Why are Tim Tams so damn delicious!?
Edit: Apparently you can buy them on amazon.com!
Edit 2: I am aware of the Tim Tam Slam and plan on doing it the next time I find some.
These biscuits/cookies are not available in all countries! There are several stores in America that sell them year round, but they are few and far between.
Here is what you're going to do: you're going to cheat.
First, buy Sodium Citrate. Sodium citrate is a very powerful emulsifier, and will let you make cheese sauce of a perfect consistency with no guesswork, using just cheese and, well, that's pretty much it. The result is a sauce where the cheese flavor is not covered up by milk or butter.
There are a lot of recipes that you can find online using sodium citrate, but in my experience the best is this: boil 1lb of dry pasta to just shy of al dente in salted water, drain but reserve the pasta liquid, add 1-1.5 cups of the pasta liquid back in, add 1Tbsp sodium citrate, then gradually, mixing as you go, add 1lb of shredded cheese. Use whatever cheese or combination of cheeses you like, use more cheese if you want a saucier mac and less cheese if you want a less saucy mac. You'll probably need to add more liquid--if you do, use beer, wine or the pasta liquid, and only add a bit at a time. Mix everything up well over low heat and you'll get a perfectly creamy mac and cheese with intense cheese flavor. You can also add spices and other flavors--I like a little hot sauce, a little garlic powder, a little paprika and a teaspoon or two of brown sugar.
This sauce will never, ever break. You can try your best to break it but it won't happen, and if it does just add another pinch of sodium citrate, heat it up, mix it together and problem solved. So stick it in a casserole dish, top it with bread crumbs or cheese, and bake it just the same way you would a normal mac and cheese!
Do you want a [2 pound bag] (https://www.amazon.com/dp/B004QLOFN2/ref=cm_sw_r_other_apa_AGTszb5R7HC48) or a [6 pound bag] (https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00GPSDXA0/ref=cm_sw_r_sms_apa_NITszbXFW10S3)?
'sup mofos, y'all ready?!
one of my all-time fave snacks pre-keto used to be a warm Auntie Anne's pretzel from the stand at the mall. this recipe is a surprisingly truthful approximation of the taste/texture (minus the grease) and definitely achieves that crisp but flexible bread-y texture that we all crave from a quality pretzel.
i call my dipping sauce "bowling alley cheese" because it reminds me of that particular variety of neon-orange nacho cheese that is traditionally served at your finer bowling establishments. ;)
these pretzels are pretty yummy on their own but dipping them into the cheese really catapults them from good to great. they're also quite simple to make and they'll be an easy sell to kids & non-keto'ers.

> (PS: this cheese dough is mild enough in flavor that you can modify it and do a sweet version too; just skip the cheese sauce & Italian herbs, season pretzels with cinnamon & butter, then melt down some dark/keto-friendly chocolate for dippies.)
My time to shine This isn't slowcooking, but those packets make really good butter chicken in less than 30 min. The wife and I have that at least once every two weeks.
Thanks! From that link, I figured out they're called Arcor Strawberry Buds. Go nuts, people.

Just a tip, I recently discovered the wonders of sodium citrate, an emulsifying salt. It lets you melt cheese in a saucepan without the cheese separating; it becomes a very smooth sauce that you can then pour over nachos. The best part about it is that it's very easy to make and lets you use whatever kind of cheese you like without resorting to velveeta or cornstarch and evaporated milk, or anything artificial. A big bag of it is $11 on amazon and it lasts forever
Geeze, if you're going to say something like that, put up the damn link! That being said, $12.25, even with free two-day shipping, is a bit steep.
Since I didn't see anyone mention this here, I figure I ought to:
If you like the texture of melted Velveeta (and, let's be real, who doesn't), get on Amazon and by a bag of food-grade Sodium Citrate.
Here's a link. it seems expensive, but one bag will last you for a very long time.
This stuff is the chemical compound in stuff like Velveeta and Kraft slices thq t makes it melt so well. Mix about 14 grams (about 3 teaspoons) of the stuff to half a bottle of beer, bring to a boil, mix in about a pound of any freshly shredded cheese, and then blend with an emulsion blender.
Bam, perfect cheese sauce.
The last time I did this, I did exactly what I said above, and added 1 pound of taco spiced beef and a can of Rotel, and it vanished quickly.
Let me be clear: I have no problems with Velveeta, it's great. That said, this stuff allows you to get Velveeta like melt out of ANY cheese you want, or any mixture of cheeses, and that's awesome.
they still make that...

Finally someone said it: They eat more quality foods than crap
Edit: 2 chicken breasts and 8oz of sushi rice after workout is the best, mandatory sriracha hot sauce is must.
This is the sushi rice brand I get
Nishiki Premium Rice, Medium Grain, 15-Pound Bag https://www.amazon.com/dp/B004NRLAVY/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_cFzwxbRFH4Z86
Forgot to add, avocado on top of sushi rice is da bomb.
I rotate, one week rice next week potatoes. Rice is known for high concentration of arsenic, that's why I rotate.

For some of the funniest shit to ever grace Amazon reviews
You can buy it from Post, and on amazon.com. I just had a four pack shipped to my house last month. Definitely not out of production.
Yep. And cheaper. http://www.amazon.com/Miracle-Frooties-Fruit-Tablets/dp/B004SOMH3M/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1376710211&sr=8-2&keywords=miracle+fruit

Literally the base of every single meal I eat. Add canned chicken, Rotel, and Valentina hot sauce and you have a Mexican meal. Do tuna, kimchi, and sriracha and you have a Southeast Asian meal.
Both options are a million times better if you already have a spice stash handy. If not, you can buy those premade seasoning packets on Amazon in something like taco or chow mein flavor or something.
You use curry cubes as a pre-made roux that forms the base of the curry. S&B is pretty popular in the states, so I guess this
The World Market near me has them. You can also find them on Amazon.
80 cm of fun times.
Love getting these tablets and then eating lemonds / limes. Makes them taste like candy
I also eat a lot of more bland but healthy meals, and the biggest lifesaver for me recently was adding furikake (Japanese rice seasoning) to my food.
I use Nori Komi Furikake specifically and it makes a lot of bland food a lot better - it's mainly just sesame seeds and seaweed flakes, though there's other versions with different fish flavors.
Wish list: Giant Toblerone
Actually purchased: Shark cordless vacuum, because some bloke on here said they were really good once and if you can't trust a random comment on /r/casualuk then who can you trust? Edit: I should point out I have been looking at these for a few months and it is actually a decent enough offer compared to the usual prices.
What? https://www.amazon.com/dp/B004N5FR06?tag=price19210-20&ascsubtag=wtbs_5dc8980ea1bdb22ec457faeb
$10.99 for one.
Corner store takes a pretty uniform 60% markup on all their products, and likes to offer products like this to keep people from under utilizing their meal plan, which is just as skeevy as it sounds.
I mean, Candy.com sells them for a huge $24.99, while Hershey's themselves sell them for $19.99, but walmart, jet and amazon stay firm at $10.99, so maybe RIT is getting ripped off by the grocery distributor they use. But the higher prices at those locations kind of makes sense considering their only place to profit is candy.
Coho would probably argue about their buying power not availing them a cheaper bulk price, but whatever, they could be selective about whether their 60% markup takes certain items beyond the scope of reason, but they choose not to.
aiight
Rice Eating Meetup on Friday, somewhere in Cobo: Be nice 4 free rice. Y'all better bring some furikake to that meetup bc eating with only soy sauce is kinda boring imo
Furikake!
or look up sushi rice with the vinegar sauce
I'm not in the Houston, but Amazon has always been good for my molecular gastronomy needs. $15 for a 16-oz container, and 2-day shipping with prime.

these ones are awesome too.
I love Sambal Oelek https://www.amazon.com/Sambal-Oelek-Chilli-Paste-18oz/dp/B000JMDHCC
This is exactly what I was going to recommend. You can also pick up sodium citrate on Amazon. Works wonderfully. For years I've been on a quest for what I would consider the best melting/falvorful macaroni and cheese. Only after I found this tip, did I achieve that goal.
For me, the perfect cheese is the whole foods unaged cheddar. Several cups of this with some whole milk and sodium citrate makes perfect mac and cheese. Change ratios a bit and you'll have a slicable block of cheese that melts wonderfully.
Sodium Citrate
tried to find a link for the cheese but couldn't find it.
btw, if you can't find sodium citrate you can make it with baking soda and citric acid.
http://www.reddit.com/r/chemistry/comments/1d5z2z/food_guy_with_a_chemistry_question/
Good luck
You can order them from Amazon. link
A roux based sauce is not the best way to go, although it can be ok with more milk to thin it out and really sharp cheddar to keep the flavor focused, but sodium citrate is the way to the sauce you are describing. It is cheap, easy to source and stable for bloody ever.

Miracle fruit tablets 12.95 on Amazon
you can buy them by the pound online
I found this on amazon, in case you are struggling to find an Asian market.
https://www.amazon.com/Jfc-International-Seasoning-Furikake-1-7/dp/B0006G5KEY
What you’re looking for is Golden Curry. You can find it or an equivalent at roughly every Asian market on the planet, or online. Use half a box if cooking for 1-2, whole box for 4. I always caramelize onions before and add them in as well, and you can always add potatoes / carrot etc. It’s ridiculously thick after cooked down for 15 minutes or so even without potato (which add more starchy thickness).
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0011UGYLM/
Make sure you stir frequently / watch it while cooking to avoid developing thick curry film (though it stirs right back in). Preboil potatoes (and probably carrots as well to an extent) if you want them in the mix
Sodium Citrate would be a great addition - it would help keep the cheese emulsified and the queso smooth. When I make mac'n' cheese I usually follow the modernist mac and cheese recipe from modernist cooking, which recommends about 4% of the weight of the cheese worth of CS to be added, e.g. 4g for every 100g of cheese. Looks like their queso recipe uses the same scaling.
I'd also recommend possibly simmering the cheese / milk in a separate pan and adding the sauteed veggies later, so you can run it through a blender or use an immersion blender to smooth the mixture further, but if you whisk briskly this might not be an issue.
This isn't a slow cooker recipe, but if you have sodium citrate or have time to purchase it (I get mine on Amazon), I think the Modernist Cuisine Cheese sauce is the best. The cheese is super smooth and silky. Make sure to pick a high quality block of cheese and have a kitchen scale.
You could always start.
so evil. i like it.
also: why not some sugarless gummy bears?
if you are going to punish them, do it right >:D
As someone else pointed out, it's a known side effect of consuming sugar alcohols. Check out the reviews for these sugar-free gummy bears on Amazon:

$1 more, 4 times as much as one of those little jars.
https://www.amazon.com/Saf-Instant-Yeast-Pound-Pouch/dp/B0001CXUHW
It has the silky texture similar to velveeta but with so much cheesy flavor especially if you use sharp cheddar. You can get the sodium citrate from Amazon for pretty cheap; $14 and I've yet to make a dent in my tub of it after making that recipe a few times.

11 lbs, so 2.2 kg. I found some reference to a 5 kg jar for professionals, but only in French.
You do not lie. Only a pinko-commie would disagree with you.
All my brothers are getting one of these in their stocking from me
http://www.amazon.com/Reeses-Holiday-Peanut-1-Pound-Package/dp/B004N5FR06
That is almost 2300 calories, 4 days worth of saturated fat, 240 grams of sugar and yes ... they will thank me profusely.
furikake
Best butter chicken recipe I have, that gets me closest to restaurant is the Taste of India Butter Chicken Paste... I usually add a can of coconut cream and a 1/3 cup of water to it.
I've been lurking on this sub for a while. I bet you guys would love Japanese curry. Japanese curry is dead easy, and delicious. Just boil some meat and veg (carrots, celery, potatoes, apples for me) and add a block of S&B curry roux. I'd go for the hot, which isn't hot at all. (BTW that price is steep) Bulk it out with rice. It's great.

Solid recipe! I'd recommend messing around with some higher temperatures, I like to do my baguettes at around 500-550. Also, buying a pound of yeast like this is generally less than $5 at a store, and will last you years if stored properly. Happy baking :)
Thai style omelet: 2 eggs mixed with a slice of lime, a tsp of corn starch, and a splash of fish sauce. I had that with steamed rice sprinkled with this crack and kimchi. It's delicious and my favorite easy go-to meals.
It's salty and kinda sweet Japanese seasoning usually made with nori and sesame seeds. My favorites are the basic one and the on with tiny dried shrimp.

Trust me... I've been trying to make curries at home for the last 10 years. I've tried many recipes, from scratch fresh ground spices, to boxed spices, and even other pastes. This brand has become a staple for me now. I can whip up a dish in 30 minutes and it's better than a lot of restaurants around me. My favorite paste they sell is the chicken curry, tastes like an authentic dhaba style curry you can get in India.
ps) I have fond memories of helping my dad make "chicken" (usually this meant desi style curry) growing up and it wasn't until I became older that I appriciated how much I enjoyed that.

Curry would be a good bet. Pick your asian style (Chinese curry, japanese curry, indian curry, thai curry, etc). Curry lasts a while and you don't have the problem of the food getting soggy with sauce since it's saucy to begin with. Get fried tofu instead of meat for protein to keep cost low. For a simple, easy, quick batch of curry, look for this at your local grocer: http://www.amazon.com/Golden-Curry-Sauce-Mix-8-4-Ounce/dp/B0011UGYLM/

They are using instant active yeast, it is used by professional bakers and in my opinion is superior to active dry.
There are a lot of manufacturers and types but in general the two most popular types are your standard red label gold label.
Red label is just standard yeast, but gold label is osmotolerant which is meant to be used in dough with high levels of sugar like brioche.

As someone in precisely OP's shoes, I cannot recommend [furikake] (http://www.amazon.com/JFC-Nori-Komi-Furikake-Seasoning/dp/B0006G5KEY) enough. My local Japanese market has shakers for $2 each, and they turn steamed white rice into a flavorful meal.
Nah, he uses these.
He's a piece of shit.
On amazon they occasionally have 40-50% off "Kitchen of India" seasoning. They are AWESOME!! I recommend the butter chicken curry and chicken curry seasoning. keep checking slickdeals.net for the next sale. (usually just cook boneless chicken breast cubed up and after browning the chicken add in the seasoning and water and let it simmer. DAMN good over rice) http://www.amazon.com/Kitchens-India-Butter-Chicken-3-5-Ounce/dp/B000V17MLS/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=grocery&qid=1268424032&sr=8-1
Needs some sauce! I get those packages of curry blocks that you store in the pantry, break one off in some water on the stove, simmer for 5 minutes and it's delicious!
1 tsp of sodium citrate per pound of cheese, dissolve it in a bit of beer or water or wine or, unno, grappa or whatever if you want to give it some more flay-ver, you just need enough to cover the bottom of your pan. Heat it to boiling and begin adding your cheese (grated or moderately chopped works) while stirring. Experiment to get the desired consistency. A block of pepper jack basically turns into perfect fucking queso.
Why not just by a huge jar of Nutella and fill it yourself? That's what's inside fererro rochers.
Hate to break it to you, 400 grams isn't large. Try wrapping your chops around this.
Breaking a piece off can be difficult.

If you really wanted to be frugal and give yourself a bit of an ascetic test you could buy a large bag of rice and a multivitamin. You would be fine for the month, and just think how good that first real meal would be when the month is over. Plus, you'd save a lot of that card for other things. If you wanted to make it less harsh, you could buy a few splurge foods like:
Spaghetti-O's (you could actually just buy these and be fine for the month too, 5 cans a day = $5 x 30 days = $150)
Mountain House dehydrated meals
Mac and Cheese
Any number of other things, really. The rice is an absolute frugal grocery staple. Beyond that, go to Amazon and search the listings under Grocery>Packaged Meals & Side Dishes. Just don't forget a multivitamin.
Inside will always be dirty if you are dry tumbling, to cut down dust you can use rice: https://www.amazon.com/Nishiki-Premium-Medium-Grain-15-Pound/dp/B004NRLAVY?th=1

I like keeping this on hand for a super easy weeknight dinner plus lunches. I'll add chicken thighs, chick peas, onions, and spinach and season to taste.
Another one I like is this chicken and biscuits by tasty https://tasty.co/recipe/chicken-biscuits-bake. Delicious during the winter but not the healthiest meal. I just bake the biscuits while making it instead of they're way.
I'll keep a bag of frozen stir fry veggies and chicken thighs for chicken stir fry and rice or this stewed chicken https://www.allrecipes.com/recipe/83421/trinidad-stewed-chicken/. Drumsticks are great in this recipe too and are cheaper too. Adding a carribean hot sauce/spices to this one helps a ton too over just red pepper flakes.
This because it's quite possibly the best cereal ever. And I just ran out of cereal before I began typing this haha. Thank you for the contest!
A can of harden the f--- up? If he doesn't have time to buy food (which takes maybe an hour a week) how does he have time to eat food? How is he even still alive? Maybe get him a map to the nearest Costco and go buy a giant bag of beans and rice. Aldi is cheap as heck too if there is one of those nearby. You can literally eat for a $1 a meal like this.
Muscle milk is nothing special nutritionally, but it is expensive.
Edit:
If you are really legitimately concerned, or just want to be nice, and are in the US, you can get some food on Amazon. Order him a bag of rice and many cans of beans. Should at least keep him from starving to death for a while. You can get dried beans much cheaper, but that requires soaking and thus planning meals in advance (which might be his actual problem).
If the problem is just that he doesn't know how to cook, get him this basic cook book, and a sauce pan or two. Teach a man to fish, etc. etc.
Also, assuming you are in the US and are a student (I saw "internship") you can sign up for a free 6 month prime membership and get free shipping; just put a note in your calendar to cancel after 6 month period.
To me at least, having my brother send me food would be a sign that I need to get my shit together, but that might only be because I already have my shit together.
Arcor, if these are the ones you're talking about.
Mouth was watering so I bought these, anyone else want em, http://www.amazon.com/Arcor-Strawberry-Buds-2Lb/dp/B004QLOFN2/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1345864367&sr=8-3&keywords=strawberry+hard+candy
I'm seconding /u/might_be_a_troll here. Get some sodium citrate on amazon and then follow this recipe. All you need for a sauce is cheese, liquid, and the sodium citrate. For liquid try stock, wine, or beer instead of water.
For those interested, you can get alternate versions of the gummy bears from hell.
These are not identical, having, as a sweetener, Maltitol instead of Lycasin.
Maltitol is the active ingredient in Lycasin, so they will probably have the same effect if enough is consumed, but it might not be as dramatic as the original hell-bears.
There is also a 5 pound version that is probably the same, but the ingredients aren't listed on Amazon, so not certain...
I've been really going down the rabbit hole with cheese sauces since I started making beer cheese dip for Oktoberfest a few years ago. The things I've learned are:
This all goes for creamy mac & cheese and sauce but I did a baked mac 'n beer cheese for Oktoberfest this year (topped with homemade marble rye bread crumbs) that was phenomenal. All I did was take that creamy recipe, drop it in a 9" x 13" pan, top it with the bread crumbs, and bake it at high heat for 15 minutes or so just to brown up the topping. My advice for doing this baked version is to use more roux and less milk/beer than you would normally. It set up into a delicious baked loaf of cheese and pasta without any egg or other binder. The result was super rich and flavorful.
Haribo Gummy Bears are the fucking best. None of that sugar free bullshit laxative.
a 1lb mag of lucky charms charms
someone gifted this to me in march and i still have a ton left
This is what you need. Make sure to eat them in front of the kids so they can suffer and eat their marshmallows cut with oats.
8 pounds of cereal marshmallows This is the weirdest and most awesome thing I could think of.
Get some sodium citrate and use this recipe for silky mac and cheese.
It is slightly harder than Kraft and dirties a few more dishes, but infinitely better and more fun as you can choose the cheese. My favorite is to use a white sharp cheddar cheese and smoked gouda.
Fun times can also be had by using pepperjack cheese and cheddar to basically make fresh nacho cheese sauce. If you're spice head you can use habeñero-jack.
EDIT: I forgot the best part of this cheese sauce. It actually reheats perfectly! You can make a batch of the sauce ahead of time and use it for several days afterwards so you just have boil pasta and add the previously made sauce.
I doubt "real" cheese will melt like you are hoping without some help (evaporated milk + starch or sodium citrate).
I had a hard time making any kind of stable cheese sauce until I ordered some sodium citrate. Sprinkle it in with the cheese (3-5% by weight) and the cheese melts instead of just decomposing, and stays stable in its softened state.
You can get it by Monday on Amazon: http://www.amazon.com/Sodium-Citrate-Non-GMO-Molecular-Gastronomy/dp/B00BLPNMYY
A 1lb package of yeast on amazon is the same price/cheaper than the 4oz jars of yeast you can get at the grocery stores (at least around me).
I usually put it in a freezer bag in the freezer and use it to refill the last jar I bought from the store like 3 years ago.
Get a pizza stone (or an unglazed tile, or some granite) and a pizza peel. I haven't got a peel yet so used the back of a tray to slide it on to the stone.
I used this guy, Frank Pinello's recipe. He owns one of the top pizza places in New York that has ties to the oldest pizza places there.
Dough -
Then just mix that all up and stick it in the fridge for anywhere from a few hours to 5 or so days. It will make 4 10ish inch pizzas. I personally think it is a good place to start off. I have made 7 so far and they were better than any take away pizza place in my country.
One of my favorite recipes is known as hurricane popcorn.
You can easily make your own at home like this:
Pop your popcorn as you normally would (mircowave or stovetop).
Toss with a mix of melted butter, a little toasted sesame oil, and a little soy sauce.
Then add furikake (Japanese seasoning of crushed seaweed and sesame seeds), and [rice crackers] (http://www.amazon.com/Umeya-Hana-Rice-Crackers-Toasted/dp/B001AYDRTQ/).
You're looking for Furikake, rice seasoning. There are several different flavors, I usually get the fish/seaweed flavor, it's pretty good. It goes well on ramen too!
If you have an Asian/international grocery store nearby they'll have a lot more stuff like this.
This is exactly what I do every game night! My friend and I will play a video game for almost the entire evening and I'll just make a bunch of snacks instead of us stopping for dinner.
Some of my favorites include:
If I am going to snack a lot, I try to focus on sating as many different needs as possible, which is why a crunchy texture is the main focus point of most of my snacks, and then taste.
If you don't want to hassle with making your own, Sambal Oelek is pretty similar but 0g of carbs. I've heard of people just putting it through a food processor to make it more smooth like sriracha.
aotd: This, I believe /u/mehimehi can confirm its spiciness, and also this. Btw, I don't think these can be categorized as 'sauce', they are too thick.

Butter chicken!
I don't make it from scratch but I use this packet of seasoning:
https://www.amazon.com/Kitchens-India-Butter-Chicken-3-5-Ounce/dp/B000V17MLS
I also add about a cup of red lentils and add extra water for additional protein and fiber. You can skip the butter and cream if you want... or maybe just add a splash of half and half... I leave out the butter and don't even notice. Sometimes when cauliflower is in season i'll use that instead of chicken. I love this stuff!
Sandwiches... thinly sliced or pounded down with a mallet and cooked in a skillet. Add a favorite bread, lettuce, tomatoes, cheese, etc. I hit up the salad bar at the store for toppings sometimes too.
Hello! Do you mind me asking, is it [this] (https://www.amazon.com/Taste-India-Butter-Chicken-Sauce/dp/B00E1FSKOS) or this ?? If neither, can you direct me to the amazon link? Thanks in advance!
Just a heads up, the "Butter Chicken Curry" that is linked in the article contains some added sugar. I'm not super familiar with different types of curry and I don't know what the taste would be like, but the "Chicken Curry" does not have any added sugar.
Otherwise, this looks awesome and I can't wait to try it!
There probably are versions of it in the "Asian" food section of your regular grocery store. By the soy sauce/teriyaki sauce/baby corn etc section. My version of Kroger has this which is kind of the Hamburger Helper brand of curry blocks but it's still pretty tasty.
We break the blocks and mix them with hamburger when we do tinfoil dinners when we're camping and stuff.
If you've got an Asian grocery store near you they will most likely carry hondashi, http://www.amazon.com/Ajinomoto-Dashi-Soup-Stock-5-28/dp/B0002YB40O and may have what you need to make dashi, kombu, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kombu, and katsuobushi, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Katsuobushi (it will come pre-shredded in a bag). Dashi is one of the easiest stocks to make, only takes about 30 minutes or so, http://japanesefood.about.com/od/soup/r/konbukatsudashi.htm
The Japanese do have teir own version of curry and it is delicious. I think they got it from the British so it's a re-interpretation of a re-interpretation. It's one of the most popular foods in Japan. It's usually made with pork, but if you're going to make it with katsu, make it vegetarian. You can buy a box of curry roux at most Asian grocery stores, http://www.amazon.com/Golden-Curry-Sauce-8-4oz-pack/dp/B0011UGYLM to use. Basically, take a pot, add a bit of oil (for Asian food I like peanut), cook some white onions in the oil, I also add some sliced garlic which is not traditional, add some potato and carrots (you may want to cook them half way first), add water, simmer for about 20 minutes, add the curry roux, stir it in the simmering water and it will break down, and then continue for 5 minutes or so. The curry roux will have instructions on the back of the box, it's super easy. This is the basic version but there are all sorts of variation, some put in grated apple or even coffee in it! It's my favorite thing to eat with katsu.
Most Japanese people use curry cubes S&B and Vermont curry are the two main brands. I prefer S&B, but both are good. "Hot" is not hot or spicy at all, Japanese food is generally not spicy and their idea of spicy is a lot less than ours.
The easiest way is to buy the roux blocks like this: https://www.amazon.com/Golden-Curry-Sauce-Mix-8-4-Ounce/dp/B0011UGYLM
Boil desired veg and meat and mix in blocks.

The other way is to make the roux yourself and use curry powder.

Nobody makes it 100% from scratch, at minimum they use the powder and thicken with roux or cornstarch.
If you want to try a premix of spice- Golden Curry Sauce mix works great in a slow cooker.
https://www.amazon.com/Golden-Curry-Sauce-Mix-8-4-Ounce/dp/B0011UGYLM?th=1
Link just for reference, you can find it at the supermarket probably cheaper.
Also don't forget to check out /r/slowcooking for great crockpot recipes.
I posted about Sodium Citrate a while ago and I love the bejeezus out of it. I'm glad you do, too!
It turns any cheese into a creamy, velvety, sauce when used. My favorite use so far is making Queso with Pepperjack cheese. I get mine from Amazon for around $15.00 USD. https://www.amazon.com/WillPowder-Sodium-Citrate-16-Ounce-Jar/dp/B00250Y9Y6
Also, an immersion blender will be your best friend when it comes to making not just cheese sauces, yet making pureed foods (hello, creamy and cheesy cauli-mash!), custards, whipped cream, gravy, - so many possibilities.
Also, for extra flavor: I add in Seitenbacher soup mix to some cheese and vegetable dishes. Amazon link is here: https://www.amazon.com/Seitenbacher-Vegetarian-Vegetable-Seasoning-5-Ounce/dp/B000FAPM2Q
It add a whole new dynamic to one's flavor palate. I use it to take the "green" taste out of vegetables I don't care for much like green beans. It's also vegetarian-friendly. I find it amazing addition to chicken. cream, and tomato-based dishes. I started off using it sparingly due to the strong taste but love the flavor. It's a little higher in salt, but balancing out one's potassium shouldn't be an issue.
As a Wisconsinite, beer cheese soup is a must around here and this helps mimic the flavor due to having some yeast extract. I usually slip in some Hacker-Pschorr Oktoberfest Märzen, New Glarus Spotted Cow, or a Guinness if my macros are low for the day. :D
Yeah, I've never seen it in a store. I got it on Amazon
Lots of good answers so far but check this out: Sodium Citrate is now known to be an excellent emulsifying aid for cheese based sauces. Here's a similar recipe. Stirring in about a teaspoon or so before you add the fromage should go a long way towards keeping your sauce properly emulsified.
Want to melt your own cheese instead of using canned stuff? You need Sodium Citrate. This lets you get the smooth melty texture without using a roux.

Start with rice: $24 for 25 days worth of food @ 1600 kCal a day. Add in dried beans - high fiber and quite tasty, for about $2 per pound.. Add frozen vegetables from your local store - and in NYC, that's not difficult at all, thanks to awesome public transportation - and you're eating healthy on way less than $40 per week.
This is cheaper and has more than double the calories.
Arcors Strawberry Buds.
Here ya go pal.
What are those strawberry ones called?
EDIT: Never mind, it was posted later in the comments: http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B004QLOFN2/ref=redir_mdp_mobile?redirect=true&ref_=pd_lpo_sbs_dp_ss_2
Which makes this pretty funny
While saving it for something you really want/need is probably for the best, I'm going to link you to this thread here: best boardgames on Amazon for under $15.
Something else that is pretty cool: Miracle Berries. It turns sour/bitter tastes into sweet! A lemon will taste like sugar, sour strawberries will taste like heaven, and so on.

You just used too much probably, a little goes a long way and if you overdo it you get the sourness.edit: misreadIt's a night and day difference over bechamel or a Kraft packet imo.
Well, cost for one reason:
http://www.amazon.com/Saf-Instant-Yeast-Pound-Pouch/dp/B0001CXUHW
But when you think of the cost of a packet of even dry yeast split over an entire batch (or multiple if you re-use), yeast is a relatively small slice of the total cost.
In the link to the original recipe there is a reference to https://www.amazon.com/Saf-Instant-Yeast-Pound-Pouch/dp/B0001CXUHW
Buy a scale - use it for most measuring, especially flour.
Buy 2 thermometers - one to leave in the oven and one instant read for testing done-ness.
Use Instant yeast.
Besides that - read alot about baking then practice and experiment. Try adjusting the water/flour amounts and see what works best for you.
Baking is an art... but it helps if you also know the science.
Hey all,
Made my first pie this weekend. Per /u/jaaypeee very simple recipe seen below. Not the prettiest pizza, but it tasted great! I'm glad it came out a little Frankenstein-ish because it leaves plenty of room for improvements! Next time I'm making a sauce, hit me up with any simple recommendations!
I bought this flour and yeast. Baked at 550F in a cast iron that I sealed with bacon grease the night before. I couldn't believe nothing stuck! It was an AWESOME experience and I already ordered a baking steel and plan to make more pies at my girlfriend's parents place this coming weekend. A special thanks to /u/jaaypeee for the post and tips!
>I used the 48-72 Hour NY Pizza Dough recipe from the book The Elements of Pizza by Ken Forkish. This was the second time using a baking steel. I heated the oven to 550 degrees fahrenheit and let the steel come to temp for about 45 mins. The pizzas took 5-6 mins to bake.
Ingredients
Method
Thanks! It was delicious. I used Caputo "00" Chefs Flour (red bag) and Saf Instant Yeast
Ken Forkish suggests Saf Instant Yeast, this is the one I ordered from Amazon.
Spicy tuna with cucumbers
1 large cucumber
4 oz raw sashimi grade tuna
1 tbsp Sriracha
1 tbsp ponzu sauce
1 tsp sesame oil
Furikake to taste
Peel, de-seed and chop the cucumber. Pour ponzu over cucumbers. Mash up the tuna with the Sriracha and sesame oil. Serve on top of cucumbers, top with Furikake. So delicious.

YOU FUCKIN KNOW IT!
GRILLED CHEESE AND SPAM MUSUBI PARTY!
Edit: Question: Do you use furikake on your musubi, and if so which flavor? My default is nori komi, but I have a bottle of the wasabi flavor and it's really tasty so I want to try it on the next batch of musubi I make. I haven't used any other flavors before and I'm curious as to how they hold up.
[Furikake] (https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0006G5KEY/ref=cm_sw_r_other_awd_KOQBwbCYD7GN3)
My ex-wife was from Hawaii and made them all the time for me. I stole the recipe before I left her. (GOTEM) Anyways, her recipe was as the same except a few differences.
Exchange teriyaki sauce with soy sauce & sugar. Heat the soy sauce and then add sugar to the desired level. Cook the spam slices in the soy/sugar mixture.
Additionally add Furikake seasoning to the rice cakes or to the rice bowl as desired. See: "https://www.amazon.com/JFC-Nori-Furikake-Seasoning-Ounce/dp/B0006G5KEY"
A good trick to form the musubi is to cut out the bottom of the spam container and use that to shape the cakes
Try furikake! It's a dried seasoning that you sprinkle on cooked rice. There are lots of different varieties but here's an example
This is in my crockpot right now and I'm eating it over either broccoli or green beans with a half cup of rice. The sauce combines well with everything.
Here's a good spicy rub:
http://allrecipes.com/recipe/14537/spicy-chicken-breasts/
This is delicious and I only account for about a tablespoon of the marinade in my cals since there's always tons leftover:
http://allrecipes.com/recipe/30522/unbelievable-chicken/
For green beans, try sautéing with garlic and some Sambal chili paste. So good.
I've also seen some recipes where you use a 35 cal laughing cow wedge to make a cheese sauce for broccoli.
Sambal. Same company, basically the same sauce, but no sugar. Sambal + sugar + puree = Sriracha
http://www.amazon.com/Sambal-Oelek-Chilli-Paste-18oz/dp/B000JMDHCC
Sure. I tend not to use American style hot sauces (like Tabasco) in stir fry, but that's mainly because I don't like the vinegary notes. I tend to go for either a basic chili garlic sauce or more frequently sambal olek which is similar but hotter. But you should use whichever you prefer.
If you're looking for something lazy and cheap you can just mix pretty much any BBQ sauce with Sambal Oelek
Do you have a bbq?
Throw just plain wings on the grill.
No butter or oil.
Crank it to around 425°f and turn wings often so they don’t burn.
Take off when they get browned and crispy.
Toss in a bowl with bit of salt.
-1/4 cup ranch
-1/4 cup Sambal
-1 tbsp melted butter.
Toss with wings.
Best ever.
If you buy gochujang (middle one), you shouldn't have to buy cho-gochujang as well. Gochujang is the main ingredient in cho-gochujang and can be made easily.
I, personally, don't find gochujang to be very spicy at all. If you just want spicy, try adding pepper powders, fresh peppers, hot oils, and hot sauces.
Jalapeños, (I buy diced and just add to dishes that way)

Indonesian Chili Paste
Really depends on the food. Ramen gets Dave's Insanity Sauce (but just a drop! AND peanut butter, btw - so good), other Asian stuff gets Sambal Oelek, barbecue gets Dinosaur BBQ Devil's Duel, Tex-Mex gets Mountain Man, and so on.
I don't really have one "be all end all" sauce. It's all about letting the food pick the sauce.

Kinder Hippos! Glorious, delicious, German hippos. I found them once at the store then never again. :'(
edit: thank goodness for amazon! :D
College will do that to you! The first time I tried it, I attended 1/2 of every year and spent the other 1/2 working to save money to go back to classes.
Funny story about college:
I shared a two bedroom apartment with 3 roommates, plus me. One summer, we had another girl all to move in for a month. So, we added a third twin bed in the master bedroom. five of us in apartment built for four was pretty good, until the nightly sleepovers began and we regularly had 9 people in our little place. Anyway, five of us really liked to burn things. We always had a fire going or some candles or random incense.
One night, I told my roommates about a Mexican place I had gone to for dinner and they burned a fresh tortilla chip as the candle in a dessert. It smelled heavenly. So, we decided to try burning random stuff to see how it smells. All was well until a guest tried burning a strand of her hair... the apartment smelled for days 😝
Bonus story: the same summer three of my roommates and I went to the beach. We had a brilliant idea to swim out to the mile buoy. The swim was fun, the water was gorgeous out there, and it was so peaceful. The swim back to shore was the most terrifying two hours of my life. I didn't think we would ever make it back.

Seriously - the Lowery's microwavable pork rinds are fucking amazing.
That said, never EVER burn them. If you do, take them outside immediately or your surroundings may never smell the same again. Also, I'm not 100% sure they are gluten free, but gluten light at least
They may go stale fairly fast. I buy these and love them.
You really should try the microwave pork rinds - they are a completely different animal than the bagged ones (which I also like). I get them by the box full from Amazon, but I've also seen them at some local grocery and discount stores. They are usually by the microwave popcorn.

Buy yourself some on Amazon.
I've been meaning to try these but haven't gotten around to it yet..
Have you tried getting pastes for the sauces? I really enjoy this one. I normally get it at Wegman's, but it looks like this is a good price from also. It tastes similar to the butter chicken I get at my favorite Indian restaurant if I add a little extra butter or cream.
I know it's not exactly Indian cooking when you use a paste, but it's a way to start an fill your cravings for a littler cheaper. You could try this on a day when you're working on your naan skills.
I get this spice mix from Amazon: Kitchens of India Paste for Butter Chicken Curry, 3.5-Ounce Boxes (Pack of 6) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B000V17MLS/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_EujDAbMZCPKT0
I like it a lot, I also add potatoes and cauliflower sometimes for variety and it turned out well.
If I'm having a bad craving for biryani I'll get the Saffron Road biryani from the frozen food aisle. I have seen it at Target, at some organic food stores etc. They nailed the smell, the spice is on the lighter side but it will satiate my craving.
Just a warning: The Kitchens of India stuff recently changed their recipe (and the packaging is now blue). It's now a good bit higher in carbs -- from 3g/serving to 7g/serving.
Amazon link for the new stuff
I made a Thai red curry sausage once with ground pork and rice, it tasted great and had a really nice spice to it. Might want to try Kitchens of India butter chicken, it's more of a paste than a pre-made sauce, lets you control the liquid in the recipe. I intend to make another curry sausage soon, going to do some protein with yellow curry with coconut cream and rice.
If you want to try Japanese curry, there's lots of premade curry cubes you can buy and thin out with water that are actually really good!
This one (https://www.amazon.com/Golden-Curry-Sauce-Mix-8-4-Ounce/dp/B0011UGYLM) is supposed to be good. I have different ones here in Taiwan. Just check the heat and match it to your preference.
Always good. If you like this type of meal, I recommend trying Japanese’s curry. It’s fucking delicious and you can make it at home easy. S&B Golden Curry Sauce Mix, Hot, 8.4-Ounce https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0011UGYLM/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_2MG7BbWNPWSRK
Don't see a lot of Asian representation yet, so here are some of my go-to lazy dinners. Basically the "Hamburger Helper" type recipes for our Asian household.
Char Siu Chicken Wings:
1 packet Char Siu Seasoning Mix
1-2 lb chicken wings
Dump the mix on the wings and mix and make sure to NOT add water. Mix and cover the wings thoroughly. Leave it in the fridge for at least 4 hours. Bake at 400 for 45min on a rack. Broil for extra crispiness at the end if you like.
Bonus photo of the finished product, I like mine broiled a bit extra for that char flavor. Side of roasted brussel sprouts + rice.
---
Lazy Korean BBQ Chicken
1-2 lb boneless chicken thigh meat cut to 2-3 inch strips
Jar of Korean Chicken & Pork Marinade
Essentially the same instructions as the wings. Dump the marinade on the thigh meat and leave in the fridge for at least 3-4 hours. Bake at 400 for 45min on a rack, finish with a broil if you like. Great with a side of kim chi & rice.
---
Slow Cooker Japanese Curry
1 box Japanese Curry Sauce Mix
2-3 lb meat of choice (chunked for stew)
2 yellow onions, chopped
2 carrots, chopped
2 potatoes, large chunks
~6 cups water (however much you need to just cover the ingredients in the slow cooker)
Sear the meat first if you like. Dump all the ingredients into the slow cooker. Cook on low for about 8 hours. Serve over rice. Note that you could also prepare the curry sauce mix on the stovetop as per the instructions on the back of the box. I just normally go for the slow cooker method when I want to set it and forget it.
Japanese curry is INCREDIBLY easy to make. You really can’t mess it up. You can buy brands like Golden Curry at most major retailers. Just a fair warning the spice levels are very mild across the board on most Japanese curry so if you like spicy food be prepared to add your own spices. All you are doing though is chopping some veggies and meat if you like and throwing it in a pot, done and done. Delicious meal that you can pack into the fridge and have for a couple nights :)
If you can get your hands on Japanese curry cubes (Amazon sells it too but at a high markup https://www.amazon.com/Golden-Curry-Sauce-Mix-8-4-Ounce/dp/B0011UGYLM ,) this particular type of curry goes really nicely with apples!
Saute onions with butter in a pot, add potato and carrot chunks (optional) along with cubed apples, then add water and let it simmer for half an hour before adding the curry. Let it cool for another 10 minutes, then eat with rice and broccoli!
Sodium Citrate
Magnesium Citrate
Potassium Citrate
am pretty sure any decent vitamin shop (not GNC) will have most if not all of this.
No idea how it would work, but based on someone's post here last night I've read a bit about Sodium Citrate being used in mac & cheese. Seems like if you were melting your own cheeses instead of Velveeta, you'd want to add that to keep the fats from separating.
Amazon
I'm guessing the grainy texture comes from the fats separating when you melt the cheese. If you want to improve the texture of this sauce I would try adding some Sodium Citrate. Sodium Citrate is a salt that will help maintain your emulsion when making a cheese sauce.
It's been a while since I've remembered to take photos of my pizzas, but I'm back! Here are albums from a few prior pizza gatherings:

Well, just through a cursory Google search, it seems the suggestion is 1c rice : 2c water for Jasmine. However, I never use it so I can't say for certain. Maybe try increasing your water?
Here's the rice I use: rice. I always use a 1:1 ratio, and it comes out perfectly anywhere down to 1 cup. Hope some of this helps!
I have to agree w/everyone on the whole Apartment being out of your budget...but you didn't ask for that advice, so I'll try to help you out as best I can.
The way I like to help is by giving you one tool. Hardest thing about eating on a budget is you often eat the same thing, so a little variety is nice. I would suggest eating this one week, and finding other recipes next week, then coming back to this when you feel it. It won't be the cheapest, but it will taste solid and fill your belly (and more importantly be in your budget).
Key is to buy in bulk.
Same thing with the beans.
Also learn HOW to debone a chicken . Now you can buy the whole chicken and give me more options.
-----
Ok now, just gotta cook. Cook the rice and beans together. While that's cooking, cook the meat. For Chicken Breasts, depending on the thickness, I suggest cooking it 5 mins each side and then letting it sit for about 3 mins after you are done. I then cook any produce I have, then add the rice and meat. I then push all the food to the sides of the pan put some oil in the middle and drop my egg (sometimes i drop 2 if im hungry). I personally break the egg and after about 1-2 mins i then mix everything together. I add my spices. Put in soy sauce, or a bit of ketchup, or hot sauce if I have it (Cheap tip: take a lot of condiments from fastfood joints, hahaha).
Cost (Per/Month) assuming you eat this the entire month
Total: $86
I hope this helps a bit. I think the best thing is to learn how to cook. Utilize reddit, youtube, etc to find cheap foods that are semi-healthy and are within your budget. You don't have financial capital, but you do have your own labor and skills that you can grow to compensate for your current lack of $$$. I personally ended up loving cooking cause I went through the same thing, had no money in college and lived off Ramen, Rice, Chicken, and Beans. Slowly I learned how to cook and now although I spend a lot more on food I feel I can cook a great meal on whatever budget im on.
Ok...I have a feeling this will make you laugh!

Re:cost of living; currencies are either "strong" or "weak": in countries with weak currencies, cheap things necessary to live (food, place to live, etc.) tend to be a lot cheaper, while everything else (education, beds, real home, technology, etc.) is a lot more expensive. Strong currencies are the opposite.
Most African currencies (South Africa and Egypt are the notable exceptions) are very weak, meaning that basic living (eating) is very cheap, but everything else (including clean water and health care) is much more expensive.
On top of that, variety is practically nonexistent. Eating beans and rice (which is minimally healthy, but sufficient) is very cheap: pinto beans are .04 cents/calorie, and rice is .07 cents/calorie; and that's off Amazon, not generic product from a bulk wholesaler. Eating 3000 calories/day of beans and rice (1500 calories each) would cost $1.60/day of food.
Actually rice and beans is significantly cheaper than instant ramen.
A 12 pack of top ramen costs about $9. That's about $0.75 per meal.
These beans cost $15 for 104 oz dry; a serving of beans is roughly 2 oz dry (you soak them and get about 4 oz), so that's about $0.07 per meal's worth of beans.
This rice costs $26 for 240 oz dry. One serving of rice is about 3 oz dry, so that's about $0.32 per meal's worth of rice.
Even just eating rice and beans on their own is significantly more satisfying than instant ramen, I've found. So that's about 1/2 the cost for a better meal.
And in fact, if you're not a complete idiot and just go to the store and buy your supplies, you'll probably pay a lot less.
The downside, of course, is you need to know how to cook and you need to have enough free time to actually do it - without a crock pot, beans can be a giant pain in the ass, and without a rice cooker rice can be similarly frustrating.
Wash the rice 3 times, you don't have to wash it until it's crystal clear just get most of the starch out. Make sure you drain all the water out before it goes into the pan with the added water. Then bring to just barely a rolling boil and drop the heat to low and cover. Cook for 20min, the second the timer goes off move your pan off the burner and let sit for 10min covered. I don't use a rag I just use the lid and the lid stays closed from the moment you put it on to the end of your ten min timer. I like to put foil or plastic over a sheet pan and spread my rice out on that. Using a rice paddle and cutting motions mix in about 3tbsp of seasoned rice vinegar. It's kinda hard to get used to at first but you need a fan or a stiff plastic lid and start fanning the rice with one hand while cutting and mixing the rice with the other. Continue this until the rice is basically about the same temp as your skin. I also recommend covering the rice with a damp paper towel while you're making sushi so it doesn't dry out. Hope this helps.
This is the Sushi rice that I use, it's a pretty good deal. 20$ for 15lbs.
I'm Chinese and have been eating rice pretty much since I was born. We've ordered online before, from Walmart and amazon, but usually get a huge bag at the Asian market that lasts a couple of months. I've yet to find a single bug/worm/creepy crawly in any of the rice I've purchased.
https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B004NRLAVY?psc=1&ref=yo_pop_mb_pd&th=1 this is a pretty good deal on amazon. I prefer rice from Thailand (the texture is similar to sushi rice) but the prices are ridic on amazon.
I'd skip Walmart though. 3 out of the 4 times we've ordered from them, the bags arrived damaged and we had to reorder. Also, the brands they carry are meh. But I'm Asian so we tend to be picky with our rice.
Amazon!
I think they just have a bunch of old people hanging from their ankles to collect these as they fall from their pockets.

Works great with strawberries, lemons, and just about anything else you could imagine.
Miracle fruit? It's a fun experimental present. When you eat (dissolve on tongue) a miracle fruit tablet all sour food turns to sweet. Gives you a new experience in eating a lot of stuff and is also a bit sciency.
Turns everything sour into sweet. You can eat lemons straight and it tastes like lemonade http://www.amazon.com/Miracle-Fruit-World-350mg-Tablet/dp/B004SOMH3M/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1345426646&sr=8-1&keywords=magic+berries
Miracle Frooties. I haven't tried them, but they seem cool. Also, Gallium.
The food is actually edible, and can be bought here. It's made of six kinds of powder, takes about an hour to put together, and tastes disturbingly like/unlike what it looks like.

OP, I suggest getting a large Tupperware box, filling it with these, (read the reviews) and labeling the top with "OP's sweets, do not use" or words to that effect.
Then simply sit back and watch the fireworks. If that's not aggressive, I don't know what is.

I just bought some, I thought they were America-exclusive, but guess not (and I just found them right now thanks to this post)
Here you go
So many good things here :D
I had: biscuits and gravy, eggs on hash browns for breakfast, half of the quesarito, a Moolatte from DQ, some Cheez-its (Grooves White Cheddar, they are really good), some Peanut Butter Chocolate fudge, Chinese Buffet (that was terrible), Sun Chips, 2 pieces of pepperoni pizza, some Panera Mac and Cheese that they sell at Costco now, a vanilla cupcake, a bowl of Lucky Charms with tons of marshmallows, and a fresh baked croissant with jam. :)

They're not the exact brand, but apparently they're pretty darn close to the original Lucky Charms!
If they are sugar free than who needs fiber?
Only 6 in stock, get on it!
Sounds to me like you need some sodium citrate in your life.

What exactly do you mean by 'healthy?'
Is it about calorie reduction or getting more nutrients? Or both?
A very simple, tasty one is roasted cauliflower. Cauliflower really benefits from browning. Preferably roasting. Just wash and dry it (thoroughly), cut into equally sized pieces, whether it be bite size or "steaks," toss in olive oil, salt & pepper (and garlic if you want), spread evenly on a roasting pan, but don't crowd it too much, and roast in the oven on the middle rack or higher at about 425-450F until brown... even nearly black in a few places. It's so simple and delicious.
It makes a great soup too, just blend it with either veg or chicken stock and either some fresh parsley or thyme.
Another veg that does well with char is broccoli. Steam, blanch (heavily salt your blanching or steaming liquid) or microwave (if you must) the cut broccoli stalks until about half done, drain and dry. Toss in olive oil, salt, minced garlic and chili flakes and grill on very high heat or broil until slightly charred. You won't believe how good it is.
Some great books for veg dishes are:
Plenty by Yotam Ottolenghi
Tender by Nigel Slater (this one has a great chocolate beet cake)
The Art Of Simple Food II by Alice Waters (So many simple, classic veg preparations in this one.)

Regarding Mac & Cheese, here is page from Modernist Cuisine at Home:
http://i.imgur.com/E4dd4lQ.jpg
It involves using Sodium Citrate. Calm down! Don't be afraid. It's a type of salt derived from citrus fruits. If you like to cook with cheese this stuff will be your best friend. The only issue is you don't need very much of it, so you will need an accurate scale that can handle very small weights, but they're not that expensive and it'll pay for itself quickly in the amount you'll likely save in cheese costs, because.....
What it does is it helps emulsify the fats and solids of cheese when it melts and it can be used with just about every type of cheese that can melt, so that means you can use it to emulsify multiple types of cheeses at the same time. Why this matters for you? If you're trying to reduce calories you can mix your favorite cheeses with some lower calorie cheeses (like drained cottage cheese) and still end up with a really creamy sauce without having to add cream or butter. This stuff doesn't make Pasta & Cheese "healthy" but it does help you reduce the caloric value of a cheese dish without sacrificing texture... in fact it improves it.

I use this brand, which I got at Amazon, but if you search for sodium citrate at Amazon there's lots of other brands. I bought it about a year ago and still have some left.
Here's Modernist Cuisine's melty queso dip, using sodium citrate, and here's their macaroni and cheese. I've made the mac and cheese before using cauliflower as a substitute for noodles, it's pretty good!

Just in case you wanted to make your morning even better!
Sodium citrate is an emulsifier. I got mine at Amazon.com.
An emulsifier is a agent that can bond two different substances that normally wouldn't bond like oil and water. In this case it bonds cheese and water. People often think it help things melt. That isn't really accurate. In this case it turn cheese and water (or beer or cider or white wine) into a cheese sauce by bonding cheese and water molecules together. Eggs are another emulsifier.

Pretty sure it was these gummies
Just through Amazon, specifically here. At 11g/batch, 400g will last me a while! Watch out for the 2oz packages, they're $5/oz rather than the linked product that's $1/oz!
Get this stuff. It is dirt cheap and will last you forever. And it is quality
Also you can make a culture any time its super simple. I have done it before. I am actually starting one up right now. I go through sourdough phases so I don't feel the need to keep it always.
The fridge temperature is below 40, about 37 on the shelf where I keep the dough.
I double the recipe to make 3 balls, but for the yeast I'm actually using less than the recipe says. So instead of 2*0,91tsp I use just 1 tsp. I can try putting even less yeast? This is the yeast I'm using Saf Instant Yeast, 1 Pound Pouch https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0001CXUHW?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share
Same place that I get most things...Amazon!
This is really great yeast that I store in the freezer: Saf Instant Yeast, 1 Pound Pouch
Here's the DM I bought:

And this is the yeast I have been using:
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B004136MDG
That's what I'm calling "active yeast". I was under the impression that instant yeast (like the one I'll link below" shouldn't be used with pizza.

What's your macros? You'll feel better by eating against your macros rather than just calories. Macros are simply a math formula (protein + carbs + fats = calories). Most people under-eat for their protein requirements & over-eat per their carb requirements, which makes a weight-loss program difficult because you won't have as much energy or feel as full as you would if you were to eating according to your individual macro numbers instead.
Have you tried Soylent (it's a meal replacement, not just a protein shake) yet? The blend-it-yourself chocolate powder is $1.83 per serving (400 calories with 20 grams of protein).
Do you like to cook, or are you willing to meal-prep? Making your own pasta is pretty fun (and easy!). You can create a huge variety of noodles with that base recipe, including stuffed raviolis. Homemade bread is also awesome. I primarily do no-knead bread (loaves, rolls, etc.) & bread-machine bread. Costco sells 25-pound sacks of flour for like $13. Depending on supply costs in your area, a typical loaf runs maybe 50 cents or so. I buy my yeast in bulk (I keep it in the freezer, to extend the shelf-life) & also make sourdough starter.
you might try a local bakery if you're looking for fresh yeast; I and many others use instant yeast, which lasts a very long time in the
fridgefreezer and works great; a pound (which is a lot) can be had on Amazon for about $8 (https://smile.amazon.com/Saf-Instant-Yeast-Pound-Pouch/dp/B0001CXUHW?sa-no-redirect=1)Yep. I didn't have a starter to work with unfortunately. Used this stuff http://www.amazon.com/Saf-Instant-Yeast-Pound-Pouch/dp/B0001CXUHW
SAF Instant Yeast. I got it off amazon. Now that I’m using it I’m never going back to other yeast.
Here’s a link
This brand of yeast stores for well over a year in the freezer. It;s available at most major grocery chains as well.
https://www.amazon.com/Saf-Instant-Yeast-Pound-Pouch/dp/B0001CXUHW
I highly recommend using instant yeast. You don't have to proof it first; just add it in with the dry ingredients. It will keep forever in the freezer; store it in a jar, and just scoop it straight from there.
Do you use Saf Yeast or do you have your own culture?
Furikake!
Sprinkle over rice, it's super tasty and low cal. Growing up, my mom used to make rice, dump on a bunch of furikake (usually adding some dried, flavored seaweed as well) and sprinkle some hot water or green tea over top to mix it up and make the seasoning spread out more. Also gives it more of a porridge texture. You can skip the water/tea if you want though.
wow this is great! a vegetarian ex girlfriend of mine introduced "furikake" to me and i have been looking for nori komi ever since (without knowing it under that name).
so tonight i found this! http://www.amazon.com/JFC-Nori-Komi-Furikake-Seasoning/dp/B0006G5KEY
Sounds tasty!
I got a hold of these asian rice seasoning spices http://www.amazon.com/JFC-Nori-Fumi-Furikake-Seasoning/dp/B0006G5KEY
They are pretty good
I love that 'rice seasoning' they sell at the asian supermarket. My favorite is the seaweed one, I don't like the salmon one too much.
I'll upload a pic in a sec, so OP can see what I'm talking about. I'll eat just rice with that stuff, it's great.
Edit: here it is
Alternatively you can just buy seaweed sheets and canned tuna, and mix it all up.
There is really nothing special here every sushi place does a generic Ahi tower of sorts... Siracha goes in the tuna to the correct color, regular mayo goes into the imitation crab meat(broken into strands) to the correct consistency and desired flavor then just go buy yourself a piece of PVC pipe cut to the desired size and width or you can cut the bottom off of a Styrofoam cup to use as a form. Now just layer into your form the rice on bottom, sprinkle with togarashi , avocado, tuna, and then crab. Dress the plate with eel sauce and wasabi mayo(wasabi powder, lime juice, half mayo and half Japanese mayo) all ingredients will be to taste, consistency, and color; trust your pallet. Lastly plate the form and gently remove the form to reveal the tower. Dress with a sprinkle of black and white sesame mixed and micro greens. That's it. All laid out. If you're going to be doing this with salmon I would recommend first making the salmon into a sort of spicy poke(pronounced pohkay) with sesame and soy(maggi is best)and then follow the plating as usual.
edit: I just saw the orange spicy mayo, that one is siracha, a sprinkle of tagarashi, Korean chili paste, and the garlic chili sauce made by the company that makes cock sauce but it is NOT cock sauce. Mix with half Japanese mayo and half regular. All ingredients again are to YOUR taste and pallet as I have not eaten this dish at that particular restraunt. There is also a spice mix that I missed that goes between the rice and avocado layer that consists of nori, sesame and other spices that I forget... Anyone know what that stuff is called?
edit: found it. This stuff. http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B0006G5KEY
Is it this?
obviously
I do, I like the whole range of normal hot sauces. When you start getting into the really painful stuff I'm not really into it, but a drop or two of Dave's Insanity Sauce can really improve a dish of mediocre mild salsa. At that rate the jar I bought on a whim will last a few decades. Eating Thai food I'll ask for a heat level of 2-3/4 out of 3, if that makes sense. 70% of my heat additions as an ingredient or condiment come from Sambal Oelek, I'll put it in everything from eggs to salad dressing. I'll use dried Thai chili flakes for other recipes like tacos or Lentil Dal. I keep Sriracha around, but it basically only goes on leftover pizza and a bottle will last me forever. My fiancee hates it, so I never include it as an ingredient. I will use a good amount in Pho though. Unfortunately for me, Tabasco is the most commonly available hot sauce, and I have a moderate dislike of the stuff. I'll eat it when the food is so boring it needs some heat added, but I'll pick pretty much any hot sauce in existence over it.
However, unlike my father, I can some times be perfectly content to eat foods with subtle flavors. He basically writes them off as bland, and then dumps a huge pile of any available hot sauce onto it.
Red Rooster if you want some delicious Cajun vinegary hot sauce which goes amazing on pizza too
Sambal Oelek if you feelin for some Asian inspired hot sauce
Kung Pao Chicken http://www.myrecipes.com/recipe/kung-pao-chicken-50400000108350/
The recipe is written a little confusingly. but you can sub other vegetables, like green pepper and peas. I also sub This for the crushed red pepper and chicken breast for thigh. Also good soy sauce really makes a difference.
Edit the recipe really is hard to read so i will write it out since I am bored.
Ingredients
2 tablespoons dark sesame oil
1 cup chopped onion
2 garlic cloves, minced
1 pound skinless, boneless chicken thighs, cut into 1-inch pieces
Sauce ingredients

3 tablespoons lower-sodium soy sauce
2 teaspoons cornstarch
1 teaspoon brown sugar
1/2 teaspoon Fresh minced ginger

My random user is /u/sweetbeauty
I had TONS of things in common with my match. She likes lisa frank and I like lisa frank. She likes adorable necklaces and so do it! She likes kinder hippos and I love those damn things!! They are on one of my wishlists. She wants this and I bought that exact same set on 01/30 of this year. She likes Rachael Ray and that is my favorite cookware set. I have her plates in green! She likes colorful knives, guess who bought that set back in March? She has contacts and I have contacts! I just added that to my wish list too. She likes makeup and I love makeup. Those brushes are amazing, btw. She also had quite a few makeup items that I liked, but I wasn't about to link all those. Ditto with books!! My random person is pretty awesome.
Also, welcome!!

Hippos
Genius. Next time you don't have the time or patience to assemble, find some of these bastards.
I found some at a local little Russian grocery here in my town but I'm sure they're available in places like Cost Plus and the like.

they're dangerous, i've eaten very unhealthy amounts in one sitting.
Kinder Happy Hippos are my favorite chocolate bar. Don't let them fool you into saving them with their cuteness--they taste delicious.
This would make my day...because CHOCOLATE!! The dog ate my homework
My goal right now, to get promoted at work, be a better manager than the one I would be replacing, and find some one better than myself to take over my department. Right now, as far as that goal goes, I've had the interview for the job, and I find out next week if I got it or not. Finding someone to replace me, it's hard, not cause I'm irreplaceable or anything(even though I like to think of myself as such), but there are not many people wanting to work these days. Or of they do, it's to support their drug habit and they can't pass a drug test. Ugh, it's frustrating.
My number is 123
And I've wanted to try [these](

Thanks so much for the contest! I'm sending you a virtual smile=) also, you're amazing!
Microwave Pork Rinds
Can't believe these were never posted here...
They come in Hot & Spicy too.
Lowrey's Bacon Curls Microwave Pork... https://www.amazon.com/dp/B000UP8QQ0?ref=yo_pop_ma_swf
Please tell me you got Lowrey’s Microwavable Spicy Pork Curls! They’re THEE best. But, FYI, like 1-in-8 bags will just burn and not pop at all. Still worth fresh pork rinds!
Hot & Spicy Pork Rinds
I don't mind pork rinds myself, but I can see why some people (like my husband) don't like the taste of the typical brands like Bakenets and Mission. I recently tried the Lowreys brand ones that you pop yourself in the microwave thanks to recs from this subreddit, and I agree that they taste a lot better! They actually taste a bit popcorn-y imo! Husband approved as well :) maybe try these? Lowrey's Bacon Curls Microwave Pork Rinds (Chicharrones), Hot & Spicy, 1.75 Ounce (Pack of 18) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B000UP8QQ0/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_uVL9Ab1AA2GQC
Its kind of cheating but the best butter chicken I've been able to make comes from a packet. Using [this] (https://www.amazon.com/Kitchens-India-Butter-Chicken-3-5-Ounce/dp/B000V17MLS?th=1) with some boneless thighs is fantastic and super easy.
As for rice I just throw jasmine rice in my rice cooker. While neither the curry or rice are authentic they taste good.
I realize that this is not made in a slowcooker, but if you don't have the ingredients to make this (I don't), this is a very good alternative:
Butter Chicken Curry
In my experience, these are the cheapest good foods I can get:
Protein: eggs, chicken
Fats: eggs, nuts, peanut butter
Carbs: rice, beans, potatoes, oatmeal, bananas
Sprinkle in some vegetables here and there where appropriate and you're on point. Also, make sure you check grocer specials and stock up on things you KNOW you're going to go through when they're on sale. I go through a lot of curry paste. I leave the butter out because I don't like cancer.
My husband and I have the same problem, and our go-to lazy meal is Butter Chicken. Our local Kroger sells a pre-made curry paste that we love (Kitchens of India, Butter Chicken Curry), and we eat that like most families eat spaghetti. Dice up some chicken, add whatever veggies you like, and make some rice and/or naan on the side. We also add a bit of ghost pepper because we like it really spicy, but our weak friends think it's very flavorful without no additional spices (except salt/pepper while the chicken is browning).
I also really enjoy fish as an easy, relatively healthy meal. Tilapia filets take no time to thaw in tepid water, so I just keep some in the freezer for easy, spur-of-the-moment dinners if I can't think of anything else. I season the fish with salt & pepper and either blackening spice or harissa seasoning (our local spice market sells a pre-made blend of dried spices that is my favorite thing ever). I usually nuke some frozen vegetables and make either rice or couscous on the side and add the same spices to the sides that I put on the fish. I usually make an extra meal to re-heat (in my HOME microwave) for lunch the next day.
I used THIS paste (it's crazy good), and added potatoes, carrots, onions, peas, and bamboo shoots. I use coconut cream instead of the water the recipe calls for.
Cube up and cook in sauces. I love honey garlic soy chicken over rice, and you can find recipes that do it without the breading which is a giant pita for that many little pieces of chicken, but so much better with it.
I'll probably catch shit for not making my own sauce but this is so so so much easier and is just what I'm wanting for easy butter chicken https://www.amazon.com/Kitchens-India-Butter-Chicken-3-5-Ounces/dp/B000V17MLS I'd make it more often if the smell didn't linger in my apartment for a couple days after making it.
I don't make it from scratch. Another user in this sub posted about the Kitchens of India brand pastes and I decided to try them out. http://www.amazon.com/Kitchens-India-Butter-Chicken-3-5-Ounce/dp/B000V17MLS
It does have a tiny bit of sugar, but not enough to where I feel any cravings after eating it. Also, one of the paste packets is said to be for 1 pound of chicken, but I've used more than 1 pound with one packet, which definitely helps reduce the grams of sugar per serving.
I know you asked for a recipe, but I swear this stuff is really good. And it's less than $3 USD per package w/ about 3-4 servings each.
http://www.amazon.com/Kitchens-India-Butter-Chicken-3-5-Ounce/dp/B000V17MLS/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1422721518&sr=8-1&keywords=butter+chicken
In case you'd like a slightly simpler preparation, I've found that I can make a very good butter chicken with this paste, a can of tomato sauce, some half and half and a little bit of sugar. It's cheap and it turns out great!
Not the healthiest, but I really like to make "butter chicken" with this spice packet. It calls for a lot of butter, but doensn't really need that much. I add cream to it at the end, but that's all depending on your tastes (I'm a wimp for spicy foods, and the cream cuts it). It's good with rice and cauliflower, all mixed together, and super easy to make.
S&B Golden Curry
It is a Japanese Curry Roux. They are very convenient if you want to make a Japanese curry.
Boil eggs until done. Chop into bits. Cook beef with salt & cumin. In a bowl, add the cooked eggs and beef, add more spice as needed. Chop parsley & add it to the bowl. Let the mix cool. Put the mixture into egg roll wraps and then fry in oil. You can keep these frozen and cook on other days.
Cut the eggplant into slices, fry in oil until done. Set on paper towels to absorb oil. In a pot, and put sliced tomatoes (I usually use four) in and cook with cumin & salt to taste. Add a can (small or regular sized, depends on your preference) of tomato sauce. Add sliced potatoes (I usually use four large red potatoes). Cover with lid and cook on low. In a pan, cook ground beef with cumin & salt. Add the beef to the potato mix, and then add the eggplant. Add more cumin/salt as needed. Cook on low for half an hour.

Its Japanese curry that comes in the form of solid bricks. Dump them in boiling water, throw in your ingredients, serve over rice: Boom, meals for days.
Heheheh. I've been making golden curry chili for over a decade. With thick cut-ups of browned hardwood smoked bacon and chunks of scrambled eggs mixed into the chili near the end (so the eggs don't get over-cooked). Makes for a great breakfast bowl.
If you want a formal recipe you can check out these guys.
Otherwise I'd recommend buying some thai curry paste, or Japanese curry blocks. You basically just add milk + tomato (or broth or water) and boom, you've got a sauce to simmer your veg in. This japanse stuff is at my grocer, and the thai stuff I get from amazon.
Also, you can save money if you use dried beans rather than the canned ones. You just gotta remember to throw them into water in the morning. Same thing with split peas, they cook super fast if you soak them in the morning.
Looks good! For next time, if you'd like to try a 'modern technique' for this type of thing, pick up some Sodium Citrate. Here's a video from Chow which shows what I'm talking about. I've done this a few times... My only complaint is that once it cools down it (obviously?) doesn't remain gooey and runny.
Additionally, /u/J_Kenji_Lopez-Alt put together a Burger Lab recipe for a similar cheese sauce that uses more traditional ingredients. (I haven't tried this one)
The folks at Modernist Cuisine discovered the sweetest of tricks, which is that the addition of sodium citrate to melted cheese stabilizes it and keeps it from re-hardening. This means that you can make a sauce or dip that has the consistency of alfredo or nacho cheese or Velveeta or cheese whiz, from any cheese including delicious high quality ones, and get a stable, creamy result that still maintains all the delicate nuance and strength of flavor of the good cheese you used to make it. You can also use a variant of this recipe to make American cheese style slices that melt easily but taste like, well, real, good cheese.
on Amazon:
sodium citrate, enough for a long time, $15 and free shipping
a digital scale that measures in hundredths of grams, $36.60, free shipping
immersion blender, $15.83 and free shipping.
This puts you at roughly $66. If you decide you want to throw a few more bucks into it, or he already has an immersion blender or something, get him some nice cheese to melt.
... If you wanted some non-food-related ideas, I love this product and have just been waiting for the right occasion to give this to someone.
Cheese sauce (water, cheese of choice and [sodium citrate] (http://www.amazon.com/WillPowder-Sodium-Citrate-16-Ounce-Jar/dp/B00250Y9Y6))
Frank's - we keep a gallon from Restaurant supply place in the house...it doesn't last long
Sriracha and mayo
Dijon and mayo
Roasted Poblano, heavy cream or crema pureed
Rao's marinara
I just put some of that G Hughes BBQ sauce in my Amazon cart (Thank you!) looking forward to dry rubbed, slow cooked and slathered ribs this weekend
Instead of large amounts of velveeta, I'll add to try using white american cheese in combination with some cream cheese and a good cheese. If using a lot of good cheese (like half or so, use sodium citrate to ensure you won't get an oily mess www.amazon.com/WillPowder-Sodium-Citrate-16-Ounce-Jar/dp/B00250Y9Y6

Oh snap! They are on Amazon! Here I thought I'd be deprived until I saved up for a trip to The Shire!
I’ve only ever found them online, I use Amazon. They’re expensive, but if you have a craving, it’s an option.

These little bastards fueled my high school years. The secretary would actually keep a stockpile of these in her desk specifically for me in the event that my blood sugars dropped low and I didn't have anything on me to eat. I had these all through my childhood, but they were most prevalent during those high school years. I graduated in 2005, and haven't had a single one since then. Frowny-face. That's why they're on my wish list: once I finally have some money to spare, I want to grab some and have some diabetic nostalgia time. :D
EDIT: Also, Tim Tam.
Everyone should have Tim Tams on their list.
They're just so tasty.
And I'd be interested in whatever you wanted to make me! I <3 handmade stuff so much.
I am also generally very crafty and this is such an awesome and giving contest. <3
I've managed to find them on Amazon but they're not cheap. (Same for various brands of Jaffas).

To prove it, I can't decide whether to link you this awesome set of cups because another wonderful person on here got me the DC comics set, so I need these to complete the collection, this shirt because it's hilarious and I would wear it over and over and over again, or this because... Waffle Crisp! (and I don't even want to know how you get away with selling used cereal?? lol) so I will link them all for you to enjoy and take your pick from. lol Thanks for the contest!!

This may solve your problems.
My stepfather's Old English Sheepdog once ate most of a giant novelty-sized Toblerone bar (including the cardboard box and foil wrapper) that my stepfather had bought at an airport duty-free shop. Fortunately, it was really, really milky chocolate.
He didn't take her (the dog) to the vet (we were poor), and she was off her rocker for about 12 hours. At one point she dug up the root ball of a banana tree and ate about half of that. Interestingly, this seemed to calm her down a bit.
TL;DR Chocolate might not kill your dog, but it can definitely make him/her crazy for a day.

I would guess about 1% of Calgarians will do so. I would peg my guess at 12,500 people. This would be further reduced by people without homes and who will not be giving out candy, so reduce that number by half.
So to answer your question, 6,250 people will be giving out full size candy bars this Halloween in Calgary.
I am not buying full size candy bars for kids this year. I am handing these out:
https://www.amazon.ca/Kraft-Toblerone-Jumbo-4-5-Kg/dp/B004INT01A/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1540834734&sr=8-1&keywords=toblerone+giant

Only 4.5 KG per bar, but that should make those kids happy.
Bigger then 750g I doubt it. Online yup theres a 4.5 Kg one.

Watch out for the beetus.
Thanks for all the suggestions guys! I couldn't find these at Walmart in California.
But Amazon has this (different product than speedonthis's)
1 cup is 8 fluid ounces.
1 fluid ounce of water weighs 1 ounce.
1 pound is 16 ounces.
Therefore a half-pound Reese's cup - by definition - must have the same density as water.
Then you'll hate this
ED HUNGRY
That cartoon was hilarious always made me laugh hmmm thinking saw these for Christmas look ED HUNGRY worthy lol CANDY CANDY SWEEEEET CANDY lol
We do have this but it's still only 2
A little steep if you ask me
I beg to differ
There are a variety of options. Some include:
Catalina Offshore Products
Honolulu Fish Market
Fish for Sushi
Great Alaska Seafood
Personally I'd vouch for the first two. Before living somewhere with a reputable fish market not far away, I'd used Catalina with some regularity. And I know several fish markets which source stuff from Honolulu Fish and it's been quite good.
With respect to rice - have you looked at your local supermarket? Even my local mid-tier supermarket carries both Lundberg Organic and Nishiki as well. Though I feel like how you cook your rice will make a huge difference.
This was what I used today, something similar for the first try. I don't recall how much I washed the first batch of rice, but I made sure to rinse the one today 4-5 times.
Spaghetti costs $0.50 for a box, sauce costs $0.65/can. Peanut butter and jelly sandwiches cost around $0.45 to make. Rice near me costs $11 for a 10lb bag, even on amazon you can find 15lbs for $22 ($1.47/lb). Make some rice and pour a $0.50 can of soup over it and you've got a meal. Or hell, black beans and rice with a little salt on it is delicious.
Just because you suck at shopping doesn't mean it can't be done.
Also, even if rice did cost $4/lb (which is stupid expensive), you can make almost 3 cups of rice from it, that's really close to 2k calories by itself.
>you're going to try and tell me you fed 4 people on $7 a day? did you grow/raise/catch/kill any of your own food? barter?
Cooking, baking, and buying in reasonable bulk. Rice, beans, pasta, frozen/canned vegetables, and a crockpot can do it. I'm not talking 500-pound bags of military surplus war beans or anything, just actually cooking them yourself. If you build a diet around cheap-to-obtain staples, the costs drop rapidly. For example:
So at about $150 you have about 6 months worth of base staples. And these are just random quick Amazon searches - most of these things can be found with more variety, healthier (depending on your dietary needs), and/or cheaper if you are looking. You can hit farmer's markets, but in my area they aren't really that much better as far as deals go unless you are looking for specific foods. Food banks certainly exist, and they are pretty laid back about who gets food, but I've never hit the point of wanting to use one up here.
You don't eat out, drink alcohol, and treats end up being the most cost-effective ones possible. I ended up going with the cheapest fresh stuff I could find in stores for the number of services, to supplement frozen and canned. Fresh veggies really are the cheapest way to eat healthy. Cheaper the better: my usual "spaghetti sauce" was mostly carrots. Potatoes are literally cheaper than dirt here (Washington state: less than $2 per ten pound bag, not sure if it's that way anywhere else). Homemade salsa, mustard, and cost-effective heat seasonings are the condiments of choice - they stretch the furthest.
If you don't want to cook a great deal, you can live on a crock pot or rice cooker. They are essentially $10-$20 investments these days. Dump everything in before leaving, come home to cooked food. It's not amazing, but it's sustenance on days where you are too lazy to cook for yourself. You can also cook and freeze, which is cheaper than buying frozen meals. Or, cook and refrigerate if you are someone like me who can eat the same leftovers for days at a time. Crockpot also means homemade soups, another great use for cheap veggies and potatoes. And acorn squash adds a great creaminess to chili (a great penny-stretching food). Sliced bread can be purchased relatively cheap, but almost any other baked good needs to be made at home.
If you are a carnivorous family then chicken and tuna are your friend, but they are still not going to be cheap enough to be eaten regularly. Chicken does well with rice and beans, making it the natural choice for crockpot meat. Pork, and even beef, can be had when really good sales roll around - but that often makes them holiday meals (which I'm okay with). Cheese and fresh dairy in my experience is never cheap enough, and the only regular dairy we did was powdered milk. The trick with all of these is creating meals that use them sparingly, such as chicken in a crockpot giving flavor to everything else.
I do grow greens in the warm months here (because I've got the greatest cheap AND lazy way to ever do it), but other than that I don't hunt or garden.
Ultimately, it's doable, but it requires a complete disconnection from the "Murican Diet" of fast food and brand names. You work with healthier foods, smaller portion sizes, and less pre-packaged/pre-made products.
I've got good news for you

For me, it makes biting hard things painful for a day or so afterward, but it tastes delicious. That's the meat only, though, not the peel. One thing to note is that lemons/limes contain crazy high amounts of sugar, but it's usually overpowered by the bitter. For people who can't taste sour as well/like sour, it's probably a more reasonable proposition.
If you're not a big fan of sour, though, try this out, it'll blow your mind. It blocks your sour receptors similar to how you stop tasting sweet after you eat too many sweet things, so you can eat crazy sour stuff and enjoy the other flavors in it. Lemons taste amazing with that stuff, the only thing I can compare it to is the little puddle of molten sugar left over from when you don't mix your sugar well enough into your coffee. I'd recommend giving it a go to anyone.
\ I have annoyingly sensitive teeth, however, and use sensodyne daily/appear to require an average of 2 more doses of novacaine than normal to not feel my mouth anymore.
If he likes food (and most guys do) and trying new things get some miracle berry chews. They make bitter foods taste sweet. They seem pretty cool and like they would be fun to try. I think they make a very unique gift. I just bought some for my friends Christmas gift this year.

Also, they're only 13 dollars for a 10-count. I purchased a different brand for the same price, but for some reason the ones I bought are now $29.00. This brand has just as good reviews though. Hope this helped.
I got these, shipped to Finland okay. It's a fun thing to do but not really great culinary adventure. Like, I wouldn't get them for a fancy dinner.
Are you talking about this?

Buy some of these, and have her dissolve one on her tongue, then you can eat a lemon straight without the slightest annoyance... it tastes like candy.

Most long term bulk storage lists suggest rice. I suppose options for cooking are the one you have prepared and defended.
I was just looking at the list and can not imagine having time to cook with flour every day. I bake edible bread, but I am not a pastry chef. This recipe seems a simpler option to make a sandwich from scratch.
My partner really enjoyed Onigiri when he visited Japan. He bugged me to learn how to make them. You really don't need the Nori, furikake is all you need to make them taste good. I even got a mold to make them faster.

> The problem is healthier food is way more expensive than the other options, so its asking people on food stamps, in essence, to get less. The real push should be in making healthy options more affordable.
15lb bag of rice, $22
5lb bag of chick peas, $15
Frozen veggies are cheap, frozen meats are cheap, potatoes are cheap, onions are cheap.
Luckily you can eat healthily and not spend a ton of money doing it.
It's not going to be the actual recipe, but I'd try to use the modernist mac and cheese recipe as a starting place, because it's so simple and easy.
Basically, sodium citrate is an amazing emulsifier of cheese. Commercial American cheeses typically use sodium phosphate, which is essentially equivalent. You can basically just combine water/milk/beer, sodium citrate, and cheese, and end up with high quality homemade velveeta in 5-10 minutes. You can easily scale up the recipe; it's 100 parts cheese, 93 parts liquid, and 4 parts sodium citrate.
12 oz Allagash White
13 oz Cheddar
.5 oz Sodium Citrate
allspice + cayenne to taste
Shred cheddar.
Put beer in saucepan on medium heat.
Add sodium citrate.
Add cheese, stirring until it dissolves into the sauce.
Season with salt, allspice and cayenne to taste.
That's not king sized - I have some that are 1/2 lb EACH. They're about 4" in diameter. I picked them up on sale for $3.99 each.
This is the most popular sushi rice in the US.

> It would require someone to have ketchup and sriracha sauce and I just don't ever see that happening.
Why not?
I don't use Sriracha I use Sembal Oelek, very close. Sriracha has experienced a surge in popularity lately though. Marketing.
Funny thing, I have this on my desk in front of me, and I'm sure it was less than five bucks. Amazon wants sixty bucks for it???
Edit: Just went to T&T, you can buy Sriracha ketchup there.
