) a half dozen Casio's. Some were digital, some were analog ... none were G-Shocks.

If I were to buy a cheap Casio dive watch today, I'd probably check out this one or this one and of these two, I'd probably choose the latter, as it has a 200m rating instead of 100m and its been my impression that Casio's depth ratings have gotten less robust over the years.

This would be more inexpensive. I haven't picked it up, but from what I understand the SSB line have a special meca-quartz movement. It is a quartz with a few mechanical parts which allow the chronograph hand to move in 1/5 seconds.

u/tommy2014015 · 2 pointsr/Watches

Two watches come to mind when you mention the speedmaster, Tissot has a nice offering in the Tissot V8 though it is a quartz watch, as well as the Seiko which, both of which look really nice and are kind of homages to the speedmaster. At that price range if you want a really nice finish on a Speedmasteresque watch it's possible to find but the quartz in that range are beautiful and certainly worth consideration. I'm not familiar with automatic speedmasteresque watches in that price range but if that's what you want let me know and I'll look around for you!

seiko diver chrono if you haven't seen this one already

u/TheStuffle · 2 pointsr/Watches

This one? There's a ton of info on that watch, and it seems really popular. I just don't really like the chrono-diver thing (and already have a diver). Also, as far as I can tell, they should have very similar movements.

To be honest, Citizen has really disappointed me in their budget chronograph designs. All of them look either overly complex or silly, or both. There is one that comes so close, but then they ruined it with the lime green hands :\

I'm really wanting something with the spirit of a TAG Carrera, but it seems hard to find a solar-chrono that doesn't look like something a 6th grader would find attractive.

u/dreamsofpinkflamingo · 2 pointsr/Seiko

Seiko makes a solar powered quartz diver with chrono that has a simlar look but not the same colour. Have a look at ssc017 http://www.amazon.com/Seiko-SSC017-Solar-Stainless-Steel/dp/B00756GRUE

u/CombatJack1 · 2 pointsr/Watches

if I had to guess I'd say it was this one

u/kurazaybo · 2 pointsr/Watches

I would go for a quartz watch, I've accidentally dropped a couple of automatics. One stopped and had to be repaired and the other probably got misadjusted and started losing time.

These are not specifically guaranteed to survive shock, but will be fine in most circumstances. Check the Seiko Solar. I like the adventure. For a bit more you can get a diver. The metal bracelet will hold up much better than leather (or fake leather). There are more dressy options within the seiko solar, and other chronos.

You can get an eco drive too.

I think the 4r36 movement is more interesting than the one on the Seiko Skx007. It features hacking and handwinding and (supposedly) better accuracy. I really liked the SRP 147, I looked at it closely at a local watch store. There is a variant with a green dial and without the black finish, but it does not say "made in japan". The SRP169 features a black metal bracelet, a bezel with a more useful 0-60 scale and the "made in japan" imprint. Of course that does not mean the watch was entirely made there and the actual watch you get may vary, but I think it is a nice detail. The SRP147 I saw in person did say the japan thing.

The lowest prices I've ever seen for a watch with that movement are $116 and $120. If only the latter came with the bracelet from the first one...

Edit: I forgot the sk007 is a certified diver, you can read more about that here http://monochrome-watches.com/seiko-skx007-family-seiko-beater-divers/

/u/nortbair321 if you find one you like, add it to your wish list and Amazon will let you know when (if) the price drops. If you like something and you're patient you can get a great deal.

Very well made. Band is leather so I don't take it in the water. 5 years later and it still glows. Still works on Ecodrive. No issues.

For watches, I've owned smart watches (pebble and a moto 360) and own many analog watches. I prefer analog to a fitness or smart watch any day of the week if your primary purpose is to have a watch on your wrist (and not an extension of your smart phone).

For watches, I have 3 recommendations, all under $100:

  1. Timex Weekender: This is a cheap, <$40 watch. Nothing too fancy but it's become somewhat of a staple. [Here's a link.](http://www.amazon.com/Timex-T2P4959J-Weekender-Display-Leather/dp/B00LW3RCW8/ref=sr_1_1?
    s=apparel&ie=UTF8&qid=1464118386&sr=1-1&nodeID=6358539011&keywords=timex+weekender)
  1. Seiko SNK809: This is a fantastic automatic watch. I have one on my wrist right now. It's a great intro to automatic watches. Link Here.
  2. MVMT watches. I've read a lot of good things about these. They have a very minimalist design which a lot of people like. Link here.

Watches are extremely personal. The colour of dial, bezel, and strap can be endlessly customized. Gold tones are very popular right now though a black strap/silver or white dial will always be a classic.
Another thing to consider is the size of the bezel. You'll want to pick the right size of watch depending on your wrist size.
u/Scooby-Dooo · 2 pointsr/Watches

Definitely a weekender, looks like this one here

u/NAKED_AND_JAMESON · 2 pointsr/malefashionadvice

So, both of the watches you linked are described as "fashion brand" watches. This means that a popular clothing company has taken a pre-existing quartz movement (usually) then put it into a casing of their choosing and branded it. These watches generally won't break, but they are usually poorer quality than watches made by genuine watch brands at approximately the same price point.

Timex is a good starting point for watches. They look good, hold up well, and generally have very few issues. They're also fairly inexpensive. They typically use quartz movements. Quartz movements use circuit boards and batteries to operate the watch. They're accurate, but the cheapest method for creating a watch.

The second primary method for a operating a watch is automatic movements. These can either be hand-wound by the dial on the side of the watch, or they use a small weight in the watch to automatically (see: name) wind the watch as you move. As your arm moves, the weight spins around and winds up the watch. Automatic watches are more expensive generally, but usually also higher quality.

A good brand for automatic starter watches is Orient. They have a number of offerings in the ~$100-$150 price range that are very very good quality for the money you're paying.

Here are some specific recommendations for watches that are a great bang-for-buck ratio:

  1. Orient Mako II (automatic, $169, "dive watch" style).

  2. Orient Bambino (automatic, $159, "formal" style).
  3. Timex Weekender (quartz, $37, casual)

  4. Seiko 5 Automatic (automatic, $70, "formal" style).

Generally speaking, most watches from Timex, Seiko, and Orient are all great, quality starter watches. I personally own an Orient Mako II in pepsi, which I love. Feel free to PM or check out /r/watches for more information.
u/thebarrytone · 2 pointsr/frugalmalefashion

I would definitely look at Timex or Casio, then. A popular choice is the Timex Weekender, and you can get them with a 1-piece leather strap like this that can be swapped out with a host of other colors and options in seconds. I have and love this watch, but the one criticism is a very, very loud tick. Wait for sales to get it cheaper, and stock up on various bands and enjoy!

I have a timex weekender watch and I'm hoping to get another timepiece that fits the same nato strap that I already have, but with a DATE INDICATOR. I don't know the technical term for this feature and I'm having a devil of a time tracking something like this down? Any help or suggestions appreciated. My strap is approx 2cm/3/4" wide.

but how is this different or better than a Timex?

or a nicer one for $45

u/JewWhore · 2 pointsr/Watches

I'd say buy 2 or 3 for $50 to $100 each. I bought 3 watches (for less than $100 total) before I finally figured out what I like wearing. My first watch was a chronograph on a steel bracelet. I learned very quickly what I do and don't like in chronographs (this one had many features I disliked), and I figured out that, like you, I dislike steel bracelets. I still have that one, but I don't wear it. After that I figured out that I like divers, so I ordered one of those. It turned out I didn't know enough about watches and bought something that didn't fit at all. I figured out where I went wrong, and bought a third watch. It is the one that /u/fragilestories recommended, the Casio mdv106. I wear this watch daily. I think it was nice to have a few and wear each for a while, and doing that let me get the perfect watch. Now that I know what I like, I know that when I spend $200 to $300 on my next watch it will be great. I am planning to upgrade to the Seiko SKX007, which will be my first mechanical watch. I guarantee that I will wear it every day once I have it.

Think about what you want to use your watch for. Will you look at it in class when writing the date on your papers? Get a date window. Want to time things? You need a chronograph. Figure out what features you will use and go from their. Or go for what you think looks the coolest, even if it has different features than you would use.

Also, look through this sub and think about what looks you like. Do you like numbers? Roman numerals? Symbols? What colors do you like? What straps do you like (these are pretty easy to change, but you will have to add straps into your budget if you want something other than what the watch comes with).

Here are 3 watches that will give you a good variety. These 3 will let you rotate watches, change your style, and figure out what features you like and don't like. The three together fit your price point (or are very close).

I love diver's watches, and would start with this: Casio mdv106:
https://smile.amazon.com/Casio-MDV106-1AV-Stainless-Steel-Watch/dp/B009KYJAJY/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1467354240&sr=8-1&keywords=casio+mdv106

I like some chronographs, especially the ones symmetrical across the right and left faces. The Timex weekender is great:
https://smile.amazon.com/Timex-Unisex-TW2P623009J-Weekender-Display/dp/B00QIJ62M2/ref=sr_1_3?s=apparel&ie=UTF8&qid=1467354305&sr=1-3&nodeID=7141123011&keywords=timex+weekender

Maybe you'll find you don't like any complications on your watch (I personally do not like date windows. I think watches look better without them. However, I do use it every day on my watch, so I have a begrudging appreciation for them). Here's another Timex without anything but an hour, minute, and second hand:
https://smile.amazon.com/Timex-Weekender-Fairfield-Quartz-Casual/dp/B0194L6AMC/ref=sr_1_7?s=apparel&ie=UTF8&qid=1467354305&sr=1-7&nodeID=7141123011&keywords=timex+weekender

Tl:dr You won't know what you like until you've worn a few different watches. A $150 budget is enough to buy several watches, so do that and pick a favorite.

u/madogvelkor · 2 pointsr/Watches

Looks good! I think you made the right choice -- I'm wearing a Weekender right now and the tick is audible. Though I'm good at tuning things like that out so I don't notice it.

Though I also have the Weekender Chronograph and the tick is much more quiet.

u/teaserer · 2 pointsr/Watches

Seiko is a good brand and those both look decent for quartz chronographs (although you should probably ask others, since I have no experience with either).

Based on your preferences, maybe check out Timex such as the Weekender Chronograph (which has a blue dial version). I also personally like the Expedition Chronograph and the military style would probably contrast well with a Bambino.

If you're not set on a chronograph check out Seiko 5s, specifically the SNK80x series; they have a few different dial colours and are nice entry-level beaters/casual pieces. I've personally had an SNK809 and it's great for the price (as is the Bambino).

Also, I should probably clarify what I mean when I say the Bambino is dressy. I just mean that it's probably too dressy for realllly casual occasions, it's fine for school, uni, work, etc.

Good luck! :)

u/shinbr · 2 pointsr/Watches
u/BeerNye · 2 pointsr/Watches

From that description, a Timex Weekender or Weekender Chrono wouldn't be a bad choice. I think amazon has a deal on them now too.

*Edit: the strap on these watches are easy to change. Depending on the model, you could get a nice leather strap for it and still come in well under budget.

u/wilarseny · 2 pointsr/Watchexchange

Just a general sense I've gotten here and on /r/watches, but basically they're like these watches but at a 1000% markup. Hi, I'm looking for a good first everyday watch that would be fine in situations such as interviews. My budget is about 200$ (can extend by a bit) and it'd be great if some suggestions are below budget. Some features I'd like:

  • Reasonably waterproof
  • Date(if possible)
  • Will last long for ~5 years

I've gone through the guide and I have two main ideas: Get the Orient Ray II (Blue) or get the Casio MDV106.

    Thanks in advance!

Okay, a heart monitor means a smart watch, which isn’t really the thrust of this subreddit, but you might get some suggestions. Not from me though :-)

If you want something more watchy, I suspect a dress watch will be too delicate for you, as you’re young and want to dress it down too. So you want something more versatile. A diver might be good as it’ll dress up or dress down, looks good with a suit, in jeans, or on the beach.

The Orient Ray II is an attractive, well made diver with a good movement that might work for you.

If you do want something more traditionally dressy, Orient Bambinos are great, but they’re not tough. Check out the buying guide for more $0-250 suggestions.:-

Really not a fan of Hamilton. I'm not sure Why, they just don't seem to have that same elegance as most Swiss watches. Maybe it's the American influence.

The skx is a hugely iconic watch that is about as versatile as you Can get. Obviously it isn't a "luxury" brand though, which may have some influence on your decision.

A few more you might want to look at are:

Orient blue Ray 2 (which I own and absolutely love, it's my daily beater and is perfect for me. Can't fault it.)

Christopher Ward's Trident (I have this one as well but it's still sitting in the box a month later so I can't really give you my opinion on it)

Longines hydroconquest(doesn't have a ceramic bezel when most other watches at that price point do)

Tissot seasomething powermatic 1000.

[Mod] So I really want a Mako II with the seconds hand from the Ray II, the bezel from a SKX007K and enclosed with sapphire glass.

Where do I begin? What's a good watch modding form to buy/trade parts from?

I haven't looked at the sizes of the cases to see if I could potentially drop the movement from the Mako II into the case of an SKX007 after swapping the seconds hand from the Ray II.

I wish the SK007 hacked and had a lume pip on the indicator instead of the counter weight. Like the SKX013 does.

The SNZH55 would be perfect with a hacking movement and a bezel with more graduations.

Edit: I guess at the end of the day "saving" up for a Prospex SRPB51 would probably be easier and probably cost less in the long run but I still prefer the hour/minute hands from the Mako, and the seconds hand from the Ray.

Edit 2: This photoshopped watch is basically my "perfect" dive watch except with this bezel I just didn't want to do more photoshopping than necessary and the SEIKO SAMURAI bezel insert already lined up with the other watches.

Watches like Seiko's SKX007, SKX013 or SNZH57 are much better quality watches, and would be great for you because they have a very healthy modding community. You can buy all of the bezel inserts you want to use with a SXK007/SNZH57/SKX013 and swap them yourself. You can even change everything to make it look just like a blancpain fifty fathoms.

Not exactly small, but this seems to fit the bill, otherwise there's this you can get a strap for it with the money left over. I tried to find a diver's watch because it seems to be what you were looking for. I don't recommend invictica normally, I'm fairly weary of them but your budget is fairly tight but you can check this, out be cautious and do you homework when dealing with invictica. There's also this and that. You may also want to consider this.

EDIT: Added options

u/JoCoLaRedux · 1 pointr/Watches

They may not be as preferred here as many other brands since they're not automatics, but I think everyone respects Casio, and has probably owned one at some point. You'd be hard-pressed to find a watch company that packs as much value and as many features into a quartz watch as Casio does, and their Edifice line excels at doing that while looking attractive to boot.

To me, they represent the democratization of watches more so than any company, even Timex. Not everyone can afford a Rolex or Hamilton, but anyone with ten bucks to spare (Heck, you can pick up a dive watch for $16) can afford a good, reliable Casio.

u/djshiva · 1 pointr/EDC

I have this little thing that I bought for about $15 at the time just to have an analog watch that also had 24 hr time on it. I thought I would have it for a few months. I have now had it for a few years and it has outlasted several much more expensive watches.

Hey im considering purchasing a chronograph watch ( my first Chrono) and Im looking for some recommendations. I have had my eye on the:
Seiko SSB031 https://www.amazon.ca/Seiko-Mens-SSB031-Chronograph-Watch/dp/B007554XQU
And the :
Seiko SND 367 http://www.creationwatches.com/products/seiko-chronograph-watches-63/seiko-chronograph-snd367p1-snd367-snd367p-mens-watch-2417.html
I really like the SSB031 since it's a mechaquartz but Im wondering if there are any similar looking mechaquartz watches at a similar price ? Budget is sub 300, thanks !

u/Killsranq · 1 pointr/Watches

Hey! So I've been lurking around here for a while, not sure what the fuss was about but after a bit of review videos, going through top>all, I think I'm starting to catch the hype about watches, and kinda wanna dip my feet in to start off.

I did my research and was going to pull the trigger on a Seiko 5, but thought about chronograph watches for a second. While I do enjoy the look of a chronograph, I also have use for them as a result of a couple of my hobbies, but realistically its more of a want than a need.

This subreddit seemed really enthusiastic (I wonder why) about watches, so, I figured it'd be best to ask here for opinions and go through my options for a chronograph before I pull the trigger on the Seiko.

A couple of chronographs that I've found and liked so far:

The Seiko chronograph, sndd87

Not usually a fan of Timex but this one caught my eye: Timex Men's T2P380 Stainless Steel Watch with Leather Band https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00HYUSIXK/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_bX1OybPPVHCHZ

Seiko ssb031: Seiko SSB031 Men's Chronograph Stainless Steel Case Watch https://www.amazon.com/dp/B007554XQU/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_SV1OybPJEQN4C

My budget is really around $50-$150, and I'm open to used options as well. (Is buying/selling low end pieces a thing in the watch world?). I'd really appreciate any input you guys can give.

Last note, I'd rather just get the Seiko 5 if any other option is a bad quality chronograph that's mainly designed for looks. I'd want for it to work properly, but I'm kind of expecting my budget to not be in the proper range for that.

Thank you!

https://www.amazon.com/Seiko-SSB031-Chronograph-Stainless-Steel/dp/B007554XQU ~142 ish looks similar enough, I have the SSB033 myself and I like it a lot.

Looking for a watch similar to the Fossil Decker chronograph, or the Casio Edifice. I'm looking at a watch for flying but general usage day to day as well. I like the look of a tachymeter (the overall busy look) and a big face. I do have really small wrists but I prefer the look of a 44mm watch over a 42mm.

Quartz movement, Chronograph are the requirements. Preferably under $CAD 200.

I love the look of the Seiko SSB031 link but it's too small at 40mm. I like to have a larger dial so I can see it easier, and it's helpful to have a visible second hand, can be pretty useful during instrument flying.

u/Lord_Fabio · 1 pointr/Watches

I'm looking to get an affordable, entry level chronograph and have narrowed down my choices to the Seiko SNDC81 and the Seiko SSB031. Both fill the same niche for me as being a semi-daily wear in a very casual, business casual environment. The SNDC81 has a really simple and retro look and I love the look of the textured crown. The SSB031 has a sportier look with the red accents and I find the mecha-quartz movement to be an extremely cool feature. Could anyone way in and help me decide?

u/kedvaledrummer · 1 pointr/Watches

Hey guys, I'm looking to pick up a new beater watch and I'm thinking of getting my first chronograph. A "grab and go" quartz chronograph makes the most sense for my job, as I can't really afford to baby my watches in the field.

Right now I'm considering:

Seiko SND253

Seiko SSB031

or I might go more unique with a Heitis Chronograph

Right now I'm leaning towards one of the Seikos as the Heitis might be a little big for my wrist. What do you guys think?

u/daringescape · 1 pointr/Watches

I own this watch and LOVE it. It is solar powered, and quartz if that matters to you, but it is a fantastic watch. I wore it swimming and snorkeling in Hawaii for 2 weeks last year and it has survived multiple trips to the water park and lots of swimming as well as everyday use.

u/ChronicMasterBaker · 1 pointr/Watches

Jesus, I should have waited a couple weeks to get mine because I'm really digging the Alpha Marine, the GSAR, and the Seastar.

I ended up getting the SSC017 and BN0000-04H.

u/MOX-News · 1 pointr/Watches

Not all of them, it seems. This one has a 24 hour dial, but reviews say that it's locked to the 12 hour hand and can't be used for a second time zone or as part of the chronograph. To me that's a damn shame because it's gorgeous, but I can't stand redundant features like that.

u/Zippy129 · 1 pointr/Watches

Tell me about it, holy shit. Just 2 months ago I remember staring at my Jacques Lemans chronograph that I received as a graduation gift and wondering if there was a large subreddit devoted to watches. Boy, was that a mistake. Pair that with my new internship that I started last week? Let's just say I'm still decently broke despite my shiny new job.

I started 2015 with a stunning Rotary auto, Seiko 5, Orient Esteem, and an Armani Exchange chronograph (a gift from my ex). My friends also bought me a watch box for my birthday so now I will be collecting even more vigorously.

I have decided to start saving money and budgeting, so I will be mainly focused on straps and working with what I have, but my next two purchases are already planned out: this Seiko will be purchased as my first dive watch, and then I will be saving up for a second hand Rolex Datejust 1603.

One of my personal favourite watches, and a bit of a darling of this subreddit, Edifice EF503D-7AV. (Amazon may not be the cheapest around, I'm only linking it for reference.)

u/nauticalmile · 1 pointr/Watches

I got a Casio Edifice EF-503D-7AVDF a few months ago and have been quite happy with it. The original bracelet it came with was quite cheap, but I think the Panatime KVLR or more recently the Crown & Buckle Rallye straps I've been wearing it on make for a nice combo.

u/Aweswin · 1 pointr/Watches

I don't know how much affordable you are looking for, but if you're in the sub $100 and you like the white face with black dial speedmastery look, this casio edifice is alright. I replaced the bracelet with a black leather band and I use it as a beater. Haven't had any problems with it yet, and it's cheap enough to be disposable.

u/AF4Q · 1 pointr/Watches

So i havent purchased that watch yet since I was looking at more options. Just stumbled across this: http://www.amazon.com/Casio-General-Watches-Chronograph-EF-503D-7AVDF/dp/B007V317E2

u/Schrockwell · 1 pointr/Watches

Within that price range, you can consider an Eco-Drive with a little more style or features. For example, a chronograph or a second time zone and a bezel that's a slide rule, or something that just looks like a pilot watch.

u/Touche_good_sir · 1 pointr/frugalmalefashion

Yea bc of budget reasons that is what I'm leaning towards. The other I have in mind is this Citizen but I'd have to wait for a good sale to still fit the other items in the budget.

But front runner would be the Seiko 5 with new strap , like you said for versatility. Id like everyone to be able to wear it beyond the wedding if they want.

u/Nothingcreativeatm · 1 pointr/Watches

A citizen eco drive isn't an automatic, but well regarded around here, and they have a bunch of options for your desired level of formality.

edit: or this one that actually has the black dial.
edit 2: I like this one best.

that bulova is great but its quartz, if you don't mind a quartz watch it opens up a WHOLE slew of different options under 200$. If I was buying a simliar styled watch under 200$ and didn't mind quartz I would probably look at Citizen Eco-Drive watches, the quality is usually outstanding and the solar feature is fun and very useful.

u/mynameistheodb · 1 pointr/funhaus

Yeah, the Weekender is the one I ended up getting. I really like it, it fulfills the two tasks I require of a watch: 1) telling time and 2) not looking terrible. It's cheap enough (not $15 like I originally said, I paid $35) that you don't really even need to get it repaired, you could just buy another one. If it has sentimental value for you though, you do you.

u/INmySTRATEjaket · 1 pointr/nfl

A cheap, reliable, do it all watch is timex. The straps are easily replaceable so you can buy straps to customize a little too. R/watches hails rolex, timex and seiko as the ideal 3 brands. Timex being the cheapest, rolex being the most expensive obviously.

Edit: This is the particular watch I'm talking about.

Timex Unisex T2P495 Weekender Oversize Brown Leather Slip-Thru Strap Watch https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00LW3RCW8/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_RcVwzbZB3F0Y2

It's reliable, light, easy to read, crazy comfortable and keeps time better than almost anything else i own and it's cheap. Plus the leather strap matches everything.

I work in a pizza place and the cornmeal has destroyed far "nicer" watches in short time. This thing has lasted through daily use for a year now though.

u/Target359 · 1 pointr/puns

If you can afford it, buy some decent wrist watches and display them in a modified red igloo container with pretty lining with a note that says "Thanks for watching after me."

I like this watch design, but that's my personal opinion.

This TIMEX is pretty damn close to the Runwell Chrono.

I've compared them side by side and, save for the much nicer leather strap and the slightly better finishing, the Shinola is not worth almost $750 more.

The Waterbury that u/Finchios recommended is even closer.

u/BFNentwick · 1 pointr/Watches

That's totally fair. I use the chrono every day when I read and time audio ad scripts my company produces, so for me it was kind of a blessing in the end.

As said below, they do look cool as well.

It won't be easy finding a chronograph that's under 40mm. You can search "seiko chronograph" on amazon for example and you will get plenty of results that look like the one you like but none of them are 37 or 38mm.

I found one that's 39mm but it's not all black like the one you posted: http://www.amazon.com/Seiko-SNA695-Alarm-Chronograph-Silver-Tone/dp/B001BMFBX2/ref=swr_wa_2_ses

This would be my first "real" watch and was wondering if anyone had any experience with this watch. Also why is it $140 cheaper on Amazon vs Citizen's website?

u/antifolkhero · 1 pointr/Watches

Is movement accuracy generally described by using the seconds per day gained or lost, as you wrote in your post? If not, how can I tell the quality of movement on any particular watch? For instance, I was looking at this Citizen Men's BL5250-02L Eco-Drive Perpetual Calendar Chronograph Watch, which lists the movement as Japanese quartz. It seems that Japan and Switzerland have the best quartz movements, but do you think it's worth it to a Swiss ETA? Also, how can I tell the +/- accuracy simply by looking at a description on a website?

u/ocdcdo · 1 pointr/Watches

This is very similar and I believe may be a better watch overall. It's a bit more expensive at $240, but you don't have to worry about changing out batteries if the other is Quartz:

http://www.amazon.com/Citizen-BL5250-02L-Eco-Drive-Perpetual-Chronograph/dp/B000EQS0WK/ref=sr_1_3?s=watches&ie=UTF8&qid=1339180173&sr=1-3

u/Mowjowey · 1 pointr/Watches

For a quartz chronograph, I personally like the Tissot PR100 and the Citizen Eco-Drive BL5250-02L.

As you may know, true automatic chronographs can be a little pricey ($500+) so it may be more difficult to find them based on your price point. Nevertheless, my favourite black-faced automatic watch (roughly) in your price point is definitely the Hamilton Khaki Field.

Hope you find what you're looking for!

u/RocketTech99 · 1 pointr/Watches

Hello all; thanks for doing this. I'm looking for a watch, around $500 which is durable and tasteful. I need a rotating bezel, perpetual calendar (if it has date complications) and luminous hands. I have a large wrist so large watches are preferred and not an issue. I prefer metal bracelets, so if it doesn't come with one, it would need to be able to take one (any recommendations for a bracelet would be appreciate as well).

I currently have this Citizen Eco-Drive 43 mm case watch and really like it. Quality, reliability, ability to take a knock, and looks are most important. Complications are always nice, but not required. Dual Time zone would be handy (L-TM on Citizen).

Thanks again, and Happy Thanksgiving.

u/ZestySushi · 1 pointr/Watches

I'm not a fan of the Hamilton's muted bezel, but I like the dial the best. Hamilton has two other versions of the Khaki that have better looking bezels, this and this.

As far as the other two goes, I like the SKX013 slightly better. I'm a fan of the dots as opposed to the typical lines you'd see in most watches.

u/skyflyer8 · 1 pointr/CasualConversation

Hmm... That i started with? I had a seiko pilot chronograph once that i considered keeping, but it was too large on my wrist. I've also had some retro seikos that i like. I currently have a vintage Hamilton Quartz that i'm not even sure if i want to sell. I probably will because i saving up for the Seiko SRP311 and the Hamilton Khaki Field Auto.

Through trades i have gotten a Citizen eco drive calibre 8651, which i've since sold, and a Hamilton GG-W-113 USAF pilot watch, which i'm planning on keeping forever, or atleast until i have someone to pass it on to.

u/myemailiscool · 1 pointr/Watches

u/drinkallthecoffee · 1 pointr/funny

lol. it's funny, now that i have a nice watch i can tell how nice someone else's watch is by the crystal alone. i'm not a snob (i like a good timex), but the only thing that looks nice from afar is a sapphire crystal.

u/StrangeRover · 1 pointr/malefashionadvice

Warning: opinionated rant follows:

A Hamilton Khaki Field Automatic may suit you well if you like simplicity. They can be had around $350 and in my personal opinion, along with the rest of the Khaki series, are the only watches worth buying between $150 and $3000.

That price range is just so chock full of watches with sub-par movements. Many are quartz, which is awesome for low end watches, but not worth much over $100. The only quartz watch I would ever pay over $100 for is a Bulova Accutron, but that's only because all the early NASA space capsules (and most of the earliest astronauts) carried Accutrons. Other than that, that price range is an endless ocean of Submariner and Speedmaster "homages" that come from brands with no heritage and they're boring, boring, boring. Sure, they may look okay and keep great time, but you can get those features for well under $100.

For the record, I wear a cheap Seiko 5 Automatic. I won't spend over $150 on a watch until I can afford a SS GMT Master.

>I really have no idea about shoes... I'm not sure on what types there are.

The sidebar shoe guide provides a great overview of different types of shoes. It's a better answer to your question that anyone will provide here.

If you'd prefer an arbitrary suggestion that matches your specifications, try the Clarks Desert Boot in Beeswax, available for under $80 on Amazon. They run quite large, so you should probably order size 12.

u/ace_blazer · 1 pointr/malefashionadvice

So I'm in Canada and the actual Amazon.com export seller is selling Clark's DB's for a tiny sale at $120. There is also the current 20% off boots Amazon promo. It comes down to $101 USD. Add shipping to Canada and import fees and it comes out to $121 USD. Do the currency conversion and fees from my MasterCard and it's ~$140 CAD. As a comparison CBDs go for $160 CAD before taxes in retail stores & online up here in Canada ($180+ CAD).

OK deal? Will there be bigger deals over the weekend or is this the best we'll probably get for a long time? Unfortunately I won't be going to the US myself anytime soon otherwise I would just buy them down there.

I bought some Clarks for every day wear. I'm not sure how they are supposed to fit. They sort of slice my toes everytime i bend, they rub on my achilles tendon area and i get blister, and my heel moves up and down inside the boot. I should note that they feel sort of tight overall, but wouldn't my heel move more if
I went up in size? I don't know which of these problems if from them being not broken in and which is from other things. This is extra worrysome because a while ago I bought some hiking boots that just shred my achilles tendon area. Am I just not supposed to wear boots?

u/rainymondays · 1 pointr/malefashionadvice

I managed to get them at $70 from Amazon, but I think I got pretty luck if you take a look at camel^3. I'd pull the trigger at that price though because who knows how long you'll have to wait. They're wonderful shoes and paying +-$10 is worth it.

Just wanted to add my humble advice on the jean stains. I had horrible ones from dark jeans on my tan leather. Using Lexol Leather Cleaner and a Kiwi Horse Hair Brush with a tiny bit of water completely removed the stains for me. I follow up with Lexol Leather Conditioner.

u/googs185 · 1 pointr/frugalmalefashion

Thanis I'll grab a Kiwi. Do I need the polish dauber brush too *has a handle with round section of horsehair for applying polish), or just the long brush?

u/sanjeevmishra94 · 1 pointr/malefashionadvice

So should I use mink oil, or not? Is it for something completely different?

So far, it looks like I'm getting this, this, and this. Should I get a shoe conditioner like this, too?

u/ProfessorPickaxe · 1 pointr/internetparents

Prep your boots:

Knock back the finish a bit with some diluted dish soap and a scrub brush. Set them aside to dry.

Apply some Sno-Seal liberally with rag or brush. Allow to set. For the first coat, I like to hit it with a hairdryer to let it get into the leather's pores and all the nooks and crannies where boot meets sole.

Apply a second coat of Sno-Seal and wipe off the excess with a rag.

Now get an applicator brush, a polish brush and a wax matching the color of your boots. Kiwi is a good brand, I've been using it for years.

Swirl your applicator brush around in the tin of wax and then apply it to your boots in a vigorous circular pattern. Pay attention to the areas around the crevices (such as in the instep). Let it set for a few minutes and then brush it down with the polishing brush in a vigorous back-and forth motion. Do NOT rub hard with the polishing brush - you're trying to bring it to a shine / gloss, not rub it off.

With the base coat of Sno-Seal and a good layer of wax over it you should be good for all winter. Wipe off any dirt / snow / mud before storing them in the spring, then repeat the process above in the fall.

EDIT

For anyone following along, I reconditioned my 16-year old Vasque Sundowner boots this morning as they needed it. Questions welcomed.

Pro Tip: Invest in a Horse Hair Brush. I use it on my Raptor 7's and it cleans the nubuck on it like magic. Made the the upper look practically brand new.

Something like this would be fine.

Polish on a work boot mainly boils down to aesthetics. A lot of Japanese dudes seem to do a glossy mirror shine on their redwings.

u/Fubs261 · 1 pointr/goodyearwelt

I've been lurking for a while but finally made an account to ask this:

I decided to go with Red Wing Beckmans (9023) as my first high-quality footwear purchase. I also purchased a Kiwi 100% Horsehair Shine Brush, a Lexol 907 Leather Care Kit, and Woodlore Adjustable Men's Shoe Tree (Cedar).

My first question is: how should the shoe trees fit into my Beckmans? I went to a Red Wing store and got sized. They said I have wide feet and recommended I get 8.5 (I usually wear 8.5s in regular footwear like Van's and Nike). I purchased the 8.5 Beckmans and I've worn them about 8 times now. Out of paranoia, I double checked with the Red Wing store to see if the boots were creasing properly (as I have a lot of toe space and was worried that it might be too big). They assured me that It was fine. I ordered size medium (8-9.5 size) and They arrived yesterday. I inserted them into the boots but noticed that it was pretty difficult to get them in there and the heel of the shoe tree scratches against the heel of the boot when inserting. I notice if I wiggle the front of the shoe trees in a bit more before inserting the heel, it doesn't scratch the heel of the boot. I apologize if the picture quality is poor , I only have my phone at this time. Is this okay for my Beckmans? Or should I return these for a different shoe trees? I'm worried about them being stretched improperly. If I should get different ones, can someone direct me to a specific shoe tree? Here are some pictures of my 9023s with the shoe trees.

My second question is, do I need any other care products than the ones I listed above? My care regime currently will be to brush after each use, shoe trees for a minimum of 1 day before next wear, Lexol clean and condition once a month and/or after they get really dirty.

I had a really hard time accessing the spring bars through the end links on my SM300. I eventually acquired a fine-tipped spring bar tool and now it's not so hard.

u/reezyrice · 1 pointr/Watches

No worries, I still struggle to take straps off too. When you wrote "watch link remover", do you mean a spring bar tool?

I recommend Bergeon. They are like the gold standard for watch tools.

EDIT: Blurry photo, but you can see the difference in quality after roughly the same amount of use (1 year for the affordable, made-in-china tool on the left, 1 year for the Bergeon on the right).

u/novaol · 1 pointr/Watches

I bought my own tool from Amazon and it has been my saviour on many occasion like helping friends to change straps and bracelets etc. Its very cheap and worth the while to get one for yourself. Cheers

u/pauliwogg · 1 pointr/Watches

As soon as I opened the box and saw the watch in person, I immediately bought a new strap from WatchGecko. It's one of their cheaper vintage straps but I love it. The company is in England so shipping to California took a couple weeks. If you're thinking about changing the strap on your Bambino, I would recommend getting a good quality spring bar tool like the one I bought off Amazon.

u/slothcough · 1 pointr/MakeupAddiction

Bandaids work! You could also try these! A friend of mine has smaller boobs and she wears these instead of a bra most days and says it's crazy comfortable.

u/praxiis · 1 pointr/TwoXChromosomes

Same here. I'm a 34B, and after testing the waters for a month I found them too uncomfortable to go back. I have never gotten a negative comment about it. Guys I date seem to be either indifferent or appreciative.

I wear Nippies Skin under see-through shirts or when I'm really concerned about nipple showage (e.g. during a job interview). I don't like it when my nipples get hard, but it rarely happens and I'm slowly training myself to give no fucks.

Thorogood American Heritage: plain toe or moc toe? Pros and cons, versatility, etc.? I'm looking for a casual boot. I feel like the plain toe has a "work boot" feel to it and I like the "character" that the moc toe brings, but I'd like to have other people's opinion. Here's some pics I found:

u/Cold_Fusion · 1 pointr/malefashionadvice

I got these Thorogood boots last year and I've really enjoyed them. I also made a post and put up an album when I first went through and put mink oil on them.

If you'd like, I can throw up a picture of them after a year of pretty heavy wear. I've really enjoyed having them and they're great "beginner" boots.

u/yanzerg · 1 pointr/BuyItForLife

Is there a huge difference between those and these? Both of them are leather and welted and both weigh about 30 ounces.

u/Lager_Fixed · 1 pointr/malefashionadvice

If you're considering Red Wings, check out Thorogood boots. I have a pair of these and I think they're great. American made, Vibram sole, high quality leather, equal build quality to Red Wings at a considerably lower price.

u/clamskittles · 1 pointr/goodyearwelt

I got these Danner Mountain 600s for my birthday. After I got them I decided I would destroy the finish very quickly, they are sued instead of smooth leather and they are just a little too "sporty" for me.

I am used to being able to abuse my Charcoal Iron Rangers and then easily clean/oil them and they look brand new. That being said...I need some brown boots, a not another pair of IRs. I will be using the credit from the Danner Boots that I'm returning ($140) and I'm willing to spend another $60-100 to get something better.

I'm thinking either Danner Bull Run Moc Toes , Thorogood Moc Toes, or stretching the budget and getting some Red Wing Moc Toes.

Is there a substantial drop in quality going from the $250 Red wings to the $175 Danner to the $160 Thorogoods? I will probably still wear my IRs more, but these will get a lot of use.

Any other suggestions in that range (on amazon ~$150-250)??

Thanks!

u/shark260 · 1 pointr/malefashionadvice

Yeah, CDB if you don't have them already. If you like mocs a lot, I have these and they break in great. Otherwise without going up to redwing a more winter boot would be this, this or this.

u/rlyon3 · 1 pointr/malefashionadvice

Personally, I'm a big fan of Thorogood boots. They're nice looking boots that won't break the bank.

u/Veticz · 1 pointr/malefashionadvice

u/ShaShaBooey · 1 pointr/malefashionadvice

u/All_the_rage · 1 pointr/malefashionadvice

I would go with either these Thorogood Moc Toes or these Round Toes. They are well within your budget, look great, and will hold up well.

u/chimichangaXL · 1 pointr/malefashionadvice

The only thing close with a similar look and 22 band size is this one. $67 dollars after the 20% coupon, which is about how much I ended up paying for the seiko 5, band, and spring bar kit.

Or you could go with this large easy reader for one on the cheap.

However if you have a little more to spend and you don't care for movement, this watch is probably one the best quality/nicest looking ones quartz watch is this one in my opinion. However once you're around the $100 range there are tons of options. /r/watches is a good resource.

u/Zualgo · 1 pointr/Watches

Ooh, that brown 7T92 is nice. Found a similar Seiko on Amazon.

u/ImScully · 1 pointr/malefashionadvice

You could find better for the price. After all, it is only quartz, which you can easily find around $60-70 for some reputable watches with a (to me) much more appealing face. The minimalistic approach looks sloppy on this watch. If you are a fan of chronographs, I recommend this.

u/Borealis116 · 1 pointr/Watches

Obvious dust on dial and other obvious cosmetic defects that could have and should have been caught by a decent QA process is a huge red flag to me. Bought an Orient Mako USA II and there was a huge red paint spill on the second hand and it made it out into the field just like that, as if no one raised their hands during the assembly and go "hey this second hand is pretty messed up". I got my refund but I would be lying if my respect for the brand hasn't been negatively affected since. Also cropped arabic numerals or indices to make room for sub dial is another pet peeve of mine; this eliminate alot of chronograph options for me. Example

i did some more lookingI looked some more and found this, the Orient Esteem. The styling is very nice, although i can't say it's the exact font i would choose. It's on the dressy side but i think the right band would make it work, and i tend to wear nicer clothing. But the simple styling is nice, the window is why i like it, a skeleton is too much, the peak just sucks you in (although the plate covering a good portion is annoying). I haven't been looking at mechanicals much but i know it would need to be worn every other day at least to keep it running, and isn't it necessary to be more careful with them (try to to hit my wrist on something hard for whatever reason)? This is way over what i originally said, but there's 30% off, so it's 120. I doubt i'll get it for that, but the price just changed to that and hopefully it will go back down as it was 130 until 4:30 yesterday according to camelcamelcamel, which discounts to 90.
Other than that the only thing i found was the Seiko snn241 which is a little higher than i wanted to pay, especially compared to the orient.

Hello everyone! I would like to get the community's recommendation for a classic steel case, white dial, brown leather strap dress watch and a diver's watch. My current collection of watches include - Seiko SNN241, Seiko SNA695, Seiko Kinetic SKA553, Casio G-Shock Rangeman GW-9400-1CR and a Timex Weekender Fairfield.
I am looking for a classic brown leather strap white dial dress watch. I looked around and finally deicded on this Orient Bambino Version 2, but it is not available anywhere! Out of stock at all retailers. What would you recommend in this style which can be an alternative to the Bambino V2 which is in the price range $200-$250? I am also looking for a Diver's watch in the $150 to $250 range. The choices in this category are quite a lot - Seiko SKX Collection, Seiko Monster SRP Collection, the Orient Ray, Ray II, Mako, Mako USA II. It's overwhelming. With the Diver's watch I would like your recommendation specific to quality and technology of the watch. This way I will be able to prioritize my choice based on quality first and then the aesthetics. Thank you!

u/HSoup · 0 pointsr/Watches

I was just looking at Citizen's at Amazon and some are almost 50% off (though I do have prime, I don't know if that's a factor).

For example, I'm looking at this one.

You could wear nipple covers, since in the US cops mostly care about the nip being exposed.

They are also known as pasties, they are silicone, self-adhesive and brand new they are pretty damn sticky. Prices range on amazon from 8-15 bux for a single pair. I bought these and they stayed on for 12 hours without any inclination of a hint that they might unstick themselves.

u/spyder91 · 0 pointsr/frugalmalefashion

The Thorogood is 20% off on Amazon with coupon code SPSHOE14. For a size 10.5 that's only $128, and you have it in 2-days with Prime.

And the 6-inch is even cheaper (obviously).

Recently bought a Timex Weekender off of amazon for $44. Not exactly my cup of tea, and didn't buy it recently enough to be return it. I've worn it 2 times and there's nothing wrong with it. The face appears off white in this picture because of the lighting, it's actually white. Comes with the standard brown genuine leather strap. $35 shipped, no paypal fees if you go friends and family.

u/long218 · -1 pointsr/Watches

SKX and OBR are robust and sporty. Don't wear them with oxford unless you want to make a contrast. I only ever wear my Orient Black Raven when I wear t-shirt or when it is raining.

Smaller, less robust watches pairing with leather straps will give you a nice formal look. I have the Timex Easy Reader and Casio Edifice
