Apple Macbook Pro

  • i5 CPU
  • 8gb RAM
  • 256gb SSD
  • $1500

    Asus Laptop

  • i5 CPU
  • 8gb RAM
  • 256gb SSD
  • $500

The screen on the Asus is not quite as nice as the one on the macbook but it doesn't account for the $1000 difference in price. You could find one with a nicer screen for a couple hundred more if you looked around.

This one is the same price as the macbook but has more ports, twice the RAM, twice the SSD space, a higher screen resolution, a much better CPU, and dedicated graphics.

    What is apple even doing?

Alright, maybe they aren't, but what you're doing to profit off of users is bullshit. The "featured PC of the week" that users can shop for on your site? There's an identical one on Amazon with the exact same specs, photos and everything, for $100 less- not only are you making users think the PC on your site is a better deal than Amazon's identical model (even if CYBERPOWERPC gives you a different meaningless model number) at $100 more, but you're taking Amazon's profit margin and adding on top of it all for you to keep yourself as profit.

A few things to point out.

The most disappointing video card was between the Radeon VII and the 1650. Here's the thing. No one ever gets excited for low end budget cards to begin with, and I don't recall Nvidia hyping up the 1650. The RVII, on the other hand, was announced at one of the biggest shows of the year with AMD giving 3 benchmarks that showed it beating the RTX 2080. Then it comes out and is 8% slower, without all the rtx features, and suffers from all the AMD/Vega problems. At the same price. That's a disappointment beyond what the 1650 could ever put out. The 1650 feels completely shoehorned in.

Now the Rx 5700 got the best award for enthusiasts because of the powerplay mod and flashing for that 10% boost to performance to match 5700XT levels while consuming Rx Fury levels of energy. That's silly considering that most gpus can overclock to ~10% performance uplift using whatever overclocking software you choose. They shouldn't get an award for that, especially with all the Navi driver bugs.

Edit: I just thought of something after seeing a good black friday sale. The 1650 is available in plenty of budget friendly laptops out there, with one being $600 right now.. It's the go to entry level laptop gpu, and to say it's a disappointment on the same level of the "first 7nm gaming gpu [to be discontinued]," well, that's just a lack of perspective. Having worse price to performance alone shouldn't put it on the list as AMD often has no choice to price their video cards lower to compete with Nvidia. For good reason. Expectations and hype, in my opinion, should be the deciding factor.

Finding cheap tablets that run Minecraft well is a bit tricky, and finding cheap tablets that may continue to work well for the next few years makes things a bit more difficult. I would only look for devices made after 2014 if possible. Anything before then would likely be worse than your current Samsung Galaxy Tab 3, or may not keep up with the ever more demanding games and apps in the coming years.

It's worth mentioning that there aren't many kid-friendly tablets that would be a significant upgrade from your current device. For example, the Kindle-Fire kids edition, while an excellent first tablet for kids, performs similarly to the Samsung Galaxy Tab 3 and thus wouldn't be much of an upgrade. The devices I list are meant to be possible upgrade suggestions that utilize better hardware than cheaper tablets geared towards kids. However, some of the tablets I list can make for a great family tablet, and you can find accessories and cases for some of the options that make them more durable from inevitable drops and other accidents that may occur.

---

I currently have 6 tablets listed in three different price ranges that may be slightly or significantly better than your current device. Prices are in USD and may or may not include shipping in the cost. Also, with Black Friday and other holiday deals coming up, I would keep an eye out for other good deals and price drops as well.

Under $200:

  • Amazon Fire HD 8 (2016) - $90 for "Special Offers" version (essentially advertisements), $105 for version without Special Offers. While considerably cheap, it isn't too much of an upgrade over the Samsung Galaxy Tab 3, though it's still a good option. However, one major drawback is that this tablet does not come with the Google Play store, but instead uses the Amazon app store meaning all apps will have to be repurchased. It is possible to install and use the Google Play Store or Play Store apps on this tablet if you're willing to follow some technical guides.

  • Lenovo TAB 2 A10 (2015) - $150 for lowest tier model on manufacturer's site. Despite being released in 2015, this may not perform a whole lot better than your current Samsung Galaxy Tab 3.

    $200 - $300 range:

  • NVIDIA Shield Tablet K1 (2015) - $200 on manufacturer's site and Amazon. This device is comparable to the Galaxy Tab S2 in terms of performance, and is overall a very good tablet for its price.

    $300 - $400 range:

  • Huawei MediaPad M3 (2016) - Currently $300 on Amazon. Based on performance benchmarks, this is the best device on this list using some of the latest hardware for a fairly competitive price. Note that it won't ship in the US until November 21st.

  • ASUS ZenPad S 8 4GB RAM model (2015) - $300 on Amazon. While there is a $160 version with 2GB of RAM and a slower processor, reviews say the cheaper model is not great for gaming and tends to lag.

  • Samsung Galaxy Tab S2 8-inch (2015) - $350 on Amazon. Samsung previously had deals on the more expensive 9.7 inch version going for as low as $300, so it may be worth watching. This tablet is featured in some review sites as a good tablet for kids in-part because of Samsung's kids-mode feature.

Edit 1: added Asus ZenPad and Nvidia Shield tablet recommendations.

Edit 2: updated the link for the Samsung Galaxy Tab A to include the price-cut model.

Edit 3: added Amazon Fire HD 8.

Edit 4: Removed the Samsung Galaxy Tab A as nearly every device in the list outperforms it for the same price or less, making it a poor deal.

    ---

Sorry if this is an overwhelming amount of information to take in. If you have any other questions, feel free to reply! Also, if any other users have good deals or devices they want to mention, please do!

PSA: Amazon Prime Day is fast approaching. There are so many options for forwarding and some have promos for Prime Day starting already.

Also PSA: the local distributors are all ripping you off and offer dumster-fire tier customer service and warranties. Don't support them till they stop (and ignore their puppet accounts that will reply with FUD). Do the math yourself on forwarding costs, the big Prime Day price discounts (check camelcamelcamel for the actual lowest price on items) and amazing Amazon customer service vs buying locally and getting shit-tier customer support the local distributors. The exception to this is cell phones, the US sucks for this if you want dual sims, no bloat or any kind of modern cell phone experience. Europe is much better and there are forwarders who offer EU addresses, but forwarding is overall more expensive from Europe. Make sure you choose a forwarder who has been around for a while and has people on social media reporting good experiences (there are crappy/rip off forwarders now). I will not recommend any particular service as they all have negatives and positives and I am not interested in advertising for any of them.

I posted a lengthy price calculation on a post by a guy who got ripped off buying a P145,000 laptop on Lazada from the official seller (which is just a local distributor) so you can see what that looks like:

>Let me pose the question to you: have you checked out Shippingcart, Jinio, POBox, Johnny Air, etc? How much would that laptop be if you bought it on Amazon? Forget putting it on Camelcamelcamel and waiting for the price to drop or on Black Friday/Prime Day or something, just retail price and bought the laptop today? Lets find out.

&gt;So I dont know what model you tried to buy but you said ROG. See [this model at Amazon](https://www.amazon.com/gp/offer-listing/B07G5Z9H8R/ref=dp_olp_all_mbc?ie=UTF8&amp;amp;condition=all) (its the Amazon Choice model). Right now its $1299.99 sold by Amazon itself (best seller to buy big ticket items you will import): https://imgur.com/a/eeKVxhV. <br /> <br /> &amp;gt;So there is tax of $126.75 if you ship it to Jinio (Connecticut). That is: P67,314.13 + P6563.18 = P73877.31. But then you've got shipping. This is really hard to calculate depending on how you ship (sea or air) and which company you use (I use 8 different forwarding companies these days). I air shipped 2 laptops and a few other things 6-7 months ago via Shippingcart with their 12lbs 15% off promo and it looks like I paid about $58 per laptop. <br /> <br /> &amp;gt;So, P3003.27 + P73877.31 = P76880.58. Thats right, a little over half what you paid OP. And you get that sweet Amazon customer service.

&gt;But wait, what if something went wrong in shipment? So this is Amazon itself you bought from. If you don't know what this means, this is the company that is giving refunds for Huawei phones bought 1 year ago (as per people on /r/Android). Ok so say you have to send it back to Amazon. This is a PIA but LBC is one of the cheaper options for this and I can tell you it costs around P7000 to send a laptop back to Amazon or Best Buy (I`ve done it to both). Then you have to pay to forward it back to you here in the Philippines.

&gt; So, P7000+ P3003.27 + P76880.58 = P84180.85. Yep, even if you have to replace a broken laptop (or received a switch instead of a laptop) its still about 60% the price you paid.

What about an ASUS ROG Strix? Although it is heavier than the macbook (4.9lbs instead of 4.46lbs) it is way more powerful as it has a GTX 1060 and an i7 6700HQ inside. You will have no probably when it comes to 1080p gaming on this laptop, since it has a full desktop GTX 1060 included. However, the battery life maybe an issue and you may need to plug it in often.

If you want a laptop that has a longer battery life, then I would recommend Razer Blade It has the almost same exact spec, and lighter than the ASUS ROG, but it would be more expensive and might be hotter when running games.

u/techstar2000 · 8 pointsr/LaptopDeals

I would go for something like this G5587-5859BLK-PUS G5 if looks and performance are important to me.

u/kingdom18 · 7 pointsr/PickAnAndroidForMe

There's the Nvidia Shield Tablet, regarded as one of the best android tablets released in the last few years. Only $200 new, half the price of an iPad mini, you could probably save a bit and get one used. 8-inch display, full HD, 16GB storage with an SD slot, 2GB of RAM with their K1 processor so it would work great with Minecraft and anything else. https://www.amazon.com/NVIDIA-SHIELD-K1-Tablet-Black/dp/B0171BS9CG/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&amp;amp;qid=1482420048&amp;amp;sr=8-1&amp;amp;keywords=shield+k1 Only thing is it doesn't come with a charger, but most people have some extra micro USB cables laying around.

u/blueteak · 7 pointsr/Vive

Getting really close, I got one of them for a recent trip and it works great for VR on the go :)

u/xxkid123 · 6 pointsr/SuggestALaptop

What games are you going to be playing?

Actually nevermind, this is the best new gaming laptop you can get in this price range:
https://www.amazon.com/Dell-Inspiron-5000-Gaming-Laptop/dp/B06XFG7157/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&amp;amp;qid=1523978923&amp;amp;sr=8-3&amp;amp;keywords=1050+laptop

Or in general, an i5 HQ and a gtx1050 with 8g of ram. Frankly at $600 there's not much you can do, either the games you want run, or they don't. You would need to jump up to $850 to get an i7 and a 1050ti, which should handle most games at medium-high, and $1050 to get an i7 and a 1060, which will handle just about anything. Then if you want portability you'll need to jump up to the $2000 range for something semi portable and capable of gaming.

You may have more luck trying /r/hardwareswap, Craigslist, and the secondhand market in general.

You will want to spend $40-60 to get a second stick of ddr4 to run in dual channel. I highly recommend the second hand market for this, ram usually lasts for ever so second hand ram is rarely an issue.

u/Ultimate_E · 6 pointsr/androidtablets

get a nvidia shield k1 and call it a day. u really can't go wrong for $200

The Lenovo y50 would be ideal, but it is a little over your hard limit.

here is a list I put together of some gaming laptops. The 7th option down is a Lenovo Y40 and it would provide the best situation for your type of work. Good battery life, decent gaming performance, portability, etc.

u/HollywoodUpstairs · 6 pointsr/medicalschool

If the rest of your devices live in the Apple ecosystem, the iPad mini is a great device. If you prefer to have the same 7-8" form factor in an Android device, I love my NVIDIA Shield K1. Unfortunately, it's sometimes difficult to find it in stock. The new Huawei Mediapad M3 is another 8" Android device that's getting very solid review.

u/elliottdmann · 6 pointsr/computers

Probably something like this: Dell Gaming Laptop G5587-5859BLK-PUS G5 - 15.6" LED Anti-Glare Display - 8th Gen Intel i5 Processor - 8GB Memory - 128GB SSD+1TB HDD - NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1060 6GB, Licorice https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07CD3MRZD/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_SWS0CbS3MHPBA.

For your budget, a laptop with a GTX 1060 6GB graphics card is likely the best you can find. The RAM and SSD could be of greater capacity; however, those things are generally simple to upgrade later when your budget allows.

Straight from Dave Lee's review on YouTube, the ASUS Zephyrus S GX531GS is a great fit. It has no overheating issues. It has:

  • i7-8750H 6-core processor

  • 16 GB of RAM

  • 512 GB SSD storage

  • 1080p 144Hz 15.6" display

  • GTX 1070 8 GB Max-Q graphics card

  • Weight of 4.6lbs

The laptop runs Windows 10 Home. The laptop will be able to run recent games on high settings to max.

I'm not too sure about the upgradability (not exactly the best w/ laptops) but I found this Lenovo Ideapad Flex the other day. 3500U, 8GB DDR4, 256GB NVMe, 1080p. Can fold up into a tablet and comes with a pen for the display. I think it came to around $560 with tax.

There are gaming laptops across the spectrum from $500 up to $2300. While filling out the sidebar form would yield the best recommendation, the Asus N550JK is honestly the best pick at $1000. The Nvidia GeForce 850M is a mid-range card that should do well for most things, and the laptop itself is a solid piece of metal. Definitely the best thousand-dollar laptop on the market (at the price of minimal portability).

$500 : Acer Aspire E5 571G : Very low end. Not great perfomance.
$750 : Lenovo Y40 : Surprisingly good performance and a good budget pick as the little brother to the Y50.
$1000 : Asus N550JK : Best Value or whatever
$1250 : Asus UX 303LN : Starting to get much better portability in exchange for some performance.
$1500 : Gigabyte P34Gv2 : Best laptop that combines portability and power in exchange for a terrible (4 hrs) battery.

Above this are the Razer Blades and MSI GT lines. I know nothing of these realms besides their superiority.

u/CyberJeeves · 5 pointsr/SuggestALaptop

Neither of those laptops are ideal. If you provided the games you'd like to play, it would help everyone understand your performance needs. For a general purpose Ultrabook, the soon-to-be-released ASUS UX303LN-DB71T would be a much better choice. It comes with:

  • i7 4510U dual core processor
  • 12 GB ram
  • 256GB SSD
  • GT 840M dedicated GPU w/ 2GB DDR3 memory
  • 3200 x 1800 QHD 13.3" display
  • probably around 6 hours of battery life
  • 3.2 pounds / 0.7” thick

Its dedicated GPU would be helpful for those light gaming needs, and it costs less than the Samsung for better specs.
u/TheNovelNovelty · 5 pointsr/laptops

[Thin and light (for a gaming laptop) with GTX 1060 , i7-6700HQ, 16Gigs of RAM and a free m.2 slot to upgrade later if you want an SSD for $1400] (https://www.amazon.com/Asus-GL702VM-DB71-17-3-Inch-i7-6700HQ-7200RPM/dp/B01KB0WJ1G/ref=sr_1_4?s=pc&amp;amp;ie=UTF8&amp;amp;qid=1478456137&amp;amp;sr=1-4&amp;amp;keywords=gtx%2B1060%2Blaptop&amp;amp;th=1)

I'd recommend if don't choose this laptop, at least go for a GTX 10-series (1060, 1070, 1080). They perform FAR better than the 9-series for less money and less power consumption for their performance.

u/CrookedStubby15 · 5 pointsr/pcmasterrace

I would go for a laptop with a gtx 1060. The performance increase is very noticeable.

This one is slightly above your budget, but totally worth it IMO.

u/LonerIM2 · 5 pointsr/SuggestALaptop

I wouldn't wait for black friday for this budget, a new laptop with the new GPU is unlikely to drop on Black Friday, and I would recommend this ROG Strix GL502VM because it has a lot of what you need, it comes with 1060 GPU which is as "future prof" as you can get for this budget, and it offers great value as it can run most new games on medium to high settings with high FPs, it also has the other specs to supports it like quad core i7, has more than enough ram for smooth multi tasking, USB type C, advertised 5 hour of battery life with light usage, and light for a gaming laptop at 4.8 lbs and it fits well inside your budget.

u/Allhailhaels · 5 pointsr/thesims

Idk your budget, but something that has at the minimum an Intel Core i3 processor with Intel Integrated graphics card and 4GB Ram. This would go for about $300-$400 dollars, would be able to play the Sims 4 at very low settings and the Sims 2 Ultimate Collection at comfortable settings/smooth gameplay.

If you can spare some more money, ideally you should get an Intel Core i5 or i7 processor, preferably a 6/7/8th generation (generation indicated by the first of number that follows, so for example I have an i5 6200U processor). 8GB+ RAM (more the better) is all suggested. The processors I just mentioned will suit the game fine for medium/high settings but for ultra settings look for one of the i5/i7 with “HQ” at the end. The difference between a processor ending is that 6/7th gen and below processors that end with U are only “dual core” while HQ means “quad core”. If you don’t have the money to grab a quad core/HQ that’s ok, but it leads to my next point.

If you can’t get an HQ processor, try to at least get a U processor accompanied by a dedicated graphics card! Some dgpu’s in a decent price range that work well for sims are the Nvidia GeForce 940m, or MX150 made by the same company! Ultra settings could benefit from a Nvidia GeForce GTX1050 or above (1050,1060,1070,1080). That’s basically it!

The first option is only recommended if you’re on a tight budget. You can get more bang for your buck if you go for a desktop, ie. better processor/graphics card for less money but you use the portability factor. I like to game in bed and also have college to worry about so I need my machine to be portable.

Here are some good laptop choices

If you’re on a really tight budget (ie. first option):
Acer Aspire E 15 E5-575-33BM 15.6-Inch FHD Notebook (Intel Core i3-7100U 7th Generation , 4GB DDR4, 1TB 5400RPM HD, Intel HD Graphics 620, Windows 10 Home), Obsidian Black https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01K1IO3QW/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_oHeJAb87X98XF

Have a bit more money to spare:
Acer Aspire E 15, 15.6" Full HD, 8th Gen Intel Core i5-8250U, GeForce MX150, 8GB RAM Memory, 256GB SSD, E5-576G-5762 https://www.amazon.com/dp/B075FLBJV7/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_nIeJAbZFVCXT4

Other pricier ($600+) but better choices:
Dell Inspiron 15 5000 5577 Gaming Laptop - (15.6" FHD (1920x1080), Intel Quad-Core i5-7300HQ, 1TB HDD, 8GB DDR4, NVIDIA GTX 1050 4GB, Windows 10 - Black) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B06XFG7157/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_iJeJAbCQ911ZA

I'd go for something with an Intel 4th-6th gen i3/i5 CPU, 8GB of RAM and a relatively roomy SSD (&gt;250GB).

You don't really need a laptop with a dedicated GPU, intel integrated graphics post 4th gen is more than enough for running DA:O

Other than that maybe go for a large and nice screen?

Personally I'd maybe go for this one: https://amzn.com/B01CGGOUJM
Extremely good CPU (i5, 6th gen), Big SSD (256GB), 8GB of RAM and the display is 1080p.

This is a lot of computer for your money and it's definitely worth it. I did look at some of the cheaper ones, but seeing as you're also going to be using it for school and such, I'm thinking you're going to want to invest a teeny bit more. Trust me, I've worked with a lot of cheap laptops and the low price is almost never worth it. The cheaper ones are going to last a couple of years before they become outdated, but the one I suggested is going to last a lot longer (as long as you're careful with it).

If you got any opinions/wishes/questions just mention them and I'll do my best to help you ;-)

The Zenbook is awesome! However, based on how demanding some of the programs she will be running, can be, I RECOMMEND she gets the 15 inches version that has a quad core processor rather than a dual core... It also has more memory. I am referring to this ASUS ZenBook Pro UX501VW

If you want slim with some ability to play games you should think about this. http://www.amazon.com/Zenbook-UX303LN-DB71T-Quad-HD-Display-Touchscreen/dp/B00KTL21RA

I just recently bought this bad boy and while its slimmer than a macbook pro, it also has a higher resolution screen and a gt 840m which is by no means a power house but I can still play Dota 2 at 1600x900 at a silky 60fps. It even plays other games like Titanfall, FIFA, and Cities: Skyline at lower resolutions.

u/balloonanimalfarm · 4 pointsr/AskProgramming

I don't know of any laptop you'd want to keep for 6-7 years. You'd be better off buying a $1000 laptop every 3 years. Even at that price point you can get excellent machines and you skip the problem of having outdated hardware. Take a look at this Zenbook. Computers today have much better SSDs, faster RAM, better peripherals, more power efficient CPUs and better GPUs than those 2-3 years ago.

You are on the right track with those two you mentioned; exactly the two I would have thrown out to you if you are running away from the gaming appearance. The XPS has a little better display than this NITRO but the Nitro has a much better graphics card which is crucial in especially high level CAD tasks...The Nitro also has a bigger storage.

u/poopyheadthrowaway · 4 pointsr/laptops

Portability + power is a bit of an issue. That said, here are some sub-$1500 suggestions from Amazon:

u/audigex · 4 pointsr/CitiesSkylines

This, but minus 1TB of storage and prioritize the SSD.

SSDs are the single best upgrade for loading times (which in CS can get quite long with lots of mods and assets), and general "snappiness" of the machine.

1TB is over-kill for most, and if you run low on storage for photos etc you can easily buy an external HDD or NAS for not very much money at all.

A 256GB SSD will do the job just fine for Cities Skylines, a couple of other games, and some documents, but 500GB is more comfortable if you want to install other large games. More than that is un-necessary unless you want to store a large number of videos too.

Something like this would be ideal for $900.

Or this for a little less money for $800. It will perform a little worse for CS (slightly worse CPU), a little better in most other games (better graphics card), and has less storage, but is cheaper.

And at $700, this is the cheapest I'd probably bother with, as you start to lose a little too much performance when you drop significantly below this level.

If the above is too expensive, though, dropping the SSD can get you this which is a bit of a compromise but should still run CS well enough and is hard to argue with at $525

Edit: Although I'll add that I'm not American and just grabbed these for example purposes: you may be able to find better deals for comparable specifications.

u/s3ph · 4 pointsr/laptops

What made you pick those two units? The first one is using a 6th generation processor.

What do you think of something like this? https://www.amazon.com/Dell-Inspiron-Gaming-i5577-7359BLK-PUS-Chassis/dp/B06XFGDD8P

It has better specs than the ones you've linked for a good price.

u/Whereyouatm8 · 4 pointsr/wow

I don't know how tight your budget might be, but adding $80 more you can get this which has a much better graphics card, in fact the laptop I linked has a GTX 1050 which pulls double the frames than the one you linked. If you got another 80$ I'd go with the one I linked, It's on sale now hence the lower price.

u/Michiganders · 4 pointsr/SuggestALaptop

My best suggestion would be the Dell Inspiron 7559 for $800 because it has a good mix of power and battery life. You could look into some laptops with new pascal graphics, but all will have very poor battery, rarely lasting over 4 hours. The dell comes with a quad core i7-6700HQ processor, 8gb of ram and a 1TB HDD. It has a GTX 960M graphics card which will work just fine for light and moderate gaming. It has a full 1080p IPS display, a long battery life (advertised up to 10 hours), and a white backlit keyboard.

There is also another RAM slot and another storage slot if you would like to upgrade either in the future.

If you want something that will really future-proof you though, maybe look into the ASUS ROG STRIX for $1250, which has one of the largest batteries of any laptop with a GTX 1060. It's specs include a quad core i7-6700HQ processor, 16gb of ram and a 1TB HDD. It's GTX 1060 graphics card is extremely powerful and will meet any gaming needs you have. Its battery is decent and advertised up to 5 hours.

u/Jinh0o · 4 pointsr/SuggestALaptop

I guess you can wait for bf, since it isnt far from now. 1500 should get you a pretty decent gaming laptop with the gtx 1060. I recommend the Asus GL series. The one with the 1060 should be around 1300 if I'm not mistaken. It's a slim 15 inch laptop that should be able to run everything you've listed at a very good fps on the highest settings(native 1080p).

If you want something smaller in size for portability, look at the msi 14 inch laptop .

Some of these laptops are already on sale.

If you're on a budget, I just picked up this laptop and definitely recommend it. I did a lot of research beforehand and it's the best thing out there in this price range. It's running a Ryzen 5 CPU, which means it's got some impressive graphics capability for your CAD work. Plus it's a 2-in-1 and pretty light, so it's also great for note taking in class.

Another major benefit, especially if you're engineering and have some technical skills, is that the RAM, battery, and SSD are user upgradeable, which means you'll be able to keep this laptop running strong for years with a couple cheap upgrades when it starts to slow down.

It's not as fancy as other laptops out there, the build quality is where they had to make some compromises. Plastic body, speakers arent amazing, not the best screen out there, and the battery life is about 5-6 hours. But it's Lenovo, so it's still pretty solid, the keyboard feels pretty good and the trackpad is as good as anything out there under about $900.

Overall there's nothing near this powerful out there at this price range, especially if the 2-in-1 touch screen matters to you. But whatever you choose, I would definitely recommend something with a discrete graphics card or an AMD Ryzen processor like this one if you're going to be doing graphics intensive work like CAD.

**note: if you'll be doing a ton of MATLAB however, MATLAB is optimized for Intel and runs a lot slower on AMD processors, so that may also be something to consider.

u/GuyYoureThinkingOf · 4 pointsr/LaptopDeals

This is not a sale - it's been this price for most of the time that it's been listed on amazon: https://camelcamelcamel.com/Lenovo-Convertible-Touchscreen-Processor-Graphics/product/B07PB5M8DS

u/markleenct1 · 4 pointsr/thesims

At least a GTX 1050, would be better if you could go for a GTX 1050 Ti. At least 8GB of ram. An i5 processor should be more than enough too, unless you're planning to play other games... but even then, it probably could get by but if it's just Sims 4 you're playing, you'll have no problem.

Other than the GTX 1050, if you're not bothered by the amount of vram, the GTX 1060 3GB is another choice. But just for The Sims 4, 3GB Vram is more than enough, but it also doesn't hurt to go for the 6GB because it's more future proof.

I currently have the GTX 1660, and it performs closely to the GTX 1070. That is another good card for a reasonable price. It also just came out this year.

Any of these specs should be able to run The Sims 4 on High/Ultra settings with most/all expansions/games/stuff packs

Your best bet is the first one

I don't know much about AMD so don't come for me sksks. But I think the RX 570 and RX 580 are close in performance to the GTX 1060/GTX 1660 and they're a lot more affordable compared to Nvidia, so you might want to look at that too.

The AMD Ryzen 3 2100 is more of a budget processor, it would play The Sims 4 fine, but if you're wanting to play other more demanding games too, look elsewhere.

1Tb HDD of space is the minimum I'd recommend. I've had The Sims 4 on an HDD before eventually switching it to my SSD and I haven't noticed much of a loading time difference, so it probably doesn't matter. But SSD would've made a huge difference in The Sims 3.

If it helps, these are my specs: it runs like a dream, and mind you I have like 20gb of CC.

Intel i7-8700 3.2GHz

16GB Ram

120GB SSD + 1TB HDD + 500GB External SSD

GeForce GTX 1660 Overclocked 6GB

I'd say it's a bit overkill *just* for The Sims 4, but I do run other games as well.

I'm not too knowledgeable, but I know a few basics. I hope that gives you somewhat of an idea. Hopefully someone who knows their stuff can chim in too :) good luck. I could be wrong in a few spots.

Alright, so, if I were going to buy a laptop I'd go with this dell: https://www.amazon.com/Dell-Gaming-Laptop-G5587-5859BLK-PUS-Anti-Glare/dp/B07CD3MRZD

It's listed for $800 on Amazon but it might be the best you're going to do in a laptop. It's hard to find a laptop much lower than that. This one, though, at least has a lot of storage. There's a 128GB boot drive and then a 1TB drive for storage (though you can install games on it if you want). When I was looking for my gaming laptop I found the folks at r/gaminglaptops to be pretty helpful. Here is some of their recommendations at various prices: https://www.reddit.com/r/GamingLaptops/comments/ca2fzv/best_gaming_laptops_of_2019/

If you want to dip down around $600 a popular choice is the Acer Aspire e15: https://www.amazon.com/Acer-Aspire-i5-8250U-GeForce-E5-576G-5762/dp/B075FLBJV7?th=1

I'm going to warn you that this isn't a powerful laptop. There are games out today that it won't run. However, for $600 I've been told that it is a solid laptop.

As for pre-built desktops it's tough to find the best deals online. One I did find was the Acer Nitro 50 for $480: https://www.microcenter.com/product/609860/nitro-50-gaming-desktop-pc

Again, not the best computer in the world, but it is solid for the price.

I would recommend finding whatever electronics stores are near you (Best Buy, etc) and look for deals. Open box deals are great, there are regular sales, and if you go regularly for a few weeks you'll likely find a solid deal.

There's one thing you're looking for: a dedicated graphics card. Every computer has "onboard" graphics that are built right into the motherboard. This is fine if you're just using a browser and word processing but not fine for games. A gaming PC needs to have a special graphics card that is added onto the motherboard. When you're looking at a computer's specs it will have a listing for "graphics." If it says something like "integrated" or "on-board" under graphics then it's not going to be for gaming. If you see something made buy Nvidia or AMD listed under graphics then you're looking at a PC made for gaming.

Let me know if you have any other questions!

You can pull the trigger, the Dell G5587-5859BLK-PUS is a solid gaming laptop to get. Its build quality is good and it can adequately cool the laptop well while gaming. The only other laptop in this price range that you could consider would be the Overpowered from Walmart which has better specs but not everyone likes a rebranded laptop from Walmart

u/SweetTomatoes · 3 pointsr/SuggestALaptop

First of all, the Razer Blade is kind of bad (to put it lightly) in terms of price:performance.

Since your budget is higher than most of the mainstream laptops, you can have almost anything (certainly much better than what Razer offers).

If money is no object, there are usually two options:

  1. Portable gaming notebooks (if you are restricted by travel especially) like the MSI GS60(GTX870M + quad core) for $1800 or the Lenovo Y50(860M + dual core) for $900.

  2. Huge, crazily powerful desktop replacements like the Asus notebooks, or the MSI ones that aren't in the GS series. I remember though that one of the MSI models is horribly flawed because it only has one fan to handle so much heat, so watch out.

The crazy notebooks are usually closer to $3000 now, but they can pack the 880M, which cannot be had in the more desirable thin form factor. Also, they can have good performance at a reasonable price. These are between a desktop and a laptop in portability, and are also somewhat cost-efficient.

It used to be that all gaming notebooks came in this massive form factor, but now the medium-high end graphics can be put in a smaller chassis, and this is almost always more desirable over the monsters that used to be. The portability sometimes comes at a premium, for example the GS60 with the 870M goes for ~1800 while you can get that performance for ~1200 in a less desirable form factor.

The Y50 is extremely cost efficient. If you want a cut-down model with a so-so processor, the Amazon model for $900 is very cost-effective. The 1080p display is pretty bad, although for the cost/performance, you can't really complain. Since your budget is described as &lt;$2000, I imagine this is not for you. There is a model with a higher resolution display that fixes the poor performance of it in that regard

Over at Lenovo's website they have all the configurations at decent prices. The second one from the left for $1129 is probably the best (though with the 1080p display). 16GB of RAM and 4GB of VRAM is unnecessary and only adds to cost. The 1TB HDD is more useful, and warrants an upgrade from the first model. The SSD is limited to 8GB from the factory, and I recommend buying your own mSATA SSD to use. The 250GB 840 evo is nice.

The 860M is technically an upper-mid range GPU, and may not perform to your expectations. Unfortunately, the next step up, the 870M, costs quite a bit to get in a portable form factor. I only know of the GS60 that manages to do this, and it typically costs $1800 (Also the Blade for $2200). This is kind of unreasonable for such a performance jump. Still, if you compare the GS60 to the Blade, you are still getting a good deal, so it's not that bad. If you expected to spend $2000, you will be well-served by the GS60 for $1800. It's basically a Blade with a lower-resolution screen for $400 less.

One thing about the GS60: It gets hot. most of the thin gaming notebooks do, but the GS60's underside on the 870M model can cause burns. It's quite cool when web browsing and such, but during gaming, you need to watch out. The palmrest is pretty cool too, even when gaming, so you just have to make sure to NEVER use it on your lap while gaming.

The Asus UX303LN is what I'd suggest. High-resolution screen, and a reasonable GPU which should be more than fast enough for SC2 and LoL. Also very pretty, though I prefer the UX301LA.

You can get an external blu-ray drive pretty cheaply - search "blu-ray usb" on Amazon, for instance.

u/squired · 3 pointsr/SuggestALaptop

I'll second that and would love to hear any recommendations as well. I came to make a thread but it looks like we're looking for the exact same thing, budget and all.

The UX303LN looks to be absolute perfect, save for that damn QHD screen! From the scaling issues to the yellow issue, I'm just really wary of it. I wish they'd just offer it in 1080/FHD. I don't even care if it is touch capable.

u/NeverRealNano · 3 pointsr/SuggestALaptop

Don't know how much that helps you, but I'm looking for a notebook and have similar requirements (specs, budget) as you have. I'm most probably going to get the new Asus Zenbook ux303ln ! (Even though here in Europe we get one with slightly different specs (FullHD screen instead of QHD screen for one))

Otherwise I would always recommend Dell! I had a few Dell laptops already and never had any serious complaints, just the price range for their XPS laptops is a little high. (And I guess it's time for a new XPS series soon)

Above you have the ASUS Republic of Gaming laptop with weighs in at just over 9lbs if you're willing to put up with that. Slightly better graphics card and more ram.

Both run Windows 8.1 if you're alright with that. As someone who plays league and some triple A titles I would probably buy the lighter one if I were carrying it around campus. The heavier asus is really a desktop replacement. Both laptops are 15.6 inches and do not unfortunately give the battery life in hours. Any other questions I'd be happy to do more research.

With the $50 saved on the first option, buying a carrying bag wouldn't break the bank. Best of luck to you.

Since Steam In-Home streaming relies on the source computer to do all the processing, the actual laptop it's being streamed to doesn't have to be all that powerful. Your primary concern for a stream laptop is going to be your network card. With that in mind, I suggest this Asus
or this Acer.

The Acer has everything the Asus has, is within .2 lbs of weight (5 pounds for either) with the addition of a dedicated graphics card. I'm more inclined to suggest the Acer as a better overall deal, since for an extra $20 you get the capability to game reasonably well on the go. The Asus, however, does have a slightly larger battery (38wH vs ~31wH on the Acer) so I would estimate you're looking at about an hour difference in favor of the Asus. Say 4-5 hours for the Acer and 5-6 for the Asus under normal usage. Not a colossal difference, but it might affect your usage plans for it. As far as Steam streaming, both have dedicated Ethernet ports- which I would absolutely prioritize over relying on WiFi. Especially if you're playing a fast-paced game like Overwatch.

ASUS's GL502VM is also the same price on sale right now, and is sleeker and I believe thinner. Looks a bit nicer too, IMHO. I had two of the ASUS GL502VS last year, which are the slightly thicker versions with the GTX 1070.

Overall, a good, solid portable gaming laptop but with Gsync battery life was crap, so keep that in mind.

If you want to step up a little bit, I'd highly recommend the Acer Aspire Nitro 15" because it looks like a business laptop, not some gaming eyesore. That means you can take it to school, work, the library, coffee shops, etc. without people judging you. Plus, it starts at $1,299 so it's not much more expensive.

Beyond that, you go up in price a bit for laptops with more metal in their builds and sleeker, thinner, lighter chassis. All of the laptops I've mentioned so far are between 5.5 and nearly 8 pounds. Not the worst thing, but noticeably heavier than thin and light ones in daily use.

Start with the new Sager NP8950, which is well under an inch thick and packs the same specs as the other laptops mentioned, in a plastic and thin metal chassis. It also has a 3 or 4 zone RGB keyboard, which some people love. At $1,499 it's right at the edge of your budget, but the thinness, weight reductions, sleeker design, better building materials, included RGB-lite keyboard, and expandable storage and RAM options make it worth it, IMO.

From there, things quickly go outside of your budget with the MSI GS63VR, Gigabyte P35 and Aero 14/15, Razer Blade, etc.

Really depends on your applications. You'll be running scripts that will be very CPU intensive and having enough RAM would help. If you're running tensorflow then having access to a GPU would improve efficiency.

When posting build threads you'd be better off asking r/buildapc or r/suggestalaptop.

I'll help in the meantime.

  1. What's your budget?

  2. Are you looking for a laptop or a desktop?

  3. What operating system are you working on?

If you're on a budget and familiar with the windows operating system, I'd recommend any laptop with an Intel i7 CPU, 8-16GB RAM with a graphics card.

The DELL XPS15 $1899 $1699 would be a good choice.

Second best would be an Asus Zenbook pro ux501. $1499 $1299

If you're a fan of mac, perhaps a lower range macbook pro [$1349]
    (https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0744MHLK4/ref=psdc_13896615011_t2_B0744N99WL) would help.

If you're really looking to make a significant investment, I'd say a desktop would be your best option. Investing in an

  • AMD Threadripper CPU

  • VEGA64 Graphics card

  • ASUS ROG (Republic of Gaming) zenith motherboard
    ]
  • 32GB RAM

would be the best. That's optimised for compute performance over gaming. If you're not into building computers you could get one built by your local computer store. However this system would be upwards of $3000-$5000. This would future proof you for the next 5 years easily.

IMO doing it with a laptop is always a bad idea. Even with this PC you should have a solid and reliable 1080p stream for $150, and get more power than almost any laptop CPU:
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01CV9G1BO/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_b8FADb1DJ5SXW

Just wire Ethernet to it, install Team Viewer so that you can remotely connect to it if there's any problems with your stream (even from your phone), and you'll be good to go

If I was looking to get a gaming laptop I'd want one with a GTX 1060, unfortunately you'd be looking at $1399 for the cheapest one, the ASUS GL502VM, it does look pretty good though, with an IPS gsync monitor.
If that's too much I'd lurk Slickdeals for a few days and see if any with the 1060 go on sale.

u/ThatGuyWithTheText · 3 pointsr/laptops

Don't consider buying apple. They no longer priorities their computer brand and it really shows. That being said, for 1200 you should NOT buy any computer that sports a 900 series card. Ram and harddrive space can (typically) be upgraded later. But graphic cards are on for good and you can never upgrade/replace them in laptops.

For 200 more you can pick up this model which includes a 1060 (which will lead to less heat and futureproof you for years to come)
https://www.amazon.com/Eluktronics-P650RP6-Premium-Gaming-Laptop/dp/B01KZ6BKL6/ref=sr_1_1?s=pc&amp;amp;ie=UTF8&amp;amp;qid=1487958278&amp;amp;sr=1-1&amp;amp;keywords=Eluktronics++1060

Hi OP I recommend the ROG Asus Strix

1500$ was your limit and the strix is nice.

u/DLDude · 3 pointsr/AskEngineers

PC laptops are not garbage.

Think of it this way... if you want a MBP with a dedicated graphic card (for CAD stuff), you're going to pay $1500+. Now look at PC's in that range! You can get outstanding PC's for $1500.

Personally I am a mechE who designs toys. I use Solidworks on my Asus UX303ub (http://www.amazon.com/ZenBook-UX303UB-13-3-Inch-Touchscreen-Discrete/dp/B014VHVZFQ/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&amp;amp;qid=1452274269&amp;amp;sr=8-1&amp;amp;keywords=asus+zenbook+ux303) It is crazy good. Built solid. I would argue it's BETTER than a MBP. It will cost you $2500 for the same specs in a MBP 15". In fact, I've had Asus Zenbooks for the last 4 years and they have always served me well (The last one I had, the power jack broke, and I just decided to upgrade rather than a $100 fix).

Don't buy into the Apple bullshit. People compare apples to oranges and I think that doesn't do credit to the high-end PC lineup. The Dell XPS is also a really nice machine.

u/acting_actuary · 3 pointsr/laptops

Welcome! I could have gotten a bad unit, but it was enough of a bad experience for me to go back to a more reputable brand (in my experience). Also, the keyboard was a little loud to type on.

If you're curious this is what I ended up getting and I love it. I'd prefer a matte screen to prevent glare, but the touch screen does come in handy sometimes.

UX303UA for $850. It just went back up recently coming from $799. For $350 more you could get the UB which has double Memory, +4GB ram, dedicated GPU, and a jump from an i5 to an i7.

There is also the UX305 which is an older edition that only comes in gold. Not worth it IMO if you could get an even better one for $100 more.

A few good, powerful laptops that are less than $1000 are the MSI GL 62, the Dell Inspiron 7559, and the Lenovo Y700. They all have the latest i7 processors, a 960m, 8 GB of ran, and weight about 5-6 lbs. The Lenovo and MSI have a 1 TB 5400 rpm HDD, and the Dell has a 1 TB 5400 rpm SSHD with 8 GB SSD cache, making a bit faster, possibly. The Lenovo and Dell have IPS displays, while the MSI has a TN one. The Dell also has a 4 GB version of the 960m while the others only have the 2 GB version.

If you want a 17 in laptop that is also under $1000 or more ram, there is this Asus laptop. It’s specs are similar to the other suggested, but has 16 GB of ram instead of 8 GB.

u/munchiesnOOb · 3 pointsr/Warthunder

I wouldn't expect spectacular performance, comparing this to my pc.

That pc will play it, but not on super high graphics. I have some settings turned up like track marks and effects, and textures are up rather high, but everything else is stripped down to base and I literally never have a frame drop, ever, except on custom battles when someone spawns in a big destroyer or cruiser with a shitload of AA batteries that start opening up with infinite ammo, and even then it only dips to 30 minimum. The screen size is the biggest thing I'd worry about, as my 16x9 1080p 17 inch monitor is already starting to show it's obsolescence as distant targets are blobs of pixels.

TL;DR Don't expect perfect framerate but it will work. Get an external fan.

u/TheMekaUltra · 3 pointsr/SuggestALaptop

With a budget of 1000$ I would recommend to go for a desktop if possible, since most gaming laptops around that budget will become outdated rather sooner than later. Now if it's not an option to get a desktop I could recommend this one

https://www.amazon.com/Dell-Inspiron-i7559-2512BLK-Generation-GeForce/dp/B015PYZ0J6

Its equipped with an i7, gtx 960m and 8gb of ram which should run most games fine at low-medium settings and it's only 850$

Now that one is a 15.6" so its more portable so a bit smaller (still really comfortable to play on trust me) but if you rather have a bit of a bigger screen you can get this one

https://www.amazon.com/GL752VW-DH71-17-3-inch-GTX960M-Graphic-Windows/dp/B01578ZK9A

This one comes with almost the same specs, only with double the RAM (16gb) which is also a great thing since 8gb is like the standard in gaming nowadays so if you have double that you should be more than fine. (don't get me wrong you won't run games much better because of the double ram, it'll just allow you to run more processes at the same time)
Also it costs 995$ so it's on the edge of your budget, without counting delivery costs so yea you'll have to look that up.

u/dandeliondreamer · 3 pointsr/TagProIRL

Oh, you could get an absolute beast for that price. Depends on your requirements too. The Dell XPS 15 9550 is $1,200. The Dell Inspiron i7559-763BLK has NVIDIA GeForce GTX 960M graphics (same as the XPS 15), which would play pretty much any game right now at max settings and is only $800. The ASUS ROG GL752VW-DH71 has the same graphics card but a bigger screen, if that's your thing, and has 16GB RAM (overkill IMO, but the other two have 8GB).

I don't know man, depends on what you want and what you are using it for more specifically. Battery power? Slim design for portability? Ect...

I would recommend this Dell laptop ($750 on amazon right now). It is a newer version of the laptop that I have and it is great for just about everything you would want to do on a laptop. Mine runs all the newest games on medium @ 60 FPS and has more than enough horsepower for whatever software I need. One thing though, I would recommend getting the one with the SSD as the 5400 RPM HDDs that you find in laptops are to slow to run Windows 10 well. It has an empty 2.5 inch hard drive bay if you need to add more storage later and the process is incredibly simple.

u/Jebobek · 3 pointsr/laptops

If you're going to go beyond League/Dota and pull off something like Overwatch I'd suggest a budget gaming laptop: Dell Inspiron 15.6" Gaming Laptop (7th Gen Intel Core i5, 8 GB RAM, 256GB SSD, NVIDIA GTX 1050) (i5577-5335BLK-PUS)

Edit: If you want to push your budget go for the Lenovo Legion Y520 with the GTX 1050ti

u/Koeru · 3 pointsr/pcmasterrace

You aren't going to be able to run things on Ultra 60fps with a laptop less than $700. Maybe you could if you get a used laptop, but nothing new. The best I can find is this dell (which is about $150 over budget) and even then you will be getting like 40fps average on ultra, mayyyyybe 50-60 on high.

EDIT: this dell will have less performance, (1050 vs. ti) but is cheaper

u/zebrastripe665 · 3 pointsr/gaming

You may already know this, but if you don't need a laptop then buying a gaming desktop will be a way better deal. Building it yourself will be the best deal. It's a little intimidating, until you realize there are a ton of YouTube guides and a subreddits dedicated to helping people put together a having desktop. Otherwise, Reddit can point you to some good prebuilt systems.

For a laptop recommendation, try to find this one with the 1050 ti graphics card. The 1050 ti is noticeably better than the 1050:

When you say "processing pictures and making videos" I'm assuming that you will be editing hi res photos and video. You will still need a decent GPU to handle that as integrated graphic are shit, unless you go for an AMD-based system.

Dell has 3 laptop product lines that would fulfill your needs.

XPS - this is their premium line that will have the best display quality, build quality, and internals. However, that gets a bit expensive. A used 9560 should fit in your price range, though would be pushing it if your country has a VAT and shipping costs.

Precision - this is dell's workhorse. It's a professional laptop made for doing videocediting, CAD work, etc. However, these too are a bit expensive, but you can find used or refurbished machines on ebay well within your price point. Check out the 2016 and 2017 models.

G3/5 g this is their gaming line. They will have not so good build quality, clunky, shit battery, but will do the job as all of the frills will be sacrificed for the specs. I'm in the US so this is a US link but will point you in the right direction. Its $800, has an 8th gen i5 processor (its quad core and the i7 only gives a slight boost that isn't worth the upgrade) and a gtx1060 that can handle video editing fairly well, unless you're dealing with raw 4k video. The display isn't the best. It's mostly made of plastic and weighs about 5 lbs (3.5-4kg) and the battery life isnt good. However, it will do what you need it to do.

Since you're paying for a new laptop that has a thunderbolt3 port (the Y530 doesn't have that, a decent 15" would be around $1000) + eGPU (w/enclosure+gpu can go for ~$500) you're getting close to ASUS Zephyrus range (~$1800). Amazon link

For $300 more you get a 144hz screen, 1070 MaxQ, decent thermals, decent cpu, nvme ssd etc.

It also depends on the games you want to play. If you can do without VR then you'll have cheaper options with 1050/1060 laptops without bothering with the eGPU or something that costs $1300+.

Perhaps the following 14" Lenovo Flex 14 2-in-1 with an AMD Ryzen 5 3500u APU, 1080p touchscreen and pen included. It also comes with 8GB of RAM and 256GB PCie NVMe SSD. At least according to the specs Amazon lists, the laptop weighs in at 3.52lbs so that means it will have a small batter (typically the heaviest component in a laptop). However, you have to make the ultimate sacrifice to spend less than $600.

The vega 8 most likely will be enough for inventor. At 730 price tag, this is a great option if you also want to take notes using your laptop.

u/TheBoed9000 · 2 pointsr/SuggestALaptop

I recently picked up this Lenovo from Amazon. Typing on it right now. It's my work laptop/living room "iPad" all in one. Pen included in purchase. Can even take notes on it if I feel the need (pen + one note).

Limitations are the SSD - it's super fast, but 250gb isn't a lot of storage - and the RAM. The RAM is actually 4gb soldered on for the Vega integrated graphics, and a 4gb removable; so you can actually upgrade it. I'll probably throw in an 8gb from my retiring gaming laptop when I upgrade the SSD.

Do not regret spending the money at all.

u/UsePreparationH · 2 pointsr/LaptopDeals

Personally I would just do the crucial one since it is $1 cheaper from Amazon and the g.skill one should run at the same latency/timings once installed. If it doesn't, playing around in the BIOS may not be fun for some people.

This review also used the crucial ram for the upgrade. It does note you need a T5 screwdriver.

This 2 in 1 is a pretty good deal, it was just feature in a linus tech tips video with a lot of praise. It's got Vega 8 graphics so it can handle some light gaming too.

It's not under $500, but honestly anything under that isn't worth getting.

Well I’ve seen the asus tuf laptops with a 3550h and GTX 1650 for as low as £650 here in the U.K. bundled with a game and controller now.

They’re currently $699 without a deal on amazon US.

So there is a similar laptop on amazon for $699. The laptop listed here has no information about the refresh rate on the screen. The only difference between this laptop and the one on amazon is the CPU. the R7-3750H is only 5% faster than the R5-3550H according to userbenchmark.com. Honestly, at 720p lowest settings you MIIIGHT be able to get 30+ frames. Mayyyyyyybe at 1080p.

But really, if you want to game on a laptop just grab a last-gen gaming PC (HP Omen, Lenovo Y series, Acer Nitro series) with a 1050 ti or even 1060 and it will absolutely blow the laptop away. I'm talking 60fps+ at 1080p with medium-high settings, probably 3x-6x the performance and you'd probably spend a few hundred less.

The Laptop just isn't meant to be a gaming PC. The Surface keynote even highlighted that the custom AMD tuning was for 'professional workloads' and not so much gaming.

Hey! So you’re looking for around a $1000 laptop with a 1050 or higher, most likely with 16Gb of DDR4 Ram, and i7- 8750H would be great, with some nice looks. generally Dell has the least in your face “IM A GAMING LAPTOP” looks so this list may have a couple

There are some options around that price point, but everylaptop with have different tradeoffs between Heat, Size, Looks, Power, Battery life, etc.

  1. $800 Dell Inspiron G5587-5859BLK-PUS I’m including this one mainly because the price caught my eye. Specs: i5 8300H, 8GB DDR4 Ram, 128Gb SSD + 1Tb HDD, GeForce GTX 1060 -6gb.

  2. $1265 Dell 7855 G7 15 this laptop is a little more expensive, but it one of the sleeker looking laptops for gaming. Specs: i7-8750H, 512 SSD, 16Gb DDR4, GeForce GTX 1060 6Gb. (Ps, I saw an add for this at $1050, so maybe there is a better deal than on amazon)

  3. $1050 2019 Dell G3 keeping with Dell this is the generation before the one above, main difference will be the downgrade from a 1060 -&gt; 1050 Ti. Specs: i7-8750h, 512SSD, + 1tb HDD, 16Gb DDR4, GTX 1050 ti

  4. $1050 Acer Spin 5 This one is an interesting one, because it can also convert into a tablet, not a common feature for gaming laptops. It is fairly nicer looking, but also only has a HDD drive which is much slower than an SSD, however it also is at a reduced price at the moment Specs: i7-8550U, GeForce GTX 1050, 8GB DDR4, 1Tb HDD

I hope one of these caught your eyes. Often what each person values in a laptop varies greatly, so just keep looking and you’ll find something
u/JoshJosherMan · 2 pointsr/oculus

I'm sorry but in what fucking world are these the "cheapest" laptops you can buy for VR? What about all the laptops under $1000 with a 1060 inside? Just a quick Amazon search shows this Dell G5 for $799 shipped and sold by Amazon or over on Newegg they have this Asus for $699. C'mon this article is laughable merely for the fact that the title talks about cheapest laptops and some of the laptops list their only cons as "price".

Yes, ideally you want a desktop. I however was in your boat about a year and a half ago when I purchased this bad boy. I got the 1TB hard drive with a smaller SSD. There is a slot for an extra stick of RAM, super easy to install, and same if you want to get one without the SSD so you can put an even bigger one in there after purchase. I only needed the RAM when I started playing PUBG. This computer is great, plays Overwatch and DOOM on ultra. I have yet to have trouble playing a game, even Witcher 3 on ultra runs smooth. This is a great little laptop. It does need to stay plugged in though.

Question: What are the specs/model of your current PC? How old is it?

Your laptop crashing could simply be a software issue. If you are running the default Windows installation a complete reinstall might be a good option. If your PC has Windows 10 (and was upgraded from Win 7/8/8.1) then you can use the Media Creation Tool to get Windows reinstall media... without any bloatware.

---

This PC should work (the specs here are exactly what you want), but I personally do not recommend HP. The few HP notebooks I've used have been of poor design. The biggest problem with them is usually badly designed cooling and layout. This is a problem as video editing can heat up the machine, quite easily.

I personally recommend Asus and Dell machine. As my experience with them has been solid from a hardware perspective (in fact I'm typing this on an Asus N550JK from 2014). In the $800 range though it's a little problematic, unless you find some good deals. (You might want to look at the Inspiron 15 Dell is selling right now).

This Dell Inspiron would be a decent choice. i5-6300HQ, 960M, 8GB RAM, and 256GB SSD for $750. Or the current gen equivalent for $50 more.

Dell has a pretty good Linux support track record, and some of their laptops (but not this one) officially support Linux.

u/Johnnyallstar · 2 pointsr/gaming

Unless you need real CPU horsepower for video/3d rendering, you can get by with an i5. If your major needs the aforementioned, you might want to bump up to an i7.

As for a gpu, I think a GTX 940 is the absolute bottom, while a 1050 or 1050ti is the real target, because they are very good for the price point. Make sure you have at least 8 GB of RAM. 4 isn't enough for modern gaming.

Also, most gaming laptops at this price point will be 15.6". If you want a 17.1" you will probably have to pony up a bit more, though you lose some portability. Up to you.

Also, some gaming rigs at that price point need to have an additional storage hard drive bought, else you'll be gimped to only 256GB of space. I'll give you a few examples of decent laptops, and note if it needs anything. You should look around, though. Examine options.

ASUS FX502VM Is a good laptop at the price point. Has a GREAT gpu for gaming, but no SSD, so it might boot up a few seconds slower than one with an SSD. It's big brother costs $100 more, has an SSD, and an i7 if you really want irresponsible power. Probably gets pretty hot under gaming load.

MSI GP62MVR248 Probably this price for clearing out, but has an i7, GTX 1060, and plenty of horsepower for anything you need.

Dell Inspiron 15 7000 A good option at a lower price point than the previous two I mentioned.

Lenovo y40-80 A little cheaper, and uses a radeon gpu instead of nvidia, but still a good gpu. I'm not the biggest radeon guy, but it's not bad.

If you can stretch to 900 dollars i'd jump straight to this (i really really suggest it) but if it is a hard limit this this should work well too.

You can pick up a wireless keyboard and mouse combo at Walmart probably for like 15$

Amazon says the GPU is out of stock... no surprise there. I don't think its the price you should be worried about (they are really stupidly overpriced right now nonetheless) its the quantity of graphics cards on the market right now. Most large PC stores will probably have maybe 10 GPUs in stock if they're lucky, most likely less. Sign up to the email reminder for the card, and try to look in local stores for a graphics card that supports 4K.

These are the Nvidia GPUs that support 4K
List

Consider getting a laptop for you uses, especially if its not gaming you seek. They tend to be cheaper for whats inside them currently.
700$ Laptop This one is on sale for 100$ off currently, I'd choose this one personally.

I bought this one..

[Dell inspiron 5577] (https://www.amazon.com/dp/B06XFGDD8P/ref=twister_B06XYM29GY?_encoding=UTF8&amp;amp;psc=1)

I came with one 8gb RAM stick, so I plan on buying another, as it can support up to 32gb.

I'm also going to replace the screen as the screen on this one is not that great.
I plan to replace it with this one

I mainly bought it because I currently have a MBP, but I wanted something I could upgrade and add to, as I can't do that with my MBP. I'm pretty happy with it. I was playing last night on high settings with some basic mods and a few assets (TM:PE, Move It and RICO, for now) there wasn't any lagging or problems and the laptop barely warmed up, which I was surprised about. I don't plan on using it for much else though, I have a few other games I want to add, but since my other laptop still works, I plan on using that one for my work/docs/pics and stuff like that so this one wont get bogged down.

u/ikhezu · 2 pointsr/SuggestALaptop

If you want something for gaming, check this dell out. It is bit chunky and not that light but it is manageable. Will run games well enough though.

This is lighter and has better battery life. But it is almost 2 years old. MAYBE it can run overwatch on low, but I'm not sure. the microsoft surface pro book

This is the best I can do considering your price point and specifications. I hope that helps!

Maybe that one, I'd recommend at least a 1050 for your needs although a 1050 ti would be better. Most of the ones you listed won't be able to handle your games.

u/ahrhamza · 2 pointsr/battlefield_one

How much is your budget? If you could spend maybe till $850, check out the Dell Inspiron 15 or the Acer VX 15. Both have decent specs and you can run Battlefield at high settings with around 50ish fps.

Acer VX 15

Dell inspiron 15

Both have options you can choose depending on what you want and how much you're looking to spend.

Sorry I just noticed that the Dell you linked actually has a pretty bad harddrive, is recommend this one instead, but it's a few bucks extra https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B06XFGDD8P/ref=mp_s_a_1_4?ie=UTF8&amp;amp;qid=1520295735&amp;amp;sr=8-4&amp;amp;pi=AC_SX236_SY340_FMwebp_QL65&amp;amp;keywords=dell+gaming+laptops&amp;amp;dpPl=1&amp;amp;dpID=41zfabBnrLL&amp;amp;ref=plSrch

Also if you really wanna stay on the cheap side, this is the best I could find in just a few minutes of searching, but this laptop had 1 tiny fan vs the 2 giant fans in the Dell (And more cooling/fans = better performance) https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B075FLBJV7/ref=psdcmw_13896615011_t1_B01K1IO3QW?th=1&amp;amp;psc=1

I highly recommend the Dell though as it has all better parts + wayyy better cooling so it's miles better for only $150 extra

u/Gonzo_von_Richthofen · 2 pointsr/EliteDangerous

I got this one. It's not high end, but better than average I guess. I don't know anything about computer specs, had my brother in law check it out first. When I bought it, I guess it was probably upper mid tier. Regardless, it runs Elite on ultra settings just fine. Claims to be rift and vice ready, but I haven't gone that far yet. Been seriously considering it though.

You can try the ASUS F556UA-AS54.
This laptop has a 15.6 screen, and all the connection ports that a professor should need (SD cards, VGA, HDMI, USBs). It also has exactly 3 USB ports, 2 being USB 3.0s. It also has an optical drive in a 15.0 x 10.0 x 1.0 inch (WxDxH) form factor. The 6th gen i5 and 256 SSD would make this laptop feel blazingly fast with less than 10 seconds boot up time, and would more than suffice for Microsoft office and statistical packages. Lastly, this laptop is around 5 pounds, and battery should last way past an hour.

You can find it on amazon for around $549:

I think the others have already mentioned but there is no better fit than the Asus Zenbook pro

NOTE: If buying a ram, look for the single 16GB ram in the below link that costs 65$.
But, with those software requirements it is better to get upto 32 gigs or atleast 24 gigs of ram. So you can buy a zenbook pro and update the ram on it with THIS. One 8gb ram is soldered and the other can be upgraded to a 16GB for 65$

u/akitten007 · 2 pointsr/SuggestALaptop

I'm in a similar situation (same major) and I've found a few good suggestions.

  1. Asus Q534UX-BBI7T16 It's a BB exclusive convertible, 16GB Ram, i7-6500u, TB3 port, Nvidia 950M, 5lbs. On sale for 1300 this week
  2. Asus UX501VW I currently have this laptop. Quad core i7, 960m, TB3 port, 96wHr battery (big), weighs about 4.5 but doesn't feel that heavy. I can answer any questions about this one if needed.
  3. Dell XPS 15 Very portable, checks all the boxes. This model has a non touch 1080p which helps on battery life. Ram can be upgraded (based on a quick google search) Also sometimes you can find refurbished models on ebay for less.
u/jdsamford · 2 pointsr/SuggestALaptop

u/techneeeq · 2 pointsr/SuggestALaptop

Something like this Asus Zenbook would really be a fantastic choice for you. It has lot's of power and the ability to complete all tasks computer science can throw at you and run games like Runscape on very decent settings.

It's quality built and sleek design along with performance will have you not feeling jealous at all over a fiend with a Macbook. Oh, did I mention it's amazing screen quality and battery life ?Well, those ae two other great reasons to get the Zenbook.

u/Haeges · 2 pointsr/SuggestALaptop

No! You don't need a gaming laptop as LonerlM2 said! Photo and Video editing use more CPU than GPU. I would recommend getting a laptop with a modern CPU and an extremely good screen quality. Color gamut coverage, screen brightness and reproduction accuracy are imporant factors you should be aware of.

I recommend 2 options:

The ASUS ZenBook Pro UX501VW (1480$):

  • 15.6" Touch IPS 4K Ultra-HD display, 3840 x 2160 resolution
  • Powerful Intel Skylake Core i7-6700HQ 2.6 GHz Quadcore CPU (turbo to 3.5GHz).
  • Nvidia GTX960M GPU
  • 512GB SSD with transfer speeds of 1400MB/s and 16GB DDR4 RAM
  • 1x Thunderbolt III (via USB TypeC), 1x Gen 2 USB 3.1 TypeC, 3x USB 3.0, 1x HDMI.Bluetooth 4.0, SDXC reader.
  • 8hrs of battery life.
  • Brightness 289 nits (Strong), Color Gamut (sRGB) 111% (Very Strong), Color Accuracy: 4.37 (Below Average)

    Detailed review

Or the Microsoft Surface Book (1500$)

  • 13.5" Touch QHD, 3000 x 2000 resolution
  • Intel Skylake Core i5-6300U 2.4 GHz
  • 128GB SSD and 8GB DDR4 RAM
  • 12hrs of battery life.
  • Brightness 387 nits (Extremely good), Color Gamut (sRGB) 99% (Very Strong), Color Accuracy: 0.57 (Extremely good)

    Detailed review

N.B Took me an hour to search all these informations. Please read carefully what I've written. :)
u/Bossssss123456 · 2 pointsr/SuggestALaptop

The surface book seems to be a great option. But is very expensive, not sure you'll be willing to spend that much. Apart from that, this seems to be your best bet. There are rumors going around that this laptop might be upgraded with a 1060 (it seems to be the thinnest 1060 laptop), and i fully expect them to refresh this laptop in computex which is in june (as they usually do)

u/skip_204 · 2 pointsr/SuggestALaptop

There are a lot of choices with gaming laptops so it would be good to list out the specific games you're thinking about and how you would use the notebook. Do you have a size preference? Does it need to be portable? Are you going to need a long battery life?

Like I said, there are a ton of great gaming notebooks, but here are a few that are in your price range.

  • Acer Aspire V7-582PG-6479 Good screen, battery life, and weight but mid GPU so fine for Minecraft, not a good choice for graphics intensive games like Watch Dogs, etc.

  • Gigabyte P35K-CF1 Great screen, noise under heavy load.

  • Lenovo Y50 15.6 Honestly, the Y50 is probably your best choice for price/performance. Screen is crappy, but apparently simple to replace and the GTX 860M is a terrific GPU for most games at decent FPS performance.

http://www.amazon.com/Lenovo-15-6-Inch-Laptop-59418222-Black/dp/B00K6ZIO2K/ref=cm_cr_pr_product_top

i5 Y50. The 860M will be the bottleneck in gaming usually, unless it's heavily cpu intensive. If you're rendering video, compiling code, the i7 would be better.

16GB of ddr3 ram doesn't really help with gaming.

That newegg link isn't a good deal, you're not even getting a SSD out of it, you might as well purchase from lenovo website for $1,020 i7 1TB version, last week it was $949 i7 500gb version on lenovo w/ barnes &amp; noble discount.

u/nhebert1987 · 2 pointsr/SuggestALaptop

I was looking at the Envy's also, but wanted a beefier video card just in case I wanted to play some future games. I settled on the Lenovo Y50 line, 15" screen, 1tb hd +8gb solid-state, 8gb DDR3L and a GTX860M card. Plus is has your critical features (except not sure about taking apart, but I'm pretty sure with all laptops they are hard to take apart unless specifically made for gaming or something like Alienware, I don't know). Im going to the store later today and check them out in person, and maybe buy one.

Heres a model for $899, but it has a I5 processor (for $100ish more you could get an I7)

u/ClownsAreATen · 2 pointsr/SuggestALaptop

This Acer should be able to accomplish that.

If you want something closer to the higher end of that budget, the Lenovo Y50 offers much higher graphical performance with a 1080p screen. It was under 900 about a week ago, maybe it'll dip again.

u/Yopperpo · 2 pointsr/EngineeringStudents

If your scholarship has to be directly allocated to buy a computer, 1000 is more than enough.
RAM isn't the biggest factor in running programs like Solidworks and AutoCad, it's your graphics card. I'm was a regular poster on /r/SuggestALaptop (you should go here if you have any further questions). These laptops are 15.6 inch and relatively bulky, because portable laptops sacrifice performance for light weight and battery life. I assume you're willing to trade performance for those things.

First, decide if you need a laptop or desktop. The desktop will have better performance, but the laptop will be more portable. You stated that you want a laptop.

Acer Aspire V15
This would be a great buy. It has a Mid-High range GPU, 1TB hard drive to store all your files. If you want you could buy a laptop with an SSD but I would argue it isn't worth it since you're on a budget.

Asus N550JK
This laptop has a touchscreen, and has the best quality display out of all 3 laptops. If you have to do color specific work, this is the laptop to get. It also has a touchscreen, but the weakest GPU out of all 3.

Lenovo Y50
This last laptop is one of the most popular gaming laptops on the market, mainly due to the branding, backlit keyboard, etc. Many people complain about the display on this laptop, but it has a good price to performance ratio. The processor on this one is weaker than the other 2. There is a model with a stronger processor but it's over your budget.

Usually I would recommend the Lenovo Y50, but that's a great deal on the Acer. I would recommend that one personally because of the discount right now. With regards to the previous poster, my older brother is an ME, he does a lot of Solidworks/AutoCAD stuff and he often talks about how his laptop is convenient for him to work on, so if you feel a laptop would be really beneficial then I would buy one.

If you have any more questions you can message me or visit /r/suggestalaptop .

It'll run League almost for sure, LoL doesn't take up much processing or graphical power (though it probably won't run on anything above Medium, probably on Low is your best bet). I'm not sure how good the screen is because I don't own one, but I am looking at that and the current Asus Zenbook, which has a built-in graphics card. That will 100% be able to run League. However, it is more expensive and the screen has been said to have issues with color reproduction. Hope this helps!

The new ASUS Zenbook UX303LN looks like a good choice. Light and thin with a 3200x1800 resolution and dedicated graphics. Still at the pre-order stage, but I've heard it will begin shipping this month (not sure). Only thing that's different from your desired specifications is the 13.3" screen size.

EDIT: whoops i got beat

u/NOT_AN_APPLE · 2 pointsr/SuggestALaptop

The Asus Zenbook is, in my opinion, better.

First, brand-wise, Asus has a higher standard of quality control. Any Asus you buy has been through more extensive tests than any dell you buy. Dell uses cheaper generic parts like the motherboard or the webcam in my experience and that's what usually fails.

Specification wise, the Asus has 3 USB 3.0. The dell has 2 USB 3.0. The dell is tenths of an inch smaller. The asus has micro HDMI and mini displayport while the Dell has only mini displayport.

Also I think the ASUS is cheaper on amazon. It also looks cooler.

If you have the money, you could jump to the pimped out version of the ASUS which is pretty much a gaming machine that looks like an ultrabook. It's one of the best values out there.

u/drswnemo · 2 pointsr/SuggestALaptop

This seems to meet all of your needs, except the U series processor. I'm considering buying this model myself, the specs look really nice for the price.

What's your budget?

I recently picked up an Asus Zenbook 13" for $1300 on Amazon.

It has:

13.3" Quad-HD touchscreen display (3200 x 1800)
Intel Core i7-4510U 2 GHz.
12GB RAM
NVIDIA GT840M 2GB VRAM.
256GB Solid State Storage
802.11 A/C. 8-hour battery life.
3x USB 3.0
1x HDMI
1x miniDisplayPort
Bluetooth 4.0
SDXC slot

And it weighs next to nothing:

3.2 lbs

12.7 inches x 8.8 inches x 0.7 inches ~ 0.8 inches

u/2cats1dog · 2 pointsr/SuggestALaptop

I think the Asus Zenbook line would meet your criteria pretty well, although some of them are slightly over 3lb. I'm currently writing this from a ASUS Zenbook UX303LN-DB71T and so far it's treating me very well. At $1250 it would be under your budget and I think provides almost everything on your list.

u/Dub2921 · 2 pointsr/SuggestALaptop

I'd have a look at the following laptop OP:

ASUS Zenbook UX303LN-DB71T 13.3" Quad-HD Display Touchscreen Laptop
1,249.99 on amazon.com with FREE shipping.

Pretty much ticks all of the prerequisites you have listed. Very light weight at only 3.2 pounds plus it features a Core i7 and SSD meaning it will fly through the various applications in adobe creative suite. Ultrabooks in general are great because the battery life is long lasting. In the this case, it lasts 8 hours.

u/ShyFilmsStudios · 2 pointsr/gopro

I'd look for something with 8-16 GB ram, an Intel Core i7 Processor and a good graphic card. Something like this. Its a little expensive, but the main issue is rendering with weak laptops. They are essentialy useless to do other things with whilst rendering. Of cource you have to decide youreself what you want to spend on it. Its just a suggestion.

u/xgunnyx504 · 2 pointsr/SuggestALaptop

I would recommend the Asus GL551. I got one one sale for $1000, threw in my old SSD and have been quite happy with it. The display isnt amazing, but i dont notice any problems. Its handled all my games like Titanfall and BF4 no problem with noise or heat. Its also an Asus and I trust them plus the free year accidental damage coverage, the only thing i can think to compare it to would be the Lenovo Y50. If you need portability it might be better but the Asus's screen and cooling is superior.

www.amazon.com/GL551JM-DH71-GeForce-GTX860M-Optimus-Technology/dp/B00MMMMMX2

u/totalprocrastination · 2 pointsr/dragonage

$500 is not going to buy you a new gaming laptop that will be up to date for DA:I, even at low settings.

Generally speaking, Asus's Republic of Gamers line of laptops are solidly built gaming laptops sold at reasonable prices, but the cheapest model I can find on Amazon is the 15' ASUS ROG GL551JM-DH71 which is currently $1,089.99.

It comes with a GeForce GTX 860M which I believe will play DA:I at High settings at 720p resolution based on these benchmarks.

So I'd recommend discussing with your parents if they would be willing to front you more money and/or you save up your own to chip in, and/or look for some used ones on ebay.

I also have this laptop and feel it's a great buy for those who don't want to spend $2k+ on an XPS 15 or MacBook Pro (which are good products but just pricey). If you are looking for a smaller laptop, you won't get something as fast in a relatively thin package. This is the Zenbook Pro's smaller brother the Asus UX303. ASUS ZenBook UX303UB 13.3-Inch QHD+ Touchscreen Laptop, Intel Core i7, 12 GB RAM, 512 GB SSD, Discrete GPU Nvidia GT940M, Windows 10 (64 bit) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B014VHVZFQ/ref=cm_sw_r_other_apa_s0hDxb9PTKCY3 it's solid but doesn't have a type c port. Otherwise it's a great laptop.

u/thecolonelofk · 2 pointsr/pcmasterrace

I'm just going to go ahead and link you to r/SuggestALaptop for a better equipped suggestion, but I can give it a shot. That budget might be a little rough.

Autocad is generally single threaded, with some actions requiring more, so you'll be fine with a laptop i5/i7 (dual core without, and with hyperthreading), and won't require a HQ SKU CPU (4 actual cores). RAM is going to be a big consideration, since it's fairly easy to fill up. Autodesk recommends 8, which should be alright, but up to 16 is going to be better. The GPU is definitely worth having, but it doesn't need to be incredible. Something like a GT940M or higher is absolutely fine.

Budget option - $510

13-inch option - $1099

Premium option - $1299

Intel Core i5-6200U 2.3 GHz, 13.3", 1920 x 1080, 8 GB RAM, 256 GB SSD, Intel HD Graphics 520, Windows 10 Home 64-Bit, 7 hours battery life, 3.2 lbs.

It only has integrated graphics but it should be able to handle Minecraft and Sims 3 reasonably well:

you can also take a look at the asus rog laptops they are really good and right up there with the MSI's. Check out the ASUS ROG GL752VW-DH71, its the same price as the msi and specs as well the reason why it is that price is that your paying for the inchs, the msi and the asus rog linked above are both 17inchs you could get a 15inch for the asus for $30 less

u/mini_painter_mark · 2 pointsr/elderscrollsonline

The Intel HD 520 graphics will significantly hold you back. If you want to crank the graphics up you will need a dedicated graphics card instead of an integrated card.

I imagine it would run the game at low settings but not very well. Honestly I just looked up the Thinkpad T560 and for the price it costs you could buy an ASUS Republic of Gamers laptop for the same price, with a better processor, 2gb dedicated graphics card, and 16GB RAM. You would be able to run ESO on High settings above 30 FPS. I have a 3 year old Asus ROG laptop and play on High settings with shadows on medium and water reflections turned down and run 30-60 fps depending on the area. You just aren't going to get a good experience with an integrated graphics card, so for the price you would be paying why not get a gaming laptop with better specs?

Gee, what timing! I just recently finished writing my Top 5 Best Budget Gaming Laptop under $1000 guide.

The #1 pick of the guide if you want a quick answer was the HP Pavilion 15 Gaming Notebook.

The reason the Pavilion took the number 1 spot was because it's the best all-rounder. It's got the Intel i7-6700HQ CPU which is the best even in the up to $1500 price range, the Nvidia GTX960M which is very respectable and can play recent games on high, if not ultra settings, 16GB of RAM, 15.6" Full HD IPS display and more importantly a 128GB SSD as well as a 1TB 7200RPM hard drive.

This is definitely the best laptop with impressive specs that also has an SSD and a good screen.

Now if screen size is a huge factor for you and you'd prefer 17.3" instead of 15.6" you're going to have to sacrifice a little bit given the price range.

For the 17.3" range i'd suggest the Asus ROG GL752VW-DH71. It has the same CPU/GPU/RAM as the Pavilion 15 with the notable omission of the SSD drive.

Ultimately the decision of SSD v bigger screen size is a choice for you to make. Although keep in mind that the DH71 does have an upgrade panel, so you can add an SSD down the track if you want faster boot speeds/game loading screen etc. where as you can't make the screen size bigger.

Hope this helped and i'm happy to answer anymore questions you may have!

u/BossRSA · 2 pointsr/buildmeapc

I completely agree with u/elint that you should go ask at r/SuggestALaptop for suggestions from people who know more about laptops than most of us PC builders. However, a good option may be this laptop (there's a 17.3" model if you Grandma prefers screen real estate over portability) that has a G-Sync 1080p screen, 16GB of RAM, an i7, and a GTX 1060, so she can expect to max out any game at 1080p 60fps. You could then add a 240GB SSD like this one, and install the OS and WOW on it.

Hope this helps, and feel free to ask any questions!

Would the pavilion run CAD fine? With regular use how long do you think before it would see a decline in performance? I'm an EE major looking for something to last 4+ yrs.

Also, what is your opinion on this vs. this at the same price?

u/snobbycookies · 2 pointsr/SuggestALaptop

Ha, that is the exact configuration I was looking at as well - 512GB SSD, 16GB RAM, and the GTX 1060. Thanks for the tip about the displays.

So I guess in that $1300 price point, which outweighs the other? The P650 or the Acer? (link to Acer: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01N35Z1DA/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_dp_T1_t36CzbDH4NKZ0)

u/fw85 · 2 pointsr/Rainbow6

&gt; You did read it because you talked about part of what I said in the middle of the text. You're taking the childish approach of saying you didn't read it because you can't properly respond, which I guess is what I would expect from you at this point.

No I did not read your wall of text thoroughly to be able to come up with a response. I just quickly looked at it to see if I see specs listed somewhere and if not, I couldn't be bothered.

&gt; I get the complain that it is pricey, but you are going above and beyond to display your hate, when I don't think it deserves that. All the specs are better than those of comparable laptops except for the GPU, and even that is closing in. In some respects it's even better. You get a GPU that will run most games on med settings without the harm of that power consumption. It's great if you're not a gamer, and even if you are, it is serviceable. Not for everyone, but you clearly have some poor personal experience with it.

Alright, I just found the model you have, if you have the one with the i7 6920HQ. You're right, its specs are very good, can't argue with that. Then I scrolled down a bit. Price. $2700-$3000.

Are you mad? Those specs are good but they're nowhere near worth that much. That's an absolutely insane price to pay for a laptop and cannot possibly be justified if you're not just an apple fanboy. It's not just about being able to afford it, it's about making a poor consumer choice and wasting money.

The specs itself could not be any better, because a GPU any more powerful than a 960M would require a better cooling system, therefore sacrificing thinness, but these specs are not worth almost $3k.

If we purely focus on very slim ultrabooks that pack a punch, your MBP's main competitor is the ASUS ZenBook Pro UX501VW.

The 6920HQ is about 10% better than the 6700HQ, so nothing groundbreaking. This has a 4k touchscreen, a full aluminium body, and a 512 GB PCIe SSD on top of that. All for $1500. And it can be nicely taken apart for upgrades/dust cleaning/repairs.

Like I said before, you get all that for half the price of the MBP. Just because someone at Apple always multiplies their standard retail price by 2 before they distribute their products. And then they make their fanboys pay for it. And they will, which is why Apple has lived so long with their ridiculous prices.

The products themselves aren't necessarily bad. They're often bad for their price.

In theory you can do all that with a $55 Raspberry Pi 4. In absolute fact you can do all that with a $50 used Dell Optiplex. Dont want to risk a sketchy craigs list buy? Amazon Renewed. Here is an HP 8300 Elite Small Form Factor Desktop Computer, Intel Core i5-3470 3.2GHz Quad-Core, 8GB RAM, 500GB SATA, Windows 10 Pro 64-Bit, USB 3.0, Display Port for $160. I wouldn't recommend getting a small form factor, but they are cheaper, and they will fit up to a GT 1050 Low Profile(you have to specifically get a low profile model), other wise a GT 1030 will drop right in, you just need to swap the plate on the back of it with the low profile one they all come with.

Yeah for that price, I guess you cant ask for too much performance. Id just want to make sure that you have right expectation for the level of performance you'll be getting. The CPU is worse than the ones that they put in a 200 dollar laptop.

I would personally get a cheap prebuilt something like this, as the CPU is miles better, and you can add like a LP card like rx 550/560 or gtx1030/1050/1050ti/1650 later if I want to game.

u/mustfix · 2 pointsr/buildapc

They're all connected via PCIe. That's standard.

Low Profile /Half-height (they mean the same thing) is also a standard.

Your HP 8300 is an SSF form factor? Then you're stuck with Low Profile cards. Any low profile card will fit in the remaining space within the HP 8300 SFF.

So, I'm guessing you want a one-for-all machine for college?

If you want to maximize build quality: XPS 15. The 7300HQ ones will be a good option. It's got long battery life, and a decent GPU to boot. Too bad it's running an SSHD combo. An SSD based system would be much faster

If you want the best performance at the smallest amount of money, your suggestion was already nice, but if possible, I'd recommend stepping down from that NVMe drive and going instead with a bigger SSD if you can. If the customizer doesn't allow for more, this combo is a very solid option for the price already though

If you want to maximize performance, then the Sager would be the best option imo as it's customizable and very easily upgradeable. If you're a bit of a storage freak, this thing can contain 2 M.2 2280 SSDs, with 1 slot capable for NVMe drive, and 2 more HDD/SSD slots in the 2.5" form. Other than that, there's the GL502 from Asus, same performance basically but slimmer since it accomodates only 1 SSD (M.2) and 1 HDD/SSD

If you want the cheapest possible option: HP Pavilion Power 15 At $700 this isn't gonna be wrong. It's cheap, cheaper than the lowest end Dell 7567, but it comes at a price. Build quality won't be as solid as the Dells, but it will have all the features it has. Tbh, I won't go HP unless I am really strapped for cash, or if I'm willing to go big and get the Envy, Spectre, or Omen series.

Alright, budgets aside, the fastest machine would be the Asus and Sager (Tied in first place), Dell Inspiron 7567, and lastly there's the XPS 15 and the HP (both tied in 3rd place).

But it's not so simple. See, considering your workload, you're already fine with a 1050 since you don't exactly run AAA titles anyway. The GPU should have some breathing room for those games but not by a big margin. But there's another thing, you're doing Photoshop, and also you're probably be bringing this to classes as well, so you need some strong battery life.

The XPS fits the bill. Not only it has an accurate, good looking screen, it also boasts a strong battery life. The lower end model would probably still last you 6 hours while the rest of the pack probably will only last for 3 hours and 4 hours tops. Then there's also the size, even though they're all 15 inchers, the XPS is actually slimmer since the screen is nigh-bezelless. If you're still dreaming of the AAA titles, there's a TB3 port for all your eGPU needs (Wait for Akitio or PowerColor to release their take on eGPU enclosures though. Razer's solution is too expensive). If you've saved enough, the XPS actually makes up for a very futureproof system. If you can squeeze $100 more from the budget, I'd recommend aiming for the i7 equipped version since it's gonna last you longer and since you're doing productive work as well, the hyperthreading might see some utilization.

The second recommendation would fall to the Sager. It boasts a more accurate screen than the Asus. Performance-wise it's more powerful than the XPS due to the stronger 1060 GPU inside. This will be apparent in games and in video rendering in Premiere, but not much else otherwise. Build quality on this is pretty solid, but it really lacks battery life. I'm using the stronger brother of the laptop (One with 1070) and I can only get 3 hours at max with the iGPU running. Babying it will give me 4 hours but it stays on standby pretty much half the time. Unless you're going to use the battery as some sort of UPS, the performance of this thing won't shine. It's a bit like a hungry V8 Mustang Cobra. It's fast, yes. But it also guzzles fuel like there's no tomorrow. The XPS on the other hand, is like a nimble BMW M4. It's stylish, probably not as fast but it's certainly much more frugal than the brash American.

u/HReflex · 2 pointsr/laptopmasterrace

This might be the laptop for your brother!

u/SpecialityToS · 2 pointsr/pcmasterrace

If you still want a laptop, I can't really recommend too much other than getting a 1060 or 1070 with it.

So, i just went through a similar buying process. I was looking for a travel editing laptop - didn't have to be top drawer, but i knew what I wanted out of it. I wanted 16gb of Ram, a SSD (preferably two, for OS and edit), decent internal graphics card and an i7 processor. I manged to find [this Zenbook] (https://www.amazon.com/ZenBook-15-6-Inch-Touchscreen-i7-6700HQ-Thunderbolt/dp/B01CQRNBJG/ref=sr_1_7?s=pc&amp;amp;ie=UTF8&amp;amp;qid=1478282278&amp;amp;sr=1-7&amp;amp;keywords=asus+zenbook) refurbished on sale at amazon for ~$900. I snapped it up, as it had everything I wanted plus a 4k touchscreen display. If you can find an equivalent deal, or want to wait until there's a price drop again, might be a good bet. But that is overkill for what you need, I believe.

Before I found that deal, I was looking pretty seriously at [this Dell laptop] (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B015PYYDMQ/ref=s9_simh_gw_g147_i3_r?ie=UTF8&amp;amp;fpl=fresh&amp;amp;pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&amp;amp;pf_rd_s=&amp;amp;pf_rd_r=RZKMKS8JW9EF4SF11QZV&amp;amp;pf_rd_t=36701&amp;amp;pf_rd_p=6aad23bd-3035-4a40-b691-0eefb1a18396&amp;amp;pf_rd_i=desktop). It's only $770 for the base, and for an extra ~$40 you can get another 8GB of RAM to install into the open slot, and the laptop even has a slot for an extra SSD / HDD - depending on if you want fast storage or mass storage, and how much cash you want to splash. So the only real sacrifice then is you're not getting an i7 processor - but i doubt that'll be a real stumbling block if you're just working with wedding footage. Shouldn't be too much heavy VFX processing needed.

In fact, it's very similar to the first link in your post above - the big trade seems to be that the one in your post has an optical drive and the Dell doesn't. However i don't know if you can upgrade the MSI same as the Dell, so the 8gb vs 16gb of ram might be an issue. Also, the MSI has a 1TB HDD, as opposed to the SSD + open hard drive slot on the Dell.

Your second link is very similar to the MSI, however it has a 5400 RPM internal drive, which i would NOT recommend for any sort of editing work.

Third link (comment) is a nice laptop, with everything you would want - but i'd argue you can get all of that from the Dell with upgrades, and save a few hundred. Again, only loss is i5 versus i7 processor.

Hope this was helpful!

I´d say the DELL XPS 15 or the ASUS zenbook are a pretty safe bet. Depends on how intense your applications are. They are light, fast, long battery life, decent processor and an SSD inside. Plus, they will run even new games (prob on low settings).

Important to note that video editing and rendering usually require a good processor (i7 is not always better than i5 but in this case, your applications make use of the additional threads that the i7 has over the i5).

If you really need high-end hardware, fastest processor, best graphic card, huge ssd and so forth, I would recommend getting a Sager laptop. These things will be bulky but they´ll manhandle everything.

https://www.amazon.com/Dell-XPS-15-15-6-Inch-i7-6700HQ/dp/B019PB6X78/ref=sr_1_1?s=pc&amp;amp;ie=UTF8&amp;amp;qid=1479421719&amp;amp;sr=1-1&amp;amp;keywords=dell+xps+15

There you go, one has 256gb ssd, the other 512gb ssd. In both cases you would want an external HDD which are super easy to set-up. Basically just plug in the USB and off you go.

EDIT: I´d prob go with the asus as you would want 16gb ram for your applications and i found the one below that basically does the same and is much cheaper, yet bulkier, less battery life and worse design obv
