Sounds weird, but camelcamelcamel can give you Amazon's historical prices for a product... looking for a good price for a GoPro?

That's why I'm getting a 3rd camera. Something like this to record any possible cop interactions. Front/rear/360 dash I can easily move, start recording on your phone and put it anywhere if for no other reason than audio.

Ridiculous the measures we have to protect ourselves from.

Dashcams, put a 64gb card in it and it can record for about 32 hours non-stop.

Have a 4TB G-Drive back-up harddrive, dump all of the footage at the end of every 24 hour cycle.

Get a lapel camera: http://www.amazon.com/Veho-Muvi-Pro-Micro-Camcorder/dp/B0037P5CAI/ref=pd_sim_sbs_e_3

Attach it to your shirt, keep the batteries fresh, make sure the internal clock is accurate. Activate it every hour for at least 5 minutes to give updates of what you're doing. The second model can record up to 24 hours with a 16gb msd card, they also have voice activated modes.

Also finally, install a GPS phone tracker onto your own phone, and keep track of where you're going and when with timestamps.

There are also some voice operated audio and video recording apps out there for both Android and iOS that can stream to external storage.

Dump all of these to a drive, one folder for your car, one for your person, and one for your phone data.

Along with testimony of friends and family, and surveillance cameras at wherever you're going, it would be hard to argue that you did something that wasn't picked up by any of these devices.

If you get a 4TB model, you should be able to store a little over two months worth of data on you, at the end of two months, I would clear out the oldest week, so you have a continuous 2 month backlog of your personal activity.

Also, make sure what the laws in your country or state are, and potentially contact local authorities, explain to them you're worried about your safety and you simply want to keep a record of yourself and your surroundings.

There are also home-security cameras that you can also have streaming to a similar drive. So you'll have an almost complete record of yourself, and your personal surroundings.

Thank you. Pulled straight off my Sony HDRAS100 Action Cam. I put some compression on the audio so it was headphone friendly but I did nothing to the image. I've been very impressed with both the image sabilization and the image quality in general.

Since first party weapon mounts for the GoPro are ridiculously expensive we decided to take matters into our own hands, this one cost about $5 to make.

We took one of the flat adhesive mounts drilled a couple holes into it, which lined up with the holes on a cheap scope ring mount, then used one of the 90 degree clamps to get the camera oriented down the barrel. It seems a little tall, but we've come to realize that the height is actually perfect for getting the barrel in frame - mounting closer to the rail made the weapon take up too much of the frame (with the rifles, anyway) I'll see about posting some video / pictures from the gopro later.

I know, it's not pretty - but it works great.

u/averynicehat · 5 pointsr/videography

If your camera is going to be situated near the audio board, you can just run an audio cable from the board to the camera (assuming it has an audio input). Something like a Canon VIXIA HF G20 is a decent choice. If that is too much, start moving down to the cheaper VIXIAs.

If the camera is positioned away from the mixer, then I'd get a small audio recorder like a Zoom H1 ($99) and plug that into the mixer. Or a smartphone should be able to record audio from a line in. When editing you would have to sync up the audio recording to the video, and mute the video's audio. It's not too tough.

A friend is a professional photographer, and she recommends Sony for the action camera market. GoPro makes a solid product of course, but she contends it's mostly a matter of marketing like Beats headphones - which are good headphones but at their price point you can get a better product for cheaper.

The Sony Action Cam AS100V is on my to-buy list.

u/jam6618 · 5 pointsr/videography

For starters, I'd be glad to help you find the right camcorder!

Here is an option:

  1. Camera: Panasonic HC-V770K Full HD Camcorder - A fantastic camcorder for the price, just about the cheapest still with good features. It is pushing the budget a bit but i think it would be worth it. 5-axis image stabilization, 1080p with slow-mo, wide aperture for low light, timelapse mode, and more.

  2. Shotgun Mic: Rode VideoMic GO Lightweight On-Camera Microphone - A good small shotgun mic that does not require a battery (uses very little power from the camera).

  3. SD Card: SanDisk 32GB Ultra Memory Card - 2 32GB memory cards should get you plenty of record time and allow you to off-load the footage from one card while being able to use the 2nd card.

  4. Camera Bag: Ruggard Commando 25 Shoulder Bag - A great little camera bag that should fit everything you need in it. If you think it is too small, just step up to it's bigger brother the Commando 36.

  5. LED Light: Genaray LED-2100 36 LED Compact On-Camera Light - A great little on-camera LED light to add more light if you think that is going to be an issue. It can totally be removed if you need to cut down the budget and you dont think you will need it. (a smartphone light would work in a pinch if you rarely need extra light)

  6. Extra Battery: Panasonic Lithium-Ion Camcorder Battery Pack (3.6V, 1940mAh) - This is another battery of the same size as the included one. According to product specialists, it will get you ~1.5 hrs per battery. If you need to cut down on the budget, I would recommend cutting the extra battery and using the included AC adapter more often or using a USB battery pack to power the camera.

For attaching the mic, slide the included detachable cold shoe mount into the slot at the rear of the camera until it clicks, slide the mic into the cold shoe and tighten the knob to secure it in place. For attaching the LED light, screw the bar into the bottom of the camera and attach the LED light to the bar similar to attaching the mic.

If you have any other questions, do not hesitate to ask. I hope this helps!

Here's what he's really offering you after you sift out all of his BS copypasta and MSRP prices.

  • Hero2: Outdoor Edition (all of the adhesive mounts, skeletons doors, etc. that he says are additional are actually just the standard kit for this pack) ALSO NOTE: Unless I'm overlooking it, he's keeping the vented helmet mount and the head-strap mount for himself. THIS IS A RIP OFF. You can get this FULL kit on Amazon for $240.
  • Gen 1 Wifi Bacpac and remote kit (This is $79 straight from GoPro, free shipping, not $99)
  • Gen 1 LCD Bacpac (again, this is only $69 straight from GoPro)
  • 32GB Memory card (doesn't say what kind... but most of us use the $25 Class 10 Sandisk, which works with both the Hero2 and Hero3 cams. No need to spend "$58")

Ultimately, you could buy this all brand-spanking-new for ~$413.

BUT, he's taking TWO mounts for himself that would cost you $30 to replace, he's not including the card, and his camera has been used.

I've seen Hero2's for as low as $150 on Craigslist, and see them COMMONLY for $200 with a few accessories.

My opinion is that this is a bad deal. I would not take it.

EDIT: I just checked my local craigslist. There are 2 for sale, one is camera and case only (no accessories or card) for $170, and the other is for the camera, case, and a few mounts for $175. Your deal is bad... UNLESS you want EXACTLY those accessories.

For starters, OP has to play a game I like to call "GoPro Russian Roulette". You see, like half of the new GoPros are pieces of shit that have poor QC. They've turned into the Hi-Point of action cameras.

Might want to look at some digital camcorders. The 1080p handycam style ones are fairly cheap now though you might lose the hand controlled zoom. Most of them have flip screens.

Something like this:
https://www.amazon.com/Sony-Recording-HDRCX405-Handycam-Camcorder/dp/B00R5LH9HO

u/provideocreator · 4 pointsr/videography

There are two options you could go with:

  1. Use any modern smartphone. They're usually capable of 1080p video, and some newer ones can even do 4k. This isn't always the most convenient option for some people though.

  2. Get an inexpensive camcorder. The cheapest you'll get able to get away with is a Canon HF R800. This camera shoots 1080p 60 fps video, and it has an input for a microphone if you choose to directly connect your audio setup to it.
u/loonybinjones · 3 pointsr/airsoft

This

It isn't the best quality but its within your price range and very, very small.

EDIT: If you can find a way to protect your phone, it would probably be better quality. It would suck for it to take a BB though. This Muvi Veho has a very small lens and metal body though so I'm sure it could withstand a beating.

u/nAmAri3 · 3 pointsr/farming

Thats basically it. Only the copter is a bit bigger nad stronger and a GoPro was mounted.

u/TMA-3 · 3 pointsr/Filmmakers

Yes.

I have this and I've made 2 short films with it. Admittedly terrible short films, but at least I made them. And it wasn't the fault of the camera, it was my own--because my script was awful, because I didn't know how to manage my time, because I knew nothing about lighting, composition, focal length, aperture, sound design, etc.

A Sundance-accepted feature film was shot on an iPhone. Surely if a mobile telephone can do it then a camcorder can do it as well. That's because the camera is just the paintbrush, it doesn't matter if you have a generic $1 one or a fancy $50 one. What matters is your brushstroke technique, the type of canvas you choose, your use of colors and shapes, of light and shadows, and how you mix and juxtapose and shape them. The final product will be a creation greater than the sum of its parts.

If you think you need a better camera to tell your story, then you're basically saying that your gear is more important than you are. It's not.

This is a quote from a book I'm reading now called Free Play: Improvisation in Life and Art by Stephen Nachmanovitch that really stuck with me:

>"One of the illusions our flute player has to drop by the wayside is that the wonder of the master's music has to do with the new flute, or the method of playing it. It's not the flute. Sometimes we think, If only I had a great instrument--a Stradivarius, a supercomputer with great graphics, a fine, perfectly equipped sculpture studio--I could do anything with it. But an artist can take the cheapest instrument and do anything with it as well. The artistic attitude, which involves a healthy dose of bricolage, frees us to see the possibilities before us; then we can take an ordinary instrument and make it extraordinary."

Now get the fuck off Reddit and go make something great.

u/DonOblivious · 3 pointsr/bikecommuting

He linked to the counterfeit of the knockoff, so, yeah. This one is the legit knockoff.

u/atetuna · 3 pointsr/explainlikeimfive

5-6 hours is still good, but it sure would be nice if it could take a 64GB card so it could record all day. At least mine doesn't. Fortunately 32GB cards are cheap. I want a second card for the trip I'm taking tomorrow, so I'm about to go to Costco and see if their 32GB cards are class 10. Fwiw, I'm using an SJ4000 as my dashcam. I want to get a second camera of some sort that I can install in the rear, and that will double as a reverse cam that I can view on my stereo lcd to help me out when off roading at night.

u/cfoster5 · 3 pointsr/kindafunny

It's very hard to find a good camera in that price range. If you have a phone that is less than a couple years old, you're probably better to go that route. That said, if you can afford a GoPro, the guys use a GoPro HERO4 BLACK as a backup camera that would be better than a smartphone in most applications. This model's built in mic is said to be much better than the new model that was just released. If you want to use an external mic, you'll need this adapter. You can also find all of their gear in a post I made here, if you're interested.

Edit: If you decide to use a smartphone, this is a pretty good mic that attaches directly to a phone.

u/HalifaxSamuels · 3 pointsr/StLouis

Never heard of a place that rents them, but there's this for pretty cheap if you don't need professional-level quality. That's not to say it's poor quality, though; I've used that model and it isn't bad.

u/sharkie002 · 3 pointsr/videography

I would highly recommend any option that allows the use of an external mic. Nobody enjoys watching videos with inferior audio, and a cheap $30 lav or mini shotgun would be miles ahead of internal camera or cell phone mics.

At $300, their are plenty of camcorder type cameras that will give you decent enough video quality (not 4K). The main advantage of this option would be the use of a large zoom range if needed. The Canon Vixia r800 is about the cheapest you can get with a mic input, and can record 1080/60p.

If you want better quality, i would recommend the Panasonic FZ300 a bridge camera, which gives you all the manual controls and feel of a DSLR, bit a fixed super zoom lens. I recommend the FZ300 because

  • flip out articulating screen,

  • a mic input,

  • records 4K/30p, 1080/60p, 720/120p

  • constant aperture f2.8 lens

  • 24X zoom range

Its a fun camera to use if your used to DSLR controls. The wifi app comes in handy if your shooting alone, as it lets you view your framing, control the zoom and focus, set exposure, start stop recording, and playback your footage instantly on your phone for review.

The next step up IMO is the G7, which is a DSLM, has most of the above features, a bigger m43 sensor to improve low light performance, but you lose the super zoom lens and the 120p recording, and at the moment is $600.

But I think you can't go wrong with the FZ300..
u/SkankingDevil · 3 pointsr/peacecorps

Heyo! A big part of my service has been doing video projects for promotion of events, NGOs, and other PCV projects. I've just got a handheld Canon camcorder.

Get yourself a wireless lapel mic kit, an extra battery, a camera bag, an SD card for increased memory, and a tripod before you head out. You can opt to spend big money of these things, but I reccomend starting economically and growing your kit over the years.

My PC computer is pretty low end, so I run VideoPad for all the editing.

This is the exact make and model I use. It's economical, but if you use it right, you can get primo professional results. Good luck!!!

https://www.amazon.com/Canon-VIXIA-R800-Camcorder-Black/dp/B01N7OAH3I

u/Andrewbot · 3 pointsr/battlebots

Sure thing! After watching other bot fights online my two main goals were:

1: Shut up. People don't want to hear my commentary on the fights.

2: Don't over-use the zoom and try to track the bots. Earlier in the tournament I found myself zooming too much and not catching a nice flip or someone got launched too quickly out of frame.

The camera I used was this one from Canon:
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01N7OAH3I/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o02_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

And while I was happy with the video quality I am honestly pretty disappointed with the audio. If you look at the bundle shot at the bottom you can see that one of the microphones is directly in front of the zoom control, and when you hold the camera your finger naturally covers it. That is why I am finding many of my videos sounded muted or like the sound passed through a wall first. I would try to catch myself when filming but must of the time I didn't remember until after the match started. Overall I'd give the camera 3.5-to-4/5 stars.

u/TxBlackLabelRx · 3 pointsr/texas

I've never cared for "the best" terms, I'm more into what fits for you and your budget. I got a dashcam and it lasted all but two years, the battery inside "popped" which caused the screen to go all blue. Not sure if the Texas heat or age got to it, my truck is parked in a carport and only gets mild evening sun.

So I bought this one from in 2016 for my front dash Amazon so far it does the job. If you hardwire it in make sure it has constant power even when the ignition is off since it is all capacitor the date and time will reset after so many hours without power.

This one is my rear camera, I got it free with gift cards when it was $25 and it has muted colors, trees are brownish, but it is okay for a rear dash.

The next upgrade I'd like is the YI dash cam

The top-priced BlackVue dash cams and battery packs along with Go Pro 6 not sure I'd leave these displayed in my vehicle, but if you want to spend that kind of money those are top priced.

Look into getting 32 or 64GB sd card and a mount for the mirror, the Texas heat on sticker types or suction will take a toll, mine are suction based and fall off randomly.

You'll find tons of "best of" videos and really will come away more confused. They all do the same basic operations, some link with your phone which is good for showing police or insurance, some track your speed and GPS, so those extras come with a price.

Pro tip: If you're ever involved in an accident or witness to one with a dashcam, do not ever mention you have a dashcam, get the information needed and let the video speak for you to police or the insurance company only.

We're going with Wolfcom Third Eye. Actually does 1080p, not the 720p I said, and pretty does everything else in the world beside that:

http://www.wolfcomusa.com/

It is big and bulky, but it also replaces your lapel microphone and has a screen on the back so you can check out the recordings almost instantly, which is nice. The bulk is also nice because if you forget to take it off be going to some kind of closed door administrative meeting that you shouldn't be recording, the fact your Wolfcom is still on your lapel is really obvious and someone can remind you.

I know the VieVu LE2 camera is also popular, but it only offers a 70 degree field of vision, compared to the Wolfcom's 120 degree field of vision. Also only 4 GB of storage and they run for 900 a unit. I'm not sure if they're popular because there is some sweet feature I'm missing or the Vievu sales guys are just good at selling overpriced hardware.

Muvi Veho cameras are also popular, they'll go up to 160 degrees field of vision if I recall correctly.

http://www.veho-uk.com/main/shop.aspx?category=camcorder
http://www.amazon.com/Veho-VCC-003-MUVI-BLK-camcorder-Surveillance-Includes/dp/B0029631VI

The Wolfcom though runs 975 a unit, whereas a Veho will start at ~125 and go up depending on what features you want or if you purchase extra batteries/SD cards. They're general use cameras so they lack some of the LEO specific features, like password protecting the video, but they're rugged and not so hard on the wallet if it is a personal expense. Just make your department is fine with you carrying one and you won't get tagged for wiretapping or illegal recordings.

u/functionoverform · 2 pointsr/opencarry

I like this cam, it's not high def but it's good for this situation.

u/[deleted] · 2 pointsr/politics

Hi thebarkingdog,
An English cop here. We've had body cams at our force for several months now, and I think they're a fantastic tool. To address some of your concerns:
The camera we use is a Veho Muvi. I'm not sure on the exact model, but here's a link to a similar one. It's so small that many members of the public do not see it, although we do inform them we are recording.

>First are the small issues, what are the rules regarding videotaping when a police officer needs to use the bathroom? Will he/she be allowed to turn it off? What happens if this officer forgets (legitimately) to turn it back on? Being videotaped will change the way I interact with my partners and coworkers, just because I'm a government employee, does this mean I'm not allowed to have a personal conversation on the job? How else am I supposed to bond with the people that I have to trust in scary situations?

The recorder has the option to turn it on and off at your discretion. As a rule of thumb, when we're en-route to an incident it is advised that we turn it on and leave it on until the incident is finished. "But what happens if you forget?!" Nothing happens. We have been told by professional standards that these are a tool to protect us not catch us out.

Once the incident is over, we can go back to the station, review the footage, and cut/paste as we see fit. It is then uploaded to a central server. However, Joe public, I hear you cry out "So they edit out the bit where they beat you up - DISGUSTING". Just remember if there is footage missing, and a complaint comes in, you have just potentially missed out on the best opportunity to save yourself. professional standards could view it that you were indeed hiding something if you start cutting out random pieces. We're advised to just let it role then upload the whole lot.

Any other time, we turn it off to reserve power.

>Second, are the slightly bigger issues, if I am required to have my camera on during interactions with citizens, how will this affect the way I interact with victims? Domestic Violence victims or sex crimes victims may not want to seek help if they know they're going to be recorded. These are matters which require a lot of discretion and confidentiality. And as the first responder, interviewing them and getting information before a detective arrives is very important. Where/how do we draw the line when it comes to these kinds of calls?

We have been advised not to record at sexual assaults. DV incidents are OK though, permitting they want you to record in their home. If not, turn it off. No problem. Honestly, when you're dealing with an incident you forget you're even wearing it!

>Thirdly, cameras on officers could severely limit a police officers discretion. If I give Tommy a break on a speeding ticket and only issue a warning, but I don't do the same to Sally, what's to say I'm not being fair and impartial? To avoid that scrutiny, I'm just going to have to ticket everyone. Guess I can't overlook the 50 year old retiree drinking a glass of wine on his front porch because that's drinking in public, I guess I'll have to issue him an arrest citation. Police officers have a wide range of discretion and it's important they be able to exercise it.

Generally you wouldn't use it in these situations. Besides, who is to tell you who you use your discretion with? It's your discretion for a reason. As long as you can justify it, why worry?

>Lastly, what's to stop a police department from just placing closed circuit cameras in busy parts of the city? I don't know about you, but I don't particularly like the idea of the government videotaping me without just cause.

Ha. You should come to England. All busy town centres have CCTV. They're usually owned by the council of that area, who have ties in with the Police.

To sum up, you are looking at it negatively. Don't look at it with the force trying to get you out the job, look at it in the sense that you go to an incident and at the end you can say "I did my job properly, and here is my evidence to prove it."

u/motoscotland · 2 pointsr/MotoUK

Thanks for watching :-) I guess you get what you pay for, in total I have spent £30 (from a gift voucher) on the camera.

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Veho-VCC-003-Muvi-Micro-Camcorder/dp/B0029631VI

I'd like a drift or gopro but they are way out of my budget at the moment unfortunately.

u/Smaskifa · 2 pointsr/bikecommuting

I tried a Contour Roam 3 and was quite disappointed. Very shaky video, and the mount fastener was not at all secure, resulting in camera launching from bike to road. Also the brightness setting didn't seem to work at all. The sky was way too bright on mine, and setting it to the minimum setting in the config program didn't seem to have any effect.

I then got a Sony AS15 which is FAR better, though out of your price range at about $160. It's an older model camera, but it can do 1080p 60fps. I usually do 30fps, though as I found that even very fast SD cards could not handle the record speed and would result in glitchy artifacts. Also, 60fps videos take up roughly twice as much storage space.

Here are a couple sample videos shot with the Sony AS15:

Without YouTube video stabilization: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PSV3oKJZZb4

With YouTube stabilization: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=itSFuUo6hD8

u/koeidels · 2 pointsr/snorkeling

I would have said Sony HDR-AS15. It comes with a waterproof housing, has 1920x1080@60fps recording capability and generally decent quality - all for $130 (what's your definition of cheap BTW?).

The downside is you have to go through a complicated process to prevent fogging inside the housing - or else you'll get 5min of clear footage and the rest will be garbage. (Like replacing the housing with Argon gas - versus water-containing air).

Rather go for a - I know - GoPro Hero Edition. It can go waterproof without a case (so no fogging issues) and cost the same as the Sony - $130.

u/wildncrazyguy · 2 pointsr/bicycling

I have the Sony Action Cam HDR-15.

I can't claim any comparison because I've never used any other video cameras, but so far I've really enjoyed mine. I take it on every daily commute, for safety reasons and to show some of the more memorable moments to friends and family from time to time.

As for quality, it's good, but could be better. From the videos I've seen, we're not talking GoPro quality here, but for ~$160 I'm not complaining.

I've posted a few videos on YouTube:

  • Here is one on my rocky gravel road. I had the steady feature on and also used YouTube's stabilization feature. You can see that the ride was bumpy, but overall, you can still see the tress and the landscape and the lettering from most road signs. However, I think the most damning issue in these videos is that it is VERY difficult to see license plates, even from close up.
  • Here is a video of a ride taken at night. I think this video better demonstrates the quality of the video. Notice, however, that the video capture is pretty poor when the ride meanders off to a windy back road with no streetlamps. I had a lone LED headlight that I bought for ~$10. If the video couldn't see me, I started wandering if cars could. Inevitably, I ended up buying two of these very bright led headlights. I just tested them out last night and whew, they are bright! Unfortunately, I haven't edited the video just yet to see how much of an improvement they are, but will try to post it later today.

    Other considerations:

I really like the wifi feature of this camera. I rarely use my phone as the camera's remote, but I like that I have the option, and that I can show off my videos on the fly.

I'm also a fan of changing the recording to intervals. This basically allows me to use the Action Cam as a point and shoot camera. We got some good pictures during our hike up Rough Ridge the other day using the Action Cam in its housing.

If you just want ultra wide shots you could as well just get a pro or a camera of the like. They are more portable than DSLRs and you get the super wide field of view. Also some of the "copies" like the SJ4000 can be pretty cheap.

https://www.amazon.com/SJCAM-Original-SJ4000-Action-Camera/dp/B00MIT658W

The whole advantage of the DSLR is the ability to change lens as needed so it depends if you just have a specific purpose or want something versatile.

The competition easily buys one and tears it down so it doesnt really protect anything....it probably is like the YI4K which is sold for 279 with a diving case

If you just need video here are a couple decent camcorders"

Sony

Canon R700

If you want a little more versatility you can look around ebay at some cheap dslrs, The T2i is around your price frame and can do video and photo.

u/that_random_Italian · 2 pointsr/bootroom

Camcorders are pretty well priced for what you get out of it. Find somethign that has atleast x10 optical zoom. And be sure to specify optical zoom, not Total or digital zoom.

Sony Handycam is a solid device for a good price. JVC also makes decent ones too.

u/HybridCamRev · 2 pointsr/videography

/u/kalob17 - yes, you can significantly improve your image quality for $500. The best value for your money would probably be something like a [$447.99 (on sale) 4K Panasonic FZ300 20x superzoom] (https://www.amazon.com/Panasonic-DMC-FZ300K-Megapixel-2-3-inch-Dustproof/dp/B011PKJI2Y//ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&linkCode=ll1&tag=battleforthew-20).

This camera has 4K resolution, an external mic jack, a swiveling LCD screen so you can see yourself when you're in front of the camera, a built-in 24x constant aperture f/2.8 lens and 120 fps slow motion at 720p.

Here is the image quality this camera can produce (please watch at 2160p and your monitor's highest resolution):

u/ChingShih · 2 pointsr/sony

You might take a look at handy cams in the HDR-CX line, particularly the HDR-CX440 which is $300, and it's cousin with a built-in projector HDR-PJ440. They do full 1080p@60FPS recording and it has a good 60x optical zoom. I have the previous generation, the CX330, which I used to record this 2-hour walking safari. The CX440 should be about the same.

Right at the $500 mark is the HDR-CX675, but it's specifications are so similar to that of the CX440 that I'm not sure it's worth the difference. If you wanted much better quality than the CX/PJ series, then look at Sony's FDR-AX series of high-end consumer camcorders and see if you can find a good bargain. You might be able to find a new, older generation mode of a camcorders on this page for $500.

Panasonic has some compelling options in the $400-500 range as well.

u/butterbal1 · 2 pointsr/scuba

If it was me I would go with the no-pro/knock off option and just sell them.

You can get a surprisingly decent camera for pretty cheap like this 1080p model for $90.

Rent it out for $25/day with a $150-200 deposit. You will recover your investment after the first long weekend owning it and you can give renters the option at any time to just keep the camera or they lose it they already paid for it with the deposit.

Sell them a new SD card with every rental so they can keep it and not worry about if a previous user made some "home movies" with it. If they want you to do any editing you can copy the data on the boat and send them home with the raw video and upload a high res version that you cut together later.

u/silverfox762 · 2 pointsr/Harley

Well the Canon VIXIA HF R700 does record at 1080p 60fps an it's $298 on amazon. i'ts a camcorder so i think is enough portable for you.

u/Gaffers_Tape · 2 pointsr/videoproduction

The best you're going to do at $500 (but still see significantly improved picture quality) is probably a $200-ish consumer grade camera and the rest on a capture device. for HDMI to USB3, I've used this one many times and it works well:

https://www.amazon.com/Magewell-XI100DUSB-Video-Capture-Dongle/dp/B00I16VQOY

But that doesn't leave much room to play for a camera and stay around $500. For consumer cameras I like the picture quality of the Canon Vixia line, but Sony, Panasonic, etc. have similar consumer cameras at similar prices. Here's one that fits the budget:

https://www.amazon.com/Canon-VIXIA-R700-Camcorder-Black/dp/B019UDIL80/

This one even has a mic jack, which is a nice plus.

You might be able to save even more on the capture device by getting something like one of the Blackmagic decklink capture cards, if you have a desktop to put it in. Still, you're only going to save $15-$25 or so.

If you can put your budget into the $1,500-$2,000 then you could move up to a true prosumer camera or even a professional camera if you buy used. A used Panasonic HMC-150 should be going for about $1-$1.5k on ebay. You'd really see a jump up to pro looking video at that point.

u/MacintoshEddie · 2 pointsr/Filmmakers

Well, the easiest option, which a comedian I work with sometimes uses, is to just hit voice memo on his phone and drop it in his pocket. That gets the most important stuff, what his delivery sounds like and how the audience responds.

The next question is do you want to record yourself, or the audience, or both at the same time? The contrast is usually massive, with the stage being blinding bright and the audience being pitch black, so for most cheap cameras you have to pick one.

One option to consider is if you can get a line out from the house mixer, or just give them a card/drive to record to. That would give you the best audio of you, and then your recorder can get the audience noise.

Another thing to consider is that by the very nature of the event you won't be able to monitor the camera, and probably nobody else will either. You probably won't even be able to see it due to the lights, so it might walk away and you have no idea until the end of your set.

Something like a $200-$400 camcorder is probably going to be the best option here. Set it and forget it, and if it goes for a walk you're not going to be financially crippled.

Keep an eye on Amazon Goldbox as well as used sites like BHPhoto. They often have pretty decent discounts.
This is the Canadian site but this Canon camcorder is 30% off. https://www.amazon.ca/gp/aw/d/B019UDIL80/

In that case just your basic 1080p camcorder like this one would be a good option, they don't have particularly crisp video but would be better than the iPhone 5 and easier to manage. More light always helps of course, a nice brightly lit room makes it have a lot less noise.

I am moving to Germany at the end of the month for about two years, and I will be doing a LOT of traveling during this time. u/L0LPanda · 2 pointsr/Ultralight

At around $400USD I would say you have three options:
Sony RX100 MkI, a Go Pro or your phone.

The S7 has decent camera quality, and while the RX100 will be more durable, I would opt to save the money instead. Image quality from the RX100 might be a little better (you'll definitely have more control over the image).

The Go Pro could definitely work. Those things are built like tanks, my mate takes one hiking and records some nice time lapses and video. However, image quality is poor (probably worse than your phone) and the fisheye effect looks out of place for a hiking video.

IMO, save the money until you have enough to get the RX100 MkIII/IV which will be a noticeable upgrade from your phone.

Edit: Also, the S7 has expandable storage, throw a 32GB micro-SD card in there and that'll be you set for storage.

The problem is the battery. The latch wears out. There is strap you can get on amazon for about 8 bucks that will provide some safety. it’s kind of a design problem.

u/insaneyoshi · 2 pointsr/DJISpark

Hi,

I have both accessories, and since both clip on in a similar way, I can confirm you will not be able to get the battery retainer in as well as the landing legs. Both accessories go around the same spot on the back arms of the drone.

Here's what I have:

Battery strap: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B076WZVM89/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1

You can either get a different set of landing legs that don't clip on like these, or you will need to choose using either the battery strap or the legs at a time.

You might want to buy a battery clip - https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B076WZVM89/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1 - as the batteries tend to come loose with age/use. My neighbor's did, and it dropped into the lake (luckily shallow enough he could retreive it). I always fly with the battery clipped in now!

PS: Neighbor was able to restore his waterlogged drone by shoving it in a bag of rice for three days - it flew!

Depending on the price limit/your budget, something like this looks like it might do the trick.

It's basically a video recorder that you don't have to hold in your hand. I've seen it used on top of helmets when skiing/snowboarding and to document experiences where it may not be very convenient to hold a camcorder.

u/stuartmcdade · 1 pointr/EDC

If you are looking for a body camera, something like this would work quite well. You can just clip it onto your clothing/bag and start it when you need it.

Something you could also consider carrying is a personal alarm like this. They are good because it would both draw the attention of anyone around you and it would also temporarily incapacitate any would-be attackers due to the shock of the piercing noise.

Other than that I can think only of things that everyone should be doing, and what it sounds like you are already doing, for their personal safety and security. Stick to well-lit streets at night even though cutting through that dark alley would save you five minutes on the walk home, etc.

u/jurbaniak28 · 1 pointr/snowboarding

I have the GoPro HD Hero 2 outdoors edition, this edition will come with a lot of what you need, like sticky mounts to mount to your helmet. You will need to get an SD card because GoPros do not come with them, i went on amazon and bought a 32 GB one, http://www.amazon.com/SanDisk-32GB-Flash-Memory-SDSDB-032G-B35/dp/B002G12OBO/ref=pd_cp_e_2 there's the link for that. 32 GB is the biggest it will take and i recommend getting that, because with that the battery will die before you run out of space. Another accessorie i suggest getting is a pole mount from www.gopole.com this is the classic mount for snowboarding, it allows you to film yourself or turn it around and film friends to make those nice edits. If you are debating between HD Hero and Hero 2 go with Hero 2, its a little more but its worth it for the quality of the video, I got mine discounted on amazon http://www.amazon.com/GoPro-HD-HERO2-Outdoor-Edition/dp/B005WY3TI4/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1346967661&sr=8-1&keywords=gopro+2

My Sony HDR-AS15 has the wrong profile for the shot you did with your GoPro.

70 kts is fine. I think you are simply touching down too early. You want to avoid the ground for as long as possible, floating in ground effect until it stalls. Finer and quicker elevator input and practice should do the trick. But you're doing fine right now, so no worries. :)

The lens on that cam has an 35mm equiv. of 32.5mm at the widest, that's very wide.

Personally i would prefer something more towards the 24mm range instead of 32.5, otherwise your face will fill too much of the frame or isn't fully in frame when you don't fully stretch your arm and that gets tiresome.

You can add and additional wide angle lens but the cheap ones are optically not that great, and the original ones from canon are expensive.

Just as an example, this Sony has an 26.8mm lens, but does not come with an mic jack.

I've been happy with the camera build quality, picture quality, and the moderately happy with the accessories that came with it. Some of the mounts and clips that came with it broke because they're cheap plastic, but I've been happy with the waterproof case. Here's a 720P, 60fps video that I took this morning while on my commute. This is in the waterproof case with no openings for clearer sound, mounted on my handlebar, automatic image adjustment settings, and riding East towards the sun. Do note that this was quickly recorded in VLC and processed through VidMe so there will be some video quality degradation.

u/surveillance_cam · 1 pointr/videosurveillance

When I search Amazon for "SJ4000" basically everything that comes up seems to have a battery life of 90 minutes (like this for example, which is 70). It comes with extra batteries so that you can record longer, but that does me no good because I wouldn't be able to change batteries during a shift.

u/geekandwife · 1 pointr/Cameras

Yeah, if you just have a chromebook the webcam won't be the best choice, but an action cam will do you just fine, however most of them will top out at about 70 min battery life.

That is the one I use myself. I can use my cell phone to line up the video and start recording, and its a great little camera.

I have a GoPro clone that is actually pretty good and it was $86

I recently scored a Canon Vixia HF R700 due to some great advice in this sub a few months ago. Since then I've used it in multiple situations including at Indiana Comic Con 2017 and GenCon 2017. Here's a picture of the setup I use. Since then I think the next generation Canon Vixia HF R800 is the one that's available. Good luck! And if you find something else let me know. I'm always interested in upgrading gear if it's the right thing to do.

Looks like Xiami Yi 4 or the Xiami Yi 4+ are the rising competitors. They apparently use the same sensors as the GoPro (the sony one) but I don't know about accessories, like something like a BacPac extended battery from GoPro, I don't know if it would fit on the YI 4+.

> The camera uses a 12.3 Megapixel Sony IMX377 1/2.3-inch CMOS sensor, which could very well be the same one that GoPro uses in its HERO5 Black.

The Theta S is already quiet high on my wish list now!
Does anyone have experiences with the YI 360 VR https://www.amazon.com/YI-Dual-Lens-Resolution-Electronic-Stabilization/dp/B01CW4C2HU/
or Samsung Gear 360 https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01D9LVL3G/ (just stumbled upon the huge discount atm)?

u/shooteredditor · 1 pointr/Multicopter

He is sponsored by Samsung, and this is taken with the Samsung 360 Camera. This is what a 360 photo looks like before it's stitched.

u/DanielArnett · 1 pointr/vjing

So the DSLR style 360 cameras are pretty absurdly expensive. You can get the original Gear 360 for really cheap. The Garmin Virb 360 looks really smooth considering it has built in stabilization and you can overlay data like gps position, altitude, speed, etc onto the video making it a really nice action cam. As for high end; Samsung has the 360 round which looks really nice.

u/AltoRetrato · 1 pointr/GearVR

I love my Samsung Gear 360! The first model is currently only US$ 66 at Amazon, which is a bargain! It has a better resolution for pictures and is selling for almost half the price of the Gear 360 2017 edition, but the newer model can do live streaming on Facebook.

If you want better pictures, I'd go for the older model. If you want to live stream on Facebook, get the new one.

Depends on your budget and what videos ur making.

Shotgun mic:TAKSTAR SGC-598
https://www.amazon.com/TAKSTAR-SGC-598-Interview-Microphone-Camcorder/dp/B00E58AA0I

Camera I would recommend: Canon vixia hf r800
https://www.amazon.com/Canon-VIXIA-HF-R800-Camcorder-Black/dp/B01N7OAH3I?th=1&psc=1

Video editing depends what your computer can handle and what video ur making. I use hitfilm express which is free. However it needs a decent gpu of some sort. Shotcut on the other hand is pretty basic and runs well on lower end hardware.

(Make sure you use express)https://fxhome.com/

u/wadestechtips · 1 pointr/Cameras

The only other camera I might recommend for under $250 is a canon hr800? I doubt it has a much better internal mic than the Sony BUT it can send sound over and hdmi cable if you ever need to live stream with it.

It does have a mic input and I might recommend buying a cheap $20 shotgun mic for it. Once again, you get what you pay for but it might be better than the Sony!

Hi,

I highly recommend the Vixia HF R800 if you are just getting into using an actual camera over a webcam.

If you want to go for something a lot better, and also more expensive, check out the Sony AX33

Both cameras feature "Clean HDMI out" meaning you can turn off all the OSD(On screen display features like recording time, date, etc).

If you have questions about either I'd be happy to answer as best I can.

u/matt_the_hat · 1 pointr/scuba
u/sh1ttydefaults · 1 pointr/motorcycles

I got this Chinese action camera on Amazon for $60. Throw in a 64gb microsd card for $20 and you've got a full setup for $80.

I flashed the firmware on mine when I first got it and it inverted the colors on the little display. Didn't bother me and it worked just fine but I told the company and they sent me out a full new kit.

u/jwinskowski · 1 pointr/motorcycles

I've got this little baby mounted to the top of my helmet. Great video/construction quality for the price, came with several mounting solutions included (enough to get it up on my helmet as well as use my new Gear 360 up there for sweet 360 vids.) It comes with two batteries, which each last about 85-90 mins and they sent me two more (plus a charger) for leaving a review. I could also use it while plugged in to the bike, but that would be a hassle so I don't.

EDIT: I tried having it mounted to the turn signal mount on the front of my bike and the vibration was way too much to get a good video. No OIS on this camera but also just a bad spot on the bike.

u/brochaos · 1 pointr/whitewater

I read a bunch of reviews and ended up with this one: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B06XFM62GB/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o01_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Here's some footage. I haven't found a free video editor that will let me upload/export 1080p. So these are 720p/60.

How about this attachment for your smartphone?:

u/Eccentrica_Gallumbit · 1 pointr/HomeImprovement

For the FLIR camera, you're looking at min $200 (Android version, iPhone Version).

Blower door test I guess you could rig something up yourself like this guy did. You'd need a fairly thick plastic dropcloth, and would need to seal it against the door frame and a fairly strong box fan with tape. Turn the fan on facing outward, and then go around the room and you should be able to feel any leaks, you should easily be able to feel air flowing in at this point.

I bought three sets of these, three of these main 950lmn a roll of 3m and a couple cams

u/nesben · 1 pointr/gopro

Never mind. Here's a link to the Hero6 on Amazon.

u/InvisibleJiuJitsu · 1 pointr/videography

you'll probably get a ton of recommendations for the panasonic G7 with a reasonably wide lens to fit you all in shot, it's a really excellent little 4k camera for the price.

or if you need to save money for audio/lights etc, you could settle for a gopro hero6 or gopro hero 7. amazon referral links included

Let us know more about your budget for lights and audio, or if you have those bases covered already

u/Troopr1023 · 1 pointr/DJISpark

I would strongly suggest buying a battery strap too. The Spark has a defect whereby in some cases the battery will pop out mid flight. I know, because it happened to me. DJI hasn’t officially acknowledged the defect but there stories of other Spark owners having this same problem.

u/cwacht · 1 pointr/washingtondc

For $100 you could get 2 of these. Then get all this so you can mount them any way you like.

You can shop around and find even cheaper actioncams. Just make sure it is well reviewed. They wont be as good as the latest gopro, and they'll only capture a license plate number under ideal conditions, but if you ride in traffic often and arent willing to spend much, these are great.

u/CraZcraaacker · 1 pointr/iphone

Try this for 40 bucks. Great little GoPro clone for your needs.

Ok so what if I bought a drone built to carry a sports camera like the other commenter had said? For example this drone: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01N012YWY/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_Qh4KDbSY8PJ0B
With this camera: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07B2W96JH/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_.i4KDb8XNWBAS
With those two together would i have technically have made my own working camera drone for cheap without the issues? I'm also open to looking at other drones and cameras those are just examples.

Knockoff GoPro shooting in 720p for space reasons. The exact model is this one right here (non-affiliate link)

u/Bemo98 · 0 pointsr/fpv

It depends on the purpose. For FPV the GoPro camera is well suited but for an action cam with the best image quality is this one. Little bit cheaper than GoPro Hero 3 Black Edition. But you really can use this one for fpv.

I do not know what the cable is. Unfortunately I'm doing this for a client and I don't have this stuff in front of me, and we're pressed for time.

I do not know what type of cable exactly it is we're using right now. What I do know is that the old camera (some old Sony camcorder I think, probably cost $250) worked just fine the way we're trying to do things. This new camera is a Panasonic V770.

u/steamknight563 · -1 pointsr/videography

The "cinematic" look usually comes from color grading (I could be wrong). Also, 720p seems like a low resolution. If you could save up and get perhaps a 1080p camcorder, maybe that would work better, perhaps something like [this one] (https://www.amazon.com/Sony-Recording-HDRCX405-Handycam-Camcorder/dp/B00R5LH9HO/ref=sr_1_4?s=photo&ie=UTF8&qid=1466397276&sr=1-4&keywords=sony+camcorder)

Edit: Or you could get something like a refurbished Nikon d3300 (bundled with a 18-55mm lens and a wifi adapter) for $319 with coupon code DXPRO2X65.
