Gray cables are data; one to my Switch's dock for a controller, "two" for my mini wireless keyboard, and one micro-USB and one USB-C going to my computer. The red ones are all for charging and connect to an Anker charger I have mounted under my desk. One for USB-C PD, two USB-C, and one micro-USB.

u/LiveByThyGuN · 39 pointsr/battlestations

Same. I have a 46" above my setup to watch movies in my bed from behind. I use this little cute thing to control my computer from anywhere in my room, so its extra convenient not having to get up to turn up/down the volume.

I don't have a details comment right now, since I forgot to put my TMUX rc on my dotfiles repo. I plan on changing it a little and I'll update with one

Edit:

Oh my this got more attention than I thought. So here's the finer details:

Computer: Raspberry Pi 3 B+

Display: 3.5" PiTFT

Tmux Conf: On my doflie repo

Keyboard for 'pocket' use: This thing

I don't have a case yet, but I'm working with a buddy of mine to make a custom one. If we are able to get it made I'll post it to this sub.

Good solutions:

  1. Download the Xbox SmartGlass app on your smartphone and use the keyboard on there.

  2. Buy an off-brand chatpad as a temporary solution until Microsoft makes an official one.

  3. Buy one of these great mini wireless rechargeable keyboards: Candy Bar style & Controller Style

Have it hooked onto my TV downstairs on wifi internet while my computer is wired using an ethernet cable, works amazing. Add on something like this to help navigate websites faster and a Xbox controller and I have a perfect set up to play steam games and watch online sports streams.

Games on the link is fine as long as it's not a game that requires super low input lag. I can't play like CSGO or Rocket League on it.. But any single player/casual game is great - Fallout 4, Witcher 3, Binding of Isaac, Enter the Gungeon are all fine.

I don't know HomeDepots official dog policy, but yes, he goes with me all the time there, employees all love him, he is NOT a service dog, and lots of Dogs are in there. I usually see this in HomeDepots that are deeper in residential areas, not so much in a more industrial area...

I'd recommend one of these Rii Mini Wireless 2.4GHz Keyboard with Mouse Touchpad Remote Control, Black (mini X1) I've used one in several pi projects. It's the smallest USB keyboard I know of.

If that's too big, you might look at a Bluetooth iPhone keyboard-case... Like this: Bluetooth Qwerty Keyboard Sliding Case for iPhone 5/5S - Backlit, Rubberized or this one: [Hype Mini Bluetooth Keyboard - Pink - For - iPhone ...] (https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00D48ZQSQ/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_CPMDxbACMM8GT)

EDIT: After re-reading your question, I think you're looking for something different. That alibaba link didn't work on my phone this morning, so I didn't realize you were looking for a kayPad, not necessarily a keyboard. and I guess I didn't notice the 2" stipulation... so, obviously a qwerty keyboard is out.

If you're just looking for some buttons and don't mind doing some EE work, you might look at some of the keypads for Arduino projects. Like this: New Keyestudio Large Button 4*4 Matrix Keypad for Arduino UNO&MEGA/raspberry pi/AVR/STM32 that you can connect directly to the PI's IO pins... or you could even use that with an Arduino as a USB Keyboard

Though if you really did need Qwerty BlackBerry like keyboard that size, you might try one of these keyboard cases: Samsung Galaxy S6 edge+ Keyboard Cover

Okay, let's do this:

PC Case: The Cardboard 500 About $20

RAM: Dual Horn Can't find a price but you might have to steal one while it's young

Hard Drive: The Enterprise Prolly a decent amount of money, I would say $50.

GPU: Dustomatic 980i Prolly real cheap. $50 or take it out of your dad's computer in the basement.

Mouse and Keyboard: Logitech MK270 $20

Windows License: Just pick one

There you go, less than $300. Might not work, but we got it done.

u/SigonLegacy · 16 pointsr/pcmasterrace

As configured by you (i7, 3TB HD, 4GB video card), the cost comes to $3099.00. I added in 16GB of memory over the stock 8 since that's pretty much standard for most builds, anymore.

5k Dell Monitor: $1,439.99

Retail i7-4790: $307.00

Gigabyte GA-Z97-HD3 Motherboard: $102.95

Crucial Ballistix Sport 16GB Kit: $66.99

Corsair Carbide SPEC-01 Mid Tower Case: $48.99

Silverstone Tek 500W 80+ Gold PSU: $79.99

EVGA GeForce GTX 960 4GB Video Card: $229.99

CM Storm Devastator KB/Mouse Combo: $29.99

Total Cost: $2305.89

Video card was a bit of a toughie since the iMac uses a notebook GPU, so I went with something a bit faster, but comparable. This is a complete system with comparable to better specs.

Given the price difference, may as well go with a 980Ti for that extra graphics oomph or tack on some water cooling.

Edit: Woops! Forgot storage and OS!

WD Blue 3TB HD: $98.70

Samsung 850 EVO 120GB (configured as cache drive): $66.99

Windows 10 Home: $119.00

Revised Total: $2590.58. Still cheaper and could still sub out the 960 for a 980Ti and be under cost.

DO NOT get one from those guys selling them at kiosks or anywhere when they say it's "fully loaded", "programed". Years ago I bought one from them for 130$ ... it was an mbox, the mbox is 34$ on amazon ...

Get any android box on amazon, bestbuy any electronic store. The program these droid box tv sellers install is easy as hell to install and setup. It's as easy to install as any app on android or iphone. Setting it up and customizing it to your needs keeps you flexible when one source goes down or when you want to add another new one. And maybe you'd want one of these. Using the basic android box controller is usable but too time consuming.

Once you have a droid box and connected to the internet get the app KODI from google play.

KODI is an app meant to be a hub to access all your entertainment files on the droidbox, music, pictures, videos. Incidently people use it as hub to view movies and tv from independent websites. There are hundreds of independent website sources. Some movies, some tv, some live streams ... etc. In KODI it's reffered to as ADDONS.

Go to r/Addons4Kodi. There are many how to guides. Just follow them. Some may refer to it as XBMC. XBMC is the older version of KODI.

I would recommend these ADDONs. EXODUS, PHOENIX, SALTS for movies and tv and CCLOUD for live tv. There are literally thousands of international channels on CCLOUD. For spanish you'd have to google specifically for those addons.

Now you have the basics of it. But now you want to make it look presentable. You'd want to customize it youself. Stay away from BUILDS (this is what those sellers install, it's pretty much a copy and paste for them), BUILDS are like a customized theme with their chosen ADDONS.

Google a how to customize KODI. I use the mimic skin and just alter it through it's settings options. Once you have that setup how you like it, go to google play and get XBMC LAUNCHER app. This makes it so when you startup your android box it takes you directly to the KODI main menu.

Hope this give you an idea. It's pretty simple really.

That wireless keyboard/touchpad combo is the biggest piece of shit I've ever tried to use. Here it is for $18 on Amazon. I tried to use it in my living room to control a computer with a pickup receiver less than 3 feet away and it was choppy as all hell. The "touchpad" was a joke. I guess the only good thing about this was that it has a built in red laser to annoy my cat with.

CPU

Mother Board

GPU

8GB of RAM

1TB HDD for way more storage space then a console. You could drop the storage space to match a console and save a bit of money, but we won't do that.

PSU Cheaper/lower wattage for this build is possible, but it's better not to skimp

Disk drives are dying out and everything is going digital. Even consoles are showing massive growth in direct game purchases and downloads from PSN/XBL. But here it is if you want one.

Here's a few cases 1 2 3 4. Pick your case based on style, USB ports, whatever. All of those are 30 dollars or less and are mATX, meaning smaller form factor.

So now peripherals. Need a monitor? No you don't, plug it in to your TV. HDMI just like a console and consoles don't come with displays. You might have a monitor already.
Controller/input devices? PCs can use the old controllers you have laying around. Here's a keyboard and mouse recommendation anyway if you want one or don't already own them since most people own a computer for stuff outside gaming. That costs around half the price of an OEM console controller and KB+M is a more accurate input method. Controllers are a comfort thing and are best suited for driving games, but point and click with a high DPI sensor is much more intuitive and accurate than a controller with bad input filtering and clunky auto aim. Microsoft tried cross platform and keyboard and mouse destroyed gamepad/controller players. The only real cross platform right now is Rocket League because controllers are the better input method for driving so it's equal footing. But if you're playing Rocket League on PC, you load in faster. You'll be sitting on an empty field while you wait for other players to connect before the countdown and stuff starts, kinda neat. Also, that one I recommended has a button to change DPI/sensitivity on the fly, no need to bother with settings menus. Seamlessly go from sniping to roaming to driving. The keyboard is back lit and has a few color options.

Operating system? GNU/Linux is free and is getting more and more gaming support every day. It's not as hard as people make it out to be. Get a basic/user friendly distro like Ubuntu and all you really have to do is install. If you're a masochist, a developer, or a masochistic developer get a tougher distro like Gentoo. Funny thing as well, games with Linux support run better on Linux since it's such a great operating system on the software level. SteamOS is also free. Want Windows? Download the OS and put it on a disk or flash drive, install it on the new computer and enter the product key. Where do you get a product key? Don't buy it from a big box retail store for 100 bucks or likely more, you're getting gypped. You can buy 100% legit product keys online. r/microsoftsoftwareswap sells them for 20-25$ and the keys are straight from Microsoft

Also, all of those listings are from Amazon and are Amazon Prime eligible (for the other guy that replied to you that wants to complain about rebates/shipping/living next to a MicroCenter). You can find a lot of those parts cheaper and/or with free shipping. I recommend NewEgg. So you can do even better than the price I'm about to give you (which also means you can get better hardware for better performance):

Here's the itemized list with the prices: http://pcpartpicker.com/p/QBVRNG

$448.51 total for a PC that is massively better than current gen consoles. Drop the unnecessary DVD drive and the keyboard+mouse combo and the PC itself comes in at $402.93.

So... brand new parts from a large online retailer with a great support system. You can get even better deals on the parts if you checked other great online retailers like NewEgg. Ten years ago consoles absolutely made sense, but now leaps in hardware design have made better hardware cheaper and the tables have turned.

Does that "come close without cheating"?

Here's a few more kickers now that we have the hard price set:

AMD and Nvidia are about to launch a new line of GPUs, meaning current prices will drop (better performance at lower cost on that build I just gave you) and AMD is specifically focusing on lower/mid range market with higher performance and efficiency. It's going to be great for mainstream gaming rigs.

PC gaming is usually cheaper over time because Intel/Nvida/AMD don't charge development fees (they can't), neither can EVGA/ASUS or whoever makes the parts, neither can Microsoft. Steam takes a cut, but so do stores like GameStop. Stuff like that is why Steam can have massive sales consoles can only dream of and the developers can still profit from a sale. The only reason PC games are 60 dollars like their console equivalents is because it's the standard and they can "get away with it" (especially if you're Microsoft trying to expand Windows 10 and not alienate XBox), but they can make the same or more per sale at a lower cost.

PCs also have the largest game library of any platform and the massive free to play library that comes with it as well. And it's really free, not 'pay 50 a year for a subscription and get to play a game for a month' free

PC is, in theory, forever backwards compatible. Want to play CoD4? Don't shell out the money for Infinite Warfare, just install CoD4 and play on the servers PC still hosts. Games that came out upwards of 10 years ago can still be installed and run with no issue.

You don't have to double spend. No buying a console and a computer for work/school. Put your 300 dollar home computer and 400 dollar console prices together and you made a huge leap in budget to built a killer PC. You also get a much more versatile platform capable of running much more stuff and you get so much more control over your experience.

u/wfaulk · 7 pointsr/rocksmith

I agree that this should have been implemented in game, but I feel like a mini wireless keyboard would be easier and cheaper (assuming you don't already have a MIDI interface).

u/Congzilla · 7 pointsr/raspberry_pi

It looks like the real deal. The case looks like it was part of one of the CanaKits like this. This was a great accessory for it.

u/Robot_ninja_pirate · 7 pointsr/pcgaming

those Look Really Gaudy IMO

but for a better Budget setup that looks nicer too i would instead recommend the:

the Logitech GPro/102/203.
for your mouse it is a smaller mouse but fantastic build quality and a superior Senor definitly the best budget mouse you can get right now

for the keyboard either something like the MechanicalEagle Z-77 for TKL or the VicTsing Mechanical keyboard for Numpad users. these are cheaper Chinese board using Outemu Switches instead of Cherry making them more budget friendly but still certainly a lot better than the Rubber dome keyboard in the coolermaster bundle

edit: fixed the missing sentence

u/deprecatedcoder · 6 pointsr/magicleap

Hopefully it's more like $15.

u/Stifu · 6 pointsr/RetroPie

I have this one. It gets the job done, and I haven't gotten into any issues. I haven't tried any other similar keyboard.

u/Strider19 · 6 pointsr/raspberry_pi

I have one of these keyboards:
http://amzn.com/B00I5SW8MC

It is significantly wider than the keyboard on the radio. Maybe a few hours online would result in finding one similarly sized. I might have better luck butchering a cell phone with a qwerty keyboard, then wiring it to an arduino that can be a USB HID.

If I did create my own from scratch, I suspect I would have to design and order a printed circuit board. That would probably cost more than I have put into this project so far!

EDIT: just as an FYI- keyboard dimensions are: 94mm x 34mm

I've been using a bamboo keyboard for about a year, if you want a cheaper (though aesthetically different) option. You can get them with a wire, which is something I like in a keyboard.

u/the320x200 · 5 pointsr/oculus

The DK2 camera gives a much larger tracking space the further you get from the camera, with 5 feet away being the ideal minimum. However, many demos want you to press a key to reset your position once in place or to adjust settings, which is difficult to do without exceptionally long arms.

I went with this $15 bluetooth mini keyboard+touchpad originally intended for media center PC use. It just takes a couple minutes to learn where common keys are and you can then reset your position and control demos from afar which dramatically improves the available tracking space compared sitting at most desks where you're only a couple of feet from the camera.

This article really bugged me. It sounds like it was written by someone who has little to no experience using a computer as a media center. He points out all the problems of putting a PC in the living room and doesn't give any solutions, and goes on to say everyone needs to do it.

If you want a game console replacement, you're going to need a device at least as big as a console. If you want power, you need to pay the price and make sacrifices on size. The only good advice he gave was to use a laptop. Laptops are good media center solutions. Small, portable, reasonably powerful, lots of inputs.

ill second his opinion, i have a 4k tv. and 1080p looks pretty good and is satisfactory.
Get yourself a "Rii mini remote keyboard with mouse" it works awesome with the RP3 and kodi

i just ordered a fire tv box, which claims it can do 4k. but i haven't received it yet. so im not sure how 4k capable it is. i will find out in a few weeks once i get it.

u/iserane · 5 pointsr/GameDeals

Yeah, it mirrors your computer's screen exactly. So anything you can do on your computer, you can do on the TV. Any inputs you make on the PC would carry over so you can use your own keyboard / mouse / controller, but it has 3 USB ports built in to connect any device you want to it, you do need something at least.

I mostly use the steam controller for everything, including typing through the on-screen keyboard. I also have a Logitech M570 for critical mouse stuff, and I'm planning to get something like this for better typing.

If nothing else, you can just consider it a wireless HDMI cable, for $20.

u/migidymike · 5 pointsr/ShieldAndroidTV

The good news is, theres no shortage of after market remotes you can use with the shield. Here's a fairly cheap one I'm using which includes a keyboard and touchpad. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00Z81U3YY/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_liieBbN0GEJEB

u/SoSquidTaste · 5 pointsr/buildapcsales

Do you have this exact model? Only reason I ask is because Amazon reviews for it seem to show dodgy quality control.

u/D1G1T4LM0NK3Y · 4 pointsr/bapcsalescanada

FYI, these are knock-offs of the old version Rii i8 Keyboards

Newer Rii i8+ https://www.amazon.ca/dp/B00WQG6A8C/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_b91UCbZ3T1TVX

The above link is for the actual Rii i8+ which has the backlight (worth the extra $10 alone), which this white knock-off does not have. I have had two of these for about 3 or 4 years now and they're still perfect. Also have one of the originals without the backlight and it's sitting in a drawer somewhere because it's pretty much useless at night or in my movie room.

WARNING, if you buy a Rii remote on Amazon, make sure you buy it from Rii and only Rii. Some people have bought from third party sellers (same link, they just selected a different seller) and were sent cheap shitty knock-offs that broke after a while.

I honestly can say these remotes are freaking awesome (if you get the backlit one). Just wish it had an IR so I could teach it to turn on my projector and receiver.

u/killahKaZx · 4 pointsr/RetroPie
u/MonkeyDog453 · 4 pointsr/ffxiv

For the people who don't really like this keyboard. I have been using one of these for years on my ps3, originally got it to chat in pshome.

Still have to set the controller down to type, but the keyboard is so small you can just keep it in your lap and pick it up really fast to type. And the keys light up so if you play in the dark you can easily still use it.

Edit: It appears I have a slightly older model. I have the dinovo mini only difference is mine uses bluetooth while the newer cheaper one uses RF. Which means the old bluetooth one doesn't require a usb RF receiver to work with the ps3 or any other device that has bluetooth while the new one does since it doesn't use bluetooth.

> I'm a little disappointed to see the table top computers are mostly obsolete.

I guess I missed the memo

Vintage table top computers are just fine to play against for most of us mortals (if you're solidly above 2000, it's a little tougher), and you can get some for very cheap and in good condition on eBay. The Kaplan machines are a great option (SciSys turbo 16k plays at around 1450 elo, GK2000 (my personal nemesis) plays at around 1900 elo, GK2100 plays at around 2050 elo) and are very common.

There is one "new" table top computer on the market - Millenium Chess Genius/Pro. The Pro version is reaching 2300 elo in some tests. And the engine that powers it is the same Chess genius codebase that your phone app uses. Build quality is not as good as my favorite GK 2000, but at least someone is still making these.

> My plan is to mirror most of the me vs computer games over a real board. Is that how a lot of you do it?

Yes I do this, and I do this in games vs human players online (providing the time control is long enough to do this) as well.

> Not sure if something like hiarcs is worth it over lucus?

If you buy hiarcs I would recommend getting it with the Fritz interface.

When playing VS software engine, what I do is use a mini wireless keyboard (this), disable the board in my GUI, enlarge the score sheet and change the font such that it can be read at a long distance. Then I take the mini keyboard, input the moves in algebraic notation with it, and glance at the screen to see the engine reply. This minimizes computer distraction, being glued to the screen, and re-creates the feeling of taking notation in a tournament game as much as possible. Fritz GUI will also read it's moves aloud to you in speech, but I did not find that useful. I wanted to code something to use voice recognition API so that I could speak my moves, but didn't do it yet.

> Chess genius and shredder seem to be the best phone apps I've found so far.

For playing against, yes. For analysis, some stockfish variant is the way to go.

> However I'm hesitant to buy shredder as it appears to be abandoned. I like the ability to adjust the computer player by elo rating.

Shredder (along with HIARCS) is the most humanlike engine on the market and it's elo restriction is top notch. It's well worth the small price for the mobile version, but I'd consider the PC version too. I own both and use both, myself.

I don't think it is abandoned, but if it were, I wouldn't really fret too much -- it's pretty much perfect as it is.

Those specs are sub-par at best, and an absolute scam at worst. 8GB of RAM and 1TB of HDD for a $1700 machine?! There should be at least 16GB and an SSD for the OS at that price point.

In just 5 minutes I threw together an equivalent PC on Amazon for about half the price ($890: mobo, ram, gpu, cpu, hdd, display, mouse + keyboard, case.

I have the keyboard mouse combo from Cooler Master and this Razer Keyboard has similar housing based on what I saw when I removed a keycap on the Devastator.

If you go on amazon the first mice I see are $10 or less, or you could get this combo for about $13 for a mouse and keyboard combo. As previously mentioned, a cheap mouse and keyboard do the job and work the same way which more expensive and more premium products do. However, with more expensive mice and keyboards, you gain more features like RGB lighting or additional buttons, as well as better ergonomics and durability.

u/rouing · 3 pointsr/WritingPrompts

Expensive? I can get a keyboard and mouse for like 10$. Easy. And it can be wireless to. Keyboard and mouse is cheaper than a controller. If it wasn't intended for them to allow keyboard/mouse, why put the PS/2 drivers? Also, everyone has a computer so they all probably have a keyboard and mouse. Your points are not that convincing and stating that a kb+m combo is expensive kinda negates all credibility.

KB+M: 15$ https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B00B7GV802/ref=mp_s_a_1_4?ie=UTF8&qid=1469678708&sr=8-4&pi=SL75_QL70&keywords=keyboard+and+mouse

Controller: 50$ https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B00BGA9X9W/ref=mp_s_a_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1469678765&sr=8-1&pi=SL75_QL70&keywords=ps4+controller

That being said, you also lumped in actual modifications in there. There is a difference between plugging in a peripheral and actually modifying the code/peripheral to do things the manufacturer didn't intend for it to do. Keyboard and mouse is used on a computer and aimbots are still against rules on computer games so I don't see how an aimbot is relevant to an input peripheral. At all.

I've had a look at the devastator combo and it definitely looks interesting at that pricepoint. However, I would offer the following:

  1. What do you want from your keyboard? Do you want to improve your typing experience or looking to enhance your gaming? Either way, shelling out more money will get you better ergonomics (reduced strain, increased longevity, etc.) and in most cases a big increase in how long a board can stay with you.
  2. Have you considered mechanical switches? I switched a little while back and now I can't imagine buying rubber dome again. It's not because of elitism, it's simply a better experience for me all round and I now live in the knowledge that the board I have will be with me for some time.

There are some really decent boards at reasonable pricepoints scattered all about. The immediate ones that come to mind are:

  3. Corsair K65
  4. CM Storm Quickfire Rapid
  5. Rosewill RK-6000

Granted, these are above the pricepoint mentioned for the devastator but if you're willing, the ergonomics and quality of these boards should vastly outweigh it.

As mentioned, have a look at /r/mechanicalkeyboards once you have a feel for what you want in a keyboard. If you spend significant amount of time behind a computer in the first place (gaming + work can easily soak up dozens of hours a week) then investing in quality kit seems like a good idea.

If you think the Devastator set looks awesome and fits your needs, by all means go for it. Be sure to post pics and your experience when you get it!

EDIT: For reference, have a quick look at the reviews being posted on Amazon. Though not the most reputable source, they do seem to highlight a number of concerns for this combo with build quality and polish. Most notably the fact that the scroll lock key is used to turn the LEDs on and off on the keyboard but simultaneously also turns that function on. This may be a problem if you use programs that respond to that key being on. In addition, it appears that a) the keys are not particularly well-finished and may have some chips in them and b) when the LEDs are off you can't see the writing on the keys. Not a problem if you're a touch typist but if you tend to look at the board while typing you may have issues.

Could make something like this. http://i.imgur.com/KibyXD5.jpg

Could always swap out the LCD they used in the photo for one that sits on top of the GPIO pins.

GPIO LCD ~$18 http://www.amazon.com/OSOYOO-480x320-Display-Monitor-Raspberry/dp/B013E0IJSC/

Never used that LCD before, I have the Adafruit one. But the Ada one costs a bit more. =(

Keyboard ~$17 http://www.amazon.com/Rii-mini-X1-Raspberry-KP-810-10LL/dp/B00I5SW8MC/

PI just depends on which one you want.

SD Card depends on how much storage you want.

Battery depends on how long you want to use it. I have a 13000 mAh, http://www.amazon.com/Anker-Generation-High-Capacity-Fast-Charging-Techonology/dp/B00BQ5KHJW/ Running a headless PI with Camera board and USB Edimax wifi adapter doing timelapses at night. ~8 hours knocks off one light. So I assume it uses about 25% of the battery pack in that time.

$70 bucks is cutting it close. Other wise, as /u/trencher41 said, The Motorola Lapdock would be the only other cheap option I can think of.

I'm an ECE that got into Raspberry Pi about a month ago. I work in microelectronics (chip design), and wanted to use it to get back into larger scale electronics hacking and to do some more hardware oriented programming and projects.

As such, I had to basically reform my electronics gadget supply at the same time since I ditched my college collection a while back when moving to a new house.

Here's some of the key things I bought to go with my Pi that I felt I needed. I'm assuming you're like me and want to work on electronics hardware (lights, switches, etc).

  • Raspberry Pi B+ : I wanted the larger sized one with more memory and USB ports as the prototype environment. As I get stuff fully working, then I plan to buy an A+ for the implementation environment. I bought the Canakit Ultimate Starter Kit on Amazon
  • You'll want a good microSD card. I swapped out the 8GB one from the Canakit for a 16GB one since I want to store some data on the card for a project I have in mind
  • A case : I used the one from the Canakit
  • A USB keyboard. The Logitech K400 is nice (just make sure to pair it on a PC first), or the Rii i8 Mini work nice (I have both)
  • If you want an onboard display, look at the PiTFT from Adafruit. I used that for my initial setup, then set up my Pi to autostart a VNC server on boot and now I work without a display. If you don't want the PiTFT, you can use a TV or a monitor if it supports HDMI (or a regular monitor with an HDMI to DVI adapter).
  • If hardware hacking, a breadboard and cobbler board : You'll want a breadboard for prototyping electronics projects before soldering to a PCB, and a cobbler board to connect the pin header of the Raspberry to your breadboard. I used the one from the Canakit but there are various ones out there you can buy
  • To go with a breadboard, I suggest flexible breadboard wire. These or these would work.
  • If hardware hacking, you'll want LEDs, switched, and resistors/capacitors. I really like these resistors (they came bagged and labelled), the LEDs I started out with from Radio Shack, and for switches I really like these ones. They snap right into a breadboard. The caps I just got at RadioShack.
  • You may want to grab a multimeter as well. I have two myself with different functions (one for logic probing mainly).

Beyond those basic starter components, the rest is up to your imagination and what you want to do next. In my case, I plan to drive higher current components, so I'll be using optocouples and relays eventually. And I plan to make my own PCBs to snap onto the Raspberry, so I have PCBs, headers, and soldering stuff.

If you're new to the Raspberry, there's online resources out there. I also got this book off Amazon as a starter as well, which I've been coupling with online resources.

On the Arduino side, that's my next purchase since I may find it easier to have the software and server side of one of my projects on a Pi, and the hardware interface on an Arduino. I'm just going to get an R3 board to start since I have the rest of the stuff they usually include in a starter pack listed above.

This blog did a nice writeup comparing some Arduino R3 starter kits:
    https://www.pretzellogix.net/2014/10/09/three-arduino-starter-kits-compared-and-reviewed/

There are a lot of options -- to name a few:

Do the windows approach and set it to automatically open Kodi at boot. Or plex if you prefer that. This option gives you the most flexibility -- you don't ever have to touch a keyboard to open Kodi, but it gives you a lot more streaming options and the ability to use a web browser for things like Amazon Prime Video etc.
--bonus, you can create a launcher within kodi to open up Steam in Big Picture mode for light gaming as well

Or grab yourself a raspberry pi 3 and install OSMC on it (cheapest option, performance is "good enough")

Overall: Pick up a FLIRC usb adapter + a logitech harmony remote

I would also highly recommend a small keyboard for when you have to type to search a show, etc. -- I personally use one of these

Well, a lot of folks on r/mk (myself included) seem to be in agreement that Gateron switches are better than Cherry, and those are "knock-offs" so I dont think anyone will downvote you for not buying "branded" switches.

The few people who have posted about their red dragon boards seem to like them, and as far as backlight goes, that aesthetic is up to you.

What country are you trying to buy this keyboard in? If you search mechanical keyboards on amazon, you see a bunch of cheaper options that do have numpads. If you want a mechanical numpad, jellycomb makes one for $20 USD.

I do not know what you use your computer for but unfortunately most backlit keyboards are geared to gamers. I've never used any of these keyboards but they are from respected manufactures. If I were you I'd read through a couple reviews on each to get a better understanding of what to expect from the keyboard.

Cooler Master Storm Devastator w/ mouse $29.99

This one is .2" longer, .4" narrower, .4" taller than your current keyboard

Corsair Raptor k30 $39.99

This one is .9" longer, .9" wider, .4" taller.

If you were to up your budget $10.

SteelSeries Apex Raw $49.99

2.97" longer, 2.5" wider, 1.05" taller.

I have used this one and I can say that I didn't care for the keys but I do use a mechanical board so take that with a grain of salt.

If you were to up your budget $25-30. (At this point it might be better to start looking at low end mechanicals.)

Corsair Raptor k40 $59.99

1.8" longer, 2.5" wider, .8" taller

Logitech Illuminated Ultrathin $59.99

I don't think the dimensions for this one are right because Amazon says it's 3 inches tall but it's sold as an ultrathin keyboard?

Microsoft SideWinder x4 $68.80

2.1" longer, 2.4" wider, 1.4" taller

A lot have voice recognition and a microphone in the remote now, and even if not, with predictive search you usually dont have to type more than two or three letters anyway.

I have a media server in my back office, but that streams to Rokus hooked up to the living room and kitchen TVs via Plex. Plus i can use the app on my phone instead of the remote and i can type on that full keyboard.

I did get this for my Steamlink tho. https://smile.amazon.com/Rii-Wireless-Keyboard-Touchpad-Control/dp/B00I5SW8MC/

I have that same wireless keyboard/touchpad. The range is awful, but it was cheap.

Lots of people strap them to their forearms. I'm building a wearable pi, and I'm just going to put magnets on it to hold it in place when I'm not using it, so I can pull it out and type while holding it when I need it.

They're cheap, and they work really well.

u/ase1590 · 2 pointsr/SteamOS

I've used ubuntu just fine for my living room PC with no problem. scaled up the font size a bit, then just had steam boot up with Ubuntu. Get yourself one of these keyboards and you're golden.

browsed the web and watched videos on it, then used in-home streaming from steam to play games off of my main PC.

u/praetor- · 2 pointsr/htpc

Some suggestions for keyboard/mice:

Lenovo N5902. Goes on sale regularly.

Logitech K400

Generic keyboard/touchpad remote. There are many slight variants on this.

I've found that due to the size/shape/content of my living room, a wireless receiver plugged into my HTPC doesn't work 100% reliably. I've connected a USB extension cable to the back of my HTPC and run it behind things and under my couch to give me the best reception. Generally you can go up to 15 feet; any longer than that and you need a powered extension.

If you have a Logitech Harmony remote, I highly recommend the OVU4003/00 (RC6) USB IR reciever. Once set up with Windows and the Harmony remote, it works with XBMC/Kodi out of the box. This receiver was branded as HP/Dell/Gateway/Philips and probably many more. A Flirc is another option but it is ugly (IMO) and more expensive.

Regarding hardware, if you aren't gaming you don't need a lot. When using older gear the most important thing is video hardware acceleration. For Intel machines, you need something with at least GMA 4500 (Q45 chipset) graphics or later, and for AMD you need something with at least a 760G chipset. This hardware dates back to 2008/2009. Dedicated graphics cards should be at least a Radeon HD 2600 or a GeForce 8500. These cards date back to 2006/2007. CPUs are a grey area, but any mainstream dual core CPU (Athlon X2, Core 2 Duo) from 2007+ should be able to handle most everything. My first HTPC had an AMD Athlon X2 5000+ and it's still working just fine with W7 and Kodi.

If you want to game (and don't want to use a device like the DOKO), you'll need to find a quiet case that supports full length video cards. There are a bunch available, and I'm not sure if this has changed in the last 2-3 years, but the vast majority of HTPC cases large enough to support full size gear and M-ATX motherboards are simply too long to fit in a standard A/V rack or TV stand. The only exceptions I am aware of are the Silverstone GD05 and GD04. I'd be willing to bet that Silverstone has some other cases that will work also.

Additionally, you'll want to find a PSU, case fans and CPU cooler that are quiet and efficient. The best resource for this is http://www.silentpcreview.com/.

Lastly, if your A/V receiver has only S/PDIF audio inputs (no HDMI) and you want to play games in 5.1 surround sound, you're going to need to find either a sound card or motherboard with an S/PDIF output that supports DTS-Connect and/or Dolby Digital Live. Motherboards stopped coming with this around 2008 (AFAIK) and the cheapest option to get it in an add-on card is the Sound Blaster Z.

You could also look for keyboards that fold that are designed to be used with things like phones.

I have two different ones that I use and like:

This one is great for an htpc that doesn't need a keyboard:

http://smile.amazon.com/Ortek-Windows-Infrared-Receiver-Ultimate/dp/B00224ZDFY?

It has great range and a solid selection of buttons. No tab button, but it is well made and works well. The mouse moves a little slowly, but I haven't found a remote I like better.

This one is good if you want or need a full keyboard:

http://smile.amazon.com/Rii-Wireless-Keyboard-Rechargable-Raspberry/dp/B00WQG6A8C?

I had the original model, and the range was terrible and it would often need to be turned off and on to connect. This new model works great though, although the way it goes to sleep fairly quickly is a little annoying. Reconnects quite fast though and has great battery life.

u/Solo59YF · 2 pointsr/simracing

Nice setup! Hard work pays off eh! Just want to say, have you thought of using one of those mini keyboards??? Imo anyone who has a sim racing rig should simply use a mini keyboard. https://www.amazon.ca/dp/B00WQG6A8C/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_sNnWDbHXYJZ2Y

I've been using one for years. Can't deal with the hassle of a large keyboard and awkwardly trying to use a mouse while sitting in the rig. They are only 20-30 bucks on amazon. Couldn't recommend them enough.

I received the matricom G-box two weeks ago and it took a few minutes to find a decent video set up Exodus on it. But it's been absolutely great with netflix-esque quality and audio that syncs up spot on. I also bought a Rii Bluetooth remote and I couldn't be happier with the whole package. All AMC, HBO plus many more shows at my fingertips.

u/mrtallyman2 · 2 pointsr/buildapcsales

I've got 2 of the Rii Brand ones, I like the 2.4ghz one because it reads instantly, I've used it on laptops, desktops, Rapsberry Pi (Retropi) and even my steamlink! The battery lasts a few months with sparse use, and with heavy use probably about a month. Also the backlit keyboard is awesome, and i've never had any issues with the buttons. Just my two cents!

Edit: I've also used a bluetooth one with a Phone, Raspberry Pi, as well as a dongle attached to a laptop, It works well, but takes a little longer to setup and connect, where as the 2.4ghz one is plug and play.

u/Quaglar · 2 pointsr/financialindependence

It hits me in waves. Buildapc has a logical increments guide for how to scale things up from a reasonable price.

Pros to desktop: you can upgrade components

Cons to desktop: Power consumption for regular tasks is stupid relative to most efficient laptops. That said, in the winter, this added power consumption just turns into slightly more expensive heat generation.

One thing you could consider is a reasonable desktop now with a good cpu close to you television. If you run a hdmi to your TV, you can watch internet stuff from your couch and cancel cable. For added frugal luxury you can add a wireless computer remote.

Any that mention 2.4Ghz will come with a small dongle that will need to be connected to your Android TV device via USB.

Any that only mention bluetooth will not use a dongle.

Right now I'm considering these two, personally:

On criteria that they are purely bluetooth with no dongle required, are small, backlit, have touchpads. and only cost about 20 dollars.

I have one of these working with Bluetooth, but haven't used it that much because I haven't been using my Pi with the TV set much:

(With Backlit) iPazzPort Bluetooth Mini Wireless Keyboard and Touchpad Mouse Combo for Raspberry Pi 3 and Android Smart TV / XBMC KP-810-21SBL (Black) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B015J6TEN8/

Seems to work fine except that it likes to go to sleep to save power and takes a second to wake back up if you leave it sitting.

Others report mouse jitter when using BT so I'm not really sure how well this works for other use cases like a full size keyboard with trackpad.

u/sharltocopes · 2 pointsr/raspberry_pi

I've had it about a week now, the stylus it came with works well, but I'm using a Bluetooth keyboard/mouse combo like this one for it because it can be hard to double-click on the screen with the stylus and I don't want to crack it by pressing too hard.
It's a very responsive screen otherwise!

A few things that I would change:

  • More storage. I've gone from 120gb to 240gb to 500gb SSD, and I have a total of 4TB of HDD storage, external and internal. For example, you wouldn't be able to install Final Fantasy XV in its 4K texture mode on that drive at all. And a lot of games are in the 50-80gb range, meaning you'll only be able to install one game at a time.
  • There is absolutely no point in buying a liquid cooler. Spending excessive amounts of money on cooling is only relevant if you plan to overclock the cheese out of the CPU, and even then liquid coolers are mostly for aesthetics.
  • Get a better power supply. Get something that's 500W or 600W, just do that you have some overhead, and get something other than the cheapest Corsair CX stuff. Get something from EVGA or Be Quiet!, if you want to be sure.
  • Do not buy a mechanical keyboard. Mechanical keyboards are a massive luxury, and very dependent on individual preferences. Trust me, I bought a cheap mechanical keyboard and I regret the switch choice I got. Same applies to the mouse: Mice are very dependent on comfort, so buying an expensive mouse if you don't even know whether you will use all the features or like the shape is a bad idea. Again, trust me on this, I've gone through like 6 gaming mice by now. Rather, buy something more utilitarian, like this good mouse+keyboard combo

tl;dr: Spend less on keyboard, mouse, CPU cooler. Spend more on storage and PSU. If you've got leftover after that, upgrade to a Ryzen 1600.

I went here /r/buildapcforme to get advice for my build.

I'd also like to say that while gaming gear like special keyboards and mice are popular, there's no shame in using a simple mouse and keyboard set. I'm using this thing, found it cheap at the store, and never ran into any issues with input lag or anything playing games.

That said, If you do play online games with a voice chat, you may want to spend a little for a better mic.

Oh, and a boobie mouse pad might be good to consider, I have to deal with relatives, so mine is plain black with no tiddies, but these types of mouse pad are great

u/RelayTech · 2 pointsr/AndroidTV

Not really, you can get a set like the logitech wave that pairs the mouse and keyboard to one receiver, or a keyboard with a trackpad build in

u/pr0grammer · 2 pointsr/hardware

I'm a fan of Logitech's Wave keyboard, which you can get in the MK550 combo. I find it much nicer to type on than a standard flat one, and the combo also includes a nicer mouse (it adds forward/back buttons and horizontal scrolling to the MK520's mouse). The keyboard isn't backlit, but that's not much of an issue on desktop keyboards.

It's $3 more on Amazon, and I'd say it's very much worth the extra money.

u/jgrowl · 2 pointsr/AskTechnology

I can't say with confidence, but I think you would have a better chance with a powered usb hub. I don't think there is anything that would prevent a hub from working but it would probably largely depend on your specific hardware.

My only experience has been with RF LINK 2-Port HDMI USB KVM Switch

It actually has two extra usb ports besides the mouse/keyboard.

If you just need one extra port, another option might be to pick up a keyboard/mouse combo that goes through a single usb connection (Specifically, we use the Logitech Wireless Combo Mk520 With Keyboard and Mouse with our switch.

I might have a powered USB hub around here somewhere that I could test with my kvm just to report to you if it works, but it might be buried too deep for me to find... and again it might just depend on the specific hardware.

If it were me, I'd probably just try a powered USB hub since you can pick one up fairly cheap.

I actually started using a remote a while back for my first HTPC, and haven't really been able to consider any of my builds as complete until I have a remote to accompany it. While I can't really tell you what would be best, since every situation, PC, user, and budget may require something a little bit different, my two current HTPCs use the Lenovo N5902, and the Logitech Wireless MiniController.

Even something simple like the HP WMC media remote works wonders, and offers all of the functionality (albeit for compatible systems) of a higher priced device for a fraction of the cost.

How good is this keyboard? General rating or comments would be cool. Is Cherry MX Red good for typing long essays/notes? I also have this: https://www.amazon.com/Logitech-Mechanical-Keyboard-Tactile-High-Speed/dp/B009C98NPY -- Which I use for gaming/general purpose.

I wanted to start using my noppoo again cause I have a few long essays coming up

  2. I dont particularly like the feel of the standard keys that it comes with and was thinking about swapping them out for new keycaps. What are my options in texture for a full set of keys for this keyboard? Color scheme recommendation or is there any central hub where I can see all of my options?

By default, F1 to F5 are used to target self or party players. They're definitely not necessary (I personally never use them, rebinded target party1/2 to scroll up and scroll down).

I don't know if it's available in blue switches(definitely black and red), but you might want to check Noppoo Choc Mini 84 USB which is also includes the function keys. I don't own it, but I've also been shopping mechanical keyboards and it caught my attention.

Okay... but what makes you think that most people don't have a functional, if basic, mouse and keyboard?

>Monitor

Are you serious...? People can still use their TV for gaming you know. There's no evidence to suggest that most people don't use their TVs when PC Gaming, so...

Anyway, IF they were to get a monitor...

Frankly though, the more logical thing to buy to use your PC on a TV would be this.

So if we go by the "having to get a monitor" route (Assuming that A. They won't use the PC on their TV, and B. They don't have a 16:9 monitor that runs at 60hz), then the build in total would be $520.

But without the monitor, and just going with a controller on their TV, then the cost comes out $447.

  • 4590 for $160 is a fantastic deal (all hail MicroCenter). 4 cores will be much appreciated in Photoshop.
  • Cheap, reliable motherboard.
  • 8GB of RAM- typically sufficient, and at this budget 16GB is a bit of a stretch. You can always pop in another 8GB stick in the future if you need more.
  • MX100 is the best price/performance SSD right now, and 256GB is a really nice spot. 128GB is a bit more economical ($60), so if you want you can drop down.
  • WD Blue is the standard 1TB HDD, and is pretty reliable.
  • The 270X will pretty easily handle your gaming needs. You could consider dropping down to a 270, 265, or 260X- look at some benchmarks if you want to drop down.
  • Source 210 is a good case at this price point- solid airflow and decent build quality.
  • Pretty good budget PSU- only 80+ certification, but it's got decent quality. 430W is enough.
  • Well reviewed 1080p monitor, seems to be pretty good.
  • AmazonBasics provides alright peripherals at this price. Can't really fit in a mechanical keyboard/gaming mouse here, so this'll have to do- it's really not bad.

How would they know that? That's very serious.

One bit of advice: Install Linux for them. Seriously, it is worth it. There is no way to get a Windows PC safe if one of the user is incapable of using a PC. There are almost no attacks targeting Linux, and you do not need much skill to configure it. It is very easy to install Ubuntu, at least as easy as installing Windows.

The USB ports are on the top, not the front, hope that's okay. The build has a fast dual core processor and will use its integrated graphics, for the usage you described it will be more than fine. 250GB SSD for storage. Otherwise that is a nice small build that has Wifi.

You can add any external drive you want, like https://www.amazon.com/Elements-Portable-External-Drive-WDBUZG0010BBK-WESN/dp/B00CRZ2PRM/.

I'd get a keyboard and mouse set, like https://www.amazon.com/AmazonBasics-Wired-Keyboard-Mouse-Bundle/dp/B00B7GV802/. https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16824009513 would work as display.

Overall that is closer to $600 than $400, but you get modern and fast components for that.

Mumbai is a great place to assemble a computer. Lamington Road is on par with Nehru Place, even better perhaps. Plus, you'll be able to get stuff delivered to your place (if you rent your own) from PrimeABGB with COD.

Though it doesn't make sense to lug peripherals across India (especially with GST being uniform) I can't resist sharing this -

AmazonBasics Wired Keyboard and Wired Mouse Bundle Pack https://www.amazon.in/dp/B00B7GV802/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_w-a.AbGNNRXVY

On sale for 0.8K right now. And while they aren't the best in the business, Amazonzbasics gets the job done. In fact, better than Zebronics I'd say.

Thank you frand, and best wishes for your GPU hunt as well. I'm planning on going for a GPU upgrade about a year from now, so your experience will be instructive.

For emulators you want faster single core performance.

You can look for HTPC cases. Silverstone makes some nice ones that fit in entertainment centers. I've got a Silverstone GD06 for my living room HTPC. I also game on it with an xbox 360 controller.

Bluray players for Windows suck. There are no free ones so you'll have to pay for one. Sometimes your bluray drive may come with software bundled to do this.

You'll still need something like an air mouse to navigate the OS when not using the xbox controller. Or just a wireless keyboard + trackpad.

u/blakezo · 2 pointsr/buildapc

You can pick up a mini keyboard on Amazon for ~20$. Also try chrome remote desktop for shutting off you computer from an app on your phone.

It works well. The home button doesn't work. However, the script like "e" button directly below the home button actually works as a home button. That "e" button can invoke firestarter and the sleep/mirror/settings menu. Magnifying search button brings up text search. Media D-pad on left works (not volume). Two finger scroll on trackpad works.

Edit: no menu button like remote

I haven't tried it. I have been using this: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00B9996LA/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o04_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

I love this thing. It doesn't need any driver downloads, connects quickly, very quick charge, really long battery life. I never remember to turn this thing off, but it has an auto off feature. you just press any key to wake it back up. It has a surprisingly good range too. it's just not as pretty as that one though.

Skip fake coin door with buttons, just do a real coin door at that point. Easy to wire one up to an ipac or similar depending on what you are doing for an encoder. If you don't want to do the real coin door, you can also just put a yellow button next to each players start button for coin.

Pause, reset, and menu shouldn't have there own buttons. They can be done with shift keys and would be much cleaner looking. For example, holding 1 player start and pressing player 2 start can exit a game. Then you can have holding player 1 start and pulling down on the stick can pause. Reset is so rarely needed that you wouldn't want a button for it, but it is easy enough to add a shift key for it if you would like.

I've played a lot of video pinball, and I do enjoy it for the most part. I have been spoiled by playing it on setups designed exclusively for it however. Virtual pinball really needs to played on a big vertically oriented screen to get the right effect. Any real pinball machine completely outclasses virtual so just be aware that those are easy enough to find. With those things in mind I would say skip the pinball stuff for now.

How you want to do your sound setup will best determine how to deal with volume. Some folk use an amp and home theater rear speakers, or car audio speakers. If you were to go that route I would say just hide the actual knob somewhere that is easy to access. Maybe up near the power switch that you would want to mount near the top right side of the machine, above and behind the marquee. Some decent 2.1 pc speakers come with a volume knob that could easily be mounted in that spot as well. If you are determined to do it in software, you can use shift keys as mentioned earlier.

Here is the controversial opinion: Don't bother 6 buttons per player. I find that while many of those 6 button fighting games are great, they just don't get played enough to warrant all of those buttons. If you need to scratch that fighting game itch you can go with something Neo Geo, like Last Blade 2, Samurai Showdown 2, or Garou. All of which are amazing games by the way.

I would also say don't bother with a keyboard and mouse tray. Just adds another level on complexity that isn't needed. Just use a wireless mouse keyboard combo and throw it on top of the cab when you aren't using it. I personally use one of these: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00B9996LA/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&psc=1

u/kiwiandapple · 2 pointsr/buildapcforme

so we got £240 for a monitor, keyboard and mouse. I can work very well with this. I will give you a few options. Going from low end of the budget to the higher end. You have all kinds of options.

But first! Peripherals are all very hard to suggest, if we don't have enough information. So I picked the ones that I find will work in most cases.
But there are a lot of things we need to know before we can suggest the right setup. But anyway, here is the list. No I won't explain to much why I picked them. I did went for these because I think they will work for "most" people. But if you got the time to answer the questions, I will have a better idea if my suggestion will work for you.

u/ILostMyMojo_ · 2 pointsr/buildapcforme

This is amazing. I was going to update it to include that the 700 was without the monitor so this works out. I just have a few questions about the build:

  1. Is it worth it to upgrade to the i5-6600 for $40 more? Would this make a big difference in terms of editing maybe or gaming?
  2. I was leaning towards the GTX 1060. I know it's high in demand right now, but would there be more availability in a month? But if I was able to get it, what's the price difference and is it worth it over the RX 480? Also which brand because there are a lot.
  3. For the monitor I was thinking the HP Pavilion 21.5-Inch IPS LED HDMI VGA Monitor https://www.amazon.com/dp/B015WCV70W/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_JHsMxb3JVZAPX
I'm not sure what the big differences are or if there are any. I think that the HP aesthetically looks nicer
  4. Is this a solid keyboard? For some reason the way it's designed, it's look really cheap and kind of over the top. My friend has a Cooler Master Devastator - LED Gaming Keyboard and Mouse Combo Bundle (Blue Edition) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00DKXXAAQ/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_AstMxbMHYQ6GA that he said he would sell to me for $10. Idk too much a out keyboards so as long as it looks simlle and works well, I'm happy.
  5. Do you think a wireless card is necessary? I'm not sure if I'll have access to Ethernet(probably will).
  6. My old gaming laptop has two 512GB hard drives. Would it be smart to snag one of them? Is it possible to attach it to this computer?

    EDIT: Aesthetically

I was planning on spending $220 for mech keyboard and nice mouse when building but ended up buying the Cooler Master Storm Devastator keyboard/mouse set for $30.

The money I saved there allowed me to not cut corners on anything else while giving me ample time to consider if I really needed a top end keyboard while playing just fine with this one.

They come in red or blue LED and I bought mine from Amazon on sale for $30 but it's now $40 there. This link has it for $28.62 and I think you'd be hard pressed to find a better bang for buck. I'm no pro but it works just fine for me.

Okay, here are two budget keyboard + mouse combos that probably exceed standard consumer hardware in performance even if they are a little dodgy compared to better brands:

http://www.amazon.com/eSPORTS-COMMANDER-Ilumination-Keyboard-KB-CMC-PLBLUS-01/dp/B00VEU6LYE

They each cost around $30 which is $10-20 less than the cost of a controller (yes I'm aware that you don't need a 2nd one but seriously, who owns a console and doesn't have at least 2 controllers?)

u/ipt_striker · 2 pointsr/buildapc

Looking at a gaming mouse. I bought the CM Storm Devastator keyboard & mouse set a while ago. I'm wondering how much better is something like a Logitech G502?

I know the G502 is one of the best (if not the best) on the market, but I'm just wondering how much better it is than what I have and is it worth spending $70 on it when I already have a mouse.

congrats on the setup completion! The curvature on that mouse is sexyyy. good luck streaming!

I would be interested in the Xsplit license! I believe mine is set to expire some time this year, a little extra extension would be nice. :)

My current keyboard/mouse setup is the Cooler Master Devastator combo pack, blue. I got it when i built my PC last year and had a budget to stick to, so just got a combo. It definitely works fine and the lights are cool! blue is my favorite color too. im content with it, but of course could always be better.

I would definitely love to eventually upgrade. I have my eyes set on the Razer BlackWidow Chroma Stealth Silent RGB keyboard and the Logitech G502 Proteus Spectrum mouse. so expensive. eventually, eventually. T___T

If you're on a budget like I was, Coolermaster peripherals are amazing. I recently upgraded from a really sketchy $20 chinese kb/m set to the $30 CM Storm Devastator kb/m combo, it's fantastic. I love how the keys are raised, almost like a mechanical style. And the backlighting on such an inexpensive set is impressive. I could never really justify myself spending hundreds of dollars on peripherals so I definitely appreciate CM's offering.

u/ruskininja · 1 pointr/gaming

Not much choices for a wireless keyboard at that range. You could get a Logitech ergonomic keyboard. Not many options out there at this price range and wireless that are quality built. If you could bump up your budget, you could get a XArmor U9W wireless mechanical keyboard for a little under $110. Other than that, it's just generic wireless membrane keyboards at your price range. May I ask why it has to be wireless? Couch gaming setup?

u/thatshowitis · 1 pointr/hardware

I would then get or make a laptop stand that opens and elevates your laptop screen, but that's a viewing height/desk space preference.

If you want something with a little smaller form factor, the Logitech MK520 is incredible. Battery will last for 6 months or more easily. I've had both and a few more models from Logitech, along with a couple from Microsoft, and these 2 above are by far the best I've had.

I would highly encourage checking out some professional workstation laptops - so much better built than gaming notebooks, will last a very long time.

Thinkpad P51 is a great start. I'd configure it with an SSD (or add one yourself if possible).

Or, if you're looking for something cheaper and don't mind a 940MX, the T470p is also an excellent option. Still has a quad-core for editing. I'd configure this with the 7820HQ and whatever else you feel is necessary.

I think the wood to use would depend greatly on the the design. If you're going for an all-in-one design that is common, where the mouse buttons are part of the upper surface (last link), you'll want something that has good bending/springiness to it.
There are some wooden mice already on the market and you could look at their designs to see what you like and don't:

Logitech Dinovo Mini

I've used this in conjunction with my Harmony One for about 5 years, and it works very well most of the time, sometimes the trackpad gets a little wonky, but i attribute that to greasy fingers.

It's very small but works very well for putzing around on the net from your couch. Plus it closes up so when it gets dropped between the cushions it wont have any erroneous buttons presses.

It also has the WAF. I dont have to install something on my wife's phone, or make sure either one of our batteries on our phone are not dead.

u/swharper79 · 1 pointr/htpc

Been using the Logitech Mini for about 5 years now. Full keyboard and mousepad the size of my hand. I love it.

u/chazwhiz · 1 pointr/htpc

Harmony One remote and Dinovo Mini keyboard/mouse.

Do you have your Plex somehow feeding to XBMC or do they just watch the same folders?

u/XANi_ · 1 pointr/learndota2

It looks like they fixed that in razer tartarus, at least from the picture hand rest looks a bit smaller. but lack of regulation is definitely a bad thing.

When I used n52 I just used 2 rightmost buttons of lowest row as modifiers and it was working fine, however I feel that for DOTA it just have too few keys.

I used logitech g13 for a bit, but to be honest it wasnt that much more ergonomical (i preferred n52) than just a good keyboard and this one have f1-f12 keys close to rest of the keys so it can be used without moving fingers too much

u/GSlayerBrian · 1 pointr/AskReddit

It's not a no-name :'(

And mine was $67. They retailed for around $85 in the US when I ordered it, but nowhere had any in stock with blues. So I bought three of them via Taobao from China. Used one myself, let my mother use the other, and flipped the last one on ebay for a small profit.

Also one with Reds is only $104.99 with free shipping on Amazon.

Not to mention it is the only USB keyboard you'll ever find with true NKRO.

And a big reason I selected the Choc Mini is because of its layout. Three things in particular:

  • It situates the F-row directly above the num row.
  • It has dedicated arrow keys while still retaining a tiny footprint.
  • There's no uneven spacing between any of the keys.

As far as I've found, there are no other keyboards which have all three of those features.
u/scrogglez · 1 pointr/wow

Also op - start off small if you have to. If you are getting stressed , start with 1-3 macros and work up from there.

Future leveling, NEVER EVER click, always keybind your abilities. So when you hit max level, you won't have to learn it all.

If you have anymore questions, ask me and i'll help you out bro.

edit:

ALSOOOO for the heck of it, they make smaller keyboards ex: http://www.amazon.com/Noppoo-Mechanical-Gaming-Keyboard-Switches/dp/B0091QOCNA

Might help if you have issues or smaller hands but i'd only get them once you've given it a few months of playing.

u/Lysdexics · 1 pointr/MechanicalKeyboards

I'm using the noppo choc mini to type this, and absolutely love it.

It's durable, slick, and just looks good. Plus, it's on sale right now (i got mine for like $130)

u/AngryFace4 · 1 pointr/buildapc

A keyboard with the same layout as the [Noppo Choc Mini](https://www.amazon.com/Mechanical-Gaming-Keyboard-Cherry-Switches/dp/B0091QOCNA) that is NOT 10-key-less (i.e. includes a number pad)

This product does not exist anywhere. A keyboard where the F keys line up with the Number keys but also has a number pad.

u/steakoutwhoa · 1 pointr/NoStupidQuestions

Oh, I see. Thanks, but one more thing. Do you have any recommendations as far as keyboards go? I was thinking of getting this one. But, since it's my first "real" keyboard, I figured there may be brands I'm unaware existed.

u/imperiouslol · 1 pointr/worldofpvp

As far as mice, I used to use a naga back in cata/mop when binds were getting to be like 60+ including arena macro's and such. However, since blizz got rid of most abilities I have ditched the naga and I just use the SteelSeries Rival - very comfortable gaming mouse with two buttons on the side. I highly recommend this mouse, plenty of players use naga but for me personally it's an overwhelming amount of potential binds at this point.

Imo the best mmo keyboard to help out with some additional binds is the noppoo choc mini with cherry mx red switches. It's a mini keyboard and the F keys are located directly above the numbered keys so they're great for binds - after I ditched my naga I picked up this keyboard and those F keys are plenty to be able to comfortably bind everything without having the naga overkill.

I hope this helps and if you have any other questions please let me know!

u/DemCSGO · 1 pointr/MechanicalKeyboards

I'm looking for an 84 key keyboard, I prefer the F keys to line up perfectly with the number keys. Does anyone know any models that look similar to
https://www.amazon.com/Mechanical-Gaming-Keyboard-Cherry-Switches/dp/B0091QOCNA
or
https://www.amazon.com/DREVO-Gramr-Tenkeyless-Mechanical-Switch-White/dp/B075F1DB5X/ref=pd_lpo_vtph_lp_t_3?_encoding=UTF8&refRID=GPR8JFKQ0CQM5CYW8A3V&th=1

I cannot find any keyboards that use MX cherry switches, price isn't as much of an issue and i'm hesitant to go with the Drevo model as there isn't a Red switch alternative and am unfamiliar with the brand of switch

My Noppoo died and the seller is no longer in business and it was the best keyboard i've ever used, I'd appreciate any replies

I'm aware of the Poker models and such however they eliminate the F keys completely and I would enjoy having those FeelsBadMan

u/VirusIV · 1 pointr/MechanicalKeyboards

I LOVE vortex and i use the Poker 3 but I really dislike the layout of the Race 3 its not what im looking for I want like the layout of the noppoo mini https://www.amazon.com/Mechanical-Gaming-Keyboard-Cherry-Switches/dp/B0091QOCNA or the plum nano with no spacing between the keys </3 I cant find either of those keyboards though for purchase and I can not find the layout of that keyboard anywhere

u/ujtugos85nx · 1 pointr/DotA2

I used a keyboard like this for years, so the function keys on that Thermaltake look wayyy too outta the way for my tastes.

The best I've found is this Noppoo Choc Mini. Don't know that I've got the green to drop on it, though. Probably just a "save up" sort of thing, considering any other nice keyboard would probably wind up being half-way to the Noppoo anyway.

My wife took to mouse and keyboard like it was nothing. I have a lot of trouble with it outside of RTS/MMO etc. I grew up with a controller though and she only had a few years of muscle memory to retrain.

If you have to sit far away from your computer just pick up a cheap Logitech or Microsoft wireless USB keyboard, nothing fancy. You can pull that off for under $30.00 on Amazon. If you sit closer try a wired set and it might be a bit cheaper + no batteries.

The lapdocks and such you see advertised by Razor, Logitech, Corsair etc. are expensive. Don't buy one if you don't know if you'll stick to a keyboard setup. You can get the "feel" for mouse and keyboard just fine on a plain old setup and spring for better stuff when sales come along if you want to stick with it.

For setup and end table and chair might do for a temporary/trial period. I've used a chair and living room table to play PC games on my TV downstairs. Obviously, much easier if you game at a desk.

The AmazonBasics keyboard and mouse combo is on sale and cheaper than just the keyboard. You can do a search on Amazon for more options, just search for media keyboard or multimedia keyboard

u/AUnusedUsername · 1 pointr/pcmasterrace

ok,so assuming your $40 budget goes either way, IMO the mouse is more important, so I would get the $30 logitech g203 prodigy, it's nothing special but it's sensor is great and it will last you a long time, for a keyboard you can get really anything wired, as long as you can get used to it, this amazonbasics one comes with a mouse for 15 bucks, you can get the keyboard alone but that takes 3-5 months to ship so you can throw that mouse on a laptop or something. the keyboard wont be the greatest experience, but you don't have anything better now. alternatively, if the input lag is only on the mouse and the keyboard is fine, then you could splurge on the g502 proteus spectrum, an rgb mouse (for right handed people only!) that I can proudly and unironically say is the greatest mouse of all time.

>Other necessary items such as a legal copy of Windows

I'll assume they want windows and a legal copy for that matter /r/microsoftsoftwareswap

>a good M+KB or controller

Assuming they don't already have some lying around, you can pick up cheap M+KB pairs, here or here or like this or like this or cheaper or slightly more expensive ones like this or this.
Or (if you can) go to your local shop and pick up a cheap pair for $5 each (and that's here in Australia).
And all of that's also assuming you want it brand new.

A controller isn't necessary, but if they really want them, assuming you want new and analog sticks, this or this would suffice.

>Even miscellaneous things like cables, filters

They come with the gear you buy, GPU's come with the needed output cable (whether that be DVI/VGA/HDMI/DP) even then, local shops have them for a couple dollars...except DP which is expensive for some reason. PSU always comes with it's own cables and filters come with the case as well.

>mouse-pad

You can pick up a nice cheap one for a dollar (or less if you're that desperate)

>thermal paste, zip-ties

Already on your CPU fan, which comes with your cpu, unless you buy it second hand or buy a (very expensive) high end one. Zip-ties are an unnecessary optional item (cases these days have notches etc for cables and even then you don't "need" them) that cost a dollar for 100.

And maybe having the PS3 controller on standby... But that right there is definitely an option, I bet I even have a chat pad and controller laying around somewhere. Thanks man!

u/RobotBuddha · 1 pointr/xbmc

So far this has been my favorite. The mouse side of things is fairly responsive, the arrow keys are placed in a good spot to use as the primary method of navigation in xbmc. The back space key, ideally would be one step higher up. But it's still not too bad.

I think the biggest downside for you would be lack of keyboard lighting. Otherwise I love the thing. And it's only $15.

That said, I have another similar looking one. And it's terrible. The keys are stiff, and the reception is outright terrible. I swear it struggles at anything over a distance of four feet. So avoid the black one, and go for the white if you're interested.

u/SomeIndividualNotMe · 1 pointr/fireTV

I think that paste may be from the thread he mentions there. I can get the keyboard to try and pair, but it won't allow me to input the code and push enter. I think pressing the power button for 10 seconds from off should put it in pairing mode, but from there you're basically screwed.

I've played around with plex in the past. The thing is, if I already need a PC running to be the server, what's the point of putting a client on another machine.

It would be awesome of have a media front end (or app) like plex on the PS4.

I'm definitely heading down the route of media center. Looking at either of these keyboards to control it.

u/PrairiePenguin · 1 pointr/cordcutters

I currently run a Gaming Rig/Media PC, so I might be able to help you out. If you're looking to stream throughout the house, Plex is the obvious choice, but I would recommend using Kodi on your main TV, if the PC is going to be hooked up to it.

I would also recommend this keyboard
it is pretty small and works really well. If the PC is hooked directly to the TV, it is easy enough to just use a web browser for Netflix/Hulu

For ripping blurays I would suggest using MakeMKV for the initial rip and handbrake for the compression. Also Filebot is a great naming tool that I use a lot.

I’ve had mine 4 years now. The only thing I don’t like about it is the battery is weird looking but I haven’t had to replace it yet so I don’t know how weird.

u/BillDaCatt · 1 pointr/microcomputing

I think the big question is how fast does the computer need to be and how much money are you willing to put into it?

As was already mentioned, you can get a Raspberry Pi for use as a media center. With the addition of a large USB stick or an external hard drive you can install Raspbian as the OS and XBMC as an application. This might require the addition of a small keyboard/mouse combo when in computer mode, but keyboards about the size of a game controller are available for less than $20. The biggest drawback here is that even the new Raspberry Pi model B+ only has 512 MB of RAM and can be a bit sluggish browsing the web. A Raspberry Pi with Wi-Fi, wireless keyboard, SD card, HDMI cable and power supply is still less than $100 though and is a bargain in my opinion. (I own four of them and currently run two 24/7. One functions as a media center and another is used as light duty Linux computer.)

If you need more power, consider an Intel NUC. Even the cheapest NUCs have Intel i3 processors in them and can run Windows or Linux. Most NUC PCs don't come with RAM or a hard drive though. This can easily push the price well past $400 dollars. Controlling one of these with VNC or XBMC Remote from your Android phone or tablet is simple once the remote software is installed.

You could also opt for something like a Roku, Amazon Fire TV, or an Apple TV as well.

If you don't find something that suits your needs or your budget right now, wait a few weeks. New, more powerful, devices come on the market often and the older stuff gets sold on clearance.

u/tiffanyjoXD · 1 pointr/keyboards

Yeah, I've considered buying one of these anyway. It's something that will be mostly used on my laptop, but this will give me a media center feel if I want to control my laptop from further away (like set it on a desk/table and open up some videos and such).

u/pxlnght · 1 pointr/buildapc

I have the old version of this, lasted me about 3 years before it started having issues. Good board overall, excellent range when it worked. (I used it pretty heavily, about 3-4 hours a day. It had a good life in that respect).

u/pleasejustdie · 1 pointr/ffxiv

A unified receiver can be used for up to 3 unified devices, so if you have a unified mouse and keyboard they can both share the one receiver.

Something like this is only 20 bucks at the moment: http://www.amazon.com/Logitech-Wireless-Combo-MK270-Keyboard/dp/B00BP5KOPA/ref=sr_1_1?s=pc&ie=UTF8&qid=1412969969&sr=1-1

That would replace the port being used for your mouse and give you a wireless mouse and keyboard.

I use the MK710 to play on my couch, I'd imagine the beanbag would be similar, rest the keyboard across your lap and use it as needed.

u/fikshunn · 1 pointr/buildapc
u/AutomaticNarwhal · 1 pointr/pcmasterrace

I guess you could use a trackball for those games if you are okay with the keyboard on your lap and the mouse on the couch.

EDIT: I forgot that you said you were 5-6 feet away, here is a wireless one. If you are uncomfertable with having your mouse on the couch here is a handheld one. Also this is a pretty cheap wireless keyboard.

u/azchocula · 1 pointr/PS4

This is what I use to play FFXIV on my PS4. Like you, that's the only thing I use it for, and I didn't want to invest a ton of money. This rig works perfectly, and it sips battery power. I've had the batteries in mine for months. It was completely easy to set up an use.

u/krnlcheese · 1 pointr/buildapcforme

I'm in a game of league right now, I'm not familiar with cuda, so I'll have to google what cards it's good with etc

Edit: Okay so pretty much every nvidia card has cuda. The 270x is a lot better than the 750ti for gaming. But the 750ti can still play older games on ultra at 1080p. But for future games don't expect much.

Pair it with a [Logitech MK270] (https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B00BP5KOPA/ref=mp_s_a_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1492780507&sr=8-3&pi=AC_SX236_SY340_FMwebp_QL65&keywords=wireless+keyboard+and+mouse&dpPl=1&dpID=41uf%2B7WmtSL&ref=plSrch) (or whatever your preference for wireless KB&M is) and the only cables you'll need to travel with are the power cable and a HDMI cable.

u/Syidas · 1 pointr/Overwatch

That's fair. Except if your already gaming on a console you can just use your TV as a monitor. Plus M&k combos are pretty cheap. Sure it's not the best M&K but you can use those while you save up.

u/OmgItsPhoc · 1 pointr/buildapc

If you do decide that you want to go with a used card the only place I would suggest throwing that money is into a better processor. The performance jump wouldn't be as big of a jump as throwing it into a graphics card though. That extra 100 into graphics is a huge jump.

All that being said, don't forget how important peripherals are.

You're spending so much for a pc, but the tools you use for input are relatively cheap. I'd say get a gaming mouse and maybe a mechanical keyboard. You probably wont get both of those for $100, but you can definitely do better. The difference between what you chose and even something like this is drastic.

u/killias · 1 pointr/buildapc

Thank you for your input.

The reasoning behind the keyboard is I tend to be a bit heavy handed and have messed up my fair share of keyboards. The logitech was the cheapest mechanical I found, and from what I understand they tend to be a bit more durable than normal keyboards.
Edit. found this cheaper keyboard, anyone used it before? http://www.amazon.com/CM-Storm-Devastator-Keyboard-Edition/dp/B00DKXXAAQ/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1409768860&sr=8-1&keywords=mechanical+keyboard

This should be able to max out League of Legends, I do not know about Dota because I don't play it. It should also be fine with any game you throw at it really. You can take the price down by getting a lower Watt PSU if you want, or you can go with 4GB's of ram instead of 8. I also went with a CM Elite 130 because it has USB 3 support and you said you would like your case to be smaller, also, you won't be able to really do much photo editing(assuming you will be using programs such as photoshop) I think the lowest end CPU you would want for that is the Athlon X4 760k. Also, you should try and confirm with someone if the Video Card will fit into this case. I hope this helps you into building a PC!

(This is if you can reuse your HDD and Ram)

I created a separate topic, but I'm posting here as well.

Hello!

I am looking to get a fairly okay mouse and keyboard set for my first PC build. My budget is around 40€ for the set, so a mechanical keyboard is probably out of the question. I've been looking at the Cooler Master Devastator combo, but some negative reviews about the mouse wheel getting squeaky within a month turned me away from that. I was also looking at the Thermaltake Commander combo, which seems decent, although the 'gamer' aesthetic is what I dislike a bit about that.

Maybe it would be reasonable to go for separate products and not a kb+m combo, but the selection is just so damn wide that I have trouble choosing anything, especially since you can't touch stuff and see how they feel in your hands over the internet.

So, can anybody recommend me a decent combo or two separate products for about 40€? Thanks in advance!

u/XeroInfinity · 1 pointr/buildapc

1.) I'm on a bit of a budget, and I saw the deal about the XFX R9 290X that comes with a lifetime warranty. I currently use a Radeon HD 7870 card, and while it's served me just fine for the past year, with the upcoming next-gen games, I was considering an upgrade.

But since I'm on a budget, would you guys recommend getting the price dropped R9 290X, or just stick to my 7870 for now? What I'm worried about is an offer like this disappearing, and/or my 7870 not being able to run the latest games at the highest settings with decent FPS.

2.) When it comes to gaming mice, I am not too anal about sensitivity or DPI a lot. The only game I play competitively is League of Legends, not CS:GO, so what do you guys think about this bundle? Is it worth it for someone on a budget like me? I've been currently operating with a measly non-gaming mice, which has served me okay, but it's time for an actual gaming mouse.

u/Aetherin · 1 pointr/pcmasterrace

https://www.amazon.com/Cooler-Master-Devastator-Gaming-Keyboard/dp/B00DKXXAAQ they're fairly bright. decent keyboard would recommend

u/OhGrayt · 1 pointr/pcmasterrace

I did not think of that, valid point but you can get some cheap bundles. Even so it would cost you extra.

u/UnSubbedGuy · 1 pointr/buildapc

Had my Razer Abyssus which I admit is one of their cheapest (think I spent... $40 on it? can't remember) and it lasted roughly 3 years.

The scroll wheel ended up breaking completely one day while using it but everything else still works. Just can't use a mouse without a scroll wheel.

I went ahead and bought this to use until I get around to buying both a mouse and keyboard that are high quality.

u/marmite182 · 1 pointr/buildapc

Keyboard & Mouse $30

Mouse comes with mouse 4&5 and changeable DPI. The keyboard looks solid and has good reviews too.

Case has solid reviews, a USB 3.0 port, has 7 expansion slots (2 SSD and 5 HDD)(so you can upgrade later), 3 fans (1 top, 1 rear, 1 front) and looks sik as.

It's also $50

This comes to a total of $80

For cheap gaming Keyboard/Mice while you save up: Look at the CmStorm Devastator

The LAN Arcade a mile from my place uses these. They're comfy. Especially for the cost.

As for monitors, if you have a 1080p TV lying around, you can use the HDMI output for that.

u/MightyMouse420 · 1 pointr/pcmasterracents
u/tricket10 · 1 pointr/pcmasterrace

What do you mean by don't burn it out rendering anything? Well the End All build would last you a bit longer since it has overclocking capabilities for the CPU. Though you'd have to save up for a monitor (I'd suggest a Free Sync monitor) plus the Keyboard/Mouse Combo.

u/iznotros · 1 pointr/buildapc

Check out the Cooler Master. I know it's a bundle, but I'm fairly certain you can get it without the mouse.

u/Bryanormike · 1 pointr/buildapc

TL;DR won't make you game better (debatable) but feels smoother and will make you never want to use regular keyboards.

The feel from a mechanical and non is extremely different. Not even just for gaming but for typing and everyday use. Trust me, once you've used a mechanical keyboard regular keyboards will seem dumb and you'll find them hard to use or you'll just think they are dumb.

This was the first keyboard that was mechanical like that I bought (It's not 100% mechanical but it has the feel) and the difference from a non gamer experience wasn't much different. At first I couldn't see the hype and felt dumb for spending the money to buy it. Not even a month later I used a regular keyboard at work and it felt horrible. It didn't feel as responsive as the CM Storm even though it was but it just felt wrong.

u/humanmanguy · 1 pointr/AndroidQuestions

The Amazon Fire TV is great and very high quality for only $99. If you have amazon prime, you can use it to watch some "free" shows/movies, or simply download the Netflix or Hulu app.

It doesn't have a full qwerty keyboard, but is compatible with any keyboard, including bluetooth ones such as this or this one which is only $15.

The best part is that it is supported by Amazon, which has some of the best customer support around. I don't know what the prices are in the UK, but it seems like it'd fall within your budget.

u/Toahpt · 1 pointr/raspberry_pi

I'd like to figure out how to use a Raspberry Pi to run my local fire company's program called IAmResponding. Basically I can just use a website to display everything that I need, so that's my base. I'd like to make it so that every time the device is turned on, it'll go to the IAR website and log in on startup. On top of that, I'd like to make sure I can do all of that before I buy all the necessary things in order to do it.

So what I need is a Raspberry Pi, programming, some sort of input device (I'm thinking of buying one of those mini keyboards with the touchpad thing next to it) and a way to connect to wi-fi.

Right now we're using a smart TV, but it's total crap. It'll only run IAR for about 12 hours before it stops responding.

I've got the previous version of the Logitech K400 that fits neatly in my bag and is a reasonable keyboard for setting things up. I've tried the mini-keyboards like the Rii but they're a bit of a pain to work with if you're trying to do a lot of configuration work. Especially if you're a vi user.

u/Brinohm · 1 pointr/PleX

It's a really good question actually. With a RPi build, I have a little wireless keyboard that I use when nothing else is working (or ready). It comes in super handy when you first start setting an RPi up or if the device has a bit of a jam. For normal operations, I run headless like you saw, and just VNC into the machine for updates and changes (or SSH). Below is a link to the one I have for ref

https://www.amazon.com/Rii-Wireless-Keyboard-Lightweight-Controller/dp/B00I5SW8MC/

u/tgoodmarsh · 1 pointr/pcgaming

I just picked up this little guy about a week ago. It definitely beats having a full-size wireless keyboard on my coffee table; I chose it specifically because I wanted something the size of a TV remote. It's worthless for gaming though, best for HTPC use.

u/avoutthere · 1 pointr/raspberry_pi

I've been very happy with this little guy. The USB dongle works perfectly with my Pi.

u/rotfsmlsh · 1 pointr/Steam

There were a few programs that forced me to go to my host computer to get past the launcher. I just hooked up my mini wireless keyboard directly to the link to avoid the issue. Pretty sure you could just use a wireless mouse if you have one lying around. Before I had the link, I hooked up my laptop to the TV and used the wireless keyboard to navigate stuff. So far it looks like the steam link can replace my laptop entirely for streaming non-steam stuff.

As far as games hiding the launcher, I've only run into an issue when trying to launch Mass Effect. I've read launching that in windowed mode can fix the issue.

u/Corm · 1 pointr/keyboards

I don't think there's anything wireless like that, but that sounds like it would be awful to use unless you've got god-tier oldschool nokia skills.

Why not something hand-sized like this? (disclaimer, I have a small Rii keyboard like that and the wireless connectivity is pretty shitty, so you might want to shop around)

You can control this setup with any standard IR remote. The hardware has a IR sensor and is pre-programed with xbox media center IR commands. So if you get a XBox Media Center ready remote or Harmony you're good too go.

So you can get a cheap $10 remote or $$ remote or even use a bluetooth keyboard...

As far as "Wife Proofing" what I did was this.. Buy this remote..

SHE LOVES IT... jokes about how I had to get her a special remote with her friends..

It's a learning remote so you have to have a harmony to program this kiddie remote.. but I made the green button TV Power, Read Vol Down, Orange Vol Up and rocker standard and the "M" the back button. No insults to all the wifes out there, I'm sure many can use those $$ remotes but mine loves this little 5 button remote with the plex setup. The only thing she don't like is she can't fwd cuz I have the buttons programed as next chapter. But she can turn on the TV and so can the little ones. While I use this remote..

Then when I had to program the wifes / kiddie remote cuz she complained about the keyboard because the kids would leave it turned on and it woudl be always be dead when she went to grab it so I used that as an excuse to buy the remote I really wanted which was the big harmony IR remote here..

I have this keyboard. Use it in the living room. It's not terrible, but I find that it tends to click on stuff I didn't mean to click on, no matter how delicate I am with the touch pad. Maybe it's just mine but it's super annoying. For another room I decided to take a chance on [this] (http://www.amazon.com/Rii-Wirelesss-Touchpad-Keyboard-Android/dp/B00JO80LUI/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1426788882&sr=8-1&keywords=rii+keyboard) and was surprised to find that it worked much, much better. I'm not saying don't go with the Logitech, but if you want to try something cheaper... Plus you can charge it via USB (no more batteries) and it has two options for mouse buttons (right and left) which I find are easier to use.

The mouse is a bit shit, otherwise I'm surprised you could piece together a system like this for under 400$.

This is said to be pretty good value, mind its a KB+Mouse combination so you can drop your current keyboard from the list and just get this bundle. Mouse has more flexibility in DPI depending on what kind of playstyle do you want and the sensor is probably better as well.

eBay always worked for me. Exchange sucks but breaking it down you basically pay

$100+any tax USD for the box, they MSRP $99USD.

$15USD for seller to pickup, list/email/manage, package

$13-15USD eBay and paypal fees (13% now IIRC)

$20 USD shipping

$25USD import.

Thats about $173USD which works out to about $231CAD. Honestly the nVidia shield was $212 CAD last I checked in Feb and spec-wise is much better than FTV4K, plus its available in Canada and works here easily.

If you don't need 4K support and can deal with somewhat buggy or 'hacky' software (not ideal but functional) the ones out of china on amazon are at least functional android boxes with about the same spec and power as the original FireTV. Just get a Rii i8+ backlit keyboard/mouse combo for $25. The remotes they ship with great to throw at stuff, not much else.

Hope this helps. The other way is to find someone travelling who will bring one home or up when they come at MSRP. I looked into reshipping services and they weren't worth it.

Does it have to be motion control? My experience with them has been that they're awful to use. I find a touchpad works a lot better. Maybe you've a different use case than I do.

I use something like this. They can control volume just fine, but you'll need to make sure HDMI-CEC passthrough is enabled on the Shield, and whatever equipment you have for audio accepts CEC. I, personally, do not like CEC because it can often get confused and start turning off the wrong thing, stuff like that. I have older components though, so maybe it works better on newer stuff?

I used one of those controllers for Keyboard/Mouse struff. But I use a Harmony remote for most stuff. I don't need the keyboard/mouse all that frequently so it just sits on the end-table. The Harmony remote controls a Flirc that's plugged into the Shield. Between the Harmony Remote and the Flirc I can use the remote to do just about anything. It's really amazing. You can even macro multi-key commands, assign them to a specific key, you name it.

Harmony has some newer remote systems as well. They look like they could do just about anything, you might want to look into that.

Lastly, Google's Android TV Remote App has a touchpad to.

Again, if you really need motion control, I'm not sure. I've not had luck with those.

u/Octoplow · 1 pointr/HoloLens

I think /u/NomBok has the best advice if you truly need clickers and the accel/gyro inside. I don't know of a 3rd party device that small.

If you're flexible, these Bluetooth keyboard/touchpads work great and fit inside the HoloLens case, replacing the foam circle. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B015J6TEN8/

If you need smaller and just clicking, there are Bluetooth "presentation remotes" and "smart rings" that emulate mouse clicks, and maybe some mouse movements. We haven't looked at them.

u/KnottShore · 1 pointr/kindle

u/dave1253 · 1 pointr/AndroidTV

Bought one of these and using the touch pad, you can access all the functions of Amazon Prime. I've found that double tap seems to work like a single click.

u/ericklemyelmo · 1 pointr/Vue

Alright so the one I got is good but bad at the same time. I'm trading it out for a universal remote, mainly for the function of having a guide button. the one I got is the ipazzport controller like one:

https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B015J6TEN8

It was easy to set up and use but the problems it had were double clicking sometimes, poor one handed use, and no guide button, which is a deal breaker for me. I've found out that the mi box has an ir receiver on it, so I'm going to be getting this:

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00M4I1BAY

I personally wish it was a bit less old school controller look wise and had a QWERTY keyboard, but what can you do. I was torn between that one and this one, which I will get if the guide button doesn't end up working out:

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01CL3ZXGO

The other ones I read up on as basically being the dankest nugs are the harmony remotes, but I really can't justify that much money for a remote. Stuff like this has me wishing I would have just gotten a ps4 and gotten the PlayStation remote with it. I will make a new reply to you guys when I get and try out the new remote. Hope some of this has helped!

I finally got around to testing this out. Using your example didn't work for me. I guess nVidia Shield Gamepad isn't seen as a remote and neither is the Fire TV Remote (gen 2).

Side Note: What a pain in the ass it is to re-upload custom keymaps, reload the keymap, and open up a video for testing. Fortunately I'm editing in Sublime Text, using Teamviewer to do the file transfer, added a shortcut to "reloadkeymaps" action on my menu, and used a TV recording.

Before I realized only certain keyname tags are only applicable to the particular sections, I tried using <gamepad> & <remote> like in this example:

<gamepad>
<back>Pause</back>
<browser_back>Pause</browser_back>
<backspace>Pause</backspace>
</gamepad>

None of those worked with my two devices. What eventually worked:

<keyboard>
<backspace>Pause</backspace>
</keyboard>

But only for my Fire TV Remote. So I had to do this for the Shield gamepad:

<joystick>
<button id="2">Pause</button>
</joystick>

However, what I really want is for it to PAUSE and GO BACK when I hit the back button or B button. Not just pause. And I don't see a way to combine two actions to one button press. I might play with creating my own scripts as mentioned here: https://forum.kodi.tv/showthread.php?tid=125859

So I just went with setting the backspace key to PreviousMenu and at that point I can hit play/pause on the Fire TV Remote. But for the nVidia Shield Gamepad, I had to also map the "Start" button. So I settled for this:

<joystick>
<button id="2">PreviousMenu</button>
<button id="8">Pause</button>
</joystick>

This turned out to be handy for reference: https://github.com/koying/SPMC/blob/spmc-jarvis/system/keymaps/joystick.xml.sample

Our differences could be something to do with me using the fork, SPMC 16.7.1.

There's probably a lot more I could do (that I can't think of at the moment) now that I've familiarized myself with keymaps so I'm glad I took the time to read through the wiki a bit and play around with them. Maybe someone else will benefit from what I've learned.

I'm pretty annoyed there isn't a decent remote out there with a keyboard on the back, voice input, IR learning, and air mouse (or better yet a trackball) that doesn't annihilate batteries. And maybe is WiFi or bluetooth instead of RF. I used this one for awhile but it tears through batteries at a ridiculous rate - https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B015O5UM6M/
I'd also get rid of the channel # keys on the front and add more IR learning keys. I opted for the back-lit version over the voice input version and ended up wishing I had the voice input more often than not. Not sure why these features are mutually exclusive.

In the end, I prefer the Fire TV gen 2 remote for it's compactness, voice input, and key layout. And my trackball keyboard if I really need to type a lot of things out.

Which devices are you using to control Kodi?

Corsair/steelseries/etc. all make similar mice that are basically the same thing. I think of it as a kind of minimalist design. great for casual gaming. I am using the G502 just because i love heavy mice and I can save button shortcuts to the mouse itself so it works with my pc and mac...and rgb bro

Ahh ok so like a $30 Keyboard i can replace? I was looking at this one:
[here](http://www.TOMOKO.com/ Mechanical Gaming Keyboard, Water Resistant Gaming Keyboard with Blue Switch for Gamers, Anti-ghosting Keyboard (Black, 104 Key) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01IHVN4GA/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_kG26xbN0YZH1H). Thats just an idea but i will keep looking.

Also i know its the keyboard because the temporary keyboard i was using did work properly for the down arrow.

Can it be a driver? Like i said its my first mech so im not sure if they need drivers from the manufacturer.

I have the TKL version of this at work. dead simple workhorse with outemu blues. Clicky. Does it's job, standard bottom row layout, so good candidate for keycap sets, too, unlike some popular boards you might see on hardwareswap. I like it a lot - it's cheap and very simple. If that doesn't meet your needs, no problem - just trying to be helpful! Good luck with your buy. :)

I believe it is this one here.

I'm going from having this: [Garbage] which has gateron blues. I really don't like they switches because they have a lot of variance. But, I don't know how $$$ much is appropriate to replace it with. I replaced the keycaps because of how garbage the original ones felt. I prefer a harder switch to press, as I came from a high end rubber dome that needed a surprising amount of force (about double what these seems to have). But, I love the feeling of the mechanical keys. I am thinking about joining the massdrop for the Pok3r RGB because it seems like a robust keyboard that doesn't have considerable problems. But, I really don't know. Any suggestions?

My only note is I'm thinking about cherry mx blacks, and I would love to keep it sub 150USD.

No problem, here's my profile: https://steamcommunity.com/profiles/76561198132578610/

On the subject of keyboards, I'd recommend a decent membrane keyboard for fighting games, so that you get that smooth motion when mastering inputs. Mechanical's great too, but can be costly, and won't feel as smooth when performing motions such as quarter-circles.

The Logitech G213 (https://www.amazon.com/dp/B071WR2JYQ/ref=dp_cr_wdg_tit_rfb) is a good example of a great membrane keyboard that will last, which is $39.99 Certified Refurbished on Amazon US (probably not your region, but it's the most common here, so it might be of use). The Cooler Master Masterkeys Lite L Combo (https://www.amazon.com/Cooler-Master-MasterKeys-Mem-chanical-SGB-3040-KKMF1-US/dp/B01KBXKMM6) is great as well from my research, but it's slightly more expensive due to an obligatory, average mouse that's thrown in with it.

All this said, you will undoubtedly have to do your own research on specific keyboards in your area, as I could not find any results for the keyboards you mentioned. You should be able to find something by a well-known manufacturer for around the 40 US Dollar mark, so keep searching. You'll most likely be able to manage well with your Microsoft keyboard for now, though for reliability, you may need something better. For reference, I did pretty okay on my 20 year old DELL keyboard I used to type these messages, so you'll probably be fine!

EDIT: Added links to examples of the keyboards mentioned.

I'm not sure which one of these to choose as they all seem to fit my requirements:

  • Budget: max of $100
  • Full Keyboard
  • It's for gaming, so something close to Cherry MX Brown?
  • basic backlight is fine

It'd be my first mechanical keyboard and I want to know between these keyboards which one would be the better one considering the brand and the quality

    ^^^Links ^^^are ^^^of ^^^Amazon ^^^Mexico ^^^since ^^^I ^^^live ^^^there

  • G. Skill RIP JAWS KM570 Seems to be alright, however I'm not sure of the brand being quality

  • Hyper X hx-kb1bl1-na/A1 I have one of their headsets and they seem to be quality, but they also seem overly expensive; other than that it fits my requirements

  • Logitech G413 Prodigy Seems to be alright as well, but it's using it's own switches apparently and isk how good they are

  • Cooler Master MasterKeys Lite L Combo Quality company I believe, it includes a mouse which I could use since my current one is off-brand and it's half my budget. But the switches are "mem-chanical"? so it's not fully mechanical? what are your thoughts on this?, would it good to save up a bit more for a better one and get this in the meantime to get used to mechanical?

I'd love to hear your opinions. Thanks for reading

Well, i think i saw some masterkeys with white led (non mechanical) that went for about $30, but it was on brazil so im not sure if you can find it on your usual sellers there. It was the masterkeys lite if im not mistaken. You can always buy the rgb version of a keyboard aswell and tune the lights to make it white. And for about $70 you can get the compact version of the corsair k66, it is a mechanical keyboard with cherry mx red but it has no backlight at all. I know its a little off budget, but its all i can find right now on mobile. I saw some cougar keyboard on amazon for $70 and it had white leda, but i dont know about the brand tho.

Unfortunately I seem to have lost some of my WIP notes for it :/ If you can hang on a few days I can recreate my notes. (EDIT): Notes: https://hastebin.com/raw/itumoriwiw

I can tell you that there are a bunch of buttons that 'almost work' out of the box if you're using Kodi, but not quite. The setup is usable, but not everything is mapped wonderfully. The Volume buttons map to the standard system volume control (not Kodi's). The Show Desktop button works. The air mouse features work. But A lot of the top buttons are windows specific, for example 'explorer' sends a Win+E.

I also use a NUC :)

--- EDIT

Quick notes on key remapping: you can use built in kernel features to remap single button presses, like here where I disabled the remote's power buttons:

One thing you could do, is set up a sub-account, specifically for your kids, with all the parental options set up the way you want them. I'm assuming you haven't done this yet. If you have, then i shall move on to my next idea..

u/dbx99 · 0 pointsr/xbmc

I tried a couple of alternatives - like this Rii tiny keyboard but it sucked.

The hand held remote that came with my mini PC was IR and required line of sight.

The best remote to get around that is one of the remote apps you can download on your smart phone. Those work off your wifi and don't require line of sight.

Overall, the 400 is still my preferred choice - it's very responsive and despite its larger size compared to a hand held, having a good keyboard for searches is great. The mousepad is very responsive.

u/5YOChemist · 0 pointsr/buildapcsales

I have one of these. As far as I can tell it is the same product with different branding. I love it, we use it with an android box for all of our TV watching. It has about a 50 ft range with LoS. In our house I have tested it through 2 walls, but signal drops off quickly after that. I charge the battery once every 3-4 weeks. The only things I have against mine are that the touch pad is not very sensitive and it defaults to the lowest sensitivity every time you turn it off. Also about once a week it will lose communication and I have to unplug the dongle and plug it back in.

The febite mx3 pro can do IR on the power button as well as the bottom 4 colored buttons. I'm using it with a raspberry pi3 running libreelec and have the power button turn on/off the tv since the pi is the only thing plugged in and it stays on all the time. I programmed the bottom 4 for input switching, mute and vol +/- but I just have the tv turned up loud enough that I'm using the volume control within kodi via the vol +/- on the remote and haven't needed the bottom 4. Macros are only used in SMITE for VET (Taunt) or VEL (Laugh), any macro that is used for abilities is a bannable offense, hence why no one does it.

There aren't many disadvantages, actually. The only key disadvantage is being unable to turn quickly with a controller, but even then Hi-Rez is going to add KB/M support for players on Xbox who wish to eliminate this oh so horrible disadvantage.

You're taking something great and crushing it, turning it into something negative. Crossplatform is a great thing, and it provides many opportunities for Hi-Rez and also helps grow the playerbase as a whole.

&gt;So? And when you build a pc you'll have to buy a decent keyboard + mouse which will also cost atleast $55-60 (If you get a relatively cheap one)

http://www.amazon.com/Logitech-Wireless-Combo-MK270-Keyboard/dp/B00BP5KOPA/ref=lp_1194464_1_1?s=pc&amp;amp;ie=UTF8&amp;amp;qid=1417762955&amp;amp;sr=1-1

&gt;and if you'd want those games they would cost the same on pc too. Yeah you can buy older games on the pc but that doesnt make the games "cheaper", because they cause the same on both.

Remember that $10-15 charge from Microsoft and sony? It doesnt exist on PC. Borderlands TPS is $40 right now, Middle Earth: Shadow of Mordor went on sale for $30 last week, and some other deals. They do not cost the same, and there are far more and better games to play on PC anyway.

&gt;Oh, you mean the red ring of death, the rare issue that only happened to 1 version of a console in history?

"Worldwide 78.2 million units [6] as of September 30, 2013[7" http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Xbox_360_sales

&gt;Please explain to me what would happen to a hard-working pc without the proper cooling.

The processor would probably be the thing heating up excessively (which they almost never do, especially if you arent overclocking), and it would reduce it's voltage to get the temperatures back down, or force shutdown if it couldnt regulate it's temperature.

&gt;Hint: it would fail too, and you'd have to throw it out if the motherboard or cpu get fried.

It's kind of hard to fry things. Ive seen people try to destroy their computers via overclocking and the PC will read out over 300 degrees before it shuts down, and it will still boot up about 5mins later. It would not fail because there are lots of failsafes on much more expensive processors. What really kills the Xbox is that it uses an APU, where the GPU and CPU are on the same chip. This concentrates all of the heat into one very small spot and if there's ever an issue it becomes a huge issue.

&gt;PS: The correct reason to play on a console: Opinion and personal preference.

Please explain what the opinion is and why someone might prefer it.

You didn't list your budget, but since you said you have a Lycosa, I'm going to assume you know what it feels like to throw money at a keyboard.

Gaming keyboards (well, keyboards in general) can range from very budget friendly, to ridiculous.

Sticking with Razer and going for a more "solid" feel, the new Blackwidow line with the Razer custom switches may be what you're looking for. The versions with the Razer orange switches may be quiet enough that your roommate won't mind. The Blackwidow Ultimate Stealth has all the lights and other bells and whistles. The Logitech G710+ should feel and sound about the same.

If you want to dump the mechanical switch types all together, the Logitech G19 and the Corsair K50 are all-around good boards, but they'll have the same feel and heft of your Lycosa.

Your most solid built keyboards are going to be the mechanical ones - if even for the simple fact that the 104+ individual Cherry switches will weigh more than a single sheet of rubber membrane. If you get the chance, I'd suggest trying out a brown, red, or black Cherry switch. They don't have the telltale click, but if you're a key-basher, they can still be loud. If you find you hate'em or they're too loud, there's not too many membrane keyboards that have the "tanky" feeling of a mech. You might already be at the top of the heap with the Lycosa.
