EDIT: The kit's now available here

Thank you guys so much for your feedback. I really appreciate it. As a thank you, when the Kickstarter gets funded, I'll ask for your Reddit username and I'll give all Redditors a free bag of extra wire clips and a few other parts to help you attach accessories.

Hey everyone, I posted this thread last week and got input from you all about what you want in your work/battle station.

Here is a summary of what everyone suggested and what I did to try to solve their problem.

For the sake of shipping and to save money if you already have a desk, I designed it to mount onto an existing model of IKEA desk that's very common, decent quality and not very expensive.

Add-ons in photos that are not part of the kits:

IKEA Galant Desk, $160

http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/S89807037/#/S89807037

(I have the T-Leg which costs a bit more)

Desk lamp, $16

http://www.walmart.com/ip/Evolution-Lighting-Swing-Arm-Desk-Lamp-with-Clamp-in-Black/15861441

10-Outlet Surge Protector Strip, $30

http://www.lowes.com/ProductDisplay?productId=1214065

LED Backlighting, $40

http://www.amazon.com/Sylvania-72344-Mosaic-Flexible-Light/dp/B008COVFUA

Complete desk setup estimated cost:

$160 basic Ikea desk

$95 Station Frame (the basic monitor-holding frame)

$85 Station Accessories (shelves, arms, etc.)

$340 total

It's also built with a totally modular system so you can add accessories later or modify any feature to the size you need.

Combination of parts from Amazon and ebay. Not all of them are necessary, fittings and Brute trashcans and such are from Home Depot.

Sure! Quick summary: it's clear 2" acrylic tube with paper on the inside to diffuse the light, light strip in the tubes is this, fire at the bottom is these with fabric glued around them. The thrust structure, interstage, nose cones, fairing, legs, raceways, and gridfins are all 3D printed out of black or clear PLA. All the wiring for the light strip runs up wires in the raceways and then down through the tubes

Can you link which product you have there? Is it two separate strips that provide the different colors? Where is the strip attached on your setup? I have a similar stand but don't know if I should run the lights along the bottom, middle or top shelf.

This is the product I have https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01LRT0B56/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o09__o00_s02?ie=UTF8&psc=1

First and foremost, this is 5m of lights and half the price.

You can buy 5 meters of pure white for about $8, and if it's for cabinets why would you wan't anything but white? If you want RGB,

You can cut the strips to your own desired length/luminosity.

12VDC power supplies are in abundance and cheap.

If you don't need a remote, any cheap switch would turn them on and off, or better yet, use hall effects to turn the lights on if cabinet door is opened. Why would I want a remote for cabinet lights? Ambient light sensor if anything, so it works like a night light.

Sorry if I'm shitting all over this, I just laugh every time I see some overly priced LED lights. It works though, because people like lights. I just wish people knew how much they were over paying.

u/theoreticallymike · 6 pointsr/DIY

For a couple of dollars more per strip ( and a different controller ) you can get ones that have two sets of LEDs. One for controllable colors and one with warm white.

The "white" generated from the color LEDs strained my eyes, the warm white didn't. It's much better for reading and room lighing IMHO.

Just put new RGBW strip lighting in the rack to provide some extra light to the front of the rack, contemplating on doing the back but there’s not a lot of room. For anyone wondering what lights I used, here’s the link. https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B01HD37U6S/ref=ya_aw_od_pi?ie=UTF8&psc=1&th=1

u/roadtrippa88 · 6 pointsr/HomeKit

I am in the process of using a cheap 5050 LED strip and wiring it into a nodeMCU wifi arduino board. This allows the hue and brightness to be changed via wifi from the nodeMCU webserver. Then you can use a home bridge plugin to control that via homekit.

LED Strip and nodeMCU tutorial

Homebridge plugin

All the parts for the 10m 5050 LED Strip and nodeMCU cost between $30-$40

Another alternative would be the Xiaomi YeeLight Strip, its also $30-$40 but only 2m.

It's much less hassle and there is a homebirdge plugin here

These are really nice because there's an app that controls all the lights as well as a button that attaches to it. I have my button under my desk with some double sided tape.

Hanging LEDs strings around the screened patio (using this). The plan is to use smart lighting controls with LED strips around the ceiling in every room, but the screened porch is the testbed. The one thing I'm not sure on is how to camouflage the strips. My idea is to paint them white. My concerns are that will be even worse on non-white walls, the light won't look right and/or the paint will cause them to over heat.

Also much gardening between rain and unpacking.

Materials:

Three 5-gallon buckets and one lid (Ace Hardware has white ones for $4, if you don't want orange or blue from HD or Lowe's.) All three cost $12-13.

THESE LEDS from Amazon. $13.59

THIS POWER SUPPLY, the Supernight LED Charger. It is $20.99. You will also need a power cord for it, which I recommend just going to literally ANY thrift store and picking out a nice three-pronged power cord. I'm fairly certain that any three-pronged power cord will work, so if you have one you're not using at home, you can use that.

THIS LED GROW LIGHT, which is 300w and cost $50.99.

TWO of these PC fans. Total cost $10.04.

I bought one of this black duct tape, one of this foil tape (although I recommend buying two, as I ran out with my first roll and had to buy another from the store), and also some double-sided tape, because, if your LED strip is like mine, the adhesive backing is almost nonexistent and the tape becomes necessary.

Oh, and good-quality velcro adhesive patches!

You will also need a power drill and a sturdy box cutter.

I started by taping the entire interior of one bucket with the foil tape, save for the bottom portion where the soil goes. Then I covered the outside with the black tape. Next I drilled holes in the bottom for drainage.

Then I took two of the other buckets and used a ruler's width to mark a cut line right below the lip of each bucket to create spacers. The process of cutting the plastic buckets was definitely the worst part of the process, especially since I didn't have a great cutter, so if you're getting a new one, don't be too cheap. I got this one and it's blade locking function no longer works after this project, so be advised. I lined the spacers with foil tape.

Using the remains of one of the other buckets, I trimmed more of the bucket down so that it's now only the bottom and stands 5" tall. I found some random large screws in my toolbox and drilled them around the circumference, which allows the rest of the bucket to be easily lifted off of the drain pan.

I then drew a circle about 1 cm in from the lip of the lid and cut that out. The light fits perfectly on it. There is lots of light escape at the rim, but it looks pretty cool, so I don't mind it for now.

For the power supply, I cut off the female end of the three-pronged cord I got from Arc Thrift and stripped the wires down a bit. There were three wires inside, green (ground), white (neutral), and black (live), which I then connected to driver. I was certain to unplug during any wire-play and I hope everyone else is, too.

The sidelights were sort of a struggle. I used a scrap of the buckets, like maybe 4-5 inches of bucket from about half-way down to a quarter, so not much. I then lined the inside with the double-sided tape, cutting strips, in an effort to conserve tape, which feels very stable. I drilled a hole and fed the cable through, then determined the best spot to drill a hole on the exterior bucket. It's about at the center of the bucket, or in my case, 13 cm down from the lip. Finally, I fed the LED cable through the exterior hole and the lights were basically in place, where it would sit right above the soil.

I didn't want to have to extend any cords, so I found an ideal spot to place the driver on the exterior so that all cables (LED strip, both fans) could reach their appropriate ports. I fixed the velcro onto the bucket and the driver and tidied the wires with some more duct tape.

Finally, I sealed the edges of both fans, inside and outside, with their respective tapes.

I'm pretty sure that's everything I've done to this point, but if I think of anything else, I'll add it. I'm likely going to black-out the spacers to reduce light leak.

Please let me know if you have any advice, questions, comments!

Thank you /r/SpaceBuckets, for the inspiration and wisdom!

The H801 controller is very affordable, and works great. You just need it ~$15, and a run of the mill RGBW strip, $15. Make sure the strip comes with a power supply. I've been using these, https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B01HD37U6S/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o08_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Out of the box, the H801 will have instructions to download an app that you can use to control the lights. Once you get into SmartThings in the future, you then need to flash the H801 with new firmware, install a device handler and smart app, and it'll then work through smartthings (and Google Home) and you can delete the app you had been using. u/pier25 · 4 pointsr/Monitors

I've been battling with this myself during this past year. This is what I've learned.

Here are the factors that influence eye strain:

  1. PWM Cheaper and older LED monitors use a technique called pulse width modulation to lower the brightness of the screen. So instead of lowering the power of the LED, the LEDs are still at max brightness but flash intermittently on and off at a slower speed. This produces eye strain on a lot of people and the Dell U2412M (I also have one in a box) has PWM.

A simple way of checking if your monitor has PWM is lowering the brightness and waving your hand fast in front of the monitor. You should see "steps" instead of a fluid motion. Another way is by using a camera.

    More info here.

  2. Text size Sadly in macOS you can't scale all the UI (either hiDPI or not) but in Windows 10 you can scale. Text should be comfortable to read. Small text produces eye strain, specially if you need glasses.

For example a 1440p monitor at 24 or even 27 inches may produce text that is too small to read if you are over 35 years old. In my experience the ideal resolution is 4K at 27 inches with hiDPI on macOS or 175%-200% scaling in Windows.

  3. Blue light Some monitors and some software such as F.Lux allow you to lower the amount of blue light which for some people can cause eye strain.

  4. Room lighting This may seem trivial but is very important. You need to have some light source behind your monitor. This is called bias lighting and you can buy some LED strips to fix this. Also beware of strong light sources coming from your side vision such as windows.

  5. Matte panels Some people have problems focusing on some matte anti glare coatings which forces your eyes and produces eye strain. It's rare, but I have suffered this myself with some Dell monitors. The problem is that it's very difficult to buy a glossy monitor these days.

I recommend the Yeelight bulbs. I now have a bunch in my house since they are pretty inexpensive and do not require a hub. They work flawlessly with my Echo. They are $25 right now I believe and they were about $45 when I bought them so it's a steal.

Edit: I forgot to mention they have a White version where you can only adjust the temperature of the whiteness, they are cheaper. They also have RGB strips that work with Alexa, and flawlessly too.

For LED lightbars you can get them anywhere really.

I recently (yesterday) bought this.

It's a 1 meter of RGB 5050 LED, and I plan on running it with a external battery pack for some project that requires being mobile.

They have ones with AC adapters, really just google something to the extent of 5050 LED strip, RGB if you want to change colours, or just get white or whatever colour you want/need to save money. 5050 is the size of the LED, there are smaller ones as well.

If you don't trust buying from some Chinese company you can ebay it, or look at your local brick and mortar stores. I know Costco sells Sylvania Mosaic ones, and of course Amazon sells it.

Youtube video search something like sylvania mosaic review to get the general gist of what it is.

I mean the quality might not be there, but if you go thru Costco or Amazon their return policies are pretty good, and it's not $200, it's like $30.

These look like 5050 rgb lights, so something like this controller and a 12v (assuming they're 12v) power supply will work SUPERNIGHT IR Remote Controller 44 Keys for RGB LED Light Strip https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00AF5YOK2/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_bNRCybGME5ZMG

Just wondering why this is getting so much attention because I'm in the market for one of these for a pc molex case mod.

u/_ataraxia · 3 pointsr/snakes

i bought these LED strip lights, which can be cut down to whatever length, and this power supply. i also bought some extra wire and connectors so i could run one long strip of LED lights through all four enclosures. worked around the adhesive issue by hot gluing the fuck out of them. i scratched up a line about two inches away from the front wall, to create some texture for the hot glue to grab, and allowed some extra glue to sort of wrap around the strip and prevent the strip from being peeled away from the glue.

u/CaptainCaaavemaaan · 3 pointsr/retrogaming

I did something like that for my Lego shelf. Used some LED strips and a motion sensor module to keep it all automatic. I had no idea what I was doing and bought a bunch of stuff I didn't need, but...

  • LED Strip - $7
  • Cable to run the power across the shelf - $8 (should've just used some spare cabling I had...)
  • Motion detector - $10
  • Power plug - $8

And if you're comfortable soldering, that's pretty much all you need to get something up and running. But I wanted to make it all modular so I could take it apart and set it back up without too much hassle. So I ended up buying adapters and coaxial power cable things:

  • Ribbon to coaxial adapter - $5
  • Coaxial to regular 'ol cable adapater - $7
  • Power splitter - $6.50

I'm pretty sure I did it as inefficiently and cost ineffective as possible because I have severe amazon impulse control issues and just buy shit to get started on fun projects. I'm sure with a little more research/guidance you could do it a little cheaper. But I'm happy with my setup for now.

and here's a picture of the shelf. The shelf is terrible, and it's all a wreck because I'm in the middle of moving, but it shows the brightness pretty well. Oh and I have about a 1/4 roll of LEDs left, so I'd guess 2 or 3 rolls would take care of your shelf.

If you're ok with the strips only being one color at a time (no rainbows, fire effects, chasing lights, etc.), then the absolute simplest thing to do would be a wifi controller with a set of rgb(w) lights:

As far as the desk lights go, I probably can't help you too much, but it's likely just an LED strip under the desk or along the back of it.

As for the computer lights. To make it easy for you, some cases have LED's built into them that you can control like this one here it's not the exact same as OP's but somewhat similar. To get one similar to OP's my guess is it's this case here, but it doesn't have LED's built in so you'd have to buy yourself some case LED strips if you find yourself savvy enough for it.

As for the components, you can easily find components that light up and are controllable such as this RAM. Most higher end GPU's have controllable LED's, you can research the brands that might. I know my EVGA brand Nvidia cards do. The light up CPU heatsink looks to be a hybrid cooler similar to this one which has controllable LED's.

After you have all that stuff, it's a matter of just installing the LED controller software for each and picking blue/pink hue's for them.

u/SpaceBucketFu · 3 pointsr/SpaceBuckets

People typically use the SMD 5630, water-proof LED strips, as seen here

For more build-material info, check out the www.spacebuckets.com materials page

The SMD5050 variety would work, but are less efficient.

The larger chipsizes such as the SMD7020 draw too much power and get quite warm, increasing difficulty in the heat management department as well as probably being just a tad too bright to be positioned so close to the plant canopy.

edit- Added 7020 info and accidentally admin removed/approved

I went with LED strips to light my garage; I ran one under each of the 4 beams running across my garage, which is ~ 18'x19' in size. I'm really really happy with the result; there's a lot of light, and it's coming from everywhere, which means very few problems with shadows, and there's virtually no risk of breaking a light when moving big pieces of wood around in my garage. These are the strips I used; just need some power supplies to run em, I can dig up the power supplies and splitters I used if you're interested.

They both work totally fine. The first one I have linked is a bit higher quality than the second from my experience (I actually have both in my room). If you only need to cover 16 or so feet than go with the first. If you need 33 ft. I'd say go with the 2nd option- that ones a 33 footer that has real good performance for price ratio.

They do exist but I'm not sure how popular a Hue blacklight would be.

You could create your own today if you really wanted. A simple UV light strip (https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01C2NQWIQ/) along with the DE FLS-PP controller (https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00NMSQ4QQ/) should do the trick. You'd connect the UV strip to the white channel of the controller (ignoring RGB) and Hue would see your backlight as a white bulb.

I have a couple of Yeelight light strips behind the desk and monitors which are connected to a Xiaomi gateway and probably soon to a Home Assistant Box.

Xiaomi have these little motion sensors about the size of a cork that you can use to automatically turn the LED's on when you enter the room and off when you're away for X minutes.

Or you can just get the Yeelight strips and manually control them via the switch or phone app.

Marineland makes a pretty small LED light Here is a link, you would just need to figure out a way to rig it in place in the hood. If you're not growing any plants you could get some of those stick on LED strips like these for example and place them in the hood.

Thanks! It’s by a brand called Sylvania. You can find them here: LED Strip Lights

Yes, you will need a power supply and a controller of some kind (similar to what came with the original kit).

I searched Amazon with the term "LED strip controller" and found this which should work fine . It's even the same brand as what you have (not that it's critical to do that)

Here's some connectors with wire and plugs on amazon if you prefer to order from there.

It's all pretty standard stuff for the most part.

Have fun

I am using

CableMod WideBeam Foam RGB LED Kit - 60cm
CableMod WideBeam Foam RGB LED Strip - 30cm

The 60 cm goes from partly up the rear to the front on the bottom. The 30cm is next to the radiator at the top. Now for the RGB controller I am not using the one in the kit. I mainly bought the kit to get a SATA to barrel connector but it had some other useful wires too. I am using a SUPERNIGHT IR Remote Controller as it allows for your own preset colors. If you go this route you need to make sure to change I believe the red and blue wires as they are reversed on the CableMod strip. They included short extensions with my kit so I reversed them on that.

My previous build had just SUPERNIGHT RGB LEDs and I must say the CableMod ones are much better. I want to find out a way to get the CPU area lit without seeing the RGB strips.

u/andersonmatt1125 · 2 pointsr/DIY

Yes, but the specifics of that will depend on which controller you buy. I'm actually doing something almost identical- hooking the lights up to a timer.

When power is restored, they resume whatever setting and brightness last used.

The item I linked to in my album wasn't the actual one I bought, it was just something similar I found an Amazon link to quickly. They're probably identical, but this is the model of LED controller that I have.

The storm has lights on it as standard doesn't it? If not I suggest them as an aid to keep orientation.

I use strips of LED ribbon stuck to the frame engine mounts to let me know where I'm pointed. They occasionally get ripped and damaged but having them on the motor mounts rather than front and back really helps and it's easy to snip and replace.

Also, it's easy to panic but be prepared to power down when you lose control. Your powered recovery attempt took you from a nice, open space with a guaranteed soft landing to a wooded area across the path of some walkers. You chose that area to test for a reason. Set yourself a rough perimeter you're happy with. Attempt recovery by all means but if you start to leave the area you chose, ditch it down.

u/Lazrath · 2 pointsr/DIY

I was thinking the same thing, LED strip lights and a power supply can be had for cheap i.e.

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00HSF64JG/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_?ie=UTF8&psc=1

The linked LED strip even came with a barrel connector already connected and ready to plug in, as well as a secondary connector, just cut to get the desired amount of light, then peel and stick.

I just redid my mother's under cabinet kitchen(note: I used the waterproof version of those) lighting for like $30, previously she spent like $300 on expensive proprietary LED pucks(that she can't even buy any more) and electrician to hard wire it(I piggy backed my power supply off the touch power switch for the LED pucks and installed an inline rocker switch on the power cord that went to the power supply I used)

2 rolls for the battery operated one ($14 CAD each, local Toronto electronics store) and 6 rolls of this from Amazon: http://www.amazon.ca/gp/product/B00HSF64JG?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_detailpage_o02_s00

Two rolls for the small window, 4 rolls for the large one. You have to wire each roll to the power supply in parallel or it gets dim at the end.

u/jamminred · 2 pointsr/Hue

I used two of these hooked up together.
I like this route a little better because they are controllable from any hue app or the hue API. With the API your vera can also control these through Hue hub.

u/cartermatic · 2 pointsr/Hue

It largely depends on how much length you need. If you only need a few feet, the regular light strips from Phillips are your best bet. If you're doing long runs, it can be a lot cheaper to go 3rd party.

I ran about 30 feet for my apartment using 3rd party, and spent a little over $100. I compared it to the light strips and it would have been around $450 using just light strips. So far the integration has been super easy.

Here's what I bought:

1x FLS-PP for $55 (this is what you use to control the lights via the Hue app)

1x 12v power supply for $12

1x set of pigtails (only needed one of them, so a local AV or tech store might sell individual ones) for $5

2x 16ft SUPERNIGHT RWBWW LED Strips for $17/ea

They aren't as bright and as uniform as the Hue Lightstrips, but you get what you pay for. The Hue Lighstrips are $90 for 6.5feet, and I would have needed 5 boxes total, so $450 just for the strips.

u/TexasGrill · 2 pointsr/homeassistant

I'm using SUPERNIGHT RGBW LED Strip and a SUPERNIGHT 12V 30A Switching Power Supply.

I followed the guide that came with the controller to get it pared. Just wasn't what I was expecting. I was hopeful for a color wheel type of control instead of the multiple switches.

u/Dostoyevskitty · 2 pointsr/succulents

I use to have LED lights (90W LED grow light, 2 inches above my cactus) and they were pretty happy, except the pinkish blue color really hurts my eye and make my room like Christmas year round. I switched to a 125W CFL and a 4x 24w T5HO (both around 10000lm, 2-3 inches above the plant). so far I couldn't tell the difference other than a couple dollar more in power bill and a lot more pleasant light.

none of my cactus etiolated under those lights yet (4 months under LED and 2 under CFL/T5HO) so far I like the CFL better because I can upgrade it to a 200w/switch the spectrem to red easily to induce flower. but that sum up all the experience I have with lights, hopefully it helps

u/HAFwit75 · 2 pointsr/hydro

I am currently in the process of building one of these OpenAg Food Computers and this item is not on the list that I purchased. I do have some white LED adhesive strips off amazon, which it looks right now that they will be for illumination of the computer side of the unit. Inside the growth chamber we have two Erligpowht 45W LED: https://www.amazon.com/Erligpowht-Indoor-Garden-Plant-Hanging/dp/B00S2DPYQM/ref=sr_1_fkmr2_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1443799150&sr=8-2-fkmr2&keywords=grow+led+panel+erwl

These will be the main source of lighting growing the plants. The white LEDs are only for visual appeal, which I'm assuming would be the same for those LEDs by GE.

So I think something like this may work well.

Ryzen 7 1700 with 16GB RAM, with a GTX 1060. Should be more than enough power for your needs.

Lots of storage with a 525GB SSD for main boot drive, and a 2TB for mass storage. You could also bump up to a 4TB if needed.

Edit-Small case with side window[Fractal Design Define NANO S - Coolest New ITX Case Around?] (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aVTuZYJ1wZo)

, and 2x140mm RGB lit fans. The 2 extra fans would need to be mounted at the front of the case

You could also use a LED light strip if you wanted instead of the fans https://www.amazon.com/eTopxizu-Computer-RGB-control-Flexible/dp/B00W3HZTPE

Thanks!

The screen doesn't sit 100% flush with my wall. There was literally just enough room for the led strip that I ran around the velvet on the back side. At first I had stuck it on the metal portion, but this causes a lot of light to bleed into the screen so I moved it onto the velvet.

I'd say there was about 1/8th of an inch gap.

These are the lights I got: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00WRDG9CQ/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_6i4Yxb3G3DRS2

You can't tell from the GIF, but I ran the LED strip twice along the underside of the top of the desk. This helped make it a bit brighter. After that I still had a bunch of LED tape left so I rolled it up and hung it off the back of my computer monitor. This added a lot of glow to the back wall which I thought looked pretty nice.

My main lighting is CFL, so I’m a little confused as to what you’re asking. If you’re asking about the LED strips, this is what I got:

u/EXACTLY25SCHMECKLES · 2 pointsr/SpaceBuckets

I haven't had any problems with the non-waterproof strips. I usually take my plants out of their containers to water, so I haven't worried about them. However, if I were to buy more side lighting I would get more of these warm white 5630 waterproof strips. Their spectrum is a little cooler than the 7020s and they seem somewhat brighter as well.

u/arise420 · 2 pointsr/SpaceBuckets

They are incredibly bright and very helpful! Here.

u/CraftyScotsman · 2 pointsr/SpaceBuckets

I had a look on Amazon.com and the "Amazon choice" one at $49.99 would be sufficient for 1 plant in enclosed conditions like a spacebucket.

https://www.amazon.com/Rolledro-Lights-Indoor-Spectrum-Hydroponics/dp/B00RWYCRB2

Then you will want to get a 5630 led strip for side lighting. Like this:

https://www.amazon.com/LEDMO-Flexible-Daylight-Waterproof-brightness/dp/B01339G2F6

Although I wouud recommend searching on Amazon for "5630 led strip" and looking for one that is both waterproof, adhesive backed and has a usb connector for easy installation. The one I linked is just the LED strip on its own.

u/SenorFluffy · 2 pointsr/SpaceBuckets

This is the one that I got. They are 5630s: https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B01339G2F6/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o03_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Here's what my spacer looks like. Ignore the sick plant. She's doing better. :)

But I think it would be fine if to even make a spacer with the LED strips just don't make them as dense as I did. I just got lazy and didn't want to cut the strip.

u/_-_-C · 2 pointsr/battlestations

put monitors on one side, tower on the other. Or put the monitors on one side, tower in the middle, and controllers/headset/mic/etc. on the other side. I'm using these to hold power strips, it's only going to work for the long skinny ones though. IKEA has one that can hold a wider variety of sizes. Based on the shadow and graininess of the pic I am guessing you only have a ceiling light? You could add a lamp on one side and one of these on the other. If you want to continue with the green color scheme, you could get one of these orb things and an rgb led strip

u/BugSTi · 2 pointsr/buildapcsales

Here are the amazon.ca links. The LED strip is a bit different but it is almost the same. You can control the colors on the litle dongle connected to it. Not a professional by any means, but I'll answer to the best of my ability.

  1. the motherboard has wifi on it (it's on the top with the two screw ins like a coaxial cable). In the box will have two small antennas which you'll screw them in and should have Wi-Fi then.

  2. RAM looks compatible, looks good (highly recc G Skillz Trident-Z, good brand)

  3. iprofixit toolkit: https://www.ifixit.com/Store/Tools/Pro-Tech-Toolkit/IF145-307-4?gclid=CjwKCAjw0oveBRAmEiwAzf6_rAYymiWQaies8QBB6z3XvDSZBq3lkAe58uCfUt9mKSn_NXwbBS2xKxoCT-UQAvD_BwE

  4. if you have a good corner, a good L desk is sweet. They're very nice especially if you like to have space for anything while being on the computer (like homework, accessories, etc...)

  5. You do not, most graphics cards have 1 Display port (which you connect Monitor #1 too) and a few more HDMI slots (like 2-3) to plug in your alternate monitors :)

  6. the case looks solid, and as long as it fits your motherboard + Power Supply Unit, everything should fit all snug.

  7. there's quite a few good recommendations, I would rec this:  https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01LQS65BM/ref=cm_sw_r_fm_apa_.ZcXBbS1EBEQE

The only thing is that the USB will stay powered for 15 minutes after you turn off the TV. Get the Large if you want it to all the way around the back of the TV. I get a lot of compliments on the way it looks and think it makes the TV picture look sharper and darker. The TCL has a horrible backlight and this fixes that somewhat.

https://www.amazon.com/SUPERNIGHT-Remote-Controller-Light-Strip/dp/B00AF5YOK2/ref=sr_1_4?s=hi&ie=UTF8&qid=1486776685&sr=1-4&keywords=led+strip+with+IR

Hue is also Unbelievably low tech for the price tag, there are light strips that have individual ICs allowing you to set specific colors on every led separately.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PBm_Uu9dzh4

if you go hue strip route , no, you dont need a bridge, you can easily communicate ST <> Harmony <> Hue.

If the blinds are not automated, there might also be a light strip for accent lighting.

Ah okay, thank you. I was looking at something like this:

https://www.amazon.com/SUPERNIGHT-Remote-Controller-Wireless-Control/dp/B00AF5YOK2/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1525203776&sr=8-3&keywords=rgb+controller

But I'm assuming I have to buy 3 of them since they only have 1 cord.

u/FrostyNugs · 1 pointr/SpaceBuckets

I don't think there's a buying guide, unfortunately

I'm going to use this Power Supply with this Adapter for this LED String along with this RGB Controller

u/XIIGage · 1 pointr/pcmasterrace

Oh yeah I guess I should post that. I have had the components for a while, just needed to upgrade my case because I still had an old Thermaltake armor series case that weighed (no joke) 70 pounds.

Specs are:

i7-4770k

EVGA 980ti

16GB DDR3

240GB Crucial SSD

256GB AData SSD

1TB Seagate Storage Drive

LEDs are just some cheap RGB ones I found on Amazon:

http://www.amazon.com/SUPERNIGHT-Changing-Flexible-Remote-Control/dp/B00BP4GNRY?ie=UTF8&psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_detailpage_o04_s00

I had to modify the power connector so I could plug it into a PC power supply.

u/psisarah · 1 pointr/Hue

Addressable LEDs (WS2xxx, NeoPixel, etc) will not work at all with Hue unless you build some sort of controller which intercepts the signal between a Hue-compatible controller and the strip. These LEDs work completely differently.

RGB LED = These are the ones used with Hue strips. Color is controlled per strip and individual lights can not be controlled. A voltage signal is sent giving power to each red, blue or green (white if its RGBW). Brightness combinations create colors.

Addressable LED = Data is sent to control each LED individually via code. Some strips have just a data pin, some of the ones from Adafruit have a data and clock pin. These have constant voltage from the 5v line and send signals to change color per-led.

Aside from the way these strips behave, they also use different voltages. Hue strips, and generic SMD5050 strips, use 12v. Most of the addressable strips are 12v. You will ruin a 5v strip if you shoot 12v through it.

Now, you can buy any generic SMD5050 led strip and connect it to a Hue-compatible controller. I've done that with these and it works fine, though had to solder the connections since the green and blue were backwards on the pins.

tl;dr Addressable LEDs will not work with the Hue system.

My recommendation would to be look for objects with a lot of visual texture. Stuccowalls are the trippiest thing to look at while up.

Get these: http://www.amazon.com/SUPERNIGHT-Changing-Flexible-Remote-Control/dp/B00BP4GNRY/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1452560811&sr=8-3&keywords=rgb+led+lights

Had a buddy line the top of their living room with them. Instantly able to change the color of the room. Tricolor strobing is amazing, and seven color fade can make any space way more interesting. Some people can't deal with their harshness though.

Get something like this and stick it on the back of your desk. Assuming its against the wall it'll illuminate the back really well. You could continue it underneath your desk for an underglow effect as well.

I had undercabinet florescent with power coming directly into them, and I replaced them with a combination of led strip lighting, diffusers and individual power supplies. Then I changed the switch to a GE z-wave. Here's a list of the products I used:

Power Supply: ($14 x 3)
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B017R17YQC/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&psc=1

LED Lights: ($8) https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00HSF64JG/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Diffusers: ($26)

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00PJSUZSK/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Zwave Switch (now they are $38, but I got some on clearance for $21)

https://www.amazon.com/GE-Wireless-Lighting-Required-14291/dp/B01M1AHC3R/ref=sr_1_2_sspa?ie=UTF8&qid=1519156674&sr=8-2-spons&keywords=ge+zwave&psc=1

All in all I replaced lighting under the three main cabinets and the total cost was under $100. I'm not sure it was the best way to do it, but it works! For my application dimming wasn't what I was looking for, but I think you could swap out some parts for the dimmable versions.

I install a lot of SMD LED strips. I have had good luck with these. http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B00HSF64JG?cache=27cdb7082ac1067e2e4766bf86b4860d&pi=SY200_QL40&qid=1412750393&sr=8-3#productDescription_secondary_view_pageState_1412750433171
They use .5 Amps per Meter. You will need 4 rolls so you will also need a12Volt power supply rated at 10 Amps and 120 Watts. Something like this would work. http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B00LWQ2GS0?cache=27cdb7082ac1067e2e4766bf86b4860d&pi=SY200_QL40&qid=1412750809&sr=8-2#ref=mp_s_a_1_2
To control them you will need a dimmer or simple on-off switch. I would suggest a remote dimmer. Like this one. http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B009C34ZV6?cache=27cdb7082ac1067e2e4766bf86b4860d&pi=AC_SX110_SY165_QL70&qid=1412751212&sr=8-12#ref=mp_s_a_1_12
I personally prefer warm white for indirect lighting in a kitchen area. Cool white can be a bit harsh bouncing off the ceiling.

u/hunsuckercommando · 1 pointr/vandwellers

Here's the basic mods I went with for our Vandura. We wanted to keep it simple and get it done in a couple months. Since I work full-time, time was the major constraining factor. We only use ours for a weekend fun vehicle so your needs may be different. We like ours, but it's definitely not Instagram worthy. I'm assuming yours has the conversion setup inside (wood paneling etc.) so it should be similar

- Replace the factory valence and center lighting with LEDs. The stock lights are garbage and one of the valence lights shorted out with the previous owner and was a safety issue. We used multi-colored dimmable lights for the center ( https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07ML5ZJQR/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o08_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 ) and simple LEDs for the valence ( https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00HSF64JG/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o09_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 ). After install the valence lights are SUPER bright; in retrospect, I'd use just one strip for all three valence lights

- Remove the rear captains chairs and install vinyl flooring in the middle. We have an electrically driven sofa/bed in the back that we wanted to keep in case we need extra legal seating, so we only installed flooring in the middle portion of the van between the cab and rear sofa seating. We found some vinyl "planks" at Walmart for dirt cheap (~$20 for the whole area) but the adhesive they came with didn't work great, especially with drastic temp changes. I'd suggest going with single sheet vinyl or laminate or, at the very least, using liquid nails as a substitute adhesive.

- Built a counter space/storage cabinet. I just used basic sideboard plans found on the internet. This stores our aux battery, fuse block, inverter and gives some additional storage space

- Install a battery isolator, aux battery, fuse block, inverter etc. We went with the Battery Doctor isolator ( https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0058SGDFK/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o05_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 ) because of the added ability to use the aux battery to supplement the starter battery in emergencies

- Install forced air ventilation. I didn't want to cut through the roof for a MaxxAir fan because we liked the lighting. Since the conversion van has 3 sets of sliding windows, we created a make-shift side vent fans out of 12V computer fans ( https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B072NCYQRY/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o03_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 ). Three fans fit in each sliding window. Each fan is rated at 52CFM so (in theory) we get ~200-300CFM with two windows (eventually I'll get accurate measures with an anemometer just for curiosity's sake). Since we don't cook in the van and the van has multiple windows that open, this just helps the forced airflow to prevent condensation while sleeping.

- Upgraded the CRT TV to a flat screen ( https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B06X3VH4VK/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o01_s01?ie=UTF8&psc=1 ). Side note: the TV remote IR frequency changes the color of the multi-color LEDs. Maybe you can get around this with a different LED setup. We just turn the TV on before the lights to get around it

- Wired the TV, vent fans, and center lights to the aux battery. We originally had the valence lights hooked to it too, but since they're so damn bright we never used them and I reconnected them to the starter battery.

- Eventually, I'll build a storage compartment in the back that also opens to a table out the back hatch.

- So far, we're happy with just a cooler between the cab chairs. If we eventually go to a 12V fridge, we'll probably need another battery which doesn't make economic sense for what we use the van for

That is a ton of light for a living room, and if you're using incandescent bulbs, a lot of heat, too.

It appears the strip goes 12V/B/R/G/W. Is there any way to switch the wiring to be compatible with my mobo?

u/PM_ME_YOUR_TRADRACK · 1 pointr/homeautomation

The time trigger is probably 90% of the time, unless we go to bed early then Ill use the dash button (via dasher and ifttt) or voice (google assistant via ifttt) interchangeably. There is a 3-5 second delay with both but otherwise work great. Id use voice more but ok google with the pixel isnt reliable.

I have this strip running around our bed. I have it set brightness 10, which seems to be perfect at night. The strip itself is cheap but does the job. First attempt at LED so I diidnt want to spend to much.. Control it via the fibaro z wave controller.

Let me know if you have any other questions!

u/HapaHaole13 · 1 pointr/homeautomation

In my example, I believe I would need 3 FLS-PP IP Zigbee ballasts ($55ea), 1-2 RGBW LED strips ($17ea), 3 power adaptors ($17ea), a splitter (~$15ea), and 4 ethernet cable adaptors (~$20 total). Grand total ~$268 on the conservative end + tax.

Or I could buy 3 Hue lightstrips ($90ea), splitter (~$15ea), and 4 ethernet cable adaptors (~$20 total). Grand total ~$305 + tax.

I could save ~$40 or bite the bullet and know that my current ecosystem will work seamlessly with the Hue lightstrips. Either way its not cheap but there are trade offs to going the DIY route.

Please disprove my estimates/theory, I would happily pay less for a setup with equal functionality :)

P.S. I'll add links to the items listed above but I'm on the train commuting in and the wifi sucks :/

Right now I have three of these, they're dirt cheap and it really shows in the construction quality (cheap plastic, fiberboard back, zero waterproofing, included hanging wires are useless) but they work extremely well and the cons are pretty easily overcome. I have mine mounted with small zip ties to the underside of the shelf above the growing area which keeps it safe from water and damage and removes the need for the crappy mounting wire. The oldest one has been on 14 hours a day for four months and is working as well as the day I got it. Here's my new seedling set up that is a slight improvement over the one that produced the plants shown right now I have Droseras finlaysoniana, venusta, tokianesis, Filiformis red, auriculata, hookeri, Nidiformis, Capensis, and burmannii either germinating or as small plants and will be sewing binata, Capensis wide leaf, and intermedia cuba next week, plus I have a tray of ~50 sensitive plants, 8 dancing plants, 15 drosyphylum, and a couple desert rose seeds all germinating in a greenhouse. The plan is to sell most of the drosera at the end of the summer if they're big enough and make back some of what I've spent collecting.

You can always get a cheap set of LED strips to stick inside your PC that come with a remote that allows you to pick between 15 or so colors. I put my intakes towards the top of the bucket and my exhaust fan in the lid. It mostly depends on what type of pot you're going to use. If it fills your bucket then you'll want to have them high enough so the air isn't blocked. If there's some space around it then you could go lower but be sure to leave a little space at the bottom if you plan to make a drainage tray. I planned my bucket with a 3 gallon smart pot in mind so i kept the intakes high enough to not be obstructed. There's a link to my first bucket in my profile as Ekropf was kind enough to put it on spacebuckets.com. I haven't taken pics of my 2nd bucket yet, but it's similar. That site has lots of great pictures and info. If you do end up using an intake fan you'll want to mount it somewhere that doesn't blow directly on the top of your pot as it will dry out the top layer of the medium too quickly so the wet/dry cycle will be tough to maintain.
I can't stress the passive intake enough. I was very much of the opinion that I was going to have 1 intake and 1 exhaust fan but some very good people here pointed me in the right direction before I started building. You can see the thread and comments in my profile. (Hoping I can pass along the knowledge I gained. The people on this subreddit are awesome and helped me immensely.) I was very pleasantly surprised by the pvc elbows. They're only about 80 cents each and since I had already ordered 2 fans I made a 2nd bucket. Also, if odor control is important to you then you'll want to maintain negative pressure in your bucket. Intake fans can lead to positive pressure and air leak whereas passive will guarantee negative pressure. Just Google it if you haven't read about it yet.

Regarding the fans; here's what I bought. They're plug and play for a regular outlet.
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B009OWRMZ6/ref=ya_st_dp_summary
I also got lamp dimmers for my fans and they work great. Here's a link but I found them for 7 bucks at a local home store similar to Lowes or Home Depot.

I'd recommend getting a temp/humidity weather monitor and try your bucket with 1 fan first. You can always install a 2nd if needed. It's important to check temp/humidity with your pot and medium in the bucket...I found its much different than an empty bucket. Something like this...
http://www.amazon.com/AcuRite-00611A3-Wireless-Thermometer-Humidity/dp/B001B35APA

I found cheap bricks of coco at Petsmart. It's also used for bedding/substrate in reptile terrariums. Roughly 6 bucks for 8 quarts...add about 30% perlite or vermiculite and you can easily fill a 2-3 gallon pot.

If you have any more questions, feel free to pm me. I highly suggest looking through spacebuckets.com though...it'll give you lots of different ideas and you'll be able to see how they work before building your bucket.

Hope this helps!

These lights and unfortunately atm i cannot get an approximate distance but i can recall the tops of the plants are maybe 3 spacers away from the light ? ik they are starting to get close and i planned on making more spacers next weekend. other than the main i’ve got this strip along the halfway height of the plants.

I would instead get a roll of the newer/larger SMD6530 LED's (25 lumens per LED) ($10.99), plus power($5-10) and a simple on/off switch ($4-5).

Brighter, cheaper, and you have the remaining 14-15 FEET of LED's for under shelf lighting or other projects around the house/garage!

Great also for gun safes, garages, etc. You can put a rotary dimmer, or IR motion detector on them as well!

GL!

Almost any bulb should work ok as long as it is near the 6500k range like you've read about already.

I've used various brands of both CFL and LED lights successfully.

I eventually started using strip lights with a 12vdc power source attached the bottom side of my fruiting chamber lid.

The application is for lighting an archery target with LED strips each night for ~3-4 hours a night to allow the range to stay open. This is in central california so there is plenty of sun during the day and nights aren't excessively long. I feel like the sealed lead acid battery will cause problems due to the low number (200-300) charge cycles they can go through. What do you mean by saying the 12v battery is not 12v? I feel like I won't need a 30W solar panel but I'm not sure. I will most likely use a store bought charge controller like mrCloggy suggested, but I'm wondering if I can wire that up to the lipo battery. I would like to use these http://www.amazon.com/LEDMO-Flexible-Daylight-Waterproof-brightness/dp/B01339G2F6/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1454112286&sr=8-1&keywords=5630+Flexible+Led+Strip if possible which seem to be a 72W led strip, but I will use lower power http://www.amazon.com/Triangle-Bulbs-T93007-Waterproof-Flexible/dp/B005EHHLD8/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1454112451&sr=8-1&keywords=waterproof+led+strip if needed. Do yourself a favor and use a strip designed for 5V operation instead. Something like this or this. That way you can use it in conjunction with a rechargeable USB power bank. They also make USB inline switches if you need one.

It's a LED RGB strip I purchased from Amazon 3 years ago (https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00DTOAWZ2/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_A3xyxb8Y0DWKW).

The one behind the TV is a RGB LED strip connected to the USB port (https://www.amazon.com/dp/B015R44RZC/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_44xyxb5TAQ4Y3).

u/Magneticitist · 1 pointr/electricians

There are tons of different ways to accomplish this.. But I'd say by far the easiest way for you to do what you need to do without hassle is buying something like this. It has color changing leds but if you don't like that I'm sure you can find other ~5v RGB strips.

This is ideal since the strip is already designed to accept 5v via USB and that's much easier to accomplish via batteries than a usual 12v or 120v strip for example. You could probably power the strip via 3 AA batteries in series, costing you the price of a battery holder. No need for larger series of cells or any kind of extra driver for the leds.

If you have soldering skills, there a few quality strips on Amazon. Deep Dream usually makes good products. Make sure there Blacklight enabled.

Also with UV be very careful on the wavelength you buy. You want something in the 380 to 405nm. Anything below 380 can be dangerous for your eyes and sometimes skin(These are more blue then purple).

If your outside the US and can't get ahold of Darkside, Nanoxia also creates good UV lighting as well. I'm not a fan on how they attach there LED connector. Everything else is solid.

Of course CCFL UV (High Quality versions). Still create the best UV effect. You also have to deal with the inverter. MonSoon makes the best CCFL in my experience.

How long? RGB (white is blueish) or RGBW (extra white LED)?

This seems to be the same model I used for a project (giant lamp). Worked perfectly fine. Afaik if you got yourself another controller it'd respond to the same remote.

You can cut the stripes as you see fit and reconnect them. You'd need something like this for easy connection when you cut it up. As an extension cable you can use whatever you like as long as it provides 5 wires.

u/MrBilbro · 1 pointr/watercooling

The brand i got was LDH. Here Most of them are very similar. I think cablemods is very overpriced but, I hear they're good. I already had a SATA 12 power adapter so you may want to find a kit that has one of those.

u/tbrozovich · 1 pointr/homeautomation

Awesome. Okay so just to clarify (sorry), I know I could use the hand controller provided with these lights, but if I got the H801 controller, I could change the lights with an app on my phone for now. Is this correct? Then going forward I could get this controller to hook up to Smartthings.

I have 3 zones total, the wall art, and 2 sets of cabinets I would want to light. Would I need 3 of these controllers, one for each run of LED lights? And then I would need to use the app to turn on each run individually?

If you recommend a different H801 controller would you be able to link that to me?

Thanks again for your time.

Edit: Thoughts on this controller?

u/cyclonus101 · 1 pointr/pcmasterrace

You have 3 choices in LEDs, traditional PWM 12V based which I think you're better off buying from amazon.com because they have tons of kits. This for example, also note that these strips are non-addressable AKA no unique color per LED.

WS2812B/WS2813 are the common choice for addressable LED strips. You can get 1m/60 LEDs<$10 from ebay, but again amazon has options. (Strip) and (controller).

Then there's the APA102 an addressable RGB LED which you don't want because they're way more expensive.

Although I guess from the time submitted and the fact you want to buy from ebay means your shopping from Australia?

I've bought all 3 kinds and every WS2812B (1m/30 and rings I've bought worked fine. I've yet to try the APA102 and the traditional 12V RGB strip.

I zip tie the extra wire of the lights to the battery pack. Then I use that industrial adhesive to stick it to the board. It works really well, I've never had anything fall off using that stuff. I take some gaff tape and put it over all of the components. For the light strips themself, I used the adhesive they have on them to stick to the bottom. That's holding up really well. For the side ones I use a glue gun to stick them on. Those ones require a little fixing up every month or so, banging the board around will unglue them over time. The portable battery for these don't make any noise. It lasts a long time running two strips before needing recharged.
