These magnetic phone holders that you stick in your car's AC vent. I stick my phone on there (if your phone isn't made of metal, they include metal plates to either attach to your phone or slip inside your case).

People always ask me how my phone "just sticks like that" because it's so easy to use. The magnet is surprisingly strong, but not OBNOXIOUS. I can pull my phone off easily, and it doesn't fall off when I slam on the brakes hard enough for my purse to fly off the passenger seat.

I have tried SO MANY PHONE HOLDERS and this is the best thing I've found. I hate the ones that attach to your windshield because I feel like they block my friend of vision and I don't like the ones that your phone clips into, because it's always a pain to get your phone out of it. I bought that one that had the green sticky stuff and it was the absolute worst. This one fits right above my radio buttons, so it's in my sightings but unobtrusive, and within reach if I need to change my map or something.

I've bought these for my brother, my boyfriend (he used to drive with his phone in his lap and it drove me insane), one for me to put in my boyfriend's car, my other friend and her boyfriend, and everyone loves them.

I wanted a button box but didn't want to spend time or money on one. So, I came up with this instead.

u/Eazy_DuzIt · 25 pointsr/AskWomen

Spend a couple extra bucks and get the one that pivots. Makes all the difference. Also, don't skimp and buy the cheap version of this (like from Wish.com), the magnets are too weak to hold the phone. I've tried several. The type below is the best design.

I’m not sure what this would be called on Amazon, but I have a suction cup mount with a 6-9 inch bendable arm that I mount on the small window between the driver side window and the windshield. It has a magnetic plate that you put in your phone case and that’s what holds the phone to the mount. It works really well. If I find an Amazon link for it I’ll post it in an edit below.

Edit:

Found something really similar to what I've been using.

Most of the complaints for that car are for the auto-stop/start engine and with the 9 speed transmission. Also the infotainment is pretty outdated as you've seen...

Aside from that you are getting an excellent V6, best AWD system, high reliability, quiet and smooth ride, and great looks. Not to mention Acurawatch on the advance.

If you could get it for $22k I would say go for it. There are not many cars with more pros than the TLX!

As for the lack of carplay, my suggestion is this https://www.amazon.com/SCOSCHE-MAGVM2-MagicMount-Magnetic-Phone/dp/B00PMOCI72/ref=sr_1_8?ie=UTF8&qid=1527216510&sr=8-8&keywords=vent+magnet

This one:
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0175W45I8/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_xYjCxbMZQY6PW
The mount side goes into your CD player slot. A thin steel piece goes between your case and your phone. It just snaps on and off magnetically. Works super well. Have a Nexus 6p in my Crosstrek and as long as you tilt it up a bit, you can see both displays fully. I put Google maps on the phone and Pandora on the car screen. Love it.

This is much much much more stable than the glass suction mounts and ac vent mounts. It's the best thing to ever happen to phone mounts. You lose the ability to play cds but which self respecting smartphone owner would do that anyway?

u/handbrah · 6 pointsr/CasualConversation

I actually got a CD slot-mounted holder for my phone so the CD slot can actually do something useful.

I think my next car will just have a bluetooth audio connection (and wireless charging).

This guy is a game-changer: https://www.amazon.ca/Scosche-MAGVM2-MagicMount-Vent-Magnetic/dp/B00PMOCI72

Magnetic mount that just clips onto one of your vents. They also make dash and window mount options.

u/jellyrollo · 4 pointsr/Maine

Get a dash mount to hold your phone. I use this one that clips into my air vent. Makes it much easier to glance over and check map directions, and if you do get a call or text, at least you can see who it's from to figure out if it's worth pulling over to respond.

I had been looking for a way to easily use my phone for Android Auto in my ND1 before I get the OEM AA or use AIO. Anyways, after searching for a good way to mount everything this is what I settled on, and so far I really like it. The cup holder mount from MX5things snapped into the cupholder slot perfectly and feels really solid, especially considering it's 3D printed. Some of that is undoubtedly due to the sleeving added on after the printing (by MX5things, not myself). The Trianium mount was super cheap, and included a base you can glue to your dash (blech). Also had two metal plates to be placed on or under the phone case. I ended up peeling up the veneer of my Carved.com pixel case and placing it there. The screwback is why I went with it, there's no press fit action for the ballhead, and instead you unscrew the feature, and then you can pivot the ball more freely or removed from the mount. With where I placed the metal disk in my phone case, and the direction I like to use it, the rightmost HVAC dial is covered while in use, but not super difficult to deal with. Driving around terrible roads of metro Detroit, the whole set-up is holding well and all together cost me much less than the Cravenspeed setup.

I just bought this from Amazon. There was a nice deal posted on slick deals a couple of days ago for 1.99.

I bought this one to mount on that weird small window between the windshield and drivers side window. It works well because the arm is so long, so I mount it to that window and have it curve over to face the driver. Suction cup has held on pretty well...I’m about 7 months into using it.

Yes that is true! I've been using this magnet mount since pixel 3:

You need a strong magnet to hold it safely, i use this one (old version):

And i have this case for the Pixel 4XL AND mounts well with it "safely" (at your own risk of course, if u go thru bumpy roads) But definitely holds better than pixel 3!!

Thanks for the reminder. It was such a whirlwind trying to get everything in BikeIndex and Garage529 and talking to the police that I forgot to put the details here.

For the Cannondale Synapse SE 105 Disc 2019 it is unfortunately a 2 month old bike so it doesn't have too much to distinguish it from a stock new bike. The only modifications that I did were reversible accessory additions like

  • Shimano SPD PD-ED500 pedals
  • gopro handlebar mount with the Cycliq Fly12 CE twist mount
  • 2x black bottle holders
  • Topeak Explorer Rack Without Spring with a Cycliq Fly6 camera mount attached
  • cell phone holder on the stem
  • Upstand bike stand

The bike rack looks a little out of place compared to the rest of it as it is actually a little beat up from wear on a previous bike. It also sports a Cambridge Bicycle store sticker. Serial number MD21685

For the Marin Fairfax SC4 Belt 2018 it is a little easier. It has a bike room sticker for EF Education first. It also has the same Topeak bike rack which is beat up from a car accident. The left rear side of the rack is bent in slightly. It also has one of the water bottle holders and has the normal Cycliq Fly12CE camera mount directly attached. The belt drive is also fairly unusual so I am hoping it stands out more. It also has a sticker for Farina's in Watertown and the serial number appears to be 041716870 MRN-111-01-190.

I've been using this one for about a year in my BMW. I really like it. I'll be using it in my XV when it gets here. The only down side is that if you use inductive charging, you have to take the case off to charge becasue of the metal plate. I don't, so no big deal

u/m0nkeybl1tz · 2 pointsr/BuyItForLife

Buy an inexpensive tripod like this and a mount like this and you can use your cell phone as a camera. The tripod and mount will last way longer than any webcam, and can be used with any future phone you buy. Almost all phones today shoot 1080p, and the tripod will give you way more flexibility in setting up shots.

I have been using this for 4 years. Had the G4, V10 and now G5 mounted with no issues. I like the safety strap which has saved the phone on more than one occasion when on bumpy terrain or hitting unexpected obstacles.

u/benryves · 2 pointsr/windowsphone

I'd recommend getting a phone mount with a tripod screw hole so you can use any tripod. I have the Joby GripTight mount and though it is more expensive than some of the other offerings it is about the only one I could find that would work for the Lumia 925 (it straddles the lock button and opens wide enough - a lot of the cheaper options grip the phone in the middle, which would hit the lock button, or only open wide enough for the smaller iPhone). It grips the phone securely and feels like a quality item that justifies the higher price.

As for tripod recommendations, the Velbon DF-61 is very good value for money though being a full-size tripod may be a bit on the large size to carry with you on holiday. I have heard good things about the GorillaPod (and that particular item seems to come with the GripTight mount mentioned earlier) though have not used it myself.

I use a cd slot mount with a magnetic attachment to it. It's nice because i can actually see my speedo info. They regularly go sale so you can look around some more but this is just so you can get the right idea. I'll take a pic of it in my car if you want.

u/19b34413f6f60afd6e4c · 2 pointsr/Miami

Some of the many options for cell phone mounting in vehicles include:

  • CD-slot (you're not using CDs anyway – it's 2019, amiright?)
  • Air vent (personally I dislike because I want that sweet AC @ 100%)
  • Cupholder (not ideal for sure, but better than hand holding it)
  • Windshield suction cup (can be positioned literally anywhere)
  • Dashboard clip (might be a little sketchy on bumps)
  • Adhesive dashboard (not guaranteed to hold up in high temps)
  • Steering wheel "hammock" (super sketchy, but hey)
  • Seat bolts (I use one of these for my iPad – it's OK)

That's plenty of options I think. So I feel confident when I assert anyone who is not using one of those options either has a car so specialized it probably shouldn't be on the street anyway (Ariel Atom?) or they're just making empty excuses because their feelings are hurt by being told not to be unsafe.

FWIW, I'm actually opposed to the law philosophically. But I'll take that to another part of the thread.
u/8ate8 · 2 pointsr/FocusST

I use this: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B077MTNV41/ works really well. I normally didn’t like the idea of vent mounts because they seem like they’d just fall out easily, but this one tightens, so it holds it nicely.

u/butterberr · 2 pointsr/bicycling

Can't find the exact one but it's something like this:

u/mfajma · 2 pointsr/abarth

I am not a big fan of the iPad as it blocks the vents and the radio (I do still use my radio, I must be old). I use my phone in the same way and don't need to type on it, I just use the google assistant and do everything by voice. It does get it a high-tech Telsa sort of look though.

One suggestion is to get a magnetic phone mount. This one on amazon is great and makes is so much easier to put your phone into place. It could be an issue if you don't have case on your phone since you would see the metal plate on the back of your phone. On my pixel I attached the metal plate to the inside of my phone case.

I liked it so much, I ordered a second one for my office desk. It is really slick. Super easy to attach the iPhone to it, just as easy to get it off. Comes in multiple colors if that's your thing. Grip is SUPER strong, through multiple attachments without having to rinse the adhesive suction cup. That grip aspect is pretty amazing. It is also sturdy enough that it doesn't vibrate/bounce around while you're driving.

If you're still deciding on which kind of tripod to purchase, you may want to consider purchasing a universal phone mount that can be screwed into most standard tripods. You could even use it on different tripods as needed, if you were to end up with more than one.

Good coverage, totally support this. Couple of things:
I would get a stand for the phone, you can get one of these for really cheap and a cheap tripod and that would greatly help the video presentation.

Also, have your notes off to the side so you can quickly glance and also just do a quick run down before you hit record.

Those would greatly affect your videos, I like this man keep it up! Curious to see your thoughts going into the season. Good job!

The swivel ball is the same on both, so you can swap one into the other. The result is a phone charger that swivels, is magnetic, charges your phone wirelessly, and fits very nicely between the two center vents under the screen. As far as useful mods that you'll use daily, it doesn't get better than this.

This is the one I use, Its magnetic. I put the metal plate between the rubber and plastic on my note 10 otterbox case. Cant even tell its there.

The magnets a very strong, never had my phone fall. The suction cup has an adhesive on it that makes it stick to slick surfaces or you can use a metal plate to stick to a surface then put the suction cup on there. Its bendable, but will hold its position. Highly recommend

I have an '07 Vstar and I have a bar mount which can swivel and also disconnect if needed. I believe it would be universal. I have a Galaxy 3S phone with an Otterbox cover and it fits fine with no issues. I also run a Scalar Blue Tooth system and can listen to music or answer calls on the fly as I ride. Just a thought. Here is the [mount] (http://www.amazon.com/Arkon-iPhone-Smartphone-Handlebar-Samsung/dp/B004M8ST4A/ref=sr_1_46?ie=UTF8&qid=1425589881&sr=8-46&keywords=universal+motorcycle+cell+phone) that I'm using.

I bought this for my phone a while ago and it's been working wonderfully!
https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B0175W45I8/ref=yo_ii_img?ie=UTF8&psc=1
I actually just keep the metal plate under the back plate on top of the battery. This prevents it from interfering with NFC (I don't have wireless charging, but I would assume it wouldn't interfere with that either because the plate is on the other side of the sticker.) The only issue is if I need to pull the battery, I have an extra thing to keep track of as I pull the back plate off, but that's not really that big of an issue for me.

u/LaRock0wns · 2 pointsr/GooglePixel

https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B077MTNV41/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1

There is a magnet that goes inside my iphone case, and that is what keeps it attached to the magnetic vent mount. Works pretty well, but sometimes the phone comes off the mount if the magnets are way out of line. No adhesive on the dash is a good selling point.

u/C_Troch · 2 pointsr/Nexus6P

Guess it depends on where you need to mount it, but I've had great luck with one of these so far.

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00JUXPHWE

u/SJP0tato · 2 pointsr/HondaElement

I debated this as well when I added an Android Auto head unit into my Element last month:

  1. The existing USB jack is very inconvenient to plug/unplug, unless a cable is ran somewhere more accessible, at which point aesthetic value suffers (who wants a cord dragged across half the dash/console)

  2. The small tray on the right at first seemed ideal, but there's nowhere to place the phone itself, unless you get a holder of some type, but there was nothing I could find that wouldn't interfere with operation of the vehicle (either too close to the wheel, or low enough to hit with my leg while driving). Mounting the phone higher again means a USB cable being run across the dash/console in some manner, and with Android Auto you don't need to look at the phone anyways.
  3. Still inconvenient to plug in, and has USB cords running all over
  4. This is the solution I settled on: You can drop a USB extension down through the front center console (straight down behind the dash where the radio is mounted), run it underneath the floor mat to the center console area. Then I added a USB plug and magnetic cellphone holder to the front of the center console. Mind the placement to ensure you don't obstruct the parking brake operation, nor the drink holder.

    I used:
    https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B014RWATK2/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1
    https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B012PSPRR0/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1
    https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07BS4S89H/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Now when I get in, I plug my phone into a short ~6-inch USB cable, and then let the magnetic holder hang onto it while driving. Easily reachable, simple to unplug/take with me, and the radio is all android auto so I have no need to look at the phone while it's docked/charging.

Congrats on the CX5!

I just recently picked up this magnetic vent phone holder for mine. I had the same concerns about the placement being too low. It's definitely lower than I've had in prior vehicles, but this one is adjustable and for me it works out perfectly fine. I'm very happy with it. I uploaded a few photos for reference: https://imgur.com/a/QaFPzE4

One note on the this mount: I absolutely had to put it on the bottom vent bar and let it rest against the vent frame, since I feel that the torque when taking the phone on/off (even though it's magnetic) could damage the vent. But in this position it feels very sturdy.

u/MattRivers38 · 1 pointr/fordfusion

Bought this for our two cars, including my 2016 Fusion. Very happy with the grip, and I can just zap the phone to the mount whenever I get into the car, instead of tossing it on the seat or into a cupholder. Cheap, strong (been over plenty of bumps in the road and never a shudder), and I can place it anywhere there's a vent. I didn't want a windshield suction cup, something sticky on my dash or a lot of hardware. So far, so good, and at $10 (less if you just buy one), I couldn't pass it up. Easy install with the metal plate taped to the inside of my phone case. I like to use my phone for nav and didn't want it far away.

Agree with the modifry mount. My dash has never sat quite right since install but it’s a minor cosmetic issue.

I stickied a Scosche magnetic mount to it. Works great. I’m probably going to use a pop socket mount this season. For that (same as in my DD) I take a small magnet tab that comes with the Scosche mount, stick it on the back of the pop socket mount, and use that to hold it in place so I can still use the magnet mount if I want.

I am probably going to order another one because I broke the holder part being stupid. I left it in my car and it fell out of my car at work and I found it broken in the road. :(

I don't know how big the S5 is so I don't know for sure if this will work. But I suggest getting something similar with the band the goes over it holding it down. My first phone holder I had didn't have that. My phone ended up on the ground.

Edit

This one looks the same but says it will hold an S5

I made this a couple months ago in about 15 mins with some spare parts and a $3 case from Walmart. I used the included otg connector to plug in my controller.

Found this on Amazon. Same thing I made, but a lot cleaner and only $12 (provided you have a PS4 controller). Probably will pick one up to try since my homemade solution finally fell apart on me a couple weeks ago.

I also know there are a few options that include a third-party controller, but I didn't really like the quality of the one I had years ago. Prefer just using a ps4 controller. Here's one that has a controller included.

Do you have any controllers? Or will you need one? A ps3 or xbox 360 controller would work and be fairly cheap (~$15-20).

I got this mount for my cell phone and with these Bose earbudsThey do a good job of canceling out noise so I don't have to turn up the music to hearing damaging levels.

As for those that say they are afraid of blocking out your surrounding sounds, change the volume, you can hear more than just music.

u/TheDunadan29 · 1 pointr/nexus6

You could get a regular cheap mount and combine it with an OtterBox or other tough case. Normally I wouldn't go for the tough cases since they add a ton of bulk, but you can never be too careful when on a bike. I've been in many accidents, and in at least one I busted my watch. And a Nexus is a lot more expensinve than a watch (at least the kind I buy, no Rolexes for me).

Here's a cheap mount I found on Amazon:

http://www.amazon.com/GreatShield-Clip-Grip-Handlebar-iPhones-smartphones/dp/B00FA892IS/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1426958508&sr=8-2&keywords=bicycle+mount+for+smartphone

You could use any mount really, but those are just the most appealing I found on Amazon.

And if you use a tough case you should be able to find one that is waterproof as well.

Here are some options: (albeit not waterproof, but they have front built in screen protectors which should help with minor water)

http://www.amazon.com/SUPCASE-Full-body-Protective-Protector-Resistant/dp/B00OHFGMGU/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1426959665&sr=8-1&keywords=otterbox+nexus+6

Not specifically related, but I've really enjoyed using the magnetic style mount. They have different styles where you can clip to the air vent or slide into the cd player slot (I don't use CD's so it's perfect for me). No fumbling with the traditional style holders where you have to slide the 2 sides to hold the phone snug. I have a Gen 3 (2009) and use ProClips. They're a little more expensive upfront but are built extremely solidly.

Here's all of the mounting systems I've tried that didn't quite work out except for the last two.

1. Dash Mounted

I have a dash cover, so I can't suction anything onto the dash (I've heard that certain ones also leave residue). I had to use a weighted dash mount (like the ones Garmin sells), but those still slid around from time to time. I also found out real quick that they can become missiles due to having to engage my brakes suddenly to avoid a collision.

2. Vent mounts

They worked alright, but I lost a vent, and the vent kept "closing" from the weight of the mount + holder + phone.

3. Cup holder mount

Worked great if it wasn't for the fact that it was so far away from my regular field of view that it wasn't really safe to look at while operating the vehicle.

4. Windshield suction Cup

Worked quite well, I just found it a PITA to have to unmount and remount it every time I used my sunshade (plus I also had to wipe down the windows every week due to the residue the suction cup left).

5. Magnetic stick-on. (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07BS4S89H/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o07_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1)

Works VERY well, it's universal for other devices since I can slap a metal plate on the back of said items. Also, I can pretty much slap this on any vehicle I want .

6. ProClip (This is specifically for your vehicle, you'll also need a holder as well: https://www.proclipusa.com/vehicle/dashboard-mounts/1070-honda-cr-v/2014).

Between the magnetic stick-on and the pro-clip, I prefer the proclip *slightly* better. It feels extremely solid, and my phone is retained in a position that doesn't obstruct my vision for my windshield. ProClips are a little bit more costly upfront, but they've been designed specifically for the vehicle you purchase them for. On mine it sits slightly to the right of my instrument cluster.

I put a tiny magnetic mount stuck to the bottom left of the screen/glass. I installed it upside down and it holds my huge phone perfectly and doesn’t droop. Plus it doesn’t block my display or my vents.

I just bought this and started using it yesterday: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01EXWKE6A/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o01_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Has been working great so far. I use it with the clear Pixel XL case from Google.

TechMatte vent mount. Works as advertised. Don't like the unsightly round disc I have to put in between my clear case and the phone, but whatevs.

I got this one, works with my case on. This thing will NOT come off your dash. The suction cup on this thing is awesome. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00JUXPHWE
