-If you use your music unlimited trial, make sure to turn off the auto-renewal.
-If your TV supports RGB Full, enable it on BOTH the TV and PS4. Use a calibration image in the web browser to see that all of the blacks are correct (you should see different shaded squares).

Really, aside making sure you don't get suckered into paying for music unlimited it's pretty plug and play. I did see a huge difference by enabling RGB full on my TV and PS4 though. Some TV's don't support it. The hard drive is optional, but the games 40-50gb and the stock hard drive will only fit 8-9 of them.

Don't mean to bash but WD has a way lower failure rate than Seagate does.

WD My Book for a larger, external powered drive if you're mainly going to leave it on your desk and plugged in all the time. 1 to 4TB capacities available.
Toshiba Canvio for a bit more budget conscious but still reliable choice. From 1 to 3TB.
I'm currently using a pair of 1TB Passports that stay in the photo bags and get used for transfers and backups in the field. They get pretty abused and still work great. I'm using a 3TB Toshiba for storage at home and it's also been a great performer.
Buy the largest you can afford. 500GB may sound like a lot, but it really isn't. I don't know the volume of photos you take but I generated 442GB of photos last year. This year, I'm at 582GB and counting.

If you are looking for an external HDD I can suggest a Western Digital MyBook. I have the 3TB version because it was only 20 euro's more expensive then the 2TB at the time.
Also if you happen to play battlefield, you get to pick the vehicles first, since this one loads relatively quick. (I can almost always pick first)

Don't do it. You have no idea what brand / quality of drive is inside that enclosure, and on top of that, both Seagate and WD have external USB3 3TB drives on Amazon at $99.
Also, you should check any local Walmart locations around you. It seems they're clearancing a lot of their HDDs, including 3TB units from Toshiba, Seagate, and WD. I picked up several in the $50 range yesterday morning. There are numerous threads about this on Slickdeals.

So in this case buying a Duo saves you ~170USD. However the disks inside only have a 2yr warranty vs 3 for the whole thing. But for that price, You could probably get a separate thirdparty warranty.
Everyone here seems to be pushing hard on various cloud solutions; but either they haven't actually read all of your requirements, or are ignoring them:

Even on a GigE connection it would still take 11.5 days to download a raw version of that, and if you managed to get a 90% compression rate, that's still ~28 hours of just downloading data.
Right now; these appear to be the cheapest 8TB drives (ignoring the Archive drives which are so slow on bulk writes it would take months to back everything up). So without any parity, you need 14 of those for 100GB raw (8TB drives have 7.3T usable).
If you can play around with your compression and get it < 15TB - which for plain text isn't unthinkable) you can look around for the 16TB WD MyBook for around $500

One thing many people are not aware of, is that backup external drives are not meant to be on and connected 24/7 - well most of them. Quite often the controller fails after a period of time.
Not to say that is what is happening here, but what you described is symptomatic of such a failure. You could always try to get the drive into another case and you may be able to recover from there (unlikely but possible).

Do you take regular BTRFS snapshots? If so then the data might still be there.
For offsite, the simplest solution would be a USB drive that you keep at work or a friend's house. (You should probably encrypt your data first.) Amazon has a 3TB drive for $70. It's a pretty slow drive so if you had to restore the whole 900GB, it would take about 6 hours.
Your money might be better spent just getting a large capacity external HDD. I got a 3TB Western Digital Passport and it is fantastic.

WD is a reputable brand. This one's pretty cheap and works great. I have one plugged into my Ps4
TL;DR get the WD Easy Store it the best and in your price range at the moment.
WD Easy Store is a great external drive. The drive inside is usually a WD Red which is far better than the WD Blues in the WD My Book. The My Book isn't bad but its just that you can get the Easy Store for 89.99 right now where as the My Book is 99.99. The Easy Store also goes on sale a lot with its more expensive sister, the legendary 8tb Easy Store.
Alternatively if neither are available to you for what ever reason I guess you can also get the Seagate Backup Plus. The internal drive is an SMR drive which can be a bit slow at times. All around its about on the same level as the WD Blue in the My Book. A lot of people hate Seagate for many reasons such as the 3tb fiasco and their reputation for lower reliability, but I personally don't have a strong vendetta against them like others do. The Plus also has a built in USB hub which I personally love and me and my brother use all the time. The Plus is also 99.99, same as the My Book.
It seems like you are not going for any sort of redundancy system like RAID and instead use this drive like normal as an external hard drive, so I would strongly advise you stay away from anything refurbished. Refurbished is only great in systems using RAID so drive failure is not as much of an issue. I have nothing against using refurbished its just more of a gamble to take since the failure rate of a refubished hard drive is completely unknown to you. Each refurbisher is going to be different, and each drive is going to be a different case where it is in its life. You can save a lot of money buying a 3tb Hitachi Ultrastar for only 49.99, but you would need to buy an adapter if you want to use it as an external hard drive.

May I suggest instead looking at 8TB drives? It's become really popular over at /r/datahoarder to buy a 16TB WD My Book Duo and harvest the two 8TB WD Red drives inside them, making them essentially $250 each. WAY cheaper per TB than pretty much anything else, and they are really solid drives.
Buy this 16tb external and copy your stuff to it from time to time.
If you HAVE to go 8TB drives, you would be better off getting 8 of these and shucking the WD 8TB Reds that are inside. The drives you linked are SMR and as such aren't made for 24/7 use and are slow as molasses especially when it comes to writes. They are archive drives for a reason. They are made to be filled and then...archived. If you go with what I linked, you'd be looking at an increase of of $554 (or 14%) which isn't much when you are looking to drop nearly $4k anyways.
I don’t have an easy answer for you. I have been looking for an 8TB drive for some time now myself, and have spent far too much time comparing options. I would love to hear everyone’s opinion!

Seagate has the highest failure rate of all major HDD manufacturers. I would consider a comparable Western Digital instead. Looks like they're out of stock on the 2 TB for a couple more days, but they have other sizes in stock, and it comes in a multitude of colors.

I use a 4TB WD My Book on my Xbox One X, and an 8TB WD My Book on my PS4 Pro. Not a single corruption, disconnect, or issue to speak of. I personally prefer an external hard drive that is in constant use to be wall powered instead of USB powered, but that's just my preference.
On both consoles, the external drives load games about 10-15% quicker on average (I timed a few games like Fallout 4, Dragon Age, The Witcher 3, etc). They're faster than the internal drives by a bit (unless you put an SSD inside your console). 3.5" drives (external storage drives and inside desktop computers) are faster than their 2.5" counterparts (usually used inside game consoles, laptops, etc.)
That's my recommendation.

At this point its likely better to wait for 10TB sales, as 8TB drives seem stuck at a certain price-point. The price of the 10 TB drives moves closer and closer to that of current 8TB drives (until the price of the 8TB drives begins to drop further below $99)
Also the 10TB drives are reported to use less energy and are more silent (not sure, cant confirm yet).

I use the iView 3500STBII for my antenna DVR, and it works great. It even has the capability to store locally stored media files if you load it onto a HDD, and plug it into your STB. The iView 3500STBII is under $35 at Amazon, and a 1TB USB 3.0 HDD is under $55 at Amazon. It will support up to 3TB HDD's formatted to NTFS format. Be sure to get a USB 3.0 HDD for fastest read/write speeds.
The internal ATSC tuner is manufactured by Samsung according to the PCB when I opened up the case, and it has very good tuning capabilities. The outputs are HDMI, Coaxial, RCA, and composite, so it will be able to connect to any television manufactured after 1985. Even if you have a television from before that, it will work with a 300 ohm to 75 ohm balun hooked up to the VHF ports on the back of the TV.
The remote is a dual unit, and learns from your existing television remote. The "option" buttons can be programmed for whatever function you so choose. I set mine to be channel up and down. With the iView 3500STBII remote, your TV and converter box is controllable with only the STB remote.

The iView 3500STBII is basically an off-line media center, and is a new version of a VCR/DVD player. It's very very worth the $35 it will cost at Walmart or Amazon. Hell, if you wish, you can even use a VCR with it if you wire it up after the converter box. Here's how I have my setup wired.

I think this Acer Aspire E15-574G is the best right now. It sure is in the US, and I haven't seen anything in the UK yet to rival it either.
It has a Skylake i5-6200U, 8GB RAM, 256GB SSD, Nvidia 940MX graphics, a 15.6" 1920x1080 display, and really good battery life. It should handle your work no problem.
The one thing it doesn't have is a lot of storage. You kind of lose that with the 256GB SSD, but I think it's worth it. You can always get something like this external HDD to store anything large on, and it would still come in under budget.

I wanted to keep it to a terabyte or lower since the hard drive has to be dedicated to the Wii U due to Nintendo's encryption. I read reviews for both the hard drive and y cable and multiple users stated they worked well with their Wii U.

Pick up gear at the REI flagship in downtown Denver (maybe a little Sour Diesel while you are in Denver). Drive to Boulder, then Nederland. There are several lake shore camping options in the Indian Peaks and James Peak Wilderness. Indian Peaks requires a permit, but I don't believe it to be difficult or expensive. Options would include Diamond Lake, Jasper Lake, Woodland Lake. James Peak Wilderness directly to the south has Forest Lakes, Crater Lakes and rogers Pass Lake.
Bear Track Lakes in Mt Evans Wilderness is probably within your driving range in a southwesterly direction from Denver. I'm nat as familiar with that area. If you extend your range by 1 or two hours more stuff opens up. You should have plenty of options though. Have fun! Read up on mountain safety, i.e. bear country precautions, altitude sickness, being off high altitudes in the afternoon, etc. It's easy to be safe, you just have to be aware. My recommendation is to go between last week in June and mid August for the best weather, wild flowers etc. Best to do a good layer system with non-cotton layers and expect anything with the weather up there, could get down to 20-30 degrees in summer. I always use a 20 degree bag and sleep in merino long underwear.

Its more cheaper in my opinion and installation is pretty simple. All you need to do is open it download the software so that the hard drive functions on the ps4 and then just put it in. If you have ps plus your games data is saved in the cloud.
For me, the most obvious cons of external drives are:
Naturally, it's going to be quicker and easier to simply plug an external drive into a USB port, format it and go, as opposed to having to open up your PS4, remove the old HDD, install the new one, format it, backup/restore all your game data or re-download it all.
External HDD support hadn't been added at the time I upgraded the hard drive in my PS4, but even now, I'd still prefer to have all my data stored on one hard drive. It's an extra device to have to find somewhere to squeeze into my entertainment center and a PS4 with an external HDD connected via a USB cable hanging out the front of the console just doesn't look quite as neat as a PS4 with just a single internal HDD.
Swapping HDDs is basically a one and done upgrade that you never have to worry about again. Connecting an external drive means that you have to worry about that HDD every time you move the console to clean or take it to a friend's house. Plus, since it has to be plugged directly into one of the PS4s USB ports, you will always have one less USB port to work with, a pain if you have a PSVR, multiple controllers, etc.
This is what I bought to upgrade my internal drive. I had never had any problems with load times, so I wasn't really trying to find the fastest possible drive. This one has been in two PS4s (OG PS4 and now my Pro) and has been in use since July 31, 2015 and I've never had an issue with it, even after countless power outages that resulted in my PS4's power being cut abruptly. I've been happy with it so far, and spent far less than what a SSD would cost, but again, speeds weren't a priority for me.

Picked up a HGST Touro S
Can confirm it loads faster than stock. Forza Horizon was faster loading and restarting races was basically instant instead of it pausing for 2 seconds.
Evolve alpha was also a lot faster. I know load times in that game were painfully bad to begin with and the devs are addressing it.
Even still, I was always the first one to load in and had to wait about 20+ seconds more until the rest of the team were in. Like I said, the gap probably won't be as wide when they fix the loading on that game, but I still think if you want shorter load times, it's def worth it to get an external drive.
The one I linked is cheaper depending on color and storage size. The silver 500gb is only $56.99 as I write this. It's the one I bought and works well.

Looking at this.... You'll be immensely happier just buying a 3-4TB external and adopting it to the machine. The 100$ you save by going the 16gig shield route... you can put to buying a drive like this and be much better off. Side note... The shield unit can natively emulate everything up to about the dreamcast era of games. Most dreamcast play okay... some gamecube play as well, but most don't. XBOX and PS2 don't play at all that I have found.
You can do everything up to n64/ps1/saturn(no nintendo ds since you can't emulate touch on the console) era in about 1.82 TB[according to my library] including mame and CHDs. I don't know if the MAME CHD games play well on the shield natively, I haven't tested them.
But I do know that USB based joysticks like the X-arcade sticks work(don't know about the trackball).
Edit: Also, transferring large amounts of files is terrible on the shield. There aren't any real good file explorers for the shield. So it's much easier to just unplug a USB drive and bring it over to the computer and put the files on yourself than wait forever for a network transfer over ES file Explorer.

1.) You can get my favorite 2TB external hard drive now for under $100. Unless you've already gotten an S that's a much cheaper way of getting extra storage.
2.) Grab the free Games with Gold for this month if you haven't already. You get 48 Xbox One and backwards compatible Xbox 360 games a year this way, and I highly recommend Forza Horizon (even if you don't like racing you can still drive around at your leisure) and Mirror's Edge, with Earthlock and Assassin's Creed Chronicles China shaping up to be solid.
3.) Get EA Access. Even without any of the sports games, it's awesome to be able to get Battlefield 4 and Hardline, Dead Space, Plants vs Zombies Garden Warfare 2, Unravel, and Titanfall, all of which are far more valuable than the $30/year membership.
4.) My favorite exclusives are Gears 1-Judgment (which I got from preordering Gears Of War Ultimate Edition and you can get by preordering Gears Of War 4 or installing your old 360 discs or digital copies if applicable), Halo The Master Chief Collection, Sunset Overdrive, and Titanfall.
5.) Get Life is Strange. You and even your non gamer friends and family members will thank me later.
Would this be worth pairing with a hard drive enclosure to work as an XB1 hard drive?
Looks like with the $5 discount and the the enclosure, it would total $70 before tax. So it would be 7,200 RPMs speed using this bulkier setup vs. $86 for a 5,400 Game Drive that has the same storage capacity. I have no idea if it would need some type of formatting or would be plug and play though. But a cheaper price and better performance along with a free PC game is hard to pass up.
As I understand the deal with HP/T-Mobile, the deal is only with T-Mobile, so you would be paying AT&T. Not even sure it would work - I might try it and also contact AT&T.
You can download apps from the chrome web store (look for the icon in your "start" menu in the lower left) to use your Chromebook offline, like this one for Gmail. You'll have to download separate apps for each thing you want to be able to do offline, however.
You do NOT want to locally store your files, music & pictures on your Chromebook, as local storage is limited (you have maybe 32GB?). Your Chromebook should come with 100GB of storage on Google Drive, however - you can upload everything on your desktop to Drive, then it will be available when your Chromebook is online. If you don't want your stuff on the cloud, you can buy a portable hard drive for storage.

Cases are hard, especially at your price range. Read the reviews, make sure they can fit your pieces, and make sure the reviews say they have good cooling. I can't really make a recommendation at your price range. You have to decide what you are going to sacrifice to bring it under your budget.

Love these Toshiba Canvios. Pretty good pricing on them year round. I've had no issues on my 750gb over the past year and I just picked up a 1TB one for my girlfriend.
I would recommend using this OTA DVR between your Cable box and tv (or xbox one) and a USB stick or USB hard drive, Any type of USB storage is needed for the DVR function. (it can hold up to 2TB max per drive)
Once your cable is gone, you can attach an antenna to it and continue to use the DVR with your xbox one for Over the Air channels with the xbox one guide.

The only major update I'd add here is that the most recent generation of WD MyPassport drives have capacities up to 2TB, without the need for an external power source, making them very attractive all around drives.
I have a couple of these that I back up my whole PC to, and I've never had any issues. They come in a range of different sizes listed on the Amazon page. You'll only get the fastest transfer speed if you have a USB 3.0 port.

If you are going to do a lot of gaming on the machine then I say go for the SSD, just make sure to remove games from it when you are done with them and not leave them on it. I find that SSDs are easier to fill up than hard drives not just due to the small amount of storage but because I want everything to run faster. As long as you are careful you should be fine. I would recommend a 1TB external hard drive to keep your games on when you aren't using them so you don't have to download them all over again. You can get some really nice WesternDigital ones for about £60/$90.

Step 1) Buy an Audi MMI to USB cable. I'm not sure what version is correct for the 2015 A4 platform.

The USB ports are on the top, not the front, hope that's okay. The build has a fast dual core processor and will use its integrated graphics, for the usage you described it will be more than fine. 250GB SSD for storage. Otherwise that is a nice small build that has Wifi.

Well, I don't think the math works out. You would need at least 11x64GB USB 3.0 flash drives. At a minimum of $15 each you'd be looking at more than $160 in flash drives that aren't known for long term reliability and have read/write speeds that will frustrate most people for these long transfers.

I don't have any recommendations, but you'll pay a significant price premium (for the amount of space you get) if you go with an external SSD... Its quite cheap monetarily and i have had no issues. Keep in mind the games saves are stored only on the internal HD, so if there are any problems you won't lose your saves.
I have a couple of Western Digital My Passport drives that I use for movies and such. I would recommend buying one exclusively for Time Machine and using that to back up. Then buy one for your other random stuff. Time Machine doesn't like sharing drives, although you can if you partition it. But the drives are so inexpensive that it's easier to just buy one exclusive drive for it. Mine are 2TB and cost around $80-90:

A couple reasons. 1. Cost. 2. Simplicity: Realistically I am just dropping 1 folder of files per week on the drives. So a Raid system is not that necessary. 3. I keep one of the pairs at home and one at the office so that I have location protection and not just drive failure protection.

I picked up a WD my passport ultra 2 TB but I decided I wanted more space, so I bought a seagate backup plus slim 2TB since it was slimmer. It also worked out for the bracket I used to hold them in. Kingwin 2 bay PCI-E HDD Frame
I also picked up some cables: Right Angle USB for the RPi, Right angle usb 3.0 cables for the HDDs, and a double right angle USB cable.
I used Sugru for mounting the RPi, HDD frame, and holding the hub in place.
It wasn't shown in the pictures, but I also picked up a FLIRC so I can use any remote. I do know that the RPi can send commands over CEC as well with new TVs.

I'm using this one. But it doesn't work out of the box. You have to remove the drive from the housing to get it to work. Here is a handy guide that walks you through the entire process.

If you're looking for slightly more powerful graphics (especially if you have a 4K tv) the Ps4 pro is the way to go. The Ps4 slim model is smaller but in my opinion not worth getting. Of course you have the original ps4 which is definitely a solid choice. On the issue of memory you can easily change out the standard 500 gb storage device on the original ps4 for a 2 tb one all you need is a screwdriver and a usb.

Edit: I feel that 500 gigabytes will fill quickly and 1 terabyte is a good medium between price and storage space. However, if you buy most of your games digitally I would recommend 1-2 terabytes as all the digital games will start to eat up storage and also bring the hassle of having to reinstall through the Internet rather than on disc.

I highly doubt it because the PS4 formats the disk when you hook it up. Remember that heavy DRM is involved. They don’t want you loading games on a drive and then hooking it up to a computer for hacking games, cracking, etc.

All you need to do is open the enclosure and take the drive out. It’s cheaper than buying a loose drive. I actually bought this from Best Buy, put my stock 500 GB PS4 drive in there and returned it. I know it’s a scumbag move but they don’t check and they’ve screwed me over in the past.
Sony makes it really easy to change the internal drive. You only need to slide the shiny cover off to the left, unscrew about 4 screws, take the old drive out, new one in, screw, close.

I'd recommend the latest version of Office. It's dramatically improved over older versions. You don't want to play with Apple's version of Word, called Pages. You need to have all of your stuff backed up before doing the upgrade, even if it's just on a thumb drive (though I'd really prefer you get something like this.) In fact, you need to have everything backed up, period. You're working with an old machine and some day it will die.
What I mean by kill programs is that the Word program itself won't open. All of your documents, pictures, etc will work perfectly fine. It's just that the old app you're using to open your Word files won't work, but if you get the current version of the program, it will open all your files. If you use any other programs that you got from someone other than Apple, they may need to be upgraded.

RAM sounds fine. If you can afford it, replacing your hard drive with a solid state drive (no moving parts) will dramatically increase the speed at which everything opens when you need it. Just a matter of personal preference, though. You've got plenty of space so upgrading isn't a requirement.

This toshiba 1tb is cheap, fast (usb 3.0 transfer) and convenient. You don't need to mess with enclosures and it's a lot of space.
Edit: rpm's don't matter much when watching movies. The important thing is a good transfer speed. With USB 3.0 it transfers for me 80mb - 100mb per second when i'm transferring huge games, movies or large photo files. :)

I love that there's no external power cord. I just use the USB port in the back of my Xbox and the HDD just sits back there completely hidden.
I'd recommend Western Digital over Seagate. From what I've heard, Seagate has a much higher failure rate.

I have a Mac, work in disconnected environments, generate a few gigs of new data every week, and have been obsessed with backups for as long as I can remember.
My goal is automated incremental backups of my entire machine with proven software. I've settled on Crashplan, SuperDuper, and two WD portable drives.
Crashplan backs up my home folder to the cloud when there is a connection and it also backs up to Drive 1 every fifteen minutes or so. I then use SuperDuper for nightly images of my entire machine to Drive 2.
Crashplan keeps every single change and it's great to recover from software bugs and accidental deletes. SuperDuper's nightly images are great for fast rollback and to mount my drive on pretty much any Mac.
I've been a nomad for about two years and this system has worked well for me. It keeps your data lived in three places locally (laptop, two drives) and uses the cloud as the fourth location.
If you have a good connection, you can keep the laptop and drives in the same place. If you don't have a good connection, keep the laptop and drives separated.
The big gap in this system is in restoring the OS and apps. Your OS can only be restored with a recovery partition on your Mac and your apps from SuperDuper drive. If either of those are gone, you are going to be in for a rough time.

I think it'll work for PC too. The Xbox One will take any USB-external drive. If you're using it for media storage (e.g. movies, music), then it's plug and play. If you want to use it to store Xbox games and apps, then you will have to choose the popup option to format it for Xbox and that this will erase any existing data on it. You can format it for Xbox and then take it back to PC and, if you had chosen to format it for Xbox then you'd need to reformat it there on PC (which will, again, erase all the data).
EDIT Of course, you should definitely confirm that before buying, but for what it's worth, other Seagate "game drives" like this list PC as a supported hardware platform.

No. I don't like Seagates because I personally think they're unreliable, but everyone is entitled to their own opinion.

That is just one example, but I have had a seagate drive for 2 years and it died on me randomly too.

Holy shit, this just made me run a quick test, and I can actually edit these large .R3D files in Premiere Pro in real time from my 16TB WD RAID 0 external drive!!

AFAIK there was no sign of a pricing mistake. They quickly sold out and went on back order and then stopped accepting orders but unlike the infamous $80 ($79.99) etc incident the orders shipped without issue. Also Amazon wasn't the only one to offer that price as B&H also did.

This is a plug-and-play HDD that I believe Sony recently said to be official. You literally just plug it in and download shit to it. You can unplug it and play on other consoles so long as it's on the same account, and it's on sale currently. Hope this helps.
It's roughly the price of one game. I'm not trying to be rude but I really don't understand "it's expensive." Your ps4 was probably around $300 or more, $60 per game, at least $150 TV. Spending $50-$65 on extra storage is worth it and you'll be wondering why you didn't do it sooner.

I actually bought from jet.com one of those (wanted 2) to get some cheap WD Reds so i can have my own data as well during black friday.
I was worried they have firmware changes like Seagate does to ruin performance when used internally. Shucked 5TB Seagates are extremely inconsistent when used internally.
I've also gotten them from 16TB WD MyClouds.
Not quite as cheap as those EasyStores, but the MyClouds always have WD Reds, they're designed to be opened, and they're still a lot cheaper than buying the drives by themselves.
Shuck a WD 16TB My Book Duo and you end up with (2) 8TB WD Reds for $31.25/TB and a 2 year warranty on the drives.
Heads-up...you can get WD Red 8TBs for $250/per without the need for any coupons by buying this and shucking the drives inside, which are apparently reds. Kind of ludicrous, I know.
In your position I might consider a WD Duo 12-16TB, if it's in budget (B&H has it $50 cheaper than Amazon for the 16TB). It's a USB 3.0 dual-disk enclosure containing two WD Reds. Then I would configure it in RAID-1 giving 6-8TB of usable space with redundancy. The disks can be easily removed from the enclosure and used as internal disks later if you decide to go that direction. One caveat, though: The enclosure encrypts the data on the disks and it cannot be disabled, so if the enclosure dies you have to jump through some hoops to regain access to your data.
I'm running a Silverstone DS380 mini-ITX which has 8 3.5" bays if that helps at all. I stream using Serviio (similar to Plex) with very few issues, but my TV has good codec support so I do very little transcoding. The little C2750 Avoton struggles if it needs to transcode.

Btw when it comes to unraid.. Use the "preclear plugin" this will do all the formatting and everything BEFORE you introduce them into the array. If I remember right this helps you bypass the parity rebuilds. But also its a burn in test.. Most drives(my own experience) die within the first week of heavy usage.. SO burn the shit out of those drives and if you can let them get on the warmer side.. Like 110-115f to see if they die.. If they can take that torture of being wrote to completely and living. Am going to try out the "Used - Like New" option for $449. The $26 in tax sucks for me but it's still cheaper and I had a pile of Amazon credit from having one of their credit cards. You know if it would be a better choice than the Backup Plus for a use as an external HDD for PC backup? That is currently down to £135 but went as low as £120 during the primeday sales.
This is the one I have, though I bought it second hand from CeX for £135.

Connect it when you want to play a game that's on it, disconnect it formally when you're not going to use it anymore (hold ps button, stop using external, then unplug). I've played Dark Souls 3, Nioh, and several other games on it with no performance issues. Initial loading/booting up the games seem slightly longer but nothing huge. And regarding in game loading times if they are longer it is not noticeable. Multiplayer has also been fine (SFV, DS3, BB, Nioh).

Well that's the thing. I'd pretty much have to right away. My drives are currently pretty much maxed out which is why I need to get another so I can have some free space to work with. I mentioned copying a few to the new drive so I could "break it in" for the first couple of months while still having the data backed up in case it does fail so I wont lose any date but I will need the extra space fairly quickly.

Thanks for your help by the way. I'm just getting started and I'm already pretty confused and a bit intimidated by it all. I just re-read your post, this may be too large in size, both in memory and physical size. It's called the MyBook because, it's like the size of a small book. Lol. Not too practical for traveling as there are smaller hard drives. But I do personally like WD products.
Anyways, as someone else mentioned you format it one way or another, for games or for music/movies. You can't do both. I have a WD Passport that I have movies on. Those are affordable as well.
You can sometimes find 10gb external drives for sale around $180- If you find the right brand, these drives can be removed from the external enclosure and put into your computer. (easy tutorials online)

It is hard to guide you without knowing how much data you have to move.
If it's only a few GB, a USB flash drive option is likely the best way to go.
Otherwise, buy one or more external drives that you can connect via USB. This will allow you to copy directories directly. Check this for a low cost option.
Direct copies should maintain "last modified" and "written" data of each file. Test it to make yourself confident before committing to a single solution.

You may need a different external hard drive, or a large flash drive. You will need to dig through the folder structure that you changed/created, grab the files that are important, and manually cut/copy them to new folders on a new external drive.
Once you have all the files moved, you can do a system restore (https://www.windowscentral.com/how-use-system-restore-windows-10) to return your folder structure to the way it was before you had this problem.
If system restore does not work, you can always do a Windows 10 Refresh (https://pureinfotech.com/refresh-windows-10-clean-installation/), choosing the more destructive option that does not keep your personal files.
You have to manually move your individual files that you need to save to the new external drive first, otherwise you stand a chance of losing files if you perform either of these actions.

I got one of these Toshiba Canvio 1TB drives partitioned into 350gb of OS X storage and 650gb of Windows storage (HFS and NTFS, I think? It's been a while since I set it up) and it works perfectly, I keep almost every game I own installed on there from Win/OS X Steam, Origin, GoG and stuff like Minecraft. The only games I keep installed on my laptop any more are trackpad-friendly games like Binding of Isaac and Civ V.
I've never encountered any loading or speed issues even though the drive is only 5400rpm. It's USB3 so it's (kind of?) futureproof, and the biggest bonus for me is that it doesn't need to be plugged into an external power source. I don't know if all my externals before this one were just from a different era but I'd never seen that before so it was a huge plus for me. It's also tiny, about the size of two stacked iPhone 4's.
The only downside about the drive itself is that it comes with a tiny cable (about 8") that is USB3 (looks like this) so the chances of being able to use it with any random cable that's lying around are pretty low at the moment but I suppose that will change in the future as USB3 cables become more common.
Steam is a little buggy supporting libraries installed over two drives, sometimes I'll log in and have no games installed, all I have to do is remove and re-add my library folder in the preferences and all my games come back no problem though, it's just a minor annoyance (that caused a small heart attack the first time). I probably have to do that about once a week, but this might also be caused by me regularly connecting and reconnecting multiple external drives and confusing the computer.

WD has two flavors of external drive, their "Desktop" series which is large drives that weight over 1kg and their "portable" variety which is laptop drives in cases which are a few hundred grams.
The Elements series is their basebones "drive-encased-in-plastic" model, it has very little else, no software preloaded on it.
The Passport series is slightly more fleshed out, it has backup software built in and security features to protect it from theft or something like that.
Oddly, I'm seeing the passport series of the portable drives selling for less on amazon than the elements are, I'd recommend one of the mypassport series
Don't worry about an SSD, the speed boost is tiny compared to how much you'd be paying to get storage comparable to a HDD.
I've used a WD Passport for almost two years now (and I use them for computer backups as well) and I've had zero issues whatsoever.
WD My Passport 2TB drive for $92, or the 1TB version for $72 (though I personally feel that doubling the storage for only $20 is better, both cost-wise and in terms of long-term value).
Or you could pay almost $400 for a Samsung SSD with half the storage.

I like to "own" things as well because the internet is susceptible to outages. Digital downloads ensure that you can still have the movie on a hard drive.
My friends and I all own external HDs with hundreds of movies on them. If you buy a 1TB HD for $98.95 you could fit over 250 HD movies at 4GB per pop. If you were willing to settle for the 700MB versions of films, that's almost 1500 movies on an HD.
That's a lot more portable and space-efficient than a bookshelf full of discs.
Of course, HDs can get corrupted, break, or whatever...but discs are so fragile it's unbelievable. Especially since those cases that they come in nearly crack the inner area of the disc every time you take them out.

If you don't have an external hard drive to put your stuff on, buy one of these. They're super convenient - small, powered by USB, large space, relatively cheap, and have good reviews.
This could be a good backer upper for Windows. Time machine is probably best for OSX, and Linux users probably know what to do.

Still though, no PC should be unusable. Considering its not a desktop and you can't stick another internal inside to straight up clone and boot from, your best bet is to just copy what you want to save then reinstall.

I disagree with the other solution. I recommend a WD passport or something similar. You should only pay ~$70 for 1TB. I got one and love it - it's even USB 3 and about as fast as an internal HDD (I think like 5400RPM or something, but it's still very fast)

I've been using this Western Digital for a couple of months now and it's been great so far. Super fast, very small, quiet. If I had any complaint it would be that the cable it came with was fairly short, maybe a foot and a half long. Since you're using it on a laptop though that probably won't be an issue.

Okay then, at this point I would reset your computer. First of all in doing this, make sure you back up all of your personal files, such as documents, pictures, and videos on a USB drive or a external hard drive. If you don't have a external hard drive, I found a cheap one on Amazon France, click this to go to the product. Make sure to have everything important backed up. Then, reset your computer. If you don't know how to do this, Google "how to reset (OS)". The word OS should be replaced with your operating system, such as Windows 7 or Mac OS X.
I promise that basic computer maintenance sounds a lot more scary than it actually is, lol. I built my husband's last full-sized pc, and have replaced several components on my last two laptops, basically all via some guesswork and youtube/google tutorials.
Strange that your laptop has soooo little space. Is it an ultra slim thing, or a chromebook or something? What kind is it? I might be able to look up if you have a spare hard drive bay.
As far as reinstalling Windows goes, if it came preinstalled on your laptop, there should be a sticker somewhere on it that has the Windows product key. If so, you wouldn't need to pay for a new copy. If not, that's a little problematic.
An easier option that's a little more durable/cost effective than just a USB stick is an external hard drive. These are still USB, but have more space for cheaper, and if the cord gets damaged you don't have to replace the whole shebang. There's this one for super cheap though I have no experience with the brand, or this one, which I own.
Remember you can back up the "storage" drive onto the "time machine drive" as well so 500GB at the very least. I'd recommend 1TB though. Drives are pretty cheap.

Backblaze is pretty good for backups, but I always prefer local backups (like an external USB drive). You can get a Western Digital Elements USB3.0 2TB drive for about $80, which is a steal for that much space, plus it's small and portable.
Either way, backing up gigabytes of data is going to cost you some money, either in online service fees, or hardware purchases. I can't think of any free services off the top of my head, unless your data is relatively small and you can go with the free DropBox or Google Drive space they provide.

Not much tinkering. You have some set up as the system needs to reformat the system, but overall there isn't much involved and it's pretty easy. But after that it's easy enough as popping a game in to install (or a download). Only requirement is that it needs to be USB 3.0. There may be something about desktop hard drives, but I'm not sure about that. I assume they will work just the same. Don't go for the gaming ones as they're just a waste of money. Go for something decent.

I have had big projects before, but I always managed to get away with around 300GB of needed space overall and was able to use the internal SSD of my macbook. Sometimes I had to resort to average as stacking method because DSS does not need tons of swap space for this. The external drive I used is really not fast although it uses usb 3 as an interface.

I still don't really buy this, certainly a position of 0 compromise on block size is ludicrous given the past and future improvements in storage capacity. Obviously, larger block size puts more pressure on storage at nodes. A 2 Terrabye Harddrive is $70 at the first link on Google, and probably cheaper if you looked around. Almost everyone who already runs a node has already gone to enough hassle and expense that I highly, highly doubt that would seriously change the equation and cause them to stop running their node.

79 cheap enough for ya? :P It's cheaper to buy this hdd as an external and then to open it up and extract the bare drive out of it. Of course if that sounds annoying (and it was hardly) then you can search the model and see if the price difference sways you any. I ordered it on black friday when it was on sale, so less than $100 Canadian with taxes. It is the same drive that a lot of people seem to be buying as the cost is reasonable and all you need to do is remove the outer casing and pop it in the PS4.
That does change it a bit.
The older Razer Blade Stealth is also available as a refurb unit for 1400 CAD for the QHD 256GB and 1900 CAD for the UHD 512GB but I don't think they're worth it since they only have 8GB of RAM.
16GB of RAM vs 8GB is a pretty big one IMO. I've just opened a very small project with BFD3 to check it out and it brought be up to 10.5GB usage, if you plan on using anything similar or Kontakt libraries now or in the future you should really care for this.
The CPU on the Blade is a bit faster and more power efficient. But this is negligible.
The storage is up to you. I think you'll end up with an external HDD anyway with both and they're really cheap. There's no reason to pay for an SSD if you plan on using it for storage, especially not those expensive NVMe SSDs you're paying for in these laptops.
There's also this Asus ZenBook coming in at 1500 CAD which has a higher resolution display than the Macbook, has an i7 6500U, 12GB of RAM and a 512GB SSD.
The Razer is pretty much the Macbook of the PC world.
If you want to upgrade the internal drive to a 2TB one you can use this one, it fits in the pro and the original PS4 (not sure about the slim) and you don't need to modify the chassis. You just need to shuck the drive from the enclosure, it's pretty easy and there are videos online you can follow.

Don't have a new drive yet, just putting it all on an internal hard drive for a moment. I'm reading online forums of Maxtor drives failing at 180 reallocated sectors, 249 cant be good if I still need to use it to transfer files.

The laptop has a decent battery life, expect at least 7 hours for light general use. For photo editing, it should be a great fit, it has decent color coverage. What /u/DrWoolyNips said. However, beyond the list, generally any USB 2.0 hard drive will work, as long as it's formatted properly. Although if you're going to buy a drive, you'd probably be better off getting something like this or something else in that form factor. That exact model is what my Wii runs off, and this style has the added advantage of being smaller and being pretty much tanks (I've dropped and knocked over my setup more times than I care to admit). Of course, if you have that drive lying around, just give it a shot and see if it works.
I noted the size differences in another post in this very topic. That 3.5 GB patch (Infamous I suppose?) is a delta patch, meaning it doesn't make your total space used [size of game] + 3.5 GB. That 3.5 GB patch replaced files in the game install, it did not add itself on top of them. Games get updated all the time and that's not something new for PS4 Pro and the Pro updates are not wasting space that otherwise would not be taken up.
You can get a 1TB hard drive for $60 or a 2TB hard drive for $80 if you're finding you have to delete games you want to keep playing.

Basically, you get a cheap other HDD like this (you probably want a bigger one for double backups or just in case you get a bigger harddrive)
Then, you backup all your files to it once very week or so. Make sure not to keep it plugged into the computer except when doing backups. (otherwise when a virus hits it will have access to your backup drive and will encrypt everything on it as well).
I have no idea what that person is talking about (maybe compression? idk) but there's no magical way to reduce the amount of data you're using.

This is the one that I got.
It is easy as hell to use and runs off of the USB connection to the XB1, doesn't need any external power source.
I got it and plugged it into my XB1. It asked me if I wanted to format it, I selected yes, and a couple seconds later it was ready to go. You can also set it to your main drive after formatting so everything you download will go to it instead of your XB1 HDD.

I have used this drive for a while now without issues, it is only a 5400RPM drive but the performance gains from a 7200RPM drive is minimal. The main reason why I got this drive is that the matte plastic matches the plastic around the xbox disk drive and also the vents if you like making things match. A word of warning though you will need to reformat the drive through a PC (Windows / Mac / Linux) before it will work on the Xbox One, if you go with it just let me know what type of computer you have and I can give you some help in doing so it will only take 5mins and not cost a dime.
If you want cheep, Toshiba is the brand that I would say has a good blend of quality for the price.
Don't worry much about brands and such though, everyone will get a lemon now and then regardless of drive, but thats why we have warranties; also most of the drives are sourced from the same factories as the other guy.

For me, I'd greatly appreciate a Toshiba Canvio Basics 1TB Portable Hard Drive :D It has a very practical use for me. Recently, I've gotten back to studying and experimenting with game development. Since my focus is on 3D world, that means I also have to create a lot of 3D objects and even 2D textures and maps for my characters and items. The assets I create usually consume gigabytes worth of space on my current drive because there's so many of them! I've also used up my other 1TB external drive because I've been saving all my educational material and experiments there. Recently, I had to delete older training material from my old 1TB external drive just so I could save the new ones I'm learning. With a new extra 1TB drive, I wouldn't have to worry about deleting previous and current work and learning materials from my computer and external drive and I'll be able to focus more on quality instead of trying to compress everything into lower quality versions.

Looking at an external hard drive for my PS4 slim. The Seagate Expansion 3TB for $69.99 caught my eye. Is that a good enough size? I don't mind deleting the occasional game, but I'd like to have more of my collection readily available.
Have you tried playing any other games from the external? Might help to isolate whether this is a HD problem or something with Hitman specifically.
I know this is anecdotal, but I have a different model Seagate drive, and almost all of my games install and run faster from my external compared to the internal, including Hitman. In fact, from what I've heard it's common for games to run better when installed to any external, so it might just be a bad drive.
Also, you're making sure that all the episodes are moved over along with the base game, right? When I was moving things over, I noticed it initially tried to only move the base game, and I had to go to "manage game" and move the episodes over individually. If it's trying to load from both internal and external, that might be slowing you down.

I noticed it doesn't mention windows 10 compatibility, and that many other drives specifically list whether its also formatable with mac. Note this one can be compatible with mac but only after a complete reformat which is avoidable, I hope.

A producer offering experience with live shows would be most convenient. Don't wanna buy a drive that isn't cross compatible if I end up buying a mac for live shows because using windows live risks more crashing in comparison.
Honestly, I think it's better to get into the habit of backing things up onto physical drives. Hard drives are extremely cheap nowadays ( this 3TB Seagate is only $79). It's a good practice, and you're not going to always have reliable internet when you're on set to use the cloud. I personally have two 4TB hard drives as safety nets in addition to my primary 4TB hard drive where footage is uploaded. It shouldn't be that much of a hassle if you just name your file folders accurately and keep everything neatly compartmentalized.

I have my pi fileserver with a large usb hub, and filled the hub with all my old hard drives. I think I currently have 6 external desktop style hds on it now. I just bought an 8tb hd to back the old drives up to.
The pi is so slow at this I move the 8tb, and one older drive at a time to my desktop pc to do the copying over usb 3.
Otherwise it will take most of the day to copy a full 2tb to the new hd.
I use this pi as a minidlna file server and samba server. With pihole as a housewide ad blocker.

Any standard external USB drive will do what you need. Some do come with extra software that helps automate backups, but you aren't required to use it and it can almost always be easily removed.
Something like this would work if you'd like something compact and to avoid extra power cables.

It's the one drive I have found (that's not Seagate) that is bus powered. Seems to have nice reviews too. 3TB should be enough as well.

It must be this enclosure too (2nd one to do this). I just used a Western Digital external drive that I borrowed and it worked fine morning. Will try using it a couple more times after the xbox being off for a while

When you first connect it the Xbox will immediately ask if you want to use this for storage or media. Pick storage and it will format it to what ever partition scheme the xbox uses and you will be all set. Just note that if you want to use this drive in another Device or PC you will have to format it again to what ever that new system supports.
What's the difference between OP link and this WD drive. When I scroll down to the "compare similar items" section, it shows an extremely similar drive to OP link. Looks like the one I linked is a 2015 model while the other is 2013.

Best buy and Amazon currently have 2TB Western Digital My Passport Ultras for $89. I don't have the hopper (I have the ViP722k), but it was still fairly easy to transfer programming from my old receiver to a replacement receiver. I had about 170GB of programming to transfer, and it took ~8 hours each way. btw, these EHD's are USB powered.

However, I'd like to point out that you don't have to wait for a torrent to finish downloading before you can watch it. Some torrent clients have the ability to download the torrent in sequential order, making it possible to watch while it's downloading. For example, qBittorrent allows you to download a file from beginning to end. That being said, I usually wait until the torrent is around 10% downloaded, and then start watching. I could watch immediately, but then I might hit some "buffering." Waiting til 10% is only a few minutes, and then there's no buffering the entire episode.
Also, the using up hard drive space argument isn't exactly the most valid argument in this day 'n age.
That being said, I understand people wanting to conserve space, so streaming is a better option for many people. (:

External is the way to go. I have this 2tb from Western Digital and it has worked well so far. 2tb seems to be plenty of space.

Doesn't matter, you have the choice on PC. That's the difference.
Trust me on this that drives are everywhere and cheap. You can get a 1TB internal 7200RPM sata 6 drive for around $60 which will outperform that drive in every way.
Avoid it if you can, but know that it'll be slow, could fail because Seagate is not great, and there's no reason you are forced to taking this offer.

Deluxe gives a few small items but nothing that is a huge deal. The deluxe I feel is not really necessary, but to each their own. The season pass gives 3 story expansions (or additional story content at least). I recommend the base game plus season pass (or get the season pass later).

Hard drives are not too bad this day and age. Really anything about 256 GB and USB 3.0 works. You can get drives for 50 bucks or so.

Look out for any portable external hard drives as they can be opened up for 2.5 in hard drives. Also if a 9.5mm fits so will a 9mm and 7mm hard drive.

Amazon. This was on sale for $85 a few weeks ago, it was posted all over this sub.
For $50, you're not going to get more than 500 GB of space. That might be more than enough right now, but you should know that hard drive space gets cheaper and cheaper the more you buy in one go. The first 500 GB will cost you $50, and that's with a cheap brand (Toshiba). The next 500 will cost you just another $20, and that's from a much more reputable brand. Then you can double your space to 2 TB for just another measly $10. After that, the price goes up pretty linearly, at a rate of about $10/TB.
My point is, if you're going to invest in a hard drive, it's better to spend a little more to get a lot more space. You get far more bang for your buck that way, and with the way download sizes on games and media are growing these days, 500 GB won't last you nearly as long as it used to.
A couple of points.
If you want cheap, grab 7 of these, label them and swap them daily.

Seagate Game Drive is overpriced because it's Xbox branded and they trick people into thinking it's the only one they can use. You can literally get a standard Seagate drive in the same size for $20 less. I personally bought this WD drive.
I'm Canadian. Trick is you buy the drives when there are good deals. I don't see any right now, but $400 is a bit high for 10 TB even in Canada. This 10 TB drive is CAD$300 or $315 after taxes on the Canadian Amazon store. This 8 TB drive is only CAD$184 on Amazon Canada, meaning you could get 16 GB for $368+tax.
Is the NAS really worth it for the premium price in storage? Guess it matters how much you care about redundancy. I personally don't because I can just re-download stuff fairly quickly if anything happened (~1.5 days for 16 TB and 1 Gbps connection) and nothing in my hard drive is that sensitive. Of course you might have other circumstances that make the premium price worth it.

Did you not read where I specifically said the Segate Backup Plus drive? It has a hub built right into it, in which I would plug the PSVR. And I was also referring to the PS4 merely detecting devices plugged into hubs at all.
Seagate is definitely not a fairly trusted brand. Stick with Western digital, Toshiba, or Hitachi. Seagate have a substantially higher break-in death rate than other devices. (it might die within a few months of usage). There is proof to back this up, I'm on a mobile platform so I don't have access to it.
