pretty cool.

And also the reason why I only buy this type of flash drive. No moving parts.

They aren't cheap, but 2 is multiple I guess

I actually wonder if there is a real market for this. Who'd pay that kind of money for this thing, when you could use an any external drive for a fraction of the price

u/Jahmay · 40 pointsr/videography

I used to have the client's provide the hard drive, but I started to feel that wasn't very professional so I started providing it now and just upped my total price. If it's only 128gb then I buy this for $20 and the 256gb are about $40. Since the usb is really small I attach this wooden piece to it with a nice knot. Then you could deliver it in a box like this. The boxes I use say "Our Wedding" on them and have little white paper shreds holding the usb up. I then put some business cards beneath the box and tie a ribbon around the whole thing.

Better yet, the Android version is $15 for a 64GB USB 3.0 OTG.

Price for a 64GB USB 2.0 iXpand for iOS? $70.

u/GoTeamScotch · 27 pointsr/originalxbox

Memory cards are basically regular USB flash drives in a special case with a special connector. If you pop one open and remove the 8MB flash drive, you can put in a replacement drive that is (much) larger. Drives up to 4GB are supported.

I used a SanDisk Cruzer Blade 4GB USB Flash Drive.

Once the drive is in, you can use the stock Xbox dashboard to format it. This works on stock (unmodded) Xboxes too.

You can get up to 2 TB on a (rather chunky) USB stick: Kingston Data Traveler Ultimate GT 2TB but it costs a pretty penny. And by "pretty penny" I mean it's stupidly expensive.

More seriously, for installing games to, I highly recommend the Sandisk Extreme USB sticks (3.0, Go or Pro versions are all good). They have the extremely good random access performance compared to a lot of USB sticks I've seen tested, easily orders of magnitude higher than most! This is an older benchmark, but just look at it (specifically the write performance, the black bars).

What's more, they have an exceptional warranty - All the Sandisk "Extreme" USB sticks have a 30 year warranty. 30 years!

A modern thumb drive still uses a USB A connector. The new Macbook doesn't have a female USB A port, it only has one female USB C thus you need an adapter. That same USB C port is used to charge the Macbook.

There are some USB drives that have a Type C connector but they're rare because they're new, and you still can't charge your laptop and have the drive plugged in because only one digital port.

Get a faster USB flash drive. I have a 64gb Sandisk USB 3.0 that I filled about 45gb in under an hour. Of course you will need to have a computer that has USB 3.0. It's not rekordbox, it's your computer/USB drive.

Yes, softmodding is a braindead easy process. You can use a SATA HDD, or an SSD, but SSDs are not recommended. If you're referring to removing the bezel on the Xbox DVD drive's tray, yes, you can remove it.

As for the whole softmodding process, I'll just copy and paste my post from a different thread below:

  • You'll need the softmod files. JCRocky5's Xbox Softmodding Tool is the newest one and is by far the best. He still regularly updates it too and is active on this sub.

  • You'll need a flash drive that is compatible with the Xbox. Nothing over 4GB will work and even most of the ones under that likely won't either. You can try any flash drive you already have that is 4GB or lower, but if you don't have one, or none of yours work with the Xbox, you can grab this one that is guaranteed to work.

  • You'll need a USB to Xbox adapter in order to connect the flash drive to the Xbox and copy the files over.

  • You will need an exploitable game. Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell (the first one) and Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 4 are the easiest to shop for because any copy will work. You can also use MechAssault (the first one) or 007: Agent Under Fire, but they have to be the original black label, non-Platinum Hits versions. Splinter Cell and MechAssault are the easiest ones to use, as all you have to do is boot the game and press A a few times.

Once you have everything you need, you'll need to format the flash drive to work with the Xbox, copy the files to the flash drive, then from there to the Xbox. Then just boot the game and launch the softmod installer. Here is a video by JCRocky5 himself, demonstrating how to do everything. The video is based on an older version of his softmod tool, but the steps are the same.

Once the softmod has been installed, you will also now have an app on the Xbox called NKpatcher Settings. Run this app and use its feature to null your EEPROM's HDD key (EEPROM > Advanced Features > HDD Key > Null the HDD Key). This is an important failsafe protocol to make saving the Xbox easier, should anything ever happen to the HDD in the future.

After all of this is done, you'll need to upgrade the HDD with a much bigger one, so that you can install your games onto it. This can be done with Chimp261812. And here is a video demonstrating how that works. Play all of your games from the HDD from now on instead of using the DVD drive. The DVD drives are very old and are failing, so try to preserve it.

Make sure you identify which revision your Xbox is too. If it's not a v1.6/v1.6b, you will need to open it and remove the clock capacitor. This is MANDATORY! If you do not remove this capacitor from a 1.0-1.5 Xbox, it will leak and destroy the motherboard. 100% guaranteed.

I recently got set up and will do my best to pay forward the help I received

otg cable - this provides power and a usb flash drive connection

flash drive - likely a better one but this is the one i got

bleemsync installation steps See section "How in install from fresh (Including OTG setup)"

autobleem download - I used autobleem-0.6.0-B3-RetroBoot.zip

you'll wanna start with getting OTG support using bleemsync, then save your backup folder in a secure location off your flash drive, re-format your flash drive, then copy over the autobleem files

then add games to games folder and roms to roms folder :)

I did a bit of research on this. The two main competitors for the low profile USB 3.0 usb sticks are the Lexar S45:

https://www.amazon.com/Lexar-JumpDrive-128GB-Flash-Drive/dp/B012PKV7RC

And the SanDisk Ultra Fit:

https://www.amazon.com/SanDisk-Ultra-SDCZ43-128G-GAM46-Newest-Version/dp/B01BGTG2A0/

They are similar in price (around 30 dollars). I went with the Lexar because it seemed to be slightly faster in head to head benchmarks and the profile of it is flat. The primary downside when I got it is that it has a VERY bright blue LED that flashes with activity. However, I simply put some electrical tape over it and it almost entirely blocks it.

For SDCards, it seems the fastest performers are the Samsung EVO Plus:

https://www.amazon.com/Samsung-mc128d-128gb-Uhs-i-Adapter/dp/B0118LR9Z8/

It has the fastest read speed at 80 MB/sec, which is still quite a bit slower than the USB which I usually benchmark at around 150 MB/Sec max, and the internal memory is faster than both, and much better read speed (so prioritize putting games etc that have longer loading times or require writing in the internal memory).

How big are these chips? I find it hard to believe size is a limiting factor when we can get USB port sized flashdrives holding up to 128GB for $40. Going way smaller in size and storage shouldn't be hard, at 1/100 of the size pushing even just a megabyte would give you room to fit insane amounts of data on the pet.

Looking it up, they're a tiny big bigger than a grain of rice. That USB flashdrive is about 5-10 rice grains big, if you exclude the USB port. I just find it hard to believe that on the current size scale you can only fit a 12 digit number.

Also, 12 digits != 12 bytes.

999999999999 = 12 digits

10111010 01000011 10110111 00111111 1111 1 = 4 bytes, 1 nibble, 1 bit.

Same number. This is assuming we're not using hexadecimal though.

Math time!

Lets say each of his boxes holds 50 vinyl records, and he's stated that he has 10 boxes. So about 500 LPs give or take.

A 24bit 48KHz 41 minute and 35 second WAV file is exactly 718.6MB (props to anyone who recognizes why I might know this). The average length of an album is about 43 minutes and 17 seconds. So lets just be generous and round up to 750MB per album... that would maybe add space for album art and other metadata.

400 x 750MB = 366.21GB which leaves plenty of room to spare on this flash drive here... And lets be honest here, most people don't keep their lossless music collection in WAV. Realistically, if I was a little less generous in my math, I'm willing to bet the guy could store his entire vinyl collection lossless on a 256GB flash drive, which have been out for a while now.

Well, its only the casing for the drive that makes it worth it. If you were dedicated and careful, you could cut it in half, replace the drive, and glue it back together.

Finding a drive replacement that fits shouldn't be too hard, as you can get cheap USB 3.0 drives that are really small just epoxy the shit out of it, so it doesn't move inside the excalibur case.

u/deraphus86 · 3 pointsr/PlaystationClassic

So was I when it started and it’s a lot easier now.

The hardest part is going to be finding a usb drive that’s compatible. You need a relatively low capacity drive to go in the 2nd player slot, the reason it needs to be a certain type is the power supply is very limited to the front so most won’t work. I believe there is a list online of ones that’ll work. Of you want to test one you already own then follow the guide till you get to test it and see, if nothing else it’s a good practice run for you.

If you want use of the 2nd player you’ll then need to install the custom kernel (all in the guide) and big an OTG adaptor. This also means you can buy a much bigger drive and upload more content.

This is the guide I used:

https://youtu.be/ydLKv1HUd0A

This is the OTG cable I bought

Zerone Right Left Angle Micro USB... https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B07FMYFJVT?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share

This is the wireless adapter I use for my PS4 controller (also works with Xbone)

8Bitdo Wireless Bluetooth Adapter... https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B0786JC6VW?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share

And this is the drive I’m now using after setting up OTG

SanDisk SDCZ60-128G-B35 Cruzer... https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B007YX9OGW?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share

These will give you an idea of expense, completely depending on how deep you want to go down the rabbit hole. You can just get yourself a working drive for the 2nd slot and play 1 player games no problem.

Completely up to you!

I had a USB flash device in mind, specifically something like this: https://www.amazon.com/Kingston-Digital-DataTraveler-DTSE9H-64GBET/dp/B00DYQYIZU

I wasn't really addressing archival needs here though, this was just in the context of the idea that not having an optical means CD-ROM games are unplayable.

u/Dontdoit007 · 3 pointsr/GearVR

So a device like this seems to be a good solution http://www.amazon.com/SanDisk-Android-Smartphone-Tablet-SDDD-032G-G46/dp/B00HR78S2Q. But it seems you're not asking about hardware, but rather, is there anything more to move to the external storage than just the .apk/demo/video

u/PM_SECRET_NUDES · 3 pointsr/Android

Got one of these. So useful for transferring files between my phones, tablet and computers

u/atetuna · 3 pointsr/Venue8Pro

I got mine new for $100 from the Microsoft Store, and it's great for the price I paid. It certainly has its issues though, mainly that it's too difficult to write quickly and it frequently refuses to wake up without a hard reset. I use mine with a 64GB card and the transfer speeds from a 64GB usb 3.0 flash drive is several times faster than writing to it from my pc with usb 1. I'm not sure how fast it's supposed to be, so I can't say if it's performing as it should. I keep mine in an IVSO case all the time, so I feel little heat, but usually feel no heat. Mine is mostly used for reading with DrawboardPDF, which is awkward and unreliable, but occasionally I'll use it to watch 720p videos stored on the memory card or on a Plex server. I disable rotation most of the time, and manually rotate when switching from reading to watching videos.

While I'm happy with the $100 I paid, I regret paying an extra ~hundred for Microsoft CompleteCare or whatever it's called, and buying that first stylus that worked very poorly.

I still have the OS as originally installed, and haven't updated any of the firmware, so the issues I've experienced might have already been addressed by the updates or Windows 8.1.

u/a_park_bench · 3 pointsr/Android

OTG cable. And iOS users can do something similar, it just requires hardware purpose built.

>organize before you learn how to organize" is bad advice

Yeah, I didn't actually mean it in that way and I see why I got downvoted to hell. My main point was that we need more work done on the ground and less circle jerking in the cloud. If you really want to advance the cause online, you can tell people about local organizations they can join. Joining is a lot easier than starting something from scratch and the actual experience that you get from participating informs you in later organizing efforts. Organizing is something that you have to do in many different contexts in order to learn it. There's only so much you can learn from Youtube videos.

>It sounds like you're just trying to advocate an anti-internet mindset which is a pretty weird thing to do via internet communication. "Sharing information and talking to people from across the world cannot POSSIBLY help you organize in real life!"

No and yes.

I've actually been thinking about the "Youtube problem" for a while now and there are a lot more moving parts here than you might think at first glance. Ultimately, I think that the overwhelming emphasis on online communication cripples us a great deal. Here are just a few reasons:

  • You can count the major online social platforms on one hand. Youtube, Reddit, Facebook, Twitter, Patreon, etc., they can all cut you off at any time and for any reason.
  • Large web services are the only game in town when it comes to reaching a mass audience online. If anything we say or do threatens the shareholders of these platforms, we will be cut off.
  • The internet itself can be shut off. Other countries have done this during uprisings. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. But if your main lines of communication get cut, you're done.

The obvious answer is decentralization, but that isn't happening despite the means of doing so being widely available. Peertube is a thing. Mastadon is a thing. Scutttlebutt Protocol is a thing. Sneakernet is a thing. Hosting your own web page and putting a donation button on the sidebar is a thing. RSS feeds are a thing. Podcasts have more than one distribution source but video content MUST be delivered through Youtube? Simple distribution is covered with or without Youtube.

The problem seems to be a combination of overvaluing convenience, capitulation to planned obsolescence, and the fact that this is a market, for making money, rather than a movement. Organizing on the ground and circulating the material via physical media, in conjunction with multiple online distribution methods, will get us farther than just dicking around on some some rich asshole's server farm.

And if you're wondering how to get the videos off of YT for physical transfer in the first place, there's a long way to do it and an easy way to do it.

I agree with SummerLoveStorey. Additionally, back up that data before you lose it. A 32GB USB 3.0 flash costs less than $10 on Amazon. Sounds like it's used up enough of your time already. Heck, for less than $20, you can get a 128GB usb 3 SanDisk Ultra. That's like a cheap pizza. Just saying...

u/CIV_QUICKCASH · 2 pointsr/chromeos

This may help you getting on sites "only compatible" with IE. It disguises your browser as whatever you set it, so you can trick them into thinking you're on IE and they'll let you pass. If the website only works on IE, that's the designers fault as it is very behind compared to other modern browsers and they should develop for the standards approved by the majority.

You'll need either a cloud printer or a printer with an email to print function to print with a Chromebook.

Your MP3 collection can go on Google drive (the cloud) or you can buy a large memory stick. You get 100GB free of cloud memory for two years when you own a Chromebook, all you need to do is register it with your Google account.

You should always keep hard copies of your data anyway, but I've just checked and 100ish GB hard drive is about 35 dollars, so after 2 years (free with chromebook) seven months(at 5$ a month) your hard drive will pay off. I'd suggest you just back up your music on an old computer.

Sure! There are a ton of great keychain accessories out there but the criteria for mine are all items must:

1: Be < 2" (Preferably 1.5")

2: Fit in my pockets comfortably (jeans)

3: Be used at least once every 3 months
(Ambu Pouch excluded)

Accessories used Most - Least

The Freekey Sytem is the foundation of the keyring and is one of those products that is so elegant in its simplicity and functionality that it seems like it should have been invented years ago.

The SOG Straight Edge Key Knife comes sharp and has held an edge pretty well over the last few months. With its tiny blade it's not going to replace your Ka-Bar anytime soon but I can almost garuntee that you will use it more frequently.

The Swiss+ Tech 6 in 1 Utility Key coupled with The Infora Key Multitool seems to be gaining ground to overtake the SOG Key Knife as top tool in the line up with flat and Phillips screwdriver heads, bottle opener, and serrated blade.

The Streamlight Nano LED Flashlight is an awesome addition to the gang and probobly the one that has saved my ass the most, there are too many times I've wasted time looking for a light source in the dark.

The 2.0 64 GB Kingston Data Traveler SE9 USB drive. Reasonable speed coupled with great durability. The cast in keyhole eliminates the possibilty of losing the USB from a weak tether and defiantly holds a perminent place in my top 5 keychain accesories. Along with its basic utility I keep a file named "If Found: Reward" on it with my information in case I lose my key ring.

The True Utility TelePen telescoping keychain pen is one of those items that doesent get the everyday recognition the others do but is totally fucking clutch when you do need it. I owe a couple side projects I've picked up to this pen, partly because of the writing aspect but more from it as a talking piece.

The InCharge Ultra Portable Charging Cable is a cool little accessory that I thought would get the boot initially but saved my ass when I was in transit and my buddy only had an Apple cable with his charger.

The True Utility FireStash Keyring Lighter is the only item on the list that I haven't actually "needed" but will probobly keep anyway because fire is such a basic necessity and if I ever DO need it I'm probobly going to name my kids True and Utility.

The Ambu Res-Cue keychain CPR mask rounds out the list but might be the most important. Along with it being being a valuable lifesaving/self protection asset it's also super useful for locating my keys. I once read something about humans being able to see more shades of red than any other color and that our minds are geared to "ook out for it. Whether that's true or not it's always the first thing I see when I misplace them and because of its shape it stops my keys from going between the seats.

I didn't have a ton of time to type this up because I'm on my phone at work but I hope this helps!

u/wolfcry0 · 2 pointsr/gadgets

This is my favorite, it's insanely fast (220MB/s) and is built well

u/thisguyeric · 2 pointsr/Roku

All USB specs are designed to be bidirectional. You can buy adapters that convert A to Micro B and connect a regular flash drive or you can buy a flash drive that has a Micro USB connector as well.

Though I'm pretty sure you're still right that the Roku Stick won't support it (now I kind of want to find my adapter and try though).

ETA: you can (mostly) use any USB to any USB, you can buy micro to micro connectors (if you're transferring files between two phones they're actually useful) but if you know your way around a soldering iron you can do all sorts of silly things and daisy chain whatever USB to whatever USB you want (say connecting a phone to a PC by using a male A to female B to male B to female Mini to male Mini to male Micro would, if you were really that bored, work).

ETA2: Correction to my statement: USB is not technically bidirectional, it is half duplex. It cannot both send and receive at the same time, but it can send or receive it just has to do one at a time. For example you can't put files on a USB drive while also taking files off, but you can do one and then the other.

u/DaNPrS · 2 pointsr/homelab

For the price, I think I rather go with the Mikrotik RB2011UAS-RM vs the Edge Lite. I played around with the demos on their site last night and boy those things are feature packed.

I was thinking of getting a drive like this and having a proxy cache and some scrips running from that. That would make a really nice set up :)

u/DadAtH_me · 2 pointsr/homelab

Possibly. They're USB3 32GB Sandisks. I bought 4 of them on Amazon and within a month 3 failed. So I bought the bigger version and had some of those fail and just rebuilt my array with the good ones and

> I can't detect any heat coming off any of them.

Are they in plastic? Because plastic is a good insulator. Try pulling them out so they're still 'in' electrically and then touching the metal casing.

u/renba7 · 2 pointsr/tails

This is the line I am using. Just be sure to get whichever size you want (minimum 4GB) and that you'll need two. I went with one 4GB for the temp and 32GB for the permanent.

How to upgrade your Mid-2012 15-Inch MacBook Pro

Step 1 - Backup your files
For me this took the longest, I'm not the most organized person. I also saved my keychain, apple mail logins, stickeys, etc. I was in the middle of projects that I needed to jump right back into after the upgrade.

Step 2 - Create a macOS installer on the USB drive
    Follow this ---> https://9to5mac.com/2018/10/22/how-to-create-macos-mojave-usb-installer-easy-video/

Step 3 - Plug the new harddrive in via Sata cable usb
This is where my first issue came into play. I skipped ahead and swapped out my harddrives only to try and boot up and my system not recognize the new SSD. I first thought I purchased a dud. The truth is you need to format the new drive for the computer to see it. Plug in the new SSD and follow these instructions to erase and format. I chose Mac OS Extended (journaled) https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT208496

NOTE::: you dont have to use the usb drive, you can install the new SSD first if you want and format from the bootable USB.

Step 4 - Install the new SSD
    Follow this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cfiGF_pjqvM

When installed, hold Option on your keyboard and then turn on. Select the USB macOS installer and follow instructions. Install onto the new SSD. Should take 20-30 min

    Step 5 - The Battery

Follow the instructions in the videos on this page: https://eshop.macsales.com/item/NewerTech/BAP15MBU78W/#owctabs
Make sure you set aside some time to do this. The install is very fast however its the calibration that takes some time. After you install your new battery, turn the computer on to test, there should be a little charge in it. Shut your computer down and then plug in. Let it fully charge, the light on plug should turn green. Then leave it for another 2 hours. Turn the computer on, unplug, turn all power settings off (follow video) and let the computer run until the battery is completely dead. Then wait a number of hours. This will calibrate your battery with your system.

Then plug in and enjoy your new laptop!

Also, if you have an android device, get one of these USB->Micro USB duo devices to give your mobile device/tablet more storage.

I use a Nexus 7 (16gb storage) with a 64GB kingston plug in USB to watch any films or music.

here they are on amazon

However, if what you want is expandable storage, then you might want to take a look a Wifi enabled hard drives

A lot more storage, has its own battery rated to last for ~10 hrs (doesn't consume the N9's battery), and you don't have to worry about future devices having OTG support or not when trying to use it. (it works with anything that is wifi capable).

After OS I have 25.01 GB left. I have no large games on my phone, and the app that uses the most storage is Google play music (current list is 3.5 GB).

For extra storage you could use Google drive 2$ (monthly) for 100GB or if you use Office 365 you already have 2TB on OneDrive.

Or you could buy an usb-c stick.

As a 6P owner, I'ma little biased but all that put aside, I came from a Note 3 so I had the same gripes as you: No expandable storage, no removable battery, etc...Here my solutions to those problems. For the most part the 6P battery will get me through a day of heavy use pretty easily (listening to spotify, watching videos, texting, emailing and whatnot). Just in case I always carry around a portable power bank. As for expandable storage, I would like to point out with Google's photo app, you receive unlimted storage for high quality photos, however, don't quote me on this, but at some point I believe past 1080P it starts to eat into a 10GB limit. I advise using a USB stick for external storage, it's small, portable, and overall very convenient. Best of luck making your decision! It's a tough one! If you have any questions about the 6P just let me know!

Edit: If you are strictly looking just to offload files to get more storage and not transfer them to a computer via usb, this Dongle gives you more storage and it costs less than the previous link. If you do want to move pictures and videos, you can always buy an adapter.

u/evilf23 · 2 pointsr/Nexus6P

i looked a few weeks back, couldnt find a drive with both USB C and USB A male ends like those slick sandisk MicroUSB+USB-A drives . I just bought the male C to female A adapter from the google store ($13) since i want my drives to work on all my devices since i mostly use a flash drive to offload TWRP and titanium backups for safe storage should i need them later on, or i have to wipe my phone. i have a 64GB drive that i also mirror on my network storage because multiple backups is always a good idea, so i need it to work on my main computer and not just my phone.

edit - Just looked again and sandisk now makes a USB C male + USB A Male drive way too expensive $40 for a 32GB model though. must have come out recently, i looked specifically for this not long ago. hope they do a 128GB model for a reasonable price soon.

SB3 is a good controller to start on although you may feel that you’ve learnt everything you can on it within a few months and might want to upgrade.

Personally I don’t think wireless headphones would be a good idea for DJing you may have a lot of latency issues you want want to get some wired ones, I do believe you could use them with serato remote but not completely sure, you won’t be able to connect them to your controller anyway

Pioneer or KRK studio monitors are both amazing, they’re quite expensive though looking at around £250 for a set, so trying to look second hand or look for cheaper alternatives. You probably won’t be able to blare them that loud, but for a good while I would just learn to play using headphones going between the master and cue.

USBs aren’t really required for your controller unless your PC/Laptop doesn’t have a lot of storage then a USB is handy, you’ll want a reliable high memory, Ive linked the one I use at the bottom for gigs.

I’m not sure what you mean by music download, when beginning using YouTube/Soundcloud rips will do but if you ever want to do it professionally I recommend beatport as a 192k song sounds terrible on a proper pa system. It can be expensive £1.12 for a song and even more expensive if you buy a lossless form, but they do deals a lot like 50% off, I also recommend buying albums, toolroom release loads of them that contain around 60 songs for around £10 and they’re for the most part pretty good songs you’ll find a lot of good hidden gems there.

What kind of games were you planning on playing on it?

You could add something like this and leave it plugged in all the time or if you need the USB ports get an SD card instead. The SD slot on the laptop may run off of a USB 2.0 bus though so it would run slower if that were the case.

That one works fine, but it's not a good flash drive. It overheats severely. This one and this one are better.

As for extra storage, from my research I've found that the Lexar S45 USB Drive offers the highest read speeds available. The only down side is it's annoying blue read/write light. Others that have one have simply painted over the light with black nail polish, though. :D

Don't buy the sandisk low profile flash drive, they overheat and break very quickly.

Never put any sensitive material that you care for being lost, on a sd card/usb stick but they are great for media storage. I wouldn't run apps off the usb stick, it will prematurely kill it imo.

If your computer has a tiny slot, then you can put a microSD card in there. You can get a card like this for around $20 at Best Buy and other tech stores. You can move your files into the microSD as opposed to on your main drive, saving space.

If your computer has a larger slot about the size of your thumb, you can get an SD card. Some microSD cards have SD card adapters, which you can tell by the packaging. If you use Amazon, this $20 128 gigabyte card from Samsung and this $10 64 gigabyte card from Silicon Power would both do the trick. If none such a port exists, I recommend this $18 128 gigabyte flash drive from SanDisk.

Also, if you could tell me the model number (usually located on the back of the computer labeled under "model", or in Control Panel along with RAM), then I'd be able to help you more.

Depends on her major. Either way, portability is key.

Engineering benefits from decently powerful Windows machine, except computer/software engineering, which benefits from Mac. I have a pricey Dell XPS 15 which is highly powerful and quite nice.

Defer to her judgement for other majors. Personally I loved my Mac and found it to be *much* more convenient for most use around campus. WiFi connected faster, it went to sleep and woke up faster, it was super easy to drop files to my friends, etc. The one downside is Microsoft Powerpoint is worse on Mac. A MacBook Pro is probably better than a MacBook Air, but someone else can comment on that. Annoyingly, all Apple laptops have now gone all in on USB-C, which means she needs an adapter for ordinary USB ports. Pick up a USB C to USB 3.0 Hub (like this, which includes ethernet, VGA, HDMI, etc) and a dual mode USB C/3.0 flash drive for her. Finally, Apple gives decent education discounts (see here). You can use this discount at the Apple Store at the Mall of Louisiana. Most accessories are best purchased online, not in store. Apple Care is not a bad idea.

By the way, she gets free Microsoft Office through LSU. Don't buy software for her until she's sure it isn't in the software store (TigerWare)

Before she asks or a sales person suggests, she probably doesn't need an iPad or a new phone for college. If anything, consider getting her a second monitor for her room (they're cheap--like this) and can do double duty for streaming Netflix if she's in a dorm. They're nice when you need to multitask (have notes open while researching), or have your online textbook open on one screen while your homework is on the other, etc)

I've had the same issue (but I'm using BleemSync). I got one of these right-angle adapters and it works with an old 8gb USB 2.0 drive, but not with my low profile Sandisk Cruzer (64gb). I even reinstalled BleemSync and the kernel. Ordered a new OTG adapter and waiting for it to arrive.

Edit: After some last-ditch efforts, I've found my OTG adapter works but your drive must be formatted to Fat32. /u/DistNZ give that a try, hopefully it works for you too (I used a program called guiformat to do so).

Edit 2: After installing all my RetroArch files (something like 40,000+ files) it is back to not working with OTG. Back to square 1.

Edit 3: It appears to be related to my power supply & cable. Specific cables and power supplies work while others don't. A 5.25V 3A power supply I use for a Raspberry Pi does not work, while an iPhone charger does.

Looks like it might do the slide out thing you're not sure about but it is REALLY small for USB 3.0 (they need to be big to keep up with speed) and consequently it suffers a little on speed but it perfectly meets all your other requirements.

Just buy a regular size drive, you get faster speeds and it's harder to lose/easier to pull out of the PC.

Something like this is a great deal for getting the absolute fastest read/write speeds for a reasonable price.

Kingston drives may look nice but have terrible performance and absurd prices.

Surprised no one has mentioned how fragile external hdd are in comparison to a USB Flash media drive.

An external HDD (especially one that travels a lot) is less robust than a USB flash drive.

Also, some external HDD do not play well in some computers.

The external HDD is larger and requires more power.

As for speeds, I use one of these every day for sneaker net and it is quite fast.

For me it is a no brainer. The USB is far and away better for my purposes.

u/avatar28 · 1 pointr/gadgets

You don't even need an SSD. Normal flash media is crazy fast these days. My USB flash drive can hit speeds close to 200 MB/sec on a USB 3.0 port.

Is this a spindle drive or solid state?

If it's not solid state, then yeah, well you know what you need to do. I bought some fast USB3 flash drives (64GiB) to load projects on to when I still had 7200rpm drives in my computers. But I've moved my production PC over to SSD and no longer need to do that.

u/DarkZyth · 1 pointr/Android

If you are worried about space, get the 32GB and then buy a separate OTG adapter. Something like the Sandisk Ultra 32GB/64GB OTG adapter or one that uses MicroSD cards like the Dash Micro. I myself use the Patriot Stellar Lite 32GB. Has a Micro USB for connecting to my Note 5 and a normal USB for connection to my computer. I feel like I've mentioned these quite a lot lately lol. Guess it's because most people don't realize you can still have more storage without a MicroSD card slot (although not a permanent replacement).

u/darkharlequin · 1 pointr/Android

While I completely agree with you that there needs to be expandable storage, there is a fix around this now that all modern phones have usb host mode and otg cables are available. I just use my standard flash drives that I carry around and a small otg cable.

They also sell otg flashdrives now like this one which has both a standard and micro USB adapter built in that you can just plug directly into your phone.

u/fireinsideme · 1 pointr/lgg2

So when you type "adb devices" into the terminal, nothing pops up? I did the same thing you did, and my computer wouldn't let me mount my phone as USB storage. Thankfully adb still recognized it and I was able to push a ROM to storage. If adb doesn't recognize it, you might have to try one of these. http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B00HR78S2Q?pc_redir=1409313140&robot_redir=1

I don't have one, but I'm willing to bet no. That isn't flash memory, its a spinning drive, which needs power.

Also depends on the phone. Samsungs work with otg drives. Nexus devices you can use stick mount.

I bought this cable for just that reason.

I plug my WD 1TB hard drive in, connect it to my battery backup using a micro USB cable, and then use it to transfer movies to my Nexus 7.

Alternatively, you can load up a micro USB drive, but it takes an extra step since you have to use a computer.

> NFC locked to Apple's apps (for now): And for what purpose am I restricted by this?

Because when Apple Pay launches, it will be the only payment app you can use, therefore restricting choice. Android's NFC implementation allows any app to use it, so for payments, I might want to use Google Wallet or PayPal or Square or my own banks service.

> I have 200gb of expanded storage in the cloud. Why do I need hardware expandable storage? Does the new nexus come with hardware expandable storage? No. Again, your talking shit.

We all have cloud storage. Again, expandable storage means choice. If you want an extra 32GB storage on your iPhone, you have to buy it from Apple up front. I purchased a 64GB MicroSD card from Amazon for just over £20, the equivalent storage for Apple devices would be around £100.

> No support for off the shelf USB devices (flash drives etc): Again, why is this restricting me? There is no purpose that cannot be met by apples alternative.

Again, choice. A standard 64GB USB OTA Flash Drive costs about £20 on Amazon. The Lightning equivalent will cost over $120. But if you want to pay over 4 times the price for the same thing, be my guest.

    > Can you change default apps with android? Can you use bing maps or Apple maps instead of Google maps?

Yes, absolutely. When you ask for navigation, it prompts you which app you want to use, either just this once, or always. It's based on Android's "Intents" system. When I ask to set an alarm, if I have a third party alarm clock app, it asks me to choose which app to use. Same with most "Intent" actions (e.g. open a web page, send an email, dial a contact, send a tweet, upload a photo).

    > Can you remove the Google search bar and use duckduckgo?

No, but you can install a homescreen widget for whatever search engine you want.

    > What your talking about here is crap.

Based on your lack of knowledge about basic Android functionality such as "Intents", I'd say you are full of it as well.

    > Every mobile browser uses apples WebKit. But anyway, how does this restrict the user in any way shape or form?

Wrong again. Chrome now uses Blink for rendering and V8 for JavaScript. Firefox uses Gecko for rendering and SpiderMonkey for JavaScript. Opera uses its own internals too. This is restrictive as you don't have choice, like only being able to use IE on Windows. Again, your distinct lack of knowledge is disturbing.

    > My file system is handled in the cloud and on my device. Instead of been restricted, I am easily able to manage my files without the need. The user is not restricted.

Believe it or not, Android also has cloud functionality too. It's also incredibly useful to navigate a filesystem natively, for copying files/media from your phone to a computer or another device for example.

    > No MTP/DragDrop support: Again, how am I restricted?

Because you can't copy media to/from your device unless you have an iTunes compatible device (Mac/PC). You are restricted in terms of choice of devices.

    > I understand the need for this on android because it is ugly. But even launchers only partially change the look. Native apps are still ugly. Again, how am I restricted? Apple have an award winning UI.

Really? You mean the fixed grid of icons and basic folder support? Also, why do you have to hide unused apps (Newsstand) in a folder to get rid of it? Again, you are restricted due to lack of choice. There are dozens of launcher paradigms (icon grids, lists, metro tiles, dashboard, etc.) and many more implementations of them. But as you've only used the one iPhone launcher, I'll forgive your ignorance (again).

    > You should maybe have a look at a dictionary and find the actual meaning of restricted.

You should understand the concept that a restriction for you doesn't equate to restrictions in general.

Anyway, I'm done here, you clearly have no idea what Android offers, and are basing your opinions on fallacies or extremely outdated information.

Most android phones can read USB drives now (which are in reality far more convenient for data transfer and used in many more places than SD cards - I have one of these http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/aw/d/B00LIXJ54K ) not to mention having decent sizes of built in memory to boot (I've barely used any of the 64gb on my one plus one). Honestly, as someone who spends most of my (work) computer time in the browser and word processor, there are really two issues that would keep me from using the iPad Pro for work: the keyboard isn't quite as nice to type on, and it's easier to fine-select text with a mouse/trackpad than using the iOS interface. So first of all, not all USB 3.0 sticks actually run at 3.0 speeds. There are many variants out there that will run at standard or even low end usb 2.0 speeds but will be "USB 3.0" because they are compatible. Look for reviews for the sticks and tested speeds (not just what the manufacturer lists). Anything above 150 MB/s should be fine as its pretty much only going to affect loading times.

I just did a quick search for a drive and something like this should work really well. I'm not a fan of the micro USB sticks for constant read/writes, I've not had much luck with them on my NAS/Firewalls/ESXI boxes as OS disks.

Just read a 3rd party software can do FAT32 as big as 128GB.

I just ordered this dual port SanDisk 128GB MicroUSB / USB. Crossing fingers.

If it works, I will also use a NetDot magnetic charge adapter to 1. protect my charge port, and 2. easy mounting of Sandisk.

You posted 2GB. Also watch this video.

You should try copying anything larger than 512MB and show him what happens.

This is a real 2TB flash drive, from a reputable brand and it costs $1455.

In my case (and I guess it depends on the OTG adapter - this one is mine), but I had to plug in the OTG cord into the back, then immediately plug in the USB drive. I noticed when I plugged the USB drive into the OTG that the light would come on before I even had plugged it into the Classic, which made me think that it wasn't recognized properly among startup.

I guess you could also plug the USB drive into the OTG, plug the OTG into the Classic, then plug the power cord into the OTG.

However before that just to double-check I had reinstalled the custom kernel and I also reinstalled the USB payload file from this comment. Just in case it might be one of those two. I didn't bother reinstalling Bleemsync since I had stupidly already put all my games on it, and was too lazy to reformat it.

It took me like 5 hours last night to figure this out, that's how I got all of this information lol

And get a "fit" USB memory stick to keep in the USB port.

u/samusgalliumthroaway · 1 pointr/GalliumOS

Thanks. I think I might try sending the drive back and getting another instead.

Is this the Samsung drive you're referring to? It's a little big though... do you know of any other compact/smaller ones that might be good?

I would love something like this (i.e., as small as possible). But this one is USB 2.0 (and I don't know if it'd be compatible or if it'd have any overheating issues).

On another note, if I got a new USB stick, would it be possible to copy the contents of the old one onto the new one? I spent a couple days setting everything up on the SanDisk Ultra Fit and would love to not have to do that again... I realize it's not as simple as copy and paste, so wondering how I might be able to do it?

SanDisk 64GB Cruzer Fit USB Flash... https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07MDXBTL1?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share

Works flawlessly using bleemsync without a hub but keep it formatted in fat32. Mine is almost 100% full and every game is working.

Took me less than 5 minutes to get stup. I also added a USB 2.0 hub so I have plenty of charging.

This works before the 9.2 update and it's pretty awesome. I use it for my pictures and videos.

u/StarGeekSpaceNerd · -1 pointsr/techsupport

You mean you "Wish" you bought a 2 TB flash drive.

Amazon has a 2 TB flash drive for over a grand, so there's no way you got one for $3.

u/Salmon_Quinoi · -2 pointsr/apple

> Sideload apps

You can side load apps.

>Home screen is fully rearrangeable

Wut

>You can connect things like flash drives to quickly read files

You mean like these flash drives that work with iPhones?

>More intuitive notification system

Seems subjective, but ok.

>Fast charging (more related to hardware but no iOS devices have it)

iPhones do have fast charging using the iPad adapter, they just don't advertise it.

Want to see something cool?

A USB C and USB A flash drive. It's $17 for 64GB. If you're on a train or a plane, it won't affect you having a flash drive hanging out of your phone.

Problem solved.

u/Cossil · -7 pointsr/videos

I picked this up since I have ordered the new MBP. This seems to be the perfect drive for this transitionary period, as it allows for interfacing with USB-A.

You're right that the options for everything are rather sparse. This is the pain of being an early adopter. The market will follow Apple though, and there will be more options sooner rather than later because of them.
