I really want this stand but I need to figure out how to re-arrange my room so it'll fit, since the avaliable locations for it is within range of the door/closet door.

I bought this unit on cyber Monday for $10, it turns on and off with the TV and is pretty convenient.

Static color. I'd hate if they were responsive. I have these for both my monitor and my TV. They help with eye strain A LOT and I honestly think it helps with the contrast of colors.

Materials:

Three 5-gallon buckets and one lid (Ace Hardware has white ones for $4, if you don't want orange or blue from HD or Lowe's.) All three cost $12-13.

THESE LEDS from Amazon. $13.59

THIS POWER SUPPLY, the Supernight LED Charger. It is $20.99. You will also need a power cord for it, which I recommend just going to literally ANY thrift store and picking out a nice three-pronged power cord. I'm fairly certain that any three-pronged power cord will work, so if you have one you're not using at home, you can use that.

THIS LED GROW LIGHT, which is 300w and cost $50.99.

TWO of these PC fans. Total cost $10.04.

I bought one of this black duct tape, one of this foil tape (although I recommend buying two, as I ran out with my first roll and had to buy another from the store), and also some double-sided tape, because, if your LED strip is like mine, the adhesive backing is almost nonexistent and the tape becomes necessary.

Oh, and good-quality velcro adhesive patches!

You will also need a power drill and a sturdy box cutter.

I started by taping the entire interior of one bucket with the foil tape, save for the bottom portion where the soil goes. Then I covered the outside with the black tape. Next I drilled holes in the bottom for drainage.

Then I took two of the other buckets and used a ruler's width to mark a cut line right below the lip of each bucket to create spacers. The process of cutting the plastic buckets was definitely the worst part of the process, especially since I didn't have a great cutter, so if you're getting a new one, don't be too cheap. I got this one and it's blade locking function no longer works after this project, so be advised. I lined the spacers with foil tape.

Using the remains of one of the other buckets, I trimmed more of the bucket down so that it's now only the bottom and stands 5" tall. I found some random large screws in my toolbox and drilled them around the circumference, which allows the rest of the bucket to be easily lifted off of the drain pan.

I then drew a circle about 1 cm in from the lip of the lid and cut that out. The light fits perfectly on it. There is lots of light escape at the rim, but it looks pretty cool, so I don't mind it for now.

For the power supply, I cut off the female end of the three-pronged cord I got from Arc Thrift and stripped the wires down a bit. There were three wires inside, green (ground), white (neutral), and black (live), which I then connected to driver. I was certain to unplug during any wire-play and I hope everyone else is, too.

The sidelights were sort of a struggle. I used a scrap of the buckets, like maybe 4-5 inches of bucket from about half-way down to a quarter, so not much. I then lined the inside with the double-sided tape, cutting strips, in an effort to conserve tape, which feels very stable. I drilled a hole and fed the cable through, then determined the best spot to drill a hole on the exterior bucket. It's about at the center of the bucket, or in my case, 13 cm down from the lip. Finally, I fed the LED cable through the exterior hole and the lights were basically in place, where it would sit right above the soil.

I didn't want to have to extend any cords, so I found an ideal spot to place the driver on the exterior so that all cables (LED strip, both fans) could reach their appropriate ports. I fixed the velcro onto the bucket and the driver and tidied the wires with some more duct tape.

Finally, I sealed the edges of both fans, inside and outside, with their respective tapes.

I'm pretty sure that's everything I've done to this point, but if I think of anything else, I'll add it. I'm likely going to black-out the spacers to reduce light leak.

Please let me know if you have any advice, questions, comments!

Thank you /r/SpaceBuckets, for the inspiration and wisdom!

u/pier25 · 4 pointsr/Monitors

I've been battling with this myself during this past year. This is what I've learned.

Here are the factors that influence eye strain:

  1. PWM Cheaper and older LED monitors use a technique called pulse width modulation to lower the brightness of the screen. So instead of lowering the power of the LED, the LEDs are still at max brightness but flash intermittently on and off at a slower speed. This produces eye strain on a lot of people and the Dell U2412M (I also have one in a box) has PWM.

A simple way of checking if your monitor has PWM is lowering the brightness and waving your hand fast in front of the monitor. You should see "steps" instead of a fluid motion. Another way is by using a camera.

    More info here.

  2. Text size Sadly in macOS you can't scale all the UI (either hiDPI or not) but in Windows 10 you can scale. Text should be comfortable to read. Small text produces eye strain, specially if you need glasses.

For example a 1440p monitor at 24 or even 27 inches may produce text that is too small to read if you are over 35 years old. In my experience the ideal resolution is 4K at 27 inches with hiDPI on macOS or 175%-200% scaling in Windows.

  3. Blue light Some monitors and some software such as F.Lux allow you to lower the amount of blue light which for some people can cause eye strain.

  4. Room lighting This may seem trivial but is very important. You need to have some light source behind your monitor. This is called bias lighting and you can buy some LED strips to fix this. Also beware of strong light sources coming from your side vision such as windows.

  5. Matte panels Some people have problems focusing on some matte anti glare coatings which forces your eyes and produces eye strain. It's rare, but I have suffered this myself with some Dell monitors. The problem is that it's very difficult to buy a glossy monitor these days.

I know I'm not really answering your question here... but we just installed 5 more foot of cabinet space and my wife wanted some under cabinet lighting. I looked on Amazon and most of the stuff was pretty expensive.

I opted instead to do LED strip lighting and ordered 32' of it + transformer + dimmer for the same price as 24" of any of the other solutions. The pluses are:

  • LED strips can be cut into 2" sections so you can cut it to length (soldering is required but very minor and simple)
  • The strips have sticky back so you can stick it right under the counter. I used some glue to help some parts stay but not too necessary.
  • Very low voltage and power consumption.
  • Wires are easy to hide

    Pics are here: http://imgur.com/a/R6ynJ

    Here's what I got:

    Transformer/Power Supply

    Warm White LED Strips (16ft)

    Dimmer w/Wireless Remote

I used 2x 16ft strips and it worked just fine. Came up to a total of $63.25

This smart lightbulb can be controlled thru a smartphone app, will that work?

u/sppeedracer · 3 pointsr/Judaism

have you checked out the 'smart bulbs' that are out- they have bluetooth and you control them with an app on your phone.

You can set timers, have different colors, patterns. sunrise and sunset, ie dim off at night and dim on in the morning.

u/SpaceBucketFu · 3 pointsr/SpaceBuckets

People typically use the SMD 5630, water-proof LED strips, as seen here

For more build-material info, check out the www.spacebuckets.com materials page

The SMD5050 variety would work, but are less efficient.

The larger chipsizes such as the SMD7020 draw too much power and get quite warm, increasing difficulty in the heat management department as well as probably being just a tad too bright to be positioned so close to the plant canopy.

edit- Added 7020 info and accidentally admin removed/approved

u/ikariusrb · 3 pointsr/woodworking

I went with LED strips to light my garage; I ran one under each of the 4 beams running across my garage, which is ~ 18'x19' in size. I'm really really happy with the result; there's a lot of light, and it's coming from everywhere, which means very few problems with shadows, and there's virtually no risk of breaking a light when moving big pieces of wood around in my garage. These are the strips I used; just need some power supplies to run em, I can dig up the power supplies and splitters I used if you're interested.

It does not have to be anything specific as long as you have a way to give it power, for example, these are good as they use USB:

Added it myself, works on any 5V USB port your TV should have. Here is the product. There are probably cheaper versions of it available, but this one was recommended by a colleague.

I just got a cheap strip of lights off Amazon and then put in a Smart Switch to control them (I used this set, for $13). If you're going to go with Caseta then I'd do that - assuming you power your strip off a switchable outlet. If it's not switched, then I'd put in a smart outlet.

Usually i'd go for AMD but since you've mentioned VR & 4K this is Intel & RTX2080 Ti build. That case has bundled Corsair Commander PRO RGB controller & 3x LL120 fans, nice bundle if you were planning to get RGB anyway. Add some RGB strips and you're done.

I actually just answered this in my cross post :)

>The nukacola in the images? I made it! Just take some classic coke bottles (I bought some from a Mexican dealer, which sounds shady but was just cheaper to get the glass bottles), use a blade to scrape off the labels, and you can find labels online that are already pre-formatted. Print them onto label paper (or just use a gluestick) and cut those suckers out and stick them on.

>To give them the aged, post-nuclear holocaust effect, simply take a dry brush and some burnt umber acrylic paint, and with very little paint GENTLY brush it.

>For Quantum, take the same steps, but crack open the bottles and drink the coke. Be sure the bottles are really clean, add water to just below the brim, and then use a bit of neon food coloring (you can buy special neon packs; looks way better) to color it. Then get some of the push-lights and use a blue sharpie to color the outside (to help the light shine brighter with the blue water).
After that you can do the same steps to weather it. I also weathered the push light to make it a tad cooler.

>Right now I'm working on making the six-pack carrier, as I have 3 nukacolas and 3 Quantums.

?Oh!! As for caps I just spray painted the normal caps red (with enamel paint) and painted the logo on in acrylic. For the Quantums I actually took some Coor's caps (which are silver) and sanded off the logo, which gave a super cool silver-y effect.

Hope this helps you!! :)

They're super cool :) I hope to make a working lamp soon :D

You will also need 12V power supplies for it. I have light-switch-controlled outlets in my apartment. Other people go with complex IR-controlled dimmers and such.

u/imperialka · 2 pointsr/photography

I'm thinking of buying an RGB LED strip for photography purposes but I'm confused on how this works. I can buy a remote separately to control the lights but how is it powered? Through AC? Or outlet? Is it a simple plug and play out of the box or is there some sort of modification I have to make to it?

I use to have LED lights (90W LED grow light, 2 inches above my cactus) and they were pretty happy, except the pinkish blue color really hurts my eye and make my room like Christmas year round. I switched to a 125W CFL and a 4x 24w T5HO (both around 10000lm, 2-3 inches above the plant). so far I couldn't tell the difference other than a couple dollar more in power bill and a lot more pleasant light.

none of my cactus etiolated under those lights yet (4 months under LED and 2 under CFL/T5HO) so far I like the CFL better because I can upgrade it to a 200w/switch the spectrem to red easily to induce flower. but that sum up all the experience I have with lights, hopefully it helps

I am currently in the process of building one of these OpenAg Food Computers and this item is not on the list that I purchased. I do have some white LED adhesive strips off amazon, which it looks right now that they will be for illumination of the computer side of the unit. Inside the growth chamber we have two Erligpowht 45W LED: https://www.amazon.com/Erligpowht-Indoor-Garden-Plant-Hanging/dp/B00S2DPYQM/ref=sr_1_fkmr2_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1443799150&sr=8-2-fkmr2&keywords=grow+led+panel+erwl

These will be the main source of lighting growing the plants. The white LEDs are only for visual appeal, which I'm assuming would be the same for those LEDs by GE.

I haven't had any problems with the non-waterproof strips. I usually take my plants out of their containers to water, so I haven't worried about them. However, if I were to buy more side lighting I would get more of these warm white 5630 waterproof strips. Their spectrum is a little cooler than the 7020s and they seem somewhat brighter as well.

The only thing is that the USB will stay powered for 15 minutes after you turn off the TV. Get the Large if you want it to all the way around the back of the TV. I get a lot of compliments on the way it looks and think it makes the TV picture look sharper and darker. The TCL has a horrible backlight and this fixes that somewhat.

For the LED Strips, get a cheap smart outlet and use these: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01LW7ZSRZ/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o09_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Much, much cheaper than the Hue strip. We have these on top and underneath our cabinets and it looks great.

the DZ60 has underglow leds but no backlight leds - no need to get LED strips for this PCB.

But if you need led strips, I've used these before no problems -

You should just use a microcontroller and some addressable LEDs. You could definitely do this in discrete hardware but why? It would be a big pain to adjust the rate at which it dims or a bunch of other parameters.

As an additional plus if you do those particular LEDs you could choose exactly what color you want your light to be, and adding a sensor to detect when the lights go out is trivial.

I wouldn't go down this path personally, there are better ways to do it.

For a start it's too much current draw for a 9V battery, I fully agree with u/burgerga, something like WS2812B (or WS2813B) would be much more ideal, with much lower current consumption.

9V batteries have a full charged capacity of around 500mAh, if you plan on connecting 1.8Amps worth of LED's (300mA x 6) then the battery will last about 15-20 minutes tops. They simply aren't designed for high current draw, they are meant for very low current draw devices like smoke detectors etc.

WS2812B's are about 60mA per LED (20mA per colour, 3 colours being RGB) so 6 of them would draw 360mA at bright white or 120mA with just the Red LED's on etc, if run at full white and they can be had in many different configurations. So worst case draw of 360mA would give you nearly 2 hours from a 9V battery.

A simple setup would be:

  • Cheapest mini style Arduino as possible, something like this (can be had cheaper from China).
  • Attach a 5V strip or string of WS2812B's like this or this (again, cheaper from China)
  • Load an example sketch into the Arduino from the NeoPixel or FastLED library and job done.

If you are feeling creative then you can program the LEDs to be any colour in any pattern at any speed, WS2812B's are addressable so literally every LED can be a different colour, or off. Check some videos on youtube of the WS2812B they are very cool.

I don't see anything that confirms they have a male/female plug setup to link together. The listing doesn't say anything about it, and none of the answers do either. Def more "inconclusive" than "verifiably the case", tho.

You can usually DIY to link up RGB, but a ARGB splitter will be much more of the plug n play solution you're looking for. Since you only have one header, you could get something longer like this or this. I can't personally vouch for the quality of either of these products, though — just that they should be compatible with your setup and not require a splitter.

Walmart sells LED rope lights in-store that come in different colors. They are intended for outdoors decoration and located in the lighting section (hardware and light bulbs, not lamps) of the store. However, these are not battery powered, and as far as I can tell, you cannot program them to flash on and off.

An alternative would be to solder some waterproof LED strips to a DC connector, which you can then plug into a battery pack. If you go this route, make sure you research voltage and all that (not my strong suit, so I can't help you there). Also, make sure your battery source is protected in some sort of waterproof container, or just unplug it and keep it inside when not in use.

u/Renz2LK · 2 pointsr/cosplay

Maybe it was just my experience, but I've ordered many different brands of EL wire on Amazon from different sellers. As much as they kind of work, they aren't that bright. For each separate color, you can get a separate controller box for them. The more EL wire you attach to one controller box, the dimmer the light will be.

Will the EL wire basically be wrapped around the hook or are you incorporating it into the shell of the hook itself? In other words, will it look like it's glowing from within or are you just making it look like a Christmas tree?

I've seen people construct the hook and add color changing LEDs inside then cover the entire hook with a clear worbla to hide the LEDs and wires. This gives it an inner glow effect. You could do this same method w/ the EL wire, but it may not be as bright.

I don't have the RGB strips but I do have some bulbs from Lifx. I am pretty impressed with them and pretty sure they use the same LED's that the strips do. The app works well enough, they have a great glow, work with a phone app, can connect to Alexa for voice (yes even the LED strip) and a ton of effects. They are EXPENSIVE compared to others, but if they are anything like the bulbs I couldn't recommend them more and I'm sure the strips would be no different. I will be buying some when my current build is complete just to give some a dim under chassis glow.

you can wire the strips inside the case. i'm not too familiar with the noctis, but juding from pictures of it, it shouldn't be too hard to replace those lights with something like this: http://www.amazon.com/LEDwholesalers-Flexible-300xSMD3528-Adhesive-2026WH/dp/B002Q8V8DM

u/btreecat · 1 pointr/diydrones

waterproof LED strips of solid colors are easy to add and can run directly off a 3S (12v) battery.

https://www.amazon.com/LEDwholesalers-Flexible-300xSMD3528-Adhesive-2026WH/dp/B002Q8V8DM

But you will want to check out the different types of LED strips and see which kind you want. Different strips use different placement patterns which can affect overall brightness and power draw.

Alternatively if you have the space and equipment, you can add a dedicated BEC and use some RGB LED strips and wire them up to the FC so they can be controlled. But this becomes more difficult when you want to use a couple of small strips in a tight space.

u/App1eEater · 1 pointr/HomeImprovement

I'd suggest using LED light strips with their associated accessories on amazon. Basically you cut the strips to the length you want (at the marked cutting locations) and connect them together with the connectors they sell.

They have an adhesive back that you can use, but I suggest also stapling them as the adhesive fails over time. They have strips that are waterproof if you're concerned about that.

Tuck a dimmer & transformer in a cabinet and power the lights using an existing outlet.

u/Keithywhites · 1 pointr/3Dprinting

Nice xmas lights. I popped these on my printer and wired up a switch:

http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B002Q8V8DM?pc_redir=1397701771&robot_redir=1 you could totally put those in a road bike tire and pressure wouldn't be a problem. The hardest part would be a power source but you could put coils in the hubs to generate electricity. Storing the power so that they didn't just shut of when you stopped rolling might be a challenge and you would have to put a mud guard over the front tire so you don't fucking blind your self if you look down.

u/joseb · 1 pointr/flashlight

I recently added LED lighting to my closet and gun-cabinet using these:

LED Strip

In the closet I added a motion sensor (this one)
and a power adapter for 120v to 12v. Has tons of light and it's awesome having it be motion activated.

In the gun cabinet I used the same style LED strip, but am running it off of a battery (this one) and a toggle switch.

I could easily run another motion sensor in the cabinet though, that might work out better for your scenario. If you have the room for the battery you can just secure it with some double-sided tape, add the motion sensor and have it run an entire strip of the LEDs (it'll be very bright), though you might only need a few sections of LED.

u/Hoktfonix · 1 pointr/electricians

Thanks!

What is your thought on neutral white versus warm white? Looking at the two of them via this I think that neutral white is a better white.

Assuming I'm calculating right, these strips are 60 lights/meter and that's only like 4.88 watts/meter so the size of the PSU should not matter at all, just any 12v will be enough to supply it.

u/Tananar · 1 pointr/techsupportmacgyver

It's really nothing fancy. The ceiling fan light in my room doesn't work, so I have a lamp about 4 feet to the left. The desk is dark brown/black, so it was kinda hard to do schoolwork on. I just bought a reel of LEDs, used a 12v adapter from an old wireless router, and a relay. The Arduino turns the relay on/off, so the LEDs go with (but opposite) the relay. I'm not exactly great with creating things like this, so I accidentally reversed the relay. When it's on, the lights are off, but when it's off, the lights are on. I'm going to regret doing that some morning at 3:30 AM when the computer shuts off...

u/suprslow · 1 pointr/HomeImprovement

The setup I have patiently waiting to be installed uses these flexible, trimmable LED strips from Amazon. I was facing basically the same issues as you, so I'll end up mounting the LEDs along the top and entire length of both sides of the door frame. At the junctions between strips and corners, you can use the connectors sold in multi-packs.

I chose my power supply wattage based on this PDF from a manufacturer. Some supplies are sold with an AC cord and plug, and some are available with a hardwire option.

Rather than a motion sensor, I opted to use a jamb switch I picked up from Lowes. Just another option to consider.

u/karmedian · 1 pointr/Reprap

Great. I'll confirm with ryan turner what comes out of the box and go for a 24v. I really like your lighting, did you use something like this

u/yimmytedeski · 1 pointr/DIY

if you want individually addressable LEDs take alook at something like this: http://adafruit.com/products/306 you'll need something like an arduino to control them though.

If you want to just change the color of all of them at once then there are cheaper options like http://adafruit.com/products/285

There are also options for just getting a single color like a nice warm white. Those just need enough power to run the string and no control is needed. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B002QQ48TK/ref=oh_details_o03_s00_i00

As for your mounting method. I think that would work

You get something like this, and something like this.

The controller will include driver software and an interface for manipulating the LED strip. This controller includes documentation for scripting control and to make function calls through the Windows API for your own development purposes. You will have to find or create your own solution for hotkey mapping.

u/Aviyara · 1 pointr/buildapc

Most X99 boards either have NVME M.2 support out of the box, or can have it patched in in seconds with a USB keydrive. Mine needed the latter, but again - it took under a minute to do.

Why do you need more USB headers? Your case only has USB 3.0, and it only uses the one header. That's a really weird requirement.

The same aesthetic on your motherboard could be achieved for $100 cheaper by buying $5 RGB LED strips (and I'm serious about the price, [16 feet of the stuff is $20] (https://www.amazon.com/LEDwholesalers-16-4ft-Color-Changing-Flexible-2034RGB-R2/dp/B00476B908)) and custom-lighting a cheaper board yourself. You'd even have more control over what regions light up and which colors they turn. You're already buying an NZXT Hue+, so it's not like you'd need an extra lighting controller.

As someone who lives in WA state where it already grey and dingy I still love my basement apartment and other basement apartments I've lived in. My current place is completely absent of natural lighting but it is always pretty dark and cold. I hate my overhead fluorescent lighting so I installed remote controlled rgb led strip lighting kinda like this. I lined the baseboards of my room and it gives nice controllable mood lighting. I also have a couple desk/reading lamps.

As for cozy I suggest rugs. I recently bought a large shag rug and can't imagine walking on the cold basement tile ever again. Also I suggest a cushy armchair or couch if you have room. I recently added a loveseat with giant cushions and even though I barely use my room feels way more like a room now. I'm a big fan of minimalist design but after living in so many basements that weren't originally intended to be bedrooms I found the right furniture (not just talking about beds) can make any room feel like a bedroom.

My last suggestion would be to get something on the wall. Like I said I like minimalism so I usually don't do posters or fancy wall decorations. However I found that large blank walls depress me just as much as no natural light, especially if the walls are white or grey. I usually put up a nice map or something that can stand on its own. In my current place though I just have one of the walls painted a nice deep dark crimson and it totally makes the simply because it adds color.

TLDR: RGB LED strip lighting is not to expensive and can transform the mood of any room as the push of a button on a remote.

couple things:

  1. The https://ca.pcpartpicker.com/product/qYTrxr/evga-power-supply-220g20550y1 would be a good choice for a PSU, will last significantly longer than something like a 500b, and is also more efficient and all cables are removable so you only have to put in the cables that you actually need.

  2. I'd personally go for the https://ca.pcpartpicker.com/product/KBtWGX/evga-geforce-gtx-1080-ti-11gb-ftw-gaming-icx-video-card-11g-p4-6696-kr above the Strix as it's a bit cheaper but has a couple gimmicky things that are cool to play around with and should cool as well if not better (EVGA warranty is amazing aswell.)

  3. If you are actually gonna get a 1080ti, get a 1440p 144hz monitor instead of a 1080p one, might be a significant price bump but if you're gonna get a 1080ti you gotta make use of it aswell.
    (cheapest one with G-Sync is https://ca.pcpartpicker.com/product/CwgPxr/dell-s2417dg-238-165hz-monitor-s2417dg )

  4. I'd personally go for the https://ca.pcpartpicker.com/product/NRvZxr/phanteks-case-phes515etgbk over the Enthoo Luxe tempered any day of the week over the Enthoo Luxe because it has (imo) a better aesthetic appeal and it also has a tempered glass backpanel.

  5. If you think you're not gonna overclock much and a 120mm rad will be enough then you don't need such an expensive mobo either. I'd personally go for the significantly cheaper https://ca.pcpartpicker.com/product/69X2FT/asus-strix-z270h-atx-lga2011-motherboard-strix-z270h

  6. You could always pick up a 1m LED strip that you can plug straight into the case on https://www.amazon.ca/Phanteks-Multi-Color-Strips-Upgrade-PH-LEDKT_M1/dp/B00M0R2OTG if you wanna have a bit more lighting in there, you could also link up the LED strips with your motherboard if you get the http://www.ncix.com/detail/phanteks-rgb-led-adapter-for-36-130364.htm

  7. Are you gonna be doing anything other than gaming? If you're not doing anything else then getting 32 GB of RAM is waaaaaaaaaaaaay overkill, and if you are gonna do something like video rendering on it aswell I'd recommend getting a Ryzen setup instead.

Phanteks Multi-Color LED Strips 1 Meter Enthoo Luxe Case Upgrade (PH-LEDKT_M1) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00M0R2OTG/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_tai_bdoTyb2FW5TKB

It says enthoo lux etc only, but the reviews and myself can confirm it works in a p400s. powered by a SATA connection (weird to me) but the LED control button on the case controls it along with the power light so they all match. Works fine. Connected by magnets. Only issue is they're too weak to run upside down in the case — I have them running along the bottom and the LEDS along the bottom are exposed.

This proprietary Phanteks extension. In the Luxe there is an extra 4 pin adapter for this (or the 2m version) to be added to light up the inside of the case. Color matches the external strips.

You're certainly within the ballpark about my current place in life. I just finished graduate school and am working two part time jobs, so money is a bit tight at the moment.

I actually found the couch and loveseat being tossed away and got them for free. Bonus that they weren't gross at all--or I wouldn't have taken them to start with, haha. I also got the tables from a Facebook group in the area. I'm always scanning those pages in hopes of something cohesive.

My plan with the lamps was to eventually replace the bulbs with an iPhone controlled LED that allows you to change colors really easily. I will admit they look a bit doofy at the moment, but I think once my entertainment stand comes it will help conceal them.

I'll probably do a follow-up when everything has arrived. Thanks! :)

For $30, here's something fun: Bluetooth-controlled color changing LED lightbulb

I got one of these for a gift, and it's fantastic! Kinda on the fringe of engineering, but it's a great a gift idea that I never would've purchased for myself.

u/mr_mooses · 1 pointr/AndroidWear

I mean like the one that's default in the center, that opens the multiple different actions.

I’d like to have top be calendar, right be most commonly used wear apps (whoopee wear, hangouts, keep etc) and then left be phone apps that I would like to launch, mostly for in the car that have an auto play sort of option so I wouldn’t have to touch my phone at all, or try to yell over the road noise. (waze, Pandora, google play music, or some specific playlists etc)
I have a Bluetooth led light that my girlfriend got me for Christmas. Since the watch tap actions have tasker support I'm going to make some tasker things (somehow) to be able to have that turn on and off my light from my watch.

The OSRAM LED Strip might work, but the Hue will be the most robust. Would still require a Hue hub if you went that direction. Wink can't talk directly to Hue products. You won't find anything that is "smart" in the $20 price range yet, could always go smart plug and just power cycle on and off.

u/joshiness · 1 pointr/homeautomation

I agree with everyone else, any speakers you want and connect it to the dot. what kind of light strip do you have? Or are you looking for one? Amazon has the Sylvania one on sale right now.

https://smile.amazon.com/SYLVANIA-ZigBee-Starter-SmartThings-Assistant/dp/B00R1PB80I?sa-no-redirect=1

Great thing is you can buy a cheap Chinese Led strip to extend it for cheap, just make sure it's a 5 pin strip.

If you are looking for a zwave controller I would go with the Fibraro micro controller:

https://smile.amazon.com/Fibaro-Micro-Controller-Z-wave-Strips/dp/B00P1N68FW?sa-no-redirect=1

Of course you would then need a hub. I personally use smartthings but if you are more technically inclined and want everything to stay local you can use it with HASS, you'll just need to pick up a zwave/zigbee stick.

u/mareksoon · 1 pointr/winkhub

FWIW, I just got my first Lightify RGBW bulb and some light strips.

Bulb had 0.1b02/0.3b22 out of the box; now has 0.1b02/0.3b32 (and it reverted to default color / brightness after upgrading, as described).

My Wink, however, is still on 3.3.26, so no 0.1b02/0.4b92 bulb upgrade for me ... yet.

RGBW light strips are on 0.1b02/0.2b05.

What does this upgrade fix/add/improve? I've already noticed the status of the bulb in Wink is often wrong (typically, the wrong color is displayed in the app). I'm also disappointed the bulbs won't remember their last color/brightness, but I've already read all of the drama about why Phillips opted for this with their Hue products so I kind of anticipated it but was hopeful Sylvania handled it differently. I'd really prefer these come on at 4000K (when power is cut/restored at the switch). Also upset the shortest robot is 1 minute, so I can't even have Wink change them to the color I want within a second of turning on.

... and I guess, unlike the Lutron switches, the Sylvania bulbs don't recall their last power state following a power outage? I can expect any room that has these to come up full 2700K brightness any time power is restored????

LASTLY, I was totally surprised to learn that THIS kit included the power supply and controller (not the hub). The packaging is rather misleading compared to this one.

... therefore, I TWICE paid TWICE as much to only receive a third light-strip (I purchased two of the 3-strip packs and 1 of the 2-strip)!!! So head's up for anyone else shopping for these!

u/JonathanGraft · 1 pointr/homeautomation

When it comes time to buy a LED light strip for my home I'm thinking of trying the Osram Lightify RGBW LED strip. It's rather cheap & can work directly with SmartThings, no Lightify hub needed.

Right now I have three of these, they're dirt cheap and it really shows in the construction quality (cheap plastic, fiberboard back, zero waterproofing, included hanging wires are useless) but they work extremely well and the cons are pretty easily overcome. I have mine mounted with small zip ties to the underside of the shelf above the growing area which keeps it safe from water and damage and removes the need for the crappy mounting wire. The oldest one has been on 14 hours a day for four months and is working as well as the day I got it. Here's my new seedling set up that is a slight improvement over the one that produced the plants shown right now I have Droseras finlaysoniana, venusta, tokianesis, Filiformis red, auriculata, hookeri, Nidiformis, Capensis, and burmannii either germinating or as small plants and will be sewing binata, Capensis wide leaf, and intermedia cuba next week, plus I have a tray of ~50 sensitive plants, 8 dancing plants, 15 drosyphylum, and a couple desert rose seeds all germinating in a greenhouse. The plan is to sell most of the drosera at the end of the summer if they're big enough and make back some of what I've spent collecting.

u/SantiagoSentMe · 1 pointr/SpaceBuckets

I put my intakes towards the top of the bucket and my exhaust fan in the lid. It mostly depends on what type of pot you're going to use. If it fills your bucket then you'll want to have them high enough so the air isn't blocked. If there's some space around it then you could go lower but be sure to leave a little space at the bottom if you plan to make a drainage tray. I planned my bucket with a 3 gallon smart pot in mind so i kept the intakes high enough to not be obstructed. There's a link to my first bucket in my profile as Ekropf was kind enough to put it on spacebuckets.com. I haven't taken pics of my 2nd bucket yet, but it's similar. That site has lots of great pictures and info. If you do end up using an intake fan you'll want to mount it somewhere that doesn't blow directly on the top of your pot as it will dry out the top layer of the medium too quickly so the wet/dry cycle will be tough to maintain.
I can't stress the passive intake enough. I was very much of the opinion that I was going to have 1 intake and 1 exhaust fan but some very good people here pointed me in the right direction before I started building. You can see the thread and comments in my profile. (Hoping I can pass along the knowledge I gained. The people on this subreddit are awesome and helped me immensely.) I was very pleasantly surprised by the pvc elbows. They're only about 80 cents each and since I had already ordered 2 fans I made a 2nd bucket. Also, if odor control is important to you then you'll want to maintain negative pressure in your bucket. Intake fans can lead to positive pressure and air leak whereas passive will guarantee negative pressure. Just Google it if you haven't read about it yet.

Regarding the fans; here's what I bought. They're plug and play for a regular outlet.
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B009OWRMZ6/ref=ya_st_dp_summary
I also got lamp dimmers for my fans and they work great. Here's a link but I found them for 7 bucks at a local home store similar to Lowes or Home Depot.

I'd recommend getting a temp/humidity weather monitor and try your bucket with 1 fan first. You can always install a 2nd if needed. It's important to check temp/humidity with your pot and medium in the bucket...I found its much different than an empty bucket. Something like this...

WS2812B strips can be hooked up to a Lighting Node Pro or Commander Pro; the Corsair strips are WS2812B strips with magnets on the back. I used Dupont female to female wires to go from the JST connector on the strip to the Commander Pro's LED channel connector.

I believe I used this strip on Amazon. iCUE will only work with 60 LEDs on a channel, so one meter with 60 LEDs worked out as a more dense solution than the ones Corsair makes. If you are less inclined to DIY the cabling, these cables on eBay would do the same thing.

I also bought this to be able to cut the LED strip to length and keep the strip on the same LED channel by extending the wiring. Clamp the connectors down well to the LED strip and the wires and they work great.

u/wcngm43 · 1 pointr/Corsair

u/zaruthoj · 1 pointr/flying

Ah I see. I used this kind of LED strip, so I had to cut and solder each LED to get it in position.

Your way is so much better.

u/tusing · 1 pointr/MechanicalKeyboards

> Which strips exactly did you use?

These ones. Make sure to use the 60 LED/meter ones!

> Did you glue them on?

The strips have adhesive. You can glue them on or use electrical tape. Up to you. I used hot glue because it let me angle the strips slightly outwards, so more light would escape (as opposed to just shining down on the aluminum backplate).

If you want to angle the strips outwards but don't have hot glue, cut a piece of wire and use it as a fulcrum when you tape the strips down.

> Will using a 2.0 usb just not make the keyboard work or will it burn my computer my keyboard and maybe my house ?

If you're powering the keyboard of a very cheaply-designed USB hub, it might draw too much current through the device and brick it. This has an extremely small chance of happening, though. There shouldn't be any risk of fires.

I've used the keyboard on plenty of USB 2.0 hubs without problem.

> How tf do you do step one in your tutorial?

I soldered small-gauge wires - you can see them in my picture. I found silicone-insulated wire easiest to work with.

> are the strips heavy or light?

The strips feel quite light. They certainly shouldn't be so heavy as to pull the PCB down. The strips are only $10 so give it a shot and see what you think.

> How sturdy are the switches on holtites, btw?

They stopped working after some time. I'd recommend putting the Holtites in the socket instead of on the switch. I haven't had a problem with any of my switches after I did that.

Sorry for the late response!
